- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Wired to Hunts Rut Fresh Radio, bringing you
- 0:05Speaker 1: the latest reports from the White Tailed Woods and now
- 0:08Speaker 1: your host, Spencer new Hearth. This is episode four ninety
- 0:17Speaker 1: Wired to Haunts Rout Fresh Radio powered by First Light,
- 0:20Speaker 1: and this week we're talking about the secondary rut. Welcome
- 0:37Speaker 1: to Wired to Haunts Rut Fresh Radio. I am Spencer
- 0:41Speaker 1: new Hearth and this week I am joined by nobody.
- 0:45Speaker 1: Whereas I would normally be joined by Tony or Mark Um,
- 0:50Speaker 1: this week I am sitting in my pickup in the
- 0:52Speaker 1: middle of nowhere in Texas, struggling to find internet or
- 0:56Speaker 1: time to make this podcast, so I'm doing it by
- 0:59Speaker 1: myself in the driver's seat of my truck. Now, if
- 1:03Speaker 1: one of those guys were here, what we would talk
- 1:06Speaker 1: about is the secondary rut. If you're not familiar, the
- 1:10Speaker 1: secondary rut is when the does who didn't get bread
- 1:13Speaker 1: in November coming to ask just the second time. This
- 1:16Speaker 1: takes place exactly one month after peak breeding, which is
- 1:21Speaker 1: early to mid December for most of the white tails range.
- 1:24Speaker 1: This is also when you have young of the year
- 1:26Speaker 1: fonds who will enter their first cycle. Now bucks know
- 1:30Speaker 1: this and they act accordingly. The secondary rut doesn't get
- 1:34Speaker 1: the same fanfare as like the o G rut, and
- 1:37Speaker 1: that's to be expected. The December rut is quite subdued
- 1:42Speaker 1: um for me, and what I've seen is that buck
- 1:45Speaker 1: movement is more like pre rut than peak rut when
- 1:49Speaker 1: you have a secondary rut happening. Rather than bucks traveling
- 1:52Speaker 1: wide open areas at midday like they do in the
- 1:54Speaker 1: best days of peak rut, you'll find them staying on
- 1:57Speaker 1: food just a bit later in the morning, or getting
- 1:59Speaker 1: none out of their beds a bit earlier in the afternoon,
- 2:03Speaker 1: like what you see during the best days of pre rut.
- 2:06Speaker 1: Secondary rots tend to be most intense in neighborhoods where
- 2:10Speaker 1: there's an unbalanced buck to door ratio. So if there
- 2:14Speaker 1: are significantly more doughs than bucks in an area, the
- 2:17Speaker 1: bucks simply won't be able to breed all the doughs
- 2:19Speaker 1: the first time around, creating a stronger rut in December.
- 2:24Speaker 1: I've also heard wise white tailors say that if an
- 2:27Speaker 1: area had a lot of standing corn present in mid November,
- 2:32Speaker 1: that a lot of the doughs go on bread simply
- 2:35Speaker 1: because of the lack of visibility that happens during the rout.
- 2:38Speaker 1: This isn't something I've necessarily noticed, but the theory to
- 2:41Speaker 1: me does make sense now when it comes to hunting,
- 2:45Speaker 1: the secondary rut, I have never considered the secondary rut
- 2:49Speaker 1: is something that you really target or you plan for.
- 2:53Speaker 1: Um and for the average white tailor that's usually going
- 2:55Speaker 1: to be the case. The secondary rut can just be
- 2:57Speaker 1: like a little sweetener. It's a cherry on top. If
- 3:00Speaker 1: you have a traditional late season set up where you're
- 3:04Speaker 1: hunting over like a picked corn field, um, and the
- 3:08Speaker 1: weather is your typical late season weather, and it's forcing
- 3:12Speaker 1: dear to be on that food source. Ideally you're gonna
- 3:15Speaker 1: have some does there, and if there's there's does there,
- 3:18Speaker 1: then maybe a bucket is gonna show up a little
- 3:20Speaker 1: bit sooner than he would have before, or he's going
- 3:23Speaker 1: to come in and check out those doughs and move
- 3:26Speaker 1: a bit more erratically in a field and maybe draw
- 3:29Speaker 1: closer to you than what you would normally see. That's
- 3:32Speaker 1: just sort of like what the secondary rot has always
- 3:34Speaker 1: been for me, and I think that's how it is
- 3:37Speaker 1: for a lot of late season hunters, and that secondary
- 3:40Speaker 1: rot is going to be a theme during this week's interviews.
- 3:43Speaker 1: This week, you're going to hear from Nate Crick from
- 3:45Speaker 1: Identical Draw in Kansas, Taylor Chamberlain from Tethered in Virginia,
- 3:50Speaker 1: Joe Call from Minnesota, Rack Stars in Minnesota, and then
- 3:54Speaker 1: Jared Larson in Arkansas from on X. But before we
- 3:58Speaker 1: get to those interviews, I want to re mind you
- 4:00Speaker 1: about our series One Week in November over on YouTube.
- 4:04Speaker 1: Episode four just aired, and we're also doing a one
- 4:09Speaker 1: Week in November giveaway on the Meat Eater dot com
- 4:12Speaker 1: that only goes for about another week or so, so
- 4:14Speaker 1: you need to go sign up. It's probably our biggest
- 4:16Speaker 1: white tail giveaway of the year. There's tons of good
- 4:19Speaker 1: stuff from first Light, Vortex bench made Tethered. All of
- 4:25Speaker 1: the stuff that you see us using in One Week
- 4:26Speaker 1: in November is going to be included in that giveaway package.
- 4:30Speaker 1: Go to the media dot com to sign up for that.
- 4:32Speaker 1: It's free, it's easy. All you have to do is
- 4:34Speaker 1: enter your email address and you're gonna be in there
- 4:36Speaker 1: running to win our biggest white tail package of the year.
- 4:39Speaker 1: All right, let's get to our interviews, alright. Enjoining us
- 4:45Speaker 1: on the line next is Nate Crick from Identical Draw
- 4:47Speaker 1: in Kansas. Now Nate in Kansas. What would you say
- 4:50Speaker 1: the bucket activity is ben lately? On a scale of
- 4:52Speaker 1: one to ten, I would give it a six lately. Um,
- 4:58Speaker 1: that is a kind of a generous number, because the
- 5:01Speaker 1: temperatures have been real warm. Um. We've had um some
- 5:06Speaker 1: sixty degree days. I'm pretty sure it hits seventy um
- 5:10Speaker 1: this last week as well. UM. But honestly, the activity
- 5:13Speaker 1: has been okay, and I've been very surprised about the
- 5:16Speaker 1: morning daylight activity with some bucks you've had around in
- 5:20Speaker 1: the past night. You've described me that you guys often
- 5:23Speaker 1: see a December shift on your property in Kansas. What
- 5:27Speaker 1: does that mean for you guys? Big ticket at this
- 5:30Speaker 1: time of the year. While we see that December shift
- 5:31Speaker 1: is we leave um standing food standing crops on our field.
- 5:36Speaker 1: We don't harvest any corner beans, so we've got um
- 5:40Speaker 1: a few acres of standing food that the deer really
- 5:42Speaker 1: come to this time of the year, and it does
- 5:45Speaker 1: draw in a whole new batch of um bucks and
- 5:48Speaker 1: just a bunch of Doughes as well, um from neighboring
- 5:51Speaker 1: properties that don't have that food store. So UM, Yeah,
- 5:55Speaker 1: we definitely have that going this time of the year,
- 5:56Speaker 1: and it's kind of like December can kind of be
- 5:59Speaker 1: like the rut um our our eight acres because we
- 6:02Speaker 1: just see a bunch of the year that we have
- 6:03Speaker 1: never seen before during the other time of the year.
- 6:06Speaker 1: When you get those new bucks showing up in December,
- 6:08Speaker 1: does that mean anything for signmaking on your property? Um?
- 6:12Speaker 1: Not necessarily sign making. I I was walking around and
- 6:15Speaker 1: I saw like the scrapes, some some scrapes are still
- 6:17Speaker 1: getting um freshened up here and there they look they
- 6:20Speaker 1: look like things are still getting hit. But um, not
- 6:22Speaker 1: not as big on the sign making things like that.
- 6:24Speaker 1: But if we when we do get those new bucks,
- 6:27Speaker 1: we do try to just make a quick jump down
- 6:29Speaker 1: there and try to hunt them while they're around that
- 6:31Speaker 1: some some will hang around and some will just kind
- 6:33Speaker 1: of do a stroll through. What does a morning set
- 6:36Speaker 1: up look like for you guys this time of year,
- 6:38Speaker 1: mornings are hit or miss at that we hunt maybe
- 6:41Speaker 1: half of the mornings. Um. But actually the only good
- 6:45Speaker 1: thing these warm tempts have been doing for us at
- 6:48Speaker 1: least is it's been giving the morning activity life, which
- 6:52Speaker 1: I think when it's like real real cold in the morning,
- 6:55Speaker 1: I feel like, um that that deer activity more goes
- 6:58Speaker 1: to like a really good evening it but um, the
- 7:01Speaker 1: morning activity has been actually pretty decent and um, it's
- 7:05Speaker 1: all it's all timber embedding still kind of like almost
- 7:07Speaker 1: like the route we're hunting good funnels from food and bedding. Um.
- 7:10Speaker 1: But yeah, are are as far as like trail cameras
- 7:12Speaker 1: go to our timber um and bedding. Trail cameras are
- 7:17Speaker 1: really really active in the mornings on the Kansas A D.
- 7:20Speaker 1: Do you guys notice any kind of a shift in
- 7:22Speaker 1: bedding when you get into late season, Um, it's it's
- 7:25Speaker 1: pretty similar, Um, although it is a little more focused
- 7:31Speaker 1: around the food source. We will um just because the
- 7:34Speaker 1: deer will be closer to those corn and beans, like
- 7:37Speaker 1: the traditional really stick stuff that will use for running
- 7:39Speaker 1: kind of anywhere on our eight We do know that
- 7:42Speaker 1: they hugged a little tighter to that food source and
- 7:44Speaker 1: stuff because I think they will just get up during
- 7:46Speaker 1: the middle day, especially if it's cold, and just head
- 7:48Speaker 1: out to that food source and then head just I
- 7:51Speaker 1: don't know, ten yards back into the timber and bed
- 7:54Speaker 1: down until um the evening hours and they'll pop back
- 7:57Speaker 1: out in that food source. If you guys are doing
- 7:59Speaker 1: some in season scouting this time of year, What are
- 8:01Speaker 1: some things that you're looking for? Yeah, so, um, I
- 8:06Speaker 1: guess really we don't have a bunch of like fresh
- 8:09Speaker 1: sign right now that you kind of looking for in
- 8:11Speaker 1: October and November time frame. But right now, um, we're
- 8:13Speaker 1: mainly paying attention to large trail systems coming from food
- 8:20Speaker 1: or like two foods something somewhere along that was line, like,
- 8:23Speaker 1: they'll be pretty beaten down this time of the year
- 8:25Speaker 1: where those deer are heading and um as, so it's
- 8:29Speaker 1: usually the food sources are our top of the mind
- 8:32Speaker 1: for the creators. So a lot of these scouting will
- 8:35Speaker 1: be walking field edges and seeing really where they're they're
- 8:37Speaker 1: going to those food sources and then make your setup
- 8:40Speaker 1: pinched down to those areas going forward. Then in the
- 8:43Speaker 1: sixt week or so, what do you think that bucketctivty
- 8:46Speaker 1: is going to be on a scale of one to
- 8:47Speaker 1: ten in Kansas, I'd probably say about the same. Right
- 8:50Speaker 1: around the right around the six um, temperatures are going
- 8:54Speaker 1: back up. We had a two day cold snap here, um,
- 8:56Speaker 1: but now they're going to be back in the fifties
- 8:59Speaker 1: and sixties. But um, you're still gonna be moving. They're
- 9:02Speaker 1: still gonna be hitting food doors that I believe, So
- 9:04Speaker 1: I mean we might be all still get on on
- 9:07Speaker 1: a buck this time of the year. So um, still
- 9:09Speaker 1: still saying hopeful. Alright, Nate, good luck to you and
- 9:12Speaker 1: your brother. Thanks for joining me all right and joining
- 9:16Speaker 1: us on the line. Next is Taylor Chamberlain in Virginia
- 9:19Speaker 1: from Tethered now Taylor in Virginia. What would you say
- 9:22Speaker 1: the buck activity has been lately on a scale of
- 9:24Speaker 1: one to ten, I still one in time, We've had
- 9:27Speaker 1: about a seven of bluck activity. We really started to
- 9:30Speaker 1: see the peak of the second run, so all those
- 9:34Speaker 1: those that were not bred to first go around are
- 9:38Speaker 1: really popping right now. And so the bucks are out
- 9:41Speaker 1: cruising and I'm starting to see tons of deer daylight
- 9:44Speaker 1: hours all day long, and and they're really kind of
- 9:47Speaker 1: just searching for the next hot though to get on. Historically,
- 9:51Speaker 1: do you always expect to see a strong secondary run
- 9:55Speaker 1: in an urban area. Yes, so we see a really
- 9:59Speaker 1: really really on the secondary and third rut just because
- 10:04Speaker 1: of our bucket doo ratio is so high that um,
- 10:09Speaker 1: it's just not possible to breed all the dose off
- 10:11Speaker 1: the bat. So they come in a second time and
- 10:14Speaker 1: often times a third time and then even sometimes those
- 10:17Speaker 1: newborn bonds will come in uh four months past, like
- 10:21Speaker 1: the quote unquote uh first rut. So we see pretty
- 10:25Speaker 1: strong rut activity in December, January, and I've even seen
- 10:28Speaker 1: some chasing in the February. What are some food sources
- 10:32Speaker 1: that are relevant in an urban environment in the east
- 10:34Speaker 1: right now? So I look for very high steam count areas.
- 10:39Speaker 1: Um So a lot of like brushy thickets tend to
- 10:43Speaker 1: be great this time of year. That's where a lot
- 10:45Speaker 1: of dose are hiding because they're going to be messed with.
- 10:48Speaker 1: But also anywhere where there's been a large abundance of
- 10:52Speaker 1: red oaks, they tend to be really palatable right now. Um,
- 10:58Speaker 1: I think that the tannins that are and I'm kind
- 11:00Speaker 1: of dispaid a little bit after they went on the
- 11:02Speaker 1: ground for a little while. So those red oaces tend
- 11:04Speaker 1: to get pounded. But I really really look for big thick,
- 11:09Speaker 1: brushy bottoms and if they have like a lot of
- 11:12Speaker 1: thorns and thickets in them, the deer will like to
- 11:15Speaker 1: kind of nibble on those buds. And that is just
- 11:19Speaker 1: could not be hotter this time of year. Does your
- 11:22Speaker 1: mobile hunting set up change for you as we get
- 11:24Speaker 1: into the late season. Yeah, so I hang and hunt
- 11:28Speaker 1: everywhere I go. That's kind of a dual wrong reason why. One,
- 11:31Speaker 1: in areas where I used to leave climbing sticks up,
- 11:34Speaker 1: I found myself being lazy and kind of hunting that
- 11:37Speaker 1: tree rather than hunting the right tree to be in. Um,
- 11:41Speaker 1: so I took all my climbing six downs force myself
- 11:45Speaker 1: to hunt the correct tree. Uh. And then secondarily on
- 11:49Speaker 1: that is because I don't want any sign of a
- 11:53Speaker 1: hunter back there. I mean this time of year, when
- 11:55Speaker 1: there are no leaves on the trees, there's no foliage,
- 11:57Speaker 1: it's really really easy spot those black straps on trees,
- 12:02Speaker 1: and I don't want to leave any sign for both
- 12:05Speaker 1: other homeowners to see that there's hunting going on, but
- 12:08Speaker 1: also for other hunters to see, because if other hunters
- 12:11Speaker 1: see those spots, then maybe they might think, well, hey,
- 12:14Speaker 1: if a hunter is already hunting there, then I can
- 12:15Speaker 1: go get permission on that property much easier than another one.
- 12:19Speaker 1: So I a couple of years ago removed all of
- 12:22Speaker 1: my preset locations. I just hanging hunt every time, and
- 12:26Speaker 1: I have plenty of trees that are prepped and cut
- 12:28Speaker 1: out and ready to go, but they just don't have
- 12:30Speaker 1: the sticks in them. When we have the secondary rut happening,
- 12:35Speaker 1: do you notice an uptick and signmaking at all? I do.
- 12:39Speaker 1: Scrapes are are still a very very hot commodity because
- 12:43Speaker 1: you know, that's how those deer communicating, and so bucks
- 12:46Speaker 1: are gonna always kind of go to those scrapes. They're
- 12:48Speaker 1: gonna try and see what's in the area, and a
- 12:52Speaker 1: lot of rubbing as well. But outside of that, I
- 12:55Speaker 1: also know that those deer are trying to use sent
- 12:57Speaker 1: to their advantage, and so I'm hunting in areas that
- 13:00Speaker 1: might be nearest scrape and near a primary scrape as
- 13:03Speaker 1: well as to where a buck might want to cruise
- 13:06Speaker 1: cent check in area. And that is just a killer
- 13:09Speaker 1: setup for this time of year. Where are you running
- 13:12Speaker 1: your trail cameras right now? I'm running my trail cameras
- 13:16Speaker 1: in those locations. So I want to find like a
- 13:19Speaker 1: scrape and then maybe a travel path two and from
- 13:22Speaker 1: that scrape, or or maybe two or three um trails
- 13:26Speaker 1: that kind of intersect at one location, because that's the
- 13:30Speaker 1: highest probability for massive ger movement. What I'm trying to
- 13:33Speaker 1: do is inventory not only the deer that they're using
- 13:35Speaker 1: those spots, but the time that they're using them. You know,
- 13:38Speaker 1: spots no good to me. If a gear is using
- 13:40Speaker 1: it at two o'clock in the morning, it's really good
- 13:42Speaker 1: to me if they're using it at nine thirty in
- 13:44Speaker 1: the morning or at three o'clock in the afternoon. So
- 13:47Speaker 1: I try to position my cameras where I can get
- 13:50Speaker 1: the most intelligence not only in the time of data
- 13:53Speaker 1: they're using, but also what deer are using it going forward.
- 13:58Speaker 1: Then in the next week or so, what do you
- 14:00Speaker 1: think that bucket activity is going to be on a
- 14:02Speaker 1: scale of one to ten in Virginia. I think we're
- 14:05Speaker 1: gonna be at seven or eight. Man, I mean we're
- 14:07Speaker 1: we're not full wide than like we were in November seven,
- 14:11Speaker 1: but we're gonna be pretty darn close. So I think
- 14:13Speaker 1: that we're If you're able to hunt, you need to
- 14:16Speaker 1: get out in the tree and uh and get ready
- 14:18Speaker 1: because it's a great opportunity to put it year down.
- 14:21Speaker 1: A piece can find where a cruising buck is overlapping
- 14:25Speaker 1: with a seating area, you're gonna see arguably better dear
- 14:29Speaker 1: movement than you were in early November. This is one
- 14:31Speaker 1: of my favorite times a year to put the deer down.
- 14:33Speaker 1: All right, Taylor, good luck the rest of your season.
- 14:35Speaker 1: Thanks for joining me, Thanks for having me all right
- 14:40Speaker 1: and joining us on the line. Next is Joe call
- 14:42Speaker 1: from Minnesota. Rack Stars in Minnesota. Now, Joe in Minnesota,
- 14:46Speaker 1: what would you say the bucket activities been lately on
- 14:49Speaker 1: a scale of one to ten? Well, I would have
- 14:51Speaker 1: to say it was probably around uh seven with this
- 14:54Speaker 1: nice cold front we had to come through. I've heard
- 14:57Speaker 1: some guys seeing some good buck activity. And then also
- 15:00Speaker 1: it's a nice picture of a buck that was harvest
- 15:02Speaker 1: here uh a day ago, so that that cold front
- 15:06Speaker 1: had just come through really got the dear moving. But
- 15:09Speaker 1: you know it's it's supposed to warm up here a
- 15:11Speaker 1: little bit, which will make things a little more difficult.
- 15:13Speaker 1: But currently here, I mean activity has picked up a
- 15:16Speaker 1: little bit. I know you run a lot of trail
- 15:18Speaker 1: cameras there. Where do you want that was placed in
- 15:20Speaker 1: early December? I actually just moved one um to a scrape.
- 15:25Speaker 1: Uh it's it's a scrape that is there a year
- 15:28Speaker 1: after year, and I actually just moved it there and
- 15:30Speaker 1: I picked up a two and a half year old
- 15:32Speaker 1: that I've that I've had on camera, but I haven't
- 15:34Speaker 1: had him on camera since the gun season here, but
- 15:37Speaker 1: I moved it over there and I picked him up
- 15:39Speaker 1: on camera. So I think, uh, you know, you kind
- 15:41Speaker 1: of want to keep them those scrapes. Yet they're still
- 15:43Speaker 1: hitting those scrapes, whether it's the bucks looking for you know,
- 15:47Speaker 1: some of those doughs that are going to come into
- 15:48Speaker 1: Astris here yet um or just you know, you might
- 15:52Speaker 1: catch a cruiser coming through as well. But I think, uh,
- 15:55Speaker 1: you know, one of the main things I would focus
- 15:57Speaker 1: on is is scrapes. Then obviously your food sources to
- 16:01Speaker 1: um the only thing with the food sources, you might
- 16:03Speaker 1: be getting a few more you know, night pictures. But
- 16:07Speaker 1: I think if you're focusing on trying to harvest the book,
- 16:10Speaker 1: I would I would probably transition those those cameras to
- 16:13Speaker 1: those scrapes and what food sources are relevant right now.
- 16:17Speaker 1: I think, you know, king is is the corn and beans.
- 16:20Speaker 1: I believe along with mixing in Braska's I love always
- 16:24Speaker 1: mixing in um those Braskas with with my corn and beans.
- 16:27Speaker 1: But I know a lot of guys have been saying
- 16:30Speaker 1: that there's been a lot of a lot of deer
- 16:32Speaker 1: hitting hitting the corn and being especially with that cold
- 16:34Speaker 1: front like I was talking about just coming through. But
- 16:37Speaker 1: I've had a lot of success late season, you know,
- 16:40Speaker 1: on on those particular food sources. In December in Minnesota,
- 16:44Speaker 1: do you notice better movement in the mornings or afternoons.
- 16:48Speaker 1: You know, it's the I've had some success, you know,
- 16:51Speaker 1: seeing some good mature deer on their feet in the mornings.
- 16:55Speaker 1: But I think more or less that might be because
- 16:57Speaker 1: somebody else was out hunting. It might have pushed them
- 16:59Speaker 1: a little bit. I would focus more on the evenings, um.
- 17:02Speaker 1: But the only thing is in the evenings, UM, I would.
- 17:05Speaker 1: I would try to get into some cover if possible.
- 17:07Speaker 1: I know everybody's hunting setup is is different, but if
- 17:11Speaker 1: you have an opportunity, you know, I would. I would
- 17:13Speaker 1: mainly focus on like a transition area if anything. Um,
- 17:17Speaker 1: it's just that those deer, you know, it's it's survival
- 17:20Speaker 1: moment for those guys right now. And and we just
- 17:23Speaker 1: finished up with our our firearms season and now Musloton
- 17:27Speaker 1: seasons open, and and those deer, I mean, they're on
- 17:29Speaker 1: pins and needles right now, and they're gonna do whatever
- 17:32Speaker 1: it takes to survive. And and the big boys they
- 17:35Speaker 1: know that they can't step out, you know, until dark.
- 17:38Speaker 1: So you know, if you're gonna focus on trying to
- 17:40Speaker 1: harvest something, that would I would definitely get off the
- 17:43Speaker 1: food sources, you know, a couple hundred yards and try
- 17:45Speaker 1: to intercept something there. Do you usually notice the shift
- 17:49Speaker 1: in bedding this time of year? Yeah? So I was
- 17:52Speaker 1: actually talking to a buddy of mine and uh, he
- 17:55Speaker 1: was out this last week and he hopped up in
- 17:58Speaker 1: the stand. Specifically, you went on a south side slope
- 18:01Speaker 1: where he could see a ways and he caught a
- 18:04Speaker 1: buck as soon as he got up in the stand.
- 18:06Speaker 1: He was better than a south side slope. So come
- 18:08Speaker 1: December here, you know, focus more on those south sides
- 18:11Speaker 1: if possible, or if you have you know, a spot
- 18:14Speaker 1: in your timber that might be you know open where
- 18:16Speaker 1: some sun I can get through. You know, those might
- 18:18Speaker 1: be good betting areas now, um for those deer you know,
- 18:22Speaker 1: come December here in colder temperatures going forward, then in
- 18:25Speaker 1: the sext week or so, what do you think that
- 18:27Speaker 1: buck activity is going to be on a scale of
- 18:29Speaker 1: one to ten in Minnesota? Man, I I look at
- 18:34Speaker 1: the forecast, you know, the upcoming forecast, and and I
- 18:37Speaker 1: just don't see anything really too, you know, kick things
- 18:40Speaker 1: in the high gear. But you know, like we're talking about,
- 18:43Speaker 1: just do you never know if that that though is
- 18:46Speaker 1: coming into asterisk yet in your area and and if so,
- 18:49Speaker 1: I mean you're can attract some bucks. But um, you know,
- 18:53Speaker 1: one thing I looked at this Saturday, it's supposed to
- 18:55Speaker 1: be sunny. You know, it's supposed to be cloudy throughout
- 18:56Speaker 1: the week here. Um, if if I were to pick
- 18:59Speaker 1: a day to go out, I would maybe shoot for
- 19:02Speaker 1: for Saturday if it's gonna be sunny in your area,
- 19:04Speaker 1: and maybe you're gonna catch some of some of those deer,
- 19:06Speaker 1: you know, enjoying that sunlight. But I mean, to be
- 19:09Speaker 1: honest with you, My my guess is probably gonna be
- 19:11Speaker 1: around the five. I mean, I don't think it's gonna
- 19:14Speaker 1: be any higher or less. Um. You know, just with
- 19:16Speaker 1: the temperature is kind of leveling out here in December.
- 19:20Speaker 1: Usually as hunters, we want to cold temperatures in the
- 19:23Speaker 1: north and um, you know we're just not going to
- 19:25Speaker 1: get those temperatures. But anything had happened right now, and
- 19:29Speaker 1: like I said, if you can catch a dollan estris, um,
- 19:31Speaker 1: you know, good things might happen for you, all right, Joe,
- 19:34Speaker 1: good luck to you and everyone else from Minnesota rack Stars.
- 19:37Speaker 1: Thanks for joining me. Sounds good. Thanks Spencer all right
- 19:40Speaker 1: and joining us on the line. Next is Jared Larson
- 19:42Speaker 1: from on X in Arkansas. Jared in Arkansas, what would
- 19:46Speaker 1: you say the buck activity has been lately on a
- 19:48Speaker 1: scale of one to ten? So I just finished up
- 19:50Speaker 1: a hot in Arkansas yesterday actually, and I would rate
- 19:54Speaker 1: it as maybe like three UM from my experience in
- 19:58Speaker 1: the camp I was in. I was hunting with uh
- 20:01Speaker 1: five other guys, so we had plenty of guys in
- 20:03Speaker 1: the woods and we were running, and then we gained
- 20:07Speaker 1: some access to private for two days. On the public,
- 20:10Speaker 1: i'd have rated it as a one UM and on
- 20:12Speaker 1: the private probably like five UM. And so really it
- 20:17Speaker 1: was an evening game for us. We had some really
- 20:20Speaker 1: hot weather. In fact, I believe it was record high
- 20:22Speaker 1: temps on like December two and third, we hit like
- 20:26Speaker 1: seventy six UM. So anytime that you're in record high,
- 20:30Speaker 1: especially late in the season like that, it's it's gonna
- 20:33Speaker 1: be some tough sledding. But you can't kill me if
- 20:35Speaker 1: you're not out there. Did that mean a shift to
- 20:38Speaker 1: focusing on water for you guys, or did you still
- 20:40Speaker 1: focus on late season things like food. Yeah, so we
- 20:44Speaker 1: we definitely tried a couple of different tactics. I sat
- 20:47Speaker 1: over upon one evening, we tried to find like cool
- 20:51Speaker 1: north facing slopes that would have good potential betting areas
- 20:55Speaker 1: and just trying to get in real tight. We figured
- 20:58Speaker 1: it was gonna be more of an e the game.
- 21:00Speaker 1: Didn't have much confidence in mornings at all, just because
- 21:05Speaker 1: of the temps and deer really not needing seeing as much.
- 21:09Speaker 1: We're in the northwest part of Arkansas, so that has
- 21:12Speaker 1: a more traditional rut, you know, kind of that Halloween
- 21:15Speaker 1: the first couple of weeks in November. Now, I did
- 21:18Speaker 1: know some guys that were down in like the Delta
- 21:20Speaker 1: in the southern and eastern parts of Arkansas that had
- 21:23Speaker 1: much better action than we did, as their rut is
- 21:26Speaker 1: more you know, kind of peeking right in the early
- 21:29Speaker 1: part of December here. Um. But yeah, with those hot temps,
- 21:32Speaker 1: we're focusing on cool places, really getting in tight to betting, um.
- 21:37Speaker 1: And then in the evenings, you know, just finding what
- 21:40Speaker 1: food source deer we're hitting, and on public you know,
- 21:43Speaker 1: there was a ton of acorns where we were, but
- 21:46Speaker 1: they really didn't seem keyed in on that. So that
- 21:48Speaker 1: really led our shift to go find a chunk of
- 21:50Speaker 1: private land as we were seeing a pilot deer you
- 21:53Speaker 1: know mostly does coming out into you know, just pastor
- 21:57Speaker 1: land hayfields. Um. And so that's really the last two
- 22:00Speaker 1: days we spent on private land, just trying to find
- 22:03Speaker 1: those cool north facing betting areas with close proximity to
- 22:08Speaker 1: a hayfield and getting into tight So in northern Arkansas,
- 22:12Speaker 1: what would you label this phase of the rut as
- 22:14Speaker 1: right now? Oh, I would definitely label it as post
- 22:18Speaker 1: rut um. You know, one of the guys in camp
- 22:21Speaker 1: definitely saw a couple of bucks that were out speaking,
- 22:24Speaker 1: so potentially finding those second cycle estris does you know,
- 22:28Speaker 1: given about a month back from that that peak rut
- 22:31Speaker 1: you know peak breading day of you know what they
- 22:33Speaker 1: claim as November early November there um, So certainly some
- 22:38Speaker 1: you know second Estrius does could be running around, but
- 22:42Speaker 1: I would definitely categorize it as as post route. If
- 22:45Speaker 1: you're doing some digital scouting on on X in the
- 22:48Speaker 1: South in December, what are some things that you're keying
- 22:50Speaker 1: in on, So a few things I would be looking
- 22:53Speaker 1: for is I'd really be turning on our photography base
- 22:57Speaker 1: map as you said, if it's hot, find water, but
- 23:01Speaker 1: otherwise find those good betting areas. And we've added a
- 23:05Speaker 1: couple of recent layers. UM. If you go into your
- 23:09Speaker 1: my Layers tab and over the layer library, you can
- 23:13Speaker 1: turn on the tree species and habitat types maps. It's
- 23:16Speaker 1: a new layer. It's gonna show you where acorn producing
- 23:19Speaker 1: oaks are, where thermal cover is so pending what situation
- 23:24Speaker 1: you're in, what kind of weather you have, and there's
- 23:26Speaker 1: actually a really good cold front moving into the region
- 23:29Speaker 1: uh this coming weekend. UH, So I would turn on
- 23:33Speaker 1: one of our new layers with that free species and
- 23:35Speaker 1: habitats habitat types and focus in on you know, specific
- 23:39Speaker 1: oak areas or finding that thermal deer cover moving in
- 23:42Speaker 1: sight to betting between betting and food and make it
- 23:45Speaker 1: happen going forward. Then in this next week or so,
- 23:48Speaker 1: what do you think that bucket TV is going to
- 23:50Speaker 1: be on a scale of one to ten in Arkansas? So,
- 23:53Speaker 1: just given the hot weather that has been present for
- 23:55Speaker 1: the last week or so, UM, and there's a major
- 23:59Speaker 1: temperature change again looks like it's coming in on Friday,
- 24:02Speaker 1: so I would guess that bucks are gonna be on
- 24:05Speaker 1: their feet looking for those second cycholesterous does. I'm gonna
- 24:08Speaker 1: give it, you know, somewhere between the six and the seven,
- 24:11Speaker 1: and good time to go out there and punch a
- 24:14Speaker 1: late season buck tag. All right, Jared, good luck with
- 24:16Speaker 1: the rest of your season. Thanks for joining me. Appreciated Spencer,
- 24:21Speaker 1: And that concludes this week's episode of Wired Haunts rout
- 24:24Speaker 1: Fresh Radio. Thanks to Nate, Taylor, Joe and Jared for
