- 0:03From the unexplained to the mundane, come join
- 0:06us on a journey to the fringe. Hello and welcome!
- 0:13two journey to the fringe work you guys need
- 0:16to know sometimes it is passion that fuels every
- 0:18time pretty much it's passion that fuels this
- 0:21podcast but every now and then it's something
- 0:24that needs to be covered by this podcast and
- 0:26it gets put right front and center yeah for an
- 0:29episode that we need to do i told chelsea about
- 0:3236 hours ago this is the episode i am doing and
- 0:35i'm starting the script and by gosh i got this
- 0:38script it is ready to go and i am so excited
- 0:41for this But I'm interested to see where this
- 0:45is gonna go. I have no idea like I can't even
- 0:48guess well I'm gonna start it off Chelsea I was
- 0:50reading the book and I came across this quote
- 0:53most Bigfoot witnesses if genitalia is knows
- 0:57it all report males and reading this I was suddenly
- 1:01struck with inspiration Chelsea How have we not
- 1:06done cryptid genitals as an episode? I don't
- 1:10know how you're even gonna do this as an episode,
- 1:12but I'm excited. I am staring at 12 pages of
- 1:18script right now. And the second half is gonna
- 1:22throw you for a loop that you had no idea. I'm
- 1:25already intrigued by your opening quote, because
- 1:29most are males, hey? Yep, I'm gonna get into
- 1:32some of that too, yes. Before you start, are
- 1:35we going to be that podcast that specializes
- 1:38in cryptid genitalia? You know what? I don't
- 1:42actually think it's out there from what I was
- 1:44able to gather in my research for this episode.
- 1:48So we actually are likely. And I think this goes
- 1:51as far back as our first Mothman episode or Mothperson
- 1:54episode that we have really. and interest yeah
- 1:58that genitalia is not noticed or talked about
- 2:03enough in these things for everything being gendered
- 2:06in the freaking cryptid world yeah in the then
- 2:09the weird fringe This is incredible. So if you
- 2:12see us in the future, it might be with cryptogenitalia
- 2:17specialists sprawled under our image. You know
- 2:19what? If I ever end up on a documentary, I really
- 2:22hope they at least discuss how it's going to
- 2:24be in there. But it is likely why we're on there.
- 2:27Yeah, I need a name tag with this on it. OK,
- 2:30OK. I'm too excited now. I'm gonna add it to
- 2:34the list. Now, since the dawn of time, humanity
- 2:35has always been talking about strange things
- 2:38in genitals. Some of the first art we have dates
- 2:41back 42 ,000 years and is dick shaped. And the
- 2:44oldest known cave paintings featuring vulva representations
- 2:48are from the Chauvet, Pont d 'Arc cave in France
- 2:51dating back approximately 40 ,000 years. So of
- 2:54course... If we are seeing weird stuff, someone
- 2:57has to be seeing their genitals. Yeah. And at
- 3:01this point from doing the research, I have to
- 3:04call a few people out. The BFRO, Lon Strickler,
- 3:07nothing comes back on your webpages when you
- 3:10search penis on the page or genitals. And I find
- 3:13that just clearly incorrect. You have to ask
- 3:16if you're being any sort of good reporter, I
- 3:19would think. And did you see? the genitals yeah
- 3:24it has to be something that's talked about and
- 3:26it clearly is at some point but it's so brief
- 3:30and such a taboo topic that it gets skipped over
- 3:33a lot and even hammerson peters your research
- 3:36here is lacking i can't tell you at this point
- 3:39but there's glaring omissions in this realm on
- 3:42your website and it seems pretty probable you're
- 3:44avoiding the topic based on what i know you know
- 3:47you think this will be apparent by the end okay
- 3:52That's surprising. I know this feels like a joke
- 3:55and it will definitely be played up as such at
- 3:57parts in this episode But this is just a discussion
- 4:01of a part of the body and if you want to catalog
- 4:04a phenomenon You can't just avoid veiny genitals
- 4:07that are swinging right in front of you Now,
- 4:11without much more, let's just dive headfirst
- 4:14into this. And Chelsea, of course, we got to
- 4:17start with the most obvious and famous genitals
- 4:20in the fringe community, and that is Patty. Yes,
- 4:23that's the first one that came to mind when you
- 4:25said mostly males because Patty is supposed to
- 4:27be a female. Yes. And that's actually what we're
- 4:30going to be talking about. Now, I'm sure people
- 4:32know of the Patterson Gimlin footage, but I still
- 4:35have to go over a bit just because a good idea.
- 4:37I think it's only vaguely come up in a few episodes
- 4:40before. Now Roger Patterson developed a fascination
- 4:43with Bigfoot after reading Ivan T. Sanderson's
- 4:461959 True magazine article and later Sanderson's
- 4:491961 book, Abominable Snowmen, Legends Come to
- 4:52Life. Patterson began visiting Bluff Creek, California
- 4:54in the early 1960s, where reports of large footprint
- 4:57had stirred a local interest. By 1964, he had
- 5:00seen fresh tracks himself, which deepened his
- 5:03conviction that the creature was real. And in
- 5:05October of 1967, Patterson and his friend Bob
- 5:08Ginlin set out on horseback along Bluff Creek,
- 5:11a tributary to the Klamath River in Northern
- 5:15California, hoping to find evidence of Bigfoot.
- 5:18On October 20th, they encountered a large, hair
- 5:20-covered figure walking upright near the creek.
- 5:23Patterson quickly dismounted and filmed the creature,
- 5:25later nicknamed Patty, as it moved away from
- 5:28them. The resulting 59 -second footage became
- 5:30the most famous alleged Bigfoot sighting in history.
- 5:34Afterwards, the film was shown to the media and
- 5:35researchers, sparking decades of debate, supporters
- 5:38pointed to the creature's gait and proportions
- 5:40as non -human, while skeptics argued it was a
- 5:42man in a costume despite numerous analyses. Despite
- 5:45numerous analyses and alleged confessions of
- 5:48hoaxers, which there's way more than could potentially
- 5:50be involved in, funnily enough, the film remains
- 5:53a cultural touchstone in cryptozoology. Now there
- 5:56is dispute over the authenticity of this video,
- 5:58but what isn't disputed is that if it is an actual
- 6:01Bigfoot in the Patterson -Ginlin film, and what
- 6:04we are seeing is Patty's boobs clearly on as
- 6:06she majestically walks away from the camera as
- 6:09if filming Bigfoot Baywatch in the opposite direction.
- 6:12That's actually all I got on that one because
- 6:14it's clear. You can go watch it. That video is
- 6:16fully available. Yeah, and I always thought that
- 6:18that was such a funny, if you want to say funny,
- 6:21an interesting part of the video is why would
- 6:25you make her female of all things? Yeah, it makes
- 6:28it harder. think of bigfoot they think a male
- 6:32yeah it's kind of like all dogs are boys all
- 6:35bigfoots are boys too Like that. So I always
- 6:41thought it was a funny detail, because where
- 6:43else do you see, one, genitals mentioned? Not
- 6:46that they're mentioned, they're just out there
- 6:49on the patterns. Why would you actually think
- 6:52of, like, including that, too? Exactly! Including
- 6:54that as a detail. I just always found it, like,
- 6:57a super interesting detail that she was female.
- 7:00It is just, like, a clear display. Like, the
- 7:02reason I end it there is, one, because you've
- 7:04probably seen the footage and you can see very
- 7:06clearly breasts. Yeah. But weirdly enough, one
- 7:09of the lesser talking points of the whole footage
- 7:12too. Yeah, that's true. I don't know unless you've
- 7:14like listened to a lot of research about it that
- 7:18that would come up just if you've heard about
- 7:20it in passing. Yeah. Next up is another Bigfoot
- 7:24footage I had never heard of before. It's called
- 7:26the Redwood Incident. Is there footage of this?
- 7:29Yes, I have it actually. We're going to watch
- 7:31it once I read this. If this is on this episode,
- 7:32I'm going to go out on a limb and say no. Okay.
- 7:35And actually there's weird parts that kind of
- 7:38worked into this with as I read the story, but
- 7:41is pure coincidence. Okay. In 1995, an alleged
- 7:45Bigfoot was filmed from a vehicle in Jedidiah
- 7:48Smith Redwoods State Park, California, and what
- 7:51appears to be a slender, tapering, mobile sickle
- 7:54-shaped penis flexes upwards during the footage.
- 7:56Some writers have even interpreted this as a
- 7:59possible threat display. The piece of footage
- 8:01is known generally as the Redwoods footage, but
- 8:04the fact that it was filmed by a crew working
- 8:06the Playboy company who was filming a playmate
- 8:09at the time. Hence it's often called the Playboy
- 8:11footage too. It hasn't exactly helped its credibility
- 8:14but Chelsea we're gonna watch this film really
- 8:16quick. It's on YouTube so it's not like that
- 8:19bad. I watched it I can't really see what they're
- 8:24talking about but apparently when people watching
- 8:26it say that's what you're seeing. I can't tell
- 8:29what's going on but oh yeah sorry right there.
- 8:33No I don't. No, I missed it that time. Sorry.
- 8:36Right there. Oh, was that a wiener? Yeah, it's
- 8:40dangling. Right there. Did you see it? There
- 8:45it is. I didn't see that. Sorry, I didn't actually
- 8:49see that the first time through. Okay. Yeah.
- 8:54Well, um, I have no comment. I don't know what
- 8:57to say about that. You can't even tell what that
- 9:00is There's no like a wiener. That's the only
- 9:04thing you can see it's very thin Okay, so this
- 9:10is supposed to be bigfoot that's literally you
- 9:12can't even see a bigfoot on there No, and that's
- 9:14that whole thing. It is supposed to be a bigfoot.
- 9:16It was filmed by people from playboy So that's
- 9:19always interesting. That is always interesting.
- 9:21Yeah almost in every case Now next up is a man
- 9:29who claims to have been abducted. by Bigfoot.
- 9:32Albert Ostman in 1924, he's a Canadian prospector
- 9:36who was camping near Toba Inlet, British Columbia.
- 9:39Where does this encounter come from? It's a famous
- 9:42one. I believe there was a Wikipedia article
- 9:44on this one. OK, OK, I thought it was like someone
- 9:46specific. But it's from 1924. So I think there
- 9:49were newspaper articles at the time about this.
- 9:52I'm just curious because you're calling everyone
- 9:54out on how horrible their genitalia research
- 9:57is. Yeah, true enough. Actually the one guy I
- 10:02did find who actually had a sufficient article
- 10:04on this his name was What's tetsu .com is the
- 10:09website and who wrote this? T E T Z O O Oh, okay.
- 10:14And the person who wrote this is... Who wrote
- 10:17you? I can't find who wrote this. Anyhow, it
- 10:19gave me a bit of help with this. Okay. Albert
- 10:22Ostman, Toba Inlet, British Columbia, while searching
- 10:24for a rumored goldmine, he claimed to have heard
- 10:27local stories about wild men in the area, but
- 10:29didn't take them seriously. One night, Ostman
- 10:32said he was sleeping in a sleeping bag when something
- 10:34lifted him up and carried him away, still inside
- 10:36the bag for several hours. When he was finally
- 10:39dumped out, he found himself in a small mountain
- 10:41basin surrounded by four hairy human -like creatures,
- 10:44true adults, male and female. and two younger
- 10:46ones. Osman described being held captive for
- 10:49six days and the creatures didn't harm him but
- 10:51prevented him from leaving. He observed their
- 10:53behavior closely. The male was large and muscular,
- 10:55around eight feet tall. The female was smaller,
- 10:58seemed to gather the food. They ate roots, nuts,
- 11:00and sweet grass. Communication was limited to
- 11:02grunts and gestures. Osman believed that they
- 11:04were curious about him but not violent, almost
- 11:07treating him as an oddity. He eventually escaped
- 11:09by tricking the male Sasquatch with a pouch of
- 11:12snuff tobacco and the creature tasted it, became
- 11:14sick, and and Ostman seized the chance to flee
- 11:17down the mountainside until you reach civilization.
- 11:20Ostman kept the story secret for decades, fearing
- 11:22ridicule. He finally told it publicly in 1957
- 11:25when Bigfoot interest surged after the Jerry
- 11:28Crew Bluff Creek footprint discovery. I'm sure
- 11:32we've done something about that in the past.
- 11:34His account was recorded by journalist John Green
- 11:36and researcher Rene DeHinden, who found Ostman
- 11:39sincere, but couldn't verify the story. Now,
- 11:41while this is all going on, he describes because
- 11:44he was living with them. He saw the larger male's
- 11:47penis, and he described it as short, about two
- 11:50inches long, and hooded with skin. Or, according
- 11:52to researcher John Green, following his communications
- 11:54with Ostman, like an inverted funnel, which sounds
- 11:57horse -like. Wow. That's the most detail we've
- 12:01ever heard about Bigfoot's penis. That's incredible.
- 12:04I've never heard that before. Next up, and this
- 12:07one comes right from the book, Where the Footprints
- 12:10End, Chelsea, and it will come up in another
- 12:11episode I'm planning in the near future. in actual
- 12:15details about the genitalia? Like some. Like
- 12:20I said, that first quote I had that put me down
- 12:22this path came from I didn't say it came from
- 12:25him, but it came from Where the Footprints End
- 12:27Volume 2. It's a good book. And I wouldn't say
- 12:30like there's an overwhelming a lot of like chapters
- 12:34that are just like Bigfoot sightings. Yeah. Like
- 12:37it jumps around all over the place. I wouldn't
- 12:40expect it to be in every part in the book, honestly,
- 12:42because there's so much information in the book.
- 12:46And I don't have a date range for this, but he
- 12:48has this sighting in here. I'm sorry, anybody
- 12:50who's caring. This comes from the book Where
- 12:52the Footprints End, High Strangers and the Bigfoot
- 12:55Phenomenon, volume two, written by Joshua Kutchin
- 12:58and Timothy Renner. They're good reads. They're
- 13:00really good reads. They're great reads. And I
- 13:03think we're gonna have many episodes from them
- 13:04in the future. And you can't just read part one
- 13:07without part two, by the way. No, they came out
- 13:09at the same time. It's actually a weird system,
- 13:11but whatever. Claire, on a business trip to America
- 13:14from the United Kingdom, had some spare time
- 13:16to sightsee near Camel, California. While there,
- 13:19she followed a coastal path to a cove area with
- 13:21the intent of photographing sea otters. She was
- 13:24sitting on some rocks near the beach taking photographs
- 13:26when she began feeling frightened and cold, her
- 13:28hair on her neck standing up. Looking to the
- 13:30other side of the cove, she saw what she assumed
- 13:32was a group of large cats, but soon realized
- 13:34they were too bulky to be felines. According
- 13:36to Claire, they came from the promontory, have
- 13:39never seen anything like it in my life, very
- 13:41very large, very hairy, moving on all fours.
- 13:44There were several of these creatures. One behind
- 13:46the other. It obviously wasn't a cat because
- 13:49it was moving in a very strange manner. The head
- 13:51kept popping up as if it was sniffing and then
- 13:54it popped up. It stood up on two feet. It was
- 13:56bipedal. It must have been seven to eight feet
- 13:58tall. It was followed into this cove by two others,
- 14:01maybe five to six feet, maybe six and a half
- 14:04foot and three much smaller ones. Claire watched
- 14:07a male, the largest of the creatures, wade into
- 14:09the ocean. The two six and a half foot tall creatures,
- 14:11females, and the three smallest creatures sat
- 14:13on the beach. The large male was tearing out
- 14:15seaweed and throwing it to the female creatures.
- 14:18Claire observed the females chewing at the root
- 14:19of the seaweed, rubbing it on their chests, and
- 14:22then draping the seaweed over their shoulders.
- 14:24Claire observed the group of Bigfoot for a time
- 14:26stunned at the size of the creature. She reached
- 14:29for a camera intent on getting a shot of the
- 14:31amazing scene when part of her lens kit fell
- 14:33and hit the rocks. The sound caused the creatures
- 14:35to turn their heads and stare at Claire, suddenly
- 14:37aware of her presence. The male waited the water,
- 14:41moving towards Claire. Quote from her. I have
- 14:43never seen anything move like that in my life.
- 14:45It looked almost as if it was gliding across
- 14:48the beach." End quote. One of the two female
- 14:50creatures followed the large male. The two Bigfoot
- 14:52seemed to have an argument. Quote, they were
- 14:54screaming each other in gibberish. End quote,
- 14:57Claire recalled. The male turned back towards
- 14:59Claire, let out a boweling howl, and pounded
- 15:01its fist in the sand. Quote, the last thing I
- 15:04remember I was feeling incredibly sick was the
- 15:06thing. Mouth wide open, big pink mouth. It was
- 15:09obviously male. It had an erection and it was
- 15:11urinating. And that is all I remember in quotes.
- 15:16Claire presumed she passed out at that point.
- 15:19She were getting consciousness about 20 yards
- 15:21from her car with her jacket pulled around her
- 15:23head, black and blue with bruises on her left
- 15:26side and bad scratches on her face. The creature
- 15:28had presumably dragged her back to her vehicle.
- 15:31Her camera and camera bag were missing. Claire
- 15:33returned to her hotel in a daze and assuming
- 15:35she had been the victim of an assault, hotel
- 15:37employees sat her in a private room and called
- 15:39the police. See, like to me you just can't make
- 15:42something like that up. It would be an odd thing
- 15:45to add. Wouldn't it? Like, a lot of that. Like,
- 15:47if you're trying to make your story sound credible,
- 15:49that just seems like a weird addition. I agree
- 15:52with that. These are incredible sightings. I
- 15:54really gotta say, what an excellent collection
- 15:56you've got here. If you're going to fake it,
- 15:59you pick one, erect or urinate, and you don't
- 16:03pick both. It's true. Like we've said, most sightings
- 16:10are of males, but that doesn't mean that's the
- 16:13only genitals we're seeing. I know we did Patty
- 16:15before, I had to start that off because that's
- 16:17the most famous, but there are female genital
- 16:20sightings for Bigfoot as well. In November of
- 16:221968, hunter John Thomas is said to have encountered
- 16:25two Bigfoot sleeping out in the open. They were
- 16:28in the posture that curiously enough had been
- 16:30described on several occasions by witnesses,
- 16:32that is, limbs partially folded beneath the body
- 16:34and the back facing upwards. Anyway... One of
- 16:37these animals had breasts in addition to a swelling
- 16:40in its genital region that kept rubbing. Without
- 16:43more information, it's difficult to know the
- 16:44story here. Presumably, we're talking about a
- 16:47modest swelling of the sort seen in various primates
- 16:49and not the pronounced striking structure seen
- 16:51in chimps, bonobos, and various monkeys. Interesting
- 16:54addition there. I wouldn't know the difference,
- 16:57to be honest with you. I probably wouldn't have
- 17:00noticed a swelling. Yeah, fair. I don't know.
- 17:02I can't tell you. I've never seen this, so maybe
- 17:05I would notice a swelling. That's the whole thing
- 17:08like they just describe it as swelling so it's
- 17:10hard to say like what they mean by that Yeah,
- 17:13yeah, but this guy says it could be a different
- 17:15type of swelling for a different primate Yeah,
- 17:17different apes have different swelling that happens
- 17:20in the genital region Okay Now a second case
- 17:23actually has to do with what's considered a Bigfoot
- 17:26butt print left in sandy soil in Walla Walla,
- 17:29Washington Where they're nuts the print was cast
- 17:31by Paul Freeman an individual with a controversial
- 17:34track record in the world of Bigfoot evidence
- 17:36shall we say and passed to Jeff Meldrum who described
- 17:39it in his 2006 book the print revealed well demarcated
- 17:42muscular buttocks but also what appears to be
- 17:44the suggestion of a labia with a bit of imagination
- 17:47they look from the cast of the impression to
- 17:49be quite similar in form or proportion to those
- 17:52of a human Wow with the bit of imagination I
- 17:55love these guys I would love a copy of this butt
- 17:59print I did not know it existed until I went
- 18:01looking for genital what are those things there's
- 18:04apparently a lot of Bigfoot evidence out there
- 18:06that just like we don't know because nobody wants
- 18:09to talk about it but we do so thank you for being
- 18:13here with us this very interesting topic and
- 18:19we're the specialists on the forefront of this
- 18:22research self -proclaimed that ends it here for
- 18:25my actual like citing parts I found a very unique
- 18:30Bigfoot variant that exists in the world, and
- 18:33it's called a box. B -O -Q -S. Have you ever
- 18:36heard of this, Chelsea? No. Should I Google Bigfoot
- 18:39box? No, there's no pictures out there, it's
- 18:41not gonna help you in any way, and it is fairly
- 18:44obscure. But it's your neck of the woods. It's
- 18:47a hairy humanoid told in legends of North America
- 18:49tribes such as the Nuxuk, the Chinook, and the
- 18:51Salish peoples in the Pacific Northwest. The
- 18:54attitude of mingled hope and fear with which
- 18:57the Belakula regard their supernatural anthropomorphic
- 19:00beings is typical of their thoughts and actions
- 19:02concerning zoomorphic creatures as well. In the
- 19:05supernatural world, the dividing line between
- 19:07humans and animals' beings is not clearly defined.
- 19:09mind. Fabulous creatures have the mentality of
- 19:11supermen and can be appeased, besought or cajoled
- 19:14precisely as are anthropomorphic beings. Like
- 19:17those in human form, supernatural animals can
- 19:19bestow good or evil on human beings with whom
- 19:22they come into contact. The box somewhat resembles
- 19:24a man. Its hands especially in the regions around
- 19:27the eyes being distinctly human. It walks on
- 19:29its hind legs, in a stooping posture, its long
- 19:31arms swinging below the knees. In height is rather
- 19:34less than the average man. the entire body except
- 19:37the face is covered with long hair and the growth
- 19:39being most profuse on the chest which is large
- 19:42corresponding to this great strength of the animal
- 19:45the most peculiar feature of the animal is its
- 19:48penis which is so long that it must be rolled
- 19:52up and carried in the arms when the creature
- 19:55is walking. It terrifies its enemies by striking
- 19:59tree trunks and breaking branches with its uncoiled
- 20:03organ. It is said that a woman was once drawing
- 20:06water at the edge of the stream when a box concealed
- 20:09on shore extended its penis under the water to
- 20:13the further bank and held intercourse with her.
- 20:16The contact rendered her powerless as if turned
- 20:19to stone. She could neither flee nor remove the
- 20:22organ, her companion tried to unsuccessfully
- 20:25cut the organ until one of them brought a Salaberry
- 20:28leaf, whereupon the monster, dreading its razor
- 20:31-like edge, withdrew. The following stories illustrate
- 20:34better than any other description the attitude
- 20:37of the Belakula towards these animals. Not many
- 20:40years ago, a certain Cackless was encamped with
- 20:43his wife and child in the Bay of the Thousand
- 20:45Islands, Altaqualc Luxus, and I do apologize
- 20:48for my pronunciation of this stuff. About two
- 20:50miles above Namu. One of the haunts of the box.
- 20:53He heard a number of the creatures in the forest
- 20:55behind him and seized his gun at the same time
- 20:57calling out to them to go away. Instead of breaking
- 20:59the branches and beating upon tree trunks came
- 21:02nearer. So, you know, that's the penis right
- 21:05there. Becoming alarmed he called out once more
- 21:10go away, or you shall feel my power They still
- 21:13approach and the cackles fired in the direction
- 21:15of the sounds there followed a wild commotion
- 21:18in the forest roars grunts poundings and the
- 21:21breaking of branches Oh, man. I'm sorry just
- 21:24when they're making these descriptions of everything
- 21:26going on keep in mind that it's penis related
- 21:38The hunter, now thoroughly alarmed, told his
- 21:40wife and child to embark in the canoe while he
- 21:42covered their retreat with his gun. He followed
- 21:44them without molestation and anchored his craft
- 21:47not far from the shore. The box could be heard
- 21:49plainly as they rushed to and fro on the beach,
- 21:51but only the vague outlines of their form were
- 21:53visible in the darkness. Presently, though there
- 21:56was no wind, the canoe began to roll as if in
- 21:59a heavy sea. Cackless decided to flee to the
- 22:01Restoration Bay, but before he had gone far,
- 22:04his paddle struck bottom, although he was in
- 22:06mid -channel. Looking up, he saw that the mountains
- 22:09were higher than the usual. The box had, by their
- 22:11supernatural power, raised the whole area so
- 22:13that the water had been almost entirely drained
- 22:15away. They are the only supernatural beings with
- 22:18this power. Cackless jumped overboard in the
- 22:20water, which reached only to his knees, and towed
- 22:23his canoe to Restoration Bay. following him along
- 22:26the shore. This is not the only occasion on which
- 22:28box have appeared near Restoration Bay. Within
- 22:30the lifetime of the father of an informant, a
- 22:33chief set out with some friends from Quat 'n
- 22:35have bound for Namu. They traveled overland to
- 22:37the Restoration Bay, thence by canoe, making
- 22:40the journey without incident. When returning,
- 22:42they decided to gather clams on the rocky point
- 22:44of the bay. As the craft shot around the tip
- 22:46of the promontory, they saw a box gathering shellfish.
- 22:49The paddlers backed their canoes behind some
- 22:52rocks once they could watch without being seen.
- 22:55The creature acted as if frightened. It kept
- 22:57looking backwards and then hurriedly scraped
- 22:59up some clams with its pawpaws. Well that's good
- 23:02they don't hunt with the penis. Dash off with
- 23:05these into the forest. and came back for more.
- 23:08The chief decided to attack the animal. A frontal
- 23:10approach was impossible, owing to the lack of
- 23:12cover, so he landed and crept stealthily through
- 23:14the forest, armed with his Hudson's Bay Company's
- 23:16musket. Presently, he stumbled upon a heap of
- 23:19clams which the animal had collected. He waited
- 23:20until it returned with another load, and then
- 23:22raised his musket and fired. Instead of killing
- 23:24the box, its supernatural power was so great
- 23:27that the hunter's musket burst in his hand, though
- 23:29he himself was not injured. The box shrieked
- 23:31and whistled as if in anger, and at once, hordes
- 23:33of his mates came dashing out through the forest.
- 23:36The frightened chief rushed out on the beach
- 23:38and called to his comrades to save him. They
- 23:40brought the canoe close to the shore so that
- 23:41he could clamber aboard, and they paddled away
- 23:44unharmed. The Belakula believed that the box,
- 23:46unlike most supernatural animals, have not abandoned
- 23:48the country since the coming of the white man.
- 23:51One man was most insistent. that they lived on
- 23:53King Island and promised to point one out if
- 23:55a visit were made to that spot. The man refuses
- 23:58to camp on the place where he affirmed Boxer
- 24:00Common. Another informant stated that though
- 24:03he had never seen one of the monsters, a horde
- 24:05of them surrounded his camp near Canoe Crossing
- 24:07for a week. Every night he heard them roaring
- 24:09and beating on trees and branches. A curious
- 24:13blending of old and new beliefs was accorded
- 24:16in connection with the statement. This man remarked
- 24:18that once he was gathering firewood when he heard
- 24:20the creatures closing in on him. His head swam
- 24:23with terror until he remembered he was a Christian.
- 24:25He called to Jesus to help him, grasped his axe,
- 24:28and dashed towards the place from which the loudest
- 24:30sounds were coming. He heard the animals moving
- 24:32off all around him but failed to see any of them.
- 24:34Vox have been heard as recently as 1924 according
- 24:37to popular belief. In January of that year a
- 24:40number of young bellicula were returning home
- 24:42in a motorboat from Ocean Falls and they camped
- 24:45for the night on Burke Channel. They were alarmed
- 24:47to hear a crashing of bushes and a beating of
- 24:50tree trunks, thoroughly frightened, they directed
- 24:52the beams of several electric torches in that
- 24:55direction of the sound, without a veil, and at
- 24:57last started the engine of their motor, and the
- 24:59noises of which frightened the animals away.
- 25:01Now these accounts came from the field notes
- 25:03of Franz Boas and George Hunt, two of the most
- 25:05influential ethnographers to ever work in the
- 25:08Pacific Northwest. They were documenting the
- 25:10world as the Nuxilch and their neighbors understood
- 25:13it. The stories people told, the beings they
- 25:15believed, lived in the forests and rivers and
- 25:17the experiences their elders Tucked into this
- 25:20notebook, sometimes as a quick line, sometimes
- 25:22as longer recollections, are descriptions of
- 25:24wild, hairy figures that later scholars grouped
- 25:26under the name of the box. What stands out is
- 25:28how consistent the details are. Tall, human -shaped,
- 25:30long -armed, skittish, and one very clear feature
- 25:33is genitals so long they had to be carried, coiled,
- 25:36or held out of the way. This isn't meant as a
- 25:40joke for the tradition either. In these traditions,
- 25:43exaggerated anatomy is a way of marking something
- 25:45as not human. It's a visual cue. The same way
- 25:49that you describe a creature with glowing eyes
- 25:51or backwards feet. The detail explains how the
- 25:53beings move, why it runs awkwardly. It's simply
- 25:56part of what made this creature. Interesting
- 25:58insight. And it makes me think back to all reports
- 26:02of like tree knocking and stuff with Bigfoot.
- 26:05Nobody's witnessed it. We don't know what they're
- 26:08knocking on the trees or houses with. It brings
- 26:11a whole new meaning to that. And if somebody
- 26:13did notice, are they actually going to say it?
- 26:16That's true. I mean, you've already seen a Bigfoot,
- 26:19do you want to say it's knocking on trees with
- 26:21its penis? With its massive lasso -like penis?
- 26:24It was massive. It was actually over his shoulder
- 26:27and then he was knocking on the tree with it.
- 26:31Actually, when they're saying that these things
- 26:32are like knocking things over or making marks
- 26:34so high that it seems impossible. We got the
- 26:37answer here. It might have 10 extra feet of length
- 26:41to work with. This had never occurred to me that
- 26:44that's what it could be. It's wild. And it is
- 26:47it does bring a whole new supernatural element
- 26:50to it. I've never heard that take on it. That's
- 26:53interesting. That's the part where I have to
- 26:55call out Hammerson Peters on. because he has
- 26:58to have come by the story at some point. And
- 27:01he just didn't want to share it. He does a ton
- 27:03of work in this part of the world, and I could
- 27:06find nothing. Sorry, I found two references to
- 27:08genitals or penis on his website, neither of
- 27:11which was the story. They were very brief. And
- 27:14they had to do with like Christian beliefs and
- 27:17a giant somewhere, but they weren't that important
- 27:20to include here. But yeah, I'm going to keep
- 27:22it there. Oh, you're going to have a follow up.
- 27:25I feel like I might have a follow up in the future
- 27:27as I could get this together in 36 hours. What
- 27:30can I do with a bit more prep time? Hold on.
- 27:33I'm going to share my screen. This is the ass
- 27:36print. Oh. Huh. It looks particularly hairy.
- 27:40It does. What was it sitting on? Where is the
- 27:43ass print? This seems to be a cheek. Chelsea,
- 27:45did you know before this episode there was an
- 27:47ass print? I had no idea. I honestly want to
- 27:50get it tattooed. On your ass. Right over my ass.
- 27:58It's beautiful. I just had to share this with
- 28:03you. What I'm left with is that there is clearly
- 28:07more out there like this is just a brief Bigfoot
- 28:10episode put together fairly quickly on their
- 28:13genitals and There has to be more out there because
- 28:17you can find Mention that it's mostly males that
- 28:20are seen which leads people to believe that's
- 28:23being referenced more than what I just said because
- 28:26you couldn't gather They're mostly male from
- 28:28like five sighting But me and you both know that
- 28:31it's not out there though. We have had it come
- 28:33up in a sighting I think it's been one because
- 28:36we both freaked out over it and we're so happy
- 28:39that somebody and I can't remember What episode
- 28:42it was in it was a recent one. It was this year.
- 28:44It was this season Oh, it was one of the Mothman
- 28:47wasn't it? Was it Mothman? It could have been
- 28:49could have been a Mothman could have been crawler
- 28:52Was it crawler could have been a crawler? Let's
- 28:55not speculate too much. Yeah, but in the end
- 28:57this is a very important part of the whole story
- 29:01that is just neglected and I'm glad I could shine
- 29:04some light on a neglected part of this world.
- 29:07I for one am very grateful for that. You're right,
- 29:10why haven't we covered this before? Why doesn't
- 29:14anybody know about the box and why is Bella Coola
- 29:17not using it as its official mascot? It's true,
- 29:20like Turkmenistan. I just feel like it's like
- 29:23a taboo topic I think still for people to be
- 29:26bringing it up and We'll do the leg work for
- 29:29you guys. We'll not put it so much in the mainstream
- 29:33But we'll talk about it so that you guys feel
- 29:35more comfortable putting it in your sightings
- 29:37Because they might not be asking you for it,
- 29:40but it's important But I do also get it like
- 29:42if there's a bear sighting nobody asks about
- 29:45the penis But it's because we know enough about
- 29:47the bear penis. It's true. It's been scientifically
- 29:51studied It's got a bone and bears aren't specifically
- 29:55named bear man like It's not specifically because
- 29:59there's only males, which leads you to believe
- 30:01there's only bear males, which means that people
- 30:05have only sighted penises. You see what we're
- 30:09getting at? Instead, bears, we just don't say
- 30:11their name. We lose it to time, because it might
- 30:14have been brown penis. Exactly. That's probably
- 30:18a good spot to end it. I have been Taylor, here
- 30:21with Chelsea. We are Journey to the Fringe. Thank
