- Sean Graver: A listener said that he showed two co-workers an internet link. That's it. Just a link to something public about someone else's history. Now he didn't think much of it in the moment, but then he found himself sitting across from HR, hearing the words investigation and replaying it over and over, wondering how something that he felt so small turned into this. Well, welcome back to Prayer Before Work. My name is Sean. So the listener admitted it was wrong. He told them he regretted it. He has three years of strong work behind him and a manager who's been encouraging him as he advanced in his career. But none of that stops that sickening feeling. That one moment could undo all of it. Now King Solomon writes something in Proverbs 17:9 that speaks right into this. It says, Whoever covers an offense seeks love, but he who repeats a matter separates close friends. And that verse isn't only about what someone else did to you, it's also a mirror. So something was already true and already public, but passing it along still costs something. It separated instead of protected. And that's worth pondering really honestly, without spiraling into shame over the whole thing. And here's the difference though that is really worth noticing. Guilt says I did something wrong, but shame says I am something wrong. So guilt is useful. It's what led you to admit the mistake and mean it. But shame just keeps you stuck, replaying that moment instead of learning from it and moving on. Now you've already done the hard part. You've told the truth about it. What's left now is trusting that that one lapse in judgment doesn't erase three years of good work and choosing going forward to be someone who protects information instead of passing it on, even when it's technically available for anyone to find. Well let's pray. Well God we've made mistakes That felt small in the moment, but a lot heavier afterwards. But thank you for the honesty to admit when we got it wrong instead of hiding from it. Help us release the shame though that we're carrying it and just hold on to the lesson instead. Give us patience through whatever process is ahead of us, and help us become people who guard what isn't ours to share. Even when no one would notice if we didn't. We pray in Jesus' name. Amen. I'll go make today a count.
