- 1:57Speaker 8: host Hollis Lewis, Hello, Lisa Odie, Hello, and ladies and gentlemen.
- 2:03Speaker 2: Today.
- 2:04Speaker 8: I have to say that I am like super happy
- 2:08Speaker 8: and actually kind of star struck a little bit because
- 2:11Speaker 8: I have I have. I have a great quarterback that
- 2:19Speaker 8: I'm holding on to the name. I know some folks
- 2:21Speaker 8: may already know, because I know that Hollis couldn't hold
- 2:24Speaker 8: it all right, So we have Dante called Pepper on
- 2:31Speaker 8: our show today.
- 2:32Speaker 2: Hey, man, how you doing.
- 2:34Speaker 9: What's up? Car?
- 2:37Speaker 2: I'm I'm great.
- 2:38Speaker 8: And in case you didn't know, like I said, I
- 2:40Speaker 8: have Hollis Lewis, what's up?
- 2:42Speaker 9: Bro?
- 2:42Speaker 2: And Lisa Odi?
- 2:44Speaker 10: Hey, Dante, Hello, Hello, Hello.
- 2:48Speaker 8: So you know I have I have this introduction for you,
- 2:52Speaker 8: but I'm gonna I'm gonna kind of wait on it
- 2:54Speaker 8: because here's one of the questions that I have been
- 2:59Speaker 8: or let me say, how you have impressed me? Okay,
- 3:02Speaker 8: and I'm not trying to make you uncomfortable, but I
- 3:07Speaker 8: know you know, everybody knows athletes and for the most part,
- 3:12Speaker 8: high profile, which I consider you as being a high
- 3:15Speaker 8: profile athlete. In most cases, they can be funny, you
- 3:21Speaker 8: know what I'm saying, Like they don't want to necessarily
- 3:24Speaker 8: always chat with anybody. And man, when we were together
- 3:30Speaker 8: this past trip that we had up there with with
- 3:33Speaker 8: Buddy Becker, br I watched you. You know, you you
- 3:39Speaker 8: signed anything and everything that somebody brought to you, and
- 3:44Speaker 8: you were cordial.
- 3:45Speaker 2: You were cordial to the other players.
- 3:48Speaker 8: And I just want to give you, like huge, huge
- 3:52Speaker 8: props because I know a ton of players who are
- 3:54Speaker 8: just not that way, and they don't even maybe have
- 3:57Speaker 8: what you had.
- 4:00Speaker 9: Man, I appreciate your car, man, but you gotta look
- 4:02Speaker 9: at it like this. I'm I'm from o Calli, Florida, Man,
- 4:05Speaker 9: a small country town here in Florida, and I remember
- 4:08Speaker 9: growing up and we didn't have a whole lot of
- 4:11Speaker 9: pro athletes and celebrities around. So I mean, I look
- 4:16Speaker 9: at mysels like anybody else. First of all, you know,
- 4:19Speaker 9: I don't look at I'm busitan anybody anybody. And so,
- 4:23Speaker 9: you know, I guess it goes back to how I
- 4:25Speaker 9: was brought up and and how I was always taught
- 4:28Speaker 9: to treat people how I want to be treated, you know.
- 4:31Speaker 9: So that's kind of what it is. But I appreciate you, bro.
- 4:34Speaker 8: Well, yeah, I just I just had to get that out. Hollis,
- 4:37Speaker 8: And let me just give you a little background on Hollis.
- 4:39Speaker 8: Hollis is one of the leaders in black quarterbacks here
- 4:45Speaker 8: in West Virginia. It took us, it took us a
- 4:48Speaker 8: while to kind of get black quarterbacks here, but Hollis
- 4:52Speaker 8: Hollis was one of those. I coached him at West
- 4:56Speaker 8: Virginia State and he and he played at uh.
- 4:59Speaker 2: G W, which was which was not.
- 5:01Speaker 8: There was not a lot of black folks there, but
- 5:03Speaker 8: he had the opportunity to be one of our first
- 5:08Speaker 8: black quarterbacks. So I'm sure he's got a lot of
- 5:11Speaker 8: questions for you in regards to that.
- 5:14Speaker 9: But U, man, it was my pleasure to much respect,
- 5:20Speaker 9: much respect man.
- 5:22Speaker 8: You know, I always had fun watching you at UH
- 5:24Speaker 8: at UH for the Minnesota Vikings because you know, at
- 5:27Speaker 8: that time we was all about Randy Moss. We was
- 5:29Speaker 8: watching every single game, so and by proxy watching you.
- 5:32Speaker 8: But the question I had, I want to go back
- 5:35Speaker 8: because you know, I actually lived in Central Florida for
- 5:37Speaker 8: a while so familiar with the areas. So you going
- 5:40Speaker 8: to UCF during that time, it wasn't a nationally recognized program.
- 5:46Speaker 8: You had opportunities, but similar to Randy Mars, you ended
- 5:49Speaker 8: up and maybe a lower division than your talented warranted.
- 5:53Speaker 8: So you were able to lift that program up. In
- 5:56Speaker 8: today's college football landscape, do you think that's possible? Do
- 6:00Speaker 8: you think guys would sort of take that route? And
- 6:02Speaker 8: just like I said, you were a four year starter
- 6:04Speaker 8: or excuse me, played four years at UCF and really
- 6:07Speaker 8: was I would say responsible for lifting that program up
- 6:10Speaker 8: to national prominence.
- 6:12Speaker 9: Hey, man, I appreciate that. But but I tell you, man,
- 6:14Speaker 9: I have some real dogs on my team with me, Man,
- 6:16Speaker 9: some showing up dogs that worked just as hard as me,
- 6:20Speaker 9: and some of them probably harder than me.
- 6:21Speaker 8: Man.
- 6:21Speaker 9: So I I, you know, the quarterback get a lot
- 6:24Speaker 9: of credit for when we have some sense. But also
- 6:26Speaker 9: know you get blamed well you don't have some I know,
- 6:29Speaker 9: I know how that goes. You know that too, But man, yeah, man,
- 6:33Speaker 9: UCF was you know, the story of how I got
- 6:36Speaker 9: there was h I was highly recruited coming out of
- 6:41Speaker 9: going into my senior year of high school. And once
- 6:45Speaker 9: my transcripts got out, pretty much my phone went from
- 6:49Speaker 9: ringing off the hook every day to not ringing at all.
- 6:53Speaker 9: And and so it was because I wouldn't taking care
- 6:56Speaker 9: of my business in the classroom. I was a little immature,
- 6:59Speaker 9: and you know, it was a wake up call for me.
- 7:03Speaker 9: So during that time when nothing my phone wasn't ringing,
- 7:08Speaker 9: it was one school that kept in contact with me,
- 7:11Speaker 9: and that was Coase Paul Linsbery at UCM. He was
- 7:14Speaker 9: offer the linement coach and he recruited to since the
- 7:16Speaker 9: Florida area. So he what he did was he looked
- 7:19Speaker 9: at my transcripts and he came and took me out
- 7:22Speaker 9: of class one day and he and he, you know,
- 7:24Speaker 9: he didn't know me very well, but he said, Dante,
- 7:25Speaker 9: I looked at the transcripts, and then there's a possibility
- 7:30Speaker 9: if you do these things right here, you can be
- 7:32Speaker 9: elg by the end of your senior year and those
- 7:35Speaker 9: things and tell me to I had to go back
- 7:38Speaker 9: and take over some of my freshman classes and get
- 7:42Speaker 9: aids at them. And I did that. And you know,
- 7:44Speaker 9: he did this a lot knowing I was, you know,
- 7:46Speaker 9: one type again eligible. He didn't know I was. I
- 7:48Speaker 9: could have signed with anybody still. But because he did that,
- 7:53Speaker 9: and and at the time, like I said, it was
- 7:57Speaker 9: kind of like I was at a low point. I
- 7:58Speaker 9: was like, dang, you know, I didn't know, you know,
- 8:00Speaker 9: I could have played baseball or whatever. I really, I
- 8:02Speaker 9: really wanted to be the first one about saying to
- 8:04Speaker 9: go to college. And so I h once I got
- 8:09Speaker 9: once I became eligible, I you know, see spurry your
- 8:13Speaker 9: little hopes by me bout all these you know, top coaches.
- 8:17Speaker 9: At the time, it was like a light switch picked
- 8:20Speaker 9: back on and they were calling me again, like it
- 8:22Speaker 9: like it never happened. For that whole summer, nobody would
- 8:25Speaker 9: come it. So I say, you know what, I'm gonna
- 8:28Speaker 9: go to U see up because I know these these
- 8:31Speaker 9: people care about me more than just me playing football
- 8:36Speaker 9: for them, and I would be a good hand. So
- 8:39Speaker 9: that's why I ended up at you.
- 8:40Speaker 2: That's that's amazing.
- 8:41Speaker 8: So and I think that's part of the story that
- 8:44Speaker 8: maybe gets missing, that you actually got eligible and you
- 8:47Speaker 8: could have just to what you just said, you could
- 8:49Speaker 8: have win anywhere else, but you chose to go to UCF.
- 8:52Speaker 8: So it wasn't like you had to go. You chose
- 8:54Speaker 8: there after you know, they showed you the concern and
- 8:56Speaker 8: love for you.
- 8:58Speaker 9: Yeah, and these coaches didn't really they would motivate me
- 9:01Speaker 9: because they told me. I ain't gonna say with coach,
- 9:04Speaker 9: but a few of them told me stuff like, you know,
- 9:07Speaker 9: why do you want to go play in front of
- 9:08Speaker 9: five thousand people when you could play in front of
- 9:10Speaker 9: eighty five thousand every week on national TV and stuff
- 9:13Speaker 9: like that. They didn't realize they was just motivate me
- 9:15Speaker 9: to work harder and improve them. Wrong.
- 9:19Speaker 11: Oh hey, Dante, thanks so much for coming on the
- 9:22Speaker 11: podcast this evening with us. I was pumped all day
- 9:25Speaker 11: for this conversation, so I'm pretty excited to be speaking
- 9:28Speaker 11: with you right now. I just want to fast forward
- 9:32Speaker 11: to the year two thousand and four in your NFL career.
- 9:36Speaker 11: That was your most successful season in the league. I
- 9:38Speaker 11: believe you set the single season record for most total
- 9:43Speaker 11: yardage produced by an NFL quarterback. And also I'm sure
- 9:47Speaker 11: Carl remembers this, Vikings reached the playoffs for the second time.
- 9:51Speaker 10: Under your watch.
- 9:52Speaker 11: Looking back on that year, what are your thoughts and
- 9:55Speaker 11: it's impact on your career for future reference?
- 9:59Speaker 10: What was what? What did that do? Was that a
- 10:00Speaker 10: turning point in your career in the NFL?
- 10:05Speaker 9: I wasn't say a turning point. I mean we we
- 10:07Speaker 9: had a lot of success on offense, and I like
- 10:10Speaker 9: to say, I uh, it was my third year with
- 10:15Speaker 9: coach Scott Lenahan, who was my officeve coordinator, and he
- 10:19Speaker 9: and I were on the same page. I'm telling you,
- 10:21Speaker 9: it was like I knew what he was thinking every
- 10:23Speaker 9: time he would call a play. I knew why he
- 10:26Speaker 9: was calling it, and I knew what to look for,
- 10:29Speaker 9: and I you know, I became a master of that offense.
- 10:32Speaker 9: And and I think that attributed to a lot of succession. Obviously,
- 10:37Speaker 9: I had, you know, players like Randy Marson, Nate Burton
- 10:40Speaker 9: and Marcus Robinson and Kelly Campbell and also Mo Williams,
- 10:44Speaker 9: Michael Benett, Ontario Smith will do more guys that were great,
- 10:48Speaker 9: great football players around me. And I had great office
- 10:50Speaker 9: in linement as well, Matt Burke and the crew. So man,
- 10:53Speaker 9: it was it was. It was an amazing season offensively
- 10:57Speaker 9: for us, and and I think we were just cooking
- 10:59Speaker 9: and all still of the is because, like I said,
- 11:01Speaker 9: the office coordinator myself, it was our third year together
- 11:04Speaker 9: and I had never been with office office coordinator more
- 11:06Speaker 9: than a year at time, so you know, it was
- 11:09Speaker 9: it was. It was a combination of those things, but
- 11:11Speaker 9: it was a great It was a great year. We
- 11:13Speaker 9: put up a lot of points and you know, we
- 11:15Speaker 9: we made it difficult for defenses to stop us. But yeah,
- 11:20Speaker 9: it was great, and you know, it's just unfortunately, you know,
- 11:23Speaker 9: the next year, I got hurt. But yeah, and Lanta
- 11:27Speaker 9: had left, you know, because Atlanta had left you know
- 11:29Speaker 9: that that season and went to take a job in
- 11:31Speaker 9: Saint Louis as well. So it combinations of things, but
- 11:35Speaker 9: it was it was a good year, and I'm I
- 11:37Speaker 9: was happy to be able to put forth the numbers
- 11:40Speaker 9: and had success.
- 11:41Speaker 8: We had Sure, Dante, it when I look at your
- 11:47Speaker 8: your height and weight, it says six four to sixty. Yeah,
- 11:53Speaker 8: I have to I'm gonna have to assume at some
- 11:55Speaker 8: point somebody was trying to tell you to play something else.
- 11:59Speaker 9: Yeah, well, hey, to be honest with you. Thenny Green,
- 12:02Speaker 9: my first day in Minnesota, my very first day there,
- 12:07Speaker 9: they got me scared. I was I was about sixty four.
- 12:10Speaker 9: I was two sixty six my very first day. And
- 12:15Speaker 9: Denny Green, he said, Lady said, Dante, I'm gonna tell
- 12:18Speaker 9: you right now, I'm not concerned with and wait. I
- 12:22Speaker 9: know you're gonna take your business and be prepared. I
- 12:24Speaker 9: just want to make sure that you physically and be
- 12:28Speaker 9: in the best shape that you possibly can be in.
- 12:30Speaker 9: He said, it's not gonna be a problem. I said, no, sir,
- 12:32Speaker 9: I don't have a problem. And he never bothered me
- 12:35Speaker 9: and buy my weight that I never but he did
- 12:38Speaker 9: tell me if he said, I just want you a
- 12:39Speaker 9: hundred two seventy five. So really that was my they
- 12:42Speaker 9: want him so sometimes the way I was wearing two,
- 12:44Speaker 9: even though four, I was like two seventy. But I
- 12:46Speaker 9: was my body fan was low. I was just a big,
- 12:50Speaker 9: big physical fans through that. I worked hard and all season,
- 12:57Speaker 9: so I was preparing my body for the season and
- 13:00Speaker 9: trying to prevent injuries and stuff like that. But I
- 13:03Speaker 9: never you know, even I was a bigger guy people.
- 13:06Speaker 9: I had a high school coach that didn't try to
- 13:09Speaker 9: move me. They let me pay quarterback. And in high school,
- 13:13Speaker 9: you know, my senior year, I was I was, I
- 13:15Speaker 9: was thinking I was about two forty five, two fifty,
- 13:18Speaker 9: you know. Yeah, so I was always a big kid.
- 13:22Speaker 9: In college, you know, coach Mike cruz ach h he
- 13:26Speaker 9: was my office coordinator and then became the head coach,
- 13:29Speaker 9: and he never bothered me about obviously changer. So it
- 13:32Speaker 9: was I was lucky that I had coaches that didn't
- 13:35Speaker 9: try to change my position. I was very lucky that
- 13:38Speaker 9: I had good coaches as well.
- 13:40Speaker 8: And I'd say too that your quarterback skills had to
- 13:44Speaker 8: have been visible to them for them to even not
- 13:49Speaker 8: not to bother you and or let you just go,
- 13:52Speaker 8: because in most cases there's no way that that no
- 13:57Speaker 8: one's going to be in that position unless they've got
- 14:00Speaker 8: some skill set that coaches can actually literally.
- 14:04Speaker 9: Sit yes, But I will say that a couple of
- 14:07Speaker 9: couple of colleges, and I'm gonna just say at the
- 14:10Speaker 9: University of Florida was one of them, and there's a
- 14:12Speaker 9: couple other ones like ron Zuk was the office with
- 14:15Speaker 9: the defense coordinator at the time at Florida my senior year,
- 14:19Speaker 9: and his very first question to me, he was like, hey,
- 14:22Speaker 9: you ever't played defense? I was like, I was looking
- 14:29Speaker 9: at him sideways. ID.
- 14:35Speaker 8: So, So when you get to Minnesota and obviously, and
- 14:38Speaker 8: I believe Randy Moss was already there, how exciting? How
- 14:42Speaker 8: excited were you to be able to have a receiver
- 14:46Speaker 8: of that caliber where because you had a big you
- 14:48Speaker 8: had a big arm, and you can just really just
- 14:51Speaker 8: let it go with a guy like Randy Moss.
- 14:54Speaker 9: Yeah, I mean I was excited. Denny. Denny told me
- 14:57Speaker 9: what they they called me. I was at the draft
- 14:59Speaker 9: and about to be honest with you, I had no
- 15:01Speaker 9: idea I was going to go to Minnesota because you know,
- 15:04Speaker 9: I didn't talk to Minnesota one time. From the time
- 15:08Speaker 9: my last came out senior year in college until the draft,
- 15:11Speaker 9: I didn't even speak to Minnesota one not a scout
- 15:14Speaker 9: not a call, and I'm gonna tell you interesting story. Man. Uh,
- 15:18Speaker 9: Danny Green called me and I was in the in
- 15:21Speaker 9: the green room at the draft. He called me, and
- 15:22Speaker 9: of course it was, hey, do you want to be
- 15:24Speaker 9: in Minnesota, Miking? And I'm like, of course I want
- 15:26Speaker 9: to be What I'm gonna say, no, Yeah, I didn't care.
- 15:32Speaker 9: You know, I knew that Rand the grun An was there,
- 15:34Speaker 9: Jeff George, but I didn't care because I wanted to
- 15:37Speaker 9: you know, life gonna dream of getting drafted and playing
- 15:39Speaker 9: in the NFL. So, you know, he drafted. But he
- 15:42Speaker 9: when I got to Minnesota, he told me the story
- 15:45Speaker 9: of how he even heard about me when Denny was
- 15:48Speaker 9: you know, he he came up under Bill Walsh and
- 15:51Speaker 9: he said about two years before that, when I was
- 15:54Speaker 9: going to my junior year, he said, uh, Bill wall
- 15:58Speaker 9: gave him a call and told him he needed to
- 16:01Speaker 9: check out this kid in Florida by his name of
- 16:03Speaker 9: Donthe Coben.
- 16:03Speaker 7: Wow.
- 16:05Speaker 9: Yeah, So he told me he had led me since
- 16:08Speaker 9: then and then they traded up. I don't know if
- 16:10Speaker 9: y'all remembered it, but they traded because they had like
- 16:12Speaker 9: the twenty pigre late in the first round, but they
- 16:15Speaker 9: traded up to the eleventh fig because Tampa, who I
- 16:18Speaker 9: thought I was going to go through coach Guntry. I
- 16:20Speaker 9: met with him about five times before the draft, and
- 16:23Speaker 9: I thought it was a lot that I was going
- 16:24Speaker 9: to go to Tampa. And Coach Green moved up as
- 16:28Speaker 9: surprised everybody, and drafted me. And he didn't want me
- 16:31Speaker 9: to go to Tampa because at the time we were
- 16:33Speaker 9: in the same visitor. Now this is Danny Green telling
- 16:38Speaker 9: me all this, you know, and I'm like, all right, coach,
- 16:40Speaker 9: So he pulls me in there. He takes you to
- 16:42Speaker 9: the draft board and he told me all the players
- 16:44Speaker 9: that they had rated. And not only did he have
- 16:47Speaker 9: me the number one quarterback in the draft that year,
- 16:50Speaker 9: he had me raised the number one player in the draft.
- 16:52Speaker 9: So he was like, he was really high on me,
- 16:54Speaker 9: and he said he needed a quarterback they can get
- 16:56Speaker 9: the ball out there to Randy and he thought that
- 16:59Speaker 9: I fit the mold for So that's how I even
- 17:02Speaker 9: got to Minnesota. And Coach Green will always be one
- 17:05Speaker 9: of my guys, and I appreciate him drafting me.
- 17:08Speaker 8: Yeah that and not only and I failed to mention
- 17:10Speaker 8: not only Randy Moss was there, but Chris Carter was
- 17:12Speaker 8: there too, so you had sort of that duality of
- 17:15Speaker 8: those great receivers with two different skill sets and two
- 17:17Speaker 8: different sets of experience. So that always helps out as
- 17:20Speaker 8: a quarterback.
- 17:22Speaker 9: Oh man, it was big for me. Man it having
- 17:24Speaker 9: two guys like that on the outside that that are
- 17:27Speaker 9: going to make plays when they afford the opportunity to
- 17:29Speaker 9: make the play. That's really what it's all about. And
- 17:32Speaker 9: I just had to put the ball with it need
- 17:33Speaker 9: to beat man and it. You know, sometimes it looks easy,
- 17:36Speaker 9: but you know, we but we prepared very very well
- 17:39Speaker 9: and and uh, you know we were able to put
- 17:41Speaker 9: up some good numbers. Yeah.
- 17:43Speaker 11: So so Dante, I have a question, and Hollis just
- 17:45Speaker 11: kind of touched on this. Having receivers like Chris Carter
- 17:47Speaker 11: and Randy Moss in your you know, in your field
- 17:49Speaker 11: to throw to. What was it like trying to because
- 17:53Speaker 11: you know, people view the quarterback as the leader of
- 17:55Speaker 11: the team and you know, being in kind of in
- 17:58Speaker 11: charge of the offense, what was your approach to leadership
- 18:02Speaker 11: involving Chris and Randy, Like, what kind of a relationship
- 18:06Speaker 11: did you have with those guys out on the field.
- 18:09Speaker 10: Was it kind of a.
- 18:10Speaker 11: Mutual thing or did you feel comfortable enough to tell
- 18:13Speaker 11: them this is what we're going to do or was
- 18:14Speaker 11: it mutual?
- 18:15Speaker 9: Yeah, I would tell you. My rookie year, I kind
- 18:21Speaker 9: of was like a sponge around there because I didn't
- 18:23Speaker 9: play my rookie year, so I got to watch Jeff
- 18:27Speaker 9: George around the Cunningham and watch how they prepare, and
- 18:30Speaker 9: I didn't I you know, obviously they had a job
- 18:33Speaker 9: to do as well, so I wasn't you know, I
- 18:35Speaker 9: didn't want to be this kids just bothering them and
- 18:38Speaker 9: picking their brain all the time. So I was kind
- 18:39Speaker 9: of like a sponge just you know, even the meeting rooms,
- 18:42Speaker 9: of course they would ask and just how they prepared themselves.
- 18:45Speaker 9: And I learned a lot from those guys. But dealing
- 18:47Speaker 9: with Randy and Chris that the season that coach after
- 18:51Speaker 9: my rookie year, Coach Green calls me, I think in
- 18:54Speaker 9: like March and tells me, hey, I'm going to announce
- 18:56Speaker 9: that you're going to be outside quarterback. And I was like,
- 18:58Speaker 9: all right, Coach, I'm ready. I felt like I was
- 19:01Speaker 9: ready my rookie year. After after probably about two weeks
- 19:03Speaker 9: of training camp, I thought I could have started. I
- 19:06Speaker 9: thought I had a girl. I felt like that, but
- 19:08Speaker 9: I had to wait. So so every every week during
- 19:12Speaker 9: my rookie year, I was the scout team quarterback, and
- 19:14Speaker 9: I treated practice like it was my game every day.
- 19:18Speaker 9: And I'm gonna who really got me ready? John Randall Man,
- 19:21Speaker 9: That dude, hey were he was painting faith in practice,
- 19:26Speaker 9: you know what I'm saying. So practice for me was
- 19:28Speaker 9: intense my rookie year. So Randy and Chris got to
- 19:33Speaker 9: see my skills set every day going against our first defense.
- 19:37Speaker 9: So I think I kind of won those guys over
- 19:40Speaker 9: a little bit. But then that off season when I
- 19:42Speaker 9: was name a starter, I came down to Chris's UH
- 19:45Speaker 9: training facility down in Voca Raton, Florida, and I lived
- 19:48Speaker 9: down there and trained with them every day. So they
- 19:50Speaker 9: got to see how hard I worked. You know, I wasn't.
- 19:53Speaker 9: I didn't. I came in. I didn't. I'm the type
- 19:55Speaker 9: of guy I didn't want nobody to give me nothing.
- 19:57Speaker 9: I want to earn it. So I earned never respect
- 20:01Speaker 9: and that it was a natural thing. And then and
- 20:03Speaker 9: once we got back up there the training camp, you know,
- 20:06Speaker 9: it was just I just stepped in and and and
- 20:08Speaker 9: they were just they were just receivers on the team.
- 20:10Speaker 9: To me, you know, at the times, like I had
- 20:12Speaker 9: a job to do, and they know, they know, everything
- 20:15Speaker 9: came to the quarterback, and you know, we we'd have
- 20:18Speaker 9: our you know, a little spats here and there, but
- 20:20Speaker 9: they know I would, you know, if I had Yeah,
- 20:26Speaker 9: if we had to come, we had to come to blows.
- 20:29Speaker 9: I was willing, you know what I'm saying. So we
- 20:33Speaker 9: we Luckily we never had to do that. But they
- 20:35Speaker 9: understood and they looked in my eyes and they knew
- 20:38Speaker 9: what I was made of. So I never had any
- 20:40Speaker 9: real problems with any one of those guys.
- 20:42Speaker 8: What's interesting to me is like I had I had
- 20:47Speaker 8: a year with Chris, and.
- 20:52Speaker 2: Chris is a different breed. He he like like like
- 20:56Speaker 2: for me, like we would go if going one on
- 21:00Speaker 2: one and all that kind of stuff. Like he was.
- 21:03Speaker 2: He was the kind of guy that.
- 21:04Speaker 8: Could really get to you, get get you, like, get
- 21:07Speaker 8: you upset, get you to the point where like you're like.
- 21:10Speaker 2: Well, bro, let's just let's just throw blows.
- 21:14Speaker 8: And so I'm wondering, how did you And again kind
- 21:19Speaker 8: OF's the same somewhat of the same question. But Chris
- 21:22Speaker 8: to me was a different guy. Like, what, like, how
- 21:25Speaker 8: did you manage to pull him in to it being okay?
- 21:30Speaker 8: Like when you didn't throw to him, you know, because
- 21:33Speaker 8: I know he wanted every ball.
- 21:37Speaker 9: Hey, can y'all hear me? Yeah we can hear Okay,
- 21:40Speaker 9: I'm on the turn fight. That was breaking up a
- 21:42Speaker 9: little bit. But yeah, Chris Man. Let me tell you,
- 21:44Speaker 9: I love Chris Man. But Chris, you know, he had
- 21:47Speaker 9: a lot of success, and you know, he he's the
- 21:50Speaker 9: type of guy that you just gotta be stirring with him. Man. Yeah,
- 21:55Speaker 9: that's what I did. And you know, in my rookie year,
- 22:00Speaker 9: he got to realize that the Vikings. I was brought
- 22:02Speaker 9: into a situation where the team was fifteen and one
- 22:05Speaker 9: the year before in the offenses, and so a lot
- 22:09Speaker 9: of people was like, why we draft a quarterback? We
- 22:12Speaker 9: need somebody, we need to help on defense. You know.
- 22:14Speaker 9: So I felt like, I really Chris was one of
- 22:17Speaker 9: the guys I really had to show, all right, why
- 22:22Speaker 9: I'm here and through it all. You know, I'm happy
- 22:28Speaker 9: that we were able to give them the same pace.
- 22:30Speaker 9: But at first, you know, Chris wasn't He wasn't somebody
- 22:33Speaker 9: that I really liked particularly, and I know he really
- 22:37Speaker 9: he felt like it was the end of his career
- 22:40Speaker 9: and he didn't have time to groom a guy. So
- 22:43Speaker 9: I knew I had to be ready, you know what
- 22:44Speaker 9: I'm saying. But one thing for sure, it was going
- 22:49Speaker 9: to be respectful, you feel me. So Chris knew. He
- 22:52Speaker 9: knew the type of dude I was from working out
- 22:55Speaker 9: with me, and a few times we in the heat
- 22:58Speaker 9: of battle, you know, I have to remind him like, man,
- 23:02Speaker 9: let's let's be respectful or now we can go we
- 23:07Speaker 9: can go there if you want to. And he never
- 23:09Speaker 9: really wanted to go there. So so that's how That's
- 23:12Speaker 9: how it was, man. So he ended up being good.
- 23:14Speaker 9: So we ended up being good.
- 23:15Speaker 8: Yeah, And I think I think in most cases you
- 23:17Speaker 8: always do kind of patch it up, but it is,
- 23:20Speaker 8: it is super tense, and I don't know if people
- 23:22Speaker 8: really realize whether it's quarter quarterback, receiver, offensive or defensive
- 23:29Speaker 8: line secondary. Like you chatting, you know, there's guys that
- 23:33Speaker 8: are chatting saying stuff like, hey, you guys got to
- 23:35Speaker 8: get a sight. You know, we were back here trying
- 23:37Speaker 8: to you know, and then some all of a sudden,
- 23:39Speaker 8: one I'm gonna turn around and say something to you,
- 23:41Speaker 8: and you kind of gotta be try to be like
- 23:43Speaker 8: you bold. But but I know when I was there,
- 23:47Speaker 8: there was nothing I could do with any of those
- 23:48Speaker 8: none of those d linemen. But Johnny Randall is a
- 23:51Speaker 8: special dude. He was a He was a special player.
- 23:54Speaker 9: You know, we went at it.
- 23:56Speaker 8: Man.
- 23:56Speaker 9: He his intensity every day. Yeah, got me, got my
- 24:00Speaker 9: feet right, got me really at the speed of the game.
- 24:04Speaker 9: I had to adjust a little bit from college and
- 24:07Speaker 9: being there every day going against him definitely helped me
- 24:10Speaker 9: and I and I appreciated him for that, you know,
- 24:12Speaker 9: because he was he was a He was a high
- 24:14Speaker 9: level competitor, and I was the same way, and I
- 24:17Speaker 9: wanted to win no matter how how it happened. Throwing
- 24:20Speaker 9: the run of it didn't matter.
- 24:22Speaker 2: Yeah, that's what's up.
- 24:23Speaker 8: So you know, I'm gonna go I know we jumping
- 24:25Speaker 8: all over the place here, but I'm gonna go a
- 24:27Speaker 8: little off script. And now you you were synonymous with
- 24:31Speaker 8: with your famous celebration.
- 24:34Speaker 2: To get your role on celebration, you was not.
- 24:37Speaker 8: Only did you you sort of popularized it outside of
- 24:40Speaker 8: the hip hop community, but you were also in one
- 24:42Speaker 8: of at the time, one of my favorite groups videos,
- 24:45Speaker 8: the Big Timer. So you know, you know, being a
- 24:48Speaker 8: kid from central Florida and kind of going through everything
- 24:51Speaker 8: you went to and just having that level of a
- 24:54Speaker 8: fun and celebrity.
- 24:56Speaker 2: How was that experience for you?
- 24:58Speaker 9: It was great. Man. Know Slim, Slim Williams and Baby Williams.
- 25:03Speaker 9: You know I met I met Slim. They're the owners
- 25:07Speaker 9: of Owners of Cash Money Records. And I met Slim
- 25:10Speaker 9: when they first were coming on the scene because one
- 25:13Speaker 9: of one of my wife's cousins played for the Saints
- 25:17Speaker 9: and his his girlfriend at the time was a girl
- 25:20Speaker 9: from New Orleans. So they when they broke up her
- 25:24Speaker 9: that that girl became she was friends with Slim, and
- 25:30Speaker 9: some kind of way he found out that, uh that
- 25:34Speaker 9: I was friends with well my girlfriend and her with friends.
- 25:37Speaker 9: So he invited me to that one of their first
- 25:39Speaker 9: shows when it came to Florida. So I ended up
- 25:42Speaker 9: going to the show in Miami and we hit off
- 25:44Speaker 9: and we became good friends. And you know, they had
- 25:47Speaker 9: a song and it because gets the roll on. So
- 25:49Speaker 9: one day I was leaving and he calls me. He's like, hey,
- 25:53Speaker 9: Pep man, when you call touchdown, may see you get
- 25:56Speaker 9: the rollover. That's and that's how I have it. Man,
- 26:01Speaker 9: and I just I did after every touchdown. It was
- 26:03Speaker 9: my celebration. Man. It was fun though. But those du
- 26:06Speaker 9: you know, awesome. Man. I had a great time, you know,
- 26:08Speaker 9: hanging out with them.
- 26:09Speaker 2: That's what Hey.
- 26:11Speaker 11: So Dante's speaking of youth and reliving your days back
- 26:14Speaker 11: when you were rookie quarterback. Thinking about the current NFL
- 26:19Speaker 11: with with so many young quarterbacks starting. You've got, you know,
- 26:22Speaker 11: names like c. J. Stroud, Bryce Young, Jayden Daniels. What
- 26:26Speaker 11: are your thoughts on the current crop of young quarterbacks
- 26:29Speaker 11: in the league. How do you how do you feel
- 26:31Speaker 11: about their play?
- 26:33Speaker 9: I love it. I love it. You know, it's a
- 26:35Speaker 9: different it's a different game, obviously, it's a more it's
- 26:38Speaker 9: an offensive game, and it's great. It's very exciting. I love,
- 26:44Speaker 9: you know, the run pass option that they do, the
- 26:46Speaker 9: R pos. I love that, you know, kind of wish
- 26:49Speaker 9: we'd had a little bit of that when I was playing. Yes,
- 26:52Speaker 9: you know, and I think, you know the quarterback you know,
- 26:58Speaker 9: coming up when I was young. You you're getting labeled
- 27:01Speaker 9: as a running quarterback, right.
- 27:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 27:04Speaker 9: It's a negative thing. But I love you know, I
- 27:09Speaker 9: love Jayson, I love Jalen Hurst, I love you know,
- 27:13Speaker 9: I mean I think Lamar Jackson is absolutely fantastic, and
- 27:17Speaker 9: my homes is Off obviously a great player. It's a
- 27:19Speaker 9: lot of great players. I love my man up in
- 27:23Speaker 9: the Buffalo. He's definitely something who's somebody. I love that
- 27:28Speaker 9: I watched him play man. I mean, it's just the
- 27:32Speaker 9: quarterback play is phenomenal. Guys are very accurate and then
- 27:36Speaker 9: they get to showcase the athleticism and move to change
- 27:39Speaker 9: in different ways. I think that's exciting and uh, I
- 27:43Speaker 9: love to watch them.
- 27:44Speaker 8: And I think just to touch on that, you know,
- 27:46Speaker 8: being a quarterback, you know, coming up in the in
- 27:48Speaker 8: the nineties, it was sort of that distinction either you
- 27:51Speaker 8: was a running quarterback or you was a passing quarterback.
- 27:55Speaker 8: Even though we had guys like Steve Young and John Elways,
- 27:58Speaker 8: it was still like you were still category is either
- 28:00Speaker 8: one or the other. So as your game of all,
- 28:03Speaker 8: particularly because I know you did a lot of running college,
- 28:05Speaker 8: but you also did your first.
- 28:06Speaker 2: Running in the in the NFL.
- 28:08Speaker 8: Was that something you were like conscious of or you
- 28:11Speaker 8: were just you were just out there playing ball.
- 28:14Speaker 9: I'm playing ball. I was. I was definitely constantly mean
- 28:17Speaker 9: because you know, my coach always say, man, get down,
- 28:19Speaker 9: get down, you know, but I you know, I was
- 28:22Speaker 9: squadding five fifty and you know, I was running up
- 28:25Speaker 9: for five man, and I went, I wasn't. I felt
- 28:28Speaker 9: like I was going. I felt like I was either
- 28:30Speaker 9: going to make a guy in there or punishing. Yeah,
- 28:33Speaker 9: that was my mentality, you know what I'm saying. So
- 28:35Speaker 9: you know, I my main goal was to move the
- 28:38Speaker 9: change if I wanted to put up in position to
- 28:41Speaker 9: get points, whether it's running or throwing. You know, I
- 28:44Speaker 9: never said, you know, I don't want to run on
- 28:47Speaker 9: this play, because the defense a lot of times dictated,
- 28:50Speaker 9: you know, how you got to most the change sometimes.
- 28:52Speaker 9: So I just wanted to be like a Swiss Army
- 28:55Speaker 9: Knight to be able to, you know, be two different
- 28:58Speaker 9: ways with maybe come you.
- 29:02Speaker 8: Had you had thirty four rushing touchdowns and and as
- 29:07Speaker 8: negative as a running quarterback title could be. Brother, that's
- 29:12Speaker 8: that's that's an amazing that's an amazing number for a quarterback.
- 29:17Speaker 9: Yeah, oh yeah, thank you y'all put them. I didn't.
- 29:21Speaker 9: It didn't matter to me. It only mattered that we
- 29:24Speaker 9: got the points. You know, I remember that year, the
- 29:26Speaker 9: year I had ten touchdowns in one year, right, So
- 29:29Speaker 9: but I could have had twenty because Moe Williams had
- 29:32Speaker 9: ten touchdowns also from the had about eight or nine
- 29:35Speaker 9: from the one yard line. I could have quarterback sticked
- 29:38Speaker 9: all of him. But he you know, he's always tell me, man,
- 29:40Speaker 9: let me get the touchdowns. So I know, so I'll
- 29:44Speaker 9: tell her. I said, you better get on first to
- 29:45Speaker 9: seke it down because the third time.
- 29:50Speaker 3: And you had and you had it.
- 29:53Speaker 9: It was a good thing, man. And I just always
- 29:55Speaker 9: wanted to get the points that didn't. I wasn't. I
- 29:58Speaker 9: didn't care about who got it to be, but I
- 30:00Speaker 9: just wanted to make sure we put us in some
- 30:02Speaker 9: positions to try to win games.
- 30:04Speaker 8: Right as one hundred and eighty five pound cornerback, Bro,
- 30:08Speaker 8: you had two thousand and six hundred and fifty two
- 30:11Speaker 8: rushing yards.
- 30:13Speaker 2: Bro, you can't come over there by.
- 30:15Speaker 8: Me like you like you got to go the other
- 30:17Speaker 8: way or something, because I'm gonna have miss that.
- 30:21Speaker 9: Bro.
- 30:21Speaker 2: That's that's a that's a ton of yards.
- 30:23Speaker 9: Man. Yeah, man, I hate, I gotta tell you I'm
- 30:26Speaker 9: signing to I was trying to put it in a
- 30:28Speaker 9: position to get points and win, man. That's all it
- 30:30Speaker 9: was about. It wasn't. I never was a stat chaser.
- 30:33Speaker 9: Like that. I didn't care if I threw for three
- 30:36Speaker 9: hundred or three for one hundred. I don't care if
- 30:38Speaker 9: I've ran for twenty or for one hundred. Didn't matter
- 30:40Speaker 9: to me. I only cared about the point in the
- 30:43Speaker 9: win loss call. That's really that mattered.
- 30:46Speaker 8: Yeah, And I just had one more question to that
- 30:48Speaker 8: as far, because you said something earlier about not necessarily
- 30:52Speaker 8: having a consistent offensive coordinator at least in your time
- 30:56Speaker 8: in the NFL, and I want you to just to
- 30:58Speaker 8: articulate to people how difficult that can be because at
- 31:02Speaker 8: the point that you can like master office, you get
- 31:04Speaker 8: to know you are you and the OC are on
- 31:07Speaker 8: the same page. Then you leave, you got to start
- 31:09Speaker 8: all over. I know Jayalen Hurts and a lot of
- 31:11Speaker 8: the young guys are going through that now. So how
- 31:14Speaker 8: difficult is that?
- 31:15Speaker 9: Just as a professional, it is very imperative importance for
- 31:22Speaker 9: the office coordinator and the quarterback to be on the
- 31:24Speaker 9: same page. Is I can't even put in the work
- 31:26Speaker 9: how important it is because it's it's it's like it's
- 31:31Speaker 9: like night day. If you don't if you're not on
- 31:33Speaker 9: the same page, if you don't know why the office
- 31:35Speaker 9: of Coordinator is calling up certain play in a certain situation.
- 31:39Speaker 9: Your your thought process isn't right. And I mean from
- 31:43Speaker 9: I had good I'm not saying I didn't have any
- 31:45Speaker 9: other Girlmin's coordinators, but we I don't think we were
- 31:48Speaker 9: in sync like I was with Scott Lanahan, you know,
- 31:52Speaker 9: and and it just was clicking, man. And I noticed
- 31:56Speaker 9: that when I when he left, it was it was
- 31:59Speaker 9: like I was sometimes I feel I was out there alone,
- 32:02Speaker 9: you know, And that's a that's a tough thing when
- 32:04Speaker 9: you're out there quarterback. You don't if you don't have
- 32:06Speaker 9: your eyes up there, you know, being able to tell
- 32:09Speaker 9: you because obviously if most quarterbacks are not all quarterbacks
- 32:13Speaker 9: have the ability to change the play at any time anyway.
- 32:16Speaker 9: But if you want to, you want to know why
- 32:18Speaker 9: he's calling what he's calling. And it's a rhythm thing too,
- 32:21Speaker 9: you know, the rhythm thing, and you know, you pay quarterback.
- 32:25Speaker 9: And if you can't get in the rhythm, which office coordinator,
- 32:28Speaker 9: it could be some day it could be a lot
- 32:29Speaker 9: of three and outs. And that's the worst thing ever
- 32:31Speaker 9: to give a three outs.
- 32:33Speaker 8: And I think people don't really like they can't conceptualize
- 32:36Speaker 8: that they they I think they made for people who
- 32:38Speaker 8: never didn't play the position. They're just looking on field
- 32:41Speaker 8: and how that manifests. But to have that all firs
- 32:44Speaker 8: of coordinator, because I mean, if you're really clicking, then
- 32:47Speaker 8: y'all can even finish each other sentences.
- 32:50Speaker 2: Y'all.
- 32:50Speaker 8: It's almost like you can look at him, he can
- 32:52Speaker 8: look at you and you notice set. You know, to
- 32:54Speaker 8: play like it ain't even got to be articulated, and
- 32:57Speaker 8: people don't understand, like if you don't have that, or
- 33:00Speaker 8: if you're in conflict or you're thinking one way and
- 33:02Speaker 8: he's thinking another, then it just messes up the timing
- 33:05Speaker 8: and rhythm of not only just the office, but it
- 33:08Speaker 8: can do damage to the whole team as well.
- 33:11Speaker 9: Definitely, definitely, man, it's very important to just as the
- 33:14Speaker 9: OC or who's not. It ain't got to be who's
- 33:17Speaker 9: ever calling the play. Yeah, you know, OC, don't call
- 33:20Speaker 9: the play the head coach officer, but you've got to
- 33:22Speaker 9: be in sync with that that person as a quarterback.
- 33:25Speaker 9: And in my career, the success the years I was
- 33:28Speaker 9: very successful, it was when I kind of knew why
- 33:32Speaker 9: he was calling something, when he was calling it and
- 33:34Speaker 9: what we were trying to accomplish.
- 33:36Speaker 11: Yeah, So Dante I'm going to go on a different
- 33:40Speaker 11: path here.
- 33:40Speaker 10: It's kind of an opinion question.
- 33:42Speaker 11: So I want to I want to talk about a
- 33:44Speaker 11: person that I know, Carl admires a lot.
- 33:47Speaker 10: That's Aaron Rodgers coming off.
- 33:51Speaker 2: So Dante's backdropp This is she's a Packer fan. Okay,
- 33:55Speaker 2: Well you don't have to tell him that.
- 33:57Speaker 11: Yeah, so so so Dante. He's you know, he's coming
- 34:04Speaker 11: off a major injury. He's entering his twenty first season,
- 34:08Speaker 11: and he's signed with the Steelers. You've experienced a major
- 34:13Speaker 11: injury like that and tried to continue your career with
- 34:16Speaker 11: the Dolphins, Raiders and Lions after the Vikings, correct after
- 34:20Speaker 11: you had your knee injury. So what do you think
- 34:24Speaker 11: fans should expect from Aaron Rodgers in Steeler Country? Do
- 34:27Speaker 11: you think he'll be successful in twenty twenty five or
- 34:30Speaker 11: do you feel like he should just have already ridden
- 34:32Speaker 11: off hto the sunset?
- 34:33Speaker 10: What are your opinions on him?
- 34:35Speaker 9: I'm going to tell you, with his skill set, if
- 34:38Speaker 9: they can keep him off the ground, and with the
- 34:41Speaker 9: receivers they have, and I mean, he's a very accurate quarterback.
- 34:47Speaker 9: He's obviously he knows the game. Had it out. It's
- 34:52Speaker 9: an interesting thing. I think he gets I mean, they
- 34:55Speaker 9: come down to and they protected and not get him
- 34:58Speaker 9: in because of you know, you know, you get him
- 34:59Speaker 9: here a few times. You know, you know, he's not
- 35:02Speaker 9: he's not a young guy anymore. So that's that's you know,
- 35:06Speaker 9: it might take him longer the hell and there's different
- 35:09Speaker 9: factors than that, so they could protect him and keep
- 35:11Speaker 9: him off the ground. I think they can definitely have
- 35:14Speaker 9: a lot of success because his armors definitely has a pop,
- 35:17Speaker 9: a lot of pop left in and he's a very
- 35:19Speaker 9: very accurate quarterback, and he's pritpo and he knows the game.
- 35:23Speaker 9: So with those things, if he if he they gotta say,
- 35:27Speaker 9: if they healthy, they can definitely have a lot of
- 35:29Speaker 9: success with that team.
- 35:31Speaker 8: And see and and to that point, like I you know,
- 35:34Speaker 8: I played, you know with Tommy Kramer, you know, and
- 35:37Speaker 8: he toward the end of his career, and then I
- 35:40Speaker 8: was able to play in Minnesota for long enough to
- 35:44Speaker 8: see other players, other quarterbacks who were getting towards the
- 35:47Speaker 8: end of their career.
- 35:50Speaker 2: It's interesting to me when you start talking about.
- 35:54Speaker 8: Because because because Tommy, Tommy didn't have to do a
- 35:57Speaker 8: whole lot of anything like he just knew the position
- 36:01Speaker 8: like he he just knew what he was gonna need
- 36:05Speaker 8: to do.
- 36:06Speaker 2: He could just get.
- 36:06Speaker 8: Out there and and he could just see it and
- 36:11Speaker 8: and and people talk a lot about the game slowing down, yep.
- 36:17Speaker 8: So when the game slowed down for you, was it
- 36:21Speaker 8: a situation to where you were like, Okay, I can
- 36:24Speaker 8: I'm seeing all this, I can make this check, I
- 36:27Speaker 8: can make all these changes in the cause of what
- 36:29Speaker 8: I could. I could pretty much do what I want
- 36:31Speaker 8: because you could see and you understood the game as
- 36:35Speaker 8: a whole, and it was just like you were looking
- 36:38Speaker 8: at it and seeing it.
- 36:38Speaker 2: Oh, he's getting ready to go do this. It's cover three,
- 36:41Speaker 2: it's cover four.
- 36:42Speaker 8: You know you could you tell me a little bit
- 36:44Speaker 8: about when you got to that place and how comfortable
- 36:47Speaker 8: it made you feel.
- 36:49Speaker 9: I'm gonna tell you, man, it's an amazing thing to be.
- 36:52Speaker 9: I call it the zone. When you're in the zune.
- 36:55Speaker 9: Like you know, my first year, three touchdowns that year,
- 36:59Speaker 9: But I went in the zone. You know, I was
- 37:00Speaker 9: out there, I was playing, I was having success. And
- 37:03Speaker 9: then and you know, my next few years it was
- 37:07Speaker 9: kind of up and down. But then you know, three, well,
- 37:11Speaker 9: coach manand came on two, and we about halfway through
- 37:14Speaker 9: that year week got on the same page. And then
- 37:16Speaker 9: three I was I was kind of it was slowing down,
- 37:19Speaker 9: but if what I hadn't got totally there. But oh four,
- 37:22Speaker 9: I'm telling you, man, I felt like I don't know
- 37:25Speaker 9: if y'all ever watched the Marvel moves and Spider Man
- 37:28Speaker 9: when everything when everything slow down, and he knew me
- 37:31Speaker 9: so fast that everything is really slow to him. That's
- 37:34Speaker 9: how I felt that. I felt like I was a superhero.
- 37:38Speaker 9: I really felt like everything was slow to me, and
- 37:41Speaker 9: it was like I could see it before it happened.
- 37:44Speaker 9: And and I I like to call that when you're
- 37:46Speaker 9: in the zone and it's like you can't be stopping
- 37:49Speaker 9: and that that is an amazing thing to be in
- 37:51Speaker 9: the zone and you're you know, athletes know know what
- 37:53Speaker 9: that is, man. And when you're in the zone, man,
- 37:55Speaker 9: it's like no matter what you do, you you you're
- 37:58Speaker 9: a step ahead of everything else. You know, it is
- 38:01Speaker 9: an amazing feeling. And it is a fantastic feeling. You know.
- 38:05Speaker 9: That's the best way I can describe it. Being in
- 38:07Speaker 9: the zone. You know, it is like you're just to
- 38:10Speaker 9: everybody else, You're moving faster, you're doing this great and
- 38:12Speaker 9: these awesome things, but to you, it's like everything is slow, right,
- 38:17Speaker 9: It's just amazing.
- 38:18Speaker 8: And that's and that's crazy because you had the Spider
- 38:21Speaker 8: Man reference and being a quarterback and being on the zone,
- 38:24Speaker 8: that ball feel like it's on the string. You really
- 38:26Speaker 8: feel like you just you can really pit it anywhere
- 38:28Speaker 8: you want to pit it. Everybody else is just moving
- 38:31Speaker 8: like they're just walking, and you just at full speed
- 38:34Speaker 8: all the time.
- 38:34Speaker 2: So that's definitely an amazing feeling.
- 38:38Speaker 9: You know.
- 38:39Speaker 8: And I you know, I think I think to have
- 38:42Speaker 8: some success, at at least at the professional level, I
- 38:47Speaker 8: think everybody has to have a time or a place
- 38:50Speaker 8: where they're in that zone. Because if you don't, I
- 38:54Speaker 8: don't know how you make it, you know what I'm saying,
- 38:56Speaker 8: Because like you, you got to go against this guy
- 38:59Speaker 8: that guy all the time, and at some point you
- 39:02Speaker 8: got to get to a point where you were saying, oh,
- 39:05Speaker 8: it don't matter, I can just I can just do
- 39:08Speaker 8: this because I can remember just in you know, playing
- 39:11Speaker 8: corner in eighty seven. It was like it was it
- 39:16Speaker 8: was easy for me to you know, cover this guy,
- 39:20Speaker 8: cover that guy, and I won't throw names out because
- 39:21Speaker 8: people will be like, oh, he ain't never cover that guy.
- 39:24Speaker 8: But it just got it did It just got comfortable
- 39:29Speaker 8: and you, like you said, you're in that zone man,
- 39:32Speaker 8: and it's and it's great.
- 39:35Speaker 9: Yeah, it's a it's an amazing feeling. And you said
- 39:38Speaker 9: it right, man. You just it's no matter what they
- 39:41Speaker 9: try to do, you a step ahead or teach me
- 39:44Speaker 9: like it's a it's tough, you know. And I've been
- 39:48Speaker 9: on the other end of that when people no matter
- 39:50Speaker 9: what what you try to do, it doesn't work. You know. Yeah,
- 39:54Speaker 9: the word day. But man, being in the zone is
- 39:56Speaker 9: a great feeling, man. And and I would to everybody
- 40:00Speaker 9: who's an athlete to feel that feeling because it's an
- 40:03Speaker 9: awesome feeling.
- 40:05Speaker 11: So Dante, what what are you currently doing now that
- 40:08Speaker 11: your football crew is ever what? What what is your
- 40:11Speaker 11: focus now as far as your hobbies your business kind
- 40:14Speaker 11: of aspects.
- 40:15Speaker 9: Well, I lived out in uh South Florida and Fort
- 40:19Speaker 9: l my wife and I for a while. We were
- 40:23Speaker 9: at a trucking business and we got out of that
- 40:26Speaker 9: and now we're just building our real estate portfolio, you know,
- 40:30Speaker 9: just to you know, we have some properties at our
- 40:32Speaker 9: hometown and we're just building and and and just trying
- 40:36Speaker 9: to you know, make that as successful as possible. But
- 40:40Speaker 9: other than that, we we had six kids, and my
- 40:43Speaker 9: kids are in the house still. He's fourteen and he's
- 40:49Speaker 9: playing a little quarterback now. And yeah, he says he
- 40:54Speaker 9: wants it, but I told him, you know, he's one
- 40:57Speaker 9: thing to say it. But you gotta you gotta, you
- 40:58Speaker 9: gotta be an everyday thing. You got to be for
- 41:00Speaker 9: who you are, you know, you know, do you sit
- 41:03Speaker 9: ups every day? So stuff like that. I'm on them.
- 41:05Speaker 9: And my other two boys are in college. They play
- 41:07Speaker 9: college basketball. They're actually in the transfer port now and
- 41:10Speaker 9: they're looking for up a place to play. So hopefully
- 41:14Speaker 9: they have a team. You know, they signed somewhere soon.
- 41:17Speaker 9: So you know, that's that's what. My brothers are thirty
- 41:21Speaker 9: and twenty eight, and we have three grandkids, three baby girls. Yeah,
- 41:28Speaker 9: so you know that, you know, been my my my
- 41:31Speaker 9: girls in high school and we have a beautiful family.
- 41:34Speaker 9: And that's that's what. I'm just a dad now, you know,
- 41:39Speaker 9: I drop off.
- 41:40Speaker 10: Superdad pick up.
- 41:44Speaker 2: I got a GRANDSONID so I know how that works, man.
- 41:48Speaker 9: Yeah. Yeah, Unfortunately, you know, my my baby girl was
- 41:52Speaker 9: killed in a car accident in twenty twenty and she
- 41:56Speaker 9: was ten years old. Yeah, yeah, I've every day man,
- 41:59Speaker 9: so you know, you know, you know, life, life happens,
- 42:03Speaker 9: you know, and you keep pushing forward. And but I'm
- 42:06Speaker 9: I'm happy, and uh, I appreciate you know, I was
- 42:09Speaker 9: lucky to to start dating my wife when I did.
- 42:13Speaker 9: I got a good girl.
- 42:14Speaker 8: Man.
- 42:14Speaker 9: She's uh, she's been there every step of the way
- 42:16Speaker 9: with men, and uh she's been a definitely a huge
- 42:21Speaker 9: support of me. And uh and and how you know
- 42:24Speaker 9: we get to you know, continue to grow and and
- 42:27Speaker 9: be grandparents and and uh, you know, it's just enjoying life,
- 42:30Speaker 9: you know, That's what it's about.
- 42:33Speaker 8: Well, bro, like I said, I I'm gonna go back
- 42:36Speaker 8: to the opening and and just let you know. And
- 42:40Speaker 8: you you again, you just impressed me every single time
- 42:44Speaker 8: I got a chance to have you be.
- 42:47Speaker 2: I'm around you, listen to you.
- 42:49Speaker 8: You You're a genuine brother to me that I think
- 42:53Speaker 8: that your success, you're all the greatness that comes with you.
- 42:59Speaker 8: I don't I don't even know if you even care
- 43:02Speaker 8: about that at this point, because it doesn't come off.
- 43:05Speaker 8: Did you just come off as a genuine person that
- 43:09Speaker 8: just that just will sit and talk with.
- 43:11Speaker 2: Anybody no matter what.
- 43:12Speaker 8: And I and and like I said, for your for
- 43:15Speaker 8: you to be Dante Calpepper, nobody's thinking that, Like, hey,
- 43:19Speaker 8: I can sit there and talk with him and he'll
- 43:22Speaker 8: talk back to me. And I saw it. I saw
- 43:25Speaker 8: it firsthand, man, So I'm super impressed. And I appreciate
- 43:28Speaker 8: you coming on the show. And uh we'll let you
- 43:32Speaker 8: go now, and uh, thank you, man, and get your
- 43:34Speaker 8: role on.
- 43:37Speaker 9: Hey, David, thank you all for what Man. I gotta say.
- 43:40Speaker 9: I'm equally impressed with you, card Man. I appreciate your
- 43:42Speaker 9: big brother and uh, man, just keep in touch with me, man,
- 43:46Speaker 9: and hopefully we can play some golf. Tom.
- 43:48Speaker 8: I gotta get my golf game. I gotta get my
- 43:50Speaker 8: golf game up New York. I seen you on Instagram
- 43:53Speaker 8: and he was looked like he was hitting about three hundred.
- 43:57Speaker 2: I've seen that one.
- 43:59Speaker 9: I'm right hit a three hundred, but it won't go straight.
- 44:01Speaker 9: It'll go straight, so he can get some lessons.
- 44:07Speaker 8: I'm searching for lessons, man, I'm searching for the lessons
- 44:10Speaker 8: before I get back out there because I and I
- 44:13Speaker 8: can't say I played pretty decent before, but I hadn't
- 44:16Speaker 8: played for for like two three years and and bro,
- 44:20Speaker 8: I already know how that's gonna look. So I gotta
- 44:24Speaker 8: five fee somebody, thank you by somebody to help me out.
- 44:27Speaker 2: But I'll get back with you.
- 44:29Speaker 8: Man, We'll get we'll get in touch, and we'll stay
- 44:31Speaker 8: in We'll stay in touch.
- 44:32Speaker 2: I'll say that for sure.
- 44:34Speaker 9: Man, Thank you all for having me.
- 44:35Speaker 1: Thank you for many All right, cats the kittens?

- 46:05Speaker 7: back into the conversation.
- 46:07Speaker 2: All right, ladies and gentlemen.
- 46:08Speaker 8: I hope you enjoyed that part of the show, and
- 46:11Speaker 8: I think we got a little bit more time, I think,
- 46:13Speaker 8: and Holliston's got a he's got he's got something he's
- 46:15Speaker 8: got to get off his chill.
- 46:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 46:17Speaker 8: So first of all, I just think Dante Copever, he
- 46:19Speaker 8: was just so genuine answered all the questions, just gave
- 46:23Speaker 8: us great detailed insight on you know, his life and everything.
- 46:26Speaker 2: So that was awesome.
- 46:27Speaker 8: But just you know, now we're entering to NBA free agency.
- 46:31Speaker 8: You know, there's been a lot of talk about the
- 46:33Speaker 8: collective bargaining agreements and different things of that nature, and
- 46:37Speaker 8: Kevin Durant.
- 46:37Speaker 2: Want to move again.
- 46:38Speaker 8: So now we have Lebron he originally signed, but I
- 46:42Speaker 8: still think he has the option to opt out or
- 46:44Speaker 8: he has some options. So I think he was He's
- 46:48Speaker 8: possibly do about fifty four million dollars, but I don't
- 46:51Speaker 8: I think he can still move if he if he
- 46:53Speaker 8: wanted to. So I mean, just what are your general thoughts.
- 46:56Speaker 8: You know, he's played twenty plus years, he got his
- 46:58Speaker 8: son in the league. Is it like he's won four championships,
- 47:01Speaker 8: won every championship? Why where he went? Is it time
- 47:04Speaker 8: to go or would you think he'd be damaging his
- 47:07Speaker 8: legacy by possibly going to a different team.
- 47:10Speaker 2: I think yes, I think.
- 47:11Speaker 8: If he goes to another team, I don't think he
- 47:14Speaker 8: can play. He's not getting better. Okay, let's let's just
- 47:18Speaker 8: make this clear. He he's not gonna get that. Age
- 47:22Speaker 8: is not going to allow you.
- 47:23Speaker 2: To get any better.
- 47:25Speaker 8: Okay, And so I'm not a Lebron fan anyway, So
- 47:30Speaker 8: so so I could be I could be a little
- 47:32Speaker 8: prejudice in here, but.
- 47:34Speaker 4: I don't.
- 47:35Speaker 2: I don't really. I don't think he is.
- 47:38Speaker 8: He is doing anything necessarily for the NBA. I don't
- 47:44Speaker 8: think you know what I'm saying, Like, everybody knows Lebron,
- 47:46Speaker 8: everybody knows who he is. Everybody knows he's played on
- 47:49Speaker 8: fifty five teams. So what I mean, what is there
- 47:54Speaker 8: what is there to be left to do?
- 47:56Speaker 2: Yeah? What is there left for him really to do?
- 47:58Speaker 11: Yeah, I'm you know, I'm gonna go back to what
- 48:01Speaker 11: Hollis said about it, would it possibly damage his legacy?
- 48:05Speaker 10: I think we're beyond that with him. So yeah, I
- 48:07Speaker 10: think he could. I think he he can do.
- 48:10Speaker 11: I think it's up to Lebron to decide. Of course
- 48:13Speaker 11: he is, he calls the plays, the shots for his career.
- 48:16Speaker 11: But I think it's up to him what he wants
- 48:18Speaker 11: to do and how to how to bow out gracefully
- 48:20Speaker 11: on his career. And I don't think it's going to
- 48:22Speaker 11: hurt his legacy in the least amount of yeah, amount
- 48:26Speaker 11: of anyway. But you know who's undefeated, father Tom, and
- 48:29Speaker 11: we know that's catching up with him. So you know,
- 48:31Speaker 11: I think that he would be better off probably bowing
- 48:35Speaker 11: out sooner than later. But I don't think anything's going
- 48:38Speaker 11: to diminish his accomplishments in the NBA.
- 48:41Speaker 8: Yeah, I would say, you know, I'm a Laker fan,
- 48:43Speaker 8: and most certainly obviously him being on the roster taking
- 48:47Speaker 8: up that much cap space. I don't know if it's
- 48:50Speaker 8: not going to help us build. But I think for
- 48:52Speaker 8: his maybe own personal legacy, I don't think you want
- 48:55Speaker 8: to go out and you don't make the playoffs.
- 48:56Speaker 2: I think last year they didn't. We didn't make the playoffs.
- 48:59Speaker 8: So I think maybe in his mind, like at least
- 49:02Speaker 8: even if we don't win a championship, I at least
- 49:04Speaker 8: want to go out on a playoff team. I don't
- 49:06Speaker 8: want to go out not making the playoffs. But let
- 49:08Speaker 8: me I know we ain't got much time. But let
- 49:10Speaker 8: me ask you another question. Tom Thibodeau, former head coach
- 49:13Speaker 8: of the New York Knicks. He gets them almost to
- 49:16Speaker 8: the Dance Eastern Conference championship and they let him go right,
- 49:21Speaker 8: What do you guys think about that sort of move?
- 49:23Speaker 8: When you when you, and then again in for context,
- 49:26Speaker 8: this is the first time they had been there in
- 49:28Speaker 8: like twenty maybe thirty years, This first time they've been
- 49:32Speaker 8: relevant in a very long time. I'm gonna say this, Okay,
- 49:37Speaker 8: somebody in the system, whether it's a player, whether it's
- 49:42Speaker 8: somebody somebody in the structure, does not like him. Yeah,
- 49:49Speaker 8: you think it's I think it's personal. I mean, but
- 49:51Speaker 8: he's known to be a grinder. He's known to like
- 49:54Speaker 8: he's playing his he hey guys, and they're gonna grind
- 49:58Speaker 8: out each and every night. You knowing to be a
- 50:00Speaker 8: hard like he plays coach is hard. I'm a star player,
- 50:05Speaker 8: I'm your I'm your main player. I don't and I
- 50:07Speaker 8: don't necessarily know who that is. I'm not I'm not
- 50:10Speaker 8: pointing a finger. I'm just saying, but I'm going seeing
- 50:13Speaker 8: management and saying, look, this dude's pushing, he's yelling and screaming.
- 50:16Speaker 8: He's doing all this kind of stuff that I that
- 50:19Speaker 8: I don't like and the team don't like. And I
- 50:21Speaker 8: think the reason we didn't get all the way was
- 50:23Speaker 8: because of him.
- 50:24Speaker 11: Do you really think there's a player on that team
- 50:26Speaker 11: that has that kind of leverage.
- 50:27Speaker 2: He said player or I said player or management.
- 50:30Speaker 8: Somewhere somebody is not liking who he is as a
- 50:33Speaker 8: person and how he's coaching.
- 50:36Speaker 2: Because he showed your results. He showed you, he showed
- 50:40Speaker 2: the result.
- 50:41Speaker 10: That's what I mean.
- 50:42Speaker 11: Yeah, and in the NBA, but it is ruthless. I mean,
- 50:45Speaker 11: unless you get to the to the level of the championship,
- 50:49Speaker 11: the NBA Championship game, you're it's not good enough, at
- 50:53Speaker 11: least for the fans. I mean, you said there's a
- 50:55Speaker 11: Lakers fan, and you were pretty much, but you.
- 50:58Speaker 2: Don't fire.
- 50:59Speaker 8: But but what I'm saying is like being a Laker fan,
- 51:01Speaker 8: we've we've had championships this century. Yeah right, if you're
- 51:05Speaker 8: a nick fan, you have been nowhere since like Patrick Ewing,
- 51:09Speaker 8: since like the Spree, well maybe Allen Houston teams, Like
- 51:12Speaker 8: this is the first time you've been to this level.
- 51:16Speaker 2: This guy, well, well Mike Brown got hired.
- 51:18Speaker 8: He again, he but with Mike Brown, he's won championships
- 51:21Speaker 8: as a head coach, one championships as an assistant. But
- 51:24Speaker 8: he's also been fired four times as the head coach.
- 51:27Speaker 10: So it's like, I'm just a carousel, don't you.
- 51:30Speaker 2: Yeah, I just don't.
- 51:30Speaker 8: But but if again, if you're coaching you had that
- 51:33Speaker 8: level of success, it's just hard for me to justify
- 51:37Speaker 8: why you were fired other than to your point, it's
- 51:39Speaker 8: just being purely personal.
- 51:41Speaker 11: Yeah, it's did you have that kind of leverage in
- 51:43Speaker 11: the NFL car fired?
- 51:46Speaker 12: No, that was I was on the end result of that.
- 51:50Speaker 12: I mean because and again, even players, you can get
- 51:54Speaker 12: cut for the like when I got cut from the
- 51:57Speaker 12: Vikings and went to the Saints. The whole reason that
- 52:01Speaker 12: I got cut was because me and the dB, the
- 52:03Speaker 12: new dB coach, Danny Green's buddy.
- 52:06Speaker 2: Was the dB coach, and he.
- 52:08Speaker 8: Ain't know nothing about He didn't know nothing about dB
- 52:11Speaker 8: play like, he knew nothing. And we're in the meetings laughing,
- 52:15Speaker 8: and you know, and me and him and had conversation
- 52:19Speaker 8: and he said to me, you don't know how to backpedal.
- 52:22Speaker 8: You or he he said, you back pedal too high.
- 52:25Speaker 8: Now you're a scout becoming a dB coach. I've been
- 52:30Speaker 8: playing my entire career. I'm in year eleven, right, and
- 52:34Speaker 8: you're telling me I don't know how to back credit.
- 52:37Speaker 2: How do I not laugh?
- 52:38Speaker 8: So that's why I'm sure, that's the reason why I
- 52:42Speaker 8: got cut because I just couldn't respect him and I
- 52:45Speaker 8: didn't show him respect because we just didn't get along.
- 52:50Speaker 8: And I'll even go a step further. All within two years,
- 52:55Speaker 8: our whole entire secondary got cut.
- 52:59Speaker 10: And it was because of the new Yeah, the new
- 53:02Speaker 10: dB coach.
- 53:03Speaker 8: Yeah yes, and Denny Green brought it. I mean, that
- 53:06Speaker 8: could be an example of just kind of what's going on.
- 53:08Speaker 8: It's just like I said, it's just it's just amazing,
- 53:11Speaker 8: like in this support environment, when you have success and
- 53:13Speaker 8: then you just like you just let go the next year.
- 53:16Speaker 2: It's just I don't know, it's it's.
- 53:18Speaker 8: It's money and you and you gotta you gotta be
- 53:22Speaker 8: what that person wants.
- 53:23Speaker 2: You to be. And sometimes that sometimes that's tough.
- 53:27Speaker 11: Yeah, but then that person should be held responsible if
- 53:30Speaker 11: they if they fire you know what I mean, Like
- 53:32Speaker 11: they fire a coach that that is is not he
- 53:35Speaker 11: hasn't reached the pinnacle, but he's pushing them closer. And
- 53:38Speaker 11: then you fire this guy and you bring somebody else
- 53:40Speaker 11: in that takes the steps backward. Somebody needs to be
- 53:43Speaker 11: held accountable for that. Don't you think I.
- 53:45Speaker 2: Would think so?
- 53:46Speaker 8: But but but it depends on who that person is
- 53:49Speaker 8: and what his connections is.
- 53:50Speaker 10: It's true too, Jerry, James and Dallas.
- 53:54Speaker 2: I he owns it.
- 53:56Speaker 8: So yeahs all right, Well, ladies and gentlemen, we're gonna
- 54:01Speaker 8: get out of here and we appreciate you, and uh
- 54:05Speaker 8: we'll see again next week.
