- 0:14What's going on? Everybody out there, I
- 0:16appreciate tuning in as always, my guy Ash, once a month we try
- 0:22to get together and have a conversation and talk about the
- 0:27industry, talk about the hobby, talk about both of it.
- 0:31And we got to see each other, Bud.
- 0:33We saw each other about a week and a half ago.
- 0:35That was great. It's it's always fun to see Greg
- 0:39and and, well, you and then everybody else that comes along
- 0:42with you, right? And it's, it's just a good time.
- 0:46So, so yeah, it's, it's a lot of fun, man.
- 0:49And, and, and you know, I, I don't ever take it for granted,
- 0:53man. It's cool to cool to see you.
- 0:55And then, and then it's funny, right?
- 0:57Cuz, cuz you know, when you're at the table, you get to see
- 1:00organically what happens. And then you ran into my buddy
- 1:03Scott who had all that fire and, and you ended up taking a video
- 1:07of his cards. And then somebody reached out to
- 1:09me about his cards cuz they saw him in your video.
- 1:13Did you did you get a deal out of it?
- 1:16I don't think it worked out, but it was still, it was still good,
- 1:20right? It was still it was still good
- 1:22and still a good time and a lot of fun.
- 1:24If you're, if you're listening at home and you haven't seen my
- 1:28day one of the West Coast Card Show episode, I think it was day
- 1:32one. I can't remember which one it
- 1:33was, but you had done a huge deal for a bunch of super high
- 1:39grade cards like a Stan Mutual Bowman rookie and ASGC 9 and a
- 1:45Seaver rookie and an SGC 9. It was some massive stuff.
- 1:49And there was a trade involved for a couple massive show hey
- 1:54cards. And so yeah, that was that was
- 1:58super cool. And, and just seeing the deals
- 2:00that are going on and it's always fun, but it's, it's just
- 2:02fun to see each other in person, get a hug in there and all that
- 2:05good stuff too. Tell me, just as a quick recap,
- 2:10when, when you were at that particular show, 'cause I know
- 2:13you're at something, you know, 2-3 weekends a month, what were
- 2:17some takeaways? Was there a take away from that
- 2:20show? Was there any sort of buzz or
- 2:21anything that you noticed at that show that stood out a
- 2:25little bit? And I just lost you.
- 2:30He just closed. I just, as I asked the question,
- 2:34my guy accidentally closes out. So I will, he'll be back in a
- 2:39second and we will, we will reboot that.
- 2:43But I, if you're listening and, and you are, if you're, if
- 2:47you're still there, I, I felt like there was something that
- 2:51happened. There was something in the room
- 2:53that was abuzz and I talked a little bit about it and he's
- 2:56back there was there was what I was saying was, was there
- 3:00anything at the particular show at the Burbank show, at the West
- 3:04Coast Card Show in Ontario that kind of stood out to you that
- 3:09was different compared to years past or other shows?
- 3:13Like what? Did you have any takeaways from
- 3:16that particular show? It's, it's almost like it's
- 3:26just, it's just so much fun, right, to, to be out there.
- 3:30And the whole show was just busy, busy non-stop, whether it
- 3:36was at the table, whether it was buying and selling with other
- 3:40dealers, you know, some cool stuff walked up and, you know,
- 3:49it's, it didn't like, we didn't get out of the show.
- 3:52Show shut down at 4:00. We didn't get out of there till
- 3:556:00. And you know, so it was just a
- 3:59lot of fun there. You know, that, that, that, that
- 4:02show in particular, you know, they do, they do I, I think
- 4:06Southern California just craves that show and craves a big
- 4:10sports card show. And for whatever reason,
- 4:15everybody likes to attend the Burbank or the West Coast Card
- 4:19show. And if they just do a great job
- 4:22of getting people in the door and get, you know, I honestly,
- 4:26they're, they're, they, they have great security there.
- 4:30And there's security people walking all around and kicking
- 4:33people out when it's time to go. And which can be a little, maybe
- 4:37a little frustrating sometimes, but if you take a step back and
- 4:41look at why they're doing it, then it makes a lot of sense.
- 4:44And you know, it's just a, it's just a great show.
- 4:48It's funny you say that because we were doing a live stream a
- 4:51couple nights ago and the COO of the West Coast Card show was in
- 4:58the chat and he was watching it because we were kind of talking
- 5:00about the show. And so he commented in there and
- 5:03he said, what could we do to improve it?
- 5:07What are what are the areas that you think can improve?
- 5:09And I started kind of going through it and like you said,
- 5:12the facility was fantastic. It's right next to hotels, it's
- 5:15right next to an airport. The aisles are wide, it's clean,
- 5:19the security was great. There's metal detectors, there's
- 5:23people walking around there's and, and I was like, honestly,
- 5:28like it, it was, it was really well done.
- 5:31Like I, I don't have a ton of constructive criticism.
- 5:35I like that they had the corporate booths around the
- 5:38outside and they weren't plugging up in the middle of the
- 5:41show, Navigate around them makes it easier to see where you're at
- 5:45and, and kind of have a flow pattern.
- 5:48And I said the only thing you could do is, is try to maybe
- 5:53find a way to get more of the Midwest and East Coast dealers
- 5:58out 'cause there are a few that make it out, but, but not many
- 6:03east of like the Midwest, like none of the East Coast guys are
- 6:06really there. But it was, it was fantastic.
- 6:11But you touched on something I, I want to ask you about.
- 6:13So you said you had a great time doing deals with customers, but
- 6:18also other dealers. And I know that part of, you
- 6:21know, what all the dealers are doing is they're kind of
- 6:23checking out the inventory of of the other guys and seeing what
- 6:28they have. And maybe there's something
- 6:29that's kind of missing from their inventory that they want
- 6:32to add. And they do deals with each
- 6:34other. When you are walking around a
- 6:36show like that, when you are looking in cases, what are the
- 6:41things that jump out at you? Is it is it a particular player?
- 6:45Is it something that's rare? Is it something it's are they
- 6:48the cards with high? I appeal like when you're
- 6:51looking in cases and you're shopping like we're shopping,
- 6:55what are the things that get your attention?
- 7:00He's laughing. You know, I, I, I, it's almost
- 7:08the opposite. What doesn't get my attention,
- 7:11right? I look for tables that don't
- 7:12have shiny stuff and then is the person willing to sell to me,
- 7:19right? That's my criteria, Greg.
- 7:23And, and I've since we've been doing the eBay lives, I've
- 7:28become more broad with my purchases as well.
- 7:31So not only will I buy a $5000 card from you, but I buy a $50
- 7:35card or I'll buy a card that's bigger than 5000, right?
- 7:40And, and so I've become very broad in what I do.
- 7:43And yeah, I call it, so I call it supporting the dealers,
- 7:46right? I go to the show and I support
- 7:48the dealers and I just find it that with being able to to put
- 7:54cards on multiple platforms, whether it be eBay live, whether
- 7:58it be our website, whether it be eBay, whether it be Facebook,
- 8:02whether it be IG. And you know, we do a little bit
- 8:06of Twitter and, and you know, YouTube, you know, it just, it
- 8:12just lets us have a wide variety of stuff.
- 8:15And, and so if we have a wide variety of stuff, it also
- 8:18enables us to to sell a wide variety of stuff.
- 8:22And then we have to buy a wide variety of stuff.
- 8:24And man, the inner workings of this thing is, is a monster.
- 8:29Yeah, I couldn't do this by myself, right.
- 8:30I'm very fortunate that I have a good team of folks that surround
- 8:35me and they enable me and push me to do what I do best and then
- 8:41they support what we do best. And you know, which is, well,
- 8:48not, not what we do best, but they, they support the inner
- 8:51workings, right? Because when a, when a car gets
- 8:53bought, then, OK, that's, that's step one, right?
- 8:56You click the button, you buy something, but then it has to be
- 8:59shipped and then you have to get your tracking and all that kind
- 9:02of stuff. And so to be able to do that in
- 9:05a timely manner, not always the easiest thing when you have, I
- 9:10don't know, 100 packages to mail in a day.
- 9:13And then you have to pull all of those cards from different
- 9:16locations and, and places. And hey, where is this and where
- 9:20is that? It takes, it takes, takes a lot
- 9:23of work to, to be able to do that.
- 9:26And I'm just very thankful that I have people around me that,
- 9:30that can support that and, and help with that.
- 9:33So it's, it's, it's just great. When you go to a table and you
- 9:37see something that you don't see very often, it's kind of a
- 9:41little bit more low pop or it's a little bit unusual.
- 9:47Is that the kind of thing that you're more inclined to, to take
- 9:52a look at? Or is that something that you
- 9:54kind of go, well, it's a low pop and it might have a low demand?
- 9:58And so I've, I've got a way that like, is it, is it the high
- 10:03demand? Is it like Jackie Robinson cards
- 10:06that everybody wants a Jackie Robinson card?
- 10:09Like does that get your eye to sparkle?
- 10:11I mean, or is it, you say, I haven't seen one of those more
- 10:14than a couple of times. I, I got to, I got to maybe snag
- 10:17that. You know each table is different
- 10:20right? Because if I, if I walk up to a
- 10:24table, and obviously if I see a rarity, I want to try to buy it
- 10:29if it, if it makes sense. And by the same token, if I see
- 10:35a Jackie Robinson that looks really good or a Mickey Mantle
- 10:38that looks good or an errand or a maze, etcetera, etcetera, that
- 10:42looks really good, I want to try to get that too.
- 10:46And So what I try to stay away from is rats am I try not to buy
- 10:50ugly cards unless it's like an iconic ugly card.
- 10:55I'll buy a ugly mantle, rookie, maze, rookie, Aaron rookie,
- 10:58etcetera, etcetera, because you know, it's not ugly, it's well
- 11:02loved and the card, the card has a story to tell.
- 11:06And and you know, we we have there's different kind of
- 11:11collectors for different kinds of cards, right.
- 11:14And, and so some people love a well loved beat up card and some
- 11:18people love the opposite high grade, beautiful centered eye
- 11:24appeal, sharp corner card. And then then you, you have the
- 11:28middle ground there of people that want to buy, you know, twos
- 11:32and threes and fours and fives that look like they're two
- 11:37grades better. And so again, we just a wide
- 11:43variety of, of what we purchase and it's just a lot of fun, man.
- 11:48I, I, I don't really know how to, you know, so if I go, go to
- 11:54a table, my mind is open when I go to a table and I just get,
- 11:58you know, I, I see what's there. And, you know, I mean, some
- 12:01people tell me, hey, my prices are firm.
- 12:04OK, so be it. Your prices are firm.
- 12:06And, you know, I may look at like 3 or 4 cards and see if
- 12:09there's something that I might be able to use.
- 12:11And but you know, if your price is a firm and you're 25% above
- 12:16comps or 20% above comps or whatever, then there's probably
- 12:20not going to be a deal to get done.
- 12:21And so be it, right? There's, there's, you know, as,
- 12:25as they say, there's more fish in the sea.
- 12:27And, you know, especially in a big show, right, what like like
- 12:31the, the West Coast card show where there's, you know,
- 12:34hundreds of hundreds of tables. And I don't know, Greg, I'm very
- 12:39fortunate because they don't have other dealers that'll say,
- 12:42hey man, did you see this over there?
- 12:44And, or they'll come up to us and, you know, they, they may
- 12:48snag something for a certain price and want to flip it for X
- 12:52amount more and they'll, they'll sell it to me.
- 12:55So it's just just, you know, there's never, it's, it's like
- 13:00it seems to be never enough time in the day.
- 13:03And you know, we, we try to get to the show as early as
- 13:07possible. Sometimes you get there too
- 13:09early, but that's OK. You know, you get there early
- 13:14and you just get to see, see everything and see it sooner.
- 13:18Sometimes it's beneficial. And then sometimes people are
- 13:21like, Oh, it's the beginning of the show and I don't want to do
- 13:23anything. And, and that's fair, right?
- 13:26You, you know what, we, you, you can't do anything but respect
- 13:30that. And and I understand that and
- 13:33you know, that's that's it. So you know, one of the things
- 13:38when your phone was tweaking out on me, one of the things I was
- 13:41kind of bringing up is did anything stand out to you at the
- 13:45show? And, and there's no doubt the
- 13:47show is a lot of fun. And a lot of the times the fun
- 13:50is largely about who else is there.
- 13:52And so I had a blast cause a lot of my good buddies were there.
- 13:56And you did, you did a lot of big deals with a lot of them.
- 13:58In fact, Tony, as we're recording this on Tuesday the
- 14:0124th, he just posted his video today on a couple of cards.
- 14:06He did a deal with you, the the Jackie and then the the Michael
- 14:10Jordan. And is it?
- 14:12It's a great video. And if you're out there
- 14:15listening, you should check that out on Southern Collector, his
- 14:18channel. But the thing that stood out to
- 14:21me at the show was I felt like there was this thing, this buzz
- 14:26in the room about Mike Baker stickers.
- 14:29And I felt like a lot of people were utilizing that service.
- 14:34They were doing a quick turn around at the show.
- 14:38I saw multiple people go through and revealing their their
- 14:43inventory that they had submitted and what did and
- 14:46didn't get stickered. You know, and Mike Baker's been
- 14:49around a long, long time and you know, he's got there a lot of
- 14:54different people have different opinions about him and whatever
- 14:57that is is, you know, that's fine.
- 14:59But when what it really I think boils down to is that the I
- 15:05appeal movement is really kind of happening and it seems like
- 15:09it's happening. I guess my question for you is
- 15:13kind of what is your take when you have a card, buy a card,
- 15:18sell a card and it's got an I appeal sticker, like what what
- 15:22does that do to the comp? Because like a second ago you
- 15:26just said, you know, well, you know, if the guy's asking 25%
- 15:30above comp, then we may not be able to do a deal.
- 15:34But but the I appeal movement seems to be, I think blurring
- 15:39the lines of what the comp is. What's your take on the
- 15:44stickers? The the I appeal movement, The
- 15:47the, you know all how, how does that affect pricing for you when
- 15:52you're buying and you're selling and, and just so what's the feel
- 15:56you're getting out there about all that?
- 15:58So there's a couple questions there, right?
- 15:59Like first I'll address you notice that when I said the guy
- 16:04that had higher, higher prices, I still looked because hey, he
- 16:10might have a rock star that justifies that justifies the
- 16:13price and you, you know, so you always I I always try to look
- 16:18and and see see what makes sense and what doesn't make sense as
- 16:25far as so the what what were can can you repeat like?
- 16:32So what is your take on the, what is your take on the
- 16:35stickers, the Bike Baker stickers and what does that do
- 16:40to the price when you're buying and selling compared to comp?
- 16:45I mean, I think it's so new that it's hard to really gauge what
- 16:52to pay for the card just just to be honest, right?
- 16:58If you have a $5000 PSA 4 Hank Aaron, but then it's a gold
- 17:03label Hank Aaron. Well, I think we still need to
- 17:09look at the card and analyze the card.
- 17:11I mean, you know, I so Mike is a friend.
- 17:14I'll preface that. But just because Mike Baker says
- 17:17it's a gold label doesn't mean that the card is like you got to
- 17:23pay out of the wazoo. You still should look at the
- 17:25card, look at look at it overall, make sure it has has
- 17:30the attributes that you that you feel as though you want to pay
- 17:34up for. Because like at the end of the
- 17:36day, you, you know, you got to pay, you got to pay up for a
- 17:39card that looks very nice. And if it has a gold label on
- 17:43it, then it should be a total rock star, right?
- 17:46No, if ands or buts about it. And so as far as what to pay for
- 17:51stuff like that, you know, it's, it's not not the easiest thing.
- 17:55I mean, you know, you'll see cards sometimes do.
- 18:00Do. 2030% more, but then you'll see cards do 100 to 150% more or
- 18:06more. And and so there's no, I don't
- 18:11know that I, I can't really answer the what to pay for it
- 18:15part, right? Part of it is probably the card
- 18:17itself and, and is it a high demand card?
- 18:22Is it a lower demand card? Is it an iconic card?
- 18:24And I mean it, it's definite. I, I guess what I'm getting at
- 18:28or, or I'm asking you is being in the industry and, and being a
- 18:33person who is buying and selling a lot every day is how blurred
- 18:39are the lines of what the comp is now that it feels like
- 18:46there's more reliance on I appeal than the number grade.
- 18:53Yeah. Is it becoming pretty loose?
- 18:57I mean, comps are comps are what they are.
- 19:00I think you have to just take into account the card that
- 19:05you're buying and you know, if you, if you, if you look at
- 19:10auctions, sometimes you'll see stuff just go crazy, right.
- 19:14I think, I think people more so are comfortable paying up at an
- 19:19auction than they are paying at a dealer table.
- 19:24That's, that's what I, I just think it's, you know, easier
- 19:29mentally to be like, OK, well, somebody out bid me.
- 19:32Oh crap. I, I now I have to bid again to,
- 19:36to get what I wanted. And we're at a dealer table.
- 19:39It's, it's kind of like a one-on-one thing.
- 19:42And you know, there's nobody bidding for the card, but except
- 19:46for you and you know, you, you have you and the dealer.
- 19:49So I think the collector is at an advantage at that point.
- 19:54You know, and just in All, in all honesty, I think that's I
- 19:58think it's advantage collector if you can get a really good I
- 20:01appeal card from a dealer booth and not from an auction
- 20:05depending on the price obviously.
- 20:07So it's, it's it Greg, it's, it's, it's not easy, right, Both
- 20:12ways. It's not easy to buy something.
- 20:15I mean, you know, it's just crazy sometimes how these how,
- 20:20how auctions go. I mean, you know, if you look at
- 20:23the 52 Jackie Robinson that Tony got, yeah, you know, a week, a
- 20:27month, two months ago or whatever, then there there's one
- 20:30on Golden, which I think Tony's copy is a superior copy.
- 20:34And, and the one on Golden went for like 50% more.
- 20:38Yeah, you know, and yeah, you know, it, it's so it's just who
- 20:43knows what's going to do what when we don't know.
- 20:46And nobody would have guessed that a 52 mantle that was
- 20:50centered would do 122,000, right?
- 20:54Nobody would have said, Oh yeah, that card is going to do that,
- 20:56that amount of money. And it didn't have a sticker.
- 20:59Nobody, you know, So the sticker kind of helps you think, I
- 21:04think. And it and it just gives
- 21:08somebody all it gives an expert opinion saying, Hey, this card
- 21:12looks really nice. And it's it's got the attributes
- 21:14of a high appeal, high. I appeal card for the grade.
- 21:20Is that a? Is that a service that you've
- 21:24used much or is it kind of something like you just kind of
- 21:27deal with stuff as it is? Like if it comes up to you in
- 21:32APSA case, you leave it in APSA case and you sell it in APSA
- 21:36case. Or do you, do you ever look at
- 21:38things like, well, maybe for this card it's worth submitting
- 21:42like is that something that you utilize much?
- 21:46If it looks good, I submit it. It's, it's a lot more convenient
- 21:51to submit it at a show than it is to, for me personally,
- 21:56because I don't like to like, then you start to mail cards all
- 21:59over the country and stuff like that.
- 22:01And I, I, I try to just do as less of that as possible if I
- 22:05can, especially when great getting cards, evaluating stuff
- 22:09because we have cards in the marketplace and and so forth,
- 22:12right. And, but Mike's not hard to find
- 22:14either. You know, you know, he's at
- 22:17basically every big show. He'll be at the he'll be at the
- 22:20Philly show, which will be at the Philly show, which is,
- 22:22that's our next show at the beginning of March.
- 22:26And then after that, he'll, I think he'll be probably be at
- 22:28the Dallas show as well. And, and that's the week after
- 22:33the Philly show. So, you know, he's not
- 22:37undefined. He works really hard.
- 22:39And I, I like how he does it. He doesn't, he doesn't deal with
- 22:43the public very much. He stays in his own isolated
- 22:46area. And he, yeah, he.
- 22:47Really does. Yeah, well, he, you know, and
- 22:50he's, he's, remember this is a mental thing, right?
- 22:54You're, he's mentally looking at a card.
- 22:56He's looking at it through a loop.
- 22:57He's looking at it, you know, and, and saying, hey, he
- 23:01because, you know, to his, he's told me before it benefits me to
- 23:05put a sticker on a card, right? That's how he gets paid.
- 23:10But at the same time, you know, he, he doesn't want to, he
- 23:14doesn't want to compromise the integrity of the sticker too.
- 23:17So he's very picky in in that. I remember one time he gave me a
- 23:21gold label and took it away. I'm like, man.
- 23:25Well, that was one of the things I thought was interesting
- 23:27because in one of my episodes, our buddy David Chase, a great
- 23:31guy, you know, he, he had submitted 20 cards to Baker for
- 23:35stickering and he only got 8 of the 20 got stickers.
- 23:40And, and I mean, he's David's got a very good eye and he's
- 23:43got, he loves high eye, very picky and eight of the 20.
- 23:49And you know, some people would say, oh man, he's being, he's
- 23:52being stingy with the stickers, but it Baker gets paid way more
- 23:57money if he stickers all of them.
- 23:59So like what you just said, his I think people have to keep that
- 24:04in mind is when when the card doesn't get a sticker, Baker
- 24:08makes less. So he you would think he would
- 24:11be inclined to over sticker, but it does feel like he's very,
- 24:16very strict, which is counterintuitive from a business
- 24:20model point of view. So when people see man, that
- 24:23card didn't get stickered that I think they have to remind
- 24:27themselves that's that's, you know, it's disadvantageous for
- 24:31him not to sticker it. OK, so there was another thing
- 24:35that happened recently. In fact, as we're recording this
- 24:38on the 24th, there was a video that posted last night from
- 24:44Teapot. And Teapot is, you know, one of
- 24:47Jeff Wilson's main guys and he's a recognizable guy.
- 24:50And, and I like Teapot a lot. I think he's a good dude.
- 24:54And he posted a video where he a few months ago, he took the same
- 25:02card and he sent it to 1 grading company, got it back, cracked
- 25:08it. Another one got it back, cracked
- 25:09it, got it back. He did it to all of them.
- 25:11Well, he took the same card and he sent it back to all the
- 25:16grading companies over the last few months and he has the
- 25:21results. And so I'm going to go to his
- 25:23summary. So if you're listening, listen
- 25:26to Teapot describing this is an 89 Upper deck Ken Griffey Junior
- 25:30card that originally started in a BGS 9.5 and what it went
- 25:38through. It's about a minute clip that
- 25:40Teapot's going to narrate through for us.
- 25:43So this this card started out on its journey last year, like a
- 25:48year ago and graded well before that.
- 25:52You can see the great the the you maybe you can't see, but the
- 25:55serial number was 00073, whereas now there's 001.
- 25:59So we've moved a hole a hole to the 10th power in in from there.
- 26:06So this was Abgs 95 and then this went to SGC and was came
- 26:12back authentic evidence of trimming.
- 26:15The second time that I sent it to SGC more recently it got a
- 26:18nine. I had sent it to PSA where it
- 26:21got a six the first time and then it got an 8.
- 26:24We went to tag and they said do not hold her oversized arena
- 26:28club 8.5 CGC 9. So we're we're running the whole
- 26:32gamut from six up into the eights, nines 8 and a half, 9.5
- 26:36true gem. And now we have officially
- 26:46broken the Internet. My work is done.
- 26:49So. So this card Ash Becky gave it
- 26:54gave it a 9.5. Now they're saying it's trimmed.
- 26:58PSA gave it a six at one point. They gave it a nine at one
- 27:02point, Tag wouldn't grade it 'cause they said it was too big
- 27:07to fit in their holder 'cause it was an oversized card.
- 27:11But then now Beckett's saying it's trimmed.
- 27:15SGC once said it was trimmed, once said it was a nine.
- 27:19So when we see stuff like that, you know, we're collectors and I
- 27:23know that you love the hobby and we say this is fun and all this
- 27:26stuff and it is fun. But when you see something like
- 27:29that and, and the problem is if the card gets APSA 6 versus APSA
- 27:359, depending on the card, it's just a monumental shift in value
- 27:41when you see that. Now first of all, had you seen
- 27:44that clip yet and #2 what is your take away on that whole
- 27:48thing? So I I think he posted that clip
- 27:51a couple months ago, right? So, so he he did a couple months
- 27:55ago do it where he sent it for the first round and then he
- 28:00recently resent it to all of the same companies again to see if
- 28:05there was a consistency within the same company of the same
- 28:08card. And that's a result of the
- 28:09second round including all 2 rounds of it.
- 28:14Yeah, I mean, it's it's frustrating, I think is the best
- 28:20way to put that. Even the AI company got it
- 28:24wrong. So we think right, the AI so so
- 28:30for for the for everybody, it's like, oh, AI this and that.
- 28:33You you know, AI even got it wrong.
- 28:36And you know, the crazy part is it went from, let's call it a
- 28:40$1300 card, which I think a 95 is probably maybe a little more
- 28:44than that because the Griffey card is probably like doubled,
- 28:46but maybe. So maybe it's like 151617
- 28:50hundred 1500 to APSA 9 to 400 to APSA 6, which is 80 bucks to an
- 28:57STC altered, which is 60 bucks to an STC 9, which is 300 bucks.
- 29:03Like it's just, you know, you know, honestly, it is, it's,
- 29:08it's frustrating and, but also so you can look at it from the
- 29:13negative point of, oh, it's frustrating and you know, this
- 29:16sucks and you know, but we need grading, right?
- 29:18So we don't get ripped off. How funny is that, right?
- 29:24We need grading so we don't get ripped off, but but instead
- 29:27we're getting ripped off a different way.
- 29:29It's just nuts and you know, because we need grading so we
- 29:34could tell whether a car has been altered or yet, you know,
- 29:37trimmed or whatever. But but if the graders can't get
- 29:40it right, then then, you know, the experts can't get it right.
- 29:44Then then who's supposed to get it right?
- 29:46I mean it, it's honestly, it's just, it's just frustrating.
- 29:49But from the other side of the coin, you know, there's some
- 29:52guys that I know that Greg, they they bring their loops out, they
- 29:57buy, I appeal, they they look and they'll overpay for cards.
- 30:01Well, why? Because they state they say,
- 30:04Hey, the grade does not is not justified, right?
- 30:08So I'm going to buy this PSA five.
- 30:11I'm going to buy this PSA 6 card and I'm going to crack it and
- 30:16I'm going to resubmit it and get a seven and eight A9.
- 30:22I mean, gosh, I've man, it's, it's crazy.
- 30:26So IA guy I, I, I bought a Yogi Berra 52 tops and APSA eight.
- 30:33OK, the guy I bought it from, he, he cracked it out of a
- 30:39Becket holder, a lower grade Becket holder and sent it to
- 30:45PSA. Got a, got an 8 on the card home
- 30:49run, right? That's a, it's a huge come up
- 30:52and, and then I bought the card and, and so, you know, it's
- 30:57just, and there's stories like that all over the hobby, man,
- 31:01just all over. So I mean, I think if you have a
- 31:03good eye, some people have better eyes, some people are
- 31:06more patient because it takes patience.
- 31:08It takes, sometimes you fall on your face and you thought it's
- 31:12not always, you know, a winning story.
- 31:15It's it's sometimes it's a losing story of, Hey, I cracked
- 31:18a card and I got an authentic altered and, or it might take
- 31:216-7 months to go through the iterations of sending it back
- 31:25and stuff like that. But, but you know, it's just
- 31:28honestly, it's frustrating man, to like, imagine, just imagine
- 31:33being the normal person, right? Hey, I'm just a normal guy.
- 31:36I, I just bought a card yesterday, this weekend from
- 31:39golden, like it was a three MK from golden and the card is
- 31:47beautiful, a Jackie Robinson three MK.
- 31:51I'm not going to sell that as a three MK, I'm going to crack it
- 31:54and send it to SG. It'd be interesting if I sent it
- 31:57to PSAI, don't know where. So that's my story.
- 32:03Yeah, it's, it's, I think everything you just said is how
- 32:08all of us feel. I think it's frustrating.
- 32:11It's we are using the experts to not get ripped off, but then you
- 32:16see a car jumping around 3 grades and you don't know what
- 32:19to think. And, and to me, when I see this,
- 32:23this is, this is my take away. My take away is it's proof that
- 32:29the number should really not be dictating what you're willing to
- 32:35buy a card for. Because if this card could have
- 32:39been a nine yesterday and now it's a six or vice versa or an
- 32:43altered and now a 9 or an and 9.5.
- 32:46If you like the looks of the card, if you are looking at a
- 32:49card and you like the looks of it and you go, I don't know how
- 32:52this thing is a four. Well, maybe it's not a four.
- 32:56Like we use, we use grades as facts.
- 33:00We, we treat them as it's a this is an 8.
- 33:03This is an 8 Jackie Robinson card.
- 33:06No, the opinion is it's an 8. Like I might see a girl walking
- 33:11down the mall and I go, she's hot and I might look at you or
- 33:15you might look at her and go, what are you talking about?
- 33:18It's an opinion that one person has or maybe two people has.
- 33:22And I think what you just said is so important.
- 33:26I think it's patience and it's having a good eye and being
- 33:31able, being able to sit and wait and wait until the right card
- 33:38comes up. And when the right card comes up
- 33:41then it's fine because you've been patient the whole time.
- 33:45So patience, having a good eye, trusting your eye, you go, man,
- 33:50that thing doesn't look like a four.
- 33:51That thing looks like an 8, but they're asking 5 prices.
- 33:56I could see stepping up to five prices just because the four
- 34:00says it's a four. So I think that that's really
- 34:03good advice. And I think the more we see
- 34:07stuff like this, I think that the the Gray area between one
- 34:13grade and the next is going to blur more and more.
- 34:16And that leaf, Jackie Robinson that our buddy David Chase was
- 34:20going after, the one that had the staple marks the staple
- 34:23holes in it and it sold for like 4 prices but it.
- 34:28Sold for more than it sold for 27,000.
- 34:31And it was a one, right, because it had the staple holes, but it
- 34:35looks like it looked like an 8. I think we're going to see more
- 34:41and more and more of that moving forward.
- 34:44Yeah, well, the hobby appreciates a good looking piece
- 34:48of art. Yeah.
- 34:51That's just that's way to put it right.
- 34:54The hobby appreciates a good. I mean, the corners on that card
- 34:56was sharp. The registration was good, The
- 34:59color was amazing, all the IT had all the attributes of a high
- 35:04end card. So I mean, if you think about
- 35:06it, oh, I paid 27,000 for a one. Yes, you did a one that looks
- 35:11like A6 or A7. And, you know, you talked to
- 35:15David about that card and he'll tell you he's put hours of
- 35:18research into that specific base, that specific card.
- 35:23And, and, and so he, he looked at probably hundreds of Jackie
- 35:27pictures and he was like, man, this card is just the card.
- 35:32And it, that card in in, in specifically is very, very hard
- 35:37to get centered to top it off with good registration to top it
- 35:42off with that beautiful yellow background, then to have the
- 35:46blue hat, then to have you, you know, great color and sharp
- 35:51corners, white borders. Like what is that?
- 35:54Like this card was stapled to a book for how many years?
- 35:57And, you know, like the the stories that that card could
- 36:01tell. Oh yeah.
- 36:03You know, or the OR maybe not right, because it was colored so
- 36:07well that it probably somebody put it in the book and forgot
- 36:11about it for a long, long time. And you know, who knows man, who
- 36:16who knows? Like I said, who knows the
- 36:18stories that a baseball card could tell and I I think again
- 36:23to my point, that's why people love to buy beat up looking
- 36:27cards too, because they they have great stories to tell.
- 36:30A. 100% And there is a market for all of it.
- 36:34And the cards that have been well loved are a different sort
- 36:39of artifact. You know, it it's it's, it's
- 36:42like an archaeologist who pulls T Rex tooth out.
- 36:46The one that's perfectly intact, that's beautiful for one reason,
- 36:51but the one that's broken off because it's sticking out of a
- 36:54pterodactyl's head, that's cool for a different reason.
- 36:58And there's something, there's something to be said for each of
- 37:01those. And I love that we all collect
- 37:03differently. Some people want the pristine
- 37:05copy and some people want the one that has that could tell a
- 37:10really cool story. And, and that's part of what
- 37:12makes this hobby unique and it's part of what makes it it fun, is
- 37:17that we're not all chasing the exact same thing.
- 37:19We're chasing different things. Well, buddy, we're 37 minutes in
- 37:25again. If you're out there listening
- 37:26and you've not met Ash or you've not been to his website, it's
- 37:30Legacy Cards with az.net. He's very active on Facebook and
- 37:36Instagram and eBay live and he's at all the big shows.
- 37:42And if you go to the all the big shows and, and you find the case
- 37:45with all the best stuff, you're probably at Ash's booth.
- 37:48So that's how you'll know if you're there.
- 37:52Any parting thoughts before we wrap up our February edition of
- 37:56this? Let's see, No, I mean, I, I
- 38:02think the hobby is alive, man. And people are loving, are just
- 38:07loving, loving to collect and trade and transact cards.
- 38:13And it's just a lot of a lot of fun and people are having a good
- 38:17time doing it. I love that when people bring
- 38:20their kids into it. And you know, I think I don't
- 38:24know if we talked about it here or not.
- 38:26Yeah, I think we did, right. We talked about Strongsville
- 38:29opening it up to like modern and Pokémon and and stuff like that,
- 38:32which, OK, you know, nobody really cares about.
- 38:35We don't care about modern and Pokémon and stuff.
- 38:38But like, at the end of the day, other people do and you know,
- 38:44it's and it's OK. It's what make, you know, when
- 38:47when we were kids, maybe a lot of a lot of people didn't care
- 38:50about 84 tops and 85 tops or and obviously people didn't care
- 38:55about 86 player basketball. And look, look at how that
- 38:59turned out. So, yeah, you know, I think,
- 39:02man, if you just go with the theory if or the, the fun of
- 39:05collecting what you like and buying what you like and yeah,
- 39:09you know, just just have a good time.
- 39:11It's it's, it's a good thing. And yeah, we, we, you know.
- 39:17Oh, go ahead. It's funny you said, you know,
- 39:19they weren't paying attention to 86 slur basketball because I
- 39:23went to a lot of card shows as a kid growing up.
- 39:26And I remember being at a card show in the ballroom of a
- 39:31Holiday Inn, just a regular old hotel and a dealer who had
- 39:36stacks and stacks and stacks of unopened team bags of star
- 39:41basketball. And the guy was crickets around
- 39:45him. Nobody wanted it.
- 39:48And now that's the booth that now looking back, has the stuff
- 39:53that's worth the most. So you never know how things
- 39:57will turn out and you know there's always a different
- 40:01strategy or a different angle and and that adds an element of
- 40:04interest too. Yeah, it's good, man.
- 40:08We, we appreciate all the people that come out and support us.
- 40:10And you know that my, my son Dalen and JB and Frankie were in
- 40:16Nashville this last weekend. And, and so that, that was a
- 40:20good show and lots of people coming out there to support us
- 40:23there. And, you know, it's just a lot
- 40:25of fun when people come and come, come and support you and,
- 40:29and appreciate, just appreciate, just appreciate the hobby,
- 40:33right? Like at the end of the day, and
- 40:35you know, sometimes we get a deal done, sometimes we don't.
- 40:37And you know, we try our best to take care of everybody and make
- 40:41sure it's fair for everybody. And, you know, it's, it's just a
- 40:45good time And the, the shows are shows are good.
- 40:48And we're, we're really happy to do it.
- 40:51I, I like doing the eBay lives. eBay lives are pretty cool.
- 40:54Get to get to, you know, talk to people.
- 40:57Like at the end of the day, that's what we're doing, right?
- 40:59We're talking a people mostly typing, but we get to talk to
- 41:02people and, and that's pretty cool.
- 41:04And, and that's a lot of fun as well.
- 41:06So, so it's great, man. We have a good time doing it.
- 41:09And we just thank everybody for supporting us.
- 41:11And yeah. Well said.
- 41:14And if you're out there listening and you, you have a
- 41:16question you want to ask Ash or you want to bring brought up as
- 41:20a topic, feel free to message me midlifecards@gmail.com.
- 41:25I'd be happy to pass on some of those topics and we can pick
- 41:30Ash's brain a little bit. But this is this is always fun.
- 41:33But this was a fun 4041 minutes and 30 seconds.
- 41:38So I look forward to seeing you in less than two months again,
- 41:43but this time in Ohio instead of California, so.
- 41:45It's going to be pretty crazy there, I can already tell.
- 41:48It's going to be it's going to be nuts, so.
- 41:50It'll be fun, but all right, man, Good.
- 41:53OK, guys. Well, hey, take care, Greg.
- 41:55Have a good rest of your day. All right, bye, bye.
