- 0:00Book Ie Ostradshan the Tournament. The scene of the epic is the ancient kingdom
- 0:11of the Curus, which flourished along the upper course of the Ganges, and
- 0:16the historical fact on which the epic is based is a great war which took
- 0:20place between the Curus and the neighboring tribe the Panchals, in the thirteenth or
- 0:25fourteenth century before Christ. According to the epic, Pandu and Triturastra, who
- 0:31was born blind, were brothers. Pandu died early, and Triturastri became king
- 0:37of the Curus and brought up the five sons of Pandu along with his hundred
- 0:42sons. Yudistir, the eldest son of Pandu, was a man of truth
- 0:47and piety. Weim the second, was a stalwart fighter and urgent. The
- 0:53Thirtsen distinguished himself above all the other princes in arms. The two youngest brothers,
- 1:00Nachol and Sahadeb, were twins. The Ludhan was the eldest son of
- 1:06Teterastra and was jealous of his cousins, the sons of Pandu. A tournament
- 1:11was held, and in the course of the day, a warrior named Kern
- 1:15of unknown origin appeared on the scene and proved himself a wardy arrival of Urjin.
- 1:22The rivalry between Urgin and Kern is the leading tod of the epic,
- 1:26as the rivalry between Achilus and Haktor is the leading toad of the Iliad.
- 1:32It is only necessary to add that the sons of Pandu as well as Kern,
- 1:36were, like the heroes of Homer, god born chiefs. Some God
- 1:41inspired the birth of each. It is there was the son of Term or
- 1:46Virtue, Viam of Vayu or Wind, Urgin of Indra or Rain God.
- 1:53The twin youngest were the sons of the Ashen twins, and Kern was the
- 1:57son of Surya the Sun, but was believed by himself and by all others,
- 2:02to be the son of a simple chariot driver. The portion translated in
- 2:08this book forms sections one thirty four to one thirty seven of Book one of
- 2:13the original Epic. In Sanskrit calcuttadition of eighteen thirty four one the gathering wrathful

- 9:15Proud sounds like these from surging myriads rose in tumult, deep and loud,
- 9:22and with troubled vision. Joan marked the heaving, restless plain, marked
- 9:26the crowd by anger, shaken like the tempest, shaken Mane to his son.
- 9:33Then whispered drone quaked, the tumult to appease parted. The armed and
- 9:37angry wrestlers bid the deadly combat seas with their lifted clubs. The princess slowly
- 9:45tired. On signal given like the parting of the bellows, mighty heaving tempest

- 11:03and vaaliant, peerless in his scale of arms. Mark the pure, souled,
- 11:09pious chieftane, decked with grace and varied charms. Pretty heard such grateful
- 11:16voices borne aloft unto the sky. The milk of love suffused her bosom.
- 11:20Tear of joy was in her eye, and who arrested Koru's monarch. Joyous
- 11:26accents struck his ear, and he turned to wise withdeur, seeking for the
- 11:31cause to hear. Wherefore, like the voice of ocean, when the tempedes
- 11:37twins, prevail raised these voices of the people and the species skies, assail
- 11:43answered him, the wise videour. It is prettiest gallant boy, godlike moves
- 11:48in golden armor, and the people shout for joy. Please them, I
- 11:54so speak the monarch, and I bless my happy faith Prita's son, like
- 12:00fires of Yega sanctified his mighty state. Now the voices of the people died
- 12:07away, and all was steel urgent to his proud preceptor showed his might and
- 12:13matchless skill, towering high or lowly, bending on the turf or on his
- 12:18car. With his bow and glistening arrows, Urgent waised the mimic war targets
- 12:26on the wide arena, mighty tough for wondrous small. With his arrows bright
- 12:31and failing, Urgent pierced them one and all. Wild boar, shaped of
- 12:37solid iron, coursed a wide, extending field in its jaws. Five glistening
- 12:41arrows sent the archer, wondrous keeled cow horn by a tread suspended was by
- 12:48winds, unseizing swedes one and twenty well lamed arrows. On this moving mark
- 12:54he laid andet equal skill. His rapier did the god like urgin wild whirling
- 13:01round. His maze of battle ranged a specious thorny field. Five the advance
- 13:09of Kern. Now the feats of arm are ended, and the closing hour
- 13:16draws nigh. Music's voices hushed in silence and dispersing crowds pass by, hark
- 13:24like vulcan shaking thunder wakes a deep and deadly sound. Clank, and dean
- 13:30of warlike weapons burst upon the tanted ground. Are the solid mountain splitting?
- 13:37Is it bursting off the art? Is it tempest spelling accent? Whence the
- 13:41lightning takes its part. Thoughts like these alarm the people, for the sound
- 13:48is dread and high. To the gate of the Dirhna turns the crowd with
- 13:52anxious eye, gathered round Preceptor Drona, ponder suns in armor, bright like
- 14:00the five starred constellation, round the radiant Queen of Night, Gathered round the

- 14:54radiance, for the sun inspired his bird like a tuskar in his theory,
- 15:01like a lion in his ear, like the sun in untide radiance, like
- 15:05the all consuming fire lion like in build and muscle, stately as a golden
- 15:11palm, blessed every very manly virtue, pearless warrior, proud and calm,
- 15:20with his looks, serene and lofty feel the world. The chiefs surveyed scarce
- 15:24to creep our Authodrona honor and obeisance made still the panic stricken people who viewed
- 15:33him with unmoving gage. Who may be this unknown warrior? Questioned Day in
- 15:37harsh damaze. Then in voice of pealing thunder, spake fair Pritta's eldest son,
- 15:46Unturton, Pritta's youngest. He tell us to each unknown all their feats
- 15:54of weapons. Sur Jean done it, vain and needless, boast these and
- 15:58grat the ry accomplish witness be this mighty host. Thus spake proud and peerless
- 16:06carn in his accents, deep and loud, and as moved by sudden impulse,
- 16:11lived in joyed the listening crowd, and the gleam of mighty transport glows
- 16:18in proud Doruthan's heart, flames of red and jealous anger from the eyes of
- 16:22urgent start Drone gave the word and Kern Pritha's war beloving son what his sword,
- 16:30and with his arrows did the feats by Arjun Dunn six the rival warriors.
- 16:42Joyful was the proud Douruthan. Gladness gleamed upon his face, and he
- 16:48spake to Gallant Kern with a dear and fond embrace. Welcome, mighty armed
- 16:55chieftain, Thou hast Victor's honors won. Thine is all my wealthon kingdom named
- 17:03I wish, and it is done, answered Karne to Tyudin, Prince,
- 17:08thy ward is good as deed, But I seek to combat Urjeun and to
- 17:14win the victor's mead. Noble is the boon thou seekest, answered Curuz,
- 17:21Prince of fame, be a joy unto your comrades. Let the foreman dread
- 17:26thy name anger flamed in Urgent's bosom, and he spake in excellence route unto
- 17:34Kern, who in triumph, calm and proud and fearless, toute chief,
- 17:41who comest uninvited, prattest in thy lying boast, thou shalt die the deaths
- 17:47of Braggart's witness be this mighty host. Krne answered, calm and proudly freed
- 17:55is listed field to all warriors enter by theirroys wait not Urgent for thy call.
- 18:03Warlike chieftains take their places by their strength of arm and miThe and their
- 18:08warranties. Derfalcian valor sanctifies their right. Angry word is Covered's weapon. Urgin
- 18:17speak with arrow scheme till I lady witness. Drone low upon the listed green.
- 18:26Drone gave the word impartial, wrathful. Urgin, dread of foes,
- 18:30parted from his loving plodders with his glistening arms. Arose Kurn clasped the Kouru
- 18:37princess, parted from them one and all with his bow and ample quiver,
- 18:42proudly stepped the warrior tall. Now the cloud sweetly reflashes scattered, darkling,
- 18:49thick and high lines of cranes, like glimpse of laughter sailed across the gloomy
- 18:56sky. Rain get in and over. Urgent watched it. Father's partial love
- 19:03sun goatsurya over Kern shed his light from far above. Urgent stood in darkening
- 19:11shadow by the inky clouds, concealed bold and bright in open shan sign Radiant
- 19:18Curn stood revealed proud dourioth And and his brothers stood by Kern, calm and
- 19:26bold. Drone stood by gallant Urchin and brave Pishma warrior. Old women too,
- 19:33with partial glances, viewed the one or other chief, but by equal
- 19:38love divided silent Prita swound in grief, wise widure, true to duty with
- 19:47an anxious hurricane, sandal drops and sprinkled waters, ruised to wood, distracted
- 19:53dam and she saw her sons in combat. Words of Wushi, a uttered
- 20:00nun, speechless weft, for none must fathom. Kern was her eldest son,
- 20:08seventh. The anointment of Kern crested Kern. Helm Durgin proudly trod the
- 20:18specious green creepers killed in Herald's duties, spake upon the dreadful scene. This
- 20:26is Helmut, wearing urgent, sprung of Kuru's mighty race, Pondu's son and
- 20:30born by Pritha. Prince ovot and warlike kras long armed Chief decleared thy lineage,
- 20:40and the raised Dadostradorn named thy mother and thy father, and the house
- 20:45that saw deborn by the rules of war. Prince Urgent claims his rival Chief
- 20:51to know Princess may not draw the weapon against a base and nameless foe.
- 20:57Kern silent, hard, dismantate, but his bart could not proclaim like a
- 21:04range repelled the lotus bent his humble head in shame. Prince Urakan cried the
- 21:11Rudan, not the man on board alone, warlike leader of his forces,
- 21:18as a prince and chief, we won Kern by his warlike valor. Is
- 21:22of crowned kings. To appear, Kern shall be crowned. Monarch nations sell
- 21:27dismandate. Here Foto brought the corn and treasure, golden coin and water jar
- 21:37on the throne. The seated Kern famed in many a deathful war. Brahmans
- 21:42chanted sacred mantra which the Holy Books ordained and anointed Kern monarch king of Angus
- 21:49feared domain. And they raised a red umbrella, and they waved the Jorifan
- 21:57blessings on the crowned monarch. Honor to the bravest man. Now the Holy
- 22:03Rites accomplished in his kingly robes, Arrayedkurn unto Prince Dourudan. Thus, in
- 22:10grateful accents, prayed gift of kingdom good to Rudan. Speak at welth thy
- 22:17noble heart. What return can grateful kurn hamly render on his part, grant
- 22:23thy friendship cried to Ruthan, for no other boon, I crave meet e
- 22:30Ruthan's dearest comrade, be his helper, true and brave be it. So
- 22:36responded Kern with a proud and noble grace, and he sealed his loyal friendship
- 22:42in a tear and fond and braves. Eighth, the chariot driver wet to
- 22:53jomps of toil and languor lo a chariot driver came loosely hung his can garments
- 23:00and the stuff of felt his frame corn, now a crowned monarch to the
- 23:06humble chariot tear bent his head steell moist to its water as unto apparent tear
- 23:14with his canty clot. The driver sought his dusty feet to hide, and
- 23:18he hailed the gallant Kern as his son and as his pride. And he
- 23:23clasped unto his bosom crowned corn his noble head, and on Kern's dripping forehead,
- 23:30fresh and loving tear droff said, is his son of chariot driver.
- 23:36Thouts arose in Weam's mind, and he sought to humble Kern with reproachful words.
- 23:41Unkind wilt taou high descended hero which a crew crossed thy brand, But
- 23:48the gold of cattle driver's better soothes my friend. Thy hand wilt taou as
- 23:55a crowned monarch, cruel a mightination's wail, as the jackals of the jungle
- 24:00sacrifice an offering, steel quivered currents leaves in anger ward. The one sir
- 24:07speak in none, but a deep sigh shook his bosom, and he gazed
- 24:12upon the sun nine close of the day, like a lordly tasker rising from
- 24:23a beauteous lotus lake rose, do rudan from his brothers, proudly does to
- 24:29beam, spake with such insults, seek not vim does to cause a warrior
- 24:36grief bitter tons, but ill befit the warlike tiger, rested chief. Proudest
- 24:42chief may fight the humblest, for like Reaver's noble course, noble deeds,
- 24:48proclaimed a warrior, and we question not their sores. Teacher, drone,
- 24:53prist and warrior owns a poor and humble part creeper noblest of God thom spring
- 25:00it from the lowly art known to me thy line, his weam dying,
- 25:06and of thy brother's fore amorous gods, your bart inspired, so they say
- 25:11in days of yore, mark'd a great and gallant carn, tacked in rings
- 25:17and weapons. Fair she dear breeds, not lordly tigers, in her poor
- 25:22and lowly lair. Curn comes to rule the wide art, not fair ungle's
- 25:26dreams alone, by his valor and his weapons, by the homage which I
- 25:32own an. If prince or arm chieftain doth my ward or deed gainsay,
- 25:38let him take his bow and quiver meet me in a deadly fray. Loud
- 25:44applauses greet the challenge and the people's joyful cry. But the thickening shehades of
- 25:49darkness filled art and evening sky, and the red lamb's fitful lusher shone upon
- 25:57the field around slowly with the peerless Karn, proud Douryothan left the ground.
- 26:06Pondo's son suit warlike drone marked the darksome clothes of the day, and it
- 26:11creep and ud Vishma homeward silent banned their way. Urgin is the gallant victor,
- 26:18valiant kern as one the day. Prince Douryuthan is the winner. Various
- 26:25does the people say by some secret sign. Apprized Briton knew her gallant boy
- 26:32saw him crowned King Avanga with a moder's sacred joy and its greater joy.
- 26:37Durudan fastened Curne to his side, feared no longer Urgin's proise Urgin's skills of
- 26:45arms and pride. Even JUDISTI reckoned Kern, mighty warrior on the Earth,
- 26:52half misdoubted Urgin's proise Urgin skill and warlike world. End off, Book one,
