- 0:34creator writer and artist behind the calamitous black Devils The Infernal
- 0:38packed and the upcoming [ __ ] of Babylon thank you for coming on the podcast
- 0:42thanks a lot guys that's good to have
- 0:44you thanks thanks uh so did you guys uh
- 0:49get a chance to read um infernal pack it was climet black Devils you guys got
- 0:53right we did yeah we bought clus black uh I then got infernal packed on
- 0:58comixology so I could read it as well cuz I actually I really enjoyed clamus
- 1:02black Devils so oh cool I was like awesome yeah I was like cool I'll check
- 1:06them both out and now I'm excited about the new one yeah yeah uh so with
- 1:10calamitus black Devils um that that got
- 1:14picked up after um pretty much issue two was being wrapped up so all that anybody
- 1:21had seen at that point was issue one and um so then it it became like no you're
- 1:27no longer putting out issues uh
- 2:29didn't say anything like you know my work was [ __ ] or anything he was just
- 2:33like oh it's you know you could do this different you could do that different so
- 2:36I started taking his advice then um I showed it to uh CB suboi the next year
- 2:43who uh works for Marvel and and he gave me more advice so when I went into the
- 2:48infernal pact um I had already started creating some of the pages uh so I
- 2:53couldn't use his uh nuggets of wisdom for parts of issue one but uh as I went
- 2:59through the the process so yeah you you listen to the people that are in the
- 3:03industry and the books that you like and you can sort of start to to figure out
- 3:08how things are supposed to you know how the the whole art of paneling a comic
- 3:13book is like something in of itself too it's not just the artwork it's it's like
- 3:18you know there are words on the page and how many words can you use and so I yeah
- 3:23right yeah and um Rachel daring who lettered issue one of the infernal pact
- 3:29um I like sent her the script and she's like no no no no you've you've
- 3:33completely we can't use this and so um she SED G she schooled me on you know
- 3:40rules that had to do with lettering and um you
- 3:46know how many words you can physically use on a panel without it being like
- 3:51just a roadblock for the reader so yeah right um yeah it's been a learning
- 3:56process I'm still learning you know I don't I always feel like there's
- 4:52[Music]
- 5:01um but that's you know that's just my opinion of it too um so with that book I
- 5:07was able to produce about two pages a day okay and and as far as the writing
- 5:13goes that's actually the longest part um because I I I can't tell you how long it
- 5:18takes me to write something sometimes like uh infernal packed came pretty
- 5:23quick um I think I wrote it in like two months it was done like the whole series
- 5:30was written and then with um climat this black Devils I was actually still
- 5:36writing it issue by issue so I didn't
- 5:39have like an ending until I the ending
- 5:44and then yeah Stephen King style it it was very organic you know it's like one
- 5:49of these things like well how is this going to work and then you you don't
- 5:52want to follow into you don't want to do too many cliche things you don't want to
- 5:56make it too predictable but um you also want to make it you have to tie up all
- 6:01these ends these loose ends and stuff and I I don't know how successfully I
- 6:05did that I feel like I had so many left open that I was just like well there's
- 6:10more to it but it kind of leaves room for a sequel that way yeah yeah yeah it
- 6:14but it's also kind of a copout too sometimes because you're like intention
- 6:18was to tell one story not make multiple stories but I feel like if you read that
- 6:23and I never wrote something about it again you'd be okay with it um yeah well sometimes
- 6:30you know you don't want everything explained and they can go too far with
- 6:33that too so you know yes it's nice to leave the reader like the chance to fill
- 6:39in the blanks yes yeah just like a movie you know um nobody needs to go you don't
- 6:44need a 20 minute long exposition of some talking head like telling that's show us
- 6:50what's going on yeah exactly or give us little hints here and there and let
- 6:54people put the the pieces together on their own but uh horror Babylon
- 7:00I started writing it in December and I finished it maybe a month
- 7:07and a half ago right so it a much longer process but it is a complete story it
- 7:13stands alone it's all by itself and I'm really like I think this is my best
- 7:18piece of writing that I've done so far uh cool it's it's like a pretty Epic
- 7:24Journey for this woman who uh so yeah I'll tell you right now
- 7:30um I have a Kickstarter up called horor bon and it's about this um shock rocker
- 7:35Cherry Blackbird who has um sold her
- 7:39soul under distress under dress uh for fame and fortune and I I won't tell you
- 7:45what why she had to sell her soul because that comes out in the wash later
- 7:49but um basically I I won't say why but I do like your explanation
- 7:56for why she does that I think it's a good theory
- 8:01yes yes and um so yeah she sells her soul she becomes kind of like a
- 8:08degenerate um just just the worst kind of celebrity you can think of where
- 8:13she's kind of a [ __ ] and she is a chronic alcoholic and Drug user but she
- 8:19like the thing is is that because she's sold her soul she just doesn't care
- 8:23because she knows that she's got this time she's not die beforehand and and
- 8:28that's never really fully explained but in my mind I feel like if you sell your
- 8:32soul to the devil he'll keep you alive until the contract's up just because
- 8:35he's like that yeah so um uh basically she's given up all hope
- 8:42in life and the the Devil comes to her on her 26th birthday and basically says
- 8:46that if um she can collect these seven demonic spirits that have escaped from
- 8:52hell then um he'll give her a
- 8:55pass so um there it is that's like the the buildup to the story and then she
- 9:01goes off on this journey uh to collect these these
- 9:07Spirits the these demonic souls and um she meets people along like one of
- 9:13them is her best friend who's the basist in her band and uh then she beats the
- 9:18black hen and he's got his uh crony this this woman uh who ends up later on
- 9:25becoming their drummer and so it's kind of like it's fun in some way it's it's
- 9:30Got U it's got some dark humor there's I like to laugh and I like to grow loud at
- 9:35the same time and it's also like it's got a lot of um that exploitative feel
- 9:41of a 1970s film where it's got like awesome cheesy on liners and stuff like
- 9:46that but you know mixed with gross out it's very like I I guess it would be
- 9:50comparable to something like the Evil Dead part two oh
- 9:54nice um perfect but it it's also got a
- 9:58SAS factor to it too so lots of nudity
- 10:01violence um you know filthy language
- 10:05drug use it's pretty fun um so it's kind of a sequel to The Infernal pack right
- 10:11because I know I mean uh it's got some returning characters from what I can
- 10:14tell some returning characters yes the black being like the most prominent one
- 10:19but there are others U oh okay cool but uh you don't have to read The Infernal
- 10:25pack to figure out who they are or why they fit into the story it gets
- 10:29explained but yeah the The Infernal pact for anybody that doesn't know is um this
- 10:35story about these three meth heads that sell their soul for drugs they wind up
- 10:39first they're turning into um the the woman beatric who's the like leader of
- 10:46the the three dumb asses that do this uh she she turns into this witch monster
- 10:52and like eats people with her vagina
- 10:54and the guys turn into werewolves and um they they have these blackout moments
- 11:01and they start slaughtering people and they end up killing this biker and they
- 11:05get hunted down by this biker gang that ends up
- 11:08worshiping this demon and uh so this Demon's got his own agenda and the
- 11:14devil's got its own agenda and they're
- 11:18trying to you know save themselves from you know being cursed and it it's that's
- 11:24also a fun story yeah yes it is and the way kind of what Drew us to you in uh in
- 11:31the first place we met you at Boston ComicCon yes uh and uh firstly the art
- 11:35style because you had some stuff on display uh and you had a portrait of HB
- 11:39Lovecraft and then you described the plot of uh of calamitous black devils
- 11:44and I was like well I mean I gotta buy this guy's stuff yeah yeah well climate of black
- 11:50Devils just like the kitchen sinks being thrown at you know it's World War II
- 11:55horror Elite Brigade of Army operatives and you know Nazi zombies and ancient
- 12:01gods and they get sucked through a doorway and there's mutants and aliens
- 12:05and yeah it's crazy yeah it's a good story to pull people in yeah they're all
- 12:10all of them I mean I me I've read the two uh and they they are fun and like
- 12:15like you know over the top and and great so uh I think our listeners would
- 12:20probably enjoy them quite a lot if they like listening to us they'll probably
- 12:24like reading your stories the the Wheelhouse is definitely invented for PE
- 12:29you know for my books is definitely for people that like the horror and sci-fi
- 12:32genre and if you like art comedy and stuff like that uh certainly or a
- 12:37Babylon will be up your alley as well yeah and then um so yeah that
- 12:43Kickstarter is running now I got all sorts of cool stuff with it I me and my
- 12:47wife we also make a uh Tiana Bible and
- 12:51those are like mini porn comics so
- 12:55um what happens is I sort of I draw a couple of things and then she writes a
- 13:00story about it and then so the the first one we did is
- 13:05about uh basically the the Duke and Duchess infiltrate this um and they're
- 13:11pretty brainless stories because it's all about you know the it's just the
- 13:14porn yeah it's yeah they they go to they do like a Scooby-Doo investigation of
- 13:20this ancient cult and realize that it's full of sheales that they end up getting
- 13:23into an orgy with um the next one they go and search
- 13:29of the Abominable Snowman and so you can I I don't have to tell you anymore
- 13:34that's that's all you yep sure um so that that's available through
- 13:40uh the kickstarter uh we also have um so I got four variant covers by some pretty cool
- 13:46artists yeah those are cool yeah um so I got JK Woodward he does Doctor Who and
- 13:52Star Trek and he did um Fallen Angel so
- 13:57he he's pretty big name out there his is like a painting and he pretty much just
- 14:02did a Rogues gallery for the um the cover and then um got Ben Bishop who's
- 14:08been working on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and he's got a lot of aonic
- 14:12covers coming out for them uh then there's U Mor glum which is a a
- 14:19pseudonym for another artist and he uh is the artist for escape from Jesus
- 14:23Island and he did he his is like a fully digital painted piece where she's like
- 14:28rocking out on the cover and then um
- 14:31Rich Wood who has been working on Kyra jungle girl with uh Craig Russo for Dark
- 14:38Horse
- 14:39Comics and he Zombie Bomb and um his
- 14:45artwork's pretty amazing he did a like a ratfink sort of cover so they all they
- 14:52all came at me with their different interpretations of like what a rock
- 14:54poster would look like and I thought that was pretty cool awesome yeah great
- 14:59for the reward tiers as well yeah yeah and then the my cover will glow in the dark
- 15:06because so you got you got an extra Edge on them well yeah the thing is that's going
- 15:12to be the regular edition right so um that's how it's going to be printed yeah
- 15:17for you know however long it goes but um the variant covers are all Limited in
- 15:22quantity and they're only getting one print run just sort of incentify it uh
- 15:28for and you know it's not just going to be in the kickstarter like if you can
- 15:31find me at a convention later I'll probably have a couple of those on me
- 15:35too but the regular edition is mostly what's being printed and then um we got
- 15:40exclusive posters uh somebody already got the uh tier reward which is you
- 15:45could be the devil in this comic oh awesome yeah I saw that that's awesome
- 15:50some I I know the person who who got it too so it's going to be interesting to U
- 15:55do that person as the devil and then you
- 15:59can be a victim so you can get killed and I I kind of like I saw that
- 16:06Luther stro had done that um the artist from that was like you know you can be a
- 16:11victim in my comic and I was like that's a pretty cool idea so it is it's I I was
- 16:16like who you know somebody could get like blown up or ripped apart or
- 16:20something and in this book I have like you know there's a bunch of
- 16:25people get wasted at one point and so that that's where the victims could be
- 16:30in there and it's kind of cool when when people buy those because I don't have to
- 16:34think of what a character is going to look like it's I have for it so I'm like
- 16:39that's it's a win-win for me yeah and it makes them feel like they're a part of
- 16:43it yeah but it also CU we did a Kickstarter um we made a video once and
- 16:49we found there were a lot of setbacks with um the amount of money that people
- 16:53put in we found that we were spending that or almost that amount on the
- 16:59rewards yeah we mostly just did t-shirts and physical things and I think things
- 17:03like what what you you're talking about they're way better because it's personal
- 17:07for the person right and it doesn't you're not going to like it doesn't cost
- 17:10you anything extra to yeah yeah like
- 17:13yeah um so my buddy Ben he he said to me not too long ago he was just like you
- 17:20know I like to approach things in a DIY sort of uh approach you know do
- 17:26everything yourself what could I produce on own that doesn't cost me anything but
- 17:30can like right make somebody a part of it and so
- 17:35yeah I was like all right what can I do all by myself that I don't need you know
- 17:41a printer or you know a low a low cost to me to to make this happen so I have a
- 17:47lot of stuff like that in there too where yes it cost it cost me my time it
- 17:52cost me my effort right but I also get to make something really cool on the
- 17:56other end um yeah like the the Tiana Bibles we make those in our house and um
- 18:03part of that is because I don't want to lose any kind of relationships with printers but
- 18:09um the other part is I want it to look authentic and um so I I sold a couple of
- 18:14these at Boston to people that actually collect Tiana Bibles and they were like
- 18:19really happy with them they're like oh my God these look so so I knew I did it
- 18:24right and um and I make them in a small batch too so they're like a limited
- 18:29thing I make them myself but you know it takes time and
- 18:33effort to put these together because they're all done by hand so yeah
- 18:38um but yeah if you can include people in it they'll they'll share the hell out of
- 18:42your project yeah exactly the other
- 18:46thing is too um actually today um I
- 18:50believe you backed yes I backed yes I
- 18:54did yes so uh I think you put us over the amount of people
- 18:59that we actually had for our last Kickstarter campaign oh oh cool so we've
- 19:03actually gone over the amount of people that have backed the project from all my
- 19:07other previous projects so that's awesome congratulations yeah and so what
- 19:12did you learn by doing like because you've done two previous kickstarters
- 19:16before is there anything you picked up from those that you realized didn't work
- 19:20or yes so um from the first one I got a
- 19:25pretty brutal review from uh John Lee who is aiter for Comics tribe I don't
- 19:32know if he works exclusively with them or anything but he's a really good
- 19:36writer and um he looked at the clamus black devils and gave me a lot of
- 19:42feedback on that but that that wasn't necessarily good but right if you're
- 19:48going to be in this for the long run you're G to make mistakes and you got to
- 19:53learn and you can't make things like that too personal so you you learn and
- 19:58one of the things I learned was these guys knew what they were talking about
- 20:01so I started talking to the guy that um I believe he he just runs it uh and his
- 20:07name's Tyler James and he runs a he he's really big on Kickstarter and he he runs
- 20:13a a podcast and stuff about it as well but me and him started talking about
- 20:18like different things that you could do for uh kickstarters to improve them and
- 20:21I started looking at how he was doing his because he's done quite a few of
- 20:25them and um so with the first one it was like actually the reason I started at
- 20:31Kickstarter was because my friend Tessy launched her album on there and she was
- 20:36the um drummer for dead boy and the Elephant men so um she came out with her
- 20:41solo project and it got backed and I was like oh that's really cool you know what
- 20:45can you tell me about it so she she explained kickstarted to me and I was
- 20:50like oh maybe I could do that too because I wanted to make a comic book
- 20:53and it's been you know drawing and painting and stuff for years but when
- 20:58you do these shows and stuff um you know you're trying to sell something for a
- 21:02couple hundred bucks to a couple thousand dollars and you know it's hard
- 21:07to move that stuff and I was like I I've always loved comic books I love
- 21:11storytelling and I was like all right I and and I did film for a while which I
- 21:17wasn't a um wasn't very successful at
- 21:22uh mostly because I I'm not like a good collaborator with um large amounts of
- 21:27people sure um so it's hard to be a director and and not
- 21:33be necessarily too jazzed on working with people you know yeah
- 21:40totally so I was like you know I can make a comic book as big and cinematic
- 21:44as I want and to answer your question what did I learn from Kickstarter so I
- 21:49launched the first one and um you know I
- 21:53had I had no background on like what I was really supposed to do so I just
- 21:57looked on the kickstarter page and they gave you some advice and then I launched
- 22:02it and then I started reaching out to people and I fortunately had enough
- 22:06friends and family and people that actually had liked my artwork already I
- 22:12was able to get that funded and that was just for one issue of a comic yeah and
- 22:17um and it was it was a low dollar amount and I wasn't thinking big you know I
- 22:21wasn't like I'm gonna get this into Diamond distribution or anything like
- 22:25that I was just like I want to make a comic book and I sell it to you and
- 22:30that's what it is it's not like people are donating to you they are it's an
- 22:34exchange of goods they're giving you money you give them a project everybody
- 22:38wins so um I did a really small print run I think it was like 400 issues of
- 22:43calaminus black Devils number one and from that you know I got I got picked up
- 22:49by Broken Icon Comics and now it has a larger
- 22:53distribution um but only in graphic novel format I wasn't thinking that big
- 22:59and then um so you know when it came around to the next project because now I
- 23:03have now I have climate as black Devils done and I was like oh you know I want
- 23:06to I want to make another book but I don't have you know $5,000 to do this
- 23:12again yeah so um and now I was thinking bigger and this is what the infernal
- 23:16packed and I was like I'm going to make three issues I'm just going to do the
- 23:19whole series I'm going to back it now and I was like I'm going to do it as
- 23:23singles and I I hired CP Wilson who did
- 23:27um wraith for Joe Hill and he's oh yeah
- 23:33for Stuff of Legend as well he did a a
- 23:36cover and then I got Stephen Scott who uh has drawn virtually everything for
- 23:43every company at some uh he did a cover for me so I here
- 23:48I am like I'm like you know if I get these really cool artists on board this
- 23:51will incentivize people to um back my project so I started thinking bigger and
- 23:58and taking advice from the comics tribe guys and then
- 24:03um and and then I started thinking about stretch goals and stuff like that
- 24:06because I hadn't really considered it very much with the first um Kickstarter
- 24:11so one of the stretch goals was everybody that backed it got this free
- 24:14mini comic and I got the cover for that one done by Rich
- 24:18Woodle and uh so we reached that goal and then we reached the second goal
- 24:24which was I was gonna hire a letter which ended up being awesome because Rachel daring
- 24:29uh who has worked on horror anthologies I think it's called Freight of the dark
- 24:33is one of her horror anthologies and she does she works on Archie Comics and all
- 24:37sorts of stuff she's very prolific she she's the one who gave me the advice on
- 24:42you know that I needed to hire an
- 24:46editor I did that and I got Sean
- 24:49Greenleaf who is uh he works on escape
- 24:54from Jesus Island and my books and now
- 24:57he works on oathbound and astop punk as well and I think he has another project
- 25:03that he's working on and I forget what it is and that makes me feel
- 25:07bad he is the guy that I collaborate with the best so cool um my advice to
- 25:13people is um if you're going to do a
- 25:18Kickstarter um really do your research on it ahead
- 25:23of time like for this one I realized that printing cost are really what the
- 25:29big deal is right like I'm trying to get
- 25:32a book printed so um in order to to get those in order to make it feasible to
- 25:39put these books into stores or to get distribution or anything like that if
- 25:42you're an independent Creator you have to buy a big print run in order to do
- 25:48that it's it's thousands of dollars right the cheaper way to do it
- 25:52unfortunately is a graphic novel maybe it's unfortunate maybe it's not I like
- 25:57single issues I'm a I book collector myself yeah right but yeah I'm the
- 26:03opposite I like the novels I like having them all compiled yeah my my wife is a graphic
- 26:09novel person she doesn't buy singles and I realized there's a trend going towards
- 26:14that you know like when I do conventions I can't sell my single issues but I can
- 26:18sell graphic novels so I was like you know after doing this for a couple years
- 26:23now I'm just like you know graphic novels are the way to go give somebody a full story and
- 26:29to to to like read that takes up like maybe a couple hours of their life yeah
- 26:34so um yeah anyway so when I went into this I I I found the the printer that I
- 26:41wanted to use that could do the things I
- 26:44wanted to do with the comic and um yeah
- 26:49so um that's what's led me to to my
- 26:52current phase of of Kickstarter um but
- 26:56the other thing mentioned oh yeah for no no no go ahead sorry I'm not making
- 27:01something that's like a Marvel or DC Comic you know like a lot of lot of the
- 27:06bigger distribution companies aren't going to come near my project and I know
- 27:10that and uh but I don't want to make those books you know I don't want to
- 27:14make something safe and right yeah so Kickstarter is awesome for this
- 27:20because what it does is you build an audience so from the calaminus black
- 27:26Devils I made I made fans and fans came and followed me into the
- 27:31infernal paack and then that built and now they've followed me into horor
- 27:35Babylon and I'm making newer fans so you're you're just constantly growing
- 27:40your fan base and um and I'm doing something that's kind
- 27:45of in a niche market where I I think when you guys saw me at at Boston I was
- 27:49sandwiched next to a woman that was doing like Disney princess pinup yeah
- 27:54that's right like horror and and smut
- 27:58and so that that's a little strange but that's the that's the weird and cool
- 28:03thing about comic books now is but I mean it worked out in a way because our
- 28:07I was drawn to you yes but I felt bad for all the moms that walked by with their
- 28:13little wanted to buy Ariel and I've got like all this satanic stuff up yeah it
- 28:19was It was kind of interesting placement nonetheless I wanted to ask about uh
- 28:25because I I get the impression your your pro kind of physical uh comics and and
- 28:30books and whatnot um and digital stuff is kind of growing and I'm kind of I
- 28:37guess because we've just I've just moved countries and all that kind of stuff and
- 28:39so I'm very Pro digital right now because it means I can keep all my stuff
- 28:42with me when I move around and and things um how do you feel like how you
- 28:48feel about that and is there uh I mean this is kind of a a busy sort of
- 28:51question but um I've noticed that there's a trend where the digital stuff
- 28:55actually sometimes even more expensive than the physical stuff especially from
- 28:59the big publishes like yeah um for me I
- 29:03make the digital cheaper yeah see that's I mean I it seems like that's how it
- 29:09would work out you to print it but but you know well the the bigger guys don't
- 29:14have to be nice to you yeah you know they can charge you over a price for
- 29:19their books um Char convenience yes but
- 29:23but comicy has changed the has changed the game for people um I think it was uh
- 29:29Becky cloan put out like a book almost exclusively uh digitally and then turned
- 29:35around and printed it later I think yeah right and I could be wrong about that
- 29:39it's called the Meyer um I know it I know that there are physical copies
- 29:45of but uh for a while I thought it was just a digital book I know that JK
- 29:49Woodward did Behemoth for monkey brain and that is only done digitally right
- 29:55you can't get a physical copy of it so um yeah there is a there is a trend
- 30:00towards digital I'm not opposed to it I prefer a physical copy in my hand going
- 30:05forward people will be able to buy digital books from me you won't be able
- 30:09to get some of my stuff digitally like I'm never goingon to put a Tiana Bible
- 30:13up digitally right sure but um well you
- 30:18never know uh but the infernal packed you can get
- 30:23the whole series on comicy uh you can get the entire graphic no for the
- 30:28caminus black Devils um on drive-through Comics I think um I don't really make a
- 30:35cut off that so I don't promote it too hard but you can buy issues one and two
- 30:40off of comixology and I get the profits from that yeah
- 30:44cool uh and horror Babylon when it's done um so for everybody that backs the
- 30:51book you get a PDF of the book as it's produced before like every chapter when
- 30:57it's done will be sent to you now how I'm approaching this book is I'm
- 31:03drawing U sort of sporadically so page
- 31:07like 92 might get drawn before page 13
- 31:11but um my my goal is to have everybody
- 31:16get their chapters you know have my chapters done in order so that people
- 31:22can um read them one by one as they're produced uh within like a couple of
- 31:28weeks of each other right so that kind of makes it like the single issues yes
- 31:33yes and um I think and I'm not positive
- 31:39about it yet but I think when it's all said and done I will probably
- 31:43deconstruct the book um because I have these four awesome variant covers and
- 31:48I've got my own cover right the book is five chapters long so to deconstruct it
- 31:54chapter by chapter I could put those covers on it and then put them out
- 31:58digitally 1 through five so it's it's not something that I have seen anybody
- 32:03else do before you know make the whole graphic novel and then break it down
- 32:07later but um it's something I'm going to seriously consider doing and hopefully
- 32:14it'll you know gain some traction on on the the digital on the webs for people
- 32:20that really like digital comics and there are people who who won't buy my
- 32:24physical books but they will buy my my books on comixology and uh there's
- 32:29particular guy who who really likes my work but he won't buy a physical copy of
- 32:33it he's like nope read digital and I don't blame you it's it's it's one of
- 32:37these things where the um it it makes sense now people don't
- 32:43have it a ton of space and every is hooked up to the web and it just m you
- 32:49know if that's your if that's how you enjoy the reading experience also with
- 32:53with comicy they do that guided view thing yeah which is super cool because
- 32:57it goes pan panel or um or you can blow the page up and see all the artwork so
- 33:02that's kind of cool too yeah that's really handy on a phone like well I mean
- 33:06obviously it's better in General on an iPad or or something bigger but like you
- 33:10know if I was on the train stuck or something I could like keep reading it's
- 33:14cool yeah I I read the entire like Darkness series uh so I only I only own
- 33:21one issue of the the darkness and I was like oh it's okay but then I was like
- 33:26you know I I had nothing better read or something I don't know and I I ended up
- 33:30buying it I really enjoyed it and uh but a lot of lot of stuff to read yes yes
- 33:35it's a big Series so um yeah escape from Jesus Island the
- 33:42the artist who works for them who did one of my covers uh they really push the
- 33:47digital because he does everything digitally and he does all this intricate
- 33:51work um like there's little hidden stuff in every panel and so you really can't
- 33:56see it unless you buy the digital version yeah I was goingon to ask you do
- 34:00you work physically or do you work digitally like with that just in general
- 34:04I I do a mixture of both um with calamitus black Devils everything was
- 34:09drawn and but how that book was done was so bizarre like literally every panel
- 34:14was a sheet of paper so I have this stack in the corner of my house that's
- 34:19every single panel of the calam black Devils that's cool and I would scan it
- 34:24in and then I would I would rearrange it on the page and then I would uh
- 34:30digitally ink it cool wow uh with the
- 34:34infernal packed I would do these really um I I did them on traditional size
- 34:40comic book pages and then I'd scan them in I would create a black I'd paint the
- 34:46whole page black and I would um change the opacity so that I could see through
- 34:51the black and I didn't use a paintbrush instead I I
- 34:55erased oh cool panels so that's how you get the look for The Infernal packed is
- 35:00that it's right it's sort of like scratchboard that's cool yeah and and
- 35:05that takes forever so when I was done with that series I'm like I'm never doing that
- 35:11again and so now I'm I basically horor Babylon is I've come back to doing
- 35:17traditional but now my skills have vastly improved yeah right so um now I'm
- 35:24doing more traditional work um and it
- 35:27how I go into it now is um I'll either do my roughs in the computer and print
- 35:34them out and then Ruff them out again and then scan them back in and then
- 35:38digitally ink them wow or El to start to
- 35:41finish uh all on the computer okay so um
- 35:46yeah the I use a waycom tablet and I use
- 35:50Kyle's brushes um it's it's like different brush packs you can buy cool
- 35:56so and they've got some really cool ones uh but I highly recommend you know I
- 36:02it's a one-time deal you you have to buy the waycom tablet and then you you you
- 36:07can use the basic brushes that you're just given with Photoshop or whatever
- 36:11yeah um I don't have to buy paper anymore unless I'm you know what I mean
- 36:18it's when I look in that corner where there's cobwebs and the clamus black
- 36:22Devils is sitting I'm like yeah that was kind of cool and and I do commission
- 36:27work and stuff like that you know I do sketch covers and everything so I I can
- 36:30physically draw on things but digital is so much more forgiving I can go into it
- 36:35as Loose as I want not really think about it and like so I'll lay my page
- 36:40out I've got my roughs and I can walk away and come back and I can see all the
- 36:44proportions and like figure out what's screwed up with it and what's great
- 36:48about it and then fix it you know just move everything around so it's a it's a
- 36:54better product in my opinion um cool you're not Mar to whatever you put down to begin
- 37:00with so all right well uh we've taken up a bunch of your time but I want to ask
- 37:07uh before you go what is your favorite
- 37:10horror movie and why oh wow U that's a no press no
- 37:16pressure well could I do it you're asking for one but I have like oh you
- 37:22can do it you can list a few I don't think I could pick one either yeah it it goes by like
- 37:28it it goes about time periods for me you know like when the kid uh nightmare in
- 37:34Elm Street and Friday the 13th that's when I was into slasher films really you
- 37:39know and I I have this you know for a grown man I've got this big collection
- 37:43of Friday the 13th and Nightmare El Street memorabilia that I still build on
- 37:48which is a little embarrassing because my kids are like I want to play with
- 37:51that and I'm like no that's yeah we have the problem with nieces and nephews yeah
- 37:57some of us like no no those aren't toys yeah those are those are our
- 38:01figurines so that that's my that's my big collectioner and I guess if you
- 38:06wanted to ask me what what my absolute favorite horror movie was the one that
- 38:09sticks with me still today is Nightmare and Elm Street part one
- 38:13okay uh I know it sounds pretty generic but when you're a kid and you see that
- 38:18time and the the Practical effects you know when his arms stretch across the
- 38:24STS and like his space gets ripped off and like the getting diced up on the
- 38:28ceiling I mean all that stuff was just like it's crazy it's crazy and there's
- 38:33no CGI in it and that's the problem with horror movies today is like they CGI out
- 38:39of it and it it loses its spook Factor altogether you're just like if if they
- 38:44do it the Peter Jackson route you know mix the with just blood everywhere yeah
- 38:50see I would see I always say Evil Dead just because for me Evil Dead sums up
- 38:54everything that I love about horror movies is like the goofy practical
- 38:58effects and then and you mentioned Evil Dead 2 earlier I actually love Evil Dead
- 39:022 maybe more just in general just because of Evil Dead 2 for you have to
- 39:07understand like we're talking about different time periods when I discovered
- 39:10Evil Dead 2 because that was an indie film you know that that wasn't a lot of
- 39:14press I remember I I was at my grandparents house and um they had HBO
- 39:21and there it was around Halloween or something and it was playing Evil Dead
- 39:24too and I was like oh wow and um it was just like a little clip they showed and
- 39:30it was the woman's head falling into his lap while he's in
- 39:36the yeah I was like that looks like the scariest movie I've ever seen so I
- 39:41stayed up really really late and I watched I've been watch like this horror
- 39:44Marathon I think it was like Children of the Corn and like a couple other things
- 39:46and then Evil Dead 2 came on and and that like changed my world I was like
- 39:51what is this this is like the most brilliant thing I've ever seen it's
- 39:54funny it's gross it's crazy yeah it's like weird and trippy and it's awesome
- 40:00at the end when he ends up in the medieval times yeah exactly what is and
- 40:06then when Army of Darkness came out I remember seeing the movie poster and I'm
- 40:10like this is Evil Dead 3 you know I grasp the concept well they should have
- 40:16just called it Evil Dead 3 it would have done Gang Busters but Army of Darkness
- 40:20when I saw the movie poster I was like I have to go see this thing I'm like I
- 40:23finally get to figure out what happened to him when he went back when he went back
- 40:28but and I love the series that's on TV and now yeah now whatever what is it 20
- 40:3330 years later you can find out even more yeah it's great it you know Sam Ry
- 40:38and and Bruce Campbell together should just be like like a Johnny Depp and Tim
- 40:42Burton team up or something y it's just great um so yeah then there was uh then
- 40:49I went through this like phase where I was trying to watch disturbing movies
- 40:52and I like Zoo 120 days of Sodom and Antichrist in a Serbian film and then I
- 40:59was like I'm all done with those those aren't really horror movies as much as
- 41:02they no yeah no I agree I'm not I'm not into that stuff much they're more for
- 41:07the shock value I like Monsters and and a bit of bit of comedy in there and yeah
- 41:14yeah I just really like the b-grade the really cheesy ones you ever seen Knight
- 41:18of the Demons the original one is that the the demons I think her name's I
- 41:23think it's Alice is the name of the uh the evil person in that one and she
- 41:27looks like an like a sort of demonic Undead uh black bride you know she's got
- 41:34the Dario agento one that's just demons I think yeah yeah you got to see Night
- 41:37of the Demons it's it's ridiculous there's there's these really stupid
- 41:42effects in it that don't make any sense but you just well that was my my final
- 41:46question was going to be is there a favorite guilty pleasure horror movie of
- 41:50yours so maybe this counts um but or is
- 41:53there something better I think well
- 41:58oh man such tough
- 42:00questions sorry guilty horror movie
- 42:06um geez they're all kind of like I the ones that I'll tell you what the one
- 42:12that I watch the most of and it's not a guilty pleasure or anything because it's
- 42:15just badass is the thing oh yeah yeah and I would consider that a horror movie
- 42:21over a Sci-Fi philm yeah totally it's it's ridiculous John Carpenter is great
- 42:26isn't he though he's just like and I really wish he was making more
- 42:31movies uh yeah I heard he's coming back to do Halloween again which I'm super
- 42:36excited about and um and yeah Halloween is one of those where it gets play once
- 42:43a year recently I've been watch uh what was it that came out last year it
- 42:47follows I really liked oh yeah Y and then um this year it people are mixed on
- 42:53it but I thought it was super creepy was the witch um oh yeah a people went watch
- 42:59that I don't know I didn't found it a little boring it was a little dry I
- 43:03think like went thinking it was going to be like a satanic blood bath or
- 43:07something like that probably why I was expecting more yeah it it it ended up
- 43:12being like a period piece with like right yeah see I was a little disappoint
- 43:16I mean this is a spoiler sorry listeners if you haven't seen the witch close your
- 43:19ears for a second I was a little disappointed that there there was a
- 43:22witch at the end you know yeah that's right cuz I was I was actually like the
- 43:26scariest thing about that that film I thought was that like I could believe
- 43:30that this actually happened in a way like the family all turning on each
- 43:33other and stuff yeah well I mean uh the the because it did happen right but yeah
- 43:38just having a witch kind of ruined everything well it wasn't that it was
- 43:42just a witch there was multiple witches and then that right like yeah it was one
- 43:48of these things where you know I was there was no shocks in it there was no
- 43:51jump scares it wasn't gory well except for when the baby dies but uh but it it
- 43:58sets a tone right from the beginning of like yeah absolutely and then and then
- 44:02as it builds you know when she's floating up to the sky at the end of it
- 44:07you're kind of like she was [ __ ] from the beginning right yeah she never had a
- 44:12shot the devil had her and to think that like these people that you know really
- 44:19truly and honestly believe in God and you know they're God-fearing people for
- 44:23her to give up everything because she was put in such a awful situation you
- 44:28just it's got like this really Dreadful feeling to it and that's why I liked it
- 44:33okay it was more a uh it it wasn't like I saw the movie and I was like that
- 44:38movie was awesome it was like I walked up and then like 10 minutes later I was
- 44:43like man that movie was [ __ ] up yeah that's that's what I like about
- 44:47horror movies I like the ones that kind of stick with you I think using jump
- 44:50scares too much is pretty cheesy um and it's it's nothing that really gets under
- 44:56your skin later on H yeah when there was like that string
- 45:00of uh Japanese films that were being remade into American movies like The the
- 45:05ring y those first came out like I remember they got some jumps out of me
- 45:10and a actually after I saw the ring for the first time it was like I I was in a
- 45:15car with my ex-girlfriend and we're like driving to New York or something and I'm
- 45:19like it's been seven days we're still alive yeah the the first time I saw The
- 45:24Ring the you know the the sequence at the end which just comes out of the TV
- 45:27and everything like that that was like that was really cool that's great
- 45:31because you think it's over at that cuz I'd never seen that kind of yeah that
- 45:34was a new thing to me yeah and then it's very cool and The Grudge too the opening
- 45:40for The Grudge like I went to that in Time Square with a couple of my friends
- 45:45and they were like holding on to each other they're like oh my
- 45:48God is gonna be good so but yeah different time periods different loves
- 45:54different kinds of horor movies that I like um cool I I I I really like the
- 45:59stylized ones I like practical effects and I just like like super
- 46:04cheesy digital CGI ghosts they really piss me
- 46:09off you're not aan of Ghostbusters so bad I wanted to love Crimson Peak and I
- 46:15it I liked Crimson I liked Crimson Peak overall but yeah I do agree the his
- 46:21practical stuff was better so Ghostbusters is all CG is that what you
- 46:26said yeah I think so the new one yeah oh wow well I haven't seen it I don't I
- 46:31haven't either my wife went to go see it with uh she took my oldest daughter and
- 46:35I I think they really enjoyed it so oh I'm sure it will end up on our Shelf at
- 46:41home I'm sure it's perfectly fine and inoffensive it's not I don't think it's
- 46:45gonna be you know so um but yeah uh
