Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: How Can I Help When Things Feel Hard?
Transcript
- 0:22Speaker 1: Hey, everyone, Emily here you are listening to another installment
- 0:25Speaker 1: of five Minute Friday from Hurdle. Oh man, it feels
- 0:30Speaker 1: so dang good to be back in New York. Listen.
- 0:34Speaker 1: I am so grateful for the traveling. I had an
- 0:37Speaker 1: unblieable time gallivanting around Italy and France and Chicago. But man,
- 0:44Speaker 1: there is just no place like home. And it's interesting,
- 0:46Speaker 1: right because this is the first home that I've walked
- 0:49Speaker 1: back into. And trust me, like I've traveled so much
- 0:52Speaker 1: over the last few years for work, I'm used to
- 0:55Speaker 1: being away for little stints of time, but this is
- 0:58Speaker 1: the first home that I walked back in and it
- 1:00Speaker 1: just really really felt like home. And it's the best
- 1:05Speaker 1: damn feeling. Anyway, Five Minute Friday. This week I got
- 1:09Speaker 1: to talk to you about Chicago. Wow. First off, how
- 1:14Speaker 1: special was it to have the opportunity to be on
- 1:18Speaker 1: the sidelines of a major marathon for the first time
- 1:22Speaker 1: in forever? You know, it made me think about the
- 1:30Speaker 1: appreciation I have, or the opportunity that I have to
- 1:32Speaker 1: just be on the sidelines, which isn't an easy place
- 1:36Speaker 1: to get to, right, especially when you hope to be
- 1:39Speaker 1: the one that's running the course. But standing there in
- 1:42Speaker 1: community and this moment over the weekend, it was truly special.
- 1:49Speaker 1: I think I've said this on the show before, but
- 1:52Speaker 1: think about life, right, Like, when is there any other
- 1:54Speaker 1: opportunity for so many different people of different backgrounds and
- 1:58Speaker 1: political beliefs, you know, opinions to stand together and come
- 2:05Speaker 1: together for one common purpose. And the fact that this
- 2:08Speaker 1: common purpose is individuals on a quest to go after
- 2:12Speaker 1: their big potential is so special. And what an intimate
- 2:16Speaker 1: and beautiful moment and opportunity there is between the runner
- 2:20Speaker 1: and the bystander, the cheerer to like share that energy.
- 2:26Speaker 1: It's just awesome. It was interesting when I was out
- 2:29Speaker 1: there on the sidelines and I was cheering. I went
- 2:31Speaker 1: to mile twenty four and a half and I actually
- 2:34Speaker 1: wrote about this earlier this week on social media. But
- 2:36Speaker 1: if you want to see like the entire span of
- 2:39Speaker 1: every human emotion possible, go to mile twenty four and
- 2:41Speaker 1: a half, otherwise known as the forty k marker of
- 2:46Speaker 1: a marathon. Like there are happy people, there are people
- 2:49Speaker 1: that are completely depleted. There are people that are beside
- 2:53Speaker 1: themselves with sadness. There are people that are questioning literally
- 2:56Speaker 1: everything in their life. Excitement, joy like everything right, and
- 3:01Speaker 1: to be at that point over the weekend, I found
- 3:06Speaker 1: a great opportunity to serve a greater purpose. So many
- 3:11Speaker 1: of the people I know that were running that marathon,
- 3:13Speaker 1: and I think I was tracking like thirty five different runners,
- 3:15Speaker 1: but so many different runners. Some of you listening to this.
- 3:18Speaker 1: When you get to that point, as one would expect,
- 3:20Speaker 1: it is just so difficult. And I decided to start
- 3:25Speaker 1: hopping in with some of my friends, if only just
- 3:28Speaker 1: to run for a few seconds. And in those few seconds,
- 3:32Speaker 1: I would start by doing like a gut check and
- 3:34Speaker 1: asking where they're at. And not a single person that
- 3:37Speaker 1: I hopped in with like was in a good place.
- 3:39Speaker 1: Everyone like fell borderline like emotional breakdown. The race hadn't
- 3:44Speaker 1: been going as they had hoped, and I knew that
- 3:47Speaker 1: this was my chance to help them find some necessary
- 3:49Speaker 1: perspective so that they could finish off this whole thing
- 3:51Speaker 1: feeling really powerful. And so with that said, I asked
- 3:56Speaker 1: them how they were doing. You would get that expected
- 3:59Speaker 1: like this is not how I hope things would go,
- 4:02Speaker 1: And I would say the thing that I love to say,
- 4:04Speaker 1: which is that you didn't come this far to only
- 4:06Speaker 1: come this far, and right now is your opportunity to
- 4:09Speaker 1: take back the control that you have to go after
- 4:12Speaker 1: the rest of your potential because you've already done a
- 4:16Speaker 1: hell of a lot and you've just got this little
- 4:19Speaker 1: bit left to do, whether or not you're running a marathon,
- 4:24Speaker 1: whatever you've got going on. I think that that's really important, right,
- 4:27Speaker 1: is understanding that at any given moment, you have the
- 4:30Speaker 1: power to both come back to come and also grab
- 4:34Speaker 1: hold of your emotions. We all have feelings, right, and
- 4:38Speaker 1: oftentimes these feelings can feel super out of control because
- 4:40Speaker 1: that is that's what it's like to feel, But we
- 4:45Speaker 1: are in charge of how we respond and react to
- 4:48Speaker 1: those feelings. And I can't tell you how meaningful it
- 4:52Speaker 1: was to me. After the race was finished and I
- 4:54Speaker 1: jumped in with a handful of different friends and gave
- 4:57Speaker 1: them my little pep talk, they reached out to me
- 5:00Speaker 1: and they said that was the thing, that was the
- 5:03Speaker 1: thing that I needed to hear, even after what I
- 5:06Speaker 1: didn't want, I had to be reminded that I am
- 5:11Speaker 1: in control. So a little special moment that I exchanged
- 5:16Speaker 1: with them, a really special moment to be there over
- 5:18Speaker 1: the weekend, and man, this comes out on Friday. I'm
- 5:22Speaker 1: gonna be running a decent jungle miles on Saturday, hoping
- 5:25Speaker 1: to see what happens with me, how it feels, make
- 5:28Speaker 1: some decisions about what I may or may not do
- 5:30Speaker 1: in New York. And so just remember that right you
- 5:36Speaker 1: are in charge of how you respond to your feelings.
- 5:40Speaker 1: My prompter you this week what is one way you
- 5:43Speaker 1: can uplift someone in your life? Again, what is one
- 5:47Speaker 1: way that you can uplift someone that you care about
- 5:50Speaker 1: in your life? Maybe this weekend. Now a listener question.
- 5:58Speaker 2: Hi, Emily, this is Shelly. I live in I'm a
- 6:00Speaker 2: big fan of your podcasts, and my question for you
- 6:03Speaker 2: is around running two marathons close together. I ran Boston
- 6:07Speaker 2: on Monday, It's a great day, and I'll be running
- 6:10Speaker 2: New York on November seventh. And I've never attempted to
- 6:14Speaker 2: run two marathons this close together. So just wondering if
- 6:17Speaker 2: you have any tips or recommendations on recovery versus maintaining
- 6:21Speaker 2: fitness for the next few weeks. Thanks so much, Shelly.
- 6:26Speaker 1: Congrats on Boston. That's so awesome. This tugs at my
- 6:30Speaker 1: heart strings. Okay, although I would not recommend necessarily that
- 6:33Speaker 1: people do back to back marathons, if you have been
- 6:36Speaker 1: listening to the show before, then you know that I
- 6:38Speaker 1: too have done this crazy thing once, because I am
- 6:41Speaker 1: truly just that a little bit out of my mind.
- 6:43Speaker 1: I once ran the Dublin and New York marathons back
- 6:47Speaker 1: to back within a six day period. It was a
- 6:51Speaker 1: truly crazy experience. I wrote about it in Runner's World
- 6:54Speaker 1: on linked to that article in the show notes here.
- 6:56Speaker 1: But so all this to say, I have a soft
- 6:59Speaker 1: spot for you, my friend. My tips and tricks for
- 7:04Speaker 1: doing them back to back. I don't think that these
- 7:05Speaker 1: are tips and tricks that anyone, really many people are
- 7:08Speaker 1: going to put into practice. But most importantly is listen
- 7:11Speaker 1: to your body as they say that quote. I think
- 7:13Speaker 1: it's the hay is in the barn, like you've already
- 7:16Speaker 1: done the work and you should not be racing back
- 7:19Speaker 1: to back marathons. So when I did my back to back,
- 7:23Speaker 1: I raced, so to speak, Dublin and I went on
- 7:26Speaker 1: what I called at the time, but I know it's
- 7:29Speaker 1: a bigger effort what I called a fun run in
- 7:31Speaker 1: New York. So I didn't think for a second about
- 7:34Speaker 1: pace in New York. Six days after running Dublin. All
- 7:37Speaker 1: I did was think about having a good time. I
- 7:40Speaker 1: ran it with a friend. We took selfies everywhere, I
- 7:43Speaker 1: hugged people everywhere, and that's just what it was. So
- 7:47Speaker 1: all this to say, take time right now to recover
- 7:50Speaker 1: and give your body really what it needs and listen,
- 7:52Speaker 1: there was absolutely no need, aside from some base mileage,
- 7:57Speaker 1: for you to be going and out and tackling easy
- 8:00Speaker 1: interval workouts are really like doing tons and tons of load. Rather,
- 8:06Speaker 1: make sure that you get in and talk to a pt,
- 8:08Speaker 1: address any issues that you may be facing. Make sure
- 8:10Speaker 1: that you're taking time beyond just like you know, non
- 8:14Speaker 1: active recovery, to maybe integrate some more cross training into
- 8:17Speaker 1: your routine and just keep your body moving, because that's
- 8:20Speaker 1: really what's important here, is just making sure that you're
- 8:22Speaker 1: keeping up that aerobic activity so that you feel comfortable
- 8:26Speaker 1: in your body when you tow the starting line in
- 8:29Speaker 1: New York again. Back to back marathons not something necessarily
- 8:33Speaker 1: recommend for everyone at all, And if that is something
- 8:36Speaker 1: that you're interested in pursuing, I definitely definitely would recommend
- 8:40Speaker 1: that you reach out to an expert, like a physical
- 8:42Speaker 1: therapist like our run coach, to talk about your goals
- 8:44Speaker 1: and get a plan specific to you so that you
- 8:48Speaker 1: can take care of you and your body. Who that's it.
- 8:54Speaker 1: Big weekend on deck, y'all, keep your fingers crossed for me.
- 8:57Speaker 1: I'm hoping. I don't know. I'm just open. I f
