Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: If your life already included a successful career, a long marriage,
- 0:05Speaker 1: a happy family, and even wearing a crown, would you
- 0:08Speaker 1: say your best years were behind you? Not from an ex-guest.
- 0:11Speaker 1: She swears that her 40s and 50s have been the
- 0:14Speaker 1: beginning of her greatest hits. Today, we're talking about breaking
- 0:17Speaker 1: the generational cycles, raising your mini-me, and how staying slightly
- 0:22Speaker 1: mysterious to your partner keeps them on their toes. Because truly,
- 0:26Speaker 1: how hard can it be? Welcome to another episode of
- 0:34Speaker 1: How Hard Can It Be? I'm your host, Diana Maria Riva,
- 0:37Speaker 1: and we are here with a queen.
- 0:40Speaker 2: You know her from, well, first of all, she's done everything.
- 0:42Speaker 1: She's an actor, producer, writer, mother, and wife, and wonderful sister-girlfriend.
- 0:50Speaker 1: And you know her from Without a Trace, Rush Hour 2,
- 0:52Speaker 1: Devious Maids. I know her because she has played not
- 0:56Speaker 1: only my sister, but my BFF in Chasing Papi. Welcome
- 1:00Speaker 1: this Puerto Rican boricua beauty, inside and out, Rosalyn Sanchez!
- 1:09Speaker 1: We were just saying that we've known each other for
- 1:11Speaker 1: a long time. And this is the thing that gets
- 1:14Speaker 1: me when I'm thinking about how long we've known each other.
- 1:16Speaker 1: And we don't have opportunities to actually sit down and chat.
- 1:19Speaker 1: When we did Miss Miami, which was a pilot that
- 1:25Speaker 1: did not get picked up ABC, where she was just
- 1:30Speaker 1: a renegade law enforcer. It was amazing. We went to Miami.
- 1:37Speaker 1: That's the first time we met. And my son was
- 1:38Speaker 1: only nine months old. It was my first time away
- 1:41Speaker 1: from him. I cried all the way until they fed
- 1:45Speaker 1: me champagne.
- 1:45Speaker 2: And he's 24 now.
- 1:46Speaker 1: 24 years ago. Yes, about to be 25. That was 24.
- 1:52Speaker 2: You know what happened with the Miss Miami? Because we
- 1:54Speaker 2: were ahead of our time.
- 1:55Speaker 3: We were.
- 1:56Speaker 2: It's like they decided to go with this Latina lead
- 1:59Speaker 2: with a thick accent. I was so happy. I felt
- 2:03Speaker 2: so blessed. I was already like planning my life in
- 2:06Speaker 2: Miami because we shot in Miami. I had everything calculated.
- 2:09Speaker 2: It doesn't get picked up. And I'm going, what do
- 2:11Speaker 2: you mean? And then now every time that I think
- 2:14Speaker 2: about Miss Miami, and I saw it recently. maybe like
- 2:18Speaker 2: five years ago, I was like, you know, I'm going
- 2:19Speaker 2: to check it out, the high dot again. And it
- 2:22Speaker 2: wasn't bad at all. No. It wasn't bad at all.
- 2:24Speaker 2: And I said to myself, you know what? We were just,
- 2:27Speaker 2: it was too soon for them to have somebody with
- 2:29Speaker 2: an accent Latina as a lead and a Latino-based show,
- 2:33Speaker 2: you know? Yeah. It is what it is.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Well, we could have been groundbreaking. Whenever they don't pick
- 2:37Speaker 1: up shows like that, that could be, that they weren't
- 2:39Speaker 1: ready for, but you just, it marvels that, marvels you
- 2:43Speaker 1: that they could have been groundbreaking.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Yes.
- 2:45Speaker 1: You know, there was a first All in the Family.
- 2:47Speaker 1: There was a first The Sopranos. All of those things
- 2:51Speaker 1: were groundbreaking and different. And it's just amazing that they
- 2:54Speaker 1: didn't roll the dice on it. But here we are,
- 2:56Speaker 1: 24 years later, you look gorgeous.
- 3:00Speaker 2: Oh, thank you, Mama. Likewise.
- 3:02Speaker 1: Thank you. Thank you. And I just wonder, in those
- 3:05Speaker 1: 24 years, a lot has changed. But I do have
- 3:09Speaker 1: this little icebreaker in Called, what was your, oh shit,
- 3:14Speaker 1: is this midlife moment? Did you have a moment? And
- 3:18Speaker 1: it could be something serious. It could be something as
- 3:21Speaker 1: simple as hair growing in places that it shouldn't be.
- 3:23Speaker 1: Or it could be like crossroad, what you're not doing anymore,
- 3:27Speaker 1: putting up with whatever. It's like one of those moments
- 3:29Speaker 1: where you're like.
- 3:30Speaker 2: Oh my God. You know, I think as a person,
- 3:34Speaker 2: that happened once I had kids. You know, I became
- 3:36Speaker 2: a mom very late in life. My first kid was
- 3:38Speaker 2: at 38. Dylan, I was 44. So I waited a
- 3:42Speaker 2: while to be a mom. And I had no idea
- 3:45Speaker 2: that I had so many issues. Wow. Family trauma.
- 3:51Speaker 1: Oh, okay.
- 3:52Speaker 2: That my entire life I refused to pay attention to
- 3:56Speaker 2: or I'm the type of person that me pongo gringolas.
- 4:00Speaker 2: I don't say anything. I just keep going. And once
- 4:04Speaker 2: I became a parent, it was like hitting a wall.
- 4:08Speaker 2: Then I was like, oh! I have a problem with
- 4:11Speaker 2: this and with that and with that and I don't
- 4:12Speaker 2: want this for my life and I don't want this
- 4:13Speaker 2: upbringing for my kids. And I started calculating and moving
- 4:15Speaker 2: numbers around and I was like, what is going on
- 4:17Speaker 2: with me? Okay, parenthood has changed me dramatically.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Do you think that was the trigger then? The trigger is,
- 4:24Speaker 1: because I feel like when I became a parent, I
- 4:25Speaker 1: suddenly felt my own mortality. I'm like, oh, I can
- 4:28Speaker 1: and will die someday.
- 4:30Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:30Speaker 1: And then I'm leaving these two behind.
- 4:32Speaker 2: And I think about it because even my daughter said
- 4:34Speaker 2: to me not too long ago, and I was like, hey,
- 4:38Speaker 2: you know, but then it's really, Messed with me. I'm
- 4:42Speaker 2: not going to tell her, but it messed with me.
- 4:44Speaker 2: She said, do you realize that when Dylan graduates from
- 4:47Speaker 2: high school, you're going to be like almost 80 something
- 4:49Speaker 2: years old? You won't be able to meet his kids. Oh, God.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Can you believe that?
- 4:55Speaker 3: No.
- 4:55Speaker 2: I was like, what are you talking about? What are
- 4:57Speaker 2: you talking about? I'm going to be fabulous. Are you joking, Isabella?
- 5:01Speaker 2: You're so crazy. You know what I mean? And then
- 5:04Speaker 2: I went to take a shower and I was shaking.
- 5:07Speaker 1: Oh, my God. Going.
- 5:08Speaker 2: Oh, no.
- 5:09Speaker 1: Oh, my God.
- 5:10Speaker 2: You're right. I'm 53. I told Eric that night, do
- 5:14Speaker 2: you know that we're going to be very old by
- 5:15Speaker 2: the time Dylan has kids?
- 5:16Speaker 1: We won't be able to.
- 5:18Speaker 2: Meet the kids. So what are you talking about? Well,
- 5:20Speaker 2: your daughter just told me. And, yeah, it hits you.
- 5:25Speaker 2: I just go, I have dear friends, like my sisters
- 5:30Speaker 2: from high school. They're grandmas. Oh, yeah. And they're enjoying
- 5:33Speaker 2: their grandkids. Yeah. And they love them, you know. And
- 5:36Speaker 2: I get the pictures and I'm going, oh, my God,
- 5:37Speaker 2: this is amazing. And I am so happy for them
- 5:39Speaker 2: and I love them. Yeah. I don't know if I'm
- 5:42Speaker 2: going to be able to live that.
- 5:43Speaker 1: So thank you, Sebi, for bringing it on a platter.
- 5:48Speaker 2: That's why, you know what's happening? That's why, I mean, it's,
- 5:51Speaker 2: you know, because we live in Hollywood and the business,
- 5:54Speaker 2: you know, and everything is full of caca. But you
- 5:58Speaker 2: know how the longevity saga, you know, and everything is
- 6:03Speaker 2: about looking younger and peptides. And what can you do
- 6:07Speaker 2: to be able to prolong your life?
- 6:08Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 6:08Speaker 2: 10 years ago, I'll be like, that's laughable. You know,
- 6:12Speaker 2: I'm so young. I don't even have to think about it.
- 6:14Speaker 2: Now it's an obsession. Yes. Because all I care about
- 6:17Speaker 2: is how healthy can I be when I'm 75 and
- 6:22Speaker 2: at 80.
- 6:23Speaker 1: That's a difference. That is a game changer.
- 6:25Speaker 2: Yes.
- 6:25Speaker 1: When you talk about, like, I remember when I first
- 6:28Speaker 1: realized about two years ago that I had a pinched
- 6:31Speaker 1: nerve in my back.
- 6:32Speaker 2: Okay.
- 6:32Speaker 1: But before it was properly diagnosed that it was a
- 6:35Speaker 1: pinched nerve, everything went through.
- 6:37Speaker 2: Is it MS? Yes.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Is it a slipped disc? Is it an ALS? Is
- 6:41Speaker 1: it whatever? Because this was going numb, inexplicably, like all
- 6:44Speaker 1: that stuff. And then, you know, they did all the
- 6:47Speaker 1: tests and a neurosurgeon said, no, it's a pinched nerve.
- 6:50Speaker 1: But then life became about preserve the back. Stretching and
- 6:53Speaker 1: preserve the back. And now I feel like I am 80.
- 6:55Speaker 1: But if I want to be 80, I have to
- 6:58Speaker 1: stretch and preserve the back. But that's a big change,
- 7:00Speaker 1: a shift in mindset when it's not just about skin anymore.
- 7:04Speaker 1: It's about just quality of life. internally, externally, so that
- 7:09Speaker 1: you're here as long as possible.
- 7:11Speaker 2: Listen, my father just passed. He was 86, I believe.
- 7:15Speaker 2: And the last year and a half, he was unrecognizable.
- 7:24Speaker 2: He had a stroke, and then he did not have
- 7:27Speaker 2: the will to live anymore. We all believe that he
- 7:31Speaker 2: had the capability with the right therapy and mindset to
- 7:35Speaker 2: get out of that bed.
- 7:37Speaker 1: Okay.
- 7:37Speaker 2: And the wheelchair. Yeah. He chose to, for whatever reason,
- 7:40Speaker 2: to just let himself go. But it kills me because
- 7:44Speaker 2: when I think about my dad growing up, my dad
- 7:46Speaker 2: was an athlete. He was vibrant. My dad was a trunk. Yeah.
- 7:50Speaker 2: Era un roble. Yeah. And then to see him go
- 7:55Speaker 2: down so fast, so sad, it also triggered something in me.
- 8:00Speaker 2: And even looking at my mom, my mom then aged 30.
- 8:03Speaker 2: 20 years taking care of him.
- 8:05Speaker 1: I bet, yes.
- 8:06Speaker 2: So now my mom can't even walk, and I just,
- 8:09Speaker 2: I go home, and it depresses me, and I am
- 8:11Speaker 2: so determined not to allow any of that to happen
- 8:15Speaker 2: to me. You know, listen, a stroke comes out of nowhere,
- 8:17Speaker 2: there's no control. Yes. But at least I know, God forbid,
- 8:21Speaker 2: something like that happens to me, I'm going to use
- 8:24Speaker 2: every ounce of my being to get up from bed.
- 8:30Speaker 1: What do you think, God, in the way of his mindset?
- 8:33Speaker 1: My dad says this all the time. He says, if
- 8:37Speaker 1: I'm a burden, that's all I think that generation can
- 8:39Speaker 1: think of, is if I'm a burden, I'm out.
- 8:42Speaker 2: I'm done.
- 8:42Speaker 1: Don't do anything more in life to keep me going.
- 8:47Speaker 2: He made sure that he went down and everybody went
- 8:49Speaker 2: down with him. Oh, okay. So it was different. It
- 8:51Speaker 2: was almost selfish to the point that everybody's telling you,
- 8:55Speaker 2: the experts are telling you, if you do this and
- 8:57Speaker 2: this and this and this and this, you have a chance.
- 9:00Speaker 2: And you chose not to do it. and become more
- 9:03Speaker 2: and more abusive. And then it's not only your problem,
- 9:05Speaker 2: it's everybody's problem. So as a family, we all took
- 9:09Speaker 2: a hit because we just couldn't understand. If you were
- 9:13Speaker 2: the man, el cheche, the life of the party, you know,
- 9:16Speaker 2: I'm invincible, you know, I'm above everybody.
- 9:18Speaker 1: What was his name?
- 9:19Speaker 2: Efraín.
- 9:20Speaker 1: Don Efraín.
- 9:21Speaker 2: Don Efraín. Don Efraín.¿ Qué pasó? Yeah.
- 9:23Speaker 1: What? Did that play into you making connections about any
- 9:31Speaker 1: of those family triggers, that history, that family history or
- 9:35Speaker 1: trauma that you said you kind of skipped over?
- 9:37Speaker 2: Oh, like crazy. Yeah. Like crazy. First of all, it
- 9:39Speaker 2: was like, it makes me emotional. It's like the disappointment
- 9:43Speaker 2: that I was like, that's, you're not who you said
- 9:47Speaker 2: you were. It was weird.
- 9:50Speaker 1: How he built himself your whole life.
- 9:53Speaker 2: Shocking. Wow. I was like, I don't recognize you. I
- 9:55Speaker 2: don't know you. I want nothing to do with that. Yeah.
- 9:59Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 10:00Speaker 2: It's been really interesting.
- 10:02Speaker 1: Very interesting. That is different. I think that I've heard
- 10:07Speaker 1: multiple different stories of women in this chapter, my girlfriends
- 10:12Speaker 1: in this season of life where we are working, we're vibrant,
- 10:16Speaker 1: we're still accomplishing things that we want to do. We're
- 10:19Speaker 1: still raising our children because even though yours is 14
- 10:23Speaker 1: and 8, mine's 21 and 24, I'm still taking care.
- 10:26Speaker 1: The 24-year-old, he is on his adult life right now.
- 10:29Speaker 1: But the 21-year-old, she's still in school.
- 10:32Speaker 2: She's with you.
- 10:32Speaker 1: And I'm supporting her while she does her path to
- 10:35Speaker 1: med school. But, you know, when you think about it
- 10:40Speaker 1: from the perspective of you're still a daughter and then
- 10:43Speaker 1: you're this parent. And so what are you going to
- 10:46Speaker 1: change and shift and do differently, you know? So that does–
- 10:50Speaker 1: I mean, clearly that's a personality trait in there, something.
- 10:53Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. I think I learned– listen, it's interesting because even–
- 10:57Speaker 2: I think my whole life is about– I don't know
- 11:00Speaker 2: if you believe in this, Diana– The importance of breaking cycles. Yes.
- 11:04Speaker 2: You know, and I think we're here for, we're put
- 11:06Speaker 2: in earth for,¿ cómo se dice? Estamos aquí for a reason. Yeah.
- 11:09Speaker 2: You know, and for you to be able, for your
- 11:12Speaker 2: soul to be able to advance, you know. Yes. There's
- 11:14Speaker 2: a lot of lessons that you have to learn. Almost
- 11:16Speaker 2: you have to keep graduating, graduating, graduating. And through seeing
- 11:22Speaker 2: my parents' marriage and upbringing... I've been able to consciously
- 11:28Speaker 2: make a decision to be like, I am breaking the cycle.
- 11:31Speaker 2: It ends right here. Because I'm not going to do that.
- 11:35Speaker 2: Even making the choice of like, I've been married to
- 11:39Speaker 2: Eric for 20 years. But before Eric, I had my
- 11:42Speaker 2: share of. relationships that I was just attracted to people
- 11:47Speaker 2: similar to my dad. Interesting. You know, until one day
- 11:50Speaker 2: I said, what am I doing? I don't want to
- 11:52Speaker 2: be Olga. Nothing against Olga. Olga is my mom. My life,
- 11:56Speaker 2: you know, mi mamá es un ser humano extraordinario. But
- 12:02Speaker 2: I don't want that life. Yeah. Yeah. So I had
- 12:07Speaker 2: to consciously be like, no, I am going to choose
- 12:10Speaker 2: as a life partner, partner somebody that It's not going
- 12:15Speaker 2: to put me through that. Yeah.
- 12:16Speaker 1: Yeah. And if you don't know, Rosaline, the beautiful Rosaline,
- 12:20Speaker 1: is married to the very handsome and talented, smart and
- 12:24Speaker 1: kind Eric Winter.
- 12:25Speaker 2: Good people.
- 12:26Speaker 1: So you were born and raised in Puerto Rico.
- 12:28Speaker 2: Yes.
- 12:28Speaker 1: He is American.
- 12:30Speaker 2: Born and raised in L.A. In Los Angeles, yeah.
- 12:32Speaker 1: Okay.
- 12:33Speaker 2: L.A. boy. L.A. boy.
- 12:34Speaker 1: And did you guys find your upbringings to bring– because
- 12:38Speaker 1: this can happen in any marriage– your upbringings to be
- 12:42Speaker 1: vastly different when it comes to things like this? Very different.
- 12:46Speaker 2: Very. Every, even the podcast that we had together that
- 12:49Speaker 2: we're going to continue at some point, the whole laugh
- 12:52Speaker 2: about is we're so incredibly different. But that was part of,
- 13:00Speaker 2: I think, the magic, you know, because we like culturally,
- 13:04Speaker 2: the way we think about things, you know, the fundamentals
- 13:06Speaker 2: and the things when it comes to values, you know,
- 13:08Speaker 2: and the way we want to parent our kids, then yes,
- 13:12Speaker 2: of course, you know? Okay. Pero, yeah, when everything else,
- 13:16Speaker 2: we're very, very different. And we've been able to make
- 13:19Speaker 2: it work. Not easy, you know? It's up and down,
- 13:22Speaker 2: like everything, because sometimes the difference is at the beginning
- 13:24Speaker 2: they're cute, and ha, ha, ha, until they're not cute anymore.
- 13:27Speaker 2: Until they're not. You know what I mean? And you're like, ah,
- 13:29Speaker 2: you know? That was adorable.
- 13:31Speaker 1: Now you're a pain in the ass.
- 13:32Speaker 2: Now you're a pain, yes. Pero, but for the most part,
- 13:36Speaker 2: it's been, it's amazing. And for me... This is what
- 13:40Speaker 2: I go to bed every night with. If something happens
- 13:42Speaker 2: to me, God forbid, are my kids going to be okay?
- 13:47Speaker 2: They're going to be more than okay. Yes. Yes. So
- 13:50Speaker 2: I chose correctly.
- 13:51Speaker 1: Yes, you did. Congratulations. You know, you're a working mom,
- 14:06Speaker 1: and you've been a very successful mother. And you have
- 14:09Speaker 1: two children that are younger, 14 and 8. Yes. And
- 14:14Speaker 1: your oldest, Debbie, is a rising... tennis champion. Literally saw
- 14:19Speaker 1: her on TV the other day. Little Latina Sarita Williams there.
- 14:23Speaker 1: Game face on, too. What did I see her do?
- 14:26Speaker 1: Was she dancing to the music.
- 14:27Speaker 2: She walked off because she had scored?
- 14:28Speaker 1: I'm like, she just burned. It was so great. And
- 14:33Speaker 1: your sweet boy. And the demands on parents with kids
- 14:39Speaker 1: who are good at sports. Not just in it, but
- 14:42Speaker 1: then they're good. And this country's fascination with sports. High
- 14:46Speaker 1: school sports is insane.
- 14:48Speaker 2: Out of control. I know. I know. We are a
- 14:51Speaker 2: tennis family. It consumes our lives. And we love it.
- 14:56Speaker 2: And we are so proud of her discipline and commitment.
- 14:58Speaker 2: I mean, this little girl, God bless her. She leaves school.
- 15:01Speaker 2: She leaves at 8. She doesn't come back home until
- 15:03Speaker 2: 7 or 8 o'clock at night. And then homework. Every
- 15:06Speaker 2: single day to do homework. An 8th grade student. I
- 15:11Speaker 2: don't know how she does it. Like, I have all
- 15:13Speaker 2: these other... Classmates and the parents that I'm friends with.
- 15:19Speaker 2: And sometimes I feel like a terrible mom, but she's
- 15:21Speaker 2: so independent. I don't remember Sabella ever saying to me, Mom,
- 15:25Speaker 2: can you help me with my homework? Or, oh my God,
- 15:27Speaker 2: I'm overwhelmed. I need some help. I don't even know
- 15:31Speaker 2: when she has projects. I don't know anything.
- 15:32Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 15:33Speaker 2: Anything.
- 15:33Speaker 1: But you know what's so funny is that that doesn't
- 15:35Speaker 1: surprise me.
- 15:35Speaker 2: And she's perfectly fine.
- 15:36Speaker 1: Because she does seem like she took, I don't know,
- 15:39Speaker 1: I'm sure Eric was too, but you seem very, if
- 15:42Speaker 1: not stubborn, very set. When you set your mind to something,
- 15:46Speaker 1: you get it done.
- 15:47Speaker 2: She's a mini me. And it's funny because she's a lot.
- 15:50Speaker 2: She's so fiercely independent.
- 15:52Speaker 1: She's a lot.
- 15:52Speaker 2: Do you know how old you're going to be, mom?
- 15:54Speaker 1: She's like, I did the math. She's fiercely, I know,
- 15:59Speaker 1: this is you.
- 16:00Speaker 2: She's fiercely independent. She's something else. It's really crazy. And
- 16:05Speaker 2: a lot of times it's scary. And I just go,
- 16:09Speaker 2: this girl is going to, I'm going to have premature greys,
- 16:13Speaker 2: you know, because it's a lot. I mean, I have
- 16:14Speaker 2: greys already. I actually covered them this morning.
- 16:16Speaker 1: Anyways.
- 16:17Speaker 2: Girl, we all do. And then I have to sit
- 16:21Speaker 2: down and be like, you know, when she walks right
- 16:23Speaker 2: in front of me, I just go, it's a mini me. Yeah.
- 16:25Speaker 2: I was pretty much like that. So why am I tripping?
- 16:27Speaker 1: Yeah. You know, I always said about raising my children,
- 16:31Speaker 1: especially my daughter. I'd rather her be well-informed and fiercely
- 16:37Speaker 1: independent and a scrapper than be in a situation where
- 16:41Speaker 1: she feels helpless because I sheltered her or protected her
- 16:44Speaker 1: too much from learning. This does lead to me sending
- 16:49Speaker 1: an obscene amount of video reels from Instagram saying, be
- 16:53Speaker 1: careful of this. Don't pick up a piece of tissue
- 16:56Speaker 1: paper that's on your door handle. I know Pablo's looking
- 17:00Speaker 1: at me like, there's a lot of freaks out there.
- 17:02Speaker 1: And they're leaving tissue paper on your door handle. And
- 17:06Speaker 1: they've got poison on them.
- 17:08Speaker 2: I talk to Sabella about everything.
- 17:09Speaker 1: You know why?
- 17:10Speaker 2: Because my mom is a very conservative, old school person.
- 17:15Speaker 2: Puerto Rican mom mentality. Like, I never had a conversation
- 17:19Speaker 2: with my mom about sex, about anything. I was very sheltered,
- 17:23Speaker 2: about anything. And I learned through friends and school. And
- 17:27Speaker 2: I was like, that's not going to happen with me.
- 17:28Speaker 2: And it's not the most uncomfortable conversation. And she's just like, no,
- 17:32Speaker 2: it's disgusting. I don't want to hear about it. You know,
- 17:33Speaker 2: she hates it. But it's super important that I want
- 17:37Speaker 2: her to know everything about everything from mom and dad.
- 17:39Speaker 1: Yes. That's it.
- 17:41Speaker 2: Of course.
- 17:42Speaker 1: You were one of three. You have two or three
- 17:44Speaker 1: older brothers.
- 17:45Speaker 2: We're four. I'm the youngest one and the only girl.
- 17:47Speaker 1: And the only girl. So there was a sense of,
- 17:51Speaker 1: and your mother didn't communicate to you about these things.
- 17:53Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 17:54Speaker 1: And didn't talk about sex.
- 17:56Speaker 2: No.
- 17:56Speaker 1: So I'm guessing she didn't talk to you about midlife, menopause,
- 17:59Speaker 1: any of that stuff, right?
- 18:01Speaker 2: So.
- 18:02Speaker 1: Nada. Yet you.
- 18:05Speaker 2: Nada.
- 18:05Speaker 1: You became, you know, you created your own career. Yes.
- 18:10Speaker 1: And you were a beauty queen. You were a pageant queen.
- 18:13Speaker 1: And you're an educated queen. And you got your career
- 18:17Speaker 1: launched here in the entertainment industry. So what do you
- 18:21Speaker 1: bring to Sebi with this, your daughter? What do you
- 18:25Speaker 1: bring to her that your mother didn't bring to you
- 18:27Speaker 1: that you want her to know going in? Because I
- 18:29Speaker 1: always feel like the holy grail is if now that
- 18:32Speaker 1: we know.
- 18:33Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 18:33Speaker 1: And we break that cycle, we teach them as early
- 18:36Speaker 1: as possible.
- 18:37Speaker 2: Claro, claro. Talking to her about all the things that
- 18:41Speaker 2: I wish my mom would have talked to me about.
- 18:44Speaker 2: Allowing her, you know, my mom did something right. My
- 18:47Speaker 2: mom lived her life through me. I think my mom
- 18:49Speaker 2: was a frustrated entertainer. Okay. My mom was very funny.
- 18:52Speaker 2: My mom can imitate anybody like she was a proper
- 18:55Speaker 2: professional imitator. It's really, really funny. She's really a funny lady.
- 18:59Speaker 2: So that's why since I was a little girl, I
- 19:01Speaker 2: was dancing ballet by four. I was playing piano at
- 19:03Speaker 2: six and she would submit me for commercials. I was
- 19:06Speaker 2: already doing TV in Puerto Rico when I was 19.
- 19:08Speaker 2: And it was all my mom pushing me because that's
- 19:11Speaker 2: what she wanted. Yeah. She got very lucky that I
- 19:14Speaker 2: loved it. It wasn't like I'm doing it against my
- 19:16Speaker 2: will and I hate it. I don't want to. I
- 19:18Speaker 2: hate it. You know, like I wanted Sabella to be
- 19:19Speaker 2: a ballerina because I grew up as a dancer my
- 19:21Speaker 2: whole life. And Sabella at 11 said to me, I
- 19:24Speaker 2: hate ballet.
- 19:27Speaker 1: That's it.
- 19:27Speaker 2: Even before 11. She's like, I don't want to do it. So, okay,
- 19:30Speaker 2: so you don't have to do it. I never did
- 19:31Speaker 2: that with my mom. It was never an issue because
- 19:33Speaker 2: I liked it. I liked it. So... When I decided
- 19:38Speaker 2: to leave college because I didn't finish because I wanted
- 19:40Speaker 2: to move to New York to pursue musical theater and
- 19:42Speaker 2: I wanted to do Broadway and I wanted to then
- 19:44Speaker 2: go to Hollywood, my father took it not as good
- 19:47Speaker 2: because I had a one-year disability. finish and he's like,
- 19:51Speaker 2: what are we talking about? I said, I'm out. My
- 19:53Speaker 2: mom wasn't happy by any means, but That's what she
- 19:57Speaker 2: grew me to be. So it wasn't a surprise when
- 20:00Speaker 2: I said, I just want to do art, because that's
- 20:02Speaker 2: what you wanted me to do. And she was very
- 20:05Speaker 2: adamant about, I'm not going to cut your wings. I
- 20:08Speaker 2: don't allow anybody to do that to you. You want
- 20:10Speaker 2: to go? Go ahead. And that was something very valuable,
- 20:14Speaker 2: that even though she was hypercritical, and my mom was
- 20:16Speaker 2: always very judgmental and hard. It was hard. It was
- 20:19Speaker 2: tough love. She always planted a seed inside my head about,
- 20:25Speaker 2: you're so special. Yeah. You're so special. You're a star.
- 20:29Speaker 2: Go get it. Yeah. You know, and that has been incredible.
- 20:32Speaker 2: And that's something that I am taking and I'm always praising.
- 20:36Speaker 2: I don't, well, even though Sabella is funny, it's funny
- 20:40Speaker 2: because I don't, I don't mean to do it. I
- 20:43Speaker 2: don't mean to do it, you know, but I guess
- 20:44Speaker 2: it's all God. I have a way because I'm very strong.
- 20:47Speaker 1: You know, you break the cycle, but there's a few tentacles.
- 20:50Speaker 2: I know, but I don't know I'm doing it. Like
- 20:52Speaker 2: I like, she gets so petrified when I go to
- 20:55Speaker 2: her tournaments.
- 20:56Speaker 1: Oh, okay.
- 20:57Speaker 2: Why? And that's a whole new story. I don't know.
- 20:59Speaker 2: She said that the way I'm looking at her is
- 21:01Speaker 2: very intimidating and it blocks her. I'm not trying to
- 21:05Speaker 2: do anything. No. I'm literally with my hat on my
- 21:08Speaker 2: glasses like this. I don't know what energy I'm giving.
- 21:12Speaker 2: She's like, I cannot deal with you. I didn't know
- 21:15Speaker 2: anything about that. You're looking like Anna Wintour. I'm like that. No,
- 21:19Speaker 2: before I was crazy. Before I was a crazy parent,
- 21:21Speaker 2: before I knew that tennis, you can't say anything. You're like,
- 21:23Speaker 2: do it, do it. She's the one getting kicked out
- 21:31Speaker 2: of Wimbledon. No, no, no. They have kicked us out.
- 21:36Speaker 2: They have kicked you out. Me and Eric, we're crazy.
- 21:39Speaker 2: Now we know better. So we're like this, right?
- 21:42Speaker 1: Now you've assumed.
- 21:42Speaker 2: But she says, there's something that you do that makes
- 21:45Speaker 2: me so nervous, you know? My mom was the same way,
- 21:51Speaker 2: but she would verbalize it. Después de la clase. Very,
- 21:58Speaker 2: very always on me. With Sabela, I try not to
- 22:01Speaker 2: do that. But I guess there's something about the way
- 22:03Speaker 2: I'm looking at her that she feels judged already. So
- 22:06Speaker 2: I have to work on that. Because I swear to you,
- 22:09Speaker 2: I don't mean to.
- 22:10Speaker 1: You don't have to paint a smile on your face
- 22:12Speaker 1: or something. You're looking like the Joker.
- 22:14Speaker 2: I know. But I'm trying to listen. I'm trying to be...
- 22:19Speaker 2: Como te digo, you know, we always want to be
- 22:21Speaker 2: best friends with our kids. And I'm all about, I
- 22:23Speaker 2: want to, I want her, I want to be, I
- 22:25Speaker 2: want her to be my girl. I want her to
- 22:27Speaker 2: be able to tell me anything and everything. But I
- 22:30Speaker 2: also believe, and that's the old school Puerto Rican in me,
- 22:34Speaker 2: but I'm still alpha. I'm mom.
- 22:36Speaker 1: Yeah, of course you are.
- 22:37Speaker 2: Do you know what I mean? So we can be
- 22:38Speaker 2: best friends.
- 22:43Speaker 1: I'll never forget when my daughter was playing with a
- 22:45Speaker 1: traveling softball team. And, you know, it was a vibrant family.
- 22:48Speaker 1: All the families were very vibrant, but I was definitely
- 22:51Speaker 1: the loudest. So she would be, you know, coming around
- 22:54Speaker 1: third and I'm like, So she's like, Mom, you're embarrassing me.
- 22:59Speaker 1: Don't do it anymore.
- 23:00Speaker 2: I was like, fine.
- 23:01Speaker 1: So the next game, I was like, I'm not saying anything.
- 23:04Speaker 1: She hits a home run. And there was a parent, Rosa,
- 23:08Speaker 1: who's sitting in front of me. And all of a sudden,
- 23:10Speaker 1: I look and I get a text from Rosa. She goes, hey,
- 23:12Speaker 1: Sophie just got a home run. I was like, Rosa,
- 23:15Speaker 1: I'm right here. And she's like, oh, it's so quiet.
- 23:18Speaker 1: I didn't even know.
- 23:18Speaker 2: I thought you were here.
- 23:20Speaker 1: And then that night, Sophie goes, mom, you can cheer
- 23:23Speaker 1: again if you want. I'm like, yes, you see, you see, yeah,
- 23:28Speaker 1: it comes back around. So you, you, you know, growing
- 23:31Speaker 1: up in Puerto Rico and, and there's this life that
- 23:35Speaker 1: you are pursuing your studies and then you go through
- 23:38Speaker 1: the beauty pageant world and you're successful at it. Did
- 23:41Speaker 1: that feed anything into what you brought up before about
- 23:46Speaker 1: longevity in Hollywood? But just as a woman, it's not
- 23:49Speaker 1: even have to do with Hollywood as much as, as
- 23:51Speaker 1: a woman, does it bring up, things, other things that
- 23:54Speaker 1: you don't want to pass on to Sebi about where
- 23:58Speaker 1: we are, what's happening with our bodies, what's happening with
- 24:01Speaker 1: our skin, what's happening with the fact that this is
- 24:04Speaker 1: how we look now, but at 88, we're going to.
- 24:06Speaker 2: But you know what's happening? It's a different generation, Diana.
- 24:10Speaker 2: When we were growing up, social media didn't exist.
- 24:12Speaker 1: Yeah, thank God.
- 24:13Speaker 2: So we didn't have that constant influence, you know, of like,
- 24:17Speaker 2: this is what you should look like. Right. That didn't exist.
- 24:20Speaker 2: So nowadays, I feel like it doesn't matter how much
- 24:23Speaker 2: I try to tell Sabella, try to avoid, don't do this,
- 24:28Speaker 2: don't do that. That's not what beauty is. You know, like,
- 24:31Speaker 2: they're constantly bombarded with this illusion of what beauty is
- 24:35Speaker 2: and longevity that is 99% not even true. And that's
- 24:38Speaker 2: why I do teach her that. You know, when she says,
- 24:40Speaker 2: I'm going gaga about this girl. She's the most beautiful
- 24:43Speaker 2: thing in the world. Because I know the truth. Mm-hmm.
- 24:47Speaker 2: I said, I want you to understand, Sebi, there's filters
- 24:49Speaker 2: in there. There's surgeries. You know, when you look at her,
- 24:52Speaker 2: she's only 25. But if she didn't do all the work,
- 24:55Speaker 2: she wouldn't look like this 25-year-old.
- 24:56Speaker 1: It's amazing how young they're getting work done.
- 25:00Speaker 2: And their mind is blown. Like I said, Bella a
- 25:02Speaker 2: lot of times fights me. Like, you don't know that.
- 25:04Speaker 2: I said, Mommy, I know for a fact. You know,
- 25:06Speaker 2: if I show you everything, the lips is not, everything
- 25:09Speaker 2: is different. So that's not who that person is.
- 25:12Speaker 3: Right.
- 25:13Speaker 2: And I try to teach her, you know, you're so beautiful.
- 25:15Speaker 2: And your choices are going to be your choices, but
- 25:17Speaker 2: I'm trying to, I want her to be so secure
- 25:21Speaker 2: about her looks, you know, that she's the bomb, you know,
- 25:25Speaker 2: that you don't have to get so affected. by what
- 25:29Speaker 2: you see, because it's not reality. But that's all they know.
- 25:33Speaker 2: So I know it's not reality, but for her to
- 25:36Speaker 2: comprehend that it's not reality, it's kind of like, what
- 25:38Speaker 2: are you talking about? Because it's normalized.
- 25:42Speaker 1: And there's such an innocence there, too, of believing what
- 25:44Speaker 1: they see. And we're just too jaded. We're too jaded.
- 25:48Speaker 2: And once they normalize it, they block you out.
- 25:50Speaker 1: That's even harder. They block you out.
- 25:52Speaker 2: You don't know what you're talking about.
- 25:55Speaker 1: Have you always been one to embrace... your journey with
- 25:59Speaker 1: beauty inside and out? Do you face complexes? Do you
- 26:05Speaker 1: pick on yourself? Are you kind to yourself?
- 26:07Speaker 2: A little bit of everything. You know, a little bit
- 26:09Speaker 2: of everything. It's funny, before I wasn't as aware. Now,
- 26:18Speaker 2: and I share this with you. First of all, what
- 26:22Speaker 2: we do for a living, it's impossible not to get self-conscious. Sure, sure.
- 26:26Speaker 2: When you... are constantly competing for things, you know? You're competing,
- 26:29Speaker 2: you're competing, you're like always applying for a job every
- 26:32Speaker 2: single day of your life and they will just look
- 26:35Speaker 2: at you, I don't like her hair, ah, she reminds
- 26:36Speaker 2: me of my cousin that I can't stand, you know?
- 26:40Speaker 2: It's like, it's so unpredictable and it's hard when people
- 26:45Speaker 2: that you look up to that they're incredible actresses and
- 26:48Speaker 2: even those that you thought they will never touch their faces,
- 26:50Speaker 2: they will never do that, you know? And they're doing it,
- 26:52Speaker 2: you just go, oh my God, what the heck, you know?
- 26:55Speaker 2: What is going on? And It is. It is hard.
- 26:58Speaker 2: I'm not going to lie. I did a hysterectomy maybe
- 27:01Speaker 2: now four years ago. It was a choice that I
- 27:04Speaker 2: made because I didn't want to live in pain. And
- 27:06Speaker 2: I had several people tell me, are you conscious and
- 27:09Speaker 2: are you aware that your skin is going to change dramatically?
- 27:14Speaker 2: Because I've been a woman that I have never had
- 27:16Speaker 2: issues with my skin.
- 27:16Speaker 1: Right.
- 27:17Speaker 2: I'm invincible. You know what I mean? I don't look
- 27:19Speaker 2: my age. I eat healthy. I don't do drugs. I
- 27:21Speaker 2: don't smoke. I don't drink. It's like nothing's going to
- 27:23Speaker 2: happen with my skin. I'm like, Like an alien, you know?
- 27:27Speaker 1: You wear sunblock.
- 27:28Speaker 2: You know, I do everything right. Yes. And when you
- 27:32Speaker 2: see it happening.
- 27:35Speaker 1: From a hysterectomy.
- 27:36Speaker 2: Yeah, the quality of the skin changes. Wow. I wasn't
- 27:38Speaker 2: aware of that. And I wasn't supplementing with HRT, as
- 27:42Speaker 2: you call it. I wasn't doing the estrogen and the progesterone,
- 27:44Speaker 2: the testosterone. I started doing that two years after when
- 27:47Speaker 2: I was like, I feel like shit. You know what
- 27:50Speaker 2: I mean? Why do I feel like I'm depleted, you know? Oh,
- 27:54Speaker 2: because you have to do hormones. And I remember I'm
- 27:58Speaker 2: seeing my– everything changes. I see everything changing.
- 28:03Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 28:04Speaker 2: But I don't want to live in pain. So it's
- 28:06Speaker 2: a choice that I made and it is what it is.
- 28:09Speaker 2: So I try to– I do– not deserve and I
- 28:13Speaker 2: do things– To try to keep myself going and looking fabulous.
- 28:19Speaker 2: But it's not the same anymore. You know, I don't
- 28:20Speaker 2: know if this happens to you. And this is really crazy.
- 28:23Speaker 2: And it's like a big wake-up call. You see a casting, right?
- 28:27Speaker 2: And you see somebody's cast.
- 28:29Speaker 1: In this whatever movie.
- 28:30Speaker 2: And you see this beautiful Latina. And I'm still in
- 28:34Speaker 2: this delusion of, I could have done that. Uh-huh. And
- 28:38Speaker 2: he's like, I don't understand. How come I didn't go
- 28:39Speaker 2: over that? I'm calling my agent. The fuck? You know
- 28:41Speaker 2: what I mean? Like, I didn't even go over that.
- 28:43Speaker 2: I didn't know that that was happening. Did you submit me?
- 28:46Speaker 2: You know what I mean? I didn't get a meeting.
- 28:47Speaker 1: Right?
- 28:48Speaker 2: And then the girl they get is 32. Yeah. But
- 28:53Speaker 2: I look at her and I look at me and
- 28:55Speaker 2: I'm so crazy that I don't see a difference.
- 28:58Speaker 1: I don't know if that's crazy. I think that's the
- 29:00Speaker 1: most astounding self-confidence that you should have.
- 29:04Speaker 2: I don't see it.
- 29:05Speaker 1: Because I definitely know when I see somebody who's 25
- 29:07Speaker 1: years younger than me, I'm like, this bitch is 25
- 29:09Speaker 1: years younger than me.
- 29:09Speaker 2: No, but.
- 29:10Speaker 1: But when I see them and I find out that
- 29:12Speaker 1: we're actually, you know, not.
- 29:13Speaker 2: That you look... That I look great.
- 29:15Speaker 1: I could be their sister.
- 29:16Speaker 2: Exactly right. That's what's happening. But then I go, oh,
- 29:19Speaker 2: but she's 32. I can be the mother. And then
- 29:22Speaker 2: I go, okay, now I get it. Controlate, because she's
- 29:26Speaker 2: a baby. You know what I mean? Why are you
- 29:28Speaker 2: even thinking that you can do that? She's 32 years old.
- 29:31Speaker 2: But in my delusion, if I see her down the street,
- 29:35Speaker 2: I'm not thinking I look horrible next to her. No, right.
- 29:38Speaker 1: I think you should stay that way.
- 29:40Speaker 2: Am I crazy? No. I think I'm crazy.
- 29:42Speaker 1: I think you should keep that mindset. The longer you
- 29:45Speaker 1: think I look like this 32-year-old, I'm sure the better.
- 29:48Speaker 2: For your heart and soul. I mean, not 32, but
- 29:50Speaker 2: at least 40.
- 29:50Speaker 1: Whatever.
- 29:51Speaker 2: Stay there.
- 29:52Speaker 1: Stay there. I remember somebody once said to me recently,
- 29:55Speaker 1: like my last birthday, because I'm in my mid-50s, right?
- 29:58Speaker 1: And someone said, you don't look a day over 45.
- 29:59Speaker 1: And I'm like, okay, hold on a second. If you're
- 30:02Speaker 1: going to compliment me, don't fucking go 10 years younger.
- 30:05Speaker 1: Be like 25. Something that I'm.
- 30:08Speaker 2: Nowhere near, but 45? How old do you fucking think
- 30:11Speaker 2: I am? It's like saying that to an 80-year-old. But
- 30:14Speaker 2: what is it?
- 30:15Speaker 1: I don't know what they're doing. They're selling their soul somewhere.
- 30:24Speaker 1: But I will say this. It doesn't just happen to us.
- 30:26Speaker 1: My bestie of over 40 years, we do the Happy
- 30:29Speaker 1: Hour segments, Happy Hour with Tina. She's not in the business,
- 30:32Speaker 1: but she sees enough of what's going on, you know,
- 30:35Speaker 1: on TV or on Instagram, whatever, that she's like, I
- 30:37Speaker 1: want to get, she's got a, I said, I have
- 30:39Speaker 1: a Yolanda.
- 30:40Speaker 3: Okay.
- 30:41Speaker 2: She's got a raisin here. A raisin? I have a raisin.
- 30:46Speaker 2: A raisin. You don't have bingo arms, do you? Bingo. Oh,
- 30:51Speaker 2: my God. Yeah. This is funny. This just happened two
- 30:54Speaker 2: days ago. I'm obsessed with Pilates. Right? I'm obsessed with Pilates.
- 30:57Speaker 2: So I've tried to do it every single day. And
- 30:58Speaker 2: this class, I was the only one that showed up.
- 31:01Speaker 2: So I had a private. Right? And I think she
- 31:03Speaker 2: was Puerto Rican, the girl. the teacher, I've never seen
- 31:05Speaker 2: her before. Very, very cool. So I don't know if
- 31:08Speaker 2: it was, you have mirrors over here, you have mirrors
- 31:09Speaker 2: in the back, and then there was a skylight and
- 31:11Speaker 2: the lighting. It's a gorgeous studio, right? So I'm doing
- 31:14Speaker 2: like the machine and I'm going like that, doing this muscle.
- 31:16Speaker 2: I'm going like that. And I'm looking, I have the
- 31:19Speaker 2: sun hitting me here and I'm looking through the mirror.
- 31:22Speaker 2: And this here, Arrugado como con celulitis. Y yo, this
- 31:25Speaker 2: is not fucking happening.
- 31:25Speaker 1: Wait a minute.
- 31:26Speaker 2: This is not happening to me.
- 31:27Speaker 1: Wrinkled with cellulite.
- 31:28Speaker 2: She said it for those of you.
- 31:30Speaker 1: She said basically riddled with cellulite.
- 31:32Speaker 2: I don't know what the heck it was. Y yo
- 31:34Speaker 2: estoy haciendo la máquina and I'm going.
- 31:37Speaker 1: Oh, my God.
- 31:38Speaker 2: I died. And I'm going, this is 53. Welcome to
- 31:42Speaker 2: freaking 53. Because I'm going, I think I look great,
- 31:45Speaker 2: but I don't know what's happening.
- 31:47Speaker 1: What's happening? You wrote, produced, and directed a film called
- 31:51Speaker 1: Diario Mujer.
- 31:56Speaker 3: Y Café.
- 32:06Speaker 1: I always get the three wrong.
- 32:07Speaker 2: Mujer y Café.
- 32:09Speaker 1: Mujer y Café.
- 32:09Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 32:10Speaker 1: And it's about a group of girlfriends who were high
- 32:14Speaker 1: school besties.
- 32:15Speaker 2: Yes.
- 32:15Speaker 1: And they finally, like they stay in touch, but they
- 32:18Speaker 1: decided to really reunite and go on a girls trip.
- 32:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 32:21Speaker 1: Where they all end up. facing the conflicts with each
- 32:26Speaker 1: other and the conflicts within themselves. And it's like a midlife.
- 32:29Speaker 1: It's a group of women in midlife. Did you learn...
- 32:32Speaker 1: First of all, this was such a labor of love
- 32:34Speaker 1: and you didn't start this when you were 20. You
- 32:36Speaker 1: started this when you were, you know, what, late 40s,
- 32:38Speaker 1: early 50s? And so to take on a task... to
- 32:44Speaker 1: that kind of level of completion that you didn't have
- 32:46Speaker 1: decades of doing, you have been acting and whatnot, speaks
- 32:50Speaker 1: to all women. We can pick up and try something
- 32:53Speaker 1: or go forward in doing something that we've always wanted
- 32:55Speaker 1: to do or we've never been able to take the
- 32:58Speaker 1: ball all the way across the finish line, and you did.
- 33:01Speaker 1: I loved every second of it.
- 33:02Speaker 2: It was a headache. It was blood, sweat, and tears.
- 33:06Speaker 1: What did you learn about yourself?
- 33:08Speaker 2: That I can do anything.
- 33:09Speaker 1: Yes, you can.
- 33:10Speaker 2: I can do anything. Yes, you can. I can't do anything.
- 33:13Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 33:14Speaker 2: It's really intense. Yeah. I just go, I just need
- 33:17Speaker 2: to say that I'm going to do it. And it
- 33:20Speaker 2: was a massive list. It was seven years, seven years
- 33:22Speaker 2: of like trying to get the, getting the finance, then
- 33:24Speaker 2: the whole thing falling apart. It was so many mountains
- 33:28Speaker 2: and boom. And you're like, Oh my God, what am
- 33:30Speaker 2: I doing? What am I doing? I can just be
- 33:31Speaker 2: in front of the camera. You know what I mean?
- 33:33Speaker 2: What am I doing? But I had this desire to
- 33:35Speaker 2: direct and I knew that I was going to be
- 33:37Speaker 2: good at it. And, and I was always afraid because
- 33:40Speaker 2: I didn't go to, Film school, so how am I
- 33:43Speaker 2: going to communicate with a DP? Like, how am I
- 33:44Speaker 2: going to do that? Until I talk to key people.
- 33:47Speaker 2: You know how God sends you angels? Yes. To just
- 33:50Speaker 2: give you one phrase. Yes. One conversation, one word, you know,
- 33:54Speaker 2: and they just disappear. And you just go, click. Yeah. Okay,
- 33:58Speaker 2: it clicked. And so just tell your story. You know,
- 34:01Speaker 2: you have enough experience in front of the camera. You've
- 34:03Speaker 2: been observing for 30 years how they do it. Yes.
- 34:07Speaker 2: So why can't you do that?
- 34:07Speaker 1: You've been a good student.
- 34:08Speaker 2: You're a good learner. And it was a surreal, monumental experience.
- 34:12Speaker 2: I can't wait to do it again.
- 34:15Speaker 1: And where can we see that? Because I've seen it
- 34:17Speaker 1: multiple times. Can we see it?
- 34:19Speaker 2: It's on Amazon, Apple, all the streamers. Yeah, everywhere.
- 34:21Speaker 1: It's a wonderful show. And even if you don't speak Spanish,
- 34:24Speaker 1: the subtitles are great. There's some Spanglish in it. I
- 34:27Speaker 1: resonated with all the characters, but the one in particular.
- 34:31Speaker 1: And I just love that you finished that journey because
- 34:33Speaker 1: I think it's a testament to us. We're not done. We,
- 34:37Speaker 1: at this age, society would like to say or accuse
- 34:39Speaker 1: us of being on the downhill slope. And the fact
- 34:42Speaker 1: of the matter is that we still have dreams that,
- 34:44Speaker 1: like for myself, I'm just really now able to dive
- 34:47Speaker 1: into because my kids have gone off and I had
- 34:51Speaker 1: to be home and work, but not too far because
- 34:54Speaker 1: I didn't have someone else there. So now is my time.
- 34:58Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 34:58Speaker 1: And I want to do a lot of things that
- 35:01Speaker 1: I am afraid of.
- 35:02Speaker 2: No, no, no.
- 35:02Speaker 1: But I can't. I have to stop listening to that clock.
- 35:04Speaker 2: Do. Yes. And just do.
- 35:06Speaker 1: Just keep doing.
- 35:07Speaker 2: Can I tell you how I think my favorite, my
- 35:09Speaker 2: 40s and my 50s have been amazing. Yeah. I think
- 35:11Speaker 2: it's my favorite part. Like I'm listening. I had a
- 35:14Speaker 2: lot of fun and a lot of accomplishments, you know,
- 35:16Speaker 2: and ups and downs and then had my kids. But I,
- 35:19Speaker 2: I honestly, I can. Yeah. My 40s have been great.
- 35:24Speaker 2: Mm hmm. My 50s, I'm 53. I'm just starting. Yeah.
- 35:29Speaker 1: It's amazing. When I start off this segment, this show,
- 35:33Speaker 1: and I always say navigating life's most fantastic bullshit, it
- 35:36Speaker 1: is an oxymoron because it's a lot of bullshit and
- 35:39Speaker 1: it's a lot of fantastic discovery. And one of the
- 35:41Speaker 1: biggest things in this chapter is discovering who are your friends,
- 35:45Speaker 1: who are the women that you want to– the company
- 35:48Speaker 1: you keep.
- 35:48Speaker 2: Got it.
- 35:49Speaker 1: Because we ain't got time for bullshit. And we had
- 35:53Speaker 1: a guest who likes it. Can we show this? We
- 35:55Speaker 1: have a guest that likes to talk about, she's a
- 35:58Speaker 1: big supporter, and she uplifts her girlfriends. And we learned
- 36:02Speaker 1: specifically how she uplifts you, and it was hilarious. I'm
- 36:06Speaker 1: sure you're aware of it to a certain degree, but let's.
- 36:09Speaker 3: I read a script, and I go into the audition,
- 36:11Speaker 3: and I go, and it's somebody with an accent. And
- 36:14Speaker 3: I don't do accents very well, And so they're like, okay.
- 36:18Speaker 3: Talking to me, I go, you guys know who would
- 36:20Speaker 3: be great for this part? And she has an amazing accent.
- 36:22Speaker 3: Rosalind Sanchez. And I pitched her so many times. And
- 36:25Speaker 3: my agent finally called me. He goes, if you fucking
- 36:27Speaker 3: go in one more room and pitch Rosalind Sanchez. And
- 36:30Speaker 3: I was like, she's just better.
- 36:32Speaker 2: She's perfect for the part. Like, why are they seeing me? Oh,
- 36:37Speaker 2: my God.
- 36:38Speaker 1: I love her.
- 36:38Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 36:39Speaker 1: I want to ask one quick question and then go
- 36:41Speaker 1: on to our rapid fire. But these best decades of
- 36:47Speaker 1: your life, as you said, in your 40s and 50s,
- 36:49Speaker 1: has included this wonderful marriage. You've been together with Eric
- 36:53Speaker 1: for how many years?
- 36:54Speaker 2: 20 years.
- 36:54Speaker 1: 20 years. So there's a lot of growing up in
- 36:57Speaker 1: that 20 years. What would you say is your secret
- 37:02Speaker 1: at this stage of keeping things healthy and balanced?
- 37:08Speaker 2: So support has been the number one thing, yeah, for
- 37:11Speaker 2: us because we both do the same thing. Yeah. And
- 37:14Speaker 2: it's very hard when you have two actors as part
- 37:18Speaker 2: of the same household, you know?
- 37:19Speaker 1: In the same competitive profession.
- 37:20Speaker 2: It is competitive and it's up and down, you know,
- 37:23Speaker 2: and one is doing well. Like for the most part,
- 37:25Speaker 2: I was like the breadwinner, you know? And it's funny
- 37:28Speaker 2: because when I met Eric, I started dating Eric and
- 37:31Speaker 2: he just came out of doing a soap and I
- 37:32Speaker 2: always saw like a star. I'm going, this guy is
- 37:34Speaker 2: going to be the next Brad Pitt. And I thought
- 37:36Speaker 2: it was going to happen within five years. And it's
- 37:38Speaker 2: been such a long road. And now finally, because of
- 37:41Speaker 2: The Rookie and that vehicle that is a massive global success,
- 37:44Speaker 2: he's finally, he made it. You know, like he is,
- 37:48Speaker 2: he can even walk. They have tapped into him. They
- 37:50Speaker 2: love him and they love the character. And it is
- 37:53Speaker 2: fascinating to see the reaction that he gets when he
- 37:55Speaker 2: walks down the street. But it happened in his 50s,
- 37:57Speaker 2: which I never thought. That blows me away that I'm going...
- 38:01Speaker 2: It took him this long, but it finally happened. So
- 38:04Speaker 2: now there's a shift in dynamic. Yeah.
- 38:06Speaker 3: You know?
- 38:06Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 38:07Speaker 2: Now I'm not working as much. I don't want to relocate.
- 38:10Speaker 2: I've said I want to be more of a mom. Yeah.
- 38:12Speaker 2: But I mean, crazy ambitious. Yeah. You know, and I'm
- 38:15Speaker 2: used to always being the one here. So now it's
- 38:19Speaker 2: this constant, now it's his moment. So what do I
- 38:22Speaker 2: have to do? I need to compliment what he's doing.
- 38:25Speaker 2: I need to be the champ. You know, the Palm Republic,
- 38:29Speaker 2: it all came... Eric, your show is so massive. You're
- 38:32Speaker 2: so likable. You're so beautiful. You're like a natural entrepreneur
- 38:37Speaker 2: because Eric is somebody that walks into a room and
- 38:40Speaker 2: he's just, people love him. They want to engage. And
- 38:43Speaker 2: he speaks great. He's funny. And I say, you need
- 38:46Speaker 2: to brand. I'm not interested. You need to get into
- 38:48Speaker 2: social media. I hate TikTok. I hate it. So you
- 38:51Speaker 2: have to capitalize. It's now.
- 38:52Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 38:53Speaker 2: It's now. Yeah.
- 38:54Speaker 1: Capitalize that moment.
- 38:55Speaker 2: You have this window. Okay? Let's go for it. Let's
- 38:57Speaker 2: do a rom. And listen, it's a lot of work.
- 39:00Speaker 2: It's a lot of work. But he's thriving. So support
- 39:05Speaker 2: has been the number one thing. Even when I'm doing
- 39:07Speaker 2: amazing and he's doing okay, I need to make sure
- 39:10Speaker 2: that he's looking up to me. When he's doing amazing
- 39:12Speaker 2: and I'm just here, I need to make sure that
- 39:14Speaker 2: I'm happy for you. I'm so glad that I was
- 39:16Speaker 2: able to be a part of that journey. Yes. And
- 39:20Speaker 2: the same thing with him. So that's number one. And
- 39:23Speaker 2: number two is your sense of humor. you know, because
- 39:25Speaker 2: we're so different. If we don't make fun of each other,
- 39:28Speaker 2: it'll be brutal.
- 39:29Speaker 1: Yeah, it'll be brutal. But I do love seeing you
- 39:31Speaker 1: go out, you know, when he was in your film.
- 39:35Speaker 1: And when he started speaking Spanish, I'm like, this is
- 39:37Speaker 1: the most adorable thing I've ever seen in my life.
- 39:40Speaker 1: And then afterwards, because I went to a screening, he
- 39:42Speaker 1: was so humble. He's like, I know my Spanish wasn't good.
- 39:44Speaker 1: I'm like, who are you apologizing to? Your Spanish was perfect.
- 39:47Speaker 2: Yes, he did really well.
- 39:48Speaker 1: I just feel like you guys really complement each other.
- 39:50Speaker 1: He embraces everything about you and everything you bring in
- 39:55Speaker 1: your history as you do him.
- 39:57Speaker 2: Yeah, it's been amazing. It's funny because I think that
- 39:59Speaker 2: he always tells people, He's a Cancer, I'm an Aries.
- 40:02Speaker 2: I don't know if you believe in astrology. I used to,
- 40:04Speaker 2: now I don't pay attention to it anymore. But it's fascinating.
- 40:09Speaker 2: He always says that it's been 20 years, but I
- 40:12Speaker 2: always keep him guessing. He doesn't really know what I'm thinking.
- 40:16Speaker 1: Perfect.
- 40:16Speaker 2: And I love it. Beautiful. I'm going good.
- 40:21Speaker 1: My job here is done. Sammy, take notes. Dylan, prepare yourself.
- 40:27Speaker 2: I know. It's awesome. It's awesome.
- 40:31Speaker 1: That's so good. Okay, well then on that note, let
- 40:34Speaker 1: me do a little rapid fire. Okay. And this rapid
- 40:37Speaker 1: fire is who handles this shit better, you or Eric?
- 40:40Speaker 2: Okay? Okay.
- 40:41Speaker 1: The different topics. Here we go. Fixing broken shit around
- 40:44Speaker 1: the house.
- 40:44Speaker 2: Eric.
- 40:46Speaker 1: She's like, high school math homework.
- 40:49Speaker 2: Eric.
- 40:51Speaker 1: College search?
- 40:53Speaker 2: Eric. Are you home? What happened? Even at school, all
- 41:00Speaker 2: the parents, for play dates, they contact Eric because they
- 41:03Speaker 2: know that I'm not going to reply. I'm terrible. He's
- 41:08Speaker 2: the one man who answers his phone and replies to
- 41:12Speaker 2: the text. Okay. Okay.
- 41:13Speaker 1: Who's most romantic?
- 41:15Speaker 2: If you say Eric.
- 41:16Speaker 1: Eric.
- 41:17Speaker 2: That's why I keep on guessing. No wonder.
- 41:21Speaker 1: I know.
- 41:21Speaker 2: He's like, she doesn't answer. She doesn't reply.
- 41:23Speaker 1: She's just available.
- 41:24Speaker 2: This is embarrassing. This is embarrassing.
- 41:27Speaker 1: Okay.
- 41:27Speaker 2: Who's sexier?
- 41:30Speaker 1: You should just give yourself that one whether it's Eric
- 41:33Speaker 1: or not.
- 41:36Speaker 2: I'm sexier.
- 41:37Speaker 1: Okay. Who has more hair product? Because that man has
- 41:41Speaker 1: some perfect hair.
- 41:43Speaker 2: You know, it might be a tie because Eric is
- 41:47Speaker 2: a metro. Metro! Metro! They're like, this is him putting
- 41:53Speaker 2: creams every single night. He's very funny. He's very funny.
- 41:55Speaker 1: You're giving away your secret.
- 41:56Speaker 2: Oh, my God. He's very funny.
- 41:57Speaker 1: I mean, he is. He's incredibly handsome, and he's also pretty.
- 42:00Speaker 2: He's pretty and handsome, and he takes care of himself beyond. Well, look.
- 42:04Speaker 2: He was at the dermatologist this morning. He said, what happened?
- 42:07Speaker 2: I just had this little rash over here. You don't
- 42:08Speaker 2: have anything over there. I have a little rash over here.
- 42:11Speaker 2: So he went to the dermatologist, and on the way here,
- 42:13Speaker 2: he called me. Everything is okay. I have nothing. I
- 42:15Speaker 2: told you it was nothing.
- 42:17Speaker 1: I could have saved you $ 125.
- 42:19Speaker 2: $ 125.
- 42:20Speaker 1: And a trip to CBS for some cortisol.
- 42:22Speaker 2: I have a little dot over here. It's funny. It's funny.
- 42:24Speaker 2: I love it.
- 42:26Speaker 1: This is a perfect relationship. I love this so much.
- 42:30Speaker 2: Oh, my God.
- 42:31Speaker 1: If you can keep a Metro guessing, you have one
- 42:34Speaker 1: that's the holy grail.
- 42:35Speaker 2: Exactly. You've done well.
- 42:37Speaker 1: I know that I've done well in having a girlfriend
- 42:40Speaker 1: like you in my life. Oh, thank you. This was
- 42:43Speaker 1: one of the one and only times in probably the
- 42:45Speaker 1: last five years that we've been able to sit down
- 42:48Speaker 1: and actually talk.
- 42:49Speaker 2: Because we see each other, but it's a lot of people.
- 42:51Speaker 1: Always something.
- 42:53Speaker 2: And then three words and it's chaotic.
- 42:55Speaker 1: So I love it. But you know what? Just like
- 42:57Speaker 1: our girl Eva, it doesn't take, it has not taken
- 42:59Speaker 1: anything for me to text you and say, I need
- 43:01Speaker 1: your support.
- 43:02Speaker 2: Of course.
- 43:02Speaker 1: And you're like, boom, boom. I need to find a
- 43:05Speaker 1: place in a safe neighborhood to stay in and put
- 43:08Speaker 1: the boom, boom.
- 43:08Speaker 2: Of course. Always. You know what? I'm here for you
- 43:11Speaker 2: always because I love you and I think you're a
- 43:13Speaker 2: phenomenal human being, lady, mom, everything. Thank you. Like everything.
- 43:17Speaker 1: As are you, amiga.
- 43:18Speaker 2: Te quiero. You are. Thank you. Yay!
