- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your home for
- 0:06Speaker 1: deer hunting news, stories and strategies, and now your host,
- 0:11Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast. I'm
- 0:16Speaker 1: your host, Mark Kenyan in this episode number two and
- 0:19Speaker 1: thirty eight, and we are back with our weekly radio
- 0:23Speaker 1: mini series in which we're hearing from hunters from all
- 0:25Speaker 1: across the country about the current deer activity, behavior, rep
- 0:30Speaker 1: progress sign and the tactics that are actually helping people.
- 0:34Speaker 1: Right now, real quick, before we get this one started, though,
- 0:49Speaker 1: a couple announcements I want to share with you. Number One,
- 0:53Speaker 1: as most of you probably know from hearing past podcasts,
- 0:56Speaker 1: I and Wired Hunt have become involved with Steve ronnello
- 1:00Speaker 1: new company, Meat Eater, Inc. A lot of exciting things
- 1:03Speaker 1: going on there. If you heard our podcast, I think
- 1:05Speaker 1: it was to fifteen, Steve was on, I explained exactly
- 1:09Speaker 1: what's happening. I also posted a video on YouTube explaining
- 1:12Speaker 1: in more detail why I decided to do this, what
- 1:15Speaker 1: that means, where and how my content is going to
- 1:17Speaker 1: live into the future. Make sure check out the wire
- 1:20Speaker 1: hunt YouTube channel to see that. But tied into that
- 1:23Speaker 1: is the fact that the new season of the Meat
- 1:26Speaker 1: Eater TV show just premiered on October two on Netflix
- 1:30Speaker 1: as a Netflix original, which is a which is a
- 1:32Speaker 1: really big deal. This is the first hunting show ever
- 1:35Speaker 1: to be a Netflix original, So I'm excited about that.
- 1:38Speaker 1: The whole team is excited about that. And if you
- 1:40Speaker 1: heard last fall about my caribou hunt that I went
- 1:44Speaker 1: on with Steve, that hunt is now on Netflix. It's
- 1:48Speaker 1: two episodes. I just watched them last night, and Wow,
- 1:53Speaker 1: Steve and the production team did an incredible job of
- 1:57Speaker 1: of telling that story in what I think was just
- 2:00Speaker 1: a really beautiful, moving, powerful way. I mean it was,
- 2:04Speaker 1: it was super cool. Maybe I'm biased because I actually
- 2:06Speaker 1: was on the trip, but man, I was excited to
- 2:09Speaker 1: see that. I think you guys will enjoy it too,
- 2:11Speaker 1: especially if you heard me, you know, share the story
- 2:13Speaker 1: of that experience in the podcast. Actually getting to see
- 2:16Speaker 1: that now with your eyes, I think that might be
- 2:19Speaker 1: pretty neat for you, So be sure to check it out.
- 2:21Speaker 1: It's on Netflix now, the whole new season, sixteen new episodes,
- 2:25Speaker 1: and uh, like I said, I've only seen two episodes
- 2:27Speaker 1: so far, but they're great. I'm sure the rest are
- 2:29Speaker 1: gonna be a lot of fun too, So go on
- 2:31Speaker 1: over Netflix. Give those a watch. We would certainly appreciate that. Now.
- 2:35Speaker 1: The other announcement is that our partners over at first
- 2:38Speaker 1: let are running a sale on a bunch of their
- 2:40Speaker 1: white tail gear. And if you're listening to this on
- 2:43Speaker 1: the day of this podcast drops, this is October three,
- 2:46Speaker 1: two eighteen. That sale is going on today, but today
- 2:49Speaker 1: is the last day it's on, and you get up
- 2:52Speaker 1: to thirty off a bunch of their white tail essential pieces,
- 2:56Speaker 1: stuff like uh, their hybrid saw too vest, stuff like
- 3:01Speaker 1: their Catalyst pants that I've been wearing, um, a bunch
- 3:04Speaker 1: of neat products. Check it out. If you've been wanting
- 3:06Speaker 1: to try first Light, this sales, great opportunity to do it.
- 3:08Speaker 1: Today is the last day though, October three is the
- 3:11Speaker 1: last day, so head on over to first light dot
- 3:14Speaker 1: com to try some of that gear out, and that
- 3:17Speaker 1: we'll do it for these couple of announcements. Onto the show.
- 3:21Speaker 1: All right, welcome to the Wire to Hunt podcast, brought
- 3:25Speaker 1: to you by Onyx, and we're here again for another
- 3:28Speaker 1: episode of the RUT Radio mini series that my good
- 3:33Speaker 1: buddy and producer Spencer new Heart is running the show on. Spencer,
- 3:37Speaker 1: thank you for carrying more of the burden even than
- 3:41Speaker 1: usual over the last couple of weeks, as I've been
- 3:43Speaker 1: glomping all over the nation in the back of my truck,
- 3:46Speaker 1: I finally have a microphone. Yeah, that's all right. Very
- 3:50Speaker 1: jealous of the troops you were on. But now it's
- 3:53Speaker 1: gonna be flipped around. I'm gonna be hunting all the
- 3:56Speaker 1: time and you're gonna be the guy sitting at a computer. Yeah,
- 4:00Speaker 1: it's time for you to cash in your wife vacation days. Right,
- 4:02Speaker 1: that's right, that's right. They have been accumulating. That's good.
- 4:05Speaker 1: That's good man. I uh, I'm excited because you know,
- 4:09Speaker 1: my white tail season started at the beginning September in
- 4:12Speaker 1: Montana and North Dakota, but it doesn't really feel like
- 4:16Speaker 1: it's officially started until the at home season is kicked off,
- 4:20Speaker 1: and that that happened yesterday. It's it's now really hunting
- 4:24Speaker 1: season because Michigan hunters are out there. So my my
- 4:29Speaker 1: excitement levels at at all time high now, and the
- 4:32Speaker 1: RUT radio episodes then for me even get more interesting
- 4:35Speaker 1: because I need that up to date intel too, So
- 4:38Speaker 1: I'm excited for this one. Yeah, Michigan as well as
- 4:42Speaker 1: much of the Midwest and much of the South just
- 4:45Speaker 1: opened either yesterday or this weekend. So, uh, a lot
- 4:49Speaker 1: of this stuff is becoming more relevant to the rest
- 4:52Speaker 1: of the nation. Yeah. So, as we do on every
- 4:55Speaker 1: RUT Radio episode, you've been collecting updates from folks all
- 4:59Speaker 1: across the country. Three, Who are we going to hear
- 5:01Speaker 1: from today? And where are these folks at? We start
- 5:04Speaker 1: off in Nebraska with Bryce Lamley from Sitky Gear, and
- 5:07Speaker 1: then in Pennsylvania from Flat Lion, White Tails is Tyler Kravitz.
- 5:11Speaker 1: And then we talked to Gray Drummond from Florida Outdoor
- 5:13Speaker 1: Experience in Florida, and then in Kentucky from Dream Chaser's
- 5:17Speaker 1: Hunt is Colton Clemens. Awesome. Now, from people you've spoke
- 5:21Speaker 1: to so far, is there anything you're picking up as
- 5:24Speaker 1: far as a trend or anything that you've just been
- 5:26Speaker 1: hearing with your other conversations. Yes, So this kind of
- 5:29Speaker 1: goes back to last week and brings in this week
- 5:32Speaker 1: as well as some reports that have had on RUT Fresh.
- 5:35Speaker 1: But it sounds like across the country that signmaking is
- 5:39Speaker 1: kind of a head of schedule. As you and I
- 5:42Speaker 1: record this mark it's October two, and this would typically
- 5:45Speaker 1: be the time I think for most guys that you
- 5:47Speaker 1: would just start to see some scrapes or rubs show up. UM,
- 5:52Speaker 1: maybe not even yet where things would get really hot
- 5:55Speaker 1: a few weeks from now. But like I said, UM,
- 5:57Speaker 1: from the reports I've been hearing, there's been a lot
- 5:59Speaker 1: more signmaking that has shown up in the woods a
- 6:04Speaker 1: result of that. UM, I'm not totally sure. Some of
- 6:07Speaker 1: the people I talked to UH got hammered with E
- 6:10Speaker 1: h D like five or six years ago, and so
- 6:14Speaker 1: maybe the age classes now to a to a point
- 6:18Speaker 1: where there's a lot more bucks around, mature bucks that
- 6:22Speaker 1: are doing some rubmaking or excuse me, some scrapes, whereas
- 6:26Speaker 1: that something that you maybe would have noticed over this
- 6:28Speaker 1: last half decade or so. Another reason could be that
- 6:31Speaker 1: a lot of the country, UM has had precipitation over
- 6:34Speaker 1: this last month or so. And I'm not sure that
- 6:37Speaker 1: it's ever been proven or verified by any biologists or
- 6:41Speaker 1: anything like that, but a lot of hunters I tend
- 6:43Speaker 1: to think that there's a correlation between the ground being
- 6:47Speaker 1: soft and scrapes showing up, and so with a lot
- 6:50Speaker 1: of the country having precipitation in September, that could be
- 6:54Speaker 1: another cause as well as UH, the increase in signmaking
- 6:58Speaker 1: for this early in the season m very interesting. I
- 7:02Speaker 1: don't know if I've heard that theory before. I had
- 7:05Speaker 1: heard that, you know, oftentimes a buck will want to
- 7:08Speaker 1: go freshen up a scrape after a rain, but I
- 7:12Speaker 1: hadn't heard that maybe that increased precipitation just leads to
- 7:15Speaker 1: more scrape production in general. So, UM, I'm intrigued. Spencer Newharth,
- 7:20Speaker 1: I am intrigued. Um. I can't say that I've seen
- 7:23Speaker 1: that yet this year myself, or the last week I did,
- 7:26Speaker 1: Like I mentioned, you know, Michigan season kicked off, and
- 7:30Speaker 1: I did see a few light rubs when I was
- 7:34Speaker 1: heading out to my stand last night, so it was
- 7:35Speaker 1: a little bit of that. Um, I haven't seen any
- 7:38Speaker 1: scrapes made, but I do have a cell phone camera
- 7:42Speaker 1: pointing on a like a scrape tree that I put
- 7:44Speaker 1: out in the middle of a food plot, and I've
- 7:46Speaker 1: had a good number of deer hitting that, not necessarily
- 7:48Speaker 1: scraping it up yet but smelling the liking branch. Um.
- 7:52Speaker 1: So I think there'll be plenty more to come here soon.
- 7:55Speaker 1: But that's interesting to hear that folks are seeing that too.
- 7:57Speaker 1: So is that something that you've manipulated and added some
- 8:01Speaker 1: sense or anything, or you just have the camera waiting
- 8:04Speaker 1: on that tree for a deer to open it up themselves.
- 8:07Speaker 1: So we usually what I do when I did in
- 8:09Speaker 1: this case was I went out there, I placed the
- 8:12Speaker 1: tree where I wanted in a licking branch at the
- 8:14Speaker 1: right height where I wanted it, and then I kicked
- 8:16Speaker 1: up some dirt underneath it. Um. And in the past,
- 8:19Speaker 1: I've put scent on the ground, or I started up
- 8:21Speaker 1: sitting the ground, I put scent on the licking branch.
- 8:24Speaker 1: This year, I didn't do that, but I do always
- 8:26Speaker 1: pee in the scrape, leave a little bit of a
- 8:28Speaker 1: human urine, which eventually just smells like ammonia, which dear
- 8:31Speaker 1: just kind of pick up is urine. Um. So lots
- 8:34Speaker 1: of times i've I've read and I've used it myself.
- 8:37Speaker 1: It works just fine. Just use your own non or
- 8:40Speaker 1: totally natural scent. So that's what I did in this case. Um,
- 8:45Speaker 1: that's the scent I've used. But I did last night
- 8:48Speaker 1: when I left my tree stand. Um, I was picked
- 8:51Speaker 1: up on a TV and I brought a little rake
- 8:52Speaker 1: out and I didn't rake up the scrape and just
- 8:55Speaker 1: had it kind of opened up a little bit more
- 8:57Speaker 1: so it looks like it's been freshened up recently by
- 8:59Speaker 1: an aggressive deer, and I'm hoping that's going to trigger
- 9:01Speaker 1: even more activity at that location. Well, I have a
- 9:05Speaker 1: blog post that was posted on August twenty nine and
- 9:09Speaker 1: refresh I think you should go check out, as well
- 9:10Speaker 1: as some others, and it talked about why you should
- 9:12Speaker 1: start using mock scrapes earlier in the season. And I
- 9:16Speaker 1: referenced this study that this guy did from Deer and
- 9:19Speaker 1: Deer Hunting magazine back in late eighties and early nineties,
- 9:22Speaker 1: and basically he had this um penned deer population and
- 9:27Speaker 1: over four years, he would have control years where he
- 9:29Speaker 1: made no scrapes, and then he would have the scrape
- 9:31Speaker 1: years where he created the scrapes um and during those
- 9:35Speaker 1: scrape years, he would uh witness like dozens and dozens
- 9:40Speaker 1: of scrapes that were worked and visited by bucks. By
- 9:45Speaker 1: September twenty six, I think the one year it was
- 9:47Speaker 1: like thirty something that scrapes had shown up in the
- 9:50Speaker 1: woods when he started those scrapes in early September. Uh.
- 9:53Speaker 1: And then the years where he did not create any scrapes,
- 9:56Speaker 1: he would only witness like one or two at the
- 9:59Speaker 1: end of September. So by starting those scrapes early, it
- 10:04Speaker 1: seems like you can actually kind of disrupt the social
- 10:07Speaker 1: behavior in the woods with those bucks, and they'll start
- 10:10Speaker 1: visiting those scrapes as well. Now that might not necessarily
- 10:13Speaker 1: help you kill a deer or even get them moving
- 10:16Speaker 1: in daylight better, but if you're someone who likes scrapes
- 10:18Speaker 1: for the purpose of inventory or learning where these deer traveling, Uh,
- 10:24Speaker 1: that's something that can be really crucial that you can
- 10:26Speaker 1: use in September that maybe other hunters aren't doing. Oh man,
- 10:29Speaker 1: I a percent agree that is my number one most
- 10:32Speaker 1: important trail camera tactic Now. I I even put my
- 10:36Speaker 1: cameras mostly on scrapes or historical pass scrapes or new
- 10:40Speaker 1: mox scrapes that I create. I start that even in
- 10:43Speaker 1: late August, Like if I'm in a spot where I
- 10:45Speaker 1: can't put out mineral or bait or anything like that
- 10:48Speaker 1: to get trail camera pictures in the summer, I was
- 10:51Speaker 1: just put looking put these cameras on licking branches, and
- 10:53Speaker 1: I still get bucks coming and checking those. And then
- 10:56Speaker 1: definitely one September hits almost all my cameras are on
- 10:59Speaker 1: either a real scrape or mock scrape tree in a field,
- 11:03Speaker 1: UM or pulling down a licking branch in the woods.
- 11:06Speaker 1: There's no better way to get consistent pictures that I've found, um,
- 11:10Speaker 1: assuming you don't want to put corner bait or something
- 11:12Speaker 1: out there that of course gets a lot dear to
- 11:14Speaker 1: one location, but otherwise licking branches and scrapes of the
- 11:17Speaker 1: way to go. So I'm on board for sure. Well,
- 11:20Speaker 1: I think we'll have plenty of more sign mace signmaking
- 11:23Speaker 1: talk over this next month of radio. But for now,
- 11:26Speaker 1: let's get to the October third episode. Let's do it.
- 11:30Speaker 1: Before we get to our first update, let's pause for
- 11:32Speaker 1: a word from our sponsors at white Tail Properties. This week,
- 11:36Speaker 1: with white Tail Properties, we are joined by Andrew Schultz,
- 11:39Speaker 1: a land specialist out of Illinois. And Andrew is going
- 11:42Speaker 1: to be telling us about what to look for when
- 11:44Speaker 1: buying a piece of ground with intentions of putting in
- 11:46Speaker 1: a small pond. Yeah, it's really attainable, and there's a
- 11:51Speaker 1: lot of people that look to do that when they're
- 11:53Speaker 1: searching for a piece of ground or the right piece
- 11:55Speaker 1: of ground, And a large part of that is what
- 11:58Speaker 1: are you intending to use the pond for I mean,
- 12:00Speaker 1: is this pond gonna be something that you can fish
- 12:03Speaker 1: with your kids or grandkids, um, when you come out
- 12:06Speaker 1: to visit the property, or is this pond gonna be
- 12:09Speaker 1: the pond that your dream home overlooks when you're building
- 12:12Speaker 1: on this property. So first identifying what it is that
- 12:16Speaker 1: you're putting the pond in for um. So once you've
- 12:19Speaker 1: done that, location is everything. Obviously, if the pond serves
- 12:23Speaker 1: a purpose for wildlife, you want it in the best
- 12:26Speaker 1: location to do so, where soil is also going to
- 12:29Speaker 1: be relevant. Depth is going to be relevant. Drainage is
- 12:33Speaker 1: another thing that's relevant. So UM, once you've determined that
- 12:38Speaker 1: a property is the right one for you, you know
- 12:40Speaker 1: you've got lots of options as it relates to put
- 12:42Speaker 1: it in a pond. Um, just do your homework ahead
- 12:45Speaker 1: of time and figuring out what you want to use
- 12:47Speaker 1: it for. Um you know, the best purpose and then
- 12:51Speaker 1: how to go about achieving your goals. If you'd like
- 12:54Speaker 1: to learn more and to see the properties that Andrew
- 12:57Speaker 1: currently has listed for sale, visit white tail properties dot com.
- 13:01Speaker 1: Backslash Schultz that's s h U l t z are
- 13:07Speaker 1: in joining us on the line. First is Bryce Lamley,
- 13:10Speaker 1: an outdoor writer out of Nebraska. Now, Bryce in Nebraska,
- 13:13Speaker 1: what would you say the buck activity has been lately
- 13:15Speaker 1: on a scale of one to tent Well, I'm usually
- 13:19Speaker 1: really conservative for you, but I'm actually going to say
- 13:21Speaker 1: a nine right now. In thirty eight years of serious
- 13:25Speaker 1: bow hunting, this is the most early season scraping I've
- 13:29Speaker 1: ever seen. And I think it might be a combination
- 13:32Speaker 1: of being wetter than normal and and we've got a
- 13:35Speaker 1: little bit of a strange age class on some of
- 13:38Speaker 1: the properties I hunt. But it's uh, it's been this
- 13:42Speaker 1: multiple big scrapes opened up, and lots of them. Now
- 13:47Speaker 1: I don't hunt that far away from you in South Dakota,
- 13:50Speaker 1: you're in Nebraska. Typically I'm hard to seeing any scrapes
- 13:53Speaker 1: at all this time of year. Are you seeing a
- 13:55Speaker 1: lot of scrapes or just a small number pop up
- 13:59Speaker 1: which is more than normal even Well, I'll give you
- 14:02Speaker 1: an example. Last year October nine, I killed a nice
- 14:06Speaker 1: buck and over a scrape. But I walked in with
- 14:09Speaker 1: some cent on my boots and I opened that scrape
- 14:12Speaker 1: up that night it had not been hit. So that
- 14:13Speaker 1: was October ninth last year. This year, starting around September
- 14:19Speaker 1: twentieth or so, these scrapes are beginning opened up and
- 14:22Speaker 1: beat up, and multiple visits, mostly at night. But it's
- 14:27Speaker 1: it's honestly, the scrape scenes on some of the properties
- 14:30Speaker 1: of the two main properties that I hunt. It's just
- 14:33Speaker 1: it's crazy. I've never seen anything like it. We'll speaking
- 14:37Speaker 1: of killing an ice buck. You just did that. I
- 14:39Speaker 1: believe it was last night. It was a great dear
- 14:41Speaker 1: you got and tell us a little bit about that hunt. Well.
- 14:45Speaker 1: I was in kind of a pin north of a
- 14:49Speaker 1: small creek and just south of a dyke levy bordering
- 14:53Speaker 1: a bean field, and and it was kind of one
- 14:55Speaker 1: of those almost perfectly wrong winds where it was gonna
- 14:59Speaker 1: be difficult for dear to get down wind of me
- 15:02Speaker 1: if they wanted to visit these scrapes, and kind of
- 15:05Speaker 1: a staging area before they hit the beans. They've not
- 15:07Speaker 1: been as much in the beans lately since the beans
- 15:09Speaker 1: are starting to turn brown, but I still thought I
- 15:12Speaker 1: might have a chance in this book. Was actually he
- 15:15Speaker 1: actually got out into the beans um pair or off
- 15:18Speaker 1: the side of me. I didn't see him get into
- 15:20Speaker 1: the beans, but then he was walking down the androws
- 15:22Speaker 1: about thirty yards away, which is a little far from
- 15:24Speaker 1: my longboat, and just for grins, I thought, I've got
- 15:28Speaker 1: nothing else better to do, and it was a little
- 15:30Speaker 1: bit windy, so I hit him with a snort snort
- 15:32Speaker 1: wheels with my mouth, and he immediately started scraping out
- 15:36Speaker 1: in the bean field, and he looked back hard twice,
- 15:40Speaker 1: and I hit him again when we started walking, and
- 15:43Speaker 1: he trotted away out of my vision down the androws,
- 15:46Speaker 1: and I thought the last the end of that now.
- 15:48Speaker 1: He ended up coming back up over the dike into
- 15:51Speaker 1: the little strip of woods I was in and tried
- 15:53Speaker 1: to circle down window me and next time I saw
- 15:56Speaker 1: him he was ten yards away, and that was down
- 15:59Speaker 1: in us great Ordinarily, would you be trying to call
- 16:03Speaker 1: a buck in this early or is it all that
- 16:05Speaker 1: sign that you've seen in the woods that inspired you
- 16:08Speaker 1: to snore weeze in that dear No. In fact, I
- 16:11Speaker 1: don't even have my rattle bag or carrying my rattling
- 16:15Speaker 1: homes or anything like that right now, because it's like
- 16:18Speaker 1: you said, it's usually too early for me to even
- 16:20Speaker 1: be thinking about that. I do see a lot of times,
- 16:24Speaker 1: a lot of scrape activity starting to open up around
- 16:28Speaker 1: October four to October tennis seems like for me most years,
- 16:32Speaker 1: So this is really really early. And and yeah, I
- 16:36Speaker 1: just I think I had nothing to lose, and by
- 16:39Speaker 1: reason at this guy, and I was just kind of
- 16:42Speaker 1: dumbfounded by how he responded. Last season, you had mentioned
- 16:47Speaker 1: that a theme was kind of all the water. Um,
- 16:50Speaker 1: not only that kind of delaying harvest and doing some
- 16:53Speaker 1: other things, but also just changing the deer movement in general,
- 16:56Speaker 1: and you had to kind of pattern them differently. Is
- 16:58Speaker 1: that something you're still dealing with dealing with It's a
- 17:03Speaker 1: different kind of water situation where it's actually been more
- 17:06Speaker 1: consistently wet instead of the big, heavy, almost flood like waters.
- 17:12Speaker 1: And so this year, um, we just the ground has
- 17:15Speaker 1: been wet a lot, and I think that's been more
- 17:17Speaker 1: conducive to scraping. I don't think it's had much of
- 17:20Speaker 1: as an effect on the deer movement like it did
- 17:23Speaker 1: last year. Um, it has kept the farmers out of
- 17:26Speaker 1: the fields. I think they would already be well into
- 17:28Speaker 1: the bean harvest right now, and there's there's they're cutting
- 17:31Speaker 1: some beans and I've even heard of a cornfield coming out.
- 17:34Speaker 1: But it's not I mean that the farmers are kind
- 17:37Speaker 1: of handicap. Right, A lot of states across the Midwest
- 17:40Speaker 1: are just opening for the first time here earlier this
- 17:43Speaker 1: week or this coming week for those people who are
- 17:47Speaker 1: just getting to stand for the first time. Uh, you know,
- 17:49Speaker 1: explained to us price what your favorite setup is this
- 17:51Speaker 1: time of year. I am still even though in the
- 17:55Speaker 1: Braska starts September one, I would say between September one
- 17:59Speaker 1: and oberfter so or October tans I'm not getting down
- 18:04Speaker 1: into the woods very much at all. I'm hunting the
- 18:07Speaker 1: edge or maybe some staging areas just outside the egg
- 18:11Speaker 1: fields um, looking for easy entry, easy exit, trying to
- 18:16Speaker 1: learn what's going on and and still give myself a
- 18:19Speaker 1: chance without buggering up the inside of the woods too much.
- 18:24Speaker 1: Going forward, Then, in the sixth week or so, what
- 18:26Speaker 1: do you think that buck activity is going to be
- 18:28Speaker 1: on a scale of one to ten in Nebraska. I'm
- 18:31Speaker 1: gonna hope for it to still be a nine. And
- 18:34Speaker 1: the reason I I'm saying I'm hoping it will be
- 18:36Speaker 1: that way is we've got a really weird weather week
- 18:40Speaker 1: looking wrapping up this coming or coming up this week.
- 18:43Speaker 1: It's just I mean it's supposed be ninety tomorrow and
- 18:46Speaker 1: then drop back down into the fifties and sixties and
- 18:49Speaker 1: be wet six of the next seven days, and so
- 18:52Speaker 1: it's it's just gonna be really unsettled, it looks like,
- 18:54Speaker 1: but I think maybe a nine. Congrats on the great
- 18:57Speaker 1: white tail Bryce, thanks for joining me, appreciate it. Thank you,
- 19:00Speaker 1: Spencer alright and joining us on the line. Next is
- 19:03Speaker 1: Tyler Kravitz in Pennsylvania from Flat Line White Tails now
- 19:07Speaker 1: Tyler in Pennsylvania. What would you say the bucket activity
- 19:10Speaker 1: has been lately on a scale of one to ten, um,
- 19:13Speaker 1: I would say personally, as far as the activity for myself,
- 19:17Speaker 1: I would say right around seven to eight. I mean,
- 19:19Speaker 1: every time I've been out so far, I've definitely seen
- 19:22Speaker 1: various bucks for sure. Um, So I would say it's
- 19:26Speaker 1: definitely it's definitely pretty good this year so far. For
- 19:29Speaker 1: most hunters this time of years, it can be an
- 19:32Speaker 1: awkward transition of food sources. Is that something you're seeing
- 19:35Speaker 1: right now in Pennsylvania that you're having a lot of
- 19:37Speaker 1: natural brows available and losing some of those big egg fields.
- 19:42Speaker 1: You know? Something for this year that I've noticed is uh,
- 19:45Speaker 1: more than any years in past. Um A lot of
- 19:48Speaker 1: the bucks that we're hunting, um I think are feeding
- 19:51Speaker 1: in this corn field and working their way out of
- 19:53Speaker 1: these corn field because there's a lack of aggs this
- 19:56Speaker 1: year is in surrounding areas. So with that being said,
- 19:59Speaker 1: hunting it trains istionary coming out. It's kind of perfect.
- 20:01Speaker 1: I haven't seen a lot of them switching their summer
- 20:04Speaker 1: patterns yet, so everything is kind of going how we
- 20:06Speaker 1: wanted to as far as right now. How about it
- 20:08Speaker 1: for some of those natural food sources, are you finding
- 20:11Speaker 1: that this year has a solid acorn crop or not?
- 20:14Speaker 1: I would say personally in our surrounding areas, UM, as
- 20:17Speaker 1: far as the acorns go, this year, all of the
- 20:19Speaker 1: oak stains I know of the red oaks, there's definitely
- 20:23Speaker 1: a decent amount of red oaks, but not as many
- 20:25Speaker 1: as years in the past. That the problem that we
- 20:28Speaker 1: run into is we have hundreds and hundreds of acres
- 20:30Speaker 1: of state ground around us that is all solid oak trees.
- 20:34Speaker 1: So you know, in order to hunt these deer and
- 20:36Speaker 1: be able to hone in in acorns, it's tough unless
- 20:39Speaker 1: you can find a producing white oak, in which I
- 20:41Speaker 1: do not know where any are this year that are
- 20:43Speaker 1: producing that are white oaks. You mentioned maybe doing a
- 20:46Speaker 1: morning set up focusing on that corn field. What would
- 20:49Speaker 1: a morning set up look like for you trying to
- 20:51Speaker 1: get one of these hit list bucks? Typically, what I'm
- 20:55Speaker 1: gonna try to do when I when I get into
- 20:56Speaker 1: this in the morning. Uh, you know, when these deer
- 20:59Speaker 1: feeding in this corn yields a lot of times they're
- 21:01Speaker 1: gonna leave your food source before daylight. So with that
- 21:04Speaker 1: being said, what you want to do is you want
- 21:06Speaker 1: to get into a transition area halfway between food to
- 21:09Speaker 1: cover and a lot of this time. A lot of
- 21:12Speaker 1: these times, what you can do is you can catch
- 21:14Speaker 1: them in daylight coming back into the betting area without
- 21:16Speaker 1: having to get into the bedding area. Disturbance and less
- 21:18Speaker 1: need be. Are you seeing much for signmaking at this point? Actually?
- 21:24Speaker 1: You know, lately I have started noticing a lot of
- 21:26Speaker 1: scrapes and stuff like that. So they're definitely hitting a
- 21:28Speaker 1: lot of scrapes around field edges and whatnot. Um as
- 21:31Speaker 1: far as our cameras are showing us too, they're starting
- 21:33Speaker 1: to hit scrapes as well. So I would say, yeah,
- 21:36Speaker 1: I'm seeing a lot of sun. Are there any weather
- 21:38Speaker 1: patterns coming up in these next few weeks that get
- 21:40Speaker 1: you excited now that all of Pennsylvania is open for
- 21:44Speaker 1: deer hunting. As far as for the next week's whether
- 21:48Speaker 1: on my phone would it shown me it looks like
- 21:51Speaker 1: it's actually gonna get warmer, So unfortunately, I feel as
- 21:53Speaker 1: if that's not gonna be too good. But as far
- 21:56Speaker 1: as tonight's looking, it looks like we're pretty good. We
- 21:57Speaker 1: got some rain coming in stuff like that, so it
- 21:59Speaker 1: should overcastye, as far as the evening hut goes, they
- 22:02Speaker 1: should move a little bit earlier this evening. On that note,
- 22:06Speaker 1: then what do you think that bucket activity is going
- 22:07Speaker 1: to be in Pennsylvania on a scale of one to
- 22:09Speaker 1: ten over this next week? I would say, if you're
- 22:13Speaker 1: hunting unpressured white tails, you know where they're where, they're
- 22:15Speaker 1: not getting a lot of the crowd of other people
- 22:17Speaker 1: and whatnot. Um, it might not change a whole lot,
- 22:20Speaker 1: but I would say at the tail end of this week,
- 22:22Speaker 1: then gears are definitely gonna start switching. I would say
- 22:24Speaker 1: to your activity this week would be right around the
- 22:27Speaker 1: five as far as good movement. Al right, Tyler, good
- 22:30Speaker 1: luck to you and the other guys a flat line
- 22:32Speaker 1: white tails. Look forward to seeing what you come up
- 22:34Speaker 1: with this fall. Thanks for joining me already. Thank you
- 22:39Speaker 1: alright and joining me on the line. Next is Colton
- 22:41Speaker 1: Clemens from Dream Chaser's Hunt in Kentucky. Now, Colton in Kentucky,
- 22:45Speaker 1: what would you say the bucket activity has been lately
- 22:47Speaker 1: on a scale of one to ten right now here? Lightly,
- 22:52Speaker 1: it's probably been um anywhere between a six and a seven.
- 22:57Speaker 1: Akrons are really really falling uh here lately. And the deer.
- 23:03Speaker 1: We had a big cod front both both through last
- 23:05Speaker 1: weekend and I had a lot of deer show up,
- 23:08Speaker 1: a lot of daylight activity, and they were hitting acrons
- 23:11Speaker 1: pretty hard here recently you mentioned the large amount of acorns.
- 23:15Speaker 1: How does that compare two years past? This year has
- 23:18Speaker 1: been quite a bit more than normal. We had a
- 23:21Speaker 1: lot of rain early in the spring and I think
- 23:24Speaker 1: that really really bumped them. And it's just been they
- 23:28Speaker 1: were falling from the trees Saturday and Sunday it sounded
- 23:32Speaker 1: like it was raining. You guys in Kentucky, you've been
- 23:36Speaker 1: hunting for over a month now, so how have your
- 23:38Speaker 1: setups changed from maybe mid September until now early October?
- 23:44Speaker 1: UM meds early in September to mid September. We're pretty
- 23:48Speaker 1: much sitting on food sources being filled. And in Kentucky
- 23:52Speaker 1: it's legal debate, so a lot of people hunt over
- 23:54Speaker 1: corn piles. Um as we get in Doctober, it's gonna change,
- 23:59Speaker 1: probably gonna stay up on ridges, an oak ridges and
- 24:03Speaker 1: scrapes Rob Linds. That's gonna get pretty hot here pretty soon.
- 24:09Speaker 1: You just mentioned scrapes and Rob Lindes. Have you been
- 24:12Speaker 1: seeing any signmaking in the woods yet, Um, a little bit, Uh,
- 24:17Speaker 1: starting to, not a whole lot, but uh there within
- 24:20Speaker 1: the next few weeks it should pick up. Well, you
- 24:23Speaker 1: just killed the great buck here a few nights ago.
- 24:25Speaker 1: Congrats with that. Tell us a little bit about that
- 24:27Speaker 1: hunts a little bit about that setup. Um, we hunted, Well,
- 24:32Speaker 1: it's on an oak flat. I hunted Saturday. The pressure
- 24:36Speaker 1: was sky high. I think it was thirty point two
- 24:39Speaker 1: four and I actually didn't see a deer Saturday afternoon
- 24:44Speaker 1: at all. So I was pretty discouraged about that. With
- 24:47Speaker 1: the spot I was sitting at because it's usually pretty
- 24:50Speaker 1: good and uh, I didn't even know if I wanted
- 24:53Speaker 1: to hunt Sunday, but I had a good wind, so
- 24:56Speaker 1: we decided to go back in there. The pressure was
- 24:58Speaker 1: a little lower Sunday. That was Saturday, and from five
- 25:03Speaker 1: o'clock until I shot, the deer were absolutely just traveled
- 25:09Speaker 1: up in deer every direction. There was deer everywhere, And
- 25:13Speaker 1: so you are attributing that dear movement to the pressure change,
- 25:18Speaker 1: I would think so, Um, yeah, I mean it was
- 25:22Speaker 1: thirty points one five. I think Sunday it wasn't as
- 25:28Speaker 1: high as it as Saturday. I think that had a
- 25:30Speaker 1: little bit with it the weather. The temperatures were a
- 25:33Speaker 1: little warmer actually Sunday. But um, for some reason, the
- 25:37Speaker 1: deer everybody I talked to didn't see hardly anything Saturday,
- 25:41Speaker 1: but Sunday they were just seeing a ton of deer.
- 25:45Speaker 1: Now most places in the Midwest, the combines are getting
- 25:49Speaker 1: started going. Will that change much for you guys in
- 25:52Speaker 1: your part of Kentucky with that large acorn crop or
- 25:56Speaker 1: once you see much of a difference. Mm hmm. Most
- 26:00Speaker 1: the corn here is being harvested, are already harvested. The
- 26:03Speaker 1: beans are still standing. They should be starting on them
- 26:06Speaker 1: when the ground drives up. But I would say most
- 26:09Speaker 1: people are going to be hitting re just because this year,
- 26:12Speaker 1: because the icons are just crazy amount this year going forward.
- 26:17Speaker 1: Then in the Sex week or so, what do you
- 26:19Speaker 1: think that buck activity is going to be on a
- 26:21Speaker 1: skill of one to Tanning, Kentucky going through this next week.
- 26:25Speaker 1: I don't know the weather here. I don't know about
- 26:28Speaker 1: anywhere else in Kentucky, but here and U between the
- 26:32Speaker 1: southwest and south central. It's uh, it probably stayed the
- 26:35Speaker 1: same because the weather really isn't gonna change much. It's
- 26:39Speaker 1: still it's gonna be hot, actually, and the pressure is
- 26:41Speaker 1: not gonna be they high. But it wouldn't hurt to
- 26:45Speaker 1: be out in the woods. I mean, it's it's gonna
- 26:48Speaker 1: get pretty good here soon. Congrats again on the great
- 26:51Speaker 1: buck look forward to seeing what else you guys come
- 26:53Speaker 1: up with the Dream Chasers hunt. Thanks for joining me Colton,
- 26:57Speaker 1: I appreciate it all and joining me on the next
- 27:00Speaker 1: is Gray drumming from Florida. Outdoor Experience in Florida. Now
- 27:04Speaker 1: Gray in Florida. What would you say the bucket activity
- 27:06Speaker 1: has been lately on a skiale of one to ten. Well,
- 27:10Speaker 1: I think it started out as a nine, but within
- 27:13Speaker 1: this last week in full moon it um, I think
- 27:15Speaker 1: it's down to about a four. So we're anticipating it
- 27:19Speaker 1: go back in the coming week, hopefully now in your
- 27:24Speaker 1: part of Florida, you guys are in peak rut right now?
- 27:27Speaker 1: Is that correct? We are we Um, we hit the
- 27:30Speaker 1: rut about a week and a half ago. Um, the
- 27:34Speaker 1: first part of this moon I think might have triggered it.
- 27:37Speaker 1: But UM, and and we're seeing just a lot of chasing. UM.
- 27:41Speaker 1: It's an exciting time to be out there. It's just
- 27:44Speaker 1: ninety two degrees, so it's tough. And how was the
- 27:48Speaker 1: timing of this year's rut played out versus other seasons?
- 27:53Speaker 1: You know, I've seen it this time um in my past. UM,
- 27:57Speaker 1: but it seems like it might be a week week
- 27:59Speaker 1: and a half from what I have in my books
- 28:02Speaker 1: on my calendar. But that's okay. UM. It's always nice
- 28:06Speaker 1: when it's a little closer to UM, a little further
- 28:09Speaker 1: in the fall, you know, with just comfort, um as
- 28:12Speaker 1: far as the weather goes. But UM, hey, we'll take
- 28:14Speaker 1: it when we can get it. And it's it's been active,
- 28:17Speaker 1: so it's been exciting. You reference the full moon a
- 28:19Speaker 1: little bit earlier. What are some moon phases that you're
- 28:22Speaker 1: looking for this time of year when the rut is
- 28:24Speaker 1: really going or do you think the moon doesn't quite
- 28:26Speaker 1: matter as much? Well, one thing about it, We're gonna
- 28:29Speaker 1: hunt regardless. You know, sometimes we find ourselves spending so
- 28:33Speaker 1: much time on what moon phases it's going on and everything,
- 28:37Speaker 1: and then and we tell ourselves, shoot, we're gonna go
- 28:39Speaker 1: out there regardless what it is. So um, but I
- 28:42Speaker 1: think just before the full moon is probably my favorite time.
- 28:45Speaker 1: It seems like everything is really active and moving. Um,
- 28:49Speaker 1: it's kind of um correlized with them with the start
- 28:54Speaker 1: of our rut here this time of year or this
- 28:56Speaker 1: this particular year, and um, that's generally my favorite time
- 29:00Speaker 1: just before the full moon. Uh, but it's definitely been
- 29:04Speaker 1: tricky this last week. I would say, I imagine one
- 29:08Speaker 1: of the challenges you guys face every year is the precipitation.
- 29:11Speaker 1: You guys have made quite a bit of water this
- 29:12Speaker 1: year as well. Correct we have, we have we've dodged
- 29:16Speaker 1: the hurricanes, but um, we've had quite a better rainfall
- 29:19Speaker 1: record rainfall for us and the majority of the woods.
- 29:22Speaker 1: We have a little ever ten thousand acres that we
- 29:25Speaker 1: utilize here and I would say that's flooded. So it's
- 29:31Speaker 1: been challenging. But um, you know, if you can target
- 29:34Speaker 1: the high ridges, um, find some some oaks, um on
- 29:40Speaker 1: the high ridges than you you know, that's that's what
- 29:42Speaker 1: we're trying to target right now. Um, the morning is
- 29:45Speaker 1: obviously a little more comfortable. It is getting down to
- 29:47Speaker 1: around than the upper sixties at night, so it's not
- 29:51Speaker 1: unbearable to hunt the mornings. Um. We're trying to my
- 29:55Speaker 1: strategy when we have hunters and in the morning time,
- 29:58Speaker 1: you don't obviously want to bust the deer off the
- 30:01Speaker 1: the feed patterns, so we'll try to maybe set up
- 30:04Speaker 1: some strategic ambush spots, you know them coming back from feeding. Um,
- 30:09Speaker 1: going back to bed, I would say, other than this
- 30:12Speaker 1: last week, it's been a very successful year for us
- 30:14Speaker 1: the floor. Talking about those flooded properties, how did the
- 30:19Speaker 1: deer respond once that water does recede. Are they moving
- 30:22Speaker 1: back in there pretty quickly or is there a little
- 30:25Speaker 1: bit of a leg period? Um? Were there not necessarily
- 30:28Speaker 1: working that as soon as the water's gone well the
- 30:33Speaker 1: way it is right now, that's a good question. Um.
- 30:35Speaker 1: Most of the time when it does flood, the majority
- 30:37Speaker 1: of our rains is hitting us in in August, first
- 30:41Speaker 1: part of September, and you know it won't recede UM,
- 30:47Speaker 1: I would say until about mid December. Um. Once that happens,
- 30:51Speaker 1: the majority of our acons have either rotted or dried up,
- 30:54Speaker 1: you know, and they're starting hit feed. You can't hunt
- 30:56Speaker 1: over feed in Florida attractives they had obviously a deal,
- 31:00Speaker 1: obviously spread out more. It makes it a bit more challenging,
- 31:03Speaker 1: but it kind of corelides with the acorns and the
- 31:06Speaker 1: in the natural fruit so to speak, drying up too.
- 31:09Speaker 1: So we're able to just move from targeting the high
- 31:12Speaker 1: ridges once it drives up into focusing on our attractments.
- 31:17Speaker 1: Has this been a normal you for you guys as
- 31:19Speaker 1: far as the acorn crap goes. Are you seeing an
- 31:21Speaker 1: abundance there in Florida? We we seem to always have
- 31:25Speaker 1: a pretty good acron crop, but I would say this
- 31:27Speaker 1: year has been an abundance, and it's been early too
- 31:30Speaker 1: for us. It's it's come in about three weeks early.
- 31:34Speaker 1: I don't recall seeing the quantity of acrons on the
- 31:37Speaker 1: ground as as I've seen this year, um, And that
- 31:40Speaker 1: that has made it a bit challenging. How about with signmaking,
- 31:44Speaker 1: you guys being in peak right, there are those scrapes
- 31:47Speaker 1: and rubs still relevant and something that you're keying in
- 31:50Speaker 1: on or not it's they're starting to phase out. I'm
- 31:54Speaker 1: seeing a few of them still being hit, but I'm
- 31:56Speaker 1: not seeing any of real I would say fresh new
- 31:59Speaker 1: sign um. So it's starting to phase out, definitely. But
- 32:05Speaker 1: in Florida, we have several different ruts, So this is
- 32:08Speaker 1: the first one and it's one of the few states
- 32:10Speaker 1: I've met, not the only, that they will run throughout
- 32:12Speaker 1: the season. Um. So it's and you can find a
- 32:15Speaker 1: rut in August, and you can also find a rut
- 32:18Speaker 1: um similar to Alabama's and um late January going forward.
- 32:22Speaker 1: Then in the sext week yourself, what do you think
- 32:24Speaker 1: that bucke activity is going to be on a scale
- 32:26Speaker 1: of one to ten in Florida. Well, I can't speak
- 32:29Speaker 1: for all of Florida, but I know in our part
- 32:30Speaker 1: of Florida, with it being in the rut, I anticipated
- 32:33Speaker 1: to be an eight from what I'm seeing on camera.
- 32:36Speaker 1: So if they can just shift their feed patterns into
- 32:38Speaker 1: a little bit more daylight than then it will definitely
- 32:41Speaker 1: be an eight or higher. All right, Grey, Well, thanks
- 32:44Speaker 1: for joining me, and good luck to all your hunters
- 32:46Speaker 1: at Florida Outdoor Experience. Thank you very much. Have a
- 32:49Speaker 1: good one. And that concludes this week's episode of Wired
- 32:53Speaker 1: Hunts wrote Radio. Thanks to Bryce, Tyler, Ray, and Colton
