- 0:00Hey everyone, welcome back to the Laid Back Podcast.
- 0:03If you are joining me visually, you can see I'm in a new
- 0:08location. This is the wall of my house.
- 0:11I'm sitting on my back porch just trying to get some fresh
- 0:16air, some daylight, some sunlight because at this point,
- 0:20I don't really know what day it is when this comes out.
- 0:23Don't really know when that will be.
- 0:25At the time of the recording, it is September 10th.
- 0:28My daughter is 17 days old. 18 days old.
- 0:34My daughter is 18 days old At this point.
- 0:37I think I did that math right. No 17 was correct and she is
- 0:41currently sitting on my lap right here while I record.
- 0:44While I was sitting here, I was scrambling to figure out how I'm
- 0:50going to put another episode together, what that's actually
- 0:53going to look like, how am I going to find the time to get
- 0:56this done and keep producing content.
- 0:58Naturally, I could take a step back.
- 1:02It's super important for me to spend time with my daughter and
- 1:05be there for my wife. For those of you that listen to
- 1:08the Matt Swilley podcast that some of the best advice that
- 1:11I've heard so far is remember to be a husband first.
- 1:16Take care of my wife. That will ensure that my
- 1:19daughter will always be taken care of.
- 1:21So I I've tried to take that to heart, but what has occurred to
- 1:26me and what I really wanted to get out is ways to feel
- 1:33productive when you're stuck in an environment where you really
- 1:37feel like you can't get a ton complete.
- 1:40This is not the same as having surgery and being stuck.
- 1:47Just kind of feeling, I don't know, incomplete, kind of like a
- 1:51waste. I know those are aggressive
- 1:53words, but that's certainly how I felt when I was hurt.
- 1:57I wouldn't say I feel incomplete or like a waste of space right
- 2:02now as a father, but I definitely feel that way when it
- 2:06comes to supporting Gavin, John, Daryl, and the other members of
- 2:11the Flexpro Grip team. I I just hate that I haven't
- 2:14been able to be there as much. It's great that I've been able
- 2:18to be there for my wife and my daughter, but I do want to be
- 2:22there for all the players in the Flexpro Grip community, all the
- 2:26guys that I I work to serve every single day.
- 2:29It's forced me to figure out how can I finish each day knowing
- 2:36that I still provided something for others, enabling me to feel
- 2:44like I did enough. I do think, as I mentioned
- 2:48earlier, this is semi synonymous with what you can go through
- 2:53when you're injured or when you're rehabbing or when you're
- 2:56really at a place where you don't know where to go.
- 3:00The big thing I want to hit home on is just making a list.
- 3:06It's crazy. You probably don't want to hear
- 3:08this from me, but I think there's so much value in
- 3:12creating a list because from there you can actually
- 3:16understand what needs to be accomplished, what can be
- 3:19accomplished, and I can pretty much guarantee you are doing way
- 3:25more everyday than you think you are.
- 3:28Now this experiment might be a little bit of a kick in the butt
- 3:32for some of you. Where you feel like you're
- 3:36really stuck on your ass. But for the grand majority of
- 3:39you that might be tuning in here or guys who are rehabbing, I
- 3:44encourage you to cut yourself some slack and write down
- 3:47everything that you want to accomplish in a given day.
- 3:51And once you write that down, I guarantee you will feel so much
- 3:56better at the end of the day instead of just a waste of space
- 4:02or like you wasted a day. And they can be really simple
- 4:06things. Making your bed is a great way
- 4:08to start showering is huge. It's crazy.
- 4:12Now in parenthood, I'm early to it.
- 4:15This is probably the stuff that anybody, anybody could have told
- 4:18me. Like just make sure you take
- 4:20care of yourself. But truthfully, like getting the
- 4:22shower, getting a shave, trying to keep this bald head clean.
- 4:26Those are little things that each and every day make me feel
- 4:30better. And it's the same thing in
- 4:32rehab. If you can feel like yourself
- 4:35just by getting the grocery or I don't know, listening to a
- 4:40podcast, whether it's this one or another one, going for a
- 4:43walk, getting out of the house, breathing fresh air, touching
- 4:47grass, making food, calling someone, expressing gratitude.
- 4:53I know these aren't the things that you're normally coming to
- 4:57the Lay Back podcast for, but I, I just felt it so valuable to
- 5:02share. I know there's lots of other
- 5:05things that we could get into or I could get into, but that I was
- 5:10the big one that I really wanted to hit on.
- 5:13Make a list, focus on it, check things off and I promise you at
- 5:17the end of the day, you will feel more productive, you will
- 5:21feel better, you will feel like you accomplished something.
- 5:25And going back to my story now, yes, I feel great that I'm able
- 5:31to take care of my wife and take care of my daughter and spend
- 5:34time with them both. But you guys know those that
- 5:39follow the Lay Back podcast, those who use Flex Pro Grip, So
- 5:43much of what we strive to do is create a community and celebrate
- 5:49those who are a part of what we do, share their stories, help
- 5:54them out program, adjust things daily.
- 5:59We're playing with guys careers here and I hate leaving anyone
- 6:04out to dry. And unfortunately, there's been
- 6:07times so far where I haven't been able to get back to people
- 6:11or it's taken me a few days to get back to guys.
- 6:14I had a guy text me on Friday, whatever day of the week that
- 6:18was. Shoot, now I'm looking at my
- 6:20calendar here. I don't even know what day that
- 6:22was. Maybe that was the 4th or 5th,
- 6:25something like that. And I didn't respond to him
- 6:28until yesterday. I feel awful about that.
- 6:31But that's, that's where communication becomes so
- 6:35important. That's where honesty becomes so
- 6:37important. And if I make my list, if I know
- 6:42who I have to communicate to, maybe that's not going to
- 6:45happen. Or maybe I can offload that task
- 6:47to someone else around me. So not only is making a list
- 6:51going to help you feel better about what you are
- 6:54accomplishing, maybe it's going to improve your processes as a
- 6:58whole. Maybe it's going to enable you
- 7:01to find those who can help, whether that is a family member
- 7:05or if that is a coach that you work with.
- 7:08Going back to the rehab process now, separating from my story,
- 7:11maybe if you communicate the things that you are struggling
- 7:14with or the things that you maybe feel like you can't get
- 7:18done on a daily basis to the support staff you have around
- 7:21you, they can probably help. That's why we do this podcast.
- 7:25There's probably someone out there that's experienced
- 7:29something that you are going through.
- 7:32So reach out, open your mouth. close mouths don't get fed.
- 7:36I guarantee somebody around you can either help you directly or
- 7:41point you in the right direction.
- 7:43It's crazy to say, but I do think all of this starts from
- 7:48just making a list. Whether it's A to do list,
- 7:51whether it's goals, whatever you want to title it, I promise you,
- 7:56writing down what you want to accomplish, whether it's daily,
- 8:01whether it's weekly, monthly. In the future.
- 8:04Right now I want to focus on daily.
- 8:06Writing things down is going to make a difference when you feel
- 8:10like things are not within your control.
- 8:13So grab it by the horns. Take control of what you can
- 8:17control. Putting it on paper is
- 8:19definitely going to help with that process.
- 8:22Short 1 today guys. Hopefully this helps.
- 8:26If this resonates with someone out there, I'll be ecstatic.
- 8:31This might have just been an experiment for me to vent and
- 8:34remind myself what is important and what I can do to be the best
- 8:40father, husband, Co worker, coach, whatever.
- 8:43At this point I think selfishly a lot of this was for me, but
- 8:47again, hopefully someone out there got value from this.
- 8:50Everyone, thanks for tuning in for this short episode, and
- 8:54thanks for laying back with us.
