- 0:08Speaker 1: This is me eater podcast coming at you shirtless, severely
- 0:13Speaker 1: bug bitten in my case, underwear listening podcast. You can't
- 0:18Speaker 1: predict anything presented by on X. Hunt creators are the
- 0:22Speaker 1: most comprehensive digital mapping system for hunters. Download the Hunt
- 0:26Speaker 1: app from the iTunes or Google play store. Nor where
- 0:29Speaker 1: you stand with on x. Cal was trying to show
- 0:37Speaker 1: off his catfish grabbing scar, which may not be showing
- 0:42Speaker 1: off because it shows a lack of technique. You weren't
- 0:45Speaker 1: showing it off. You were demonstrating, illustrating. I'm part of
- 0:48Speaker 1: the club. Did it? Did he spin on you? Yes? Yes, yeah,
- 0:53Speaker 1: and spun hard and fast enough to where the pain
- 0:58Speaker 1: that I got was from my elbow small backing into
- 1:00Speaker 1: the tub. Being there, done that and was in the
- 1:03Speaker 1: tub into the tub. Well, these guys, they so they mark,
- 1:10Speaker 1: they put a little Yeah, they mark natural nesting sites.
- 1:13Speaker 1: But then they also get super sneaky and hide old
- 1:18Speaker 1: cast iron tubs that they cut a nine. You calling, well,
- 1:25Speaker 1: I think it's illegal in some place. I'm not calling
- 1:27Speaker 1: coul liar. I'm just telling me it's a better way
- 1:29Speaker 1: of doing it, and that's the way that we do it.
- 1:31Speaker 1: We build wooden boxes. It looks kind of like a colfin.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Why a cast there tub inverted? It's heavy yep, so
- 1:40Speaker 1: flipped yep. So the the bottoms on top pointing towards
- 1:45Speaker 1: the sky, and what you gotta call a little entrance
- 1:48Speaker 1: hole in there. They cut a nine by eleven hole.
- 1:51Speaker 1: That's all it takes for him to get into. And
- 1:52Speaker 1: I said, why is nine by eleven? He's like, well,
- 1:54Speaker 1: it's a standard sheet of paper, so everybody knows the measurement.
- 1:58Speaker 1: And a big half, a big snapping turtle can't get
- 2:03Speaker 1: in there. That's right. Okay, Now, how would cal have
- 2:06Speaker 1: done it if he wasn't stupid? Well, from what from
- 2:09Speaker 1: where I'm seeing the scar Yet he's just um crap
- 2:12Speaker 1: out of luck because you actually got past his lip.
- 2:16Speaker 1: He swallowed you with what he did. Uh, you're screed. Course,
- 2:23Speaker 1: the farthest you've ever gotten your arm down in one
- 2:26Speaker 1: Uh not me, but one of my cohorts that was
- 2:29Speaker 1: with us literally swallowed him up to his shoulder. He
- 2:33Speaker 1: was ninety seven pound blue m And we we do
- 2:38Speaker 1: it a little bit different than some. I say we
- 2:40Speaker 1: is actually a gentleman by the name of Mike Willoughby
- 2:43Speaker 1: who carries me who's been on some of the reality.
- 2:46Speaker 1: He carries you in his boat. I'm not that old yet.
- 2:52Speaker 1: I can still get around. My god, i'd come through
- 2:54Speaker 1: the door. But we have spodders on each side, so
- 2:59Speaker 1: that really, if you do get into trouble, someone's always there.
- 3:03Speaker 1: And it took this boy under, completely under, and two
- 3:07Speaker 1: people were trying to hold his head up, and they're
- 3:09Speaker 1: going to let go, let go, let go, And as
- 3:12Speaker 1: his head would come up, he put his head up.
- 3:13Speaker 1: He going I can't, I can't, right back down again.
- 3:17Speaker 1: That happened three times, and then when he finally got
- 3:21Speaker 1: his arm out, he turned around and looked and says,
- 3:24Speaker 1: blocked the hole. And you're seeing blood going down his arm.
- 3:30Speaker 1: And we're talking to ninety seven pound blue. Blue is
- 3:33Speaker 1: a mean sucker, is what he is. Cafish catfish. Yeah,
- 3:39Speaker 1: mean catfish. You know what I mean. He's gonna get along.
- 3:41Speaker 1: I can already see it. Uh, But they blocked the hole.
- 3:45Speaker 1: He went back, um, got a little bit of breath
- 3:48Speaker 1: and said, uh, okay, here I come, and we're going
- 3:50Speaker 1: we need to get you the doctor. He goes when
- 3:53Speaker 1: he said, blocked the hold, and he means so the
- 3:54Speaker 1: catfish can't drag him back into the hole, or dragging
- 3:57Speaker 1: get himself back into the hole. No, so that the
- 3:59Speaker 1: catfish couldn't get out. You take your feet and you
- 4:02Speaker 1: stick in the hole to block the hole, uh, to
- 4:06Speaker 1: keep the fish from coming out. Because see, now you've
- 4:08Speaker 1: got him mad. Now he knows that something's trying to
- 4:11Speaker 1: catch him, because he still was intent on catching it.
- 4:13Speaker 1: He did took him over to the boat that the
- 4:16Speaker 1: old cotton scales waitium ninety seven pounds released him since
- 4:20Speaker 1: not carving the doctor is it kind of just like
- 4:24Speaker 1: I feel like grabbing It's just like exhibitionism, right, It's
- 4:27Speaker 1: kind of like no one's doing it to get catfish.
- 4:30Speaker 1: People just doing it to be like I grab the catfish. Look.
- 4:33Speaker 1: It's like it's like it's like waite white look right here, Yeah,
- 4:39Speaker 1: big old gut. Do you think I'm gonna be throwing
- 4:42Speaker 1: a good what I call the caviar or the south
- 4:45Speaker 1: which is a flathead. I'm going to keep me a
- 4:47Speaker 1: mess of fish, and I'll really and most of the
- 4:50Speaker 1: time we keep the males and release the female, and
- 4:55Speaker 1: the mail will go up in the hole. Oh yeah,
- 4:57Speaker 1: the mail'll be up in there. Sometimes you'll have to
- 4:59Speaker 1: you'll have a male in a female. So you guys
- 5:01Speaker 1: just keep the males and you don't then you're not Uh,
- 5:03Speaker 1: you still got all your spawners, right, because that is
- 5:06Speaker 1: what they are doing. They are laying their eggs inside
- 5:08Speaker 1: of these wooden boxes. But it's not like the most
- 5:11Speaker 1: productive way to get a fish. It depends on who
- 5:14Speaker 1: you're going with, h and where they're at on a
- 5:19Speaker 1: on a good day, if you've got twenty boxes out,
- 5:24Speaker 1: seven or eight fish running newwhere from twenty to forty
- 5:27Speaker 1: pounds is average, what's the best time of year for that? Uh?
- 5:31Speaker 1: There is actually a season in the state of Mississippi,
- 5:34Speaker 1: so the coincides with the spawn right correct about June
- 5:39Speaker 1: June fourteenth. You need to be there if you're not scared.
- 5:47Speaker 1: Not scared, Okay, I'm gonna talk to Calfari, gonna find
- 5:51Speaker 1: out find out what he did or didn't do. It
- 5:54Speaker 1: is I opening, man, I thought it amazing. It's it's
- 5:59Speaker 1: just kind of great. You by it's crazy, it's wild,
- 6:05Speaker 1: I mean all the things. It's like, the water is
- 6:08Speaker 1: very warm. You can't see in the water at all.
- 6:12Speaker 1: I wore a mask, which I think did look around well,
- 6:15Speaker 1: just mentally I think it helps to have your eyes open.
- 6:19Speaker 1: Oh but you can't see at all, you know. But yeah,
- 6:24Speaker 1: so you you know, it's not like shocking cool refreshing
- 6:27Speaker 1: water or my situation wasn't you know, You're just like
- 6:29Speaker 1: wrapped in the warm towel. It's like primordial feel too,
- 6:34Speaker 1: very claustrophobic. And then you get in there and you're
- 6:37Speaker 1: feeling around into nothing and then all of a sudden
- 6:40Speaker 1: something worm like bites you, you know, not in a
- 6:44Speaker 1: friendly sort of testing you out sort of way. You know.
- 6:48Speaker 1: It's like not nibbling, No, it is like smash. Now
- 6:52Speaker 1: when they're doing that, they're defending the nest, right, correct,
- 6:56Speaker 1: that's what they're not. They're not trying to feed, No,
- 6:59Speaker 1: what what it is. It's like uh, smaller fish, blue
- 7:03Speaker 1: gel bram stuff like that will come into the nest
- 7:06Speaker 1: and try to eat the eggs. So what they're doing
- 7:08Speaker 1: is is they are protecting that nest. And when that
- 7:11Speaker 1: hand goes in and there's a proper way. And I
- 7:14Speaker 1: can promise you this, The boys that I would carry
- 7:16Speaker 1: you with are extremely good, and we'll coach you and
- 7:21Speaker 1: tell you everything you do or don't want to do.
- 7:25Speaker 1: How did a turkey collar. Get on catfishing well, because
- 7:29Speaker 1: because the cow showing off his arm, now just demonstrate
- 7:31Speaker 1: his arm. But here, here's here's the thing you haven't
- 7:33Speaker 1: explained you don't like. It seems to me that the
- 7:37Speaker 1: bathtub thing you be limited about how many tubs you
- 7:41Speaker 1: could round up. Well, if I might interject, in the
- 7:45Speaker 1: old days, they would use old hot water heaters. They
- 7:49Speaker 1: would use uh bass tubs, which all that stuff is
- 7:53Speaker 1: now illegal. Oh, you're not supposed to, at least in
- 7:58Speaker 1: the state of Mississippi useing you to lies out because
- 8:00Speaker 1: they don't deteriorate. That's the reason why we use wood,
- 8:04Speaker 1: because over a period of time the woods is gonna
- 8:07Speaker 1: rock and deteriorate. Now there is another group of guys
- 8:10Speaker 1: that go strictly and natural stuff. I'm out, I don't
- 8:14Speaker 1: do that. You never know when there could be a beaver,
- 8:17Speaker 1: a big logger head turtle, you know, so on so
- 8:20Speaker 1: and so forth. Uh, then they'll back into a beaver den,
- 8:24Speaker 1: like the entrance to a beaver den. How about this
- 8:27Speaker 1: a big cypress stump. I believe it was on I'm
- 8:29Speaker 1: trying to remember the name of the lake where one
- 8:31Speaker 1: of my buddies, uh went to go into a big
- 8:34Speaker 1: cypress stump and as he was climbing in, here comes
- 8:37Speaker 1: a six foot alligator. M hmm. I've never seen many
- 8:41Speaker 1: moves that fast right back out the So you gotta
- 8:46Speaker 1: scout it out when the water is low on well
- 8:49Speaker 1: with the with the system, I mean, the all natural
- 8:52Speaker 1: the purists, they got to kind of scout, like how
- 8:54Speaker 1: do they how do they become aware of the heidy
- 8:57Speaker 1: holes reaching their hands like or into a log jam,
- 9:02Speaker 1: or over a period of years they've learned like where
- 9:05Speaker 1: the old trees have fallen and that are a hollow,
- 9:09Speaker 1: or where a beaver has doug kind of just through life,
- 9:14Speaker 1: they just kind of find those spots. I used to
- 9:16Speaker 1: know a guy that would. I grew up with a
- 9:19Speaker 1: guy who's hunting buddies of my dad, and they were
- 9:21Speaker 1: kind of like VFW buddies. Um, he would go and
- 9:26Speaker 1: and feel undercut bangs for turtles. Oh what do you
- 9:32Speaker 1: mean he wouldn't. I'm not. It's like you didn't see it.
- 9:37Speaker 1: You ain't seen our logger head turtles. And you can
- 9:39Speaker 1: use a stick to stick up in there too, to
- 9:41Speaker 1: feel around, feel around and see the fish. Well hit
- 9:44Speaker 1: the stick. Yeah, I've seen guys also wait out spooker
- 9:48Speaker 1: turtle and then just wait out and feel with your
- 9:52Speaker 1: feet till eventually find I like my toast. And yeah.
- 9:56Speaker 1: But you know what, when I was growing up, people
- 9:58Speaker 1: everybody said, I don't have any reas I think this
- 10:00Speaker 1: is true, But it was accepted as knowledge that a
- 10:03Speaker 1: turtle will not bite you underwater. I don't know why.
- 10:06Speaker 1: That was the thing that everybody said where they eat, right,
- 10:10Speaker 1: I mean yeah, but it was like a thing people said. Man,
- 10:13Speaker 1: They're like, no, he won't like they won't bite you
- 10:15Speaker 1: out of aggression underwater. Oh yeah. And as a kid
- 10:17Speaker 1: who wants to swim, that's all you need, right, It's like,
- 10:20Speaker 1: oh perfect. I was pulling up one time on a
- 10:23Speaker 1: turtle trap, and my turtle trap it's just shaking, and
- 10:28Speaker 1: there's a turtle in the trap fighting to the death,
- 10:34Speaker 1: with a turtle out of the trap, fighting through the
- 10:36Speaker 1: mesh like you could get his head out of the mash.
- 10:39Speaker 1: They're sure biting each other, have agression underwater. But it's
- 10:42Speaker 1: just the thing people said that they oh, no, they
- 10:43Speaker 1: won't bite you underwater. I don't know. All I'm gonna
- 10:46Speaker 1: say is I have known a lot of people who
- 10:47Speaker 1: will lie to you two. But what about biting up
- 10:50Speaker 1: underneath the water? That they do bite under the water, Well,
- 10:53Speaker 1: how the heck does he eat? No? I understand that.
- 10:56Speaker 1: I don't know why. I don't know why. Everybody said
- 10:58Speaker 1: that that it won't hit you won't to tap. Well,
- 11:00Speaker 1: i'll tell you what you can find out. I'm not pressent.
- 11:04Speaker 1: Have you ever known anybody to lose a digit? No
- 11:09Speaker 1: from a turtle or no? No, I have not. But
- 11:13Speaker 1: then I've got a small group that I go with.
- 11:16Speaker 1: I'm not gonna find out. I like my fingers and
- 11:18Speaker 1: my toes too much. You've been um, you've been shot twice. Yes,
- 11:24Speaker 1: I want to get to that in a minute. Hang tight, though,
- 11:28Speaker 1: I can't hang loose? You hang loose? Yeah? What what
- 11:31Speaker 1: the hell is that? Why do we have both those things?
- 11:36Speaker 1: I don't know. So when you you like your fingers
- 11:41Speaker 1: and your toes too much, when you got shot where
- 11:43Speaker 1: you'd kind of in a fetal position protecting those things,
- 11:46Speaker 1: they didn't hit your fingers, did they? I still got
- 11:48Speaker 1: shot in me all over. We'll talk about that. You
- 11:51Speaker 1: tell me when you want to talk about it. Well,
- 11:53Speaker 1: I just want that's gotta do something real quick. Okrant explain,
- 11:57Speaker 1: I'll check out. Are you to explain the deal to
- 12:00Speaker 1: the one? Krenz gotta tell us about the update about
- 12:03Speaker 1: the dude that was eating the dog? But it wasn't
- 12:07Speaker 1: I feel like cal's probably better. We can we can maybe, well,
- 12:10Speaker 1: did you research? Continue to research? Crens been on it.
- 12:14Speaker 1: He refuses to contact the gentleman. Refuses to contact the gentleman.
- 12:21Speaker 1: It feels as though he doesn't feel like talking about it. Yeah,
- 12:27Speaker 1: y'all got a guy who was eating dogs. No, so
- 12:30Speaker 1: here's the deal. I'll recap this because that's my Listen,
- 12:34Speaker 1: there's a guy in New York cooking the dog up,
- 12:37Speaker 1: cooking a kyle. His neighbor has a fit. His neighbor
- 12:42Speaker 1: has a fit and runs over video on him and
- 12:44Speaker 1: raising Holy hell and calling the police. They come over,
- 12:48Speaker 1: and they don't give him to the benefit of the
- 12:50Speaker 1: doubt and confiscate his dinner, send it off to a lab. Listen,
- 12:57Speaker 1: that was a big war on barbecue. You sigh, right,
- 13:00Speaker 1: there wasn't it. Yeah, so that was a Southern sign
- 13:04Speaker 1: at Yankees, so as you probably should. So they send
- 13:16Speaker 1: it off to where where cornell to the lab. The
- 13:20Speaker 1: lab comes back and says, what, sure, this gentleman was
- 13:24Speaker 1: cooking a coyote, So do they bring him back his thing?
- 13:29Speaker 1: I mean, I don't think so they better bring him something.
- 13:32Speaker 1: I don't know how much they tuck, that's my thought.
- 13:35Speaker 1: So unfortunately, the only news source consistently reporting on this
- 13:38Speaker 1: thing is like Cornell is certain it's a coyote, but
- 13:45Speaker 1: until we really find out for sure, like these are
- 13:48Speaker 1: the actions that could happen. Either, um, the you know,
- 13:54Speaker 1: whoever's in charge of livestock in the State of New
- 13:56Speaker 1: York and handles animal cruelty is going to get in
- 13:59Speaker 1: touch with this guy on the two percent chance that
- 14:02Speaker 1: it is domestic, or uh, the State of New York
- 14:08Speaker 1: fishing game is gonna uh talk to this guy further
- 14:12Speaker 1: right and like leaves it like that. So I call
- 14:15Speaker 1: I called the district uh fishing game there in in
- 14:20Speaker 1: uh whatever county it was, I can't remember now. Um,
- 14:24Speaker 1: and you're doing primary research, yes, And I talked journalist
- 14:29Speaker 1: talked to Warden and then um, you know, I mean
- 14:34Speaker 1: he's like all anecdotal, right, He's like, well, yeah, I mean,
- 14:39Speaker 1: it's not illegal. He's like, if you want to do it,
- 14:41Speaker 1: go for it. He's like it is, you know, coyote season,
- 14:44Speaker 1: and um, in fact, I saw a TV show once
- 14:50Speaker 1: somebody ate a coyote and I was like, oh, all right,
- 14:53Speaker 1: it sounds good and then uh, and then I ended
- 14:58Speaker 1: up calling back just a double double check, and UM
- 15:04Speaker 1: spoke with with the regional communications and you got got
- 15:09Speaker 1: the You got the impression that they had fielded quite
- 15:13Speaker 1: a few phone calls at this but about it. Yeah,
- 15:15Speaker 1: and they're like, we know what you're getting after. And yes,
- 15:20Speaker 1: it is completely legal to eat a coyote in the
- 15:24Speaker 1: state of New York, as long as it's done during
- 15:27Speaker 1: coyote season, which is lengthy. No, because you can eat
- 15:31Speaker 1: a deer out of deer season. It's not like you've
- 15:33Speaker 1: gotta like quit eating your venice and one season ends.
- 15:36Speaker 1: That that would change the game quite a bit, wouldn't that. Yeah,
- 15:39Speaker 1: it won't be a whole lot of time for eating
- 15:40Speaker 1: because you're usually gone a lot of barbecue be barbecue season. Yeah,
- 15:46Speaker 1: I still think Cringe should find this guy. But this
- 15:47Speaker 1: guy's got to be real sick of this whole occurrence
- 15:50Speaker 1: for sure, and like the whole makeshift grill thing that
- 15:53Speaker 1: they were talking about. So the guy you can see
- 15:55Speaker 1: in the picture. Uh, the guy or family gets gets
- 16:00Speaker 1: out in the woods. There's a canoe sitting up there.
- 16:02Speaker 1: There's some things that you would attribute to folks that
- 16:06Speaker 1: are are are messing around in the out of doors.
- 16:10Speaker 1: And I think you'd singe the hair off the coyote
- 16:14Speaker 1: with the blowtorch and that was the makeshift grill. Probably. Yeah, Ah,
- 16:22Speaker 1: this is the story that you know what we need.
- 16:26Speaker 1: Here's what we need to do, Krin. I want you
- 16:28Speaker 1: to get the guy, the lady told on them, and
- 16:33Speaker 1: the person from the lab all here in the studio.
- 16:36Speaker 1: We're gonna hash it out. I'm not gonna we won't
- 16:40Speaker 1: quit until those two people hug each other. I know
- 16:43Speaker 1: where I know where they both live. They're gonna walk
- 16:47Speaker 1: out here holding hands and go to dinner. I have
- 16:50Speaker 1: google math Street exactly how I get ahold of the
- 16:57Speaker 1: gentleman remains to be seen. Tell him we're gonna fly
- 17:02Speaker 1: the both of them mountain. Wanting to just hash it out.
- 17:05Speaker 1: I have a challenge for you for the gentleman who
- 17:07Speaker 1: need the cot of cinema recipe for the next one. Well,
- 17:12Speaker 1: it sounds like he was using my strategy. I think
- 17:15Speaker 1: that he was using that strategy because I when I
- 17:18Speaker 1: cooked the kyle, I just cooked kyle the way I
- 17:20Speaker 1: had seen dogs cooked. That's all. So I think that
- 17:25Speaker 1: he was cooking a kyo in the way that he
- 17:27Speaker 1: probably knows that that's a traditional dog prep. Now, crint,
- 17:32Speaker 1: what's the final we're gonna talk about this go FUNDI deal.
- 17:35Speaker 1: I think let's just talk about it now. I realized
- 17:38Speaker 1: that we hit everybody up about go funding when Brandon
- 17:40Speaker 1: Butler's place got burnt down to the ground and people
- 17:43Speaker 1: really poured the coals to his go fund me campaign.
- 17:45Speaker 1: I don't want this isn't like every week it's I
- 17:47Speaker 1: go to this go fund me. I'm not gonna be
- 17:50Speaker 1: overdoing it on go fund me. But it's a guy
- 17:51Speaker 1: who's a hunter. His daughter very ill, born ill. What
- 17:57Speaker 1: is the she has bronco elmonary dysplasia, which ends severe
- 18:03Speaker 1: pulmonary hypertension. Never even been I think she's spent pretty
- 18:06Speaker 1: much her whole existence in them two and a half
- 18:09Speaker 1: years in hospitals. But this came to our attention because
- 18:13Speaker 1: the father of the child was selling like he was
- 18:17Speaker 1: on an archery chat room or Facebook group, selling his
- 18:22Speaker 1: hunting equipment to raise money to cover travel back and
- 18:26Speaker 1: forth and all the ants, llary and primary expenses involved
- 18:29Speaker 1: in this. What is the name of that thing? It's
- 18:33Speaker 1: kind of it's a heartbreaking, especially you got kids. I don't.
- 18:35Speaker 1: I don't think you need to have kids to find
- 18:37Speaker 1: that heartbreaking. Cody Griffith's is the dude's name bow Hunter, Right, Yeah,
- 18:44Speaker 1: Cody Griffith's. We had um a listener of the podcast
- 18:48Speaker 1: right in and let us know that he as a
- 18:52Speaker 1: member of a hunting group on Facebook. He had seen
- 18:58Speaker 1: someone post in his hunting group, who is a member
- 19:01Speaker 1: of another hunting group on on Facebook, that Cody was
- 19:06Speaker 1: selling some of his archery gear and this led him
- 19:12Speaker 1: to look into Cody's go fund me campaign. It's called
- 19:17Speaker 1: help Bobby Griffith Um, and it tells you all about
- 19:21Speaker 1: his daughter, and I guess he was down to selling
- 19:24Speaker 1: some of his hunting equipment to continue to try to
- 19:27Speaker 1: raise money for her. I maype people should go take
- 19:30Speaker 1: a look. Uh one last quick thing. I'm Last night
- 19:35Speaker 1: we got down ice fish and it was late, so
- 19:39Speaker 1: me and my wife took our kids to a bar
- 19:40Speaker 1: to get him dinner. On the way home, and the
- 19:43Speaker 1: bar had a sign on the door as you come
- 19:45Speaker 1: in a new sign that said no tweakers allowed. I
- 19:49Speaker 1: was like, does that mean drugs or COVID tweakers t
- 19:53Speaker 1: workers workers. I was like, I couldn't tell him that because, like,
- 19:57Speaker 1: I've never heard of a COVID tweaker, COVID tweak, or
- 20:00Speaker 1: someone's like very dialed on COVID precautions. This is the thing.
- 20:05Speaker 1: Oh yeah, COVID tweakers. But then do you think it
- 20:09Speaker 1: made like no drug people? Have those guys drink a
- 20:13Speaker 1: lot though, Yeah, but the COVID tweakers not even even
- 20:17Speaker 1: go into a bar. That's what I was sick. It
- 20:18Speaker 1: was like redundant, right, this brand new And then the
- 20:23Speaker 1: only people wearing masks in the barrow of my kids,
- 20:25Speaker 1: they were shooting pool of mass socks. They got there
- 20:27Speaker 1: so trained up from school, they're comfortable to run around
- 20:30Speaker 1: all damn time in a mask. So you think that's
- 20:32Speaker 1: what it meant? Yes, yeah, I mean no drug people,
- 20:37Speaker 1: no drug addicts, Oh for sure. I mean where you
- 20:39Speaker 1: don't have to specify exactly where you were, but like,
- 20:41Speaker 1: for example, if you were on the high line in
- 20:42Speaker 1: northern Montana, that would be like a more applicable place
- 20:46Speaker 1: for a sign like that. Uh, you do see those
- 20:50Speaker 1: those shirts around everyone Like there's like anti I shouldn't
- 20:55Speaker 1: say anti tweaker. Everybody should be anti tweaker. Don't do drugs. Kids.
- 20:59Speaker 1: If I type in COVID tweaker, I get the second
- 21:01Speaker 1: hit I get as an article called coronavirus and illicit
- 21:05Speaker 1: drug you. So that combines it. Alright, So he got
- 21:11Speaker 1: shot twice? Where was the first time he got shot?
- 21:13Speaker 1: Not where? Like where and where? Meaning where were you
- 21:16Speaker 1: and where on your body? Did you get hit? And
- 21:19Speaker 1: did it hurt? Hell? Yeah, it hurts um first time?
- 21:24Speaker 1: Creston Pittman the first The first time I got shot,
- 21:28Speaker 1: I was in what we call Camp Shabby or Desuda
- 21:32Speaker 1: National Forest. Uh and tell me the national forest again,
- 21:37Speaker 1: de Soto de Soto de Sodo National Forest south of
- 21:40Speaker 1: Hattisburg in Mississippi. Guy, how does he get one that
- 21:43Speaker 1: named after himself? I called it Camp Shelley because there's
- 21:47Speaker 1: also an army base that is there, and you're liable
- 21:52Speaker 1: to be in the woods hunting. Here comes tanks when
- 21:54Speaker 1: they're doing their little army games. But anyway, you're getting
- 21:59Speaker 1: shot gobbles off the his tanks. What is it called
- 22:04Speaker 1: when you go for so many years and you can't
- 22:06Speaker 1: be prosecuted. What is that terminology, Oh, statue of limitation? Yeah,
- 22:11Speaker 1: I think the statue of limitations are over with. Yes.
- 22:15Speaker 1: In fact, I was probably one of the first that
- 22:18Speaker 1: would go down in his truck, take his uh bicycle
- 22:22Speaker 1: out of the back of his truck, and pedal around
- 22:25Speaker 1: the little barriers that they had to get close to
- 22:29Speaker 1: the impact ranges. Because you got him a guible twice,
- 22:33Speaker 1: first when the big gun went off and second whenever
- 22:36Speaker 1: the sheil hit the ground. Oh so you're round of this.
- 22:40Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I mean that was the best way in
- 22:42Speaker 1: the world. That was him, That was him, just making
- 22:49Speaker 1: that noise. No, I've been I've been down to the
- 22:52Speaker 1: time or two. Do you are you missing teeth up
- 22:55Speaker 1: on the top? Uh? Now? But I got split and
- 22:59Speaker 1: I still have a though. Maybe he took them out
- 23:01Speaker 1: in order to make good gobbles. No. Oa, so you're
- 23:04Speaker 1: hunting by the army tanks. Well, I'm going. On that
- 23:08Speaker 1: particular day, I was right across from the Cowpen Road.
- 23:10Speaker 1: People in South Mississippi don't know exactly. Tell me the
- 23:13Speaker 1: name of that road again, Cowpen? Yeah, No, I'm with
- 23:17Speaker 1: you and a sixteen year old. Basically, I'm working a bird.
- 23:23Speaker 1: It's a gobbler with three hens. And one thing that
- 23:26Speaker 1: I found out a long time ago is that in
- 23:29Speaker 1: a last resort, I will gobble at him. Oh that's
- 23:32Speaker 1: how you got shot. So I can't totally blame. So
- 23:37Speaker 1: it's true. Both times I got shot, I was gobbling. Okay,
- 23:40Speaker 1: So it's true you could get shot for goblin, Yes,
- 23:42Speaker 1: especially in public ground. And that's where I was at.
- 23:46Speaker 1: So I guess he saw a movement or whatever it
- 23:50Speaker 1: may be, and heard me gobble, and a sense came
- 23:54Speaker 1: did you what did you know the guy was there?
- 23:56Speaker 1: Not in the course, not actually would have done it,
- 23:58Speaker 1: not in the beginning. No, And uh basically just got
- 24:02Speaker 1: that sense. It came over and something was not right.
- 24:06Speaker 1: Not that I was looking at the bird and he
- 24:07Speaker 1: gave me any I just kind of eased my head
- 24:10Speaker 1: around and looking. There is a young man, uh standing
- 24:14Speaker 1: by a tree. Well the old single barrel twelve games
- 24:17Speaker 1: and as I hollered, I bawled up into a ball
- 24:20Speaker 1: and the majority is shot, hitting my back and uh,
- 24:24Speaker 1: let's just say my rear end, Uh did penetrate? Uh? Que, Well,
- 24:30Speaker 1: I want to back up a second. How far are
- 24:33Speaker 1: we at the time? How far were you from the turkey?
- 24:36Speaker 1: You were about sixty yards? Do you so it seems
- 24:40Speaker 1: like this guy was kind of like maybe sneaking in
- 24:42Speaker 1: on the gobbles. Okay, so he wasn't like set up there. Coincidentally,
- 24:45Speaker 1: I got you. He's hearing all the times I got shot.
- 24:48Speaker 1: He's hearing this racket and he's kind of like coming
- 24:50Speaker 1: in to have a look. Didn't hear him call, didn't
- 24:54Speaker 1: hear anything. So I just bawled up into a ball.
- 25:00Speaker 1: He shot and it wasn't like a death shot, but
- 25:03Speaker 1: it penetrated. Think of about a hundred wasp stinging you
- 25:08Speaker 1: at one time. That's about what it felt like. From
- 25:11Speaker 1: what range did he hit you? About forty five yards?
- 25:15Speaker 1: That's when we had lead shot, only not copper coated
- 25:18Speaker 1: lead and not T s S. Do you feel like, Um,
- 25:22Speaker 1: just from your understanding of turkey shot at that distance, Um,
- 25:28Speaker 1: would that would that have the MP to get through
- 25:30Speaker 1: your skull and get your brain? Well? I had two pillars,
- 25:34Speaker 1: only two pillars that they removed was right beside my
- 25:37Speaker 1: back of my neck. Oh, it could have got your
- 25:39Speaker 1: spine and the rest of them. They said, we'll do
- 25:41Speaker 1: more damage and taking them out than you know, just
- 25:46Speaker 1: let him stay and over a period of about five years,
- 25:49Speaker 1: I'd get like a pimple on my back and starts
- 25:52Speaker 1: scratching it and they're coming. Number six shot popping out.
- 25:56Speaker 1: Save some of those huh why not why? And a
- 26:10Speaker 1: little put it? Tell you like this those type of trophies.
- 26:13Speaker 1: I don't want. Um what uh the shooter? Did he
- 26:19Speaker 1: run off or did he run over to help? Was
- 26:23Speaker 1: he helpful? Daddy? If about forty years ago your son
- 26:28Speaker 1: came home without his shotgun, I still have it to
- 26:32Speaker 1: this day. Let's just say we ended up in a confrontation.
- 26:38Speaker 1: I don't want to use that strong of the language
- 26:41Speaker 1: that I we didn't agree with each other. I'm trying
- 26:46Speaker 1: to say this politically correct. I confronted him, and he
- 26:52Speaker 1: proceeded to tell me that he could hunt anywhere he
- 26:55Speaker 1: wanted to, as I'm trying to educate the young man
- 27:00Speaker 1: to the point of recognize your target, to see the
- 27:04Speaker 1: whole animal, don't shoot it, say on, so on so on,
- 27:07Speaker 1: And he was blaming you for having uh. Yes, and
- 27:12Speaker 1: I do take part of the I take part of
- 27:14Speaker 1: the blame. But when he swung that old single barrel
- 27:18Speaker 1: at me, and after he shot you, Oh yeah, and
- 27:21Speaker 1: told me to go to Haydes that he would hunt
- 27:23Speaker 1: anyway he wanted to. Uh. I proceeded to disarm him.
- 27:28Speaker 1: Shall we say, man, talk about a guy doubling down?
- 27:31Speaker 1: You're talking about are you reading that? Getting I just
- 27:33Speaker 1: got to say it, piste off. I got piste off now,
- 27:37Speaker 1: so he he got you onder the edge of after
- 27:40Speaker 1: he shot, he tried to knock the hill out on
- 27:42Speaker 1: me with his gun barrel. I think you, guys, I
- 27:44Speaker 1: would feel that if I shot someone, I would run
- 27:47Speaker 1: over and sort of be like, um, boy, am I
- 27:50Speaker 1: in the wrong? Is there anything I can do to
- 27:54Speaker 1: be of assistance? Well, the second time I got shot,
- 27:57Speaker 1: that's exactly what happened. That's okay. Well, I want to folks.
- 28:00Speaker 1: And it was about three hundred yards from where I
- 28:02Speaker 1: got shot at the time, and I was doing the
- 28:06Speaker 1: same thing. You know, we're kind of hard to educate something.
- 28:09Speaker 1: Is that where you plan on taking Steve Turkey hunting
- 28:11Speaker 1: when he comes down to visit. I don't even go
- 28:17Speaker 1: in that part of the country anymore. Uh. The second
- 28:20Speaker 1: time I got shot, basically I'm not um, no police involvement,
- 28:30Speaker 1: but yeah, did you go seek medical treatment? Ah? I
- 28:34Speaker 1: finally went to the hospital that doug those two shots out.
- 28:37Speaker 1: How many pels did you get in? You a bunch?
- 28:41Speaker 1: Let's just say later on that night, after I got
- 28:43Speaker 1: back from the hospital. Um, if you want to picturing
- 28:48Speaker 1: your mind on funny side, uh, imagine someone having a
- 28:52Speaker 1: couple of adult beverages and then getting on top of
- 28:57Speaker 1: the bathroom counter with a need, a pocket life and
- 29:01Speaker 1: a pair of tweezers and popping as many as you
- 29:05Speaker 1: can out of your rear inn out. That was just man.
- 29:10Speaker 1: The second time, I didn't get penetrated that much, and
- 29:14Speaker 1: you never said to the cops here I got shot. Well,
- 29:18Speaker 1: you beat up, I think john, people do that. Let
- 29:21Speaker 1: me give you a first wait wait wait, wait wait wait,
- 29:24Speaker 1: we called the cops. We called the cops last night.
- 29:26Speaker 1: You got to realize, though, how many years ago that was? Okay? Okay,
- 29:33Speaker 1: I'm sixty seven, I think, yeah, sixty seven years old.
- 29:37Speaker 1: I was in my twenties, early twenties whenever this happened,
- 29:42Speaker 1: and I just didn't see any need to do it. Okay,
- 29:48Speaker 1: the second time, second time, and here again we're going
- 29:53Speaker 1: way back. Okay, we're going back and when there were
- 29:56Speaker 1: not that many turkey hunters. There was nothing for nation
- 30:00Speaker 1: that there is out there now with you know, quality
- 30:04Speaker 1: TV shows like yourself and all the others and the
- 30:07Speaker 1: Internet than having in that crap. Uh, you were turkeys too,
- 30:11Speaker 1: probably right then? Oh, I can remember trying to find
- 30:14Speaker 1: a track. I've been through it all. I've seen from
- 30:21Speaker 1: basically very little, all the way to the rise of
- 30:26Speaker 1: what we call the good old days, to the steady
- 30:28Speaker 1: and off to the decline that we're having late nineties,
- 30:33Speaker 1: early two thousands. About no before the two thousands, we're
- 30:37Speaker 1: gonna say nineties, it's gonna be in the nineties. Um.
- 30:42Speaker 1: But this gentleman I knew, and he was one of
- 30:45Speaker 1: the few what I call good turkey hunters. But he's
- 30:50Speaker 1: a creeper too, That's what I say. A creeper, Huh,
- 30:54Speaker 1: A sneaker. That's not bushwhagon, that's figuring them out by
- 30:58Speaker 1: a guy. Because I want to you. If I can't
- 31:01Speaker 1: call him, I'll crawling. Okay, So let's tea. I want
- 31:05Speaker 1: to listen. I'm really interesting in getting shot there. But
- 31:07Speaker 1: I want to understand the Norman clature here or the
- 31:10Speaker 1: the lexicon. What in your mind is a bushwhacker? Somebody
- 31:18Speaker 1: shoot him out the window. Yeah, your vehicle. Now, what's
- 31:28Speaker 1: your opinion on the ground blacks where that damn things?
- 31:32Speaker 1: It's too confining. Now hang on, let's stop right here
- 31:36Speaker 1: so that that that that I can get this out right.
- 31:40Speaker 1: People that are listening as a general center, ruse. You
- 31:44Speaker 1: don't walk and call and you don't sneak. There are places,
- 31:50Speaker 1: are tracts of land that you can get away with it.
- 31:54Speaker 1: We're fixing to get into a whole scoop. I don't
- 31:57Speaker 1: even know what I want people to hunt safely. Okay,
- 31:59Speaker 1: we're talking about eight. I just want to understand before
- 32:02Speaker 1: we do that. I want to get into life lessons
- 32:05Speaker 1: about getting shot turkey. But I just I'm just I'm
- 32:07Speaker 1: just curious about this from from regional variations. Uh a creeper,
- 32:13Speaker 1: here's a gobble and sneaks up on it. Have you
- 32:16Speaker 1: ever tried it in the South? No, okay, then you
- 32:20Speaker 1: hit and tried it. Yet, don't give me the you're
- 32:23Speaker 1: gonna you're gonna lay on the like these turkeys are
- 32:26Speaker 1: so like everyone knows that the Missouri turkey. No, Mississippi,
- 32:30Speaker 1: Alabama and Louisiana. It's very hardest states. They are evenywhere
- 32:32Speaker 1: in the country. If you can kill a bird in
- 32:34Speaker 1: Mississippi and Alabama, you can go anywhere in the United
- 32:37Speaker 1: States and kill a bird. I promise you. We have
- 32:39Speaker 1: the seasons of any state. But you're not. You won't
- 32:44Speaker 1: answer my question. Okay, question, what is a creeper? A
- 32:50Speaker 1: creeper is someone that um if he won't come to you,
- 32:57Speaker 1: you go to him. By that time, you have been
- 33:02Speaker 1: in on this bird multiple times and you have figured
- 33:06Speaker 1: out what is going on. Either he is homosexual or
- 33:12Speaker 1: either he has all the hands that he wants and
- 33:15Speaker 1: it's not going to come to you. Now. Is that
- 33:19Speaker 1: the accepted procedure that most turkey hunters do? Absolutely not,
- 33:24Speaker 1: but you are open to it. I'll put a hen
- 33:26Speaker 1: decoy on my head and crawl out in the middle
- 33:28Speaker 1: of a cow pastern kill him. I'll put a tail
- 33:33Speaker 1: chaser on my gun barrel and crawl up and kill him.
- 33:37Speaker 1: I'll dig a hole in the ground and bury myself
- 33:41Speaker 1: to kill him. So you're not down on the creeper
- 33:44Speaker 1: that shot you. Okay, I thought it was a derogatory term. Alright,
- 33:49Speaker 1: So there you are hunting. We're hunting, and am I
- 33:53Speaker 1: gonna catch some slack over this. I don't care though.
- 33:56Speaker 1: It's my style. It's my way, not from this grew Okay.
- 34:01Speaker 1: It was like I said, if I can't call him,
- 34:04Speaker 1: I will crawl him. If it's legal in that particular state. Alabama,
- 34:09Speaker 1: for example, just passed the law that like the fanning,
- 34:13Speaker 1: that's a creeper. You've seen that that that's a creeper, right, Okay,
- 34:18Speaker 1: fanning is illegal now in the state of that. How
- 34:22Speaker 1: do they even if you're stationary or yeah, how do
- 34:25Speaker 1: they spell it out? There's multiple states that can but
- 34:28Speaker 1: how do they describe? You know what I mean? Like, well,
- 34:30Speaker 1: how is it described? Basically? I am guessing. Okay, Uh.
- 34:38Speaker 1: I have to tell you about a couple of different
- 34:41Speaker 1: products made by Mojo. There is the tail Chaser erect,
- 34:47Speaker 1: which has an apparatus that goes on to your gun
- 34:51Speaker 1: barrel okay, that you can crawl and keep in front
- 34:55Speaker 1: of you, and it has like a little tripod on it,
- 34:59Speaker 1: and then there just scoot and shoot that has a
- 35:02Speaker 1: handle behind. And I've had one of those in my
- 35:05Speaker 1: Amazon car because they're out of stock for a long time.
- 35:08Speaker 1: I like those things. Let me know if you need one,
- 35:10Speaker 1: I can get you one. Please Okay, you need one? Yeah, okay, okay, uh, Terry,
- 35:18Speaker 1: are you hearing this? I need three more. I don't
- 35:21Speaker 1: even think it's in my I think that now something's
- 35:23Speaker 1: in your Amazon cart. So long to your wife deletes
- 35:25Speaker 1: it because she's like, why is this been in here
- 35:26Speaker 1: for like eight monks? Just don't know the right Okay,
- 35:30Speaker 1: but man, we still haven't talk about getting shot. But
- 35:32Speaker 1: go on, but go on. I don't know where the
- 35:34Speaker 1: heck oup was that? Oh? But that that that that's
- 35:37Speaker 1: a creeper. If you don't want to enlighten normal and
- 35:40Speaker 1: it's a it's a fan that allows you to move yes,
- 35:43Speaker 1: up on birds like partially at least partially obscured. Yes,
- 35:47Speaker 1: probably more so because their attention is on the fan.
- 35:50Speaker 1: Someone to explain why this is dangerous, because yeah, what
- 35:56Speaker 1: do you what did you got? You've got a gobbler?
- 35:58Speaker 1: What are you trying to hunt? I got? I'll repeat,
- 36:01Speaker 1: only do this in places where you know you can
- 36:03Speaker 1: do it safely, like very private land, in the middle
- 36:06Speaker 1: of that private land. Oh and Yania, are you trying
- 36:08Speaker 1: to um find out how they articulate? Yeah? Right now,
- 36:14Speaker 1: that's a tough one to explain and regular yeah, and
- 36:16Speaker 1: I can't wait to hear like what exactly, like how
- 36:18Speaker 1: they express it, Like, I think that's the state of Pennsylvania.
- 36:23Speaker 1: You cannot uh, you have to be stationary, period. And
- 36:28Speaker 1: I believe you have to walk in with Hunter's orange.
- 36:32Speaker 1: And I have also been told that you need to
- 36:34Speaker 1: put a like a ban or whatever hanging on the tree.
- 36:38Speaker 1: I'm not sure about that part of it. I believe
- 36:40Speaker 1: in Pennsylvania they say many years you can stalk a
- 36:43Speaker 1: turkey right in some places. Huh, that makes sense, Like
- 36:49Speaker 1: if you're mobile, you have to display that your mobile
- 36:52Speaker 1: by wearing plays orange. That that would be an easy
- 36:55Speaker 1: way to do. That feels a little big brother to
- 36:57Speaker 1: me personally. I believe that's the only eight where Hunter's
- 37:00Speaker 1: Orange is required. Interesting, I believe, I don't know that
- 37:06Speaker 1: far fact. Probably because he had a bunch of ninnies
- 37:10Speaker 1: reporting themselves to the cops every time they got shot.
- 37:13Speaker 1: That's why it's best just keep quiet, you tweezers. Let me,
- 37:23Speaker 1: let me set the seat, let me set the scene
- 37:25Speaker 1: for you. Here you are, you're a survivor. You've been
- 37:27Speaker 1: shot turkey hunting before you got shot because you're a goblin.
- 37:31Speaker 1: So you go back out to that spot and commenced
- 37:33Speaker 1: to goblin, and a gentleman creeps up only and basically
- 37:38Speaker 1: the same thing steps on a twig. As he's getting
- 37:40Speaker 1: close to me here again, I turned and looked, and
- 37:44Speaker 1: I went, oh my god, bawled up into a ball.
- 37:47Speaker 1: I thought I was gonna have to carry him out.
- 37:50Speaker 1: He was that upset. He was that upset, and he
- 37:52Speaker 1: quit hunting. Oh now, wait a second, that's not the
- 37:55Speaker 1: rest of the story. Finally, I kept on him and
- 38:00Speaker 1: talk to him, to him, everything's okay, honest mistake. I'm
- 38:03Speaker 1: to blame as much as as you are. And uh,
- 38:07Speaker 1: I made him go turkey hunting again. Really, so you
- 38:10Speaker 1: kind of like stuck with him and mentored him through it.
- 38:13Speaker 1: Not mentored him, but and he was older than I was,
- 38:15Speaker 1: and I was a kid back there. I wasn't like
- 38:17Speaker 1: I think it was like two years after I got
- 38:19Speaker 1: shot the first around. Hell, it might have been eighteen
- 38:23Speaker 1: or nineteen when I got shot the first time. The
- 38:25Speaker 1: second time, I was I can't remember, somewhere between eighteen
- 38:28Speaker 1: and twenty five somewhere. And he's still around now, he's
- 38:31Speaker 1: passed away. M hmm. But he went back turkey hunting again,
- 38:38Speaker 1: How did it, like, at what point did you at
- 38:40Speaker 1: what point in the getting shot? Like when did the
- 38:43Speaker 1: tables turn? You know what I mean? Like did you immediately?
- 38:46Speaker 1: I mean, so you imagine that someone accidentally shoots you
- 38:50Speaker 1: and they rush over to comfort you, Like, how quickly
- 38:55Speaker 1: did it become that that You're like, oh, uh, he's
- 38:58Speaker 1: hurt more than I am. Immediately almost because he's on
- 39:02Speaker 1: the ground and he's holding his chest and he's crying.
- 39:06Speaker 1: You know what I mean. I mean he comes to
- 39:08Speaker 1: me immediately whenever I screamed, and then he comes to me.
- 39:12Speaker 1: And when he gets right there on me, I stand up.
- 39:15Speaker 1: He falls down to his knees. He's got his head
- 39:19Speaker 1: buried in his hands, sobbing, you know, apologizing, and I'm going,
- 39:26Speaker 1: I'm fine. You know, it's stung a little bit. You
- 39:29Speaker 1: know that I've been here before. Yeah, yeah, hell, let's second.
- 39:32Speaker 1: Tell what he did do? Though? It made me go
- 39:36Speaker 1: find some private land to hunt. Well, if you're you
- 39:43Speaker 1: told me a very important lesson my gobling the woods.
- 39:47Speaker 1: It took twice, but it finally got through. Hit us
- 40:01Speaker 1: with that gobl again. Wait a second, I don't really
- 40:05Speaker 1: stand how you doing that? Pretty amazing. It comes and goes.
- 40:11Speaker 1: Now at my age, that's halfway decent. That's pretty interesting.
- 40:18Speaker 1: Let me teach you. I don't know, man, Yes, well
- 40:23Speaker 1: we got some other instructing to do. But yeah, okay,
- 40:26Speaker 1: let me okay, can we get into right. We'll do
- 40:29Speaker 1: what we'll do. Lesson number one now okay, lesson number
- 40:31Speaker 1: one is real, sep say the word al now say
- 40:35Speaker 1: it inhaling air. Oh there you go. Oh kind of man.
- 40:44Speaker 1: We'll get a sore throat squeezed to get it. I
- 40:51Speaker 1: need the foundation. That's the foundation. It hurts. Oh, it's owl.
- 41:01Speaker 1: And then what in all inhale? All inhale? You're in
- 41:09Speaker 1: your inhale when you do that? Yes, can you see
- 41:11Speaker 1: it again? Oh? Nice? Yeah, wagged that tongue, Jannie. Similar
- 41:23Speaker 1: like when I do an elk bark I inhale, you
- 41:26Speaker 1: can gobble. Yanni's a gifted. He's given that. Hey, Yanni,
- 41:31Speaker 1: show show him the way off people. This is elk
- 41:36Speaker 1: way off. Yeah, otherwise known as a whistle. That's where
- 41:43Speaker 1: you're like, man, I don't know if I want to
- 41:45Speaker 1: walk way over there? Oh, oh, somehow there's like a
- 41:57Speaker 1: pop in there a little bit. What's on that it strong,
- 42:01Speaker 1: and then I'm relaxed. Your larynx is a rubber band.
- 42:06Speaker 1: This is the analogy I'm gonna use here. How my
- 42:09Speaker 1: voice now is starting to get a little deeper. I've
- 42:11Speaker 1: stretched mind so much I can't do it like what
- 42:14Speaker 1: I used to could do it, and it's not dependable.
- 42:17Speaker 1: But it's like I'm stretching that rubber band and then
- 42:20Speaker 1: I'm letting off of it, and I'm using my tongue too.
- 42:28Speaker 1: He even gets that microphone shaking. Uh, how did how
- 42:34Speaker 1: did how did it come to be? How did you
- 42:36Speaker 1: wind up on let him in doing Turkey Colling well
- 42:40Speaker 1: on O from the nineteen fifty three I was hatched
- 42:43Speaker 1: when I popped out of my MoMA and the baby
- 42:45Speaker 1: doctor grabbed me by my hind legs and hit me
- 42:47Speaker 1: on the hine instead of crying, That's what I did.
- 42:52Speaker 1: Some say that was Thanksgiving Day. I'm an old competition caller. Yeah,
- 42:58Speaker 1: I even see that. You were the champ of champs.
- 43:01Speaker 1: That's the hell of I've held all five different world championships,
- 43:06Speaker 1: some of them multiple times, State, regional, district, Grand, National, National,
- 43:12Speaker 1: That's what I did. That was that was my sport.
- 43:15Speaker 1: Can you make any money doing that. But you don't
- 43:17Speaker 1: make money that you don't there's like a purse that
- 43:19Speaker 1: you win, right, well, yes and no. Oh, so there's
- 43:23Speaker 1: like a big prize money. You know. I didn't mean
- 43:25Speaker 1: like all the ancillary industry and all that expertise, but
- 43:28Speaker 1: I mean, like, here's the money because you won, uh,
- 43:31Speaker 1: like the World Championship at one point in time, pay
- 43:34Speaker 1: five thousand dollars first place. Okay, so uh when I started,
- 43:39Speaker 1: you were lucky. If you get your entry phase back
- 43:41Speaker 1: and maybe a shotgun and some of the guys now
- 43:46Speaker 1: all are like the n wtf um you used to
- 43:50Speaker 1: have the big purse five four three? Do you want? Okay? Here,
- 43:55Speaker 1: let me hit you with some of these credentials. So
- 43:59Speaker 1: you've won. I can't believe it's just made things to win. Oh,
- 44:06Speaker 1: it's a sport. Yeah. I mean if you were like
- 44:08Speaker 1: a rodeo guy, you couldn't generate a list of winds
- 44:10Speaker 1: like this. It used to be a giant the World
- 44:13Speaker 1: Turkey Calling Contest, the World Natural Voice turkey Calling Contest.
- 44:19Speaker 1: Then here's like tag Team turkey Calling, the World two
- 44:22Speaker 1: man Team turkey Calling contest. Like your throat gets so
- 44:27Speaker 1: sorry you tag your buddy, Now you're doing a scenario.
- 44:30Speaker 1: Oh why aren't we through that? The two man team
- 44:34Speaker 1: is basically they will give you a scene like you're
- 44:37Speaker 1: walking down another logging Can we do it? Because I
- 44:39Speaker 1: want to do it with you and Yanni? Oh lord,
- 44:43Speaker 1: this is hard. We practice this stuff. You got practice, Okay.
- 44:48Speaker 1: I want you to play both parts and Steve will
- 44:51Speaker 1: give you the scene. No, yeah, but give me a scenario.
- 44:53Speaker 1: Give me like an example of a scene. I'm walking
- 44:57Speaker 1: down the logging road in South Alabama is late uh
- 45:00Speaker 1: in the season. Birds have been hammered pretty hard. You
- 45:05Speaker 1: locate the bird uh with some type of a locator call,
- 45:10Speaker 1: and then you commenced to call the bird in required calls,
- 45:16Speaker 1: clucks and purrs, cutting other hen turkey, scratching in the leaves.
- 45:21Speaker 1: I didn't bring my flapping scratch something some one of
- 45:25Speaker 1: the people, one of the two men is playing the guy. Whatever. Whatever,
- 45:32Speaker 1: You worked the scenario out between the two collars. My
- 45:36Speaker 1: team member, for example, in a couple of a couple
- 45:40Speaker 1: of times I wanted was Chris Parrish. My team member
- 45:43Speaker 1: might do a PV A woodpecker in the bird, not gobble.
- 45:48Speaker 1: So you gotta take it from the tip o. Lord,
- 45:50Speaker 1: you might have a wood wood duck come whistling overhead,
- 45:55Speaker 1: and then I might blow a crow call and the
- 45:58Speaker 1: turkey gobbles to it was up for It's so you're
- 46:04Speaker 1: really you're responsible for the whole whatever. I like it.
- 46:07Speaker 1: I like so there's like a semi that drives by
- 46:10Speaker 1: in the distance. I even broke in one time. I'm
- 46:18Speaker 1: a little crazy though. It's just okay, all right, let
- 46:24Speaker 1: me just here. We don't need to do the whole average.
- 46:26Speaker 1: You know, I just might to provide a couple of things.
- 46:27Speaker 1: So let's do let's do this. Okay, So wood duck
- 46:30Speaker 1: flies by, Um, well, I know how my wood duck
- 46:33Speaker 1: whistle call. Oh so it's not okay, so you're allowed
- 46:36Speaker 1: to bring up, but how do you know what to
- 46:37Speaker 1: bring because you don't know the scenario. Well, you know
- 46:41Speaker 1: what the scenario is ahead of time, and then the
- 46:43Speaker 1: two guys get together. You're oh, so you can rehearse.
- 46:47Speaker 1: It's not like it's not like im no no, no
- 46:49Speaker 1: no no. It might be the day of the contest.
- 46:53Speaker 1: They gave it. So that way you can kind of
- 46:55Speaker 1: round up what you need. For example, here's a real
- 46:57Speaker 1: quick Oh you ought to hear this guy. I'm not dude,
- 47:06Speaker 1: you haven't heard this guy. You do a better one
- 47:12Speaker 1: and night when you're into it. I can do a
- 47:14Speaker 1: good crow. Okay, do crow? No, you got a great
- 47:20Speaker 1: Oh you're not bringing it my little, My little role
- 47:24Speaker 1: at the end is I've I've forgotten it or lost
- 47:26Speaker 1: it or something. But I can't have been that role.
- 47:30Speaker 1: He's just not feeling it because he's not out the woods.
- 47:32Speaker 1: He can rip one. And by the way, you're supposed
- 47:35Speaker 1: to play attention to this. I know you and you
- 47:37Speaker 1: play so No, we'll get to that. We'll get to that.
- 47:42Speaker 1: But Yanny, go ahead. He's being bashful. He gobbles. I
- 47:56Speaker 1: tissed it? What's it? What do you do do now? Nothing?
- 48:15Speaker 1: Moments labor A truck rolls by. Well all right, ah,
- 48:31Speaker 1: oh this is my part man, listen to mine, and
- 48:36Speaker 1: he goes. I want to hear that one again, like
- 48:38Speaker 1: that drumm. Now when I'm trying to paint the picture
- 48:45Speaker 1: I'm trying to paint, is I have a hent? First?
- 48:49Speaker 1: She cut, try to get excited. He did not respond.
- 48:53Speaker 1: I came back with soft calling, clucking, pern seftie up,
- 48:56Speaker 1: and then I threw a drum in there. So I'm
- 48:59Speaker 1: painting the picture in the turkey that I'm hunting that
- 49:03Speaker 1: there is a hen, but she has a non responsive
- 49:10Speaker 1: with her. So you'll you will make a you will
- 49:14Speaker 1: mimic something that happens in nature. You'll mimic a drum
- 49:19Speaker 1: to get a gobbler worked up. Oh god, yes, that's
- 49:21Speaker 1: one of my favorite calls. One again, m hmm. I've
- 49:30Speaker 1: never uh have you? Have you like encountered people doing that?
- 49:35Speaker 1: Very few? No, And I'm surprised that we haven't heard
- 49:38Speaker 1: that guys uck? Well who says, Hello, who's guys uck?
- 49:43Speaker 1: He used to compete against you? Hello? Back? Uh, you
- 49:48Speaker 1: might have whooped him, He might have whooped you. I
- 49:49Speaker 1: don't know it, don't mater. I haven't gotten a third
- 49:52Speaker 1: the way through all your credentials. Let me put it
- 49:53Speaker 1: to you like this, nobody else will ever get the
- 49:55Speaker 1: chance to you. Quit. I'm retired, hung up your spur.
- 50:00Speaker 1: That's right, so to speak. That's right. I don't have
- 50:03Speaker 1: to prove it to anybody else anymore. And the guy's
- 50:06Speaker 1: out there a lot better than me right now. Tell
- 50:08Speaker 1: people what that when he's drumming and spitting there. Tell
- 50:11Speaker 1: people what the birds are actually doing human terminology. No
- 50:15Speaker 1: just like explained like what he's like the noise, like
- 50:17Speaker 1: you made the noise. Explain that noise displaying or he's
- 50:23Speaker 1: in full strut. He's blown up, is basically what he is.
- 50:26Speaker 1: He's trying to make an impression on that hen that
- 50:30Speaker 1: I'm the prettiest mail that you've ever seen. And I
- 50:34Speaker 1: want to make love to you. I want to breathe you.
- 50:36Speaker 1: That's what I want to do. And by just drumming
- 50:39Speaker 1: and not gobbling. And since the bird that I'm hunting
- 50:42Speaker 1: is vocal, and if you heard when I did to
- 50:46Speaker 1: collucking purrs and I drummed, he gobbled. So now I've
- 50:49Speaker 1: playing that picture in his mind there's a dude over
- 50:52Speaker 1: there trying to steal his girlfriend. But I mean, I
- 50:54Speaker 1: want you to tell people how the bird makes that noise.
- 50:57Speaker 1: You know, I don't think anybody has ever truly figured
- 51:00Speaker 1: it out with or it's coming from the body or
- 51:02Speaker 1: coming from the mouth. I think it's coming from the
- 51:04Speaker 1: actual from the mouth itself. I think because he's also
- 51:10Speaker 1: beating his wings, you know, on the ground. Well, now
- 51:15Speaker 1: that's a whole total different sound that where the wingtips
- 51:19Speaker 1: are dragon, I think it's coming from inside of the body,
- 51:23Speaker 1: and I still think it's coming from the actual mouth itself.
- 51:26Speaker 1: He might be sucking in there. I don't know. I'm
- 51:29Speaker 1: not done that research. Mike Chamberlain, what about Mike Chamberlin
- 51:41Speaker 1: and tell us, well, I'm sucked into the story now,
- 51:45Speaker 1: So where do you go from here? So you you're
- 51:48Speaker 1: telling this turkey that's on the approach that there's a
- 51:51Speaker 1: male competing for a female and he better get over here.
- 51:55Speaker 1: I'm not gonna gobble. I'm gonna continue my yelping if
- 52:00Speaker 1: he gobbles. For example, you find um, okay, that's the
- 52:21Speaker 1: one that you're hunting. That's one I'm hunting. Okay, okay,
- 52:24Speaker 1: But in the scenario, there's no okay in a two
- 52:27Speaker 1: man turkey calling scenario, there's no human. You're supposed to
- 52:31Speaker 1: be doing like birds, communicating to birds. You're not replicating
- 52:35Speaker 1: a hunter. Well, one is the hunter, yes, and one
- 52:41Speaker 1: is the bird that I'm after. I got you, So
- 52:44Speaker 1: we're I thought you're you're creating an entirely natural scenario
- 52:49Speaker 1: of how this might play out between two turkeys. No, no, no,
- 52:52Speaker 1: I'm with you. Well, we're trying to harvest the birds.
- 52:54Speaker 1: What we're trying to do in the two man and
- 52:58Speaker 1: usually one person is primarily the bird that you're hunting,
- 53:04Speaker 1: and one person is the hunter, but sometimes they get
- 53:08Speaker 1: together also. It just depends on what I'm trying to accomplish.
- 53:13Speaker 1: So really it's a it's a test of how two
- 53:15Speaker 1: people can sort of like their vocabulary of natural noises,
- 53:20Speaker 1: including turkey sounds, and how they might create the cadence
- 53:25Speaker 1: and calls response. Give me a county back in the
- 53:29Speaker 1: background that could be an elk buglint, even though that
- 53:31Speaker 1: doesn't happen that time of year, but it's still painting
- 53:34Speaker 1: that picture, you know. And they do do these weird
- 53:37Speaker 1: little bugles in the spring. You have your partner get
- 53:42Speaker 1: real excited and then make a fly down noise and
- 53:45Speaker 1: then shut like the next two and a half hour,
- 53:47Speaker 1: let's fly down. What's a tree column? Yeh m? All right?
- 54:18Speaker 1: Did you hit the ground? Ah? Okay? Let me telling
- 54:42Speaker 1: me the best thing to do right here, I'm what
- 54:45Speaker 1: kind of loss where we're at? If he is progressively
- 54:48Speaker 1: now starting to move towards you and is gobbling that much,
- 54:54Speaker 1: you know what the best thing to do with this
- 54:55Speaker 1: turkey collar is put in your pocket spit it. I
- 55:00Speaker 1: shut up. You've done enough. All you can do is
- 55:05Speaker 1: educating a little bit more. Now let me keep painting
- 55:08Speaker 1: the scene on your credentials. So the World Man, the
- 55:10Speaker 1: World two Man, the World two Man Team Turken Calling Contest,
- 55:16Speaker 1: the World Gobbling Turkey Calling Contest, the World All Call
- 55:21Speaker 1: Turkey Calling Contest. You're the only man to a little
- 55:25Speaker 1: person to hold five different world titles. Other wins include
- 55:31Speaker 1: seven National champion ships, nine National champ of Champs, the
- 55:38Speaker 1: US Gobbling Champion, the Grand National Gobbling Champion, and Grand
- 55:44Speaker 1: National Champ of Champs. Blind Hog finds an acre every
- 55:52Speaker 1: down again, what's the Champ of Champs? It's like a
- 55:55Speaker 1: world that's like it's like nationals. Uh, like the World
- 55:59Speaker 1: Champions Champions, all the Grand Nationally m WTF Grand National
- 56:02Speaker 1: Champione Champions is only open to the former national or
- 56:07Speaker 1: Grand National winners. So it's like if there's six or
- 56:11Speaker 1: seven World champions there, six or seven Grand National Champions there,
- 56:15Speaker 1: they'll duke it out. We duke it out and you
- 56:18Speaker 1: won that. So you beat you went in and but
- 56:21Speaker 1: you went in and beat the whoever had accrued previous wins.
- 56:29Speaker 1: Is there like in the in the turkey call in
- 56:32Speaker 1: the world. Um, do you guys all remain chummy or
- 56:35Speaker 1: there like legitimate rivalries where people stop liking each other.
- 56:38Speaker 1: I like everybody, so he doesn't get ugly. He doesn't
- 56:41Speaker 1: get ugly, like where you honestly don't like somebody another caller,
- 56:47Speaker 1: like a professional rivalry. I come from the old days.
- 56:52Speaker 1: And uh, let's see if you recognize this name, Ben
- 56:55Speaker 1: Rogers Lee. He is the anyway, he's the father. Okay.
- 57:04Speaker 1: Basically what it breaks down to the turkey colling, to
- 57:07Speaker 1: publicizing and so on and so forth. Please do a
- 57:11Speaker 1: little research and educate him on that. Okay. Uh, there
- 57:16Speaker 1: are people who don't like other people. Yes, I didn't
- 57:20Speaker 1: mean like that. Like, I didn't mean it that way.
- 57:22Speaker 1: I meant I don't mean that you don't like them.
- 57:25Speaker 1: But is it when you guys get together, are you
- 57:28Speaker 1: all sitting at the same table. The vast majority yes,
- 57:35Speaker 1: it says it stays friendly. I'll sit down and have
- 57:38Speaker 1: a beer with Chris Parrish or whoever it may be.
- 57:42Speaker 1: You know, at any point in time, and I have
- 57:45Speaker 1: this saying, especially now, pass it on. Please pass it on. Uh.
- 57:51Speaker 1: And I encourage any and of the competition callers are
- 57:57Speaker 1: willing to help someone else, so it's a lot more positive,
- 58:00Speaker 1: but very few. Now there's some that might not show
- 58:04Speaker 1: you their call because it's their quote secret cut like
- 58:08Speaker 1: in their diaphragm, and they don't want everybody else to
- 58:11Speaker 1: get it. Yes, that goes on, but that's about the extent,
- 58:15Speaker 1: you know. So you won one of these. And then
- 58:19Speaker 1: someone from a producer from David Letterman was like, I
- 58:22Speaker 1: need to get this guy on the show. Actually kind
- 58:25Speaker 1: of like who was it who called? Clay's the one
- 58:28Speaker 1: who called, I believe UH called the n w TS
- 58:32Speaker 1: National Wild Turkey Federation, and uh, they set a lot
- 58:36Speaker 1: of this stuff up, whether it was Letterman, Leno, Rigis
- 58:40Speaker 1: and Kelly and all the craft that I've done, it
- 58:42Speaker 1: basically all came through U n WTF. And at one
- 58:46Speaker 1: point in time, while Turkey Bourbon was a sponsor of
- 58:49Speaker 1: the adult divisions, like the first time that I did Letterman, Um,
- 58:58Speaker 1: I can't remember the young ladies know, but it was
- 59:01Speaker 1: her father was the head brewer of Wild Turkey Bourbon
- 59:05Speaker 1: uh in Canada, and uh she basically flew as alien. Yeah,
- 59:11Speaker 1: and UH took care of everything. But ninety of it
- 59:15Speaker 1: has been from been from the n WTF that basically
- 59:20Speaker 1: people would get in contact with them and ask about
- 59:24Speaker 1: people and I think I didn't let them in three
- 59:27Speaker 1: times something like that. Do you recognize though, I feel
- 59:30Speaker 1: like I've seen some of those segments. I'm sure you
- 59:32Speaker 1: have there not laughing with you. Maybe I don't care,
- 59:42Speaker 1: see that. That's the difference between me and a lot
- 59:44Speaker 1: of people. I don't care if you laugh with me
- 59:47Speaker 1: or you laugh at me. Just laugh and enjoy life
- 59:51Speaker 1: is too damn short, and not to enjoy it because
- 59:55Speaker 1: they like, you go on there and they're kinda ain't no,
- 59:58Speaker 1: kind of too And I know exactly when I'm getting
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: into Yeah, they don't. They don't care about calling in turkeys.
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: Uh no, no, no. But it's like, but it's like
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: a thing. It's like it's a thing that's really hard
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: to do, right, It's like it's exceptionally hard to do
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: and you dedicate your whole life to it. But then
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: it's like, look at that dumb redneck. I don't care.
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: That's good. Well, I mean you look at it. This
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: one football, basketball, baseball, ice hockey, whatever it may be.
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: Turkey colling is a legitimate sport. I mean literally whenever
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: I was actively competing in all over the country. I
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: worked out every single solitary day. I was practicing every day,
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: even whenever I was working on the way to work lunchtime,
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: after I got off of work, I was practicing. I
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: was working out, I headed down to where I had
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: calls tune to a small room like this, to a
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: open room, to a metal covered room. You say, calls
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: tuned to those things? Really, yes, Like what's gonna sound
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: good in the studio? What's gonna sound good? And huh
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: there you go? Do you have, um, do you have
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: like a pretty finely trained ear? You know, like, do
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: you hear do you feel that you hear music different
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: than people hear music? Or I'm not going to say music,
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: but I do on uh turkey calling, because now mostly
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: what I do and I try to get out of
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: as much as I can is um, I judge, and
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: I'm literally listening for someone who can sound better than
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: a wild turkey. It would absolutely zero mistakes, and that
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: is very very hard to accomplish because in reality and wildlife,
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: sometimes your worst sounding caller is a he in herself
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: and she'll miss a note. Do notes. What you would
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: say is backwards what written. Maybe it was just kind
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: of like getting your tongue and then being able to
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: talk just like a human. Maion. The other day we
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: were on a previous episode, we were playing funny like
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: a natural sounds of very funny sounding turkeys, or like
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: a hand who yelps seventy sometimes in a row. Yeah,
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: I don't think I've ever heard that's just never stopped,
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: just doesn't stop, It just doesn't And where was this at?
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: Do you remember where that clips on YouTube? I don't
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: remember where it was. You just watched your standing. There
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: wasn't it? Seventies some yelps in a row? It looks
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: like Eastern woods mhm h words. So you were like,
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: you're dyslexic? Yes? To how bad? Like to to? Uh?
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: I don't know if cryppling is the right word. But well,
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: I mean, are you able to sit down and read
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: a book now? Yes? Yeah, but it would probably take
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: me five times is long to read? As you was
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: school hard thirteen years to graduate when it's supposed to
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: take you to half Yeah, nobody knew what it was,
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: but what do they think it was? We're trying? Oh
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: you're dumb, yeah, you know, and and and may I
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: interject here if if you have a child that has
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: that problem, you know now they recognize that they know
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: about it and know how to treat it and know
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: how to help people. Please get them help. Uh you
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: like you had, you were like stigmatized as not being
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: bright correct. I ain't got no book learning. I mean,
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: words will flip and I've learned how to combat it
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: on my own. But letters and words will flip on me.
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: I will still do certain. I'm liable to right to
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: say backwards. But it's only in reading right, like it's
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: not in speaking. Speaking doesn't bother me. So you when
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: you're reading, you'll read, so say it doesn't it doesn't switch.
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: I cannot speil. Learning to spell always remains difficult when
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: you dyslexic. I can't spell with me right now today.
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: I mean I can spell some words, but thank God
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: for that phone. You know how do you? How do
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: you spell sasparilla? You know what? I just? Do you have?
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: Do you have siblings? I have one child. I have
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: three step boulders, all of them girls. You have brothers
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: and sisters? I have one brother? Was he older? Younger?
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: He's older? So he was smart? And you weren't. That
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: was like the way they just think. I'm gonna give
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: Cloude Pittman that compliment. You're crazy. Yes, he was very smart.
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: Uh um trying to move the right. His name is
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: Claude Cloud Yes. Uh, he's ten years older than I am. Ah,
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: that's a big spread between two kids. Oops. Yeah, I'm
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: not gonna tell you that story. But anyway, and uh,
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: and as you're growing up, your dad had uh my
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: dad was a fight for the plumber. But three heart attacks.
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: Oh no, he had four heart attacks, one stroke, and
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: the fifth heart attack killed him. What age are you
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: when that was growing on going on? I would have
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: been in my twenties, late twenties. Was he a turkey hunter?
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: Was not? Claude? No, he wouldn't walk across the street
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: for the biggest buck of the biggest turkey. But if
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: you give it, he was a drafts one, that's what
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: he was. Uh. If you gave him a basket full
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: of parts to put an automobile or a car together, Uh,
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: I mean our a motorcycle, he's your man. And that
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: was his hobby. Uh. Like I said, primarily he was
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: a draft one in Texas who got you into it?
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: Then here we go back in the old days. We
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: had families. I get to preach. I get to stand
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: on my little right now. We had families that did
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: things together. There were no cell phones. It was not
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: the internet. Uh. It was families getting together and doing
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: things together. And they had a little day in Carthridge, Mississippi,
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: the fourth of July celebration. And at that celebration they
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: had a turkey calling contest, a duck calling contest. I
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: hat you throwing contests, archery contest, get contest, uh, Greece
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: peg contest, Greece pole, old time country day competitive, bunch
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: of them. Here you go. Figure that one out. Uh.
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: And my family took me there and I was, oh yeah.
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: In a fishing rodeo, I was twelve years old and
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: I won the fishing rodeo and found out I was
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: two years too old. It stopped at age ten. And
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: I now, don't get this wrong. My dad was a
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: great hunter. When he was a bird hunter, coil back
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: when we had coil in the South, and dearer hunter.
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: He was a dog man. What was we had a
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: thing in our quail since nineteen sixty two? Down three,
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: it's a that's stunning man. How about I think it's
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: like a national declining quail, since it's no doubt, there's
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: no doubt. Yeah, sorry, we're going Okay. I met a
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: general by the name of Jack Dudley who was a
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: natural voice caller and at that point in time was
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: the state champion, and it was like competition, Turkey Colin,
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: I love the Hunt. I'm gonna meet this guy, and
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: I was kind of like a little leech. I attached
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: myself to him, and he meant towards me and brought
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: me up to the point to where through telephone and
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: him doing some very small you know, instructional like the gunner,
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: real sportsman, his club, Turkey Hunt is just starting to
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: be talked about. Okay. I see I graduated in sev
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: it would have been in the late sixties, mid to
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: late sixties is where it would have been. App and uh,
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: I learned we've been after voice and at that point
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: in time, if I heard as saying, give me enough
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: time and I could reproduce it. I can't do it anymore, though,
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: So don't don't go there with me. I'll be throwing
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: up on your mic. Uh. I came back at the
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: age sixteen, and I didn't have junior contests, and you
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: said the Mississippi State Turkey College Championship. And when I
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: walked off the stage, I was a state champion. All
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: the old farts like, I'm an old fart right now,
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: it's going. Where did that little ship come from? What
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: you were sixteen? Sixteen years from? How old are you
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: when you killed your first turkey? Nine? Oh? I see,
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: so you didn't that. So I was curious about you
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: didn't um, you didn't go like turkey calling. You didn't
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: go turkey calling turkey hunting. You went turkey hunting, turkey calling,
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: but you were already interested in turkeys. And the first
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: bird that I ever killed, the statue of limitation should
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: have been gone by then, was illegal. God forgive me,
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: everybody forgive me. I've done some things that I shouldn't
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: have done in my younger days, but I got up
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: when you're nine years old? Everybody does. I got my
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: ask to wark to you. Uh. At thirteen, I started
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: trying to turkey hunt. We'll tell you about the one
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: you got in your nine just out of season or yeah, okay,
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: I ain't gonna tell you everything. I mean, no one's
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: gonna no one's gonna hold that that's more of a
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: parent that's more of a parenting issue than I got
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: my rear end because of that. Uh but at thirteen
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: I started trying to a turkey hunt. Fourteen I was
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: somewhat of a turkey hunter. Fifteen I'm beginning to think
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: I'm a turkey hunter. Sixteen I win the state championship.
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: Uh man, I'm a turkey hunter. God was so wrong.
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: I didn't even have the foundation lay good this that
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: about the time you think you've got her figure it out,
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: you die got it. It's a lifetime, it's ever evolving.
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: I still learn stuff, if not every day, every season,
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: give me a um, give me a turkey hunting tip,
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: whether whether it involves calling or not. Like if you're
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: gonna say, like, you know, looking back on life, I
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: realize the most important thing that I have learned in
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: my career is to pay attention to what is going
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: on around you, not only with your eyes, but more
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: so with your ears. Your ears can tell you more
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: of what is happening then your eyes or anybody else.
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: Are all the YouTube's and everything else it is out
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: there that is available. Example, I'm calling to a bird,
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: he's actively gobbling to me. He's actively getting closer to me.
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: He shuts up. Is he coming or is he going?
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: Because he's doing one of the two things. One rabbit
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: comes running by me real fast. What's going on with
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: the turkey state? No, he's not. Why is he not coming?
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: He spooked him to you sked him and you very much.
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: Yes he did. He figured it out. And predator is
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: chasing a predator is there's a good chance fifteen minutes,
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: I think if he doesn't showed up, a predator is
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: chasing is in the area because he's chasing that rabbit.
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: The opposite. The opposite would apply. If two rabbits come by,
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: then one's a male and one's the female, and you
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: know what's going on. Holds your ground as long as
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: you need to scratching the leaves a little bit, do
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: a little soft yelp, because he's right behind that big
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: brush over there. Another and the running rabbits are just
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: a breeding pair. Pay attention to that blue jay, that magpie,
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: whatever it may be. Crows, those are talking to you
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: and telling you what's going on and what's happening in life.
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: Just like Clay's trying to get you better with a
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: crow call. You're welcome. Uh, you can pay you for that.
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: He paid you for that. No, no, but he bright no,
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: he wanted to do that. Seriously, you can use his
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: crow call right here in turkey hunting. Here's your real
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: quick example. H Why do you guys put it in
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: backwards and flip it. I'm motioning it. That's a diaphragm call.
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: I just said, of singing that gobbler's mind and put
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: a lot more realism into it. But now on, if
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: you notice a helld the crow call up, I am
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: acting as if a crow is aggravating that he in
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: turkey down here. It could be done with a coil whistle.
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: It could be done with the squirrel just jumping up
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: on the side of the tree and doing a short bark,
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: not a long bark, and not the old fussing, you know,
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: because that means predator. So he's paying attention to everything
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: that's going on around you. We'll only step you ten
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: steps ahead. Colin ain't worried about it. Heck, they can
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: sound like you. Oh I've proven that, dude, Yeah you have.
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: They got no. Yeah, It's like I've got Clay's digs
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: in there. So I'm gonna leave it alone. After that,
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: because I even heard really good callers, really good callers
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: say it's Collins ten percent of the game. Do you
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: think it's higher, Natal, because I've seem like this dude
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: guys uck. There there there situations, This dude guys uck.
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: It's really I've never been in the woods. You I'm
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: sure i'd be this the same or better. But this
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: dude guys uck. I don't know, man um, it makes
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: it seem like Collins a way higher than ten percent.
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: There are situations, yes, but you give me a good
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: woodsman who has great woodsman ship ability and has the
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: basic college of a wild turkey that can go and
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: that's all he can do as far as a call,
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: I'll take him ten times over. I will a world
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: champion caller who is strictly into the sport and there's
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: not even that I know, uh, strictly to win a
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: contest and not hunt. I'll take that Wood's been ten
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: times over someone who can call the best in the world.
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: You know, he might take even over that who's is
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: a person that uh lives on a property and has
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: a shipload of trailer cams out because they're like they
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: hear a gobble, like if I'm with my friend Doug
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: on his place. Guy, he's trumped around the st patch
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: ground his entire life. Right. I hear gobble and I'm like, oh,
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: it's over yonder dogs, Like, oh, you know where that is.
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: He's standing by that one tree that he usually goes
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: snarre over that other tree. Yes, let's run over there, right,
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: And I'm like, is that good turkey hunting? Is that
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: just survey? That's the new young farts? Mm hmm. I'm
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: not saying it's by that. I'm not saying that. I
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: don't think it's bad. It's just different. It's there, you go,
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: it's different. But I feel like, but by a second,
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: now you have impressed me as an outdoors one. You
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: have impressed me as someone who understands whitsmanship. What has
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: that person who is strictly relying on their cameras, what
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: have they learned? Well? I think that they have the joy.
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: I think that they feel the joy of discovery the
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: same way that I would feel the joy of discovery.
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: I think that they like that they're they're finding things
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: out that in the process pleases them. That makes you
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: wanna get your turkey call out, that makes you just
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: want to shut up. That's fine, that's not my way. Yeah,
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: I don't want to steal their humanity. That's fine. I'm
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: being nice. I'm not saying I wouldn't use that. No,
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: but you bet your tongue metaphorically to the point where
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: you almost put your turkey call in h You're like,
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: the only way to not reply is for my turkey
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: call in my mouth. Get uh, get Samantha. Uh. I
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: want you to get her. You can, you can get
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: anyway to make a call a sound. Now, Okay, we're
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: gonna we're gonna do something sweet hard, don't you do
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: my favor? I want you to lean your head backwards
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: and open up your mouth and let me look inside
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: your mouth. Oh okay, now you know what I'm doing. Chicken,
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: she's got tonsils. I am seeing the size of the
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: roof of her mouth. The one major problem that adults
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: have is that a frame or a turkey call is
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: too large. Okay, there are frames that are small, frame
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: calls that was set up into the roof of your mouth.
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: Do you want to try the hardest thing that there is,
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: which is a diaphragm. No, that's what we're here for. Okay, Well,
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: I want to understand first what the diaphragm calls for. Specifically, Okay,
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: the diaphragm calls what you see me right here with Yes,
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: it is an app Put that sucker down. It is
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: an apparatus. He wants to get you one out of
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: that chew ten, He's guy. There, Now are the holy grail? Uh?
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: The object is is for that call to become part
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: of the roof of your mouth. Do not swallow. It
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: hurts when it goes down. It hurts words when it
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: comes out. Oh yes, you got them stuck in your throat.
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: Oh yes, huh man, I've never even come close to that.
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: They think I must be not trying hard. I'll say
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: it hurts worse when it comes out when it goes down,
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: So be very careful. Have you ever played with a
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: diaphragm before a little bit? Don't you throw all that away? Okay?
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: One that taught me. I don't care what do you say?
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: Throw it all away, like all this prior knowledge, all
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: the bad habits. I gotta grab something. He's gonna grab
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: a palate extender. Okay, he just produced the bottle of water.
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: That's that's for something a little bit later. That's your
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: that's your choo spit bottle? How many more of those
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: you got in there? I have one, let me see one.
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: I just want to follow along. He's rummaging through a bag,
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: dig and Diaphragm calls out. It's like Mary Poppins. We
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: don't know how how far the bag goes a fall
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: crystal lamp shad. He's got a tooth, He's got a
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: toothbrush in that bag. He's got a giant sack of calls.
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: All right, so Sam gets a bright, new shiny package. Call.
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: The first thing I want you to do, say the
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: word chuck, chuck, chuck. Say it again, check, say it's
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: third time. Say it now when you say it the
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: fourth time? Want you to tell me where the tip
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: of your tongue is at chuck it? Where's it at
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: the roof of my mouth? It was not put down.
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: Take the tip of your tongue and put up in
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: the roof of your mouth and try to say chuck.
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: And so it's like behind my teeth, right at the bottom,
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: behind your teeth. Can you feel how your tongue has
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: a curvature to it? You're right, yeah, chuck, yeah, chuck.
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: It's hard to tell where your tongue is. It's hard
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: to describe where your tongue sits. You know, it's not
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: like an out of me. He's of an amy focus. Now,
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: what I don't want you to do is I want
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: you to go, not saying the word, but go chu
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: chuck push some are out there, you go? There you go.
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: Now I want this frame is too big for me.
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: I can solve that. That might be a little bit large,
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: but just the way I want to go in the
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: roof of your mouth. Now I want you to do.
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: Keep going. Push it up a little bit tighter in
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: my mouth, I remember in my mouth. Yes, you wo
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: are to go in between the tongue and the collar. Okay,
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: you see how your mouth is kind of open? I
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: cast it. Okay, y'all, her mouth is a little bit open.
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: Try to narrow it a little bit more. Oh I
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: had I had my tongue in the wrong plasure. Okay,
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: but you're well on your way right there. You do
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: this for me. Oh you're gonna spit and be liable
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: to choke, and you're liable to do everything else just
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: for the fune. Okay, there you go here? How you
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: getting you're making a higher note? Think of the kid
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: that has gotten a piece of balloon, y'all, and I'm
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: holding this, I guess he was horizontally on each end
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: and stretching it. The more that he or she will stretching,
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: the higher the note. Now let's taking the mind and
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: if I move that vertically, that's what you're doing with
- 1:22:44Speaker 1: your tongue. You're stretching that piece of rubber. The basic
- 1:22:48Speaker 1: kend note is a two note, a high and low
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: yelp yep, yep, yep. So you're That's the reason why
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: I use the analogy of the word chuck, because it
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: starts out with your the mid part of your tongue
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: on the collar and then comes off of it. You
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: may even drop your jaw slightly if you are losing air,
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: and you are losing air on the side, press and
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: throw that in into an exaggerated version what you're talking about.
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: Let's slow down mm hmm, just for the phone of it.
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: This is not a real good beginner's call. Not a
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: good beginner call. When I got in my hand, see
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: if that feels more comfortable, It might be easier, it
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: might be harder as a lot smaller. Correct, where is
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: it supposed to sit in my mouth open the roof
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: of your mouth. I think that call is gonna be
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: too Let's go back to the other. Okay, everyone small ones.
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: You actually sounded good. I'll get it after people use them.
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: I usually to give him a comple minutes and I
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: feel like everything died. But it's not warm anymore. We
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: can survive that h on my tongue up in the
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: roof of my mouth. Correct, you go pump that tone
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: and drop that job? Am I still saying chuck? Basically,
- 1:24:56Speaker 1: it will evolve saying once you understand it, once you
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: get to feel of it. I never I've never, I
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: want to point out, I've never taught anyone in my
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: life to even try. But I remember um that I
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: think someone has explained the chuck thing because like, uh,
- 1:25:14Speaker 1: you have to move your mouth, your mouth and or
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: either drop your jaw. Yeah, And that's like a hard
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: right because you're so focused on like holding that thing there.
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: You got like your jaws moving around, and I thought
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: that you weren't supposed to move your mouth. No, but
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: that's what it was hard. That was like a thing
- 1:25:36Speaker 1: for me when I was first get was like I
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: don't understand because I can't, like I can't move my mouth,
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: so I'm holding the damn thing. Some people can't. It's
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: a confusing guy. If you need to drop your jaw.
- 1:25:46Speaker 1: This reason why I was saying, drop your jaw. That
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: helps you get that second note. There's a note. I
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: think it's hard because yeah, I feel like you have
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: to hold everything together. But then you're also how do
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: you drop your jaw and keep your time every time
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: you talk? Watch me, I'm talking to you right now,
- 1:26:18Speaker 1: aren't I look at my job. It's not my jaw
- 1:26:21Speaker 1: dropping right now, it definitely, but you're not holding this
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: in your mouth. Who do I get another one? Try
- 1:26:28Speaker 1: that quite little stack Christmas? Now, before you've asked, you
- 1:26:34Speaker 1: just played the piano. I just handed you a trumpet. Well,
- 1:26:37Speaker 1: I could have handed you a trombone or a set
- 1:26:39Speaker 1: of drums or whatever. What I'm telling you are different
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: calls are made by all manufacturers different ways to produce
- 1:26:48Speaker 1: a particular sound. And I compare it to music because
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: that is a musical instrument that you have in your mouth.
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: Try the yellow call well real quick. So they have
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: different shapes. The tape on the exterior part is the same.
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: I had you a basic double readed Nick call. I
- 1:27:09Speaker 1: now handed you my favorite call. That is a three
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: weed batwing with a point in zero zero three thousands
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: rubber on it. And I won't tell you the stretch.
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: That's my secret. I to put the call in your mouth,
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: just go, now go. Is that call sealed in the
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: roof of your mouth? It looks to me like he's
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: floating all over the place. To push it up to
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: the roof of your mouth. Now, you probably need to
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: cut that call down a little bit. Oh h yeah,
- 1:27:50Speaker 1: like no air, No, oh, that goes Like I said,
- 1:27:55Speaker 1: the air goes in between the tongue. There you go.
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: You don't want present, you don't want any error to
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: ride over the top of the call has to be
- 1:28:06Speaker 1: funneled between the tongue and the call. I was told
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: that it shouldn't be in the roof of the mouth. No,
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: it goes yea yeah. I mean I have seen people
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: clamping in their teeth. I don't like that way, and
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: they're limited and actually get it always out of it.
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: I mean, think about the Indian seem they used to
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: peach leaves, you know, like awesome, don't drop it quite
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: as much. Hey, go and I do that quickly. Not
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: quite there? You go, go, go, go, go, go, give
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: me fifting the loaves in a row, give me seventy seven. Okay,
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: on your way. Think about this, if I told you
- 1:29:02Speaker 1: look just right here, or if I open my mouth
- 1:29:05Speaker 1: up a little bit more, Hi, try to talk on
- 1:29:09Speaker 1: my hlide open. I'm not funneling the air over the collar.
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: You can create a sound chamber with your mouth. So
- 1:29:17Speaker 1: you are constantly opening your mouth up completely. You're letting
- 1:29:21Speaker 1: the air escape around the collar. Now that you've learned
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: to sell it, learned to use your mouth, don't do
- 1:29:31Speaker 1: anything else but a yep period until you can put
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: that call in your mouth or either one of those
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: calls in your mouth, and do exactly what you want
- 1:29:42Speaker 1: to do. Don't start trying to learn how to clock,
- 1:29:44Speaker 1: how to pray, how to fly and cackle, how to
- 1:29:46Speaker 1: keep a bull crap. Build your base foundation. Just like
- 1:29:51Speaker 1: a human being can use one word and say three
- 1:29:55Speaker 1: totally different things. I can go okay, all right, I
- 1:30:00Speaker 1: can go Hi, all right, I can go hey. You
- 1:30:07Speaker 1: can do that all with one sound, just like a
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: human can do it all with one word. So just
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: get comfortable to learn how to get the sound uh
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: right each time. You can go to the internet. Don't
- 1:30:19Speaker 1: think you gotta copy somebody, but they'll give you that rhythm. Hey, presty,
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: can you be a favorite the hey hey? Things interesting
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: to me? Can you give me the yelp equivalent of
- 1:30:30Speaker 1: each hay? Okay, I'll do the hey hey. Then there's
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: he and then there's uh. How do you don't go?
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: It's like a seductive It's like a seductive hey, like, Hey,
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: that's seductive. That's been kind of gets hand to put
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: body into it. That's a string. But Kenny walking down
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: the beaches of Florida, let me hear with that one again.
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: Oh my god, look at her? Huh or him? Are
- 1:31:22Speaker 1: there more? Haz that's your three basis. That's three basic
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: So if you if you really learn one thing, like
- 1:31:28Speaker 1: if if Sam's gonna learn one thing, she should learn
- 1:31:31Speaker 1: that the basic foundation of everything, like I told her.
- 1:31:35Speaker 1: Until until you can put pick up a collar, put
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: a collar in your mouth, whatever it may be, Until
- 1:31:42Speaker 1: you learn control over that collar, that that collar is
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: doing exactly what you wanted to do. You do not
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: need to move on and try to learn either a
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: different collar and or either a different sound. You build upon.
- 1:31:58Speaker 1: That's what you do because in reality, that basic hand
- 1:32:03Speaker 1: yep is the most heard note I said, heard by
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: human beings. Note that his Actually, you don't hear all
- 1:32:10Speaker 1: the crazy noises they're making when they walk through the woods.
- 1:32:12Speaker 1: You don't hear the soft stuff. My favorite type of
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: calling is what I call very relaxed. That little we
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: we were one is one of the weirdest noises. Yeah,
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: but I'm totally relaxed. There's no aggression, there's no predators here.
- 1:32:38Speaker 1: I'm not excited. Uh, you're just a turkey. I'm a
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: turkey completely. I'm whispering sweeting nothings into his air. I
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: might even occasionally, unlike, mix a little something in there
- 1:33:11Speaker 1: with it, just to pump it up, to say, you're
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: the sexiest thing ever sing in my life. Come on
- 1:33:17Speaker 1: over here, I want to date you. I just had
- 1:33:20Speaker 1: a quick question. So if you weren't able to do
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: the diaphragm calls, like this is my second season turkey hunting,
- 1:33:26Speaker 1: very new, what else would I do? Then you could
- 1:33:29Speaker 1: use a box call. You could use a pot call. Uh.
- 1:33:35Speaker 1: Most people would tell you to go with a pot
- 1:33:40Speaker 1: call because of this versatility, but for the ease of use,
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: I still like a box call really well. I mean,
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: if it's a decent box call, I know, I had
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: to paint this picture and I'm gonna slide the lid over,
- 1:33:59Speaker 1: then I won't want to just take one finger. If
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: it's a it's a If it's a decent box called
- 1:34:07Speaker 1: the box call, it is going to do the work
- 1:34:09Speaker 1: for you. Okay. Most people take a bots call and
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: they grab it way too hard, Okay, ma'am. Yeah, I said, yeah,
- 1:34:19Speaker 1: I never thought about that. I'm holding the box and
- 1:34:21Speaker 1: just simply taking a finger and moving the lid. That's correct.
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: And you've got a complete year. Now did you hear
- 1:34:36Speaker 1: a difference in the sound, so you learn how to play?
- 1:34:40Speaker 1: We'll call this a piano. Now watch the chicks to
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: have and listen pass out over the sand. I just
- 1:34:52Speaker 1: got more excited and all it is. I put a
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: little bit more pressure on it, and I completed it
- 1:34:57Speaker 1: all the way over from the right side to the
- 1:34:59Speaker 1: left side. Yeah, play the left play the left side. No,
- 1:35:03Speaker 1: it doesn't matter. Pick the lead up? What MHM to do?
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: The one finger there? You okay, don't pick it up.
- 1:35:17Speaker 1: Don't pick up always look ship. Watch how farm going?
- 1:35:24Speaker 1: You get no eggro on it? Man? Yeah, I'm not
- 1:35:34Speaker 1: coming all the way over here. Perfect perfect, but that'll d.
- 1:35:47Speaker 1: I said, that's perfect, but that'll d. Don't go beyond
- 1:35:50Speaker 1: that yet. If I was scouting for a turkey, what
- 1:35:54Speaker 1: would that be like? The noise that I would make
- 1:35:56Speaker 1: to try and find them, I would always start off
- 1:35:58Speaker 1: with a locator call for Now, what that means is
- 1:36:02Speaker 1: is I'd use an all who to crow called pleaded woodpecker. Uh,
- 1:36:07Speaker 1: you get an actual dip out. Now, let's tell everybody
- 1:36:12Speaker 1: no words. I'm going my limit, but I can still
- 1:36:15Speaker 1: do anything I need. Well, that's a bit, little one.
- 1:36:23Speaker 1: My face mask has a hole cut in it right here,
- 1:36:27Speaker 1: so you spit keeps probably sanitized around the edge. Well, now,
- 1:36:31Speaker 1: whenever he gets in real close and they can't spit,
- 1:36:33Speaker 1: I have been known let it run day. So let
- 1:36:36Speaker 1: me ask you no turkey question. And I want to know,
- 1:36:38Speaker 1: can you run a diaphragm with a dip in? That's
- 1:36:43Speaker 1: that's incredible, that's incredible. I should have you on a
- 1:36:47Speaker 1: talk show. It might even it might even sound better,
- 1:36:51Speaker 1: it might opens it up a little bit. But I
- 1:36:55Speaker 1: do not want any of you kids out there to
- 1:36:57Speaker 1: put this crap in your mind. No, we're telling all time.
- 1:37:01Speaker 1: Maybe you might make the cover of that magazine someday
- 1:37:03Speaker 1: de Deficient Auto. Probably if I might to cover that,
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: I'd be probably without a lip. Um. I want I
- 1:37:09Speaker 1: want to ask you turkey question, and it has to
- 1:37:10Speaker 1: do with Turkey column. Do the do an alarm? Put? What? Like?
- 1:37:20Speaker 1: What is it about? What is it about that? You
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: know what I'm saying? Like, what is it about that sound?
- 1:37:26Speaker 1: That's so like, oh, you know when they have other
- 1:37:30Speaker 1: sounds that are like it's just is it like it's isolated.
- 1:37:33Speaker 1: It's sort of like the intensity and isolation of it. Basically, Yeah,
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying, because it's not that different
- 1:37:38Speaker 1: from a normal sound. But but you can turn that
- 1:37:41Speaker 1: that if if I had a gobbler sixty yards in
- 1:37:43Speaker 1: front of me and a hand came in from the
- 1:37:47Speaker 1: left and all of a sudden she puts you know
- 1:37:53Speaker 1: what I'm gonnaday like, turn it back into something turning
- 1:38:06Speaker 1: into cutting because cutting in a put are so close
- 1:38:09Speaker 1: together you can't hardly tell the difference. Yeah, that's what
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: That's what That's what I was getting at. It's like
- 1:38:12Speaker 1: it's funny that but it rings in your ear after
- 1:38:14Speaker 1: you hear the couple of times you're like like that's it. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:38:19Speaker 1: But then someone's sitting there wouldn't know how disappointed you
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: were unless you told them. Well, I always if something,
- 1:38:26Speaker 1: if the situation happens, if it's a hen, because yeah,
- 1:38:30Speaker 1: you're from the at ease, but I'll do it to
- 1:38:33Speaker 1: a gobbler if he came then and oh you'll oh yeah,
- 1:38:38Speaker 1: I'll start cutting on top of him, and I'm not
- 1:38:40Speaker 1: liable to even gobble at him on top of his alarm.
- 1:38:43Speaker 1: Put it works about one out of every But in
- 1:38:49Speaker 1: the other scenario you're talking about, you were basically she's
- 1:38:53Speaker 1: gonna she comes in and bust you. It's like that's
- 1:38:55Speaker 1: over with, But you gotta gobbler off in some other direction,
- 1:38:58Speaker 1: and you're trying to put his into ease. But now
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: I've turned into a very aggressive hand, even spooking and
- 1:39:08Speaker 1: sometimes purposely to get her out of here so she
- 1:39:12Speaker 1: won't go to it got you? I mean if if, if, if,
- 1:39:17Speaker 1: if you've already got your arm around or passed that
- 1:39:19Speaker 1: with a are you married before you were married with
- 1:39:24Speaker 1: a good looking girl, and there's another one over honor.
- 1:39:27Speaker 1: Are you gonna leave her and go to her I
- 1:39:30Speaker 1: got everything I want right here. You're married, Yes, I long,
- 1:39:34Speaker 1: you've been married about twenty two years. Two. We don't
- 1:39:37Speaker 1: keep up with something like that. Let me see your ring.
- 1:39:44Speaker 1: That's my dad's ring. Yeah, it's jeweled. Always get a
- 1:39:49Speaker 1: little bit of diamonds, and I mean very small diamonds.
- 1:39:52Speaker 1: But I just feel honored to wear. I do want
- 1:39:56Speaker 1: to say this. And we started this while ago a
- 1:39:58Speaker 1: little bit. In the old days, families did things together.
- 1:40:02Speaker 1: We went to we went fishing, we went hunting. We
- 1:40:04Speaker 1: had an old camp that had no running water that
- 1:40:07Speaker 1: you pumped like that that you used a five gallon
- 1:40:10Speaker 1: bucket to go to the bathroom and went out into
- 1:40:12Speaker 1: the woods, you know, and those were great times. My
- 1:40:16Speaker 1: dad was a big hunter, big fisherman, setting trot lines
- 1:40:20Speaker 1: or for flatheads. Um uh. He's one of the few
- 1:40:24Speaker 1: people that I know that on the cove your eyes,
- 1:40:28Speaker 1: I know of him killing three hen quail in his life.
- 1:40:33Speaker 1: He would pick out the cocks and shoot the mails only. Um.
- 1:40:38Speaker 1: We were big deer dog hunters back then. When I
- 1:40:40Speaker 1: was a kid, my mama went with us. It was
- 1:40:42Speaker 1: a family outing. My thanksgivings, my Christmas is, uh, we're
- 1:40:46Speaker 1: spending the woods with a pack of dogs and Uncle Louis,
- 1:40:50Speaker 1: Aunt Duvi, Uncle Dutch, you know, down on my cousin.
- 1:40:53Speaker 1: It was it was. It was a family thing. We
- 1:40:55Speaker 1: did things together and it wasn't only blankety blank cellphones. Yeah,
- 1:41:01Speaker 1: you feel that's going away. I feel like it's almost
- 1:41:04Speaker 1: all gone away. I don't see it, do you, Yeah,
- 1:41:08Speaker 1: I feel like I see a version of it. The
- 1:41:11Speaker 1: best thing that a young person. I don't think you're
- 1:41:13Speaker 1: gonna you know, I don't think you're gonna the best
- 1:41:17Speaker 1: you're gonna shoot for is a version of it. You're not.
- 1:41:20Speaker 1: You're not gonna like wage a successful war against technology. Well,
- 1:41:24Speaker 1: but the best thing in the world to do is
- 1:41:26Speaker 1: from time to time, these kids need to put these
- 1:41:28Speaker 1: cell phones down in their iPods and all that crap
- 1:41:32Speaker 1: and go for a walk in the woods if nothing else,
- 1:41:35Speaker 1: and see God's greatest creation, and that is the outdoors.
- 1:41:38Speaker 1: I agree whole hardly man and Mama and Daddy needs
- 1:41:41Speaker 1: to go with them are people, which is what I am.
- 1:41:44Speaker 1: I mean. My my greatest challenge this year is one
- 1:41:48Speaker 1: for my thirteen year old granddaughter Caitlin to be able
- 1:41:51Speaker 1: to harvest her first bird with me. Uh that's what
- 1:41:53Speaker 1: you're gonna go do right now. As soon as I
- 1:41:56Speaker 1: get back, I'll start hunting with her. I want her
- 1:41:59Speaker 1: to get a bird bird, and I won't Carlin Tom
- 1:42:02Speaker 1: Kelly to be able to harvest a bird. Do you
- 1:42:04Speaker 1: have any restrictions on what your granddaughter well harvest? You?
- 1:42:09Speaker 1: Are you like y'all gotta get a big tom or
- 1:42:11Speaker 1: as a Jake? Okay? Or how do you know there's
- 1:42:16Speaker 1: are you against jake shooting? I will not purposely shoot
- 1:42:20Speaker 1: at Jake. And in the study of Mississippi and Jake
- 1:42:22Speaker 1: is illegal except for the youth. And Caitlyn like an
- 1:42:28Speaker 1: extra bird nine kids. That seems like a little unreasonable
- 1:42:31Speaker 1: man if he's got to cook them, as we say,
- 1:42:33Speaker 1: if he's got to cook a bird on his chest,
- 1:42:35Speaker 1: uh killing. But we are hunting Houdini. We have a
- 1:42:42Speaker 1: particular bird, she named him, that we went in on
- 1:42:48Speaker 1: because of COVID seventeen times last year. Now you gotta
- 1:42:52Speaker 1: realize on Oh you mean because you were stuck hunting
- 1:42:55Speaker 1: the same spot close to home. Yes, so you just
- 1:42:57Speaker 1: had to keep working the same bird who's like not
- 1:42:59Speaker 1: having and sometimes he's on my land, sometimes he's on
- 1:43:02Speaker 1: somebody else's land. No, here's a very good tip for
- 1:43:06Speaker 1: adults trying to get the youth into it. Uh, make
- 1:43:10Speaker 1: sure that they are very comfortable and have maneuverability with
- 1:43:17Speaker 1: that gun. I had her in a twenty gauge and
- 1:43:21Speaker 1: it was a youth twenty gauge and even though I
- 1:43:24Speaker 1: was toting in and out of wood, for didn't carry
- 1:43:26Speaker 1: a gun. Uh. It was too heavy for her. She's
- 1:43:29Speaker 1: small and petique and like I had a bird in
- 1:43:32Speaker 1: gun ranging I think three different times. Uh. One time
- 1:43:35Speaker 1: we had him at twenty one steps. I'm looking at uh,
- 1:43:39Speaker 1: a true trophy bird with over an inch and a
- 1:43:42Speaker 1: half spurs. Because I'm looking at the spurs going, oh
- 1:43:45Speaker 1: my god, you know, killing sweedie killing. Give me that gun, kid, Nah,
- 1:43:51Speaker 1: she's earned, she's earned this bird. Uh. And she couldn't
- 1:43:55Speaker 1: move the gun. I tried to make her move the gun.
- 1:43:57Speaker 1: Of course you know what happened, see you by. So
- 1:44:00Speaker 1: we had three opportunities. Uh. She did have a shot
- 1:44:04Speaker 1: on Granddaddy's land, um, and it was a little far
- 1:44:11Speaker 1: and I wouldn't with her. And here again trying to
- 1:44:15Speaker 1: hold the gun on the side of the tree. She missed.
- 1:44:18Speaker 1: But that's okay, you know, what I mean. Everybody misses
- 1:44:21Speaker 1: from time to time. It happens. Uh. But we had
- 1:44:24Speaker 1: a good time, and she's earned his bird. But whoever
- 1:44:28Speaker 1: comes up that is a legal bird killing shot him,
- 1:44:34Speaker 1: she's earned him. She deserves a turkey. Do you feel
- 1:44:37Speaker 1: that bird is still alive? Judini is still alive. You
- 1:44:41Speaker 1: saw him over the winter. I've got pictures up. Yes,
- 1:44:44Speaker 1: you one of those guys. I have two cameras, you
- 1:44:51Speaker 1: sweetheart tree. He always goes over to that tree. No
- 1:44:57Speaker 1: comment comes through here every day, every day, ten fifty
- 1:45:00Speaker 1: seven in front of my cameras are down right now,
- 1:45:07Speaker 1: and he's not He's not there. He wasn't there whenever
- 1:45:09Speaker 1: I left. Because Steve, you had a situation last year.
- 1:45:12Speaker 1: I think right where you're like, well, where we hunting turkeys?
- 1:45:17Speaker 1: Or where we hunting? What follows this fence? Because what
- 1:45:21Speaker 1: we did was sitting next to a fence. Well, Uh,
- 1:45:25Speaker 1: here's my ruse in turkey hunting. I hunt legally, marley
- 1:45:32Speaker 1: and ethically correct. I just can't help them. My morals
- 1:45:35Speaker 1: get a little bit low during turkey season. I'm with you.
- 1:45:39Speaker 1: That little devil gets on my shoulder and whenever he
- 1:45:42Speaker 1: kicks my rear end um. I do not have time
- 1:45:46Speaker 1: to tell you all the stories that eventually I will
- 1:45:48Speaker 1: put in a book. But I am the I called
- 1:45:52Speaker 1: myself the new breed. I've got a lot of the
- 1:45:54Speaker 1: old school in me, and I've got a lot of
- 1:45:56Speaker 1: the new school in me. Cutting run or sit in
- 1:45:59Speaker 1: one spot, I can do it whatever the physically, I
- 1:46:03Speaker 1: can't do everything on one. When you say, like the
- 1:46:06Speaker 1: that when your turkey hunting against the bast you mean
- 1:46:08Speaker 1: and there's uh, there's a desire to to to to
- 1:46:13Speaker 1: to do it and get the thing. How about three
- 1:46:16Speaker 1: years on one bird? Years? You spent three years on
- 1:46:21Speaker 1: one bird? One? You know what's funny is I don't
- 1:46:25Speaker 1: look at him that way. I know, like you know,
- 1:46:26Speaker 1: deer and stuff like that for sure, but yeah, I
- 1:46:29Speaker 1: just don't see turkeys that way. You're the cut run person.
- 1:46:33Speaker 1: Oh yeah, that's why I want you to Mississippi. You
- 1:46:35Speaker 1: might get that, but you might not. Meaning if let's
- 1:46:39Speaker 1: say there's some bird, I'm like, oh, you know, I've
- 1:46:40Speaker 1: tried to get him a bunch of times, and I
- 1:46:42Speaker 1: see some other one over there. I but just very
- 1:46:47Speaker 1: easily turned to that one. You know, I mean, I
- 1:46:49Speaker 1: don't I'm not saying I won't, but I'm gonna come
- 1:46:53Speaker 1: back to him, because that is the teacher. Sure, that
- 1:46:59Speaker 1: is where you get your education from, not from me,
- 1:47:03Speaker 1: not from the internet, but from the bird himself. He
- 1:47:06Speaker 1: will teach you how to hunt. Those are the kind
- 1:47:10Speaker 1: that whenever you harvest them, you want to reach down,
- 1:47:13Speaker 1: grab ahold of his head, open up his mouth and
- 1:47:16Speaker 1: go and give him mouth to mouth, resuscitation in him.
- 1:47:20Speaker 1: Come back to life, and let's do it again. Teach
- 1:47:22Speaker 1: me some more. Those are the birds that I have more.
- 1:47:25Speaker 1: I have respect for all wildlife, but those are the birds,
- 1:47:29Speaker 1: you know, the hoodinis uh, the statue of Liberty bird,
- 1:47:33Speaker 1: historical bird. Yeah, and he's bird sneaky pete you know, yes, yes, yes,
- 1:47:40Speaker 1: to the point where he went back trying to look
- 1:47:42Speaker 1: for something else. Uh huh. But god, did you get
- 1:47:46Speaker 1: a lesson? Where do you kill him or not? Didn't
- 1:47:47Speaker 1: you get a lesson? Did you learn some stuff? Yeah,
- 1:47:50Speaker 1: it's wonderful. You know, let's bring him back to life.
- 1:47:53Speaker 1: If we couldn't do it all over again, teach me something.
- 1:47:55Speaker 1: I never kill him. He'd go, he'd go get by,
- 1:48:00Speaker 1: to go get by the tree and not do anything
- 1:48:02Speaker 1: done that. He just wants to get him. He's like,
- 1:48:04Speaker 1: I don't care if I call him. It wasn't like
- 1:48:06Speaker 1: he wanted to call him. He just wanted to get
- 1:48:08Speaker 1: him without going The one thing that isn't gonna work
- 1:48:10Speaker 1: is calling him, So that's gonna go sick. Without going
- 1:48:13Speaker 1: through the whole story, I'll give you the finale. I
- 1:48:17Speaker 1: cut off a piece of reed cane, go to breeze
- 1:48:21Speaker 1: up underneath the water and get in a creek bed.
- 1:48:25Speaker 1: The first thing I did is I sucked up little
- 1:48:28Speaker 1: stuff is inside a piece of red cane, and I
- 1:48:30Speaker 1: had to stick my head up underneath the water and
- 1:48:32Speaker 1: coughs so I wouldn't make too much noise. Then I
- 1:48:35Speaker 1: starkled down because during squirrel season, I remembered there was
- 1:48:39Speaker 1: a little point on the creek and he was on
- 1:48:41Speaker 1: the sandbar storkle down to that little point. He's my
- 1:48:47Speaker 1: head up and looked and he's way too far. I
- 1:48:50Speaker 1: knew if I called to him what he would do.
- 1:48:52Speaker 1: He would haul but the other way because he had
- 1:48:55Speaker 1: been hunting. So I hunted so hard and so had
- 1:48:57Speaker 1: other people. So what I did is I took my
- 1:49:01Speaker 1: fingers and I started slicking leaves up in the air.
- 1:49:06Speaker 1: And clucking and purring and scratching in the rhythm that
- 1:49:09Speaker 1: a hen does. So then it's usually whenever he looked
- 1:49:12Speaker 1: towards the sound, he saw those leaves and thought there
- 1:49:15Speaker 1: was a real hen just on the other side of blood.
- 1:49:18Speaker 1: He walked out my gun barrels inch and a hals
- 1:49:20Speaker 1: bird bird, and I killed him a lot more to
- 1:49:25Speaker 1: that story. Do you want to carry decoys into the woods?
- 1:49:31Speaker 1: You're not afraid of decoys? No? Not? I mean afraid
- 1:49:36Speaker 1: you don't. You don't disapprove of him, not hmm. Now
- 1:49:40Speaker 1: if Preston goes by himself, which is a rarity now, uh,
- 1:49:44Speaker 1: I normally have like tell chaser in my backpack. Uh.
- 1:49:50Speaker 1: And that's about it. I like one on one, just
- 1:49:53Speaker 1: me and him when he's made by myself. But since
- 1:49:57Speaker 1: I hunt with so many different people to accomplish difference things, yes,
- 1:50:03Speaker 1: I'm gonna carry here. It's you've got to carry one
- 1:50:05Speaker 1: decoy and one decoy. Only take a hand when you
- 1:50:09Speaker 1: you know how you want to get your granddaughter a bird? Yes?
- 1:50:13Speaker 1: What do you think she'll get out of it? Like?
- 1:50:14Speaker 1: Why do you want to get your granddaughter a bird? Well? One?
- 1:50:18Speaker 1: She has worked so hard too, she is studying Mother
- 1:50:23Speaker 1: nature itself and appreciating everything that happens. Like I pointed
- 1:50:29Speaker 1: out to her one morning, look at the spider with
- 1:50:33Speaker 1: the dow still on it, going back and repairing his
- 1:50:37Speaker 1: spider web. And then the sun comes through and all
- 1:50:41Speaker 1: those little droplets of water turns into prisons. She pointed
- 1:50:46Speaker 1: out to her. You know, it's not all about the
- 1:50:48Speaker 1: killing part. It's about seeing, studying, enjoying, and appreciating Mother nature.
- 1:50:54Speaker 1: The possum that comes by, Watch the possum, Watch what
- 1:50:57Speaker 1: he does. The skunk. Listen, sweetheart, to that blue jay
- 1:51:02Speaker 1: that's over there. He's about seventy yards away from us
- 1:51:06Speaker 1: right now, whispering why people, How do you know that
- 1:51:12Speaker 1: he's not gobbling right now? I said, that blue jay
- 1:51:15Speaker 1: is telling me he's right there. It's where he's at,
- 1:51:18Speaker 1: or the crow are in this part of country. Magpie,
- 1:51:22Speaker 1: you know letting. You know. So she's studying, whether she
- 1:51:26Speaker 1: realizes it or not, she's studying Mother Nature and appreciating
- 1:51:30Speaker 1: everything that got Almighty made for us. Because that's the hunt.
- 1:51:35Speaker 1: Is the compliments to you on your show. You don't
- 1:51:39Speaker 1: show us a hunting show. You take us on a adventure,
- 1:51:45Speaker 1: is what you do with your show, which is why
- 1:51:48Speaker 1: I really enjoy it, because I'm going on an adventure.
- 1:51:51Speaker 1: I'm a part of that. Not only are we hunting,
- 1:51:55Speaker 1: but we're learning about historical things that are there. Uh
- 1:51:59Speaker 1: habits so different ePol and I feel like I'm there
- 1:52:03Speaker 1: with you, And then I get a bonus at the end.
- 1:52:07Speaker 1: I get to see you do what we should all do,
- 1:52:10Speaker 1: which is enjoy or at least try our harvest and
- 1:52:14Speaker 1: eat it. By the way, I want one of your books.
- 1:52:16Speaker 1: I hear you've got some cookbooks I want. I want
- 1:52:19Speaker 1: one four leaf from here. You a whole stack of them. Okay,
- 1:52:23Speaker 1: I'll give you my address when I ain't giving it
- 1:52:24Speaker 1: out over there. That can we? Uh? What's your your
- 1:52:29Speaker 1: go to turkey? Your recipe fried turkey breast? Uh? Take
- 1:52:36Speaker 1: your breast out, cut it, uh, cross grain batteries, a
- 1:52:41Speaker 1: little buttermilk. If you like a thicker batter on it,
- 1:52:44Speaker 1: you can dip it in butter milk. If you like
- 1:52:46Speaker 1: a thinner bat batter, you can dip it in egg
- 1:52:49Speaker 1: milk and a little bit of water. I do spice
- 1:52:53Speaker 1: that also. I'm a Tony Sashery's guy. I'm like a
- 1:52:57Speaker 1: Creo type, you know. Flavor to it in two ways,
- 1:53:01Speaker 1: deep fried and just in it like fried chicken or
- 1:53:04Speaker 1: what I find out a lot of people like, as
- 1:53:07Speaker 1: I make a Southern gravy out of the same flower
- 1:53:10Speaker 1: because it's already got spices in it that I spice
- 1:53:13Speaker 1: the turkey up with. Take a turkey out, make a gravy,
- 1:53:17Speaker 1: then take and put the turkey breast back in it,
- 1:53:19Speaker 1: and just cover it in mushrooms and onions, kind of
- 1:53:22Speaker 1: like a liver. And I don't eat liver or heart, uh,
- 1:53:25Speaker 1: kind of make it like a liver recipe. And then
- 1:53:29Speaker 1: I have some biscuits and poured over biscuits and know,
- 1:53:32Speaker 1: whatever else you want to go with it. Or I
- 1:53:34Speaker 1: take it and cut it in the strips the same way.
- 1:53:37Speaker 1: It's a soy sauce base. But I'll use soy sauce oil.
- 1:53:41Speaker 1: When you think you've got enough pepper, put some more
- 1:53:43Speaker 1: pepper into it. When you flee with that, add a
- 1:53:46Speaker 1: little bit more pepper with oil, um, dry mustard, um,
- 1:53:51Speaker 1: a little bit of a red red wine vinegar. Beat
- 1:53:55Speaker 1: all that up, sit it in it, let it soak,
- 1:53:57Speaker 1: for it doesn't take along because that's a light meat
- 1:53:59Speaker 1: about mints. Throw it on a grill and eat it
- 1:54:03Speaker 1: when it's coming out to grill, standing around the grill.
- 1:54:05Speaker 1: Those are my It's an important part of the recipe. Well,
- 1:54:10Speaker 1: you don't need to cool cool down. It needs to
- 1:54:12Speaker 1: be eating hot. That's my two favorite ways. Screw all
- 1:54:17Speaker 1: this bacon stuff. I'm sayth on fride fried to grill it. Alright,
- 1:54:23Speaker 1: Preston Pittman, how do people find videos? Have you calling
- 1:54:25Speaker 1: and whatnot? YouTube? Just google me. You'll you'll find okay,
- 1:54:30Speaker 1: you'll find me in Adopper for the spit drum and
- 1:54:33Speaker 1: gobble contest. Um. You'll see me not shaking David Letterman's hand,
- 1:54:39Speaker 1: which I had already shook it before I went out there. Now,
- 1:54:42Speaker 1: if I type in um, if I start typing your
- 1:54:45Speaker 1: name in, you know what the auto Phil puts in?
- 1:54:47Speaker 1: What gobbling? That's what I don't already have to finish
- 1:54:51Speaker 1: your name and it already it already wants the auto
- 1:54:52Speaker 1: pil Preston Pittman gobbling. What's this trumpet situation? Trumpet different, dude, No,
- 1:54:59Speaker 1: no know your trumpet call? Okay, trumpet call. It also
- 1:55:03Speaker 1: wants the auto Phil Preston Pittman trumpet. A trumpet call
- 1:55:08Speaker 1: is likewise to a wingbone. Okay, I'm looking at it
- 1:55:12Speaker 1: right now. Okay, I got one somewhere, but anyway, Uh,
- 1:55:16Speaker 1: it's the call that is not used that much anymore,
- 1:55:20Speaker 1: and sometimes in Turkey call, and especially when you're hunting
- 1:55:23Speaker 1: public land. It's that different Sam that he has not heard.
- 1:55:27Speaker 1: All beings in life. I'm not saying they're intelligent and
- 1:55:33Speaker 1: reason things out, but all beings in life have the
- 1:55:38Speaker 1: ability to pass traits down. And here's my analogy. I
- 1:55:42Speaker 1: heard you say you went ice fishing yesterday. Should have
- 1:55:45Speaker 1: called me? Uh? And it was not anyways, Okay, he
- 1:55:51Speaker 1: was mostly trying to get my kids to stop putting
- 1:55:53Speaker 1: their gloves and mittens down the ice hole. I've got
- 1:55:56Speaker 1: four grand young guns within walking distance of me. I'm
- 1:55:59Speaker 1: used to that. Uh. Have you ever been to a
- 1:56:02Speaker 1: pond or lake has never been fished? Yeah, okay, you
- 1:56:06Speaker 1: could probably saw a bear hooky all. I could take
- 1:56:09Speaker 1: this turn feels a little. I could probably take that
- 1:56:13Speaker 1: right there and put a hook on it, catch fish,
- 1:56:14Speaker 1: you agree? Okay, Now two years later and it's being
- 1:56:17Speaker 1: fish more. I could take this same thing because now
- 1:56:22Speaker 1: I've been fishing it for a couple of years. I've
- 1:56:23Speaker 1: been throwing that's correct. Now I need to paint some
- 1:56:27Speaker 1: red on there and maybe put a spinner in the
- 1:56:29Speaker 1: beginning of it. You agree with that. You just said
- 1:56:32Speaker 1: that a dumb fish with the brain the size of
- 1:56:35Speaker 1: p has the ability to learn, be educated, and pass
- 1:56:40Speaker 1: traits down. My second analogy is the Deep South, whenever
- 1:56:45Speaker 1: I first started bow hunting with my nineteen dollar and
- 1:56:49Speaker 1: bought from auto Lett. It's no longer in business. Uh
- 1:56:53Speaker 1: Recurve Autolet. That was the name of the store. They're
- 1:56:58Speaker 1: never looked up. Back then we had the old timey
- 1:57:02Speaker 1: where bear hugged the tree or what I used to
- 1:57:05Speaker 1: call the death trap the old baker stands. It's no
- 1:57:07Speaker 1: longer in business. And then we copied them and made
- 1:57:10Speaker 1: them and they're never looked up. Now, what happens Mama
- 1:57:14Speaker 1: when she comes walking by more like a bird doll
- 1:57:17Speaker 1: looking up the tree. That baby is learning from her,
- 1:57:21Speaker 1: But now there is danger from above. So animals have
- 1:57:24Speaker 1: the ability to pass trades down. Which is why I
- 1:57:27Speaker 1: told you I can carry you to an easy place,
- 1:57:32Speaker 1: but I would love and I will carry you to
- 1:57:34Speaker 1: an easier place in Mississippi, but you'll tell me to
- 1:57:39Speaker 1: a hard spot too. I'd like for you to experience
- 1:57:42Speaker 1: that at least one day, even in an easy place
- 1:57:45Speaker 1: is a little bit tougher. But those birds have been
- 1:57:48Speaker 1: hunted for so long, for so many years, they have
- 1:57:52Speaker 1: gotten educated. It's what they have. And the Deep South
- 1:57:56Speaker 1: it's a heritage now, the turkey hunt. And I like
- 1:58:00Speaker 1: what it used to be, nothing even close. The beauty
- 1:58:04Speaker 1: of my career is I've got to see this from
- 1:58:08Speaker 1: basically the ground floor and turned into what it's turned
- 1:58:11Speaker 1: into now. Used to you made a turkey call. Hell,
- 1:58:14Speaker 1: you used an aluminum can when d friends first started
- 1:58:18Speaker 1: coming out and you put tape on them. They might
- 1:58:20Speaker 1: last the whole hunt. It might not, you know what
- 1:58:25Speaker 1: I mean. The book that I gave you Ran Jolly's book. Uh,
- 1:58:29Speaker 1: you'll learn like what his daddy used to used to
- 1:58:32Speaker 1: carry parts with him to repair his call during a hunt.
- 1:58:37Speaker 1: That's real. I couldn't get through the hunt. Yeah, that's real.
- 1:58:41Speaker 1: President is talking about a book on Memories of Spring
- 1:58:44Speaker 1: by Ryan Jolly, which he gifted to me. Well, Ryan
- 1:58:48Speaker 1: sent that to you. Oh sorry, Roy gives me all right, man,
- 1:58:54Speaker 1: thank you, thank you very much for what you do.
- 1:58:59Speaker 1: And they, as the scene says on here, keep doing
- 1:59:03Speaker 1: what you're doing. You're doing good for me, You're doing
- 1:59:07Speaker 1: for every good for everyone in this sport and in
- 1:59:11Speaker 1: this industry. You are passing it on and you are
- 1:59:14Speaker 1: bringing people into it who have never hunted, and that's
- 1:59:17Speaker 1: a beautiful thing. Stave. Please keep in. I appreciate you
- 1:59:20Speaker 1: saying that, and I appreciate the game call gift. You're
- 1:59:23Speaker 1: very welcome, all right. I still want to carry you
- 1:59:25Speaker 1: hunting incision though. Oh I want to go done. I
- 1:59:28Speaker 1: want to be like but carried. I ain't gonna touch you.
- 1:59:32Speaker 1: I'll put you in my day side by side. No,
- 1:59:36Speaker 1: I'll come next spring. Okay, done, and then next June
- 1:59:40Speaker 1: for the hand grab it. That's gonna be the fun part.
- 1:59:44Speaker 1: I'll do it done. I'm gonna put my calendar now. Yes,
- 1:59:48Speaker 1: you can come to a wrong he's got the scar
- 1:59:54Speaker 1: h that's all right. I'm the wimp anyway. I go
- 1:59:56Speaker 1: out with a long sleeve shirt and I can't use
- 1:59:59Speaker 1: the word that they use on me or what they
- 2:00:01Speaker 1: call me. I'll tell you when we're off air, but
- 2:00:04Speaker 1: I'm liable to have I'll have gloves on. You didn't
- 2:00:07Speaker 1: have any gloves, dummy. They broke you in the rock.
- 2:00:11Speaker 1: Some well, gloves cow, but come up leather gloves. Well,
- 2:00:14Speaker 1: we will take care of both of us, y'all. You
- 2:00:17Speaker 1: can come to I don't care. Thank you seriously. You
- 2:00:22Speaker 1: know who will be the best one of those two females.
- 2:00:27Speaker 1: Females will listen to you. They don't have the echo
- 2:00:31Speaker 1: that males. How they will. They will take instruction. I
- 2:00:35Speaker 1: much rather teach a female than I would have mailed.
- 2:00:37Speaker 1: I was a fishing guide for a decade and you're
- 2:00:40Speaker 1: very true there They listened to you. So uh may
- 2:00:45Speaker 1: I tell a quick story? Please? I hope not under
- 2:00:49Speaker 1: the adults mind this, but this is this is my
- 2:00:52Speaker 1: mission statement besides passing it out. You know Number one,
- 2:00:57Speaker 1: Please kids staying in Scoog get the best education that
- 2:01:01Speaker 1: you can possibly get. You see, have problems, find someone
- 2:01:04Speaker 1: that can help you fix those problems. Like I did
- 2:01:08Speaker 1: not get respect everybody that is out there, no matter
- 2:01:14Speaker 1: what they do. I know. I'm gonna use a doctor
- 2:01:17Speaker 1: as an analogy. Everybody wants to be that doctor. But
- 2:01:21Speaker 1: you know what, he or she that doctor cannot really
- 2:01:25Speaker 1: do their job this day in time without a nurses practitioner.
- 2:01:28Speaker 1: You know what, that nurses practitioner cannot do his or
- 2:01:32Speaker 1: her job without probably an R E N. None of
- 2:01:36Speaker 1: those people can do their job if there is not
- 2:01:38Speaker 1: a secretary. They're keeping them straight. And guess what, there's
- 2:01:43Speaker 1: also a janitor. This got to clean, to commode, sterilize
- 2:01:47Speaker 1: the equipment, uh, empty the garbage, whatever it may be.
- 2:01:52Speaker 1: Respect them all. Who has the most important job, even
- 2:01:56Speaker 1: that lonely little janitor that nobody looks at, is make
- 2:02:00Speaker 1: it possible for everyone to be able to do their job.
- 2:02:04Speaker 1: They carry as much importance as they can. As my
- 2:02:07Speaker 1: daddy used to tell me, He says, son, I don't
- 2:02:11Speaker 1: care if you're a ditch digger, but by God, you
- 2:02:13Speaker 1: better be the best ditch digger that there is out there.
- 2:02:17Speaker 1: Everybody serves a function, everybody serves a purpose. Everybody who
- 2:02:21Speaker 1: does a good job deserves respect. And I'll end it
- 2:02:26Speaker 1: with this. There is a God in heaven and Jesus
- 2:02:29Speaker 1: Christ is my Lord's savior. Amen. Preston Pittman, Thank you
- 2:02:34Speaker 1: very much, Thank you. Thanks Preston,
