Latest / Patriots Unfiltered / Training Camp-Cast 7/28: Pats in Pads, Red Zone Focus , CB Leaves Early, Full Day 5 Recap
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Day five of Patriots training camp, and the pads came on,
- 0:02Speaker 1: the heats back up, the intensity picked up as well.
- 0:04Speaker 1: We're here to break it all.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Down for you.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Ready to the Patriots training camp cast. We were coming
- 0:17Speaker 1: to you from the side that you let stadium high
- 0:19Speaker 1: above the practice fields, where the Patriots just completed about
- 0:21Speaker 1: an hour and a half session fully padded for the
- 0:24Speaker 1: first time this summer. Intensity picked up a little bit,
- 0:27Speaker 1: got into team drills. They started out at the high thirties.
- 0:30Speaker 1: They worked their way in towards the goal line a
- 0:32Speaker 1: little bit. Uh finally, Paul little something more to chew
- 0:35Speaker 1: on as the pads came on.
- 0:36Speaker 3: Yeah, a lot of running game work, and I'm gonna
- 0:38Speaker 3: just sort of step aside make way because I know
- 0:40Speaker 3: this is where my boy Evan likes to shine with
- 0:43Speaker 3: the trenches reports. But I did think there was some
- 0:45Speaker 3: good physicality on both sides of the line.
- 0:47Speaker 2: That was great.
- 0:48Speaker 1: If you were going crazy, I'll practice you live for
- 0:50Speaker 1: this stuff.
- 0:51Speaker 4: This is it right here.
- 0:52Speaker 1: Let's start with one on ones because we can't get
- 0:53Speaker 1: to team periods until we did.
- 0:55Speaker 3: Our live showed. I tried to tear up the boss
- 0:58Speaker 3: man says, no, we're not.
- 0:59Speaker 5: Going to with the very perfectly executed wamblock by Brock
- 1:03Speaker 5: Lampy right in the A gap.
- 1:05Speaker 4: It was beautiful and.
- 1:06Speaker 5: I saw that, I was like, hell, yeah, real football
- 1:08Speaker 5: is back.
- 1:09Speaker 2: We're talking.
- 1:10Speaker 1: We're talking real football, of course, But like I said,
- 1:12Speaker 1: everything started off with some one on ones down there.
- 1:14Speaker 1: We were all trying to focus on the offensive line
- 1:16Speaker 1: and the defensive line because that's has a little bit
- 1:18Speaker 1: more I guess application to real football slightly other than
- 1:22Speaker 1: the poor cornerbacks trying to cover the receivers down here
- 1:24Speaker 1: at the other end. But overall, just what was your
- 1:26Speaker 1: big takeaway from watching those one on ones as we
- 1:28Speaker 1: got started.
- 1:29Speaker 5: Well, I'm sure a lot will be made about the
- 1:31Speaker 5: rep with Keon White against Will Campbell where Keon did
- 1:33Speaker 5: get the better of Campbell there, But I know you
- 1:36Speaker 5: want to do one on ones, but I'd want to
- 1:38Speaker 5: just mention that once we got to team Campbell looked
- 1:40Speaker 5: a whole lot better than he did in that one rep.
- 1:42Speaker 4: So we'll get to that in the second.
- 1:44Speaker 5: But overall, I thought the offensive line held its own
- 1:48Speaker 5: in that drill.
- 1:49Speaker 4: I thought mike On Winn, who had a nice win.
- 1:51Speaker 5: Cole Strange had a nice win on Milton Williams that
- 1:54Speaker 5: caught the eye as well, and even City So put
- 1:58Speaker 5: a guy.
- 1:58Speaker 2: On the ground have had the best individual rep. Yeah.
- 2:01Speaker 5: So I thought that they held their own there. You know,
- 2:03Speaker 5: a couple wins there for a chase on. I mentioned
- 2:06Speaker 5: the one by Keon White against Campbell. But it was
- 2:09Speaker 5: good to see those drills. And I actually not to
- 2:11Speaker 5: fingerwag the people that are watching the other stuff, but
- 2:15Speaker 5: the on line D line stuff has real translation to games,
- 2:18Speaker 5: whereas there's not a very whole lot of instances where
- 2:21Speaker 5: corners are truly on an absolute island with no safety
- 2:25Speaker 5: help and no pass rush and nothing whatsoever.
- 2:27Speaker 4: For those wide receivers.
- 2:29Speaker 5: But the on line D line stuff, that's translatable stuff
- 2:32Speaker 5: to the to the actual eleven on eleven.
- 2:34Speaker 3: Yeah, I thought the lines might both the first dance
- 2:37Speaker 3: second groups that we got to see. I thought they'd
- 2:39Speaker 3: consistently moved the line of scrimmage. I thought there was
- 2:42Speaker 3: some push in the run. Game wasn't all perfect, but
- 2:44Speaker 3: I agree with them, and I thought once they got
- 2:47Speaker 3: into team periods, all of those guys collectively looked better.
- 2:50Speaker 1: Yeah, it felt to me a little bit like a
- 2:51Speaker 1: continuation of Saturday, just as far as the back and forth,
- 2:54Speaker 1: some competitiveness we saw, you know, some of the plays,
- 2:57Speaker 1: the defense getting some stops in the backfield, and Gibil
- 2:59Speaker 1: Peppers made made out a little pop that stood out
- 3:01Speaker 1: even up here as well. But once things did get
- 3:04Speaker 1: into team periods, we were looking at first and second downs,
- 3:07Speaker 1: like I said, starting into the high red zone and
- 3:08Speaker 1: then they worked their way down. Paul, just what did
- 3:11Speaker 1: you take away from from some of those drills as well?
- 3:13Speaker 2: So, like I said, I thought the run game was
- 3:15Speaker 2: pretty solid.
- 3:16Speaker 3: I thought Stevenson had a couple of runs that looked
- 3:18Speaker 3: like to me he might have been able to get
- 3:20Speaker 3: into the end zone under normal circumstances. Trevion Henderson a
- 3:23Speaker 3: little bit less so, but his quickness is hard to miss.
- 3:26Speaker 3: He had one really nice cutback on a play that
- 3:29Speaker 3: you know, I didn't think there was much there initially,
- 3:31Speaker 3: and he made a nice cut to it. So I
- 3:33Speaker 3: did think that the run game, I will point out
- 3:36Speaker 3: before people start to get well, the offensive line had
- 3:39Speaker 3: a better day.
- 3:39Speaker 2: The pass protection is still a work in progress.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Yeah, still a working a lot of running today.
- 3:45Speaker 5: We can get to that in a second. But I
- 3:46Speaker 5: just got a gush about well Campbell for a second.
- 3:48Speaker 5: I thought in the team periods he was just outstanding.
- 3:51Speaker 5: I mean, just moving the line of scrimmage, caving guys
- 3:53Speaker 5: in on down blocks.
- 3:55Speaker 4: Executing combos.
- 3:56Speaker 5: A Remondre cut right off his left hip for what
- 3:59Speaker 5: we thought was probably a touchdown watching it from up here,
- 4:02Speaker 5: he got Milton Williams once or twice on the ground.
- 4:05Speaker 5: You know, that's that's pretty hard to do. So we
- 4:07Speaker 5: knew coming into this elite run blocker in college, maybe
- 4:12Speaker 5: a little bit more seasoning necessary in pass pro. And
- 4:15Speaker 5: I think that's held serve here through the first five
- 4:18Speaker 5: days of camp for Will Campbell. His run blocking stuff
- 4:21Speaker 5: might he might already be great at that, Like that
- 4:23Speaker 5: might be right out of the gate a strength of his.
- 4:25Speaker 5: And I thought that he was really terrific throughout the
- 4:28Speaker 5: entire team period. I mean, this is your first padded
- 4:30Speaker 5: practice and you're already putting frontline NFL players into the ground.
- 4:35Speaker 4: That's a really good sign.
- 4:36Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm excited to see that once we progress into third,
- 4:39Speaker 1: third down territory, and then we've got a little bit
- 4:41Speaker 1: more of what might be the challenges towards Will Campbell guys.
- 4:44Speaker 1: A number of housekeeping things we got to bring up.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Of course, the headline from this practice was sorry, Christian
- 4:50Speaker 1: Gonzalez limped off, did not return for practice, did go
- 4:53Speaker 1: under his own power, wasn't carted off, but never a
- 4:55Speaker 1: great sign to see your number one cornerback go down
- 4:57Speaker 1: like that and not finish practice.
- 4:58Speaker 3: Yeah, obviously cause for concern when you get you know,
- 5:01Speaker 3: frontline guys like that that don't make it through practice.
- 5:04Speaker 3: Evidently was the first playoff team. We kind of didn't
- 5:07Speaker 3: really see the rep. I think he went against Booty
- 5:11Speaker 3: in the one on ones that didn't go really well,
- 5:13Speaker 3: and then you know right away on the first team REP.
- 5:17Speaker 2: He didn't practice the rest of the way.
- 5:18Speaker 3: So that's something that we're gonna have to keep an
- 5:20Speaker 3: eye on it, you know, if it's he was grabbing
- 5:22Speaker 3: his legs, so we don't want to speculate what the
- 5:24Speaker 3: injury is. We'll just have to keep an eye on that.
- 5:26Speaker 3: But some good news in the injury front. Mike's guy
- 5:29Speaker 3: Jalen Polk made it back on the field today. Caught
- 5:31Speaker 3: a touchdown pass and one of the red zone drills
- 5:34Speaker 3: very late from Drake May.
- 5:37Speaker 2: So he's back in uniform.
- 5:38Speaker 3: Josh Minkins is a was one of the rookie safeties
- 5:41Speaker 3: on NFI. He also was back in uniform, so some
- 5:45Speaker 3: good and bad. Obviously, Gonzalez is going to be the
- 5:47Speaker 3: story of the day, though I know people are going
- 5:49Speaker 3: to lose their minds over it. Let's sort of hold
- 5:52Speaker 3: back on that and wait to get more information.
- 5:54Speaker 5: Yeah, it did look like he was maybe grabbing at
- 5:56Speaker 5: the back of his leg a little bit in like
- 5:58Speaker 5: a hamstring area. I know, we don't want to speculate
- 6:00Speaker 5: too much, but that, to me, even though those things
- 6:03Speaker 5: can linger a little bit, is the best case scenario.
- 6:06Speaker 5: Like it wasn't It didn't look like it was a
- 6:07Speaker 5: major injury to my from my perspective because of that.
- 6:10Speaker 5: But we'll see what happens with him and without him
- 6:12Speaker 5: and Carlon Davis out there. You know, there was some
- 6:14Speaker 5: depth issues there at corner, So Alex Austin stepped up
- 6:18Speaker 5: Marcella's dial, who I actually thought had a really nice
- 6:20Speaker 5: practice out of here that was very active.
- 6:22Speaker 4: In the run.
- 6:22Speaker 2: Physical, physical guy in the run, not.
- 6:24Speaker 5: Playing in that Nickel spot, which I think is interesting
- 6:27Speaker 5: just from a body type perspective, a little bit bigger,
- 6:29Speaker 5: a little bit more physical than a Marcus Jones. Marcus
- 6:32Speaker 5: Jones was also out there as well, so it seemed
- 6:34Speaker 5: like it was a lot of Austin dial Marcus Jones.
- 6:37Speaker 5: After Gonzill left practicing with no day we didn't have Davis.
- 6:40Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, well you guys mentioned it. Davis kind of
- 6:42Speaker 1: a day on day off. We haven't really seen him
- 6:44Speaker 1: since the walkthrough, so Cole Davis is still dealing with something,
- 6:47Speaker 1: even though coming off that FI list at Juvalani Tavai
- 6:49Speaker 1: who left practice on Saturday, he was not active, might
- 6:52Speaker 1: have had a step back from the calf injury that
- 6:54Speaker 1: he suffered. Otherwise, kind of similar rotations just to say,
- 6:58Speaker 1: along the offensive line with Morgan most Is coming in,
- 7:01Speaker 1: Garrett Bradbury coming in at the start, and then Jared
- 7:03Speaker 1: Wilson as well as Tray Jacobs getting some work. So
- 7:06Speaker 1: those rotations continue getting not a ton of work all
- 7:08Speaker 1: first and second down in the red zone, but they
- 7:10Speaker 1: got the pads on. The last thing I want to
- 7:12Speaker 1: bring up, guys, is just an interesting development in the
- 7:15Speaker 1: Kicker competition, if you want to call it that. Parker
- 7:17Speaker 1: Romo getting all of the reps today, all I believe
- 7:19Speaker 1: was six total reps and he made them all, and
- 7:22Speaker 1: he made all six of them. So Borgalis on the sideline,
- 7:25Speaker 1: maybe watching a little bit, maybe trying to ratchet up
- 7:27Speaker 1: the pressure a tiny bit on the rookie. But interesting
- 7:30Speaker 1: opportunities for Romo today.
- 7:31Speaker 3: Yeah, ranging from a bout thirty three to fifty two yards,
- 7:34Speaker 3: So they weren't all little chip shots. You know, you
- 7:36Speaker 3: start at that extra point level, you work your way out.
- 7:39Speaker 3: All you can do is make the kicks that you try.
- 7:40Speaker 3: And you know, it's been I don't think there's been
- 7:43Speaker 3: a ton of reps for either kicker, but the ones
- 7:45Speaker 3: that they've had, I think Romo has been the more
- 7:47Speaker 3: accurate guy so far.
- 7:48Speaker 5: Yeah, it'll be interesting to see if tomorrow is a
- 7:50Speaker 5: Andy Borgollas day and they kind of go that direction
- 7:52Speaker 5: with it instead of splitting the reps because you only
- 7:55Speaker 5: have so much time to work on field goal and
- 7:57Speaker 5: special teams. So maybe it's six today for Romos, six
- 8:00Speaker 5: tomorrow for Bergalis and they go that way the rest
- 8:03Speaker 5: of the way.
- 8:04Speaker 4: Can we talk about the fullback.
- 8:05Speaker 1: Again though, or please go if you want to work
- 8:07Speaker 1: while more referencing, go ahead, brock Lampy.
- 8:08Speaker 4: The brock Lampy was out there leading the way full back.
- 8:11Speaker 5: Just a couple of other guys quickly that stood out
- 8:14Speaker 5: on in the trenches.
- 8:16Speaker 4: I thought that Caden Wallace had a few nice blocks.
- 8:18Speaker 5: Had left guard, and he's been working prenominantly at guard
- 8:22Speaker 5: in this camp and not much at tackles. So the
- 8:24Speaker 5: left guard competition, I would say right now, it's between
- 8:28Speaker 5: Cole Strange, Caden Wallace, and potentially Jared Wilson as well.
- 8:31Speaker 5: Jared Wilson had another issue with a snap with Drake
- 8:35Speaker 5: May and so maybe.
- 8:38Speaker 4: I don't know if center, you know, centers a lot
- 8:39Speaker 4: on you. You got to snap the ball, you gotta be
- 8:41Speaker 4: have it between the ears.
- 8:43Speaker 5: Maybe guard is the way on the field for him,
- 8:46Speaker 5: faster than center at this point. And then I thought
- 8:49Speaker 5: Chason was really active in this practice too. On the
- 8:52Speaker 5: line of scrimmage, I had him down for two sacks.
- 8:54Speaker 5: I got Morgan Moses on one, which is a little
- 8:56Speaker 5: bit on my radar with Moses, but I thought Chason
- 8:58Speaker 5: looked nice out there.
- 9:00Speaker 1: Well, yeahs saw Chase on after practice working with Trey
- 9:02Speaker 1: Jacobs a little bit, given us some tips about you know, pats,
- 9:05Speaker 1: just a reminder. You know, Jacob's only, I guess in
- 9:07Speaker 1: his third season here, so still developing.
- 9:09Speaker 2: So we are on to.
- 9:10Speaker 1: The second week I guess of training camp. Well, we're
- 9:12Speaker 1: gonna call it, but pads are staying on for tomorrow
- 9:14Speaker 1: as well as Wednesday, so there's gonna be plenty more
- 9:16Speaker 1: to digest.
- 9:17Speaker 2: Stick with us.
- 9:18Speaker 1: We'll wrap up all of these practices for the Patriots
- 9:20Speaker 1: Training Camp cast. Hey this is Deuce. Thanks for tuning
- 9:25Speaker 1: into the show.
