- 0:01Speaker 1: Speaking of things we pay attention to. Yes, sure the
- 0:04Speaker 1: world is in turmoil, American politics, is it a standstill?
- 0:11Speaker 1: You know, there's only one thing I care about. So
- 0:15Speaker 1: here's the setup. I don't think I was even aware
- 0:19Speaker 1: of the really weird back and forth, especially among some conservatives,
- 0:24Speaker 1: about the honesty.
- 0:25Speaker 2: I did something crazy.
- 0:26Speaker 1: I said, at least we were going to go, let's
- 0:28Speaker 1: just go see if it's a pretty good movie, and
- 0:30Speaker 1: we really thoroughly enjoyed it. So coming out of that,
- 0:33Speaker 1: I've seen all of the carping and the sniping in
- 0:36Speaker 1: the back and forth, and here you were ready to go.
- 0:39Speaker 1: You went last night. We'll talk in detail about what's
- 0:42Speaker 1: behind everybody's war of words about it. We'll do that
- 0:45Speaker 1: in the M and M Extra podcast or to whatever
- 0:49Speaker 1: extent you want to right now. But the first thing
- 0:50Speaker 1: I need to know, just purely as art, did you
- 0:53Speaker 1: think it was okay?
- 0:55Speaker 3: Well, let's start with just saying that I did what
- 0:57Speaker 3: you and Lisia did. I decided to ignore all the
- 0:59Speaker 3: chat or in the narrative, in the noise, and say
- 1:02Speaker 3: I'm gonna go see a movie that is obviously everybody's
- 1:05Speaker 3: talking about, must be popular. It took me a week
- 1:08Speaker 3: to be able to get a seat at the theater
- 1:11Speaker 3: and went into that big Imax thing with all my gosh,
- 1:15Speaker 3: wow yeah, And incidentally, that's the way to see it
- 1:19Speaker 3: and hear it and hear it. My goodness, what allowed movie.
- 1:23Speaker 3: Let me just put it this way. You've got to
- 1:25Speaker 3: work really, really hard. You gotta really work. It's some
- 1:32Speaker 3: real heavy lifting to hate on this epic movie. If
- 1:36Speaker 3: you hate this movie, you're going out of your way.
- 1:39Speaker 3: You're you're twisting yourself in more pretzels than a visit
- 1:43Speaker 3: over at any ends. That thing is an epic of
- 1:47Speaker 3: incredible scope and magnitude. It is beautifully shot. Incidentally, no
- 1:55Speaker 3: cgi I read they went out and shot that thing
- 1:59Speaker 3: on the boat.
- 2:00Speaker 2: By the way, that one you're on the ocean.
- 2:02Speaker 3: You're on the ocean and you get the waves. That's
- 2:04Speaker 3: all real water in there. But but the movie is epic. Now,
- 2:09Speaker 3: let me and I loved it. I loved every minute
- 2:12Speaker 3: of it. If it was three hours, I didn't notice.
- 2:14Speaker 3: But let me fifty three and I need to look
- 2:16Speaker 3: at my watch once, not one time, not one time. Now,
- 2:19Speaker 3: But let me stipulate something, Mark, and let's be obvious
- 2:22Speaker 3: about this. Where you're going I'm gonna say, it's not
- 2:25Speaker 3: everybody's cup of tea. There's all. It's three hours for
- 2:28Speaker 3: some people that won't, that won't, that won't pass the
- 2:31Speaker 3: smell test. They don't want to sit in a movie
- 2:32Speaker 3: for three hours. Okay, it's violent, very violent movie. Not
- 2:36Speaker 3: going to be everybody's cup of tea. There's language in it.
- 2:39Speaker 3: I'm not real sure people of that era slung around
- 2:42Speaker 3: the F bomb.
- 2:44Speaker 2: I know it is modernized in a lot of ways.
- 2:46Speaker 3: Correct so and but that, but listen, that won't be
- 2:49Speaker 3: everybody's cup of tea. But if you can ignore being
- 2:54Speaker 3: told you're not supposed to like something, and it is
- 2:57Speaker 3: and and Mark, I could you know we don't need
- 2:59Speaker 3: to break this down on the podcast. We can try.
- 3:02Speaker 3: It takes five seconds. It's all to do with the casting,
- 3:05Speaker 3: that's all it is. It's the casting. People don't like
- 3:09Speaker 3: a black Helen of Troy. People don't like Ellen Page,
- 3:12Speaker 3: people don't or Elliott Page, whatever. People don't like it.
- 3:16Speaker 3: That's what they don't like. And so they're going in
- 3:18Speaker 3: there saying, I'm gonna hate this. Let me tell you something,
- 3:22Speaker 3: let me get this off my chat. I'm a little
- 3:23Speaker 3: fired up about this today.
- 3:24Speaker 2: I love it.
- 3:25Speaker 3: If you start worrying about the personal lives of movies stars,
- 3:29Speaker 3: you better go back to the twenties and the thirties
- 3:31Speaker 3: and go check out the history of Fatty Arbuckle or
- 3:34Speaker 3: any of these other people who lived ridiculously hedonistic, horrible lives.
- 3:40Speaker 3: If you obsess about the personal life of an actor,
- 3:45Speaker 3: you gotta go. You gotta go touch some grass, You
- 3:48Speaker 3: gotta go gaze at the stars a little bit and
- 3:50Speaker 3: take a breath, and just just stop looking for things
- 3:53Speaker 3: to be mad about. They are actors. They are Johnny
- 3:57Speaker 3: Depp is one of the most brilliant actors of our time.
- 4:00Speaker 3: I loathe him. I hate his politics. I hate the
- 4:03Speaker 3: way he moved out of the country because he hated
- 4:05Speaker 3: America so much, the country that made him rich and famous.
- 4:08Speaker 3: I resent that. But I can go to a movie
- 4:11Speaker 3: and be entertained by and I'm gonna go see and
- 4:15Speaker 3: did you see how they're ebenezer? Do you see how
- 4:17Speaker 3: they're bagging on the trailer already? Oh, it's the worst
- 4:19Speaker 3: trailer in the history of tailors. It's terrible. It's Johnny.
- 4:24Speaker 3: It's all about the casting and people get it in there.
- 4:28Speaker 3: It's social media it's I am so tired of everybody
- 4:33Speaker 3: looking for a reason to get mad.
- 4:35Speaker 1: Mark had enough to get genuinely met and by those
- 4:38Speaker 1: so here this is this that was a step away
- 4:40Speaker 1: from where I thought you were gonna go. You went
- 4:42Speaker 1: to a very good place. See if you'll come with
- 4:43Speaker 1: me on the place, I'll go. Okay, It's not like
- 4:46Speaker 1: they're wrong. If somebody wants to be persnakety and go
- 4:49Speaker 1: Helen de Troit wasn't black.
- 4:51Speaker 2: Fine.
- 4:52Speaker 1: If somebody wants to say that that the casting of
- 4:55Speaker 1: Elliott Page is kind of a wink and a nudge
- 4:58Speaker 1: to Hollywood wokeism, they're right about that too. But it
- 5:01Speaker 1: doesn't come up in the movie at all. There's nothing
- 5:03Speaker 1: preachy or woke or anything in the actual movie like
- 5:07Speaker 1: at all. If there is that woke messaging, woke politics,
- 5:11Speaker 1: things in a film that seek to beat you over
- 5:14Speaker 1: the head with a certain ideology, I'll be there too, Sam,
- 5:17Speaker 1: I don't have any need for that. But the movie
- 5:19Speaker 1: but does none of that people, as you say, cherry
- 5:22Speaker 1: picking looking for reasons, it's my word of the year.
- 5:25Speaker 1: It's performative. It's like, look how sensitive I am to
- 5:29Speaker 1: all the issues on trans ain't nobody more twisted off
- 5:32Speaker 1: about trans than I am. And I didn't give two
- 5:34Speaker 1: flips about Elliott Page on screen for three minutes.
- 5:38Speaker 3: Let me go with you and I enthusiastically. I respect
- 5:42Speaker 3: people who say, I'm not gonna pay one dime to Hollywood.
- 5:46Speaker 3: I'm not gonna rent, I'm not gonna order cable. I'm
- 5:49Speaker 3: not gonna go to Disney World. I'm gonna sit in
- 5:52Speaker 3: my house and be kind of upset at the world. Okay,
- 5:55Speaker 3: that knock yourself out. I mean, I hate to be
- 5:57Speaker 3: mean spirited here, but you I want to go out.
- 6:00Speaker 3: I want to leave my apartment. I want to go
- 6:02Speaker 3: to a movie. I like Disney World. Sue me, you
- 6:05Speaker 3: know you, but but I don't bag on people who
- 6:09Speaker 3: choose not to do that. You want to call me
- 6:12Speaker 3: a hypocrite for wanting to go to a getting out
- 6:14Speaker 3: of my huvele and go to a movie once in
- 6:17Speaker 3: a while, Okay, all right, knock yourself out, and I'm
- 6:20Speaker 3: not going to bag on you for choosing to live
- 6:25Speaker 3: like an Amish person. Okay, don't go anywhere, don't don't
- 6:28Speaker 3: don't get TV, don't go to a movie, don't go
- 6:31Speaker 3: to a theme park. Make sure you get all bent
- 6:33Speaker 3: out of shape over all the ideological stuff. I'm okay
- 6:37Speaker 3: with that, and I really and in a way, Mark,
- 6:40Speaker 3: I respect that. Look, I kind of respect the Amish.
- 6:44Speaker 3: I do. I do.
- 6:46Speaker 1: They're framed it in some really they're really condescending ways.
- 6:50Speaker 3: Well, no, they're lovely people. They're lovely people. They're not
- 6:54Speaker 3: on social media both sides. Yeah, yeah, there's good people.
- 6:59Speaker 2: I mean there.
- 7:00Speaker 3: They're not fighting on social media. They're not. They're not
- 7:03Speaker 3: hyperventilating over a black Hellen of Troy or Matt Damon
- 7:07Speaker 3: didn't speak the right dialect. They're just living their lives
- 7:10Speaker 3: and farming and making furniture and and enjoying life. You know,
- 7:14Speaker 3: God bless them.
- 7:16Speaker 2: You want to.
- 7:16Speaker 3: Live that way, live that way, God bless you, And
- 7:20Speaker 3: I promise you. I don't mean to be condescending, but
- 7:22Speaker 3: leave us alone, those of us who want to go
- 7:24Speaker 3: to a movie once in a while, the heck alone.
- 7:26Speaker 3: Because that has.
- 7:27Speaker 1: Been that has been the line that some people have drawn.
- 7:29Speaker 1: You're you're being very live and let live, which is
- 7:31Speaker 1: the way to be. There are people who have said,
- 7:33Speaker 1: not only am I going to tell you the the
- 7:36Speaker 1: the the triggers that I have about this film. But
- 7:39Speaker 1: I'm gonna tell you there's something the matter with you, right.
- 7:41Speaker 3: Oh yeah, I mentioned Disney World one time. You should
- 7:46Speaker 3: see the hate I get, Mike. No, they're so woke.
- 7:50Speaker 3: What'd you do? Go see snow White with the beard? Why?
- 7:53Speaker 3: What are you doing? I mean, I mean, look, I've
- 7:56Speaker 3: got to I love that place, my wife and kids
- 7:59Speaker 3: and say, we're a little boys. We went there. That
- 8:01Speaker 3: was our place. And now I go by myself and
- 8:04Speaker 3: I think about my wife and my kids and our memories.
- 8:08Speaker 3: News I hate. I'm going to probably get arrested. I
- 8:11Speaker 3: scattered some of her ashes on Main Street, USA at
- 8:14Speaker 3: Disney World. She loved that place. Our pastor John McKellar,
- 8:18Speaker 3: at her eulogy, stood up there and put a picture
- 8:21Speaker 3: of the Disney Cinderella Castle and reminded the congregates that
- 8:25Speaker 3: Denise Gallagher, when she was dying and we were all
- 8:29Speaker 3: there together, looked up at that castle and said, I'll
- 8:31Speaker 3: bet that's what heaven looks like. Now, John did that,
- 8:36Speaker 3: and so you want to take that away from me,
- 8:38Speaker 3: because I want to go once in a while and
- 8:39Speaker 3: gaze at Cinderella Castle and think of my Denise. You
- 8:42Speaker 3: knock yourself out I know they're woke. I get it,
- 8:45Speaker 3: I get it, but please leave people alone who just
- 8:48Speaker 3: want to kind of live their lives. All right, I'm sorry,
- 8:51Speaker 3: I'm off my soapbox.
- 8:52Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 8:53Speaker 1: There's a sixty second addendum on the culture, and that
- 8:57Speaker 1: is you may remember that of some weeks ago, I
- 8:59Speaker 1: said it would take time for me to finish it.
- 9:01Speaker 1: I said, I think I'm in the middle. Lisa and
- 9:05Speaker 1: I are in the middle. I think we're in the
- 9:06Speaker 1: middle of one of my favorite TV shows of all time. Oh,
- 9:11Speaker 1: come on a week time we I mean one of
- 9:14Speaker 1: it is probably a top ten lifetime and I'm not kidding.
- 9:18Speaker 1: On today's podcast, I will reveal it. I'll come back money.
- 9:21Speaker 1: Oh come on, you can tell me now. Nope, nope, nope,
- 9:23Speaker 1: all right, podcast, Well guess what.
- 9:25Speaker 2: And it is? It is.
- 9:27Speaker 1: There's history, there's some sci fi, there's some romance that
- 9:31Speaker 1: but Lisa found it now. It's sure, honey, I'll watch
- 9:33Speaker 1: your cute little Hallmark show with you. It ain't no Hallmark.
- 9:37Speaker 1: They are curious about a number of things. Okay, I
- 9:40Speaker 1: loved it in ways I will describe in the podcast
- 9:42Speaker 1: and I'll come back on money.
- 9:43Speaker 2: Tell everybody, all right, check it out.
- 9:45Speaker 1: Well, yo, go to the podcast apples, Spotify YouTube.
- 9:49Speaker 2: There we go.
- 9:50Speaker 3: Okay, sixty no, give me, let me ten more seconds
- 9:53Speaker 3: edition to Odyssey. Real quick? Did you see the story
- 9:56Speaker 3: about the Odyssey popcorn buckets? Were there? Were there co
- 10:00Speaker 3: memorative popcorn buckets when you went? No?
- 10:03Speaker 1: But because here's the thing you're talking about Imax, I
- 10:05Speaker 1: know I wanted to I should do Imax.
- 10:07Speaker 2: There's oh my gosh, she had a pretty normal suburban theater. No, no,
- 10:13Speaker 2: and I was blown away. So I can only imagine
- 10:15Speaker 2: what the Imax.
- 10:17Speaker 3: Well, it's like. But every theater. The popcorn bucket is
- 10:20Speaker 3: a bucket that goes for seventy bucks as much as
- 10:23Speaker 3: seventy bucks. It's it's the it's the trojan horse, and
- 10:29Speaker 3: they shove popcorn up it's belly, and people are buying it,
- 10:34Speaker 3: and people are buying it to the tune of they're
- 10:37Speaker 3: now expecting that it's going to make the movie studios
- 10:41Speaker 3: one hundred million dollars alone.
- 10:43Speaker 2: That's true.
- 10:44Speaker 3: They think seventy dollars. They think it's going to generate
- 10:47Speaker 3: one hundred million dollars in revenue, according to AMC Theaters.
- 10:50Speaker 3: AMC Theaters is what's selling and that's where I went,
- 10:53Speaker 3: and it was, yeah, we.
- 10:55Speaker 1: All, we all know what. We all know what the
- 10:57Speaker 1: Trojan horse is, right. It's a bunch of soldiers crammed
- 10:59Speaker 1: into a a fake horse horse for the purpose of
- 11:02Speaker 1: getting through the gates. Blah blah blade and yeah, I
- 11:04Speaker 1: know what that is, right. The way that is portrayed,
- 11:07Speaker 1: what it took to do that, what it took to
- 11:09Speaker 1: do it in ancient times, and what it took to
- 11:12Speaker 1: I've heard Matt by the way, Matt Damon acting job
- 11:16Speaker 1: of a for the ages, and I didn't think I'd
- 11:19Speaker 1: had that sentence in me.
- 11:20Speaker 3: How about how about that? How about that? That insufferable
- 11:23Speaker 3: John logan'sam.
- 11:25Speaker 1: He'sash, he makes my teeth itch, he's made woke me.
- 11:30Speaker 2: Too to the movie and it's unbelievable.
- 11:32Speaker 1: But the way they film that, I've heard Matt Damon
- 11:34Speaker 1: talk about this is the way Christopher Nolan wanted to
- 11:36Speaker 1: do it. It's a bunch of people very uncomfortably and
- 11:39Speaker 1: awkwardly stuffed into a horse. So to film it, he
- 11:42Speaker 1: took a bunch of actors and stuffed us awkwardly into
- 11:44Speaker 1: a horse.
- 11:45Speaker 3: It was well, Look, in my life, I always think
- 11:48Speaker 3: about where i'd be in if I lived in that era,
- 11:50Speaker 3: in that mythical era, I'd be I'd be one of
- 11:53Speaker 3: the rowers on the boat, and I can you mae,
- 11:55Speaker 3: that'd be my lot in life. I'd have to row
- 11:58Speaker 3: what an awful, awful thankless that would be row row row,
- 12:03Speaker 3: and by and quick. I don't want to be a
- 12:05Speaker 3: spoiler alert, but how many times could they get get
- 12:08Speaker 3: on that boat and escape all the danger they were on?
- 12:11Speaker 3: That boat? Would take an hour to get off of shore.
- 12:13Speaker 3: And but that's just okay, well, and just one final word,
- 12:16Speaker 3: and just one final word for everybody to remember if
- 12:18Speaker 3: they if they go do Odyssey this weekend, if they
- 12:21Speaker 3: go do Odyssey, you're gonna come away thinking one thing,
- 12:23Speaker 3: talking about one thing, because you also know what this is.
- 12:25Speaker 1: I'm going to say something. You know what this is
- 12:27Speaker 1: in mythology, not till you've seen it in this film,
- 12:29Speaker 1: and that is cyclops.
- 12:32Speaker 3: Oh boy, gosh, that's it. That's the stuff. That's the
- 12:35Speaker 3: stuff of the nightmares.
- 12:36Speaker 2: That's the stuff is ten minutes I've seen in any
- 12:39Speaker 2: long tip.
- 12:39Speaker 3: Go knock yourself out or don't be prepared. All right?
- 12:42Speaker 3: I love you see on the podcast, have a great weekend,
