- 0:03. Sylvia Lovely: Hello, I'm Sylvia Lovely along with Nancy May, co hosts
- 0:07of Family Tree Food and Stories.
- 0:11College was not in my life master plan.
- 0:13My parents, born to poverty in the hills of eastern Kentucky, did
- 0:17not even finish high school, much less give a thought to college.
- 0:20I was raised in Dayton, Ohio, where my parents headed for opportunity
- 0:24and good paying factory jobs.
- 0:27But one desire, their holy grail, Was making sure their
- 0:30children got a good education.
- 0:32Obligingly, I did very well in school.
- 0:35I remember making a casual but fateful announcement as a senior in high school.
- 0:39Mom, I said one day out of the blue, I want to go to college.
- 0:43She stopped what she was doing.
- 0:45A look on her face halfway between the terror of seeing a ghost and the
- 0:48elation of having her favorite movie star appear in the flesh before her.
- 0:53Finally, the movie star won out.
- 0:55Well, this is great news, she gushed.
- 0:57She didn't stop there.
- 0:59You can go to Wright State University and live at home.
- 1:02Wright State?
- 1:03At home?
- 1:05It reverberated in my head.
- 1:07It was two subdivisions away from our house, practically in the backyard.
- 1:11Out of nowhere, my mouth blurted, No, I need to leave home.
- 1:17My gosh, where did that come from?
- 1:19I asked myself.
- 1:20In my parents world, kids weren't supposed to leave home, ever.
- 1:23My parents already did that once, and were not inclined to let it
- 1:27happen on their parental watch.
- 1:29the world outside was just too big and scary, and I had been pretty sheltered.
- 1:35My mother began to wail and sob.
- 1:37I came close to giving in when suddenly she stopped.
- 1:40I held my breath.
- 1:41The End You were right.
- 1:43You need to leave, but, she added suddenly in a stern voice, you can
- 1:48only go to Moorhead State University.
- 1:51Well, I knew that MSU was close to where my parents were born
- 1:54and grew up, and no matter their tough upbringing, it was home.
- 1:59Realizing I should take while the taking was good, I offered a hearty
- 2:03head shake and declared that to be the perfect choice, as if I had any other.
- 2:08She got the last word with, In a way, you will still be home.
- 2:13So what does that story of a young girl determined to find her
- 2:16own path but with limited social graces have to do with food?
- 2:21Well, doesn't everything end up in a story about food?
- 2:24Well, here's mine.
- 2:26I was doing well and in the middle of my first semester at Moorhead when
- 2:29I was invited to a luncheon with a handful of professors and classmates
- 2:34at a local sit down restaurant to discuss scholarship opportunities.
- 2:39I was nervous.
- 2:41This was a big deal.
- 2:42And these were the most important people who had ever invited me to anything.
- 2:46However, I had never eaten at a sit down restaurant before.
- 2:52My father would have declared such activity as unnecessary frivolity.
- 2:56I carefully analyzed the situation.
- 2:58Step 1.
- 2:59The server delivered water and bread to the table.
- 3:02Okay, so far.
- 3:03Step 2.
- 3:04Order from the menu.
- 3:06I ordered a cheeseburger, a safe choice.
- 3:09And with newfound confidence, I got this.
- 3:12And then, a step three I never imagined.
- 3:15Miss, she offered.
- 3:17Would you like soup or salad as a side?
- 3:20At least I thought I knew what she said.
- 3:22I had only seconds.
- 3:23I'll have that soup or salad, I proclaimed proudly.
- 3:27The table grew silent as one dear soul leaned over to explain.
- 3:32After that bout of embarrassment, I recovered and enjoyed my
- 3:35college experience and did well.
- 3:37Morehead State University, I later learned, specializes on growing
- 3:41turnips that fall off trucks and somehow turning sow's ears into purses.
- 3:46Today, my memories are with fondness and good humor.
- 3:49Through the power of food, we tap into the most natural thing we all do.
- 3:54Eat and realize that food lies at the heart of most of our stories.
- 3:58Close your eyes.
- 4:00Think back of your own food stories.
- 4:04I promise they will lead to a myriad of memories.
- 4:07Write them down, and better yet, share them with us.
- 4:10Nancy May and Sylvia Lovely, co hosts of Family Tree Food and Stories.
- 4:16We look forward to joining your family with ours as we unite around the memories
- 4:20of food, recipes, kitchens, gatherings, laughter, mishaps, and yes, moments
- 4:25of embarrassment, and ultimately, joy.
