- 0:00Hey there guys. We are back.
- 0:01Dylan and I are here for another episode of Turn Back the Clock.
- 0:05Dylan, how's it going out there in Hawaii?
- 0:07It's early 7:30 in the morning, right around.
- 0:09Here, dude, I got my Disney cup right here.
- 0:12I got my, I did some iced coffee this morning.
- 0:15I'm really excited to talk to you about cards and just talk to
- 0:18you in general, Adam. It's been so long.
- 0:21We we both are on completely different planets basically.
- 0:24So it's very tough to make the timing work every time, but it
- 0:30doesn't matter. Who cares if we go months and
- 0:32months without doing one or we do one every other week?
- 0:34I enjoy talking with you regardless.
- 0:36It's like it's like seeing a friend you haven't seen in ages.
- 0:39There's no weirdness, it's all natural.
- 0:41So ah, freaking punk dude. Let's talk about cards.
- 0:44Love it, man. Yeah, I'm over here.
- 0:46We're five hours difference. I'm over here in what I'm now
- 0:48calling Siberia, formerly Massachusetts, and it's been a
- 0:52heck of a winter here. The the snow is starting to
- 0:54melt, so things are looking up here over over in Siberia, so.
- 0:59I'm over here in literally surfing in my trunks.
- 1:02I didn't even wear a top the other day.
- 1:04It's like just gorgeous out. So perfect every day paradise
- 1:08not too hot. By the way, great show on Hulu
- 1:12Paradise too. It's where you live and it's
- 1:13also a cool show to check out. Anyone out there?
- 1:15We're watching it last night, my wife and I.
- 1:17It's a really cool show. Is it a?
- 1:20Is it a series? Yes, Yeah.
- 1:22OK, good. Because.
- 1:24We're looking for one, me and my wife.
- 1:26It's always like when you get down with one, you're like, oh,
- 1:28and then you're scrolling, try a couple and you're like, do you
- 1:32like? Do you like?
- 1:33Like it's not unrealistic so much, but like, do you like end
- 1:37of the world like catastrophe type movies?
- 1:39See, those are my favorite movies of all time.
- 1:41You. Got market that watch this show
- 1:43is is already season 1's already was last couple years ago or a
- 1:48year ago and they just started season 2.
- 1:50So you guys could binge through a whole season right now, Hulu?
- 1:53Oh, sick dude, that my wife like she I love end of the world
- 1:58stuff because I feel like like it's like if it's end of the
- 2:01world, it doesn't. It's not depressing because
- 2:03everybody's involved, right? It's like everyone in the world.
- 2:06It is what it is. It's a really cool show, well,
- 2:10well acted. And you'll notice a lot of
- 2:13people in it that you probably know, but it's yeah, it's a good
- 2:15one. So if my wife is sponsored by
- 2:18Hulu. My wife won't watch shows if
- 2:21there's not famous people, so that's a good plus.
- 2:24Yep, there's some famous in there.
- 2:25So all right, Dylan, here's what I wanted to start out with.
- 2:28Our last episode, which was, I think it was about a month ago,
- 2:33part of the episode was towards the end where I showed a few
- 2:39different Tom Brady rookie cards that I had in Beckett slabs and
- 2:44I crossed them over to PSA. And you know, anyone who checked
- 2:47that out, there was a pretty sizable grade drop in a few of
- 2:51them. You know, 1 was like a 8.5 down
- 2:54to A5, an 8 to a six, and another one was in I think an
- 2:578.5 down to an, you know, down to AA52.
- 3:00So we're talking like three grade drops.
- 3:02But if you watch the episode, what I explained in that is the
- 3:07reason I did that wasn't for any type of like value thing, money,
- 3:12money thing. It was AI was doing the full
- 3:14collection of the 44 Brady rookies and I wanted them all in
- 3:17PSA holders 'cause I had like 40 or 38 of them in PSA.
- 3:21So the last five or 6 I had in Beckett, I figured I'll just
- 3:24cross them over and I don't really care about the grade with
- 3:26this collection that I'm building inside my collection.
- 3:29So, you know, and then I got a comment which I want to respond
- 3:32to from Mozzie 22. I like, I like his, I like his
- 3:37fire in this comedy. He goes, why in God's name would
- 3:40you cross those over? Hate to think how much money you
- 3:43just lost. PSA sucks, always have.
- 3:46If you think APSA 5 is going to sell down the road for what a
- 3:50Beckett 8.5 does, then you're smoking the good stuff.
- 3:55Good. Hey, I'm fine with those
- 3:57comments, you know, keep them, keep them coming.
- 3:58Totally. It wasn't like me or anything.
- 4:01Yeah. So, no, it's it's funny.
- 4:04So, but the point the reason he said that is because also in
- 4:07that video, I I did say I think down the road, you know, the
- 4:12three grade difference between a Beckett this type of car.
- 4:15I'm not saying all cards, but in these particular type of card
- 4:17Brady rookies from 2000, I don't think they'll be a really a big
- 4:22gap because a lot of the people that collect these cards don't
- 4:25care really about the number as much, you know, as some other
- 4:29types of cards in the hobby or types of collections.
- 4:33But and a lot of them are are lower numbered anyway, like this
- 4:37one's leaf limited numbered to 350.
- 4:40This was one that dropped from an 8.5 and a Beckett to A5 with
- 4:43PSA. And I, I did a little research
- 4:47and not only in the future, but even right now, PSA 5 is like
- 4:53not equal with a Beckett 8.5 in this card.
- 4:57But we're talking like, I think a Beckett was like 8.5 was
- 5:00around. This is one of his bigger ones,
- 5:02maybe 4 grand and APSA 5 was still like, I think close to
- 5:0625103 grand. So, you know, there's there's
- 5:10not a really a huge, I mean that's a decent amount of money,
- 5:12but when you're looking at percentages, it's not they're
- 5:16not that far off. Even this tech card like this,
- 5:18the EX in a 5 is like $1000 and in a Beckett 8.5, it was like
- 5:271800, you know what I mean? So yeah, they're not equal, but
- 5:31they're real. There's not not a huge gap there
- 5:33that you would see with like other cards in the hobby based
- 5:35on grades. And so if you even if you did
- 5:39care about money, there's, it's really not of as a big of a gap
- 5:42as you would think. And I think a lot of that has to
- 5:44do with it being PSA versus Beckett.
- 5:47But again, that was not even factored in for me.
- 5:49It was just more of like, hey, getting the uniformity.
- 5:52I don't collect all my cards in this manner, but I did want to
- 5:55touch on that because Mozzie, feel free to leave another
- 5:57comment, let me know what you find.
- 5:59But at least in the research I did, there's not a huge gap in
- 6:03three great differences between Beckett and PSA in these type of
- 6:06cards. So anyway, say another.
- 6:08One let me, let me, let me, let me say something real fast about
- 6:11it. No, go for it.
- 6:13You know, what if you just cracked them out and sold them
- 6:16raw? I'm curious if the grade if what
- 6:19the price is on that level because that's a whole thing
- 6:23too, right? Like you have these lower graded
- 6:25PSA cards, you're literally better off snapping them out and
- 6:29selling them raw when they're the low numbered stuff.
- 6:32And I think I just think the hobbies just getting a lot quote
- 6:36UN quote smarter, you know, when you're getting to these rare
- 6:40cards, these numbered cards, let's we're really starting,
- 6:44especially with that teapot video, we're really starting to
- 6:46see that the value should be in the card.
- 6:49It shouldn't be in anything else.
- 6:50It really shouldn't be in the number on the slab.
- 6:53And when you're talking about an 8, what is the value versus A5?
- 6:58The card is the same card. It looks the same.
- 7:00And PSA to me. All this does is prove to me
- 7:06that what I've been saying that to toot my own horn this whole
- 7:09time is PSA's cards are worth more because they grade tougher
- 7:13and they always have. And I get so much blowback for
- 7:17that. Like I back 25 years ago buying
- 7:21SGC cards, trying to transfer those to PSA was nearly
- 7:25impossible. People tried because you just
- 7:28PSA has always been stricter and they haven't got less strict,
- 7:32they've just gotten more strict. So to me a superior card is
- 7:35always, not always, but 85% of time going to be in a PSA slab.
- 7:41Not because they suck at grading, not because PSA sucks,
- 7:46not because of anything other than the fact that their
- 7:49criteria, However, their grading is stricter.
- 7:52So when you see APSA 8, that probably equates to an an SGC 9
- 7:58or a BVAB GS9 and so forth. Especially on the modern stuff
- 8:03and vintage, there's always been a gap.
- 8:05For 30 years there's been a one point gap across the board 99%
- 8:11of the time. So you know.
- 8:13And to your point, you know, if I was primarily doing this to
- 8:17like maximize money and a card like this, which looks really
- 8:21great, but is APSA 5, you could crack this out and try to sell
- 8:26it raw at a show because it looks really good.
- 8:29The the characteristics which led it to be APSA five are
- 8:32mostly in like magnification, right?
- 8:34Like you have to really get on the microscope.
- 8:37Oh, there's a little a little crease here, whatever that you
- 8:39can't really see. So it has the eye appeal, which
- 8:41is what I was going after. And you know, an 8.5 and a
- 8:46Becket for this, the smarter collectors that are going to buy
- 8:49these cards, they know that that the Beckett 8.5 is pretty much
- 8:54in this specific type of card, 90s, early 2000s, they just tend
- 8:59to be PSA fives. You know that the PSA will find
- 9:01whatever they need to find to make.
- 9:03So I think that's just going to be factored in the future.
- 9:06Like, you know, if you're going to try to sell a Beckett 8.5,
- 9:09the person who's going to try to buy that, if they're going to
- 9:11try to flip it or anything like that, they're going to look at
- 9:13that as all right, what is APSA 5 going to do?
- 9:16What is APSA 6 going to do? Because if they did cross it
- 9:19over, that's what they're going to be now holding.
- 9:20So that's why I think in the future of Beckett graded card
- 9:24like that is going to be pretty close to what the equivalent in
- 9:27PSA would would sell for. Because you know, at the end of
- 9:30the day, if if you're just collecting it, you're collecting
- 9:33it. But if you're trying to make
- 9:34money, then you're always going to kind of approach it and say
- 9:37like, I don't care what if not PSA, but what would it be in
- 9:40APSA? Probably.
- 9:41And then they're going to price it at that.
- 9:43That's I think that's where things are going to head,
- 9:45whether you like that or not. I don't you know, it doesn't
- 9:46really affect me too much these days.
- 9:48But when I did this project, what I did what I was just kind
- 9:52of getting impatient. I was like, I got them all.
- 9:54But like I I could sell these Beckett last five or six Beckett
- 9:57ones and yeah, I get a little more money, but I'm not the most
- 10:00patient guy. So I was like, you know what,
- 10:02I'm not doing this till I'm not a dealer.
- 10:04So what I'm going to do is I'm just going to shoot all these
- 10:06beckets into PSAI. Know I'll lose grade numbers as
- 10:10far as on the grade, but I don't care.
- 10:12I want to get this thing finished.
- 10:13So that was my motivation. It wasn't like I'm a dealer.
- 10:15I'm trying to maximize every dollar.
- 10:17Just to clarify to Mozzie and anyone else who watched that,
- 10:20that yeah, I'm not the smartest guy, but I'm also not a complete
- 10:23idiot. Like if I was trying to make
- 10:24money, I would not have done that, OK.
- 10:26No, let me, let me clarify something.
- 10:28If there's there's two guys in this hobby that I've watched,
- 10:32you know, religiously for the last four years and Adam is a
- 10:36guy who I could hand him $20,000 and say, hey, pick me out some
- 10:41cards that fit my collection to AT and also have the most
- 10:46potential in the future. Your brain works in mysterious
- 10:49ways. You hit the nail on the head 90%
- 10:52of the time. Like you are every card you end
- 10:55up buying, no matter what these moves you make, they just, they
- 10:58blow my mind. Here I am.
- 10:59I just accumulate making my collections, you know, not
- 11:03trying to sell for profit or anything, and you're over here
- 11:06like making these magical moves without even the intention of
- 11:10like trying to profit from them. But it just happens.
- 11:13And I think your brain, you're selling yourself short.
- 11:15I think you're totally accurate on those statements.
- 11:18I know there's going to be guys, Beckett, guys that are like, you
- 11:22know, hounding you for it. You know what?
- 11:24I also wanted to, you know, touch and base on this whole,
- 11:27like I find it really funny that when you have a card in a slab,
- 11:34especially the Becketts, but you're looking through all this
- 11:36plastic, right? We're so worried about this
- 11:38little nick on, on the corner, like a little white showing or a
- 11:42little scratch on the card. And then you look at the, the
- 11:45plastic itself and there's scratches on the plastic and
- 11:49there's some and in the Becketts, they're inside 2
- 11:51pieces of plastic and they're all cloudy.
- 11:54And it blows my mind that that doesn't bother us.
- 11:59But you still see the scratches on the plastic when you're
- 12:02looking at the card. So it's basically on the card
- 12:04you're looking at. I, I, our collectors brains are
- 12:07all messed up because it's honestly it's, it's hilarious.
- 12:12We look at these cards and not only do we put them in these
- 12:15slabs that have scratches, then we put a sleeve over top of
- 12:18those and those get like scratched up.
- 12:21But then we look at the card and we see this little tiny little
- 12:24thing and we're like, oh, oh man.
- 12:27But then you just disregard the whole scratch on the case.
- 12:30You know, it's really weird to me.
- 12:31I, I mean, I'm in that camp. It's it's just a strange concept
- 12:35to me. It is strange and that's I've
- 12:37never actually heard it put that way.
- 12:38That is, that is so funny when now that you think about it that
- 12:41way. Yep.
- 12:43And by the way, I don't want to offend any I I collect plenty of
- 12:46Beckett graded cards here, but I did want to bring another thing
- 12:49up regarding Beckett. This is an awesome card I got in
- 12:52the last year or so. It's a Larry Bird 2009 Dream
- 12:58Team game threads. The cool thing about this card
- 13:01is that is game used 1992 Dream Team game used material from
- 13:07Larry Bird. So such an awesome card.
- 13:10Again, not a really expensive card either.
- 13:12Just one of those cool cards that kind of fell through the
- 13:14cracks of time in the hobby and I had to get this one.
- 13:19But yeah, it's in Beckett. But here's what I wanted to say.
- 13:22I heard an interview, as you know I've mentioned many times
- 13:25one of the things I I cannot stand over and over is the and
- 13:28you just reference it the inner sleeve in these Beckett Beckett
- 13:32slab, right? Totally unnecessary if the cards
- 13:35already protected it's just and it takes away from the look of
- 13:39the card. You said a cloudy like this card
- 13:41right here love it. It's got a cloudy sleeve over
- 13:44it. It's hard to tell here, but in
- 13:45person it just takes away from the card looking at it and I
- 13:49heard I'm trying to remember who it was.
- 13:52Oh OK, Neo it was Neo cards and comics.
- 13:54He had the new, I'm going to call him leader.
- 13:57I don't know what his title is, but the leader of Beckett.
- 13:59He used to work at collectors or still does because they bought
- 14:02Beckett. But anyway, they put him in
- 14:04charge. And I really enjoyed the
- 14:06interview. I, I thought the, I forget his
- 14:08name, but whoever's running Beckett now seemed like a really
- 14:11nice and sharp guy and I loved a lot what he had to say.
- 14:15But one thing drove me nuts. He goes Neo asked him about the
- 14:20inner sleeve, right? And he and he, I forget how he
- 14:22said it, but basically getting getting his opinion on it.
- 14:25Like are you going to make any changes like the inner sleeve or
- 14:27anything? A lot of collectors don't like
- 14:29that. And the guy said I don't like it
- 14:32either. I hate the I don't like the
- 14:34inner sleeve. He goes, but I'm not going to
- 14:35change it. I was just like.
- 14:39Why? Why?
- 14:41That's what drives me nuts about these companies in the hobby is
- 14:45again, he's admitting it's he doesn't like it, he's running
- 14:48the company. Why aren't you going to change
- 14:50it? That?
- 14:50And that's the problem with Beckett is they never change
- 14:52anything. And they wonder why PSA has 90
- 14:57plus percent of the market. It's because Beckett is stuck in
- 15:00their ways for whatever reason, no matter who's running it.
- 15:03They say they're going to make changes or whatever, but like
- 15:05something as easy as getting rid of this inner inner sleeve or
- 15:09how about this, this is crazy, right?
- 15:11Put a check box on the submission form.
- 15:13Do you want the inner sleeve? Yes or no, and if you don't want
- 15:15it, you don't have to have it. I mean, I don't know, does that
- 15:18seem crazy? I think something as as little
- 15:20as that could make a big difference in at least I would.
- 15:25I would like that if I would be more likely to buy a Beckett
- 15:28graded card without an inner sleeve.
- 15:30I know that dude. You try scanning those things or
- 15:33taking photos of those stupid slabs and there's all kinds of
- 15:38weird stuff going on cuz that inner sleeve.
- 15:41I've heard people say that they like the inner sleeve and I just
- 15:45I want to throw my phone across the room and and just start
- 15:48snapping all my cards. I get it makes me so mad.
- 15:52How could you like the inner sleeve?
- 15:55It protects it. We're already in plastic.
- 15:58These cards are protected. This thing is.
- 16:00Solid man. The card's fine without the
- 16:02sleeve. This is this is a well made
- 16:04slab. Dude it makes me so freaking
- 16:07mad. That inner sleeve is the dumbest
- 16:08thing that ever happened to this hobby.
- 16:10I don't under and they used like back in the day.
- 16:13They used like cloudy ones too, like worst, just insanity.
- 16:18Absolutely. I have like I have a little
- 16:20stack of Beckett slabs that I'm literally I'm just I'm going to
- 16:25crack them all at one's a pop one.
- 16:26I'm still cracking the thing out because the card is looks
- 16:29absolutely stupid inside that thing.
- 16:32It looks like it's WAVY because that dumb thing, yeah.
- 16:36And you know, if you're, if you're a dealer or you're
- 16:38someone who's not really building a collection, you don't
- 16:41care about the inner sleeve, right, 'cause you're not keeping
- 16:43the card, you're just, you're buying and selling.
- 16:45And, but if, if you're an actual collector who wants to be able
- 16:48to look at your cards and like the way they look, these are the
- 16:51things that we care about as collectors.
- 16:53And the fact that you hear the, a guy who's running the company
- 16:56who you would think, well has the ability to make changes, but
- 17:00he does not like it, but he's not going to change it.
- 17:02And he did. I was just like, what's the
- 17:04point of having the job then I would just quit.
- 17:06If I literally wanted to make a change and I was running the
- 17:09company, I couldn't do it. I'm just finding another job at
- 17:11some point cuz it's like, what's the point, you know?
- 17:14Blows my mind. Let me let me talk a little more
- 17:15crap on Beckett holders. Everyone's like they're like
- 17:19bulletproof. They're wrong.
- 17:20Have you ever dropped one of those?
- 17:22Although I have had more Beckett slabs chip off the corners in my
- 17:27lifetime, in any other companies on earth come in the mail, Some
- 17:32of them are chipped off. They they may be thick, they may
- 17:35be, you know, feel big. But those things shatter like
- 17:40glass. This one's got a chip right on
- 17:42the bottom. There we go.
- 17:43I mean, everyone's always. I'm like, no, they're the worst
- 17:46slabs ever made. I hate them.
- 17:49I mean God don't get me started. This is like getting into a rant
- 17:53video already. That's all right hey, you know
- 17:55what one thing we've always done Dylan on these over the years we
- 17:57share our opinions you know and some sometimes they're people
- 18:01don't like that's OK it's all in good fun though it's we're just
- 18:03on here sharing our honest opinions but.
- 18:07There I got one right here. I just I have because this is in
- 18:12my to be cracked out pile and not to be cracked out to be
- 18:16resenting, but I'll put it on my slabs.
- 18:18Look at this thing's all shattered on the side.
- 18:21It came this way years ago and I'm just like, you know, this is
- 18:26a joke and everyone's like they're bulletproof.
- 18:28These things, you barely drop them.
- 18:30Boom. That's that's why I actually
- 18:32love. I don't know if you felt the new
- 18:34PSA slabs, the plastic they're using.
- 18:38People are whining about them. Man, those things are like
- 18:40rubber. You could drop them from space
- 18:42and they'll just bounce. I know people are like, oh, you
- 18:45can crack them out. You can crack any of these out
- 18:47with your hands if you really want to get into it.
- 18:50If you're doing that, then you got other issues.
- 18:53I'm not trying to crack my cards out with my hands.
- 18:55I don't care if they pop out if you're going like this.
- 18:59And but those new slabs, the rubbery gel they're using, they
- 19:03feel good and they're like, you can crack them on the ground.
- 19:07They're not going to shatter. So all you PSA haters, I'm not a
- 19:11huge PSA fan. I don't care.
- 19:13I just I, I just think they look really good and they and they
- 19:17the plastic to me is like that's bulletproof compared to these
- 19:21freaking tanks that shatter like glass.
- 19:23There's my I'm done ranting for the day.
- 19:25Well, no. We're probably not, but that's
- 19:27all right. You know, at least on on that
- 19:28subject. Do you want to?
- 19:31I have a couple more things I want to get your opinions out
- 19:33and touch on, but I figured do you have anything you want to?
- 19:36Yeah, yeah, to talk about first. Yeah, let me ask you a a quick
- 19:40question, give you a little jab. Why have you betrayed YouTube
- 19:45for Instagram? OK, well, it's not like I do
- 19:49that much on Instagram anymore either.
- 19:51I kind of just re share a story here and there.
- 19:53But yeah, it's it's a good question.
- 19:56You know, I haven't and I wish I had a better answer.
- 20:00I really don't though, you know, it's.
- 20:03And I made the joke on my last video when I voted for the
- 20:06YouTube Hall of Fame that once you get in the Hall of Fame, you
- 20:08stop making videos. And again, I that had nothing to
- 20:10do with it at all because that would be crazy to be like, I'm
- 20:14going to make three years of video.
- 20:15So I get in the YouTube Hall of Fame and then I can stop like,
- 20:18you know, but it's more of just, you know, as you know, I, my
- 20:24life changed a lot in the last year, you know, I moved cross
- 20:28country and just all my routines changed all that stuff.
- 20:34And with that, it's just I've had, I don't know, it's just
- 20:36been like a mental block or whatever where I still watch all
- 20:38your videos and all my friends videos.
- 20:41Like I still watch YouTube. I'm like a lurker now in many
- 20:44cases, but I, I don't know, I just have had this block where
- 20:47it's like I think about I can make a video about that or I
- 20:50would love to talk to this person, but I guess I'm a little
- 20:54busier. But you can't really use that as
- 20:55a full excuse because it's not, you know, you can always squeeze
- 20:57in a video here and there. I don't really have a good
- 21:00answer other than the fact that like I just, I don't know, I
- 21:04just have not been able to pull the trigger on some of these
- 21:06videos. And, and I think it will go in
- 21:09waves. Like, you know, there'll be a
- 21:11time where I start doing it again.
- 21:12I know more than just once every like once a month with you.
- 21:16And then I don't know how often I'll do the solo videos, but I
- 21:20definitely think I'll go in more in waves with with with this
- 21:23thing. But just over the last 5-6
- 21:25months I have, I just had to get a lot going on, but so does
- 21:29everyone else. So that's not really a good
- 21:31excuse. I don't know.
- 21:32I don't really have a good reason to be honest with you.
- 21:35Fair enough. Fair.
- 21:36Enough. It's not that I don't want to,
- 21:37it's just that I just, I don't know, I get this like weird
- 21:41block or something. Maybe I've been a little
- 21:42depressed. I don't know.
- 21:43Maybe, you know, I've been fighting some, you know,
- 21:46fighting some seasonal depression back here in
- 21:49Massachusetts, trying to fight that off.
- 21:51And yeah, I wish I had a better answer for you, but I don't
- 21:55know. I really don't.
- 21:56The Dracula syndrome is taking over your body.
- 22:00No sunlight, all darkness. Yeah, OK.
- 22:04That might because, OK, I used to make a lot of my videos when
- 22:08I was in Arizona, I would make him after my kids went to bed,
- 22:11you know, and that would be sometimes, you know, seven, 8:00
- 22:14at night. And a lot of times, I don't know
- 22:16if it was because it's warmer or there's maybe it's light out
- 22:21longer out there where I have more motivation.
- 22:24But like now back here, it gets dark at 5:00 and my kids go to
- 22:28bed and it's like my wife and I are just exhausted.
- 22:31And I would like to make a video, but I'm like, man, I
- 22:33don't feel like going down the basement and setting it up.
- 22:35And so it, a lot of it is just like, it just doesn't feel as
- 22:39easy as it used to feel. And that's sometimes that's all
- 22:43it takes for something like this is like just a little, it's a
- 22:46little less easy to do. So you just don't do it, you
- 22:49know. So I'm like, I'll just, I'll
- 22:50just watch other people's videos because there's so many that
- 22:53I've, I've like had to say, I'll maybe make a video on this.
- 22:55And then I watch a video and then like the person will say
- 22:58what I was gonna say. I'm like, alright, then I'm
- 23:00good. I don't need to make a video on
- 23:01that. So there's just so much content
- 23:03to watch now that part of me is like, maybe I don't even need to
- 23:07make a video on these things, you know?
- 23:09Oh, don't get me started with like, oh man, quick, quick rant.
- 23:14Good, good answers, Adam And and I wasn't trying to like poke you
- 23:17or make fun of you. I just throwing, you know,
- 23:20there's like a divide between, I don't know if it's a divide, but
- 23:23there's Instagram guys and there's YouTube guys.
- 23:25I'm not a I'm not a Instagram guy.
- 23:27I have an Instagram account that I did for my yard projects and
- 23:32stuff over the years, but I just don't have.
- 23:35I'm not never, I'm not going to say never, but I'll probably
- 23:38never be a car guy on there. I probably, if you looked at my
- 23:42weekly history, I'm like probably 30 minutes on Instagram
- 23:45a week and I don't even like to like anybody's stuff.
- 23:49I will once in a while and once in a while I'll leave a comment,
- 23:53but I really don't. I don't want to start that train
- 23:56and then have two balls on the court that I have to control.
- 24:00So for me it's like YouTube or or that's it.
- 24:04I'm done with the hobby as far as like being on in public with
- 24:07it. I I just I can't spend that much
- 24:10time on things like that. Oh quick rant.
- 24:15Oh, hold on. I gotta turn this up.
- 24:16What's going on here? But.
- 24:17While you're doing that, yeah, honestly, I I makes a few I
- 24:21share stories, you know, for the for clubhouse sports card
- 24:23clubhouse episodes on it will take me like less than a minute
- 24:27to to put it out there. But to your point, I I probably
- 24:30spend less than 30 minutes a week on Instagram too.
- 24:32For the most part. It's so quick and easy.
- 24:35I'm not doing lives on there. I'm not producing any content on
- 24:39Instagram. Whereas making a video on
- 24:41YouTube, for me at least it would, it definitely requires
- 24:43more work and time. So it's just more just laziness
- 24:46to be honest. I hear you.
- 24:48Yeah, for sure. Oh, oh, where I was going with
- 24:51that, that that that video that was making its rounds hobbies
- 24:56insane on the YouTube side. And there's there was that video
- 25:00of the, the dealer of, you know, quote UN quote being a jerk to
- 25:04the guy. I don't know if you noticed any
- 25:06of those. It went on like 7 different
- 25:09people were talking about it. I didn't even think the guy was
- 25:11a jerk. I was like I don't know, I just
- 25:13think there's more than more than meets the eye to that
- 25:18story. I didn't the whole comps thing
- 25:21every time I heard I did this again, so I hear you.
- 25:24Like when 1 little thing gets touched on YouTube, every single
- 25:28channel has to hit it up. I'm fine with it.
- 25:30I just don't need to be the guy that hits it up every time, so.
- 25:33Yeah, and honestly, at this point, I feel like a lot of
- 25:37people have better takes than me and are more knowledgeable on on
- 25:40news and stuff than I am. So I'm like, I'll just be in the
- 25:44background on these things. Like I don't need to give my
- 25:46opinion. We're we're honestly, I'm not
- 25:48even well researched on a lot of this stuff.
- 25:50So like I'll just make a fool out of myself if I come out and
- 25:52talk about a lot of the things. I'm just like, I just watch
- 25:54other people's videos and and then someday, I don't know,
- 25:57maybe I'll, I like showing my collection.
- 26:00But then again, it's like, I don't know, how do I do it?
- 26:02Do I? You can't see cards like this,
- 26:04and then I have to set up a whole thing.
- 26:06Oh, yeah, I don't know, man. I don't know.
- 26:08Hey. We all miss.
- 26:09We all miss the three and three, you know, and it's been been
- 26:12quite some time. But yeah, I hear you.
- 26:14I hear you, Adam. There's no.
- 26:15It was a great way to meet people too, network.
- 26:18And you know what, that's probably a part of it too, is I
- 26:20feel like I've made a lot of cool friends that I'm still in
- 26:23touch with through, you know, text messages or whatever.
- 26:26Or now I watch their videos all the time where if I went to a
- 26:30card show like the West Coast card show, like you did, I would
- 26:33be able to meet up with 25 different guys that I, that I
- 26:37know and consider to be friends, even if I've never met him
- 26:39before. So I feel like a lot of what I
- 26:41did with three and three and everything, and a lot of it was
- 26:43for me just to like, it was a fun way to meet someone, you
- 26:46know, new. So not that I wouldn't like to
- 26:49keep doing it, but it it it's decent amount of work to like
- 26:52line up, line up two schedules and can you do Oh, it's.
- 26:56Insane, insane. And how many friends?
- 26:59How many friends do you need? Like there's comes a point on
- 27:02YouTube where it's like now I want to be friends with
- 27:06everybody, but you just can't. I can't have everybody.
- 27:09I can't text everyone. I can't be close to everyone.
- 27:12It's insane. I have my wife would divorce me.
- 27:14So you have you form these little groups and there's
- 27:17nothing wrong with that because that's how it's supposed to be.
- 27:19People come on these. Guys are like to get to know
- 27:21better that I just haven't had a chance.
- 27:23But then it's like, like I could do that, but then I don't even
- 27:26have the time to keep in touch with a lot of the, the guys I've
- 27:29already known for 3-4 years on here.
- 27:31I feel bad. There's some, I, I see someone
- 27:33make a video, I go, man, I, I haven't reached out to that
- 27:35person in a while. I feel bad, you know, I watch
- 27:37their videos. But yeah.
- 27:40So anyway, it's, it's a, it's a good problem to have.
- 27:42You know, I feel lucky that I discovered this world and I've
- 27:46gotten a lot out of it. And you know, and we'll do I'll
- 27:48keep, I'll keep I'm always going to be involved with it somehow,
- 27:51whether I'm still watching or commenting.
- 27:53And with Sports Card clubhouse putting out more overtime, I
- 27:57think. But you know, we'll see.
- 28:00The next thing I wanted to bring up to you is, OK, this is a good
- 28:04time. So I I mentioned I'll mention in
- 28:06here, I recently sold a card. It was the 1994 Mickey Mantle
- 28:13Ken Griffey Junior autograph card.
- 28:16Very, very, I would say it's a famous card in the hobby, you
- 28:19know, well known, which is probably why it sold for what it
- 28:22did, which I was very surprised at.
- 28:25But I just last week it ended and now this was the one where
- 28:30it just had the Mickey Mantle auto.
- 28:32So the ones that have the dual auto, the Griffey and the
- 28:34Mantle, those are obviously really expensive cards.
- 28:37But this one, you know, I'm a Mickey Mantle collector.
- 28:39I'm not a Ken Griffey junior collector.
- 28:40So when I bought that card a few years back, I said I just want
- 28:44to go with the one that was autographed by mantle only.
- 28:47I forget what it was. I think it was like 500 of
- 28:49mantle, 500 of Griffey only and then 500 of them both that
- 28:53autographed it. I, I'm pretty sure.
- 28:55So I had the one in, you know, for a long time it was like
- 28:59between A2 to $3000 card, which expensive card.
- 29:04And then I'm, I recently caught wind that like I, I forget what
- 29:09I saw. I saw something of like a sale
- 29:11on the, the Griffey only or something like that where I was
- 29:14like, really? And then I did a little more
- 29:16research cuz like, you know, there's been a conversation
- 29:18about card values on YouTube recently.
- 29:21And I am also in the camp of they do matter to me in certain
- 29:25ways. But when I buy a card, I don't
- 29:28check the price and I don't really monitor what it's worth.
- 29:31Cuz when I usually buy something like I bought this card, I
- 29:33didn't buy it to sell right away or anything like that.
- 29:36Or even, you know, if you would ask me, are you going to sell
- 29:39this card in three years? I probably would have said no at
- 29:40the time when I bought it, but it apparently had climbed.
- 29:46I think it, it went up about 5, four to five times of what I
- 29:50bought it for a few years back. So it ended up selling.
- 29:53It was a Beckett 8.5 grade on the card with a nine auto and it
- 29:59sold for about $13,000. Insane.
- 30:03So, I mean, I was very surprised at that.
- 30:06I know. And then you texted me.
- 30:07You said, hey, at the West Coast Card show, I saw a few of those
- 30:11in these showcases and they were going, they were like listed at,
- 30:13what, 15,000? Yeah.
- 30:15Wow. So I'm thinking, holy moly.
- 30:18And so my question to you is, in a few years here, why do you
- 30:22think? And I honestly, I think, I think
- 30:24it's probably been in the last year that it's climbed.
- 30:27I think he, I didn't hadn't been checking it, but I think even as
- 30:30far as like a year or two ago, it was still right in that price
- 30:33range of like 3000 dollar $4000 card, something like that.
- 30:36So just pretty recently this card has 4X Why?
- 30:41Why do you think, what do you think is leading to this?
- 30:44Why did that card go up so much? OK, well let's tie it all the
- 30:47way back to remember. Remember when everything came
- 30:50crashing down after the after the pandemic bubble thing and
- 30:55everybody thought the hobby was doomed and over and we came on
- 30:58and we're like, no, we're going to see another huge boom just
- 31:03like that and it's even going to pass that one up?
- 31:06Well, I think we're seeing it right now and we're seeing it in
- 31:10more iconic cards. We're seeing it in more scarce
- 31:14cards. And it's not like I guess I will
- 31:20use the term smarter. You know?
- 31:22I've never been a base card type of guy.
- 31:25Like I don't understand why Mike Trout's base cards worth more
- 31:29than 200. I blows my absolute brain that
- 31:33any base Otani card is worth more than $50.00 in any grade
- 31:38because there's just millions of them.
- 31:42So I think cards like that with all the collector base that has
- 31:47grown exponentially over the last five years has just gone
- 31:51like through the moon as far as the number of people collecting
- 31:55cards and or flipping cards all the same to me, ever whoever's
- 32:00in the hobby that has grown. And so those guys see those cars
- 32:04that they didn't even know existed, cards like that where
- 32:07there's only 500 of them. And you know how many of those
- 32:11got destroyed? So there's probably only like
- 32:13350 maybe that survived during that time.
- 32:17And I think, you know, you got the Griffey trains, like off the
- 32:21tracks right now. Mantle's not off the tracks.
- 32:24The the, the vintage guys seem to be right in a good sweet spot
- 32:28where they're just slowly climbing, but they have Griffey
- 32:32on there with mantle. I think cards like that, they're
- 32:35just those, there's those, those grail cards that guys that are
- 32:39in the hobby now, the new guys coming in and even the older
- 32:42guys, they didn't even know those cards existed.
- 32:44And they find out that they exist and they just start, they
- 32:48take on a a world of their own and, and there's so many cards
- 32:52like that that that's happened to.
- 32:54And I think it's, I mean, I, I'm on the fence of the I think
- 32:58still think we're in the beginning stages of this, or I'd
- 33:01say mid. I I think we're in like the 5th
- 33:02inning, maybe 6th inning now of the hobby growing, whether Sir.
- 33:09And I think during that is just going to bring up certain cards
- 33:11like that. Certain cards for no reason
- 33:14whatsoever are just going to just start skyrocketing.
- 33:18They just they hit this little magical a rainbow and people
- 33:23start hearing about them and seeing them more and then boom,
- 33:26next thing you know, those are all hot and on fire there.
- 33:29There's really no other explanation to it.
- 33:32Well, let me let. Me ask you that OK, so I was
- 33:34thinking about this. I was thinking yeah, I was very
- 33:36happy that that card sold for what it did.
- 33:38I mean, the reason I sold that card is I was going through my
- 33:41collection. There was some cards I wanted to
- 33:42get out. And maybe on the next episode
- 33:44when I get it in hand, I'll show, well, at least one of the
- 33:48cards that I bought with the money from that sale of the
- 33:51$13,000 Mantle Griffey card sale, but I don't have it in
- 33:55hand yet. But I was going through my
- 33:57collection trying to find, all right, what cards could I sell
- 34:00here where I can fund this card and a couple others that I want
- 34:04to get. And this card struck my eye
- 34:07because I was thinking, you know, this is a cool card.
- 34:10I bought it because I was, I always knew about it and I
- 34:12always, I guess wanted it. But then I looked at it and I
- 34:14thought, you know, I'm not a Griffey collector.
- 34:16It's kind of a, it's a combo card with Griffey.
- 34:18I like Griffey, you know, I have some of his cards, but and then
- 34:22I was thinking, I already have a Mickey Mantle.
- 34:23I have a couple different Mickey Mantle pack pulled autos.
- 34:26I have like the score ones from 91 or 91 I think and 9292 I
- 34:33actually kind of like oh. Yeah, I think there's a there's
- 34:35a 91 too, but the score franchise, yeah, let.
- 34:38Me show you this I'll show you this one next, but the I have
- 34:40the 90 ones where they made like a series of seven cards and
- 34:44different ones like the Triple Crown one where it's just mantle
- 34:47on there with the autograph. I actually kind of like those
- 34:49cards better and they're way less expensive and they came out
- 34:52earlier. So I'm thinking like, I'll keep
- 34:54those because I, I really like those best.
- 34:56But this mantle Griffey 1 is worth like 5X of what the other
- 35:00mantle auto pack pulled autos are worth.
- 35:03And so I'm like, well, maybe I'll sell this one.
- 35:05And it's not like I won't have any left.
- 35:07I still got some from 91 and 92. But I was thinking like, who,
- 35:12who do you? I was trying to figure out, I'll
- 35:13never know probably. But it's like who bought that
- 35:15card? Who bought, who paid 13,000 for
- 35:17that card? And I came to two conclusions.
- 35:19It's I don't think it was like a collector.
- 35:21I don't think someone who's like would want to have that card for
- 35:24their long term collection. I think they probably know the
- 35:27price range of that, of where it's been and they maybe
- 35:30wouldn't pull the trigger at 13,000 on that card.
- 35:32But I think it was either meant for a repack.
- 35:35I think it might be a Chase card and a repack.
- 35:38And those repacking companies, you know, they'll just pay
- 35:40whatever because they're going to just they'll mark up the
- 35:43repack that it's in and they'll end up making money either way,
- 35:46whether they buy it for 13,000 or 3000.
- 35:49So it's probably going to be a Chase card and a repack or it
- 35:53might be someone, some dealer who's looked at it and go, I
- 35:56could crack that out, get Griffey to sign it.
- 36:00And then it would probably be worth, I don't know, 30, forty,
- 36:03$50,000 because it's the, it's now the dual auto.
- 36:07Even though like, I don't know, there's probably no way to know
- 36:10if it was a Griffey playing day's auto versus if you signed
- 36:13it now, maybe, but you could probably pull that off.
- 36:16You could crack it out, get it signed by Griffey at a show and
- 36:20then regrade it with Beckett or PSA and then now it's the and no
- 36:25one will ever know that it wasn't the pack pulled double
- 36:27auto. I would feel yeah like I God, OK
- 36:31keep going. I just that.
- 36:33That that was it. I was thinking it's probably
- 36:35either the dealer trying to do something like that or it's
- 36:38going to be a repacker. But what do you think?
- 36:40Who do you, if you could like, come up with in your head who
- 36:43bought that card at that price? Who do you think it was?
- 36:45What? Type of I think you I think you
- 36:47probably nailed it. That wasn't in my brain, but I
- 36:49think a repacker could have definitely scarfed that thing
- 36:52up. One thing I one thing to since
- 36:56you brought up the autograph and having that card autographed and
- 36:58it going up in value, honestly, nothing makes me well, I don't
- 37:03want to say that too loudly. I hate that you can send a card
- 37:10in to someone and get it autographed and all of a sudden
- 37:14it's worth like 10 times more. I don't understand that.
- 37:19In fact a card like that if if that got autographed I to me it
- 37:23ruins the card. I want it to be its true form as
- 37:26it came out of the pack. That's why I love pack pulled
- 37:30autographs. I don't like cards that get
- 37:33autographed later when a guy's still alive and you can send a
- 37:37card to get autographed and all of a sudden it's worth 10 times
- 37:40the price. It's just to me, it's just what
- 37:44it's like a game. I don't want to play that game.
- 37:46Now I get it. You're have all the right to and
- 37:49some people like those cards to be autographed and stuff.
- 37:52But I don't understand that if somebody's alive and you can
- 37:56send a card and you get it autographed, all of a sudden
- 37:58it's worth a lot more. I, I, my brain can't comprehend
- 38:03that I don't care about it. I don't like it.
- 38:07It's like part of the hobby that just kind of bothers me.
- 38:11I know there's guys out there, I don't want to call anyone out,
- 38:15but I know guys out there literally they that's their game
- 38:18is they, they get their cards autographed and then they go get
- 38:21them dual graded and it becomes worth more money.
- 38:25I never it never. It never works for my brain.
- 38:28The TTM thing, I get super fun, exciting and the cards, the guys
- 38:34doing TTMS, those cards aren't worth it really much more when
- 38:38they're autographed. But the ones that like getting a
- 38:41card signed by Sandy Kofax, he's still alive and guys are sending
- 38:44their rookie cards in in in droves to get them autographs
- 38:48and all of a sudden they're worth more.
- 38:49I don't want an autographed Sandy Kofax rookie card simply
- 38:54for the fact because he's still alive and some guy probably just
- 38:56got autographed yesterday. It bothers the heck out of me if
- 39:01the guy's hasn't, if the guy's been alive in the last 10 years,
- 39:05I don't want to pay for his autograph on a on a card now
- 39:08unless it's a pack pulled autograph.
- 39:10Whereas like guys that have passed away before, you know,
- 39:13this whole dual autograph thing or like the dual grading
- 39:17autograph thing took off and there's less of them out there.
- 39:21Those are the ones I would love to get, like the Jackie
- 39:23Robinsons, you know? Oh.
- 39:24Yeah, like, you know, one of the coolest cards I've ever seen is
- 39:28Tony Southern collector he that 1952 centered Jackie Robinson.
- 39:34The Burger house the. 52 tops. That's yeah, 52 tops.
- 39:38That is unbelievable. So yeah, there's obviously a
- 39:41difference between cards like that and and ones we're talking
- 39:43about, you know, and. But that's the thing.
- 39:46But it's, it's kind of the same. So say, say Jackie was still
- 39:49alive and you had his 1950 Bowman card and you sent it to
- 39:52him to get autographed and you brought it back.
- 39:54All of a sudden it's worth like 10 times more because you paid
- 39:58for it to be 10 times more. I don't know.
- 39:59I my brain doesn't kind. Of get out.
- 40:02I hear what you're saying there for sure, but yeah.
- 40:04I don't believe in the whole autograph thing and making it
- 40:08worth a lot more while the guy's still around and it's like a
- 40:11race to get all these rare cards out.
- 40:13I guess it's another topic then you're kind of asking, but
- 40:18that's where my brain goes. I think you're right.
- 40:21You nailed it on the head. I think it was AI.
- 40:22Don't think it went to a collector.
- 40:24I don't think a collector's buying that card all the sudden
- 40:28when they could have bought it two years ago for $3000.
- 40:32And it frustrates me because I, I never wanted that card.
- 40:37I never liked that card that 94 told.
- 40:39Me that that you never liked that card anyway.
- 40:41I get, I don't think the two. I think the paintings just
- 40:44don't. I don't like it.
- 40:45I've never. I thought that card was a little
- 40:46weird. Yeah.
- 40:47The way they did the painting and stuff.
- 40:48It's iconic. I think that's why it's gone up
- 40:51so much. That's that was one of the other
- 40:53questions I was going to ask you is like, that card is way more
- 40:56famous in the hobby and in the industry than what I consider to
- 41:01be a way better card. This one right here, OK.
- 41:05No, don't show anyone that card. This card right here is 1992 for
- 41:11those listening score the franchise triple auto mutual
- 41:15mantle and yastremsky unbelievable gold signature here
- 41:20on all three. This card.
- 41:22I looked because I was just curious like well, that that
- 41:25mantle card went up like 5X right?
- 41:27This card really hasn't changed price.
- 41:30This card, on the other hand, is I say like more famous with
- 41:33collectors and not that the Mantle Griffey 1 isn't well
- 41:36known by collectors, but it's also very well known by the
- 41:40industry. And I think that's the biggest
- 41:43reason why that card, the Mantle Griffey has 5X and this card,
- 41:48you know, has not. And I consider this a cooler
- 41:51card. There's 500 of these and.
- 41:53Way cooler card I mean. Way.
- 41:55Cool. Griffey's Griffey, but like I
- 41:58mean Stan. Mutual autograph with Mantle and
- 42:01Yaz. Now, I'm not the biggest Yaz
- 42:03guy. You would think I would be in
- 42:04Boston here, but he's not, I think.
- 42:06I think part of the reason this card hasn't gone up is Yaz.
- 42:10I think Yaz kills the card in a way.
- 42:12Sorry guy, I'm gonna get killed for that.
- 42:13I know, but I think. He does.
- 42:14All three of those players were better than Griffey in my
- 42:17opinion. So I.
- 42:18You could say that. In my in my opinion, but he's
- 42:21not as relevant to our generation, you know, none of
- 42:24those players are as relevant. The Griffey factor is.
- 42:27Amazing. And Griffey's the the new
- 42:29mantle. Really.
- 42:30Yeah, he is the Griffey's Jordan mantle.
- 42:33Yeah, yeah, Griffey I never even liked.
- 42:35I mean, I don't want to say it in like Griffey, but growing up,
- 42:37I I never care. I could care less about Griffey.
- 42:40I I to this day, I have a couple Griffey cards.
- 42:43But to your point about that 92, what about being the fact that
- 42:47that was before that? That is Mantle's second pack
- 42:52pulled autograph because they had the 90 ones.
- 42:54Isn't there some importance? I have a Griffey autograph on a
- 42:57classic best from 1992 pack pull that's beats out.
- 43:02I think it might be one of his, if not his first ever pack
- 43:06pulled autograph. That card hasn't moved.
- 43:09That card hasn't gone up because like you said, only collectors
- 43:12know about these other cards. Where that one card, it just
- 43:17kind of just took on a form of its.
- 43:19Own you don't see this card in the golden auctions, you know,
- 43:21you see the mantle Griffey 1 but it's a great card, you know and.
- 43:26But you might, you might all of a sudden that thing just might
- 43:30shoot to the moon because it turned back the clock and you
- 43:34had to bring it up again. And I'm still want that on my 50
- 43:37cards before I die list. I look for that at the show and
- 43:42I saw one and they wanted 5 grand.
- 43:44It was authentic and you know, I crossed my mind, but three
- 43:48grand, I would have scooped it. I'll be honest, if this card
- 43:51does what the Mantle Griffey card does in five XS, I'll
- 43:55probably sell it. I mean.
- 43:58You almost can't at that point. I think cards like that will
- 44:02come down. I think when the hobby ends,
- 44:05when the when the glory, the the boon ends, even booms inside,
- 44:10you know, while you're in a a boom, things end within it too,
- 44:14right. So all of a sudden those ones
- 44:16will just like come crashing down and they'll find like a
- 44:20level ground. Maybe, maybe it'll be a $7000
- 44:23card. You know, I don't see it
- 44:24probably ever going back to three just because it hit that
- 44:28peak. It's very hard to go back to the
- 44:31various lowest, but at some point it'll come.
- 44:34It'll find a lower ground. There's no way it holds $13,000
- 44:38for the next 5 years. It just, it just doesn't make
- 44:42any sense. Yeah, and especially again it's
- 44:44it is 500 of them or probably not 500 like you said, maybe 20%
- 44:48never even made it out of packs are still in the packs or they
- 44:51got thrown out or whatever. But to the point of like, you
- 44:55know, I'm not trying to add really extra money to whatever
- 44:59is invested in my card collection already.
- 45:01I'm just trying to like move the money around now.
- 45:03So if a card 5 XS, then it's hard not to when you're talking
- 45:07about like going from a, you know, a $4000 card to a $20,000
- 45:12card, It's hard to hold a $20,000 card that you did, you
- 45:15know, when you know what else like I could get with that money
- 45:18that I probably I like this card a lot.
- 45:21I think it's really cool. But you know, whatever it's it's
- 45:24AI wouldn't be like it's not a card that I'm going to go to go
- 45:28to my grave with probably not, you know, so but it's cool to
- 45:31it's cool to have it right now. It's a no no brainer move you
- 45:34did. And we have a friend who had he
- 45:37bought a card for 1000 bucks like a year ago.
- 45:39And I don't know why I didn't. I should have been the first one
- 45:42to buy this because I collect this genre of cards.
- 45:44I don't want to bring it up because I don't want to go too
- 45:46specific on it, but it's it's a close to a $20,000 card now and
- 45:50it's a base card and it's like this isn't, this isn't standing.
- 45:55So finally, like he's selling it because it's you can't, you just
- 45:59can't hold that card because it's not going to stay that way
- 46:02forever. I don't care what this player
- 46:04does. It cannot hold that level for
- 46:08very long. It's like a stock that you know
- 46:11goes up 300%. You have to sell it.
- 46:13It doesn't matter if it goes up 1000, at some point it comes
- 46:16back to reality. Just like Bitcoin, It always is
- 46:18going to retrace its steps backwards at some point in time.
- 46:23Whether it goes back past the highest point again, it always
- 46:27traces back to a level ground at some point.
- 46:30It just does. That's how the world works.
- 46:32By the way, that person that you mentioned, we won't mention who
- 46:35it is and I don't know if if they wanna make it known, but if
- 46:39they do, I'd love to have that person on after that card sells
- 46:42and we could talk about that cuz it's a really cool story.
- 46:45Yeah, really awesome. I'm super stoked for the person.
- 46:48They're they're a true collector and true just, but they didn't
- 46:52even want it. They don't want to even sell it
- 46:53because it it takes away from their run of cards.
- 46:56But it's like what he could get these massive dream cards for
- 47:01that. Who would ever spend?
- 47:03And I don't even see him buying a $10,000 card or $20,000 card
- 47:07with the money. It's like one of those things,
- 47:10if I had a car that went up to 20 grand, there's no way I'm
- 47:13putting that back into a $20,000 card.
- 47:15I would probably tuck 10 grand at least into the bank and then
- 47:20buy my Babe Ruth 33 Gaudi card with that $10,000.
- 47:23Well, that's another point I want to shout out John Mangini,
- 47:27who you and I both, you know, consider a friend and and fans
- 47:31of of his channel and everything he does.
- 47:34But he recently came out and he was talking about card values
- 47:37and like, you know, what good is it if your cards go up when if
- 47:42you sell it, you have to buy new cards at the same.
- 47:45The thing is not all cards go up equally, right?
- 47:48So like you could sell a card that 5X like I just did, right?
- 47:53And then I can go buy cards that really haven't run that much
- 47:56right. So you it doesn't all like every
- 47:58card doesn't go up exactly the same.
- 48:00We all know that. But yeah, yeah, I wanted to.
- 48:02Mention that too, because you can do that.
- 48:03You can certain cards that for whatever reason, it might not
- 48:06make sense, but they just shoot up that you've had for a long
- 48:10time. You can sell those and then buy
- 48:11cards that haven't shot up yet. So that's what's cool about it.
- 48:14Yeah. Anyway, last, if you got a
- 48:17another couple minutes, I have one more question I want to ask
- 48:20you regarding a card in the collection.
- 48:22So I've shown I don't know if I show you this card, but I think
- 48:25I probably did. But this is one of the coolest.
- 48:28This is a 1998 select numbers Noma Noma Garcia para.
- 48:35This is select numbers. Now, these cards were unreleased
- 48:38it when when Pinnacle went bankrupt, some of these escaped
- 48:42somehow. And you know, they're they're
- 48:44they're unreleased cards that never made it before they went
- 48:47bankrupt. So this one is graded by PSA.
- 48:50It was graded when I bought it. I recently found out that PSA
- 48:54has recently stopped grading these cards because they're
- 48:57unreleased. Wow.
- 48:59Yeah, I didn't, I didn't know. I mean, I started thinking like,
- 49:01isn't there a bunch of like old vintage cards that made it out
- 49:05like the 61 tops game or 61 dice game cards?
- 49:10I don't think those were released, but I think PSA still
- 49:12grades though. So maybe they made that decision
- 49:15on those two. But in the comments, did anyone
- 49:18else know that? Like if a card was never meant
- 49:20to be released, but it somehow got out that PSA doesn't grade
- 49:24those 'cause that's a new thing that I just found out.
- 49:26They used to grade these, now they don't.
- 49:29And my question to you is, what do you think that that does that
- 49:33make the card more valuable in the long run if it's already
- 49:37graded by PSA and they don't grade it anymore or not that it
- 49:41really matters? But like, just out of curiosity,
- 49:43does it make it a cooler collectible or a more valuable
- 49:47one if it can no longer be graded by PSA and it's already
- 49:50graded by him? Or does it not matter?
- 49:52Or does it make it less valuable?
- 49:54Well, we're, we're all like sheep in a way, you know, we
- 49:57all, we're all like sheep and gone astray in certain ways.
- 50:00And a lot of people have gone astray looking at pop reports
- 50:05only. And they're obsessed with pop
- 50:07reports. So you could say there's not
- 50:10going to be any more coming up on the pop report.
- 50:12And that's how people judge scarcity is they look at the pop
- 50:16report and they're like, that is the Bible.
- 50:19And there's only for those that exist, period.
- 50:23So yeah, that could tell you that thing is going to
- 50:24skyrocket. You know, I don't really see a
- 50:29counter argument to it because you, it's in the slab, it's
- 50:34graded, it is a real card. My thought would be the reason
- 50:38maybe PSA is doing that is to deter theft from companies now
- 50:45from like fanatics right now, from guys backdooring cards and
- 50:48then having them graded. I don't know why they would do
- 50:51that because it's a real card. It existed.
- 50:54They produced it. Yeah.
- 50:57That I don't have much more to say other than the fact that I
- 51:01guess my opinion would be it's going to make it more valuable
- 51:03because the pop report's not going to grow anymore and people
- 51:06live and breathe and die by that.
- 51:08Pop report OK, yeah, I want to give a shout out to Goudy Gum on
- 51:12Instagram. Goudy Gum fellow Pedro collector
- 51:16and Red Red Sox collector. So he he was the one who he
- 51:21randomly he knew I had a couple of these cards and he does too.
- 51:25And so he sent me a message on Instagram just to let me know
- 51:27that somehow he found this out. He got it.
- 51:30He showed me an e-mail from PSA that basically were saying that
- 51:33they no longer grade them because they were unreleased.
- 51:36But then I was like, yeah, but there's a bunch of unreleased
- 51:39like pre war, right, and vintage cards that PSAI think still
- 51:42grade. So it was just interesting, like
- 51:44why they made that decision, you know, and and I know another
- 51:49shout out Brian high pop professor just landed a Maddox
- 51:52one of these. Yes, I saw it.
- 51:54I let. Him know like hey, don't waste
- 51:55your time sending that to PSA because they're not going to
- 51:58grade it so. Let me, let me make a comment on
- 52:00that card. So I'm, you know me, I'm not a
- 52:0390s guy. I have no attraction to those
- 52:0690s cards. For the most part.
- 52:08I didn't have money in the, you know, in the early 90s and then
- 52:12in the mid 90s, I was buying, I was only buying great adventures
- 52:15cards. That's what I collected.
- 52:17I started opening packs in the 2000s.
- 52:19So the 2000s is where I gravitate to and and they're
- 52:23just way cheaper. I mean, I I'm fully attracted to
- 52:25them because I opened millions of boxes in the 2000s.
- 52:29But the 90s cards to me, most not, I could say most of them
- 52:34aren't that attract. I'm not attracted like the PM
- 52:36GS, I think are some of the ugliest cards I've ever seen.
- 52:38I I have a EX credentials card like I've experimented.
- 52:43I bought some for like Hideki Matsui.
- 52:45That was my experimental, some of the more 2000s I guess for
- 52:49him, but I've seen all those in the flesh.
- 52:52I'm not distracting, but that card that select numbers is the
- 52:56greatest looking baseball card I've ever seen.
- 52:59Those are absolutely mind blowing.
- 53:04And if a company will make a card like that again today?
- 53:07Grand Slam. So they they do Pani still
- 53:11makes, I don't know if they still, they don't still do it,
- 53:13but there's Panini. They don't hit the same, but
- 53:15they Panini kind of brought it back a little bit And they like
- 53:18I have a select numbers of Freddie Freeman card that I just
- 53:21randomly picked up cuz like, hey, select numbers, you know,
- 53:24it's just kind of like a a blast to the past or whatever.
- 53:26But I'm gonna have to look that up because those cards are
- 53:29spectacular. They do not, they don't hit like
- 53:31like like these cards do so. That thing is, it's kind of just
- 53:35unbelievable. Mesmerizing.
- 53:37Unbelievable that, you know, obviously like the 93 finest
- 53:41refractors in the early refractors, but there's they're
- 53:44not that they're no, they're not like crazy special to me.
- 53:47They're all this you. Know by the way the 90s cards,
- 53:50they continue to just I cannot believe how much they keep going
- 53:54up in price. I was wrong there.
- 53:55I was wrong there. You, you and like a lot of
- 53:59people, and I actually kind of, I was like, yeah, you're
- 54:00probably right. You were like, you know, 90s
- 54:02cards have had their day. They've already grown and then
- 54:04just keep, they just keep going up and up and up.
- 54:06So it's, it is crazy to see some of the like the Ken Griffey
- 54:11Junior PMG 1998 recently sold. It's numbered to 50.
- 54:16It's sold for like, I think it was like $90,000 for one of
- 54:19those and it's insane. Derek Jeter essential
- 54:23credentials numbered to six, of course.
- 54:25I mean it's low, but $500,000, 1998, so these.
- 54:30Cards aren't even good looking in my opinion but that I don't
- 54:34care either. I collect printing plates that
- 54:36some people call on good looking, but it just to me, I
- 54:41find it hilarious cuz I don't know, you know, it's it just
- 54:46shows rarity and scarcity, even though it's manufactured really
- 54:51is truly rare and scarce and their people are turned onto it.
- 54:55And I think that's I still hold that it's 2000s are way are are
- 54:59the next thing to take off in the hobby as we move up the
- 55:04chain as that, you know, as 10 more years when guys are, you
- 55:09know, the next generation of 40 year olds come along.
- 55:12I love the two and in fact, tomorrow I am meeting up with a
- 55:16local dealer here and gonna pick up two really awesome Pedro
- 55:22one's 2001, another one's 2004. Like just really awesome cards.
- 55:28So yeah, I guess I'm I'm out of my I'm not buying any big cards
- 55:32mode now. Yeah, yeah, yeah, you're, you're
- 55:34back on the, you're back on the bull train since you made that
- 55:36money from that sale, right? Yeah, it's like, you know, I
- 55:39take a little of the money and of course, you know, put it
- 55:42away, save it a little bit and put it in the card account.
- 55:44But then most of it goes back into into cards, so yeah.
- 55:49Well, I'm on your train. I'm deleting all my eBay
- 55:53searches. I'm looking for four cards only.
- 55:57I'm really going to try not buy a card for a long time.
- 56:01There's going to be a couple exceptions, but very small on my
- 56:05buddy Robert's Whatnot channel. I'll buy some certain Mickey
- 56:10with ears cards that are, you know, but otherwise I'm really,
- 56:14but I'm not shutting down because I think cards are are
- 56:16going down, going down or anything like that.
- 56:19I still think this is going to keep running.
- 56:21I just I'm going to sit off. I have my collection.
- 56:24It's pretty magical looking right now and I kind of want to
- 56:28enjoy what I have for as long as I can.
- 56:31It's tough. Yeah.
- 56:32And you can't, we can't. You can't go at a certain pace
- 56:35forever. You got to kind of take the foot
- 56:37off the gas for a little bit and then there'll be a day when you
- 56:40you step back on it. But the, that's the great part
- 56:42is we, we both have collections. I think that even if we had to
- 56:46stop collecting right now, which luckily we don't, but I think we
- 56:49would still have a collection that we could be happy with for
- 56:52the rest of our life, you know? 100% I have enough cards where I
- 56:55can never buy one again and I go back and just continue to enjoy
- 57:00what I have. And we say that all the time.
- 57:02It's kind of cliche and stupid, you know?
- 57:04Enjoy what you got. No, obviously collect what you
- 57:09like. Just keep like all these sayings
- 57:12that we say, They just didn't infuriate me inside, but I say
- 57:16them too and they're just like, they're stupid.
- 57:18Wait before we before we go, I'll leave you with one.
- 57:21This is a new saying. I think you've probably never
- 57:23heard this. Buy the card, not the grade.
- 57:26Have you heard that? That's I just, I just picked up
- 57:28on that recently. That's a new one.
- 57:30It's a brand new one, not the one it just.
- 57:33Killed me a little more inside even more.
- 57:36All right, Dylan, we're about an hour here.
- 57:38I think that was good, right, Unless you had anything else or
- 57:40we saved. That was awesome I got we can
- 57:42save for the next show all. Right.
- 57:45Well, guys, thanks for another episode here on Sports Card
- 57:47Clubhouse. Dylan, thank you.
- 57:49I appreciate you getting up early to do these.
- 57:51I know it's probably not the ideal time, but hey, I
- 57:55appreciate it, man. Thank you.
- 57:57I have a blast talking to. You alright?
- 57:58Thank you guys.
