- 0:31What is going on, everybody?
- 0:33We are back after a week off of me traveling instead of Hattie this time.
- 0:41We are back to kind of catch up with each other and kind of see how each other are doing.
- 0:46So you're back in Bali.
- 0:49Last time I talked to you, you're still in Egypt, I believe, or just got back.
- 0:54I think we just got back.
- 0:55Yeah.
- 0:57Yeah.
- 0:58So, so how has it been post being crowned the queen of Egypt for your fit and getting back to Bali?
- 1:12Um, it's been good.
- 1:13I think, uh, there was a bunch of like unnecessary stress that I've kind of been putting myself through.
- 1:20So I'm kind of just trying to work through all of that right now.
- 1:24But, um,
- 1:26It's good to be back in Bali.
- 1:28Like I said before, Egypt was awesome, but it was very intense.
- 1:32We were there for a month and that was long enough.
- 1:37It's obviously really nice to be back home to our Bali home.
- 1:42There's just a lot going on in my head.
- 1:47I'm just trying to get through all of that.
- 1:50So when you first went there and we first started the show, we talked about that one of the reasons you go there is to kind of get out of your head and to have a place where you can just train and not worry about the little things.
- 2:07So how had that gone up until the last couple of weeks?
- 2:14Yeah, it goes really well.
- 2:16Like once I find my routine, I'm kind of a person that needs to find my routine and then I feel at ease.
- 2:24So like the last few years that I've traveled to Bali, it has taken me a little bit to find my routine.
- 2:30But then once I do, it's really good.
- 2:34Like even this time around coming back from Egypt, I found my routine.
- 2:37It's just, I don't know.
- 2:39I was talking to Jake and he kind of put it into perspective that like he thinks that I'm kind of,
- 2:44putting a few extra things like unnecessary stress, uh, in my life, just because I have like these little injuries and they're really, they're really bumming me out.
- 2:57And like, it's kind of funny.
- 2:59It kind of has come full circle.
- 3:01I've talked to my friend, Liz.
- 3:03She asked me a question about like what fills my cup.
- 3:06And I told her, you know,
- 3:08being healthy fills my cup being like when my body is fully healthy and I'm able to do all the things that I want to do, you know, like CrossFit, there's so many different things that you do.
- 3:19And I love to be able to do all of those things.
- 3:22And I think right now it's just like hurting my mental side, not being able to do those things.
- 3:28I mean, I'm able to do everything.
- 3:30It's just, I'm, I'm scared that I'm making things worse with my elbow.
- 3:34Um, so yeah.
- 3:39I think it's good to be back here in Bali, but I think that I'm, it's just been hard on, on me, I guess not being a hundred percent, uh, healthy, I guess.
- 3:55So you just won a competition, so you know your body's working, but I get the point that you're wondering for how long because you're pushing through injuries, and at what point is that too much?
- 4:10Do you also sit and think, well, I'm in my off-season technically.
- 4:15Is it worth a little bit of rest?
- 4:19to be bet.
- 4:19I mean, I'm just, I'm throwing this out there because I know it would be going through my head.
- 4:24Is it better to like rest at a couple of weeks, see where you're at and then, or what, what are you, what are your thoughts?
- 4:34Are you conflicted?
- 4:35Yeah, I really, I really am because I'm, you know, it's like it's tendonitis or tendinopathy or something.
- 4:44It's like golfer's elbow.
- 4:46So I know that,
- 4:49I've had tennis.
- 4:52I have golfers right now.
- 4:53I've had tennis before and that was during firefighting.
- 4:57And honestly, I pretended my arm was broken and I didn't use it for three days and it went away.
- 5:03But I also think that this has gone a little bit longer and like that does scare me to stop completely.
- 5:10So obviously I know that we would do like lower body or do some, uh, you know, cardio or whatever it is.
- 5:16Um,
- 5:18but like I have been going to see physio.
- 5:21I have been doing some work for it, but I'm kind of nervous that maybe that is what I have to do is rest it completely.
- 5:29Like do what I did in firefighting and pretend my arm is broken, literally not use it.
- 5:35But that's hard too, because like I use the scooter, but every time I'm using the scooter, I even like, so I rev it and then I just set my hand on there.
- 5:43So I'm not using like,
- 5:45that grip right so i'll just kind of like set it there but i'm like is this even making it worse because it's it's like um what is it called it's swollen all the time yeah that's it's crazy because that grip because i had something very similar i can't remember
- 6:09And something I did in my everyday life was exacerbating it and making it worse.
- 6:16So even if I was resting it at the gym or in workouts, it wasn't helping because in my everyday life, I had to do something that made it worse.
- 6:27And that's got to be first, especially with a scooter.
- 6:30That...
- 6:33That flexion of the wrist, that goes the whole way up your arm.
- 6:39And so, yeah.
- 6:43I can't even imagine.
- 6:45And that's really the only way around there.
- 6:50Yeah.
- 6:51I mean, I can hop on Jake's scooter, which he does double me a lot.
- 6:55But when I'm going somewhere on my own, then, yeah.
- 7:00Got to be ripping on that scoot.
- 7:05Well, the good news is you have some time.
- 7:08We're only in December.
- 7:12You could one-handed do the open and make the top 25%.
- 7:15Well, thanks.
- 7:22That does give you some cushion, though, at the beginning of the season.
- 7:27Yeah.
- 7:28Yeah.
- 7:31because really you just have to be ready.
- 7:33Quarterfinals are so important this year.
- 7:37And that's really where you have to be ready because of the smaller numbers going to semis.
- 7:44Yeah.
- 7:44And I'm going to be, I'm going to be smart here.
- 7:47I just, I think I'm, I think we're kind of playing around with what I can do right now.
- 7:53And like, that's the thing I always tell Tristan.
- 7:57I'm just like, okay, well, cause he says in the notes and stuff like,
- 8:01don't go to pain or don't go further than what you should or whatever.
- 8:05Right.
- 8:06And like, it's hard because it's not really painful.
- 8:09It's, it's just there.
- 8:11So it's kind of like, you know, I can do a little bit and then I feel it just a little bit.
- 8:19And I'm like, okay, is that enough to stop?
- 8:21I don't know.
- 8:22And that's why I think it's frustrating me.
- 8:24Cause I'm like, I'm thinking to myself, okay, am I being dumb by still doing,
- 8:29doing the work when it doesn't necessarily hurt you know what I mean but yeah well just remember he's referred to as coach Krispy Kreme on the show oh yeah that's the only way people know of him it's Kenneth that told him that right I think yeah Kenneth started it so I guess he like he has a gym that has the logo like the Krispy Kreme logo
- 8:59Yeah, I think it was for a team who went to the games and it said, yeah, some Krispy Kreme on it.
- 9:07Einhorn or something.
- 9:09Yeah, it said Einhorn.
- 9:12Yeah, but everybody, they couldn't see the writing.
- 9:14All they saw was the shape of the Krispy Kreme logo.
- 9:18Now I want Krispy Kreme.
- 9:23When I was in Arizona last week, I tried Voodoo Donut because I had heard about it on all the food channels and everything.
- 9:31And I really underwhelmed.
- 9:35Fun place to go.
- 9:37Really cool stuff.
- 9:39They're really creative with the way they make their donuts.
- 9:43But where I grew up, there was a little mom and pop shop that made homemade donuts every day.
- 9:48And everything pales in comparison to that to me.
- 9:52Yeah, those are the best.
- 9:53And you can find the little ones.
- 9:54I found one like that in Houston when I was living there.
- 9:57I can't remember what it was called, but one of my Uber drivers told me to go there.
- 10:03And I thought, oh, I'm never going to see it because I'm probably not going to be in that area.
- 10:07And sure enough, it was on my way to the gym every day.
- 10:10I saw it and I was like, is this what she's talking about?
- 10:13So I stopped there and they were delicious.
- 10:19Yeah, I treated the Airbnb group.
- 10:24Two athletes were staying with me, Jamie, and she coaches an athlete, Jim Pieper.
- 10:28Jim took second at Legends.
- 10:30Jamie won.
- 10:31So we were celebrating with donuts.
- 10:34Amazing.
- 10:36And that was a pretty fun evening.
- 10:39Yeah, how was it at comp?
- 10:42My friend Tara got third.
- 10:47I've said over...
- 10:51I saw you commenting because like we have a girl that does all the leaderboards and everybody was commenting on the leaderboards and I saw your comments and yeah, it was the best competition I've been to for the way it was run.
- 11:08Oh, wow.
- 11:11Like you could, you could nitpick some things, but like, and I've, and I've said this on the show earlier this week, like the event directors were so present.
- 11:21and out on the floor and open and available to everybody that when something went wrong, it was fixed immediately.
- 11:29Oh, that's cool.
- 11:30That's really good.
- 11:31And it was just three.
- 11:33So there's two event directors.
- 11:34I think they brought in a third.
- 11:36They just were so engaged and so into it and cared so much that it just made it a great event.
- 11:45Nice.
- 11:46Amazing.
- 11:47And that's going to be like the new
- 11:50masters like crossfit games right correct okay now that will be what's that i was confused when i saw it going on because i thought like the name was the same and then i was like is it going on right now like is that the crossfit games i don't understand what's going on but yeah now i understand and that's what they are
- 12:14They're keeping the community event going.
- 12:17So there will always be this Legends December event, and they're keeping that in Tempe, Arizona for now.
- 12:25The game site will not be in Tempe.
- 12:30Um, that they're working on a contract with CrossFit and a bunch of stuff.
- 12:35So it will be at a different location.
- 12:37Um, but held, but the same event directors will be doing it.
- 12:44Um, so, uh, super stoked for them.
- 12:46They definitely deserve it.
- 12:50Yeah.
- 12:51And how about the West being in Carson?
- 12:53I'm so excited.
- 12:54Oh my God.
- 12:55Isn't that awesome?
- 12:56Yeah.
- 12:57Yeah.
- 12:58I'm so excited.
- 13:00And I think like the sneaky big news of that whole thing is that CrossFit's giving up running the semifinals after one year.
- 13:09You know, for years it was Atlas and Granite and the Mac, Loud and Live.
- 13:19They ran those events.
- 13:20Last year CrossFit said, hey, we're taking Europe and North America and we're running them ourselves.
- 13:26After one year, they were like, nope, we're giving it back to the people to know what they're doing.
- 13:30Yeah, okay.
- 13:31That's what I thought because it is West Coast classic, right?
- 13:34Yeah.
- 13:36Yeah, so that one will be run by Loud and Live, the same people who do Waterpalooza.
- 13:41Oh, wow.
- 13:41Okay, cool.
- 13:43And then the Syndicate Crown is going to be held in the East, and that is the same group, the 12 Labors group, that run MacFest every year.
- 13:55And they ran the Mac and the Syndicate while they were semifinals prior to last year.
- 14:01So I think that's huge.
- 14:03That's huge news.
- 14:04Um, and it's going to be great for the athletes because you have, you have event organizers that do this all the time.
- 14:11Yeah, I think so too.
- 14:15And it's great for CrossFit.
- 14:16Yeah.
- 14:19Don't get back into a business you haven't done in a while.
- 14:22Yeah.
- 14:24Stick to what you know.
- 14:26And the fact that they keep changing stuff.
- 14:30And the fact that it's in Carson, the original home of the professional style of the CrossFit Games, I've never been.
- 14:39My first year at the Games was the year they moved to Madison.
- 14:45Oh, wow.
- 14:46Okay.
- 14:47Yeah, this is going to be a very special year for me.
- 14:50So it'll be my first time in Carson.
- 14:54And as I'm, as I researched, it's at the tennis stadium, it looks like.
- 14:58So I think I saw something about that too, which will be so cool.
- 15:03I saw a couple of comments too, of people being like, are you going to move to the West this time?
- 15:07I'm like, no, everyone back off.
- 15:09Stay where you're at.
- 15:11We've already got a hard enough field over here.
- 15:18Yeah, like everybody was jockeying for positions of where they lived.
- 15:23And then it turned out that both sides were so stacked.
- 15:28It didn't matter what side you were in.
- 15:29And you're doing the same workouts.
- 15:33Hopefully that stays the same.
- 15:34Yeah, I hope so too.
- 15:38I really like that.
- 15:40I liked it, but at the same time, I don't like, I don't even know if they did this, but I don't like if they put everyone on a leaderboard because like I heard that in Australia, their floors were like ice when they were doing the, the sled pole and stuff.
- 15:58So like, you can't really stack people up when the, you know, when the floors are different or when, you know, when things are super different.
- 16:07So.
- 16:09You and I are on the same wavelength.
- 16:11There's always going to be somebody, some, some math nerd that's going to put together an, uh, like an overall leaderboard and all that kind of stuff.
- 16:20But it can't matter for getting to the games because they're environmental.
- 16:25If you're in the tennis stadium, you're outdoors.
- 16:28If you're at Mac, you're indoors though.
- 16:31That alone changes everything.
- 16:34It's like, I think everyone in Australia finished that event and like,
- 16:38Not even half our field finished because the sled was so hard.
- 16:42Yeah.
- 16:42Like, okay, how can you stack people up with that?
- 16:46They couldn't even guarantee the lanes were equal at the west and east last year.
- 16:53Oh, I didn't realize that.
- 16:57Well, like, some lanes you could tell that sled was moving easier than others.
- 17:02Yeah.
- 17:04Yeah, I felt so bad for Madison.
- 17:06She was right beside me and hers kept folding underneath.
- 17:09So she had to keep going out, unfolding it, going back, pulling it, folding it.
- 17:17Yeah.
- 17:18I love her.
- 17:18Yeah, she's amazing.
- 17:26I, one of my favorite interviews I've ever done.
- 17:29She's so raw and real.
- 17:30It doesn't give a shit what anybody thinks.
- 17:37So cool.
- 17:39Yeah.
- 17:40Yeah.
- 17:40It was fun meeting her and training with her for a week.
- 17:44Hopefully we can do that again in Houston, but.
- 17:48Yeah.
- 17:49I, when I was researching her, like she was an MMA fighter and she fought a fight with a broken foot and ankle or something.
- 18:00And that was her only loss.
- 18:03Wow.
- 18:04And it was, and it was like a decision.
- 18:06Jeez.
- 18:10That's crazy.
- 18:11So she's just strong as yeah.
- 18:14Yeah.
- 18:14As strong as they come.
- 18:17yeah so um you were talking about before we came on the air that one of the things you guys are doing just to kind of relax and get out of your head is you're you're starting back the um harry potter series and is that something you've done before yeah like we we watch it i feel like we watch it every year around christmas time um just yeah it's a good it's a good series so
- 18:47just again, like you said, just relax and watch it.
- 18:51We started a little late last night, so we only got through like half of it.
- 18:54I was falling asleep.
- 18:55So, I mean, when you've seen it so many times, then obviously you know what happens, but yeah.
- 19:03Yeah.
- 19:04What's funny is I'm, I'm going to, I'm going to be one of those snobs that I read the books and I love the books and
- 19:13The movies, I like the first one and I like the last two.
- 19:19Okay.
- 19:22I mean, that's what you always hear.
- 19:24The books are better.
- 19:26Right.
- 19:27But...
- 19:28And it's probably more of a, they're great books first of all.
- 19:32And, but secondly, it's a memory thing.
- 19:34So my wife and I, the way I started reading Harry Potter at like 40 or 35 or whatever it was, was that my nephew wanted to read them.
- 19:46He was being raised by my mom and my mom was like, Hey, can you read this and see if it's appropriate for him?
- 19:54And I said, okay, so I'll read the first book to see if it's appropriate.
- 20:00Yeah, they are.
- 20:02But it's big print.
- 20:03Can you read this for me?
- 20:06And so, I mean, I read books anyway, so it wasn't like a big deal.
- 20:11So I read the book and I was like, oh my gosh, this is amazing.
- 20:15And yes, it's totally appropriate.
- 20:17So then my whole family got into like, then my mom read it too.
- 20:22And my wife read it and all of that.
- 20:25So it would be, we would either go to the bookstore the night they were released or we would like Amazon them so they're delivered the day of release.
- 20:36And we would just start reading and try to get ahead of everybody so they didn't spoil anything for us.
- 20:42Well, my wife and I, like it became such a battle that we just said, why don't we just like read it together?
- 20:50And so my wife and I actually would like lay in bed and read Harry Potter to each other.
- 20:58Just take turns reading chapters.
- 21:00And, um, and that's how we read Harry Potter.
- 21:03Like she'd read a chapter.
- 21:05I'd read a chapter.
- 21:06She'd read a chapter.
- 21:07I'd read a chapter.
- 21:08And, uh,
- 21:10And that's how we read probably books three through seven.
- 21:14Oh, wow.
- 21:18That's super cool.
- 21:19I like that.
- 21:20It's like watching the movie together, but you guys are reading it together.
- 21:24That's super cool.
- 21:25It's nice.
- 21:27I'm stupid, so I would make character voices.
- 21:31So I'd read the book like, don't be the male.
- 21:35I love it.
- 21:37Or whoever it is, you know, as we're going through it.
- 21:42But she wouldn't do that back for me.
- 21:44Aw, come on.
- 21:47So it was like watching a movie.
- 21:51And then you said you guys also watched Lord of the Rings.
- 21:55which that takes at least like seven weeks, I think, to get to all of it.
- 22:02Yeah, they're long.
- 22:03I would probably say I like Lord of the Rings more than Harry Potter.
- 22:11But yeah, we just, I don't think there's a certain time that we watch those, but a lot of the time it's with our friends, Amanda and Mikey.
- 22:21And then obviously like on Instagram, we're always sending each other
- 22:25Lord of the Rings memes so I tried to get my wife into those movies and we watched the first one and I think like we had the extended three and a half hour whatever I don't even remember it was so long the first one
- 22:47So we're sitting through the whole thing.
- 22:49She's into it.
- 22:51I'm thinking, okay, I've got to win here.
- 22:54And then the movie ends with them just walking up the mountain.
- 22:59And she's like, that's it?
- 23:01There's no ending?
- 23:02They're just walking?
- 23:05And I'm like, well, there's two more coming.
- 23:11And she's like, oh, I'm done.
- 23:13I am not.
- 23:18Done because of the ending.
- 23:20She needed a little better ending.
- 23:23Yeah, because it just left... She didn't understand that it was a trilogy as a book and that it continued on.
- 23:31Because in Harry Potter, every book ends with something dramatic happening, right?
- 23:38Before you go to the next one, even though it's seven of them.
- 23:41Right.
- 23:42Lord of the Rings, there's no ending.
- 23:45It's just them...
- 23:47It's like, hey, we'll see you at the next one.
- 23:50Yep.
- 23:52She could not get over that.
- 23:53Oh, that's funny.
- 23:57And then I watched the new Dune maybe a year ago.
- 24:04And it ends the same way.
- 24:05Yeah, I want to see the new one, but it's not out yet, is it?
- 24:11Yeah, you mean the second one?
- 24:13The new second one?
- 24:14Yeah.
- 24:14Yeah.
- 24:17Yeah, it's not out yet.
- 24:18I think they're just filming it now.
- 24:24I think they're just filming it now.
- 24:27Okay.
- 24:27I thought, I think, I don't know if it was Dune or maybe a different movie, but Jake said that it got like, it was supposed to come out at a certain time and then I think it got extended or something.
- 24:42I don't know.
- 24:42I don't know if that was Dune.
- 24:44I watched the first Lord of the Rings three times in theaters.
- 24:48Whoa.
- 24:50Yeah.
- 24:50It would be cool.
- 24:53Yeah.
- 24:54So like everything in Hollywood is delayed and I don't even know if you even know about this cause you're over in Bali, but there was a writers and actors strike.
- 25:04Oh, so maybe that was the reason why.
- 25:06Yeah.
- 25:07So when that was going on, all production of everything stopped.
- 25:10TV, movies, everything.
- 25:13So in the States, we have a fall season of TV that starts September, October.
- 25:20That's starting in January, February this year.
- 25:24Whoa.
- 25:26Because of the strike.
- 25:29What's the strike about?
- 25:32So a lot of it is...
- 25:35I know more about the writers than the actors, but the writers was that basically if you're a writer on a show, you make nothing.
- 25:45You make nothing in royalties, even though you're the one who wrote the story that they're telling.
- 25:52And it wasn't even like a livable wage.
- 25:58and so um i know the actors back them and then with that then it's not the superstars that aren't getting paid actor wise it was more about the you know that i don't know what to call them you know your character actors that come in and fill in the the other roles right uh and then yeah kenneth also said and actors didn't want to give up their likeness for ai uses or something as well
- 26:28Because studios were threatening to use AI to fill in them.
- 26:33And that wasn't in the contract.
- 26:37And so they went on strike to fight to not allow that to happen.
- 26:42Man, AI is crazy.
- 26:44Some of the stuff they can do nowadays is insane.
- 26:49You know what's funny, though?
- 26:50I think it's a neat party trick when it first came out.
- 26:57And everybody's like, oh my gosh, this is going to take over the world.
- 27:02So I've tried to use AI to help me produce some of the show.
- 27:09It's terrible.
- 27:12It doesn't really know anything about CrossFit or it doesn't really know how to do that stuff.
- 27:22And then my friend is a college professor and I said, how hard is it to grade papers now?
- 27:28with AI because, you know, you can say chat GPT, write me a paper on Alexander Hamilton and blah, blah, blah.
- 27:36She said it is, yes, it can do that, but it is very easy to tell that it was done by AI.
- 27:42Right.
- 27:44Well, cause I was watching Joe Rogan or something and he was saying that the chat GPT actually doesn't really know.
- 27:50It just takes stuff off of like
- 27:52the internet when where you would go and look up something anyways and even that like you don't know if it's it's not like a reviewed pre or reviewed paper whatever right like it's just like google where anyone's putting that information in so it could be wrong yeah it's uh
- 28:13So I think we're a long way from like true AI.
- 28:18I think it does some party tricks that impress people like on the surface.
- 28:22But like when you dig down in.
- 28:25Yeah.
- 28:28She said like one thing you can really tell which with if you use AI to write your paper is it actually speaks like English is not its first language.
- 28:42So the grammar is off just enough where you can tell.
- 28:46Plus she said they have like three types of software that are designed just to pick up AI.
- 28:52So these kids are just using this and not going over the paper and like changing stuff like that.
- 29:00Yeah.
- 29:01I'm sorry, but like lazy pieces of POS, like,
- 29:11Oh my gosh.
- 29:14What are we doing?
- 29:17Kids don't want to work these days.
- 29:20They don't want to write a paper.
- 29:22Why are you going to school then?
- 29:24Just to ask a robot to write your paper?
- 29:31It's life, right?
- 29:32There are people that want to take the easy route and people that are willing to put in the work.
- 29:43yeah but yeah interesting conversation I do have one more thing before we let you go for sure and we can talk more if you want but something that I've always been interested in is mouth taping however it scares the living shit out of me
- 30:03because of all the sinus surgeries I've had this year, like when my nose clogs up, I'm afraid I would suffocate and die.
- 30:13Yeah.
- 30:15I mean, have you read the book breath?
- 30:19I have not.
- 30:21So you have been doing it.
- 30:24I'm going to share my screen.
- 30:27Um,
- 30:31So here's you taping up the mouth.
- 30:34Did I see you put like a mouthpiece in first?
- 30:38Yeah, a mouth guard.
- 30:40Is that for the taping or something else?
- 30:43No, it's for like lately my jaw has just been killing me and it's been like popping when I close it.
- 30:50And the physio said like you've got some underlying stress or something because you must be like grinding in your sleep or whatever.
- 30:59he felt my C2 and was like, yeah, those are so tight.
- 31:03And what I think it is, is like, yeah, a little bit of stress, maybe grinding at night, but also like in my computer, I'm always looking down.
- 31:11I need to figure out, I need to buy one of those things that gets my computer.
- 31:14So then it's a little bit higher.
- 31:16So I'm not looking down.
- 31:17It's not even that much, but even just that much, I think is kind of like messing with my spine and like
- 31:24bringing my shoulders, rolling my shoulders a little bit forward.
- 31:28And I do try to think about it and like open things up.
- 31:31But when you get into like, when you get hard into work, you just start, you know, like getting into this bad posture.
- 31:40So I think that that's been kind of going on.
- 31:42And then just like the little bit of stress, I think I've been grinding because even when I work out.
- 31:47So the reason that I got this mouth guard was because when I work out, sometimes I'll feel that I've been grinding.
- 31:54And so then like, Oh, crap, I need to wear my mouth guard.
- 31:57And it doesn't happen all the time.
- 31:58But I'll just have to wear it for like, a couple days.
- 32:01And then it goes away.
- 32:02And then I stopped grinding.
- 32:06But yeah, I must be doing it in my sleep or something for my jaw to be this sore.
- 32:11So how weird is it when you first tape your mouth?
- 32:19It's a little scary at first because I'm kind of the same way.
- 32:21I have claustrophobia.
- 32:23I hate little spaces and that kind of feels like that.
- 32:28The first time I did it, I was like, oh my gosh.
- 32:31Honestly, it was nice.
- 32:35I'm a firm believer of nasal breathing because I started box breathing about four years ago.
- 32:41It helped me in so many different ways.
- 32:45It helped me with my anxiety.
- 32:47It helped me with my
- 32:48I felt it right away help me with my, like, aerobic capacity.
- 32:53And, like, if you read the book Breath, it's actually insane.
- 32:57And it's not only because of the stuff that I read on Breath.
- 33:01It's from me feeling it as well, feeling the difference.
- 33:06But, yeah, it's a little bit scary at first.
- 33:09But once you get used to it, it's fine.
- 33:12And once, like, it's supposed to help with, like,
- 33:16nasal i don't know what what you had like with your surgeries and stuff but it's supposed to help with so many things and the guy in the book breath like they do um these different experiments where for a full week or two weeks or something they only breathe with their mouth and they start getting like i can't remember the exact things that they start getting but like they start getting sick and they start getting where they feel like shit and
- 33:44Um, whatever else, and then they, they switch it where they start breathing only with their nose and these things start going away like that.
- 33:52And they, he's, he's exercising with it and his, again, his aerobic capacity starts feeling, you know, like where he starts building the aerobic capacity, like super fast and he starts feeling really good.
- 34:04You know, the sickness starts going away, starts to go away and stuff like that.
- 34:08So.
- 34:10not only just like the book and his experiment, but I've felt those things myself.
- 34:14So yeah.
- 34:17Well, I know when I, when I work out and if I'm breathing through my nose, my workout goes way better.
- 34:23Like it just like, and I feel like the quality of air I get through my nose is much better than breathing through my mouth.
- 34:31I just have this fear that I'm going to clog up and drown in my own phlegm.
- 34:39some night yeah um so maybe it's something i try a little bit in the day for sure yeah the first incorporate every once in a while like it doesn't have to be every night at first like you can kind of just try um and i think that you're you would be smart enough to like rip it off yourself even when you're asleep because like it's funny a couple like a couple nights ago
- 35:07I remember I was still a little bit asleep, still delirious.
- 35:10And I like just took it off.
- 35:15I woke up in the morning.
- 35:16I was like, what the heck?
- 35:17I don't have my tape on anymore, but I do cut like vaguely remember ripping it off.
- 35:22And Jake did the same thing.
- 35:23He's like, where's my tape?
- 35:25He's like, I think I pulled it off last night, but yeah, it might be worth just trying while you're awake and then experiment when you're asleep.
- 35:34Just like once a,
- 35:36Every couple days or something.
- 35:39And you get those from Wadden Dunn?
- 35:42Yeah, like their tape is for your thumbs and everything, obviously.
- 35:46But they have like a thinner tape that's for your thumbs.
- 35:50And I cut mine in half and in half.
- 35:53So mine's like a little strip.
- 35:54Actually, I'll just grab one and I'll show you.
- 36:02So...
- 36:08Wadden Dunn has thicker tape and then they also have like this thinner tape.
- 36:13So I'll cut this in half and then in half and it makes four of these little things and it fits just nicely.
- 36:25Do they know people are using it for that?
- 36:30I don't know.
- 36:31I was wondering if they would see my post.
- 36:33Cause I used to get their tape from them.
- 36:35They used to send me their tape.
- 36:37And then when I got sponsored by Ex Podium, Ex Podium was giving me tape.
- 36:42So I stopped with them.
- 36:45But I just found that it was the best tape that it stuck the best.
- 36:50Cause I've used like scotch tape at first.
- 36:52I was using scotch tape and that was disgusting.
- 36:55Even like the smell of it.
- 36:56I was like, why am I using this?
- 37:00But yeah.
- 37:01It's just really sticky, and it's nice if you're a guy and have, like, facial hair.
- 37:06I would use, like, obviously a bigger piece.
- 37:09But that's why I do this.
- 37:11Not that I have a freaking beard, but it just fits right on the mouth, so it's nice.
- 37:20And you cannot breathe through your mouth when you do that?
- 37:22No.
- 37:25like if you really tried, like I can kind of talk a little bit.
- 37:29I'm like, I have to say something to Jake.
- 37:32So like, obviously a little bit of air is coming out, but it makes it mostly just makes you breathe through your nose.
- 37:41So it's also ventriloquist training.
- 37:44Yeah.
- 37:45That is hilarious.
- 37:46You say that because I was actually trying ventriloquism.
- 37:49I was like, Jake, I think I'm going to become a ventriloquist.
- 37:52Cause I love ventriloquism.
- 37:53Like my guilty pleasure is watching America's Got Talent or Britain's Got Talent.
- 37:58And there's a couple of friend chiller quests on there and they sing.
- 38:02It's insane.
- 38:03And so I was trying it and he was like, oh, you're actually like kind of good at some words.
- 38:11But I was like singing with my mouth closed and it was kind of fun.
- 38:15So that might be my next profession.
- 38:19Oh, that's hilarious.
- 38:20Yeah, we watch that show too.
- 38:22I love it.
- 38:26I don't even remember what I was going to say.
- 38:31I still think I have a ton of the Wadden Dunn tape.
- 38:34I love it for a thumb tape.
- 38:36It's so easy to get on pretty quick.
- 38:44I never liked the grips, but I did like the thumb tape.
- 38:48That was the same with me, and so I just asked them to send me thumb tape, and that was it.
- 38:53I got used to my grips, right?
- 38:54And using that was just, it would have taken too much to try to get used to it.
- 39:03Yeah, being a big guy, I have rubber grips, like the Chocolis grips, and I love those.
- 39:13I feel like when I get up there, I like it.
- 39:16What's that?
- 39:18Are those Victory Grip ones?
- 39:20So they're actually Element 26.
- 39:25Okay.
- 39:25I've never heard of that.
- 39:28Yeah, they have Danny Spiegel is one of their athletes, James Sprague.
- 39:35Okay.
- 39:37So we were actually sponsored by them for a minute.
- 39:41Um, and so that's one of the things that gave me to, to, to use.
- 39:47And I, I love them.
- 39:48I, I've never used anything since house.
- 39:52Yeah.
- 39:53The company like X podium who I'm sponsored by, they just came out with these sticky grips.
- 39:59They are in like, I swear they just glue you.
- 40:05to the bar and I've used victory grips and those are really great too.
- 40:09Like, I love that you don't have to use chalk on those tactical grips, but these, like, I, I just love X podium, especially too, because like none of their grips, you have to use a chalk or one kind of their grips actually.
- 40:23But yeah, the ones that I use are these carbon fiber ones and they also like stick really well.
- 40:29But then all of a sudden my, my training partner who just got here, Aaron, he brought me a pair of sticky grips and
- 40:35They're insane.
- 40:37It's, yeah, it's crazy.
- 40:39And they're cool colors too.
- 40:41So I was like, Oh, this is perfect.
- 40:42I got some crazy pink grips that just stick to the bar.
- 40:47That's awesome.
- 40:47That's how I feel about the chocolates ones from element 26.
- 40:50I, I can probably get, cause I'm not like back to full gymnastics.
- 40:56So like I can get five more knees to chest when I'm wearing the grips and I can't, if I'm not, um, so, um,
- 41:04Yeah, I used to be a very complex guy.
- 41:06I had the carbon fiber, very complex for a while.
- 41:10But I don't like chalk.
- 41:12I'm so anti-CrossFit when it comes to that.
- 41:17I hate chalk on a barbell.
- 41:19I hate chalk on a pull-up bar.
- 41:21You come to me then, and then tell me that.
- 41:26Or you're just sweating bags everywhere, and you need it here.
- 41:35Yeah, I mean, it gets hot and humid in the summer here.
- 41:37I've never ever, my whole life, playing football, powerlifting, I've never chalked the bar.
- 41:46What?
- 41:47Never.
- 41:48You just got good grip.
- 41:50Yeah, I just, it's just what I've done my whole life.
- 41:54So like, and now I'm to the age like where I'm not maxing out much.
- 42:01You know what I mean?
- 42:01Like I'm just doing some reps.
- 42:04And so to me, I lose that break though too.
- 42:08Like I can't stop and chalk up if I don't chalk.
- 42:11That's true.
- 42:13I have to tighten the clips every once in a while.
- 42:16And not, yeah.
- 42:20That's so nice.
- 42:21I do try to practice with that sometimes, but I'm a little chalk monster.
- 42:27I just dive right in there.
- 42:29Yeah, I think I remember in Pasadena last year, every time I saw you, you were covered.
- 42:37It's because I do my ass slap too before I do this.
- 42:43So then I have them on my, yeah.
- 42:55anything else going on or anything else you want to talk about this has been a great one of our longest episodes and we're just like shooting shit it's just a good chat I love the shooting the shit not really my best friend and I started a podcast so I thought I would tell you that just because yeah you're the podcast man that I'm super excited about
- 43:19She's trying to take competitors.
- 43:24We're competitors.
- 43:26No, ours is just like fun and we're going to try to do some educational stuff as well.
- 43:32She's a nutritionist and obviously I'm like I coach gymnastics and one-on-one and yeah, it's just, we wanted to try it.
- 43:43We've been talking about it for a year, so yeah.
- 43:48Super cool.
- 43:49I know where to come if you have any questions.
- 43:52I'd love to help you out.
- 43:55I would appreciate it a ton.
- 44:00My last question to you is, when does the Bali season end and when are you heading back to this hemisphere?
- 44:10We fly back on January 25th.
- 44:15Okay.
- 44:17So about a month before the open.
- 44:20Yeah.
- 44:23And then does Jake have to go back to firefighting?
- 44:27Not until April.
- 44:28Okay.
- 44:29Well, that's cool.
- 44:31Get to hang out for a little bit.
- 44:34That would be nice.
- 44:35We're going to go do a couple snow activities since we haven't in the last couple of years.
- 44:40We're going to try to go to the Nordic Spa over in
- 44:44uh, Kananaskis and we're going to Revelstoke to go snowboarding.
- 44:48A couple of really cool spots.
- 44:51Um, yeah, I'm pretty excited because I haven't had like a true winter yet.
- 44:56So in a, in a couple of years.
- 44:59Yeah.
- 45:00Yeah.
- 45:01Um, for the listeners next week, we're going to do a special holiday edition where we're doing 20 questions, um,
- 45:11You're going to ask 10.
- 45:12I'm going to ask 10.
- 45:14And we both have to answer all 20 questions?
- 45:19Yeah, I think so.
- 45:20That'd be cool.
- 45:22And I'll put it out to my listeners.
- 45:25If there are any questions you want me to ask, throw them in the chat.
- 45:30And we'll write those down and let you author some of the 20 questions.
- 45:34And I'll put this up on Instagram as well and try to get some there to see if we can get some interesting questions.
- 45:44They can be anything.
- 45:46Anything.
- 45:47They can be holiday, CrossFit, music, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings.
- 45:54Anything.
- 45:55Yeah.
- 45:56Anything you can think of that you want to know.
- 45:59What Lord of the Rings character do you exemplifies you the most?
- 46:07Ooh.
- 46:10My precious.
- 46:11Just kidding.
- 46:15Oh, probably.
- 46:16Yeah, exactly.
- 46:19All right.
- 46:20Well, thank you, everybody who's been here tonight.
- 46:24We'll be back next week with some fun questions.
- 46:27And Hattie, thank you so much for hanging out with me for a little bit of time and having a blast.
- 46:31We'll catch everybody next time on Fitness and Fun in Bali with Hattie Cano.
- 46:37Bye, guys.
