- 1:44Speaker 1: downtown Louisville.
- 1:45Speaker 8: There, see, he had the voice ready to go, so
- 1:48Speaker 8: I thought I'd just pitch it to you. And joining
- 1:50Speaker 8: me this week is.
- 1:52Speaker 1: George Buehler, the WBKI fanatic.
- 1:55Speaker 8: We've crossed over on the internets like a... years ago
- 1:59Speaker 8: maybe a couple years ago it's been a while yeah
- 2:01Speaker 8: let's start the fanatic chat yeah and we're always like
- 2:04Speaker 8: we should just go ahead and sit down and do
- 2:05Speaker 8: a show and finally this week i was like you
- 2:09Speaker 8: know we should just sit down while we're there because
- 2:11Speaker 8: we'll both be there oh.
- 2:12Speaker 1: Yeah i mean i love listening to movie meltdown all
- 2:14Speaker 1: the time to support your you know podcast.
- 2:16Speaker 8: Yes so it's like yeah Much appreciated. Some people out there,
- 2:20Speaker 8: I'm not singling you out, listener, but some people aren't
- 2:22Speaker 8: sharing the way that they should, where George is pretty
- 2:25Speaker 8: awesome about it.
- 2:26Speaker 1: You know what? You got to share, folks. You got to.
- 2:29Speaker 1: Same thing with my folks. They share. It kind of
- 2:31Speaker 1: helps to get the word out.
- 2:32Speaker 8: It's very important. So I appreciate you getting the word
- 2:35Speaker 8: out for us.
- 2:36Speaker 1: That's a great show. I love supporting it.
- 2:38Speaker 8: I appreciate it. So I'd say, how's it been? But
- 2:42Speaker 8: I know it's been pretty awesome.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Oh my god uh this has been a hell of
- 2:45Speaker 1: a show it really has been um i basically did
- 2:48Speaker 1: 10 interviews between friday and saturday all right uh starting
- 2:52Speaker 1: with kevin conroy the voice of batman.
- 2:54Speaker 8: I i it's funny that how many people still reference
- 2:57Speaker 8: it because everybody gets in there who's the best batman
- 3:00Speaker 8: most of the real geeks put him at the top
- 3:02Speaker 8: of the list absolutely even though visually never been in
- 3:05Speaker 8: a movie audio has been the most and awesome Batman ever.
- 3:09Speaker 1: Well, I mean, you gotta think, you know, you had,
- 3:11Speaker 1: you know, it started with the Batman the Animated Series,
- 3:13Speaker 1: then went to the Adventures of Batman and Robin, then
- 3:16Speaker 1: Justice League, then Justice League Unlimited, then Batman Beyond, then
- 3:19Speaker 1: the Brave and the Bold, then the three Arkham series games.
- 3:22Speaker 1: I mean, come on, and the movies. Mask of the Phantasm.
- 3:25Speaker 1: Mask of the Phantasm.
- 3:26Speaker 8: I saw a Phantasm here today. Actually, it was last night.
- 3:28Speaker 1: I was like, that's a great costume.
- 3:30Speaker 9: He was.
- 3:30Speaker 4: He was awesome.
- 3:31Speaker 1: I saw him.
- 3:31Speaker 8: That's a deep cut for, you know, not for geeks,
- 3:34Speaker 8: but for normal people. They wouldn't have no clue who
- 3:36Speaker 8: you are.
- 3:36Speaker 1: So that's cool. I've seen some great costumes. I saw
- 3:39Speaker 1: a girl who was probably under the age of 12.
- 3:42Speaker 1: dressed from hitchhiker's guide for the galaxy she had the
- 3:45Speaker 1: bathrobe she had the towel she had the don't.
- 3:46Speaker 8: Panic damn good for a little kid you know for
- 3:50Speaker 8: it was it blew me away that's pretty impressive i
- 3:53Speaker 8: saw and this is it's funny how because you're seeing
- 3:56Speaker 8: such a generational shift because i remember just a few
- 3:59Speaker 8: years ago i was talking to someone probably early 20s
- 4:04Speaker 8: and they were referencing how awesome space jam was and
- 4:07Speaker 8: i'm like what Okay, everyone I knew when it came
- 4:10Speaker 8: out hated Space Jam. But, like, kids didn't have that. Like,
- 4:13Speaker 8: they didn't bring all this baggage to it from old
- 4:15Speaker 8: school Warner Brothers. So, like, the fact that, like, they
- 4:18Speaker 8: just grew up and it was Bugs Bunny and it
- 4:19Speaker 8: was awesome. And so, like, now they're older and they're
- 4:22Speaker 8: just like, no, that was great. Like, basketball and Bugs?
- 4:24Speaker 8: And I'm like, oh. Oh, wait, okay. It didn't even
- 4:28Speaker 8: occur to you to not like it. So, as I
- 4:30Speaker 8: was in there earlier, there's a girl that's, I don't know,
- 4:32Speaker 8: maybe 13, dressed as Babs.
- 4:35Speaker 10: Oh my gosh.
- 4:35Speaker 8: In the full basketball gear with her ears tied together
- 4:38Speaker 8: in a ponytail. That's impressive. In a rabbit tail. So, yeah,
- 4:41Speaker 8: I was just like, that's cool. And again, like, no
- 4:45Speaker 8: judgment because... You don't know. I mean, again, you're older,
- 4:49Speaker 8: you have a weird take on stuff. But I want
- 4:52Speaker 8: to support kids loving geeky things.
- 4:54Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 4:54Speaker 8: Even if it's Space Jam, I guess, go ahead.
- 4:57Speaker 1: Yeah, because I'm kind of lost in a lot of
- 5:00Speaker 1: the anime stuff. My anime goes back to Akira, Vampire
- 5:03Speaker 1: Hunter D, Fist of the North Star, the stuff.
- 5:05Speaker 4: From the 80s.
- 5:06Speaker 8: I've watched a few of those. I have Vampire Hunter D.
- 5:09Speaker 8: That's about as far as I go.
- 5:10Speaker 1: I'll say I think the most recent anime I saw
- 5:13Speaker 1: was Ninja Scroll, which probably came out in like 95
- 5:16Speaker 1: or 96.
- 5:16Speaker 8: You were right on top of things. Cutting edge of anime.
- 5:20Speaker 1: So basically all the series, you know, the Cowboy Bebop,
- 5:22Speaker 1: the One Piece.
- 5:23Speaker 8: That one's the one I will say is good. I
- 5:25Speaker 8: saw that on Adult Swim enough to go, okay, I
- 5:27Speaker 8: actually like this. Like it's well written. Yeah, so much
- 5:31Speaker 8: of the other stuff I just do not connect with
- 5:33Speaker 8: at all. but yeah cowboy bill it's.
- 5:35Speaker 1: Worth watching so i think it basically i've already watched
- 5:37Speaker 1: enough tv as it is professionally so it's hard to
- 5:40Speaker 1: like i mean people like oh have you watched this
- 5:41Speaker 1: on netflix but no i watch seven hours of cw
- 5:44Speaker 1: television a week.
- 5:46Speaker 8: Thank you that is my every week i go into
- 5:48Speaker 8: like people will be like oh i really love this
- 5:50Speaker 8: series and i'm like i can't start a new series
- 5:52Speaker 8: i can't i spend all week editing this and then
- 5:54Speaker 8: i watch a couple of movies for the show and
- 5:56Speaker 8: that's all i have time to do like there's just
- 5:58Speaker 8: I wish I could just sit at home and watch
- 6:00Speaker 8: TV all day and live, but I can't do that.
- 6:03Speaker 1: I make an exception for wrestling. I watch about eight
- 6:05Speaker 1: hours of wrestling a week.
- 6:06Speaker 8: Thankfully, I didn't get too far into that, which I
- 6:08Speaker 8: will get to later when you get to your connections,
- 6:11Speaker 8: I believe, as we go. But yeah, thankfully, I didn't
- 6:13Speaker 8: go too far down the wrestling road.
- 6:16Speaker 1: I'm in too deep.
- 6:17Speaker 8: I really am I just pick the ones that I
- 6:20Speaker 8: like and I'm like you know The Rock that dude's
- 6:22Speaker 8: awesome so I just I follow him on his movie
- 6:25Speaker 8: career and I anybody that strays over and I'm like
- 6:27Speaker 8: Hulk you made a lot of questionable decisions you stay
- 6:29Speaker 8: over there Rock you're.
- 6:31Speaker 1: Cool come with me so I've got to meet and
- 6:33Speaker 1: be in the presence of a lot of great ones
- 6:35Speaker 1: The Rock has not unfortunately been on my radar.
- 6:37Speaker 8: Yet yes I'm still hoping to have him on the
- 6:40Speaker 8: show so come join us on that episode.
- 6:42Speaker 1: Yeah call me please yeah I have questions.
- 6:46Speaker 8: So, yeah, you just kind of started grazing the guests.
- 6:52Speaker 11: Oh, yes.
- 6:52Speaker 1: So let's see then. After Kevin Conroy, I had the
- 6:56Speaker 1: absolute pleasure of talking with John Wesley Shipp, which he
- 7:00Speaker 1: was my flash.
- 7:02Speaker 8: I will get back to him towards the end of
- 7:04Speaker 8: the episode.
- 7:05Speaker 1: And the really, really cool thing was that he came
- 7:10Speaker 1: to our booth, the CW booth, and interviewed him from there.
- 7:14Speaker 1: He got to meet all of our crew. I got
- 7:17Speaker 1: a couple of station IDs recorded as well, so I
- 7:19Speaker 1: got some editing to do.
- 7:21Speaker 8: I posted that today, actually. I saw that, and I
- 7:23Speaker 8: was just like, He seems so fun.
- 7:26Speaker 12: Oh, my.
- 7:26Speaker 8: And you were so giddy to be talking to him.
- 7:28Speaker 1: Cloud nine.
- 7:29Speaker 8: You can tell how happy you were.
- 7:31Speaker 1: Cloud nine. Oh, my God. I mean, I was able
- 7:36Speaker 1: to hold it together talking to him. And I went
- 7:39Speaker 1: and met Alice Cooper. I didn't get an interview with him.
- 7:41Speaker 1: I wish I would have.
- 7:42Speaker 8: He walked past. I ran into a guy that I
- 7:44Speaker 8: used to work with. And we're standing there. And he's
- 7:46Speaker 8: a big, like, he was there buying, like, his toys. Like,
- 7:49Speaker 8: he's everything of that era he loves. So, like, he's
- 7:51Speaker 8: standing there in the middle of talking.
- 7:52Speaker 1: He goes, dude.
- 7:53Speaker 13: Dude, Alice.
- 7:55Speaker 8: He's walking down the hall to go do whatever Alice
- 7:58Speaker 8: needs to do because he's Alice. And he just goes, hey, Alice,
- 8:01Speaker 8: and sticks his hand out. Without breaking stride, Alice shakes
- 8:04Speaker 8: his hand, keeps on going. I'm just like, dude, you
- 8:07Speaker 8: just shook Alice's hand.
- 8:08Speaker 1: That's pretty awesome.
- 8:09Speaker 8: So he seems pretty cool.
- 8:11Speaker 1: Because he's Alice. He was amazing. Alice is one of
- 8:14Speaker 1: those guys that there's a top five of people I've
- 8:17Speaker 1: always wanted to meet. And I've always been able to
- 8:19Speaker 1: hold it together meeting celebrities and wrestlers, stuff like that.
- 8:22Speaker 1: I can certainly confess with great humility that walking away
- 8:26Speaker 1: after having a wonderful conversation with him, him signing one
- 8:28Speaker 1: of my records, I was fighting back some tears. I've
- 8:32Speaker 1: never had that experience meeting a celebrity, but you know what?
- 8:34Speaker 1: Alice was the great exception.
- 8:36Speaker 8: Alice is a pretty big deal. I just kind of
- 8:39Speaker 8: want to hang out and talk horror movies because I
- 8:41Speaker 8: know the depths of his horror geekery. It's so ridiculous.
- 8:47Speaker 8: He comes here a lot because he's a weirdo that
- 8:48Speaker 8: wants to play golf.
- 8:49Speaker 1: Oh, sure, yeah.
- 8:50Speaker 8: God bless him. Or Satan or whichever.
- 8:53Speaker 1: I would rather have him healthy and playing golf than
- 8:56Speaker 1: how he was in the 80s.
- 8:58Speaker 8: It's just so funny seeing him in his golf attire
- 9:01Speaker 8: and just like, never mind.
- 9:04Speaker 1: But man, he's looking great. He's not slowing down. Yeah,
- 9:08Speaker 1: praise Jeebus.
- 9:09Speaker 8: I saw him the last time he came through here
- 9:12Speaker 8: and they did it at the fair of all things.
- 9:14Speaker 8: And I was just like, was so amazed that like
- 9:17Speaker 8: he ran all over that stage for like well over
- 9:20Speaker 8: two hours like it just went on and i was
- 9:22Speaker 8: like dude i am tired and i'm just sitting here
- 9:25Speaker 8: and i'm not near as an old man as you
- 9:27Speaker 8: are so i'm just like this is amazing that he
- 9:29Speaker 8: is still just all over that stage and like still
- 9:33Speaker 8: doing the crazy props and still beheading himself and all
- 9:36Speaker 8: these things i was just like that is so impressive.
- 9:38Speaker 1: Yeah it was truly glorious and you talk about his
- 9:40Speaker 1: horror movie death so uh tell them the story about
- 9:43Speaker 1: uh watching him on the muppets when i was three
- 9:45Speaker 1: years old So, of course, this dates me.
- 9:49Speaker 8: I'm right there with it. Well, I mean, to me,
- 9:50Speaker 8: that's sort of the criteria. I've got a special group
- 9:52Speaker 8: of people that, like, you know, if you were on
- 9:54Speaker 8: The Muppet Show, makes you kind of cooler than most
- 9:57Speaker 8: other people. So, like, anybody who made an appearance on...
- 10:00Speaker 8: that original Muppet Show, that's pretty impressive.
- 10:02Speaker 1: Yeah. But I just got into Kiss around that time
- 10:05Speaker 1: because Kiss Meets the Phantom Park came out the Halloween.
- 10:08Speaker 1: A classic. I know. Right, right.
- 10:10Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 10:11Speaker 1: Still holds up today.
- 10:12Speaker 8: Just as good as.
- 10:14Speaker 1: It was then.
- 10:15Speaker 3: Maybe.
- 10:15Speaker 14: I don't know.
- 10:16Speaker 15: Wow.
- 10:17Speaker 10: Wow.
- 10:18Speaker 1: Yeah, that's not even Chris's voice in the entire movie either,
- 10:21Speaker 1: by the way. A little fan tip there for you, folks.
- 10:22Speaker 8: I mean, you know. He's not in the band to talk.
- 10:25Speaker 8: It's fine.
- 10:26Speaker 1: No, no, it's fine. But anyway, so he was on
- 10:29Speaker 1: The Muppets. I knew his music, had never seen him
- 10:32Speaker 1: perform before, didn't know what he looked like. So I
- 10:34Speaker 1: see him on The Muppets, scares the ever-loving crap out
- 10:36Speaker 1: of me. Oh, yeah. I can't finish the episode. Don't
- 10:39Speaker 1: touch his music until I'm 12 years old.
- 10:41Speaker 15: All right.
- 10:41Speaker 8: Just at the right time for it to sink its
- 10:43Speaker 8: hook in.
- 10:44Speaker 1: Yeah, and then basically what brought me back was his
- 10:48Speaker 1: He's Back, The Man Behind the Mask, the theme from
- 10:50Speaker 1: Friday the 13th Part 6.
- 10:51Speaker 8: I've worked it into an episode, I believe, one of
- 10:53Speaker 8: the music episodes. I played that one, yeah.
- 10:56Speaker 1: A classic in the Alice lineup there, as far as
- 10:59Speaker 1: I'm concerned. And basically that was kind of my way,
- 11:03Speaker 1: that was a peace offering. And so he said, well,
- 11:05Speaker 1: when doing the Muppets, he wasn't sure about the approach.
- 11:08Speaker 1: He was like, I don't know about it. But he said, well,
- 11:10Speaker 1: whose recent episode people you had on? And they said
- 11:12Speaker 1: the four magic words, Vincent Price, Christopher Lee.
- 11:16Speaker 6: He said, I'm in.
- 11:17Speaker 8: That's all you need. Those guys are epic.
- 11:21Speaker 16: Oh, yeah.
- 11:22Speaker 1: Let's see. What other interviews have I had? I've had
- 11:24Speaker 1: four different wrestler interviews. Kane, Sergeant Slaughter, who put me
- 11:29Speaker 1: in the Cobra Clutch.
- 11:30Speaker 8: You were asking for it. You know it.
- 11:32Speaker 1: I literally did ask for it. He said, I'm going
- 11:33Speaker 1: to put you in the Cobra Clutch. I said, yes, please.
- 11:36Speaker 1: Tapped almost immediately. Yes, master. He was, yeah.
- 11:41Speaker 8: Put on the GIMP suit.
- 11:42Speaker 15: All right.
- 11:42Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. GIMP sleeping. But yeah, he was awesome. Theodore Long,
- 11:49Speaker 1: manager extraordinaire, SmackDown general manager. He was great. Booker T
- 11:54Speaker 1: was not on my list of people. But he was
- 11:56Speaker 1: thrown in. I'm like, yes, please. So he was cool.
- 12:00Speaker 1: Let's see.
- 12:01Speaker 8: I have an interesting tie-in for that. So yesterday, it's
- 12:05Speaker 8: midway into the day. I'm trying to coordinate what I've
- 12:08Speaker 8: got going on. And I'm like... As usual, I've got
- 12:11Speaker 8: prep work in the morning, so I'm running behind and
- 12:13Speaker 8: I'm like, I don't really have time to eat anything.
- 12:15Speaker 8: Kids have a good solid breakfast. Don't follow my example.
- 12:20Speaker 8: But I'm midway and I'm like, okay, I've got about
- 12:22Speaker 8: an hour here before I have to get back over
- 12:24Speaker 8: to do the other things. So let's go get some food.
- 12:26Speaker 1: So it's funny.
- 12:27Speaker 8: We're actually looking out the window at where I went.
- 12:29Speaker 8: So there's a Mexican place that I went across the
- 12:32Speaker 8: street from this convention center. And I'm standing in line
- 12:35Speaker 8: and Again, like, I'm not so into wrestling, so I'm
- 12:38Speaker 8: just standing in front of the counter, and there's a
- 12:41Speaker 8: guy next to me, and I'm like, yeah, he's a
- 12:43Speaker 8: pretty tall guy. And then I'm like, those are some
- 12:47Speaker 8: impressive braids he has, like, kind of bound up into, again,
- 12:50Speaker 8: a big ponytail, and I'm like, alright, alright. And again,
- 12:53Speaker 8: don't pay any attention to it. When we get up
- 12:55Speaker 8: to the register, the girl, there's a girl ringing people up,
- 13:00Speaker 8: and the other girl back in the back is freaking out.
- 13:03Speaker 8: And I'm just like, Okay, I guess he's from across
- 13:06Speaker 8: the street. So what's funny is he, now this is
- 13:10Speaker 8: where he did follow my lead. I'm like, put some
- 13:12Speaker 8: sour cream on that. And he goes, hey, what'd you
- 13:14Speaker 8: put on there? And I was like, oh, sour cream.
- 13:16Speaker 8: He's like, yeah, give me some of that too. That
- 13:18Speaker 8: looks good.
- 13:18Speaker 1: Oh, that's awesome. I influenced his meal. That is amazing.
- 13:23Speaker 8: But what I thought was the most impressive is, once again,
- 13:27Speaker 8: the two levels of people who know and don't know.
- 13:29Speaker 8: Cause the girl at the cash register was like, I
- 13:31Speaker 8: don't know who that is. Why are you bugging me?
- 13:33Speaker 8: And she's just like, she looks over at the girl
- 13:35Speaker 8: who's like freaking out. And she just goes, can she
- 13:39Speaker 8: take a picture with you? And he's like, all right.
- 13:42Speaker 8: So he was totally cool. And it was just like,
- 13:44Speaker 8: come here. And she, the girl was like, my heart
- 13:47Speaker 8: is racing.
- 13:48Speaker 13: Like she was freaking out.
- 13:49Speaker 8: And like, He stood over there and took a picture
- 13:51Speaker 8: with her and she went back and had to go
- 13:53Speaker 8: do her dumb job the whole rest of the day.
- 13:55Speaker 8: But he was totally cool with it and then took
- 13:57Speaker 8: his new sour cream covered meal and went and ate.
- 14:01Speaker 8: I thought for a minute I was hanging out with
- 14:03Speaker 8: Booker T myself.
- 14:05Speaker 1: And you influenced his media?
- 14:06Speaker 8: Yeah, I brought him the wonders of sour cream.
- 14:09Speaker 4: Wow.
- 14:09Speaker 1: I mean, he is royalty too. He was a king
- 14:11Speaker 1: at one point during his career. So there you go.
- 14:15Speaker 1: That's pretty good. You've influenced royalty.
- 14:17Speaker 8: So again, I like that even I fall into that.
- 14:20Speaker 8: So many other people are on the level where, because
- 14:23Speaker 8: I'm so used to seeing celebrities at these, I don't
- 14:25Speaker 8: hang out with them. Most of the time. But I
- 14:27Speaker 8: at least know who everybody is. But wrestler is kind
- 14:30Speaker 8: of a world that I'm like hit and miss on
- 14:31Speaker 8: so many of them. So the fact that I'm standing
- 14:34Speaker 8: right next to him the whole time and I'm like, oh, hey,
- 14:36Speaker 8: how's it going? I had not a clue, really.
- 14:39Speaker 17: Oh, yeah.
- 14:40Speaker 1: According to me, just as we were on our way
- 14:42Speaker 1: to do the show here, we passed by Kane, who I,
- 14:44Speaker 1: of course, got to interview him. I've met him a
- 14:47Speaker 1: couple of times before. Matter of fact, years and years ago,
- 14:50Speaker 1: a show at the old Louisville Gardens here. Yeah. I
- 14:53Speaker 1: worked security there. and got to be his security escort
- 14:55Speaker 1: at the end of the night. So I had to
- 14:56Speaker 1: make sure Kane was safely escorted to his vehicle.
- 14:59Speaker 8: I would hope so. Someone might jump him and beat
- 15:01Speaker 8: him down.
- 15:02Speaker 1: He was perfectly fine. And, of course, this was before
- 15:04Speaker 1: the point he had unmasked. So, I mean, old wrestling
- 15:07Speaker 1: fans knew him as Isaac Yankum DDS, the worst dentist
- 15:11Speaker 1: in all of wrestling.
- 15:12Speaker 10: Oh, Lord.
- 15:13Speaker 1: And then he transitioned to the cage.
- 15:15Speaker 8: You sure that doesn't have a garbage pail, kid?
- 15:18Speaker 1: No, but that's pretty close. There was a garbage man wrestler,
- 15:21Speaker 1: Duke the Dumpster Drozy.
- 15:22Speaker 8: All right, we got that.
- 15:24Speaker 1: Just ask me about some wrestling history. I got you covered, man.
- 15:28Speaker 1: But yeah, so, you know, just had an interview with him,
- 15:31Speaker 1: you know, probably about 24 hours ago as we're walking by.
- 15:33Speaker 1: I said, hey, the cane. And he said my name.
- 15:35Speaker 3: Yep.
- 15:36Speaker 6: George.
- 15:36Speaker 1: I'm like, you know my name.
- 15:39Speaker 8: It's weird when that happens, isn't it?
- 15:40Speaker 1: It really is. It is. That's happened like once before
- 15:43Speaker 1: with a celebrity, but it was like, it was a
- 15:46Speaker 1: local comedian, but still, he was a popular guy, and
- 15:48Speaker 1: I was like, oh, yeah, you know my name too. So, yes,
- 15:50Speaker 1: that's always... That's always a big thrill.
- 15:53Speaker 8: It happened to me once this weekend that, again, I
- 15:55Speaker 8: can go into later. That's awesome. But it was very
- 15:57Speaker 8: weird that, like, during their Q & A, they referenced
- 16:00Speaker 8: me in the audience by name. And I was like,
- 16:03Speaker 8: that was a long time ago. Why do you still? Okay,
- 16:05Speaker 8: never mind. So it's cool when people are just people
- 16:09Speaker 8: and they just have a conversation. That's what I like
- 16:12Speaker 8: is kind of connecting with these people. Absolutely.
- 16:15Speaker 1: My policy is that if I'm walking away from an
- 16:17Speaker 1: interview with somebody, I want them smiling and happy that
- 16:20Speaker 1: I was there talking to them. Yeah, I'll make a
- 16:21Speaker 1: good impression. I'm not going to try to railroad somebody.
- 16:23Speaker 1: 90% of the time, I'm a fan of them already
- 16:27Speaker 1: and know their career probably better than they do.
- 16:31Speaker 8: I've run into that, too. I've referenced movies that people
- 16:33Speaker 8: are like, wait, I was in that?
- 16:36Speaker 1: Oh, never mind, then. Or my other couple interviews I did,
- 16:40Speaker 1: Lauren Lester, the voice of Robin for Batman, the animated series,
- 16:42Speaker 1: and Diane Pershing, who was Poison Ivy. I referenced the
- 16:47Speaker 1: old Defenders of Earth, Flash Gordon, Mandrake, the Phantom series
- 16:51Speaker 1: that both Lauren and Diane were a part of. And
- 16:54Speaker 1: Diane was very impressed that I knew what I was
- 16:55Speaker 1: talking about there. It's Flash Gordon stuff, of course. But yeah,
- 17:00Speaker 1: so that was a great thrill. Getting to talk to
- 17:02Speaker 1: Lauren Lester, apparently I knew his career better than he
- 17:04Speaker 1: did because I was bringing up him doing the voice
- 17:07Speaker 1: for Barbecue in the G.I. Joe show and Rock and
- 17:10Speaker 1: roll high school. And let's see. Oh, and a little
- 17:13Speaker 1: tidbit here. The new kids in the block cartoon. He
- 17:16Speaker 1: was the voice of Jordan Knight.
- 17:18Speaker 8: Jordan can't even do his own voice.
- 17:20Speaker 1: None of the new kids do their own voice.
- 17:21Speaker 8: Come on, Donnie. You're an actor.
- 17:23Speaker 1: Step up.
- 17:27Speaker 8: Oh, I watch Blue Bloods every week like everybody does.
- 17:30Speaker 8: It's fine.
- 17:32Speaker 1: But yeah, I mean, Supercon has really been fantastic out here.
- 17:36Speaker 8: So, here's the thing that I think, because you're referencing
- 17:39Speaker 8: your interviews.
- 17:40Speaker 3: Sure, yeah.
- 17:40Speaker 8: I think you're way more practiced at this part of it.
- 17:44Speaker 8: Because here, this was a very... professionally run i will
- 17:49Speaker 8: say i'm impressed with this this is the first time
- 17:51Speaker 8: they've been to louisville right so this is a really
- 17:53Speaker 8: well put together and just dealing with their again a
- 17:57Speaker 8: big shout out to their best person i've dealt with
- 17:59Speaker 8: all weekend and she's been great.
- 18:00Speaker 1: Sammy yes sammy's been awesome she's.
- 18:02Speaker 8: Been great so like the it's one of the most
- 18:05Speaker 8: impressively run that i've dealt with but it's super busy
- 18:09Speaker 8: they get a lot going on so everything is quick
- 18:13Speaker 8: in and out kind of thing yeah You've heard the
- 18:16Speaker 8: show before. I ramble on for a really long time.
- 18:19Speaker 1: I can do that as well.
- 18:21Speaker 8: But you've got it where you can do your five-minute
- 18:23Speaker 8: interview and get out. I don't ever know how to
- 18:26Speaker 8: approach those. I'm like, by the time I get started,
- 18:28Speaker 8: because it's my go-to now, is like, okay, I want
- 18:31Speaker 8: to start from the beginning. Let's go through your whole life.
- 18:33Speaker 8: And that's hard to do in five minutes.
- 18:35Speaker 3: Sure.
- 18:35Speaker 8: So trying to force myself into the... You'll hear as
- 18:39Speaker 8: we go through our interviews this episode, they're all way
- 18:42Speaker 8: shorter than I'm used to doing.
- 18:43Speaker 11: Mm-hmm.
- 18:44Speaker 8: And some of them will just be like, eh, we're
- 18:46Speaker 8: wrapping up. So as we get started, we're just as
- 18:50Speaker 8: quickly wrapping up. So the first of those I was
- 18:54Speaker 8: going to throw out there, I did talk to Sam Jones,
- 18:58Speaker 8: who is.
- 19:01Speaker 8: Again, this is one that it's kind of hard to
- 19:04Speaker 8: just graze that because... he has a huge story there.
- 19:08Speaker 8: Like there's so much that went on in his life
- 19:11Speaker 8: that I think you could talk for hours and hours
- 19:13Speaker 8: and still just be uncovering more crazy things that happened
- 19:16Speaker 8: to him. So like, yeah, this is, this is just
- 19:19Speaker 8: a bear. It's the tip of the iceberg, but you
- 19:23Speaker 8: do get like, he does kind of much like I expected.
- 19:26Speaker 8: He's somewhere between, uh, drill instructor and a motivational speaker
- 19:31Speaker 8: right like he's just so like again he's he's he's
- 19:34Speaker 8: marine so like he's still got that kind of built
- 19:37Speaker 8: into him yeah that's still there yeah but he's also
- 19:39Speaker 8: very like go out and do something with your life
- 19:41Speaker 8: and like that's pretty impressive so it's kind of fun
- 19:45Speaker 8: listening to him deliver this so I'm gonna let you
- 19:48Speaker 8: guys do that right now I always try to get
- 20:15Speaker 8: at the very beginning and sort of see how people
- 20:17Speaker 8: found their way into the business. So, originally from Chicago?
- 20:21Speaker 18: No, I was born there. They took me away, I think,
- 20:24Speaker 18: four months old. My dad was military. So, I was
- 20:27Speaker 18: born at the Great Lakes Naval Hospital.
- 20:30Speaker 8: Were you, early on, were you, again, which direction did
- 20:34Speaker 8: you go? Did you already get kind of, like, interested
- 20:36Speaker 8: in the military because of that?
- 20:38Speaker 3: Yeah, I think, yeah, my dad was Army. I think
- 20:40Speaker 3: he was only in for eight years.
- 20:42Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 20:43Speaker 3: So I joined the Marine Corps right out of high school.
- 20:47Speaker 3: I was going to be a lifer.
- 20:48Speaker 18: Then I started playing Marine Corps football and I said, oh,
- 20:52Speaker 18: I said, I think I'm pretty good. I think the
- 20:53Speaker 18: NFL needs me. So I finished up in the Corps
- 20:57Speaker 18: and went to Seattle. That's where my grandparents were. 1976.
- 21:03Speaker 18: And tried out.
- 21:06Speaker 3: And they said, no, we don't need you.
- 21:09Speaker 18: I played one year on their practice squad called the
- 21:12Speaker 18: Burien Flyers, and shortly thereafter, I read an article about
- 21:20Speaker 18: Clint Eastwood, and that inspired me to go to Hollywood, 1976.
- 21:25Speaker 3: Well, I think early 77, yeah.
- 21:29Speaker 8: The only thing more reliable than professional sports is, you know, Hollywood,
- 21:33Speaker 8: as far as having a long-term career.
- 21:36Speaker 3: Well, it's not reliable, no.
- 21:37Speaker 12: I know.
- 21:38Speaker 18: I mean, I was just telling that young lady, I
- 21:41Speaker 18: was giving her the statistics that only 3% of every
- 21:44Speaker 18: actor in the world can pay his or her bills
- 21:47Speaker 18: off of movie jobs only.
- 21:49Speaker 3: So what's the other end of that?
- 21:51Speaker 18: That means 97% of every actor or actress has to
- 21:56Speaker 18: have a secondary income to pay their bills.
- 21:59Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 22:00Speaker 8: Did you start off? I mean, again, obviously you had to.
- 22:03Speaker 8: How many jobs did you have going trying to get
- 22:05Speaker 8: the acting?
- 22:05Speaker 3: You know what?
- 22:06Speaker 18: I took that Marine Corps attitude with me. First of all,
- 22:11Speaker 18: you just don't go and try something because, oh, I
- 22:13Speaker 18: want to give it a try. Because if that's your mindset, oh,
- 22:17Speaker 18: I think I want to give it a try, you're
- 22:19Speaker 18: already going into it sort of standard thinking, which to me,
- 22:23Speaker 18: standard thinking is substandard.
- 22:25Speaker 3: It's way below average.
- 22:26Speaker 8: The rest of those percentage.
- 22:28Speaker 18: You got to go into it knowing and believing that
- 22:32Speaker 18: you belong, that you really belong there.
- 22:35Speaker 3: And I believe that that's where I belong. So I didn't,
- 22:39Speaker 3: I wasn't moved.
- 22:39Speaker 18: I had a different, in other words, if I walked
- 22:42Speaker 18: into an audition in the little lobby area with 20
- 22:45Speaker 18: guys that looked like me, I never for one minute thought, oh,
- 22:50Speaker 18: that's my competition.
- 22:51Speaker 3: My mind was, oh.
- 22:54Speaker 18: They either want Sam Jones or they want somebody else.
- 22:56Speaker 18: And I'm, I'm not going to take offense, but I'm
- 22:58Speaker 18: going to go on this, this interview here. And I'm
- 23:01Speaker 18: going to believe that they're going to choose me. And I,
- 23:04Speaker 18: so I never got bothered by, Oh, so-and-so's at the,
- 23:08Speaker 18: at the audition. So-and-so's up for that part, because that's
- 23:11Speaker 18: just all this stuff. The, the outer lane stuff that
- 23:14Speaker 18: just will hinder you. And, and it's a big obstacle
- 23:18Speaker 18: for the path that is set before you. So I've
- 23:21Speaker 18: kind of been, and you know, I think when I
- 23:23Speaker 18: started getting a little bit too good for my own
- 23:26Speaker 18: shoes as the years went on, you start to read.
- 23:30Speaker 1: Your own press.
- 23:31Speaker 18: I mean, if you read how great you are in
- 23:32Speaker 18: a movie, does that mean you're going to read and
- 23:35Speaker 18: believe if they write something negative about you? So I
- 23:38Speaker 18: stopped reading that. And I will say Hollywood, unless you're grounded,
- 23:44Speaker 18: you will get a little bit tainted, you know. So
- 23:47Speaker 18: just keep it real. You know, remember your upbringing. And
- 23:52Speaker 18: you've got to believe that this is where you belong. Otherwise,
- 23:56Speaker 18: you get another career.
- 23:57Speaker 8: You're the other 97%. So then, again, going into Flash,
- 24:03Speaker 8: you seem like you were tailor-made for it, but how
- 24:06Speaker 8: many people were up there fighting for that part?
- 24:09Speaker 3: You know, that's a great question. Dino De Laurentiis' casting
- 24:14Speaker 3: model was different. The actors will go in one door
- 24:18Speaker 3: and leave another door different times. You would never. I'm serious.
- 24:22Speaker 18: Now, some of the leading ladies you'd see there, but
- 24:25Speaker 18: the men you'd never see. I mean, they told me
- 24:28Speaker 18: years later it was Kurt Russell, who I'm a big
- 24:30Speaker 18: fan of. And then Arnold Schwarzenegger was there, too.
- 24:34Speaker 3: But yeah.
- 24:36Speaker 18: But Kurt, have you seen Kurt in the latest movie?
- 24:38Speaker 18: He's incredible at Santa Claus. That guy's freaking talented, man.
- 24:43Speaker 8: Everything, even the Guardians of the Galaxy. Like, he continues
- 24:46Speaker 8: to find new career paths, yeah. So then, I mean,
- 24:50Speaker 8: you get in there, like, how overwhelming is that? Like,
- 24:53Speaker 8: I guess you were at least familiar with the character,
- 24:55Speaker 8: but that's a pretty huge universe to kind of take
- 24:57Speaker 8: under your shoulder.
- 24:59Speaker 18: Yeah, you know, it was such a long audition process.
- 25:02Speaker 18: I mean, it went on for many, many months. And
- 25:04Speaker 18: then finally they.
- 25:05Speaker 3: Flew me to England, and we didn't have video in 79.
- 25:09Speaker 3: It was all film. So you did the old-fashioned Hollywood
- 25:15Speaker 3: screen test.
- 25:17Speaker 18: And then, you know, 30 days of that, I finally,
- 25:20Speaker 18: and then maybe seven months before that of meetings, they
- 25:23Speaker 18: finally said, okay, you're the guy.
- 25:24Speaker 3: And I just thought I was so relieved. I said, great,
- 25:27Speaker 3: let's do it.
- 25:28Speaker 18: It wasn't really, and that was kind of sad because
- 25:31Speaker 18: there really wasn't any celebratory type moment. It was more
- 25:37Speaker 18: just tension and, Now the tension's relieved. Now there's more
- 25:40Speaker 18: tension because we're going to be shooting in three days.
- 25:44Speaker 8: So straight to the set then.
- 25:45Speaker 3: Yeah, right.
- 25:46Speaker 8: Well, those, again, I was just re-watching it this week.
- 25:48Speaker 8: Those sets are kind of amazing. Like, what is it
- 25:51Speaker 8: like being in the middle of that?
- 25:52Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 25:53Speaker 3: Oh, I loved it.
- 25:53Speaker 18: But I had to block that out because I knew
- 25:56Speaker 18: that I had to because it was overwhelming. My first
- 25:59Speaker 18: lead role, all these incredible, iconic actors, and I started
- 26:04Speaker 18: looking at the sets and it was overwhelming. So I
- 26:07Speaker 18: heard that voice of reason say stop it don't worry
- 26:10Speaker 18: about this now don't even enjoy that stuff now because
- 26:14Speaker 18: all that's going to do is take you away from
- 26:17Speaker 18: your task at hand so i immediately started to focus
- 26:20Speaker 18: on what is requested of me at this very moment
- 26:25Speaker 18: and that's what i did that's how i how i did.
- 26:27Speaker 8: It um well then the i mean The TED revival, like,
- 26:32Speaker 8: could you have ever seen that coming and what people's
- 26:35Speaker 8: response would be to convening?
- 26:36Speaker 18: Well, again, you know, in my older years now, which
- 26:39Speaker 18: is incredible, I mean, I love this time in my life.
- 26:42Speaker 18: And it's actually, you hear people say when they get
- 26:45Speaker 18: older it's getting better. Well, it really is because now
- 26:47Speaker 18: I'm getting phone calls.
- 26:49Speaker 3: I mean, I'm more mature.
- 26:50Speaker 18: I don't take offense like I used to. So I'm
- 26:53Speaker 18: getting these calls now from decision makers who were once
- 26:57Speaker 18: 8-year-old kids, Seth McFarlane. I got a call from him
- 27:02Speaker 18: 8 years ago saying, Hey, when I was 8 years old, Sam,
- 27:06Speaker 18: I saw your movie. It changed my life. I'm directing
- 27:09Speaker 18: my first movie.
- 27:10Speaker 3: Do you want to come on board? Boom. So that's
- 27:13Speaker 3: what's happening now. It's wonderful.
- 27:15Speaker 8: And the nerd fight. It might break out here, you know.
- 27:17Speaker 2: Flash!
- 27:19Speaker 7: Oh! Master of the Universe!
- 27:31Speaker 9: Flash! King of the Impossible!
- 27:40Speaker 1: Just a man with a man.
- 27:43Speaker 8: Knowing that this event was coming up, I did just
- 27:46Speaker 8: re-watch Flash Gordon.
- 27:48Speaker 1: Of course. A classic, in my opinion.
- 27:50Speaker 8: And insane like I it's one of those like I
- 27:53Speaker 8: remember it but it's been a long time since I
- 27:56Speaker 8: sat down and watched it and I'm just like this
- 27:59Speaker 8: got made. Like, it's so crazy.
- 28:02Speaker 1: It is Italian. It is colorful. It is ridiculous. But
- 28:06Speaker 1: it is Flash Gordon.
- 28:08Speaker 8: It looks amazing. Like, those sets. I love those practical sets. Like,
- 28:12Speaker 8: you know they're not standing in front of a green screen.
- 28:14Speaker 15: Oh, yeah.
- 28:14Speaker 8: Someone built all these sets and painted that backdrop. And, like,
- 28:17Speaker 8: everything is just, like, amazing that someone physically.
- 28:20Speaker 1: Did all that.
- 28:21Speaker 8: But also, like, I'm watching it going, like, it's, like,
- 28:24Speaker 8: a page and a half of plot. Like, it's all just...
- 28:28Speaker 8: exposition and like it just goes on from there like
- 28:31Speaker 8: but there's very little that like has to happen it's
- 28:34Speaker 8: all just kind of like and now we hang out
- 28:35Speaker 8: over here for a while and then they get in
- 28:37Speaker 8: a fight and then we go over here and we're
- 28:38Speaker 8: gonna have an uprising and then that's the end of
- 28:41Speaker 8: the movie like but I'm like it's so minimal and
- 28:44Speaker 8: what's set up it's such a strange structure for a film.
- 28:47Speaker 1: I don't know I mean those days though I mean
- 28:49Speaker 1: the Flash Gordon stuff I mean it kept to kind
- 28:51Speaker 1: of the simple serials I mean basically it's like you
- 28:53Speaker 1: know Ming wants to blow up Earth Flash has to
- 28:56Speaker 1: stop him Go. That's your movie.
- 29:00Speaker 3: What else do you need?
- 29:01Speaker 8: Let's talk about that Ming performance, too.
- 29:03Speaker 1: Oh, come on.
- 29:04Speaker 8: The makeup is so, like, I'm kind of like, okay, yeah,
- 29:06Speaker 8: I mean, I hear it in the voice more than anything,
- 29:08Speaker 8: but I'm like, you almost can't even make out that
- 29:10Speaker 8: it's him because they did such a good job on
- 29:13Speaker 8: that weird Ming makeup that I'm just like, he's so
- 29:15Speaker 8: creepy and he's the ultimate villain.
- 29:18Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 29:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 29:19Speaker 1: It's very similar. I saw a recent documentary about the
- 29:22Speaker 1: whole He-Man, Master Universe stuff, and they were talking about
- 29:25Speaker 1: Frank Langella, who played Skeletor in the Master Universe movie.
- 29:28Speaker 8: Another genius performance.
- 29:29Speaker 1: Which he absolutely loved that role.
- 29:31Speaker 10: Oh, yeah.
- 29:32Speaker 1: He got into it because his son was into Master
- 29:35Speaker 1: Universe stuff, and he just went for it, and he
- 29:38Speaker 1: is the best thing about that movie, hands down.
- 29:40Speaker 8: That is one of those. I mean, you can just
- 29:42Speaker 8: feel him having fun inside that suit. It comes through.
- 29:45Speaker 8: And there's a lot of other issues with that movie.
- 29:47Speaker 8: But I'm like, none of it's Frank Langella. He is
- 29:50Speaker 8: swinging for the fences.
- 29:51Speaker 1: I think Max von Sydow had basically the same kind
- 29:54Speaker 1: of feel to that. He had fun in that role. Definitely. Definitely.
- 29:57Speaker 8: I kind of wanted more of him. I'm like, he's
- 29:58Speaker 8: really not in it as much as you would expect
- 30:00Speaker 8: him to be.
- 30:01Speaker 1: I know. And of course they do the whole kind of,
- 30:03Speaker 1: you know, the end question mark. And it's like, we
- 30:05Speaker 1: never got a sequel. I'm like, what is up with that?
- 30:08Speaker 8: Another one of those movies that didn't quite deliver the
- 30:10Speaker 8: way I think the studio had planned. I think they
- 30:13Speaker 8: wanted that to be the.
- 30:14Speaker 1: Next Star Wars.
- 30:15Speaker 11: Oh, yeah.
- 30:16Speaker 8: And it wasn't Star Wars. People that love Star Wars
- 30:18Speaker 8: showed up for that and were like, wait, what is
- 30:20Speaker 8: going on here?
- 30:21Speaker 1: I'm a lifelong devotee of Star Wars and I love
- 30:25Speaker 1: Mason Flash Gordon.
- 30:25Speaker 10: Oh, yeah.
- 30:26Speaker 1: I watch it at least once a year.
- 30:27Speaker 8: But it's a very different mode. Like, it's just two
- 30:29Speaker 8: different universes.
- 30:31Speaker 1: So, like. Well, basically, Flash Gordon could be like if
- 30:33Speaker 1: Star Wars took a lot of acid and then drank
- 30:35Speaker 1: some slow gin fizz or something. I don't know, whatever.
- 30:38Speaker 8: I think any of those bars that hang out in
- 30:40Speaker 8: Star Wars, you go to the cantina, you can get
- 30:43Speaker 8: hooked up. You'll get some death sticks and some sort
- 30:45Speaker 8: of acid-type thing. You'll be fine.
- 30:47Speaker 1: Oh, sure, yeah. I've got a short list of movies
- 30:50Speaker 1: I grew up with that I watch on a regular
- 30:52Speaker 1: basis and absolutely loved the day I die, and Flash
- 30:55Speaker 1: is definitely one of those movies.
- 30:56Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 30:57Speaker 8: Well, one of the other ones I've been... Hoping I
- 31:01Speaker 8: could make this happen for years and didn't really expect
- 31:03Speaker 8: to because this guest hasn't been doing shows anymore that
- 31:07Speaker 8: I've seen. So when they added Riku Browning, I was like, okay, well,
- 31:12Speaker 8: first of all, I'm bringing my post because we had
- 31:15Speaker 8: Julie Adams on years ago. I have a creature mini
- 31:18Speaker 8: poster signed by Julie. And I'm like, if I can
- 31:20Speaker 8: get the creature also on there, like that's amazing. So
- 31:25Speaker 8: luckily also got to sit down. This is one of
- 31:29Speaker 8: those that very quickly I could tell, I'm like, I
- 31:32Speaker 8: need to be done. I need to wrap this up.
- 31:35Speaker 1: Sure, yeah.
- 31:35Speaker 8: And I'm like, he's very nice. You'll hear it in
- 31:38Speaker 8: the interview. But I start, again, I know he's done
- 31:42Speaker 8: a lot of other things that he's equally as proud
- 31:43Speaker 8: of because everybody wants to kind of, everybody loves the
- 31:46Speaker 8: Universal Monsters. So they all kind of like jump on
- 31:48Speaker 8: that and want to talk about the creature. Rightfully so.
- 31:50Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah.
- 31:51Speaker 8: But he had a whole career. He did a lot
- 31:53Speaker 8: of other stuff. So I know sometimes he probably gets overloaded.
- 31:56Speaker 1: I'm sure, yeah.
- 31:57Speaker 8: But I start delving into other, I'm like, let's talk
- 31:59Speaker 8: about Thunderball. Let's talk about this other crazy movie that
- 32:01Speaker 8: you made.
- 32:02Speaker 1: Right, yeah.
- 32:03Speaker 8: I think he's, he's like 88. Like, I think he's
- 32:06Speaker 8: just tired.
- 32:08Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 32:08Speaker 8: So I, by the time I left, I was just like,
- 32:10Speaker 8: thank you just for coming out, man. This is great.
- 32:12Speaker 8: So the fact that I get to sit down and
- 32:14Speaker 8: talk to him is amazing. So, yeah.
- 32:16Speaker 1: It really is, yeah.
- 32:17Speaker 8: It wraps up quickly, but I'm glad to talk to him.
- 32:19Speaker 1: While the city was asleep, the arse was back in.
- 32:24Speaker 10: Maidan.
- 32:24Speaker 7: It was blood from And taken.
- 32:30Speaker 10: Away to a home.
- 32:32Speaker 9: Down under The borders of an open bay.
- 32:36Speaker 19: By the creature from the Black Lagoon A strange to see.
- 32:42Speaker 7: Him act so soon That there is nothing can We'll
- 32:47Speaker 7: be right back.
- 33:10Speaker 8: I'm always kind of fascinated by people that end up
- 33:13Speaker 8: in the movie business and didn't really start that way.
- 33:16Speaker 8: So with you, I mean, you grew up in Florida
- 33:18Speaker 8: and then were involved in scuba diving. How early on
- 33:21Speaker 8: did you kind of get involved in just scuba diving
- 33:24Speaker 8: in general?
- 33:26Speaker 15: I was a lifeguard at Wakulla Spring here in Tallahassee, Florida.
- 33:32Speaker 15: And the general manager taught us all how to hose breathe.
- 33:36Speaker 15: So in the movie, I hose breathed, and I didn't
- 33:40Speaker 15: have to learn anything. I already did it. And the
- 33:43Speaker 15: way I swim underwater is the way the creature swam,
- 33:49Speaker 15: so I didn't have to learn anything. And it was
- 33:53Speaker 15: a very enjoyable show.
- 33:54Speaker 8: Well, then, I mean, as you got into, once they
- 33:58Speaker 8: started doing the creature, was there a specific reason why
- 34:00Speaker 8: they wanted to break it up into two? Because they
- 34:02Speaker 8: obviously needed you for the swimming, but why did they
- 34:04Speaker 8: want someone else on the land version?
- 34:06Speaker 15: They wanted the creature to look big. And I was
- 34:10Speaker 15: six feet at the time. And the actors they used
- 34:14Speaker 15: topside were 6'4, 6'5. And Tom Hennessey was in the
- 34:21Speaker 15: second film. Ben Chapman was in the first film. And
- 34:25Speaker 15: Don McGowan was in the third film.
- 34:28Speaker 8: I mean, how difficult was it sort of trying to
- 34:31Speaker 8: get yourself down there? Because I know I've seen you
- 34:33Speaker 8: had weights in the suit just to keep yourself because
- 34:36Speaker 8: it was so buoyant. So between working with the weighted
- 34:39Speaker 8: suit and then having to breathe through the hose, how
- 34:41Speaker 8: much coordination for each shot did you have to do?
- 34:45Speaker 1: Quite a bit.
- 34:48Speaker 15: Funny story was I was underwater and the water temperature
- 34:53Speaker 15: was 71 degrees. And at that time of the year,
- 34:57Speaker 15: the topside temperature was 49. So it was pretty chilly.
- 35:04Speaker 15: So when I came out of the water, I take
- 35:07Speaker 15: the head off, and I got pretty chilly because we
- 35:11Speaker 15: sat out on a barge. And members of the crew
- 35:15Speaker 15: felt sorry for me, so they asked me if I
- 35:18Speaker 15: wanted a little shot of brandy.
- 35:20Speaker 8: I said, sure.
- 35:22Speaker 15: Well, each crew member didn't know that The other one
- 35:25Speaker 15: had given me brandy, so they had a drunk creature
- 35:29Speaker 15: for a while.
- 35:30Speaker 3: Anyway.
- 35:31Speaker 8: Swimming all over the place, weaving back and forth.
- 35:34Speaker 15: Yeah, right.
- 35:36Speaker 8: Well, some of the other stuff, again, I know you
- 35:38Speaker 8: get so much attention for the creature, but the fact
- 35:40Speaker 8: that you coordinated underwater for Thunderball is kind of amazing.
- 35:44Speaker 8: That was a lot of people. How do you get
- 35:46Speaker 8: that many people coordinated to do some underwater shot?
- 35:50Speaker 15: Well, we hired.
- 35:52Speaker 15: I guess, all of the scuba clubs in Florida to
- 35:57Speaker 15: send divers over. And we had to train them to
- 36:01Speaker 15: swim like we wanted them to for the film. And
- 36:06Speaker 15: at first, it was a little awkward. But after a
- 36:09Speaker 15: bunch of rehearsals, it worked out very well.
- 36:13Speaker 8: That's a lot of people to coordinate. So you do
- 36:15Speaker 8: a lot of planning topside beforehand.
- 36:17Speaker 15: Yeah, we worked on a barge. And we rehearsed the
- 36:21Speaker 15: scenes before we we'd go down. And if it went well,
- 36:25Speaker 15: we'd continue. If it didn't, we'd come back up, rehearse
- 36:30Speaker 15: it again on the barge, and try again.
- 36:35Speaker 8: I was looking at some of the other stuff, too,
- 36:37Speaker 8: like Hello Down There. It seems like a crazy concept
- 36:40Speaker 8: that they, to get Greenlit to make a movie, so
- 36:43Speaker 8: you got the underwater scenes on that one, right?
- 36:46Speaker 15: Yeah, I had worked with Jack Arnold on a number
- 36:48Speaker 15: of shows, and he said, just go over to Nassau
- 36:53Speaker 15: shoot your thing and uh richard dreyfus i think he's
- 36:57Speaker 15: at the show uh sang for the first time and
- 37:05Speaker 15: and i'm i met with him the last show i
- 37:07Speaker 15: was at and i said how did you like the
- 37:10Speaker 15: sharks he says no how do you like the sharks
- 37:14Speaker 15: i said a lot of fun.
- 37:37Speaker 1: For me, when I'm interviewing somebody, I want to celebrate
- 37:39Speaker 1: their entire catalog, not just like the one main reason
- 37:41Speaker 1: they're there. And I think they appreciate that when you
- 37:43Speaker 1: bring up the other stuff they've done and appreciate that
- 37:45Speaker 1: as well. Because if I had the moment to talk
- 37:48Speaker 1: to Sam Jones, I would most certainly bring up The Highwayman. Oh, yeah.
- 37:52Speaker 8: I kind of wanted to and knew I wasn't going
- 37:53Speaker 8: to have time.
- 37:55Speaker 1: Because that was just such a really fun series. It
- 37:58Speaker 1: only lasted a season. I mean, come on, have the
- 38:00Speaker 1: guy from the Energizer battery commercials, Jocko, in it. I
- 38:03Speaker 1: had no idea what other kind of acting credentials he
- 38:06Speaker 1: had back then, aside from the Energizer commercials. But here
- 38:08Speaker 1: he is playing second fiddle to Sam Jones.
- 38:10Speaker 8: Well, Riku, that's the thing. He did so many other things.
- 38:14Speaker 8: And the one I just brought up there... hello down there. Okay,
- 38:18Speaker 8: he's the director of underwater sequences. But look at the cat. This,
- 38:21Speaker 8: first of all, is a movie where it's them doing
- 38:25Speaker 8: this test idea of like, okay, we're going to build
- 38:27Speaker 8: a house, only it's going to be on the bottom
- 38:29Speaker 8: of the ocean. So like, it's going to be underwater,
- 38:31Speaker 8: this entire little, it's sort of like Biodome before Biodome.
- 38:35Speaker 1: Right.
- 38:36Speaker 8: But basically, they want to take a family down there
- 38:38Speaker 8: and do like a test run on it. So your
- 38:40Speaker 8: cast in this is Tony Randall, Janet Leigh, Roddy McDowell,
- 38:44Speaker 8: Jim Backus. A young Richard Dreyfuss is in the rock
- 38:47Speaker 8: band that happens to play. So Richard Dreyfuss, also here
- 38:50Speaker 8: this weekend, by the way, is playing bass or something
- 38:53Speaker 8: in the band that happens to be down there. Again,
- 38:56Speaker 8: it's in the sort of late 60s, very hip band
- 38:59Speaker 8: hanging out. You can tell they're trying to jump on
- 39:01Speaker 8: that groovy bandwagon that was going on of movies being
- 39:04Speaker 8: made at that point.
- 39:05Speaker 11: Uh-huh.
- 39:05Speaker 8: But yeah the fact that you've got like tony randall
- 39:07Speaker 8: and janet lee are the lead the family that you
- 39:10Speaker 8: know the head of family that gets sent down i'm
- 39:12Speaker 8: just like.
- 39:13Speaker 13: How did this come to be and then you're doing
- 39:17Speaker 13: underwater sequences so like i i wanted to talk about
- 39:20Speaker 13: that for hours um there's also some movies he wrote
- 39:23Speaker 13: there's one that he directed.
- 39:24Speaker 8: That i'm i don't even think i'm going to name
- 39:26Speaker 8: it yet because I feel like we're probably going to
- 39:28Speaker 8: come back to it. But the fact that he went
- 39:30Speaker 8: into directing film and writing, I mean, he created flipper essentially.
- 39:34Speaker 8: Like he's one of the original writers of the first
- 39:36Speaker 8: flipper movie. I then went on to produce the TV
- 39:39Speaker 8: show and wrote for the show. And I'm just like, Oh,
- 39:42Speaker 8: these things. I'm like, I, there's so much more I
- 39:45Speaker 8: want to talk to you about. But again, He's tired.
- 39:47Speaker 8: He doesn't want me asking him crazy questions.
- 39:49Speaker 3: Sure, yeah.
- 39:49Speaker 8: So I just was thankful he came out and was
- 39:52Speaker 8: part of the show because, yeah, that was awesome.
- 39:54Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, for me, I mean, all my interviews
- 39:56Speaker 1: mostly are on Facebook. And so I was like, well,
- 39:58Speaker 1: you know, I'm just sitting there watching. I was like, yeah,
- 39:59Speaker 1: let's try to keep it a couple of minutes.
- 40:00Speaker 3: Why not?
- 40:01Speaker 1: So John Wesley Shipp, I probably went close to 10
- 40:03Speaker 1: minutes on. Lauren Lester actually went on with him quite
- 40:06Speaker 1: a while, too. I mean, he's got such a career
- 40:08Speaker 1: that I have, you know, things I love. So it's
- 40:09Speaker 1: like those are the two I think I had the
- 40:10Speaker 1: most time talking with. Yeah.
- 40:18Speaker 2: Yes, folks, it's intermission time. So how about taking a break?
- 40:22Speaker 2: Get out and stretch a little and relax before the
- 40:25Speaker 2: show begins again. And why not make it refreshment time, too?
- 40:29Speaker 2: We have lots of tasty, delicious treats waiting for you
- 40:33Speaker 2: at the refreshment center. There's hot popcorn, so golden good

- 40:46Speaker 4: Ice cream so smooth.
- 40:47Speaker 2: And delicious, you'll hanker for more. Plus, all the most

- 41:47Speaker 15: Tell them you want them.
- 41:48Speaker 8: Coming to your city. Exactly. All the cities.
- 41:51Speaker 6: All the cities.
- 41:51Speaker 8: Then we can go to all the shows. Not all
- 41:53Speaker 8: the shows, because some of them are just too far away. Well,
- 41:55Speaker 8: they're going to get us a Learjet. Some of the shows.
- 41:58Speaker 8: They're going to get us a Learjet. The Meltdown machine.
- 42:01Speaker 8: We've got the band version, so now we're going to

- 42:16Speaker 8: By the way, is that too much to ask?

- 42:21Speaker 10: $ 1.
- 42:21Speaker 2: 50.

- 42:39Speaker 8: We take care of our club members. We might even

- 42:48Speaker 8: would be nice if people would support the show. Because
- 42:51Speaker 8: I can't do this going in the hole, people. Somebody's

- 44:15Speaker 12: Actually, now that you mention it, I'm drinking some fine
- 44:17Speaker 12: coffee here, but I feel like enjoying a nice hot
- 44:21Speaker 12: cup from my local Heine Brothers might actually be an
- 44:23Speaker 12: even better idea.
- 44:24Speaker 8: Well, really, you don't even have to leave the house.
- 44:26Speaker 8: You could just have it ordered right to your doorstep.
- 44:30Speaker 1: Really?

- 44:44Speaker 12: over this table with this substandard coffee.
- 44:46Speaker 8: There right there yeah yeah you.
- 44:48Speaker 12: And then and then uh and then uh let's run
- 44:51Speaker 12: out jump in the car and then screech sound effect

- 46:08Speaker 7: It's part of your problem, you know, you haven't seen
- 46:24Speaker 7: enough movies.
- 46:25Speaker 2: All of life's riddles are answered in the movies.
- 46:30Speaker 4: And now, on with the show.
- 47:08Speaker 8: I mean, the next one is, again, one of those
- 47:12Speaker 8: that was in a monumental film in my life. And
- 47:16Speaker 8: I also have heard many stories about her over the
- 47:19Speaker 8: years that I was like, oh, this could be interesting.
- 47:21Speaker 8: So when I got signed on to talk to Patricia Quinn... Ooh,
- 47:25Speaker 8: there you go. I'm just like, I, again... If you're
- 47:28Speaker 8: old school here, I hung out at the Vogue Theater
- 47:31Speaker 8: pretty much weekly at the Rocky show. And I was
- 47:36Speaker 8: so attached to that movie and then the idea of
- 47:38Speaker 8: what that movie became and the interaction and all of
- 47:42Speaker 8: the crazy story that went on about this thing over
- 47:45Speaker 8: the years. So I'd also heard, again, we were discussing
- 47:51Speaker 8: that as we were kind of waiting. One of the
- 47:53Speaker 8: people just waiting in line to get it autographed. They
- 47:57Speaker 8: like started talking to us and we're just like, you know,
- 47:59Speaker 8: if she was normal, I'd be disappointed. I want eccentric.
- 48:03Speaker 8: I want a little crazy. She does not disappoint. She
- 48:08Speaker 8: is so fun and just so exactly what you would
- 48:12Speaker 8: expect the, the real world magenta to be great. And
- 48:16Speaker 8: then again, I knew I was going to be right
- 48:18Speaker 8: at like short on time. So I was like, all right,
- 48:21Speaker 8: I'm going to, I'm going to talk about Rocky. Cause
- 48:23Speaker 8: that's what I guess you have to talk about.
- 48:24Speaker 15: Sure.
- 48:24Speaker 8: But, uh, I'm right at the end of wrapping up
- 48:26Speaker 8: and I'm like, okay, I'm going to throw the other
- 48:28Speaker 8: one in that I wanted to at least mention. You'll
- 48:31Speaker 8: hear her response to it. You're one of the few
- 48:57Speaker 8: that was originally from the play. I guess what was
- 49:00Speaker 8: the first time you heard about the play version of
- 49:03Speaker 8: Rocky Horror?
- 49:04Speaker 22: My agent told me they were making a play for
- 49:07Speaker 22: three weeks upstairs at the Royal Court, and you had
- 49:11Speaker 22: to sing a rock and roll song and go and audition.
- 49:15Speaker 22: And I said, what's it called? I'd forgotten even if
- 49:18Speaker 22: it had the name then, because it was going to
- 49:19Speaker 22: be Rocky Horror. to be They Came from Denton High.
- 49:21Speaker 22: He didn't call it that then. Anyway, Jim Sharman, who
- 49:25Speaker 22: directed Jesus Christ Superstar, went to the Royal Court and
- 49:30Speaker 22: directed the first Sam Shepard play there, and he said
- 49:34Speaker 22: to them, I have this little musical, because it was
- 49:36Speaker 22: Richard O'Brien who was playing Herod, in Jesus Christ. He
- 49:41Speaker 22: said to Sharman, because he got the sack, because he
- 49:45Speaker 22: was no good as Herod, and he said to Sharman,
- 49:49Speaker 22: I got this little musical, would.
- 49:50Speaker 14: You be interested? He said, yeah, I'm interested.
- 49:55Speaker 22: And Jim Sharman, I didn't say genius lightly, but his
- 49:59Speaker 22: words come, and he can do it. So without him,
- 50:04Speaker 22: without all of them, we were an amazing melting pot
- 50:07Speaker 22: of talent.
- 50:08Speaker 14: Amazing.
- 50:10Speaker 22: From designer to dress designer to writer to us, actors.
- 50:17Speaker 22: We were wonderful, even though I said it myself. And
- 50:21Speaker 22: it was written while we were rehearsing. It wasn't written overnight.
- 50:26Speaker 22: And Julie Covington, who was one of the top singers,
- 50:29Speaker 22: she was the first one to sing Evita on record.
- 50:32Speaker 22: They wanted her to play it, but she turned it down.
- 50:34Speaker 22: She was always clever like that. Anyway, and they thought,
- 50:40Speaker 22: get her a song because she can sing. So they
- 50:43Speaker 22: came in overnight with Touchy, Touchy, Trash Me, I Want
- 50:46Speaker 22: to Be Dirty, and she said, that's filthy, I'm not
- 50:49Speaker 22: singing that. We all agreed with her. Ugh, dirty song. Anyway,
- 50:54Speaker 22: she sang it. And the answer is, I auditioned. Little
- 50:59Speaker 22: Nell says she slept with the director, but I honestly didn't.
- 51:03Speaker 8: That does sound like something she would say.
- 51:06Speaker 15: Yes, quite.
- 51:07Speaker 8: Was the charrette already in play at that point? Like
- 51:11Speaker 8: you started off doing that song from the very beginning?
- 51:14Speaker 22: That's the only reason I took the part, was I
- 51:17Speaker 22: couldn't sing a rock and roll song. I could sing
- 51:20Speaker 22: Maria from West Side Story, but I wasn't a rocker.
- 51:23Speaker 22: So I went in and sang a 1930s song, and
- 51:26Speaker 22: they looked at me a little oddly, of course. They said,
- 51:30Speaker 22: have you got the sheet music?
- 51:31Speaker 14: I said, the what's?
- 51:33Speaker 22: I said, oh, no, the music's in my head. I said,
- 51:36Speaker 22: the piano puts me off. They thought we got a
- 51:38Speaker 22: right one here, right? And then O'Brien said to me,
- 51:42Speaker 22: if I play this to you on the guitar, do
- 51:44Speaker 22: you think you could sing along?
- 51:45Speaker 14: I said, I don't know. And he went.
- 51:48Speaker 22: I thought, oh.
- 51:56Speaker 3: I did.
- 51:56Speaker 22: And then he started to sing it. Michael Rennie was
- 52:01Speaker 22: ill the day... I went jumping down the King's Road,
- 52:07Speaker 22: and that was the only place to be in those 70s.
- 52:10Speaker 22: And I thought, that's fantastic. I'm doing this. And the
- 52:16Speaker 22: amazing thing was that my 1930s song was perfect for
- 52:21Speaker 22: the usherette to sing that song, you see.
- 52:24Speaker 14: So it worked.
- 52:26Speaker 22: So I went home half an hour later and said,
- 52:28Speaker 22: we want you to do it. My agent said, no, no, no,
- 52:31Speaker 22: you haven't read the script. It might only be four
- 52:34Speaker 22: lines or something. He said, don't care. Heard the song.
- 52:38Speaker 22: He said, get the script.
- 52:40Speaker 14: Go pick it up.
- 52:42Speaker 22: Four lines was in the script of someone called Magenta.
- 52:46Speaker 22: I had no interest in her at all because four lines,
- 52:49Speaker 22: she wasn't anything. But I wanted to sing that song.
- 52:55Speaker 22: So that's the only reason I did it. And then,
- 53:01Speaker 22: after three weeks, I'd had enough and I wanted to leave,
- 53:04Speaker 22: and they said Mick Jagger's queuing up the last night
- 53:07Speaker 22: with Bianca and Elliot Gould, we've.
- 53:10Speaker 14: Got David Bowie, we've got Princess.
- 53:11Speaker 22: Margaret, all word of mouth walking in.
- 53:16Speaker 14: Unbelievable.
- 53:18Speaker 22: Queuing in the street because there's a little theatre upstairs. Okay,
- 53:22Speaker 22: so we go. I said, I can't stay. It's 18
- 53:26Speaker 22: quid a week. I give that to my nanny. I
- 53:28Speaker 22: want out of here. And I got things to do,
- 53:30Speaker 22: like Lady Macbeth and stuff.
- 53:32Speaker 14: You know what I mean?
- 53:33Speaker 22: And so they said, please stay, please. Another two weeks, please.
- 53:38Speaker 22: And then they moved it. They kept moving it into cinemas.
- 53:41Speaker 22: We kept changing cinemas into theatres.
- 53:43Speaker 14: Most peculiar.
- 53:45Speaker 22: Down the King's Road. And then I was offered The
- 53:48Speaker 22: Suffragettes by the BBC, by Verity Lambert, who invented Doctor.
- 53:53Speaker 14: Who, actually. She was the producer of the first Doctor Who.
- 53:57Speaker 14: It was her show.
- 53:59Speaker 22: And she gave me Christabel Pankhurst, which is a massive
- 54:03Speaker 22: big series for television. I said, well, I'm doing Rocky
- 54:07Speaker 22: Horror on the King's Road at the moment.
- 54:08Speaker 14: She said, we'll.
- 54:09Speaker 22: Come and see you. So the suits from the BBC
- 54:13Speaker 22: come to Rocky Horror. And they suddenly said to me,
- 54:17Speaker 22: there's no dressing room, so they met me in the
- 54:19Speaker 22: foyer and they said, these are for you. And it
- 54:22Speaker 22: was the scripts for the eight episodes. And I said,
- 54:25Speaker 22: thank you. And I thought, I don't know if I
- 54:27Speaker 22: want to do that because I haven't read these. I
- 54:31Speaker 22: was a bit presumptuous of them.
- 54:33Speaker 14: Isn't that funny? I did it.
- 54:35Speaker 22: So I said to Michael, I have to go and
- 54:38Speaker 22: play Christopher Pankhurst, mate. He said, you can, but you
- 54:41Speaker 22: have to finish the last show on the Saturday night.
- 54:43Speaker 14: I thought, you git.
- 54:46Speaker 22: So Richard O'Brien wrote a song.
- 54:49Speaker 14: At the interval.
- 54:50Speaker 22: It's a wonderful song called The Day Magenta Went Away,
- 54:54Speaker 22: and he sang it. He won't give it to me.
- 54:56Speaker 22: Nobody's ever heard it. I know it a bit. I
- 55:00Speaker 22: thought I hardly knew her. I spoke so harshly to her.
- 55:06Speaker 22: The day magenta went away. It's a wonderful riff-raff song
- 55:11Speaker 22: to magenta, and he won't let anyone hear it. I said,
- 55:16Speaker 22: I feel so annoyed.
- 55:17Speaker 14: It was wonderful. So I got very emotional.
- 55:20Speaker 22: And I had to get the overnight train to Halifax
- 55:23Speaker 22: to begin standing on a box outside a mill making
- 55:28Speaker 22: speeches about my father's a socialist and my father. And
- 55:33Speaker 22: I'm there covered in glitter, which I couldn't get off
- 55:36Speaker 22: because we all wore glitter. And you couldn't get it
- 55:39Speaker 22: off because it was made of glass. And thank God
- 55:42Speaker 22: I was in Victorian blouses up to my chin so
- 55:47Speaker 22: you couldn't see it.
- 55:47Speaker 8: Well, that main song that brought you in, then as
- 55:51Speaker 8: we moved to the movie, we were just the girl
- 55:53Speaker 8: in line standing there. We were discussing how Richard stole
- 55:56Speaker 8: it from you. That was the thing that brought you
- 55:59Speaker 8: in the door. So, I mean, how upset were you
- 56:03Speaker 8: with that?
- 56:04Speaker 14: He didn't steal anything.
- 56:05Speaker 22: The point is, I say that as a joke, the
- 56:08Speaker 22: point is, they said, we're not, having gone to the film,
- 56:12Speaker 22: the premise with Usherette opening the film, won't work. A
- 56:16Speaker 22: girl with an ice cream tray walking down singing the song.
- 56:19Speaker 22: So I said, oh, yeah, of course, right. And I said,
- 56:23Speaker 22: you mean I'm not singing the song? This was a lunch.
- 56:26Speaker 14: About the film. And they said.
- 56:28Speaker 22: Well, no.
- 56:29Speaker 14: And I thought, oh.
- 56:31Speaker 22: I said, oh, sorry, then I'm not doing the film.
- 56:35Speaker 22: And they said, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. They said, look,
- 56:40Speaker 22: come around the corner. They produced a John Coldstone's house
- 56:44Speaker 22: around the corner in Kensington. They said, come and see
- 56:49Speaker 22: what we've got. So they showed me the sets of
- 56:51Speaker 22: the laboratory. They showed me things called Transylvanians, which we
- 56:56Speaker 22: didn't have. They showed me the costumes. They showed me,
- 57:00Speaker 22: and I said, I'm doing this. Anyway, so I honestly
- 57:05Speaker 22: thought they were going to get Shirley Bassey or somebody
- 57:07Speaker 22: to sing the song. And then it turned out it
- 57:11Speaker 22: was Richard O'Brien, and I thought, you git.
- 57:15Speaker 8: And I'm one of the few people that I know
- 57:17Speaker 8: that spent way too much time watching Hawk the Slayer. Oh, no,
- 57:22Speaker 8: you didn't.
- 57:22Speaker 14: That film was bloody marvelous.
- 57:24Speaker 8: Jack Palance.
- 57:25Speaker 16: I love that movie.
- 57:27Speaker 11: Great.
- 57:28Speaker 22: We all did.
- 57:29Speaker 8: Thank you.
- 57:31Speaker 14: I love you.
- 57:34Speaker 8: Thank you, man.
- 57:37Speaker 1: You didn't mention Shock Dreamer, did you?
- 57:39Speaker 8: No, I would have easily talked about Shock Dreamer. No,
- 57:43Speaker 8: I mentioned Hawk the Slayer. Which I, myself, as a youngster,
- 57:50Speaker 8: spent way too much time in front of cable television
- 57:54Speaker 8: and saw Hawk the Slayer.
- 57:55Speaker 1: So many times.
- 57:57Speaker 8: And I thought it was awesome. I watch scenes of
- 58:00Speaker 8: it now and I'm like, I see the problems, sure.
- 58:03Speaker 8: But I'm like, it's still, at a time when a
- 58:05Speaker 8: kid growing up loving the Beastmaster, you know, I'm like,
- 58:09Speaker 8: this is right up my alley. So I'm like, especially
- 58:11Speaker 8: like Jack Palance is so amazing in that movie. So
- 58:15Speaker 8: like the fact that I'm like, oh yeah, she's like
- 58:17Speaker 8: the witch. She's the woman, I think is how she's
- 58:19Speaker 8: credited ever so lovingly.
- 58:21Speaker 1: Yeah, just woman, woman.
- 58:23Speaker 8: But she's mostly, yeah, she's like the witch, the, you know,
- 58:26Speaker 8: the sorceress of this story. And, um, But yeah, you
- 58:31Speaker 8: heard her. She freaked out. Because I expected her to like, again,
- 58:35Speaker 8: sometimes people are not so proud of certain movies. So
- 58:37Speaker 8: I sometimes bring up stuff that they're like, oh God,
- 58:40Speaker 8: I don't want to talk about that one.
- 58:41Speaker 3: She loved it.
- 58:42Speaker 8: She was so excited. She told me she loved me
- 58:46Speaker 8: because I brought it up. That's awesome. If you listen
- 58:49Speaker 8: very closely here.
- 58:51Speaker 14: Oh, thank you.
- 58:52Speaker 8: It's good to meet you. Thank you. As I'm walking away.
- 58:58Speaker 8: She just is so overwhelmed by it. She's just like, shit.
- 59:01Speaker 8: I'm like, oh, I love you. You crazy woman, you.
- 59:07Speaker 8: oh patricia quinn what what a piece of work.
- 59:10Speaker 1: See now we just need somebody here in louisville representing
- 59:13Speaker 1: like your warrior of the future or exactly let's just
- 59:16Speaker 1: bring it all in.
- 59:17Speaker 8: I we were kind of do we started off going
- 59:19Speaker 8: to do just a ton of those old 80s vhs
- 59:22Speaker 8: classic like cable three in the morning sword and sandal
- 59:26Speaker 8: kind of movies oh yeah We didn't get so far in.
- 59:28Speaker 8: We wanted to hit some ATORs, like all of those classic,
- 59:33Speaker 8: very special 80s films.
- 59:35Speaker 1: Sword and the Sorcerer is very dear to my heart. Yeah, yeah.
- 59:38Speaker 1: Featuring Richard Moll.
- 59:40Speaker 8: I think there was another, not the one I've already,
- 59:42Speaker 8: we have done a version of the 70s Sorcerers, but
- 59:44Speaker 8: I think there was an 80s, if I'm remembering right.
- 59:48Speaker 1: I think, yeah, it sounds right.
- 59:49Speaker 8: There's a few of them that I start to blank
- 59:51Speaker 8: on which was which. Like, I saw so many at
- 59:54Speaker 8: that time that, yeah, I have to go back and went, wait,
- 59:56Speaker 8: which one did this happen? So, we need to watch
- 1:00:00Speaker 8: them all, obviously.
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: Yeah, and of course, we can't forget Barbarians featuring, I
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: can't remember the name of the twins, but they were
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: two twins. Those creepy twins. They were bodybuilders.
- 1:00:08Speaker 8: They're so weird.
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: They were in many movies together, but that was the
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: only sword and sandal one they did there.
- 1:00:13Speaker 8: Yeah, they were usually wearing business suits for some reason.
- 1:00:16Speaker 8: There's a movie where they're like businessmen and then they
- 1:00:18Speaker 8: tear their sleeves off the suits because their arms are
- 1:00:21Speaker 8: busting out.
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: Maybe it was like a mafia movie or something.
- 1:00:23Speaker 8: I don't know. I just remember them in suits without
- 1:00:25Speaker 8: sleeves and it was Weird.
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: They're weird. The Barbarians movies, they're barely dressed. Oh, yeah.
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: Throughout the entire movie. I think their pecs are even undressed.
- 1:00:34Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:00:35Speaker 8: What do you mean? And then, okay, so to round
- 1:00:41Speaker 8: it out, this was the one that, as I came
- 1:00:43Speaker 8: in today, I'd already seen your John Wesley Shipp interview.
- 1:00:46Speaker 8: And I'm like, all right, he seems fun. He seems
- 1:00:48Speaker 8: like he's up for it. I've had, again, I'm always
- 1:00:51Speaker 8: known to bring visual props onto an audio show.
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
- 1:00:55Speaker 8: It's a running theme throughout this decade of episodes. So
- 1:01:00Speaker 8: I found something again. When you're a semi hoarder, you
- 1:01:04Speaker 8: dig up some really old, weird stuff.
- 1:01:06Speaker 10: Sure.
- 1:01:07Speaker 8: I have tons of magazines for years and years and years.
- 1:01:11Speaker 8: And in the middle of them, occasionally a catalog because kids,
- 1:01:14Speaker 8: you'll be shocked. Back in the day, there was no internet.
- 1:01:17Speaker 8: So when you got weird movie geek stuff and stuff
- 1:01:20Speaker 8: from weird genre TV, you mail ordered it.
- 1:01:23Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:01:24Speaker 8: Oh yeah that's the only way you could find things
- 1:01:27Speaker 8: and you had to get like catalogs from other countries
- 1:01:29Speaker 8: half the time just to find this weird stuff but
- 1:01:32Speaker 8: one of the big ones that i actually did get
- 1:01:34Speaker 8: a lot of at the time and i'm gonna bust
- 1:01:36Speaker 8: it out for you so you can experience the wonder
- 1:01:38Speaker 8: that is the old school um warner brothers collection oh
- 1:01:44Speaker 8: now you'll notice the rover danger field on the cover
- 1:01:46Speaker 8: here rodney uh jim oh yeah rodney doing kids stuff
- 1:01:51Speaker 8: Didn't ever think I would see that happen, and yet
- 1:01:53Speaker 8: it did.
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: It happened once.
- 1:01:55Speaker 8: But what was fun about these catalogs is as you
- 1:01:58Speaker 8: get into them, the people that are your models for
- 1:02:03Speaker 8: all these products, this is Nancy Everhard. You get people
- 1:02:08Speaker 8: from the shows and movies that they had at the time.
- 1:02:11Speaker 8: This is the dumb little girl from Growing Pains that
- 1:02:14Speaker 8: now is in the Marvel movies for some reason. I've
- 1:02:16Speaker 8: never figured out what's going on. She was the add-on kid.
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: Oh, Ashley Johnson.
- 1:02:20Speaker 6: Okay, yeah.
- 1:02:20Speaker 8: She's the one that came in towards the end. But yeah,
- 1:02:22Speaker 8: like half of these, like here's, again, the other girl
- 1:02:24Speaker 8: from Going Pains is like modeling our t-shirts and whatnot.
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: Strange.
- 1:02:28Speaker 8: So you get to... Oh, Lord.
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: There's a.
- 1:02:31Speaker 8: Jonathan Winters. Jonathan Winters.
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: Arguing with Bugs Bunny.
- 1:02:34Speaker 8: There's Chuck Jones, Vanna White. See, these are very special
- 1:02:37Speaker 8: people that they get to be in their catalog. But
- 1:02:39Speaker 8: I remembered when I dug this up, I was like, wait,
- 1:02:42Speaker 8: isn't John Wesley Shipp in his Flash days... The model
- 1:02:46Speaker 8: for the, he is in the Sears catalog, more or less.
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: And there's Amanda Pays right there. And Amanda Pays.
- 1:02:52Speaker 8: So this is them modeling the WB leather bomber jacket.
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: You know what? They make it look good.
- 1:02:57Speaker 8: Well, as he says, he's dreamily looking at her there.
- 1:03:02Speaker 8: You know what?
- 1:03:02Speaker 10: Yeah, man.
- 1:03:03Speaker 3: Man.
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: It pays a lovely lady.
- 1:03:04Speaker 8: I ran across this. I was just like, all right,
- 1:03:06Speaker 8: I don't know if he even remembers that he did this.
- 1:03:08Speaker 8: I'm like, I wonder if he has a copy of this.
- 1:03:10Speaker 8: I'm like, I'm going to drag it here. And as
- 1:03:13Speaker 8: I sit down, I, you know, if we, if we
- 1:03:14Speaker 8: get a chance to talk, I'm going to let him
- 1:03:16Speaker 8: take a look at this. So yeah, that's the plan
- 1:03:18Speaker 8: is I'm going to unleash this, uh, this ridiculous Warner
- 1:03:21Speaker 8: brothers catalog where he's one of the, the models for
- 1:03:24Speaker 8: their fancy Warner brothers.
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: That's awesome.
- 1:03:26Speaker 8: And we'll see how he responds. I specifically wanted to
- 1:03:44Speaker 8: do it this time because I found something. This is
- 1:03:45Speaker 8: when it's good to be a hoarder. I'm assuming you
- 1:03:48Speaker 8: remember these? Only because, uh.
- 1:03:54Speaker 8: Look at that.
- 1:03:56Speaker 9: Oh, yeah.
- 1:03:56Speaker 16: We did a whole photo. Oh, I wish I had
- 1:03:58Speaker 16: a picture of that.
- 1:03:59Speaker 8: The actual 8x10s of those. That's what you need.
- 1:04:02Speaker 16: No, I didn't think she was a bit pretty.
- 1:04:04Speaker 8: No, you're not dreamily looking at her there.
- 1:04:07Speaker 16: I'm not looking at her dreamily.
- 1:04:08Speaker 8: And then, look, there was another look at those shots.
- 1:04:12Speaker 16: Yes, I remember that.
- 1:04:14Speaker 8: So I ran across those lately.
- 1:04:17Speaker 16: Who is that guy?
- 1:04:17Speaker 3: What happened to him?
- 1:04:18Speaker 8: I was wondering if you could tell me.
- 1:04:20Speaker 16: 28 years ago.
- 1:04:22Speaker 8: What's sad is, yeah, it strikes me now. I think
- 1:04:25Speaker 8: back and I'm like, I was just ordering stuff out
- 1:04:27Speaker 8: of this catalog. What happened? Where's the time gone?
- 1:04:30Speaker 16: Yeah, no, look at the little Mark Hamill. This is
- 1:04:33Speaker 16: my favorite. That's my favorite.
- 1:04:36Speaker 3: Oh, man.
- 1:04:36Speaker 8: So I didn't know if you still had any of these,
- 1:04:39Speaker 8: but yeah, if you remember the The photo shoots and
- 1:04:42Speaker 8: all that that went along with it.
- 1:04:43Speaker 16: Oh, I remember.
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 1:04:45Speaker 8: Back when it was the WB World.
- 1:04:47Speaker 16: The catalog, yeah.
- 1:04:49Speaker 8: Before CW came along.
- 1:04:51Speaker 16: Yeah, we were CBS. Warner Brothers for CBS.
- 1:04:54Speaker 8: Yeah, which is weird. It's all changed hands now, like
- 1:04:57Speaker 8: ABC and Disney. They've all changed hands so many times now.
- 1:05:01Speaker 8: It's crazy. I know you're known for so much TV work,
- 1:05:06Speaker 8: but you've been in a lot of stuff over the years.
- 1:05:09Speaker 8: We focus more on movies. Are there any movies you've
- 1:05:11Speaker 8: been in that you think are underrated that not enough
- 1:05:15Speaker 8: people have seen?
- 1:05:15Speaker 17: Well, someone just came to me and mentioned an independent
- 1:05:19Speaker 17: film I did a couple years ago about the life
- 1:05:21Speaker 17: of Edward Fudge. He wrote the book The Fire That Consumes.
- 1:05:24Speaker 8: Nice.
- 1:05:25Speaker 17: And we did his life story. Mackenzie Astin played Edward.
- 1:05:29Speaker 17: I played his father.
- 1:05:30Speaker 10: Hmm.
- 1:05:31Speaker 17: And that was a very moving picture. Of course, from
- 1:05:35Speaker 17: back in the day, there's Never Ending Story 2.
- 1:05:38Speaker 8: Oh, yeah.
- 1:05:39Speaker 17: And then I've done independent films, Separation Anxiety, Golden Shoes,
- 1:05:46Speaker 17: where I played the president. You know, a couple of
- 1:05:48Speaker 17: different things.
- 1:05:50Speaker 8: Playing president, are you heading that way? It's not too
- 1:05:55Speaker 8: hard to make that jump from actor to president.
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: No, no.
- 1:05:58Speaker 16: That is a job I would not want.
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: Nobody wants.
- 1:06:01Speaker 16: We should have somebody very experienced in that job.
- 1:06:04Speaker 3: Yes.
- 1:06:05Speaker 8: Yes, we should. Thank you. Yes, we should.
- 1:06:07Speaker 16: If you know what I mean, and I think you do.
- 1:06:10Speaker 8: I think so. But yeah, and I love The Flash,
- 1:06:13Speaker 8: so I guess you guys have a lot of crazy
- 1:06:15Speaker 8: stuff coming up and impressive crossover events. We do.
- 1:06:19Speaker 17: Tuesday night is the 100th episode, which Tom Cavanaugh directed.
- 1:06:25Speaker 16: Bob Catalana is my Appearance manager.
- 1:06:27Speaker 15: Yeah.
- 1:06:28Speaker 16: So sometimes that's all I can think of.
- 1:06:30Speaker 17: But Tom Cavanaugh directed it and it sets up the crossover,
- 1:06:34Speaker 17: the Flash Arrow Supergirl crossover, which happens the following weekend
- 1:06:40Speaker 17: on December 9th, 10th and 11th.
- 1:06:42Speaker 16: And I'll be in one of the crossovers and I'll.
- 1:06:43Speaker 17: Be in or maybe two because I just spoke to
- 1:06:46Speaker 17: Greg Berlanti and I'll be in the 100th.
- 1:06:50Speaker 14: All right.
- 1:06:50Speaker 8: Well, thank you for talking with me, man. Thank you.
- 1:06:52Speaker 14: Thank you.
- 1:06:52Speaker 8: Very cool. I just thought that was fun. I wanted
- 1:06:55Speaker 8: to drag that out.
- 1:06:56Speaker 14: No, I love it.
- 1:06:57Speaker 8: Thank you, man. We said at the time, we're cataloging.
- 1:07:00Speaker 10: There's another one here. Oh, whoa, whoa.
- 1:07:21Speaker 3: Here it is.
- 1:07:22Speaker 8: The Olsens. I mean.
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: Oh, there we go.
- 1:07:25Speaker 8: The highest paid children in the world.
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: And Urkel.
- 1:07:29Speaker 8: See, he shares a catalog with Urkel. Like, that's big time, man.
- 1:07:33Speaker 3: Wow.
- 1:07:35Speaker 8: Bob Kane, Hawk and Batman. Oh, there we go. Exactly.
- 1:07:40Speaker 8: Still around the cycle. bronson pin show who let him
- 1:07:44Speaker 8: in this catalog there we go there he is modeling
- 1:07:47Speaker 8: the flash t look at that you want to order
- 1:07:51Speaker 8: that right now don't you oh yeah i'll take the
- 1:07:53Speaker 8: one in black shirt so there you go see i
- 1:07:55Speaker 8: was like for old school fans there's mark there's mark
- 1:07:58Speaker 8: hamill with the with the hair like he's he's coming
- 1:08:01Speaker 8: straight out of the show to come do these these
- 1:08:03Speaker 8: these promo shots for the flash t-shirts And I was like, this.
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: Is just funny. Were they paid any extra for this?
- 1:08:09Speaker 8: I wonder, you know, it's like, I think it's kind
- 1:08:11Speaker 8: of funny that, you know, you don't see this kind
- 1:08:13Speaker 8: of stuff now. Like nobody's this, this is kind of
- 1:08:15Speaker 8: the tail end of like being knee deep in like
- 1:08:18Speaker 8: a studio, you know, it's like now everybody just does
- 1:08:21Speaker 8: a one-off movie. You sign one deal and you're out.
- 1:08:23Speaker 8: And like, so the fact that they were this ingrained
- 1:08:26Speaker 8: in the Warner Brothers, uh, to do their modeling shots
- 1:08:29Speaker 8: for the catalog. I just thought that was so much fun.
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: That's fantastic.
- 1:08:33Speaker 8: All right, John, let's take a look at this thing.
- 1:08:35Speaker 8: He was a good sport, and you heard him. You
- 1:08:38Speaker 8: got to come join in on the new, used to
- 1:08:42Speaker 8: be on the old WB, but now it's CW.
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: That's right.
- 1:08:46Speaker 8: He's got all kinds of cool stuff coming up on
- 1:08:48Speaker 8: the CW. I'm sure you can tell them about that.
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: Well, of course, this week is the 100th episode of
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: The Flash coming up on Tuesday, December 4th. I've got
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: it on very good authority from Jordan. Wesley Shipp himself.
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: That episode is not to be missed because Elseworlds, the
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: big crossover, always happens annually here. It's coming up next
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: week on December 9th, 10th, and 11th. That's a Sunday, Monday, Tuesday. Basically,
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: the December 4th episode of The Flash leads right into
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: the crossover.
- 1:09:17Speaker 17: Yeah.
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: And then basically Supergirl and Flash do a little bit
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: of switcheroo this year for the crossover. So basically Flash
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: is first on December 9th, then Arrow, then Supergirl. So
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: it's going to be awesome. I mean, we're dealing with,
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: we're introducing Batwoman. We're introducing Lois Lane finally. Superman will
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: be involved in all three episodes. For comics fans, one
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: thing that really strikes a very deep chord with me,
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: they're introducing the Monitor series. Into the Arrowverse, which can
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: only mean one thing. We are leading towards Crisis on
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: Infinite Earths.
- 1:09:50Speaker 8: I saw the Superman in the new... Alternate suit on
- 1:09:55Speaker 8: the little promo on there.
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: Yeah, the black and silver.
- 1:09:57Speaker 8: That's going to be different. We're definitely heading down a
- 1:10:00Speaker 8: different territory here.
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: But the most important thing we're kind of glossing over
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: here is that there's a big lineup part. Of course,
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: the main plot of Elseworlds is that Barry Allen is
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: the Green Arrow, Oliver Queen is the Flash, and no
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: one knows but them. Everybody else thinks it's normal. They
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: are the two that know it's not. But there's a
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: lineup shot towards the promo there, towards the end of it.
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: You see, you know, Oliver dresses the Flash. Barry's dressed
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: the Green Arrow. Kara's there in all Supergirl regalia. But
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: there's a fourth person in that lineup. That would be
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: John Wesley Shipp in the 90s Flash suits.
- 1:10:35Speaker 8: In the classic era. Not the cool t-shirt he was
- 1:10:38Speaker 8: just wearing. But that same era that came out of
- 1:10:40Speaker 8: this catalog is his old school outfit. So yeah, I've
- 1:10:44Speaker 8: heard him. Heard him go on about that, I think,
- 1:10:47Speaker 8: in your interview. Yes, he did. And it was, yeah,
- 1:10:49Speaker 8: it was kind of cool that they're definitely... I mean,
- 1:10:52Speaker 8: to me, it was really interesting when they brought him
- 1:10:54Speaker 8: in as sort of an unofficial. Like, okay, we're not
- 1:10:57Speaker 8: exactly acknowledging this is the same universe because he wasn't Flash.
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:11:01Speaker 8: He was instead Barry's dad. But at the same time,
- 1:11:04Speaker 8: the fact that they then... work in Mark Hamill's character.
- 1:11:07Speaker 8: They work in all like, they've got all these ties
- 1:11:09Speaker 8: to it.
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: Like Amanda pays in the first season. It's yeah.
- 1:11:11Speaker 8: It's like a nod to the old. It's like, it's
- 1:11:14Speaker 8: not like, Oh, we're just going to like throw out
- 1:11:15Speaker 8: this old, you know, series that people loved. It's like,
- 1:11:18Speaker 8: we're going to pay tribute to it in a weird way. And,
- 1:11:21Speaker 8: kind of morph it into this new different thing. I
- 1:11:24Speaker 8: thought that was amazing that they brought him on board.
- 1:11:26Speaker 8: And now that they keep finding new and interesting ways
- 1:11:29Speaker 8: to work him back in every season, it's pretty awesome.
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: I mean, when normally he plays Jay Garrick on the show,
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: which basically at this point is the flash from earth tube.
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: Of course we know it was like the classic silver
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: age flash or golden age flash.
- 1:11:41Speaker 6: Sorry.
- 1:11:43Speaker 8: Don't upset Comic Eats.
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: I'm sorry. I should know better. But yeah, so that
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: was really cool having him. Of course, that was a
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: big thrill for me when they revealed the man in
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: the Iron Mask and it was the real Jay Garrick.
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: He was him. Yes, because Flash fans have been wanting
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: him as Jay Garrick since day one.
- 1:12:00Speaker 8: It's, yeah, the fake out that they did of like, no,
- 1:12:02Speaker 8: he's going to be the dad. That's what you thought.
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: Exactly. But then, of course, the question that he amusingly
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: narrowly avoided was my theory that he's not exactly the
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: Barry Allen from his show, that he's our Barry Allen
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: from the future. Could he comment? And he avoided the question.
- 1:12:23Speaker 8: Are you trying to ruin their show?
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: I'm not trying to ruin anything. Don't spoil it for anyone.
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: I have theories.
- 1:12:31Speaker 8: Fan theories is a thing.
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: Your fanatic is no different.
- 1:12:36Speaker 8: We'll have to introduce you to the internet. That's where
- 1:12:40Speaker 8: they live and breed.
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: I kind of help some of that a little bit too.
- 1:12:45Speaker 8: I'm sure. I'm trying to think. There's been... So many
- 1:12:53Speaker 8: things going on this weekend. Are there any other high
- 1:12:55Speaker 8: points that we haven't already covered for you?
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: Well, I did get to speak to Charles Martinier, the
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: voice of Mario. That was really cool. Nice, nice. Of course,
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: it was very cool for my 11-year-old nephew as well,
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: who is currently obsessed with all things Mario.
- 1:13:11Speaker 8: It's weird how that hangs on. You'd think as many
- 1:13:15Speaker 8: years ago as it started... And as many times as
- 1:13:18Speaker 8: it's kind of gone up and down, like the popularity,
- 1:13:20Speaker 8: depending on what system comes out, you know, it's like
- 1:13:23Speaker 8: sort of big again. And then it'll disappear and you'll
- 1:13:25Speaker 8: think maybe it'll be gone for good this time. And
- 1:13:27Speaker 8: it's back every time.
- 1:13:28Speaker 15: It really is.
- 1:13:29Speaker 8: It comes back with a vengeance.
- 1:13:31Speaker 6: Mario.
- 1:13:32Speaker 8: Again, I saw a lot of people dressed as Mario.
- 1:13:34Speaker 8: There was one last night as I was leaving that
- 1:13:36Speaker 8: was dressed in a red business suit, but with the
- 1:13:39Speaker 8: Mario mustache and a red Mario cap.
- 1:13:42Speaker 10: Oh, wow.
- 1:13:42Speaker 8: But otherwise was in a full like suit and tie
- 1:13:44Speaker 8: that was also the same shade of red as his hat,
- 1:13:48Speaker 8: is businessman Mario. Nobody makes more money than Mario, so
- 1:13:52Speaker 8: I guess that's accurate.
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: He's been doing the role for 28 years.
- 1:13:56Speaker 14: That's crazy.
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: Talk about gainful employment. God bless him.
- 1:14:02Speaker 8: It has been a pretty amazing convention. I'm glad to
- 1:14:07Speaker 8: have them. As I said, this is their first year here,
- 1:14:09Speaker 8: but they've been doing it for many years. I briefly,
- 1:14:13Speaker 8: a while ago, talked to one of the co-runners And then, again,
- 1:14:17Speaker 8: talking to Sammy earlier this weekend, yeah, kind of getting
- 1:14:21Speaker 8: the overview of how they've been running this show. And
- 1:14:23Speaker 8: it's really well put together.
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: It really is.
- 1:14:25Speaker 8: Professionally run. And having been to as many as I have,
- 1:14:28Speaker 8: I've seen some that don't quite do things right over
- 1:14:31Speaker 8: the years. So, yeah, it's really promising to see them
- 1:14:35Speaker 8: come in this first year and already have things running
- 1:14:38Speaker 8: as smoothly as they did. So, this is impressive. Yeah.
- 1:14:41Speaker 8: Points to them.
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: Absolutely. Oh, and one other thing I almost forgot to
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: leave out. I didn't get to interview him, but I
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: did get to hang out a little bit with Lloyd
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: Kaufman of Troma Films. Another person I was really looking
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: forward to meeting. He was awesome.
- 1:14:55Speaker 8: I don't know what to do with Lloyd.
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: Look, I have a standing invitation to come to New
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: York and hang out at Troma Films anytime I want.
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: Get a tour. I have to be put to work. Uh, yeah.
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: I mean, you know, if I'm going to hang out
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: with Lloyd Kaufman, I want to be either in a
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: movie or help him make one.
- 1:15:12Speaker 8: I did discuss last year this, I mean, I am
- 1:15:14Speaker 8: always amazed with the business end of what he's done
- 1:15:16Speaker 8: and building this weird little studio on his back the
- 1:15:19Speaker 8: way he did. But yeah, I do remember, um, last
- 1:15:21Speaker 8: year when I talked to Sean Gunn, who was also
- 1:15:23Speaker 8: here this weekend, but like last year I sat down
- 1:15:25Speaker 8: with him and, that's kind of what I focused. Like he's,
- 1:15:28Speaker 8: I guess at this point, so used to just having
- 1:15:29Speaker 8: guardians of the galaxy thrown at him. But like the
- 1:15:31Speaker 8: fact that I was talking about Tromeo and Juliet and
- 1:15:33Speaker 8: he was just like, Whoa, okay. Uh, let's, let's go
- 1:15:36Speaker 8: back to that. So like he, again, it's interesting where
- 1:15:40Speaker 8: they came from and how much work was put into
- 1:15:42Speaker 8: that original little first run of movies. And he's turned
- 1:15:46Speaker 8: it into its, its own weird little empire. So more,
- 1:15:48Speaker 8: more power to you, Lloyd.
- 1:15:50Speaker 11: I know.
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: And the thing I love too, of course there's, A
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: lot of celebrities out here, they're charging for autographs. They're
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: charging for pictures, which a lot of people, this is
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: the way they're making money nowadays.
- 1:15:59Speaker 4: It's fine.
- 1:15:59Speaker 8: It's a career at this point.
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: Totally acceptable now. For folks who balk at those prices, like, well,
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: you probably haven't been to a convention before.
- 1:16:05Speaker 8: Yeah, that's the way the world works now.
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: So what's wonderful is to get the rarities of a
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: big star or somebody that's an iconic statue like Lloyd Kaufman,
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: and he doesn't charge for autographs and pictures.
- 1:16:15Speaker 8: Yeah, he just likes coming out and hanging out and
- 1:16:17Speaker 8: talking with people.
- 1:16:17Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: He has a table full of merch on the other end.
- 1:16:20Speaker 8: Don't worry. He'll sell you merchandise.
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: He will make some money. He's not going to go
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: home poor today. He's always been a businessman. Yes, but no.
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: It was a great thrill getting to meet him, too.
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: Louisville Supercon has just been absolutely amazing.
- 1:16:33Speaker 8: Definitely impressive. So, yeah, just shout out to them. This
- 1:16:37Speaker 8: one is louisvillesupercon.com. Go there and figure out what's going
- 1:16:41Speaker 8: on for this version. But they've got, I think, four
- 1:16:43Speaker 8: or five other ones that they do throughout the year.
- 1:16:45Speaker 8: I know they started in Florida, and they've kind of
- 1:16:47Speaker 8: branched up. From there. So, like, go Google them. You know,
- 1:16:52Speaker 8: find the main site and find them closer to you
- 1:16:55Speaker 8: if you're not near Louisville because they're putting together a
- 1:16:57Speaker 8: good show.
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: Oh, it's a fantastic show.
- 1:16:59Speaker 8: I'm definitely looking forward to seeing what they put together
- 1:17:01Speaker 8: next year for Louisville Supercon.
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: Most definitely.
- 1:17:03Speaker 8: All right. I think we've rounded it out.
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: I think so, too.
- 1:17:08Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: We've said all we can really say about Louisville Supercon,
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: I believe.
- 1:17:12Speaker 8: Until next week.
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: That's right.
- 1:17:13Speaker 8: I have a very special... extra episode that spawned from
- 1:17:18Speaker 8: this weekend.
