- 0:03It's always great to see you on a Friday evening.
- 0:07And I'm glad that you're here tonight for this particular
- 0:10chapter. Because it is a very important.
- 0:14One for many reasons, as you will discover that the subject
- 0:19of our study, this evening is perhaps the most infamous scene
- 0:23pertaining to David's life. You have heard me say different
- 0:28points throughout our studying first and second Samuel, that
- 0:30when we come to a certain event or occurrence, I mentioned how
- 0:35this will be a pivotal moment for David and in some cases for
- 0:39the nation of Israel as a whole and I'm going to say that again
- 0:42tonight. I'm going to say that again for
- 0:45this chapter and add to that that what is going to take place
- 0:50in these verses. Will bring about results unlike
- 0:56anything else before after this notorious episode and it won't
- 1:00be for the good. After you and I complete chapter
- 1:0511 and chapter 12, you're going to notice something for the rest
- 1:07of. The second Samuel, what you're
- 1:09going to see is that there will be a heightened.
- 1:14And heartbreaking series of crimes scandals.
- 1:21Betrayals feuds division. And it will have an impact
- 1:29Beyond David's own household. It will Ripple into society
- 1:33itself and you might be wondering, why will that be the
- 1:36case and a major contribution to the chaos that will ensue is
- 1:43because David is about to now execute a series of Unthinkable
- 1:48actions. That will trigger a lifetime of
- 1:53repercussions. This is a serious chapter 2
- 1:57solemn chapter. It's a dark chapter.
- 2:01David is going to have a moral failure.
- 2:03And this moral failure will indeed breed tragic fruit.
- 2:10In fact, it will come to the point of his final breath and
- 2:13even beyond that. And that is the power of sin.
- 2:19And all of this is is going to be an upsetting reporting as
- 2:23upsetting as it is. It's just a testament to the
- 2:29Integrity of the word of God. The Bible is not just a book of
- 2:34Truth. The Bible tells the truth, And
- 2:38the Holy Spirit because we believe this book is inspired by
- 2:40the holy spirit because he is the true author and he has used
- 2:44human vessels throughout time, he in his power and his wisdom
- 2:48potentially restricted, the authors of this book to hide the
- 2:53failures of their hero Heroes and even their own shortcomings
- 2:58and we should praise God for that because it's through these
- 3:01failures and these descriptions of Falls that we get to glean
- 3:07wisdom. Mm, and we get to prevent these
- 3:10disasters from occurring in our own lives.
- 3:12If we if we have ears to hear And so, what's going to happen
- 3:16in second Samuel chapter 11, is that this is going to be a
- 3:20serious Crossroads for the rest of this narrative and it's all
- 3:24going to begin with the act of adultery.
- 3:30Where a man will take somebody else's wife and engage in
- 3:35Intercourse and our intimacy. That is illegitimate, that's
- 3:39where it's all going to start. And the pursuit of wisdom
- 3:44tonight is what we Endeavor to do because we want to look at
- 3:47this and realize, this is this is given to us for a purpose.
- 3:53And so we don't choose our topics for Friday nights.
- 3:55That's the beauty of verse by verse preaching.
- 3:57We just honor what God puts before us as we go through a
- 4:00book and we stick to it, no matter how difficult it may be
- 4:03to hear know how difficult it may be to to comprehend or to
- 4:08apply. And we trust that God has the
- 4:10best in mind for us and we just we endure what he has to say.
- 4:15So I want to say this from the from the beginning before I read
- 4:17because our Bible study tonight, it's only going to be the first
- 4:19five verses we can rush to this. But you know the model here we
- 4:24don't do that. We take our time to digest all
- 4:27that God has to say. I want to say, by mentioning
- 4:32this that the sin of adultery is Never by accident, it's never by
- 4:36accident. It is.
- 4:38Only the ugly fruit of previous unchecked failures that have
- 4:44overtime work together to cause a collapse.
- 4:49And the purpose of this study tonight is to examine the
- 4:52contributions to this. Great fall in David's life.
- 4:57You see what the Holy Spirit does by giving us these details
- 5:00is to show us what went wrong before this wrong and that's
- 5:05important for us to grasp because as we examine these
- 5:08things, we will in return. Be able to examine what can
- 5:11corrode and what can actually influence our ability to resist
- 5:15all temptation, especially the tent.
- 5:18Tatian in regards to the category of sexual immorality.
- 5:24Sexual morality is a growing struggle, not just in the world,
- 5:27but in the church statistics are staggering staggering.
- 5:32And when I learned early on in Ministry, of what people in the
- 5:36church are indulging in and what even pastors are indulging and
- 5:40they say, 50% of pastors are involved in.
- 5:45Pornography 50% And then we wonder perhaps, why are we not
- 5:51seeing the power of God? Like we should be.
- 5:54And so this is vital because in my personal study of the first
- 5:58five verses I was able to find five factors that contributed to
- 6:06this moral failure. And as we carefully examine
- 6:09these contributions to this agonizing sin it will help us be
- 6:15prepared, be guarded, be alert, but that's how I want you to
- 6:19have a lens. As I read these verses as it is
- 6:21our practice. I'm going to read these five
- 6:24verses and you they mention other details but I want you
- 6:26with eyes to see what is it? That went wrong and David's life
- 6:32at this point of his life and maybe before this point of his
- 6:35life that encouraged him to embrace this sin.
- 6:40So freely and so pay attention. I hope you have a copy of God's
- 6:44word in your hand and we're going to pray and ask the Lord
- 6:47to help us with this study and trust that it will build our
- 6:50faith for his glory. Lord, we know that this text is
- 6:55dark. It may be disturbing.
- 6:59But you have given it to us because love warns.
- 7:04And we just thank you in advance for why you have given us this
- 7:08tax and how in your Providence it has come before us on this
- 7:11Friday evening. So Lord we just pray for a
- 7:13special assistance from the spirit of wisdom and revelation.
- 7:20That it may rest upon the ministry of the word and that we
- 7:22may be built up. As a result in Jesus is
- 7:25matchless precious glorious. Holy name.
- 7:28We pray. Amen.
- 7:30Second Samuel chapter 11. Verse 1.
- 7:35In the spring of the year, the time, when kings go out to
- 7:38battle, David sent joab, and her servants with him and all
- 7:45Israel. And they ravaged the ammonites
- 7:48and besieged. Rabbah, but David remained a
- 7:51Jerusalem. It happened late one afternoon
- 7:55when David arose from his couch and was walking on the roof of
- 7:58the King's house that he saw from the roof.
- 8:01A woman bathing And the woman was very beautiful and behold,
- 8:06rather than David sent and inquired about the woman.
- 8:08And one said, is this not Bathsheba the daughter of eliam,
- 8:12the wife of Uriah, the hittite. So David sent Messengers and
- 8:16took her and she came to him and he lay with her, she had been
- 8:21purifying herself from her uncleanness and we should she
- 8:24returned to her house and the woman conceived and she sent and
- 8:29told David. I am pregnant.
- 8:34Not very inspiring but very instructive.
- 8:37Is there anything that stands out to you in those verses?
- 8:40Yes. Mmm, David sent his men out to
- 8:47war, but he remained at home. We're going to see why that is a
- 8:51problem in a moment. Anything else?
- 8:54Yes. Yes, that is a huge problem.
- 9:00He committed adultery. Is there anything that you see
- 9:02there that led to that? Okay.
- 9:13So the in the gate indication here is not that he saw her and
- 9:20that he bounced his eyes and realize, that's a woman bathing
- 9:22in her in her own home. There seems to be prolonged
- 9:26gaze. Absolutely.
- 9:29Because he was able to register that.
- 9:30She was beautiful and we're going to see how a look can be
- 9:34extremely dangerous. Yes.
- 9:44Even upon the report of The Men Who informed him who she was
- 9:49that did not deter him from pursuing his lust.
- 9:55Yes, Yes. It's not a good sign for you to
- 10:09be laying around in your couch until the evening.
- 10:12That's a dangerous sign. These are wonderful.
- 10:13You guys are touching on all these points.
- 10:15Yes. Isn't that interesting that the
- 10:31servants, they're not stupid if they didn't pick up?
- 10:34On, what's Happening early on? Surely something must have
- 10:37registered when a woman came to David by herself to be with him
- 10:41by themselves. And there's a lot to say about
- 10:44that. And one of those things is that
- 10:46it's very difficult to correct, somebody in power, isn't it?
- 10:51For a lot of people it is, especially when that person is a
- 10:53man of God, and they have a history where they have done,
- 10:56much for God, it's very difficult for people to be able
- 10:59to stand up for righteousness and to correct somebody who has
- 11:02influence. That's a great observation.
- 11:04The servants seem to be complying with what's happening.
- 11:07Yes, Very good observation. We're putting all the blame on
- 11:15David here. Are we not?
- 11:17And yes, it's true. That he is the instigator but
- 11:19Bathsheba seems to show very little if any Resistance.
- 11:26It takes two to tango my friends, doesn't it?
- 11:29Yes. Yes, worries.
- 11:49Yes. Yeah, that's right.
- 12:01And as I said earlier, you don't just fall into the sin of
- 12:04adultery or sexual morality for that matter.
- 12:08Yes. Yeah.
- 12:26Isn't that interesting? I was originally sent wonderful
- 12:28to come to Bible study to find answers to these questions.
- 12:31Why is it mentioning here at the end of verse at the end of verse
- 12:344 that she was? She had purified herself from
- 12:37her uncleanness? Well that's a law.
- 12:40That's a levitical law and it's an indication of well, you'll
- 12:46find out, you'll find out but good, good observation, maybe
- 12:49one or two more. Yes, Carl.
- 13:15Yeah, that's an interesting observation to.
- 13:17Well, I think their shame here think there's embarrassment
- 13:19here, think there's regret, I think there's grief and this is
- 13:22just the beginning of the pangs of what is to come.
- 13:26And as maybe we find one more if the guys can help with the
- 13:29buzzing here there's a buzzing on my right side.
- 13:31Maybe you don't hear it but I do hear it.
- 13:33And maybe as I go along, they'll disappear as I get louder.
- 13:36Maybe that won't happen. But yeah, if you can help with
- 13:39it, I'd be wonderful. Maybe one more observation.
- 13:43Yes. Say that again.
- 13:49Oh, what? So you have to speak up if you
- 13:50don't mind. When he was bored.
- 13:54Yeah. Yeah.
- 13:54That's great. Yeah, boredom.
- 13:56Yeah, there's boredom. You're absolutely.
- 13:58And you had something sister. Yes, he does have a few wives.
- 14:07In fact, a numerous amount of wives, great observation.
- 14:12Why? I think you guys just finished
- 14:13the Bible said I don't really need to continue.
- 14:15We can just wrap up sing a couple songs and go home but we
- 14:18won't because we're going to expand on the very things that
- 14:21you just mentioned. And so I told you today that
- 14:24there is five factors not just in here.
- 14:28I mean I would say four of them are here but one is connected to
- 14:31To what's happening here. That is completely related to
- 14:34David. And so if you're a note-taker or
- 14:36if you just have this wonderful gift of retaining things in your
- 14:39mind, pay attention because we want to look at these failures.
- 14:43That contributed to this ultimate failure and failure.
- 14:46Number one, Is not found in these verses, but it is
- 14:50something that is observed when you have an overarching view of
- 14:54David's life and that is this, the failure to deal with
- 14:58unrestrained passions, early on the failure to deal with
- 15:05unrestrained passions, early on, we have familiarize ourselves
- 15:09with David enough to know as our sister just said that although
- 15:13he was a spiritually strong man, he did find himself. if wanting
- 15:18in one very important aspect, this man had great conviction
- 15:23for much of the law. But if there was one thing that
- 15:26he failed in it, it was in his perception of God's design for
- 15:30marriage. He fell short and he's
- 15:34commendable for his convictions and other places.
- 15:37But when it came to the blueprint of marital Covenant,
- 15:40he was somebody who was severely lacking in the number of wives
- 15:44that David had and accumulated over his young life into into
- 15:49his adult life is telling its evidence that he did not have
- 15:54self-control in the area of sexual desires.
- 15:59And so we look at this and we realized that it started with
- 16:03having two wives and having to let to having multiple and who
- 16:07would have thought that having multiple lives would eventually
- 16:10lead him to taking somebody else's wife?
- 16:14And you and I have to begin in our analysis of David's fall
- 16:18here because it is absolutely foundational.
- 16:21See, when we see what happens with his coveting of uriah's
- 16:26wife, that is not something spontaneous, that's not
- 16:29something that just spring up out of anywhere.
- 16:32It is a result and it stemmed from a serious defect in his
- 16:35whole belief system. And here is where I need you to
- 16:38pay attention tonight that who you are today, and what you
- 16:45invest in yourself or lack of investment.
- 16:48Today will determine who you'll be tomorrow.
- 16:53That includes what you believe and that includes how you
- 16:58behave. That is a rule for every element
- 17:01and every aspect of life including how you and I deal
- 17:05with sexual Temptation. Now If you are a person who
- 17:11struggles and who is weak in the area of succumbing to passions,
- 17:17whether it's promiscuity, whether it's pornography,
- 17:20whether it's being inappropriately, flirtatious and
- 17:24think that at some point that's just going to disappear.
- 17:27When you, when you realize you need to settle down, you are
- 17:30dangerously mistaken, dangerously mistaken.
- 17:36Lust is something that can never be satisfied.
- 17:40When it is fed. When you try to fulfill its
- 17:43urges, I'll tell you what happens.
- 17:45Your only strengthening your appetite You're only
- 17:49strengthening your appetite. Only when you give yourself to
- 17:54God's design for sexuality will you know the fruition and the
- 17:58blessing of it, when you step outside of those boundaries, you
- 18:02inherit messiness and that is why people who are addicted to
- 18:07pornography. They find themselves over time,
- 18:10exploring and in an opening themselves up to very strange
- 18:13and extreme versions of it. Because what happens is they
- 18:17blunt their appetite and then they need to go for another kind
- 18:21of That brings a shock to them. And so what you see here with
- 18:26David is a prime example that if you think you will actually calm
- 18:32that Temptation down by giving into it realize that this man
- 18:37could snap his finger and have any woman at his command and it
- 18:41still left him wanting and chasing and planning and
- 18:45scheming. And here's why many people fail
- 18:51in this area because they view sexuality purely on a physical
- 18:55level. So what do they do?
- 18:56They look for a physical Outlet to deal with it.
- 18:59When at its core, it's a spiritual issue.
- 19:03And so we come up with strange Solutions, the worst of them is
- 19:07just giving into it because we think that sexual desires is
- 19:12equated to being thirsty or being hungry, you can't survive
- 19:16by not drinking or by not eating, you can survive by not
- 19:19giving over into yourself into this desire, you can survive as
- 19:23tormenting as it might be to. You can actually, you can
- 19:25actually survive to your dying day without giving in to this at
- 19:29any point. But see, we've been fed from
- 19:32this culture that you can't live without it.
- 19:33That this is the, the prime Ecstasy of all other pleasures.
- 19:37And so people just, they just give in and you have other
- 19:39people who have innocent Solutions Who think that, you
- 19:43know, they can just give themselves into Reckless
- 19:45Behavior, but oh, once they get married, all of it will be
- 19:48solved. Listen, marriage is not your
- 19:51savior for sexual sin Christ is Marriage, isn't once you find
- 19:57that person and you and you you consummate and you're intimate
- 20:01with that person. If you don't realize that what
- 20:04you allow, previously is not dealt with your bringing that
- 20:08into your marriage and that's why I tell single people all the
- 20:11time. If you are bound particularly to
- 20:13pornography and you have the same time are Desiring marriage
- 20:20Kill that thing before you even consider a spouse.
- 20:24Kill that thing before you even consider a spouse because I'm
- 20:28telling you the spouse will not save you.
- 20:32Only the Holy Spirit can. And so you have to deal with
- 20:35these things early on, because if not subdued, by the spirit,
- 20:40natural means will not work and what we learned before we even
- 20:44come to, these verses is a universal principle that God has
- 20:47established in Galatians 6:7, whatever one shows that will he
- 20:51also reap And for so long, he's been sowing whenever I want
- 20:57something. Whenever I want something new
- 20:59and exciting whenever I see a woman giving me attention and
- 21:02compliments me and gives me, gives me this feeling of
- 21:04excitement and exuberance and I give into that, I marry her and
- 21:08I add her to the list of my roster of woman.
- 21:13Because he's been doing that for so long.
- 21:15Now it's manifesting in a new level, see what David is able to
- 21:19do here is because of his lack of conviction from his teenage
- 21:24years. and so realize again, that your War would sin today is
- 21:31an investment for your Victory tomorrow and your leniency for
- 21:35sin today could be the investment of great collapse
- 21:39that is unforeseen failure, number one that led to this Was
- 21:45the inability to restrain passions early on by the power
- 21:51of the spirit. Now let's come to the second
- 21:53failure in verse 1 and the spring of the year, the time
- 21:55when kings go out to battle Davidson job and his servants
- 21:59with him and all Israel and they ravaged the ammonites and
- 22:02besieged. Rabbah, but David remained at
- 22:04Jerusalem. That first part of this verse,
- 22:06we're going to touch on at the end, but for the sake of our
- 22:08assignment tonight, let's underscore the last phrase here.
- 22:12The last sentence of this verse. But David remained.
- 22:15At Jerusalem the same verse informs us, why?
- 22:18This is a problem when kings. David is a king go out to
- 22:23battle. He stayed at home.
- 22:27David had to duty. And his duty was to go out into
- 22:31the battlefield. Why in the spring it was easier
- 22:33to go to war. It's like things in life that
- 22:35every year, have seasons. And this time, they didn't have
- 22:37the technology to go to war during the winter.
- 22:39Or during stormy Seasons, they went.
- 22:41When the ground would be drying, there is more favorable.
- 22:44Weather seems strange to us. But that was the case.
- 22:46David was supposed to be out on the battlefield and instead he's
- 22:49staying in his bedroom. Why?
- 22:54I mean, we can, we can give many reasons why regardless it's not
- 22:56justified. He's supposed to be there and
- 22:59maybe he's getting old and he thought to himself, I'm not into
- 23:01this anymore. I can't move like, I used to,
- 23:04but he still was a commander and he needed to be with his men.
- 23:08And instead, he's sitting on the couch watching TV.
- 23:11And here's the thing that we have to understand, that David
- 23:14is neglecting his god-given responsibility.
- 23:18And here's the point here, when anybody has a casual attitude
- 23:21towards the will of God, they always leave the door unlocked
- 23:26for temptation to kick, open. There is something extremely
- 23:32protective when you and I are actively engaged in what God has
- 23:37called us to do when you go beyond this idea, that God just
- 23:41saved me so I can get to heaven. But he also deposited something
- 23:44in me so that I can serve him on the earth when you get to that
- 23:48point, that's a wonderful motivation unto righteousness.
- 23:54She realized that you've been commissioned by a holy God, from
- 23:57Heaven here on Earth. And you realize that there is
- 24:00something of me that has been fashioned to fill a position
- 24:04that nobody else does or can. That's that's awesome.
- 24:08There's Hope there their Zeal there.
- 24:12There's there's purpose there and when you fail to perceive
- 24:16that, here's what begins to happen.
- 24:18You begin to become open to settle for empty Pleasures or
- 24:23vein passions. So people who don't take the
- 24:26will of God, seriously are the most susceptible to the world
- 24:29seductions and fleshly impulses all the time all the time.
- 24:34And so I think here, this is a great place to ask a very
- 24:36pressing question for all of us at this Bible study, you ready?
- 24:39Am I where I'm supposed to be? When it comes to the will of God
- 24:44for my life notice. I didn't say are you perfect?
- 24:49I'm asking you what path you're on.
- 24:52What path are you on? What do you see?
- 24:54Even though you can't see the future?
- 24:56What steps are you? Taking that can give you the
- 24:59confidence that I am in the will of God.
- 25:02What's your relationship with the word of God?
- 25:04Like You know Kings were called to write down the law and to
- 25:11read it day and night. They were supposed to have a
- 25:13copy of God's word. And if we're royalty according
- 25:18to Christ, and we should adopt Royal principles and
- 25:21disciplines. What's your relationship like
- 25:23with the word of God? What's your relationship with
- 25:25prayer? What's your prayer life?
- 25:28Like, ready for this one? What's your relationship with
- 25:31the local church? What's are you obeying?
- 25:33The will of God and how you should relate to the local
- 25:35church. Are your gifts collecting dust
- 25:39or are they opening up and being used to build other people?
- 25:43See you have to consider that and if you can't say, I don't
- 25:46know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, you're in
- 25:48jeopardy. You're in Jeopardy.
- 25:51David is in a dangerous place right now because David is not
- 25:54where Christ called them to be and Christ promises you.
- 25:58And I a particular joy that can only be found on the path of
- 26:04obedience, and when you don't walk in obedience, you miss out
- 26:10on that joy. And when you miss out on that
- 26:13Joy, you are willing to make room for false happiness.
- 26:21In other things to satisfy you. In January this year, it will
- 26:26be. I believe, 11 years of walking
- 26:28with the Lord for me personally because I got saved the 2012 of
- 26:31January. Can I tell you something these
- 26:3311 years? He's never failed to satisfy me.
- 26:37Never never failed. I can tell you 100 failures of
- 26:41the false promises of this world but I can guarantee you that
- 26:44Christ has never failed to fulfill me.
- 26:47Am I different? Am I an alien?
- 26:49No, I'm Flesh. And Blood just like you and I
- 26:51testify confidently that Christ satisfies.
- 26:56And here's a principle that I give people, especially in the
- 26:58area of sexual Temptation. And I hope that this is a life
- 27:03verse for you in the Book of Proverbs, it's in chapter 27 and
- 27:07verse 7, and I want you to see it in your own Bible so that you
- 27:10can have it embedded on your soul.
- 27:15Chapter 27, verse 7 of proverbs. 27 verse 7, one who is full
- 27:30loathes honey. But to one who is hungry.
- 27:36Everything bitter is sweet one. Who is full loads honey, but one
- 27:44who is hungry, everything bitter.
- 27:47Is sweet. When people begin to feel the
- 27:51intensification of exploration of worldly, Goods.
- 27:55I know one thing about that person.
- 27:57They're hungry. And the substance that should be
- 28:02filling them in Christ is lacking.
- 28:06And we are all wired to know contentment.
- 28:12Or else, what's this Pursuit of Happiness that people are on?
- 28:16The the pursuit is not wrong, it's the object that's wrong,
- 28:19right? But the person who is full in
- 28:24God, he can walk by a buffet of Temptation and not even look
- 28:28twice because he's already at rest.
- 28:33And so here is the joy. He is the, here's the goodness
- 28:36of God, that when you are satisfied in him, it keeps you
- 28:41from lurking and looking for things that even if you know,
- 28:45it's bitter but because you have nothing else going on, you need
- 28:48to fill that void. So you begin to now taste here
- 28:51and there and it's actually poisonous, it's bitter.
- 28:55So the solution here is deeper than then, this is right, and
- 28:59this is wrong, you're not satisfied, you're not satisfied.
- 29:04Well, it's because my wife has been like this lately is because
- 29:06my husband's by Lego City. No, no, you're not satisfied in
- 29:10God. It's as simple as that.
- 29:12Don't give me any excuses down deep inside.
- 29:15That's the core reason why you are flirting with this sin.
- 29:19And so you. And I have to understand here,
- 29:21that David being outside of the will of God is a recipe.
- 29:25For something that he's about to indulge in that will hurt him
- 29:28and bite back failure. A failure to be diligent in the
- 29:34duty that God has called him and his called you the closer you
- 29:39are to the will of God, the further, you will be away from
- 29:41temptation. But the moment you Veer off,
- 29:44you're in dangerous territory. So here's the thing, people ask
- 29:48me. Do you have devotion?
- 29:49I didn't feel like it's not a matter of what you feel.
- 29:51Can I tell you what? It's a matter of survival, I
- 29:54don't feel like it, who cares, huh?
- 29:56Doesn't matter. It's a matter of you surviving.
- 29:58That's what it is and if you have that mentality realized,
- 30:01what if I don't cling to you if I don't stay close to you, I
- 30:04will invite things. I I'm capable of doing anything
- 30:07all know David here. This is King David, the
- 30:10psalmist, the worship leader. The Men Who had Faith.
- 30:13Unlike any other Israel. This man was susceptible being
- 30:17outside of the will of God. Be careful, stay close to him.
- 30:20Stay close to him. That's the second failure.
- 30:23A failure to be diligent in our duty.
- 30:25The first one was a failure to deal with unrestrained passions
- 30:28early. On now we come to the third one.
- 30:29The third failure that led to this ultimate failure, a failure
- 30:33to conquer idleness. It's very similar to the second
- 30:39point, but it's worth mentioning on its own.
- 30:41It Happened One late afternoon. When David arose from his couch
- 30:45some translations as we heard says evening.
- 30:49It's not uncommon than nor is it in different parts of the world
- 30:52today, for people to wake up, very early, work hard.
- 30:57And then to have a siesta, a nap, the hottest period of the
- 31:01day and wake up and go back to work, but the holy spirit is
- 31:06very specific in highlighting that David resting on his couch
- 31:10is not a result of a long, an early day of work because he's
- 31:13not at work one and two It Happened.
- 31:17One late. Late afternoon close to the
- 31:20evening time that we find David on his bed.
- 31:26Laziness doesn't always lead to lust but it definitely
- 31:30encourages it. See what we see here.
- 31:33Is this man is lounging around the house.
- 31:34He's extensively sleeping. He's browsing in his Palace and
- 31:40you've often heard it said that. If the devil can't make you bad
- 31:44he'll make you busy, right? Have you heard that before the
- 31:46devil can't make you bad? He'll make you busy, but you got
- 31:49to realize there's another side to the issue.
- 31:51And here it is. If you and I are not hard at
- 31:54work, we give the devil some work to do.
- 31:59So there's two extremes, right? We can become so busy with our
- 32:04worldly responsibilities that we forget our Heavenly calling, but
- 32:07you and I can also be So distracted, so laid-back that
- 32:13the lack of work in our lives, the lack of the sweat of the
- 32:16brow, the lack of being focused on having a mission and
- 32:19assignments, gives Satan something to work with.
- 32:24I don't think we consider that as a danger.
- 32:26But can I tell you something at this bible study this Friday
- 32:28night. Yes, lazy Christians are
- 32:31dangerous. Lazy Christians are dangerous.
- 32:35There are danger onto themselves and they are a danger to the
- 32:39health of the local church. You have to just read the
- 32:43Epistles to see that if there is a disruption or a distraction in
- 32:47a home, in a circle of friends are in a congregation.
- 32:50There is a high chance that the source you ready for this is
- 32:55someone who is not given to daily responsibilities.
- 32:59And has a lot of time on their hands.
- 33:03I want to show you how that's true, not just for sexual sin.
- 33:07I want to, I want to show you how it's true even for different
- 33:09types of sin, go to the epistle. First Timothy in chapter 5.
- 33:18A failure to conquer idleness. in 1st, Timothy Chapter 5 and in
- 33:25verse 13, Paul is speaking about young widows in the church and
- 33:32he's giving Timothy instructions of who to enroll and who not to
- 33:36enroll in the financial support Ministry and Paul reserves.
- 33:42The younger widows who have lost their husbands from being a part
- 33:46of that contribution system for different reasons.
- 33:51And he speaks about the danger of their youth and the danger of
- 33:55their single status. And in this verse, in verse 13,
- 33:59he's going to mention something about the manifestation of their
- 34:03lack of maturity. And it's really an insight about
- 34:07the danger of idleness. So, you're there in first,
- 34:09Timothy 513. Let's read besides that, they
- 34:13learn. It's talking about the young
- 34:14widows to be idlers going about from house to house and not only
- 34:19idle hours but also God. Ships and busybodies saying,
- 34:23what they should not. What Paul is saying, Timothy, be
- 34:30careful and enrolling younger widows because, look, how they
- 34:33use their free time instead of caring for The Afflicted.
- 34:36Instead of washing the feet of the Saints, instead of utilizing
- 34:39that free time to be devoted to the Lord, and being like Anna,
- 34:42who came to the temple. And she was an older Widow, but
- 34:45she fasted and prayed. Instead of doing those things,
- 34:48they are on a campaign of going from house to house to house and
- 34:53in our contacts, ready for this from group chat to text group to
- 34:56this or that. From Instagram to Snapchat, too.
- 35:00I don't know what else is out there.
- 35:02And are saying things that they shouldn't be saying.
- 35:06And here he highlights. That this is dangerous because
- 35:12their free time is luring them to be nosey to be investigative
- 35:18to look into the Affairs of other people's lives and because
- 35:20they don't have much going on in their own lives.
- 35:22They are caught up with what people are doing with their own.
- 35:26And so, they sit and they talk, and they bring reports and, and
- 35:29then gossip and shoes and now slander comes and fabricated
- 35:32stories. And all of us in here, know the
- 35:35capabilities and the collateral damage that can come from a
- 35:40group of people who can sit down and say things that they
- 35:43shouldn't be saying. And Paul is warning about this
- 35:46danger, because they have nothing to do.
- 35:49They're going to do something often times.
- 35:51When you're not doing something good and idleness, simply means
- 35:54avoiding to do work. When you're avoiding genuine
- 35:58responsibility, god-given conduct, you're going to embrace
- 36:02other other vices. And so, he wants to avoid this
- 36:05problem because he knows the power of this in a negative
- 36:08sense in the congregation. So, you know, what Paul solution
- 36:11is you ready for this? It's not, well, they better be
- 36:13praying and fasting. Well, if they're not given the
- 36:15Themselves to spiritual discipline if they're not called
- 36:18to celibacy. If they don't have the gift of
- 36:19singleness verse 14 is a solution.
- 36:22So I would have younger widows marry Bear, children manage
- 36:27their households and give the adversary no occasion for
- 36:31slander. And when he tells Pastor Tim to
- 36:34do Pastor Tim, tell the young ladies to engage in pursuing and
- 36:41finding a spouse. Here's the translation, it's
- 36:48very difficult for Satan. To work through you when you're
- 36:52worn out serving your husband and your children.
- 36:57It's very difficult, you give no occasion to him, and you might
- 36:59be thinking, well, I know some woman who can still slander and
- 37:03gossip and they have a husband and they have plenty of kids.
- 37:07Can I tell you something? Even that, that may be the case,
- 37:09they're doing it wrong. They're doing it wrong.
- 37:13Because clearly, they're not finding satisfaction and
- 37:15discipling their children and serving their husband.
- 37:17If they still have time to go from house to house to how
- 37:20they're doing it wrong. And so look at the preventive,
- 37:26wisdom here. They need to get busy, they need
- 37:31to get an alignment with a high call of being a wife.
- 37:34And if they can't have God Wills to being a mother, let them in.
- 37:38Let them get caught up in that. So that Satan can see.
- 37:42I can't deal with this person's already fulfilling what God's
- 37:44call them to do. They're managing the household.
- 37:47They're, they're they're serving their family and so he moves on
- 37:51and here's the point. It's a principle that a healthy
- 37:54work ethic provides an extra layer of protection.
- 37:58Ian on the shield of our sanctification, when we are
- 38:03resisting, the suggestions of the enemy.
- 38:06But listen, when we do not have that work ethic, I'm not talking
- 38:10about Ministry, I'm talking about life, making a living
- 38:14endeavoring to do things to to to make your mind at work.
- 38:18Your hands at work for the glory of God, you weaken.
- 38:23Your ability to resist and you invite some overpowering ideas
- 38:30that can make you captive to the enemy and actually use it as a
- 38:33tool to hurt the church and in David's case, can I tell you
- 38:36something? It would have been much, much
- 38:37harder for him to look and behold at a naked woman.
- 38:41If his eyes were at War, If his eyes were, if he was focusing on
- 38:46the ammonites and strategizing with his men, this would never
- 38:50have occurred. And so I get very concerned when
- 38:55I learn of people who have nothing going on in their lives
- 38:58because something is about to occur, it just needs a little
- 39:02bit of time. This is true for men.
- 39:05This is true for women. Get busy serving God, get busy.
- 39:09Doing what you're called to do as a Christian in society.
- 39:15Too much free time is not good time.
- 39:17Leisure is good. Only to strengthen to go back
- 39:20and do what God's called you to do.
- 39:22But if you're wondering and just bouncing around in life, you're
- 39:26a liability, a failure to conquer idleness.
- 39:30Actually. Contributed to this awful
- 39:33decision, A failure to deal with unrestrained passions, early on
- 39:39number to a failure, to be diligent in the duties that God
- 39:43has called you to do. Number three, a failure to
- 39:46conquer idleness. Number for the second part of
- 39:50verse 2. It happened late one afternoon
- 39:56when David arose from his couch and was walking on the roof of
- 39:59the King's house that he saw from the roof, a woman bathing
- 40:04and the woman was very beautiful Here's David we have no idea
- 40:10what he's doing on his roof. I know one thing he's bored.
- 40:14And he's probably surveying the city.
- 40:15Remember he's a king, he's at the top of the hill.
- 40:17He has a few, unlike anybody else and as his eyes are
- 40:21scrolling left to right? And up to down in his vision,
- 40:25comes what a woman bathing. And the impression that we get
- 40:30here is not that he sees her and turns away, but that he's Caesar
- 40:35and he stops. And he begins to study her and
- 40:40he begins to consider her and the conclusion in his mind is I
- 40:43want her. I want her. and so, what we
- 40:47learn here is that these Irresponsible.
- 40:54Eyes, turn into thoughts and those thoughts eventually
- 40:58morphed into a planned action get her for me.
- 41:04So it begins with a look, there's a knot.
- 41:07And David himself, knew of the power of indulging in that,
- 41:13which is worthless Through the Windows of these eyes, and he
- 41:17failed to take his own advice. And I want to show you how David
- 41:22literally pens what he should have done.
- 41:26But he fails to do this is a beautiful reference to right in
- 41:30your Bible. If you do right in your Bible,
- 41:32right beside 2nd Samuel, 12, it's in Psalm 101 verse to Psalm
- 41:36101. Verse 2 and verse 3, this is
- 41:39like heartbreaking to know that David wrote, this under the
- 41:43inspiration of the Holy Spirit and at some point because he had
- 41:48an open-door failed to remember what it meant for him.
- 41:52Psalm 101 verse 2. Here's what David writes.
- 41:58I will ponder the way that is blameless.
- 42:01Oh, when will you come to me? Just pause it.
- 42:03That's a man. Who's hungry after God.
- 42:06Oh, when will you come to me? Lord, when will you make
- 42:08yourself known? This is a man who is, who is in
- 42:11the presence of God, but notice what he says, I will walk with
- 42:16Integrity of heart within where My house.
- 42:22I will walk with Integrity of heart within my house.
- 42:25Now, look at verse 3. I will not set before my eyes.
- 42:30Anything that is worthless? Do you see the connection that
- 42:34David is making here? There is a link between having a
- 42:38heart of integrity and the discipline of not setting
- 42:43worthless things before your eyes.
- 42:49And we can all agree that what you put in this mouth in terms
- 42:52of food will inevitably have an effect on the health of your
- 42:57body. And as that is digested and your
- 43:01stomach distributes, It Whatever substance goes in there, whether
- 43:05it's good or bad. It's going to, it's going to
- 43:07affect you one way or another. And in the same way a major
- 43:14contribution to our spiritual health, is what we indulge in
- 43:19with our eyes. What you allow your eyes to
- 43:22Feast on will have a great effect on the overall spiritual
- 43:27condition of your pursuit of Holiness.
- 43:30Holiness, is simply your spiritual health.
- 43:35And David here, knew that listen are unassisted imaginations, are
- 43:41enough trouble on their own. To add to that, visual
- 43:45stimulation will guarantee a strengthening to that, which we
- 43:50must silence and subdue. And so, when this man says, I
- 43:56will walk with Integrity of heart, what he had in mind was
- 43:59in the privacy of my home. I will not even give myself to
- 44:03looking at that which will harm this integrity.
- 44:07And I want to say something very serious, but I feel like this is
- 44:10lacking much of the sexual bondage that people are in
- 44:14today, began with a prolonged look Much of the sexual bondage
- 44:20that people in our today, began with a prolonged look, would it
- 44:23be a shock to you for for me to say?
- 44:27That a person who looked at one inappropriate Instagram, post
- 44:31long enough, LED them into daily / nog, Rafi exposure. and
- 44:38because of that free filth in enlarged and appetite where that
- 44:42same person where they started with one Instagram, post are now
- 44:46paying for a prostitute, too fat to satisfy their fantasies It's
- 44:51real, it's real. And we were living in an evil
- 44:55age that has no shame in exposing things, to grip your
- 44:59mind, burn those images there, so that you have nowhere to run.
- 45:07The first look, nobody can escape the second one.
- 45:10The third one is our responsibility.
- 45:13And it's hard to imagine, but remember what I just said there,
- 45:17how one social media posts can lead to picking up somebody?
- 45:20That you don't even know if you think that's far-fetched.
- 45:23Remember that the psalmist of Israel and the privacy of his
- 45:26balcony from this time, is actually going to now have a
- 45:30murderous Scandal on his reputation.
- 45:34This is not an extreme example. This can happen and just because
- 45:39it's not in the history books for all to see it happens more
- 45:43often than you can imagine. So, here's what I want to say,
- 45:47and it's important that if you and I are a people who can't
- 45:50control these eyes, then you will not be able to control your
- 45:54body. It starts with the eyes.
- 46:00If like job, you don't make a covenant with these eyes where
- 46:03these eyes go, what they allow, what they entertain will
- 46:07eventually guide your body. And that's what we see here with
- 46:11this man and that may seem like a hopeless message and in the
- 46:15age of indecency, but don't let unbelief.
- 46:19Don't let on believe in. Don't let what happened?
- 46:21What's happening? The culture to crush your hope,
- 46:24remember, in that same passage that we read.
- 46:28In 1st Thessalonians, rather 4:8 that whole chapter at least the
- 46:33first part of the chapter deals with the subject matter at hand
- 46:37and and Paul ends his argument. He ends his charge by the Holy
- 46:42Spirit by telling the people of this church, listen therefore
- 46:47whoever disregards this and what's he saying is that if you
- 46:50read the prior versus, he's calling him to Holiness in the
- 46:53area of sexual immorality, and he ends his thought by saying,
- 46:57whoever disregards, this disregards, not man, but God,
- 47:01but God who gives his holy spirit to you.
- 47:06Now, some have limited that verse to say.
- 47:09Yeah, if you don't listen to Paul standards for sexuality,
- 47:11you're not really ignoring Paul, you're ignoring God true but
- 47:15there's there's hope in this. What he's saying is listen,
- 47:19don't let the standard of the world or your brothers and
- 47:23sisters who are not taking their Holiness, seriously.
- 47:25Don't let that determine the potential Purity that you can
- 47:29walk in because the instructions that I'm giving you I'm also
- 47:33giving you the resource that's able to make those things.
- 47:36Own the Holy Spirit. Don't disregard this, don't not
- 47:40believe this, don't just brush it off.
- 47:42Don't just wallow in your failure, embrace the standard,
- 47:46believe it and realize that the Holy Spirit.
- 47:49Now is here to empower you to walk in it.
- 47:53So that's the hope that we have as Christians that we can
- 47:56actually know a Grace that comes from Heaven, to be able to walk
- 48:01in this protection and preservation for True pleasure
- 48:03in God in the design that he has for our sexuality.
- 48:07So Paul says, don't disregard this because by disregarding
- 48:10this, you're actually also pushing away.
- 48:13The very power that can help you realize it.
- 48:17We have a supernatural faith and we have to believe it before we
- 48:21can actually experience it. So that's the fourth failure.
- 48:26The fourth failure is the failure to realize the danger of
- 48:30a prolonged look and now we come to the final failure.
- 48:37The final failure is in verse 3. And David sent and inquired
- 48:44about the woman. And one said, is not this
- 48:49Bathsheba the daughter of Al. I am the wife of Uriah, the
- 48:55hittite, The fifth and final failure, do not limited to these
- 49:00things. Is the failure to take heed to
- 49:05God's warnings. The failure to take heed.
- 49:10To God's warnings. We don't know how long it was
- 49:13before David called his servants to inquire about this mysterious
- 49:16woman that enticed him. But when the news came back, his
- 49:22men were successful in providing a detailed report of her
- 49:26identity. And some say, well this is David
- 49:30finding out if she was single so he can just add him to the
- 49:33roster of his Harem and just another number with the others.
- 49:37We've lost count of how many wives he had.
- 49:40As though, that is a justifiable reason.
- 49:46But what is really stunning? Is that what he found out about
- 49:50this woman should have repelled him.
- 49:53He's already gone too far but this should have stopped him in
- 49:58his tracks when he realized who her father was and he realized
- 50:04who, her husband was the fact that she had a husband.
- 50:09First Corinthians, 10:13, we are promised.
- 50:13That in all and in every Temptation, God will provide a
- 50:17way of Escape. What that means is that you can
- 50:23never ever justify a sin by saying that it was too powerful.
- 50:29To turn away from in Temptation. God has supplied us everything
- 50:36that we need to be able to endure it, right.
- 50:39It doesn't say immediate ejection from it but to endure
- 50:43it and then eventually Escape it.
- 50:45God has given us everything that we need.
- 50:48So part of that is being in preparation for that temptation
- 50:51to come watch and pray. Lest you fall into temptation
- 50:54but you know, God is so good. God is so good that he often
- 50:59even even warns us in creative ways while we are being tempted.
- 51:04While we are being tempted. And one example there are many
- 51:08in the scriptures, let me give you one.
- 51:10Remember when I'm Alec took Abraham's wife And Abraham was
- 51:16telling everybody. He's use my sister hey, he
- 51:20doesn't want to be killed, his wife is beautiful.
- 51:22I mean, she must have been beautiful.
- 51:23She was, she was called beautiful and her older older
- 51:26years. And this King takes her.
- 51:29He puts her in his bed and then God visits him in Genesis 20 in
- 51:33a dream. And here's the paraphrase.
- 51:35You're a dead, man. You're a dead, man.
- 51:38Because you took somebody's wife.
- 51:42And I am Alec is like, I didn't know.
- 51:44He told me, he told me, it was a sister.
- 51:47And God says, yes, I know that you did this out of a place of
- 51:50not knowing what was going on, but I'm giving you a warning.
- 51:53If you don't give her back, you're finished and he does he
- 51:56repents, right? So God can at times, grab our
- 52:02attention attention, even in the pursuit even in the plot of
- 52:06doing that, which is wrong. Here's the problem.
- 52:10Many people don't pay attention. You know, like a bible study on
- 52:15a Friday night. Right.
- 52:20And we just happen to fall on this, I don't know what's going
- 52:22on in your personal life. God knows, you don't need to
- 52:26tell me even but if you know that you're heading towards a
- 52:29path, you realize that you are failing in the areas that were
- 52:33just mentioned. Here's God, giving you a way
- 52:36out. You know, what the way out was
- 52:38for David. Hey, they could have just said
- 52:42this is Bathsheba know. They said, this is Bathsheba the
- 52:45daughter of a lion that doesn't mean much until you realize that
- 52:49bathsheba's father'll. I am was the son of a man named
- 52:53a heath offal. Who is David's favorite
- 52:58counselor in his Administrative Office. more than that, he
- 53:03realizes that he He's inquiring about a woman who's married to
- 53:08one of his mighty men? You are is just not one soldier.
- 53:11Uriah is, in that list of Mighty Men.
- 53:15At the end of second Samuel. You're going to see it.
- 53:16His name is, there engraved among the Great.
- 53:22And that should have startled him.
- 53:26You know what registered in his mind when he heard this?
- 53:29Oh good. Her husband isn't home.
- 53:33That's what he registered. And when I look at this, I think
- 53:39of a new testament principle, you heard from first
- 53:41Thessalonians 48. But look at Paul and what he
- 53:45says to encourage Holiness in this area in 1st Thessalonians,
- 53:494 6. I want you to see this because
- 53:52it's profound He's pleading with his brothers.
- 53:58Listen, learn to control your own body.
- 54:01And Holiness, don't be like the Gentiles who do not know God and
- 54:04are given over to their passions.
- 54:06Then he says this in verse 6, That no one transgress and wrong
- 54:11his brother. What do you mean by that?
- 54:16And no one, transgress and wrong his brother in this matter
- 54:20because the Lord is an Avenger and all these things.
- 54:23As we told you beforehand and solemnly, warned you.
- 54:27By the way, he's not talking to non-believers, he's talking to
- 54:29Christians. That no one transgress and
- 54:33wrong. His brother.
- 54:33I believe what Paul is saying in part here, is that when a man
- 54:37specifically considers another man's wife or when a woman
- 54:42considers, another woman's husband.
- 54:46That. The engagement of that sin
- 54:50between two, people does not just affect those two people.
- 54:55What Paul is saying here is, Hey listen, don't wrong your
- 54:59brother. In this meaning, I believe in
- 55:01part, not just the person that you were sitting with but the
- 55:04person that, that person belongs to Do you realize?
- 55:11Yes, you Christian in the church.
- 55:12That's somebody's daughter. Do you realize that?
- 55:16That's somebody's husband. Do you realize that sexual sin?
- 55:23Always affects a community. Always.
- 55:29When it's exposed, it hurts a lot of people, it hurts.
- 55:32A lot of people. I'll give you proof of that.
- 55:35How do you feel when you hear of a church leader falling into
- 55:37sin? It hurts.
- 55:39Doesn't it? The people are hurting the
- 55:41fellow Elders. Are hurting.
- 55:43Everybody's hurting everybody who has a soft heart does.
- 55:47At least And here's what Paul is saying because this is how
- 55:51pathetic we can become in our own pursuit of Holiness.
- 55:54If you have no care about that person that you're wrong.
- 55:57And would you at least have some kind of a thought for the person
- 56:00that might be hurting. Who belongs to that individual?
- 56:05Who is in Covenant, with that individual.
- 56:08That's not just limited to marry people.
- 56:09You single. People hear me out.
- 56:11When you're considering somebody else, who you're not married to
- 56:13do you realize that you are violating a potential Covenant,
- 56:18that is to come? They realize that that person is
- 56:22gonna have a husband. One day that person is going to
- 56:24have a wife. One day, don't wrong.
- 56:26That future brother. Don't wrong that future sister
- 56:30because you want a short-lived fantasy to be fulfilled.
- 56:36Realize that this goes beyond you, it goes beyond that
- 56:38individual that you're conspiring with and you're being
- 56:40secretive with. There are others who are going
- 56:42to be affected by this. You know what David should have
- 56:44thought, how could I do this to? I felt full How could I break
- 56:49his heart? How can I?
- 56:52I'm such a fool. Uriah is wife.
- 56:57So shame, then he should have fell on his face and quoted.
- 57:01Psalm 101 verse two and three again.
- 57:03Lord, I want I want to have integrity in my heart within my
- 57:07house. Again, help me never ever to set
- 57:09my eyes on that which is worthless that would have been a
- 57:12glorious glorious ending to this chapter.
- 57:15But unfortunately, He fetches for her.
- 57:22A failure to take heed to God's warnings.
- 57:28It's sad. It's sad to realize how people
- 57:31can hear God. Who's putting obstacles in their
- 57:35paths. Because they're so empty inside
- 57:41because they've been so deceived by their own flesh that they
- 57:45bulldoze through the warning signs.
- 57:48And say, I want what I set my eyes on I wish David did here
- 57:55what he did with those Mighty Men Who heard him say, while he
- 57:59was in war. Oh, that somebody would get me.
- 58:05Water from that. Well, in Bethlehem, by the gate,
- 58:11And a few of them looked at each other and said, what do you
- 58:13think? I love David.
- 58:15I love him too. Let's do it.
- 58:17And they go through the Garrison of the Philistines and they
- 58:19scooped up. Some kind of container filled
- 58:23with that Hometown Water that I'm sure David drank from.
- 58:26So at so many points in his earlier years and they come back
- 58:29to Dave and they say, here, David, we got you the water that
- 58:33you asked for And David and second Samuel, 23:17 second,
- 58:40Samuel, 23:17 said, far, be it from me.
- 58:44Oh, Lord, that I should do this. Shall I drink the blood of the
- 58:48men who went at the risk of their lives.
- 58:51Therefore, he would not drink it, these things, the three
- 58:54Mighty Men did, And he pours out that water.
- 59:01I wish you did that with his lust.
- 59:03When you realize how can I drink from somebody else's fountain?
- 59:07That's not my wife. I will not do it.
- 59:12I will not say cheap. This sinful impulse.
- 59:17I pour it out and I turn away from it.
- 59:22If you want to know when a pleasure, any kind of pleasure,
- 59:24no matter how much it overtakes you and convinces, you any
- 59:27pleasure that is illegitimate, is a pleasure that dishonors
- 59:32somebody else in any way. Any pleasure that dishonors
- 59:38somebody else is illegal. Never forget that.
- 59:43If it harm somebody degrades them.
- 59:50No Crossing pour it out, and turn away five failures on this
- 59:56Bible study. I know, it's a very heavy one.
- 1:00:00But what's heavier is to not hear about it.
- 1:00:03And to experience the consequences of it, So we come
- 1:00:07to the concluding verses in verse 4 and 5, and we'll end
- 1:00:09here. So, David sent Messengers and
- 1:00:12took her and she came to him and lay with her, he lay with her.
- 1:00:15Now, she'd been purifying herself from her uncleanness, so
- 1:00:18brother. And are you asking about this
- 1:00:20and in levitical law, when a woman was undergoing her monthly
- 1:00:25flow, there was a protocol for her to regain a clean status so
- 1:00:32to speak. And we don't have the time to
- 1:00:33explore that in detail. And so there was a time of
- 1:00:36refraining from intercourse for a certain amount of Of days
- 1:00:41after that, after that time. And so what we were being told
- 1:00:46here also is that she just had that time of the month.
- 1:00:52She now is free to do what she can do.
- 1:00:57And the indication here is to prepare us for verse 5, that
- 1:01:03bathsheba's pregnancy is surely from David, not from her
- 1:01:06husband. So it's preparing us to say.
- 1:01:10Nothing happened before. What's what's about to
- 1:01:13transpire? Here is a direct result of an
- 1:01:18illegitimate intercourse. But there's something else you
- 1:01:21want. I thought about it and it's this
- 1:01:23Bathsheba was being faithful in observing the ceremonial law was
- 1:01:26scheana and some even say that the bath that she was taking was
- 1:01:30part of that observance. I don't know, it doesn't say but
- 1:01:34so here's what's interesting. This woman is willing to adhere
- 1:01:38to the ceremonial law, but when you read about it she shows no
- 1:01:43hesitation To defiling herself with a man that's not her
- 1:01:47husband. Isn't that strange isn't that
- 1:01:49strange? It's incredible, because it's a
- 1:01:54picture of a faulty Holiness where we get to pick and choose
- 1:01:57what we want to obey, what we don't want to be, or you can
- 1:02:00even say it's it's this deception where well, I've done
- 1:02:03this for the Lord. So so I can do this and he'll he
- 1:02:06won't mind, right? It reminds me of the Pharisees
- 1:02:10when they arrest Jesus and it says there in John that they
- 1:02:13refused to go into Pilots headquarters less, they defiled
- 1:02:16themselves before the Passover feast and here they are plotting
- 1:02:20to kill an innocent, man. Oh, you don't want to defile
- 1:02:23yourself so that you can eat of the feast.
- 1:02:24But you're going to actually have a man crucified for doing
- 1:02:27nothing like it PHA crasy, produces Twisted conduct, it's
- 1:02:33scary. And the people who are in, it
- 1:02:36are convinced that it's right. So, here's baths.
- 1:02:38But yeah, I'm ceremonially clean.
- 1:02:41But now she's about to come into a man's room that that is going
- 1:02:45to defile her morally. Picking and choosing what you
- 1:02:50think is, right? Or what you think is wrong, what
- 1:02:51you think is, okay? We that's just that's just
- 1:02:53dangerous. Verse 5, we read and the woman
- 1:02:58can see, then she sent and told David, I am pregnant before
- 1:03:01that, we reach, she just returned home.
- 1:03:04Like it seemed like things are just going to go on.
- 1:03:06As normal now Bathsheba goes home.
- 1:03:08David stays at home, A one night stand.
- 1:03:13That's it. We just blow off some steam and
- 1:03:16nothing's going to happen. And we read.
- 1:03:21In fact, something does happen. And this is just the start. but
- 1:03:27before we end tonight, but back at verse one, in the spring of
- 1:03:31the year, the time, when the Kings, go out to battle, David
- 1:03:33sent joab and his servants with him and all Israel and they
- 1:03:36ravaged the ammonites This war is a continuation of chapter 10.
- 1:03:42Remember the ammonites were the ones who harass David's
- 1:03:44ambassadors. And more than that, they started
- 1:03:48a war. They hired the syrians and they
- 1:03:50said, let who does this David think that he is?
- 1:03:53He thinks he can spy on me, totally wrong assessment.
- 1:03:56They try to go to war job and his men show up the syrians,
- 1:03:59flee that I manage realize it, and it says that they Retreat
- 1:04:02back to their City, they closed the door and they hold on for
- 1:04:06dear life. Hoping that David will never
- 1:04:07show his face. Face again.
- 1:04:10And so, here are these men who sinned against David and time
- 1:04:15goes on thinking that David forgot.
- 1:04:19And then we read in the spring of the Year, few months go by
- 1:04:26and what are we read? David, make sure is that they
- 1:04:28are going to pay the price for what they did.
- 1:04:34And he's going to ravage them. And here's the thing that I take
- 1:04:39from this that unfortunately you have Sinners who are like the
- 1:04:43ammonites who think that and interpret God's momentary
- 1:04:46silence as either forgetfulness or like-mindedness.
- 1:04:51And so his silence seems to be approval.
- 1:04:53So they continue and they think that God has not registered what
- 1:04:56they have done. And unfortunately, the children
- 1:04:59of God think the same way that just because there is an
- 1:05:02immediate consequence than surely, it's not that big of a
- 1:05:05deal and they fail to realize that God loves you too much to
- 1:05:09not discipline you in one way or another.
- 1:05:13And what the ammonites are about to learn about David is what
- 1:05:17David and the remainder of this chapter and the next chapter is
- 1:05:23going to learn about God. That unrepentant sin will never
- 1:05:29be ignored by God. It won't.
- 1:05:35There is a chilling verse that we will get to maybe in a week
- 1:05:40or two. Look at the last verse.
- 1:05:43The last part of the last verse but the thing that David had
- 1:05:47done displeased the Lord that like when I I almost get chills
- 1:05:52whenever I read that because you have this long chapter of
- 1:05:56David's little schemes and his cover-up plans and all that
- 1:05:59stuff. And when I read that verse, you
- 1:06:00know what I sense God was watching the whole time.
- 1:06:05God was watching the whole time and the time would come because
- 1:06:09David concealed his transgression instead of
- 1:06:12confessing and forsaking it, because of his concealment, a
- 1:06:16prophet is going to come. Just like, David came at one
- 1:06:19point in the spring and says, listen you can't get away with
- 1:06:23what you did. Can't get away with what he did.
- 1:06:28So, my brother, my sister, I don't know where you're at
- 1:06:30tonight. I don't, God knows, I hope
- 1:06:32you're doing well in the Lord. I hope you're a strong.
- 1:06:35I hope that these failures are not present in your life, but if
- 1:06:38they are, this is the chance to take heed to God's gentle
- 1:06:42warning to saying, don't don't do it.
- 1:06:46And realize the danger ahead of time.
- 1:06:49Realize that the failure to deal with unrestrained.
- 1:06:52Passions will serve as a sewing. And realized that a failure to
- 1:06:59be diligent in your duty for the Lord opens up a foothold for
- 1:07:03Temptation. And realize that if you don't
- 1:07:05conquer idleness, some kind of sin will conquer.
- 1:07:08You believe that if you fail in believing that a prolonged look
- 1:07:15can actually open up to a thought pattern that can
- 1:07:17actually evolve into a plan action, believe that if you
- 1:07:21don't nip it there, at the site of the thing that it can, it can
- 1:07:25transform it to something that will Monstrous.
- 1:07:30And realize that a failure to take heed to God's warnings.
- 1:07:36God can't do anything else. More than that.
- 1:07:41He will now override your will if you want to go, he'll let you
- 1:07:44go. But if you're truly a child of
- 1:07:47God, he will do something about it when you go.
- 1:07:51Let's pray. Lord.
- 1:08:15We thank you for tonight's Bible study.
- 1:08:22We thank you that your word before us today.
- 1:08:30Was understood and its purpose and design.
- 1:08:35And Lord, we just ask. That in this place, as a result
- 1:08:40of this Bible study, new levels of Victory will be realized.
- 1:08:48But we pray for the grace to retain the elements that we
- 1:08:51have. Explored in these verses and
- 1:08:56that they would register in US deeply.
- 1:09:02And we asked, oh God, that you would be worshipped tonight in a
- 1:09:05special way. For how you've spoken to us.
- 1:09:10Protect our marriages, protect our household, protect us in an
- 1:09:15age of disgrace. And Lord we pray Proverbs 27 7
- 1:09:23that we would all be so full in you that we would loathe the
- 1:09:27honey of this life. The bitter things that try to
- 1:09:31persuade us that will fill us, Lord help us detect it, not just
- 1:09:35with head knowledge but with experiential knowledge, I am
- 1:09:39satisfied in God. I am filled with the joy of the
- 1:09:43Lord. I have fellowship with the king,
- 1:09:48I will not cheap in myself to something that will ultimately
- 1:09:52bite back and disgrace me in the Lord that I serve.
- 1:09:55O Lord, may that be the heights that we reach because of you and
- 1:10:00your promises for those who hunger and thirst for
- 1:10:03righteousness. They shall be filled.
- 1:10:06So fill us a fresh. Let Faith arise that there is
- 1:10:10more pleasure in your presence than what pornography has to
- 1:10:14offer. When loose Partners have to
- 1:10:16offer than what external beauty has to offer, your presence is
- 1:10:21more than enough, you are able to conquer our wandering hearts.
- 1:10:27And so we just pray that we would know that in a real way
- 1:10:30tonight. In Jesus name, we pray.
- 1:10:33Amen. Amen.
- 1:10:35Let's stand and worship as we close sing to the Lord before
- 1:10:38you head on home.
