- 0:11Hello, friends. It's Sean.
- 0:13Here it is Monday, it's the 23rd of March.
- 0:17And hey, it is great to have your company.
- 0:20Thank you for tuning in on your wireless or perhaps no one's
- 0:25actually tuning in on the wireless and hasn't done that
- 0:27for a very long time. But thank you for your company
- 0:30as we are going to be continuing reading through this fantastic
- 0:34gospel of Mark walking the streets, rowing the boats,
- 0:39walking the shores, having the crowds pressed up against us as
- 0:43everybody, everybody just wants a piece of Jesus.
- 0:48Isn't it funny how society now wants very little to do with
- 0:52Jesus? I guess they just don't know
- 0:54him. And if they did know him, things
- 0:56would be different, wouldn't they?
- 0:58But we will discover more of this as we read together.
- 1:01So how about let's dive into it, friends.
- 1:03Holy Spirit, come convict us of your truth as we read this
- 1:09gospel. All right friends, let's read
- 1:12together. Mark Chapter 7.
- 1:24One day some Pharisees and teachers of religious law
- 1:27arrived from Jerusalem to see Jesus.
- 1:30They noticed that some of his disciples failed to follow the
- 1:32Jewish ritual of hand washing before eating.
- 1:35The Jews, especially the Pharisees, do not eat until they
- 1:39have poured water over their cupped hands as required by
- 1:42their ancient traditions. Similarly, they don't eat
- 1:45anything from the market until they immerse their hands in
- 1:48water. This is but one of many
- 1:51traditions they have clung to, such as their ceremonial washing
- 1:55of cups, pitches and cattles. So the Pharisees and teachers of
- 1:59religious law asked him, why don't your disciples follow our
- 2:03age old tradition? They eat without first
- 2:06performing the hand washing ceremony.
- 2:09Jesus replied, you hypocrites as I was right when he prophesied
- 2:14about you. For he wrote, these people
- 2:16honour me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.
- 2:20Their worship is a farce for they teach man made ideas as
- 2:25commands from God. For you ignore God's law and
- 2:28substitute your own tradition. Then he said, you skilfully
- 2:33sidestep God's law in order to hold on to your own tradition.
- 2:37For instance, Moses gave you this law from God, honour your
- 2:41father and mother, and anyone who speaks disrespectfully of
- 2:46father or mother must be put to death.
- 2:49But you say it is all right for people to say to their parents,
- 2:52sorry, I can't help you, for I vowed to give to God what I
- 2:55would have given to you. In this way, you let them
- 2:59disregard their needy parents, and so you cancel the word of
- 3:03God in order to hand down your own tradition.
- 3:07And this is only one example among many others.
- 3:11Then Jesus called to the crowd to come and hear all of you
- 3:15listen, he said, and try to understand.
- 3:18It's not what goes into your body that defiles you.
- 3:21You are defiled by what comes from your heart.
- 3:25Then Jesus went into a house to get away from the crowd, and his
- 3:29disciples asked him what he meant by the parable he had just
- 3:32used. Don't you understand either?
- 3:35He asked. Can't you see that the food you
- 3:38put into your body cannot defile you?
- 3:40Food doesn't go into your heart, but only passes through your
- 3:44stomach and then goes into the sewer.
- 3:46By saying this, he declared that every kind of food is acceptable
- 3:50in God's eyes. And then he added, it is what
- 3:54comes from inside that defiles you.
- 3:57For from within, out of a person's heart, come evil
- 4:01thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed,
- 4:06wickedness, deceit, lustful desires, envy, slander, pride
- 4:12and foolishness. All these vile things come from
- 4:15within. They are what defile you.
- 4:20Then Jesus left Galilee and went N to the region of Tyre.
- 4:24He didn't want anyone to know which house he was staying in,
- 4:28but he couldn't keep it a secret.
- 4:29Right away a woman who had heard about him came and fell at his
- 4:33feet. Her little girl was possessed by
- 4:35an evil spirit and she begged him to cast out the demon from
- 4:39her daughter, since she was a Gentile born in Syrian
- 4:43Phoenicia. Jesus told her first, I should
- 4:46feed the children, my own family, the Jews.
- 4:50It isn't right to take food from the children and throw it to the
- 4:53dogs, she replied. That's right, Lord.
- 4:57But even the dogs under the table are allowed to eat the
- 4:59scraps from the children's plates.
- 5:02Good answer, he said. Now go home, for the demon has
- 5:06left your daughter. And when she arrived home, she
- 5:09found a little girl lying quietly in bed, and the demon
- 5:13was gone. Jesus left Tyre and went up to
- 5:17Sidon before going back to the Sea of Galilee.
- 5:20In the region of the 10 towns, a deaf man with a speech
- 5:24impediment was brought to him, and the people begged Jesus to
- 5:27lay his hands on the man to heal them.
- 5:30Jesus led him away from the crowd so they could be alone.
- 5:34He put his fingers into the man's ears.
- 5:37Then, spitting on his own fingers, he touched the man's
- 5:40tongue. Looking up to heaven he sighed
- 5:43and said EF Fathah which means be opened instantly the man
- 5:50could hear perfectly and his tongue was freed so he could
- 5:53speak plainly. Jesus told the crowd not to tell
- 5:57anyone, but the more he told them not to, the more they
- 6:00spread the news. They were completely amazed and
- 6:03said again and again, everything he does is wonderful.
- 6:07He even makes the deaf to hear and gives speech to those that
- 6:11cannot speak. Our Lord Jesus, here you are
- 6:23once again turning things on their head.
- 6:26Where this culture believed that what you ate made you clean or
- 6:30unclean, You say no. It's what you give from your own
- 6:35inside, from your heart. Therein lies your cleanliness or
- 6:39uncleanliness. And Lord, you know our hearts.
- 6:44You know our hearts better than we know our hearts.
- 6:47And they are not clean, They are not pure.
- 6:51We have selfish desires. We have thoughts that are not
- 6:54befitting of you, our Lord. And so I just pray for your
- 6:58ongoing work of transformation. Holy Spirit, come and change our
- 7:03hearts every day. Make us more and more like you,
- 7:09so that the thoughts of our minds and the feelings of our
- 7:12hearts would be more and more as you would have them be, so that
- 7:18we can be a force for good in this world and bring about your
- 7:21Kingdom, your Kingdom of generosity and love and
- 7:24forgiveness, so opposed to the ways of the human heart.
- 7:31And thank you, Lord, that you are doing this work in US.
- 7:33And thank you that you are the perfect example of this way of
- 7:38being. So we just lift you up, our
- 7:41perfect example, our wonderful guide, our loving Saviour.
- 7:47We love you and pray all of this in your perfect name, Amen.
