- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive, right?
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. Today we are in Psalm 134, the
- 0:19very last of the song of a sense, and we end with another
- 0:25one of these little three verse psalms and I hope that it'll be
- 0:30an encouragement to you today. The songs of ascent were those
- 0:35that the children of Israel would sing 3 * a year as they
- 0:38were going up to Jerusalem to celebrate the three annual
- 0:42feasts. And this Psalm says this, now
- 0:47bless Yahweh. All you servants of Yahweh who
- 0:51stand in Yahweh's house at night, lift up your hands in the
- 0:55holy place and bless Yahweh. May Yahweh, Maker of heaven and
- 1:01earth, bless you from Zion. Let's look first at verse #1 He
- 1:07says, now bless Yahweh. This word is the word baraku.
- 1:14This is to bless, to praise that you would say God is, if you
- 1:22will. God is great, God is kind, God
- 1:26is faithful and consistent. God is holy, God is just, God is
- 1:33fearsome and awesome. God is the one that I need to
- 1:39adore. God is my savior.
- 1:42He is the one who provides for my needs.
- 1:45All of these are ways to bless, to praise God.
- 1:49Can I ask you, when was the last time that you praised God, that
- 1:54you said good things about him to others?
- 1:57Can I tell you just for me what, what this does for my heart?
- 2:01I think in myself, I can very often ask God for stuff.
- 2:07I can very often maybe even think good things about God.
- 2:12But how often do I tell other people about how good God has
- 2:15been to me? Have I thanked the Lord for the
- 2:18Savior that He is to me? Do other people know that I am,
- 2:24you know, crazy about Jesus? Am IA, You know, to quote the
- 2:28old song, am IA Jesus freak. Do other people know it?
- 2:33Can I encourage you? There is no better reputation
- 2:35than that you can have then man. That person really thinks
- 2:39something much of his God. We can often, perhaps rightly,
- 2:47regularly want to share our faith with people and talk
- 2:52about, you know, the sin of man and our need for repentance and
- 2:56for forgiveness and of our need to turn to the Savior.
- 3:02But what we're told in Scripture is that God's kindness is
- 3:06intended to lead us to repentance, that it's
- 3:09recognizing who God is that makes us fall in love with him.
- 3:15Think about it for my wife. She is very talented and in a
- 3:20multiplicity of areas, far more talented than I am.
- 3:24She's can do a lot of things with crafts.
- 3:27She's a great painter. I've got a couple paintings in
- 3:30the room that my wife has done. She is a phenomenal singer, has
- 3:37a beautiful voice, she is a great cook, she bakes some
- 3:42delicious things, and she just is able to do so, so much in
- 3:49life. However, if someone had just
- 3:52told younger Brian, here's this woman and here's all of the
- 3:57things that she can do for you, well, that'd be all well and
- 4:02fine. But it's as I actually get to
- 4:05know Samantha that I fell in love with her.
- 4:08I didn't fall in love with her because of the things that she
- 4:12can do. I fell in love with her as a
- 4:15person. And so it is with our God.
- 4:18May we lead others to know God through not simply what they
- 4:23need to do in response to Him, but may they get to know Him
- 4:29every single time. As Tabernacle Talk starts, you
- 4:33hear the phrase from our church's mission statement.
- 4:37Know Christ, grow in his Word, show His love to others.
- 4:41And that first step is the most important step.
- 4:45Know Christ and may we help other people to get to know who
- 4:50he is. So may we bless Yahweh.
- 4:53Then that second line, they're all you servants of Yahweh.
- 4:56What is our relationship with our God?
- 5:02Now I'll say as well, we are our God's friends.
- 5:06That is what we are told. Even Jesus with the disciples in
- 5:09the upper room, he says, I don't call you servants because a
- 5:13servant doesn't know everything that his master is doing.
- 5:17He says, but I have called you friends and I have told you
- 5:21everything that the Father has told me.
- 5:23And So what a joy it is that we are friends of God.
- 5:26But I also think of what so many of the disciples said as they
- 5:33wrote the letters of Scripture to churches.
- 5:37I think of Paul in particular. I even think of Jesus's half
- 5:40brothers, of James and Judah, that both that all of those
- 5:45individuals called themselves servants, doulos, even slaves of
- 5:51Christ Jesus. They say whatever he says, he's
- 5:54the Lord, he's the master. And so we're going to do it now.
- 5:58He has great affection and love for us and he views us as his
- 6:02children. He views us as his friends.
- 6:05There's a great old song, I can't remember who the original
- 6:08group was that did. I think it was something like
- 6:11Lakewood Worship that did the song Friend of God.
- 6:15There's a great rendition of it by the Crab family.
- 6:21Jason Crab and Adam and Aaron Crab are powerhouse vocalist
- 6:26that do a tremendous job of singing that song.
- 6:30And So what a wonder that we are friends of God.
- 6:35But I apologize for anyone that is watching this.
- 6:38My chair is is not behaving itself well and so I keep kind
- 6:44of accidentally scooting down. So give me just one second to
- 6:46get back up. So what a joy that we are
- 6:51friends of God, but may we also view ourselves as those that are
- 6:56here to accomplish the will of God.
- 6:58We are His servants, and what a good master he is to serve.
- 7:03He is not a master who is uninterested in putting the work
- 7:07in. He actually became a servant
- 7:09himself, as we here in Philippians 2.
- 7:12He took upon himself the form of a slave, the form of a servant,
- 7:17and was made in the likeness of men.
- 7:20And so may we say, God, whatever you want, I'm going to do it.
- 7:25You have a way that you want me to parent.
- 7:27I'm going to parent that way. You have a way that you want me
- 7:30to work at my job. I'm going to work that way.
- 7:33God, there is a way that you want me to study and be a light
- 7:38at school. I'm going to do that because I'm
- 7:41the servant, I'm the slave, You're the master.
- 7:44What you say I will do, He says now bless Yahweh.
- 7:49All you servants of Yahweh who stand in Yahweh's house at
- 7:52night, this is the end of the day.
- 7:55You might even think of this as the end of the time that the
- 7:59children of Israel would have been there.
- 8:01Maybe this is the send off song that they would sing.
- 8:04And So what a joy to be in Yahweh's house, not just in the
- 8:11morning but at night. Right now it actually is night
- 8:13time. I'm recording some of these
- 8:15before our men's Bible study that we do on the 2nd and 4th
- 8:18Thursdays of each month. And I'm glad to be in God's
- 8:23house with God's people at whatever time the angels are
- 8:26around the throne of God, night and day, crying out holy, holy,
- 8:31holy. And so it behooves us as the
- 8:34Church of God to also be praising the Lord day and night.
- 8:40Verse #2 Lift up your hands in the holy place and bless Yahweh
- 8:45here. I love this thought.
- 8:46Lift up your hands. That there is no portion of us
- 8:49that should not be dedicated to the worship of God.
- 8:53We don't just worship God with our minds.
- 8:55We don't just worship God with our mouths.
- 8:58Let's get in some, you know, sanctified some some holy
- 9:01dancing. Let's get in some hand raising.
- 9:04Let us be those like David who danced before the Lord as they
- 9:07brought the ark of the covenant into Jerusalem.
- 9:10And though those that did not worship the Lord, though they
- 9:14scorned him for his worship. He said I don't really care.
- 9:18I'm not doing this for you. I'm doing this for the Lord and
- 9:22so may every iota of who we are be dedicated to worshiping the
- 9:26Lord. Frankly, that's one of the
- 9:27reasons I really the way playing an instrument is because I get
- 9:30to put, you know, my, my arms into the action.
- 9:35My, my back is holding the guitar strap.
- 9:37I'm very often tapping my toes or tapping my feet so that I'm
- 9:41keeping the beat. And so all of me is involved in
- 9:45worship. And I want to encourage you
- 9:47along with this lift up your hands in the holy place.
- 9:50It can be a good and a righteous thing to lift up your hands.
- 9:54There's kind of a funny TikTok trend going around right now
- 9:57where wives will take a video of their husbands as they are
- 10:02watching a football game and the reactions that they have.
- 10:05And then they'll put worship music like in the background of
- 10:09the video afterwards. And so it looks like this guy is
- 10:13so enthusiastic and, and cheering and praising and
- 10:17lifting his hands for a worship song when really it was for a
- 10:21football game. And I think that's always a
- 10:24welcome reminder to us of what do we get excited about.
- 10:28My buddy John Cooney had put in our church Facebook Group A
- 10:35couple of weeks ago a thing of you should at least be as
- 10:39excited about God as you are about football.
- 10:41So next time your pastor makes a great point, pour Gatorade on
- 10:44him afterwards. And we had a good chuckle about
- 10:47that. But involve your entire self in
- 10:50the worship of your God. And then what's the kind of end
- 10:54of the song? The songs of Ascent, verse 3.
- 10:59May Yahweh, maker of heaven and earth, bless you from Zion.
- 11:04Yeah, we worship the Lord, we call on him.
- 11:06We're his servants. We adore him with everything we
- 11:09are. But then God blesses us.
- 11:12He provides for us, He praises us, and we are totally
- 11:17undeserving and unworthy of that.
- 11:20But our God rejoices over us. He loves that you are his child
- 11:26and he rejoices over you with singing.
- 11:28And so when we sing to him, it's it's a back and forth.
- 11:31It's the song of songs or the song of Solomon actually is such
- 11:35a great picture of this that you have the bride and the groom
- 11:39that are singing to one another about their love for each other.
- 11:44And so it is that even as we praise God that he loves us and
- 11:48he has lavished us with undeserved the grace and favor.
- 11:55Read Ephesians one and all of that is a here is how God views
- 12:00you as a result of what Jesus has done.
- 12:03And so may we adore this God, Yahweh, the God who made himself
- 12:08known to us, the self existent one who doesn't need us, but who
- 12:11desperately wants us. He is the Maker of everything,
- 12:15the skies and the land, heaven and earth, and He is blessing us
- 12:20from His place of holy worship, that New Jerusalem that is
- 12:25coming down, that God Himself is preparing even now.
- 12:28Know that God blesses you, He loves you, He cares for you, He
- 12:32is providing for your needs. And so today, live as His
- 12:36servant. Bless Him.
- 12:38Talk good about God to everyone that will hear it.
- 12:42Worship Him entirely with all of who you are and what a good,
- 12:47good God we serve. Thanks for tuning in.
- 12:50See you next time with Psalm 135.
