- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Wednesday, it is April 9th
- 0:16and thank you for tapping on play.
- 0:19Gee, I'm grateful that you are taking a moment in your full
- 0:22hectic busy day. Or maybe yours isn't so hectic
- 0:25and what a wonderful thing that is for you.
- 0:28But whatever your day is like, you have hit pause on the play
- 0:32button of life and hit play on the pot.
- 0:35Yeah, that's very confusing. You have invited me in, and we
- 0:37are going to read another chapter of God's Word together.
- 0:40And as you well know, we are working our way through the book
- 0:44of John heading toward that Easter day.
- 0:48And today is the day, friends, that you and I, fellow disciples
- 0:53of the living Lord, are going to follow him up those dusty stairs
- 0:58into the upper room where we're going to settle down for the
- 1:02next 5 days. As we spend this time with
- 1:05Jesus, hearing to his words, not just to those disciples, but to
- 1:09you and to me as his disciples alive today as captured by his
- 1:13beloved disciple John. So that we would know the truth
- 1:17of what it is that Jesus just yearned for his disciples to
- 1:21know in that last precious opportunity for Him to teach and
- 1:26share with them. So let's head up there together
- 1:30friends, so that we can hear these beautiful words of our
- 1:33Saviour as we head up there in John chapter 13.
- 1:47Before the Passover celebration, Jesus knew that his hour had
- 1:51come to leave this world and return to His Father.
- 1:55He had loved his disciples during His ministry on earth,
- 1:58and now he loved them to the very end.
- 2:01It was time for supper and the devil had already prompted
- 2:05Judah, son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus.
- 2:09Jesus knew that the Father had already given him authority over
- 2:13everything and that he had come from God and would return to
- 2:17God. So he got up from the table,
- 2:20took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist and
- 2:24poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash his
- 2:27disciples feet, drying them with the towel he had around him.
- 2:32When Jesus came to Simon Peter, Peter said to him, Lord, are you
- 2:37going to wash my feet? Jesus replied, You don't
- 2:41understand what I'm doing, but someday you will.
- 2:44No, Peter protested. It will never, ever wash my
- 2:48feet. Jesus replied, Unless I wash
- 2:52you, you won't belong to me. Simon Peter exclaimed.
- 2:56Then wash my hands and head as well, Lord, not just my feet.
- 3:01Jesus replied, A person who has bathed all over does not need to
- 3:06wash except for the feet to be entirely clean.
- 3:09And you disciples are clean, but not all of you.
- 3:14For Jesus knew who would betray him.
- 3:16And that is what he meant when he said, not all of you are
- 3:19clean after washing their feet. He put on his robe again and sat
- 3:23down and asked, Do you understand what I was doing?
- 3:27You call me teacher and Lord, and you were right, because
- 3:31that's what I am. And since I, your Lord and
- 3:34Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other's
- 3:39feet. I have given you an example to
- 3:41follow. Do as I have done to you.
- 3:45I tell you the truth. Slaves are not greater than
- 3:48their master, nor is the messenger more important than
- 3:52the one who sends the message. Now that you know these things,
- 3:56God will bless you for doing them.
- 3:59I am not saying these things to all of you.
- 4:02I know the ones I have chosen. But this fulfils the scripture
- 4:06that says the one who eats my food has turned against me.
- 4:11I tell you this beforehand so that when it happens you will
- 4:15believe that I am the Messiah. I tell you the truth, anyone who
- 4:21welcomes my messenger is welcoming me, and anyone who
- 4:25welcomes me is welcoming the Father who sent me.
- 4:29Now Jesus was deeply troubled, and he exclaimed.
- 4:34I tell you the truth, one of you will betray me.
- 4:38The disciples looked at each other, wondering whom it could
- 4:41mean. The disciple Jesus loved was
- 4:43sitting next to Jesus at the table.
- 4:46Simon Peter motioned to him and asked, who's he talking about?
- 4:50So that disciple leaned over to Jesus and asked, Lord, who is
- 4:55it? Jesus responded, It is the one
- 4:59to whom I give the bread I dip in the bowl, and when he had
- 5:03dipped it, he gave it to Judas, son of Simon Iscariot.
- 5:08When Judas had eaten the bread, Satan entered into him.
- 5:13Then Jesus told him, hurry and do what you're going to do.
- 5:18None of the others at the table knew what Jesus meant.
- 5:22Since Judas was the treasure, some thought Jesus was telling
- 5:25him to go and pay for the food or to give some money to the
- 5:28poor. So Judas left at once, going out
- 5:32into the night. As soon as Judas left the room,
- 5:36Jesus said the time has come for the Son of Man to enter into his
- 5:41glory, and God will be glorified because of him.
- 5:46And since God receives glory because of the Son, he will give
- 5:50his own glory to the Son, and he will do so at once.
- 5:55Dear children, I will be with you only a little longer.
- 6:00And as I told the Jewish leaders, you will search for me.
- 6:04But you can't come where I'm going.
- 6:06So now I am giving you a new commandment.
- 6:10Love each other, just as I have loved you.
- 6:14You should love each other. Your love for one another will
- 6:17prove to the world that you are my disciples.
- 6:21Simon Peter asked. Lord, where are you going?
- 6:25And Jesus replied, You can't go with me now, but you will follow
- 6:30me later. But why can't I come now, Lord,
- 6:34He asked. I'm ready to die for you, Jesus
- 6:37answered. Die for me.
- 6:40I tell you the truth, Peter, before the rooster crows
- 6:43tomorrow morning, you will deny three times that you even know
- 6:48me. Lord, thank you for your
- 7:00scriptures, Thank You for the way it teaches us about You and
- 7:05Your will for us. Not so that we can become more
- 7:09intellectually attuned, but that our hearts can draw closer to
- 7:13You, Jesus, and that we can know You better.
- 7:17Ah, we listen to you speaking and we hear the love that You
- 7:21have for us and just how much You want us to follow on what
- 7:26You have started sharing that love with others.
- 7:31Our Lord, your love is phenomenal and we are so
- 7:34grateful for it, but you know that we struggle and are so
- 7:39inadequate when we try and share your love the way that You
- 7:42intend us to. So we need Your help.
- 7:45Come Holy Spirit, continue to build up in us Your fruits that
- 7:52we would be Your representatives and that as we love the way that
- 7:57you have taught us, others would look at us, scratch their heads
- 8:00and say how do they love that way?
- 8:03And that they would know that you are the author of our love
- 8:07and all love. We praise you and we want to do
- 8:11that with every act in our lives.
- 8:14We are yours and we commit ourselves fresh to you today,
- 8:18Lord, and we pray all of this in your name, Jesus, Amen.
