- 0:00SPEAKER_02: Welcome back to Keeping It Relevant.
- 0:02SPEAKER_02: It's Alex, Cody, John.
- 0:05SPEAKER_02: And we're back again with our recent relevant news.
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, let me uh I got you on the relativity.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: Um let's see.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: So this week, about two days ago, I think it was, the new Spider-Man trailer came out, which looks amazing.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: Yes, but interesting.
- 0:26SPEAKER_02: Also very friendly.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: Like when he was uh does it look friendly?
- 0:30SPEAKER_02: Or fantastic.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: Oh or amazing.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: I said amazing.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: Or ultimate.
- 0:35SPEAKER_02: They're ultimate.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: Or friendly.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: We were said friendly.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: Well, you know.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: I gotta get in there too.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: Or Toby Maguire.
- 0:44SPEAKER_02: I've so I've heard he's not in this one.
- 0:47SPEAKER_02: No.
- 0:47SPEAKER_02: But I've heard he's in a different thing.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: I th yeah, same.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: Um but anyways, the new Spider-Man trailer came out uh this week, and with the announcement of tickets on sale now, I have not gotten my tickets yet.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: I actually I might just do that during this recording.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: I don't know, I might.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: But um, anyways, so there's that.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: Uh Glenn Danzing, the Danzing tour he just announced yesterday.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: Uh North America tour, it's like five or six dates he's doing, which is pretty cool.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: Um maybe more.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: He's kind of in a weird spot right now.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: Uh of course, FIFA, the World Cup's happening.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: Uh, Mexico beat South Korea yesterday, and today America beat Australia, and that's all I follow for the World Cup is Mexico and America.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 1:37SPEAKER_02: So Mexico clinched the number one spot in their group to move on.
- 1:43SPEAKER_02: The USA will find out tonight if they clinch the number one spot.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: Isn't there a chance for England and America to like go against each other on like the 4th of July?
- 1:53SPEAKER_02: If England I thought I want to say if England makes their top spot in their group and then you follow the tree up to the quarterfinals, and we all win, the quarterfinals will be held July 4th in Philadelphia.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: Freak! In Philadelphia!
- 2:08SPEAKER_02: In Philadelphia.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: Freak, yes, dude.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: I freaking I let rig the game.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: I don't care who you need to pay off.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: Let's make that happen.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: Let's just do it all over again 250 years later, dude.
- 2:24SPEAKER_02: It is FIFA, so paying them off probably wouldn't be that hard.
- 2:27SPEAKER_02: It's just what number of monies do you want to give them?
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: We're not making it that far.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: He goes, we're not.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: I only have one truck of Spanish gold.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: They probably want two.
- 2:39SPEAKER_02: They probably want human monies.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: Not Spanish gold?
- 2:42SPEAKER_02: Probably not.
- 2:44SPEAKER_01: Like human dollars.
- 2:46SPEAKER_01: I mean, Spanish gold is human dollars.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: It's worth more than the US dollar, I think.
- 2:50SPEAKER_01: So it very much is.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: You know, you know what, Alex Deal.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: I will now pay you, I'll stop paying you in Spanish gold.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: I'll start paying you in hard-earned American dollars.
- 3:02SPEAKER_02: You pay me?
- 3:03SPEAKER_02: So.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: So next we have um speaking of money, we have the AMC stock.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: It is above a dollar now.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: It is now at$2.80, roughly around where it was before it straight up plummeted to below a dollar when it was like 98 cents, 95 cents.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: Uh, I wish uh Cody was with me when it happened.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: We were on the phone with my brother, who's a finance guy.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: I should have followed his advice and just dropped$50 for 50 shares in uh AMC stock.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: But uh when it was like it was like I think the lows I saw was like 95 cents.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: But dang it.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: We'll see what happens with that.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: There's um there's a lot going on right now with AMC.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: They uh especially after CinemaCon, a lot of people I guess had called them out.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: What I'm hearing, I don't know for sure I wasn't there, but a few people in the talks of everything was calling out AMC.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: It was just like stop being stupid.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: And of course, we also talked last episode about uh IMAX being on for sale right now.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: Of course, the studios, uh Sony and Apple are like, hey, we want to buy it.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: But Word on the Street is because they work so hand in hand with AMC that AMC might actually be the ones to buy IMAX.
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: I don't know how I feel about that, but it I mean if it helps them with their stock, cool.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: But it this could also just be another thing to put them in debt and could really ruin them, but I don't know.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: Oh, also the Paramount Warner Brothers thing is still going on.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: That's been really interesting.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: Uh England.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: Well the EU is now involved with it, not not the UK.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: And uh, of course, there's a whole thing with California and New York.
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: Um, but do your own research for that.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: That's pretty wild.
- 4:51SPEAKER_02: That's a it's a can of worms, is what it is.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: It was so normal, and then it wasn't, and then now it's like I I still think the merger is gonna go through, but every day it doesn't, especially with the clause they have about paying the shareholders if it goes so long without it going through, makes me think that um it won't go through and they're just shooting themselves in the foot, and then maybe Netflix could swoop in and take it.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: But uh Netflix is doing great, they're actually um have their own studio for movies now.
- 5:28SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: So I'm really excited about that.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: And then the final thing, uh today, Toy Story 5 comes out of theaters and is projected to have a 150 to 170 million dollar opening.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: I have heard great things about it.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: Last I saw, and I'll look it up right now, Toy Story 5 had a uh 100% on Rotten Tomato.
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: Let's see if that is still the case.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: Uh if I can find Rotten Tomato scores, that'd be great.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: And of course, uh, I'm talking about the critic score, not the audience score.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: However, I'm not sure if anyone if you guys know this or not, ever since last year or a few years ago, Rotten Tomatoes did make it that if you're an audience member doing an audience score, you have to verify that you saw the movie first through a pay stub or a ticket of seeing the movie.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: So I didn't know that.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: So it's no longer at 100%.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: The critics are saying out of 197 critics, 94% of them said that it is great.
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: And out of a thousand plus viewers, 95 say it was great.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: And this is one of the rare moments where viewers and critics are seeing eye to eye.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: So I think I'm gonna go see it today in about an hour.
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: So I'm pretty excited to go check it out and see what's up.
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: I used to be on the bandwagon of being like, Why are you making another one?
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: Stop making more.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: This is so stupid.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: I'm I am no longer that bandwagon, and when you actually break down Toy Story, they don't actually keep making them because it's been 30 years and we only have five.
- 7:01SPEAKER_00: So, anyways, that's neither here nor there.
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: That's everything in relevance right now.
- 7:05SPEAKER_00: I'm not sure if you guys have anything else in the world of entertainment that's relevant at the moment.
- 7:10SPEAKER_01: Uh just recently finished up both the NBA and hockey seasons.
- 7:15SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, who won?
- 7:17SPEAKER_01: Uh, NBA went to the Knicks.
- 7:19SPEAKER_01: First one says 1973.
- 7:22SPEAKER_01: Go Knicks 73, thanks to the one and only Danhausen.
- 7:26SPEAKER_01: Very nice.
- 7:27SPEAKER_01: Danhausen, yes.
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: Is that considered cheating?
- 7:32SPEAKER_01: Nah.
- 7:33SPEAKER_00: Okay, alright.
- 7:34SPEAKER_01: Nah, it's not really cheating, but it is a fun gimmick to play.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: You are cursed.
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: It's cheating.
- 7:43SPEAKER_02: But for the Knicks, he removed the cursed.
- 7:45SPEAKER_02: But that's it's cheating because they're cheating.
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: What's that cheating?
- 7:49SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: I don't know if it's a good idea.
- 7:51SPEAKER_01: Cheating, I don't think anyone's complaining about it except maybe for Spurs fans.
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: If it wasn't in the rules before, it is now.
- 7:59SPEAKER_01: No.
- 8:01SPEAKER_01: What about for hockey?
- 8:02SPEAKER_01: Who won hockey?
- 8:03SPEAKER_01: NHL went to the Carolina Hurricanes.
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: Really?
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 8:08SPEAKER_01: It was pretty back and forth series for the first four games.
- 8:12SPEAKER_01: I mean, it was a crazy series, the first four.
- 8:15SPEAKER_01: First game, Carolina hopped out to a quick 2-0 lead, blew that, game ended.
- 8:20SPEAKER_01: I think it was four to five or something like that.
- 8:23SPEAKER_01: It was a pretty high score at the end of it for hockey.
- 8:26SPEAKER_01: Came down to like a last second goal.
- 8:28SPEAKER_01: Game two goes to overtime.
- 8:29SPEAKER_01: Carolina takes it.
- 8:30SPEAKER_01: Game three goes to double overtime after Vegas was up four-nothing.
- 8:34SPEAKER_01: Oh shoot.
- 8:35SPEAKER_01: And then somehow Carolina came back scoring three goals in 39 seconds.
- 8:40SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 8:42SPEAKER_01: After game four, things pretty well just went Carolina's way.
- 8:47SPEAKER_01: They had that game where they came back, lost it, and went, we're not losing another one, and then ran the table rest of the way.
- 8:55SPEAKER_01: Not that it wasn't a good fight, but you could tell that Vegas' goalie just wasn't up to par.
- 9:02SPEAKER_01: I mean, he gave up four plus goals in all but the last game.
- 9:09SPEAKER_01: Which doesn't exactly spell winning to me.
- 9:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 9:14SPEAKER_01: No.
- 9:15SPEAKER_01: Nick's series was pretty lopsided.
- 9:17SPEAKER_01: I mean, Spurs only won one game, so there's not a lot to say about that.
- 9:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but it was more or less like the games weren't lopsided.
- 9:25SPEAKER_02: The series may look like it was lopsided because it was at the end, but they were like winning by one or two points.
- 9:31SPEAKER_01: I think the Spurs led, I think I saw a thing, they led like 78% of the series.
- 9:37SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 9:37SPEAKER_01: And lost four to one.
- 9:40SPEAKER_00: Oh, also, speaking of Dan Housen.
- 9:42SPEAKER_00: I'm sorry, it's right now.
- 9:43SPEAKER_00: Um Crown Jewel, that's like next week, right?
- 9:47SPEAKER_01: Did you next week?
- 9:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's next week's Crown Jewel.
- 9:51SPEAKER_01: I knew it was coming up, but I don't fully know.
- 9:54SPEAKER_00: And then we have Triple Mania coming up with AAA Wrestling and uh WWE in September.
- 10:01SPEAKER_00: And WWE's actually doing a Mexico tour.
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: Oh, cool.
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: So it's gonna be pretty cool.
- 10:05SPEAKER_01: Oh SummerSlam's somewhat soon.
- 10:08SPEAKER_00: Yes, next month is SummerSlam.
- 10:11SPEAKER_00: No, Crown Jewel's and XPLE.
- 10:12SPEAKER_01: Crown Jewel's the next PLE.
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: And then we'll have SummerSlam.
- 10:15SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 10:16SPEAKER_00: Uh you best believe we're having tacos for both of those.
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: Alright.
- 10:21SPEAKER_00: And that's uh that's everything relevant.
- 10:23SPEAKER_00: I don't think I have anything else.
- 10:24SPEAKER_00: If you guys don't, again.
- 10:25SPEAKER_00: Uh Alex, anything relevant?
- 10:28SPEAKER_02: Not really.
- 10:29SPEAKER_02: No, but I do have a topic we could go for.
- 10:31SPEAKER_00: Hey, go for it, buddy.
- 10:32SPEAKER_02: Alright.
- 10:33SPEAKER_02: So I know John and all of us have heard of recent rumblings in the movie industry to where studios are now wanting to get away from the multiverse or interconnected universes.
- 10:50SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 10:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, cinematic universe as a whole.
- 10:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 10:56SPEAKER_02: Tomorrow.
- 10:58SPEAKER_00: Oh.
- 10:58SPEAKER_02: Uh-huh.
- 10:59SPEAKER_02: Oh.
- 11:00SPEAKER_02: But I don't know.
- 11:02SPEAKER_02: Open this up for debate and discussion.
- 11:04SPEAKER_02: What do you guys think?
- 11:05SPEAKER_02: Like, I see the positives, I also see the negatives.
- 11:08SPEAKER_02: But the issue is that I think we're at a point where people ju like the people who are out of touch making the movies, the pens and pencil pushers.
- 11:21SPEAKER_02: The executives just think that we all want it interconnected instead of no no no.
- 11:27SPEAKER_02: We want it interconnected if it's meant to be interconnected.
- 11:30SPEAKER_02: Not the fact that it all has to be connected.
- 11:33SPEAKER_02: It doesn't have to be the meme of Charlie Day with the board all connected.
- 11:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 11:39SPEAKER_00: Um I I think it's time to move on from cinematic universes.
- 11:46SPEAKER_00: It was so cool in 2008.
- 11:51SPEAKER_01: I assume you mean outside of like Marvel DC then.
- 11:54SPEAKER_00: I think um, well, I I don't know.
- 11:56SPEAKER_00: Because it was cool in 2008 when Iron Man was the first thing.
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: And then we went like 12 years and then we had Endgame.
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: But we're almost 20 years after that.
- 12:09SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 12:10SPEAKER_00: And and and yes, everyone knows that after Secret Wars next year, they're gonna quote unquote reboot the MCU, and it's gonna be more X-Men centered than it is uh Avengers.
- 12:21SPEAKER_00: Avengers that's cool, and it's cool if those connect, but I don't think if if they're gonna reboot the cinematic universe, I think they need to reboot how they do it.
- 12:36SPEAKER_00: I don't think that's wrong.
- 12:37SPEAKER_00: And I understand like the whole TV show thing, they it was a hit and miss, at least for Marvel, but that was the whole Bob Chapek era, and you know, Bob Iger came back and fixed it, and now he's gone again, which is cool.
- 12:51SPEAKER_00: But I think James Gunn is a good example of like, okay, if you're gonna have TV shows connected, it can be connected, but let it be its own thing.
- 13:01SPEAKER_00: Like, you don't need to do homework on Peacemaker or uh Creature Commando in order to watch Superman or Supergirl coming up or Clayface.
- 13:13SPEAKER_00: And I think what James Gunn is doing is a good step to if you're gonna have a cinematic universe, don't do it how it's been doing for the last 20 years.
- 13:23SPEAKER_00: Let's let's move on from that formula and go to something different.
- 13:28SPEAKER_00: But I also think Nintendo's being smart about saying, hey, we're not gonna have any cinematic universes.
- 13:34SPEAKER_00: Mario and Mario Galaxy, they're they're prequels and sequels to their each other, and they're just gonna have their own thing.
- 13:41SPEAKER_00: They're their own thing.
- 13:42SPEAKER_00: And then when Star Fox comes out, they're not gonna be like, oh, is Mario gonna show up at Star Fox?
- 13:47SPEAKER_00: No, he Star Fox.
- 13:48SPEAKER_00: He left to go back to his galaxy, that's his own thing.
- 13:52SPEAKER_00: And that's why and that's why they said, you know, we're not gonna have a Super Smash Brothers movie because we don't want a cinematic universe.
- 14:00SPEAKER_00: Uh but Alex, you had brought up a point that you don't need to have a cinematic universe to do Super Smash Brothers, and I I would like to know your thinking more on that because I think that's more along the lines of like, if you're gonna do it, do it different.
- 14:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah, just don't all you have to do is you don't have to make them connected at all.
- 14:18SPEAKER_02: Like these characters can just show up to do it because the whole point Smash Brothers is like the hands bringing these Nintendo's characters and Nintendo's IP to play in like a tournament style thing.
- 14:31SPEAKER_02: There's nothing that says like they're connected at all.
- 14:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 14:35SPEAKER_01: And you could even do like from the beginning of it, you could have something almost Mortal Kombat-esque where like they're in their own universes and then they just get ripped out of it.
- 14:46SPEAKER_01: Okay, yeah.
- 14:46SPEAKER_01: So it's like, well, it doesn't connect to anything.
- 14:48SPEAKER_00: And they just never bring it up in any of their movies or anything like that.
- 14:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 14:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 14:52SPEAKER_02: Or like you could do like for it'd be kind of funny if they had like a meta like at the end of a post-credit scene, like at the very end, where it's like, remember that time when it's like, nope, don't remember it at all.
- 15:06SPEAKER_02: And go on about their day.
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: Or just Luigi's like, remember that giant hand of where I was like, nope, and then that's all it is?
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: I see.
- 15:13SPEAKER_01: Or even to make it more separate.
- 15:17SPEAKER_01: I mean, if you get because right now the only ones we really have are Mario and Luigi.
- 15:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 15:22SPEAKER_01: If you get different voice actors, okay, it doesn't feel like it's the same universe then.
- 15:27SPEAKER_00: That's a good point.
- 15:29SPEAKER_01: Or artistically like change it a little bit.
- 15:32SPEAKER_01: Different animation style, even.
- 15:34SPEAKER_00: This is gonna sound really weird, but with with you talking about your concept of how Super Smash Bros.
- 15:40SPEAKER_00: could work without it being part of a universe and going away from universes.
- 15:44SPEAKER_00: I think Sylvester Stallone's The Expendables is a really good example as a concept on how to do that.
- 15:52SPEAKER_00: Because like you didn't have the Terminator and Rambo and Walker Texas Ranger and and uh the Universal Soldier.
- 16:02SPEAKER_00: Those porter, like, those characters weren't in the movie because they were just the actors that happened to play them all in one movie.
- 16:12SPEAKER_00: But like they referenced we dude, we all knew what that was.
- 16:16SPEAKER_00: Bruce Willis even showing up, like we all knew what those movies were.
- 16:20SPEAKER_01: We were watching the Terminator with Rambo, like I mean they referenced their own lines, they steal each other's famous lines.
- 16:28SPEAKER_01: Exactly, yeah.
- 16:29SPEAKER_00: Like they knew what they were doing, and then Arnold Schwarzenegger looks at uh Chuck Norris and goes, Oh, who's next?
- 16:34SPEAKER_00: Rambo.
- 16:35SPEAKER_00: Like, I think that concept is is a good concept to maybe move forward of like, hey, sure, let's have Robert Downing Jr., Chris Evans, and Sebastian Stan in a movie together where they're like heroes, but like they're not Iron Man and Winter Soldier and uh Captain America, you know.
- 16:58SPEAKER_02: You know what that sounds like?
- 17:00SPEAKER_02: It sounds like a good plot or pitch for Tropic Thunder 2.
- 17:06SPEAKER_00: Dude That'd be something dude Chris Dude.
- 17:13SPEAKER_00: I don't know, because I I just don't know how to move forward because again, we've we've been hearing a lot of stuff in the industry that studios are thinking about going away from universes, but it's like how do you how do you make that transition from almost two generations of humans that are conditioned to be like this is what movies are?
- 17:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 17:38SPEAKER_00: Because another big thing is that people are like, oh, there's no originals anymore, there's only sequels or universes, which isn't true.
- 17:47SPEAKER_00: The last five years, if you look at the statistics, the last five years, there have been more original IP ever created in the history of cinema, but people don't know that because we're conditioned to know only IP that we know, such as any game system, popular games of those like God of War or Halo, and then you have Marvel, Star Wars, DC, and Game of Thrones.
- 18:17SPEAKER_00: And that's what that's what people they're like, oh, another another Predator movie?
- 18:21SPEAKER_00: Gosh, it's like, can they come with something original?
- 18:24SPEAKER_00: They did.
- 18:24SPEAKER_00: You just didn't watch it because you I like that predator movie, though.
- 18:28SPEAKER_00: Oh no, I freaking I freaking love that movie.
- 18:30SPEAKER_00: But it's like it's like you, and if you look at the bots offices, it's like, of course they're gonna make more predator movies because it goes up where they're they're reasonable we've got a billion fast and furious pages.
- 18:43SPEAKER_00: Exactly, because they keep going up.
- 18:44SPEAKER_00: It's like can't Vin Diesel make something original?
- 18:47SPEAKER_00: He did.
- 18:47SPEAKER_00: Nobody watched it.
- 18:49SPEAKER_02: No, they did it because he's working on the fourth one.
- 18:51SPEAKER_00: No, I was talking about Bloodsport.
- 18:53SPEAKER_02: I was talking about Reddick.
- 18:55SPEAKER_02: Reddick.
- 18:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, hey, exactly.
- 18:56SPEAKER_00: But you understood the IP.
- 18:58SPEAKER_00: You didn't know about the other IP.
- 19:00SPEAKER_01: Well, I think I did the trailer when that first came out, and I just didn't no one saw it.
- 19:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but Bloodsport is a uh comic book character.
- 19:11SPEAKER_00: It is, but it's an independent comic book character.
- 19:14SPEAKER_02: Is it?
- 19:14SPEAKER_02: Because it's a life Rob Lifel creation.
- 19:17SPEAKER_00: It's independent.
- 19:18SPEAKER_02: Is it?
- 19:19SPEAKER_02: Because I thought it was Dark Horse or is it image?
- 19:21SPEAKER_00: It might be image.
- 19:23SPEAKER_02: One of the big studios.
- 19:25SPEAKER_00: I have a computer, tablet, and a phone right in front of me, and I'm not looking it up.
- 19:29SPEAKER_01: I know.
- 19:29SPEAKER_00: So we'll just let the audience tell us we're idiots.
- 19:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, in the comments.
- 19:34SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 19:34SPEAKER_00: But even then it's like, why can't Vin Diesel make anything original?
- 19:37SPEAKER_00: He did.
- 19:38SPEAKER_00: And you didn't watch it.
- 19:39SPEAKER_00: Last Winch Hunter, which they are making a second one finally, but no one saw that.
- 19:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you know nothing about that, Cody, do you?
- 19:48SPEAKER_02: It wasn't it was alright.
- 19:50SPEAKER_02: It wasn't that.
- 19:51SPEAKER_00: Oh, but it was okay.
- 19:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 19:53SPEAKER_00: Babylon Babylon AD, which is another cloud.
- 19:56SPEAKER_00: I love that one.
- 19:58SPEAKER_00: But anyways, all this to say, just how do how do we how do we move forward?
- 20:03SPEAKER_00: How do we recondition people to look at all IP instead of just familiar IP?
- 20:09SPEAKER_00: I think it's the biggest thing that's killing trying to get out of the cinematic universe.
- 20:14SPEAKER_01: Because I was gonna try and argue this year we've had some stuff that is done super well, but then if you think about it, it's like, okay, Backrooms technically isn't an original IP.
- 20:24SPEAKER_01: It's an original movie because we hadn't had a movie, but it had pre-existing stuff on the internet.
- 20:30SPEAKER_01: It's a creepypasta, right?
- 20:31SPEAKER_01: I don't know about King Pixel.
- 20:33SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 20:34SPEAKER_01: I don't know fully about Obsession, but I'm guessing that also had something already going.
- 20:38SPEAKER_00: No, that that's original.
- 20:39SPEAKER_00: That one is original there.
- 20:40SPEAKER_01: That's what we're saying.
- 20:41SPEAKER_01: So, like there's been things that have done well.
- 20:44SPEAKER_01: I mean, I was about to point out uh Markiplier's movie, but again, that's based on a game that he enjoyed.
- 20:51SPEAKER_01: So the game already existed.
- 20:53SPEAKER_01: That's an already existing IP.
- 20:55SPEAKER_01: Now, some of these are smaller, maybe not as well known, and are doing great, which may be, okay, if we're not fully original, take a smaller IP and use it.
- 21:05SPEAKER_01: Sinners.
- 21:06SPEAKER_01: One of the higher fully original.
- 21:09SPEAKER_00: Sinners is a great example of like, dude, just go watch an original movie.
- 21:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 21:13SPEAKER_00: It won how many Academy Awards?
- 21:15SPEAKER_01: I don't actually know if it won't many.
- 21:18SPEAKER_01: Four or five?
- 21:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 21:19SPEAKER_01: Wasn't a crazy number.
- 21:20SPEAKER_01: It won a decent amount.
- 21:21SPEAKER_00: For an R-rated horror movie?
- 21:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 21:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 21:24SPEAKER_00: And then also being nominated for movie of the year, like I'm saying horror very lightly.
- 21:31SPEAKER_01: I don't know if that's a horror.
- 21:33SPEAKER_02: I would say it's I would say it's more horror than anything.
- 21:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 21:38SPEAKER_01: Is it really?
- 21:38SPEAKER_01: I figured it was more like I haven't watched.
- 21:41SPEAKER_01: Okay, then the quiet it was more of like a suspense thriller than what I would consider a horror.
- 21:49SPEAKER_00: No, I I'd call it horror.
- 21:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 21:52SPEAKER_02: Like if anything, uh it's a horror drama horror.
- 21:57SPEAKER_00: If anything, it's just too giant as a floor.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: Water of freaking Michael B.
- 22:02SPEAKER_00: Jordan, that's what it is.
- 22:06SPEAKER_01: Man.
- 22:07SPEAKER_01: We've clearly had some original IP that's doing well.
- 22:11SPEAKER_01: The problem is some of them don't get enough advertisement, which could be a thing that hurts, but the other part is that yeah, a lot of people just it was not something they look at, they just ignore it.
- 22:23SPEAKER_01: They don't care.
- 22:24SPEAKER_01: Then at that point, and that's part of the problem.
- 22:26SPEAKER_01: Well, at that point is stop caring unless they already know it, and the only way to get into it is to watch it.
- 22:34SPEAKER_02: Well, uh brings up the next point then.
- 22:36SPEAKER_02: Is it the actual movie's fault, or is it how the production or studio is marketing the movie?
- 22:43SPEAKER_02: Because one of my favorite movies of all time is John Carter of Mars.
- 22:47SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 22:48SPEAKER_02: That movie was a complete flop because Disney didn't know how to market it.
- 22:52SPEAKER_00: Same thing with uh Treasure Planet.
- 22:55SPEAKER_00: No, not that.
- 22:56SPEAKER_02: Strange World.
- 22:57SPEAKER_00: No, the Tom Cruise one with Emily Blunt.
- 22:59SPEAKER_02: It was originally Lived I Repeat.
- 23:01SPEAKER_02: Well, see, that's the problem.
- 23:04SPEAKER_00: It was originally called Lived I Repeat.
- 23:06SPEAKER_00: I think it's now called like uh I'm gonna look it up because it's because like you want to talk about a prime example of a A-rated freaking fantastic movie.
- 23:15SPEAKER_02: Great sci-fi movie.
- 23:16SPEAKER_00: Great side, great everything, great acting, but um just horrible, horrible marketing, which is what made it ultimately cause its downfall.
- 23:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 23:28SPEAKER_00: And uh let's see if I can find because again, I had it was like tomorrow something.
- 23:33SPEAKER_00: Edge of Tomorrow.
- 23:34SPEAKER_02: Edge of Tomorrow.
- 23:35SPEAKER_00: Which like again, I get why they ended up with that name, but it had like four different titles.
- 23:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 23:40SPEAKER_02: Edge of Tomorrow also, I don't unless you watched the movie, you would have no idea what it was.
- 23:44SPEAKER_00: Well, and on top of that, I get that confused with Day After Tomorrow, which is a completely different movie.
- 23:50SPEAKER_02: Well, there's also another one on Prime that's called the Tomorrow War with Chris Pratt.
- 23:56SPEAKER_02: That kind of deals with the same concept.
- 23:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so it's like, but if you just called it how how much does that title really just kick, live, die, repeat?
- 24:07SPEAKER_00: I that's a good title.
- 24:10SPEAKER_00: I'm sold already.
- 24:10SPEAKER_00: I'm sold already with that.
- 24:12SPEAKER_01: Unless they like tested it and it wasn't doing well, like on a bigger scale, but I don't know how much the how do you test something like that?
- 24:21SPEAKER_01: You just ask, I mean, the only thing I can think of is you go out, you ask people, hey, if this is the title of a movie, would you be interested?
- 24:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but another rule of thumb is that the title, though it is a marketing point and a selling point, shouldn't be your main focus on whether or not something's selling.
- 24:35SPEAKER_01: But if like it didn't do well with like whatever testing they may have done, I don't even know if they did.
- 24:41SPEAKER_01: That's my only thought, though, is maybe they did testing.
- 24:44SPEAKER_01: They didn't get a lot of like interest and they went, So, hey, what about this?
- 24:49SPEAKER_01: And people went, oh, that sounds interesting.
- 24:51SPEAKER_02: I remember this movie being The Edge of Tomorrow up until it hit uh at home release, and that's when they changed the name.
- 24:59SPEAKER_00: See, so I remember the opposite.
- 25:01SPEAKER_00: I remember when I first saw the trailer said Lived I Repeat, and then the second trailer I saw it said Edge of Tomorrow.
- 25:06SPEAKER_00: Oh, see, I did it myself.
- 25:09SPEAKER_00: I I think this I think just this discussion alone is the prime example of what you guys had said, which is marketing is a big deal.
- 25:15SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 25:16SPEAKER_01: Marketing on a lot of movies lately has not been good.
- 25:19SPEAKER_00: It hasn't, and it's so weird.
- 25:20SPEAKER_00: Well, the and then talk about the algorithm.
- 25:22SPEAKER_00: How many times um what was it, Blue Beetle?
- 25:25SPEAKER_00: I saw so many trailers for Blue Beetle and Shazam 2, and when I was talking to you, Cody, around that time period, you were like, I haven't seen a single trailer.
- 25:32SPEAKER_00: And I was like, how?
- 25:34SPEAKER_00: Because I I know I'm into movies, but you're into DC.
- 25:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 25:38SPEAKER_00: And for some reason, my algorithm was showing me that stuff, but yours wasn't.
- 25:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 25:43SPEAKER_01: And I think that's part of it, I mean some of it is that like any streaming stars you have that like you're gonna have ads on.
- 25:50SPEAKER_01: Now obviously people part of it is if people pay for no ads, they're never gonna see the trailers because that's where they show them is on the ads for stuff.
- 25:58SPEAKER_01: So if you're paying for no ads, you're never gonna see a trailer for it.
- 26:01SPEAKER_01: But even outside of that, it seems like and I get it, they're only showing their stuff, but it's like if I primarily watch Hulu, I'm not gonna get trailers for a bunch of this DC stuff or a Sony product or something.
- 26:18SPEAKER_01: It's like I'm gonna get Hulu or Disney stuff or whatever's under that umbrella.
- 26:24SPEAKER_01: That's interesting.
- 26:25SPEAKER_00: Even even then though, like, even if I am watching like Disney Plus, I'm like, I just do things on Hulu, it's like cool.
- 26:31SPEAKER_00: Even then it's like, okay, let capture me then.
- 26:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 26:35SPEAKER_00: You know?
- 26:36SPEAKER_01: See, I think one of the big YouTube algorithm problem comes down to, well, sometimes like right now, my out for some reason, my ad algorithm, and it's the stupidest one I've ever had, I get more ads for socket fiber, which if people don't know, that's who I work for.
- 26:54SPEAKER_00: Well, that's probably why, because it's always you're always talking about it.
- 26:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but even if I don't for like two weeks, that's still like all I get for ads is come over to socket fiber.
- 27:04SPEAKER_01: I'm like, I have you.
- 27:06SPEAKER_00: What about you?
- 27:06SPEAKER_00: What were you saying, Alex?
- 27:07SPEAKER_02: Well, I was gonna circle back around to uh ending the universes and a prime example that I thought of to where I don't think they needed to be a universe, and they tried to make it one and smash it together, and it didn't work.
- 27:24SPEAKER_02: Universal Pictures tried to smash together the monster verse again.
- 27:28SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, where they try to reboot it.
- 27:31SPEAKER_01: What was it?
- 27:32SPEAKER_02: Tom Cruise's Tom Cruise's the Mummy, but the first one was supposed to be Dracula Untold.
- 27:37SPEAKER_01: Did anyone lose Luke Wilson?
- 27:40SPEAKER_01: Oh, nope, not the one I was thinking.
- 27:42SPEAKER_01: I was thinking of the Dracula movie with uh James McAvoy.
- 27:47SPEAKER_01: Luke Evans, I think.
- 27:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, still not the one I was thinking of.
- 27:50SPEAKER_01: I was thinking of the Dracula movie with James McAvoy.
- 27:53SPEAKER_01: So I never watched it, but I didn't know if it was part of that or not.
- 27:56SPEAKER_00: What was crazy about the more recent one?
- 27:59SPEAKER_00: Sort of.
- 28:00SPEAKER_00: What was crazy about that monster verse, and here, let me show you this picture.
- 28:03SPEAKER_00: They released this picture before the mummy even came out.
- 28:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 28:08SPEAKER_00: You have Tom Cruise for the Mummy.
- 28:11SPEAKER_00: You have Johnny Depp as the invisible man, which would have been great.
- 28:16SPEAKER_01: Well, sort of the invisible man.
- 28:18SPEAKER_00: No, it was it was that it was different.
- 28:20SPEAKER_00: Whole different video.
- 28:20SPEAKER_00: This wasn't.
- 28:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Russell Crowe.
- 28:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Russell Crowe as Dr.
- 28:25SPEAKER_00: Jackal and Mr.
- 28:26SPEAKER_00: Hyde.
- 28:26SPEAKER_00: Uh I think this was supposed to be Wolfman.
- 28:29SPEAKER_01: Who is it?
- 28:29SPEAKER_00: I can't remember who that is.
- 28:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I've never seen him before.
- 28:32SPEAKER_00: And then you had here's a better picture, and then I don't know who this actress is, but uh I forgot who she was supposed to be.
- 28:39SPEAKER_00: But like The Mummy.
- 28:40SPEAKER_00: The oh yeah, that is the mummy.
- 28:42SPEAKER_00: So the that was the problem with Universal, because they were like, hey, here's this picture, we're rebooting the Dark Verse, it's gonna be awesome.
- 28:49SPEAKER_00: And and hey, you know what?
- 28:51SPEAKER_00: I I loved it all.
- 28:53SPEAKER_00: But yeah, they they sprinted before they could even crawl.
- 28:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 28:58SPEAKER_00: And then I've never I've never finished the mummy movie with Tom Cruise.
- 29:02SPEAKER_00: Not because I think it's a bad movie, just it it got interrupted, I never went back to it.
- 29:06SPEAKER_00: But I mean, I heard it was not well received.
- 29:11SPEAKER_00: I was enjoying it, but I never finished it.
- 29:14SPEAKER_02: So they tried to do the universe stuff instead of making it a standalone, and it should have been a standalone.
- 29:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 29:21SPEAKER_02: Like they somehow smashed Russell Crowe's Jekyll and Hyde because they had to be a few.
- 29:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I saw that scene.
- 29:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 29:26SPEAKER_00: It's a touch screen, you're fine.
- 29:28SPEAKER_02: They had to like smash anyway, it should have never been a universe, but that was a perfect example of like if it doesn't need to, don't do it.
- 29:36SPEAKER_02: Like that didn't need to.
- 29:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they could have been standalone movies.
- 29:40SPEAKER_02: 100%.
- 29:40SPEAKER_00: I think that's a good point.
- 29:42SPEAKER_02: And if say even if you, for instance, wanted to do them in a universe, and you did them all standalones, they've all had their one standalone movie.
- 29:52SPEAKER_02: You can then do a Jekyll and Hyde movie with Russell Crowe.
- 29:55SPEAKER_02: And then, since you already tried to make him the bringer together of all these, then you could do it.
- 30:01SPEAKER_02: But like I wouldn't suggest it.
- 30:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because I mean, have we ever really had a because I mean I know we have obviously the old classic monster movies, but it was never like a universe.
- 30:12SPEAKER_01: It was just them.
- 30:15SPEAKER_02: Universal considers them, like all the old ones, taking place in the same world.
- 30:21SPEAKER_01: But like, did it if you watch them, does it feel like No, no, so I can see like if you want to say, okay, it takes place in the same universe, sure, you could do that with those.
- 30:30SPEAKER_01: They don't necessarily have to interconnect to just be like, no, they're in the same universe.
- 30:35SPEAKER_00: No, and I think I think that's what I was just saying, like that's what should have happened.
- 30:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 30:39SPEAKER_00: But then not I would have loved to have seen Johnny Depp as the Invisible Man.
- 30:42SPEAKER_00: I think that would be freaking awesome.
- 30:43SPEAKER_00: You know who did it right?
- 30:46SPEAKER_00: Have you ever seen the movie Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein?
- 30:50SPEAKER_01: No, but I'm not gonna lie, I don't think I've ever watched anything Abbott and Costello.
- 30:54SPEAKER_00: Okay, that's on the next list.
- 30:55SPEAKER_00: That's that's on the list.
- 30:57SPEAKER_01: I know so hilarious.
- 31:00SPEAKER_01: Good.
- 31:01SPEAKER_00: So good.
- 31:02SPEAKER_00: Who's on first?
- 31:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I know they do.
- 31:04SPEAKER_01: I think that's the only thing I've seen and good.
- 31:07SPEAKER_00: So when Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein, um they that's what the title is.
- 31:15SPEAKER_00: However, Dracula and Wolfman are in it too, and they are very much involved with the story, and at the very, very, very end, and it is hilarious, the invisible man shows up, and you just see a cigarette coming up, puff, puff, and then back down, and they freak out, and like that's how the movie ends.
- 31:35SPEAKER_00: It's not a universe movie.
- 31:38SPEAKER_00: It's Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein.
- 31:40SPEAKER_00: They just happen to be in in shenanigans with Dracula, Wolfman, and then the Invisible Man.
- 31:47SPEAKER_00: Who's probably there the whole time?
- 31:49SPEAKER_00: Who was probably well that was the joke was that he was.
- 31:52SPEAKER_00: So it's like it's like, yeah, make make a movie, have fun.
- 31:57SPEAKER_00: But I think again, like what I was saying about expendables, Abba Costello is the expendables of monster movies.
- 32:03SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 32:05SPEAKER_00: They had those in there because it was good and they made it work and it was relevant, but they didn't force it like they're doing now with like Fast and Furious and stuff like that.
- 32:14SPEAKER_02: Well, what they tried to do was, whenever they tried to interconnect them and force all that, they wanted to lead up to a reboot of the Monster Squad.
- 32:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 32:24SPEAKER_02: Is what they were trying to do.
- 32:25SPEAKER_02: And that would have never worked anyway.
- 32:27SPEAKER_01: No.
- 32:28SPEAKER_01: But I think if it's a thing like Marvel or DC, something that clearly already has an established universe to it, and you're just turning it into a movie or a TV show.
- 32:42SPEAKER_01: Now, a fully for keep uh TV and movie not super interconnected.
- 32:49SPEAKER_01: If it has a few Easter eggs, sure.
- 32:51SPEAKER_01: I am not trying to keep up with as much stuff as like what Marvel was doing at one point with all of the TV shows, because that was too much.
- 32:59SPEAKER_01: But in general, for your movies, if you want to have those interconnected, I don't have a problem with that.
- 33:04SPEAKER_01: Those IPs already are that.
- 33:06SPEAKER_01: But yeah, things like the monster universe or any like some of these other ones they've attempted, like, if it doesn't need to be a multiversal thing, why are we doing it?
- 33:16SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 33:17SPEAKER_02: That's I think the one that I do like is Spider-Man right now, though.
- 33:21SPEAKER_02: I do like it.
- 33:25SPEAKER_02: The animated one.
- 33:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but that's it.
- 33:28SPEAKER_00: But that's supposed to be a multiverse thing.
- 33:30SPEAKER_00: It's literally called Spider-Man into the multiverse.
- 33:32SPEAKER_02: I'm just saying that I'm just saying personally, the one I like right now.
- 33:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, well, that still goes back to my like Marvel already has that established as a thing.
- 33:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we're just turning it into a movie now.
- 33:43SPEAKER_00: But even then, even though yeah, it's called Spider-Man into the multiverse, it's not about the MCU or the Sonyverse or anything like that.
- 33:50SPEAKER_00: It's its own property.
- 33:52SPEAKER_00: And do like we said, do they mention things?
- 33:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's like, oh, don't forget we started with Doctor Stranger on Earth 9999999.
- 34:00SPEAKER_00: It's like, aha, that's funny.
- 34:01SPEAKER_00: But it was like, it was just like a quick, a quick whip, and then nothing to do with it.
- 34:07SPEAKER_02: Sorry, did you say whip?
- 34:09SPEAKER_00: Whip.
- 34:10SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 34:10SPEAKER_02: Whip.
- 34:12SPEAKER_00: We said the same thing.
- 34:13SPEAKER_00: Anyways.
- 34:13SPEAKER_00: Whip.
- 34:14SPEAKER_00: I mean, I mean, like, well, okay, speaking of whip, like, look at um the crossover with Family Guy and The Simpsons.
- 34:22SPEAKER_00: You know?
- 34:22SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, that's but like, but let's think.
- 34:24SPEAKER_00: Do we do what about crossovers?
- 34:26SPEAKER_00: Does that count?
- 34:27SPEAKER_00: Like Aliens versus Predator?
- 34:29SPEAKER_00: It originally was not part of the Aliens or the Predator IP, but because of this whole universal thing, a lot of pop culture people were like, I don't get it.
- 34:38SPEAKER_00: How is this its own thing but not connected?
- 34:40SPEAKER_00: It has both the Predator and Alien in it.
- 34:42SPEAKER_00: So now both the Predator and Alien movies have both referenced AVP, even though it was just its own thing and it always works.
- 34:51SPEAKER_02: You're missing the other property that's in that.
- 34:54SPEAKER_00: Blade Runner?
- 34:55SPEAKER_02: There you go.
- 34:56SPEAKER_00: Okay, but that's That's in that?
- 34:58SPEAKER_02: Well, actually, no, no, no.
- 34:59SPEAKER_02: Waylon Utah.
- 35:00SPEAKER_02: So Blade Runner, like Alien takes place, and then like Blade Runner is supposed to like take place somewhere in the world.
- 35:07SPEAKER_00: I would love to talk about this with you.
- 35:08SPEAKER_00: It's a lot.
- 35:09SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 35:09SPEAKER_00: But that's a good example though, how like, yes, it didn't have to be.
- 35:12SPEAKER_00: Alien and Blade Runner do take place in the same universe, but they have those two stories have nothing to do with each other.
- 35:19SPEAKER_02: Nope.
- 35:19SPEAKER_00: Do you see Wayland Utani in Blade Runner?
- 35:23SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 35:23SPEAKER_00: Do you see an engineer in Blade Runner 2?
- 35:26SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 35:26SPEAKER_00: In the first Alien movie, do you see people's names and businesses from Blade Runner?
- 35:31SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 35:31SPEAKER_00: That's it.
- 35:32SPEAKER_00: But you gotta really look at the screen to like read it and see what you're doing.
- 35:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, really?
- 35:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's a pick at all.
- 35:38SPEAKER_00: It's like East an actual Easter egg.
- 35:41SPEAKER_00: Like how in Spaceballs you see the Millennium Falcon.
- 35:44SPEAKER_00: Okay?
- 35:46SPEAKER_00: Is it in the same universe as Star Wars?
- 35:48SPEAKER_00: Sure, George Lucas said it was, and that's why the Millennium Falcon was there.
- 35:52SPEAKER_00: But it it's a spoof movie, has nothing to do with Star Wars.
- 35:55SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah.
- 35:56SPEAKER_01: I think that's where, like, I could see, you know, if they decided to say, yeah, Alien and Predator take place in the same universe.
- 36:04SPEAKER_01: Kind of like the classic monster stuff where like it's all in the same universe.
- 36:07SPEAKER_01: It's like, well, yeah, it's they're both outer space.
- 36:09SPEAKER_01: Sure, if you want to say they're in the same universe, I'm not gonna question it.
- 36:13SPEAKER_00: AVP takes place on Earth.
- 36:14SPEAKER_01: Well, yeah, I meant like or AVP takes place.
- 36:17SPEAKER_01: We're talking about good movies as the separate ones beforehand.
- 36:21SPEAKER_01: If you were just like they're in the same universe, I'd be like, okay, I don't really have a reason to say they're not.
- 36:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 36:26SPEAKER_01: Like, it's outer space, yeah, there's billions of planets, sure.
- 36:30SPEAKER_01: I think AVP and them now referencing it as much as they do is probably the problem.
- 36:35SPEAKER_01: Instead of just being like, obviously they made AVP, but if they left them where they just gave you little hints, it'd be like, okay, yeah, I still believe it, but like they don't really cross over that much.
- 36:46SPEAKER_02: I thought they gave up referencing AVP.
- 36:49SPEAKER_00: No, no, it's still going.
- 36:52SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 36:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 36:54SPEAKER_00: I did like Predator Badlands though, because Weyland Utani was in Predator Badlands and the synths were there, but it wasn't like Alien or any or Blade Runner or anything like that.
- 37:05SPEAKER_00: It was like they were just characters in the story.
- 37:08SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 37:09SPEAKER_00: Like Weyland Utani himself, you didn't you didn't need to know anything about Predator, and you didn't need to know anything about Alien.
- 37:16SPEAKER_00: You could go inside watching Alien Badlands, not knowing a thing.
- 37:20SPEAKER_00: Predator Badlands.
- 37:20SPEAKER_00: That's what I said, Predator Badlands.
- 37:22SPEAKER_00: You could go inside Predator Badlands without knowing a thing about any of the previous IP and watch it alone and be like, cool, Wayland Utani, don't know who that is, but they seem pretty wild, and this is what a Yaucha is.
- 37:35SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 37:36SPEAKER_00: I think, but that's again, what about universe like that, where like it's in the universe, but each movie's like its own standalone?
- 37:43SPEAKER_00: I don't think that's a problem.
- 37:44SPEAKER_02: That's yeah, that's not the issue that we're talking about.
- 37:47SPEAKER_02: What we're talking about is like setting them in this universe.
- 37:49SPEAKER_02: No, yeah, but I'm saying what forcing them to interact.
- 37:52SPEAKER_00: I'm saying, like, what if that's how we get out of that by being like, yeah, it's the same world, but they're its own standalone.
- 38:00SPEAKER_00: Because that's kind of how the MCU started.
- 38:01SPEAKER_00: You had Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, Thor, and then Avengers.
- 38:07SPEAKER_00: Avengers they came together, and then it was like Iron Man 2.
- 38:10SPEAKER_01: You had a little thing, because was it the first Iron Man where we see Cap Shield, or is that a later one?
- 38:16SPEAKER_01: Okay, because I know he used it as like a thing the whole thing.
- 38:19SPEAKER_00: So that's the that was the second one, but tech technically you do see it in the first one, but it's like in the background, background.
- 38:27SPEAKER_01: Okay, so yeah, if they want to throw in little things like that where like you don't really see it, but it's there to reference it for those people that want to really spot the Easter eggs, go for it.
- 38:36SPEAKER_00: Well, like, and then back then it was either Nick Fury or Colson that was the only connectors, but like they they were their own thing.
- 38:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 38:43SPEAKER_00: But then but then now it's like if I see a Guardians of the Galaxy movie, I better see 50 things from other MCU movies in it.
- 38:51SPEAKER_00: And it's just like why I stopped.
- 38:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's like, no, can we just stop that?
- 38:55SPEAKER_00: Well, yeah, because people like you stop being interested, and people like me are I'm still watching it because I'm just always going to, but boy, am I getting really tired of it.
- 39:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 39:05SPEAKER_00: I'm not as hyped about it as I was before.
- 39:07SPEAKER_00: Now, that is why I'm hyped about Doomsday and Secret Wars, because apparently supposed to end it, but again, this conversation's like, how do you end it and how do you progress?
- 39:16SPEAKER_00: Is it like Predator where each one is its own individual thing, even though they're all connected?
- 39:21SPEAKER_02: I don't think you do any of that.
- 39:22SPEAKER_02: I think you have standalones from here on out to reset and then maybe put like it's in the same universe, but they're never gonna see.
- 39:33SPEAKER_00: That's my problem with the reboot of the MCU.
- 39:36SPEAKER_00: Because I was like, hey, let's do what we did before.
- 39:38SPEAKER_00: Let's have a Wolverine movie, let's have a Beast movie or something like that, and then maybe we'll have X-Men Apocalypse as like the first Avengers movie we got.
- 39:49SPEAKER_00: But no, they're they're making an X-Men movie with all the characters in it, and I'm like, that's not bad because we had that in the early 2000s, but because we're continuing this universe, it's like, is that really the best idea?
- 40:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 40:02SPEAKER_01: I guess the question is, are enough of the X-Men well known enough to have a standalone movie?
- 40:08SPEAKER_00: I think the original six are, yes.
- 40:12unknown: Beast?
- 40:15SPEAKER_02: What original six?
- 40:16SPEAKER_00: Beast, Storm, Angel, Cyclops, um, Iceman, and uh Professor X.
- 40:24SPEAKER_02: Uh Angel's not that interesting.
- 40:26SPEAKER_01: I was gonna say the other question is are some of them gonna be interesting?
- 40:29SPEAKER_01: Also, I feel like while it wasn't a technically Professor X standalone, I mean, I feel like X-Men First Class kind of set up most of his backstory.
- 40:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 40:40SPEAKER_01: Now I don't know if that's connected to the stuff now, but I feel like that was probably the best way to do Professor X, because that's mostly what he does.
- 40:49SPEAKER_00: Well, so the X-Men those X-Men movies with like Patrick Stewart are not connected to the MCU.
- 40:55SPEAKER_01: You mean James McAvoy?
- 40:57SPEAKER_01: McAlboy.
- 40:58SPEAKER_00: Well, well, no, the James McAvoy ones are connected to the Patrick Stewart ones.
- 41:02SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 41:03SPEAKER_00: But those those movies are their own things.
- 41:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 41:06SPEAKER_00: I like that.
- 41:08SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 41:08SPEAKER_00: That's cool.
- 41:09SPEAKER_01: But but like But if it did something like that in the MCU, it feels like it's too connected to the already.
- 41:16SPEAKER_00: And I understand those people are gonna be in Doomsday.
- 41:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 41:20SPEAKER_00: But again, if you're gonna reset everything, including like the Fox Cinematic Universe, then uh okay, sure.
- 41:27SPEAKER_00: Like I get that pass.
- 41:28SPEAKER_00: Like, sure, bring in everyone from the Fox Cinematic Universe, bring everyone in from the Disney universe, let's have them a giant showdown, let's kill them all, let's have Battle Earth that Doomsday creates, let's have Secret Wars, let's destroy that, fix it all, start again.
- 41:43SPEAKER_00: Where do we go from there?
- 41:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 41:45SPEAKER_01: And that's and I mean, I don't think there's a good answer.
- 41:49SPEAKER_01: You're gonna upset people either way.
- 41:50SPEAKER_01: You have people that are gonna want to keep it as is, you're gonna have people like us that are like, we need more standalone stuff.
- 41:57SPEAKER_01: I think the problem with X-Men is I don't know how many of those would be good standalones because so many of those are so just connected to being X-Men.
- 42:06SPEAKER_01: That's fair.
- 42:07SPEAKER_01: Wolverine has enough outside of it, it makes sense, but like, how many standalone beast comics do we actually have?
- 42:14SPEAKER_01: Or is he just an X-Men?
- 42:16SPEAKER_00: That's fair.
- 42:17SPEAKER_00: That's actually fair.
- 42:18SPEAKER_01: There's not that many where he's a standalone.
- 42:19SPEAKER_01: Like Gambit has a few.
- 42:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, not very much.
- 42:23SPEAKER_01: I think that might be the problem with them going to X-Men, is it's just a group.
- 42:27SPEAKER_01: There's not enough standalone stuff to really do standalones.
- 42:32SPEAKER_00: I also understand that everything being made now is actually not catered to me or us.
- 42:38SPEAKER_00: It's catered to like teenagers or younger.
- 42:42SPEAKER_00: Because I was 14 when Iron Man came out, and now I'm 32.
- 42:49SPEAKER_00: And they hooked me when I was 14.
- 42:52SPEAKER_00: Now I'm 32 with my own kids.
- 42:55SPEAKER_00: We're sick of it.
- 42:56SPEAKER_00: I understand that now they need to cater to like my kids now.
- 42:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 43:00SPEAKER_00: Because they need to hook them for 20 years too.
- 43:04SPEAKER_00: But so I I I think you're right.
- 43:06SPEAKER_00: I think even myself is going to be very upset with whatever they do.
- 43:10SPEAKER_00: But I think that's because that's our age mentality there.
- 43:13SPEAKER_00: We're really like, because I know a lot of people are upset about Superman and how that was, and like James Gunn and what he's doing, but I'm like, he's not Superman was great.
- 43:21SPEAKER_00: Oh, it was great, it was great, yes.
- 43:23SPEAKER_00: But I'm like, he's he's not he's not catering to our our generation.
- 43:28SPEAKER_00: He's getting the next generation.
- 43:30SPEAKER_00: Our gener unfortunately, I think that's something we need to realize.
- 43:32SPEAKER_00: Our generation doesn't matter to the movie industry.
- 43:35SPEAKER_01: No, we're in that gap where they know we're just gonna watch it anyways because we're interested in the IP, or we just saw a random trailer for even if it's a standalone thing and went, oh that looks cool, I'll go watch it.
- 43:47SPEAKER_00: And that's why that's why like Mario or like Despicable Me and Minions are doing so good.
- 43:51SPEAKER_00: I think Despicable Me and Minions is a perfect example on how to keep things separate but connected.
- 43:57SPEAKER_00: The minions movies are their own thing.
- 44:00SPEAKER_00: And Despicable Me is their own thing.
- 44:01SPEAKER_00: Oh, wasn't Gru in the Menius movie?
- 44:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and one.
- 44:04SPEAKER_00: He cameoed in the first one, then he had the rise of Grew.
- 44:07SPEAKER_00: Now we don't care about that.
- 44:09SPEAKER_00: Now you have Despicable Me.
- 44:10SPEAKER_00: And they're both making multiple, it's a multi-billion dollar franchise.
- 44:15SPEAKER_00: Both of them are.
- 44:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 44:16SPEAKER_00: That's it.
- 44:17SPEAKER_00: You know what?
- 44:17SPEAKER_00: That's the answer.
- 44:18SPEAKER_00: Despicable Me is the answer.
- 44:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 44:20SPEAKER_00: There it is.
- 44:21SPEAKER_00: We good job, Alex.
- 44:22SPEAKER_00: We solved it.
- 44:24SPEAKER_00: Did it.
- 44:25SPEAKER_01: Obviously, I think as far as something like Marvel or DC, there's no good answer.
- 44:31SPEAKER_01: Anything outside of that, though, if it does not need to be a grand universe, just stop.
- 44:37SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 44:37SPEAKER_00: I agree.
- 44:38SPEAKER_01: Those ones are a hard stop doing it.
- 44:41SPEAKER_01: Marvel DC is gonna be harder because they've already, again, in their original IPs for comics, they've already established that, so it's harder to get away from it.
- 44:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 44:50SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 44:51SPEAKER_00: What about you?
- 44:52SPEAKER_00: Final thoughts, Alex?
- 44:54SPEAKER_02: Uh I think it's more or less they needed to focus on standalone stories and doing sequels from the standalones and uh take some time off from interconnecting everything.
- 45:07SPEAKER_01: I can agree, yeah.
- 45:08SPEAKER_01: Get back to like original Marvel stuff where we had like just a cat movie, they all come together, and then you can do some step stuff again, and oh, here's another thing, come back together.
- 45:18SPEAKER_02: Even like outside of superheroes, like even just sequels on regular movies.
- 45:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but like But have it be its own thing.
- 45:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah, have it be its own thing.
- 45:29SPEAKER_00: I think I and again, I know I keep saying this, but I do you think Predator is a prime example of that?
- 45:33SPEAKER_00: They're doing are is every Predator movie an A plus movie?
- 45:36SPEAKER_00: Absolutely not.
- 45:37SPEAKER_00: But are they still making them and is it still a growing franchise?
- 45:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 45:41SPEAKER_00: People thought it was a dead franchise until a new original Predator idea came out, which was Prey.
- 45:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and that brought it back.
- 45:51SPEAKER_01: I said part of it being dead though was we didn't have anything after AVP2 for We did, it just sucked.
- 45:56SPEAKER_00: Did we?
- 45:57SPEAKER_01: We had Predators.
- 46:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Predators, which was really good with Adrian Brody, and then you had the Predator, which was probably the biggest disappointment.
- 46:06SPEAKER_01: I didn't even know that ever came out.
- 46:07SPEAKER_01: Well, that's honestly.
- 46:08SPEAKER_02: That's the one where isn't that the one where at the end of the movie they have a Predator Iron Man suit pop up?
- 46:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's what I thought.
- 46:16SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 46:16SPEAKER_00: Yes, okay.
- 46:17SPEAKER_00: That's pretty cool, actually.
- 46:18SPEAKER_00: But yeah, no, that movie kind of sucked.
- 46:20SPEAKER_00: Um but like again with the Prey.
- 46:24SPEAKER_02: Which was standalone.
- 46:26SPEAKER_02: And then after Prey, we got Badlands.
- 46:28SPEAKER_02: No, you're forgetting one.
- 46:30SPEAKER_02: Killer of Killers.
- 46:31SPEAKER_02: Predator Killer of Killers.
- 46:32SPEAKER_02: Which was the animated one.
- 46:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, the animated anthology one.
- 46:35SPEAKER_02: Which was great.
- 46:36SPEAKER_00: Which was great.
- 46:37SPEAKER_00: And then you had Bad Lands.
- 46:38SPEAKER_00: Honestly, and then there you go.
- 46:39SPEAKER_00: I think the Predator franchise.
- 46:40SPEAKER_02: Oh, except you know what?
- 46:41SPEAKER_02: What?
- 46:42SPEAKER_02: Killer of Killers did.
- 46:43SPEAKER_02: It connected all of them.
- 46:45SPEAKER_00: It did.
- 46:45SPEAKER_00: You just slammed your hand on the table.
- 46:47SPEAKER_02: My bad.
- 46:47SPEAKER_02: It's okay.
- 46:48SPEAKER_02: Sorry.
- 46:48SPEAKER_02: I just realized.
- 46:49SPEAKER_00: Okay, but here's the thing.
- 46:50SPEAKER_00: It did, but it didn't.
- 46:52SPEAKER_02: It connected Prey, the first one.
- 46:54SPEAKER_02: No, it Predators 2.
- 46:56SPEAKER_00: It did, but it didn't.
- 46:58SPEAKER_00: It was to me, I think that's where it comes to like the it was a fun Easter egg and be like, okay.
- 47:02SPEAKER_00: Because honestly, at the end of that, I was like, ooh, and like, will we see Dutch again?
- 47:06SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 47:06SPEAKER_00: That'd be kind of cool.
- 47:07SPEAKER_00: But even then, it's like we're not going to have a movie with it.
- 47:10SPEAKER_00: No, it'll be an animated video.
- 47:11SPEAKER_00: It'll be an anime.
- 47:12SPEAKER_00: And but for anime, it's good.
- 47:13SPEAKER_00: Anime, I also think is a good answer.
- 47:15SPEAKER_00: Like, and I know we're out of time, but really quick.
- 47:18SPEAKER_00: When the Snyder verse was finally no longer a thing, somebody pitched, what if you finish it but have it be an animation?
- 47:25SPEAKER_00: And I was like, I could get behind the because it was supposed to be three Justice League movies, but we only got the one, and then they remade the other.
- 47:36SPEAKER_01: Technically they made two.
- 47:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, technically they made two because people are like, Oh, he already has the Snyder verse.
- 47:40SPEAKER_00: They had to film the Snyderverse.
- 47:42SPEAKER_00: People don't realize that.
- 47:43SPEAKER_00: But, anyways, but like we never had Justice League 2 or Justice League 3.
- 47:47SPEAKER_00: I was okay with that being an HBO exclusive, like, get the cast back to voice everything.
- 47:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 47:53SPEAKER_00: Animated movie.
- 47:54SPEAKER_00: I think that would be cool if an IP doesn't work out well and you wanted to be a universe.
- 48:00SPEAKER_00: Cool.
- 48:00SPEAKER_00: We have streaming.
- 48:02SPEAKER_00: Streaming has its place.
- 48:04SPEAKER_00: Maybe you just do that then.
- 48:06SPEAKER_01: I think again, I know we're running out of time, but to speak on the anime, I mean, DC's got an animated universe that works super well.
- 48:17SPEAKER_01: Like, if you haven't watched the DC animated universe movies, you should because they're phenomenal.
- 48:22SPEAKER_00: I didn't know they were all connected until I saw like the fourth one, and I was like, whoa!
- 48:26SPEAKER_01: That's why that's after Flashpoint.
- 48:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 48:30SPEAKER_01: They work so well though, because yeah, they're great standalones, but then you see the little things that connect, and you go, okay, I can watch this as a standalone and not question anything.
- 48:41SPEAKER_01: So good.
- 48:42SPEAKER_01: But if I watch them all, I see the bigger picture.
- 48:46SPEAKER_00: Alright, I got I got nothing else on the subject, um, but uh I'd love to hear what other people think about this topic.
- 48:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 48:54SPEAKER_01: Let us know down in the comments, see what everybody else thinks.
- 48:57SPEAKER_01: Should we have cinematic universes or should we move away from it?
- 49:01SPEAKER_00: Or do we reconfigure how we do it?
- 49:03SPEAKER_01: Or reconfigure.
- 49:04SPEAKER_00: Also, go watch original IP.
- 49:06SPEAKER_00: Stop complaining there are none.
- 49:07SPEAKER_00: Like actually, actually look at what's playing at your theater and watch it.
- 49:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 49:11SPEAKER_00: Holy crap.
- 49:12SPEAKER_00: Anyways.
- 49:13SPEAKER_02: You alright?
- 49:14SPEAKER_02: You seem to be right.
- 49:15SPEAKER_00: Well, no, I'm doing fine, man.
- 49:16SPEAKER_00: You're cool, man.
- 49:17SPEAKER_02: Just remember to like, follow us on all of our social medias, the Instagrams, subscribe to the channel.
- 49:24SPEAKER_02: Uh, we bring out a daily show every week.
- 49:28SPEAKER_02: Daily?
- 49:28SPEAKER_02: Daily, every day.
- 49:29SPEAKER_02: Daily, sorry.
- 49:30SPEAKER_02: Daily every week.
- 49:31SPEAKER_02: That was almost 90% of the time it works every time.
- 49:34SPEAKER_00: Daily every week, once a month.
- 49:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 49:37SPEAKER_00: Sorry.
- 49:38SPEAKER_00: Two times a month.
- 49:38SPEAKER_00: Weekly.
- 49:39SPEAKER_02: Once?
- 49:40SPEAKER_02: Weekly.
- 49:41SPEAKER_02: But we also do supplemental shows like Catching Up with Cody.
- 49:44SPEAKER_02: We've got some other stuff in the works too.
- 49:46SPEAKER_02: We do have some other stuff working.
- 49:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 49:48SPEAKER_02: Working on that.
- 49:49SPEAKER_00: Oh, and also my otters, go check it out.
- 49:52SPEAKER_00: O-O-T-T-R on Instagram, which also stands for Out of the Theater Reviews.
- 49:56SPEAKER_00: I'm also working on a YouTube channel for that.
- 49:58SPEAKER_00: So check that out.
- 49:59SPEAKER_00: My otters, uh I just go inside of a movie, watch it, and then review it the second I'm done.
- 50:04SPEAKER_00: And probably a Facebook page, I assume.
- 50:07SPEAKER_00: Uh there'll be other social medias for otter.
- 50:10SPEAKER_00: I don't know if you're not making Facebook for that.
- 50:13SPEAKER_01: I'm I don't know.
- 50:14SPEAKER_01: Just blitz them all, man.
- 50:15SPEAKER_00: No, I should because they're on my personal Facebook.
- 50:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 50:18SPEAKER_00: So it's like I might as well make a Facebook, but it's like getting around to do that.
- 50:22SPEAKER_01: That's fair.
