Transcript
- 0:09Speaker 1: Hello, welcome to the Inside the Birds postgame show. I'm
- 0:12Speaker 1: Jeff Mosher. That's Adam Kaplan. And the Eagles have their
- 0:17Speaker 1: first loss of the year. It happened late, late Monday
- 0:20Speaker 1: night when it was all said and done. A 27-7
- 0:23Speaker 1: loss to the Chicago Bears in Soldier Field. And boy,
- 0:27Speaker 1: Adam Kaplan is... Are the Eagles going to be haunted
- 0:31Speaker 1: by Ben Johnson, man? If they have to play again
- 0:33Speaker 1: in the playoffs, that guy has had their number last
- 0:36Speaker 1: year in the run game. this year in the passing
- 0:38Speaker 1: game with a 38 year old quarterback. Uh, let's, let's
- 0:42Speaker 1: talk about this from a, just a big picture level
- 0:44Speaker 1: for a second. Um, there, there were like two enemies
- 0:48Speaker 1: for the Eagles, right? In this game. One was their
- 0:51Speaker 1: traditional enemy that they've been able to overcome all year,
- 0:54Speaker 1: which is living in third and long too much. And
- 0:56Speaker 1: that was really bad. The second half, um, the second
- 0:59Speaker 1: enemy was themselves in a way that we hadn't seen
- 1:02Speaker 1: in the first two games with the really bad penalties. Um,
- 1:07Speaker 1: really bad tackling, some turnovers, some bad coaching decisions, all
- 1:12Speaker 1: wrapped up into one. It was like they're not their
- 1:15Speaker 1: typical selves.
- 1:16Speaker 2: Yeah, they look like a very mediocre football team. The
- 1:19Speaker 2: game did not play out, let's be honest, like any
- 1:22Speaker 2: of us thought on the pregame show with you and
- 1:24Speaker 2: I and Greg Cosell. But yeah, there are a lot
- 1:26Speaker 2: of corrections to make. There's some things that are concerning.
- 1:30Speaker 2: It's just like, They roll the running game with phenomenal
- 1:33Speaker 2: in the first half. Barkley ran with velocity and great vision.
- 1:37Speaker 2: You're looking for that explosion through the hole and for
- 1:40Speaker 2: the vision to take over, and it did. It's the
- 1:42Speaker 2: first time in the three games where you saw them
- 1:44Speaker 2: understanding the zone scheme.
- 1:47Speaker 1: And holes. There were holes. That was good, too.
- 1:51Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, the duo blocks were phenomenal.
- 1:56Speaker 2: I was like, wow, they're crushing them on duo. And
- 1:59Speaker 2: how bad was their offense in the second half? 41
- 2:02Speaker 2: yards passing. When you're playing from behind, it's embarrassing. Terrible.
- 2:07Speaker 2: And only nine yards rushing their offense. It's like they
- 2:10Speaker 2: almost didn't play in the second half. They were so bad.
- 2:13Speaker 2: The game was lost in the third quarter. They couldn't
- 2:16Speaker 2: get anything going. And then the other troubling part is
- 2:19Speaker 2: the minus five in the turnover ratio. They don't have
- 2:21Speaker 2: a turnover. They haven't even been close to getting a
- 2:23Speaker 2: turnover in defense. Their defense is so average. Again, not
- 2:26Speaker 2: what anyone expected. I think if we're telling the truth here,
- 2:30Speaker 2: we are. We thought a lot of this defense coming in,
- 2:34Speaker 2: and they've done anything but deliver. It's been so disappointing. Like,
- 2:37Speaker 2: if you had to give a three-game takeaway for this
- 2:39Speaker 2: football team, lack of pressure on defense, lack of a
- 2:47Speaker 2: running game overall. I mean, they've ran the ball through
- 2:50Speaker 2: six quarters. They've run it well, too. And the passing game,
- 2:54Speaker 2: which looked like it was carrying them through the first
- 2:56Speaker 2: two games. In fact, it was. was nowhere to be seen.
- 3:00Speaker 2: It was, it's kind of, it was kind of individual plays.
- 3:03Speaker 2: So Sirianni, I know it was coach speak. No one
- 3:06Speaker 2: did well in this game. I mean, it was an
- 3:08Speaker 2: absolute disappointment overall from the football team. And the fact
- 3:13Speaker 2: Braden man, wasn't that good. The fact that, you know,
- 3:14Speaker 2: he's been phenomenal through two games. He wasn't even that good.
- 3:17Speaker 2: So Sirianni wasn't sugarcoating it. I mean, it was just
- 3:21Speaker 2: a lack of everything. Coaching was poor execution was poor
- 3:24Speaker 2: by the players and they earned this one. And the
- 3:26Speaker 2: first time in a game, It was a three that
- 3:28Speaker 2: they never led. They actually never led in this game,
- 3:30Speaker 2: and they kind of earned it. Like, what the 27-7 score,
- 3:35Speaker 2: blind what it looked like. I mean, it was just
- 3:37Speaker 2: a badly, poorly played game.
- 3:39Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean, like you said, everything that they could
- 3:42Speaker 1: mess up, they did. They had some bad luck, too. Obviously,
- 3:45Speaker 1: Hurts gets the late hit, has to go into the
- 3:46Speaker 1: medical tent. Dalton comes in, throws a pick. But even
- 3:49Speaker 1: with that, there are things that were avoidable or better coaching.
- 3:54Speaker 1: I know, you know, I mentioned this on the quick
- 3:56Speaker 1: recap show that you had made a really good point
- 3:58Speaker 1: about you don't have to take a timeout there when
- 4:00Speaker 1: Dalton comes in to go check on your quarterback. That's
- 4:02Speaker 1: not the point of it. We know that Brian D'Abel
- 4:05Speaker 1: got in trouble and Nick referenced that in an indirect way.
- 4:09Speaker 1: Nobody says take a timeout and go get your quarterback
- 4:11Speaker 1: in the game. Take a timeout, settle your offense, give
- 4:14Speaker 1: your first-time play caller just another more minute. Do I
- 4:18Speaker 1: really want to call a play? which you pointed out,
- 4:21Speaker 1: where it doesn't give my quarterback, who just got into
- 4:23Speaker 1: the game, a really easy throw or throw away, right?
- 4:27Speaker 1: You don't want him confused and kind of like trying
- 4:29Speaker 1: to make a play when it wasn't there, which is
- 4:30Speaker 1: exactly what Andy Dalton did. Like a timeout, even Nick admitted,
- 4:35Speaker 1: a timeout may have been a good idea there, even
- 4:37Speaker 1: though he wanted to save it just to settle things down.
- 4:40Speaker 1: And then maybe along that way, you do find out
- 4:42Speaker 1: that your quarterback can get back in the game. He
- 4:44Speaker 1: was literally kind of coming out of the tent right
- 4:46Speaker 1: as the pick got thrown. So it was just... like
- 4:50Speaker 1: you said, it was like a confluence of a lot
- 4:51Speaker 1: of bad things happening all at once. And you can
- 4:55Speaker 1: go up and down the whole game and find a
- 4:57Speaker 1: lot of that.
- 4:58Speaker 2: So what I was referencing, Jeff and I were texting
- 5:00Speaker 2: during the game. And one of the things I've learned
- 5:03Speaker 2: from talking to coaches over the years, when, when a
- 5:05Speaker 2: quarterback has to come in cold, if he's got to
- 5:07Speaker 2: throw the football, which he had to, they didn't have
- 5:09Speaker 2: a choice. Well, you could have said they had a
- 5:11Speaker 2: choice to sneak it in, but, or push it from
- 5:16Speaker 2: fourth and three, whatever the yard, whatever it was, but
- 5:21Speaker 2: is to give him an easy read, get out of
- 5:23Speaker 2: his hands quickly so he doesn't have to think out there. Like,
- 5:25Speaker 2: you define the read for him so he gets rid
- 5:27Speaker 2: of it. The play was anything but defined. Like, you
- 5:29Speaker 2: could have done a sprint right option.
- 5:30Speaker 1: Yep.
- 5:31Speaker 2: He's literally rolling to the right and throwing it one-on-one,
- 5:37Speaker 2: maybe to a tight end over here. You just want
- 5:39Speaker 2: to help him a little bit. I just didn't think
- 5:41Speaker 2: they handled it right. And I'll give Sirianni credit. He
- 5:44Speaker 2: didn't walk away from saying, because sometimes he's sarcastic when
- 5:48Speaker 2: the the media questions the play call. Because what happens
- 5:52Speaker 2: is you're questioning the result. But no, we're questioning going in.
- 5:57Speaker 2: The fourth and one, fourth and maybe it was one
- 5:59Speaker 2: and a half, trying to draw them off. Why would
- 6:02Speaker 2: you not go for it?
- 6:04Speaker 1: I was so surprised, Adam. It was almost so un-Seriani-like.
- 6:09Speaker 1: It really validated his point that everybody just had a
- 6:12Speaker 1: bad game. I don't know if that makes it easier
- 6:15Speaker 1: to shake off. It doesn't, but That was just really
- 6:18Speaker 1: on Sirianni-like. I was surprised.
- 6:20Speaker 2: And this is where they don't have a senior offensive assistant.
- 6:23Speaker 2: This is something that's been a pet peeve of mine.
- 6:26Speaker 2: Sirianni's come up short coaching, occasionally over his career, where
- 6:30Speaker 2: they don't have that guy in his ear, hey, think
- 6:33Speaker 2: about this, and he could relate it to Mannion. So, yeah,
- 6:38Speaker 2: it just was– they earned it. Now, Ben Johnson was–
- 6:43Speaker 2: It's interesting. This is where, like, you don't know what's
- 6:45Speaker 2: going to happen. Eagles control their Chicago's run game. They
- 6:48Speaker 2: did a great, really good job. Yes. But the short,
- 6:52Speaker 2: the three and five step drops, I mean, they totally
- 6:56Speaker 2: negated the Eagles pass rush.
- 6:57Speaker 1: Totally. Right.
- 6:59Speaker 2: Now, Grenard had a couple of really nice rushes. In fact,
- 7:01Speaker 2: his first one, although it went on being a big
- 7:04Speaker 2: pass play, he completely beat the tackle. He made a
- 7:07Speaker 2: jab step and beat the guy, but Case Keenum got
- 7:10Speaker 2: rid of the football. I mean, literally, every three- and
- 7:12Speaker 2: five-step drop, his back foot, which is his right foot,
- 7:16Speaker 2: as soon as it hit, balls out, they couldn't touch him. Yeah.
- 7:19Speaker 2: I mean, it was just a great job. I was
- 7:21Speaker 2: surprised that that came out of throwing. I was like, wow,
- 7:23Speaker 2: first half of this drive, are they going to throw
- 7:25Speaker 2: on every down? And they ran a little bit, mixed
- 7:27Speaker 2: it in. But they saw that because Eagles were playing
- 7:30Speaker 2: off coverage, they gave up so much space. Okay, we're
- 7:33Speaker 2: going to run crossers. And the communication from the secondary
- 7:36Speaker 2: was terrible.
- 7:36Speaker 1: Yeah, really bad.
- 7:38Speaker 2: And they don't disrupt timing. Yeah, the timing of the receivers,
- 7:41Speaker 2: it was just, Fangio is a genius and he's a
- 7:43Speaker 2: phenomenal coach, but he's got to get his guys, he's
- 7:46Speaker 2: got to redo his game plan. What he's doing is
- 7:49Speaker 2: not working.
- 7:50Speaker 1: You know, it's a really good point, and I made
- 7:53Speaker 1: this point in the recap. It does seem like these
- 7:56Speaker 1: specific offenses, right, and they're about to see two more
- 7:59Speaker 1: in the next two weeks, the ones that are Heavy motion,
- 8:02Speaker 1: heavy under center play action. Even last week against the Titans,
- 8:05Speaker 1: the under center play action that Brian Dable all of
- 8:08Speaker 1: a sudden pulled out of his rear end for Cam Ward.
- 8:10Speaker 1: That worked, right? The 25-yard strike to Ridley, the 41-yarder
- 8:14Speaker 1: to Io Manor. He had a couple of big, quick
- 8:17Speaker 1: gains in the zone against the zone from the under
- 8:23Speaker 1: center play action looks. Well, guess what the Rams are
- 8:24Speaker 1: going to do? I mean, they live in that world.
- 8:27Speaker 1: The Jacksonville Jaguars with Liam Cohen live in that world, too.
- 8:30Speaker 1: And if you go back to like the 49ers game
- 8:32Speaker 1: last year, it wasn't like an offensive eruption, but it
- 8:35Speaker 1: shouldn't have been. The Niners were down to like, yeah,
- 8:39Speaker 1: they had no weaponry and yet they still get a
- 8:41Speaker 1: trick play. They still get a few big ones to
- 8:44Speaker 1: Juwan Johnson. So I don't, you know, Vic's great and
- 8:47Speaker 1: nobody has to go up and tell him or remind
- 8:49Speaker 1: him that he, you know, He needs to be better
- 8:51Speaker 1: or anything like that. But he does have to figure
- 8:53Speaker 1: out a way to get his defense to play better,
- 8:55Speaker 1: specifically against these offenses that work off under center play action.
- 8:58Speaker 1: Because there were just too many wide open lanes.
- 9:02Speaker 2: The voids in zone, we've learned over the years, is
- 9:05Speaker 2: in every zone defense there's voids. You just have to
- 9:07Speaker 2: find them. Ben Johnson found them. Yes. And give Aikman,
- 9:11Speaker 2: Troy Aikman, credit. He pointed out repeatedly about the cavern
- 9:15Speaker 2: in the middle of the field. Like there was so
- 9:17Speaker 2: much space. It was interesting. Those are the big takeaways,
- 9:24Speaker 2: but they've got flaws, man. The offensive line was inconsistent.
- 9:32Speaker 2: The running game, as we talked about, was atrocious in
- 9:34Speaker 2: the second half after it was phenomenal. Steen's hold, by
- 9:36Speaker 2: the way, fans are wrong who are saying that that
- 9:38Speaker 2: was not a hold. It absolutely is. I've talked to
- 9:42Speaker 2: Dean Blandino, Mike Pereira over the years. When you hook
- 9:47Speaker 2: Their job is not to legislate intent or when it happened.
- 9:51Speaker 2: They only call what they see.
- 9:52Speaker 1: Right.
- 9:53Speaker 2: I know it was out of the play, and I
- 9:55Speaker 2: hate the call, but it's the correct call. When you hook,
- 9:57Speaker 2: they're calling it, man. Steen hooked them. That's the penalty.
- 10:00Speaker 2: It's textbook hook.
- 10:01Speaker 1: Yeah, no, it reminds me of when, like, yeah, when, like,
- 10:04Speaker 1: a quarterback throws to a wide receiver and it's, you know,
- 10:08Speaker 1: a good play, but on the other side of the field,
- 10:10Speaker 1: there was defensive holding. Even if the quarterback didn't look there,
- 10:12Speaker 1: the ref still has to call it. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 10:15Speaker 1: It was absolutely a hold. He had his hands inside
- 10:18Speaker 1: as he was getting past him. It was just unfortunate
- 10:20Speaker 1: for Steen and for the Eagles that it didn't factor
- 10:23Speaker 1: into the play. Beautifully designed.
- 10:25Speaker 2: It just, that's the thing that was so disappointing in
- 10:28Speaker 2: the first half is, like, They're running the ball beautifully.
- 10:32Speaker 1: Yes.
- 10:33Speaker 2: It's the first time in three games that Barkley's understanding
- 10:37Speaker 2: the timing of outside zone and when to cut and
- 10:40Speaker 2: how to read your blocks. That's the key to what
- 10:44Speaker 2: the father of the zone scheme, outside zone, the late
- 10:49Speaker 2: Alex Gibbs with the Broncos. He made it so famous
- 10:52Speaker 2: with Terrell Davis, the stretch play. And Saquon was getting it,
- 10:56Speaker 2: and boy, did he explode him. And the velocity, it's
- 10:59Speaker 2: incredible when he got it. So that's a positive. They
- 11:01Speaker 2: could take that. Now, we'll talk to Greg Cosell when
- 11:05Speaker 2: we do the inside of the tape show. We don't
- 11:06Speaker 2: know what the hell happened in the second half. That
- 11:07Speaker 2: was atrocious. They couldn't do anything right.
- 11:10Speaker 1: I do suspect, I was trying to pay attention, I
- 11:13Speaker 1: do suspect that Greg will say, because it looked to
- 11:16Speaker 1: me like the Bears were starting to shoot gaps with
- 11:18Speaker 1: linebackers or a second-level player, just to have one more
- 11:23Speaker 1: gap covered up and maybe force Saquon into a cutback.
- 11:26Speaker 1: But Which would be a good adjustment. And if that's
- 11:28Speaker 1: the case, it clearly worked. I was, yeah, I'm with you.
- 11:32Speaker 1: But I thought it was more, I thought the offensive
- 11:35Speaker 1: line was resetting line of scrimmage on those wide zone
- 11:37Speaker 1: runs and giving Saquon. a really good hole, and then
- 11:41Speaker 1: he was just naturally using that butticism getting through. Either way,
- 11:44Speaker 1: whatever the point is, they were running the ball really
- 11:46Speaker 1: well in the first half, and it literally just fizzled
- 11:49Speaker 1: out and died in the second half. And then you
- 11:51Speaker 1: got a repeat. Well, then you got the cautionary tale
- 11:54Speaker 1: that you and I have been talking about now for
- 11:56Speaker 1: two weeks and saying, yes, the offense has been playing great.
- 11:59Speaker 1: Hertz is total command of the offense. It's true, you
- 12:02Speaker 1: can see he's comfortable, but there's just no way in
- 12:05Speaker 1: the world you can play an entire 17-game schedule and
- 12:09Speaker 1: get that kind of play when you are constantly living
- 12:12Speaker 1: in unmanageable down and distances. And we kept saying, against
- 12:15Speaker 1: a good team, against a better defensive play caller, that
- 12:18Speaker 1: will hurt you, and it absolutely did. You just cannot
- 12:20Speaker 1: continue to get bailout and bailout on second and third
- 12:23Speaker 1: and long from a quarterback. It's just eventually those kind
- 12:27Speaker 1: of– they call that unmanageable down and distance for a reason.
- 12:30Speaker 1: It's not a way to live. And unfortunately, that's what
- 12:32Speaker 1: really killed the Eagles. They had no first down offense.
- 12:36Speaker 1: And the one step forward, two steps back to things
- 12:40Speaker 1: also applies to the play calling because we both liked
- 12:42Speaker 1: that on the first two drives, the Eagles came out
- 12:44Speaker 1: throwing on first down, which is what we felt. We
- 12:47Speaker 1: said that during the week. You're not running the ball well.
- 12:49Speaker 1: Maybe it's a good idea to loosen up a defense
- 12:51Speaker 1: by coming out and throwing on first down. And they
- 12:54Speaker 1: did that early in the game. Second half, it felt
- 12:57Speaker 1: like a retreat back to Try to run the ball
- 13:00Speaker 1: in first down. Go nowhere. And the play that really
- 13:03Speaker 1: killed them to me and set the whole tone for
- 13:05Speaker 1: the second half, Adam, was the second play of the
- 13:08Speaker 1: third quarter. So they come out. Remember, they get the momentum.
- 13:11Speaker 1: They get a touchdown going into halftime. Hertz came back.
- 13:14Speaker 1: He looked under control. They get a nice seven-yard run
- 13:16Speaker 1: from Barkley on the first play. What is the second play?
- 13:19Speaker 1: It is a screen. A screen from a ghost motion.
- 13:22Speaker 1: to Makai Lemon that goes for minus two. And now
- 13:26Speaker 1: you're back to third and long, and then Hertz gets
- 13:29Speaker 1: pressured and he has to roll out of the pocket
- 13:32Speaker 1: and then he gets sacked. And then the second drive
- 13:35Speaker 1: there again in second and third and long, and then
- 13:38Speaker 1: Hertz almost throws the interception to TJ Edwards, which would
- 13:41Speaker 1: be the same exact blitz package that Dennis Allen uses
- 13:46Speaker 1: a few plays later to make it that he does
- 13:48Speaker 1: throw the ball to TJ Edwards. But man, that, That
- 13:51Speaker 1: ghost motion screen that went nowhere, that was such an
- 13:54Speaker 1: ominous play because you almost knew this play is not working.
- 13:58Speaker 1: You keep trying it and it puts you behind the stakes.
- 14:01Speaker 2: Their orbit motion has not worked at all. In fact,
- 14:04Speaker 2: I don't know if there's even a grade for this
- 14:06Speaker 2: by the stat services. Eagles have to be the worst
- 14:08Speaker 2: screen team of the 32 teams since Sirianni's been head coach.
- 14:13Speaker 2: They have to be the worst.
- 14:15Speaker 1: They have to.
- 14:16Speaker 2: It's so embarrassingly bad. Now, And people want to point
- 14:20Speaker 2: out predictability. That's fine. I'm not going to argue. But
- 14:23Speaker 2: the bigger point you're missing is they cannot block at all.
- 14:25Speaker 2: That's the thing we have to speak more about. It's
- 14:28Speaker 2: been absolutely atrocious. The receivers and tight ends cannot block
- 14:31Speaker 2: for those plays. It's like anything behind the line of scrimmage.
- 14:34Speaker 2: They can't do it. And Sirianni says the same thing.
- 14:38Speaker 2: We have to do a better job. We have to
- 14:40Speaker 2: do a better job. Yeah. How about either taking it
- 14:42Speaker 2: out because you can't do it or coming up with
- 14:46Speaker 2: something else that might work? Right. Reverse it. Try something different.
- 14:51Speaker 2: It's just embarrassing. It's crazy because West Coast offenses, man,
- 14:54Speaker 2: they live in screen game. Kyle Shannon, one of the
- 14:57Speaker 2: best in NFL history, calling it.
- 14:58Speaker 1: For sure.
- 14:59Speaker 2: Christian McCaffrey. But anyway, it's bad. And guess what happened
- 15:04Speaker 2: as we ran up the offense? Saquon got blown up again.
- 15:06Speaker 2: DeMarco Jackson with that great blitz. It's just Saquon just
- 15:11Speaker 2: cannot pass protect. He's just bad at it. He got
- 15:13Speaker 2: blown up badly. Yeah.
- 15:14Speaker 1: We had this conversation last week. We said, listen, if
- 15:18Speaker 1: you want to run this wide zone– What happens when
- 15:20Speaker 1: you don't have wide receivers who are killers in the
- 15:23Speaker 1: run game? And they don't. You know, Wicks is probably
- 15:25Speaker 1: the only one because he's a big body who can
- 15:26Speaker 1: give you some good blocking on the outside. He's not perfect,
- 15:29Speaker 1: but he's good. But Lemon's not much of a– I mean,
- 15:31Speaker 1: he's not a big guy to begin with. He's willing,
- 15:33Speaker 1: but not great. We know Devontae Smith. They don't want
- 15:36Speaker 1: him blocking too much with the knees and the hamstring
- 15:38Speaker 1: that he has. Munt is a good blocker, but, you know,
- 15:41Speaker 1: you're really short on tight ends. And you had– Zach
- 15:43Speaker 1: Ertz was actually– God bless Zach Ertz. I can't believe
- 15:46Speaker 1: he played as much as he did. That's a story
- 15:48Speaker 1: unto itself. But he was responsible, he even admitted it,
- 15:52Speaker 1: for one of the bad blocks that blew up one
- 15:54Speaker 1: of those screens or hitch plays that we're talking about.
- 15:57Speaker 1: So you have to have the personnel to fit your scheme,
- 16:00Speaker 1: and I'm not quite sure they can do that at
- 16:02Speaker 1: the moment to do what they want to do when
- 16:05Speaker 1: you don't have that edge blocking that those offenses really
- 16:08Speaker 1: rely on. There's no magic fix for that either, I
- 16:11Speaker 1: don't think.
- 16:12Speaker 2: No, there's no elixir for it. But here's what surprised
- 16:14Speaker 2: me with Ertz. 19 snaps were not a surprise. I
- 16:17Speaker 2: thought he'd get up to 20. Here's what the surprise was.
- 16:19Speaker 2: 38% of the snaps. I thought maybe 25%, 30 at most.
- 16:24Speaker 1: Right.
- 16:24Speaker 2: That's look, I know that they knew from talking to
- 16:28Speaker 2: him leading up to the signing that he felt he
- 16:32Speaker 2: was ready to go, but Holy smokes. That's it. Yeah.
- 16:34Speaker 2: Here's what's that. That tells you where they are at
- 16:36Speaker 2: tight end without Goddard bad. As we outline in August,
- 16:40Speaker 2: this is what you get. They have to sign another
- 16:43Speaker 2: tight end. They have to add one at some point,
- 16:45Speaker 2: hopefully sooner rather than later. Someone on the street who
- 16:48Speaker 2: could come in and play was much younger than Zach,
- 16:50Speaker 2: who turns 36 very soon. So that's troubling as we
- 16:54Speaker 2: ran off the offense. Now, Greg Cosell told us Wicks
- 16:58Speaker 2: actually was a very good blocker coming from Green Bay.
- 17:02Speaker 2: So formationally, they have to get him out there to
- 17:05Speaker 2: blocks because whatever they're trying is not working. The passing
- 17:09Speaker 2: game took a major step back in this game.
- 17:12Speaker 1: It was bad.
- 17:13Speaker 2: There were individual plays, yes. Smith's play down the right side.
- 17:17Speaker 2: down the right side was phenomenal. The adjustment that he
- 17:20Speaker 2: made was phenomenal. But they've got so much to clean
- 17:23Speaker 2: up on offense.

- 20:01Speaker 1: Camden Apothecary, top quality cannabis, great prices, and an experience
- 20:06Speaker 1: made for Philly fans 21 and up.
- 20:09Speaker 2: And they're on a short week and Chris Schull and
- 20:12Speaker 2: the Rams come in who are smarting from an awful
- 20:15Speaker 2: loss on some crazy, somewhat correct penalties. But that's going
- 20:23Speaker 2: to be tough, but at least they're home on Sunday.
- 20:25Speaker 1: Hurts has three interceptions. We've talked about this before. I'm
- 20:28Speaker 1: willing to trade interceptions for a more downfield, aggressive approach,
- 20:32Speaker 1: as long as they're not just really bad interceptions, but
- 20:35Speaker 1: The one against the Titans was a bad one. Well,
- 20:38Speaker 1: he threw two, right?
- 20:39Speaker 2: The first one was bad.
- 20:40Speaker 1: One of them got hit. I got no issue with that.
- 20:41Speaker 1: He got hit. It happens. You're trying to drive the ball.
- 20:43Speaker 1: That's one of those examples. But the one that he
- 20:46Speaker 1: threw to TJ Monday night against the Bears was unfortunate,
- 20:50Speaker 1: especially because that was the same exact look that had
- 20:54Speaker 1: happened two drives earlier where he almost threw an interception.
- 20:58Speaker 1: To T.J. Edwards.
- 20:59Speaker 2: He threw a line drive to his hands up here.
- 21:01Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. He's thinking that it's a blitzer, not a dropper,
- 21:05Speaker 1: and he's.
- 21:05Speaker 2: Trying to throw it to the spot. In this game,
- 21:10Speaker 2: Chicago did a much better job of what the Titans
- 21:14Speaker 2: and Commandos couldn't do. Because Hertz was so good throwing
- 21:17Speaker 2: in the middle of the field. Well, Chicago changed the
- 21:20Speaker 2: picture post-snap. And getting that muddied look, Now, whether they've
- 21:27Speaker 2: got to get the screen game involved, if they're taken
- 21:29Speaker 2: away from Hurts, he's got to get rid of the football.
- 21:31Speaker 2: They've got to get someone else breaking in. They've just
- 21:34Speaker 2: got to change this because now Chris Shull and the
- 21:37Speaker 2: Rams defense coordinator sees this. Oh, this is giving him problems.
- 21:41Speaker 2: Guess what we're going to do? Yeah. We might rush
- 21:44Speaker 2: three and drop eight. They're going to do something because
- 21:48Speaker 2: Hurts was so phenomenal in the first two games. teams adjust.
- 21:53Speaker 2: Dennis Allen, I'll give the guy credit. We talked about
- 21:55Speaker 2: this in the pregame. They're not a very talented defense,
- 21:58Speaker 2: but they execute really, really well, and he's a phenomenal
- 22:00Speaker 2: defensive coordinator, and he's solid in this game.
- 22:02Speaker 1: Yeah, they play hard, too. They play hard, they play fast.
- 22:04Speaker 1: You're right. They're not great, but they play to the whistle,
- 22:06Speaker 1: as you saw with the late hit there on Jalen Hurts,
- 22:09Speaker 1: which it was a late hit, but he really did
- 22:13Speaker 1: get him into the shoulder not the head and it
- 22:15Speaker 1: was as hurts was stepping out i'm not making an
- 22:17Speaker 1: excuse it should have been a penalty and it was
- 22:18Speaker 1: uh nick got crazy with it he admitted after the
- 22:22Speaker 1: game he got a little too crazy i think he
- 22:23Speaker 1: was yelling at the player calling him names which is
- 22:25Speaker 1: like how often you thought you're a head coach dude
- 22:28Speaker 1: like let your players do that you can defend your
- 22:31Speaker 1: players you don't have to go across the line but
- 22:33Speaker 1: it's nick so he does uh but yeah Yeah.
- 22:41Speaker 2: If you hear, if you heard him after the game,
- 22:42Speaker 2: he contradicts himself. He goes, I know I shouldn't do that,
- 22:45Speaker 2: but I'm trying to protect my players.
- 22:46Speaker 1: Right.
- 22:47Speaker 2: It keeps going back and forth. He's, he's kind of
- 22:48Speaker 2: talking him as he's saying it.
- 22:50Speaker 1: Right.
- 22:50Speaker 2: He's like, yeah, you know, I shouldn't have done that,
- 22:52Speaker 2: but I got to protect my players. He keeps going
- 22:53Speaker 2: back and forth. Yeah. There's a way to do it.
- 22:56Speaker 2: And again, we're not going to repeat.
- 22:57Speaker 1: It's funny.
- 22:58Speaker 2: Cause it's out in social media that the, the, the
- 23:00Speaker 2: aggregators were transcribing what he was saying. It's pretty, pretty
- 23:04Speaker 2: actually funny. Yeah. Yeah. But anyway. All right.
- 23:09Speaker 1: Defensively.
- 23:09Speaker 2: All right.
- 23:10Speaker 1: So we did talk about the fact that these kind
- 23:11Speaker 1: of offenses are giving Nick Fianjo a little bit of issue.
- 23:14Speaker 1: So we've already covered that. The safety thing is interesting, right?
- 23:18Speaker 1: Because Epps played. He missed the tackle on the opening
- 23:23Speaker 1: series and then was part of the gang of guys
- 23:26Speaker 1: who missed the tackle on Luther Burden for the touchdown.
- 23:29Speaker 1: Michael Carter comes in.
- 23:30Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 23:30Speaker 1: Yeah, Michael Carter comes in, and at the time, you
- 23:33Speaker 1: think he saves the day, right? This is the next
- 23:36Speaker 1: drive where then he tackles Colston Loveland at the one-yard line.
- 23:40Speaker 1: They originally called a touchdown. Replay shows that Carter makes
- 23:45Speaker 1: a nice tackle on him with his elbow down at
- 23:47Speaker 1: the one, and then they don't get the touchdown because
- 23:49Speaker 1: what did they do? They threw the interception in the
- 23:51Speaker 1: end zone? I forget how. They turned the ball over there.
- 23:54Speaker 1: At that point. So it was looking like, all right,
- 23:56Speaker 1: this is good, but he's clearly working it through with this.
- 23:59Speaker 2: No, no interception.
- 24:00Speaker 1: No, no.
- 24:00Speaker 2: They, they Q made the deflection.
- 24:03Speaker 1: Oh, that's right. That's what it was. It should have
- 24:04Speaker 1: been that man. You talk about, listen, I love, we, we,
- 24:07Speaker 1: we think Q is great. He's an all pro. You
- 24:10Speaker 1: want to be DPO. Why you got to get picks.
- 24:12Speaker 1: That was an opportunity to take that one back.
- 24:15Speaker 2: His, his knock in college. He had one knock. It was,
- 24:18Speaker 2: it really wasn't his own, his own man thing. Cause
- 24:20Speaker 2: he didn't really play man. That was not a problem.
- 24:22Speaker 2: So I was told, The big problem is he had
- 24:24Speaker 2: terrible hands. He'd fight the football. He just had bad
- 24:27Speaker 2: hands in college. But you love the makeup, the mental toughness,
- 24:30Speaker 2: the talent, the length. He's an incredibly talented guy, one
- 24:34Speaker 2: of the top five corners of the football, maybe three,
- 24:37Speaker 2: but doesn't have good hands. And it's just, it is
- 24:41Speaker 2: a little hard to believe that I'm a turnover in
- 24:42Speaker 2: the first three games, but I give, as we will
- 24:45Speaker 2: finish this off with defense, I give Ben Johnson credit.
- 24:49Speaker 2: I talked about it 10 minutes ago or so. They
- 24:52Speaker 2: came in with what they thought in coverage they would get,
- 24:54Speaker 2: and they got it. They didn't have– came in and
- 24:57Speaker 2: did a lot of seven-step drops. He doesn't have a
- 25:01Speaker 2: big arm, but I'll tell you what, his intermediate throws
- 25:03Speaker 2: are phenomenal. Yeah. On time, on target. Ball location was
- 25:07Speaker 2: really good, and they got it out of his hands quickly,
- 25:10Speaker 2: and they just couldn't get to him. That's how you
- 25:12Speaker 2: negate– I'm sure Vic will talk about it– play the
- 25:14Speaker 2: quick game. But, again, you see what they're doing, adjust
- 25:18Speaker 2: to it, and disrupt their timing. They don't do anything
- 25:20Speaker 2: to disrupt timing, nothing.
- 25:21Speaker 1: Correct. And listen, I tip my cap to Keenum, but
- 25:25Speaker 1: to your point, like the throw that he made with
- 25:28Speaker 1: Jalex Hunt barreling down on him where off his back
- 25:30Speaker 1: foot across his body, he kind of let it float
- 25:32Speaker 1: in the air towards the timeline. I forgot who caught it.
- 25:36Speaker 1: But when he did that, Adam, I thought, the guy's
- 25:39Speaker 1: on a heater, man.
- 25:40Speaker 2: I know. His accuracy was crazy.
- 25:43Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 25:45Speaker 2: But again, muddy it a little bit. It's just very vanilla.
- 25:50Speaker 2: Let me ask you this question. What are you more
- 25:53Speaker 2: disappointed in after three games of defense or the offense?
- 25:55Speaker 2: It's kind of a tough question, but we do have
- 25:57Speaker 2: the two and one, but they don't feel like it.
- 25:59Speaker 1: Yeah, no, I think it's a good question. I would
- 26:01Speaker 1: say the defense, because at least the offense has an
- 26:03Speaker 1: excuse of a having some injuries up front, um, be
- 26:08Speaker 1: learning a new offense, new scheme, you know, no AJ Brown,
- 26:11Speaker 1: new wider. So it's going through the growing pains right
- 26:14Speaker 1: now of trying to change his identity. This defense has
- 26:17Speaker 1: all pros at every level. It's supposed to be hit
- 26:21Speaker 1: the ground type running, uh, There was all this comfort
- 26:23Speaker 1: in the scheme that we talked about with Vic Fangio.
- 26:25Speaker 1: So maybe you'll see some different things. And by the way,
- 26:28Speaker 1: you did see, he threw a cornerback blitz, a recall
- 26:30Speaker 1: and blitzing off the edge. Yeah. Yeah. He tried like, listen,
- 26:34Speaker 1: I'm not going to, Vic's not untouchable, but he also
- 26:37Speaker 1: did blitz, I think 10 times. And it just, whatever
- 26:40Speaker 1: it did, didn't work. I'd say he tried some to
- 26:42Speaker 1: do some different things. But, yeah, I thought the defense–
- 26:46Speaker 1: I had way higher expectations for this defense. I think
- 26:49Speaker 1: Jalen Carter we've talked about. He did not get interior
- 26:52Speaker 1: pressure against the Bears, and he has not really been
- 26:55Speaker 1: an interior force on defense outside of the block kick
- 26:59Speaker 1: on special teams.
- 26:59Speaker 2: That was big.
- 27:00Speaker 1: But he hasn't been a force. There's been no turnovers.
- 27:04Speaker 1: That's surprising to me. I know they come in bunches,
- 27:07Speaker 1: but I also think on key second and third downs
- 27:10Speaker 1: for three weeks– quarterbacks have had too much time to
- 27:13Speaker 1: throw to begin with yep yeah they just there have
- 27:16Speaker 1: been some good moments i'm not going to say the
- 27:18Speaker 1: eagles have just completely faltered at rushing the quarterback they've
- 27:22Speaker 1: had some good moments certainly jayden daniels was on the
- 27:24Speaker 1: run a lot but all together when you're facing two
- 27:28Speaker 1: bad teams and one team on his third string quarterback
- 27:31Speaker 1: you really need to have at least one turnover i
- 27:34Speaker 1: mean that's that's almost that's very surprising.
- 27:37Speaker 2: So a couple notes on the snap counts. Shipley out-snapped Bigsby.
- 27:41Speaker 2: Bigsby had a bad fumble.
- 27:42Speaker 1: Yeah, he got punished.
- 27:43Speaker 2: That hurt him. Bigsby only played two snaps. Shipley was
- 27:47Speaker 2: more or less their third down back. He had 13 snaps.
- 27:50Speaker 1: Remember, Bigsby put the ball on the ground. Was it
- 27:52Speaker 1: against the Titans or Commanders 2? And he was able
- 27:55Speaker 1: to recover it, but he put the ball on the
- 27:57Speaker 1: ground once before this year.
- 27:58Speaker 2: I mean, they put the defense at tough predicament.
- 28:01Speaker 1: For sure.
- 28:02Speaker 2: Elijah Moore played six. Hollywood Brown was hurt. He had
- 28:06Speaker 2: the ankle injury. Unfortunately, they could have used him. They're
- 28:09Speaker 2: still playing a lot of 11 personnel because of Lemon.
- 28:13Speaker 2: And Lemon did more in this game, but he needs
- 28:17Speaker 2: to be more impactful in the short area because when
- 28:20Speaker 2: you spend a first-round pick on a slot receiver, he's
- 28:22Speaker 2: got to control the middle, short area and the middle.
- 28:27Speaker 2: And that's something they have to do with him. But again,
- 28:29Speaker 2: he's only played three games. Yeah. So I thought that
- 28:33Speaker 2: was interesting. Ertz, again, played 19 snaps, but 38% of
- 28:36Speaker 2: the snaps. They only had 50 on offense. They got
- 28:38Speaker 2: ball control. The Bears pass a game control, not the
- 28:42Speaker 2: run game. That's the bizarre thing. I never would have
- 28:44Speaker 2: predicted that coming into the game. No way you could.
- 28:47Speaker 1: That's the long-term concern. If these teams have to meet
- 28:49Speaker 1: in the playoffs, the concern is that the Bears and
- 28:54Speaker 1: Ben Johnson have figured out how to beat Vic Fangio's
- 28:56Speaker 1: defense twice in two different ways. OK, so they have
- 28:59Speaker 1: that mental advantage saying you want to take this away.
- 29:02Speaker 1: We can do that. You want to take that. And
- 29:03Speaker 1: next time we meet you, we might actually have our
- 29:05Speaker 1: starting quarterback. So we'll see about that. But I mean,
- 29:08Speaker 1: I just think that that's there's a little bit of
- 29:10Speaker 1: a mental advantage there for the Bears being able to
- 29:12Speaker 1: beat them in two different ways. Yes.
- 29:14Speaker 2: And on defense, this is another one that surprised me. Now,
- 29:18Speaker 2: part of it is because I'm sure it's because of
- 29:20Speaker 2: they wanted to slow down. They did Chicago's run game.
- 29:23Speaker 2: Davis outstapped. out snapped a Jomo only by three Davis
- 29:27Speaker 2: had 42 snaps, 58% of the snaps or Jomo 39, 54%. Uh,
- 29:31Speaker 2: Ebiketi played a lot or Ebiketi. I'm sorry. That's how
- 29:35Speaker 2: you pronounce it. 40% of the snaps, 29 snaps overall,
- 29:39Speaker 2: And Epson, Carter, they almost split. Epson, 27 snaps. Carter, 20. Epson, 38%. Carter, 28%.
- 29:47Speaker 2: Grenard did have 18 snaps, 25% of the snaps. And
- 29:51Speaker 2: I did notice Ty Robinson, and he got 12 snaps
- 29:53Speaker 2: in this game. And Trott Jr. got six snaps on defense.
- 29:57Speaker 1: Okay. Okay. Interesting as Vic is trying to figure out
- 30:01Speaker 1: the right formulas there. You know, I look at this
- 30:04Speaker 1: and let's put a bow on this here. It's one loss.
- 30:08Speaker 1: It's not, it's not the worst thing in the world.
- 30:11Speaker 1: Do have a little bit of a gauntlet still remaining
- 30:13Speaker 1: there here with the Rams on short week. Right. And
- 30:15Speaker 1: then the Jaguars after that, I get the feeling they'll
- 30:18Speaker 1: win at least one of those two Adam. I mean,
- 30:21Speaker 1: I'm not going to sit here and go, Oh, they
- 30:22Speaker 1: lost this game against the bears. So now they're, they're terrible.
- 30:25Speaker 1: It's not going to be easy, but I feel like
- 30:27Speaker 1: they'll get one of those two. We'll see. let's say
- 30:29Speaker 1: even if they lost all two and you're two and three,
- 30:32Speaker 1: I mean, you have a nice little four game stretch
- 30:33Speaker 1: before the buy of Panthers, Cowboys, commanders, giants. So you
- 30:37Speaker 1: should be able to win at least, at least two,
- 30:40Speaker 1: if not three or all four of those. And then
- 30:44Speaker 1: the second half will be interesting because that, at that
- 30:46Speaker 1: point coming out of the buy week 11, you will have,
- 30:50Speaker 1: you will expect, we'll be talking about this offense now
- 30:54Speaker 1: is not in training wheels. It's time to, stop existing
- 30:57Speaker 1: in second and third and long. It's time to have
- 30:58Speaker 1: a harmony fluidity from kickoff to finish. And then you'll
- 31:02Speaker 1: see the Steelers Cowboys. I mean, the Cardinals are nothing great,
- 31:06Speaker 1: but the Colts Seahawks Texans Niners, John, you know, the
- 31:10Speaker 1: teams by the second half of the season that you
- 31:12Speaker 1: expect to be pretty good will probably be good. And
- 31:14Speaker 1: the Eagles will have to be better fundamentally at what
- 31:18Speaker 1: they do.
- 31:19Speaker 2: They got two major West coast teams coming up here.
- 31:22Speaker 2: You've got, you've got Rams and McVay. Because he sees
- 31:26Speaker 2: what he just saw. And he sees the spacing that
- 31:30Speaker 2: the defense has given up. And then you've got Liam Cohen.
- 31:33Speaker 2: And by the way, they are super loaded in past
- 31:35Speaker 2: target group. Super loaded. They're one of the deepest. Parker Washington.
- 31:39Speaker 2: People play fantasy know he's. We are. He was like
- 31:42Speaker 2: the breakout year for everybody. And he's having one. And
- 31:45Speaker 2: then Jacoby Marsh, good slot. And Brian Thomas. And Brenton
- 31:49Speaker 2: Strange out of Penn State is becoming a really good
- 31:51Speaker 2: tight end. They've got a big contract extension.
- 31:53Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
- 31:54Speaker 2: Their run game is okay with Tootin, but they're really loaded.
- 31:57Speaker 2: They're really good. And this is going to be interesting.
- 32:01Speaker 2: These next two games are fascinating. Honestly, if they're one-on-one
- 32:05Speaker 2: out of this one, I'd be happy. Sure. Oh, yeah.
- 32:13Speaker 2: It's a tough thing. And the Eagles are a great
- 32:14Speaker 2: road team. We know that. But it's interesting. Best road
- 32:18Speaker 2: record by far in the National Football League since Sirianni
- 32:20Speaker 2: came in is the Eagles. But it's well below 500.
- 32:25Speaker 2: Not a lot of Monday night games, but they're bad
- 32:27Speaker 2: on Monday night for some reason. It's hard to explain.
- 32:29Speaker 2: But I'm interested to see what their corrections are. I'm
- 32:33Speaker 2: interested to see what they look like against the Rams.
- 32:36Speaker 2: And Rams having to play at 1 o'clock Eastern on Sunday,
- 32:39Speaker 2: I'll never understand that one, why it's not 4 o'clock.
- 32:41Speaker 2: It's one of the few things we don't know why.
- 32:44Speaker 2: But that's it. So they are 2-1. The NFC East
- 32:51Speaker 2: is terrible overall. Washington's destroyed by injury. Giant season's over.
- 32:56Speaker 2: I know they're 2-1, but my goodness gracious. Quarterback's done.
- 33:00Speaker 2: Best pass rusher's done. They're a disaster. And the Cowboys choked.
- 33:05Speaker 2: As Jason Avant would say, Cowboys are going to Cowboy. Boy,
- 33:07Speaker 2: did they Cowboy. Our friend Christian Parker's struggling. He's struggling, man.
- 33:11Speaker 2: Their defense is really bad.
- 33:13Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. And some coaching decisions by Brian Schottenheimer at
- 33:16Speaker 1: the end of that game certainly did not help. Yeah.
- 33:19Speaker 2: All right.
- 33:19Speaker 1: So that is the, that's, that's going to do it
- 33:21Speaker 1: for this. We've we've listened. Oh, I think we already
- 33:23Speaker 1: mentioned it, but I'm going to say one more time
- 33:25Speaker 1: before first and foremost, anything got to fix the penalties.
- 33:27Speaker 1: You cannot have 10 penalties.
- 33:28Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
- 33:29Speaker 1: You got to be fundamentally better. And that's what the
- 33:32Speaker 1: Eagles will have to work on along with the other
- 33:34Speaker 1: stuff that we talked about. That's going to do it
- 33:36Speaker 1: for this episode of the inside the birds post game
