- 0:08Speaker 1: We are going to lay out the off season to
- 0:09Speaker 1: do list for the Philadelphia Phillies right now with Ruben
- 0:12Speaker 1: Tomorrow Junior, and you can catch rum in a lot
- 0:15Speaker 1: of different spots, including on Phillies broadcasts and the so
- 0:19Speaker 1: popular Phillies Show one of the three stars of the
- 0:21Speaker 1: show there, Ruben. Great to have you on and let's
- 0:24Speaker 1: do this right from the jump. You know this and
- 0:26Speaker 1: how to do this more than anyone. As a former
- 0:28Speaker 1: GM of the Phillies, how would you lay out their
- 0:31Speaker 1: off season strategy one through three? Top of your list.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Great to be with you guys right out of the shoot.
- 0:37Speaker 3: I don't think there's a more important position than the
- 0:40Speaker 3: catching position.
- 0:42Speaker 2: On the field. I know Kratzy well would believe that.
- 0:46Speaker 3: Number One, I think they have to figure out what
- 0:47Speaker 3: they're going to be doing at the catching position.
- 0:50Speaker 2: Obviously with JT. Realmuto being a free agent, that's a
- 0:53Speaker 2: big one.
- 0:54Speaker 3: Number Two, they got to figure out that big bat
- 0:57Speaker 3: in the middle of the lineup, whether it's going to
- 0:59Speaker 3: end up being you know, the kyleeg Sharberers of the world,
- 1:01Speaker 3: but you know that big bat in the middle of
- 1:04Speaker 3: the lineup that's really important for them.
- 1:06Speaker 2: And then finally, it's the bullpen.
- 1:08Speaker 3: They have to tighten that bullpen up and get somebody
- 1:11Speaker 3: to take the baseball to Juan Duran, I think the
- 1:15Speaker 3: pen has to be addressed as well.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Those would be the three and in that order for me.
- 1:20Speaker 4: All right, Well, catcher the most important position on the field,
- 1:24Speaker 4: not some utility in field or whatever position you really were.
- 1:28Speaker 4: I know you played some left, but whatever catcher is it?
- 1:32Speaker 2: JT.
- 1:33Speaker 4: Real, Muto or bust for the Phillies Because you look
- 1:36Speaker 4: at the market, there's not a lot out there. And
- 1:39Speaker 4: I don't think Aaron Stubbs and Raphael Marshawan are putting
- 1:43Speaker 4: together one hundred and sixty two games between the two
- 1:45Speaker 4: of them.
- 1:47Speaker 2: I would tend to agree with you. I like Marshaan
- 1:49Speaker 2: a lot.
- 1:50Speaker 3: I just don't know if he can if he can
- 1:51Speaker 3: catch one hundred games, one hundred and ten games. I
- 1:54Speaker 3: like Stubby as well. I like both of those guys.
- 1:56Speaker 3: I just don't know whether you can put your egg
- 2:00Speaker 3: in that basket. And JT is as good as anybody preparing.
- 2:03Speaker 3: I think the pitchers have a tremendous amount of confidence
- 2:07Speaker 3: in his preparation, his knowledge what they feel and how
- 2:12Speaker 3: they feel throwing to him. I think in a lot
- 2:15Speaker 3: of ways, it is JT or bust, And if it's
- 2:18Speaker 3: not JT, then they're gonna have to figure out some way,
- 2:21Speaker 3: some ingenious way to try to get somebody in a trade, somehow,
- 2:26Speaker 3: some way. Just because, with all due respect to raf
- 2:30Speaker 3: L Marshawn and to Garrett Stubbs, I mean, you're talking
- 2:33Speaker 3: about two pretty garden good backups. I just don't know
- 2:37Speaker 3: that with the importance of what you know this team
- 2:41Speaker 3: is about, which is pitching. I think that's their biggest strength.
- 2:44Speaker 3: They have to have somebody who can handle that pitching
- 2:47Speaker 3: and do it well.
- 2:48Speaker 4: I want to reiterate what you said there because you
- 2:50Speaker 4: actually had a conversation with me after my twenty twelve season.
- 2:54Speaker 4: People were like, well, do they need to re sign
- 2:57Speaker 4: Carlos Ruiz? Do they need to? Like, It's like, I
- 3:00Speaker 4: had a good season, but a backup is way different
- 3:04Speaker 4: than a starting catcher. Can you say what goes into
- 3:08Speaker 4: maybe trying to sign a guy like this who clearly
- 3:12Speaker 4: sees the team you were a GM, sees the team
- 3:15Speaker 4: needs a starting catcher. He's probably gonna get in a
- 3:19Speaker 4: three year, fifteen million dollar range. How hard is that
- 3:23Speaker 4: for you? And I know, you worked with mister Montgomery
- 3:25Speaker 4: when you were the GM, and he was very straightforward.
- 3:29Speaker 4: He was very much market Hey, we want to treat
- 3:31Speaker 4: this guy right. How hard is that for you as
- 3:33Speaker 4: a GM when you're trying to lure him back? Oh,
- 3:37Speaker 4: and you really need it?
- 3:39Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean it's difficult.
- 3:40Speaker 3: It's a little bit of a rock and a hard
- 3:42Speaker 3: place because the you know, the agent knows, and the
- 3:46Speaker 3: player knows that they really need him, and they also
- 3:49Speaker 3: know that the marketplace out there is not very strong.
- 3:52Speaker 2: I mean, where else are they going to go?
- 3:55Speaker 3: That said, I do think JT loves it in Philadelphia.
- 3:58Speaker 3: I think this is the place he wants to be.
- 4:01Speaker 3: They did have a situation like this earlier in his
- 4:04Speaker 3: career and he ended up signing back with him. It's
- 4:06Speaker 3: not the first time this might happen. But I think
- 4:10Speaker 3: that JAT also owes it to himself to find out
- 4:12Speaker 3: where the marketplace is right. That's that's the beauty of
- 4:15Speaker 3: being a free agent, and that's what he's gonna do.
- 4:18Speaker 3: There may be a team out there that goes crazy.
- 4:20Speaker 3: Buster Posey might say, the Giants might say, Hey, guess what, brother,
- 4:24Speaker 3: I need a catcher too. I'm gonna go to four years.
- 4:27Speaker 3: I'm going to go to some ridiculous number. Who knows
- 4:30Speaker 3: does Steve Cohen go that crazy knowing that even though
- 4:34Speaker 3: he's got a young catcher, you know, in his stable,
- 4:38Speaker 3: maybe he wants to get a veteran guy because he
- 4:39Speaker 3: knows how important that catching position is. Who knows, I
- 4:43Speaker 3: know it's important. The whole industry knows it's important. And
- 4:46Speaker 3: he's really the only guy out there. He is older,
- 4:50Speaker 3: and his offensive numbers are starting to drift south, but
- 4:56Speaker 3: his ability to handle the staff is as good as
- 4:59Speaker 3: any in baseball. And you know, you start thinking about
- 5:03Speaker 3: the Yadier Molinas of the world. How important would was
- 5:06Speaker 3: he to the Saint Louis for many, many years. You
- 5:10Speaker 3: sort of have to overpay for that, And I think
- 5:12Speaker 3: that's what the Phillies you're gonna have to do.
- 5:16Speaker 1: If you are still carrying a clunky, leather brick that
- 5:20Speaker 1: can be mistaken for an old school wallet, May I
- 5:23Speaker 1: introduce you to what Eric Kratz is getting himself for
- 5:26Speaker 1: the holidays.
- 5:28Speaker 4: I mean, this is the greatest wallet that I've ever
- 5:31Speaker 4: seen in my life. Your credit card's fitting here. It's adjustable,
- 5:35Speaker 4: lifetime guaranteed, like what like this is a must have
- 5:40Speaker 4: for the holidays.
- 5:41Speaker 1: Absolute must have Ridge Olive matt That is a design
- 5:45Speaker 1: that Kratz has right now and you can get a
- 5:47Speaker 1: hold of that. There's over fifty plus colors and styles
- 5:49Speaker 1: to choose from. Over at Ridge. You can even get
- 5:52Speaker 1: a wallet that features every NFL, MLB or college team.
- 5:55Speaker 3: And for a.
- 5:56Speaker 1: Limited time, Ridge is having their huge Black Friday sale.
- 5:59Speaker 1: Head to Ridge slash foul to get up to forty
- 6:02Speaker 1: seven percent off your order. This is by far the
- 6:04Speaker 1: biggest discount they've given all year. That's Ridge dot Com
- 6:07Speaker 1: slash foul for up to forty seven percent off your
- 6:09Speaker 1: order during their biggest sale of the year. After your purchase,
- 6:13Speaker 1: they'll ask you where you heard about Ridge. Tell them
- 6:15Speaker 1: Foul Territory sent you.
- 6:18Speaker 5: Hey, Ruben, nice to officially meet you. We're gonna move
- 6:21Speaker 5: down that checklist and go to the big bat. Kyle
- 6:25Speaker 5: Schwarber probably the obvious choice, but it feels like the
- 6:28Speaker 5: theme of the offseason right now is breaking up the band.
- 6:31Speaker 5: You know, we saw what happened with Marcus Sime and
- 6:33Speaker 5: Brandon Nimo. Are we looking at a situation maybe in
- 6:36Speaker 5: Philadelphia where I know Schwarber is not the problem in
- 6:40Speaker 5: that clubhouse, and they'll be a fall up with that.
- 6:43Speaker 5: But is it Are they at the point where they've
- 6:45Speaker 5: had this band together for so long that maybe some
- 6:48Speaker 5: parts need to be separated a little bit to see
- 6:51Speaker 5: where the Phillies can really go.
- 6:53Speaker 2: KP.
- 6:54Speaker 3: This is why, and great to see you again and
- 6:57Speaker 3: to meet you here on on territory. I have to
- 7:01Speaker 3: say for the Phillies' is one of the most fascinating
- 7:04Speaker 3: off seasons ever because yes, they have two great players
- 7:08Speaker 3: that they want to bring back and are really important
- 7:11Speaker 3: to this ball club and to the heart of this
- 7:12Speaker 3: ball club in Schwarber and JT.
- 7:16Speaker 2: But at the same.
- 7:16Speaker 3: Time, they cannot run it back. They just cannot do
- 7:20Speaker 3: that because they've seen what it happens at the end
- 7:23Speaker 3: of the day, and it's really important for him to
- 7:25Speaker 3: mix it up now.
- 7:26Speaker 2: So where do they go?
- 7:28Speaker 3: I do believe that Schwarber is one of the most
- 7:31Speaker 3: influential players in baseball in a lot of ways, not
- 7:35Speaker 3: just on the field with what he does, but off
- 7:38Speaker 3: the field with what he brings to the table. This
- 7:41Speaker 3: is a guy that if I was a GM I've
- 7:44Speaker 3: been fighting my rear end off to bring to my
- 7:47Speaker 3: ball club because he wins, He understands what it is
- 7:51Speaker 3: to be a teammate.
- 7:53Speaker 2: His teammates love him. He is a community service guy.
- 7:58Speaker 3: He's really the total package and it's really nice to
- 8:01Speaker 3: be able to have spent some time with the man.
- 8:04Speaker 3: And the difficulty of that is, if you bring him
- 8:07Speaker 3: back for the Phillies, do they have the flexibility in
- 8:11Speaker 3: their payroll to really do much more? I know we
- 8:14Speaker 3: talked about bringing JT back already. So they bring both
- 8:17Speaker 3: these guys back, where do they go? How do they
- 8:20Speaker 3: change things up? This is where Dave Dombrowski's you know,
- 8:24Speaker 3: his role in this situation is not just a difficult one,
- 8:29Speaker 3: but a little bit rock in a hard place because
- 8:33Speaker 3: they may have to change things up and in some
- 8:35Speaker 3: ways they're gonna have to be ready to go to
- 8:37Speaker 3: Plan B or C, and it may not.
- 8:41Speaker 2: It sounds crazy.
- 8:42Speaker 3: Even though I would love to have Schwarber back and
- 8:44Speaker 3: he's such an integral part of the team, if they
- 8:47Speaker 3: don't bring him back, that does give them a chance
- 8:50Speaker 3: to do some other things.
- 8:51Speaker 2: Maybe they bring up Pete Alonzo in.
- 8:53Speaker 3: Maybe they think that that's the right handed bat that
- 8:55Speaker 3: gives a little protection for Harper. Maybe it's a go bashet,
- 9:00Speaker 3: someone to mix things up, who can play a variety
- 9:02Speaker 3: of infield positions, just to change up this ball club,
- 9:06Speaker 3: which I think is an essential piece of this too
- 9:09Speaker 3: fascinating offseason. And I honestly I don't want to be
- 9:12Speaker 3: in Davin Bowski's shoes.
- 9:16Speaker 5: In terms of if Shoorber doesn't come back, are Harper's
- 9:20Speaker 5: days playing the outfield over? Does he now become a
- 9:24Speaker 5: DH assuming you bring in a guy like Pete Longso
- 9:27Speaker 5: to play first base, and in your opinion, Schwarber if
- 9:31Speaker 5: he's gone, is Harper the next guy in line to
- 9:33Speaker 5: kind of be that leader or is it was it
- 9:35Speaker 5: kind of a leader by committee with Schwarber and Harper.
- 9:39Speaker 2: I think it's more of a leader by committee.
- 9:40Speaker 3: Just to answer your last question first, I think Schwarber
- 9:44Speaker 3: probably is a little bit more vocal, someone who would
- 9:47Speaker 3: tend to put his arm around a guy a little
- 9:49Speaker 3: bit more than maybe Harper would JT.
- 9:52Speaker 2: Quiet leader.
- 9:53Speaker 3: Also, a lot of these guys starts. I think this
- 9:56Speaker 3: is one of the reasons why Harrison Bader coming on
- 9:59Speaker 3: at the end of the year was so important for
- 10:01Speaker 3: this ball club because they don't have too many like
- 10:03Speaker 3: quote unquote energy or raw Rod type guys, and I
- 10:07Speaker 3: think you can overstate that sometimes, but for this Phillies team,
- 10:10Speaker 3: I think it was important because everybody's just so calm
- 10:14Speaker 3: and professional that maybe you do need a little swagger,
- 10:17Speaker 3: Maybe you do need a little something something in that clubhouse.
- 10:22Speaker 3: It's it is so interesting to see how things will
- 10:26Speaker 3: play out. As far as Harper is concerned, He's they're
- 10:30Speaker 3: really happy with him at first base. He's made an
- 10:33Speaker 3: amazing adjustment. He's made himself a pretty damn good first baseman.
- 10:37Speaker 3: I think down the road he's gonna end up wanting
- 10:39Speaker 3: to be a d H. I don't know there's any
- 10:40Speaker 3: question about that. But I think he still has the
- 10:44Speaker 3: ability to go to the outfield and and I don't know,
- 10:48Speaker 3: I know it's gonna probably depend on whether it's a
- 10:50Speaker 3: Scott Bores client or or something like that, where whether
- 10:55Speaker 3: or not, you know, Harper goes back out to the outfield.
- 10:59Speaker 3: If I were a betting man, I would assume that
- 11:02Speaker 3: unless a Pete Alonso comes on board, that he's probably
- 11:07Speaker 3: locked in to first base. And even I Pete Alonzo
- 11:10Speaker 3: does come on board, they may just share that DH.
- 11:13Speaker 2: Role rather than move Harper out to right field.
- 11:16Speaker 3: I think he's feeling really comfortable there, and frankly, I'd
- 11:20Speaker 3: be surprised that he would move out to right field
- 11:22Speaker 3: unless unless they end up getting two pieces and it
- 11:27Speaker 3: sort of puts them in a position to make their
- 11:30Speaker 3: best team with him in right field and maybe Alonso
- 11:34Speaker 3: or someone like that.
- 11:35Speaker 2: At first, I.
- 11:36Speaker 4: Mean, he got drafted as a catcher. Ruben, come on,
- 11:38Speaker 4: think with your head here. We can get Harper change.
- 11:42Speaker 4: You know, Mookie switched to shortstop and should have want
- 11:46Speaker 4: to gold gloves, So why can't Harper switch the catcher? No,
- 11:49Speaker 4: I won't. I won't put that on you. You didn't say that,
- 11:52Speaker 4: but I will put it on you. The one part
- 11:54Speaker 4: of the team in the NLDS, part of the Phillies
- 11:59Speaker 4: team that was beaten by the Dodgers, because the Phillies
- 12:03Speaker 4: out hit the Dodgers, the starting pitching beat the vaunted
- 12:07Speaker 4: Dodgers starting pitching. They out pitched him the bullpen. And
- 12:11Speaker 4: you said, they need to do they need to do
- 12:14Speaker 4: some big things. Obviously Alvarado will be coming back, and
- 12:17Speaker 4: you know, you don't know what he's gonna give you,
- 12:19Speaker 4: but obviously nine million dollars, it was an easy yes.
- 12:22Speaker 4: And then Johann Duran is going to be the closer.
- 12:26Speaker 4: What are they looking for and is it something that
- 12:28Speaker 4: I think maybe Dombrowski fell short last offseason building it
- 12:32Speaker 4: up enough.
- 12:34Speaker 3: Yeah, that is the trickiest part of the game, I think,
- 12:37Speaker 3: because you just don't know what you're gonna get from
- 12:39Speaker 3: year to year. I mean, unless you're Mariano Rivera, you
- 12:42Speaker 3: really don't know what you're gonna get out of your
- 12:44Speaker 3: bullpen guys, and they have a phenomenal closer now made
- 12:49Speaker 3: a great tray to get Deron.
- 12:52Speaker 2: Now you've got to get somebody to hand the baseball
- 12:54Speaker 2: to him. Now.
- 12:55Speaker 3: He got Robertson at the end of the year, which
- 12:57Speaker 3: I think was important. He was hoping that Kirkering would
- 13:00Speaker 3: be able to handle that. They had a bunch of
- 13:03Speaker 3: other you know guys Romano that they tried. It's a
- 13:06Speaker 3: difficult process and I think it's really important. There's a
- 13:10Speaker 3: lot of things that are hinging on where they go here.
- 13:14Speaker 3: Do they have the confidence and Kirkering can bounce back
- 13:17Speaker 3: from that very very difficult playoff series and the one
- 13:20Speaker 3: particular play does he have it in him to be
- 13:23Speaker 3: able to bounce back and be a guy that can
- 13:25Speaker 3: be a set up guy. I think that he can
- 13:27Speaker 3: in some ways, but you can't necessarily count on that
- 13:31Speaker 3: to be the guy. They're thinking about the possibility of
- 13:34Speaker 3: maybe moving Strong just to change things.
- 13:36Speaker 2: Up a little bit.
- 13:37Speaker 3: Because they have Alvarado and they have Tanner Banks from
- 13:40Speaker 3: the left side, maybe they move Strom in a deal
- 13:43Speaker 3: where they go lefty for righty. I think they need
- 13:47Speaker 3: a right hander in addition, or someone that can get
- 13:51Speaker 3: both rights and lefties out in the eighth inning that
- 13:54Speaker 3: they can hand the ball to Drawn with knowing that
- 13:57Speaker 3: they can, you know, make this like more of a
- 14:00Speaker 3: six out game. And that's why I think the bullpen
- 14:03Speaker 3: is a huge one for them. Maybe somebody can step
- 14:07Speaker 3: up from the minor leagues. Maybe this young kid named
- 14:09Speaker 3: Gage can step forward at some point during the course
- 14:13Speaker 3: of the season.
- 14:14Speaker 2: I think that's a long shot. I don't know that
- 14:16Speaker 2: he has the ability to do that. I know they
- 14:19Speaker 2: want to make him a starter, but I do think
- 14:22Speaker 2: that the bullpen is.
- 14:22Speaker 3: An important piece here and love to have somebody be
- 14:25Speaker 3: able to hand the baseball to Deron.
- 14:29Speaker 1: Hey, for all the parents out there with teens, it's
- 14:31Speaker 1: more hectic now than ever.

- 15:30Speaker 4: All right off your list and maybe not necessarily the
- 15:32Speaker 4: Dombrowski Way in the off season but traits you already
- 15:37Speaker 4: mentioned possibly Strom to be creative. But last year I
- 15:41Speaker 4: heard rumors of Costianos and Boem packaged for Kyle Tucker.
- 15:46Speaker 4: Is there a trade from the position player standpoint that
- 15:51Speaker 4: could net them some of these three needs.
- 15:55Speaker 3: Yeah, Well they're sort of locked into you know, they're
- 15:58Speaker 3: locked in the turnered into Harper. They're not going anywhere.
- 16:02Speaker 3: They're the big contracts that basically are going nowhere. Wheelers
- 16:05Speaker 3: not going anywhere, and I don't think NOA is going
- 16:07Speaker 3: anywhere either. So they've got some pretty big contracts that
- 16:10Speaker 3: aren't being moved. Now, can you move a guy like Stott.
- 16:15Speaker 2: He's under control.
- 16:16Speaker 3: Can you move a guy like Bom, he's under control
- 16:18Speaker 3: for just one more year? What is the value out
- 16:23Speaker 3: there for a guy like that unless it's a team
- 16:25Speaker 3: that just needs that one piece for one year, a
- 16:29Speaker 3: right handed bat. I mean, there's value in Alec Bohem,
- 16:33Speaker 3: there's no question. But his value might be for the Phillies.
- 16:36Speaker 2: He might be a higher value. And that's one of
- 16:37Speaker 2: the reasons why he never got moved last year.
- 16:39Speaker 3: So it will be very interesting how they're going to
- 16:44Speaker 3: ingeniously try to and and and have a little ingenuity
- 16:50Speaker 3: to be able to move pieces around to change things up.
- 16:54Speaker 2: I love Stott. I think he's improving.
- 16:57Speaker 3: I think he made an adjustment with his hands and
- 17:00Speaker 3: at the end of the season last year to get
- 17:02Speaker 3: closer to who he is. And he's a guy that
- 17:05Speaker 3: probably has at least as far as out there in
- 17:09Speaker 3: the industry.
- 17:10Speaker 2: I think he has a little bit more value than
- 17:12Speaker 2: does Alec Bohm.
- 17:13Speaker 3: But I don't really necessarily want to move the guy
- 17:15Speaker 3: because he's a baseball player. So it's a tough situation
- 17:19Speaker 3: that Debrowski's in.
- 17:21Speaker 6: I do think that Alec Bohm has value. The question
- 17:24Speaker 6: is do you move that guy and do you just
- 17:28Speaker 6: switch things up just to switch him up, or do
- 17:31Speaker 6: you move that guy and bring back something of real value?
- 17:35Speaker 6: Can you bring somebody who is a sort of a
- 17:38Speaker 6: lockdown eighth inning guy for the next few years, because
- 17:43Speaker 6: you're you know, if you walk away from Alec Bohm,
- 17:45Speaker 6: man that's like close to what thirty some doubles ninety
- 17:50Speaker 6: plus RBIs and someone who actually makes pretty consistent contact.
- 17:55Speaker 1: In the middle of your order.
- 17:57Speaker 4: I guess they could always move on to Aiden Miller
- 18:00Speaker 4: from the minor leagues, and Justin Crawford could be in
- 18:02Speaker 4: the outfit, all that stuff. You got to listen to
- 18:04Speaker 4: the Philly Show. But that's my last question. Yeah, I
- 18:07Speaker 4: guess it's a question The Philly Show, unbelievable show you do.
- 18:10Speaker 4: You guys do a great job, but it's Todd's Alecki,
- 18:13Speaker 4: Jim Salisbury and you Ruben Tomorrow. Who is Manny, Moe
- 18:18Speaker 4: and Curly from the Three Stooges. If you guys are
- 18:23Speaker 4: if you guys are playing each role.
- 18:25Speaker 3: Well, the funniest guy, I don't know how you I
- 18:27Speaker 3: don't know which one you ranked the funny, how funny
- 18:30Speaker 3: these guys are, But the funniest guy is Jim Salisbury,
- 18:33Speaker 3: without question.
- 18:34Speaker 2: I think the straight man is is Todd's Alecki and me,
- 18:38Speaker 2: I'm just sort of a wild card.
- 18:40Speaker 3: You never know what you're gonna get out of me.
- 18:42Speaker 3: But but I would say I would be the Moe,
- 18:45Speaker 3: I would think, I think that the Curly would probably
- 18:49Speaker 3: be Jim Salisbury.
- 18:52Speaker 2: That's sort of my guess.
- 18:54Speaker 4: Yeah, But.
- 18:56Speaker 2: We have a great we have a great time. We
- 18:58Speaker 2: have a great time and we enjoy it.
