The Cartaz System: How Portugal Taxed the Indian Ocean
In this episode, Lucas and Luna explore the cartaz system, the ingenious maritime pass that gave Portugal control over the Indian Ocean for nearly a century. Learn how Afonso de Albuquerque deployed this naval licensing scheme, how it taxed both enemy and ally alike, and why it ultimately failed as Portuguese power waned. Featuring the corsair Khoja Zamber, the Portuguese fort at Diu, and the rise of rival powers like the Ottomans and the Dutch, this episode reveals the true engine of Portugal's commercial empire.
