- 1:40Speaker 1: Hello, this is Ashley from the Overland Journal podcast. I
- 1:44Speaker 1: am senior editor at Overland Journal and Expedition Portal and
- 1:48Speaker 1: today I have some very special guests. You may know
- 1:51Speaker 1: them as a Kila World from the Internet and they
- 1:55Speaker 1: are a family of three from Austria and they are
- 1:59Speaker 1: traveling the world. You may have seen their seventy seven
- 2:02Speaker 1: bloom Mercedes truck on Instagram or traveling the world. So
- 2:06Speaker 1: very grateful to have them here today. But first we're
- 2:09Speaker 1: going to talk to Lenox High. Lenox, how are you?
- 2:13Speaker 3: I'm good?
- 2:14Speaker 1: How old are you now?
- 2:17Speaker 3: I'm ten and in the January twin suits.
- 2:20Speaker 1: I'm going to ooh and how long have you been
- 2:24Speaker 1: on the road? For five years? Five years, so that's
- 2:28Speaker 1: been half your life almost Do you remember what it
- 2:32Speaker 1: was like before? Not? Really cool? So where are some
- 2:38Speaker 1: of the places that you have traveled to?
- 2:41Speaker 4: Turkey, Round, Russia and Australia, Indonesia?
- 2:51Speaker 3: Do you use a Canada?
- 2:53Speaker 1: Just a few? It's great, I know there's more than that, right,
- 2:58Speaker 1: you're just pointing to a map that's up on the
- 3:01Speaker 1: ceiling and it's one of those scratch off maps where
- 3:04Speaker 1: you scratch off the countries that you've been to. So
- 3:07Speaker 1: what are some of the best memories that you have
- 3:11Speaker 1: from one of your travels.
- 3:13Speaker 4: A really funny memory was in my favorite country, Japan,
- 3:17Speaker 4: and it.
- 3:18Speaker 3: Was my sixth birthday, I think, and we were.
- 3:23Speaker 4: At a japan family and the guy was the daughter
- 3:32Speaker 4: of a son ordered a cake for me for a
- 3:35Speaker 4: birthday and he was just eating the cake with dropsticks.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Amazing. That takes some skill and patience. What kind of
- 3:48Speaker 1: cake was it? Do you remember chocolate? What other things
- 3:54Speaker 1: did you do in Japan while you were there.
- 3:56Speaker 4: It was the first time I really like went good eating,
- 4:00Speaker 4: like for a bit of time and that really was
- 4:04Speaker 4: kind of good at it. But then we stopped and
- 4:07Speaker 4: now in Austria I finally leaned it again.
- 4:10Speaker 1: Did you start skiing in Japan or did you start
- 4:12Speaker 1: skiing before that?
- 4:13Speaker 4: I started skiing before that, But in Japan it was
- 4:17Speaker 4: like the really.
- 4:18Speaker 3: Good skiing, like with the good snow and like for a.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Long time nice powder. I heard that you the snow
- 4:26Speaker 1: was so deep that when you were skiing, you ended
- 4:29Speaker 1: up jumping into a big pile.
- 4:32Speaker 4: I wasn't jumping in a pile, just like a straight
- 4:36Speaker 4: line down. It was like very sick powdern I was
- 4:40Speaker 4: just like going like normal, But then I just went
- 4:44Speaker 4: down in the.
- 4:45Speaker 1: Snow because it was so deep.
- 4:46Speaker 3: Yeah, and then I was just.
- 4:47Speaker 4: Stuck and I was trying for help, but I think
- 4:50Speaker 4: my screams were so muffled that nobody could hear them.
- 4:54Speaker 1: Oh no, but somebody got you out, obviously.
- 4:57Speaker 3: My dad went up again.
- 4:58Speaker 1: Good, that's good to know. That must have been a
- 5:00Speaker 1: lot of snow, but also scary. What other experiences in
- 5:05Speaker 1: Japan do you remember? In particular? Did you meet some
- 5:08Speaker 1: other kids? There, no, no other kids.
- 5:12Speaker 4: The same guy that bought me the birthday cake. We
- 5:16Speaker 4: went out for dinner and we all bought some dong
- 5:21Speaker 4: that's the Japanese soup with news news soup, and she
- 5:26Speaker 4: was just eating the soup with chopsticks, and I was
- 5:29Speaker 4: just like amazed, looking at my own spoon, and I
- 5:32Speaker 4: was like, what, how.
- 5:33Speaker 1: Can you eat it? It's amazing. Did you learn how
- 5:37Speaker 1: to use chopsticks in Japan? No? Yeah, it takes some time.
- 5:43Speaker 1: And like you said, patients, did you meet kids in
- 5:48Speaker 1: other countries that you spent some time with, or.
- 5:53Speaker 4: Like the best kids on the world trip, because we
- 5:58Speaker 4: went too families, both two girls, and they were like
- 6:02Speaker 4: in declimbing, canyoning, nice seeing a canyon, that sort of stuff,
- 6:09Speaker 4: and I was really good friends with them. That was
- 6:12Speaker 4: the best time with the kids.
- 6:13Speaker 1: I think were they also living on the road or
- 6:16Speaker 1: were they living in one.
- 6:18Speaker 3: Of the families. They were living in a camper, but
- 6:22Speaker 3: they were not like traveling. I think it. I was
- 6:24Speaker 3: just like staying in a very big.
- 6:25Speaker 4: Camper from school, and the Otter family was like in
- 6:30Speaker 4: a house, like in a house, not traveling, gotcha.
- 6:34Speaker 1: So they were fun because they did lots of different
- 6:36Speaker 1: types of activities that you liked. Did you meet other
- 6:41Speaker 1: kids in other countries that were also living on the road.
- 6:45Speaker 4: In Greece there was like two families and you met
- 6:48Speaker 4: them and they both said kids. They were also really
- 6:52Speaker 4: fun to play with. So we also went lots in
- 6:54Speaker 4: the water.
- 6:55Speaker 1: Oh nice, you like the water? Hey, yeah, what do
- 6:58Speaker 1: you like about it?
- 6:59Speaker 4: It feels like you you can just like fly, but
- 7:03Speaker 4: it's not in the skies under the water. And I
- 7:08Speaker 4: loved the feeling when my head's under the water, I
- 7:11Speaker 4: can do whatever I want and.
- 7:13Speaker 1: You can see all sorts of things down there. You
- 7:16Speaker 1: were saying, was it yesterday that you really like snorkeling?
- 7:21Speaker 1: Is that right? Yeah? Have you seen sort of sea
- 7:26Speaker 1: creatures while you're snarkling? Or corals or fish? Oh? What
- 7:32Speaker 1: did that look like?
- 7:34Speaker 3: Like crack and ate tentacles?
- 7:36Speaker 1: That's really cool?
- 7:37Speaker 3: Awesome, there's sting rays and panta.
- 7:42Speaker 1: Nice. What areas were you snarkling in? Mostly Indonesia?
- 7:47Speaker 3: Was the best time in the water?
- 7:50Speaker 1: Must have been nice and warm.
- 7:52Speaker 4: Yeah, the most lot of creatures I've ever seen in
- 7:55Speaker 4: my life was all Indonesia.
- 7:56Speaker 3: We've seen a whale shark, We've seen lots of race
- 8:01Speaker 3: see cracking cools.
- 8:03Speaker 1: So you feel really comfortable under the water, obviously. Tell
- 8:06Speaker 1: me a little bit about your living quarters. You showed
- 8:11Speaker 1: me your bed set up yesterday and it's really cool.
- 8:14Speaker 1: You have like a bunch of really beautiful photos and
- 8:17Speaker 1: some stuffed animals. And you showed me some lego that
- 8:20Speaker 1: you brought out and your clothes or organized back there
- 8:24Speaker 1: too or something. Right, What is it about that space
- 8:26Speaker 1: that you enjoy?
- 8:27Speaker 4: It's more like I feel when I'm in there, I
- 8:32Speaker 4: feel like it's a little caves just the outside world,
- 8:36Speaker 4: and I'm like in my little space. And when I
- 8:39Speaker 4: want to be alone, I can't just take the curtains
- 8:42Speaker 4: and pull them out so nobody.
- 8:44Speaker 3: Can't see me anymore. M private space when I wanted.
- 8:50Speaker 1: Yeah, I imagine, because you're with your family all the time,
- 8:53Speaker 1: which can be great, I'm assuming, but you're in this.
- 8:56Speaker 1: I mean, this is a small space compared to a house,
- 8:59Speaker 1: but it's quite space just in here. But it's nice
- 9:01Speaker 1: to have a little break to yourself to do whatever
- 9:05Speaker 1: you want. What do you do when you're in there
- 9:08Speaker 1: by yourself? Are you playing with Lego? Reading?
- 9:11Speaker 3: Playing in the legos?
- 9:13Speaker 1: Are? Reading?
- 9:14Speaker 3: And video games?
- 9:16Speaker 1: But what's your favorite video game?
- 9:18Speaker 3: Star Wars?
- 9:19Speaker 1: Yeah? You like Lego videos? Nice? Just on the sing,
- 9:25Speaker 1: you know, it's just like nice. And what was the
- 9:29Speaker 1: Lego you brought out yesterday that looked really cool?
- 9:33Speaker 3: It's from the Gardens of the Galaxy and it's the ship.
- 9:36Speaker 1: Do you have other Lego as well or something?
- 9:39Speaker 4: Have a whole Lego box in there too, but not
- 9:43Speaker 4: not like not like the ones like a ship.
- 9:47Speaker 3: It's just Lego pieces.
- 9:49Speaker 1: Nice.
- 9:50Speaker 3: You can just go whatever I want.
- 9:52Speaker 1: What are your favorite days when you're traveling, like what
- 9:55Speaker 1: does your favorite day look like? What do you do
- 9:58Speaker 1: during that time? Or does it depend?
- 10:01Speaker 3: It depends where you are. I mean when you're in
- 10:04Speaker 3: the mountains.
- 10:05Speaker 4: And there's now I would love to go skiing and
- 10:08Speaker 4: after skiing have hot chocolate.
- 10:11Speaker 1: That's really nice.
- 10:12Speaker 4: When you're in Indonesia, you go in the water, see.
- 10:17Speaker 3: Very much and you come out.
- 10:20Speaker 1: Are there any favorite foods that you have that you've
- 10:23Speaker 1: tried or that your mom and dad make? Plagna?
- 10:28Speaker 4: My mom doesn't make it very often, maybe one time
- 10:31Speaker 4: in the year, but it's your favorite dish.
- 10:32Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, it can be difficult.
- 10:35Speaker 3: No, no, no no, but I can tell the story.
- 10:38Speaker 5: We were in Mongoli and.
- 10:39Speaker 4: We met some nice people in a York It's just
- 10:42Speaker 4: like a house, but like way smaller made out of fur,
- 10:48Speaker 4: animal fur or clothes or whatever they have to build it.
- 10:52Speaker 4: They invited us for breakfast and so in the morning,
- 10:55Speaker 4: I stood up, I came out, I came to their
- 11:00Speaker 4: and they said like, oh, hi, come in for breakfast
- 11:04Speaker 4: and they serve.
- 11:06Speaker 3: Me old fudd from a yak and stone hardy bread and.
- 11:12Speaker 4: I was just like wait a minute. I got outside,
- 11:16Speaker 4: I went in the truck and told my mom, my mom,
- 11:19Speaker 4: please don't make me eat this. Please, now, it was
- 11:22Speaker 4: so disgusting.
- 11:23Speaker 1: Oh no, she didn't believe me that they.
- 11:26Speaker 3: Wanted to serve me this.
- 11:27Speaker 4: So she came inside and she was like, Okay, you're fine,
- 11:32Speaker 4: and so I didn't have to eat it.
- 11:34Speaker 1: It seems like growing up, no matter whether you're in
- 11:38Speaker 1: a yurt in Mongolia or you're at your parents' place
- 11:41Speaker 1: or your grandparents place, there's always something when you're a
- 11:44Speaker 1: kid that you're like, no, thank you. Are you doing
- 11:47Speaker 1: a homeschool program or what kind of schooling are you doing?
- 11:51Speaker 1: Or are you doing any you're doing homeschooling.
- 11:55Speaker 3: My mom and my dad are teaching me and they
- 11:59Speaker 3: know what they.
- 12:00Speaker 4: Have to teach me because they take the books from
- 12:03Speaker 4: the school that I should go into. They just take
- 12:06Speaker 4: the books and my mom teaches me how to do
- 12:08Speaker 4: everything in the books, and I have to do it.
- 12:11Speaker 3: But we don't do it.
- 12:12Speaker 4: Worry off And I mean the last time, the last
- 12:15Speaker 4: time I was learning.
- 12:16Speaker 3: It was like months ago. It's not like program.
- 12:20Speaker 4: When it's not cool weather outside, we do teaching and learning,
- 12:25Speaker 4: but when it's nice weather outside, we don't do it.
- 12:27Speaker 3: And we do something outside.
- 12:29Speaker 1: What kinds of subjects when you're doing homeschooling? Are you
- 12:33Speaker 1: learning about.
- 12:35Speaker 4: My mom teaches me mass German, and my dad teaches
- 12:39Speaker 4: me like geography, biology.
- 12:42Speaker 1: What are your favorite subjects?
- 12:44Speaker 3: My favorite?
- 12:45Speaker 4: I don't know the subject of my favorite class in English,
- 12:51Speaker 4: but please English Easter.
- 12:53Speaker 3: Oh yeah, history, history is my favorite.
- 12:55Speaker 1: Yeah. Have you been able to learn about the place
- 13:00Speaker 1: is that you've been traveling through as a way to
- 13:03Speaker 1: learn history of that area or are you learning it
- 13:06Speaker 1: like through a kind of textbook or like.
- 13:11Speaker 4: Like for an example, here in my dad learns me
- 13:17Speaker 4: about the Indians that we're here.
- 13:20Speaker 1: Mm hmm.
- 13:20Speaker 3: When we're in Greece, he learns me about the gods.
- 13:25Speaker 3: Still of the gods? Do you still live here?
- 13:28Speaker 1: That's probably a really fun way of making it history
- 13:31Speaker 1: interesting because you're in that place learning about it, and
- 13:35Speaker 1: you can see it in the sculptures or the the
- 13:40Speaker 1: buildings or like here, you guys will see totem poles.
- 13:45Speaker 1: Further towards Vancouver, there are also other sorts of indigenous
- 13:50Speaker 1: sites that you'll probably see along the way, which is
- 13:52Speaker 1: really a cool way of learning about the history. So
- 13:56Speaker 1: that's cool. So they give you do they give you
- 13:58Speaker 1: textbooks from the school or is it more like a
- 14:02Speaker 1: worksheet online?
- 14:05Speaker 3: It's like textbook from school. I should just go into
- 14:09Speaker 3: and we do that a little bit.
- 14:12Speaker 4: We do a little bit on an online app where
- 14:15Speaker 4: you can also do it, but mostly my dad reads
- 14:19Speaker 4: it on the internet and then he shows it to
- 14:23Speaker 4: me in like history books, not from school.
- 14:26Speaker 3: He just brought them. Then he reads it out roud
- 14:29Speaker 3: and I can listen.
- 14:30Speaker 1: Have there been any stories or things that you've learned
- 14:34Speaker 1: about so far that have been your favorite or like particularly.
- 14:39Speaker 3: Do only to stone Age?
- 14:42Speaker 1: Okay, that's fair.
- 14:45Speaker 3: I only know like one very important thing, but I
- 14:48Speaker 3: don't learn the name in English.
- 14:50Speaker 4: But when the people lived in stone Age, they were
- 14:58Speaker 4: like wandering around. We're traveling, but like you're triking. You're
- 15:03Speaker 4: chriking right, And when they was rest, you know, when
- 15:09Speaker 4: they like transformed into Homo sapiens all the way they
- 15:14Speaker 4: were like some of them were staying at one place
- 15:18Speaker 4: and doing farm work like planting seeds bo trees.
- 15:24Speaker 1: The Neolithic Revolution very interesting. So you guys have been
- 15:31Speaker 1: in Canada for a few months now, and I know
- 15:34Speaker 1: that you've had a lot of challenges while you've been here,
- 15:36Speaker 1: from you know, vehicle issues to finding camping and tell
- 15:43Speaker 1: me some some of the challenges that you guys have
- 15:46Speaker 1: been experiencing here Mosquitos when.
- 15:48Speaker 4: We're trying to sleep. The worst thing that's ever happened
- 15:52Speaker 4: to me. There were like so many, there were so
- 15:56Speaker 4: many in Canada. It's like the worst mosquito place I've.
- 16:01Speaker 3: Ever been to.
- 16:02Speaker 1: That's crazy. Yeah, we were talking about this, how it's
- 16:05Speaker 1: been the worst mosquito season I've ever experienced in Canada
- 16:09Speaker 1: because we have a really late summer and a really wet,
- 16:12Speaker 1: wet spring more than usual. Yeah, that's not great. You
- 16:15Speaker 1: were saying that you're climbing in Revelstoke and all the
- 16:19Speaker 1: mosquitoes are biting you when you're climbing, which heat. Yeah,
- 16:22Speaker 1: in the heat. Yeah. Man. What other kinds of challenges
- 16:27Speaker 1: have you experienced here so far? Yeah, yep, Yeah, Canada
- 16:34Speaker 1: is a big country. What are some of the things
- 16:36Speaker 1: that you've enjoyed.
- 16:38Speaker 4: I enjoyed over lakes here in Canada. They're also clear
- 16:43Speaker 4: here more in the more in the west coast, even
- 16:47Speaker 4: after cold. I loved swimming in them.
- 16:49Speaker 1: That's very like the.
- 16:52Speaker 3: Best thing in Canada till now. And I also saw
- 16:55Speaker 3: closer than ever.
- 16:56Speaker 1: Before Ooh, did you guys see any bears? Yeah? Yeah,
- 17:01Speaker 1: oh okay, black bear tecups and no grizzlies yet though
- 17:06Speaker 1: you probably won't see any, but you'll probably see some
- 17:09Speaker 1: whales and some sea life when you head towards Vancouver,
- 17:15Speaker 1: more like Vancouver Island, so that'll be really nice.
- 17:19Speaker 3: And hope I see ours.
- 17:21Speaker 1: Oh yeah, see them too, We see one I have? Yeah, yeah,
- 17:26Speaker 1: they're amazing. What else do you like about living on
- 17:30Speaker 1: the road or don't like living about it? I guess
- 17:33Speaker 1: it's what you know, because I don't like living on.
- 17:36Speaker 4: The road because we're together twenty four to seven, right,
- 17:40Speaker 4: twenty four hours a day, seven days a week. That's
- 17:44Speaker 4: the thing I don't like. I mean, of course I
- 17:47Speaker 4: love my parents and I would love to be together
- 17:49Speaker 4: with them, but not as long as this. So I
- 17:53Speaker 4: think we all need a break. And we're the latch
- 17:55Speaker 4: when they were going home, so we have a break
- 17:57Speaker 4: from each other.
- 17:58Speaker 1: Are there times during the day where you guys kind
- 18:01Speaker 1: of like get a break from each other, maybe like
- 18:04Speaker 1: one person goes off on a walk, or.
- 18:08Speaker 4: Only when we're angry, Okay, so my dad kicks ear
- 18:13Speaker 4: me out of the truck or goes alone out of
- 18:16Speaker 4: the truck, but that's like the only time.
- 18:19Speaker 1: Yeah, it's good to have your own space. And you said,
- 18:21Speaker 1: you got your your bedroom in there and you can
- 18:24Speaker 1: go and have some quiet time, which is good. What
- 18:27Speaker 1: are some things that you really enjoy about life on
- 18:30Speaker 1: the road.
- 18:31Speaker 4: I really enjoy that way that don't see the same
- 18:35Speaker 4: thing every day that we always moved, that I always
- 18:39Speaker 4: see different places almost every day. Yeah, I really enjoy
- 18:44Speaker 4: I enjoy all the animals I see, gold eagle, whale, shark.
- 18:49Speaker 1: Yeah. Do you get a chance to go and visit
- 18:52Speaker 1: any family back home once in a while, Yeah, but
- 18:55Speaker 1: only when my dad.
- 18:57Speaker 4: Has to go to work on the hototofest and then
- 19:01Speaker 4: I can with my friends and my grandma. Oh nice,
- 19:04Speaker 4: one time my grandma obviously just was just in Indonesia
- 19:09Speaker 4: and Bali, but that's the only times.
- 19:13Speaker 1: I must have been a nice visit. Did she have
- 19:15Speaker 1: a good time?
- 19:16Speaker 3: Four star hotel?
- 19:19Speaker 1: Yeah, good stuff.
- 19:21Speaker 3: And I could stay there for two days.
- 19:24Speaker 1: Is there anything that you would want to share about
- 19:27Speaker 1: your experiences on the road or anything you want to
- 19:30Speaker 1: add that I haven't covered. If there are any other
- 19:33Speaker 1: kids out there that are listening that are on the road,
- 19:36Speaker 1: or any other people that are thinking about living on
- 19:39Speaker 1: the road. Do you have any any advice, any advice? Yeah,
- 19:43Speaker 1: or any thoughts?
- 19:44Speaker 3: Did you ever go to Canada always taking springs.
- 19:49Speaker 1: Advice?
- 19:50Speaker 3: It's pretty much. I would want to say.
- 19:52Speaker 1: Well, thank you so much for the great interview. It
- 19:56Speaker 1: was a pleasure for me too, and I loved hearing
- 19:59Speaker 1: about how much you love being in the water and
- 20:03Speaker 1: all the animals you've seen and all the things you're
- 20:06Speaker 1: learning about and everything like that. So thank you so
- 20:09Speaker 1: much for taking the time.
- 20:12Speaker 5: Thank you.
- 20:13Speaker 1: So I'm here with Maria from a Pillow. Thank you
- 20:18Speaker 1: so much for joining me on the Overla dr Old podcast.
- 20:21Speaker 5: Thank you as well for following us and coming down here.
- 20:25Speaker 5: So thank you as well.
- 20:27Speaker 6: Anytime it's my pleasure.
- 20:28Speaker 5: Well, my name is Maria. I'm forty nine years old.
- 20:32Speaker 5: I'm definitely the oldest one in here, including the track.
- 20:35Speaker 5: I was born and raised in Salzburg in Austria, and
- 20:38Speaker 5: I was working my whole life and travel agencies. So
- 20:41Speaker 5: I traveled my whole life, and seventeen years ago we met,
- 20:45Speaker 5: we kept on traveling, and eight nine years ago we
- 20:49Speaker 5: decided doing bigger trips. You know, when you're working, you
- 20:54Speaker 5: just a four or five weeks of holidays, so it
- 20:56Speaker 5: was always not enough. So we decided, I'm finding a
- 20:59Speaker 5: vehicle being bigger trips, and so we decided to buy
- 21:03Speaker 5: this one and we already sat at the World the
- 21:05Speaker 5: last five years now, Increasers and Lenox.
- 21:09Speaker 1: When you started working in the travel industry, were you
- 21:14Speaker 1: always attracted to travel as a kid or why did
- 21:17Speaker 1: you end up going into it as a job.
- 21:20Speaker 5: My parents also traveled a lot with us kids, just
- 21:22Speaker 5: in Europe, you know, always with car, but they traveled
- 21:25Speaker 5: with us. And I love being surrounded by people. I
- 21:29Speaker 5: love seeing new cultures, new landscape. I love languages, the food,
- 21:34Speaker 5: so all these things together, I always loved traveling.
- 21:37Speaker 1: What kind of tricks were you doing when you were
- 21:40Speaker 1: doing that job?
- 21:41Speaker 5: Well, completely different ones like this. Yeah, so you get
- 21:44Speaker 5: invited by two operators, you know, if you do good jobs,
- 21:48Speaker 5: you get invited and they show you for sure and
- 21:50Speaker 5: the best they have, you know, so I was used
- 21:52Speaker 5: to staying five star hotels and totally different. It's cool
- 21:56Speaker 5: as well, you know, because you know another side of
- 22:00Speaker 5: the travel industry. But this all was I think twenty
- 22:03Speaker 5: years ago, so even this world has changed a lot.
- 22:07Speaker 5: I was happy leaving all this behind me because it
- 22:10Speaker 5: changed a lot and I didn't feel comfort anymore. I
- 22:13Speaker 5: loved it for a long time. Now we're traveling like this.
- 22:17Speaker 1: What were the different sides that you saw, Like in
- 22:20Speaker 1: your job, you saw obviously the like high end hotel side,
- 22:24Speaker 1: and everything was planned for you, and you saw what
- 22:27Speaker 1: they wanted you to see in a way. And now
- 22:31Speaker 1: you're seeing it all based on your experiences and being
- 22:34Speaker 1: traveling as a family rather than as an industry person.
- 22:38Speaker 5: Right, well, I see what all this. How do you say,
- 22:41Speaker 5: I see what all the travel industry is doing with
- 22:44Speaker 5: the whole world. You know, I saw behind the scenes.
- 22:48Speaker 5: Now I got it, which I didn't do when I
- 22:51Speaker 5: was young and just traveling, you know, just enjoying the
- 22:55Speaker 5: beautiful and nice things. But now I think all of
- 22:57Speaker 5: us we really realize what it also means traveling for
- 23:02Speaker 5: all of us, you know, what it means for the world,
- 23:05Speaker 5: for the planet, the change. You know, what were some.
- 23:07Speaker 1: Of the biggest or most impactful changes that you noticed
- 23:10Speaker 1: that when you realized, you were like, I don't want
- 23:12Speaker 1: to I don't think.
- 23:13Speaker 5: I want to do this anymore. Well, it's started with
- 23:16Speaker 5: I think when the internet came, you know, it started
- 23:19Speaker 5: only becoming a price matching. No one was any more
- 23:22Speaker 5: interested in information and about cultures or stuff like that.
- 23:26Speaker 5: You know, they just wanted to have the cheapest flight,
- 23:29Speaker 5: the cheapest, cheapest and best hotels. And then I realized, well,
- 23:33Speaker 5: that's not me anymore. I want to tell people more
- 23:36Speaker 5: about places I know, not only look that's the best
- 23:39Speaker 5: five star here. You can get the cheapest pizza. You know,
- 23:42Speaker 5: that's really interesting. Now we use Google maps for that.
- 23:46Speaker 1: What were some of the trips that you did when
- 23:48Speaker 1: you were growing up that were really memorable.
- 23:51Speaker 5: We traveled I have two brothers, so we traveled in
- 23:54Speaker 5: a car to Italy to the beaches. We traveled with
- 23:57Speaker 5: buses fifty persons in it to Spain and Greece, Croatia.
- 24:02Speaker 5: While all these we always went to see it with
- 24:05Speaker 5: my parents here for a week, relatives, nor cousins and
- 24:09Speaker 5: so sometimes twenty people all of us.
- 24:12Speaker 1: It must be really interesting to go back to those
- 24:14Speaker 1: places now, Like you guys went to Croatio when you
- 24:17Speaker 1: first started traveling and you were there as a kid.
- 24:21Speaker 1: That interesting to see or did you kind of not
- 24:23Speaker 1: remember or how is that?
- 24:25Speaker 4: Well?
- 24:25Speaker 5: I'm not sure if I can remember. It's more imagination
- 24:29Speaker 5: how it was twenty years before, you know, because now
- 24:33Speaker 5: I'm already told you forty nine. So I saw some
- 24:36Speaker 5: places in different stages, you know, but everything is changing, Yeah,
- 24:41Speaker 5: everything is becoming more muturi.
- 24:43Speaker 1: And I think it's important as a traveler or as
- 24:47Speaker 1: a tourist to think about those things and think about
- 24:50Speaker 1: where your money's going. And I think a lot of people,
- 24:53Speaker 1: you know, they, especially in North America, we may only
- 24:56Speaker 1: get two weeks of vacation time, and how can we
- 25:00Speaker 1: make this the cheapest fastest? I know, I know, yeah, maybe.
- 25:05Speaker 5: That's and it's okay, you know, if you only have
- 25:07Speaker 5: got this time in a year, it's okay. But I
- 25:10Speaker 5: think you really should think about it a bit more
- 25:12Speaker 5: than just going there doing all the highlights, spending your money.
- 25:16Speaker 5: Then next year coming back, maybe you know, you should
- 25:20Speaker 5: think a bit more about it. Yeah, what's going on?
- 25:23Speaker 5: What about the people? And but it's a totally different
- 25:26Speaker 5: kind of experience, you know, being on a foreign in
- 25:30Speaker 5: a foreign country for two weeks, or if you have
- 25:32Speaker 5: time and really can travel and experience it, so yess
- 25:37Speaker 5: it goes deeper when you have the time.
- 25:39Speaker 1: Yes, So absolutely, What are some experiences that you've had that,
- 25:44Speaker 1: you felt like you went deeper, You went to that
- 25:47Speaker 1: level because you had the time in that place.
- 25:50Speaker 5: While we are traveling now. Yeah, sure, yeah, yeah, definitely.
- 25:53Speaker 5: I think it started with Central Asia, okay, and peak
- 25:57Speaker 5: maybe was in Indonesia. You know, when you're on hotspots
- 26:01Speaker 5: like Ballei, you know you have to see it. You know,
- 26:04Speaker 5: you can't close your eyes because it's everywhere. They littered
- 26:07Speaker 5: the garbage everywhere, and front beach lines, the nice coffee shops.
- 26:11Speaker 5: You know, it doesn't work together. So if you don't
- 26:14Speaker 5: start sinking seeing all these, something is wrong with See.
- 26:18Speaker 5: In my opinion, I don't know how to enjoy holiday
- 26:21Speaker 5: in a five star hotel and behind people are starving
- 26:24Speaker 5: and the garbage is big. You know, I don't know
- 26:27Speaker 5: how it works.
- 26:27Speaker 6: Yeah, tell me more about that dichotomy that you see.
- 26:31Speaker 5: Well, it was for me, it was because I'm always
- 26:33Speaker 5: more in animals. For me, it was Borneo when we
- 26:37Speaker 5: saw your anger tanks. You know, we saw them in sanctuaries,
- 26:41Speaker 5: which is cool as well, but we also got to
- 26:43Speaker 5: see us in wild ones and thinking about that this
- 26:45Speaker 5: maybe could be the only ones, the last ones, and
- 26:48Speaker 5: we were allowed to see them. That gives you a
- 26:51Speaker 5: great feeling, you know, and then we started. You know,
- 26:54Speaker 5: he has a drone and it's amazing in a way
- 26:57Speaker 5: how to see it from above, you know, because when
- 26:59Speaker 5: it's traveling, everything is green, and you know, you think
- 27:02Speaker 5: you're in the deepest jungle ever. But from the view
- 27:05Speaker 5: from above you can see it's all palm oil. You know.
- 27:09Speaker 5: You really start toreazing, and then you start realizing all
- 27:13Speaker 5: your surroundings. You know, you see all the trucks with
- 27:16Speaker 5: the fruits, and people working on the fields and the burning.
- 27:21Speaker 5: So yeah, this was a very emotional moment too, everything
- 27:26Speaker 5: in the water, especially when I saw Lennox. You know,
- 27:28Speaker 5: he's the aquaman in our family, and swimming and surfing
- 27:34Speaker 5: and snorkeling around corals which are dying doesn't make fun,
- 27:38Speaker 5: you know. And he knows exactly what's going on, so
- 27:42Speaker 5: he's not one of the kids, Oh mom, look I
- 27:45Speaker 5: see a fish, So he knows what's going on. And
- 27:48Speaker 5: it continues, you know, if he once realize that the
- 27:51Speaker 5: world is running away, it shouldn't I think. You can't
- 27:54Speaker 5: stop thinking about it. You know, yes, I don't know.
- 27:58Speaker 1: What I do.
- 28:00Speaker 6: Is there anything I can do?
- 28:01Speaker 5: You know, you start rethinking about your way of living here, right,
- 28:06Speaker 5: you should.
- 28:07Speaker 1: What are some I mean obviously you guys have thought
- 28:10Speaker 1: a lot about your way of living, in your way
- 28:13Speaker 1: of life, and the planet is very important to you.
- 28:17Speaker 1: I can tell what are some ways that you felt
- 28:20Speaker 1: like in your day to day life. There's a way
- 28:23Speaker 1: that you can I don't know, make your impact of
- 28:25Speaker 1: bit less.
- 28:26Speaker 5: You mean, what what we are doing or by the.
- 28:28Speaker 1: Nature of it. You're not in a house, you're not
- 28:30Speaker 1: using electricity, you're not using a lot of water.
- 28:33Speaker 5: Yeah, I know, that's a that's the question. You know.
- 28:37Speaker 5: The first thing when people are seeing as it's the
- 28:39Speaker 5: old truck, you know, so, and that's their common sense.
- 28:43Speaker 5: Old truck, you destroying the planet, you know, because you
- 28:46Speaker 5: need lots of fuel. Yes, they're right in a way,
- 28:49Speaker 5: but that's not the only thing. You know. This truck
- 28:51Speaker 5: is nearly fifty years old, so it's recycled. We have
- 28:55Speaker 5: solar panels. And in the end, if you metch a
- 28:58Speaker 5: normal household, and I think we're better maybe than them. Well,
- 29:02Speaker 5: for sure, we use planes and this one goes on vessels.
- 29:06Speaker 5: But in the end, so I don't feel bad.
- 29:09Speaker 1: One time I added up all the kilometers that Richard
- 29:12Speaker 1: and I drove South America and it was equal to
- 29:15Speaker 1: the number of kilometers that somebody in North America drives
- 29:18Speaker 1: in a year.
- 29:18Speaker 5: Yeah, okay, yeah, okayding right.
- 29:22Speaker 1: Because people have really some people have hours and hours
- 29:25Speaker 1: of communing. Its interesting to think about, for sure. When
- 29:28Speaker 1: you first decided to travel by vehicle. Was it a
- 29:32Speaker 1: decision that you guys made together. Was it Andrew's idea?
- 29:35Speaker 1: Did you have it as an idea?
- 29:37Speaker 6: Like, how did that come together as a plan?
- 29:41Speaker 5: I love traveling, but he definitely came up with the idea.
- 29:46Speaker 5: The goal was going to New Zealand. It was always
- 29:49Speaker 5: on top of our traveling list. And then me being
- 29:51Speaker 5: in a travel agency, you know, I knew exactly. Flight
- 29:54Speaker 5: came bla. It was too expensive for all three of us,
- 29:57Speaker 5: and then you want to stay longer? No, not only
- 30:01Speaker 5: five weeks. We decided, well, maybe we're looking for a
- 30:04Speaker 5: vehicle and drive down there step by step, you know.
- 30:07Speaker 5: But definitely he was the one pushing pushing it.
- 30:10Speaker 1: When you were talking to theater, you were saying that
- 30:12Speaker 1: there weren't as many kind of overlands specific blogs or
- 30:16Speaker 1: vehicle truck building blogs to look at. So how did
- 30:19Speaker 1: you guys kind of figure out, Oh, it's actually possible
- 30:22Speaker 1: to drive there.
- 30:23Speaker 6: Did you just see somebody else do it or did.
- 30:25Speaker 1: You think of it yourself because flying is expensive or
- 30:29Speaker 1: do you remember was it just like let's drive?
- 30:31Speaker 5: No, And you're right, there was not that much you
- 30:34Speaker 5: can could read about it. So what's the best way
- 30:37Speaker 5: to go to or what do you recommend? You know, so,
- 30:41Speaker 5: I don't know why we decided to go the east side?
- 30:45Speaker 5: Was the plan going to New Zealand, so we drove
- 30:48Speaker 5: east and during the trip it wasn't possible anymore to
- 30:51Speaker 5: do the route we have planned because Thailand was closed
- 30:55Speaker 5: and for some reasons, so we had to decide what
- 30:58Speaker 5: to do. So it's the whole east side to Vladivostok
- 31:02Speaker 5: and then yeah, step by step, so we had to
- 31:05Speaker 5: change plants very often.
- 31:07Speaker 1: What were some of the most memorable experiences on that
- 31:11Speaker 1: kind of silk road Central Asia?
- 31:14Speaker 5: And yeah, right, yeah, right, yeah, Well the Silk Cross
- 31:23Speaker 5: is just amazing. When you see people running around, smiling,
- 31:28Speaker 5: kids are waving and you and you see their homes
- 31:31Speaker 5: and the places they live. You know, they live such
- 31:34Speaker 5: a simple life, but they are yeah, they're definitely more
- 31:38Speaker 5: happy than we are being in this amazing landscape, you know,
- 31:41Speaker 5: the Cheekistan, the mountains, you know, it's incredible. Russia is
- 31:47Speaker 5: like you think Russies. You know, the people are kind
- 31:51Speaker 5: of rude, but you need to go deeper and then
- 31:53Speaker 5: they're super super friendly. We figured out they do need
- 31:57Speaker 5: vodka for surviving in Russia. Japan was amazing. We've been
- 32:02Speaker 5: there in winter. Skiing is incredible. I always didn't know
- 32:05Speaker 5: when people were talking, Oh, there's snow in Japan, it's amazing.
- 32:09Speaker 5: I always thought snow is snow, but it's not. Yeah,
- 32:12Speaker 5: Indonesia being a year besides the ocean and the culture,
- 32:16Speaker 5: you know, the food and.
- 32:18Speaker 1: In Japan, what's the uniqueness of the powder there the
- 32:22Speaker 1: Japan they say.
- 32:23Speaker 5: Right, I don't know, it feels different.
- 32:26Speaker 1: So you guys went through Iran, what was your experience
- 32:30Speaker 1: like there as a female?
- 32:31Speaker 5: First of all, Iran is a it's a beautiful country,
- 32:35Speaker 5: but for women it's a bit well. I experienced it
- 32:38Speaker 5: like that. It's it's definitely harder than for men. You
- 32:42Speaker 5: have to cover your whole body, you have to wear
- 32:44Speaker 5: a heat shop, you know, and well it depends on
- 32:46Speaker 5: the area, the noise. It's very religious, so you even
- 32:50Speaker 5: have to wear this black a booker. There's so many
- 32:54Speaker 5: different names. Yeah, so, and you're not, you know, coming
- 32:58Speaker 5: from Europe or so many other places you used to
- 33:01Speaker 5: be a woman, you know, but you don't count there.
- 33:04Speaker 5: So I have one story. We went into a bazaar
- 33:08Speaker 5: buying some stuff and I paid the guy and he
- 33:11Speaker 5: went out of the shop with the change to him
- 33:13Speaker 5: and gave the change to him and not to me.
- 33:16Speaker 5: So he let me standing in the shop completely alone.
- 33:19Speaker 1: You know.
- 33:19Speaker 5: They don't talk to you really well, it depends. There
- 33:23Speaker 5: are exceptions as well, but normally no one is talking
- 33:27Speaker 5: to you. You're always walking behind your husband and stuff
- 33:31Speaker 5: like that, and you need to get used to it.
- 33:33Speaker 5: You know. It's hard because I know people thirty forty
- 33:38Speaker 5: years before it was like here, you know. And I
- 33:41Speaker 5: know we talked to so many people and women are
- 33:44Speaker 5: not happy over there cell and under their worker. They
- 33:47Speaker 5: are dressed like you and me, you know. So it's
- 33:51Speaker 5: the two worlds, you know. They one there living out
- 33:54Speaker 5: of the house and they want to live inside with
- 33:56Speaker 5: their families. So and I think it's hard living like that.
- 34:00Speaker 5: You can't be yourself.
- 34:02Speaker 1: Were there moments where you had an experience that was
- 34:07Speaker 1: different from the males you were traveling with because you
- 34:11Speaker 1: were a woman, Like did you get invited into somebody's house,
- 34:15Speaker 1: have a different experience relive.
- 34:17Speaker 5: It's I think Lennox is opening up doors as well,
- 34:19Speaker 5: you know.
- 34:20Speaker 6: Sure, so they love families over there.
- 34:23Speaker 5: Yeah, and the Iranians they do you know, they can't
- 34:26Speaker 5: leave the country, so it's very, very hard for them
- 34:29Speaker 5: to cross the border. They do this to the tourists
- 34:32Speaker 5: because they expect they're doing the same for them when
- 34:35Speaker 5: they're visiting the country. You know, we told them, well, man,
- 34:39Speaker 5: try it, come to Salzburg and knock at the door.
- 34:42Speaker 5: I don't know if it will if that will happen.
- 34:44Speaker 5: So yeah, but they're super friendly. It is so nice,
- 34:48Speaker 5: but it's too much in a way. You know, no
- 34:51Speaker 5: means no, no, thank you, but they don't accept gotcha. Yeah,
- 34:56Speaker 5: that makes it hard sometimes.
- 34:57Speaker 1: Did you go for dinner at somebody times? Ah?
- 35:00Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, okay, yeah. Yeah. When we arrived in Iran,
- 35:03Speaker 5: there was Norris Festival. It's kind of New Year, is
- 35:06Speaker 5: it New Year? The Uranian New Year? So and the
- 35:09Speaker 5: Uranians they like to go out and having barbecue and
- 35:12Speaker 5: so all the parks they are full with locals. So
- 35:15Speaker 5: we parked the front of front of these parks, and
- 35:18Speaker 5: we get invited from all the families.
- 35:21Speaker 1: You know.
- 35:21Speaker 5: Sometimes they really started fighting. So yeah, and they all
- 35:25Speaker 5: wanted us to sleep in their house. And because they
- 35:28Speaker 5: have air condition, you know, and we don't. So it's
- 35:32Speaker 5: really nice.
- 35:33Speaker 6: It gets pretty hot in Iran, obviously, But.
- 35:35Speaker 1: I was hearing a little story about t when you
- 35:39Speaker 1: guys were in the desert and it was fifty degrees celsius.
- 35:43Speaker 5: You get stuck, right, Yeah.
- 35:45Speaker 1: Tell me a little bit about that experience.
- 35:47Speaker 5: Well, it was his idea. He wanted to go into
- 35:49Speaker 5: the desert, and we didn't have a good map, just
- 35:52Speaker 5: a few pictures I think I can't remember, and we
- 35:54Speaker 5: didn't go very fine into the desert, and then we
- 35:57Speaker 5: got stuck. So it was super hot outside, I think
- 36:01Speaker 5: really forty five fifty degrees. We couldn't make it out,
- 36:04Speaker 5: so we had to shovel and dig and use the sandplate.
- 36:08Speaker 5: Well we tried before without the sandplight plates, but didn't work.
- 36:12Speaker 5: And in the meantime a sandstorm was coming up, so
- 36:16Speaker 5: it felt like hundreds thousands of meals are hitting your skin.
- 36:20Speaker 5: So but in the end, yeah, we made it totally sweaty, dirty, exhausted,
- 36:25Speaker 5: full of pain. We jumped into the truck at land exposent. Yeah,
- 36:29Speaker 5: well can it go on? Now? What have you done outside?
- 36:32Speaker 1: You know?
- 36:33Speaker 5: So he didn't realize, but it was really yeah, I
- 36:36Speaker 5: had chopped.
- 36:37Speaker 6: Yeah, that must have been stressful.
- 36:39Speaker 1: The elements though, it's you're living outside and the weather
- 36:43Speaker 1: is changing depending what region you're in, and you may
- 36:45Speaker 1: not be in the best time of year to be there.
- 36:48Speaker 6: When you guys first started out, were.
- 36:50Speaker 1: You kind of planning quite a bit or were you
- 36:53Speaker 1: leaving things a bit loose and going with the flow.
- 36:57Speaker 1: Has that changed?
- 36:59Speaker 5: Yeah, I think it has changed several times. So it
- 37:03Speaker 5: took us a while to figure out how it works.
- 37:07Speaker 5: How to live in a truck. You know, nobody knew
- 37:09Speaker 5: what to do. When do we when should we get
- 37:12Speaker 5: up breakfast? We didn't know. Lots of talking was necessary
- 37:17Speaker 5: and we slowed down, but we had to figure out everything.
- 37:21Speaker 5: When to work, when to do school work? Do you
- 37:24Speaker 5: have to do it every day?
- 37:26Speaker 1: You know?
- 37:26Speaker 5: It's in the end, it's a normal life like everywhere,
- 37:30Speaker 5: and you need to learn by yourself what's important for you,
- 37:33Speaker 5: what works best for your family. But it took us
- 37:36Speaker 5: a while. To go into it, and during the trip
- 37:38Speaker 5: it changed several times. So I think we're still too
- 37:42Speaker 5: fast to experience the cantle and to have time for
- 37:46Speaker 5: each other, you know, but bureaucracy and stuff like that
- 37:49Speaker 5: doesn't allow really traveling like you want.
- 37:52Speaker 1: You know what has been kind of a good balance
- 37:56Speaker 1: in terms of that for you guys. Since you say
- 37:59Speaker 1: this change a little bit and you're kind of getting
- 38:01Speaker 1: closer to it, does that mean you have a little
- 38:05Speaker 1: bit of a schedule or no schedule.
- 38:07Speaker 5: Or I think you need a bit of Yeah, you
- 38:09Speaker 5: need a bit of a schedule and a bit of
- 38:11Speaker 5: a routine. I think you should plan also the next
- 38:15Speaker 5: days coming what to do we do most of the
- 38:19Speaker 5: time and Lenoxy sleeping. We discuss what we do the
- 38:22Speaker 5: next couple of days. So, but we do have a routine. Yeah,
- 38:25Speaker 5: in a way.
- 38:25Speaker 6: What are some things that you guys do every day?
- 38:28Speaker 1: Obviously eating, you know, but are there certain things that
- 38:31Speaker 1: you've intentionally decided to do every day?
- 38:34Speaker 5: Well, you know, most of the time, every day looks different.
- 38:37Speaker 5: But I think I really love is having dinner all
- 38:40Speaker 5: sweet together. I don't know, it's hard to say every
- 38:44Speaker 5: day is so different because you're right, well, we try
- 38:48Speaker 5: to figure out to do stuff what we all three
- 38:51Speaker 5: of us are interested in, which is not that easy
- 38:54Speaker 5: all the time.
- 38:54Speaker 1: So does everybody have kind of differen things very interesting?
- 38:58Speaker 5: It's changing.
- 39:00Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 39:01Speaker 5: No, in the end, we most of the time do
- 39:03Speaker 5: like the same things. Okay, you know it's hard. You're
- 39:07Speaker 5: going somewhere and then suddenly you have to climb cast
- 39:10Speaker 5: there the rocks, you have to hide cast their the mountains.
- 39:13Speaker 5: You have to die because here's the sea. Yes, but
- 39:16Speaker 5: what is if I'm not in the mood you know,
- 39:19Speaker 5: which happens sometimes, you know. But in the end, it's
- 39:23Speaker 5: super cool being on spots where you can do all
- 39:26Speaker 5: the different stuff.
- 39:27Speaker 1: Are there any specific dishes or recipes that you have
- 39:32Speaker 1: all picked up from your travels?
- 39:35Speaker 5: Well, there are definitely some approach from at home and
- 39:38Speaker 5: we still love them. So I don't know if he
- 39:42Speaker 5: talked about Ostrian kaisisman.
- 39:44Speaker 1: No.
- 39:45Speaker 5: No, it's a sweet thing. It's a dessert and it's
- 39:49Speaker 5: most of the time it's served in sky challenge right
- 39:53Speaker 5: after skiing. You know, it's really nice. What is it like,
- 39:57Speaker 5: it's some kind of a pancake, but you slice it
- 40:02Speaker 5: and put apple and apples and raisins in it and
- 40:06Speaker 5: then roasted a bit. So but it's pretty similar too
- 40:09Speaker 5: to pancakes.
- 40:10Speaker 6: Do you make that?
- 40:12Speaker 5: Yeah, and this one went well all the time when
- 40:15Speaker 5: people helped us, you know what could we offer them
- 40:17Speaker 5: except being thankful, you know, So we started making a
- 40:22Speaker 5: kaiss mode for them to show them. Well, that's an
- 40:25Speaker 5: ods to and dish. We really hope you enjoy it
- 40:28Speaker 5: and thanks for everything, you know. So this one went
- 40:32Speaker 5: around the world with us. So I made it so
- 40:35Speaker 5: often sometimes just for them.
- 40:38Speaker 1: It's sounding familiar. I feel like it was in an
- 40:41Speaker 1: issue of Overland.
- 40:42Speaker 5: Your area, right, chef, right, right.
- 40:48Speaker 6: I remember what you wrote about Yeah, right, so that's
- 40:51Speaker 6: really lovely.
- 40:52Speaker 5: Lennox talked about Japanese family they added with chopsticks as well.
- 40:58Speaker 6: It's funny to see are their foods.
- 41:01Speaker 5: Yeah, there's some some ingredients that can't find and samolina semolina. Yeah,
- 41:08Speaker 5: so I don't know. Well, I think you need to
- 41:10Speaker 5: go in in really special shops to find. But well,
- 41:14Speaker 5: I'm not happy with your sauce with sausage and cheese.
- 41:16Speaker 5: It doesn't take like at home. It's the same in Australia.
- 41:20Speaker 5: I don't blame Canada or the US, so it's the
- 41:23Speaker 5: same thing in Australia.
- 41:24Speaker 1: So you're not the first person who's told me that. Now, yes,
- 41:29Speaker 1: there have been other European overliners, like so what's it
- 41:32Speaker 1: in their cheese and why it is so expensive?
- 41:35Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 41:35Speaker 1: Right?
- 41:36Speaker 6: Is it pumpkins super.
- 41:39Speaker 5: Too, really good with Yeah, it was with coconut milk
- 41:45Speaker 5: and then wastloodling. That's the dish I brought from austro
- 41:49Speaker 5: as well. After a long driving day, it fills your
- 41:52Speaker 5: stomach and you're fine.
- 41:54Speaker 1: So I love it. I feel like we could do
- 41:58Speaker 1: an oval and journal food podcasts and I could just
- 42:01Speaker 1: do that.
- 42:02Speaker 5: There's so many things because you asked about dishes from
- 42:04Speaker 5: other countries. I always love going in foreign kitchens and
- 42:09Speaker 5: watching what the women are doing or even I'm allowed
- 42:12Speaker 5: to help, and it's more about you know, in Indonesia,
- 42:15Speaker 5: I was in a kitchen. I even could realize it's
- 42:18Speaker 5: a kitchen, you know, and she they show you things
- 42:21Speaker 5: you can't make. You know, you can't find the ingredients
- 42:24Speaker 5: or the fruits or the wedges they use. It's just
- 42:27Speaker 5: amazing watching and trying after it.
- 42:30Speaker 6: They must have had a lot of fresh everything.
- 42:32Speaker 5: And yeah, yeah, starting with Indonesia, Yeah, in Central Asia,
- 42:38Speaker 5: it's hard to get it's hard to find fresh stuff, right.
- 42:42Speaker 5: They don't have supermarkets like we are used to, so
- 42:45Speaker 5: it's hard.
- 42:46Speaker 1: So were you mostly going to small markets there talking
- 42:50Speaker 1: up on canned and potatoes.
- 42:52Speaker 5: You know, we always try to cook fresh and well,
- 42:56Speaker 5: it depends totally on the country. You know, I don't
- 42:59Speaker 5: want to spend days for looking for good food. You know,
- 43:04Speaker 5: you could spend hours on that. Most of the time
- 43:06Speaker 5: we go to normal supermarkets in Central Asia. In Central
- 43:11Speaker 5: Asia they're in a supermarkets. They're just wooden checks that
- 43:15Speaker 5: you are lucky to buy half of a cucumber or
- 43:18Speaker 5: maybe bottle of milk. So they're not one hundred thousands
- 43:22Speaker 5: of different milk things, you know, just one milk, one tomato,
- 43:27Speaker 5: maybe three potatoes. That's the god that work.
- 43:32Speaker 6: What did you make or how did.
- 43:33Speaker 5: You Well, the kitchen needs to be more simple, you know, yes,
- 43:37Speaker 5: for sure, it's just if you use that you can
- 43:39Speaker 5: buy your stuff every day freshly, you can cook like this.
- 43:43Speaker 5: But if you only have potatoes and carrots and maybe
- 43:46Speaker 5: noodles and rice.
- 43:47Speaker 1: So that's what you have, Yeah, you can get creative.
- 43:50Speaker 5: I guess in a way.
- 43:51Speaker 1: It must have been interesting to come back after that
- 43:55Speaker 1: trepid or a specific area that's like in the central
- 43:58Speaker 1: inter section and go in to a.
- 44:00Speaker 5: Supermarket, like a big superman bit, yeah.
- 44:03Speaker 6: And see like forty seven different types of juecased.
- 44:06Speaker 5: It's shopping sometimes, Yeah.
- 44:08Speaker 6: How did that feel for you?
- 44:09Speaker 1: When?
- 44:10Speaker 5: Yeah, well I don't know what to buy? You know,
- 44:11Speaker 5: there is I just want to have milk, and you
- 44:14Speaker 5: standing in front of it for hours. It's can milk
- 44:16Speaker 5: one percent, two percent, three percent. I don't get it.
- 44:19Speaker 5: I don't understand by people why we need all of this,
- 44:23Speaker 5: you know, why isn't just milk enough? I don't know.
- 44:27Speaker 5: I don't get it.
- 44:28Speaker 1: I have that same experience coming back. I was in
- 44:31Speaker 1: the US and we had finished our time American trip,
- 44:34Speaker 1: and I went into one of the grocery stores.
- 44:35Speaker 6: And I was like, oh my goodness.
- 44:37Speaker 1: Yeah, like indecision or decision fatigue.
- 44:40Speaker 6: I don't know if that's the thing.
- 44:41Speaker 1: But it was.
- 44:42Speaker 5: Sometimes it happens. Sometimes you're so overwhelmed that you just
- 44:46Speaker 5: leave your trolley and get out.
- 44:48Speaker 6: So interesting.
- 44:49Speaker 5: I never go shopping when you're hungry.
- 44:51Speaker 1: That's just a good life advice. Tell me a little
- 44:54Speaker 1: bit about your role in the education program with Lenox
- 44:59Speaker 1: because he was thinking about how are you teaching some things?
- 45:03Speaker 5: Well, I started with him four years ago. I'm doing
- 45:07Speaker 5: the basics, so I always buy the books concerning the
- 45:11Speaker 5: great he is. So he did great the last couple
- 45:16Speaker 5: of years. Because of Corona. We had to ship back
- 45:19Speaker 5: two years ago and he attended a public school there
- 45:22Speaker 5: for eight months and he had no problems. You know,
- 45:25Speaker 5: he really is doing great and well he already explained it.
- 45:30Speaker 5: We're not doing it on a daily base. It depends,
- 45:34Speaker 5: as he already mentioned. We haven't done it for a
- 45:37Speaker 5: long time right now, but we made a commitment when
- 45:39Speaker 5: we're back at home in Austria for months from Monday
- 45:41Speaker 5: to Friday, like all the other kids being at school
- 45:45Speaker 5: with the school work as well, and it's one by one,
- 45:47Speaker 5: you know, it's way faster. So and I can see
- 45:51Speaker 5: way faster where he has problems and we can work
- 45:54Speaker 5: on that. Yes, so the basics is my part, so
- 45:58Speaker 5: mess and German and we started with biology, but we
- 46:02Speaker 5: are doing it out of the books and they are
- 46:04Speaker 5: doing well. History, geography, I think he already explained.
- 46:08Speaker 1: Yes, yeah, what are some of the challenges and some
- 46:12Speaker 1: of the rewards of a homeschool program.
- 46:16Speaker 5: Well, it had to be being the moment the teacher
- 46:18Speaker 5: at the same time, you know, because I saw him
- 46:21Speaker 5: when he was at school. You know, my teacher said.
- 46:24Speaker 5: My teacher said, I think he's never going up. My
- 46:27Speaker 5: mom said, you know, that's sometime a problem. But you
- 46:31Speaker 5: can enjoy everything so much more. You know, there's no
- 46:34Speaker 5: pressure about time, about homework because you're deciding when and
- 46:38Speaker 5: what so, and that's priceless. I think, good balance. We
- 46:41Speaker 5: can travel whenever we want. We don't need daycares. It's
- 46:45Speaker 5: really cool.
- 46:45Speaker 1: That's great.
- 46:46Speaker 5: But like he said, it's also the other side being
- 46:49Speaker 5: together twenty four hours, seven days a week. It's challenging here.
- 46:53Speaker 1: How do you take breaks?
- 46:55Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 46:56Speaker 1: Do you take breaks? Yeah? I think how do you do?
- 47:01Speaker 5: Yeah? I think I'm the one who needs time any
- 47:05Speaker 5: time for myself. I think they don't need it that
- 47:09Speaker 5: much like I do. But I love being alone. So
- 47:12Speaker 5: it's sometimes hard. But in the end, I think we're
- 47:15Speaker 5: a good team. So we know and see what the
- 47:19Speaker 5: other one needs at the moment, and give him room
- 47:22Speaker 5: or space so we can talk to each other. And
- 47:25Speaker 5: if I see he's on I don't know, exploding, I
- 47:28Speaker 5: can send him so and vice versa. So it's hard,
- 47:32Speaker 5: you know, because especially Central Asia, it was so beautiful,
- 47:36Speaker 5: but you only get thirty days. The countries are huge
- 47:39Speaker 5: and the roads are not like this, and you want
- 47:42Speaker 5: to stay longer, you know, but you can't. So you
- 47:45Speaker 5: have to go on and go on. Bureaucracies chasing you definitely,
- 47:50Speaker 5: and countries where visas to exist. And also, you know,
- 47:54Speaker 5: it's not having a break for yourself, it's also a
- 47:58Speaker 5: break for the family. It's hard. You know. We just
- 48:01Speaker 5: parked here. I was just preparing breakfast and someone knocked
- 48:05Speaker 5: at the door and started talking. I told you, I'm sorry,
- 48:08Speaker 5: I just want to make breakfast. Maybe later, you know.
- 48:11Speaker 5: But in a way, they all think they are the
- 48:13Speaker 5: first ones, and they are all asking since five years
- 48:16Speaker 5: the same questions, you know. And this is destroying your
- 48:19Speaker 5: privacy as well in a way, because sometimes you're lucky
- 48:21Speaker 5: and found a beautiful place and then someone is coming
- 48:25Speaker 5: and started you know, it's not well, the tour begins,
- 48:28Speaker 5: the tour begins, right, Yeah, Sometimes you're in a mood
- 48:31Speaker 5: you love it, and it depends who is talking to you.
- 48:34Speaker 5: But in the end, it kills your privacy as well
- 48:37Speaker 5: in a way.
- 48:38Speaker 1: Sure, especially in the populated area.
- 48:40Speaker 5: Right, yeah, good for That's why we are complaining about
- 48:44Speaker 5: Canada at the moment, you know, because it's so hard
- 48:46Speaker 5: for us to find the spot where it could be
- 48:48Speaker 5: just this real fest, you know, hopefully soon. And that's
- 48:52Speaker 5: the next one. Why are we blaming all the people?
- 48:55Speaker 5: You know, we are exactly like them. We just want
- 48:58Speaker 5: to have fun in a beautifully area, you know. So
- 49:02Speaker 5: it's all so sure.
- 49:05Speaker 1: Thank you, thank you so much for taking the time
- 49:08Speaker 1: and everything.
- 49:10Speaker 5: I appreciate that so much. Again, thank you well, thank you.
- 49:14Speaker 1: So much for being on the Overland Journal podcast, and
- 49:18Speaker 1: thank you to all the listeners for taking the time
- 49:21Speaker 1: to listen.
- 49:22Speaker 6: And we'll catch you next time.
- 49:24Speaker 1: Thanks
