- 0:01Speaker 1: And joining us now from San Antonio?
- 0:03Speaker 2: Is the Spurs play by play announcer Dan Weis, who
- 0:05Speaker 2: was there courtside in Oklahoma City when the Spurs beat
- 0:09Speaker 2: the Anti Sonics and took down the defending champion thunder Sir,
- 0:15Speaker 2: I know you're a busy man, and I appreciate you
- 0:17Speaker 2: joining us here on ninety three point three KJR.
- 0:20Speaker 3: Yeah, no problem.
- 0:22Speaker 2: What can you tell us about the spurs arrival here
- 0:26Speaker 2: as they were second seed coming in? Does it seem
- 0:29Speaker 2: a little early? And women Yama is still young? The
- 0:32Speaker 2: supporting cast, they were questions about, okay, women Yama, but
- 0:35Speaker 2: who is Is this taken San Antonio by surprise or
- 0:39Speaker 2: is this season unfolded?
- 0:41Speaker 1: You could see this coming.
- 0:43Speaker 4: No, I definitely didn't see sixty two wins in a
- 0:46Speaker 4: spot in the NBA Finals coming.
- 0:48Speaker 3: I'll be completely honest.
- 0:50Speaker 4: I thought they were maybe being a little bit under
- 0:53Speaker 4: sold at the start of the season, and I think
- 0:55Speaker 4: Victor Wembin Yama, you know, going back to media day
- 0:58Speaker 4: at the end of September, he even kind of set
- 1:01Speaker 4: the tone with his comments and saying that the goal
- 1:03Speaker 4: for this team was to be a playoff team, and
- 1:07Speaker 4: by that definition, in the NBA these days, to be
- 1:10Speaker 4: a playoffs team means you have to be in the
- 1:11Speaker 4: top six because play in is basically in the seven
- 1:16Speaker 4: to ten. So his sites were set on being top
- 1:18Speaker 4: six by getting into the playoffs and not having to
- 1:21Speaker 4: work in through the play in tournament. I felt that
- 1:24Speaker 4: was probably a pretty reasonable expectation. I think in the
- 1:29Speaker 4: last couple of years, the Spurs went back to back
- 1:31Speaker 4: twenty two win seasons and then added, you know, an
- 1:34Speaker 4: additional twelve wins last year, going to thirty four. Victor
- 1:37Speaker 4: missed the final thirty games with a blood cloth that
- 1:39Speaker 4: kept him sidelined. My opinion, I think going into the
- 1:42Speaker 4: start of the season I had them at probably fourteen
- 1:45Speaker 4: more wins in the forty eight to fifty range. Sixty
- 1:48Speaker 4: two in a spot in the NBA Finals was well
- 1:51Speaker 4: beyond my imagination, probably anybody's imagination in this city. And
- 1:55Speaker 4: that's why I think, you know, this trip to the
- 1:58Speaker 4: finals rings maybe a little bit differently than in twenty
- 2:02Speaker 4: fourteen or twenty and thirteen, where you know, you had
- 2:05Speaker 4: veteran ball clubs that I think a lot of people
- 2:09Speaker 4: expected were gonna be there. This one, I think has
- 2:11Speaker 4: kind of come up as a surprise for the community.
- 2:15Speaker 2: What Dan wise, they play by pay announcer for the
- 2:17Speaker 2: San Antonio Spurs, joining us here on the Beacon Plumbing
- 2:19Speaker 2: Hotline at ninety three point three KJRFM.
- 2:22Speaker 1: Dan, what has surprised you?
- 2:23Speaker 3: Then?
- 2:23Speaker 1: Women Yama has been Women Yama.
- 2:25Speaker 2: But of this supporting it Fox has had a very
- 2:28Speaker 2: strong postseason, which you need to have great point.
- 2:31Speaker 1: Guard play to get this far.
- 2:32Speaker 2: But who among the supporting cast has really stepped up
- 2:35Speaker 2: and really been the second or third guys that have
- 2:37Speaker 2: gotten the Spurs here, Well.
- 2:40Speaker 4: There's multiple second or third guys, And I guess that
- 2:43Speaker 4: probably was the defining moment in Game number seven the
- 2:47Speaker 4: other night in Oklahoma City. I mean, I turned to
- 2:49Speaker 4: our TV play by play guy who was there with me,
- 2:52Speaker 4: and I was just watching Shae gil doess Alexander have
- 2:55Speaker 4: a Game seven performance for the Ages, and I said
- 2:58Speaker 4: to him, I said, they don't have enough. They got Shay,
- 3:01Speaker 4: but they got nobody else going right now. Whereas from
- 3:03Speaker 4: a Spurs perspective, sure, Victor Webbinyamo was having a fine
- 3:07Speaker 4: night and his numbers for the game were great twenty
- 3:10Speaker 4: two points. But you look top to bottom across the line.
- 3:13Speaker 4: If you get twenty points from Julian Champenni off six
- 3:16Speaker 4: three pointers. You get you know, sixteen and six from
- 3:19Speaker 4: Stefan Castle. You get another outstanding performance from Daron Fox
- 3:24Speaker 4: playing essentially on one ankle, is dealing with a high
- 3:27Speaker 4: ankle sprain ever since the Minnesota series. In the Western
- 3:30Speaker 4: Conference semifinals, you get Dylan Harper, who in my opinion,
- 3:34Speaker 4: has been the playoff riser for the Spurs, a twenty
- 3:37Speaker 4: year old who's playing with the poise and confidence of
- 3:40Speaker 4: a ten year veteran out there, not afraid to take
- 3:43Speaker 4: the big shot, draining a three in the face of
- 3:46Speaker 4: the two time MVP there in the fourth quarter, Luke
- 3:50Speaker 4: Cornett maybe making the biggest game seven blocks since Lebron
- 3:53Speaker 4: James and Andrea Gudala in the twenty sixteen finals. I mean,
- 3:58Speaker 4: it's just top to bottom, and that's really been the
- 4:01Speaker 4: story of the Spur season. They do it as a collective,
- 4:04Speaker 4: they do it as a whole, and their depth is
- 4:06Speaker 4: the reason why they're in the NBA Finals today.
- 4:09Speaker 5: Dan, you routed off different players that stepped up and
- 4:12Speaker 5: made winning plays at exactly the right time. Which role
- 4:15Speaker 5: player performers do you think will be overlooked nationally, but
- 4:19Speaker 5: is also key for them winning the NBA Finals.
- 4:23Speaker 3: Devin Basell.
- 4:24Speaker 4: Devin Bassell has been the most consistent performer in these
- 4:29Speaker 4: playoffs outside of Victor Winbin Yama.
- 4:32Speaker 3: And when I.
- 4:33Speaker 4: Say consistent, I'm not saying that he's going to go
- 4:35Speaker 4: out there and put up twenty to ten every night.
- 4:38Speaker 3: But he's automatic.
- 4:39Speaker 4: Fourteen points, fifteen points, five rebounds, a blocker two, is
- 4:45Speaker 4: going to knock down a couple of clutch threes over
- 4:47Speaker 4: the course of the game, and he's going to give
- 4:50Speaker 4: you about as good as on ball defense as there
- 4:52Speaker 4: is in the NBA Finals. So, for my money, the
- 4:55Speaker 4: guy who's gonna get overlooked that probably shouldn't, but I
- 4:58Speaker 4: guarantee you will will be Devin the ceut I wasn't.
- 5:01Speaker 5: That was kind of my thought process. Is either going
- 5:04Speaker 5: to be him or maybe I don't even put my
- 5:06Speaker 5: name put the guys I went out there, but I
- 5:07Speaker 5: like that player specifically doing well going to the NBA Finals.
- 5:11Speaker 5: But what stood out to you most about the Spurs
- 5:14Speaker 5: poison one of the I would argue the toughest road
- 5:17Speaker 5: environments in the league.
- 5:21Speaker 3: That's a great question.
- 5:23Speaker 4: It takes guts to go into that building in a
- 5:28Speaker 4: game seven and to thrown the NBA champions the way
- 5:32Speaker 4: that they did, and I just I'm I'm just kind
- 5:37Speaker 4: of floored by how they went out, you know, how
- 5:40Speaker 4: they just treated it like it was any other game.
- 5:43Speaker 4: And when you win sixty two games, when you go
- 5:46Speaker 4: thirty and four since the end of January to close
- 5:49Speaker 4: the regular season, you you kind of get used to
- 5:52Speaker 4: playing a certain brand of basketball. And for that, I
- 5:56Speaker 4: give a lot of credit to Mitch Johnson and the
- 5:58Speaker 4: coaching staff, and that andes Sean Sweety, who was just
- 6:01Speaker 4: named the head coach in Orlando earlier today. Corlis Williamson
- 6:05Speaker 4: joined the staff this year, Mike Noys and Scott King,
- 6:09Speaker 4: who've both been a part of the staff here either
- 6:11Speaker 4: in San Antonio or even in Austin with the G
- 6:13Speaker 4: League for the last couple of years. He's just got
- 6:15Speaker 4: a great group around him that implements a game plan
- 6:20Speaker 4: that has got this team so well prepared for every challenge, obstacle, adversity,
- 6:27Speaker 4: any situation that they're going to face on a given night,
- 6:31Speaker 4: and so by putting the guys in a position to
- 6:33Speaker 4: be successful and then allowing them to utilize their skill
- 6:37Speaker 4: set to be successful to execute the game plan. I
- 6:40Speaker 4: just give a tremendous amount of credit to the coaching staff,
- 6:44Speaker 4: and therefore, you know, that's how you go and you
- 6:48Speaker 4: dethron the champions and they're building in a game seven.
- 6:51Speaker 1: Dan weis to.
- 6:52Speaker 2: Played by play announcer for the San Antonio Spurs, joining
- 6:54Speaker 2: us from Texas on the eve of the Spurs and
- 6:57Speaker 2: the Knicks starting the NBA Finals in San Antonio on
- 6:59Speaker 2: Wednesday night on the Peacon Plumbing isline here in ninety
- 7:01Speaker 2: three point three KJRFM Dan the son of Seattle Mitch Johnson,
- 7:06Speaker 2: your head coach at age thirty nine.
- 7:08Speaker 1: What has he done?
- 7:10Speaker 2: Have you noticed being around that team day to day?
- 7:12Speaker 2: What is Mitch Johnson's influence but personal touch beIN that
- 7:16Speaker 2: has carried this team to the finals. And how much
- 7:18Speaker 2: do you see glimpses of Greg Popovich and the day
- 7:22Speaker 2: to day Mitch Johnson?
- 7:25Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean there's certainly you feel the influence of
- 7:29Speaker 4: coach pop And how can you not. I mean, he's
- 7:30Speaker 4: and he's still very much a part of what's going on.
- 7:34Speaker 4: But Mitch, as you know, just another branch of Pops
- 7:36Speaker 4: coaching tree that is extended far and beyond whether it's
- 7:40Speaker 4: he made Oka in Houston, or whether it's been Mike
- 7:43Speaker 4: Budenholz or Brett Brown or you know, even Mike Brown
- 7:47Speaker 4: was a member of Pop staff way Pop staff way
- 7:50Speaker 4: back in the day too, So it's just another branch.
- 7:53Speaker 4: But Mitch has certainly put his own fingerprints on this
- 7:57Speaker 4: team with his attention to detail, with his intensity, and
- 8:04Speaker 4: with his ability to connect with this group. And I
- 8:08Speaker 4: think as somebody who whose father played in the NBA,
- 8:12Speaker 4: and as somebody who was a point guard himself at Stanford,
- 8:15Speaker 4: those are kind of the leadership qualities that you you
- 8:18Speaker 4: look from a head coach and having been really thrown into,
- 8:23Speaker 4: you know, the fire. I guess last year when when
- 8:25Speaker 4: Pop had to step aside, UH, I think almost maybe
- 8:29Speaker 4: went to the benefit of Mitch, putting him in a
- 8:31Speaker 4: position to be successful, to know what to expect, and
- 8:34Speaker 4: then getting a full off season in a full training camp,
- 8:38Speaker 4: you know, to.
- 8:39Speaker 3: To run the team the way that he wanted to run.
- 8:42Speaker 4: But with the the influence of Coach Pop, and not
- 8:45Speaker 4: only Coach Pop, just the Spurs culture, UH and the
- 8:49Speaker 4: Spurs legacy in the background, I think it's just been
- 8:52Speaker 4: a really winning blueprint. And obviously the success has been
- 8:57Speaker 4: in the results of what the team has gone out
- 8:59Speaker 4: and shown on a nightly basis, But a lot of
- 9:01Speaker 4: credit to Mitch Johnson. He's done a phenomenal job this year.
- 9:04Speaker 2: Mitch Johnson Oday High School class of twenty four to
- 9:07Speaker 2: twenty four, twenty zero zero four, former state champion, two
- 9:11Speaker 2: time state champion here in Washington. He began his coaching
- 9:13Speaker 2: career for the Austin Spurs of the G League, so
- 9:16Speaker 2: he's been in the Spurs organization since twenty sixteen. He's
- 9:19Speaker 2: been on Greg Popovich's staff of the Spurs ins twenty nineteen.
- 9:23Speaker 2: As I understand it, Dan Weiss played by play announcer
- 9:26Speaker 2: for the San Antonio Spurs. As I understand it, Mitch
- 9:29Speaker 2: Johnson has a particularly close relationship with Victor Wembanyama, working
- 9:33Speaker 2: with for years with him on individual drills.
- 9:36Speaker 1: How does a point.
- 9:37Speaker 2: Guard from Seattle get so tight with a seven to
- 9:40Speaker 2: four freak from France?
- 9:43Speaker 1: How is that relationship? Do you? How do you see that?
- 9:47Speaker 3: Yeah? I mean, and it's just not just him.
- 9:49Speaker 4: I mean it's especially some of the guys too that
- 9:52Speaker 4: have been in the Spurs program for a while, like
- 9:54Speaker 4: a Devin bissel Er, Kelda Johnson, who are the two
- 9:56Speaker 4: longest tenured members on the team. But yeah, you know,
- 9:59Speaker 4: I think I think at Victor's skill set right, like
- 10:01Speaker 4: he just he's a unicorn, He's an alien, and he
- 10:04Speaker 4: just does things that we've never seen somebody seven foot
- 10:08Speaker 4: four do with the basketball. With the handle set that
- 10:11Speaker 4: he has the ability to be a point center and
- 10:14Speaker 4: initiate the offense at the point of attack or to
- 10:17Speaker 4: you know, be able to step back and knock down
- 10:18Speaker 4: a thirty foot three pointer. I mean, Mitchell is certainly
- 10:22Speaker 4: not going to be doesn't need to obviously necessarily, you know,
- 10:26Speaker 4: teach him how to play back to the basket or
- 10:28Speaker 4: play inside the band. He can definitely do that. But
- 10:30Speaker 4: I think, you know, yeah, it's great, like you can
- 10:32Speaker 4: use the skills of a point guard with the way
- 10:35Speaker 4: that Victor wants to play with the ball up top
- 10:38Speaker 4: and wants to work with the ball and set up
- 10:40Speaker 4: the offense. It's such a great skill set to have,
- 10:43Speaker 4: and it makes it just so impossible on the defense
- 10:45Speaker 4: to try to defend that because it's virtually impossible from
- 10:49Speaker 4: a one on one standpoint. And then when you get
- 10:51Speaker 4: the help with a double or even triple team, I mean,
- 10:53Speaker 4: you're just it's a pick your poison, right, you're leaving
- 10:56Speaker 4: the shooters open, or you're leaving the other guys in
- 10:58Speaker 4: fox and castle and harder to get downhill and do
- 11:01Speaker 4: what they do. So it's been a great relationship to
- 11:04Speaker 4: watch between mintioned Victor. Frankly it's Mitch and the entire team.
- 11:07Speaker 4: They've really bought into a lot of what he's been preaching.
- 11:10Speaker 5: Staying with Victor here, how has the Spurs culture shaped
- 11:14Speaker 5: his development and how much of this playoff breakthrough reflects
- 11:19Speaker 5: the organization as much as the player.
- 11:25Speaker 4: I think it's been a huge kudos to again, the
- 11:29Speaker 4: coaching staff and the development staff.
- 11:32Speaker 3: You know what a lot of people don't see.
- 11:34Speaker 4: You know, beyond the guys on the front of the
- 11:36Speaker 4: bench as the coaches, is that the NBA teams these
- 11:39Speaker 4: days probably go man almost twenty guys deep when you're
- 11:44Speaker 4: talking about video guys and development guys, and I mean
- 11:47Speaker 4: people who are working with these players on an individual basis.
- 11:51Speaker 4: It used to be, you know, you had three or
- 11:53Speaker 4: four coaches as far as video goes for you know,
- 11:58Speaker 4: scouting reports and whatnot, as far as looking ahead to
- 12:01Speaker 4: your future opponent. Now you have so many individual coaches
- 12:05Speaker 4: that are responsible for individual scouting reports, whether it comes
- 12:09Speaker 4: to players or teams, that these guys behind the scenes
- 12:11Speaker 4: don't get enough credit for the amount of work that
- 12:13Speaker 4: they're putting in when it comes to cutting up video
- 12:16Speaker 4: or cutting up clips and giving you resource and information
- 12:19Speaker 4: as a player, but then on the floor working with
- 12:22Speaker 4: them on a day to day basis.
- 12:25Speaker 3: I mean, most video guys now.
- 12:27Speaker 4: In the NBA are former D two or D one
- 12:32Speaker 4: college players themselves, because they have to be the ones
- 12:35Speaker 4: to go out there and basically simulate what these guys
- 12:38Speaker 4: are going to experience from the opponent on a nightly basis,
- 12:41Speaker 4: and so they need to be up to par to
- 12:44Speaker 4: going out and defending a guy like Victor Webb Binyama,
- 12:47Speaker 4: and you can only get that from having played college
- 12:50Speaker 4: basketball at the highest level or at the second highest level.
- 12:54Speaker 3: So it's a.
- 12:55Speaker 4: Process not just with the Spurs, but I think with
- 12:58Speaker 4: all thirty teams in the NBA right now to be
- 13:00Speaker 4: able to use that development staff to simulate real time
- 13:04Speaker 4: experiences and to get the best out of your team.
- 13:08Speaker 5: Dan, what's the what's the biggest difference between the Victor
- 13:12Speaker 5: you saw when he entered the league and the victor
- 13:16Speaker 5: who just led the Spurs on the road past Oka City,
- 13:20Speaker 5: Okay City, Oklahoma City in Game seven.
- 13:24Speaker 4: He's just a lot more I think he just moves
- 13:27Speaker 4: at the speed of the game right now, a lot
- 13:30Speaker 4: more easily.
- 13:32Speaker 3: I don't think he feels rushed. I don't think he
- 13:35Speaker 3: forces things.
- 13:36Speaker 4: I think he He's gotten just so much more smarter
- 13:41Speaker 4: in terms of his understanding of how the NBA game works,
- 13:44Speaker 4: about how the game is going to be called, and
- 13:47Speaker 4: in that case, then it's about not only what he does,
- 13:50Speaker 4: but how he puts himself in the right spots to
- 13:53Speaker 4: make his teammates around him better. And he specifically cited
- 13:56Speaker 4: that after you know, game number five, after the loss
- 14:00Speaker 4: in Oklahoma City, he said, you know, I gotta do
- 14:02Speaker 4: things to.
- 14:02Speaker 3: To make my might, make my teammates. I wasn't after
- 14:05Speaker 3: game five.
- 14:06Speaker 4: It was actually after Game three he said, I got
- 14:09Speaker 4: to do things to make my teammates better, and I'm
- 14:11Speaker 4: not doing enough of that. And so he recognizes that
- 14:16Speaker 4: that it's not just about what he does when he
- 14:19Speaker 4: has the basketball, but about it's about what he does
- 14:21Speaker 4: when he doesn't have the basketball as well too, because
- 14:24Speaker 4: he will then recognize how teams are playing him, and
- 14:28Speaker 4: therefore he's putting himself in positions that he's going to
- 14:31Speaker 4: get the best out of his teammates, and that that
- 14:35Speaker 4: definitely doesn't come when you're a you know, a nineteen
- 14:37Speaker 4: year old rookie in your first year in the NBA.
- 14:40Speaker 4: It takes some season. And I know, you know, the
- 14:42Speaker 4: Spurs obviously have been on this meteoric rise here to
- 14:45Speaker 4: getting to the NBA Finals, but even it took Victor
- 14:47Speaker 4: a couple of years just to understand how the NBA
- 14:49Speaker 4: game is played, how it's called, you know, how how
- 14:53Speaker 4: you have to physically, you know, deal with different different
- 14:58Speaker 4: coverages and different defense and what different coaches.
- 15:01Speaker 3: Are throwing at you.
- 15:02Speaker 4: So it's been an education and if Victor was here,
- 15:06Speaker 4: he'd probably tell you the education continues on a daily basis.
- 15:10Speaker 2: Dan Wise, play by play man for the San Antonio Spurs,
- 15:13Speaker 2: joining us from Texas here on the Beacon Plumbing Hotline
- 15:15Speaker 2: before the Spurs and Knicks begin Game one of the
- 15:17Speaker 2: NBA Finals on Wednesday, I got to ask you, Dan,
- 15:20Speaker 2: there's a lot of Mitch Johnson fans here in Seattle
- 15:22Speaker 2: O'Day grads that are following his rise to the NBA Finals,
- 15:26Speaker 2: and we saw the T shirt he was wearing in
- 15:29Speaker 2: the locker room holding the Western Conference trophy on Saturday
- 15:31Speaker 2: night in Oklahoma City, Jimmy Hendricks wearing a Sonics jersey
- 15:36Speaker 2: of his dad from the nineteen seventy nine championship team.
- 15:40Speaker 1: Does it come up regularly?
- 15:41Speaker 2: Does Mitch Johnson talk about his Seattle background on the
- 15:44Speaker 2: beat there with the Spurs or do you notice a
- 15:46Speaker 2: Seattle influence and does he how much does he bring
- 15:49Speaker 2: that back?
- 15:50Speaker 3: A lot, A lot? I mean, he does get the
- 15:52Speaker 3: occasional question.
- 15:54Speaker 4: He is as a proponent of Seattle basketball and Washington
- 15:59Speaker 4: Ice School basketball as there is out there on the circuit.
- 16:04Speaker 4: He is a clearly a huge proponent of the NBA
- 16:07Speaker 4: returning to Seattle at some point in the future, which
- 16:10Speaker 4: does look promising here from you know, reading all the
- 16:12Speaker 4: tea leaves of what's going on. But yeah, I can
- 16:16Speaker 4: I can guarantee you that there is nobody out there
- 16:19Speaker 4: that leeds green and gold right now than Mitch Jobbs
- 16:22Speaker 4: on the NBA beat. He is, he's he's got that
- 16:26Speaker 4: Seattle blood pumping through his veins, and I can guarantee
- 16:30Speaker 4: you know he's going to be very excited to make
- 16:33Speaker 4: that first trip back to Seattle when the when the
- 16:35Speaker 4: Sonics do eventually.
- 16:36Speaker 2: Return, Dan, we have a lot of people listening, younger
- 16:39Speaker 2: people who are interested in breaking into radio play by play.
- 16:42Speaker 2: And I noticed you were raised in New England, the
- 16:45Speaker 2: Boston area and of course now in Texas. Can you
- 16:48Speaker 2: tell a little bit about your story and how you
- 16:49Speaker 2: became an NBA play by play guy in the NBA Finals.
- 16:54Speaker 4: Yeah, and it's you know, I guess no path is
- 16:57Speaker 4: linear and everybody kind of goes a different way.
- 17:00Speaker 3: But I actually got started in hockey, believe it or not.
- 17:04Speaker 4: I was working in minor league hockey for twenty plus
- 17:07Speaker 4: years and you know, kind of bouncing around from from
- 17:10Speaker 4: different minor leagues and really my you know, my first
- 17:14Speaker 4: big break actually was, even though it was still hockey related,
- 17:18Speaker 4: I got hired by the Phoenix Suns, who were operating
- 17:20Speaker 4: a minor league hockey team back in two thousand and five.
- 17:24Speaker 4: But being a part of just the Sun's organization, it
- 17:27Speaker 4: kind of opened my eyes to, you know, how how
- 17:31Speaker 4: different organizations work. And I was fortunate to meet some
- 17:34Speaker 4: great people at the Sons organization that when the opportunity
- 17:39Speaker 4: with the American Hockey League team in San Antonio opened
- 17:42Speaker 4: up that was run by the Spurs at the time.
- 17:46Speaker 4: The people in Phoenix were great and you know, getting
- 17:49Speaker 4: me off to San Antonio and you know, accelerating my career.
- 17:54Speaker 4: And then while the you know, Rampage was a great
- 17:58Speaker 4: experience for me at the time. You know, as I
- 18:02Speaker 4: think anybody can tell you, in any job, it's about
- 18:06Speaker 4: luck and it's about timing. And the opportunity to move
- 18:09Speaker 4: over to Spurs Television opened up back in twenty eighteen,
- 18:14Speaker 4: to move from you know, my role as to play
- 18:17Speaker 4: by play guy for the San Antonio Rampage to go
- 18:19Speaker 4: work as the pre and post game host and sideline
- 18:22Speaker 4: reporter for Spurs Television.
- 18:24Speaker 3: And so it was again a fortunate opportunity. I was
- 18:27Speaker 3: very lucky, just happened to be right place at the
- 18:29Speaker 3: right time.
- 18:30Speaker 4: And then last year, our longtime radio broadcaster decided to
- 18:34Speaker 4: hang it up after a twenty plus year career, and
- 18:37Speaker 4: they came to me and said, you we'd be honored
- 18:39Speaker 4: if you would take his spot. And you know, I
- 18:42Speaker 4: was honored and blessed to have that chance to have
- 18:44Speaker 4: that opportunity and here we are, so like I said, no,
- 18:48Speaker 4: no path is the same everyone kind of goes through
- 18:50Speaker 4: different roles and different cities and different places to get there.
- 18:55Speaker 3: But you know, it's more about enjoying the journey than
- 18:59Speaker 3: you know, trying.
- 19:00Speaker 4: To I guess, get yourself to one spot quicker than
- 19:04Speaker 4: the next spot. So that's what I would tell your
- 19:06Speaker 4: listeners out there, is that just enjoy the journey. It's
- 19:09Speaker 4: pretty sweet though, when you do get to the top
- 19:11Speaker 4: of the mountain.
- 19:12Speaker 1: Congratulations to you, sir.
- 19:13Speaker 2: That's a lot a lot of years of late nights
- 19:16Speaker 2: and early airport and early wake up calls.
- 19:18Speaker 1: I know.
- 19:19Speaker 2: Congratulations that enjoy this ride. You're welcome, sir. Thanks for
- 19:23Speaker 2: coming on. Enjoy this ride. We'll be watching and listening.
- 19:26Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 19:28Speaker 2: Dan Weiss, the play by play man for the radio
- 19:30Speaker 2: San Antonio Spurs, joining us from San Antonio two days
- 19:34Speaker 2: before he calls the game one of the NBA Finals
- 19:37Speaker 2: in San Antonio between the Spurs and the Knicks.
- 19:40Speaker 1: That's an interesting career path. Twenty years in minor league hockey.
- 19:44Speaker 1: That's a long time with a lot of bus rides,
- 19:46Speaker 1: as he and I'll tell you it's a long time.
- 19:49Speaker 1: That's a long.
- 19:50Speaker 2: Time to get to where he is, the pinnacle of
- 19:52Speaker 2: his profession and sport the NBA Finals, calling that for
- 19:56Speaker 2: the Spurs live on radio. There's a great if you
- 19:59Speaker 2: go to his Twitter x handle which is at dan
- 20:02Speaker 2: Weiss wei SSPBP for play at play Dan Weis's PBP.
- 20:08Speaker 2: There's a really cool video that The Sun the Spurs
- 20:11Speaker 2: shot of him calling the very end of Game seven
- 20:15Speaker 2: of the Western Conference Finals in Oklahoma City and his
- 20:17Speaker 2: excitement and portraying that to the fans back in San
- 20:21Speaker 2: Antonio for their Spurs making it to the NBA Finals, coached,
- 20:24Speaker 2: of course by Mitch Johnson, the two thousand and four
- 20:26Speaker 2: graduate of.
- 20:27Speaker 1: Odai High School.
- 20:28Speaker 2: Spencer Hawes was on the Chuck and Bucks Show this
- 20:30Speaker 2: morning talking about his buddy Mitch Johnson. He was in
- 20:33Speaker 2: Oklahoma City rooting on the Spurs, wearing a cowboy hat.
- 20:37Speaker 2: Spencer Hawes said, and we'll be there, I assume, in
- 20:40Speaker 2: San Antonio for the NBA Finals, which begins Wednesday about
- 20:44Speaker 2: six o'clock our time. Nick's at Spurs. The Spurs have
- 20:47Speaker 2: the home court for that NBA Finals series best of seven.
- 20:52Speaker 2: Big news of the day twofold the Rams are acquiring
- 20:56Speaker 2: Miles Garrett, the two time Defensive Player of the Year
- 21:00Speaker 2: from the Cleveland Browns for Jared Verse, a first round pick,
- 21:03Speaker 2: and a bunch of other stuff, the Hollywood Sign, the
- 21:06Speaker 2: four or five Freeway, the Santa monicappeer, and then ten
- 21:09Speaker 2: minutes after that, Emily Kaplin of ESPN breaking that one
- 21:13Speaker 2: roof Sports and Entertainment, the Kraken and Samantha Halloway are
- 21:16Speaker 2: adding Melinda French Gates as an investor with an eye
- 21:20Speaker 2: of course toward the Sonics and their return. That one
- 21:24Speaker 2: Sports and Entertainment will make a bid for the Sonics.
- 21:26Speaker 2: Samantha Hallway has been very open about that to be
- 21:29Speaker 2: playing in her arena, Climate Pledge Arena, and now Melinda
- 21:33Speaker 2: French Gates is on board on that team as an
- 21:36Speaker 2: investor in one roof Sports and the Kraken and presumably
- 21:39Speaker 2: soon here the Sonics four nine, four to five one.
- 21:42Speaker 2: That Tacomadad's text sign. You've been buzzing about that all morning.
- 21:45Speaker 2: We'll read back your text next. On ninety three point
- 21:47Speaker 2: three KJRFMO, we welcome back to the Greg Belt Show
- 21:58Speaker 2: with Christopher Kidd Live on ninety three point three KJRFM.
- 22:01Speaker 1: Happy June to you. All kinds of stuff happening today.
- 22:05Speaker 2: Haven't even gotten too much talking about the Seahawks getting
- 22:08Speaker 2: two third round picks. Because Nolan Teasley is now the
- 22:10Speaker 2: new general manager of the Minnesota Vikings. The Rooney Rule
- 22:16Speaker 2: minority hiring of executives and head coaches means the Seahawks
- 22:20Speaker 2: get a third round pick next year, a third round
- 22:22Speaker 2: pick in twenty twenty eight.
- 22:23Speaker 1: Seahawks now have.
- 22:24Speaker 2: Twelve picks in next year's draft, which John Schneider, general manager,
- 22:28Speaker 2: has said is much stronger and deeper than this year's
- 22:32Speaker 2: and they are no doubts stocking up. They get four
- 22:34Speaker 2: comp picks for losing free agents and then one for
- 22:39Speaker 2: losing Nolan Tinsley four nine, four to five one. It's
- 22:42Speaker 2: to come it Out's tech sign. You know what the
- 22:43Speaker 2: music means. It's time for you to be a part
- 22:45Speaker 2: of the show. And a lots to react to on
- 22:47Speaker 2: a Monday.
- 22:48Speaker 5: From the four two five are rooted for the Spurs
- 22:51Speaker 5: Saturday night like they were a Seattle team.
- 22:53Speaker 1: What a game? Yeah? I think he wasn't alone or
- 22:57Speaker 1: she wasn't alone enough. Probably not.
- 22:59Speaker 5: I think ninety eight percent of Seattle lights were cheering
- 23:04Speaker 5: on the Spurs if they were indeed watching or listening
- 23:06Speaker 5: to said game.
- 23:07Speaker 2: Eric from the four two five asked a really interesting question, Hey, Greg,
- 23:11Speaker 2: do you think it's possible that the Rams and Browns
- 23:13Speaker 2: have known this trade was gonna happen and that's why
- 23:16Speaker 2: the Rams took Ty Simpson with their first round pick.
- 23:20Speaker 2: Kind of makes you go hmm. Things that make you
- 23:22Speaker 2: go hmm. Remember that song from way back. I do
- 23:26Speaker 2: think that's possible. Trade this large doesn't just happen overnight,
- 23:29Speaker 2: and I don't know if it if they knew back
- 23:32Speaker 2: in April that they could get Miles Garrett.
- 23:36Speaker 1: The flip side of that is, if you know you're
- 23:38Speaker 1: gonna lose.
- 23:38Speaker 2: A first round pick or more in trading for Miles Garrett,
- 23:42Speaker 2: maybe make that first round pick this year really impactful.
- 23:45Speaker 1: Yeah, that's not the layaway quarterback. Yeah you want.
- 23:48Speaker 5: Usually when you draft the guy in the first round,
- 23:49Speaker 5: he is playing exactly at playing. I'm not saying he
- 23:53Speaker 5: needs to be elite, although depending on where your players drafted,
- 23:56Speaker 5: there's discussion that needs to be had. But at the
- 23:59Speaker 5: same time, you're expecting this kid to come in and
- 24:01Speaker 5: play some football that's not happening.
- 24:03Speaker 2: Two things can be true at once. The Rams are
- 24:05Speaker 2: going for it and the Rams screwed up by taking
- 24:07Speaker 2: Ty Simpson, and they said, you know what, how can
- 24:10Speaker 2: we fix the screw up. Let's trade for Miles Garrett.
- 24:12Speaker 2: That'll shit anybody up this season.
- 24:14Speaker 1: The two five three.
- 24:15Speaker 2: Says the Seahawks should counter the Garrett trade by improving
- 24:18Speaker 2: their offensive line, tight ends, and blocking backs.
- 24:20Speaker 5: I don't know if the tight ends need much improvement.
- 24:22Speaker 5: I'll be honest, AJ Barner and what's the other gentleman's name,
- 24:25Speaker 5: Osbert those that's a great duel right there. I don't
- 24:29Speaker 5: know who you could bring in that would be better,
- 24:31Speaker 5: but that duel right there.
- 24:33Speaker 1: And don't forget Elijah Royo, who didn't play much much.
- 24:36Speaker 1: He's gonna get more.
- 24:36Speaker 5: I think they got arguably a top three, top five
- 24:39Speaker 5: unit in the league. Maybe I have to go do
- 24:41Speaker 5: and look at some other ross.
- 24:42Speaker 1: Oh Okay, I was wrong, but I think they think
- 24:44Speaker 1: that too. Yeah.
- 24:45Speaker 5: I'm not too sure they should go out and make
- 24:47Speaker 5: a trade for any tight ends, but you can definitely
- 24:50Speaker 5: get better at another areas.
- 24:51Speaker 1: I'd imagine the.
- 24:52Speaker 2: Two fight threes has also improved their quick passing game,
- 24:54Speaker 2: and that is part of why Brian Fleury is here.
- 24:57Speaker 2: To get a quick passing game that the forty nine
- 25:00Speaker 2: ers and Rams somewhat do too. Hidden in the success
- 25:04Speaker 2: the Ram the Seahawks passing game had last year, all
- 25:07Speaker 2: the downfield throws was they wasn't the times they were
- 25:10Speaker 2: lacking in the short, quick pass game. And that's something
- 25:14Speaker 2: that maybe when they play the Rams they need to
- 25:16Speaker 2: do a little more of nothing on the bar.
- 25:18Speaker 1: And click passing. That's going to be huge.
- 25:20Speaker 2: But having said all of that, you know, we talked,
- 25:22Speaker 2: we alluded to this, you know, Mike McDonald's like, okay,
- 25:25Speaker 2: so what yeah, bring it on, bring it on.
- 25:28Speaker 5: We do not care exactly from the four two five
- 25:31Speaker 5: I was talking about where you mentioned the Sonics returning
- 25:36Speaker 5: and it's going to be a while before the Sonics
- 25:39Speaker 5: are in the playoffs and even get an opportunity for
- 25:41Speaker 5: a championship. And I said, be looking out for that
- 25:45Speaker 5: sixteen seventeen year old, fifteen year old that's hooping doing
- 25:48Speaker 5: their thing. And from the four towo five, it's going
- 25:51Speaker 5: to be Jamal Crawford's son.
- 25:53Speaker 3: That's it.
- 25:54Speaker 1: Yeah, that would be really cool. He's a eighth grader, freshman, he.
- 25:57Speaker 5: Was a freshman last year, who was a sophomore this year.
- 26:00Speaker 5: Each yeah, and he was he was a State Championship champion.
- 26:03Speaker 5: He had a really good season the Rams for the
- 26:07Speaker 5: two six. The Rams are going to be so bad
- 26:09Speaker 5: after this year, maybe, like we'll see how it all
- 26:13Speaker 5: plays out, maybe two years.
- 26:15Speaker 2: There are a couple texts asking this question, is it
- 26:19Speaker 2: possibly a prelude to not only bid for the Sonics,
- 26:22Speaker 2: but getting Allen on board as well for a bid
- 26:25Speaker 2: for the Seahawks. One roof Sports and Entertainment Samantha Halloway
- 26:29Speaker 2: Melinda French Gates owning the Crack and Sonics and the Seahawks.
- 26:34Speaker 1: It's interesting to bring that up.
- 26:36Speaker 2: The NFL used to have a rule predictable preventing cross
- 26:40Speaker 2: ownership of NFL team owners couldn't own other franchises in
- 26:44Speaker 2: major sports leagues that operated in NFL markets. That was
- 26:48Speaker 2: a cross ownership rule that they had until about six
- 26:51Speaker 2: seventy eight years. It is a late twenty ten I
- 26:54Speaker 2: think it was on twenty eighteen or so that the
- 26:57Speaker 2: NFL scrapped that rule and now owners I mean Dan
- 27:00Speaker 2: Cronkie of the Rams owner owns the Denver Nuggets, the
- 27:05Speaker 2: Colorado Avalanche, the MLS team in Colorado. He's even in
- 27:09Speaker 2: on the Premier Premier League champion Arsenal that just played
- 27:12Speaker 2: in the Champions League Finals.
- 27:14Speaker 1: Stan Cronki's in all of that.
- 27:16Speaker 2: Josh Harris, the Commander, Washington, Commander's owner that just paid
- 27:19Speaker 2: six billion dollars to set an NFL record for a
- 27:22Speaker 2: sale that the Seahawks sales probably gonna eclipse. Josh Harris
- 27:28Speaker 2: is also the owner of the Philadelphia seventy six Ers,
- 27:30Speaker 2: the New Jersey Devils. He's got a stake in Crystal
- 27:33Speaker 2: Palace in the Premier League, so that has gone away.
- 27:37Speaker 2: There's less of a precedent of owners owning multiple sports
- 27:43Speaker 2: in the same market. All of what I'm talking about.
- 27:45Speaker 2: Robert Craft doesn't, except Robert Craft technically owns the New
- 27:48Speaker 2: England Revolution of MLS that plays in the same stadium
- 27:51Speaker 2: that the Patriots do. The Arthur Blank, the owner of
- 27:55Speaker 2: the Atlanta Falcons, owns the Atlanta women's professional soccer team.
- 28:00Speaker 1: So there are exceptions to that.
- 28:02Speaker 2: But to have three sports and ones that would be different,
- 28:04Speaker 2: that would probably test the NFL's willingness for teams to
- 28:08Speaker 2: have owners of multiple sports inside the same market.
- 28:11Speaker 1: But it's not.
- 28:12Speaker 2: The rules have loosened on that, is my point. So
- 28:14Speaker 2: good questions on that, because that is now in play.
- 28:17Speaker 5: Last two from me. This one is first. One is
- 28:19Speaker 5: from Marcus out of the two to six. I hated
- 28:22Speaker 5: Mitch as a player in high school because they were
- 28:24Speaker 5: unbeatable unless you.
- 28:25Speaker 1: Were Seattle Prep.
- 28:26Speaker 5: But I went to a few parties with them and
- 28:28Speaker 5: he was a good guy, so I'm happy for him.
- 28:31Speaker 5: And this is from Jason now the two o six.
- 28:34Speaker 5: I'm curious if Mitch Johnson jumped Ship to coach the
- 28:37Speaker 5: Sonics when they do return.
- 28:39Speaker 2: Ah maybe some of that Melinda French Gates money can
- 28:44Speaker 2: be used to lure Mitch Johnson, NBA champion coach of
- 28:47Speaker 2: the Spurs to Seattle MM to be.
- 28:50Speaker 1: The coach of the Sonics. All interesting, That's an interesting one.
- 28:54Speaker 2: A few people are put drawing the connecting the dots
- 28:58Speaker 2: to having the Seahawks now trade.
- 28:59Speaker 1: For Jared Verse. That would be a haul.
- 29:04Speaker 2: If you're the Browns and you just gave up Miles
- 29:06Speaker 2: Garrett and then you're gonna trade Jared Verse. Two, you
- 29:10Speaker 2: better get you talk about herschel Walker trade. You better
- 29:13Speaker 2: get an entire draft of this. The Seahawks have twelve
- 29:16Speaker 2: picks in next year's draft. As I said, it would
- 29:17Speaker 2: probably take eight or nine of them at this point,
- 29:20Speaker 2: now that the Browns have traded Miles Garrett to trade
- 29:23Speaker 2: a pass rusher Jared Versu in his prime, I'm not
- 29:26Speaker 2: sure the Browns. I'm not sure they would do that.
- 29:30Speaker 2: I don't even know what the Seahawks would. There's a
- 29:33Speaker 2: reason why John Schneider has twelve picks in next year's draft.
- 29:36Speaker 1: Put it that way.
- 29:36Speaker 2: He's not about to give away half the draft class
- 29:38Speaker 2: to get Jared Verse. I would not think, but it's
- 29:41Speaker 2: interesting to think about. For sure, forty fives pick a
- 29:49Speaker 2: back negatively affects two players, positive impact on the.
- 29:52Speaker 1: Bullpen, as in not having to use them in games
- 29:54Speaker 1: to win.
- 29:55Speaker 2: Six man rotation negatively impacts all starters and all relievers.
- 29:59Speaker 1: The Mariners have stretch now of sixteen games and seventeen days.
- 30:02Speaker 2: Coming up, putting a road trip through three cities on
- 30:05Speaker 2: the East Coast, and that is when it appears they're
- 30:08Speaker 2: going to go to a six man rotation instead of
- 30:10Speaker 2: this piggybacking, and that would give Bryce Miller and Castillo
- 30:15Speaker 2: actual starts instead of the sharing stuff. But to the
- 30:18Speaker 2: Texter's point, that now disrupts all the four other starters
- 30:22Speaker 2: and their normal routines and instead of pitching on every
- 30:24Speaker 2: fifth day, they're going to be pitching on every sixth day.
- 30:29Speaker 1: Sounds like a good problem to have as long as
- 30:31Speaker 1: it's working. Huh.
- 30:32Speaker 2: The ra right now of Bryce Miller and Luis Castillo
- 30:36Speaker 2: when they piggyback through three turns of this is one
- 30:38Speaker 2: point five to seven. You're gonna win a lot of
- 30:41Speaker 2: games when you're starting pitching is one point five to seven.
- 30:45Speaker 2: And that's why it's working. Yes, it's ticking them off.
- 30:47Speaker 2: Yes the communication was bungled, but the results through three iterations,
- 30:54Speaker 2: the results speak for themselves. In those three wins, the
- 30:57Speaker 2: Mariners have not used the bullpen one time.
- 30:59Speaker 1: They have not used reliever in any of those games.
- 31:01Speaker 1: Twenty seven innings pitch between those three guys. Excuse me,
- 31:05Speaker 1: it was one inning in the White.
- 31:06Speaker 2: Sox game in one of the piggyback games they went
- 31:09Speaker 2: to Ferrara before they brought in Castier, who ended at
- 31:13Speaker 2: my air on that. But in over three games, by
- 31:15Speaker 2: and large, they have given their bullpen three nights off
- 31:19Speaker 2: and they've got three.
- 31:20Speaker 1: Wins to show for it that success.
- 31:23Speaker 2: Mariners are two and a half games up heading into
- 31:24Speaker 2: their series opener tonight against the New York Mets six
- 31:28Speaker 2: point forty first pitch. Emerson Hancock is on the mound
- 31:31Speaker 2: trying to increase the Mariners winning streak to seven games.
- 31:33Speaker 2: If you missed the biggest news of the day, twofold
- 31:36Speaker 2: Miles Garrett traded from the Cleveland Browns to the Los
- 31:39Speaker 2: Angeles Rams, the Seahawks chief impediment to getting back to
- 31:42Speaker 2: the Super Bowl. And Melinda French Gates joining the ownership
- 31:46Speaker 2: group of One Sports Roof and Entertainment who also owned
- 31:49Speaker 2: the Kraken, who are also going to make a bid
- 31:51Speaker 2: on the Sonics. So you can connect those dots pretty easily,
- 31:54Speaker 2: that Melinda French Gates, one of the richest people in
- 31:56Speaker 2: the world, that just threw herself behind the bid for
- 31:59Speaker 2: the Sonics to come back to Seattle in a couple
- 32:02Speaker 2: of years. The NBA to vote on that later this year.
- 32:05Speaker 2: And Fornas is lurking outside. He has been in touch
- 32:08Speaker 2: with Emily Kaplan. We tried to get in touch with
- 32:10Speaker 2: Emily Kaplin, the ESPN reporter that broke the news on
- 32:13Speaker 2: Melinda French Gates joining the Samantha Holloway group. Ian's gonna
- 32:16Speaker 2: have Emily Kaplan on the show, beturing the twelve and
- 32:19Speaker 2: three o'clock because she couldn't come on with us before twelve,
- 32:21Speaker 2: so she will be on KJRI air talking about this
- 32:24Speaker 2: story of Melinda French Gates owning joining the Samantha Hollis
- 32:28Speaker 2: Halloway one sports Ruth and whatever one sports roof and
- 32:34Speaker 2: Entertainment is what I'm trying to say. And Fornessa's outside
- 32:37Speaker 2: to joining me talk about that. Next to ninety three
- 32:39Speaker 2: point three KJRFM. We welcome back to the Greg Mell
- 32:54Speaker 2: Show with Christopher Kidt live here on ninety three point
- 32:56Speaker 2: three KJFM.
- 32:57Speaker 1: My very newsy Monday, June.
- 32:59Speaker 2: First, Yea, and for Nest joining us, you think he
- 33:03Speaker 2: was privy to what the breaking news was Kraken Headquarters
- 33:07Speaker 2: today when roof Sports and Entertainment, you talk about a
- 33:11Speaker 2: whale adding a whale of an investor in al Linda
- 33:15Speaker 2: French Gates, and we immediately drew the dot, connected the
- 33:20Speaker 2: dots and drew the line to the sonics coming and
- 33:22Speaker 2: she being a primary backer of that effort.
- 33:25Speaker 1: I think you're accurate.
- 33:27Speaker 6: I think you're accurate, and I think it's I mean,
- 33:32Speaker 6: just the optics of it. There's so manuch involved. Gates
- 33:36Speaker 6: A Gates name right, which for how long has every
- 33:41Speaker 6: time there's been a team for sale in any league?
- 33:44Speaker 6: And you know, deep down, if you're a if you're
- 33:46Speaker 6: a league, you want that name associated with probably with
- 33:50Speaker 6: your league, including the Seahawks, including the Seahawks. And yet
- 33:55Speaker 6: you know, the closest things we ever had was Paul Allen, right,
- 33:57Speaker 6: which is great, and Embalmer right with the Clippers, but
- 34:02Speaker 6: never anybody with the name Gates. And so when that
- 34:05Speaker 6: name gets mentioned, I think there's probably people in the
- 34:09Speaker 6: NFL offices, in the MLB office is gone man, the NHL,
- 34:14Speaker 6: and probably the NBA are going to get not Bill,
- 34:16Speaker 6: which Bill has never shown any interest in sports, which
- 34:19Speaker 6: is fine. Melinda French Gates is looking at it from
- 34:22Speaker 6: a standpoint. There's so much involved obviously, and being partnered
- 34:25Speaker 6: up with Samantha Halloway. I mean, the optics of this
- 34:28Speaker 6: greg are pretty overwhelming, are they not? If you're sitting
- 34:31Speaker 6: in the headquarters of the NBA offices right now, and
- 34:35Speaker 6: if you're Gary Bettman, how much are you smiling right now?
- 34:37Speaker 2: And curious that this is the first team she's ever
- 34:40Speaker 2: Melinda French Gates has ever invested in. Yeah, she's never
- 34:43Speaker 2: owned no sports team. No, no, she calls herself a
- 34:46Speaker 2: sports fan but has never invested in an ownership group.
- 34:48Speaker 6: Well, and you know, it just sounds like from everything
- 34:51Speaker 6: they needed to have, it needed to be the right
- 34:54Speaker 6: move or the right situation, and I think partnering with
- 34:58Speaker 6: Samantha Hallway is exactly that. And what you know, what
- 35:02Speaker 6: one roof stands for and what Samantha stands for and
- 35:05Speaker 6: all those things, and it just it just makes a
- 35:07Speaker 6: ton of sense. And you know you mentioned it earlier.
- 35:10Speaker 6: They basically owned the building and the primary tenant and
- 35:14Speaker 6: now probably a second a second tenant which will be
- 35:16Speaker 6: you know, also a primary tenant coming up in a
- 35:20Speaker 6: couple of years. And it's a good day. It offsets
- 35:22Speaker 6: the other news, which may not be as good if
- 35:25Speaker 6: you're a cl sports fan.
- 35:26Speaker 2: Today, well, people are asking on the text line, how
- 35:29Speaker 2: are the Rams able to afford? Everyone's asking cry Miles Garrett. Here,
- 35:32Speaker 2: I'll tell you how. The next three years, Miles Garrett's
- 35:35Speaker 2: base salaries are one point three million dollars, one point
- 35:38Speaker 2: nine million dollars, just above veteran and then it jumps
- 35:41Speaker 2: to thirty million. So the Rams by twenty twenty eight
- 35:45Speaker 2: will renegotiate that deal before the thirty million, and they'll
- 35:49Speaker 2: gladly take the one point nine as a base salary
- 35:52Speaker 2: the next three seasons because the Browns have to eat
- 35:56Speaker 2: the salary cap acceleration for trading him. They also redid
- 36:01Speaker 2: their Browns this spring. What made this trade happen was
- 36:04Speaker 2: the Browns pushed back bonuses that were supposed to be
- 36:07Speaker 2: do in March, moved them to the summer, to the
- 36:10Speaker 2: end of training camp, which means that is also now
- 36:14Speaker 2: off the table. The Rams didn't have to pay bonuses
- 36:17Speaker 2: that would have already come due in March, so now
- 36:21Speaker 2: if they wanted to, they could renegotiate those bonuses now
- 36:24Speaker 2: that they have him as a Barles Garrett as a
- 36:26Speaker 2: player on the round.
- 36:27Speaker 6: Do you think this also indicates that they may not
- 36:30Speaker 6: be in the market to re sign Pooka. Well, maybe
- 36:35Speaker 6: it's just a proven year for Puka, just like hey, like,
- 36:38Speaker 6: are you on the straight and narrow now and.
- 36:40Speaker 1: What have you?
- 36:41Speaker 6: Could be because that's a risky signing if he goes
- 36:44Speaker 6: sideways again.
- 36:44Speaker 2: Right right now, there are people in LA that cover
- 36:47Speaker 2: the Rams that tell me that's still on the table,
- 36:49Speaker 2: that he's going to get his massive new deal and
- 36:51Speaker 2: it might exclipse and it's.
- 36:53Speaker 1: Post jass End.
- 36:55Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 36:55Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean it's a talent you don't want to
- 36:57Speaker 6: waste and let go away, right, I mean I get
- 36:59Speaker 6: that part of it, But yeah.
- 37:01Speaker 1: I'm just I'm curious.
- 37:02Speaker 6: I'm just looking at the Jared Verse, defensive rookie of
- 37:04Speaker 6: the Year two years ago, right, pro bowler each of
- 37:08Speaker 6: his two seasons, right, Like they He's not Miles Garrett.
- 37:14Speaker 1: You and I both know that. But he's not thirty
- 37:16Speaker 1: one years old either, right, he's.
- 37:17Speaker 6: In his third year in the league, right, and he
- 37:19Speaker 6: has been a dominant I mean, if you're a Seahawks fan,
- 37:22Speaker 6: tell me you haven't noticed this son of a gun
- 37:24Speaker 6: every game. He is a dominant problem on the defensive line. So, yeah,
- 37:29Speaker 6: they get Miles Garrett significant deletion off their roster as well,
- 37:33Speaker 6: Like I like, I know, it was like point, Wow,
- 37:35Speaker 6: they've just won the Super Bowl. I know what I've
- 37:37Speaker 6: been saying that. Well, a big reason they got as
- 37:41Speaker 6: close as did the last two years was Jared Verse. Yes,
- 37:43Speaker 6: younger and healthier, A large part part of the Seahawks
- 37:47Speaker 6: game plans. Offensive game plans, every Ram Seahawks game is
- 37:50Speaker 6: about Jared Verse. Yes, they are the Seahawks coaches don't
- 37:55Speaker 6: mind him leaving. We talked about this with on draft
- 37:59Speaker 6: day on the first round, you and I did, and
- 38:02Speaker 6: and Corbin and everyone were all kind of gathered around
- 38:05Speaker 6: and when when they took Ty Simpson and Ruben Bain
- 38:07Speaker 6: Junior was sitting there and we all we all said
- 38:09Speaker 6: the same thing, My god, they could have paired Rubin
- 38:11Speaker 6: Bain Junior with Jared Vers and Fisk and like, oh
- 38:13Speaker 6: my god, nope. So, I mean, I'm not quite ready
- 38:18Speaker 6: to engrave the Lombardi Trophy with their names just yet.
- 38:20Speaker 2: The other thing is, will Matthew Stafford play an entire
- 38:23Speaker 2: season injury free again at age thirty eight?
- 38:25Speaker 1: Yeah? That he did last year? That he did last year, Right,
- 38:28Speaker 1: it's a bad back.
- 38:28Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean, it's I mean, just what it does
- 38:31Speaker 6: tell you this. We all knew the NFC West was
- 38:34Speaker 6: the best division in football because the forty nine ers
- 38:36Speaker 6: are getting healthy again as well, and they may add
- 38:39Speaker 6: the other Bosa.
- 38:40Speaker 2: Yeah, how about the duck juxtaposition within the NFC West.
- 38:44Speaker 2: The Rams just went out and got the NFL Defensive
- 38:48Speaker 2: Player of the Year, while the Cardinals are in a
- 38:50Speaker 2: fight with Jacoby Brissett over a contract.
- 38:53Speaker 1: Yes, yes, that's happening.
- 38:57Speaker 6: At the same time, Jacoby Brissette thinks he has some
- 39:00Speaker 6: it'll leverage. Wasn't he winless last year as a starter?
- 39:03Speaker 6: Has he played forty two teams? I'm pretty sure he
- 39:05Speaker 6: was winless or maybe had one win. They've got Gardner
- 39:08Speaker 6: Minshew there as a bridge guy. Anyway, Jacoby, I'm gonna
- 39:12Speaker 6: hay Tips, you have no leverage whatsoever.
- 39:16Speaker 2: I would you like to be a Cardinals fan in
- 39:17Speaker 2: hearing this news what we we're fighting over, Jacobe Brissette
- 39:21Speaker 2: while the Rams are getting Miles Garrett stupid?
- 39:24Speaker 6: I mean, come on right and and everyone's getting I
- 39:27Speaker 6: mean and I mean I always go back McDuffie and Watson.
- 39:29Speaker 6: You added two starting corners, yes to your state head
- 39:33Speaker 6: which they had to fix that. So they already fixed that.
- 39:35Speaker 6: They add Miles Garrett, you lose Jared Verse. You're right
- 39:37Speaker 6: with Stafford? Can he stay healthy? Yes, I'm for Seattle's sake,
- 39:43Speaker 6: I'm glad they don't see these guys till the end
- 39:44Speaker 6: of the year. In all seriousness, yeah, because like you
- 39:47Speaker 6: don't want to see Stafford early when he's healthy, That's right,
- 39:49Speaker 6: we'll see him later on and we'll see how Miles
- 39:51Speaker 6: Garrett does as well.
- 39:52Speaker 2: So crazy day, you know Mike mcdonald'say, we do not care,
- 39:55Speaker 2: We do not care, throw not around, we didn't care.
- 39:58Speaker 1: What do you got today? Kaplin?
- 40:01Speaker 6: We're not sure if we got her yet. We're we're
- 40:02Speaker 6: working on that. We're also we're checking in on Chris
- 40:06Speaker 6: Daniel to join us. Right at the top of the show,
- 40:08Speaker 6: we'll talk NBA because I kind of I think the
- 40:09Speaker 6: big thing I want to get with Chris back with
- 40:11Speaker 6: Chris Daniels. What's the whole process where we at in
- 40:13Speaker 6: the process. Chris done a great job with covering this
- 40:15Speaker 6: for Como, so well we'll go through this with the
- 40:18Speaker 6: NBA on this the anniversary, Big Anniversary seventy nine.
- 40:21Speaker 1: We'll do that.
- 40:21Speaker 6: We've got a molli wap. We even get to this
- 40:24Speaker 6: great the marriage one six and al Hey, hey, now,
- 40:28Speaker 6: what is the molliwop going to be when they are
- 40:30Speaker 6: winning six in a row. It's going to be it's
- 40:32Speaker 6: going to be a big chance turning the brand on
- 40:34Speaker 6: its head, very awkward covers. It's not going to be good.
- 40:37Speaker 1: Can you smile?
- 40:38Speaker 6: No, they'll find something, well, Chris, maybe not. Nathan will
- 40:43Speaker 6: he'll find something to be pissed off about. We'll do
- 40:45Speaker 6: that at one o'clock today. So yeah, no, no rest
- 40:48Speaker 6: for the weary here on June Nurse.
- 40:50Speaker 1: Let's go man.
- 40:50Speaker 2: We were rolling already and we'll pick up the baton
- 40:53Speaker 2: with Anderson Hrs.
- 40:54Speaker 1: Next.
- 40:55Speaker 2: Greg Bell, Christopher Kid, thanks for listening on other news
- 40:57Speaker 2: we can break tomorrow. We'll work on that on ninety
- 40:59Speaker 2: three point three k j R F M
