- 0:00What's up, everybody? Charlie Marlow here talking
- 0:02NASCAR once again and Nascort once again.
- 0:06We have CODA coming up this weekend.
- 0:08We had Atlanta. We'll break all that down.
- 0:11But I do want to start on the legal front.
- 0:14Just as we talked about last week, you have this Joe Gibbs
- 0:17Racing versus Chris Gabehart lawsuit going on.
- 0:20There's actually an injunction hearing going on as I record
- 0:24this. So basically, as we told you
- 0:26last week, Joe Gibbs Racing accusing Chris Gabehart, their
- 0:31former competition director up until just recently this
- 0:36offseason, accusing him allegedly of theft of
- 0:40intellectual property, proprietary data when it comes
- 0:44to the cars and chassis setups and all that.
- 0:47Remember Chris Gabehart before that at Joe Gibbs Racing was the
- 0:50crew chief for Denny Hamlin. So last week this was announced,
- 0:55kind of shocking. And then Chris Gabehart comes
- 1:00out with statements and and totally denies all this.
- 1:03And then right after the next day or so, you have the
- 1:06announcement that Chris Gabehart takes the chief Motorsports
- 1:10officer role at Spire Motorsports.
- 1:13So then Joe Gibbs Racing adds Spire Motorsports to this
- 1:19lawsuit. And I'm not going to just get
- 1:22crazy into this, but Joe Gibbs Racing, they're suing for
- 1:25something like $8 million. They want Chris Gabhart to sit
- 1:30out while this is all going on. But again, we have this
- 1:34injunction going on right now. It's, it's kind of, it's kind of
- 1:37like the whole charter situation, the injunction last
- 1:41year with 2311 Racing and Front Row Motorsports, where the first
- 1:46half of that battle was about the injunction.
- 1:48And then obviously it was the actual trial.
- 1:51So I'm not going to get into all the legalese.
- 1:54I'll just, I'll just say this and and Chris Gebhart came out
- 1:58also this week and basically said that this wasn't really
- 2:02about the theft of intellectual property.
- 2:05This is coming from him. I'm I'm paraphrasing this.
- 2:07This was about an employee leaving and Joe Gibbs Racing not
- 2:13being happy about that. And Chris Gaybard basically said
- 2:16there was a lot of friction where they wanted him to be the
- 2:20crew chief for Ty Gibbs. You obviously have the situation
- 2:24there, which is very awkward because Ty Gibbs is coach Joe
- 2:27Gibbs grandson. You basically have the the
- 2:31nepotism play out there. And there was some, there was
- 2:36some audio also of Chris Gebhardt and Ty Gibbs
- 2:39communicating on track. And you can see there was some
- 2:42friction there. And so again, I'm not going to
- 2:44get into the the real legal part of this.
- 2:47I'm not a lawyer. I'll just, I'll just say this.
- 2:50And look, I'm not this reporter that that covers NASCAR every
- 2:55week at the track. So I don't I don't care.
- 2:57I'll give you my opinion. I know you might say, OK, you're
- 3:00not supposed to root for one side or the other, but we're in
- 3:03the game of opinions and and look, when the NASCAR lawsuit
- 3:07happened last year, I kind of said all along that I thought
- 3:11the teams would win. And when I say I wanted the
- 3:15teams to win, the only reason I said that is because just
- 3:19covering so many other labor issues, strikes, lockouts in
- 3:23other sports, NFLNHLNBAMLB, NASCAR was having their first
- 3:28real labor issue. And essentially the players or
- 3:35in this case, the teams almost always win these.
- 3:38And again, it wasn't necessarily a win because they didn't go
- 3:44through with it in court, but it certainly was a win for the
- 3:46teams because NASCAR settled and gave the teams permanent
- 3:50charters and a lot of the things they were asking for, a bigger
- 3:54portion of the economic pie and all that.
- 3:57But again, I just bring that up to say I had no problem giving
- 4:00my opinion on NASCAR before I did happen to be right there.
- 4:05I'm not always right. I'm wrong all the time, I'm
- 4:08wrong all the time. But I'll say this, if I have to
- 4:10choose a side here, Joe Gibbs Racing versus Chris Gebhardt,
- 4:15I'm going to the side of Chris Gebhardt.
- 4:18And, and here's why. Just following NASCAR really
- 4:24every week, every day for the last four plus years.
- 4:29I've always thought Chris Gebhardt was one of the smartest
- 4:32guys in the sport. Every time he talked, every time
- 4:35I saw him tweet, our guy Matt Weaver got a lot of interviews
- 4:39with him after races. He always, every time I've seen
- 4:43him has come across as one of the smartest dudes in the
- 4:46garage. And look, you can't steal
- 4:50somebody's brain. So is he going to, is he going
- 4:52to take information from Joe Gibbs?
- 4:55Of course he is. This has been going on since
- 4:58NASCAR started. Now, obviously digitally, that's
- 5:01different. You can't walk out of there with
- 5:03computers and hard drives or flash drives and all that, like
- 5:08you're going to get caught. So I don't know exactly what
- 5:10happened. I'm just telling you, I would be
- 5:12very surprised if it was that obvious.
- 5:14Now, of course, can you memorize setups?
- 5:19Can you go home and write them down?
- 5:21I mean, can you write them in the notes section on your
- 5:24personal phone? I'm not going to look over his
- 5:27contract. I'm just saying we all know how
- 5:30it works. If you go from one team to
- 5:33another, you're going to take that knowledge with you.
- 5:36Yeah. You can't take a computer with
- 5:37you. You can't take your personal
- 5:39laptop. You, you can't go in there and
- 5:41and take a a folder. But let's be real.
- 5:44You've probably learned it in a way or wrote it down on paper or
- 5:50put it on your personal computer at home.
- 5:52Let's let's really be honest about how this works.
- 5:55You're going to be able to take a huge part of that information
- 5:59with you. And also, you know, the Ty Gibbs
- 6:02stuff this week was a new wrinkle to this story.
- 6:04And again, I'll just say, every time I hear Chris Gabhart talk,
- 6:08he comes across as one of the smartest dudes in NASCAR.
- 6:12And let's be real, Ty Gibbs, the last four or five years when
- 6:15I've really been studying this sport, watching him come up in
- 6:19Xfinity now O'Reilly winning a championship, he many times
- 6:24comes across very spoiled. And it's it's fair to discuss
- 6:29the fact that he's the grandson of Coach Joe Gibbs.
- 6:32And by the way, I I think his trajectory is, is OK.
- 6:35I actually think Ty Gibbs will probably win a race this year,
- 6:38but he comes across spoiled many, many times.
- 6:42So now, does that have everything to do with this
- 6:46particular lawsuit? No, I'm just telling you, I
- 6:49think it's better for NASCAR when Chris Gabehart is in the
- 6:52game. So I hope he's able to continue
- 6:55to work at Spire Motorsports even while this lawsuit goes on.
- 7:00I think he's great for the sport.
- 7:01Carson Hosevar is great for the sport.
- 7:03Spire Motorsports, they're they're on the come up man.
- 7:08And I think if you add Jeff Dickerson and Carson Hosevar and
- 7:12the knowledge of somebody like Chris Gabehart, only good things
- 7:15can happen. So I'll just say it, I am I am
- 7:18rooting for Chris Gaybhart. I mean, the money and all that.
- 7:20I don't really care if they settle and maybe Joe Gibbs get
- 7:23some money or or whatever it is. Again, I don't really care about
- 7:26that. I just think the sport of NASCAR
- 7:28is better when Chris Gaybhart is in the sport.
- 7:31So I hope he stays in the sport even while this is going on.
- 7:35All right, enough of that. Koda coming up.
- 7:39Love Koda. It's my favorite Rd. course.
- 7:42I like the way the season starts, where you go Daytona
- 7:46500, boom, Super Bowl, superspeedway out of the gate,
- 7:49didn't love the fuel saving, love the finish, love the
- 7:53pageantry, the pomp and circumstance pre race and all
- 7:57that. The Great American race, it was
- 7:58awesome. You go to Atlanta, arguably the
- 8:02best track on the circuit right now.
- 8:05We always talk about the Jeff Block polls.
- 8:08First poll for Daytona 500, I think it was something like 74%.
- 8:12I would argue that that was bailed out by a finish that was
- 8:15great. I think if the finish wasn't
- 8:17great, that race was probably more around 50%.
- 8:21Atlanta was just amazing racing. Whatever the pole was, 93%.
- 8:26I agree with that because it was just really, really good green
- 8:31flag racing, passing, obviously drafting track, but you can see
- 8:36guys move around, you can see racecraft, and at the end you
- 8:40had another great finish there. Tyler Reddick goes back-to-back.
- 8:43We all know there's a lot of luck involved at superspeedways
- 8:47or in Atlanta, which now races like a superspeedway.
- 8:50But Michael Jordan back in Victory Lane, and we're not
- 8:53talking about any stupid conspiracy theory shenanigans
- 8:56this time either, but Tyler Reddick back-to-back, I believe
- 9:01the 6th NASCAR driver to ever do that.
- 9:04The last was Matt Kenseth. We talked about this on the Mark
- 9:07Martin Archive podcast. I think Jeff Gordon, some other
- 9:10older racers, but Tyler Reddick has a chance to be the first
- 9:15NASCAR Cup driver ever to start the season with three straight
- 9:19wins. And we know Tyler Reddick is
- 9:20very good on road courses at CODA.
- 9:23We'll see if he can get that done.
- 9:25But also, is it just SV, GS show?
- 9:28Can anybody beat Shane Mann Gisbergen on a road course?
- 9:32We shall see. All right, for my Saint Louis
- 9:35people, Saint Louis lawn care, they were at my house earlier
- 9:38today doing the aeration. They do the aeration and the
- 9:41over seeding this time of year. If you're in Saint Louis, you
- 9:44want your lawn cut. They've been cutting my grass
- 9:46for like 5-6 years. You get your mulch, your fresh
- 9:50mulch treatment this time of year.
- 9:52If you got some leaves leftover, they can handle all of that.
- 9:56That's Saint Louis lawn care. stllawncare.com.
- 9:58My guy Tim Jenkerson, he also has Saint Louis equipment that
- 10:02is stlmowerrepair.com. Buy a brand new lawnmower, get
- 10:06your lawnmower repaired. Small engines, trimmers,
- 10:10blowers, all that. We're supposed to get snow
- 10:13coming up. We're supposed to get snow in
- 10:15Saint Louis Sunday, Monday if we do well, maybe be prepared
- 10:19anyway with some salt. They do salt, bulk salt.
- 10:22They'll service your snow plows. They got snow plows.
- 10:24They do it all. Hopefully no more big snow.
- 10:26But it, it does look like we're supposed to get snow, I believe
- 10:29Sunday, Monday, pretty good chance of that.
- 10:31So that's stlmowerrepair.com. I bought a trimmer there.
- 10:35I bought a blower there. We've got mulch from them and
- 10:39then STL Lawn Care, They've done a bunch of landscaping.
- 10:43We've got Arbor Vita right there.
- 10:44We got some juniper in the front, we got some boxwoods.
- 10:47They do it all. stllawncare.com, stlmowerrepair.com and then of
- 10:51course Triad Bank. My peoples at Triad Bank,
- 10:54Matthew Tobin, been working with him for like 5-6 years.
- 10:59Best thing I ever did for my rental property business, taking
- 11:01all my commercial loans from a big National Bank that did not
- 11:05care about me. Let me tell you, terrible
- 11:07experience with that big National Bank.
- 11:08I won't mention them but it wasn't good and I went on over
- 11:12to a local bank in Frontenac, Triad Bank,
- 11:16www.triadbanking.com. I'm telling you, I think we've
- 11:19done 6 or 7 loans with them over the years.
- 11:22A lot of buying and selling for rental properties have had the
- 11:24line of credit on the House. That was one way I started the
- 11:27rental property business. Still have the line of credit.
- 11:30Got a brand new short term rental this past summer.
- 11:34Called up Matthew Tobin on Memorial Day weekend because
- 11:36that's when we saw it. Hated to bother him on a
- 11:39holiday, but you know what? He answered my text, got us our
- 11:43pre approval letter and we got the property.
- 11:46And that's what you get at Triad Bank Relationship based banking,
- 11:49Triad Bank, www.triadbanking.com.
- 11:55All right, there you go. So we talked Nas Port Joe Gibbs
- 12:00Racing versus Chris Gabhart. I'm going to go ahead and say
- 12:03I'm on Team Gabehart. Tell me why you agree or
- 12:06disagree. Koda coming up.
- 12:08Can't wait. My favorite Rd. course.
- 12:09We'll see if anybody can beat SVG.
- 12:13Atlanta was fantastic. Loved it.
- 12:16Loved Atlanta. All right, there you go.
- 12:19Peace out everybody. Have a great weekend.
- 12:22Enjoy Koda.
