- 0:16Speaker 2: Yet another mill is likely to close. This time it's
- 0:18Speaker 2: Carter hold Harvey's Eves Valley sawmill near Nelson. One hundred
- 0:22Speaker 2: and forty two jobs could be lost if this does happen.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Tasman mayor Tim King lives next door to the mill
- 0:26Speaker 2: and he's with us. Now, Hey Tim, Hey, hey you go.
- 0:30Speaker 2: I'm very well, Thank you, Tim. It doesn't sound like
- 0:32Speaker 2: this time it is related to the price of energy.
- 0:34Speaker 2: It just sounds like the co O mill is very efficient. Yeah.
- 0:38Speaker 3: Absolutely, I mean this is just a pure business decision.
- 0:41Speaker 3: This is a very efficient saw mill. There's actually been
- 0:43Speaker 3: a lot invested in it in the last five years
- 0:45Speaker 3: to make it as efficient as possible. It's just that
- 0:48Speaker 3: cal Ra was more efficient and they obviously want to
- 0:52Speaker 3: source all their sawn timber from a single location. So yep,
- 0:55Speaker 3: not due to energy prices or anything to do with
- 0:57Speaker 3: this mill itself. Just so happens there's one mill that's
- 1:01Speaker 3: more efficient than this one.
- 1:02Speaker 2: Which says to me then that it's probably a case
- 1:04Speaker 2: of you guys not being able to change their minds.
- 1:08Speaker 3: Yeah, from the conversations I've had over the course of
- 1:10Speaker 3: today that that's absolutely the perception I've got. There's no
- 1:14Speaker 3: chance of this decision changing.
- 1:16Speaker 2: Okay, well tell me you know for your area, how
- 1:20Speaker 2: devastating is the loss of one hundred and forty two jobs.
- 1:23Speaker 3: It's very significant and it's so obviously the most significant
- 1:26Speaker 3: impact and most immediate is on those one hundred and
- 1:28Speaker 3: forty two people directly employed at these valley but there
- 1:31Speaker 3: is a wide range of other businesses that support these
- 1:34Speaker 3: valley saw It's a big component of the forestry sector
- 1:37Speaker 3: in this region, so it's a very significant impact.
- 1:41Speaker 2: So if it does go ahead, and it sounds like
- 1:43Speaker 2: it's going to what happens to the land next to you?
- 1:47Speaker 3: From what Again? My understanding is it's going to be
- 1:50Speaker 3: retained in the ownership of Carter Holt Harvey. The mill
- 1:53Speaker 3: will be mothboard, the recently installed equipment is likely to
- 1:56Speaker 3: be disassembled in shipped to carrel or another location, and
- 2:02Speaker 3: this land will ultimately the fate of it will be
- 2:05Speaker 3: decided by Cardhold Harvey at some point in time.
- 2:08Speaker 2: Tim, thanks for talking to us, appreciate it. Tim King,
