Transcript
- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Wednesday.
- 0:14It's the 23rd of April and I'm so glad to have your company on
- 0:19this auspicious occasion where we will both start and finish a
- 0:24book of the New Testament. That's right, today we will read
- 0:27the book of Philemon and it's entirety.
- 0:29Yeah, it is the shortest book. Well, that's not entirely true.
- 0:33There are others that are only 1 chapter, but it is a very short
- 0:36book. It is a very intimate portrayal
- 0:39of what a house church looks like.
- 0:41It gives us this window into the early churches, into the
- 0:45difference that it makes being a disciple of Jesus as Paul brings
- 0:49together this slave and this master, but also brothers in
- 0:54their faith in Jesus. And this is this beautiful story
- 0:58that speaks right to us today about what is the difference
- 1:01that our faith makes in our daily lives in a real, tangible
- 1:05way. Not just some theoretical idea,
- 1:08but nuts and bolts. How does it change my life?
- 1:12So this is as pithy as it gets. Short, sweet, deeply personal
- 1:17and deeply practical. Let's read it together, friends,
- 1:20as we read together the book of Philemon.
- 1:33This letter is from Paul, a prisoner for preaching the good
- 1:37news about Christ Jesus, and from our brother Timothy.
- 1:41I'm writing to Philemon, our beloved Co worker, and to our
- 1:45sister Aphia, and to our fellow soldier Arcopus, and to the
- 1:51church that meets in your house. May God our Father and the Lord
- 1:55Jesus Christ give you grace and peace.
- 2:00I always thank God when I pray for you, Philemon, because I
- 2:04keep hearing about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for
- 2:08all God's people, and I'm praying that you will put into
- 2:12action the generosity that comes from your faith as you
- 2:15understand and experience all the good things we have in
- 2:19Christ. Your love has given me much joy
- 2:22and comfort, my brother, for your kindness has often
- 2:26refreshed the hearts of God's people.
- 2:29That is why I am boldly asking a favour of you.
- 2:33I could demand it in the name of Christ because it is the right
- 2:36thing for you to do, but because of our love, I simply prefer to
- 2:41ask you. Consider this as a request from
- 2:45me, Paul, an old man and now also a prisoner, for the sake of
- 2:50Christ Jesus. I appeal to you to show kindness
- 2:55to my child Onessimus. I became his father in the faith
- 2:59while here in prison. Onessimus hasn't been of much
- 3:03use to you in the past, but now he is very useful to both of us.
- 3:09I am sending him back to you, and with him comes my own heart.
- 3:14I wanted to keep him here with me while I was in these chains
- 3:17for preaching the good news, and he would have helped me on your
- 3:21behalf, but I didn't want to do anything without your consent.
- 3:25I wanted you to help because you were willing, not because you
- 3:28were forced. It seems you lost an Nisamus for
- 3:32a little while so that you can have him back forever.
- 3:36He is no longer like a slave to you.
- 3:39He is more than a slave, for he is a beloved brother, especially
- 3:44to me. Now he will mean much more to
- 3:47you, both as a man and as a brother in the Lord.
- 3:52So if you consider me your partner, welcome him as you
- 3:56would welcome me. If he has wronged you in any way
- 4:00or owes you anything, charge it to me.
- 4:04I, Paul, write this with my own hand.
- 4:08I will repay it and I won't mention that you owe me your
- 4:12very soul. Yes, my brother, please do me
- 4:16this favour for the Lord's sake. Give me this encouragement in
- 4:20Christ. I'm confident as I write this
- 4:23letter that you will do what I ask.
- 4:25And even more, one more thing, please prepare a guest room for
- 4:30me, for I am hoping that God will answer your prayers and let
- 4:34me return to you soon. Epiphras, my fellow prisoner in
- 4:39Christ Jesus sends you his greetings, so do Mark,
- 4:43Aristarchus, Demos and Luke, my Co workers.
- 4:48May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your Spirit.
- 5:03Our Lord. Thank you for this generous
- 5:05reminder from Paul that as we live these lives of faith,
- 5:11suddenly things do change. The structures that the world
- 5:16would tell us are so important and the hierarchies that we're
- 5:19able to peg ourselves into and look down, and all those below
- 5:23us, well, they just don't make sense.
- 5:25In your Kingdom, Lord, where we all stand before you, our Father
- 5:30and our brother, as brothers and sisters, equally forgiven,
- 5:35equally loved, equally valued by you, our wonderful, merciful
- 5:40God. And in the light of that truth,
- 5:43how can we be anything other than forgiving and inclusive of
- 5:47those around us? So Lord, make your Kingdom
- 5:51reality seep deep into our hearts so that it becomes a lens
- 5:56through which we see each other as equal, loved children of the
- 6:02living God. So we come before you now,
- 6:06Jesus, and we pray this in your mighty, mighty name.
- 6:11I'm in.
