- 0:58Speaker 2: Okay, so, Jeff, here's something that you've been saying for
- 1:02Speaker 2: how many episodes?
- 1:02Speaker 5: Now what am I saying?
- 1:05Speaker 2: I don't know. Okay, So what you keep saying is
- 1:07Speaker 2: my illustrious co host co host? Yes, yes, but you
- 1:13Speaker 2: see there should be an s after that because it's plural.
- 1:17Speaker 2: There's more than one. I mean, unfairness. It's Josh so
- 1:20Speaker 2: not really, but I have a doctorate. Now I feel
- 1:27Speaker 2: like I have to correct you.
- 1:29Speaker 5: Oh boy, now it's really going to your head.
- 1:32Speaker 2: No, I'm just saying, I'm not the kind of person
- 1:35Speaker 2: who's going to constantly remind people that I have a doctorate. Okay,
- 1:40Speaker 2: I doctor Reflection of Perfection. Jason Likekins, am not the
- 1:44Speaker 2: type of person to constantly remind people about my doctorate degree.
- 1:52Speaker 4: Also, our current reigning and defending Grill opp Predictions champion.
- 1:56Speaker 2: Josh who does not have a doctor.
- 1:59Speaker 5: True, he sure doesn't.
- 2:01Speaker 6: He is a master in punk anomics either.
- 2:04Speaker 5: No, he does not.
- 2:05Speaker 2: He does.
- 2:08Speaker 5: Got to catch him on.
- 2:09Speaker 6: I'm about to retain this title, though, maybe try to
- 2:12Speaker 6: retain are you okay, we'll get We'll get to that
- 2:14Speaker 6: in a second.
- 2:15Speaker 2: All right.
- 2:15Speaker 4: We announced earlier this week that we had a special
- 2:17Speaker 4: guest coming.
- 2:18Speaker 2: On the show. Well, I'm usually here.
- 2:21Speaker 5: Well, you're not that special.
- 2:23Speaker 4: He was our first interview on this show early on.
- 2:26Speaker 4: He's well known in this area for a variety of reasons.
- 2:29Speaker 4: He's known mainly for his work ring announcing for All
- 2:33Speaker 4: Star Wrestling in Boone County and regard of pro wrestling,
- 2:35Speaker 4: among others. He is the not all oh he is
- 2:41Speaker 4: not learned to read. He is not only the ring
- 2:44Speaker 4: announcer but also a co organizer for RpW. Stern will
- 2:48Speaker 4: Slambury on July fifth. Adam Harris is joining us here
- 2:52Speaker 4: in the studio.
- 2:53Speaker 3: How are you doing, Hey, Thanks thanks for having me back.
- 2:55Speaker 3: Am I the first time return guest. Yes, you were
- 2:58Speaker 3: actually hey too time, very nice, very nice.
- 3:02Speaker 4: Yeah, first return guest on the show, first guest we've
- 3:05Speaker 4: had on the show. I actually looked back and that
- 3:08Speaker 4: was March of last year, was twenty nine.
- 3:11Speaker 3: And look at us now in the big studio, I know,
- 3:14Speaker 3: and you're allowing Josh and I to be here for
- 3:18Speaker 3: it as opposed to last time.
- 3:20Speaker 5: Well, you know what I had to do. What I
- 3:21Speaker 5: had to do last night.
- 3:22Speaker 2: Yeah, because so Adam, a little peak behind the curtain
- 3:24Speaker 2: here last time. Jeff didn't want us on here because
- 3:28Speaker 2: his name's on the show, so he didn't want anyone
- 3:32Speaker 2: to take any kind of glory from him from being
- 3:36Speaker 2: able to do a good interview.
- 3:39Speaker 3: Some Jeff's defense, I mean, we only had a limited
- 3:41Speaker 3: amount of time, and so I feel like that may
- 3:43Speaker 3: have been his primary concern. That and we were also
- 3:45Speaker 3: I think we were in a closet too, so I
- 3:47Speaker 3: mean all four of us in there would have been
- 3:48Speaker 3: a little tighter.
- 3:49Speaker 5: Yeah, Yeah, we were kind of in a closet.
- 3:51Speaker 3: Yeah, I liked the podcast. I don't know if I
- 3:52Speaker 3: like you guys that much.
- 3:54Speaker 5: Yeah, you know, I also, yeah, you are a fan
- 3:56Speaker 5: of the podcast. And honestly, outside of dal.
- 3:59Speaker 4: Couver Allen a couple of people around here at the station,
- 4:02Speaker 4: Adam has probably been one of our biggest supporters since
- 4:05Speaker 4: the beginning. And he's also he's.
- 4:07Speaker 5: Very well known around here for professional wrestling.
- 4:10Speaker 3: Well, I want to say congratulations because the show's been
- 4:12Speaker 3: going a long time and that is nothing to sneeze at.
- 4:15Speaker 3: Putting a show on regularly every week is hard work
- 4:17Speaker 3: and I know that. So congratulations, and that'll be me
- 4:19Speaker 3: putting you guys over.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Well, thank you. I take all the credit for that.
- 4:22Speaker 2: That's right.
- 4:23Speaker 5: We appreciate it. We very much appreciate it.
- 4:25Speaker 4: We will get to Regatta Pro in the next segment,
- 4:29Speaker 4: but we're going to start off with Mount Rushmore.
- 4:32Speaker 5: Okay.
- 4:32Speaker 4: Mount Rushmore is a segment we have not done in
- 4:34Speaker 4: quite some time. Yes, it is where we pick a
- 4:36Speaker 4: topic related to pro wrestling and give our input on
- 4:40Speaker 4: who is our Mount Rushmore for that subject. So we
- 4:43Speaker 4: have to pick four? Why do you always want me
- 4:46Speaker 4: to prove it? The subject for this episode.
- 4:50Speaker 5: Will be ring announcers.
- 4:53Speaker 3: Wow, amongst us, I had to think about this. I'm
- 4:56Speaker 3: glad you let me know we were going to do this. Yeah,
- 4:58Speaker 3: I hope.
- 4:59Speaker 2: They did, did you? You guys know I'm just now finding out.
- 5:01Speaker 3: All right, cool, this should be good, This should be good.
- 5:04Speaker 4: So we do We just take turns on who is
- 5:07Speaker 4: you know, one, and two and three until we get
- 5:10Speaker 4: the four on everybody's mount rush. That's usually how counting works. Yeah, four,
- 5:15Speaker 4: I know. Well, you know we all watch. Yeah, the
- 5:18Speaker 4: three of us went to college together, so we should
- 5:20Speaker 4: know how to count.
- 5:21Speaker 2: Granted I wouldn't get my doctorate.
- 5:26Speaker 4: Oh man, Okay, So actually, Adam, I'm gonna go ahead
- 5:30Speaker 4: and start off with you.
- 5:31Speaker 5: Who is number one or just a first on your
- 5:34Speaker 5: mount rush?
- 5:35Speaker 3: Well, I'm gonna say, man, are all kind of on
- 5:37Speaker 3: the same level. You know, some of them are more
- 5:39Speaker 3: sentimental to me than others. But I have to start
- 5:42Speaker 3: with what I think of as being the first bring
- 5:46Speaker 3: announcer that I heard probably was probably Mike McGirk, who
- 5:51Speaker 3: was the daughter of the promoter Leroy McGirk. And just
- 5:55Speaker 3: to name drop a little bit here, the last time
- 5:57Speaker 3: when Ted de Biassi came for the bashing and beck
- 6:00Speaker 3: I picked him up at the airport. He rode down
- 6:01Speaker 3: to Beckley in the car with me, and he mentioned
- 6:05Speaker 3: Mike McGirk and he said that Leroy McGirk wanted a
- 6:09Speaker 3: son so badly that he named his daughter Mike. Okay, okay,
- 6:14Speaker 3: I didn't know that part. I knew that she was
- 6:15Speaker 3: named Mike McGirk, but you know, she had those flashy outfits,
- 6:19Speaker 3: and to me, she's like the I associate her announcing
- 6:22Speaker 3: with a lot of the stars of that early pre
- 6:24Speaker 3: New generation stuff. Like to me, her undertaker introduction is
- 6:27Speaker 3: one of the best, you know. And she always said
- 6:30Speaker 3: weighing wang wang and hailing from and that's something I've
- 6:33Speaker 3: definitely picked up on. I feel like that's something that
- 6:36Speaker 3: just ingrained itself in me as a young man. And
- 6:39Speaker 3: I also found out on that road trip that Mike
- 6:41Speaker 3: McGirk and Ted Debiossi were an item for.
- 6:44Speaker 2: A little while.
- 6:45Speaker 3: Oh oh wow, how about that. I don't think that's
- 6:47Speaker 3: too far out of school. I think that's been put
- 6:49Speaker 3: out there before, but Ted mentioned it. He brought it up,
- 6:51Speaker 3: So there we go.
- 6:52Speaker 6: We got some confirmation on Okay, Josh, I had to
- 6:56Speaker 6: look up some names just because I couldn't remember all
- 6:58Speaker 6: the names that since I've been watching wrestling, and that's
- 7:00Speaker 6: so what I'm going off of. So, like Howard Finkel
- 7:02Speaker 6: is not gonna be on here just for that reason.
- 7:05Speaker 6: But I'm gonna start with Justin Roberts, like I feel
- 7:08Speaker 6: like he puts a lot of passion into what he
- 7:10Speaker 6: does and a lot of research and just he tries
- 7:13Speaker 6: to add that little bit of extra character to each
- 7:15Speaker 6: person he announces.
- 7:16Speaker 4: Okay, Justin Roberts, even though some people give him flack.
- 7:21Speaker 4: I do like his introduction of John Moxley.
- 7:24Speaker 5: Some people may not, some people may hate it. I
- 7:26Speaker 5: don't know for some reason.
- 7:27Speaker 3: Unlikely it's a little divisive. I would say, Yeah, I
- 7:30Speaker 3: read Roberts's book. I don't know if anybody you guys have,
- 7:33Speaker 3: but very interesting book, very interesting read. He's done a
- 7:36Speaker 3: lot of cool charity work. But also like unfortunately got
- 7:40Speaker 3: stretched by Crispin Wall.
- 7:42Speaker 5: Oh yeah, that's not.
- 7:44Speaker 2: A position any of us would ever ever want to
- 7:45Speaker 2: be in. No, absolutely not.
- 7:47Speaker 3: And a ring announcer, I don't care how much they're
- 7:49Speaker 3: getting paid, absolutely not.
- 7:51Speaker 5: Well, he also got choked out by Daniel Bryan at.
- 7:55Speaker 7: The time on the television.
- 7:57Speaker 5: Yeah, on television, all right, Jason, my.
- 8:00Speaker 2: First one is going to be you know, I grew
- 8:02Speaker 2: up listening to U. We're not listening to G. I
- 8:04Speaker 2: didn't grow up in the radio times, grew up watching
- 8:07Speaker 2: a lot of w c W. So I'm gonna have
- 8:09Speaker 2: to go with Gary Michael Capetta. How you say his
- 8:13Speaker 2: last name? He's the goat? You got it, g GMC.
- 8:16Speaker 3: Yeah, World's most Dangerous ring announcer.
- 8:19Speaker 6: Yes, okay, watching Jeff Struggle the type it's it is.
- 8:25Speaker 4: I like that you're keeping record though in case it's
- 8:28Speaker 4: so on all of our shows we all have.
- 8:31Speaker 5: We always keep a rundown, so like we always have.
- 8:34Speaker 4: Yeah, do you have the one pulled up right now?
- 8:37Speaker 4: Josh of like, uh, last week's our picks? Do not
- 8:41Speaker 4: have it on my phone? Oh well, okay, I was
- 8:43Speaker 4: just wondering. All right, So my first ring announcer for
- 8:48Speaker 4: my Mount Rushmore this is kind of cliche. I got
- 8:52Speaker 4: to give it to the Fink. I have to give
- 8:54Speaker 4: it to Howard Finkle. He's pretty much the voice of
- 8:57Speaker 4: the WWF at the.
- 8:58Speaker 5: Time, especially in the attitude. Are I know he did it?
- 9:01Speaker 4: Was doing it before, like all the way back to uh,
- 9:04Speaker 4: the first iteration of WrestleMania and such. But I just
- 9:09Speaker 4: that that that, you know, his his inflection and everything,
- 9:12Speaker 4: it just takes me back to the attitude era as
- 9:15Speaker 4: a child and that nostalgia and everything.
- 9:17Speaker 5: And it's the fink Like I feel like if we
- 9:21Speaker 5: did not have him at least a.
- 9:22Speaker 3: One of our ols on one, I agree, yeah that
- 9:25Speaker 3: and I'll just I'll go ahead and take my next one,
- 9:27Speaker 3: which was gonna be Howard Finkel anyway, I'll mention one
- 9:30Speaker 3: more than I feel like he's so influential. I mean,
- 9:34Speaker 3: he's the reason we think of a new you know
- 9:38Speaker 3: what I mean. And that's like it's a it's a
- 9:40Speaker 3: cliche at this point, but it was like Howard's inflection
- 9:43Speaker 3: and everything on that that made it so memorable.
- 9:46Speaker 4: Absolutely, It's it's kind of like with with Bruce Bruffer.
- 9:49Speaker 5: Now and still or and now you know whatever it
- 9:53Speaker 5: is that he does, Yeah, it is it.
- 9:56Speaker 2: It reminds me of now the think is the man.
- 9:58Speaker 6: Yeah, I will say it was pretty nice to you
- 10:00Speaker 6: his voice when they did the Randy Orton Edge match
- 10:02Speaker 6: back in twenty twenty.
- 10:03Speaker 3: That's right, yeah, very nice touch before very nice ever undisputed,
- 10:09Speaker 3: I mean, come on, you can't.
- 10:11Speaker 2: Argue with period. No, no, you can't.
- 10:13Speaker 6: All right, Josh, our mind's a little bit more recent.
- 10:17Speaker 6: Justin's kind of reason too, but I'll go with Samantha Irvin. Yeah,
- 10:20Speaker 6: so I'm just saying reasons supt for Justin. But also
- 10:21Speaker 6: one thing I really liked about her she did not
- 10:24Speaker 6: want to know the result of the match, so she
- 10:26Speaker 6: could be surprised when it happened.
- 10:28Speaker 2: I love that.
- 10:28Speaker 3: I love that and in any case in my experience.
- 10:31Speaker 2: Too, that's the best. Like I prefer it that way.
- 10:33Speaker 3: Unless I need to know, Like, don't keep it from
- 10:35Speaker 3: me if it's going to help, but that you know,
- 10:36Speaker 3: the show if I need to know. But otherwise I
- 10:38Speaker 3: would just rather not know. So oftentimes the fans I'm
- 10:41Speaker 3: reacting same way as them.
- 10:43Speaker 5: You're just getting an organic reaction.
- 10:44Speaker 2: Absolutely, and I would prefer it that way. Yeah.
- 10:46Speaker 6: I like the way she reacted to like Cody Roads winning,
- 10:49Speaker 6: that's the best.
- 10:49Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:50Speaker 3: I get chills thinking about it. It's great and it's
- 10:52Speaker 3: ingrained in history too.
- 10:53Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:53Speaker 5: Absolutely.
- 10:54Speaker 4: Also, like just on the show with the rundown, I
- 10:56Speaker 4: like to do that with Jason, get his organic reaction
- 10:59Speaker 4: on some.
- 10:59Speaker 3: Of the time yeah, I never, like Jeff will send
- 11:05Speaker 3: the rundown out.
- 11:06Speaker 2: I have never looked at one never probably. Oh, I
- 11:15Speaker 2: hate repeating ones that people have already said, but I
- 11:19Speaker 2: have to on this one. It's Howard Finkel. Yeah, the
- 11:22Speaker 2: Fink is the best. The fact that one. If you
- 11:26Speaker 2: watch a lot of the mean gene Okerland outtakes, you'll
- 11:33Speaker 2: see Howard Fink on there doing like Howard Coso. And
- 11:37Speaker 2: then just the people the story that people have about
- 11:40Speaker 2: Howard Finkle about how he always used the Fink ring
- 11:44Speaker 2: announce her voice. Yeah, it's Howard Finkel. However, yeah, watch
- 11:48Speaker 2: out for that chokes.
- 11:52Speaker 4: All right, So my second I will be repeating on
- 11:55Speaker 4: this one as well. Josh already said her name Samantha Irvin,
- 11:59Speaker 4: even though she seems like she does not want to
- 12:03Speaker 4: be a ring announcer apparently not. Yeah, which kind of
- 12:06Speaker 4: blows my mind because she was I thought phenomenal at
- 12:09Speaker 4: the job.
- 12:11Speaker 5: She really brought a lot of light, a lot of
- 12:13Speaker 5: life to her role.
- 12:16Speaker 4: And like, and we've talked about this before on the
- 12:18Speaker 4: show Adam about like ring announcers that sometimes it's unsung
- 12:23Speaker 4: U it's an underappreciated job, definitely, And somebody like her
- 12:28Speaker 4: or like yourself brings a lot of gravitas to that,
- 12:31Speaker 4: so yeah, you hope.
- 12:32Speaker 3: To you hope to add some personality to it, but
- 12:34Speaker 3: also not take away from it. And I felt like,
- 12:36Speaker 3: you know, Samantha Irvin did a good job of balancing
- 12:38Speaker 3: that for sure.
- 12:40Speaker 2: She I think was.
- 12:42Speaker 3: One of the I mean, do you guys think before her,
- 12:45Speaker 3: who was the last ring announcer that you can like
- 12:47Speaker 3: remember having personality or being like someone that was an attraction.
- 12:50Speaker 3: I mean, because Samantha was.
- 12:51Speaker 2: Over, Yeah, I mean before that, I would I would
- 12:54Speaker 2: almost say Lily and Garcia.
- 12:55Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean I think she must be the most
- 12:57Speaker 3: the next one before that, which was you know, she
- 13:00Speaker 3: Lillian was so over. They just brought her back recently
- 13:03Speaker 3: and is still doing Saturday Night's main event, So I
- 13:05Speaker 3: mean shout out to her.
- 13:06Speaker 4: Too, absolutely, And she was like, you want to talk
- 13:09Speaker 4: about Howard Finkle be in the voice for like the
- 13:12Speaker 4: Golden era, the New Generation era, and the Attitude era.
- 13:17Speaker 4: Lillia and Garcia was sort of the voice for the
- 13:19Speaker 4: ruthless Aggression era into the PG era for WWE pretty
- 13:23Speaker 4: much up until Yes Samantha Irvin came along, for sure,
- 13:26Speaker 4: and this isn't a This is like a slight shout out.
- 13:31Speaker 4: I thought Brandy Rhodes did do a decent job when
- 13:33Speaker 4: she was doing a little bit.
- 13:34Speaker 3: Hey, I was gonna put her in my honorable mention
- 13:37Speaker 3: because she has not got a good enough she hasn't
- 13:41Speaker 3: got enough credit for her ring announceing. Absolutely like and
- 13:43Speaker 3: if I brought her back in any way, it would
- 13:44Speaker 3: have been as ring announcer. I thought when whenever she
- 13:46Speaker 3: was on AW, I liked it more than Justin Roberts
- 13:48Speaker 3: quite frankly, you know. I mean I always thought she
- 13:50Speaker 3: was excellent at that. And maybe it's not a role
- 13:52Speaker 3: that's important enough for her, but I mean I definitely
- 13:55Speaker 3: had her on an honorable mention.
- 13:57Speaker 4: Absolutely, all right, So we will actually go back to you, Okay,
- 14:00Speaker 4: So who's your third?
- 14:01Speaker 3: I'm gonna do a quick repeat because I just think
- 14:03Speaker 3: he's the greatest. But that's Gary Michael Copetta because he
- 14:05Speaker 3: was the first ring announcer I ever saw live, and
- 14:08Speaker 3: I will always bring up the first show I went
- 14:10Speaker 3: to was in February of ninety two, and it was
- 14:12Speaker 3: at the Charleston Coliseum and actually the first thing I
- 14:15Speaker 3: remember him having to announce was that Sting would not
- 14:18Speaker 3: be appearing and neither would Ellie Gante, and that they
- 14:21Speaker 3: would be offering refunds up until the intermission of the show.
- 14:25Speaker 3: And that always stuck with me because I remember, first
- 14:27Speaker 3: of all, as a kid, I thought.
- 14:29Speaker 2: Who would ask for a refund? You know, this is
- 14:31Speaker 2: the greatest thing of all time being here, you know.
- 14:33Speaker 2: And that also that.
- 14:34Speaker 3: It would only go up until intermission, like if you
- 14:37Speaker 3: stuck around after that, they're like, sorry, kid.
- 14:39Speaker 2: You're not gonna get your money back.
- 14:41Speaker 3: But he was just like the voice of WCWWW. Saturday
- 14:43Speaker 3: Night was like the free TV that you got to
- 14:45Speaker 3: watch at six o'clock on Saturdays, and Gary Michael competit
- 14:48Speaker 3: was on there, I mean, and it's ingrained in me
- 14:50Speaker 3: the same way. My announcing is similar very much to
- 14:52Speaker 3: Mike McGirk and to Gary Michael compettit because I'll say
- 14:55Speaker 3: wrestling fans like a hundred times during a show. Yeah,
- 14:58Speaker 3: And if you go back and listen to Gary Michael,
- 14:59Speaker 3: he says almost every time he'll say our next contest,
- 15:03Speaker 3: wrestling fans is the one fault.
- 15:04Speaker 2: You know.
- 15:04Speaker 3: It's always in there. He's working it in there so
- 15:07Speaker 3: real quick.
- 15:08Speaker 4: What is your do you like it when you say, okay,
- 15:11Speaker 4: so you announce the match is just a quick little question,
- 15:15Speaker 4: all right, and you say one fall and the fans
- 15:17Speaker 4: repeat one fall. Do you is that like, okay, I've
- 15:21Speaker 4: I got the fans a little bit with me right now, or.
- 15:25Speaker 3: I think at this point it's it's I try to
- 15:27Speaker 3: limit that. Like usually at the start of the show,
- 15:30Speaker 3: it's like a good thing to do because everybody's involved,
- 15:32Speaker 3: they're excited about it, and I usually try to give
- 15:35Speaker 3: them at least that first one at the top of
- 15:37Speaker 3: the show. To me, it kind of wears out after that,
- 15:41Speaker 3: like it's not as cool every time. It's almost like,
- 15:44Speaker 3: you know, like a loud chop or whatever, or you know,
- 15:48Speaker 3: an obvious leg slab.
- 15:49Speaker 2: Why.
- 15:49Speaker 3: It's like the more you do it, the less it
- 15:51Speaker 3: kind of brings to the table, is my opinion on.
- 15:54Speaker 5: It waters it down a little bit.
- 15:55Speaker 3: A little bit, yeah, a little bit. So I like
- 15:56Speaker 3: to do it, you know, for that first one. And
- 15:59Speaker 3: to me, it's also like a matter of keeping the
- 16:01Speaker 3: show rolling. But if the audio and the PA is
- 16:03Speaker 3: working good enough, and the sound person is good enough,
- 16:06Speaker 3: which is the tag team partner of the ring announcer.
- 16:08Speaker 2: Always.
- 16:10Speaker 3: I'd like to just hit the music because that's kind
- 16:12Speaker 3: of how they do on the pros, you know. And
- 16:14Speaker 3: so I'm doing this contest to schedule for one fall
- 16:16Speaker 3: and it just for the whatever whatever over top of
- 16:18Speaker 3: the music, you know, just because so they can get
- 16:20Speaker 3: started to coming to the ring, you know, and that
- 16:22Speaker 3: helps the pace a little bit, okay, and then usually
- 16:26Speaker 3: again around the main event, they're going to work it
- 16:27Speaker 3: in anyway.
- 16:28Speaker 4: So well, yeah, always all right, Josh, who's your number three?
- 16:32Speaker 6: We kind of talked about her a little bit, but
- 16:34Speaker 6: I would say Lily and Garcia nice perhaps probably the
- 16:37Speaker 6: biggest female voice ring announcer ever, probably.
- 16:40Speaker 3: The most recognizable, certainly before Samantha obviously.
- 16:44Speaker 2: Yeah, those of us of a.
- 16:45Speaker 3: Certain age where we'll remember Mike McGirk, though she was
- 16:48Speaker 3: the pioneer.
- 16:49Speaker 2: Yeah, so I've got to touch back on your on
- 16:53Speaker 2: your story really quick, Adam. I think it's really funny
- 16:56Speaker 2: that it was you know, I'm sorry Sting will not
- 17:00Speaker 2: be here if you want to refund.
- 17:02Speaker 3: I'm sorry Ellie.
- 17:04Speaker 2: Gante won't be here if you want to and we
- 17:07Speaker 2: were like, eh, yeah, those two are definitely on the
- 17:10Speaker 2: same same level.
- 17:12Speaker 3: Then I'm sure they have been advertised man and as
- 17:15Speaker 3: like whatever. I was ten years old at that time,
- 17:17Speaker 3: like Ellie Gante, I didn't know about work rate. No,
- 17:20Speaker 3: he was just a seven foot monster. Yeah, he was
- 17:22Speaker 3: just tall.
- 17:22Speaker 2: Who could stop him?
- 17:24Speaker 3: Turns out almost everybody, yes, most importantly himself.
- 17:27Speaker 2: Yes, uh maybe some steps maybe. Okay, so some individuals
- 17:32Speaker 2: who may not know Ellie Gante it is eight foot
- 17:34Speaker 2: tall giant Gonzalez. Yes, yeah yeah, and uh before the
- 17:39Speaker 2: first suit, like he hadn't done the Furst suit yet. Yes, no,
- 17:42Speaker 2: at this point he was just kind of wearing like
- 17:44Speaker 2: black tights.
- 17:46Speaker 3: Black shorts, yeah, sometimes a headband.
- 17:49Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 17:50Speaker 3: And somehow, somehow they managed to make it even worse
- 17:54Speaker 3: with the first suit.
- 17:54Speaker 2: It was like he had the worst year until.
- 17:56Speaker 5: Yeah, oh my gosh.
- 17:59Speaker 2: Wasn't he in the that like Halloween cage match where
- 18:04Speaker 2: Abdullah the butcher?
- 18:06Speaker 8: Yeah?
- 18:06Speaker 2: The electric electric chair?
- 18:08Speaker 5: Yeah, what was it?
- 18:09Speaker 3: The hell Chamber of Chamber, Chamber of Classic was that
- 18:16Speaker 3: Stuff's like comfort food to me?
- 18:18Speaker 2: I mean, Dub's going to Dupsy Dub Chamber of Doom.
- 18:24Speaker 2: All right, Okay, Oh, I hate to do it again,
- 18:28Speaker 2: but Lily and Garcia, you know, I I'll be honest,
- 18:33Speaker 2: I don't care for the way Justin Roberts announces. I
- 18:37Speaker 2: feel like a lot of times he's trying to get
- 18:40Speaker 2: himself over with it. And it shouldn't be taking emphasis
- 18:44Speaker 2: away from the show. It should be adding into And
- 18:48Speaker 2: if you're not adding, then you're taking away. And I
- 18:52Speaker 2: just don't care for Justin Roberts announcing okay, especially anytime
- 18:56Speaker 2: he says John Motty. So it's like a Vince McMain impression.
- 19:04Speaker 4: A little bit real quick. I remember which one. I
- 19:08Speaker 4: think it was Revolution twenty twenty. The three of us
- 19:12Speaker 4: were watching it. Uh, we were somewhere, I can't remember.
- 19:16Speaker 4: We're watching it. John Moxley comes out and Justin Roberts
- 19:19Speaker 4: does the Moxley and that's the first thing that came
- 19:22Speaker 4: out of your mouth.
- 19:23Speaker 2: Jason. Yeah, that's part of the reason why I said that.
- 19:30Speaker 5: Also, not to copy you two.
- 19:34Speaker 2: But your own idea is I got I have one
- 19:37Speaker 2: more after this.
- 19:37Speaker 4: But I was just going to say Lilian Garcia to me,
- 19:40Speaker 4: I have to say Lily and Garcia because yes, I
- 19:44Speaker 4: remember Howard Finkel. You go back and you watch all
- 19:47Speaker 4: the old WCW not wcw WWF attitude era stuff, the
- 19:52Speaker 4: new generation, the Golden age, Howard Finkel was.
- 19:55Speaker 2: The man totally.
- 19:56Speaker 4: But when I was really you're talking about like Adam
- 19:59Speaker 4: around ten years old, like going and seeing all that
- 20:02Speaker 4: around ten years old, that was what was it. That
- 20:07Speaker 4: was when Stone Cold had just finished up, So it
- 20:09Speaker 4: was after two thousand and three, two thousand and five,
- 20:12Speaker 4: that was during Triple H's Reign of Terror. Looking back
- 20:15Speaker 4: at it, not the best stuff.
- 20:21Speaker 2: It's comfort food, yeah, definitely.
- 20:22Speaker 3: Yeah at that time you were like loving it though, right.
- 20:25Speaker 4: Oh yeah, yeah, So Lily and Garcia is like that,
- 20:30Speaker 4: Like she was the voice of a lot of that, definitely,
- 20:32Speaker 4: and not all of it was bad, but there was
- 20:34Speaker 4: some bad stuff in there.
- 20:36Speaker 5: So I have to give it the Lily and Garcia.
- 20:38Speaker 4: I mean, she's pretty much she pretty much picked up
- 20:41Speaker 4: the torch after the faint, you know, started phasing out.
- 20:44Speaker 5: Yeah, and she became the voice after that definitely.
- 20:47Speaker 2: So before we give our last one, can can we
- 20:50Speaker 2: each give an honorable mention? Yeah, that's a good idea.
- 20:52Speaker 2: I already did mine.
- 20:53Speaker 5: Yeah, I agree with you on that. With Brandy Rhodes,
- 20:56Speaker 5: I very underappreciated.
- 21:00Speaker 6: I don't know who contribution.
- 21:02Speaker 3: And I think I think that's one of the reasons
- 21:03Speaker 3: we're going to see some overlap, is that? I mean,
- 21:05Speaker 3: you can't even name that many ring announcers. You know,
- 21:07Speaker 3: we're the biggest wrestling fans there are, unless and somebody
- 21:09Speaker 3: if you, if you said like Boyd Pierce, I would
- 21:11Speaker 3: know you were just trying to be you know, an
- 21:13Speaker 3: old school mark or something, you know, like from World
- 21:15Speaker 3: Class or whatever, which he did have awesome suits.
- 21:17Speaker 2: Okay, yeah, so Josh you have one, Yeah, Boyd Pierce. Well,
- 21:22Speaker 2: since no one.
- 21:23Speaker 4: Mentioned Oya ahead, that's why we're all looking at you, Josh.
- 21:30Speaker 6: So I wasn't gonna put them on the Mount Rushmore,
- 21:31Speaker 6: but I will put Finkel on there. Like the reason
- 21:34Speaker 6: I put didn't put on Mount Rushmore because I wasn't
- 21:36Speaker 6: watching when he was announcing. I didn't watch Attitude. I
- 21:38Speaker 6: was watching W'SW at the time.
- 21:40Speaker 2: So makes sense.
- 21:41Speaker 6: But from what I've heard from recording stuff, yeah, he's great.
- 21:46Speaker 5: All right.
- 21:46Speaker 2: However, so you were you were watching w c W.
- 21:50Speaker 2: But I I notice there's no Gary Michael Capeto. Where's GMC?
- 21:55Speaker 2: I don't remember? You don't remember him.
- 21:57Speaker 6: I remember another person who's going to be my next
- 22:00Speaker 6: pH Okay, okay.
- 22:01Speaker 2: Okay, well you see my honorable mention, I'm going to
- 22:05Speaker 2: count him as a wrestling announcer because he did the
- 22:08Speaker 2: big events for WCW. Michael Buffer.
- 22:15Speaker 3: Oh, okay, okay, okay, all.
- 22:17Speaker 2: Right, Well you knew it was a big match whenever
- 22:20Speaker 2: they spent the money for Let's get ready to Rumble, Yeah,
- 22:24Speaker 2: and would bring in Michael Buffer.
- 22:26Speaker 5: Yeah, all right, Adam, who's your final one?
- 22:29Speaker 3: I'm going to go out here and say, Bobby Cruz
- 22:31Speaker 3: the Ring of Honor ring announcer, even though I did
- 22:33Speaker 3: not watch a ton of Ring of Honor, and admittedly,
- 22:37Speaker 3: and I think one day in my life I will
- 22:39Speaker 3: revert and just start watching Ring of Honor from the
- 22:42Speaker 3: beginning maybe, and I'll just do that for my retirement.
- 22:45Speaker 3: But still to this day he's on Collision, I think
- 22:49Speaker 3: at least regularly or semi regular and on the Ring
- 22:52Speaker 3: of Honor program. He started in nineteen ninety four, so
- 22:54Speaker 3: he's already over thirty years as a ring announcer. And
- 22:57Speaker 3: I think the thing that I like the most about him,
- 22:59Speaker 3: and here's where I picked up on it was during
- 23:02Speaker 3: the pandemic when they did the Return of the Pure
- 23:04Speaker 3: Tournament and Bobby Cruz was like announcing the rules and
- 23:08Speaker 3: all that because those are different matches kind of you know,
- 23:10Speaker 3: you kind of have to know what's happening for that,
- 23:12Speaker 3: and I thought, I was like, wow, he just gave
- 23:15Speaker 3: this all an air of legitimacy, like it sounds legitimately.
- 23:20Speaker 3: It sounds legitimate to me when Bobby Cruz does the
- 23:22Speaker 3: ring announcing. And I'll also just say when the first
- 23:25Speaker 3: all in happened, I'm nanty nine percent sure that was
- 23:28Speaker 3: Bobby Cruz, you know, because it was basically a Ring
- 23:30Speaker 3: of honor show, a glorified Ring of honor show.
- 23:33Speaker 5: I'm almost positive it was him.
- 23:34Speaker 3: Brandy Rose may have done some on that show. I'm
- 23:36Speaker 3: not sure if they mix it up or not, but
- 23:38Speaker 3: I just went back and looked. I know he announced
- 23:39Speaker 3: Cody versus Aldus, and so again, I just think he
- 23:43Speaker 3: adds an air of credibility, like it sounds like a
- 23:45Speaker 3: legit contest.
- 23:47Speaker 2: When Bobby Cruise is in there, that's awesome, all right.
- 23:51Speaker 6: So Jason had him as the Honora mentioned but Michael
- 23:54Speaker 6: Buffer like, that's the one guy I couldn't remember his
- 23:58Speaker 6: name until I looked it up. That's the one guy
- 24:00Speaker 6: I remember as a kid. It's like, yeah, this is
- 24:02Speaker 6: a big match. Is an important match, something serious about
- 24:05Speaker 6: to happen, So it's gotta be Michael Buffer.
- 24:07Speaker 3: And they would even bring him in for certain nitrosy. Yeah,
- 24:10Speaker 3: it wasn't even like pay per views like sometimes there's
- 24:12Speaker 3: like a nitro main event, and that made Nitro seem
- 24:14Speaker 3: even Yeah.
- 24:16Speaker 5: All right, Jason, Well you say I have too.
- 24:25Speaker 2: I'm not going to you know, I'm not going to
- 24:27Speaker 2: give you both, but I'm going to say no, I
- 24:30Speaker 2: think Tony Chimmel was underappreciation, you know, especially with his
- 24:34Speaker 2: rated rs. Oh good one, but okay, that's not who
- 24:41Speaker 2: I'm picking. That's not who I'm honorable mentioned to. Yes,
- 24:45Speaker 2: I have a doctorate, so it's okay, I'm going to
- 24:50Speaker 2: go with I'm going to go a little old school
- 24:54Speaker 2: on this and go with Larry Shipley, the ring announcer
- 25:02Speaker 2: for the AWA from nineteen eighty three to nineteen eighty nine. Okay.
- 25:07Speaker 2: He also wrote a book called Stranglehold about his life
- 25:10Speaker 2: and career. And I didn't read that off of his wiki.
- 25:16Speaker 2: That was all from memory. It was I.
- 25:19Speaker 4: So is Larry Shippley your final one?
- 25:22Speaker 2: Yes, I'm picking him over Tony chimmele well, and.
- 25:26Speaker 3: So he probably would have announced some of the early
- 25:28Speaker 3: Hull cogan then right like before he was you know
- 25:30Speaker 3: what we think of his whole cogan, It was probably
- 25:31Speaker 3: Larry Shipley.
- 25:32Speaker 5: My final one is actually gonna be Tony chimbl.
- 25:35Speaker 3: There you go, all right, all right, very cool.
- 25:38Speaker 4: I was one I wanted to say Tony Chimble before,
- 25:40Speaker 4: but you both of you were already saying Lily and Garcia.
- 25:43Speaker 4: So I was like, all right, I'll just throw that
- 25:44Speaker 4: one out there, because it because you're there, you fall
- 25:48Speaker 4: under peer pressure.
- 25:49Speaker 3: I do sometimes Shimmel deserves credit for the era though too,
- 25:52Speaker 3: as much as Lily and I think he has some
- 25:54Speaker 3: distinct uh distinct announcers.
- 25:57Speaker 4: Absolutely, like that era of s back down was insane
- 26:02Speaker 4: and to put the Tony Chimble and really anybody on
- 26:05Speaker 4: this list has such a recognizable voice that you can
- 26:09Speaker 4: equate them to.
- 26:10Speaker 5: Whatever era that they were announcing in.
- 26:13Speaker 3: Like you can even see like that from that era
- 26:15Speaker 3: of velocity and main event and like the pre shows
- 26:17Speaker 3: or the Saturday morning shows, like that's him all over
- 26:19Speaker 3: the place.
- 26:20Speaker 2: Oh. Absolutely.
- 26:21Speaker 4: Also there was a video online the man turned very
- 26:26Speaker 4: Italian very quick. He actually got he accidentally got hit
- 26:28Speaker 4: with like a shirt t shirt gun and he didn't.
- 26:32Speaker 2: There was no accident to that. They aimed the gun
- 26:36Speaker 2: at it.
- 26:36Speaker 5: Are you talking about this? You're you've seen the same video?
- 26:38Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, he Where are you saying he accident? No?
- 26:41Speaker 2: Like someone was in that guy's here and said, hey,
- 26:44Speaker 2: you know, would be really funny shoot timble.
- 26:49Speaker 5: And then he did. And Tony Chimmell. Yeah what Tony Chimmell.
- 26:53Speaker 5: I didn't think he could do.
- 26:54Speaker 2: I gotta look this video up.
- 26:56Speaker 4: It's an interesting one. It's only about a minute and
- 26:58Speaker 4: a half, two minutes. Oh wow, Yeah it's out there though.
- 27:01Speaker 4: All right, we're gonna shift gears real quick to On
- 27:04Speaker 4: this day in wrestling history. June twenty ninth, nineteen eighty six,
- 27:20Speaker 4: Nick Bockwinkle was awarded the AWA World Championship in Denver,
- 27:25Speaker 4: Colorado with a four foot win over Stan Hanson. The
- 27:28Speaker 4: reality was that Hanson had walked out on the AWA
- 27:32Speaker 4: over his loyalty to All Japan Pro Wrestling. As a
- 27:35Speaker 4: response to the perceived slight, Hanson, who was still in
- 27:39Speaker 4: possession of the title belt, laid it on his driveway,
- 27:43Speaker 4: ran it over with his truck, and mailed the remains
- 27:46Speaker 4: back to AWA owner Vern Ganya.
- 27:50Speaker 3: Wouldn't you know, love to know what happened to that belt,
- 27:51Speaker 3: like what they did with it, you know. Yeah, the
- 27:54Speaker 3: package for you Vern, Oh, thank you.
- 27:56Speaker 2: It's just I can't give this to my son.
- 28:05Speaker 4: June twenty ninth, nineteen ninety eight, the day after losing
- 28:09Speaker 4: the WWF Championship to Caine at King of the Ring
- 28:13Speaker 4: in a first Blood match, Stone Cold Steve Austin won
- 28:16Speaker 4: the title back on Rawa's War from Cleveland, Ohio. And
- 28:20Speaker 4: then finally June twenty ninth, twenty thirteen, at a TNA
- 28:25Speaker 4: Impact taping in Las Vegas, Nevada, Chris Saban defeated Austin,
- 28:29Speaker 4: Airis and Manic in a triple threat match.
- 28:32Speaker 5: To win the X Division Championship.
- 28:35Speaker 4: And we will take a quick break and when we
- 28:37Speaker 4: come back, we're gonna talk to Adam about Sternwhell Slambury.
- 28:41Speaker 7: On July fifth, stay tuned, good.
- 28:55Speaker 2: Time for more of the drill Out. Here's Mollywood Jeff.
- 28:57Speaker 5: Pager, Welcome back, ladies, gentlemen, to the Grill Out.
- 29:03Speaker 4: I'm your host, tomley Wood, Jeff Betty, and I'm joined
- 29:06Speaker 4: here with I can't say I illustrious co host doctor
- 29:13Speaker 4: Jason Likens.
- 29:14Speaker 5: The reflection of perfection.
- 29:15Speaker 2: Yes, that is your illustrious co host, and then there's
- 29:19Speaker 2: Josh hostess.
- 29:21Speaker 4: And our reigning and depending and he will he retained,
- 29:25Speaker 4: that's right, Josh called Babey.
- 29:27Speaker 5: We'll talk about that later on.
- 29:28Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 29:28Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 29:29Speaker 4: We're also joined by Adam Harris, ring announcer and co
- 29:33Speaker 4: organizer for rpw's stern Will Slamboree this Saturday, July fifth,
- 29:41Speaker 4: at three o'clock.
- 29:42Speaker 5: You guys are gonna be at Hadad Riverfront.
- 29:43Speaker 2: Park, that's right, Yeah, big deal.
- 29:45Speaker 5: Absolutely.
- 29:47Speaker 4: When we saw that you were you guys are going
- 29:48Speaker 4: to do it, there was like, oh okay, we we
- 29:51Speaker 4: we don't have to go to slack Plausa.
- 29:53Speaker 5: That's right because the past couple of years, the last.
- 29:55Speaker 3: Two years, yeah, the first two Slambre's and then we've
- 29:57Speaker 3: been doing slam Plaza. The Bishop did one before before
- 30:00Speaker 3: we did the Sternal Slammery, and then we've done two
- 30:02Speaker 3: since then. I think so this year it'll be slam
- 30:03Speaker 3: Plaza four if I'm not mistaken, but this is our
- 30:06Speaker 3: third sterminal Slambury and yeah, we're moving it down to
- 30:09Speaker 3: Hadad Riverfront Park.
- 30:10Speaker 2: We're going to put the ring right there.
- 30:11Speaker 3: In front of the stage, and so I hope the
- 30:13Speaker 3: bowl seating is going to work out really cool for
- 30:15Speaker 3: this atmosphere, you know. And I think part of the
- 30:18Speaker 3: idea was to you know, help drive some traffic to
- 30:21Speaker 3: the vendors during the day. I loved slack Plaza and
- 30:24Speaker 3: there was no hard feelings there at all. I think
- 30:26Speaker 3: the idea was to maybe just to try to concentrate
- 30:28Speaker 3: that as the kids area for a few reasons that
- 30:31Speaker 3: we don't have to go into on the Wrestling podcast,
- 30:33Speaker 3: but I think that was the main idea, is that
- 30:36Speaker 3: the kids environment. We had to kind of move a
- 30:38Speaker 3: few things to set the ring up on that one day,
- 30:40Speaker 3: you know, and that.
- 30:41Speaker 2: Makes things difficult.
- 30:42Speaker 3: And this way it'll be parent friendly and kid friendly
- 30:44Speaker 3: up there at slack Plaza. And we had so much
- 30:47Speaker 3: cool support from the vendors there on slack Plaza too.
- 30:49Speaker 3: You know, we had our slack Plaza beer, you know,
- 30:51Speaker 3: the Slambury shandy. So shout out to all of those
- 30:55Speaker 3: organizations that helped us out. But again thanks to Gino's,
- 30:58Speaker 3: who I should mention our sponsor. This year, we're going
- 31:00Speaker 3: to do it down by the Levee and try it
- 31:01Speaker 3: out down there this year. I think so yeah, especially
- 31:05Speaker 3: if the canopy is closed during that time of day,
- 31:08Speaker 3: it's actually the maximum amount of shade that's going to
- 31:10Speaker 3: be down there. And then people will be able to
- 31:13Speaker 3: meet and greet with Buff Bagwell, our special guests. Everybody
- 31:16Speaker 3: knows Buff the stuff, the multi time tag team champion.
- 31:19Speaker 3: A lot of people don't even remember, but he was
- 31:21Speaker 3: a tag champion along with Shane Douglass there on the
- 31:23Speaker 3: tail end of the WCW days. I'm sure a lot
- 31:26Speaker 3: of people have forgotten that, and maybe rightfully so, but
- 31:29Speaker 3: the records still show it. So Buff Bagwell is going
- 31:32Speaker 3: to be in the house at the Stern will Slambury
- 31:34Speaker 3: July fifth and three pm bell time. We're gonna do
- 31:37Speaker 3: a meet and greet with Buff probably around five thirty
- 31:39Speaker 3: after the last match is where we're going to do
- 31:41Speaker 3: our photo ops with Buff Bagwell, and then six o'clock
- 31:44Speaker 3: is when the live music starts up on the boulevard.
- 31:47Speaker 2: I'll be honest, I feel like I have to get
- 31:51Speaker 2: my picture with Buff Bagwell because of what happened when
- 31:55Speaker 2: I was a kid. Let's go, let's hear it. Okay,
- 31:58Speaker 2: So most everyone has a Buff Bagwell story.
- 32:01Speaker 3: Man.
- 32:01Speaker 2: He's like universally. Yeah, so they Charleston would always do
- 32:06Speaker 2: like a kid's classic show or something, I don't remember
- 32:10Speaker 2: what it was called Fox Kids Expo, that's it, Fox
- 32:12Speaker 2: Kids Expo. And my brother and I we were huge
- 32:16Speaker 2: Patriot fans and Patriot was teaming with Buff Bagwell the wrestler,
- 32:21Speaker 2: not the football team or anything, but the wrestler, the wrestler,
- 32:24Speaker 2: and so we went up to Buff Bagwell, who was
- 32:29Speaker 2: Marcus Alexander Bagwell at the time, and we asked him,
- 32:31Speaker 2: were like, hey, is the Patriot going to be here?
- 32:33Speaker 2: And he was like no no. It was like, but
- 32:35Speaker 2: do you do you want a picture with me? And
- 32:37Speaker 2: we were like no, no. We just turned around and
- 32:39Speaker 2: walked away. Hey tell the Patriots.
- 32:42Speaker 3: Hey, you really want to meet the Patriot stars and stripes.
- 32:46Speaker 2: Man that was right there for me to was Harlem
- 32:49Speaker 2: Heat at that too. Have you ever heard about that.
- 32:50Speaker 3: I feel like somebody met Harlem Heat one year at
- 32:53Speaker 3: that Fox Kids.
- 32:54Speaker 5: Expo or something.
- 32:55Speaker 2: I know. Uh, Dustin Rhodes and Johnny b. Bad were okay, cool,
- 33:00Speaker 2: cool and very cool. Alex Wright was I remember that.
- 33:04Speaker 5: That was the German guy right there dancing kid.
- 33:10Speaker 2: Yeah, definitely definitely who later became burder Lynn and there
- 33:13Speaker 2: we go.
- 33:14Speaker 3: Sorry to go off topic there, but no anyway, Yeah,
- 33:17Speaker 3: so I hope, well I'll get a buff Bagwell story
- 33:19Speaker 3: in before the end of the show.
- 33:21Speaker 5: Yeah, I hope.
- 33:21Speaker 3: I don't have any buff Bagwell st Well, then you
- 33:23Speaker 3: have to come to Sturwall Slammery.
- 33:26Speaker 2: Now you can get one.
- 33:27Speaker 5: Yes, mine, buff bug Wall stores that.
- 33:29Speaker 6: Like when w W used to come town, we would
- 33:32Speaker 6: get backstage and get autographs. I was a kid and
- 33:34Speaker 6: still believed in the k fabe. He dissed Charleston. I
- 33:38Speaker 6: did not get his autograph.
- 33:40Speaker 2: Perfect, that's perfect. No, I don't want to. Did you
- 33:44Speaker 2: hear what he said about Charleston? I lived here. Perfect,
- 33:48Speaker 2: That's where I'm from. Jerk. I'll make him apologize to
- 33:53Speaker 2: you in person.
- 33:54Speaker 4: Yeah, so we already have two like buff back will things.
- 33:57Speaker 4: It's like twenty thirty years in the making over.
- 34:00Speaker 2: Yeah, definitely, definitely.
- 34:01Speaker 3: Well, Hey, listen, he did an appearance that a lot
- 34:03Speaker 3: of people might remember at the Charlestontown Center mall, and
- 34:07Speaker 3: that was sponsored by the West Virginia Lottery And they
- 34:11Speaker 3: actually did a WCW lottery ticket back then, and so
- 34:16Speaker 3: the lottery was in brought in Buff Bagwell, Rick Flair
- 34:22Speaker 3: and then also Lex Luger and Miss Elizabeth and they
- 34:25Speaker 3: did a signing at the West Virginia Lottery Offices over
- 34:28Speaker 3: on the top floor at that time. It was on
- 34:29Speaker 3: the top floor I think of the of the Charlestontown
- 34:32Speaker 3: Center mall. So I do have some photos, including a
- 34:35Speaker 3: friend of my friend, Dustin from ASW there's a photo
- 34:37Speaker 3: of him with like Buff Bagwell and I guess this
- 34:39Speaker 3: was ninety nine, I think because Buff and Live were
- 34:43Speaker 3: a thing at that time, so it was in that
- 34:45Speaker 3: area whenever he was like the total package and whatever
- 34:47Speaker 3: time period that was.
- 34:49Speaker 4: See talking about all these stories of professional wrestling here
- 34:53Speaker 4: in Charleston. I've heard you say this before, adding, yeah, yeah,
- 34:55Speaker 4: Charleston is.
- 34:56Speaker 5: A wrestling town.
- 34:57Speaker 2: Is it not completely? Yeah, for sure it is.
- 35:00Speaker 5: It has slept on quite a bit with people.
- 35:02Speaker 4: And that leads me to like another question, And I've
- 35:05Speaker 4: asked you this before off the air when we've seen
- 35:07Speaker 4: each other at events, But I want to know how
- 35:11Speaker 4: healthy do you think wrestling is in our area in
- 35:14Speaker 4: the state in general?
- 35:16Speaker 2: Oh?
- 35:16Speaker 3: Man, I think it's very healthy, and I think that's
- 35:18Speaker 3: part of one of the reasons we were asked to
- 35:20Speaker 3: do sternwill Slamboree during such a high profile event like
- 35:23Speaker 3: the Regatta. You know, I meant everybody knows about the concerts,
- 35:26Speaker 3: you know, and the fair food and the circus rides
- 35:29Speaker 3: and everything, and so it's a very high profile thing
- 35:32Speaker 3: for the city of Charleston to say, Wow, we need
- 35:34Speaker 3: to be highlighting professional wrestling.
- 35:35Speaker 2: There's this really exciting.
- 35:38Speaker 3: Scene that happens all throughout the state, not just in
- 35:40Speaker 3: Charleston obviously, and in fact, most of the wrestling that
- 35:42Speaker 3: happens besides Conquest. You know, they're the ones who run
- 35:44Speaker 3: most locally for the most part, but you've got Ac
- 35:47Speaker 3: Dub who runs throughout the state. They've been doing all
- 35:50Speaker 3: the B Dubs shows that I've become immensely popular. I've
- 35:53Speaker 3: a told news the other day, Dude, B Dubs.
- 35:55Speaker 2: Season is over.
- 35:56Speaker 1: Man.
- 35:56Speaker 3: The crowd is reacting to this. They talk about it.
- 35:59Speaker 3: They're like, it's B Dubs, you know, we just kicked
- 36:01Speaker 3: that off last week. And then you've got Gary who
- 36:04Speaker 3: runs ASW largely out of Boone County in Madison area,
- 36:07Speaker 3: but then also runs the BASHI in Beckley, which has
- 36:09Speaker 3: become this huge you know, WrestleMania style event that.
- 36:12Speaker 2: Happens one day in June every year.
- 36:14Speaker 3: And then we also work with Powerslam Academy, who have
- 36:16Speaker 3: helped train some of the talent that are coming up
- 36:19Speaker 3: now and making a lot of waves in.
- 36:21Speaker 2: The wrestling business.
- 36:22Speaker 3: You guys have done a great job of talking about Grappalacha,
- 36:26Speaker 3: which was produced by Troy Rank and another guest on
- 36:28Speaker 3: your show, But three of the stars from that are
- 36:31Speaker 3: going to be featured heavily. At least three or more
- 36:34Speaker 3: are going to be featured heavily at Sternwell Slamboree. So
- 36:38Speaker 3: I would say it's as strong as it's ever been.
- 36:41Speaker 4: Absolutely, I think. Like so, it was actually at one
- 36:44Speaker 4: of your shows.
- 36:45Speaker 5: I think it was slam Pausa may have been. Wait
- 36:48Speaker 5: was at the slack pause.
- 36:49Speaker 4: I know that I went up to the vendor and
- 36:51Speaker 4: she was from Florida and we're talking and everything.
- 36:54Speaker 5: I'm just started to get some drinks and she's like,
- 36:56Speaker 5: I've never never been around this before. She's like, this
- 36:59Speaker 5: is crazy.
- 37:00Speaker 4: Is this Does this happen around here on a regular
- 37:01Speaker 4: Rasism like, oh yeah, yeah, it's it's all over the
- 37:03Speaker 4: place here. She's like, yeah, I don't experience this in
- 37:06Speaker 4: Florida at all, and then talking with Troy for the
- 37:10Speaker 4: Grapple Action interview, which you know, go back and watch it.
- 37:12Speaker 4: Also watch Grapple at.
- 37:14Speaker 2: You definitely check it out.
- 37:15Speaker 3: It's a it's an amazing a good prepper for the
- 37:17Speaker 3: storm will Slambourrie and it's on YouTube.
- 37:18Speaker 2: You can find it right there.
- 37:19Speaker 4: I saw y'all post that on your Facebook page, yeah,
- 37:23Speaker 4: to tell people like, hey, watch this to get it
- 37:25Speaker 4: and I and I think it's a great introduction, yeah,
- 37:28Speaker 4: to the independent wrestling scene around here. So with with
- 37:34Speaker 4: that being said, like talking with Troy, he's from Colorado,
- 37:38Speaker 4: same thing.
- 37:39Speaker 5: We don't have this out in Colorado.
- 37:41Speaker 4: I've never really seen it like this, So it's it's
- 37:44Speaker 4: it's interesting that in the state of West Virginia it's
- 37:48Speaker 4: so healthy. And I'm going to pass off the question
- 37:51Speaker 4: to the doctor of Ultimo dragonology.
- 37:58Speaker 5: Is micah RpW Women's Champion that's right, among others?
- 38:04Speaker 4: Among others, is she Ultimo Dragon or is Ultimate Dragon
- 38:09Speaker 4: inspiration for her?
- 38:10Speaker 6: He's a power Slam person right too.
- 38:12Speaker 3: Yeah, definitely she had Yeah, she definitely came through the
- 38:13Speaker 3: Power Slam Academy with Chance Prophet.
- 38:16Speaker 2: I can without a shadow of a doubt. Tell you
- 38:22Speaker 2: she is not Ultimo Dragon, but she is very good. Absolutely,
- 38:29Speaker 2: But there's really still only one old Listen, you can
- 38:33Speaker 2: be cool, but you will never be Ultimo Dragon holding
- 38:37Speaker 2: twelve titles at one time cool. That's something I've had
- 38:42Speaker 2: to come to terms with in my own life. But Adam,
- 38:47Speaker 2: I I want to ask you what you know since
- 38:49Speaker 2: mentioned grap Lasha, what what did you think about grap Palacha. Well,
- 38:56Speaker 2: I was in it, so my mom would have loved it,
- 38:57Speaker 2: no doubt. I thought. I thought it came across very well.
- 39:00Speaker 3: And like I said, I think it is a good primer,
- 39:02Speaker 3: like if anybody's like curious about it. And as a fact,
- 39:04Speaker 3: I said, had someone come up to me at the
- 39:06Speaker 3: Conquest show afterwards, a professional in Charleston came to me
- 39:10Speaker 3: and said, Hey, I saw you.
- 39:11Speaker 2: On grapple Atch. I thought that was really well done.
- 39:13Speaker 3: That's what made us come here, you know, they were
- 39:15Speaker 3: they saw enough in that documentary to think I'm going
- 39:17Speaker 3: to buy tickets to a local show, go to Quantum
- 39:20Speaker 3: Sports in Kanasas City and hang out and drink some
- 39:23Speaker 3: beer and watch an awesome wrestling show. And believe me,
- 39:26Speaker 3: it won't be their last time. You know, after the show,
- 39:29Speaker 3: they were just thrilled with how fun it was. And
- 39:31Speaker 3: you know, I went to wrestling as a kid for
- 39:33Speaker 3: the first time, but to this day, like there's plenty
- 39:35Speaker 3: of adults who are going to come to their first
- 39:37Speaker 3: wrestling show at one of these public outdoor events, you know,
- 39:40Speaker 3: and say what you want.
- 39:41Speaker 2: About a free show or whatever it's like. To me,
- 39:44Speaker 2: that's a key entry point for fans. You have no
- 39:47Speaker 2: excuse then exactly, yes, it can't be a well I
- 39:52Speaker 2: really need that extra twenty dollars a month. It's a
- 39:55Speaker 2: free show, exactly exactly.
- 39:56Speaker 3: And even if even if it's at BWS, you may
- 39:58Speaker 3: be able to you can afford dinner that way and
- 40:00Speaker 3: go and sit on the patio and enjoy the wrestling
- 40:02Speaker 3: and still get dinner. And as you guys have talked
- 40:05Speaker 3: about on the show, there's a lot's been said about
- 40:07Speaker 3: the demise of house shows. Yeah, you know, there was
- 40:11Speaker 3: a time when Charleston would have a couple at least
- 40:15Speaker 3: house shows every year or every two years.
- 40:17Speaker 2: It seemed like they were coming all the time. And
- 40:19Speaker 2: when was the last time they were here?
- 40:21Speaker 5: Exactly? I mean the last honestly with WW I couldn't remember.
- 40:26Speaker 3: It was definitely when Cody was here. Was twenty one
- 40:28Speaker 3: or twenty two, but that was the last time, and
- 40:30Speaker 3: I remember because I had to work, so I wasn't
- 40:31Speaker 3: even able to go.
- 40:32Speaker 4: Yeah, and I think the last like house show that
- 40:35Speaker 4: I actually went to in person, What's with Josh?
- 40:39Speaker 5: It was SmackDown.
- 40:40Speaker 4: Because Josh and I both were amer Corps members at
- 40:42Speaker 4: the time, we were doing our service project around Charleston.
- 40:46Speaker 4: We were going around cleaning up the streets and stuff,
- 40:48Speaker 4: and we just so happened playing it to where we
- 40:51Speaker 4: could go by the box office.
- 40:55Speaker 2: Smart fans in the right way.
- 40:56Speaker 5: Yeah, get our tickets and then come back later that night.
- 40:59Speaker 2: For the Yeah, I love that. That's great.
- 41:02Speaker 4: But yeah, like it is, uh Grapple actcha is such?
- 41:06Speaker 4: Is such a great introduction and just go support local wrestling.
- 41:10Speaker 2: Definitely, Yeah, definitely.
- 41:11Speaker 3: And again kind of back to the Regatta thing is
- 41:13Speaker 3: it's like people that may not know where to look
- 41:16Speaker 3: for to find a wrestling show, or maybe people that
- 41:19Speaker 3: will see this because it's been shared by the Regatta
- 41:22Speaker 3: page or but because they see it on the schedule.
- 41:24Speaker 3: To me, that offers Okay, well, I know what Regatta
- 41:26Speaker 3: is so this is going to be I'll understand the atmosphere.
- 41:29Speaker 3: I've been to the Levee before. I know what goes
- 41:31Speaker 3: on there. I understand the environment where maybe you don't
- 41:33Speaker 3: know what it's going to be like at some other location.
- 41:35Speaker 3: At least this is like a comfortable entry point for
- 41:38Speaker 3: a casual fan, which gets talked about a lot. Also,
- 41:40Speaker 3: you know that casual fan that I'm not sure if
- 41:42Speaker 3: they actually exist or not. But if there are casual fans,
- 41:45Speaker 3: they're going to show up at Live on the Levee
- 41:47Speaker 3: for Sternwill Slamberrey, and even if they only stay for
- 41:50Speaker 3: one match, that might be more live wrestling than they've
- 41:53Speaker 3: seen in their entire lives. And I think even with
- 41:55Speaker 3: that right exposure, and even if they don't become lifelong
- 41:58Speaker 3: fans or anything, I mean, I could hope to make
- 42:00Speaker 3: you know, the next Jason Likens fan, you know, But
- 42:03Speaker 3: and that may happen. You know, we don't know what
- 42:05Speaker 3: kid is out there that's been to a slam Plaza
- 42:07Speaker 3: or a Sternwall Slamboery, and so I hope that, you know,
- 42:10Speaker 3: ultimately they'll find something to fall in love with.
- 42:12Speaker 2: So how how did regard to pro Wrestling begin.
- 42:18Speaker 3: It was it's kind of an umbrella organization, and I
- 42:20Speaker 3: use that word very loosely organization. I mean, we just
- 42:23Speaker 3: kind of wanted to put an umbrella over top of
- 42:26Speaker 3: what we were trying to do, which was highlight those
- 42:28Speaker 3: four organizations that I mentioned earlier. You know, it's it's
- 42:31Speaker 3: kind of like an acronym soup a little bit, but
- 42:33Speaker 3: asw ACW and then Power Slam and Conquest because really
- 42:37Speaker 3: we just want to feature the talent that works in
- 42:39Speaker 3: those groups and sort of you know, trickle down the
- 42:44Speaker 3: attendance into those shows that happened all year round, you know.
- 42:47Speaker 3: And so our goal was not to run ten shows
- 42:49Speaker 3: a year or start running monthly or anything like that.
- 42:51Speaker 3: Our goal, if there is one, is to basically provide
- 42:54Speaker 3: some some high level, hopefully high quality, free professional wrestling
- 42:59Speaker 3: at what has turned in to be like festival adjacent events,
- 43:03Speaker 3: you know. So we've also added the Market Mayhem, which
- 43:05Speaker 3: happens after the Green Chili shoot out at the Capitol Market,
- 43:08Speaker 3: which again is an awesome thing because that's for charity.
- 43:10Speaker 3: There's a built in audience and guess what, they're gonna
- 43:12Speaker 3: be curious. There's some beer sales going on. You know,
- 43:15Speaker 3: it happens in March around Saint Patrick's so a cool location.
- 43:18Speaker 3: It's such a cool location. And to me, that's like
- 43:20Speaker 3: the most charming part of doing these shows.
- 43:22Speaker 2: I love it, you know.
- 43:23Speaker 3: I was in Logan last night for the Freedom Fest.
- 43:25Speaker 3: I did a beat up show on Thursday night down
- 43:27Speaker 3: in Mount Hope, Man. But Mount Hope, you're up on
- 43:29Speaker 3: top of the hill up here. There's literally mountain sides
- 43:31Speaker 3: over there, you know, and you can see the Interstate
- 43:33Speaker 3: going by and the sun starts setting down over the hill,
- 43:36Speaker 3: Like give me a break. It's cinematic, you know, and
- 43:38Speaker 3: I love that. I love outdoor shows for that reason.
- 43:42Speaker 3: And again it's more so it's welcoming.
- 43:44Speaker 1: You know.
- 43:44Speaker 3: It's an outdoor people are gonna wander by, They're gonna
- 43:46Speaker 3: hear like, what what is that going on? You know,
- 43:48Speaker 3: and then you hear what people hit the ring and
- 43:50Speaker 3: it goes throughout.
- 43:51Speaker 2: You know, it's gonna be great.
- 43:53Speaker 5: I do think that, like.
- 43:55Speaker 4: Special venues is one thing that like some wrestling promotions
- 43:59Speaker 4: are staying away from it, and I think it's such
- 44:01Speaker 4: a unique thing to do that. Like for example, you
- 44:05Speaker 4: had it was Madman Pondo, it was the main event
- 44:08Speaker 4: for I think it was slam pause. I keep going
- 44:10Speaker 4: back to that same time I had had the conversation
- 44:13Speaker 4: with that lady.
- 44:13Speaker 2: That was last September.
- 44:14Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, so last September and the sun had went
- 44:18Speaker 4: down and then the lights came on, and I remember
- 44:20Speaker 4: sending pictures to both jos and Jason and saying, oh
- 44:24Speaker 4: my god, like this looks so cool right now, Like
- 44:27Speaker 4: it was such a cool atmosphere, cool visual going on.
- 44:30Speaker 3: Yeah, and just like with concerts, like people loosen up
- 44:32Speaker 3: as the sun goes down right darker it gets the
- 44:34Speaker 3: more people feel free and they get more involved with it.
- 44:36Speaker 2: And yeah, that Pondo match was insane.
- 44:38Speaker 6: Yeah, so you kind of touched on a little bit.
- 44:40Speaker 6: So you guys currently do three shows per year roughly, Yeah,
- 44:44Speaker 6: do you want to do any more than that?
- 44:45Speaker 2: Are you're pretty good with this?
- 44:46Speaker 3: Free Me personally, I don't know if I have the
- 44:49Speaker 3: time or capacity to do anymore. And that is in
- 44:52Speaker 3: respect to all promoters who do this year round, you know,
- 44:54Speaker 3: the Gary Dammern's of the world and the Mooses of
- 44:56Speaker 3: the world, and the Derek Sours and Chance Profits.
- 44:58Speaker 2: Because it's a lot of work. Man.
- 45:00Speaker 3: People will have no idea and you guys work in radio,
- 45:02Speaker 3: you guys have been in promotions. You know what it's
- 45:04Speaker 3: like because it's a crew, it's a team. You know,
- 45:07Speaker 3: no one person can do it themselves. And so yeah,
- 45:11Speaker 3: it's it's it's about all I can I could possibly
- 45:13Speaker 3: withstand myself personally, especially with a full time job.
- 45:17Speaker 2: As long as I still have one.
- 45:19Speaker 3: I think I would love to do more if I
- 45:21Speaker 3: had the time, but like I try to, like, I
- 45:24Speaker 3: really want what we to do to have a certain
- 45:25Speaker 3: level of quality, and I feel like if we try
- 45:27Speaker 3: to do more, then that'll immediately go down, or at
- 45:29Speaker 3: least eventually we'll go down. And so I like the
- 45:32Speaker 3: festival adjacent things, like we have a couple of cool
- 45:34Speaker 3: partners that'll keep driving in some new traffic. And if
- 45:38Speaker 3: all those people, like if fifty people show up and
- 45:41Speaker 3: two of them go to a show or you know that,
- 45:43Speaker 3: that to me is a win, you know, and they
- 45:44Speaker 3: may never come again, but if they see it the
- 45:46Speaker 3: next year, they go, Man, we were at that last year.
- 45:48Speaker 3: That was really fun, and a lot of people showed
- 45:50Speaker 3: up this year at the Market Mayhem show for that reason.
- 45:53Speaker 4: So again, go back to y'all's Facebook page is Troy
- 45:58Speaker 4: Parker going to receive rematch.
- 46:02Speaker 2: Baylor. Do you think we should get into it? We can.
- 46:05Speaker 3: I promised to announce our first match on the grill
- 46:08Speaker 3: Out exclusive exclusive.
- 46:09Speaker 2: Content here there you go.
- 46:11Speaker 3: Yeah, we kind of have been teasing it on our
- 46:13Speaker 3: Facebook page because again we want to do shows for
- 46:16Speaker 3: the casual fan, but also there's been some story here.
- 46:19Speaker 3: You know, this all dates back to the very first
- 46:21Speaker 3: Sternwell Slambourrie because at our first event, we wanted to
- 46:24Speaker 3: crown the first ever Regatta Pro Wrestling champion. And if
- 46:28Speaker 3: you guys were there or anybody that was there, you
- 46:31Speaker 3: remember in the finals of that match it was Josh
- 46:33Speaker 3: Williams and Troy Parker, and Troy Parker actually won that match,
- 46:39Speaker 3: but it's the current Regatta Pro Champion, Bishop Baylor, who
- 46:42Speaker 3: executed some questionable contractual clause that gave him an immediate
- 46:48Speaker 3: match against Troy to follow. And so Troy, you know,
- 46:53Speaker 3: as the brave fighter that he is, accepted that challenge
- 46:57Speaker 3: and unfortunately was basically you know, screwed out of the
- 47:00Speaker 3: title and Bishop Baylor became the second ever Regatta Pro
- 47:05Speaker 3: Wrestling chance.
- 47:06Speaker 2: How can you say questionable though, I mean, if it's
- 47:09Speaker 2: in the Fine Prime. Well, you're right, right.
- 47:11Speaker 3: I mean, look, the city manager, Ben ben Mischo was there.
- 47:14Speaker 3: He looked at the contract and he verified. I mean
- 47:16Speaker 3: he was like, yeah, I mean it's in.
- 47:18Speaker 2: There, so anything the better, main one.
- 47:22Speaker 3: I mean, he was looking out for himself for sure,
- 47:25Speaker 3: and since then Bishop's had somewhat of a change of heart.
- 47:27Speaker 3: You know, a lot of cheers for him now when
- 47:28Speaker 3: he comes out. However, I will say he's always been
- 47:31Speaker 3: the kind of guy who's going to do what it
- 47:33Speaker 3: takes to get the job done, and at this point
- 47:35Speaker 3: he's held the Regatta Pro title for over seven hundred days. Meanwhile,
- 47:40Speaker 3: we had a match at Market Mayhem. It was a
- 47:42Speaker 3: six way scramble or actually it was a four way
- 47:44Speaker 3: scramble for a chance to challenge for the Regatta Pro title,
- 47:48Speaker 3: and that match was won by Troy Parker. So Troy
- 47:52Speaker 3: elected to cash in, if you will, he elected to
- 47:56Speaker 3: sign his match for the Sternwell Slambury in a rematch.
- 48:01Speaker 5: However, call back to our first segment.
- 48:06Speaker 2: Yeah, that's right to the great fink.
- 48:08Speaker 3: However, at that same match at Market Mayhem, Troy kind
- 48:12Speaker 3: of snuck the win out from under no Array, who
- 48:15Speaker 3: had just delivered his famous spinebuster and was due to
- 48:19Speaker 3: pick up that win. And actually Troy was able to
- 48:21Speaker 3: get Noah out of the ring and distract him fast
- 48:24Speaker 3: enough to actually get the pin, and so no Array
- 48:27Speaker 3: had a justifiable gripe after the match, you know, compounded
- 48:32Speaker 3: by the fact that Bishop is the one who took
- 48:34Speaker 3: the Boone County Championship away from no Array. And there's
- 48:38Speaker 3: some questionable if you ask Noah under some questionable standards
- 48:41Speaker 3: there as well of scenario.
- 48:43Speaker 2: Rather, so.
- 48:46Speaker 3: It's been signed and confirmed that the actual title match
- 48:49Speaker 3: is going to be on the line.
- 48:50Speaker 2: Bishop Baylor will.
- 48:51Speaker 3: Defend against Troy Parker and against no Array in a
- 48:55Speaker 3: triple threat mane of o match.
- 48:58Speaker 2: Okay, there you have it, ladies and gentlemen.
- 49:00Speaker 3: Guys featured prominently in Grappaalacha as we mentioned earlier, and
- 49:04Speaker 3: three of the hottest stars on the West Virginia independent
- 49:06Speaker 3: scene and beyond. And so we're gonna see who comes
- 49:09Speaker 3: out on top for the Regatta Championship.
- 49:11Speaker 6: Fun fact, Nolla Ray is my third cousin.
- 49:14Speaker 2: Whoa, I've never met him, but are you from Big
- 49:16Speaker 2: Ugly no.
- 49:17Speaker 4: Okay, oh, there you go, Ladies and gentlemen, Sternwell Slambury

- 49:35Speaker 4: buff bags Bagwell, he's the stuff yeap just can't get enough.
