• 1:35
Speaker 1: Can you hear us?
• 1:36
  Speaker 1: Hello America.
• 1:37
Speaker 1: Loud and clear so that's that's quite an impressive Shop that's going on back there.
• 1:45
Speaker 1: What shop is that?
• 1:48
Speaker 5: This is actually at our career center over here in A Leaf ISD.
• 1:51
Speaker 5: Yeah, and it's the art I think.
• 1:54
Speaker 5: I'm not exactly sure how much money they spent on it, but they spent quite a bit, we have a lot of.
• 1:59
Speaker 5: I want to say about 15 different lifts.
• 2:04
Speaker 1: Tell now it's, it's a dealership, yeah, that's what it is.
• 2:08
Speaker 1: So who do you have there?
• 2:09
Speaker 3: sitting next to you.
• 2:09
Speaker 3: You have some impressive young men there.
• 2:13
Speaker 5: So we have our students here.
• 2:14
Speaker 5: They're gonna go ahead and present themselves.
• 2:17
Speaker 6: My name is Kevin.
• 2:18
Speaker 6: I'm a senior at Elsek High School.
• 2:21
  Speaker 7: Hey.
• 2:21
Speaker 8: I'm my name is Jose.
• 2:22
Speaker 8: I'm a senior at Elsek High School as well.
• 2:26
Speaker 9: Hello, my name is Juan Pablo.
• 2:28
Speaker 9: I'm a senior at Hastings High School.
• 2:30
Speaker 1: All right, the competition right across the parking lot.
• 2:33
  Speaker 1: There you go.
• 2:33
Speaker 1: Yes, yes, I used to live out in a leaf back in the 80s, early 80s, all before you guys were born.
• 2:42
Speaker 4: Yeah, well, there's no doubt about that.
• 2:43
Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly, but yes, as a matter of fact, right down the street from where you are.
• 2:47
Speaker 1: Is that where the shop is out there at the high school?
• 2:51
Speaker 5: No, it's actually located off of Richmond and West Houston, right across street from the.
• 2:57
Speaker 5: I think it's called the West Houston oh medical center.
• 3:01
Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, I know where that is.
• 3:03
Speaker 1: Yeah, not too far from the police station out there, there you go.
• 3:06
Speaker 4: Yeah, that's the wrong way that yeah, so it kind of makes your test drives a little mellow.
• 3:11
  Speaker 1: It does.
• 3:12
  Speaker 1: It does that.
• 3:12
Speaker 1: So, julian, why don't you explain to everybody what this facility is in the Marshall Center for advanced careers?
• 3:22
Speaker 1: Tell us about it, give us a little overview here.
• 3:26
Speaker 5: This is little overview, so I mean, as far as how it is, it's, it's state-of-the-art.
• 3:32
Speaker 5: Of course, it almost kind of looks like a college.
• 3:33
Speaker 5: You have a whole bunch of other different Trades that are going to include culinary, they're going to include architect, they're also going to have medical field, they're going to have robotics, a veterinary, they're going to have construction, welding and a whole bunch of other things that I'm probably not going to, I'm probably not going to be able to mention all the way, but yeah, it's huge.
• 3:58
Speaker 5: It almost looks like.
• 3:59
Speaker 5: I'm not sure if y'all travel to the what is it called?
• 4:04
  Speaker 5: San Jacinto College?
• 4:05
Speaker 5: Yes, yes, we have a mind on that in a way.
• 4:08
Speaker 1: Yes, oh, very good.
• 4:09
Speaker 1: Well, whose idea was to put this together?
• 4:12
Speaker 1: Because I don't know of a high school that's got this kind of facility.
• 4:16
Speaker 5: Yeah and that that actually is teaching these kids at the high school level, at this level, yeah, To be honest, I got on board about I want to say about six years ago, and they had built it before I got here.
• 4:34
Speaker 5: So I'm not 100% sure, but whoever I think Mr Chambers was here back then.
• 4:40
Speaker 5: I'm not sure if he was the one who thought of the idea or how exactly it happened, but for the most part, I'm very appreciative because I'm actually a high school A Lee Hastings graduate as well, so I wish it would have had this back in my day.
• 4:56
Speaker 5: I guess you could say I graduated in 2010 and this center was built in 2018.
• 5:01
Speaker 4: So what's your automotive background, Julian?
• 5:04
Speaker 5: My automotive background is going to be.
• 5:06
Speaker 5: I actually started in 10th grade in A Lee Hastings High School.
• 5:10
Speaker 5: I really did not know what I wanted to do at that point and I ended up choosing automotive because of course that was a way of making money and making a living of course.
• 5:20
Speaker 5: So at my 11th grade year I actually earned an internship at Mosse Nissan off of KD Freeway and that kind of showed me a little bit about what I was going to be exposed to.
• 5:34
Speaker 5: So what I ended up doing was you know what?
• 5:36
Speaker 5: I'm going to go ahead and pursue this career and I ended up working for Nissan as an intern and then, after I graduated, they ended up hiring me full time.
• 5:44
Speaker 5: So I worked there for about nine years and after working there for about nine years I furthered my career and I went to Seoul Cadillac right across the street and worked there for about six months.
• 5:57
Speaker 5: After that six month period I had a phone call from Mr Lozano and Mr Reddow, which were my instructors here at A Lee Fiesty, and they gave me an opportunity of a lifetime.
• 6:09
Speaker 5: I think I really enjoy working with these kids and, of course, making them kind of reaching you high, I guess you could say.
• 6:19
  Speaker 3: Congratulations to you.
• 6:21
Speaker 1: Is this a three or four year course that you have offered out there?
• 6:26
Speaker 5: It's going to be a four year course.
• 6:27
Speaker 5: They start off as freshmen, ninth graders.
• 6:30
  Speaker 4: Wow sweet.
• 6:31
Speaker 4: Is there a co-op aspect of it, where they get associated with a shop, be it a dealership or an independent shop, where they'll co-op some of their time there?
• 6:42
Speaker 5: Yeah, so they do have like little internships, but they're going to be for seniors only and actually these guys got an internship because of this competition that we were in at Sterling McCall Nissan.
• 6:54
  Speaker 1: What's a competition?
• 6:55
Speaker 1: Let's hear about that.
• 6:56
  Speaker 5: Okay.
• 6:57
Speaker 5: So this competition pretty much just tested their skills and abilities and how to look up information using all data.
• 7:03
Speaker 5: They also had things that they had to work on that included kind of electrical circuits, diagnosing electrical circuits.
• 7:13
Speaker 5: They also had, I believe, tire pressure monitoring systems that they had to see and, of course, work on as well.
• 7:21
Speaker 5: They also had, I want to say, what was it?
• 7:24
Speaker 5: Dtc scanners, I believe.
• 7:26
Speaker 5: Dtc scanners yes, I think we're for their appropriate dealership.
• 7:32
Speaker 5: So I think there was multiple dealerships that sponsored different students and so our dealership.
• 7:37
Speaker 5: We were very fortunate to have Nissan dealership and, of course, since my background is also in Nissan, kind of helped them out a little bit.
• 7:43
Speaker 3: I want to hear from some of the other panel guests there on what they think.
• 7:50
  Speaker 8: Anybody.
• 7:50
Speaker 8: So, yeah, we got this great opportunity to work at Nissan and also to attend this competition and just basically show off our skills that we learned in the career center.
• 8:07
Speaker 4: So when you're at the dealership you're talking, and I'm assuming it was Sterling McCall.
• 8:12
Speaker 4: Is that where you guys are interning?
• 8:15
Speaker 8: Yes, it's interning at Nissan.
• 8:17
Speaker 4: So when you're there at the dealership, are you interning with a line technician a level technician and you're acting as his apprentice so you can get a little mentorship from him, or do they give you individual responsibilities, that you're standalone working on cars?
• 8:36
Speaker 8: Yes, so the shop foreman he assigns us to one technician and it's different every day that he assigns us to a different technician and basically we just work with them on the jobs that they get, so that we can learn how to document it and how to diagnose, and basically do the repair yeah.
• 9:04
Speaker 4: Good for you because I know in the dealership world, documentation is the key, because documentation is what keeps them from getting charged back in an audit and the information you put on paper is critical in your diagnostic process of the complaint cause and correction all the way to completion.
• 9:25
Speaker 4: And that information not only goes back to the factory warranty system but it's also provided to the customer to understand what they spent their $1,000 on or whatever amount of money they spent Is.
• 9:39
Speaker 4: That's very critical, so I'm glad to see that that's part of your education.
• 9:44
Speaker 3: To Conrad's point, there's more than just the mechanical end of it in a dealership.
• 9:47
  Speaker 3: There's finance, there's parts, there's operations.
• 9:50
Speaker 3: There's so many avenues that you can step into that.
• 9:54
  Speaker 3: I think that's great.
• 9:55
Speaker 7: So do you, kevin?
• 9:57
Speaker 7: Do you get to expand your view beyond just working with the technicians into some of those other aspects of a dealership?
• 10:06
Speaker 6: Yes, we can also.
• 10:08
Speaker 6: We walk into parts and we also talk to service managers when they bring in a vehicle and we have to talk to the customer but we don't know the full situation of it, so we have to talk to the service manager to acquire more information on the vehicle.
• 10:23
Speaker 4: Yeah, because it's beyond just you getting the car.
• 10:28
Speaker 4: The service advisor has to communicate effectively what the customer's concern is to help you in the diagnostic process.
• 10:36
Speaker 4: So you know that communications bi-directional, it's got to make sure everybody's communicating effectively to help you fix the car correctly.
• 10:45
Speaker 4: So is your plan, the three students?
• 10:48
Speaker 4: Is your plan to continue to go to work at Sterling McCall or are you looking at any other brands besides that?
• 10:56
Speaker 8: Yes, well, I'm planning on continuing my work in there because I really like the environment that Sterling, mccall and Eson provides.
• 11:08
Speaker 4: They have an air conditioned shop.
• 11:10
Speaker 9: Yes, there you go, that's all you need.
• 11:13
  Speaker 4: Yeah, that's a huge difference.
• 11:15
Speaker 1: So, Julian, I have to ask you do the students have a regular curriculum that they have to follow and make passing grades on to be in this program?
• 11:28
Speaker 9: We have a curriculum.
• 11:29
Speaker 7: Yeah, Well, juan, you haven't said too much, so why don't?
• 11:34
Speaker 7: You say that yeah, why don't you answer?
• 11:36
Speaker 9: Yeah, so on top of this we also have our core classes at our main campus and so be able to be eligible our freshman year here, we must have passing grades at our home campus on all our core classes.
• 11:48
Speaker 9: So once we choose our endorsement at home campus, we're put here into like awaiting this per se, and then they look at our grades and all that and then if they see us fit to come over here, they'll choose us and we'll start coming over here.
• 12:03
Speaker 1: Okay, so my question to you is I don't even know what the curriculum is anymore, but I would imagine that, going into your freshman year there, that you have had some sort of computer experience, perhaps in middle school, have you?
• 12:20
Speaker 9: Yes, so I think most of us take on our freshman year.
• 12:24
Speaker 1: We take the principles of introduction, tech, which is just basic computer skills, and so with that I mean, can you specialize in that aspect of your curriculum and bring that into the Marshall Center for Advanced Careers?
• 12:42
Speaker 9: Yes, Actually we also offer IT here at the center.
• 12:47
Speaker 9: So if you really like computer, you can start with introduction on principles of tech and then just keep on going through that pathway into IT here.
• 12:56
Speaker 9: And then there's different level classes.
• 13:00
  Speaker 7: So I'm guessing you're split.
• 13:02
Speaker 7: So you go to your high school for half a day or so many hours and then you come over here to the center.
• 13:08
  Speaker 9: Yep, that's how it's done.
• 13:10
Speaker 1: And so what is your schedule like?
• 13:12
Speaker 1: You go to school and get there at eight o'clock in the morning, and then at what time do you come over to the center?
• 13:17
Speaker 9: Yes, so my schedule I have my six and seven period, which start at roughly around 12.45 to one over here, six period.
• 13:25
Speaker 9: So I'm here for double block.
• 13:27
Speaker 9: So six and seven period I'm over here.
• 13:30
Speaker 1: And then after that, then you go to the dealership.
• 13:34
  Speaker 9: Yes, uh-huh.
• 13:36
Speaker 1: And how do you?
• 13:37
Speaker 5: actually that internship works as, instead of coming to class, they just check in with us and after checking in with us, they get.
• 13:44
Speaker 5: Basically, instead of doing the class here in our classroom, they're going to the shop and learning and getting pretty much that same experience.
• 13:53
Speaker 4: So, julian, you get feedback from, I'll assume, service manager, shop foreman and their assigned technician as far as their progress there at the internship, correct, yes, sir, and just to kind of see what and what they're learning, just to kind of keep everything within the curriculum.
• 14:13
  Speaker 3: You have.
• 14:13
Speaker 3: You've got some young men there.
• 14:14
Speaker 3: You got some young ladies in the class too.
• 14:17
Speaker 5: We do have a lot of young ladies and I think next year in this competition we're going to go ahead and include some young ladies, because they weren't seniors this year.
• 14:24
Speaker 5: Next year we will have them as seniors, so I'm pretty sure they're going to be top tier technicians later on in the future Fellas better watch out Now is your program?
• 14:36
  Speaker 4: is your program?
• 14:37
Speaker 4: Are you required to be NETEF certified?
• 14:41
Speaker 5: Yes, I believe we are ASC accredited and NETEF certified.
• 14:45
Speaker 4: Yeah, because I know NETEF is a pretty hard certification to get.
• 14:49
  Speaker 3: When.
• 14:49
  Speaker 2: I work for.
• 14:49
  Speaker 4: GM.
• 14:49
Speaker 4: We used to do a lot of the certifications for it.
• 14:52
Speaker 4: It's quite complex, and not just your educational value that you deliver, but also the facilities as well and the equipment that you have Now.
• 15:02
Speaker 1: let's go back, if you don't mind, to the eighth grade, before all of this.
• 15:06
Speaker 1: How did you learn about this program, to apply for it, to become into that program, when you were a freshman there?
• 15:16
Speaker 9: So in our middle schools we there's a certain specific week that we come here to the Marshall Center as a tour and we're giving a little insight on all of the little different careers that they offer and from there on we just base it on what we want to do and what interested us the most when we did the tour.
• 15:35
Speaker 1: Like we used to have career day, exactly.
• 15:38
Speaker 7: But this is happening in middle school Career center day.
• 15:41
  Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah.
• 15:43
Speaker 9: Except it's not your parents going to your school, but rather you're getting a firsthand look from the students.
• 15:49
  Speaker 4: I love it.
• 15:49
Speaker 4: So as, as seniors, you guys are coming up to about halfway through your senior year, have you already had that conversation with whoever your co-op store dealership is as far as continuation after you graduate?
• 16:09
Speaker 8: So we haven't had that talk yet but they're assuming after we graduate we are going to be offered a position over there at Nissan and they hope that we take it and continue with our education over there and they might send us to different schools for Nissan training.
• 16:33
Speaker 4: Oh, yeah, yeah, for sure.
• 16:34
Speaker 3: I'm thinking of those four right there.
• 16:37
Speaker 3: They need to do a car talk show.
• 16:38
Speaker 3: You're all set up to do it.
• 16:41
  Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah.
• 16:42
Speaker 7: Listen, Y'all you three won some of the awards and got some trophies and stuff, right?
• 16:49
Speaker 7: So is there another contest that you're going to the next level?
• 16:57
Speaker 8: Yes, so we're going to Dallas, fort Worth, to Texas Motor Speedway on December 2nd and 3rd.
• 17:06
  Speaker 7: First, and second.
• 17:07
  Speaker 7: First and second.
• 17:07
Speaker 8: First and second, yeah, and in the North North Texas Auto Mobile Dealers, which we will be representing, the only Houston team that entered to that competition.
• 17:23
Speaker 7: Well, congratulations to you guys, the three of you right.
• 17:26
Speaker 7: Thank you, thank you.
• 17:28
Speaker 1: Very good, very good.
• 17:29
Speaker 1: Well, listen, it's great to talk to you guys.
• 17:31
Speaker 1: Thanks so much for coming to school today and talking to us as a team, because that's what you are, obviously, and it's great to have you on board with us.
• 17:41
Speaker 1: And what a great program, god, I wish I'd have had that.
• 17:44
Speaker 3: Yeah, no lie, I wish I could get it now.
• 17:46
Speaker 1: Julian, thanks so much for joining us today.
• 17:48
Speaker 1: We really appreciate it.
• 17:50
Speaker 5: Thank you for having us, yeah.
• 17:52
Speaker 7: Good luck to you guys on your next congratulations.
• 17:55
Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, exactly, all right.
• 17:56
  Speaker 1: Gosh, I don't know.
• 17:58
Speaker 1: I'd love to have had that in high school.
• 18:02
Speaker 1: I'm telling you I went to Richardson Chevrolet after school every day and worked there for three they made pinstripes in the edges of cars.
• 18:08
  Speaker 1: That's right.
• 18:09
Speaker 1: Made pinstripes by buffing them into the paint.
• 18:12
  Speaker 1: I was a brilliant man.
• 18:14
Speaker 1: I'll tell you that.
• 18:15
Speaker 4: And you still are Kind of like.
• 18:16
Speaker 4: I am today A shining star, a shining star, yeah, buffing.
• 18:20
Speaker 1: Oh, don't ask me to buff a car, I will ruin your paint job just like that.
• 18:24
Speaker 1: All right, we're going to continue on with our little contest that we have amongst ourselves.
• 18:30
Speaker 1: Hemmings sold car weekly roundup.
• 18:33
Speaker 1: So I picked a few cars and this is a 1972 Chevy Chevelle with a black vinyl top on it.
• 18:41
Speaker 1: Looks like it's got some door edge trim on it.
• 18:44
Speaker 1: It looks completely stock.
• 18:46
Speaker 1: What do you think?
• 18:47
  Speaker 1: A 72, you said A 72 Chevy Chevelle.
• 18:50
Speaker 1: Now is it a six cylinder or an eight cylinder?
• 18:52
  Speaker 7: I don't know.
• 18:53
Speaker 1: It's got bumper guards on the front of it.
• 18:55
  Speaker 7: It's all there, though $6,000.
• 18:57
  Speaker 3: Oh, I'll say 18.
• 19:00
  Speaker 7: Then I'll go 21.
• 19:01
Speaker 1: All right, because the Jeff's going to win this and sold for $8,700.
• 19:06
Speaker 1: Oh, I could afford that.
• 19:08
  Speaker 1: Exactly.
• 19:09
Speaker 1: Here's one for you.
• 19:11
Speaker 1: I just had to throw this in there.
• 19:13
  Speaker 1: You ready?
• 19:13
  Speaker 1: A 1983 Plymouth Scamp.
• 19:21
Speaker 4: Is that that little pickup truck car?
• 19:23
Speaker 4: Yes, you remember the Scamp.
• 19:26
  Speaker 1: It was a.
• 19:27
  Speaker 1: Thing.
• 19:28
Speaker 4: Including the tow bill $1,200.
• 19:31
  Speaker 7: $3,000.
• 19:32
Speaker 7: No, no, no, let's go for seven.
• 19:35
  Speaker 1: Mars wins 10,000.
• 19:37
Speaker 3: Oh my gosh, they must have put a wax job on it.
• 19:40
  Speaker 1: It's unique, it's unique 83 Plymouths.
• 19:43
Speaker 1: Okay, up there you go.
• 19:44
Speaker 1: Here's one, mars, this is yours.
• 19:48
  Speaker 1: This is a country truck here, a 1950 Chevrolet 3100.
• 19:54
Speaker 1: It looks completely stock.
• 19:56
Speaker 1: It's got a fresh paint job on it.
• 19:57
Speaker 1: It's got steel wheels with hubcaps on it.
• 20:01
Speaker 1: It's even got the spare tire on that step side bed.
• 20:07
