- 0:56sober and help other Alcoholics achieve sobriety.
- 1:01Hi, my name is Jade and I'm an alcoholic.
- 1:04I'm sober today and I'm really grateful to be sober today.
- 1:08And I always like sharing that for me, I know it's by the grace
- 1:12of God and a a that I'm sober today because I definitely
- 1:15cannot do this myself. And I'm I'm grateful that I
- 1:18don't have to do this journey alone.
- 1:20I'm really grateful that I belong to the A a fellowship.
- 1:26For me, I believe that I was born an alcoholic.
- 1:33I didn't feel a part of anything right from the get go, like way
- 1:39before I picked up a drink. This is as a child.
- 1:41I just didn't feel like I belonged in my own family.
- 1:45I didn't feel like I fit in anywhere.
- 1:48I just felt different to everybody else.
- 1:51And, you know, I'd look around me and it just looked like
- 1:53everyone else knew how to live life and, and I didn't.
- 1:57And I just felt like there was something deeply wrong with me
- 2:01and I didn't want anyone to find out about that.
- 2:05Like I had a lot of shame around that.
- 2:08Like that feeling of not fitting in and not how not knowing how
- 2:11to do anything. I had shame around that and you
- 2:14know, I suffered anxiety as a child.
- 2:16I had panic attacks and you know, I just, I found life
- 2:20really hard. It was really hard for me.
- 2:23And a lot of the time I kept all that secret and it would just,
- 2:29it felt lonely. I felt really alone and I felt
- 2:32like I was the only one that felt that way.
- 2:36And then Fast forward to having, you know, my first drink, my
- 2:41first proper drunk, I'd, let's call it, at the age of 15, I
- 2:46just felt like, wow, I, I have found the answer to living
- 2:52because when I had that drink, I felt incredible.
- 2:57Like it made me feel warm. It made me feel at ease, like it
- 3:02really felt like a spiritual experience for me because my
- 3:09anxiety left me with that drink. You know, it was incredible.
- 3:13My panic attacks. I, I, I didn't feel panicked
- 3:17anymore. And you know, I felt good.
- 3:20I felt free. I felt like I could do life.
- 3:23Like I really felt like I'd found the answer, the living.
- 3:26I thought, thank God I can do life now.
- 3:29This stuff is amazing. Like, who would ever think that
- 3:33a drink could take away all my problems and set me free?
- 3:38But you know, I also really enjoy sharing that that was the
- 3:42biggest lie of my life because I was never free when I drank.
- 3:49Because like, I'm an alcoholic. Once I take a drink, I cannot
- 3:53stop. Alcoholism had me around the
- 3:56throat. I was a slave to alcoholism.
- 4:00As I said, once I take a drink I cannot stop no matter what plans
- 4:04I put in place. When I drink I get a complete
- 4:08personality change. Like when I'm sober I'm scared
- 4:13to check my letterbox in the dark.
- 4:15Like I have so much fear when I'm sober, yet when I drink, my
- 4:20God, I change completely. I am off, I'm running, I'm by
- 4:25myself. I'm in Hindley St. late at night
- 4:28and I'm with the biggest and the baddest people and I feel
- 4:31comfortable. Like I'm that different when I
- 4:34drink. Like when I drink I don't care.
- 4:37When I'm sober I care about everything and I'm afraid and
- 4:40I'm anxious. When I'm drunk I don't care
- 4:43about a thing and I'm off. And as I said, I'm running and
- 4:47yeah, I'm, I'm an absolute lunatic when I drink.
- 4:52And that not caring thing that, you know, that's awful.
- 4:54Like because I'm a mother. I'm a mother of four children.
- 4:58And when I drink, I don't, I don't care about my children.
- 5:02It's awful. You know, it took me a long time
- 5:06to realize that, you know, I neglected my children through my
- 5:09drinking. And yeah, I actually didn't
- 5:13think I was that bad when I was drinking, but I was.
- 5:17But, you know, I would, I would, you know, drink, but I would
- 5:21clean my house and make sure it looked really nice and clean
- 5:24and, and everything looked good. And I would make my children
- 5:27lunches and, you know, cook the organic muffins.
- 5:31And I'm an aerobics instructor as well.
- 5:34So, you know, I had this image of being fit and healthy, but I
- 5:38wasn't, it was it was all a lie. Like when I was cleaning the
- 5:41house, I was cleaning the house drunk.
- 5:43Like my kids saw me fall over the vacuum cleaner when I was
- 5:47cooking, I was cooking drunk like my Sid.
- 5:50My kids saw me fall into the oven, you know, as I'm cooking
- 5:54the muffins. It was awful.
- 5:58You know, my kids saw me with a glaze over my eyes constantly
- 6:01and, and not being able to remember the conversations I had
- 6:04with them the next day. There were nights I put my
- 6:06children to bed and I woke up the next morning and I couldn't
- 6:09remember putting them to bed. It was awful.
- 6:13I wasn't living life, you know, I was just existing.
- 6:18Yeah, it was just awful. And I actually came into a, A,
- 6:21the first time when I was about 33 and, you know, I'd had a
- 6:26drunken argument with my husband at the time and I broke my wrist
- 6:30in trying to push him out of the house.
- 6:31And I had deep shame around that.
- 6:34And I, I lied about it. I said, I, I said I broke my
- 6:37wrist by scrubbing the bath so hard.
- 6:39But you know, that was a lie. I, I tried to push my, my then
- 6:42husband out of the house and I just thought, my God, my life is
- 6:46just crazy. Like I am not a violent person
- 6:49yet when I drink, I'm starting to become violent now.
- 6:52So I rang my dad who is in the fellowship.
- 6:56He's been sober now for 44 years.
- 6:58And I rang him and I said, dad, can you please help me?
- 7:00I think I've got a problem with my drinking.
- 7:03And he took me to my first meeting and as I said, I was 33
- 7:06and I went to my first meeting and I identified straight away.
- 7:10Like I heard everyone's stories and I'm just like, my God, you
- 7:13know, I'm an alcoholic for sure. I'm definitely an alcoholic.
- 7:18But at 33, I just, I couldn't accept it.
- 7:21I thought I can't, I can't not drink for the rest of my life.
- 7:26How am I going to do that? Like, how am I going to stay
- 7:29married sober? How am I going to do life sober?
- 7:32How am I going to talk to people sober?
- 7:34Because I, you know, I suffered terrible social anxiety and I
- 7:38just couldn't, I couldn't think of how to do it.
- 7:41And I just looked at everyone in AA and I'm thinking, well,
- 7:44obviously your lives aren't as bad as mine.
- 7:47You obviously all, you know, don't need to drink.
- 7:50But I do like, my life is really hard.
- 7:53And, you know, I didn't ask for help.
- 7:57And that was my biggest problem. I I tried to do it myself and I
- 8:01didn't want to go through the steps with anybody.
- 8:03I thought, you know, I'm an intelligent woman.
- 8:05I'm just going to take the big book home by myself.
- 8:07And I'm going to take myself through the steps.
- 8:10And I don't need anyone to do it with me.
- 8:12And yeah, I'm just going to do it all by myself.
- 8:14So that was my plan. That's what I did.
- 8:17And I tell you what, I went insane.
- 8:20I went mental. Like this is when I really knew
- 8:24that I was an alcoholic because I'd put the drink down.
- 8:27I was going through going to a few meetings, but I wasn't being
- 8:30honest. I was saying I was fine when I
- 8:33was not fine. As I said, I put alcohol down
- 8:37and then all my feelings came up.
- 8:39All the feelings that I'd suppressed through drinking and
- 8:42numbing myself came up and I could not deal with them.
- 8:47Like I'm telling you, I, I wasn't hearing voices in my
- 8:50head, I was hearing screaming in my head.
- 8:53I wasn't drinking. I was trying not to drink.
- 8:57I was white knuckling it and I just felt like I wanted to RIP
- 9:01my face off. I'm, I, I tell you, I, I was, I
- 9:05was visualising throwing myself through windows like I went mad
- 9:11because I wasn't being honest and I wasn't doing what's
- 9:14suggested and I wasn't asking for help.
- 9:18I was trying to do it all my way.
- 9:19And what that taught me is when I try and stay sober my way for
- 9:24me, I end up drinking again. And I did, that's what I did.
- 9:28I thought, you know what, I can't do this.
- 9:31What I'm going to do is I'm going to buy a carton of
- 9:34Strongbow and I'm going to make it last a month and I just will
- 9:38really try hard to control my drinking.
- 9:41So that's what I set out to do. And you know, as us Alcoholics
- 9:46know, Strongbow is not strong enough.
- 9:48And it wasn't long until I was drinking flat out again.
- 9:52Like because I'm an alcoholic, I can't control my drinking.
- 9:55I can't drink safely. And once I take a drink, I
- 9:58cannot stop. And you know, for me, I drank
- 10:01for another seven years. You know, it took me 7 years to
- 10:05get back here and I'm telling you, I can't even put into words
- 10:08those seven years. It, it, it got so much worse.
- 10:13And I know that today if I pick up a drink, my life always gets
- 10:17worse. And if I don't pick up a drink,
- 10:20my life always gets better. And you know, being in a A for a
- 10:24while now, I have never, ever heard anyone say they went out
- 10:29drinking again and it got better.
- 10:30I've never heard it. Only I ever hear is that I went
- 10:34out drinking again and it got worse.
- 10:36That's all I've heard. And that's my story as well.
- 10:39It got so much worse. And, you know, for me, my
- 10:42marriage ended up failing. I had to leave the family home.
- 10:46You know, I didn't have a permanent job.
- 10:49I, I had to find somewhere to live.
- 10:51And it was just, it was hell. It was absolutely hell.
- 10:56And I, I, you know, I continue drinking for, I think another
- 11:01five months after my marriage failing.
- 11:03And I tell you what, that that almost killed me.
- 11:08Like I was out in Hindley St. and I'm, you know, going home
- 11:11with people I didn't know. And I share that because there
- 11:15was nothing glamorous about my drinking.
- 11:17I am not a woman who was taking a few sips of champagne and
- 11:20spilling a little bit on the carpet.
- 11:22My drinking was disgusting. I was drunk, I was sloppy, I was
- 11:28putting myself in really dangerous situations, and I
- 11:31nearly died. That's my drinking story.
- 11:34It was absolutely horrendous. I was dying from the inside out.
- 11:39And what happened was I woke up 1 morning, it was the 11th of
- 11:44the 11th, 2013, and I woke up and I didn't know where I was
- 11:50again. This wasn't the first time I
- 11:53didn't know who I was next to. Again, this wasn't the first
- 11:56time and it hit me, I am going to die if I pick up another
- 12:02drink and it was that day. It wasn't like I have to not
- 12:05pick up a drink, you know, in a couple of weeks time or I'm
- 12:08going to try and control it. It was the truest truth I've
- 12:11ever felt in my life. It was a voice from it wasn't a
- 12:14voice, it was a feeling from God.
- 12:17And it was definitely you pick up a drink today, Jade, you're
- 12:20going to die or don't pick up a drink, Jade, and you can live.
- 12:24And thank God. I wanted to live just a little
- 12:28bit more than I wanted to die. And I don't know how I got back
- 12:32to a a Well, I do actually. It was God that got me back to
- 12:36AAI. Got back to a meeting by the
- 12:39grace of God and my second time in a a was very different from
- 12:44my first time. My second time there was no more
- 12:47Oh, I'm going to do it my way. It was I walked into a meeting
- 12:52and I said my name is Jade, I am an alcoholic, I am dying.
- 12:57Can you please help me? And I tell you what, that's when
- 13:02I truly became free because then I, you know, I said I was an
- 13:09alcoholic. I accepted who I am and I asked
- 13:16for help. And that's my story.
- 13:18I have to have help to get through this.
- 13:21And I got the help in a A. You all welcomed me with open
- 13:25loving arms. There was no conditions to your
- 13:29love. You just seriously wanted me to
- 13:31get sober. And I felt that, I, I felt, I
- 13:35felt that and I needed that. I needed you to love me because
- 13:39I didn't love myself then, you know, and I just came to
- 13:45meetings. You just told me to come to
- 13:46meetings and that's what I did. And I tell you what, in the
- 13:49beginning, I found that so hard. I did not feel the clinic of
- 13:53calm when I feel when I first came in, I didn't, I was
- 13:58petrified. I would shake in my seat.
- 14:01I would go beetroot red because I was so self-conscious and
- 14:05embarrassed and and had tremendous shame.
- 14:09I thought you were all looking at me.
- 14:10I thought you were all in your groups.
- 14:12I thought that I was a loner and it was hard.
- 14:16And I would sit there and I would sweat like my chair would
- 14:20be wet and it was just really hard.
- 14:24I really, I struggled in the beginning, but I just kept on
- 14:29coming back because I knew I had to if I was, if I was to live,
- 14:33because I, because I knew if I tried to do it by myself, I'd
- 14:35drink again and die. I just, I knew that.
- 14:39So yeah, it was, it was hard for me in the beginning, but thank
- 14:42God you kept on just saying, you know, keep coming back, keep
- 14:45coming to meetings. You know, some of you offered me
- 14:47coffee and biscuits and I just felt, felt your kindness and
- 14:51care and love and that's what kept me coming.
- 14:53You know, I needed that. And then, you know, eventually
- 14:57I, you know, started to sober up a bit and I started to hear the
- 15:00shares and, you know, I started to identify and think far out.
- 15:04You know, I'm not the only one going through this.
- 15:06Like there's other people like me who knew.
- 15:09I thought I was the only one. And then I started to, you know,
- 15:13very slowly start to feel that sense of belonging.
- 15:18And then I heard all these wonderful ways of living one day
- 15:21at a time without a drink. Because prior to this, I'd never
- 15:25heard one day at a time. My first time in a a, I'd only
- 15:28heard it's forever. You don't drink forever.
- 15:31Whereas the second time I heard it's one day at a time.
- 15:35And it is, it's one day at a time.
- 15:38And you know what, I, I actually went through a day without
- 15:42picking up a drink and I'm like, Oh my God, this is amazing.
- 15:46Like this, this is actually working.
- 15:48I've got a day up. And I felt a bit good about
- 15:50myself, you know, and I kept coming to meetings and then I
- 15:52got a week up. I mean, that's a miracle for an
- 15:55alcoholic, isn't it? Like I got a week up without
- 15:58having a drink. It was like, my God, this is
- 16:00incredible. And then I got a month up and
- 16:03then, you know, it got turned into a couple of months.
- 16:05And that's all I did in the beginning.
- 16:06I just didn't pick up a drink one day at a time.
- 16:10And I went to meetings and then, you know, it got to a stage at
- 16:13six months for me. I thought, you know, I might do
- 16:16what suggested I'll I'll get a sponsor and and I did.
- 16:20And that wasn't easy. It's not easy for me to ask for
- 16:23help, but I did. And I asked a lady and she said
- 16:26no. And it crashed to me.
- 16:29It did, you know, I felt that rejection, but I thought, how
- 16:31much do I really want this? And I wanted it.
- 16:34I wanted to be sober. So I asked someone else, you
- 16:37know what? She said no.
- 16:40So then again, I thought, how much do I really want this?
- 16:44I do. I want this.
- 16:45And you know, there's a saying in a, a, a, A is for people, you
- 16:49know, not necessarily who need it.
- 16:51It's for people who want it. And I believe that I wanted to
- 16:54be sober. And so I asked another woman and
- 16:57you know, she said yes. And she's still my so she's
- 16:59still my sponsor today. Like it just incredible.
- 17:03I think, you know, God knows what's good for us and well, God
- 17:07knows what's good for me and it and it's just been an amazing
- 17:10journey. And you know, that woman took me
- 17:12through the steps and that was incredible.
- 17:15It took me a year and a half to go through the steps.
- 17:17Like it wasn't just an overnight fix.
- 17:20And it's still not. I still try and live those
- 17:22steps. But you know, she took me
- 17:24through those steps over the year and a half and that was
- 17:29incredible for me. You know, I, I thought that
- 17:32doing the steps was just about reading it and putting myself
- 17:35through that book. But for me, I need another
- 17:37person to literally hold my hand and unpack those steps and to
- 17:43really show me what it means to live one day at a time without
- 17:48picking up a drink and, you know, helping me to discover who
- 17:52I am. Like that's the amazing part of
- 17:54a, A as well for me, it's not picking up a drink and it's
- 17:58discovering who I am. Because I tell you, if I was
- 18:01still drinking, I would be dead not even knowing who I am.
- 18:05I would never have found out who Jade is.
- 18:09I would have died not knowing. Whereas now, you know, I have
- 18:13this amazing opportunity to learn who I am and, and learn
- 18:18the just the beauty of living one day at a time sober.
- 18:21So I went through the steps with that amazing woman and yeah,
- 18:27that's when I truly started to live, you know, not just exist
- 18:30anymore, not one, not rocking from one alcoholic crisis to the
- 18:35next, but actually living and, you know, learning how to be a
- 18:38decent person, learning how to be a, a decent, respectable
- 18:42human being. Learn how to be a better
- 18:44daughter, a better, you know, partner, a better mother, a
- 18:49better mother. Like you know, today I have an
- 18:52amazing relationship with my 4 adult children.
- 18:56Today I'm a grandmother as well. My oldest son has children and
- 19:00you know my grandchildren have never seen me drink and that is
- 19:03such a blessing. This fellowship is incredible.
- 19:09Like I could not have dreamt this big for myself.
- 19:12And I'm not talking about materialistic stuff.
- 19:15I'm talking about spiritual stuff.
- 19:18And I must say too, when I talk about a God, I'm not talking
- 19:21about a religious God. I'm talking about a spiritual
- 19:25loving higher power that keeps me sober one day at a time.
- 19:30It's such a gift. It's such a gift.
- 19:32And to have, you know, peaceful and harmonious relationships, to
- 19:36have a peaceful and harmonious mind and spirit is such a
- 19:41blessing. And I'm not saying I'm like that
- 19:44100% of the time. Like I love it in the book and
- 19:47it says we are not Saints, I am not a St. and I'll never be 1.
- 19:52And I love it when it says progress not perfection.
- 19:55I am not perfect and I never will be perfect but the
- 19:59progress, the learning, the journey, living life, it's such
- 20:04a gift and to be present for it all.
- 20:07You know? Like I can have conversations
- 20:09with my children now and I remember them.
- 20:13You know, and I can be there for them.
- 20:15My children don't have to worry about me anymore.
- 20:18When they worried about me all the time, I can still remember
- 20:22their faces and the look in their eyes of why are you
- 20:25drinking all the time? Why are you doing this?
- 20:28They don't look at me like that now.
- 20:30They've all told me how proud they are of me and I, again, it
- 20:34didn't happen overnight. It took time, but I'm so
- 20:39grateful that I put those days in.
- 20:41I'm so grateful that, you know, I go to meetings and, and, and
- 20:46just allow that time to happen because miracles happen if, if I
- 20:53just keep coming back to meetings and if I keep trying to
- 20:57live those 12 steps to the best of my ability, miracles happen
- 21:02all the time. The higher power God always
- 21:09looks after me. And I'm telling you, I've had
- 21:12experiences where God looks after me in in unexpected ways.
- 21:18Like it's just incredible. I'm a big believer.
- 21:21If I'm on the program and I am trying to the best of my ability
- 21:26to live those steps, I'm always looked after.
- 21:29It's just incredible. I was, I was in so much danger
- 21:34and chaos and turmoil and torture when I drank.
- 21:38I was never, I was never, I never had that feeling of being
- 21:43looked after. But, you know, being on the
- 21:45program and, you know, truly looking after my sobriety and,
- 21:50and surrendering to a higher power, it's, it's just an
- 21:53incredible, incredible experience.
- 21:56And, you know, I really don't even know how it all works.
- 22:00It's, it's something divine. But yeah, for me, as long as I
- 22:05keep coming to a a, as long as I do not pick up a drink, no
- 22:09matter what, as long as I keep practising those steps in my
- 22:14life to the best of my ability, there is always hope.

- 22:26just the best thing ever. So, you know, I hope this share
- 22:31has made some sense to somebody. I didn't want to write anything
- 22:37down. I just sort of wanted to have a,
- 22:39a share that was authentic and real with what I'm feeling
- 22:43today. And yeah, I just want to send a
- 22:46lot of love and light out there to everyone.
- 22:52And I just truly hope that everyone listening finds peace
- 22:56and love in their life and finds sobriety in their life because
