- 1:02Speaker 1: thing since sneakers with suits. If you watch the NFL
- 1:07Speaker 1: Network or football shows on ESPN, you'll notice that most
- 1:11Speaker 1: of the analysts wear sneakers with their suits, not too
- 1:14Speaker 1: long ago that would have been considered a total fashion
- 1:17Speaker 1: faux paw, but not anymore. Now it looks cool and youthful.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Take it from somebody who is neither. Now, let's get
- 1:27Speaker 1: to Sunday's game. The first nineteen minutes and forty eight seconds,
- 1:31Speaker 1: we're a complete and total disaster. They are going for
- 1:35Speaker 1: it on fourth and goal from the four. It's not
- 1:37Speaker 1: at the one, it's at the four. Receiver goes in
- 1:40Speaker 1: jet motion. Herbert catches the ball. He's back to throw,
- 1:42Speaker 1: he's looking left, looks over the middle, throws over the middle,
- 1:45Speaker 1: and it is caught in the end zone by Keenan
- 1:47Speaker 1: Allen pretty well covered on the play and Herbert just
- 1:50Speaker 1: delivered a perfect strike for the touchdown. Burrow with a
- 1:54Speaker 1: play action fake in a deep drive, he gets hit
- 1:56Speaker 1: from behind. The ball is knocked out of Joe Burrow's
- 1:59Speaker 1: hands and the Chargers begin celebrating and they recover it.
- 2:03Speaker 1: At the Cincinnati thirty girl will look to pass from
- 2:06Speaker 1: the pocket. He fires kick downfield for Chase on the run.
- 2:10Speaker 1: The ball comes out and goes right to the Chargers
- 2:13Speaker 1: for an interception. Michael Davis winds up with the ball
- 2:16Speaker 1: as Chase dropped a perfectly thrown deep ball by Joe
- 2:20Speaker 1: Burrow as he was trying to streak toward the end zone.
- 2:24Speaker 1: He just dropped it right to the guy trailing him.
- 2:27Speaker 1: Second down and fourth at the Cincinnati eight. Herbert in
- 2:30Speaker 1: the gun, the receiver goes in jet motion. Herbert throws
- 2:33Speaker 1: into the end zone and the Bengals didn't even cover
- 2:36Speaker 1: Keenan Allen. Herbert catches a shotgun snap, fakes a handoff,
- 2:40Speaker 1: rolls out to the right, wants to throw it deep.
- 2:42Speaker 1: He will firing it all the way toward the end zone.
- 2:45Speaker 1: It is a fight for the ball. A penalty flag
- 2:48Speaker 1: down hit his cuts for the touchdown. Jalen Guiton hauling
- 2:52Speaker 1: in the forty five yards strike from Justin Herbert. He
- 2:56Speaker 1: beat Jesse Bates in the wrestling match for the football
- 2:59Speaker 1: and her Bert already has three completions of forty plus
- 3:03Speaker 1: in the first half. Herbert in the gun, Heckler to
- 3:06Speaker 1: his right. They're going to flip it back to Alan,
- 3:09Speaker 1: who throws to Herbert and he makes the catch on
- 3:12Speaker 1: the Philly special for the two point conversion. Royal boy,
- 3:16Speaker 1: tell you what Chargers look like. They're dominant football team
- 3:22Speaker 1: today in every phase. Offense, defense, special teams is clicking
- 3:27Speaker 1: in some ation. The Bengals turned it over on their
- 3:29Speaker 1: first two drives, and the Chargers scored on four of
- 3:31Speaker 1: their first five possessions. It was twenty four nothing Los
- 3:35Speaker 1: Angeles with more than ten minutes left in the half.
- 3:38Speaker 1: The biggest come from behind victories in Bengals history are
- 3:41Speaker 1: from twenty one point deficits in nineteen eighty one and
- 3:45Speaker 1: nineteen ninety five. They have never rallied from twenty four down,
- 3:49Speaker 1: but they almost did it on Sunday block. Running seven
- 3:53Speaker 1: forty six left in the second quarter, Burrow drops back
- 3:56Speaker 1: to throw flings it deep down field from heads into
- 3:59Speaker 1: the end. He got it touchdown. Bengals Burrow two Higgins
- 4:06Speaker 1: as t used his height and his wing spanned to
- 4:10Speaker 1: Houlda in. The Bengals lined up to go for two
- 4:13Speaker 1: before calling a time out. After the time out, they
- 4:17Speaker 1: got called for a delay of game penalty. In following
- 4:20Speaker 1: the penalty, Evan McPherson missed the extra long extra point.
- 4:25Speaker 1: Here's Zach Taylor, horrific by me, horrific horrific um. You know,
- 4:30Speaker 1: we were going for two, and so we were a
- 4:31Speaker 1: little slow making sure we had the right personnel grouping
- 4:34Speaker 1: on the field where I made that mistake. So then
- 4:37Speaker 1: we called time out, put the ball in hash um
- 4:40Speaker 1: waiting to see what personnel they were in, and then
- 4:42Speaker 1: and then I called the play backwards, so I'm trying
- 4:44Speaker 1: to correct it at the last second, and we end
- 4:45Speaker 1: up taking the delay game. So it just horrific management
- 4:48Speaker 1: of a situation by me twice coming out of a
- 4:50Speaker 1: time out and then having to ticket to lay the game,
- 4:52Speaker 1: and then and then we missed the extra point on
- 4:53Speaker 1: top of that. So um, that was that was all
- 4:56Speaker 1: on me. I don't know about you, but I appreciate
- 4:59Speaker 1: a coach explain his own mistake in that much detail.
- 5:02Speaker 1: And it wasn't a backbreaker. Jermaine Pratt forced to fumble
- 5:06Speaker 1: on the Charger's next drive and it was returned to
- 5:08Speaker 1: the LA nineteen yard line by Jesse Bates. Three plays later,
- 5:12Speaker 1: the deficit was down to eleven. Second goal from the
- 5:15Speaker 1: sixth Burrow will look to pass looking running ringing up
- 5:19Speaker 1: the middle of the field, and he will go into
- 5:21Speaker 1: the end zone, standing up touchdown Bengals as Burrow scores
- 5:27Speaker 1: his second rushing touchdown in as many weeks. That made
- 5:31Speaker 1: a twenty four to thirteen, but following the touchdown, Burrow
- 5:34Speaker 1: came to the sideline shaking his right hand. As it
- 5:37Speaker 1: turned out, he had dislocated the little finger on his
- 5:40Speaker 1: throwing hand way back on the Bengals fifth play of
- 5:44Speaker 1: the game when he was hit from behind by o'
- 5:46Speaker 1: chenna Nuosu. I don't I don't think I really noticed
- 5:50Speaker 1: what happened at the beginning, and I think my drone
- 5:52Speaker 1: was pumping a little too much. And then as it
- 5:54Speaker 1: went along, you know, I got progressively worse a little bit,
- 5:58Speaker 1: but I was able to play through it, and that's
- 6:01Speaker 1: a testament to his toughness. The medical staff tried to
- 6:04Speaker 1: tape it, Burrow tried to wear a glove, and ultimately
- 6:08Speaker 1: he just played through the pain. And it was the
- 6:11Speaker 1: decision of make it feel better or continue to be
- 6:14Speaker 1: able to somewhat throw the ball. So I decided to
- 6:17Speaker 1: be able to throw the ball. As for next week,
- 6:20Speaker 1: that's just something I'm gonna have to deal with. I'm
- 6:21Speaker 1: not going to miss any games because of it. That's
- 6:24Speaker 1: not something that's going to happen. I mean, unless it
- 6:27Speaker 1: somehow gets worse, which I don't can't imagine it's going
- 6:30Speaker 1: to get worse than I'll be playing next week. I
- 6:33Speaker 1: feel like he had zip on the wall. I felt
- 6:35Speaker 1: like I was able to compensate for what was lost. UM,
- 6:42Speaker 1: probably not as much a zip as I normally have,
- 6:44Speaker 1: but I don't I think I was still able to
- 6:46Speaker 1: throw the ball effectively. After trailing twenty four thirteen at
- 6:49Speaker 1: a half, the Bengals kicked a field goal on their
- 6:51Speaker 1: opening drive of the third quarter to pull within eight.
- 6:54Speaker 1: Then Mike Hilton forced a fumble that was recovered by
- 6:58Speaker 1: Trey Hendrickson at the Chargers thirty two. Cincinnati was a
- 7:02Speaker 1: touchdown and a two point conversion away from tying the game.
- 7:06Speaker 1: Burrow catches the shotgun, snap hands to Mixing chip fighting
- 7:09Speaker 1: through a hole, and runs it into the end zone, touchdown,
- 7:15Speaker 1: Bengals Mixing doing an end zone dance with his teammates,
- 7:19Speaker 1: and the Bengals are a two point conversion away from
- 7:23Speaker 1: erasing a twenty four point deficit. And I'll tell you
- 7:26Speaker 1: what set about the inside. The Bengals offensive line starting
- 7:30Speaker 1: to effect him inside, keep pounding pounding away at the inside,
- 7:33Speaker 1: and eventually Bill Crack. The ball was placed at the
- 7:37Speaker 1: two yard line and the Chargers had twelve men on
- 7:40Speaker 1: the field, moving the ball to the one for the
- 7:43Speaker 1: two point conversion. Try Burrow hands it to Mixing, charges forward, fighting,
- 7:48Speaker 1: struggling and stopped. He did not get in, so it
- 7:52Speaker 1: was twenty four twenty two. Midway through the third quarter.
- 7:56Speaker 1: The Bengals had blown a chance to tie it, but
- 7:58Speaker 1: would get a couple of chances to take the lead.
- 8:01Speaker 1: The defense forced the Chargers to punt on back to
- 8:04Speaker 1: back possessions, and with fourteen minutes left in the game,
- 8:07Speaker 1: it looked like the Bengals were going to take the lead.
- 8:10Speaker 1: The Bengals are within the field goal range of Evan McPherson,
- 8:15Speaker 1: trailing by two points early fourth quarter for hands it
- 8:19Speaker 1: to mix and again loses the football scoped up by
- 8:21Speaker 1: the Chargers. This is going to be a touchdown run
- 8:24Speaker 1: back by to Vaughan Campbell. No man. The Bengals were
- 8:29Speaker 1: on the verge of taking the lead. Mix and fumbles
- 8:31Speaker 1: the ball. Campbell scooped it up. Nobody had a prayer
- 8:35Speaker 1: I'll bringing him down. Former Bengal Christian Covington got credit
- 8:39Speaker 1: for forcing the fumble, but on the replay it looked
- 8:42Speaker 1: like Mixon just lost the ball as he tried to
- 8:44Speaker 1: cut to his right that don't happen usually, So I
- 8:48Speaker 1: mean I gotta go back to you know, get back
- 8:51Speaker 1: in the lab with you know, taking care of the
- 8:53Speaker 1: football and learning how to shift and do little certain things,
- 8:57Speaker 1: because those little things like that as we that you beat,
- 9:00Speaker 1: it was turnover, that kind of you know, shift at
- 9:05Speaker 1: the momentum, and uh, you know, I'd take full responsibility
- 9:08Speaker 1: for that because at the end of the day, no
- 9:10Speaker 1: matter what the play was, that shouldn't happen. And you know,
- 9:14Speaker 1: I'd take full responsibility. And the extra point gave the
- 9:17Speaker 1: Chargers a nine point lead, and burrow In the Bengals
- 9:21Speaker 1: never got closer. I was proud of our fight, and
- 9:24Speaker 1: we had the ball in plus territory with a chance
- 9:26Speaker 1: to take the lead, and we had another turnover, but
- 9:30Speaker 1: and we fought back. It's you know, there's not any
- 9:33Speaker 1: moral victories, but we put ourselves in a position to
- 9:35Speaker 1: win that game. Joe threw an end zone interception in
- 9:38Speaker 1: the fourth quarter and the Chargers added ten points to
- 9:41Speaker 1: make the final score forty one to twenty two. Zach
- 9:45Speaker 1: Taylor and Joe Mixon wrap up a disappointing day in
- 9:48Speaker 1: the jungle sloppy game all the way around by us,
- 9:51Speaker 1: you know, to get in the hold of the way
- 9:52Speaker 1: that we did with the turnovers, the explosive plays, the
- 9:55Speaker 1: opening kickoff, going back to the plus forty eight, things
- 9:59Speaker 1: that I did that that certainly were unacceptable. So again,
- 10:02Speaker 1: just we didn't deserve to win today. They did. It's
- 10:05Speaker 1: a good football team. When you put that performance out there,
- 10:07Speaker 1: that's what's gonna happen. A lot of guys basically got
- 10:10Speaker 1: banged up today, and you know, I'm just proud of
- 10:13Speaker 1: the way to everybody for all four quarters, and you know,
- 10:16Speaker 1: just shows you that it adn't go fighting the teams.
- 10:18Speaker 1: You gotta keep on going. I mean, the best thing
- 10:20Speaker 1: that we got, or the best thing that we have
- 10:22Speaker 1: going right now is that we get to live to
- 10:25Speaker 1: fight another day. So we just gotta come ready next week.
- 10:28Speaker 1: We gotta prepare for San Francisco, and I just gotta
- 10:31Speaker 1: come back and get ready for another door. Despite the loss,
- 10:34Speaker 1: the Bengals are still the final playoff team in the
- 10:37Speaker 1: AFC with five games to go, and since the Steelers
- 10:40Speaker 1: beat the Ravens on Sunday, Cincinnati is a game behind
- 10:43Speaker 1: Baltimore for first place in the AFC North, a half
- 10:47Speaker 1: game ahead of the Steelers and a game ahead of
- 10:50Speaker 1: the Cleveland Browns. As Joe Mixon mentioned, a home game
- 10:54Speaker 1: against the forty nine Ers is next. San Francisco is
- 10:57Speaker 1: six and six and saw a three game winning streak
- 11:00Speaker 1: come to an end on Sunday with a seven point
- 11:02Speaker 1: loss in Seattle. Now time for postgame analysis with my
- 11:06Speaker 1: broadcast partner Dave Lapham. Wild game lap the Chargers beating
- 11:11Speaker 1: the Bengals forty one to twenty two. The Bengals almost
- 11:15Speaker 1: railing from twenty four down. They made a twenty four
- 11:18Speaker 1: to twenty two, they had a two point conversion to tie,
- 11:20Speaker 1: got stopped from the one yard line. They had two
- 11:22Speaker 1: possessions after that drove within field goal range, and then
- 11:26Speaker 1: a sixty one yard return of a Joe Mixon fumble
- 11:29Speaker 1: seemed to be the play that swung everything back in
- 11:31Speaker 1: the Chargers direction. Absolutely, that was the That was the dagger,
- 11:36Speaker 1: you know, it was the Bengals were getting in McPherson
- 11:38Speaker 1: if they weren't already in McPherson field goal range. So
- 11:42Speaker 1: that's a minimum of a ten point swing, maybe fourteen,
- 11:45Speaker 1: and that was That was a tough, tough blow. But
- 11:49Speaker 1: during the course of the game, I thought that explosives
- 11:52Speaker 1: allowed by the defense and turnovers by the offense, or
- 11:56Speaker 1: the story because the Bengals defense responded with some takeaways,
- 11:59Speaker 1: but you have four giveaways. It's tough to beat, you know,
- 12:03Speaker 1: teams in the National Football League. When you're hurting yourself
- 12:06Speaker 1: like that. It's like, man, they're like we talked about
- 12:09Speaker 1: a few times, these teams are good enough to beat
- 12:11Speaker 1: you on their own. You don't need to help them.
- 12:13Speaker 1: And when you help them, it's it's it's hard to
- 12:16Speaker 1: overcome your own you know, mistakes and penalties and turnovers
- 12:21Speaker 1: and things like that. You just have to play a
- 12:23Speaker 1: cleaner football game against a team like this that has
- 12:25Speaker 1: that kind of talent, especially when a couple of the
- 12:28Speaker 1: turnovers are not forced. So Jamar Chase could add a
- 12:31Speaker 1: seventy one yard touchdown Insteady juggles a perfect throw that
- 12:34Speaker 1: becomes an interception. That's almost like the ninety nine yard
- 12:36Speaker 1: pick six against the Steelers, or you think you're going
- 12:38Speaker 1: to score and the other team winds up with the
- 12:40Speaker 1: ball and then Burrow's last interception. I know he's trying
- 12:43Speaker 1: to make a play down by two scores, but that's
- 12:45Speaker 1: just throwing it to the other team in the end
- 12:47Speaker 1: zone instead of living for another play. Yeah exactly. I
- 12:51Speaker 1: mean that that was the final blow against the final
- 12:54Speaker 1: nail in the coffin for the Chargers was that interception.
- 12:58Speaker 1: But but you're right. I mean Jamar Chase at training
- 13:02Speaker 1: camp had some issues catching the football. Now all of
- 13:05Speaker 1: a sudden here in the last you know, a few
- 13:07Speaker 1: quarters of football, he's had some issues in terms of
- 13:10Speaker 1: looking the ball and catching the football. So you don't
- 13:13Speaker 1: want to get a reputation as a streaky player, because
- 13:17Speaker 1: if you're a quarterback, you don't know what you're going
- 13:19Speaker 1: to get when you put the ball in the air.
- 13:20Speaker 1: If you're like throwing it and then crossing your fingers,
- 13:22Speaker 1: that a player is going to be me. Because Joe
- 13:24Speaker 1: Burrow couldn't have thrown the ball any better than he
- 13:26Speaker 1: did on that play. I mean that that was a
- 13:28Speaker 1: beautiful throw and you know Jamar had it and bobbled
- 13:32Speaker 1: it around and spotted it over his shoulder with one
- 13:34Speaker 1: of his hands, and it was crazy. It was that
- 13:38Speaker 1: kind of that kind of a turnover. I haven't seen
- 13:41Speaker 1: unfold that way in quite a while. I mean, defensive
- 13:44Speaker 1: player didn't have to do anything, didn't have to reach
- 13:46Speaker 1: in there, strip it, rip at it. It just it
- 13:49Speaker 1: just ended up right in front of his face. It
- 13:50Speaker 1: was a weird play and could have been a huge
- 13:53Speaker 1: momentum builder because with the acceleration the speed the chase
- 13:56Speaker 1: has and no doubt in my mind that that I
- 13:58Speaker 1: think he scores on that Burrow got sacked a bunch
- 14:03Speaker 1: mix and average two point eight yards per carry. Is
- 14:06Speaker 1: that because of the changes on the offensive line today.
- 14:09Speaker 1: That's a that's a good question. I mean, you know,
- 14:11Speaker 1: I asking, uh, you know, asking guys in the locker
- 14:14Speaker 1: room out to the game. Did they do anything that
- 14:16Speaker 1: you guys did not see them do from a defensive
- 14:19Speaker 1: configuration standpoint, because they are pretty clever in the way
- 14:22Speaker 1: that they use different personnel groupings and they and they
- 14:26Speaker 1: use different uh formation alignments sometimes you know, to break
- 14:32Speaker 1: break some of your tendencies and some of your blocking
- 14:35Speaker 1: patterns that you have a real comfort level with. It
- 14:37Speaker 1: didn't seem to be the case. I mean, I think
- 14:39Speaker 1: it just was they just played so poorly at the
- 14:42Speaker 1: beginning of the football game that they had to probably
- 14:45Speaker 1: change their mind a little bit and what they were
- 14:48Speaker 1: doing offensively. But I didn't think that they abandoned the
- 14:50Speaker 1: running game necessarily, they just never got it going. They
- 14:53Speaker 1: just never got the game the run game executed, and
- 14:56Speaker 1: h you know, I think they I think they had
- 14:59Speaker 1: to make some adjustments though. I could tell Frank on
- 15:01Speaker 1: the sideline was, you know, trying to get some things done.
- 15:05Speaker 1: That grease board was was being drawn on and erased
- 15:07Speaker 1: and drawn on and erased, and they were they were
- 15:09Speaker 1: trying to get some some things done. And I think
- 15:11Speaker 1: some of the adjustments worked out a little bit better
- 15:14Speaker 1: as the game went on. But I'm telling you, you
- 15:16Speaker 1: just in this league, as we always say, from one
- 15:20Speaker 1: week to the next, you just never know. Um teams
- 15:23Speaker 1: do things a different way. They attack a different way,
- 15:26Speaker 1: and the defenses line up to to attack that attack
- 15:30Speaker 1: a different way. This game is so unbelievable. Adjustments and
- 15:35Speaker 1: adjustments to adjustments and adjustments at halftime to adjustments, and
- 15:38Speaker 1: it just continues through the through the entire football game.
- 15:41Speaker 1: Are you reasonably confident, based on the way he finished
- 15:43Speaker 1: the game that burrows pinky finger and his right hand
- 15:46Speaker 1: is not going to be a big problem. Yeah. I
- 15:47Speaker 1: asked Zac about injuries, you know, after the game, and
- 15:50Speaker 1: of course, you know, he says, no update at this
- 15:52Speaker 1: point in time. But I would, I would hope and
- 15:54Speaker 1: think that, you know, the big, big deal is going
- 15:59Speaker 1: to be how much swelling does he get tomorrow? You know,
- 16:02Speaker 1: sometimes those kind of injuries, you know, I've had injuries
- 16:05Speaker 1: before where it's like, yeah, I don't think it's that bad,
- 16:07Speaker 1: and go and ice it and then go to bed
- 16:09Speaker 1: and overnight blows up like a balloon, you know, and
- 16:12Speaker 1: now you've got to get all that swelling out, and
- 16:14Speaker 1: so it'll be interesting. I think. I think the next
- 16:17Speaker 1: twenty four hours are going to be, you know, very
- 16:19Speaker 1: interesting to determine what kind of impact is going to
- 16:22Speaker 1: have on him next week and you know, hopefully not
- 16:26Speaker 1: anymore than next week. But they didn't. They did not
- 16:30Speaker 1: do anything like rush him in to get X rays
- 16:32Speaker 1: or anything like that. So I don't think they're looking
- 16:34Speaker 1: at any fractures or anything of that nature. I think
- 16:37Speaker 1: it's just bruising, and with bruising comes swelling. And that's
- 16:40Speaker 1: the big question in my mind, how much swelling will
- 16:42Speaker 1: there be in that in those joints. Zach Taylor seemed
- 16:45Speaker 1: more frustrated than usual after a Bengals loss. I don't
- 16:49Speaker 1: know if I'm you know, one hundred percent certain of that,
- 16:52Speaker 1: but that's the vibe that he gave off in the
- 16:54Speaker 1: news conference room. I'm sure the four turnover has had
- 16:56Speaker 1: something to do with that. He also seemed angry with
- 16:58Speaker 1: himself or some of the Bengals clock management in this game.
- 17:01Speaker 1: And then I wonder, big picture, tough schedule going forward,
- 17:04Speaker 1: home game against the Chargers, a team that's obviously got
- 17:07Speaker 1: some talent, but still was a game over five hundred,
- 17:10Speaker 1: if he felt like a really good opportunity slipped away. Yeah,
- 17:12Speaker 1: I think that's the big part of I think everything
- 17:15Speaker 1: kind of boils to that where it's like, you know,
- 17:17Speaker 1: if we had taken care of business here with an
- 17:19Speaker 1: eight and four record against another conference opponent, would would
- 17:25Speaker 1: have put ourselves in pretty good shape. Now you know,
- 17:27Speaker 1: you've you've instead of stepping ahead of the pack, you've
- 17:30Speaker 1: stepped back to the pack. And now you're, you know,
- 17:33Speaker 1: amongst a whole you know, plusthora of other teams that
- 17:36Speaker 1: you wanted to try to start to separate from. So
- 17:39Speaker 1: I think I think that's the frustration, and I think
- 17:42Speaker 1: it's frustration that not just a phase didn't play up
- 17:46Speaker 1: to snuff. Everything was not up to snuff. Players, coaches,
- 17:52Speaker 1: special teams offense as a unit defense as a unit.
- 17:55Speaker 1: Nobody can say I played winning football. I don't think
- 17:58Speaker 1: any group can. And that's the frustrating thing is, you know,
- 18:02Speaker 1: even when you're going through something like that, to be
- 18:05Speaker 1: at twenty four twenty two after it's tough being spot
- 18:08Speaker 1: in a team, a good team in the NFL twenty
- 18:10Speaker 1: four points and thinking, you know, I was still in
- 18:13Speaker 1: this and they felt that way, and they came back
- 18:16Speaker 1: to a point where I mean they were threatening to
- 18:18Speaker 1: take a legitimate lead, and then they spit the bit again.
- 18:21Speaker 1: So it's just that, you know, you put yourself behind
- 18:26Speaker 1: the eight ball by putting yourself on your schedule in
- 18:28Speaker 1: all three phases, and then you start to write the
- 18:31Speaker 1: ship a little bit and then you just say, ah,
- 18:34Speaker 1: you know, it wasn't meant to be. We're just going
- 18:37Speaker 1: to make all these self destruction moves again. That's the
- 18:40Speaker 1: frustration I think is that you know, they just never
- 18:43Speaker 1: really gave themselves a chance other than that little spurt
- 18:47Speaker 1: a moment and they scored twenty two points in fourteen
- 18:49Speaker 1: minutes and thirty nine seconds. I mean, it's not like this.
- 18:52Speaker 1: This this football team doesn't have talent offensively but you
- 18:57Speaker 1: can't give it away four times. You can't. You can't
- 18:59Speaker 1: give four possessions away like that against anybody. The Bengals
- 19:02Speaker 1: have had good luck where injuries are concerned this year. Obviously,
- 19:06Speaker 1: Trey Waynes has been out, Joseph Osai got hurt in
- 19:08Speaker 1: the first preseason game. But now, as is inevitably the
- 19:12Speaker 1: case in the NFL, they're starting to add up. They
- 19:15Speaker 1: didn't have Hopkins or Reef on the offensive line. Darius
- 19:18Speaker 1: Phillips missed the game. During the game, Burrow hurts his
- 19:20Speaker 1: pinky finger. Marcus Bailey went out with a shoulder injury.
- 19:23Speaker 1: Logan Wilson went out with a shoulder injury. Should obey
- 19:26Speaker 1: A Wooje went out with a foot injury. Of all
- 19:28Speaker 1: of these injuries, which one gives you the most concern? Well,
- 19:31Speaker 1: that's a good question. You know. I think that the one,
- 19:35Speaker 1: the one that I'm concerned might be the longest in
- 19:38Speaker 1: terms of damage done, is Logan Wilson's shoulder. I just
- 19:42Speaker 1: have a feeling, you know, it's very rare for a
- 19:44Speaker 1: shoulder injury to cause a cart to take you off
- 19:47Speaker 1: the field, So, you know, was there some sort of
- 19:49Speaker 1: a dislocation a major separation and things that if that's
- 19:53Speaker 1: the case, we're not looking at just a few days.
- 19:55Speaker 1: We're looking at a significant amount of time. So I
- 19:58Speaker 1: think he's an impactful guy, you know, a playmaker type
- 20:02Speaker 1: individual for the for the defensive football team. You know.
- 20:05Speaker 1: It seems like a lot of the other injuries I
- 20:07Speaker 1: think are a shorter, you know, potential time frame. I think, honestly,
- 20:12Speaker 1: and I'm not saying that they were they felt like
- 20:15Speaker 1: we have this game anyway. But in my mind, the
- 20:17Speaker 1: two offensive linemen that's at today, Trey Hopkins and Riley Reef,
- 20:21Speaker 1: I think it was just to make sure that, okay,
- 20:24Speaker 1: they're close, Let's not go out there and exacerbate it
- 20:26Speaker 1: and make it a couple more weeks. Let's just make
- 20:28Speaker 1: sure give it a few more days now that it
- 20:31Speaker 1: feels decent, give it another few days where you don't
- 20:34Speaker 1: have to play again for you know, over a week,
- 20:37Speaker 1: if we if we are smart with this, and you
- 20:39Speaker 1: should be able to finish the season. I think that's
- 20:41Speaker 1: the move they made with those two guys. I'd be
- 20:43Speaker 1: shocked if they don't play against San Francisco, but it
- 20:46Speaker 1: would have been nice to have them today as well.
- 20:48Speaker 1: But you can't have your cake and eat it too.
- 20:50Speaker 1: You know, once you make a decision, you can't look
- 20:52Speaker 1: back on it, and you just have to decide that
- 20:54Speaker 1: that was the best decision to make and we'll move
- 20:57Speaker 1: on from there. But Man's is playing so well that
- 21:01Speaker 1: one too. I mean, if if he's got a Sometimes
- 21:04Speaker 1: a foot injury is brutal because there's so many little
- 21:08Speaker 1: bones and tendons and lincolns and stuff and a foot
- 21:12Speaker 1: and that's you know, as Bill Walton, I mean, Bill
- 21:14Speaker 1: Walton's career because of foot injuries just he never really
- 21:18Speaker 1: had any kind of career he could have had at
- 21:20Speaker 1: the next level. And he's a big, huge guy. It's
- 21:22Speaker 1: like a tower with a crack foundation, but a guy
- 21:25Speaker 1: like a woozier that has to plant and cut and explode.
- 21:28Speaker 1: And when you have foot foot damage, I hope that's
- 21:31Speaker 1: not significant, you know. I hope it's just like a
- 21:33Speaker 1: foot sprain and there's no like displacement of bones or
- 21:37Speaker 1: you know, like a ligament snapping over a tendon or
- 21:40Speaker 1: whatever those things that can happen with a foot. I remember,
- 21:45Speaker 1: the most brutal injury that I had is you you
- 21:49Speaker 1: have these these bones under the ball, of your foot
- 21:52Speaker 1: and you can have none, you can have one, or
- 21:54Speaker 1: you can have two. Well, I had two under the
- 21:56Speaker 1: ball of my foot and I cracked one of them
- 21:58Speaker 1: right in half. And man, I mean it's brutal because
- 22:02Speaker 1: everything you do is right there at the point. So
- 22:04Speaker 1: if it's depending on where it is in his foot
- 22:07Speaker 1: and everything he has to do around at that one,
- 22:09Speaker 1: I guess concerns me a little bit too, But you know,
- 22:12Speaker 1: hopefully the others are just treatment. Rest and come back
- 22:17Speaker 1: and play more on Sunday's game. Join Lap and Lance

- 22:47Speaker 1: fun Fact segment, where you get to know the person
- 22:50Speaker 1: under the pads. Talk for some fun facts with running
- 22:53Speaker 1: back samaj p Rhine. Born and raised in Alabama before
- 22:57Speaker 1: moving to Texas and attending high school there. Where did
- 23:00Speaker 1: you spend most of your childhood and what were some
- 23:03Speaker 1: of the things you enjoyed doing as a kid. I'd
- 23:05Speaker 1: say early childhood. I split when my mom moved to Texas.
- 23:09Speaker 1: I split a lot of my time between Texas and Alabama.
- 23:13Speaker 1: And when I was in Alabama, it was outside in
- 23:15Speaker 1: the woods, and when I was in Texas, it was
- 23:19Speaker 1: you know, outside in the street, you know, playing football
- 23:22Speaker 1: or basketball or you know, whatever I can get my
- 23:25Speaker 1: hands on. You are the only Samaj in NFL history.
- 23:30Speaker 1: Is there a story or a meaning behind your first name?
- 23:36Speaker 1: The story is not as glamorous as people may sing.
- 23:40Speaker 1: My grandfather's name is Samuel, and I have uncle's name Samuel,
- 23:45Speaker 1: and my mom she wanted to sam but not Samuel,
- 23:49Speaker 1: So she just came up with Samaj and said, so
- 23:55Speaker 1: was it frequently mispronounced when you were a kid, And
- 23:58Speaker 1: if so, was that annoying? Oh yeah, it still is
- 24:01Speaker 1: mispronounced today. Um, not so much annoying. I mean I
- 24:06Speaker 1: find it kind of funny, you know, to hear people
- 24:08Speaker 1: my first day my last name. Actually, Um, you know,
- 24:11Speaker 1: I've heard some off the wall things, but it's a
- 24:14Speaker 1: fun little game for me. To see if people actually
- 24:16Speaker 1: get it right. And if they do, you know, kudos
- 24:19Speaker 1: to them. But if not, then I don't. I don't
- 24:21Speaker 1: hold any grudges. We're doing fun facts with some my JP. Ryan.
- 24:25Speaker 1: I've read several stories about your weightlifting exploits as a kid.
- 24:30Speaker 1: How and when did you get started? I think I
- 24:32Speaker 1: got started freshman sophomore year in high school. Um, I
- 24:37Speaker 1: mean Texas football. You know, they they were, especially at
- 24:42Speaker 1: my high school, they were we we got after in
- 24:45Speaker 1: the weight room, and uh, you know, I wasn't really
- 24:48Speaker 1: I had dumbbells here and there, you know in middle school,
- 24:51Speaker 1: but not that much. Had like twenty pounds dumbbells like
- 24:57Speaker 1: duct tape some bricks on them. U. But you know,
- 25:00Speaker 1: other than that, you know, high school. It is when
- 25:02Speaker 1: I really got started in my junior senior year in
- 25:05Speaker 1: high school. It is when it really, you know, really
- 25:07Speaker 1: picked up. Like I was strongish freshman sophomore year, but
- 25:11Speaker 1: junior senior year, if they got a few years under
- 25:13Speaker 1: my belt, that's when it really really ramped up for me.
- 25:15Speaker 1: Let's backtrack for a second. You duct taped bricks to dumbbells,
- 25:22Speaker 1: It's just twenty pounds dumbbells. And at my parents' house,
- 25:28Speaker 1: they had some some some bricks that they didn't use
- 25:31Speaker 1: when they were building the house stacked in the backyard.
- 25:34Speaker 1: So I would go out and get a couple and
- 25:36Speaker 1: just duct tape them one of the dumbbells, whatever it takes.
- 25:41Speaker 1: So as legend has it, you once lifted a car
- 25:45Speaker 1: to help a woman change attire. True story or urban legend.
- 25:52Speaker 1: The smart car count Absolutely it's a car. Yes, I mean,
- 25:56Speaker 1: I guess you could say it's true. All right, I
- 25:58Speaker 1: want all the details. Subscribe Lifting a smart car to
- 26:02Speaker 1: help somebody change a tire. Um. It was later one
- 26:06Speaker 1: night and I just seen she seemed like she was struggling,
- 26:10Speaker 1: and um, she had a jack. But somehow the jack
- 26:14Speaker 1: like it fell over and it just got wedged in
- 26:19Speaker 1: between like the car and the ground. So um, I
- 26:24Speaker 1: lifted it enough to get the jack back right to
- 26:27Speaker 1: for the for the jack to hold the car up
- 26:29Speaker 1: while we switched her tire. Tremendous story. We're talking to somebody,
- 26:34Speaker 1: JP Ryan. After great high school football career, you chose
- 26:37Speaker 1: to play at Oklahoma. You were actually part of the
- 26:40Speaker 1: same recruiting class as your current teammate Joe Mixon, y
- 26:43Speaker 1: O you and what were some of the things you
- 26:46Speaker 1: enjoyed the most about your time at Oklahoma. I chose,
- 26:49Speaker 1: oh you simply because of the opportunities that you know,
- 26:53Speaker 1: that presented themselves there. You know, like you said, I was,
- 26:57Speaker 1: I was coming in with with Joe Mix and and um,
- 27:01Speaker 1: you know, they had two or three guys that were
- 27:04Speaker 1: on their way out, so you know, the way we
- 27:07Speaker 1: looked at it like we're gonna come in and you know,
- 27:09Speaker 1: we're playing right away because you know, there's there's a
- 27:12Speaker 1: big void that they you know that they need field,
- 27:14Speaker 1: and we just felt like, you know, we could come
- 27:17Speaker 1: right in and play. And that was one of my
- 27:19Speaker 1: biggest reasons. And and because it was close enough to homework,
- 27:26Speaker 1: could get back in a decent amount of time, but
- 27:28Speaker 1: far enough away where I didn't feel like, you know,
- 27:32Speaker 1: my parents were in my backyard, so you know that
- 27:34Speaker 1: was that was fun. So you know, just get done
- 27:37Speaker 1: in practice and you're five six hours away from home,
- 27:40Speaker 1: so on or off, they can just run home and
- 27:43Speaker 1: you know, had like nothing happened. But but you know,
- 27:47Speaker 1: as far as um, my experience there was great. You know,
- 27:52Speaker 1: to Norm's a great college town. It's um, it was
- 27:57Speaker 1: just an extremely fun environment. You know, I didn't do
- 28:01Speaker 1: much while I was there, but you know, they they
- 28:04Speaker 1: treated us all, you know, fantastic, and it was just
- 28:07Speaker 1: a great place to be. We're going to turn the
- 28:09Speaker 1: clock back to twenty fourteen. I November fifteenth of that year,
- 28:13Speaker 1: Wisconsin's Melvin Gordon set the NCAA rushing record by running
- 28:17Speaker 1: for four hundred and eight yards. He broke a record
- 28:19Speaker 1: that had lasted for fifteen years. He got to enjoy
- 28:22Speaker 1: it for one week because I November twenty second of
- 28:26Speaker 1: that year, you set the record that still stands on
- 28:30Speaker 1: a rainy day against Kansas, thirty four carries, four hundred
- 28:34Speaker 1: twenty seven yards and five touchdowns. What are your most
- 28:38Speaker 1: vivid memories of that incredible day. The most vivid moment
- 28:45Speaker 1: was the week before. We were on our way home.
- 28:49Speaker 1: I forgot who we were playing, and we were all
- 28:53Speaker 1: on the bus talking about what Melvin had just did,
- 28:58Speaker 1: and we were like crazy, like there's no way anybody's
- 29:01Speaker 1: gonna touch that record for however many years, you know,
- 29:05Speaker 1: we were all going crazy for him. And then when
- 29:10Speaker 1: our game came, it was actually delayed because of lightning,
- 29:13Speaker 1: and I'd already known it was going to be a
- 29:17Speaker 1: run the ball type of day, and you know, I
- 29:20Speaker 1: just went out and we ran the ball. Unfortunately, you know,
- 29:27Speaker 1: our starting running back he on the first drive, he
- 29:29Speaker 1: went out in fumble, and that gave me the opportunity
- 29:33Speaker 1: to come in midway through the first quarter, and from
- 29:38Speaker 1: there I just took my opportunities and ran with it.
- 29:42Speaker 1: I'll say, have you ever discussed this with Melvin Gordon?
- 29:46Speaker 1: Not in person, No, but we message back and forth
- 29:49Speaker 1: on Twitter, and you know, I was like, man, my bad.
- 29:53Speaker 1: It was blame my offensive line. They made me do it,
- 29:57Speaker 1: and you know I was shying to sit out and
- 29:58Speaker 1: let you you know, let you have you, you know whatever.
- 30:01Speaker 1: But you know he was, he was cool about it.
- 30:04Speaker 1: Then we got a good laugh at it. But you know, no,
- 30:07Speaker 1: we never never talked about it in person, but you
- 30:10Speaker 1: know it was I feel sorry for him, but you
- 30:13Speaker 1: know it was we had a we had a good
- 30:14Speaker 1: little moment there. So you had runs of thirty three,
- 30:17Speaker 1: thirty four, forty two, forty nine, and sixty six in
- 30:20Speaker 1: that game. That's two hundred and twenty four yards on
- 30:22Speaker 1: just five carries. But here's the most amazing stat of
- 30:26Speaker 1: all to me, you left the game with more than
- 30:29Speaker 1: twelve minutes to go, you could have rushed for five
- 30:33Speaker 1: hundred yards. Do you think your record is going to
- 30:36Speaker 1: last for a while and do you care if it does?
- 30:40Speaker 1: We both me and Melvin both came out with a
- 30:43Speaker 1: bunch of time left, so we both could have probably
- 30:46Speaker 1: ran for a lot more than we did. But as
- 30:50Speaker 1: far as how long it'll stay, and I have no idea,
- 30:53Speaker 1: I'm semi surprised it hasn't been beaten, you know, with
- 30:56Speaker 1: these crazy offenses nowadays and crazy numbers that people are up.
- 31:00Speaker 1: But I don't really don't really care much about, you know,
- 31:05Speaker 1: how long it lasts and will it ever be beaten?
- 31:08Speaker 1: I mean, I hope it does. I hope someone has
- 31:10Speaker 1: that great all day. But you know, when the day comes,
- 31:13Speaker 1: it's gonna be It's gonna be great. So people can
- 31:15Speaker 1: stop talking about minds. One more question about a record.
- 31:20Speaker 1: Oklahoma has had some of the greatest running backs in
- 31:22Speaker 1: college football history. Heisman Trophy winner Billy Simms, Heisman Trophy
- 31:26Speaker 1: winner Steve Owens, Adrian Peterson, DeMarco Murray, your current teammate
- 31:29Speaker 1: Joe Mixon, etc. You are the all time leading rusher
- 31:32Speaker 1: at Oklahoma and you did it in only three years.
- 31:35Speaker 1: Is that a big point of pride to you? M
- 31:39Speaker 1: I didn't come in thinking, you know, when I leave Oklahoma,
- 31:43Speaker 1: I want to be this, this and that. I mean,
- 31:46Speaker 1: I just took all of my opportunities in stride, and
- 31:49Speaker 1: you know, at the end of my career, there's just
- 31:52Speaker 1: so happened that I became the all time leading rusher.
- 31:55Speaker 1: I mean, it's a great feat to have, you know,
- 31:57Speaker 1: like you mentioned all the great backs that that have
- 32:00Speaker 1: been there before me. I mean, I love it. I
- 32:05Speaker 1: don't hang my hat on it though. You know, it's
- 32:07Speaker 1: not something that I really boast about. It just the
- 32:11Speaker 1: opportunity was there and I took it. A few more
- 32:15Speaker 1: fun facts with somebody, JP Ryan. You were drafted by
- 32:18Speaker 1: Washington in twenty seventeen. Describe your draft experience. Didn't want
- 32:24Speaker 1: to get my hopes up about, you know, where when
- 32:28Speaker 1: I was going. I was just grateful for the opportunity
- 32:30Speaker 1: to get my name called. UM didn't care where it
- 32:33Speaker 1: was called. I just needed the opportunity, and you know
- 32:37Speaker 1: it was it was a fun experience to have you know,
- 32:40Speaker 1: family and friends around and to have them experience, you know,
- 32:45Speaker 1: having a name called on the TV. I was cool
- 32:47Speaker 1: with my my wife and my mom, but it was
- 32:52Speaker 1: I'm glad I got to experience it. You know. I
- 32:54Speaker 1: know some guys they have to take her harder route
- 32:57Speaker 1: than me, you know, going through free agency and all
- 32:59Speaker 1: of that undrafted free a and then all of that.
- 33:01Speaker 1: But Tom, you know, it was cool, and you know,
- 33:04Speaker 1: I just I don't think I really fully grasped what
- 33:11Speaker 1: was going on while I was going on, but you know,
- 33:13Speaker 1: after I got the call and talked with all of
- 33:16Speaker 1: the the the reps and all of that, all of
- 33:19Speaker 1: those guys, and just got to sit down and realize,
- 33:23Speaker 1: you know, out of all of the athletes in the world,
- 33:27Speaker 1: you know, they chose me. So that was that was
- 33:29Speaker 1: pretty cool experience. All right. A few wild card questions
- 33:32Speaker 1: to wrap it up. Who is your all time favorite
- 33:36Speaker 1: athlete in any sport and why? You know? The crazy
- 33:41Speaker 1: part about that is before I started playing football, and
- 33:47Speaker 1: even still to this day, I don't watch sports nope,
- 33:53Speaker 1: outside of film, and you know what we do here.
- 33:56Speaker 1: I not a sportswaher as crazy that maybe I just
- 34:02Speaker 1: never really got into into playing or into watching sports
- 34:06Speaker 1: at all, like doing it, don't love watching it. Exactly
- 34:10Speaker 1: all right. When it comes to your money, what do
- 34:13Speaker 1: you like to splurge on? Definitely car parts. My uh
- 34:21Speaker 1: my wife hates it. But anything with a car, you know.
- 34:24Speaker 1: I have a twenty ten Camaro back home that has
- 34:28Speaker 1: a big engine, big supercharger on. It's loud, it's obnoxious,
- 34:35Speaker 1: and it's uh one of the faster cars that I've
- 34:39Speaker 1: ever been in. But anytime that I can work on
- 34:42Speaker 1: my car or my truck, and that's what that's where
- 34:45Speaker 1: most of my money goes. Outside of the kids. I
- 34:49Speaker 1: see the twinkle in your eye. You are a car guy. Oh.
- 34:52Speaker 1: I love them, love them to death. I'm glad I
- 34:57Speaker 1: have a job that can support my my habits. But
- 35:02Speaker 1: when it comes to when it comes to cars, I
- 35:05Speaker 1: love everything about them. Last thing, this is deep. If
- 35:09Speaker 1: you could meet anybody in history statesman, politician, actor, or athlete,
- 35:14Speaker 1: whoever it might be, who would that person be? Honestly,
- 35:19Speaker 1: I think it would be doctor Martin Luther King? Just
- 35:25Speaker 1: so I can ask, like, ye, how did you keep
- 35:30Speaker 1: the mindset that you know we're gonna be peaceful about
