- 0:00In our massive country, there are card collectors throughout
- 0:03the land participating in the hobby.
- 0:06There's Mike of Junk Wax Hero and Greg of Midlife Cards, and
- 0:11while distance may separate them, here is where they come
- 0:14together to talk cards. Oh buddy, we're talking cards.
- 0:20We got holidays, we've got end of year New Year resolutions.
- 0:27How are you? I'm sore already, Greg.
- 0:30I, I went out and I snow blown 18 inches of snow.
- 0:35That's, that's a big storm for us these days. 18 inches.
- 0:39And then I had to rake the roof. I know you've probably never
- 0:41even heard of this concept of raking the roof, but you know
- 0:45your roof, you get the 18 inches of snow on it and you have the
- 0:47overhang. And if you don't get the snow
- 0:50off of that overhang, then it freezes where the red that the
- 0:55overhang freezes and turns to ice or the rest of the roof is
- 0:58warm from the inside. And that will melt.
- 1:02And if the ice on the overhang freezes, it will prevent the
- 1:05melting from going off the roof and it will end up going under
- 1:09your shingles and you get a leak in your your roof.
- 1:12So very diligent about because it happened once in our very
- 1:16first winter 18 years ago and we got a leak between our walls and
- 1:23that's no fun at all. So I rake the roof and there's
- 1:2718 inches of snow and it's, it's upper upper body work and oh,
- 1:32and it's also a lot of cardio. I'm already sore.
- 1:37Gosh, that sounds terrible. It is.
- 1:40So what does, what does it get like, like temperature wise at
- 1:43night right now? What it what is it out there?
- 1:46Oh, 10° is a pretty standard. 10 to 20 is pretty typical.
- 1:50You'll get some nights into the negatives.
- 1:52Wow, that's such a different world.
- 1:56Come for a visit, Greg. I don't know if I'd be able to
- 1:59make it. I I mean out up out here, it
- 2:04might hit the 20s at night a couple of times.
- 2:09It rarely gets below. Freezing 20s is a decent night
- 2:14here. That's like a a good night in
- 2:17December, January, February. That's wild.
- 2:22Yeah, different. Literally as the logo shows.
- 2:26I mean, if I were to change our logo here real quick, you up
- 2:30there at the top right hand corner, me left.
- 2:33I'm basically live in the desert and you live in the polar
- 2:39Arctic, as far as I can tell. We don't get as much snow as we
- 2:43used to. So it's it's this was very
- 2:48unusual. It used to be much more common
- 2:49to get an 18 inch storm. You get you used to get a
- 2:52handful of those every winter. We have had one in the last
- 2:57handful of years probably. Well, well hey, way to get your
- 3:03work out on today. Proud of you staying fit.
- 3:09OK, so I want to tell an experience that I had and then I
- 3:13want to pick your brain about it.
- 3:15Does that sound good? Because you don't know the topic
- 3:17that I want to talk about today, which I think makes it more fun
- 3:21and more authentic. It definitely feels more fun to
- 3:23me too. So so about a month ago I bought
- 3:28a Mayo cut plug football card. It's really like the first set
- 3:36of football cards, but they're, you know, there's like 35 cards
- 3:40in the set. They're all college players,
- 3:43very rare. Most of them have a total pop
- 3:46under 30 and. The most famous card is the No
- 3:50name on front, correct? Yeah.
- 3:52Is it John Dunlop? Yeah.
- 3:54And Orlando has one of them. There's like 8 of them and
- 3:57Orlando has one. His is is pretty nice looking.
- 4:00It's Miss Cut. There's one that's been on and
- 4:04off eBay for a few months in the four $500,000 range.
- 4:12But you know it, it's like they only made them of the key
- 4:16schools, you know, Yale, Harvard, Princeton.
- 4:19And then in addition to that, that they're usually some of the
- 4:23better players. So most of them were all
- 4:26Americans or captains or whatever.
- 4:28So I bought 1 and I bought 1 because I always wanted one.
- 4:33And my buddy Don, who lives in the Cleveland area, is a big
- 4:37football collector and he has most of them.
- 4:41He has like 30 of them and I, I've seen them and they're
- 4:46beautiful. And, and so I bought 1 because
- 4:49it popped up on eBay and it was an old grade.
- 4:52I mean, not we're talking like 1990s graded card leading zero
- 4:58and it got a four and it, it's probably more like a 2 1/2 and
- 5:03it popped up and they've gone way up in price recently.
- 5:07And so it, it popped up for $850 and I'm like, that's not enough.
- 5:13It's it's definitely worth more than that.
- 5:15I'm going to buy it because I've always wanted one and I know
- 5:20that I can't really lose on this deal because if I end up wanting
- 5:24to not have it, I could at least get my money back.
- 5:27But I'm going to buy it because this is a rare opportunity to
- 5:31have a pretty nice one. Usually there's major back
- 5:34damage, major creasing. A lot of them because they have
- 5:38black borders and a black back. People would fill it in with
- 5:41marker so they'd be altered. So rarely is there one even with
- 5:44a number. This one was a four.
- 5:47There was, I think it's like a pop due to higher.
- 5:52Well, I bought it for $850 and I'm just like, I have to buy
- 5:56this card. So I bought it and I was
- 5:59thrilled with it. It was a great addition.
- 6:02And then like a week, not even a week, four or five days after it
- 6:06showed up, I'm doing the, the CIA auction watch party for the
- 6:15end of the auction on 4 collectors.
- 6:18And there were two of them for sale.
- 6:20And I was bidding on one of them.
- 6:22And one of them was an SGC 3. And I was bidding on it.
- 6:26And I was like, I, I think I'm going to try, I hopefully can
- 6:29get this for under $1000 now I'll have two of them.
- 6:33I was like maybe 900 is what I'll get it for.
- 6:36And then there was a 2 1/2 SGC 2 1/2 and the, the PSA.
- 6:42No sorry the SGC 3 ended up selling for like 2800 dollars.
- 6:50Of the same player, same athlete.
- 6:52Not the same player, not the same player but the one I had
- 6:56was a Princeton athlete, 2 two time captain.
- 7:00They won the the NCAA tournament or not tournament but they won
- 7:05the championship both of those years and he was an all American
- 7:08one year. This other guy, the one that
- 7:11sold for more was it was maybe a slightly lower pop by like 3 or
- 7:164. And he was a two time all
- 7:20American. But I mean, they, they weren't
- 7:23like there wasn't like the NFL back then.
- 7:25So none of them are like household names.
- 7:27And then the, the 2.5 sold for like 1850.
- 7:33And I'm like, I, I was literally on the watch party as we're
- 7:37looking at them and I'm, I'm, I'm pointing them out 'cause I'm
- 7:40like, I was bidding on this, but I'm out now.
- 7:42And they just were literally, we pull it up on the screen and it
- 7:44was just like up $100, up another $100, up another $100.
- 7:48I'm like, I have one of these, but I don't know if I'm going to
- 7:52have it for much longer because it got so expensive.
- 7:57I was just like, I don't know. I don't know if I don't know if
- 8:03I should keep it because it might be worth way more than I
- 8:10wanted. And the reason I'm bringing this
- 8:13story up is because there are a lot of cards we have in our
- 8:17collection that don't have sentimental attachment.
- 8:20It's not like a friend gave it, It's not like our parent gave,
- 8:22it's not like our childhood card.
- 8:25But we like having it in our collection.
- 8:29At what point should a person consider selling it?
- 8:35Because it's sort of like for us collectors, you know, in this
- 8:39collecting community, like if you buy and sell cards, you're
- 8:43like, that's like a cardinal sin.
- 8:45You can't do that. Like that's very much looked
- 8:48down upon. If you buy a card and then you
- 8:52sell the card for more money, like that's like you're doing
- 8:55something wrong. Is, is the impression that a lot
- 8:57of people get. I did a conversation one time, I
- 9:02think it was on Mike Moynihan's channel the last time he had me
- 9:05on like 3 years ago. And he he literally and and he
- 9:12said I used to look down on people who sold cards because
- 9:16literally if you sold cards, I would like look down on you.
- 9:20I was just like, you're not a real collector if you sell.
- 9:22He said that and he goes and I've since change some on that
- 9:25and there are times and because I was like, well, Mike, didn't
- 9:28you sell like a whole bunch of, you know, insert cards and auto
- 9:32cards and stuff? He did a whole video series on
- 9:34it and he's like, yeah. And I've, you know, I've kind of
- 9:37moved off of that. I know I'm taking a long time,
- 9:40but I'm setting the the premise for the question that I'm asking
- 9:44you, which is at what point is it reasonable a good idea, OK to
- 9:55sell a card that you actually like having?
- 10:00I think the answer is anytime, anytime you want to sell a card,
- 10:07you should sell that card. And let me turn this off here.
- 10:11Now, but does that include, I mean that includes cards that
- 10:15you like having like some people like, I don't care what it's
- 10:18worth, I'm not selling it. Yeah.
- 10:20But I think, I think it's crazy to judge people for selling
- 10:25cards. I think if you want to sell the
- 10:30card, you should sell it. I've heard somebody, maybe it
- 10:32was to you who recently said if you wouldn't buy it for that
- 10:36price, then you should sell it. Now let me ask you another
- 10:40question though. If someone were to sell their
- 10:43cards, who And like say you had a collection.
- 10:46Like. Who do you think you should sell
- 10:49it to? What a Segway.
- 10:51I would go to chrissewellcollectorinvestordealerinthatordersewellsportscards@gmail.com
- 10:59if I had a collection of cards to sell.
- 11:01I would go through Chris if I thought that he So I just sent a
- 11:05bunch of very, very low value cards to Com C, but those are
- 11:10low value. I, I, I kept some back, some I
- 11:12regret. I should have sent them to
- 11:14Chris. There were some higher value
- 11:16Carly Ostremsky cards. Should have sent them to Chris
- 11:20Sewell and I would have if I had really given it a lot of
- 11:22thought. Chris Sewell is the best dealer.
- 11:25He's our friend and he is the best dealer out there.
- 11:27He gives very fair prices. He'll explain to you the prices
- 11:31e-mail and his e-mail address is in the description to this
- 11:34video. I'm I'm counting on you, Greg,
- 11:36and to the podcast. And it's also found on
- 11:41sportscardclubhouse.com. You can see a picture of Chris
- 11:44and get his information. Yes, yes.
- 11:49So yeah, that's, I would go to Chris Sewell if I were, if I
- 11:52wanted to sell a big card or a collection of cards, yeah.
- 11:57The reason I went to Com C is because there were a lot of
- 11:59cards I didn't think he would be he would want to buy because
- 12:02they were low value, low liquidity cards.
- 12:05And, and I think, you know, I've had a lot of people in my Q&A's
- 12:11and in my comments over the years say I'm worried about my
- 12:17widow getting ripped off if I have a collection and they're
- 12:23not graded. Because if they're not graded,
- 12:27then it's harder to know what they are and what they're worth
- 12:31and who to trust. And that is honestly, genuinely,
- 12:36that's the sort of thing we're like the note I might leave to
- 12:39my spouse is called Chris, like literally because I trust Chris
- 12:44and Chris would, would do, would do the right thing.
- 12:49So OK, so let me finish how this played out.
- 12:54I, I went and I the card that I bought for 8:50 like a month
- 13:00ago, I see it selling for I, I see similar comps selling for
- 13:07like 1900 and 2700 or something. And I go, well, I wouldn't pay
- 13:15those numbers for this card. If if I went to a card show and
- 13:19I had $3000 in my pocket and one of those and my card was there,
- 13:23I wouldn't buy it. So at some point I believe that
- 13:28cards, the value of the card is more for somebody else than it
- 13:33is for me. And that's what happened with my
- 13:37dad's 1960 tops, Mickey Mantle and APSA 9 is he got it graded
- 13:44it, it eventually ended up in a nine holder and and then he was
- 13:48like, great, I love the card and he kept it for many, several
- 13:53years. But then the value of it climbed
- 13:56and climbed and climbed and climbed and he said it is not
- 13:59worth that much to me. So he ended up selling it and he
- 14:02actually sold it to memory Lane and, and I the, the reason I
- 14:08bring it up is because I do feel like there's this judgement from
- 14:15some about selling cards. And OK, let me ask you, let me
- 14:21ask you another question. A very well known dealer in the
- 14:25community who everyone would recognize the dealer's name.
- 14:28There's probably 5 dealers that that would you, could I narrow
- 14:34it down? Do one of them apparently bought
- 14:40a card at the last CIA auction because there was a card I was
- 14:43looking at it, I was very interested in the card and it
- 14:46got out of my stratosphere. So I didn't end up bidding on it
- 14:50anymore and I let it go and it went high.
- 14:53And then I just saw on eBay that well known dealer had that card
- 15:00marked up about $1000 over what it went for.
- 15:04And that dealer apparently is now using some auctions to
- 15:11source cards. Another dealer in the community
- 15:16that I've bought from multiple times at Strongsville, at the
- 15:20National, I will go to comp a card in a particular grade and
- 15:27when I look it up and I comp it, the last comp was that exact one
- 15:32with that exact serial number at like an Rea auction or a golden
- 15:37auction or one of these auction houses.
- 15:39It seems to me like some dealers are starting to just put out
- 15:44bids on a bunch of different cards at auctions and then if
- 15:49they buy them for whatever they feel is below their markup
- 15:54amount, they're they're sourcing cards there.
- 15:58Is that OK? Is is that cool or should
- 16:01auction houses only be for collectors?
- 16:06I think it's crazy, and I would hope that I wouldn't end up
- 16:11missing out on the original auction and then discover it
- 16:16through a dealer that has marked it up significantly since they
- 16:19bought it. But I think it's perfect if
- 16:21that's what a dealer wants to do, if that's what they need to
- 16:23do to source inventory. I don't, I don't have a problem
- 16:28with that. I wouldn't personally purchase a
- 16:32card that I knew they had just bought for, I don't know, you
- 16:38know, they just bought it at market price.
- 16:40If you're buying cards, if you're a dealer and you're
- 16:42buying cards at 70% and then selling them to me at 100% of
- 16:47comps, OK. But if you're buying it at
- 16:50auction, that is market price then and then marking it up.
- 16:54I don't love it, but if that's what they need to do and then it
- 16:58sits for months and months and months, then that's a that's a
- 17:02them problem, not a me problem. OK is with rare cards like this
- 17:09Mayo card that I bought so so I don't even know if I did I
- 17:13finish the story. So what I ended up doing is I
- 17:16said I think this card is worth more than I would buy it for,
- 17:21and if I wouldn't buy it for what I think I might be able to
- 17:24sell it for, then I'm just going to put it up for sale.
- 17:28So I literally, I put it up for sale on eBay.
- 17:32I just had bought it on eBay a month ago and I'm like, if this
- 17:35is worth a lot, I'd be willing to sell it, but I'd prefer to
- 17:39keep it but not at these amounts.
- 17:42So I put it up on eBay for $2500 and in the description I
- 17:49literally wrote I can even pull it up.
- 17:52I literally wrote I don't want to sell this card, I like this
- 17:57card, but for the right price I'd be willing to move it.
- 18:03So somebody within 24 hours offered me $2000.
- 18:07Now again, I bought this card on a buy it now on eBay the same
- 18:12platform for $850 a month ago and this guy just offered me
- 18:16$2000. I'm sure he comped it.
- 18:19I'm sure he saw it just sold for 8:50.
- 18:21But the guy was still willing to pay me 1150 over what I had just
- 18:27bought it for. And I'm like that point, I was
- 18:31like, I might buy it for 2000 but I wouldn't buy it for 2250.
- 18:38So I countered with 2250 and the guy took it.
- 18:42So I bought it for 8:50. I sold it for 2250 and part of
- 18:47me feels like I did something wrong.
- 18:51Like like the dealer example that you just gave where they
- 18:55buy something at auction and then turn around and mark it up.
- 18:58I think that's fine. It's not I, I wouldn't buy it
- 19:02from them. I wouldn't buy that, buy it from
- 19:03you unless I really, really, really needed that card.
- 19:10You know, these cards, the rare cards are going up, are
- 19:13skyrocketing in value. And in just in the second-half
- 19:18of this year, we've seen significant increases in values,
- 19:23say sold values of rare cards, of iconic cards.
- 19:28And maybe that person missed out on the $850 listing and now they
- 19:32know they saw it out there and they said, shoot, I've got to
- 19:35buy this now because I might not see this card for years.
- 19:38Yeah, yeah. I mean, there's only 20 of them.
- 19:41I mean, that's how I felt when there were certain pirate cards.
- 19:46And I'm trying to build my set of 50 cards and there's like one
- 19:49I'd never seen for sale. And I'm like, this guy's asking
- 19:52double what I think it's worth, but there's only like 15 that
- 19:59have ever been graded so. Yeah.
- 20:02This one's double, but I may not get it and I don't know it.
- 20:07It's now. OK, let me let's continue this
- 20:11with a little bit of a turn in the in the conversation because
- 20:16the values of rare cards have gone nuts.
- 20:21Do you think if somebody was quote, UN quote, an investor,
- 20:25somebody was looking to buy cards that were going to go up
- 20:29the most? Would it be smarter to buy cards
- 20:33like a Sandy Koufax rookie and a Roberto Clemente rookie and a
- 20:39Bob Gibson rookie? Or would it be to buy a pop 20
- 20:45Mayo cut plug football card of a guy that nobody's heard of?
- 20:50Which of those types of cards, the iconic cards that aren't
- 20:55rare, or the rare cards that maybe are from an iconic set but
- 21:01not an iconic name? Which of those things do you
- 21:05think in 10 years has the most upside?
- 21:09Well, the iconic cards can become rare if you get them in a
- 21:13higher grade, if you get them autographed, things like that,
- 21:16and make them more rare, more iconic, more valuable in the
- 21:20long term. People talk about junk wax cards
- 21:23but you can get a junk wax card autographed and have it be semi
- 21:27rare and have it be worth more money.
- 21:31It's not to say many of them are worth a lot more but I think a
- 21:35Sandy Koufax rookie card you can get those for a few 100 bucks.
- 21:39500 bucks I don't know what they are now.
- 21:41I paid I think 5 or 600 for mine.
- 21:46But if you add if you get a rookie autograph, I think he
- 21:50charges like $3000 for his autograph on his rookie card.
- 21:54That card all of a sudden becomes worth many thousands of
- 21:57dollars and it's much much more rare than just his rookie card.
- 22:02Get a high grade rookie card. I don't know what high grade for
- 22:06a 55 tops would be. Probably A8, probably lower pop.
- 22:12Yeah, so the condition scarcity route of the iconic card funny
- 22:20story that you mentioned Sandy Kofax.
- 22:23So there's a collector that lives in Northern California who
- 22:26I met at some card shows and he he watches the channel and, and
- 22:31he was collecting cards and, and then he's he stumbled across
- 22:36like a it was either a Willie Mays or a Hank Aaron autographed
- 22:39card. And it like it like the light
- 22:42bulb went off sort of like it has for our buddy Tony.
- 22:45And he started going down that route of going, I'm I'm going to
- 22:48go, I'm going to go for all these.
- 22:50So he's gotten heavy into ticket stubs autographed from
- 22:58significant events. So like, he has a couple of the
- 23:03Yom Kippur games and he sent them off to get signed.
- 23:09And, and Sandy Koufax will do like a private signing.
- 23:13He's in his, he's like 91 or something.
- 23:15He'll do a private signing, but there will only be like 50
- 23:18slots. And like if it's on a rookie
- 23:21card, it's like 2 grand or something.
- 23:24If it's on a ticket, if it's on his debut ticket, it's this
- 23:27much. If it's another ticket, it's
- 23:29this much. So he got a couple of Yom Kippur
- 23:34ticket stubs signed and he had a couple of rookie cards signed,
- 23:41and one of them he bought the rookie card in like a six.
- 23:46He sent it, it got signed. He then sent it into PSA to
- 23:52because he had to crack it. It comes back where the
- 23:55autograph got a nine instead of a 10, and then the card went
- 24:00from A6 to A5. So he got like kicked in the
- 24:04nuts twice on that one because he wanted a high grade autograph
- 24:11and a high grade card obviously because the value goes up
- 24:14exponentially apparently. Which should that be?
- 24:17I don't know. But so you think you think
- 24:23iconic cards with a rarer characteristic it has is like
- 24:31what sort of what like Tony Southern collector Tony is doing
- 24:35over something like these people who are buying rare issue cards
- 24:42where there's four of them kind of thing.
- 24:43You think that that's got the better upside?
- 24:47I think so. You froze on me.
- 24:55I don't know if it's on your end or if it's on my end.
- 24:59So as we're oh, you're back. You know, my Internet never,
- 25:05ever, ever, ever goes out. But this, I think this is our
- 25:08second recording in a row, but it's gone out.
- 25:10It's fine. I I just I filled the dead.
- 25:13Air a little bit thanks. You have to be careful with
- 25:17these iconic card scarcity issues too, because if you think
- 25:21about the 1989 Upper deck Ken Griffey Junior rookie card in a
- 25:2410, the value of PSA 10 of that card has skyrocketed.
- 25:28It it went, I don't know where it is now, but it was $2000 at
- 25:31the beginning of this year. It rose up to between 5:00 and
- 25:34$6000. That's not scarce.
- 25:37Then you add an autograph to it and of course it becomes much
- 25:40more valuable. The problem is you need it in a
- 25:4410/10 to see significant improvement.
- 25:48I have a Ken Griffey junior in APSA 8 for the card, 10 for the
- 25:53autograph and that has not gone up as much as the the plain old
- 25:5810. So my autographed PSA 810 card
- 26:03has gone from 450 ish or $500 to like 550 to $600.00.
- 26:10Not much appreciation, but if you have a 910 or a 10/10,
- 26:16you've seen some pretty good gains from that.
- 26:19So the last Ken Griffey Junior Upper Deck PSA 10 at auction was
- 26:26an eBay auction yesterday, and it closed at 4425, which I think
- 26:34it might have been higher than that, yeah.
- 26:37Still more than double. It's up 120% just since the
- 26:43beginning of this year. And Adam, our partner here, Adam
- 26:47of Splendid Sports, that was one of the cards he cited when he
- 26:50said, you know what? I am taking a break from buying
- 26:52cards until this huge explosion has ended.
- 26:56And I've stepped back to, not completely, but I've started
- 27:00buying Red Sox refractors, early Red Sox refractors which I can
- 27:04get for 10 or $20 instead of going after these 45600 dollar
- 27:09cards that I really like doing. But those 45600 dollar cards
- 27:13that I was buying a year ago are now going for a thousand 1200
- 27:18dollars. Really it it, it's interesting
- 27:23how the trends go with some of this stuff.
- 27:26And like you said, the rarity with like that Griffey.
- 27:30But imagine having like a Griffey and A10 and you go, I'm
- 27:34going to crack it and get it signed.
- 27:37Somebody sent me, I think it was an Instagram DM if I'm not
- 27:43mistaken, it was an Yvonne Rodriguez card.
- 27:47I should search for it, but it was an Yvonne Rodriguez card and
- 27:52the card was in a nine and he cracked it to get it autographed
- 27:59at like A at like a private signing.
- 28:02It came back. So then he sent it back in for
- 28:05dual grading and it got a 10/10. So he actually benefited by
- 28:16cracking it and then autographing it and and then he
- 28:20said that he got up charged. Gosh, where was that?
- 28:23I've seen that too. Now that you're talking about
- 28:25it, I don't remember. I might even have that as a
- 28:27future video in my list. I have a list of like 150 future
- 28:32videos. I think I have that in there.
- 28:35But the risk there, Greg, is the enormous.
- 28:38Enormous. Just the cracking the card out
- 28:40is a risk of damaging the card in some way.
- 28:44And then the putting it in a container of some sort to mail
- 28:48it, putting it through the mail, having the athlete and the
- 28:51athlete's handlers pulling it out, pawing at it, and then
- 28:55putting it back in the mail. There is so much risk there.
- 28:58And then you got to put it back in the mail to PSA or whoever,
- 29:01CGC, whoever you're having authenticate it to.
- 29:05To think that you can get a nine and have it come back a nine is
- 29:10crazy, but haven't take a nine and have it come back a 10 is
- 29:13way crazier. Here it is, I'm showing it on
- 29:16the screen. It's a beautiful signature on a
- 29:18beautiful card. In a great spot.
- 29:21In a great spot and it's a 10/10 and it was just a nine for the
- 29:28card. He did say he got an up charge
- 29:33of 100 extra dollars. He said the last one at auction
- 29:37sold for 13 to $1400 and he paid 190 just for the card.
- 29:43So he's up, you know, he's up over $1000 from the whole
- 29:47experience. Wild.
- 29:52Yeah, I have a have a 91 upper deck final edition Yvonne
- 29:56Rodriguez autographed and I'm really regretting my choice
- 29:58because that tops one with the autograph across the chest looks
- 30:02so much better. The one that I just showed you
- 30:05is yeah, the Tops traded. Yeah, and it's a Tiffany.
- 30:10Oh. So we got the tops, traded
- 30:13Tiffany. There's more than 9 rarity
- 30:16there. That card checks a lot of boxes
- 30:19in the rarity factor in the condition factor.
- 30:22But I mean, and that's a whole nother thing is like the fact
- 30:26that it could just go from A9 to A10 is just it's just bonkers.
- 30:32Back to your original question, I, I bought a card, I bought a
- 30:35Caitlin Clark card back in December of 2022.
- 30:41I think she was like a freshman or a sophomore at Iowa and I
- 30:46thought that she's super exciting.
- 30:48This is going to be great. I bought a autographed Sports
- 30:52Illustrated for Kids card of her for $90.00.
- 30:56She started taking off a little bit.
- 30:58I sent it off to PSA, got a dual graded authentic on the card,
- 31:02which was what I asked for because I didn't want it to be
- 31:04graded, and then a 10 on the autograph.
- 31:07And then as she blew up more and more and more and the hobby
- 31:10started picking up on her, I said I love this card, but do I
- 31:14love it as much as it's worth? Would I pay $2000 for it?
- 31:19And ultimately the answer is no, there's no way I would spend
- 31:22$2000 on that card. And so I listed on eBay for like
- 31:272500 bucks and sold it for I think 1850.
- 31:32And I, I flipped that money, took that 1850 minus taxes of
- 31:37course, pay your taxes folks to the National and bought 3 big
- 31:40cards that I'm really really happy with.
- 31:43Now I do still think about that card often and check to see if
- 31:46any have sold it. Still the all time highest to
- 31:49ever sell at public, sell publicly.
- 31:52But you know, at some point if it sells for like $10,000, I'm
- 31:55going to kick myself. Yeah, but you know, and and and
- 31:59here's the other thing is again, I'm I don't want to put my
- 32:03values on others or others values on me.
- 32:06But there's this some people don't really have to take
- 32:13advantage of those you and far between opportunities like you
- 32:17did on the Caitlin Clark or I did on this mail card it.
- 32:22But when you're in a different budget, you know, for me to just
- 32:26pick up an extra after taxes over $1000, like just fell from
- 32:33the sky. That is a massive amount of
- 32:37money for my budget, a massive amount.
- 32:40You know, it's probably closer like $1200 that I net out of
- 32:43that deal and and I net the $1200, which then I turned
- 32:49around and I bought, you know, a, a Walter Johnson T2O6
- 32:54portrait card, which is like a dream car that is long since
- 32:58long felt out of reach. But I just knocked $1200 off the
- 33:02price. So, you know, a lot of people
- 33:05will be like, oh, you know, buy what you like and don't sell it.
- 33:09Hold it. That's the hobby of it.
- 33:11You know, we're not flippers. And I do understand that.
- 33:15But when you're in an income bracket or you're in a place
- 33:21where the amount that you can budget for cards is minimal,
- 33:26sometimes we have to, you know, look at the opportunity cost of
- 33:30a situation and say, I think I'm going to extract the capital out
- 33:35of this card that I've acquired through a a good purchase and
- 33:40utilize it on this thing that I'd rather have.
- 33:42And the three big cards that you got at the National, I'm
- 33:47guessing you'd rather have than the Caitlin Clark card.
- 33:50And so it was a good move for you, Sandy.
- 33:52Koufax rookie, Wayne Gretzky, rookie.
- 33:55Those are the two that really stick out.
- 33:56I don't. I don't remember off the top of
- 33:58my head. The third one I got, Oh Jim
- 34:01Brown rookie was another one. Really.
- 34:03Yeah, the 2024 National I, I got some really, really good cards.
- 34:09I don't know, did you get the tops or a peachy Gretzky?
- 34:13Tops. I don't.
- 34:15I don't need the peachy. You don't need that.
- 34:17It's the same card. Yeah.
- 34:20Is it though? I mean.
- 34:22For your scarcity argument, it's certainly not, but I just want
- 34:26to have the card. No, I, I get it and I've gone
- 34:29back and forth and it's a card I will have at some point.
- 34:34But him being Edmonton Oilers, him being from Canada, I think
- 34:41of I think of Canada as the hockey country of.
- 34:46Course. I could.
- 34:48I don't know. I would be happy with either,
- 34:51but for a long time I was like I want the tops and more recently,
- 34:55in fact, I saw a card the other day that it was a a really well
- 35:02centered Gretzky O Peachy and it was in like a 2 or a three and
- 35:10it was autographed and it was an early Gretzky autograph.
- 35:13It wasn't like the the newer one that he does in all the upper
- 35:16deck cards. It was like it was like a plain
- 35:19days black ball, not ballpoint. It was like a black belt tip
- 35:25marker, like not a high quality sharpie, but it was a nice
- 35:29autograph card was worn and loved but treasured.
- 35:35And I saw that card pop up and I'm like, oh man, like I'm not
- 35:41going to do this because I can't.
- 35:43But oh, if I had some money, that would have been just an O
- 35:48peachy Gretzky, perfectly centered plain days autograph.
- 35:53I was just like, man, how am I? How how do I walk away from
- 35:56this? But those things just show up.
- 36:00I don't know. Well, we're 3536 minutes in.
- 36:06You know, we are recording this on Christmas Eve because we
- 36:10don't set boundaries with our lives.
- 36:13And so we're here, and my wife rolled her eyes at me as I
- 36:19walked in to record. Is there anything 'cause this
- 36:25is, well, I guess what we might record one more time before the
- 36:30end of the year, but likely not. Is there any sort of maybe next
- 36:35time we talk about New Year's resolutions with the hobby, is
- 36:38that a good? Idea.
- 36:39Yeah. Let's do it.
- 36:41I got a few ideas of some things that I need to change about
- 36:44myself in multiple facets of life.
- 36:50Looking forward to it. Yes.
- 36:52OK, well another one in the books, yes.
- 36:56I appreciate your feedback. I feel slightly better about
- 37:00flipping a card. Several friends are now calling
- 37:03me Greg the Flipper, but I. Just come up with a noise like
- 37:08flipper made. Yeah, yeah.
- 37:11The, the, the dolphin, Yeah, yeah.
- 37:16So I don't know. I, I think we're all in
- 37:19different places and we can't put our own values on other
- 37:23people's decisions because everybody's got a different
- 37:27situation to a different story. And, and what they're trying to
- 37:30work towards. And whether I keep a card for
- 37:33two years before I sell it or a week and sell it.
- 37:37I I don't know if one is better than the other, but I'm sure I'm
- 37:42sure everyone will let us know down below in the comments of
- 37:45their thoughts. Yep.
- 37:49Well, Greg, and to the viewers, Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays,
- 37:53Happy New Year to you and your families.

- 38:20there who has subscribed and listened and welcomed us into
