- 3:19special investigator, Johnny Dollar to Home Office, Washingtonian Life Insurance Company, Hartford,
- 3:23Connecticut. The following is an accounting of expenditures during my investigation of the
- 3:29Terrified Tuine matter. Expense a gun aem one one forty three dollars and fifty
- 3:38cents air fare and incidentals between Hartford and Kuala Lumpur. I checked into the
- 3:45Coliseum Hotel and then walked over to Batou Road and the offices of George Allister,
- 3:50the rubber and tinbroker who doubles in brass as you're a Malayan representative.
- 3:57Oh who if your climate donna of no man in full possession of his God
- 4:01different senses, you'd never live out here. They don't understand why you came.
- 4:05While he wrote about the possible forthcoming murder of some policy holders Aliston,
- 4:10Yes, a Langley business, not a rupt This talk about murder, dismal
- 4:15obsession, of disordered mentality. He wrote that letter early in the line of
- 4:18duty. You don't think there's anything to it, Oh hesly lonss Jungles,
- 4:24breaking Langley down he's a weakling to start with, no moral fiber. Turn
- 4:29that fan up. Yes, well it is disintricating under the strain of trying
- 4:33to run that rubber plantation. And they're having any attempts to kill Langley or
- 4:38his wife. No sheer delusion, concept of a diseased mind. They're checked
- 4:42with the police, no reports made, No jangles got him that In the
- 4:46filthy terrorists, his plantations and terrorist country sundown some forty five miles north of
- 4:53here, everything mortal koalas in terrorists domain, filthy lighters, ambushing traffic,
- 4:59attacking it is plantations, murdering, burning, slashing rubber trees. The old
- 5:03man's in his right mind would live in this fulfi country. Yeah, how
- 5:08do I get out there? High? Now? I'm a car. You're
- 5:11on the way to travel through the jungle taking home. John is up,
- 5:14might be grown up by landminds. I won't take any responsibility. I'm not
- 5:17asking you too. Do you make an investigation? If you have two dollars,
- 5:23don't get you anywhere at a waste time, then go back home to
- 5:27the States. How of this fulfie climate beastic country? Huh? If you
- 5:32hate this country so much? Alistair why do you stick around? They're a
- 5:36good question. I myself that many times always came up with the same answer,
- 5:42what's that making too much money? Well, that sounds reasonable. Expense
- 5:55account at them too, one hundred and twenty dollars ranald Over nineteen four nine
- 6:00four, completely equipped with armor plating and bulletproof glass. The jungle trip was
- 6:05hot, but fairly uneventful, and only the barbed wire enclosure and the armed
- 6:11Malayan guards at the entrance to the Sundown plantation gave evidence that this was anything
- 6:15but a quiet, peaceful land. But afternoon, Twine, may I have
- 6:20your identification? Please? Yeah? Sure? Here it is Blandalla. So
- 6:29I had to stick with j One Langley. That's the general idea here.
- 6:33I think perhaps it would be wise for you have to stick with Jan Crawford.
- 6:38First. Crawford to see he is a plantation of a CF one.
- 6:43Why should I talk to him instead of Langley? Lan Langley is not well
- 6:46at the moment. He is still suffering from the shock. What shock is
- 6:50that his wife's fe she had disappeared well in life case, If you don't
- 6:58mind, I think I'll see mister Langley through the screen door. I could
- 7:28see part of the interior of Langley's house. There wasn't a sign of anyone
- 7:32around, but it looked cool and inviting in there. Who're going to bet
- 7:36to pass up? You take quite a more step into this house and I'll
- 7:40kill you. Wow. Thanks for the warning. I mean it, every
- 7:44word of it. You're not going to murder me the way you did meet
- 7:46her? No, not a bit of it. You didn't expect me to
- 7:49be waiting here ready for you when you came sneaking in, did you No?
- 7:54I'll bet you didn't. Your women all counts Langley, and I suppose
- 7:58you put that thing down and start talking sense. I know your kind sneaky,
- 8:05tricky, hard to get me off balance. Look, my name's Dollar.
- 8:09I'm an insurance investigator washingtony and Life sent me out to go lying.
- 8:13George Alister told me they wouldn't do anything about it, wouldn't send the man
- 8:16halfway around the world to help me. He was right. I have my
- 8:20identification here to prove it. You have identification? How do you think I
- 8:26got past those guards at the gate? Here? Take a look for yourself.
- 8:33What do you do? Thanks? M thirty eight caliber Webley. Isn't
- 8:45it all right, go ahead, use it. I think i'd rather have
- 8:48a drink first, the liquid cany thanks. You might take a good look
- 8:54at those papers while I'm mixing one. But these papers say you're you're Johnny
- 9:03Dollar, an insurance investigator working for Why. I'm sorry, don it,
- 9:09dreadfully sorry. Please accept my apologies. Are you gonna now suppose you tell
- 9:18me what this is all about? It's been a nightmare Dollar, constant threats
- 9:24against my life, terrorist raids, living in fear, twenty four hours a
- 9:28day, sleeping with a gun at my side. I've seeing this plantation ruin
- 9:33before my very eyes, and help us to stop it. It's no wonder.
- 9:37I'm not responsible for my actions, Langley. It's not your plantation I'm
- 9:43interested in right now. It's your wife, Maida. Well, she's disappeared,
- 9:46as I say, yes, yes, of course she has good good
- 9:50lord man? What do you think's got me all upset this way? I
- 9:54was beginning to wonder, let's start with your wife and go on from there.
- 10:00What makes you think that's the trouble here, mister Langley? Trouble One
- 10:03of the yard men told me he heard a shot fired there was accidentally.
- 10:07Guns don't go about there without a reason. Mister there's nothing to get excited
- 10:11about, Crofid. So Dollar is an insurance investigator, insurance investigator, so
- 10:16the vultures are gathering for the face before the body's even cold. That's enough,
- 10:20Corovid. Nobody's asking you for your opinion. I don't need to be
- 10:22asked about something like this. If Missus Langley was my wife, or wouldn't
- 10:26be wasting my time talking to insurance men. Then let me remind you that
- 10:28Missus Langley is natural wife. Even though I'm certain that two of you wish
- 10:33you were, Were you dirty or the air Crawford haul it. You've got
- 10:37anything to say, suppose you tell it to me. Yes, that's a
- 10:41good idea of Crovid instead of mine saying anything. Why don't you tell mister
- 10:45Dollar or you know about the disappearance of my wife? That might help clarify
- 10:48things in a hiday. Okay, I'll be outside in the chief, mister
- 10:54Dollar. I'll take you on a personally conducted tour. That way you'll be
- 10:58sure of getting the truth from one. There's part of your answer. Yeah,
- 11:03how's that for the Albius, isn't it? Crawford's in love with my
- 11:07wife. They've been cutting on behind my back for months. Everyone has a
- 11:11motive for trying to kill me. It's Crawford, yeah, or it could
- 11:16be the other way around. It's been going on for three or four months
- 11:30now, mister Dollar, it's crazy idea. Mister Langley has it somebody's trying
- 11:33to murder him and his wife. What makes you think somebody isn't? He
- 11:39says he gets threatening notes to telephone calls, only nobody else has ever seen
- 11:43them or heard him talking to anyone. Uh huh? Now, what about
- 11:46us? Is Langley? Now? He was driving her nuts, walking around
- 11:50afraid of a shadow carrying a gun every place he went, spying and heard
- 11:56me trying to find out if something's going on between us and I was there.
- 12:00If you knew missus Langley, I wouldn't even think of asking that question.
- 12:03But I don't, and I'm still trying to find out what happened to
- 12:07him. Hell, I'll show you. Hey, you see where the bob
- 12:15wire has been cut, Those young rubber saplings have been slashed a terrorist grade.
- 12:20Looks like it, doesn't it. What's this got to do with missus
- 12:22Langley? The guard who met you at the gate bandar. He found the
- 12:26fence and trees that way of making his rounds. This morning he also found
- 12:31a sleeve torn from one of Missus Langley's blosses, was covered with blood.
- 12:35And no one has seen missus Langley since last night. You figure the terrorists
- 12:39took her with him. I think mister Langley staged the whole thing to make
- 12:43it look like that. Yeah. Why he's in debt, a fifty thousand
- 12:48pound note on the plantations come and do in sixty days, his wife's insurance
- 12:52covering up nicely. Well, it's an interesting theory. Let's go back.
- 12:58Huh, where's mister Langley bender? He has left Lampasa some ten minutes ago?
- 13:20Why did he say? Or no? SA? I only know that
- 13:24one Langley received a telephone call and then he left. Did you leave any
- 13:28message for me? I do not know if it was a message, SA,
- 13:33But he made some strange content concerning ourself or was it? He was
- 13:39rather excited. I did not get all the words, but it was something
- 13:45about giving you something to really investigate. And that was all, yes,
- 13:48Sah, that was all. Then he took a fortified colorba automeric from the
- 13:52gun rack and left. Where's the phone bender? Yes, it's right,
- 14:03dollar. I did speak with Langley a few minutes ago. Nothing important.
- 14:09That's a routine business question about a shipment and rapper. You're sure that's all
- 14:13it was, Alistay, but of course, man, that's not a dollar.
- 14:16Simply keep getting you down to him. Did either of you say anything
- 14:18about missus Langley? Medea? Yess. She was mentioned casually, casually,
- 14:24and he didn't tell you that she's disappeared, possibly been murdered. You're being
- 14:28serious, dolla. Did he tell you anything about it? No, not
- 14:31a word. Matter of fact, I is here, the one who mentioned
- 14:35me the perfectly casual references. I told you. What did you say?
- 14:37Alisa? Lib I just finished having a drink with her at the Colosseum bar
- 14:58brand. Here's a suggestion that'll help you go through a busy day feeling more
- 15:03relaxed and satisfied. From time to time, especially when you're feeling tense or
- 15:07under pressure, chew a stick of Wrigley spearmint gum. You see, chewing
- 15:13is a natural way to get rid of some of that pent up tension.
- 15:16Chewing on a good smooth piece of Wrigley spearmint gum not only helps you feel
- 15:20more relaxed, but also give you taste enjoyment. There's lots of refreshing,
- 15:26delicious flavor in Wrigley Spearmint Chewing Gum. You'll really enjoy it. So do
- 15:31what millions do. Always keep Wrigley's Spearmint Chewing Gum handy and chew sum every
- 15:35day. You'll feel more relaxed and you'll get more enjoyment out of the things
- 15:41you do. Next time you're at the store, get a few packages of
- 15:45Wrigley's Spearmint Chewing gum. And now, with our star John Lund, we
- 15:56bring you the second act of yours, truly, Johnny Dollar. I managed
- 16:14to get back to Kuala Lumpur, and about half the time it had taken
- 16:17me to get to the plantation, George Alistair was still grumbling about the climate
- 16:22the country and being involved in the Langley affair. Oh a crown cinnd that
- 16:26I turned. Langley was disintgating, but I didn't think he'd ever take a
- 16:30gun and go hunting his wife to kill her as he tried to get in
- 16:33touch with you. No, but he knows you saw missus Langley at the
- 16:37coliseum bar right, Yes, yes, I totally net on the phone.
- 16:41Did she say anything about a raid at the plantation? About an attempt to
- 16:45kill her? There? Not a word claimed. She was in town on
- 16:48a true too shopping trip seemed cheerful and heavy. And she's staying at some
- 16:52hotel room twenty two at the Crown House. Small reasonable reach she was really
- 16:59stays? Now when she's in todd are you better call the police and brief
- 17:03him while I'm on the way over the sooner Langley's picked up the better,
- 17:07Yes, of course. Oh by the way, after you wouldn't happen to
- 17:12know who holds that fifty thousand pound note against Langley's plantation, would you?
- 17:17Why? Are yes? I owned the note? Why? Just curious?
- 17:29There wasn't any sign of the Koala police in the Crown House lobby, so
- 17:32I went right up to missus Langley's room on the second floor. Whatever preconceived
- 17:37ideas I might have had concerning what madea Langley would be like didn't even come
- 17:41close. So you're an insurance man, mister Dollar adopted of you. It's
- 17:45must have a hole in its head sending you all the way to Koala because
- 17:48of those crazy ideas of Harry. You don't think there's anything to him,
- 17:51Missus Langley, But nothing. Lad got himself into a ladder with that crummy
- 17:55plantation that's riding his back. Been working too hard, that's all. Do
- 17:59you think that's all of us to it? All our work? What else?
- 18:03Oh? He needs a good long vacation away from that stinking plantation.
- 18:07What went on out there this morning? You mean or you were at the
- 18:11plantation when the terrorists made that raid? Weren't you? Oh? That's sure
- 18:15getting so. I don't pay any attention to those things anymore. They're happening
- 18:17all the time. Where were you when it took place? My room packing
- 18:21for this trip to town? Why? Or both your husband and Conford have
- 18:25the idea that somebody stage that raid in order to kill you, kill me?
- 18:29They both said you disappeared right after it. Sure I did. I
- 18:32drove to town. Anybody see you leave? Then? I was at the
- 18:36gate. He let me out here. I knew I was coming here.
- 18:40Your husband knew that. Sure here, he's going to join me here.
- 18:44This place has got it kind of you might call it sentimental feeling for us.
- 18:48Oh yeah, how's that, missus Langley. I'm staying here when I
- 18:51first met Harry, not to show people stay here. Oh you were in
- 18:55the show business, couldn't you tell? Sure? I was traveling around the
- 18:59Orient with a girly show. Nothing big time, you understand, But it
- 19:02was a living funny other things turn out. Never figured i'd wind up some
- 19:07day and the wife of a rich plantation on. It must have been quite
- 19:11a change. No, I know what you're thinking. It's another chorus cutie
- 19:15on the make of managed to snag herself a gold mine. I didn't say
- 19:18that, well, don't. I happened to love that guy on mine.
- 19:22When he meets me here, I'm gonna make him take me to Singapore for
- 19:26a month, just the two of us, a real vacation, and I'll
- 19:30forget all this crazy. But it's about people wanting to kill him and me.
- 19:34I think it'll be okay. Then when we get back, we'll go
- 19:41what was it down do? Yeah, you didn't get started on that vacation
- 19:48soon enough. The shots have come from the rear of another hotel just across
- 19:56the alleyway from the Crown House. When I got over that, I found
- 20:00just about what I expected, a room filled with babbling tenants. The smell
- 20:04of prink cordype and an excited room. Click. Yes, yes, it
- 20:10was a gentleman who rented this room. He had registered here, not thirty
- 20:15minutes ago. I do not understand why he's not here now. I happen
- 20:18to remember his name. Oh yes, Tone, I take great pride in
- 20:22my work here. I remember the names of all the hotel guests. Oh,
- 20:26I'm only interested in one, the man who rented this room. Oh
- 20:30yes, I remember quite distinctly. He registered here under the name of Harrison
- 20:37Langley. I went back to Maida's room. They got her out of there.
- 20:44Another police protection, I could have saved myself the trip. She was
- 20:48gone. I spent the next three hours going round and round with a Koala
- 20:52police. Eventually they decided they'd try to pick up Langley and see what they
- 20:57could do about protecting Maida. Expensive gout at him three ten dollars for a
- 21:06double scotch on the rocks and a half eaten dish of Mamma at the coliseum
- 21:10bar. I don't think the bell would have run that high, But when
- 21:12I saw the face and the crowded bund outside the window, I didn't feel
- 21:17like waiting for change. Still looking for Langley. Right, Oh it's you,
- 21:26Donna, still looking for maiden? Then you and you and I came
- 21:30here to Kuwana to kut that's the general impression I've received. Yeah, it's
- 21:36a terrible thing, but a scheming woman can do to amend on terrible thing.
- 21:41Do you want to tell me about it first? Or do we go
- 21:42straight to the police? Doesn't really meant humbers it probably not. There's a
- 21:48little garden across the square I used to meet Mada there. Do you mind
- 21:56if we talk about it? Then sounds like it's going to place as any
- 22:11I don't know, Donna. Maybe maybe it's because I'm weakling. Maybe it's
- 22:17because when a man marries late in life, as I did, it hits
- 22:22him harder when he learns that his wife no longer loves him. He still
- 22:26think that's the real story. I noticed she and Crawford. That's not the
- 22:32way she tells it. Langley, I should have known him better. She
- 22:34dense, old tramp. She only married me for my money. And you're
- 22:40convinced Maida and Crawford and tended to murder you. Oh no, don't underestimate
- 22:45my sweet darling wife, Donna. She didn't want me killed, then Crawford
- 22:51could force her into marrying him. No, all she wanted was to have
- 22:56me a judgementally incompetent, and she'd have control of my money and no springs
- 23:02attached. That's why she was so brazen about her affair with Cowford. Why
- 23:07they tried to break me down, with all those fright against my life.
- 23:10Take those terrorists raids against the plantation, to make me crack, break down
- 23:15under the strain, commit some unreasoning active violence, h where they almost succeeded.
- 23:27I came here to corner to day to kill me down, to get
- 23:33rid of her once and for all. I couldn't see any other way out
- 23:37would answer for me. Murders never an answer for anything. Lately, I'm
- 23:42not sure. I spent the whole afternoon walking the streets thinking about it,
- 23:51trying to bring some semblance of sanity back into my life. I don't know,
- 23:56Donna. Maybe I should wouldn't have changed my mind. Maybe if i'd
- 24:03grown to that hotel and killed her. I don't know. You still have
- 24:11a gun with you? Yes, yeah, he thanks. The magazine's full
- 24:23gun doesn't look as though it's been fired, And why shout it? I
- 24:29told you why I changed my mind about killing her, didn't I? Yeah,
- 24:33so you did. I asked Langley to wait in the garden and went
- 24:42across to the Colisseum hotel, where I made three quick phone calls. The
- 24:47first was to the Koala police. They told me the slugs they dug out
- 24:51of the wall and made his hotel room or thirty eight caliber. The second
- 24:55call was to the Sundown Plantation. Yeah, his cart. One Langley's wife
- 25:02left the plantation earlier yesterday morning. Now why did you tell me she disappeared?
- 25:06It was at her requests, She said, to tell everyone that she
- 25:10was planning some surprise. But one Langley, Uh huh? What about Crawford?
- 25:15Is he around? Also? He left Ula Lampa shortly after you did.
- 25:18Did he say when he was coming back? Yes, he said he
- 25:22would return by midnight tonight. Uh huh. He had a gun with him,
- 25:26of course. Yes, you're not only to kid, but also to
- 25:30one Langley's thirty at Calaba Webley. The third call was to the room clerk
- 25:38of the hotel where the shots had been fired. His memory was still good
- 25:42Concerning a man who had registered as Harrison Langley six feet tall, brown hair,
- 25:48heavy set about thirty. It was a perfect description of Crawford. I
- 25:56drove back to the garden and my armored Ford picked up Langley and we headed
- 26:00out on the jungle Rower, leading back to the sundown Blush Year. I'd
- 26:03get the proof I needed when we got there, but I was wrong.
- 26:08I got him when we were still fifteen miles away. Must have been a
- 26:14landmine. It's something give a rent orig in his car. We'll find out
- 26:27there. It is Darling, Ama car ro Lear off the roof. Yeah,
- 26:52look, yeah, do here. Just here's me. Not a prayer
- 27:00for either one. The guns wearing it's my whibley. I know he used
- 27:07it, the Satterleon. It's like I was the target and I've made her
- 27:11sure she'd died out here like this instead, cheap chorus girl. All she
- 27:23wanted was money, so she married for it. But that wasn't it enough.
- 27:30She had to scheme and nive to break me down, destroy me so
- 27:37it could be all hers, a loom where she didn't succeed Donan and I'm
- 27:44we're rid of her. She deserved to die like this by violence, just
- 27:49another dead animal in the jungle. Her mister Langley, let sheep no good
- 27:55train. That's all she was. Believe me, I'm well rid of her,
- 28:00well rid of her. She just have to dials nothing but cheap cool
- 28:08taking expense account atom four thirty nine dollars and seventy cents hotel bill and incidentals
- 28:41and Kowala Lumpur expense accout ittem five one thou eighty three dollars and twenty five
- 28:47cents Airfare and incidentals from Kowala Lumpur back to Hotford expense account total two thousand,
- 28:53two hundred and ninety six dollars and forty five cents. Remarks, Sorry,
- 28:59I couldn't save you the loss on Maita Langley's death claim. But if
- 29:03it's any consolation, you're in good company. Everybody concerns seems to have lost
- 29:07something yours truly, Johnny Doller. Friends, when you've got a package of

- 31:22While the program almost ran counter to the stereotop about a younger women who marry
- 31:33older, richer men, but ended up kind of conforming to it in the
- 31:38end where the guy was paranoid turned out actually to be correct. But regardless
- 31:45of that, I have to say I love the setting of this episode as
- 31:51a phenomenal place where you're moving into a whole other world here, and I
- 32:00think that I think that, you know, it's one of the great things
- 32:05about Johnny Doller. You can go anywhere. I mean, half the time
- 32:08he could hang out around he could hang out out around Hartford, but then
- 32:15he goes halfway around the world to someplace, someplace is totally foreign to our
- 32:22way of life. So I love this episode and just the different setting it
- 32:27put Johnny Doller in. While we do have a listener comment this one,
- 32:37this one comes from Kathleen. I really enjoy listening to the old time radio
- 32:42shows. There remind me and when I was a child listening to the radio
