- 0:13Speaker 1: Canadians to support the adoption of stronger online safeguards for children.
- 0:18Speaker 1: President and St. John's-based dermatologist Dr. Bolu Ogunyemi says as physicians,
- 0:24Speaker 1: they don't wait for harm before they act. He says
- 0:27Speaker 1: children deserve to be able to use technology safely.
- 0:31Speaker 2: The evidence is very clear. Whether we're talking about school
- 0:34Speaker 2: performance to health issues, in particular, mental health, psychiatric disease,
- 0:39Speaker 2: which is increasing in this population, or when we're talking
- 0:42Speaker 2: about inattention, it can show itself as reduced sleep, and importantly,
- 0:46Speaker 2: as rates of sexual exploitation, right? So this has increased
- 0:49Speaker 2: by at least 1,000% over the past decade, decade and
- 0:52Speaker 2: a half. And we know that a lot of these
- 0:54Speaker 2: are associated with the increased time we see our youth
- 0:58Speaker 2: online in a completely unregulated space.
- 1:01Speaker 1: Applications for support programs for low-income households are now being accepted.
- 1:06Speaker 1: Mahalia Artis reports.
- 1:08Speaker 3: The Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation will begin accepting applications
- 1:13Speaker 3: this week for a home repair program as well as
- 1:15Speaker 3: a home modification program. Announced in the budget in May,
- 1:19Speaker 3: the provincial government has doubled the funding available through homeowner
- 1:22Speaker 3: support for low-income households. For home repairs, the income threshold
- 1:26Speaker 3: is around $ 42, 000, $ 65, 000 in Labrador. The waiting time to
- 1:31Speaker 3: reapply has also been reduced from seven years to five.
- 1:34Speaker 3: For home modifications, the threshold is around $ 51, 000, $ 65, 000 in Labrador,
- 1:40Speaker 3: and the other changes include eliminating the need for recommendations

- 2:02Speaker 1: the province who are struggling to get around.
- 2:05Speaker 4: You know, the cost of getting to a medical appointment,
- 2:08Speaker 4: that's number one on the radar here. Like a lot
- 2:11Speaker 4: of them have to travel to pick up groceries. And
- 2:13Speaker 4: even now to the point of visiting family or taking
- 2:16Speaker 4: part in community activities, you know, that they enjoy doing
- 2:21Speaker 4: is even becoming more difficult.
- 2:23Speaker 1: Leonard says the rising cost of living is forcing some
- 2:26Speaker 1: older residents into having to make some difficult choices.
- 2:30Speaker 4: In either buying food, buying their prescriptions. or, you know,
- 2:33Speaker 4: going to their medical appointments. Some are choosing right now
- 2:37Speaker 4: because of the high cost of gas for those with cars,
- 2:40Speaker 4: and even those who have to pay people to take them.
- 2:43Speaker 4: I mean, they have to increase that cost because of
- 2:45Speaker 4: the high cost of gas. And, you know, some are
- 2:48Speaker 4: choosing not to go to their medical appointments because they
- 2:51Speaker 4: simply feel they do not have the funds for that.
- 2:54Speaker 1: The provincial government will announce changes to its medical transportation

- 3:41Speaker 5: makes it, Grail, says that it can detect over 50
- 3:43Speaker 5: different types of cancer. And the way that it does
- 3:45Speaker 5: this is that it looks for small particles and patterns
- 3:47Speaker 5: of DNA associated with cancer in the blood. There's huge
- 3:51Speaker 5: potential here.
- 3:52Speaker 1: Those who lay down their lives in the name of
