- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Monday.
- 0:14It's the 24th of February and it is great to have your company.
- 0:20I have returned from a couple of weeks away doing my chaplaincy
- 0:24Army training, which was really wonderful.
- 0:27I got to do that with Air Force and Navy chaplains and some Army
- 0:31chaplains and we spoke all about how do we do what we do in this
- 0:36crazy military context and it was fantastic.
- 0:39But now I'm back in normal life to keep on going.
- 0:43And that is what we're going to do.
- 0:44We're going to keep on going in this fascinating story.
- 0:48And today, today we see the end of an era.
- 0:51We have seen the Elijah Elijah story, which takes up like a
- 0:56third of first and 2nd Kings. That comes to an end today as we
- 1:01see the end of Elijah's life. And unfortunately, the Kings in
- 1:05the North and the Kings in Judah are in such a bad way that they
- 1:10can't even take any advantage when all of their political
- 1:14adversaries around them are weak.
- 1:16They can't do anything good for their countries because
- 1:19spiritually they are still so corrupt.
- 1:22So we continue to see the failings of earthly kings even
- 1:26when the situation is ripe for their benefit.
- 1:30No, it's not to be. So let's continue this story
- 1:33today, friends, as we read together Second Kings chapter
- 1:3713. Jehovah has son of Jehu began to
- 1:50rule over Israel in the 23rd year of King Joash's reign in
- 1:54Judah. He reigned in Samaria 17 years,
- 1:58but he did what was evil in the Lord's sight.
- 2:01He followed the example of Jeroboam son of Nebat,
- 2:05continuing the sins that Jeroboam had LED Israel to
- 2:08commit. So the Lord is very angry with
- 2:11Israel, and He allowed King Hazael of Aram and his son Ben
- 2:15Haddad to defeat them repeatedly.
- 2:19Then Jehoahas prayed for the Lord's help, and the Lord heard
- 2:23his prayer, for he could see how severely the king of Aram was
- 2:27oppressing Israel. So the Lord provided someone to
- 2:30rescue the Israelites from the tyranny of the Arameans.
- 2:35Then Israel lived in safety again, as they had in former
- 2:38days, but they continued to sin, following the evil example of
- 2:43Jeroboam. They also allowed the Ashrae
- 2:46pole and Samaria to remain standing.
- 2:49Finally, Jehovah's army was reduced to 50 charioteers, 10
- 2:55Chariots and 10,000 foot soldiers.
- 2:59The king of Aram had killed the others, trampling them like dust
- 3:02under his feet. The rest of the events in
- 3:06Jehovah's reign, everything he did, and the extent of his power
- 3:10are recorded in the book of the History of the Kings of Israel.
- 3:15When Jehovah has died, he was buried in Samaria.
- 3:19Then his son Jehovah became the next king.
- 3:25Jehovah son of Jehovah has began to rule over Israel.
- 3:29In the 37th year of King Joash's reign in Judah.
- 3:33He reigned in Samaria 16 years. But he did what was evil in the
- 3:38Lord's sight. He refused to turn from the sins
- 3:41that Jeroboam, son of Nebat had LED Israel to commit.
- 3:46The rest of the events of Jehoash's reign and everything
- 3:49he did, including the extent of his power and his war with King
- 3:53Amaziah of Judah, are recorded in the Book of the History of
- 3:57the Kings of Israel. When Jehoash died, he was buried
- 4:02in Samaria with the kings of Israel.
- 4:05Then his son Jeroboam the Second became the next king.
- 4:10When Elisha was in his last illness, King Jehoash of Israel
- 4:15visited him and wept over him. My father, my father, I see the
- 4:21Chariots and charioteers of Israel.
- 4:24He cried. Elisha told him get a bow and
- 4:28some arrows and the king did what he was told.
- 4:32Elisha told him put your hand on the bow and Elisha laid his own
- 4:37hands on the King's hands. Then he commanded open that
- 4:41eastern window and he opened it. Then he said shoot, so he shot
- 4:48an arrow. Elisha proclaimed.
- 4:51This is the Lord's arrow, an arrow of victory over Aram, for
- 4:56you will completely conquer the Arameans at AFAC.
- 5:01Then he said, Now pick up the other arrows and strike them
- 5:06against the ground. So the king picked them up and
- 5:10struck the ground three times, but the man of God was angry
- 5:13with him. You should have struck the
- 5:16ground 5 or 6 times, he exclaimed.
- 5:19Then you would have beaten Aram until it was entirely destroyed,
- 5:24but now you will be victorious only three times.
- 5:29Then Elisha died and was buried. Groups of Moabite Raiders used
- 5:36to invade the land each spring. Once, when some Israelites were
- 5:41burying a man, they spied a band of these Raiders, so they
- 5:44hastily threw the corpse into the tomb of Elisha and fled.
- 5:48But as soon as the body touched Elisha's bones, the dead man
- 5:53revived and jumped to his feet. King Hazael of Aram had
- 5:58oppressed Israel during the entire reign of King Jehoiahas.
- 6:02But the Lord was gracious and merciful to the people of
- 6:05Israel, and they were not totally destroyed.
- 6:08He pitied them because of his covenant with Abraham, Isaac,
- 6:12and Jacob, and to this day he still has not completely
- 6:16destroyed them or banished them from his presence.
- 6:20King Hazael of Aram died and his son Ben Haddad became the next
- 6:25king. Then Jehoash son of Jehoah has
- 6:29recaptured from Ben Haddad son of Hazael the towns that had
- 6:33been taken from Jehoash's father.
- 6:36Jehoah has Jehoash defeated Ben Haddad on three occasions and he
- 6:41recovered the Israelite towns. Ah Lord, there is no stopping
- 6:54you. Even when your great prophet
- 6:57dies, even his bones are able to continue your work.
- 7:04Ah Lord, I wonder what part of our life we think is dead.
- 7:08I wonder what part of our life we have given up on and are
- 7:12ready to walk away from, but You are ready to bring life back out
- 7:17of even even that set of bones lying on the ground there.
- 7:21Ah, Lord, I pray for your creative energy, your presence,
- 7:27and your life, that you would have your way in our life and
- 7:32that through us you would bring your Kingdom realities to places
- 7:37where all seems lost because you are indeed the God of the
- 7:41impossible. And so we give you our praise
- 7:46and we rest our faith at your feet.
- 7:49We love you and we worship you. And it's in the name of your Son
- 7:54Jesus that we pray all of these things.
- 7:57Amen.
