- 1:44Hire. This one is entitled Joe Denine. Ladies and Gentlemen. The American
- 1:51Broadcasting Company brings to its entire network on the radio's most unusual programs. At
- 1:57Novak Higher. Sure, I'm at Novak or Hire. That's what the sign
- 2:36out in front of my office says, that Novak or Higher. You're trying
- 2:40to make a living down on the waterfront in San Francisco. You gotta run
- 2:43things like a smorgasboard. You take a little of everything you can get your
- 2:47hands on. Even then it's a bumpy ride because down here everybody tries the
- 2:53paddy part. Oh, I read boats and do anything else good men paid
- 2:58bad men to do. You don't get many gold stars any way that you
- 3:02pay the bar bill, and that's about as safe as a closet full of
- 3:05tigers. The only way you can make friends down in the waterfront is to
- 3:08die. I found that out Tuesday night. I went to the wrestling matches
- 3:15and watched gorgeous George. Saw some guy around like a poker chip in Tijuanna.
- 3:19I was in a little of the crowd on my way out of the
- 3:21place when this guy stepped up behind me and started talking, You got company
- 3:24in over, huh said, you got company on both sides. Did your
- 3:29friend get here his face with a fire sale too? Can't. I'll be
- 3:31pretty keep walking over beck. The gun in my bag's supposed to help.
- 3:36That's up to you. It's for the head and mouth beside door. You
- 3:39got the right growl, but the wrong guy. Mister. You keep working
- 3:43your mouth but nothing comes down. All right, this words, what are
- 3:46your plans? Shall we take the kids? The car? Right down here?
- 3:51I look a big shot in a drug store. I get all the
- 3:53mystery I want for two bits. Do you want things explained? Yeah,
- 3:55besides shovel head here, I don't understand a thing. We just want Joe
- 3:59to me or hurt of him either. We just want Jodnane. All right,
- 4:01you can have him. You're welcome, see his wife, see anybody
- 4:03alike. I don't even know the guy. You're full of talk. As
- 4:06soon as you want to make at the right time, you can go home.
- 4:10We are into the back seat. You'll drive Eddie. You boys run
- 4:14on. I'll grab a cab. I'm not gonna take a boat. That's
- 4:18good. Just be a good mouse. You've got a lot of time to
- 4:23waste it this way, mister, you're too gabby Novak and we're too tough
- 4:26Junior. And this noise is beginning to give me a headache. Let's go,
- 4:31Eddie. Novak's gonna soak a while. He could have taken three bases
- 4:46on that waller. I spread out on the back seat like a bowl of
- 4:49cake batter and tried to think of a guy named jo Denine. There was
- 4:54nobody on my list for that moon. But the way these two dentils acted,
- 4:58he was supposed to be a blood relative. I could hear him talking
- 5:01dimly, and I tried to follow the conversation, but it was like trying
- 5:03to put a smoke ring in your pocket. I don't know how long the
- 5:08tour lasted. It must have been about thirty or forty minutes when the car
- 5:11bowled up and the big gun up started to yank me. Wake up,
- 5:15we got swing right, Come on, it's time for your ten o'clock feeding.
- 5:18Yeah. Wait, I borrow some legs. Huh? Come on,
- 5:20you never looked better. All right down the dock here we're playing a new
- 5:29game or hunting a guy named Danien. That's right, good, now I
- 5:31know the rules. That's your boat, Novak. It's got my name on
- 5:39it. That's your boat, Novak. Well once it looks like the Normandy
- 5:41of course, it's my boat. Who threw the blood all over it?
- 5:43One of your friends maybe didn't even I look you at the back up and
- 5:45start a recamp. I never heard of Daneen, and from the size of
- 5:46his friends, I'm just about as happy he didn't run the boat off you.
- 5:49If he used that boat, he stole it, mister. I closed
- 5:51up to night at seven to make it sound good. It is good,
- 5:55and then off the waterfront four hours. In the meantime somebody takes my boat
- 5:58and get the chuck full of holes and sends you around a week. Who
- 6:00is Deman a friend? I don't blame either of your hanging on to one.
- 6:02It was supposed to meet him mature landing at ten. It was gonna
- 6:04rent one of your boats, and we were gonna meet him at ten.
- 6:06There's the boat. You want to pay the damages. We came early and
- 6:10found the boat piled up, blood all over and no Dineen. You got
- 6:13any ideas Maybe he cut himself shaving drag the bay. Mister. I don't
- 6:15know your guy, but somebody did. They met him out there in the
- 6:17bay and cut him down, and you sound happy. Now. Look,
- 6:19I don't care one way or another, except to use my boat. He
- 6:23wanted to die. He should have hired a Davenport. That's all I know.
- 6:25I never heard of Joe Denie. Yeah, you and your friend here,
- 6:28better go sap somebody else. Sure, Novak, we'll look around,
- 6:30but hanging under your cards because you've still got a hand in this game.
- 6:32Thanks mother, I'll remember that, Jod nice curve, no wreck, You're
- 6:44wrong, mister. My friends ride the table car. You made a pump
- 6:46pitch Novak. Oh you can't want to fight now? Why won't you for
- 6:50any Novak? Sorry? Follow, The water's gonna be cold. Hey,
- 6:58what's the trouble? Trouble going on? No? Whatever gave you that idea.
- 7:02I'm a night watchman over here. I fell a line on the dock
- 7:05there dead. I don't know if he's not, he's gonna catch cold.
- 7:09What about the other fella? Maybe he can't swim, but do you care
- 7:12he doesn't? Oh? They come here looking for something. Yeah, I
- 7:15guess they didn't find it. Huh. Somebody satisfied. They were trying to
- 7:19find the guy that came out of that boat down there. Oh you mean
- 7:21the funny looking guy. Huh? I guy got out of that boat a
- 7:24few hours ago, all banged up. I think he was in a fight.
- 7:27Yeah, sure, somebody shot him. I think he was in a
- 7:30fight. But he go down the dock toward the street. He asked about
- 7:32a fella and went down the dock. Oh, he asked about a fellow
- 7:35named Nova. Do you know him? Yeah, but I'll do my best
- 7:41to forget. It wasn't gonna be easy to forget. I knew there was
- 7:53a guy wandering around San Francisco waiting to jog my memory. And before long
- 7:57somebody was gonna find out. Those two dead guys were doing white house keeping
- 8:01down on the dock. Once homicide smell that red meat, they'd turn Inspector
- 8:05Helman loose. That's like pouring a bottle of cyanide in a wedding cake.
- 8:09Oh, he's a smart cop with a heart the size of a full grown
- 8:13pea. I got off the dock in a hurry, and I went home.
- 8:16When I left, the watchman was still standing there, waiting to check
- 8:18in the next murder and smiling like a vulture with the first option on a
- 8:22massacre. And I had to get home and look sweet in case Helman showed
- 8:26up. When I opened the door to my place. Helman was on the
- 8:30couch with a pencil in one hand and a movie magazine in the other.
- 8:33Hello, Mac, you busy? No, I'll just stand here and watch
- 8:37you a little more of that pencil and movie magazine routine and you'll break out
- 8:41in the cold sweat. Have you been staying out of the people's departments?
- 8:45I got an answer for that. You haven't got an answer for anything,
- 8:46Helman. You can't fill in the return address envelope that's on your mind?
- 8:50Can I make a cold no, not to play cat and mouse? You
- 8:52want to know about that blood bath down on the dock, Say so?
- 8:54Yeah, they're close strangers. I never saw either of them before. You're
- 8:58getting loose around them, Mountain know that? Huh? That's right. If
- 9:01some of your planemates stubbed their toes, it's news to me. You better
- 9:05tell me, though, It'll save time. Or what's the use if a
- 9:07fact walked up and set in your lap? You'd lose it? Eat yourself.
- 9:11Have a drink. Yeah, there's the bottle opener. Huh, the
- 9:16bottle opener. You've got teeth for it. I need a bottle opener,
- 9:18hell I, no, No, I try the kitchen, all right,
- 9:24drive a light, well, got this guy on the floor in the that
- 9:31don't tell him to move, because I don't think he can. When I
- 9:41looked down at the guy on the floor, I felt like a bir lapsed
- 9:45sack from the neck down. Who's a big guy lying on his back?
- 9:48And he got the idea. He took it hard. He didn't like the
- 9:50way the boat came in because he wasn't relaxed the way most people are when
- 9:54they're on the call for the harp. It was about as rigid as a
- 9:58coil of wet line on a steamer deck. His face was pock marked in
- 10:01the color of an old piece of abaloney. Helman was standing over him,
- 10:05and the shadow cut across the lower part of his face and almost blocked out
- 10:09the gun, A big thirty eight lying about four feet away. The rest
- 10:13of the kitchen with a mess was torn up worse than a Japanese lantern in
- 10:18a high wind. Helman was leaning against the cabinet and smiling like the banker
- 10:22in the crooked blackjack game. Does he belong to you? No? That
- 10:26No, he's not pretty enough. Roll him over. We'll find out who
- 10:28he is. I already been through his step. Wipe your hands. The
- 10:31green still shows. His name is Joe Denine the sure we're popular. Joe.
- 10:35Why the scavenger hut? Every gun up in town's been looking for him.
- 10:39I figured June for the prize. Two of them picked me up and
- 10:41lugged me down to the waterfront. Yeah, I told you about him.
- 10:43They ran into bad weather. Why they thank you because I look like a
- 10:46bird dog. Maybe I don't know why, Elman, They just took me
- 10:48in the meantime, sunshine here took my boat out and got shot up,
- 10:52And he came up here to borrow your anethe of check. That's all I
- 10:54know, Helman. He must have figured me for a park. I got
- 10:56the same trouble. No fact that gun on the floor helps too. That
- 10:58gun second lead at best. I never before. It's a murder gun.
- 11:01How did you get here? I don't know. Maybe the scullery made left
- 11:03it. Come on, no Vactor in the spot, you better start digging.
- 11:05If I do any dig in, the dirt's gonna go in your face.
- 11:07Helmet. He's got a nice face. Two, No Vacer, you
- 11:13better buy a big shield helmet. He's gonna lot to hide behind. Stop
- 11:16beef, and you're the host. What about the safety deposit box? You're
- 11:20ahead of me on that one. You gotta have your picture taken. He
- 11:22was talking about a safety deposit box when I got here. It was alive
- 11:26when you got here. That's right, show more joy. The neighbors heard
- 11:30the shooting and phoned in. But who did it? What did he say?
- 11:33He said, tough luck copper. That's only said something about a safety
- 11:35deposit box and tough luck copper. Oh, that's real fine. You let
- 11:39him die, clammed up, your smart helming. You let him off with
- 11:41a third rate tagline. You're a lucky novact. This way, it's gonna
- 11:43take me twelve hours to wrap you up. I'm gonna run that gun through
- 11:46and check a couple of things, and I'll be on your tail. I
- 11:48want to see you follow something up helmet with that big nose of yours.
- 11:50You couldn't find a motion in the bathtop block. Novac. You're a small
- 11:52time waterfront punk. You've been lucky so far, but you're still a punk.
- 11:56I don't like him. I'm gonna hang you by your heels. I'm
- 11:58gonna get the last thing I ever do. I'm gonna get you. If
- 12:01I thought you were on the level about that, I'd give myself up.
- 12:13When Helman left, things were about as dim as a glow worm at high
- 12:18noon. All the lead were tucked away in the morgue. Those two stiffs
- 12:20on the dock checked out with nothing but a grunt, and the guy up
- 12:24in my place left a thirty eight and some mild regrets. I had the
- 12:28funny feeling that was a lead up there in that apartment, but I couldn't
- 12:31get a hold of it. Something waiting to be understood, the way a
- 12:35thing gets balanced on the edge of your brain, half in, half out,
- 12:39like the melody but not the words of an old song. Well,
- 12:43I didn't know where to turn. I was hunting for the shoreline on a
- 12:46dark night, so I looked up the only honest guy I know, an
- 12:50ex doctor and a boozer, but the name of Jack o'madigan. Oh he's
- 12:52all right, but he's got the idea that all liquid that isn't a hundred
- 12:56proof lax character. I finally foun him in a little bar down the Union
- 13:00Square. He was talking to a blonde girl and a sailor when I walked
- 13:03in. Ah, Patsy, you'll find me in the linked October of my
- 13:09life trying to recapture a few April moment. Yes, Jacko, I gotta
- 13:13talk to you. That's what I like about good whiskey. It makes you
- 13:16too sentimental to be mand at yourself for growing old. Look, I'm in
- 13:20a jam way off that stuff long after. Lesson, Patsy, you underrate
- 13:22the grape. It's a terrible mistake. It's thrown off the whole perspective of
- 13:28history, all right, Jacko. Like that story about young Washington and the
- 13:31cherry tree. They blame him for that, but actually it was his first
- 13:35hint of future greatness. Yeah. Yeah, They talk about vandalism, whereas
- 13:39the truth of the matter is he was just preparing a few Manhattans for the
- 13:45family. The whole perspective of history has been altered. Patsy, stop it,
- 13:48will you. I'm in trouble. Will you help me out? Yes,
- 13:50if you'll allow me to get a word in edgewise. What kind of
- 13:56trouble is a dead guy up in my place? I don't know why you're
- 14:00you're in trouble. Think of his bleak out look on things. Helman's nosing
- 14:03around and he thinks I did it? Did you? No? We got
- 14:05shocking relays. But he picked my place to quit. And there are two
- 14:07other dead guys down on the dock. What were their practices? They strong
- 14:11army about ten o'clock and took me down at the waterfront. We were supposed
- 14:15to find a guy named Jodanine, but they look too light to somebody.
- 14:18How about Janine? He's that guy up at my place. When Helman got
- 14:20there, was muttering about a safety deposit box and staring at a big thirty
- 14:24eighth Oh, come on, you gotta help me, Jacko. Yes,
- 14:28sir, where would you like me to spread the ashes? I want you
- 14:31to get down and find out everything you can about Jodanine. He's your house,
- 14:35jas Why don't you go hit the chronicle and the examiner Morgues and trying
- 14:39to find out if he has a safety deposit box in any of the banks.
- 14:41Huh? Where are you going before prison? I mean I'm going down
- 14:45and lion Helm and Shadow until something turns up. I need every minute,
- 14:46Jacko, so hurry well, I need a quick one for the road first.
- 14:50You'll get going right now, Jacko. Pets, you have a defiant
- 14:54attitude for a man on the doorstep to the next world, trying to be
- 14:58sweeter until you discuss. But your normal disposition will do. You can start
- 15:03by paying my barber, All right, will you hurry? How much to
- 15:07you about eleven dollars? What have you been doing all now? You're crazy?
- 15:11I may on eleven dollars, Patsy, but so far I've had a
- 15:15better night than you have. Good night, lover. I had to get
- 15:28started on some answers, because once Helman checked on those two guys at the
- 15:31dock, he'd go to work on me and keep hacking away and finally cut
- 15:33me down like a piece of flint and a cigarette lighter. Well after I
- 15:37left Jocko, I started down at headquarters. Was a little after midnight,
- 15:41and the streets were wept and silence. Now and then you can hear a
- 15:46woman's laughter coming out of the dark as you passed along. That's the only
- 15:50sound the night keeps whole. Well. I was cutting down Leavenworth Street when
- 15:54it came to me. I knew what my leave was up in that apartment.
- 15:58It didn't hit me suddenly. It kept shoving in like a piece of
- 16:00old seaweed on the water, moving in and out and finally brushing up against
- 16:03you. If that guy was alive when Hellman got there, that meant that
- 16:07maybe he could have phoned somebody, and if he did, then they'd have
- 16:10a record. I look down at the desk. Well. I got back
- 16:11to my place and asked the operator, Well, it feels good when you
- 16:15got the right sweepstakes ticket. She said A call had been put in for
- 16:18my place at ten fifteen to the Ambrose Hotel, room two o four.
- 16:22But the last things were beginning to make sense. It must have made sense
- 16:26for about five seconds, because Hellman called. The girl, handed me the
- 16:29phone and he started in. I got notice for your Novak. We checked
- 16:32the prince on that murder gun. They don't add take your trouble to the
- 16:34chapel helm and I got my quarta. Yeah, he got fancy friends too,
- 16:37and Novac. The prince belonged to Jake Fidello. Yeah, how do
- 16:41you spell that? If I did you kill you? No? Back to
- 16:45Jake Fidello on nothing. Who is he? She'd funk like U Novak.
- 16:48He's working on a twenty year stretch in alkatriz h Yeah, Alchatriz, So
- 16:51there's no time between the murder gun and the murder. Maybe Fidello bought himself
- 16:55a two day furlow. We already checked god Tom and it heel at eleven
- 16:57o'clock tonight reading the guards paid a rent to Helman. My boat was out
- 17:02in that data night and it came back full of bullets and blood. Now
- 17:03you're trying to tell me there's no connection. You better find out if a
- 17:07guy can skip Alcatraz for a few hours, I'll wait, no, bec
- 17:10if you can tell me how it's done. The fulllock, Well, nothing
- 17:22mats Now it was like the chorus, girl's legs and a cheap night club.
- 17:26If Jake Fidela was smart enough to beat Alcatraz for a couple of hours,
- 17:30then he wasn't dumb enough to leave that murder a gun behind. And
- 17:33what was the connection between the nan and Jake Fidela and who lived at the
- 17:37Ambrose Hotel? Well, I went up there to find out. It was
- 17:41a small place up near the top of Telegraph Hill, And when I rode
- 17:44by, I could see Alcatraz sitting out on the bay on Lonely Island full
- 17:47of birthdays. The Ambrose turned out to be a high toned little joint,
- 17:51the sort of place with a welcome matt splended in old English. I went
- 17:55up to two O four and card in the door, said Frederica Simms.
- 18:00Knock, and from the door open it was like shaking hands in the flamesraw.
- 18:04She was a tall number, and she screamed finn edition all over.
- 18:10She stood in the doorway for a minute and swayed in a manx contented away,
- 18:14like a snake on the right diet. Then she said hello, you
- 18:18wanted to handle your arm and say twist good evening. Yeah, my name's
- 18:23Novak. I'll remember. Why don't you come in? It'll save an argument.
- 18:30I help you. Don't mind crowds, she means me, mister Novak,
- 18:34and I Mike cover and I'm pretty thin. Well, that brings us
- 18:37up to date. Drink woul jokes so much more. You need to drink
- 18:41this. To Novak, you look a little dusty. Don't mind her to
- 18:44know that she addresses old people and pitt All right now, I suppose you
- 18:47two landowners tell me who killed Joe Deannin. You don't, Mike, I
- 18:49don't think he wants to drink. We'll all celebrate and you get around to
- 18:52Danie. I don't think we know a mander the name of Deneen, particularly
- 18:56if he's dead. Yes, I'm sure we wouldn't like him. Come on,
- 18:59let's drop the smart talk. Come on back in the saloon. A
- 19:00guy for the name of Jodanine died all over my kitchen the night. Don't
- 19:03get tough. No there. If you miss your dinner, all right,
- 19:07but don't come up here screaming about your dead friend. Now. Look,
- 19:10I'm about ten feet behind a phone call. Then he ain't put in a
- 19:11call for this number just before he died. Then it was whimsy, novak
- 19:15or anything else you'd like to call it. We don't know the man.
- 19:18You can mull it over on your way downstairs. Yeah, and you can
- 19:22use the time to think over that safety department box? What safety department wile
- 19:25you're jumping your queue, lady, make it more casual. Huh do you
- 19:27know what you're talking about? Novay? Do you think so? I'll tell
- 19:30you what I'll do, Norah, I'll buy that key from you. You
- 19:34got a deal, unless you want to pay it off with the money you
- 19:37mean, Joe DENI, that's right, I'm running front on the murder rap.
- 19:41You want that key. If you want it bad enough, come on
- 19:42down a headquarters and we'll make a trade. No, thanks, Novak.
- 19:47You didn't look right, but I thought you might be hiding your brain somewhere.
- 19:51This way, you lose money, you lose even more, Trevor.
- 19:53I was going to ease you into that murder rap. But the offer's out.
- 19:56You'll have to struggle in and you'll be too tired to get out.
- 19:59Can I allow neither you boys to pick axe? Well, I'm going to
- 20:03run along. Can I drop you anyplace? Mother, I'll stay. You
- 20:07know, I didn't think I could drop you any place. Mob. You
- 20:11ought to sell that gleam in your eyes. Some airport could use it.
- 20:17Good night, buddy, be careful. Good night, Mike. I can
- 20:22take care of myself if you prop That's all I was worried about the friendly
- 20:29the wrong books. I'll bet you never wanted to do a time that way.
- 20:33Why don't you sit down on the couch here and have a dream passy
- 20:37now, is the argument of it. At least we need a dream.
- 20:41Yeah, sure, that'll make the talk so easy about that key? Do
- 20:45you think I want the key like nothing else in the world. That's a
- 20:48little rash passy, But I do want to I want to bary that lead.
- 20:53That was the famous last words. Lady. You heard the odd with
- 20:56much prices haven't changed. That's too expensive to pick a dan. What are
- 21:03you looking at? You? The way you slide around on that couch.
- 21:11Yeah, you belong to the Everglades. If I with you, a Patsy,
- 21:15I think you're the kind of a guy who will be right around and
- 21:18extend you. Sound pretty sure that's a good way to lose the shirt.
- 21:22I am sure, Patsy, I know that about it. He belongs one.
- 21:27Yeah, we belong together because we're the same kind. Send me the
- 21:32good and the bad. It gets aw that has to do. Make it
- 21:37sound corny, baby, try to hide garden. But I can see you
- 21:40picking through your fingers. I can see you all secos from me. You,
- 21:44Patsy, watch out, you're backing into a corner. Angel. I
- 21:48got you with me. Make some more noise, man, I like it.
- 21:52It's true. I've got you with me. You haven't got Patsy.
- 21:56I can still struggle. I'll bet you don't struggle good. I'll bet you
- 22:00don't struggle good at all. Patsy, I still get the key, Baby,
- 22:06it stays at my place. I pay Yeah, he never naming my
- 22:11kink at the end of the table. Sure, that's it. It doesn't
- 22:30pay much to fall in love. I spent enough time on her rug to
- 22:33work my way into the design, and when I finally came to it was
- 22:37morning. There was nobody around the place, so I started for home.
- 22:41On the way, I tried to fill in the blind spots, but it
- 22:44was like trying to match pearls in the dark. Somebody had killed the name
- 22:48for the key to that safety deposit box, but where was the key?
- 22:52If the girl or Mike Trevor did it, then why were they still on
- 22:55the trail? Well? When I got to my apartment, the place was
- 22:59torn apart. Looks something like a mop flatherdecker. New Year's Eve party.
- 23:03Jacko was sitting in the middle of a room listening to the water fayz good
- 23:07morning, you get the bump on the head romance. How'd you find out?
- 23:11Jacko? Jeanen has lots of friends and enemies. Yeah, one of
- 23:15them's Jake Fidelo. He's number one on the list. Deneen had a brawl
- 23:18with Fidelo two years ago. Jake promised to square the beef. Isn't a
- 23:22bad spot for it? Now? Maybe Demen has no safety deposit box.
- 23:27Oh that was my out. Perhaps you can take up folk dancing in prison.
- 23:33I'll send you diagrams of new steps from time to time. Fidelo has
- 23:38a safety deposit box, though. Yeah, he's got a lot of money
- 23:44floating around somewhere well well, and a lot of woman doing the same thing
- 23:48or doing a better shuffle. Now is the girl's name, Freddy Simms?
- 23:52That's shy. Fidelo loves him like the last fifteen minutes of life. That's
- 23:57why you won't like it to get to the point. She's supposed to be
- 24:00waiting for him, but she's got married in Mexico to a guy named Mike
- 24:04Trevor, Fidello's best friend. Does it make sense, No, it doesn't.
- 24:10Suppose Jake's found out about his sweetheart and best friend, why would he
- 24:12kill Deneen? I don't know, except you'll find out, Patsy that sometimes
- 24:17the difference between your best friend and your worst end in knee is only a
- 24:21metric opportunity. Yeah, no, that tarking. How's a dent in your
- 24:26forehead? Oh? You get around. Helman. Yeah, we picked her
- 24:30up at your apopment. Can you tell you about that tea? Oh?
- 24:30That'll She made a confession too. He's generous not to Mike Trevor. She
- 24:34spends the whole thing on him. Go and signed the statement. We're gonna
- 24:37have to pick him up now, ifee in ten minutes. Why Katie wants
- 24:40to shoot somebody, I'm offering you things were moving fast now. I sent
- 24:52Jack o'donna start repair work on the boat, and Helman picked me up.
- 24:56Five minutes later. We drove out Gary and turned on Van Ass. Helman
- 25:00was real subtle. He stopped right in front of the rooming house where Mike
- 25:03Trevor was living. The girl had napped that out for him. Trevor was
- 25:07in the first floor room. It was a quiet neighborhood, but as we
- 25:10opened the front door and started in, I got the idea it was gonna
- 25:12be a tough place to get him his sleep for the next few minutes.
- 25:17Down on the right side him, stay ahead of me. No, Beck,
- 25:19you're one copper who will die in bed. Helman, I'm the haul
- 25:22of be quiet. Yeah, as you did on this lap, you go
- 25:27first, stand back when I throw it open, God empty, Helman.
- 25:34Jo Setti was here. What's that? Your boy's up at the top of
- 25:40the stairs. You see him. He's not wearing me on pants. Go
- 25:45up and get him. Come on down, Trevor, your girl talk,
- 25:48Come on down and sign a confession. All right back, move over,
- 25:56Helman. He's gonna argue. He's heading for the roof. Let's go pull
- 26:03it, helmet that girl up. There's a lot. We'll run right through
- 26:04the barrel. You get one more chance, Trevor, tver and down that
- 26:10roof. Doors locked. Now you got your whole Trevor. Yeah, no,
- 26:29n better get to that safety depomit box. Get there in a hurry
- 26:36me part the girl, oh city. Other than that a helmet. Let's
- 26:42get to that safety deposit box. Hever have the key. What do you
- 26:45tear notes? Actually, Fidela's girl. No, there's a queer twist here
- 26:49somewhere. How do you know what's in that box? Soda? In love
- 26:52with the girl. He's grateful. What do you care? That's what makes
- 26:55it good. That's the way it is with love and gratitude. The love
- 26:57goes on, Helman, but the gratitude as well. The way things stood
- 27:08there was only one place that he could be. I got to a phone
- 27:12and called Jacko. I told him to check out on the boat for a
- 27:15key somewhere on the floorboards. Jacko seemed happy when he said that some girl
- 27:19had come by fifteen minutes ago and rosed around the boat for a while.
- 27:23Well, Helman and I rushed down to the bank. When we got downstairs,
- 27:26Freddie was just starting into the vault. You're on your way to that
- 27:32deposit box. You better think it over. Can he stop me coping?
- 27:33No, though, they can hold the door and until they check with Padello.
- 27:37Go ahead. I don't think he's gonna like it. I'll be back.
- 27:41Let's go No back, we can hold the door upstairs while to hang
- 27:42around. I just want to see eighteen cariggree those he opens that box.
- 27:51That's strategy. Help me. I got the key. Yeah, you got
- 28:00everything. Yeah. He diap you over the lawn by twenty minute. The
- 28:11next I'll try again. Because you don't do it a nice name, You're
- 28:17not anything hand. It's thought about it. I couldn't, Oh, God,
- 28:23one thing then I think I wouldn't like this. I don't do well.
- 28:30Yeah. Padella was a thorough guy the way he told out, but
- 28:59the an Fdello found out about the girl and might the he go. He
- 29:04pulled the slips. He hired his enemy and Joe the Nan to do the
- 29:08job. Nian stand at the bomb and apace to the page's box and just
- 29:14to fill it with a spare pick. Adella gave them the knee. Was
- 29:18supposed to kill the girl and leave the chief or Mike to blow his head
- 29:22off. He's just gonna make the pin. Adello got him tet. He
- 29:26told him to look up the mean. If anything happened to the girl that
- 29:30way, he figured to knop up all three of them that night. A
- 29:33jump the gun. He started killing the Nan and sat enough out on the
- 29:37bank. He followed him to my place and killed him. If the gun
- 29:42the meaning was killing an, he was lost, and he called the girl
- 29:47and held it with a lot of men and let's sake to the Pope of
- 29:48Fop. After the baby, find a couple clock Mike's get and turn him
- 29:53in. Trevor killed those two guys in the pier. He lost the leaning
- 29:57the fog, and then he go about a couple of dump the blows.
- 30:02That's scary, good question, what could that girl have said to Jacko to
- 30:07nickim let her walk in and breeze out with that key. I meant to
- 30:12let to Jacko, but he just smiled. It brought your Pat Novak for
- 30:29Hire, starring Jack Webb. Pat Novak is directed and produced by William de
- 30:34Lussou. Chaco Madigan is played by Vudu Owen. Inspector Helmet is played by
- 30:40Raymond Byrd. Music was composed John in Our cast where Don Baby, Harry
- 30:45Wine, Parley Bear and bur bellis. This program is being loosed to our
- 30:49worldwide facilities of the Armed Forces Radio Service. This is a George German inviting
- 30:55you to be with us again next week one over most of these same ABC
- 30:59stationing, Well, when you'll have Loback or hire, Well you'll from Hollywood
- 31:10its ABC, the American Broadcasting Company. Welcome back. Well. This was
- 31:18one of the weaker outings, I thought, mainly with the ending. The
- 31:22reason that Hellman and had Novak at the scene of the taking the suspect into
- 31:30Costady doesn't make as much sense as usual, and Hellman definitely not making a
- 31:37positive impression for police inspectors, to say the least. Now we turn to
- 31:41some listener comments and feedback regarding the episode Agnes Bolton and regarding Novak's line she
- 31:55was at least fifty because you can't get that ugly without years of practice.
- 31:59An he said, as I love that line. He's the best, and
- 32:04Ross also highlighted the line even at the carnival she was no prize. I
- 32:08did also share that link to the American Radio Theater adaptation of Lola Madden,
- 32:15and Debbie was not a fan of that, saying well, Jack Webb and
- 32:22Raymond Bird definitely spoiled me. I thought this version was horrible. This Pat
- 32:25Novak was too clean sounding, not hard boiled, yuck. Disliked Well,
- 32:34I can definitely understand the viewpoint, and I would agree that you didn't get
- 32:38somebody who could pull off hard bitten though I guess just American Radio Theater didn't
- 32:45have that available. But I'm still glad they did the adaptation, so at
- 32:49least we have something out there. Well, let's see. The only other
- 32:54thing I do have to announce is next week is the last episode of Patnovak
- 33:00for Hire, and it's going to be different than the last time. We
- 33:05have a different version which is going to sound better and have a little bit
- 33:08more in it, so I'll let you know all about that next Tuesday when
- 33:13we bring you the last episode of Pat Novak. Tomorrow it's Philip Marlow,
- 33:17and be sure to be listening then. In the meantime, send your comments
