- 2:19All right, well, now it's time talk about today's show. This
- 2:23one's called Murder and Mister Malone. It's based on the John Jay Malone books
- 2:30written by Craig Rice, who was known who that's actually the pseudonym for Georgian
- 2:37Georgiana and Rudolph Craig, and she wrote a She wrote a total of fourteen
- 2:46of these books, twelve of which were published during her lifetime. In some
- 2:53ways, these kind of walk the line between the books, walk the line
- 2:57between screwball comedy and hardboiled action. John J. Malone in the books is
- 3:07a character a lawyer just determined to win whatever the cost. He solves mysteries
- 3:16but it's not particularly concerned about justice, more about getting whatever client he has
- 3:23at the moment. Off the Malone movies were and books were surprisingly popular.
- 3:31There were a couple of movies written and these were not These were not minor
- 3:38works. The two John John J. Malone films during the nineteen forties,
- 3:46Having Wonderful Crime and The Lucky Stiff starred Pat O'Brien and one and Brian Donald
- 3:55Levy and the other as Malone. In addition to that, there was a
- 4:00television series, a TV movie, and a series of radio series. This
- 4:11is We're going to start with the first one. This first series starred Frank
- 4:15Lovejoy and it appeared over ABC Radio. The series assumed the time slot formerly
- 4:25held by Sherlock Holmes, which moved to another night on January eleventh of nineteen
- 4:30forty seven. Today's episode is the first episode of Murder and Mister Malone.
- 4:36It comes from May the twenty fourth of nineteen forty seven. It should be
- 4:43noted that, like most radio lawyers who are involved in mystery solving, Malone
- 4:50is not really seen in court that much. This much is similar to the
- 4:55books, and we'll discuss more differences and similarities in a moment. But let's
- 5:00go ahead and relax and listen to the Paul Davis Murder starring Frankle love Joy
- 5:08as John J. Malone. Guild Wine Present Murder and Mister Malone Operator Operator,

- 6:30John J. Malone, Attorney and counselor and law. They say one of
- 6:33the qualifications of a good lawyer is a center of humor. I wouldn't know
- 6:36about that. For example, I never could appreciate the humor of a second
- 6:42at the Charles Morgan. Morgan was a big time gamer in Chicago, who's
- 6:46practical kills. I found a little construng for my teeth. And on this
- 6:49side of the afternoon Morgan and the beautiful blonde mother Me and Linda Stevens were
- 6:54planning one of his fads and the car parked in front of the club eighty
- 6:57sixth on Chicago himself. Do you understand what you're supposed to do in this
- 7:04I'm not too chilling, mister Mark. No, what's the matter with you
- 7:08anyway? Your agent told me you were ah name, mister Morgan. I
- 7:11don't need a job that though. I'm sorry, I didn't mean that.
- 7:15You see, I want to play a joke on this guy, and I
- 7:16want to make sure it goes off the schedule. Yes, no, here
- 7:21this joke bless I right. Want to tell you there's nothing to worry about.
- 7:26Fellows a good friend of mine. She might simply silly. There's a
- 7:30settle of bet. He thinks he's a great deal man with the ladies,
- 7:33and I bet I'm fifty bucks. He was wrong. But mister Morgan,
- 7:36you promised me a hundred But this job, how can you possibly win?
- 7:42You don't understand. It's not the money, it's the principle of the thing.
- 7:45I want to make a sucker out of David Baby. Yeah, his
- 7:48name's Paul David, thee little guy with red hair and pop eyees. You
- 7:51want to have any trouble spot on, he owns the job to be in
- 7:55a corner bull that. I suppose your friend doesn't show any interest. You
- 8:01haven't taken a good look at yourself in the mirror lately? Have you beamy?
- 8:05Not at all? Worry when baby sees you, we'll start buying at
- 8:07them. But at the beginning, you want me to ask him stuff right,
- 8:13so he shouldn't become suspicious and far out. Let him buy you a
- 8:15couple of drinks and accident, Well, they probably want to take you out
- 8:18for the evening. If you tell him where, you have to make a
- 8:20stop at your apartment. I don't think I like that, mister Morgan.
- 8:24What's that I'm not? Like perfectly on the up and up. And you
- 8:28get to your place, I'll be waiting for you, and that's where you're
- 8:31gonna tell me the baby? Is it just a junk? Yeah? I
- 8:37can hardly wait to see him when he learns it's a game, Well,
- 8:41then he'll practically die. Last where do you live anyway, Linda? It's
- 9:01just an ext clause, I got it. You promise you we're gonna call
- 9:07me Paul. Paul? Do you know a man named a man? Named
- 9:13who forget it? You know, I don't get you, Linda. When
- 9:20I'm first U in the club, I easily said to myself, there's a
- 9:22thing with Clare. We said, Hey, so me gave me a dummer.
- 9:26Well, I don't also do things like that. He was a name
- 9:31fault. Then I understand. I get them all the time. Huh,
- 9:35where are we going now? This apartment right here? Oh? Hey,
- 9:39let me have you. No, it's all right, I backing that up.
- 9:46Well, just coming in. I say, hey, nice, last
- 9:54you got here, Linda. I think I'm going to like this. I
- 10:00wouldn't bear on that, David. Oh then Jott double cross? Oh no,
- 10:07are you telling me it was a jewel? Joke's over now, honey,
- 10:09so you can beat it. Yeah, you're a smart girl to keep
- 10:16your trap clothes. I go on, listen, I got up. I
- 10:20don't at any conversation with you. David, just want my dough what don't
- 10:24welsh? Yeah? Yeah, I'm kind of low morganized luck lately from no
- 10:37one. It's gonna get worse. You know, all the boys will laugh
- 10:39at people. Let you hang me up. Man in my position can't afford
- 10:41that David might give other people idea. Look, suppose I pay you a
- 10:46little of day? What do you call a little? I didn't give you
- 10:50a ten grand? Now the balance your has I just couldn't get no warning.
- 10:56You got that dough on you? Oh yeah, yeah, okay,
- 11:00let I was gonna give you all the time. Give him up. But
- 11:05the way that's gun there? Thank you red well, mister Morgan, who's
- 11:13the joke on? Now? I guess it's me and you're not kitting.
- 11:18It's okay, Davis. I'll see you again, not a yard next time.
- 11:24You won't be this lucky mister Lions, you'll enjoy it. Mister Morgan
- 11:39goes to all that trouble, David puts a gun on him and leaves him
- 11:41with his tongue hanging out. That's very amusing, hos. What's happened that
- 11:46that? Oh Morgan started looking for him again? What do you think will
- 11:50happen if he finds him this side? The same thing? Miss Llans?
- 11:54You don't believe Morgan will kill Morgan? Doll talk so I know so I
- 12:01wouldn't last as long as a private sick if I wasn't a good judge of
- 12:05character. Take it from me, mister liiance it's all a black. That's
- 12:09too bad, Tom. It would be worth a lot of money to me
- 12:13if it were. Oh how much is there's a lot of money. What's
- 12:20the difference. You'll not be interested? Try me twenty five hundred dollars.
- 12:26You're right, you're right at that price. I'm not interested. It doesn't
- 12:30worth more. Everybody knows. That's more than has threatened Davis. You're an
- 12:33absolutely not risk. What have you? What have you got against Davis?
- 12:39Anyway? That is none of your business. Either you want the job or
- 12:43you don't. Well, as long as you put it on that basis,
- 12:46miss alliance, let me take it off. Baby said, This is mister
- 13:13Davis. Oh yeah, mister d I'm going a PM book at the corner
- 13:16stake in forty six. Anybody get around the joint? Answers to me several
- 13:20Would you tell him if I hadn't heard from you all day? Oh?
- 13:24Good good, it's Norman Dad, my wife. No, mister Davis.
- 13:30Well once she gets there, Kelly, Hey, cut that what's the car,
- 13:33mister dab Son? Cases? And I've heard you use a fall fall
- 13:37that is taken thiers. I take get is Pascard the so you know how
- 13:41would you like a good quart and all there? Don't you all listening to
- 13:56Murder and Missed Him Alone a presentation of guild wine. Ask any wine expert
- 14:05and he'll tell you this. No wine can be better than the grapes that
- 14:09go into it. And that's where guild California wine comes in. Guild wine
- 14:16always starts from good grape, because guild wine is made by the men who
- 14:20grow their own grape. After all, when a man grows great knowing they're
- 14:24to be used in his own wine, isn't he likely to give them more
- 14:28care than the grower who sells his crop on the open market. It is
- 14:33more than six hundred and thirty of these men, all growing grapes for their
- 14:37own wine to be made in the guild wine sellers they all own together,
- 14:41who form the Cooperative Wine Growers Guild. If you'd like to try their wine,
- 14:48ask for guild wine. It's made by the men who grow their own
- 14:52grape. That's g u i LD guild wine. Look for the big red
- 14:58man, beliebel and all doctor guild Wine's presentation of Murder and miss Him alone,
- 15:13Well as you'll probably get. Paul Davis never did complete that phone call.
- 15:18Thirty five minutes later. He was on the flat in the Morgan the
- 15:20Constant, Chicago, where I was looking for Charles Morgan. But apparently they
- 15:24weren't looking in the right places. But when I came home that afternoon,
- 15:26I found my door on watching That's Gonna had an opo, and I was
- 15:31challenged with the bedroom all lots of the girl. I listened more about it.
- 15:37Keep your hands right over there? What are you doing here? I'm
- 15:39hot, I have a few heads. It still doesn't meant to my question.
- 15:43I don't see why not I wanted for murder. You're the best mayer
- 15:46in Chicago's up not to my writing, by anybody gets somebody else. Listen,
- 15:50all, maybe I haven't handled it right. I didn't kill Davis.
- 15:54And why don't you tell that to the police. I'll think for a minute.
- 15:56They believe me before, as I told you that I don't need this.
- 15:58Listen, I know you don't like me. They're give me credit for
- 16:00little intelligence. I was gonna knock off David, but I shoot my mouth
- 16:04off all over town. So I'll tell you I didn't kill him and her?
- 16:07Did I have no idea? I came over and I've seen what I
- 16:11can do for you, but first I want you to surrender to the cast
- 16:15and it's no deal. I wait, mylone, I'll make your property and
- 16:21give me a chance for you thought I'm out of Suzum dinner since we found
- 16:23guilty. You lawyers just say that because it sounds well we are. I'm
- 16:27convinced with any luck between yourself in a couple of hours. Yeah, my,
- 16:32then I'll give myself up and you're doing the meantime the right me.
- 16:36I want to present me from walking out and calling the police. Oh you
- 16:41just trust me? Yeah right. The list is against my better judgments more
- 16:47than if you got to tell the lawyers. Yeah, this is Norma Davis.
- 17:07My name is John jam Alone. I'm sorry about it any time like
- 17:10this, but I'd like to ask you some questions about your husband. I've
- 17:12told the police everything I know. I'm working at a different angle, Tony,
- 17:19No one is you know. The only idea is who might have laded
- 17:23your husband? Yes, I mean besides more than no, Paul, did
- 17:29you have an enemy in the world? But you know that's not true,
- 17:32mister Davis. Your husband wasn't exactly the most popular citizen in Chicago. Okay,
- 17:37you say, have you talked that one about him? I'm tired of
- 17:41the insinuation. What do you know of the kind of man to wife?
- 17:45I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I won't get out. I don't want to
- 17:48hear any more about it. Leave me alone, but miss a thing to
- 17:55regulate your mama. This was a marvelous so far. Thank you? Do
- 18:00you think I can be missing alone? That I was a heartbrook? And
- 18:03how could you help it? When you're practically convinced me some years? Let
- 18:11me come to you. H Yeah, I'm looking forgotten a hut. Look
- 18:30no further than in the morning. You hut? What my friends told me?
- 18:34What to say? Jug? You're right, can drink? Yeah,
- 18:37I just help yourself, advise in the corner and call me one money about
- 18:41it. You're in a bad spot, Morgan, when you're up here to
- 18:47tell me that. Yeah, you see, I know who killed all day?
- 18:53What that one man? Yeah? How uh? How do you think
- 19:03the king? What you mean? I got a lot of information is telling
- 19:07it's going to the highest fitter, and then you can claim me. I'm
- 19:11not doing any more talking. Do I see the color of the color of
- 19:17your gol? How do I know you've got lice? And oh, I'll
- 19:21give you a shace. Did you know that David's wife was three time at
- 19:25home? That's that's all you get for free. But you can use that
- 19:32kind of stuff like from Hussin. I want you to talk Tom alone.
- 19:34Who's John Jay's represented? You didn't not talk of Oh sure, oh bid,
- 19:41and I could make it fuck So I'll okay. So I'm going back
- 19:45to my Long's apartment. I want you to call him there in about forty
- 19:48five minutes. It's so much you told me if missus bag Long, no
- 19:53good, no good, get the door first. I look, I only

- 20:22Vincent. This is miss him alone. There was a man waiting in my
- 20:25apartment. By any chance, never mind, come in along. I was
- 20:30just asking to you more, and where the devil have you been? All
- 20:33that tells me a lot. I thought you agreed to stay right here.
- 20:37I know, but I have to see. Oh was it something that keep
- 20:41on our first? Not very much. Every lead I explored came back to
- 20:44you. If you missus Davis, you know, just for a few minutes.
- 20:48What'd you think of it? He seemed all broken up over her husband's
- 20:51mner. He's kidding you belong. Make sure think h you've got a new
- 20:55little kicking up on my own. She can hold in hands if some guy
- 20:57wasn't her husband. Where did you get that's private? Dick and Joe Hudson?
- 21:02Oh that, I don't care what he is, Malone. He's got
- 21:04the evidence of plan. What did he say, Jill Lizard? He wouldn't
- 21:07tell me. But I made a problem to be calling you anything, Morgan.
- 21:11I wouldn't trust that game the sag of Bible. What did you give
- 21:14him? Yeah, a guy like Hudson doesn't talk to you want to promise
- 21:18him? Well you better say your little I say you can clear my milon
- 21:22probably him. Hello, Yeah that's right, Hudson. I take it that.
- 21:30Yeah, Well what do you think? What I think is unimportant?
- 21:33Morgan tells me you can clear them. Well, I'm not as you gotta
- 21:38talk about it. I don't like it, Morgan, but just think.
- 21:41Well make up your mind by okay, we'll be over in an hour.
- 21:56It must be down the hall now, no here it is. I want
- 22:02you to let me handle Hudson more than and keep your mouth shut back.
- 22:10What's keep I don't know, maybe one on oh, I doubt that having
- 22:15yourself take a piece of that keyhole can't see you say yeah, because the
- 22:21key is still in the lot. I mean, Hudson's got to be in
- 22:23there. Hey, Hudson, open up. I've done all right. Wasn't
- 22:32break it down, shouldn't take too much of it. Unwash you do it
- 22:40happen? Husband and the devil that likes sell on the door. Put yourself
- 22:45more than way. Let's preak amend I got it fair? We are well.
- 22:53Guess made a matter of sleep that knife in his back? Of things?
- 23:10You are listening to murder and miss them alone. A presentation of gill
- 23:18wine. If you're planning a dessert bridge party, you want to serve something

- 24:12lead and all back to Guild Wine's presentation of murder and missed the Malone Twenty
- 24:27minutes after we found the body of Joe Hospital Centema draw Cook County Homicide arrived.
- 24:33He should have seen his face light up when inspired, Morgan. He
- 24:36acted like a man who was prospecting for silver and final gold. There's a
- 24:40nice piece of work, Malone, A very nice season of work, all
- 24:41right, Morgan, let's go Oh, let's lieutenant, He's not the reason
- 24:44I caug this. No, I know, but I'm not complaining told you
- 24:47not to clone. I'm beginning to think you're right, Morgan. For the
- 24:48same nickel, I could have thrown somebody with brain what kind of a cracks
- 24:52that? Well, in case you haven't noticed, Lieutenant, as a body
- 24:55lying on that, Sophie. I'll keep as long as you raised the point,
- 24:57why did you kill a Morgan? Are you crazy? You just got
- 25:00here with more? Don't hand me that. It's the truth. McRae.
- 25:03So you're going to be a alibi, yes, and you better listen unless
- 25:06you want to look like a jersey and go to cry hoo. How long
- 25:08would you say? Hudson had said, not too long. The body's still
- 25:11warm, sort of been anywhere from fifteen minutes to three quarters of an hour,
- 25:15so that that's more than that. I will see how because he was
- 25:18with me every minutes from the time I got Hudson's trawler the time we broke
- 25:21down the door. The whole business is at least an hour. Your word's
- 25:23not good enough, Malone. Okay, if you don't believe me, you
- 25:26can check up the switch board at my place in the dormant downstairs. I'll
- 25:29do. If that's not enough, I'll big up the hacker you go with
- 25:30over now. I still doesn't mean Morgan. Couldn't it kill Day? Oh?
- 25:33Use your head, lieutenant. You know both these murders were committed by
- 25:37the same party. Hudson knew who it was. That's why he was killed.
- 25:41I still say it was Morgan. You're crazy. Hudson was going to
- 25:42clear he's quiet Morgan, all right, lieutenants, I'll advise him to confess
- 25:49if you can show me one thing. What then? How did he get
- 25:52in here? You can see the only door was locked on the inside,
- 25:56so a lot he could have used the window. Oh yeah, the bars
- 26:02on, that's right, and nobody would a midget to pick thro the open
- 26:04and there must be another door again it Sarah, Well, it was a
- 26:07physical impossibility for anybody to do it. Jill has yet it was done.
- 26:11I can't tell you, but maybe I can take you to a little lady
- 26:15who can't find I listen, Malona, but do you ever find out?
- 26:26I have more than go? We'll have money. Wait, it's the house
- 26:30where Paul Davis lives. That's right, lieutenants. When your can't bother his
- 26:34wife? Now, why not? Because her husband was just murdered. But
- 26:37he may surprise you with what he knows about it. Morgan told me he
- 26:41was being a romance by some SERI who I don't know, apparently needed to
- 26:45David asked me, and the girl I never yeh, I don't knows to
- 26:49David remember me, not maybe for me. I'm finings Malone. I'm just
- 26:56saying this gentleman would like to ask you a couple of questions. This gentleman
- 27:00means nothing in my own life. You never can tell he's a lieutenant in
- 27:03the Crook County Police. Oh, it's just that the house is in such
- 27:11a name. We promise who loves it? Norma, I uh, I
- 27:19think you're being paid. It's just it's nothing. Right for a moment,
- 27:25darlright, I was the fellow lions alone, Lieutenant, I can explain everything,
- 27:30Sure you can't. But suppose we do a Don Thomas. It's customary
- 27:36and as the day when the police are questioned in some he's done absolutely nothing,
- 27:40nothing but murder your husband and a man named Joe Hud that's a lie
- 27:42you denied you and lyons with busiting in the romance department behind your husband's back
- 27:47head. And what's the lion's doing here now? He's just counting like he
- 27:51helps your murder, Johann No moment alone, I thought this gentleman was the
- 27:56officer of the law. Yeah, you're right, Lions, but if you
- 27:59didn't, min West, he'sually gonna do a less embarrassing. You're went for
- 28:02a bad shot. Joe Hudson was murdered at ten forty five tonight. Now
- 28:06where were you at that time? It's normal here, that's oh now,
- 28:08that's what I call a wonderful Alabama tennis. You said there wasn't anyone else
- 28:12around. It's a century. Oh, but there was them alone. It's
- 28:17justice of the teaching, Sizero. I think you may remember us. I
- 28:21shouldn't because I gave him one hundred dollars to perform the marriage ceremony that made
- 28:26Norman here missus life. It doesn't make sense, Macros. You watch where
- 28:41you're driving. I tell you that something's story about that merite you'll start the
- 28:44life. It doesn't at like you a strange Within twelve dollars after a husband
- 28:47has murdered missus, Davis marries another man. In course, it does.
- 28:49But there's no law against this. As an attorney, you want to know
- 28:52that better than anybody else. Yeah, but an alibi like that must have
- 28:55a hole in them. Yeah. Will you show me where, and after
- 28:57you do that, show me how either missed as David Lyons could have murdered
- 29:00hud with the physical impossibility for Morgan to kill him and apply to them to
- 29:04hold everything. Oh what a sum said. You know when I say compression
- 29:11is good for the show, I tell you I got the answer to all
- 29:12of it was on the level alone. Yeah, I know who killed Hudby
- 29:15and with the help of Morgan. You want to prove it was live On.
- 29:27I don't know anything about missus David st what I told you before,
- 29:30or how did you discovered to the who alone? I didn't know it was
- 29:33lions. All Huson told me was with some man. How well did you
- 29:37know Hudby? I met him for the first time the day he got the
- 29:40touch of one of my friends, meets that he wanted to stand. Well,
- 29:44let's just put this back, O love. Why don't we drop the
- 29:47whole business alone? Yeah you like that? Sure? No, Now,
- 29:52I couldn't have killed hutch and tway You're wrong more than the still No,
- 29:56but I do exactly. I know how your manage it. Yeah, it's
- 30:02pretty clever. I can't blame myself. I'm not seeing you sooner. No
- 30:06wonder you insist that I go and see Hudson the way to hear you explain
- 30:11how I killed. I'm say the mess of the cup. Don't keep yourself,
- 30:15Maloney. He's done all the talking your knowed. Oh put it with
- 30:18it, Morgan, you know, because that'd be cool enough to come up
- 30:21there alone. Funny, I don't get anybody around. You're not looking at
- 30:26the right point. Get on. I'm warning you, Morgan. You gotta
- 30:29throw your gun in the middle of the road you want it, Lieutenant,
- 30:33watch this Maloney may be active. Oh that home and a port it Lieutenanta
- 30:38doesn't call so much ability. You canna drop me off at the corner of
- 30:52the sinner. Well, it's uh Ben's malone. You're forgetting something. I
- 30:59got a report like, oh, what's happened you? Well, you know
- 31:02there's Morgan, Jill Davis. Oh sure, I was the first one to
- 31:04say, Jiman, so you should have started your gain. Wow, when
- 31:07you're talking all that razzle dazzle about Hudsons, what you kind of feel me?
- 31:11I don't see. It's so sadly the ended. I was right with
- 31:14him. Of course, I'm reconstructing now, but this is what must have
- 31:18happened. Rans tried to hire Hudson to punctat. Hudson said he'd take it
- 31:22over and Davis has still huts to no immediately, but if he didn't do
- 31:25it, Morgan must have. I don't see how that followed. It could
- 31:27have been like, I don't know if lions were willing to do the job.
- 31:30Why did he applay hutch me in the first place. I don't know.
- 31:32I'd to be Morgan, but Hudson realized that he tried to take down
- 31:36Morgan. Even though Morgan has to fight for right, he might be induced
- 31:38to say Davis's wife. So Morgan played along with him, asked me getting
- 31:44touched me? Now, what's come to the part? I want to hear?
- 31:45Well, when Morgan went to me, Hudson, you know it would
- 31:48be the first of many stakes meetings unless he said set so he kicks the
- 31:52Michigan. Now, why didn't we kill a man? And man the gentleman
- 32:00says he needed another about and I was it. Now, I don't get
- 32:04it. It's pretty simple. He needed someone with him. Why he murdered
- 32:07But why there? Remember he said it was a physical impossibility for anyone to
- 32:14get into that room. And still Hudson before Morgan and I broke down the
- 32:16door. Yeah, I don't know. Say you hit them there and right
- 32:19on my head. It was a pity. So that means Hutton was killed
- 32:23while I was in the room. All right, not, let me get
- 32:28this straight along you meanwhile, you were hunting for that life. Morgan was
- 32:31hunting for a place of his life. He wasn't quite a cancer. Oh,
- 32:37Hutson was drugs. He couldn't make a night cry and I doesn't make
- 32:39any night at all. Yeah, well, I don't run you not the
- 32:45next time I think something. You didn't listening. I told you more than
- 32:47it all along. And yeah, well you'll have to give me a lieutenant.
- 32:51I haven't heard so many radio shows I forgot it wasn't unconstitutional for a
- 32:57cossably right. Let's hope the sound he comes out of a president. And
- 33:21I had a story of a fellow who refused to pay for protection money.
- 33:24He believes in freedom of enterprise. Learn the hard way that murder is a
- 33:30bad business. I'll sing you in I'm at the sales next week when I
- 33:34picked me up at my office, BEFO, I'll be winning nice. Thanks
- 33:38Love. Joy was sad as John J. Malone and appeared through the courtesy
- 33:42of Story Production. Our program is directed by Bill Russo, with music by
- 33:46Johnny Duty Murderer Mister Malone. He's produced by Bernard L. Schubert. Now
- 33:52this is art gil Moore inviting you to ut in next week. The events
- 33:55and characters depicted in this story were entirely fictional. Any resemblance to actual places
- 34:01or people living or dead is entirely coincidental. Murder and MISTI alone has come
- 34:07to you from Hollywood and its presented by the Wine Growers Guild of Blue Dye,
- 34:10California. Yes, the name of the wine, the Peaceful Fine You
- 34:20you BBC the American Broadcasting Company Welcome Back with Jack Webb playing the role of
- 34:53a police flutenant and that was not as uncommon as one would think. We
- 35:00heard the name of Bill Russo on the credits, and Russo also cast Webs
- 35:07as either police or a heavy criminal in most episodes of the New Adventures of
- 35:16Michael Shane, which he which he also produced. The series definitely has some
- 35:23of that cynicism and you kind of I do appreciate these sort of deconstruction,
- 35:31a little bit of the typical trope where the cop has it wrong, and
- 35:40definitely a nice twist, not one that you normally expect on these shows.
- 35:45It's very rare for the police to get it right. The big difference that
- 35:52I noticed from the books is that, as far as I could remember,
- 35:57no one, not in particularly not Malone, had anything to drink. In
- 36:02the Malone books, alcohol is really central to the character. Anything going on,
- 36:10there will generally be a proposal that they go ahead and have a drink
- 36:17or several on it as they try and solve the case. And I'm not
- 36:22exaggerating in one way. The series really did represent the sort of alcohol fantasies
- 36:31that people tended to indulge in for whatever reason after the end of prohibition,
- 36:38and it does not really carry over to the radio version, which I think
- 36:42is a good thing, because really the whole alcohol fantasy thing really is something
- 36:53that feels like it's, you know, from the nineteen thirties, and this
- 37:00is in the post war era. It should be noted that I have read
- 37:02one of the post war Malone books and they did continue that, and I
- 37:07think it hurt the books. But the radio program pretty good, solid hard
- 37:13boiled action, and I a lot to how they managed to maintain this sense
- 37:16of mystery over the story, even while they revealed a whole lot of what
- 37:22was going on. So this was I think a pretty clever story. Fortunately,
- 37:27most of this series is missing. In fact, there were a total
- 37:35of sixty six episodes featuring Frank Lovejoy as John Malone, and we actually only
- 37:43have two of those we'll hear. I'll talk a little bit about Frank Lovejoy
- 37:49next episode before he's gone totally, but we will actually hear a grand total
- 37:54of four different actors in the role of John J. Malone and a lot
- 38:01of different productions. I think this will be an interesting run. So I
- 38:06hope that you will be tuned in next week for the next adventure of John
- 38:13J. Malone. In our last episode we have with Frank Lovejoy in the
- 38:16role. Listener comments from Laurie says, who writes on Facebook. I'm really
- 38:22trying to buy the app to put on my Android phone, but can't seem
- 38:25to find it in the Google Play stores. There's some secret that I don't
- 38:30know the Andrew Laurie. If you're curious about the app for Android, you
- 38:37can get the app, but only through the Amazon App Store and usually if
- 38:43you don't have it. I have an Android advice that didn't come with the
- 38:45Amazon App Store, was able to go and download the Amazon App Store through
- 38:54my main app store, and so you're able to purchase it that way.
- 38:59So I hope that helps. And Laurie was able to download that, and
- 39:05I hope other listeners are able to enjoy that as well. Also, Justin
- 39:09Wright saying, Adam, I want to thank you for introducing me to the
- 39:12Mister Modo radio series. I've seen the Mister Moto movies and read some of
- 39:15the books, but I've never heard of the radio show. Also, I
- 39:19wanted to know if you've read the Robert Goldsborough Near a Wolf books. Once
- 39:23again, thank you and keep up the good work. Well, Justin I
- 39:28am working my way through the original Wolf Kennon and after that i'll buy Rex
- 39:37Stout and I'll consider going over and reading all the Goldsborough books. The only
- 39:44one that I've read of Goldsborough was the latest, which was a prequel Archie
- 39:52meets Nero Wolf, and I was somewhat disappointed in that, to be honest,
- 40:00just because the voice of the character really did not sound a whole lot
- 40:09like the Archie good one I know. Now, it has to be said
- 40:13that Archie's nineteen in the book, so he doesn't have this fully developed voice,
- 40:17but there's no sense of him being a smart raleic or even being a
- 40:22ladies man at all, even some foreshadowing of the type of person he was
- 40:30going to become. So I was somewhat disappointed in that. But the rest
- 40:37of the Wolf of the Goldsboro Wolf books without the challenge of you know,
- 40:44writing in and filling in backstory. I'll take a listen, I'll take a
- 40:49look at and see what I think of it as soon as I finish the
- 40:53main reck Stout Wolf Cannon. And actually I only have. I only have
- 41:00one book and about eleven pages of another before I have finished all the rex
- 41:07out Near wolfbooks. So I will certainly be sure to post some reviews when
- 41:13I get into the Goldsborough ones. All right, Well, that'll do it
- 41:15for today. In the meantime, I send your comments to Box thirteen at
- 41:19Great Attractors dot net, follow us on Twitter, Radio Detectors, and become
