- 0:00Speaker 1: Here's the easy version of this week. Notre Dame is
- 0:04Speaker 1: a 30 point favorite. Navy is two and five. The
- 0:08Speaker 1: Irish have owned this series for decades. The midshipmen haven't
- 0:11Speaker 1: beaten them since 2016. You just show up, win big,
- 0:16Speaker 1: get out of this one healthy, and then turn the
- 0:18Speaker 1: page to Miami. I think that's the easy version. And
- 0:23Speaker 1: it's the version that typically gets teams beat in this
- 0:27Speaker 1: exact spot. Now, I don't really think I'm going to
- 0:30Speaker 1: try and sell you on the fact that Navy could
- 0:32Speaker 1: actually beat Notre Dame this weekend. But this isn't just
- 0:37Speaker 1: a game against Navy. It's the first game that Notre
- 0:40Speaker 1: Dame has played since Provo. Since the spike, since the
- 0:43Speaker 1: goal line, since 16 straight wins became one painful loss
- 0:48Speaker 1: and a statement from the Big 12 admitting that the
- 0:50Speaker 1: clock was wrong and you should have had one more chance.
- 0:54Speaker 1: It's been two weeks of film. It's been two weeks
- 0:56Speaker 1: of questions. It's been two weeks of being told, again,
- 1:00Speaker 1: that Notre Dame doesn't show up when it matters. So
- 1:03Speaker 1: what does this team look like when it walks back
- 1:06Speaker 1: onto a field? That is the Real Game Saturday. This
- 1:10Speaker 1: is College Football Addiction. We are presented by PrizePix, and
- 1:13Speaker 1: we're thankful that you've joined us today. I want to
- 1:16Speaker 1: start with where we have left off with Notre Dame.
- 1:18Speaker 1: October 17th, Pro Bowl, Utah. Notre Dame comes in at No.
- 1:21Speaker 1: 2 in the country. Georgia had already lost to Auburn
- 1:24Speaker 1: earlier that day. The number one spot in the nation
- 1:28Speaker 1: was sitting right there and the Irish couldn't take it.
- 1:32Speaker 1: BYU won 28 to 24. Bear Bachmeier ran for two touchdowns.
- 1:37Speaker 1: He threw for another and he caught one as well.
- 1:39Speaker 1: The first quarterback since Steve Young in the 1983 Holiday
- 1:44Speaker 1: Bowl to pull off that trifecta. Afterward, he said that
- 1:47Speaker 1: Notre Dame had disrespected him and his family in recruiting.
- 1:51Speaker 1: And I don't know if there's truth to that. I
- 1:53Speaker 1: saw Notre Dame people say some things on both sides,
- 1:56Speaker 1: agreed and disagreed.
- 1:57Speaker 2: It doesn't matter. He played like it.
- 1:59Speaker 1: He certainly thought that that was the case and the
- 2:02Speaker 1: way that he played showed it. Here's the thing about
- 2:05Speaker 1: that loss. Notre Dame didn't get blown out. They didn't
- 2:07Speaker 1: get physically dominated. They certainly didn't win in the trenches.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Like I thought they would, they moved the ball for sure.
- 2:14Speaker 1: BYU lost the turnover battle, but they still won And
- 2:18Speaker 1: I think that's what makes it sting. Notre Dame trailed
- 2:20Speaker 1: 21 to 10 at the half. The first half defense
- 2:24Speaker 1: was soft. There was a lot of cushion. There was
- 2:26Speaker 1: too many free releases. There was nobody was ready for
- 2:30Speaker 1: the trickery that would come. You had a guy ejected
- 2:34Speaker 1: for targeting on the very first drive. And after that,
- 2:37Speaker 1: the pass rush was pretty much gone. Then came the
- 2:40Speaker 1: moment that everybody is going to remember. End of the
- 2:43Speaker 1: first half, Notre Dame driving down at the BYU 5.
- 2:46Speaker 1: A CJ Carr attempt at a spike ends up being
- 2:49Speaker 1: ruled a fumble. BYU recovers, and a two-score game stays
- 2:53Speaker 1: just that. It was only the second turnover Notre Dame
- 2:56Speaker 1: had committed all season. Worst possible place, worst possible time
- 2:59Speaker 1: for one. Second half, a lot better. Chris Ashe's defense
- 3:03Speaker 1: settled in. They mixed up coverages. They tackled, took away explosives.
- 3:07Speaker 1: You stuffed a fake punt. BYU helped you out with
- 3:11Speaker 1: a muffed punt. You went three of three on field goals.
- 3:16Speaker 1: Walton plowed in from three yards out with 931 to go.
- 3:19Speaker 1: Notre Dame finally had the lead in the second half.
- 3:23Speaker 1: You had a pick of Bachmeier at the Irish 15
- 3:25Speaker 1: with just over eight minutes to go. Notre Dame had
- 3:28Speaker 1: the lead, had the ball, and had the game.
- 3:30Speaker 2: And then a three and out.
- 3:32Speaker 1: BYU gets the ball back. drives 55 yards in 10 plays,
- 3:37Speaker 1: finds Walker Lyons from six yards out with a minute
- 3:40Speaker 1: 47 to go. You guys answer, you hit throws, you
- 3:43Speaker 1: convert fourth downs, you get to the BYU nine with
- 3:46Speaker 1: four seconds left, incomplete in the end zone, game over.
- 3:50Speaker 1: Except the Big 12 later said time remained on the
- 3:52Speaker 1: clock when that ball hit the ground. Notre Dame should
- 3:54Speaker 1: have probably had one more shot. It doesn't matter now.
- 3:57Speaker 1: The result is going to stand. Marcus Freeman's response said
- 4:01Speaker 1: it pretty plainly afterward. We had them on the ropes
- 4:04Speaker 1: and we couldn't find a way to finish. And to me,
- 4:06Speaker 1: that sentence is the whole story. And it leads perfectly
- 4:08Speaker 1: to where we are for this Saturday. What do we
- 4:12Speaker 1: want to see? Not just a final score. Notre Dame
- 4:14Speaker 1: is going to beat Navy. Everybody knows that. What I
- 4:18Speaker 1: want to see is whether or not the bye week
- 4:20Speaker 1: actually fixed anything. Here are the three things that are
- 4:25Speaker 1: going to matter when you watch Notre Dame Navy this weekend.
- 4:29Speaker 1: I'll get to all three in a second. But first,
- 4:32Speaker 1: I want to give some love to our friends over
- 4:34Speaker 1: at PrizePix. They just launched PrizePix packs. They have real
- 4:38Speaker 1: football and basketball and even Pokemon cards. If your kids
- 4:40Speaker 1: are into that or you're into that, you can rip
- 4:42Speaker 1: them right there in the app. You can see me
- 4:44Speaker 1: doing it on one here in just a moment. The
- 4:46Speaker 1: odds are listed on every pack. They started just a
- 4:49Speaker 1: dollar and you can ship your cards home or sell
- 4:52Speaker 1: them back instantly at a fair market price. They've got
- 4:55Speaker 1: grails in there, guys, like the $ 8 million Cooper flag
- 4:57Speaker 1: one of one. They're available in all 50 states. New users,
- 5:02Speaker 1: use our code HMA, rip your first $ 5 pack, and
- 5:05Speaker 1: get $ 25 in bonus packs. The link is below. Again,
- 5:09Speaker 1: the code is HMA. All right, three things. Number one,
- 5:14Speaker 1: I want to see drives finished. This is the one
- 5:18Speaker 1: to me. Notre Dame left points all over Provo. Twice,
- 5:21Speaker 1: the Irish started drives in BYU territory and came away
- 5:24Speaker 1: with just field goals. They turned it over once in
- 5:27Speaker 1: the red zone.
- 5:28Speaker 2: The spike. C.J.
- 5:29Speaker 1: Carr went 27-49 for 261 yards. It's not a terrible
- 5:34Speaker 1: stat line, but my goodness, that's a lot of attempts
- 5:37Speaker 1: for just 261 yards. Jaden Greathouse had eight catches for
- 5:42Speaker 1: 125 yards.
- 5:43Speaker 2: Nolan James Jr.
- 5:44Speaker 1: Ran hard 77 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries.
- 5:48Speaker 2: The ball moved. It just didn't move across the goal
- 5:51Speaker 2: line quite enough.
- 5:52Speaker 1: Now, Navy is the perfect test or lack thereof for this.
- 5:58Speaker 1: And here's why against Navy's offense, you don't get a
- 6:01Speaker 1: lot of possessions. They are going to grind the clock.
- 6:04Speaker 1: They are going to shorten the game. Every drive that
- 6:07Speaker 1: ends in three points instead of seven feels like a
- 6:10Speaker 1: massive gift that you're giving to them. So the stat
- 6:13Speaker 1: to watch Saturday isn't total yards. I think it's red
- 6:16Speaker 1: zone touchdowns. If Notre Dame gets inside the 25 times,
- 6:21Speaker 1: I need to see four or five touchdowns.
- 6:24Speaker 2: And preferably not four.
- 6:26Speaker 1: Not two, not three. Probably needs to be four or five.
- 6:30Speaker 1: Because in seven days against Miami, there's not going to
- 6:32Speaker 1: be a margin for field goals with their offense. Get
- 6:36Speaker 1: to more of that in a moment. Number two, I
- 6:37Speaker 1: want to see a quick start. This has been a
- 6:41Speaker 1: knock on Marcus Freeman for a while. And it showed
- 6:43Speaker 1: up in Provo. Notre Dame came out a little slow.
- 6:47Speaker 1: They did take a 10-7 lead, but down 21-10 at
- 6:50Speaker 1: halftime against a team that, by the box score, they
- 6:54Speaker 1: were better than. The first half against BYU was the problem.
- 6:58Speaker 1: The second half was the response. Notre Dame can't keep
- 7:01Speaker 1: living in the response. We saw it against Wisconsin.
- 7:04Speaker 2: You responded. BYU, you responded.
- 7:06Speaker 1: Didn't get the result, but it worked. Here's what a
- 7:09Speaker 1: fast start looks like against Navy. Go score on the
- 7:12Speaker 1: opening drive. Get a stop and score again. Put the
- 7:16Speaker 1: midshipmen in a position where they have to throw because
- 7:18Speaker 1: that's not what they want to do. And their past
- 7:21Speaker 1: defense this year hasn't been great. Go attack it. Do that,
- 7:25Speaker 1: and the game is likely over by halftime. The starters sit.
- 7:31Speaker 1: Nobody gets hurt. You go into that Miami game fully healthy.
- 7:34Speaker 1: Don't do that, and you're in a second half to
- 7:36Speaker 1: fourth quarter game against an offense that's going to just
- 7:40Speaker 1: option you to death and grind it out and be
- 7:43Speaker 1: playing for one of the biggest games and wins of
- 7:45Speaker 1: their potential season. Which version of Notre Dame shows up?
- 7:50Speaker 1: That will tell you a lot about where this team
- 7:53Speaker 1: was during the bye week. Number three, you want to
- 7:56Speaker 1: see very assignment-sound football on defense. Navy does not appear
- 8:01Speaker 1: to be the Navy of the last two years. Blake
- 8:04Speaker 1: Corvath is gone. Eli Heinenreich is gone. Landon Robinson is gone.
- 8:09Speaker 1: After going 10-3 and 11-2 the last two seasons, Brian
- 8:13Speaker 1: Newberry's team is 2-5 and they're fighting like heck just
- 8:16Speaker 1: to get bowl eligible. But don't confuse a bad record
- 8:20Speaker 1: with an easy afternoon. All five of Navy's losses came
- 8:24Speaker 1: by 10 points or fewer. four to UAB, four to UTSA,
- 8:29Speaker 1: five to Air Force. They hung 39 on North Texas.
- 8:32Speaker 1: It's an offense that can at times move it. The
- 8:36Speaker 1: engine is quarterback Jackson Gutierrez. He's run for 869 yards
- 8:40Speaker 1: and 12 touchdowns. He's only thrown 64 passes all year,
- 8:43Speaker 1: but when he does throw it, it hurts. He gets 10.8
- 8:46Speaker 1: yards per attempt. He's got seven touchdowns, just one pick.
- 8:51Speaker 1: Tight end Jordan Collins is averaging over 35 yards a catch.
- 8:55Speaker 1: It'll be explosives if they throw. That is their formula.
- 9:00Speaker 1: Lull you to sleep with the run, then hit you
- 9:02Speaker 1: over the top when your safeties cheat down. Which is
- 9:06Speaker 1: exactly where Notre Dame got burned in the first half
- 9:08Speaker 1: at BYU. Eyes in the wrong place. Bad leverage. Not
- 9:12Speaker 1: ready for the misdirection. Against Navy, every defender has one job,
- 9:18Speaker 1: the dive, the quarterback, the pitch. Get greedy, and it's
- 9:21Speaker 1: a 50-yard game. The second-half version of Ash's defense, the
- 9:26Speaker 1: disciplined one, is the version that needs to show up
- 9:29Speaker 1: for four quarters on Saturday. And frankly, that's the version
- 9:32Speaker 1: that Notre Dame needs against Miami, too. And I think
- 9:35Speaker 1: that brings us to the elephant in Gillette Stadium.
- 9:40Speaker 2: It is the Miami Hurricanes. They're 7-0 defensively.
- 9:43Speaker 1: They're number one in the AP poll, their first time
- 9:45Speaker 1: on top since 2002. They just hung 52 points on
- 9:49Speaker 1: Pittsburgh in what I would consider a B-minus type performance.
- 9:54Speaker 1: Malachi Toney went absolutely off catching a program record for
- 9:59Speaker 1: passes in a game. Darian Mensah has been everything they'd
- 10:02Speaker 1: hoped he'd be when he came over from Duke. And
- 10:05Speaker 1: on November 7th at 7.30 p.m., they go to South Bend.
- 10:10Speaker 1: It'll be Miami's first trip to Notre Dame Stadium since
- 10:12Speaker 1: November of 1976.
- 10:16Speaker 2: You know the history.
- 10:17Speaker 1: Miami beat Notre Dame 27-24 in last year's opener. And
- 10:21Speaker 1: when the playoff field came out, it was Miami that
- 10:24Speaker 1: got in and Notre Dame that sat at home. The
- 10:27Speaker 1: Hurricanes went on to play for the national championship. And
- 10:30Speaker 1: Notre Dame has been carrying that all year. Now the
- 10:34Speaker 1: Irish are number five. They have one loss.
- 10:36Speaker 2: And here's the uncomfortable truth.
- 10:38Speaker 1: Another loss to Miami at home may turn this into
- 10:42Speaker 1: a season where Notre Dame is sitting by the phone
- 10:45Speaker 1: again on selection day.
- 10:46Speaker 2: Just waiting.
- 10:48Speaker 1: So, of course, there's a temptation to look ahead. Every
- 10:51Speaker 1: player on that roster knows what's coming next week. Every
- 10:54Speaker 1: fan does.
- 10:54Speaker 2: Every analyst does.
- 10:56Speaker 1: Every coach does. Every pregame show will mention it before
- 10:59Speaker 1: kickoff on Saturday. That's why this Navy game matters more
- 11:03Speaker 1: than a 30-point spread might suggest. Not because Navy is
- 11:06Speaker 1: going to win. Because of what it tells you about
- 11:09Speaker 1: the team that's going to play against Miami next week.
- 11:13Speaker 2: Think about it.
- 11:14Speaker 1: If Notre Dame comes out flat on Saturday, if they
- 11:16Speaker 1: come out sloppy, slow, settling for field goals, giving up
- 11:20Speaker 1: chunk plays on play action, what does that say to us?
- 11:24Speaker 1: It may say that Provo wasn't a fluke. It may
- 11:27Speaker 1: say that the issues are real. It may say that
- 11:30Speaker 1: the bye week was just a week off. But if
- 11:33Speaker 1: Notre Dame comes out and plays clean, a touchdown every
- 11:36Speaker 1: time you get in the red zone, a fast start,
- 11:38Speaker 1: 11 guys all doing their job specifically against the option,
- 11:43Speaker 1: starters on the bench in the fourth quarter, I think
- 11:45Speaker 1: that says something too. That says that this team that
- 11:49Speaker 1: took that BYU loss took it personally.
- 11:52Speaker 2: It says they fixed what was broken. It says that they're.
- 11:55Speaker 1: Walking into the Miami game with momentum instead of questions.
- 11:59Speaker 1: There's a big difference between those two Notre Dames. And
- 12:02Speaker 1: you'll know which one you have probably by the end
- 12:05Speaker 1: of the first quarter, most likely by halftime. A few
- 12:08Speaker 1: other things worth watching, the pass rush. You lost Traore
- 12:13Speaker 1: after the first drive in Provo, and nobody else was
- 12:16Speaker 1: able to really step up. Navy doesn't throw much, but
- 12:19Speaker 1: when Gutierrez drops back, it's usually a shot play.
- 12:23Speaker 2: I think pressure there is going to matter.
- 12:25Speaker 1: And Notre Dame needs to see its young stars, Bryce Young,
- 12:29Speaker 1: Keon Keeley, and the rest of that group get home
- 12:32Speaker 1: against somebody before Mensah comes to town.
- 12:36Speaker 2: I'm watching CJ Carr.
- 12:38Speaker 1: After a very inefficient game, one of the most inefficient
- 12:42Speaker 1: of his career as a starter, how does he respond?
- 12:45Speaker 1: Does he come out tight? Or does he come out
- 12:47Speaker 1: with something to prove? Navy secondary has struggled. This is
- 12:51Speaker 1: a get-right game. I want to see the running back rotation.
- 12:55Speaker 1: Jonez Walton was the breakout against Stanford. Nolan James Jr.
- 12:58Speaker 1: was the best player on offense at BYU. Freeman has
- 13:01Speaker 1: two backs playing well. Against Navy, there will be carries
- 13:04Speaker 1: for both, and Miami will be watching who gets the most.
- 13:09Speaker 1: And the kicker, Porath has been money. Here's hoping he
- 13:14Speaker 1: only has to kick extra points on Saturday. One more thing,
- 13:17Speaker 1: the game is at Gillette Stadium, the home of the Patriots.
- 13:20Speaker 2: It's the 99th meeting between these two programs.
- 13:23Speaker 1: It's the first time this rivalry has ever been played
- 13:25Speaker 1: in New England, and it's Notre Dame's first ever trip
- 13:28Speaker 1: to Foxborough. It'll kick off at noon Eastern on ABC
- 13:31Speaker 1: on Halloween, and we'll see.
- 13:32Speaker 2: If it's spooky or not.
- 13:34Speaker 1: And for all the talk about the Miami game, this
- 13:36Speaker 1: is a game that deserves a little bit of respect
- 13:38Speaker 1: on its own.
- 13:40Speaker 2: Notre Dame and Navy have been playing each.
- 13:42Speaker 1: Other for nearly a century. It's not a rivalry that's
- 13:45Speaker 1: built on hate. It's a rivalry that's built on history.
- 13:49Speaker 1: Notre Dame should be honoring that by playing its very
- 13:51Speaker 1: best football. So here's where we land. Notre Dame wins
- 13:55Speaker 1: this game. That's not part of the question. The question
- 13:58Speaker 1: for me is how? Do the Irish punch it in?
- 14:02Speaker 1: Do they start fast? Do they play disciplined defense for
- 14:05Speaker 1: 60 minutes instead of 30? Because two weeks ago, Notre
- 14:09Speaker 1: Dame had a top 10 team on the ropes and
- 14:11Speaker 1: couldn't find a way to finish. In seven days, the
- 14:13Speaker 1: number one team in the country walks into South Bend.
- 14:16Speaker 1: And Saturday is Notre Dame's last chance to prove it's
- 14:19Speaker 1: learned how. I talked about that history between Notre Dame
- 14:23Speaker 1: and Navy. If you want to learn more about that,
- 14:25Speaker 1: you can click the video on the screen right now.
- 14:27Speaker 1: Talked about it in the offseason. One of my favorite
- 14:29Speaker 1: videos I've ever done. Go check it out right now.
