Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome to Get to the Point. I'm your host, and
- 0:01Speaker 1: I got my other host right here, Chris Spencer. This
- 0:04Speaker 1: is Terrell Owens, and we have a special guest. All
- 0:07Speaker 1: our guests are special, but we have Joe Coy in
- 0:10Speaker 1: the building. I'm going to find out a lot about Joe.
- 0:13Speaker 1: You know a lot about him.
- 0:14Speaker 2: I do, like, five years old.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Joe, I want you to tell us a little bit
- 0:18Speaker 1: of something. Give us something that we don't know about you,
- 0:21Speaker 1: because all I know is you're from Vegas.
- 0:22Speaker 2: You have one son. You like to shoot up the
- 0:24Speaker 2: club like I do. You're not athletic.
- 0:28Speaker 3: He is athletic.
- 0:29Speaker 2: We already did some research. We found nothing. Did you
- 0:32Speaker 2: play sports?
- 0:33Speaker 4: I didn't play any sports.
- 0:34Speaker 2: See what I'm talking about? I've done my research on you, Joe.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Not athletic. And maybe you're funny. Maybe you're funny.
- 0:42Speaker 1: But by the end of the show, we will come
- 0:45Speaker 1: to a conclusion with that.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Welcome, Joe.
- 0:58Speaker 4: Thank you. I mean, with that intro, I can only
- 1:02Speaker 4: be happy.
- 1:05Speaker 3: Well, listen, minimum, we know he could dance his ass off, right?
- 1:08Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:09Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:10Speaker 3: But I thought you hooped or something in high school.
- 1:11Speaker 4: No. No. I can play.
- 1:14Speaker 2: Quit trying to make him athletic, Tom.
- 1:16Speaker 3: No, well, stop trying. He always wants to be the
- 1:18Speaker 3: only athlete. You know what's crazy?
- 1:19Speaker 4: If someone like, you know, T.O. says you're not athletic,
- 1:23Speaker 4: you try to accept that.
- 1:25Speaker 5: If it was Dalai Lama, she'd be like, fuck you.
- 1:27Speaker 4: Yeah, but I'm like, I'll beat you. Right. But if
- 1:31Speaker 4: he says you're not athletic.
- 1:33Speaker 3: But he does that. He doesn't realize there's levels to
- 1:35Speaker 3: being an athlete.
- 1:36Speaker 4: Well, yeah.
- 1:37Speaker 3: Yeah, he just so happened to be way up there.
- 1:39Speaker 3: There's some of us down here that are the shit.
- 1:41Speaker 4: Well, that's the only place you can be, Chris, as
- 1:43Speaker 4: far as athletic. I'm helping you. Don't help this motherfucker.
- 1:46Speaker 2: He's just confirming.
- 1:47Speaker 3: Same team.
- 1:48Speaker 4: No, yeah, we are on the same team. That's the
- 1:50Speaker 4: only thing. Exactly, see?
- 1:51Speaker 3: This is Hall of Fame shit. This is different.
- 1:54Speaker 4: When people talk sports with someone that actually plays sports,
- 1:58Speaker 4: it's the most annoying thing to watch. And I don't
- 2:00Speaker 4: know why we keep going to the media to watch that.
- 2:04Speaker 4: I don't care about the guy that's never played his opinion.
- 2:07Speaker 4: And look how he's still in shape. I know.
- 2:10Speaker 3: You can see his abs in a fur coat.
- 2:12Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:13Speaker 4: I can see his chest through this cashmere sweater. Yes.
- 2:17Speaker 3: Okay, Terry Crews.
- 2:19Speaker 4: That's hilarious. So do that. Since you guys are wearing
- 2:22Speaker 4: the same outfit.
- 2:25Speaker 3: We're glad to have you here, man.
- 2:26Speaker 4: Yeah. Thank you. All right.
- 2:27Speaker 3: Listen, I'm sure you're going somewhere around the world this weekend.
- 2:31Speaker 4: Yeah. I'm shooting this thing with Martin Lawrence. Really? It's amazing. Martin...
- 2:38Speaker 4: is producing it, and I'm hosting it, and it's the
- 2:41Speaker 4: most amazing thing.
- 2:42Speaker 3: Is that the thing with the amateur comedians?
- 2:44Speaker 4: Yeah. Oh, talk to us about it. Well, they're not,
- 2:46Speaker 4: you know, it's just, they're comics that haven't had shine yet. Right.
- 2:50Speaker 2: So similar to the Kevin Hart funny AF? Yeah, funny AF.
- 2:53Speaker 4: Yeah. And there's not too many of those, so, you know,
- 2:56Speaker 4: thank God Kevin's doing it.
- 2:58Speaker 1: Right.
- 2:58Speaker 4: The difference between Kevin's and ours is, I told Martin,
- 3:02Speaker 4: I go, I don't want it to be a competition. Right. Like,
- 3:04Speaker 4: let's let everybody shine, because... comedy is subjective. Just because
- 3:10Speaker 4: you're a stand-up comic doesn't mean everyone's gonna like that.
- 3:13Speaker 4: It's like there's country, there's rap, there's rock. Same thing
- 3:17Speaker 4: with stand-up. There's political, there's storytellers, there's puppeteers. So it's
- 3:22Speaker 4: like I wanna give everyone a chance to shine and
- 3:24Speaker 4: Martin agreed. you know, initially he wanted it to be
- 3:28Speaker 4: a competition. Right.
- 3:29Speaker 3: As is everybody.
- 3:29Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 3:30Speaker 5: And I'm like, yeah, but we did that last comic
- 3:32Speaker 5: standing and all those other shows.
- 3:33Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:34Speaker 4: And like, and one thing I had to convince Warren,
- 3:36Speaker 4: I was like, bro, you gave us Def Jam and
- 3:39Speaker 4: you gave us a billion dollars worth of talent.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:43Speaker 4: I mean, Hollywood is still banking off of the talent
- 3:46Speaker 4: that came off of Def Jam. So let's do that.
- 3:48Speaker 4: Let's do, let's give these cats that opportunity to shine.
- 3:53Speaker 4: I still remember Bill Bellamy's set from Def Jam. I
- 3:56Speaker 4: still remember Bernie Mac's set from Def Jam. Even though
- 4:00Speaker 4: he did all this stuff, I still remember Def Jam's set.
- 4:04Speaker 5: Here's a little small known fact. Chris Tucker, that leather
- 4:09Speaker 5: vest he has on.
- 4:10Speaker 4: I love this story.
- 4:11Speaker 3: I told you that, right? That's my vest he's wearing.
- 4:14Speaker 4: Really?
- 4:14Speaker 3: Yes. I had just met him.
- 4:16Speaker 2: Well, you should have kept it because he's funny.
- 4:18Speaker 4: Jesus.
- 4:19Speaker 1: Wow.
- 4:20Speaker 4: What do you say? I don't know what to do.
- 4:22Speaker 4: I can't even protect you. I want to defend you,
- 4:25Speaker 4: but then I'm like.
- 4:26Speaker 3: What's funny is, I was like, we need to get
- 4:27Speaker 3: Brandon Marshall to be my co-host.
- 4:28Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 4:30Speaker 3: Yeah, but nonetheless.
- 4:32Speaker 4: Man, that kind of hurts.
- 4:34Speaker 3: That don't hurt him at all. He loves himself too much.
- 4:37Speaker 3: Only two words hurt.
- 4:39Speaker 4: You?
- 4:39Speaker 5: He's like Brandon Marshall. I thought you were coming with
- 4:43Speaker 5: something a little better than that. I'm judging the Jerry
- 4:45Speaker 5: Rices and Randy Mosses.
- 4:46Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly.
- 4:47Speaker 2: Chris Carter.
- 4:48Speaker 4: Oh, I hate Chris.
- 4:50Speaker 2: I just can't stand him.
- 4:52Speaker 4: What?
- 4:53Speaker 2: Strong dislike.
- 4:54Speaker 4: Wow.
- 4:55Speaker 3: As a person or as a receiver?
- 4:56Speaker 4: Both. Really? Yeah.
- 4:58Speaker 2: Strong dislike.
- 5:00Speaker 3: Huh, let's get a good sound bite. What happened?
- 5:04Speaker 4: No, now.
- 5:04Speaker 2: You want it now?
- 5:05Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 5:06Speaker 3: So then we can have them on the show and
- 5:08Speaker 3: then you guys can make up.
- 5:08Speaker 1: Okay, this is okay. Obviously, I'm playing with San Francisco.
- 5:12Speaker 1: I'm an emerging receiver behind Jerry Rice, J.J.
- 5:15Speaker 2: Stokes. I can't remember if this was the- J.J.
- 5:18Speaker 4: Stokes?
- 5:18Speaker 2: Yeah, I can't remember.
- 5:19Speaker 1: Yeah, UCLA. Yeah, I can't remember if this was the
- 5:23Speaker 1: year that J.J. was hurt, so I played a lot.
- 5:25Speaker 1: So I'm in the playoffs. We go into the playoffs
- 5:28Speaker 1: and we're playing the Vikings. I don't know what round
- 5:32Speaker 1: it was, but we played them.
- 5:34Speaker 2: I go off.
- 5:34Speaker 1: I scored like one or two touchdowns, and we beat
- 5:37Speaker 1: them in the playoffs. So after the game, I go
- 5:39Speaker 1: into the locker room.
- 5:39Speaker 2: I'm undressing.
- 5:41Speaker 1: The reporters are already over into the loser's locker room.
- 5:43Speaker 1: They've already talked to them. So he comes back over
- 5:45Speaker 1: to our locker room, and he's interviewing me. And he
- 5:48Speaker 1: was like, man, I just left the locker room with
- 5:51Speaker 1: the Vikings. And he said, man, did you hear what
- 5:53Speaker 1: Chris Carter said about you?
- 5:54Speaker 2: I'm like, nah.
- 5:56Speaker 1: He said, yeah, Chris Carter basically said that– Their DBs
- 6:00Speaker 1: made a mediocre receiver look like a pro bowler today. Bro,
- 6:06Speaker 1: never forgot it. Never forgot it.
- 6:08Speaker 3: Have you seen him since?
- 6:09Speaker 2: Oh, yes, sir.
- 6:11Speaker 3: Have you said stuff to him?
- 6:11Speaker 2: Oh, yes, sir.
- 6:13Speaker 1: Let me finish my story. So fast forward, that year
- 6:16Speaker 1: I make the Pro Bowl. Back then the Pro Bowl
- 6:19Speaker 1: was over in Hawaii. We stand at the luxurious Ihilani Hotel.
- 6:23Speaker 1: So all the players we go in for this meeting,
- 6:26Speaker 1: you know, all the players come in. And they do
- 6:28Speaker 1: like the little, all the everything. Everybody's filling into the room,
- 6:32Speaker 1: the ballroom. And so I end up just sitting down
- 6:34Speaker 1: and then he end up sitting next to me. And
- 6:38Speaker 1: he started to communicate with me. And I'm like, I'm cool. Like,
- 6:43Speaker 1: why are you even talking to me? I said, remember,
- 6:45Speaker 1: I'm a mediocre receiver, but where am I? I'm right
- 6:48Speaker 1: here with you. So I can't be that mediocre.
- 6:51Speaker 2: So after that, we had our little words. I haven't
- 6:53Speaker 2: said anything to him since. And here I am.
- 6:56Speaker 4: Here I am.
- 6:56Speaker 3: I'm surprised for you.
- 6:57Speaker 2: So here I am.
- 6:58Speaker 4: Chris! Chris!
- 6:59Speaker 2: Come on in.
- 7:00Speaker 4: I drove him. That's why I'm late.
- 7:01Speaker 2: Yeah, come on in. Come on in.
- 7:02Speaker 4: Chris!
- 7:03Speaker 1: And granted, like, I'm a Hall of Fame receiver. Eclipse,
- 7:09Speaker 1: all his stats, this and that and the other. And
- 7:11Speaker 1: like I said, that was early on in my career,
- 7:13Speaker 1: but I always remembered it. It was another one, too,
- 7:15Speaker 1: over in the Bay Area, that wore number 81 with
- 7:17Speaker 1: the Oakland Raiders, Tim Brown. He had some little snippy
- 7:20Speaker 1: stuff to say about me, too.
- 7:23Speaker 2: I let him know, too.
- 7:24Speaker 3: Nonetheless, Chris Tucker wore my vest on Def Jam.
- 7:27Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:27Speaker 3: But fuck that.
- 7:28Speaker 2: That's just short.
- 7:28Speaker 3: This is not a sports show.
- 7:31Speaker 4: Can I jump on that and elaborate? Is it because
- 7:37Speaker 4: they hated the fact that you were so, and I'm
- 7:39Speaker 4: not doing this because I'm on your pod. Is it
- 7:42Speaker 4: because you were doing some pretty superhero shit and they
- 7:47Speaker 4: never did that? Because I still remember you ripping your ankle,
- 7:52Speaker 4: wasn't it the ankle?
- 7:53Speaker 2: Yeah, tore my ankle.
- 7:54Speaker 4: And what you did with Philly, it was things that
- 7:59Speaker 4: we've never seen before. Seriously, what is this man doing
- 8:02Speaker 4: right now? And it's like, do you think it's because
- 8:05Speaker 4: who you're saying is Tim Brown and Chris Carter? It's like,
- 8:09Speaker 4: I don't recall them doing superhero shit like that.
- 8:12Speaker 1: And the Tim Brown thing is because look in the
- 8:14Speaker 1: Bay Area, you had some dynamic receivers in that Bay Area.
- 8:17Speaker 1: Bay Area so it was almost like the battle of
- 8:19Speaker 1: receivers but not but not really he wore 81 I
- 8:22Speaker 1: wore 81 yeah and then I was the emerging receiver
- 8:25Speaker 1: like I started to like really just kind of really
- 8:28Speaker 1: burst onto the scene yeah and then like I said
- 8:30Speaker 1: when I was scoring the tell the touchdown celebration then
- 8:33Speaker 1: it was making SportsCenter every weekend and I guess it
- 8:36Speaker 1: was just maybe overshadowing things that he was doing but
- 8:39Speaker 1: I never paid any attention to what the Raiders were
- 8:40Speaker 1: doing but I was making SportsCenter pretty much every weekend.
- 8:44Speaker 1: And so maybe it got under his skin, but they
- 8:46Speaker 1: had some negative things to say in the newspaper and
- 8:49Speaker 1: things like that.
- 8:49Speaker 2: And I got wind of it.
- 8:51Speaker 1: But I mean, I've never been a person to hate
- 8:53Speaker 1: on anybody because I knew how I got to where
- 8:55Speaker 1: I got.
- 8:56Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 8:56Speaker 1: I wasn't known as the speedy, fast receiver, great hands,
- 9:00Speaker 1: didn't go to a power five school. There was a
- 9:03Speaker 1: lot of uncommon things that I did that they didn't
- 9:07Speaker 1: possess that I brought to the table. And I became T.O.,
- 9:11Speaker 1: right in front of, you know, right.
- 9:12Speaker 2: Up under their noses.
- 9:13Speaker 3: Well, let's talk about your rise. Right, exactly.
- 9:15Speaker 2: I mean, that's a good segue.
- 9:16Speaker 3: Did you have.
- 9:16Speaker 5: Adversity like that with people saying he's not funny? Or
- 9:19Speaker 5: he shouldn't be on this show? Or why are you
- 9:23Speaker 5: paying him that much?
- 9:25Speaker 4: You know, I don't even know how to say this
- 9:27Speaker 4: because we came in a different time. So, like, to
- 9:29Speaker 4: explain this to the newer generation is kind of like
- 9:32Speaker 4: talking to a wall. They're not going to understand this.
- 9:34Speaker 3: No, but explain it to them. That's a whole different
- 9:37Speaker 3: way you came up.
- 9:37Speaker 4: Well, okay, because racism was huge, right?
- 9:41Speaker 2: So don't say it was it's still I mean it
- 9:43Speaker 2: still is but it.
- 9:44Speaker 4: Was blatantly bad when we came up like he you.
- 9:47Speaker 7: Know everyone knows that Chris Chris hosted one of the
- 9:50Speaker 7: greatest shows of all time which was called Chocolate Sunday
- 9:53Speaker 7: like understand the definition of that word Chocolate Sunday it's
- 9:57Speaker 7: a black night on the Sunday night why is it
- 9:59Speaker 7: a Sunday night?
- 10:00Speaker 4: Because that's the night that they can't sell tickets. That's
- 10:03Speaker 4: the night that usually the comedy club turns off the lights.
- 10:06Speaker 4: So you know what? Since there's a demand for black comics,
- 10:10Speaker 4: but we don't want to put them on the white nights,
- 10:11Speaker 4: which was the Friday and the Saturday shows, which is
- 10:13Speaker 4: the prime show, which was always stacked with white comics,
- 10:17Speaker 4: Let's go ahead and turn on the lights on Sunday
- 10:19Speaker 4: and give it to the black guys. And that was
- 10:21Speaker 4: called Chocolate Sunday. Let's start it off with some free
- 10:24Speaker 4: tickets because, you know, they won't pay. End up getting
- 10:28Speaker 4: two shows on a fucking Sunday lying down the street
- 10:31Speaker 4: and still fucking turning out the biggest comics that are
- 10:35Speaker 4: still to this day making the most money for Hollywood.
- 10:39Speaker 4: But still doesn't get the shine or the glory or
- 10:41Speaker 4: the recognition that of what happened. I mean, Kevin Hart
- 10:45Speaker 4: blew up because of Chocolate Sundae. He didn't blow up
- 10:48Speaker 4: on Friday and Saturday, but no one's gonna talk about that.
- 10:50Speaker 4: You know what I mean? So like, that's my generation. Like,
- 10:53Speaker 4: trying to explain that now, everyone's like, oh.
- 10:55Speaker 3: But we're all the same.
- 10:56Speaker 4: It's like, no, man, we weren't all the same. If
- 10:58Speaker 4: you talked about your family, just for half a second,
- 11:05Speaker 4: the immediate response was like, hey, that's too specific. hey,
- 11:11Speaker 4: I don't think they're gonna understand. Look who's sitting in
- 11:14Speaker 4: the audience. We don't know what chicken is. What are chopsticks?
- 11:21Speaker 4: I'm doing a very blatant stereotype, but that's how they
- 11:26Speaker 4: were perceiving us just telling our story. And if you
- 11:28Speaker 4: just tell your story and listen, then everyone relates. Has
- 11:32Speaker 4: no difference between a black mom and a white mom.
- 11:35Speaker 4: Broke has no color. Broke is broke, and you're gonna
- 11:38Speaker 4: raise your kid Broke. So that was the struggle. So anyway,
- 11:43Speaker 4: you asked me what my struggle is. It's like, here
- 11:46Speaker 4: I am trying to find a way to tell my
- 11:49Speaker 4: story that my mom is Filipino and let you know
- 11:52Speaker 4: that I'm Filipino, but I don't want to go up
- 11:53Speaker 4: there going, and Filipinos do this. And Filipinos run like this.
- 11:58Speaker 4: I wasn't doing that. I was just telling a story
- 12:01Speaker 4: about my mom. My sister's getting kicked out of the house.
- 12:03Speaker 4: My mom's Filipino. She's single. This is how she handled it.
- 12:07Speaker 4: And then finally it caught up. People were like, oh,
- 12:09Speaker 4: my mom does the same shit. But to get into
- 12:12Speaker 4: those rooms, Tio, it was so fucking hard. And that's
- 12:15Speaker 4: why I love Chris so much because every time I
- 12:18Speaker 4: walked in on Chocolate Sundays, if I just walked in,
- 12:21Speaker 4: I was never even on the show. I would just
- 12:23Speaker 4: be up against the wall because I couldn't wait because
- 12:25Speaker 4: I was like, yo, I heard cats coming. I swear
- 12:28Speaker 4: to God, I heard cats coming. So I just like you,
- 12:31Speaker 4: cat was like a God. If he showed up, you
- 12:33Speaker 4: wanted to be there. So, you know, this is before
- 12:35Speaker 4: the internet. So you just heard word him out. Yo,
- 12:37Speaker 4: I hear a cat's going to chocolate sundae. I'll be,
- 12:39Speaker 4: I'll be on the wall. And then Chris would see me.
- 12:41Speaker 4: He's like, you ready for five? And he would always
- 12:43Speaker 4: put me up. Guarantee, bro. One time I heard Eddie
- 12:46Speaker 4: Murphy was coming. It was Eddie. I was there that night.
- 12:50Speaker 3: This is crazy.
- 12:52Speaker 4: One night I heard Eddie's walking around, right? And he's
- 12:55Speaker 4: going to show up at Chocolate Sunday. So I show
- 12:58Speaker 4: up at Chocolate Sunday. I forgot who told me. And
- 13:00Speaker 4: then Eddie shows up, right? And then Chris Tucker shows up.
- 13:06Speaker 4: Cat Williams shows up. And Dave Chappelle shows up. All
- 13:11Speaker 4: of them are on TMZ right now. Dave's supposed to
- 13:14Speaker 4: be in Africa because he's crazy. That's what the media said.
- 13:18Speaker 4: Chris Tucker was in a lawsuit for something. You remember that?
- 13:22Speaker 4: Chris was in a lawsuit for something. He's not paying
- 13:24Speaker 4: his taxes. Was it that? And then Cat got into...
- 13:28Speaker 4: Pick one. Yeah. All of them were on the news
- 13:31Speaker 4: at this point.
- 13:31Speaker 1: Wow.
- 13:32Speaker 4: And they were all there at Chocolate Sundaes. And Chris
- 13:36Speaker 4: was hosting.
- 13:37Speaker 2: And they all had something of yours. They was wearing
- 13:40Speaker 2: something of yours.
- 13:40Speaker 3: No, just Chris Tucker the best.
- 13:42Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah. But that was the struggles that I had
- 13:46Speaker 4: to go through because I was never found an opportunity.
- 13:48Speaker 4: And I always, when I started stand-up, black comedy... embraced
- 13:53Speaker 4: me so fast. Like I was part of the black
- 13:56Speaker 4: college comedy tour. That's why I know Michael Blackson. Cause
- 13:59Speaker 4: he used to wear dashiki. I used to, that's why
- 14:01Speaker 4: I know JB smooth. And that's why I was with
- 14:03Speaker 4: Ian Edwards. Like I came up, I used to open
- 14:05Speaker 4: for some more and Mike Epps and like, I can't,
- 14:09Speaker 4: that's back in the nineties. So like I have, I
- 14:13Speaker 4: have like this high praise for black comedy.
- 14:15Speaker 3: Well, your flavor is kind of like us.
- 14:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 14:19Speaker 5: So, and, and, and, and I might bastardize this or
- 14:22Speaker 5: say it wrong, but the Filipino culture, the Philippines were
- 14:28Speaker 5: invaded by the Moors, correct?
- 14:30Speaker 4: They were invaded by everybody. No one's more colonized than Philippines.
- 14:34Speaker 3: So a lot of Filipinos have African in them.
- 14:37Speaker 4: A lot of them. And I'm not even... Bro. There
- 14:41Speaker 4: are black Filipinos. There's an island where they have afros
- 14:45Speaker 4: in their dark skin.
- 14:45Speaker 3: I've seen the flat noses, nappy hair.
- 14:47Speaker 4: They got it all.
- 14:48Speaker 3: And so... It's almost like- And can dress.
- 14:52Speaker 6: Yes.
- 14:52Speaker 4: Bro, and can dress.
- 14:53Speaker 3: You can dress your ass off.
- 14:54Speaker 4: I'm very good.
- 14:55Speaker 1: Yes.
- 14:56Speaker 4: I'm very good.
- 14:56Speaker 2: Just not today.
- 14:57Speaker 4: I almost wore green.
- 14:58Speaker 2: Just not today.
- 14:59Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 14:59Speaker 3: No, that's fucking fancy. Yeah. No, look, it might look cheap.
- 15:03Speaker 3: That shit cost.
- 15:04Speaker 2: $ 7, 000.
- 15:05Speaker 4: Right. It's $ 7, 000.
- 15:06Speaker 3: You got to see the shit he wears in his specials.
- 15:08Speaker 3: I'm like, where the fuck did he get that?
- 15:10Speaker 1: So Joe, what has it been like? You talk about, obviously,
- 15:13Speaker 1: you mentioned the genres of comedy. Your thing is storytelling.
- 15:18Speaker 3: Exactly, yes.
- 15:20Speaker 1: What has it been like? Because you mentioned chocolate sundaes
- 15:23Speaker 1: and you educated everybody.
- 15:24Speaker 2: A lot of people don't know that.
- 15:26Speaker 3: It got worse than that, T.O.
- 15:27Speaker 4: There's worse than, there's like, it got so bad that
- 15:31Speaker 4: like there were other ethnicities that wanted shine and they
- 15:35Speaker 4: weren't getting it. So they had to create these off. Right.
- 15:38Speaker 4: nights that were the nights where the comedy club would
- 15:41Speaker 4: turn off the lights because no one's coming. They were
- 15:44Speaker 4: called free ticket nights. Local Wednesdays. Oh, refried Fridays. That's Mexican.
- 15:51Speaker 2: Asian invasions. Yes.
- 15:54Speaker 3: What was the one that I met and they even
- 15:55Speaker 3: made a tour? It was like the.
- 15:59Speaker 4: Fortune, like, I don't know, man. Fortune Cookie Friday. Like,
- 16:03Speaker 4: it was so bad.
- 16:04Speaker 2: Yes.
- 16:04Speaker 3: We're the bomb.
- 16:05Speaker 4: And I'm not making this up. We're the bomb.
- 16:06Speaker 3: And it'd be all Middle Eastern comics.
- 16:08Speaker 4: Mo' Better Mondays.
- 16:09Speaker 3: Mo' Better Mondays.
- 16:10Speaker 4: We the bomb show. For real.
- 16:12Speaker 1: Yes.
- 16:12Speaker 4: Mo' Better Mondays. Tuesdays. Tuesdays, bro.
- 16:15Speaker 3: There's nothing like that Tuesdays. Wipe down Wednesdays. Crack them
- 16:18Speaker 3: up Thursdays. We had to... Great.
- 16:21Speaker 4: Great. We had to create. They wouldn't let you in. And.
- 16:24Speaker 5: And the people that worked on those nights wouldn't get
- 16:28Speaker 5: spots on the other nights during the week.
- 16:29Speaker 4: At all.
- 16:30Speaker 5: I remember one time Red Grant was there at the
- 16:32Speaker 5: comedy store. This motherfucker is hosting Trippin' on Tuesdays. He's
- 16:36Speaker 5: a big name in the black community. And he went
- 16:39Speaker 5: to go park in the back because he was coming
- 16:41Speaker 5: to visit or pick up a check.
- 16:43Speaker 3: And they kicked him out.
- 16:44Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 16:44Speaker 3: He's like, I work here. He goes, yeah, not tonight.
- 16:47Speaker 2: Not tonight?
- 16:48Speaker 3: Not tonight, Red.
- 16:50Speaker 4: Jeez. Guy Torey's Fat Tuesdays, no one turned out more
- 16:54Speaker 4: shows than that. No one made more money for a
- 16:56Speaker 4: comedy store than Fat Tuesdays. And then if you look
- 16:59Speaker 4: at all the names that are written on that door,
- 17:03Speaker 4: And by the way, they had to campaign for that,
- 17:05Speaker 4: by the way, which was even crazier, that they had
- 17:07Speaker 4: to ask somebody to get these names, like a J.B.
- 17:10Speaker 4: Smooth and a Steve Harvey.
- 17:11Speaker 5: So for those of you who don't know, on the
- 17:12Speaker 5: Comedy Store on Sunset, they have names of famous, Richard Pryor,
- 17:17Speaker 5: Sam Kidderson.
- 17:18Speaker 4: Dice Clay.
- 17:18Speaker 2: Everybody signs the wall.
- 17:19Speaker 3: And so what he's telling you is, you remember Guy
- 17:21Speaker 3: T had Fat Tuesday?
- 17:22Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, Guy T. They had to petition. They had
- 17:24Speaker 4: to petition for those names.
- 17:25Speaker 5: He shot a special on... eight-part series, six-part series on
- 17:30Speaker 5: Fat Tuesdays. And then they had to petition to get
- 17:32Speaker 5: these people who carried the Comedy Store. Comedy Store was
- 17:37Speaker 5: dark almost every other night. Because of Tuesdays, it saved
- 17:40Speaker 5: the Comedy Store. And they had to petition to get
- 17:43Speaker 5: these people's names on the wall.
- 17:44Speaker 4: And you gotta remember, Tuesday is a night where they
- 17:46Speaker 4: turn off, like, the entire town's closed on Tuesday. And
- 17:50Speaker 4: this guy had two lines going. He had an 8
- 17:53Speaker 4: o'clock and a 10, and then sometimes a 12. And
- 17:55Speaker 4: it was It would generate so much revenue.
- 18:00Speaker 3: Save the coffee store.
- 18:02Speaker 4: I didn't understand why they had to petition for these
- 18:04Speaker 4: names to get them on that wall, which is crazy.
- 18:07Speaker 4: By the way, I'm on that wall. Yes. We don't
- 18:09Speaker 4: have a petition.
- 18:10Speaker 2: Man, so, yeah.
- 18:11Speaker 1: I mean, just what is it like going from, like,
- 18:14Speaker 1: the small rooms to now the big stages?
- 18:18Speaker 3: Not even stages. This motherfucker is at the sofa.
- 18:21Speaker 2: But, I mean, yeah, I mean, what is it like?
- 18:23Speaker 4: That was crazy.
- 18:24Speaker 3: I cried when I saw you at the forum, by
- 18:25Speaker 3: the way.
- 18:26Speaker 4: Oh, thank you.
- 18:26Speaker 1: Yeah, because, I mean, just listening to this, I mean,
- 18:28Speaker 1: understanding your journey, I try to kind of, you know,
- 18:32Speaker 1: create some similarities, obviously, make it somewhat synonymous with football. Like,
- 18:38Speaker 1: starting from the bottom, you know what I mean? You know,
- 18:40Speaker 1: maybe a kid going to JUCO and going to college
- 18:43Speaker 1: or maybe not getting to the NFL right away, going
- 18:46Speaker 1: to the CFL now.
- 18:47Speaker 2: You know, they're taking a different route and then actually
- 18:49Speaker 2: making it. to big time.
- 18:51Speaker 4: It's kind of like, yeah, it sucks, man. I know
- 18:56Speaker 4: you say it sucks. There was a time when I
- 18:58Speaker 4: wanted to quit. I wanted to quit in 2015 because
- 19:00Speaker 4: for some reason no one was offering me an hour special,
- 19:03Speaker 4: but yet I have plaques on the walls at the
- 19:06Speaker 4: improv with the most sold out shows, but yet my
- 19:09Speaker 4: openers were getting deals with Comedy Central for a special.
- 19:13Speaker 4: They were opening for me. I'm not going to say names,
- 19:15Speaker 4: but I'm just like, it would crush me because I
- 19:18Speaker 4: had to play the guy like, hey, congratulations, man, because
- 19:21Speaker 4: I'm still playing the game. Right, right. But I'm not
- 19:24Speaker 4: understanding why I'm not getting signed. And then all of
- 19:28Speaker 4: a sudden, you know, Netflix.
- 19:30Speaker 3: Wait, wait, tell them how it happened.
- 19:32Speaker 4: Yeah, they.
- 19:33Speaker 3: You shot your own shit first.
- 19:36Speaker 4: Well, no, they said no to me first.
- 19:38Speaker 3: I said no to you, okay.
- 19:39Speaker 4: So they didn't give me the deal. So then I
- 19:41Speaker 4: just said, screw it. I went and shot it. I
- 19:43Speaker 4: just was like, you know what? I got the money.
- 19:46Speaker 4: I'll shoot it. Why am I waiting? So I shot
- 19:48Speaker 4: the special. And then we still get a phone call
- 19:50Speaker 4: from Netflix and they're like hey we hear you're shooting
- 19:53Speaker 4: it we just want you to know we really don't
- 19:55Speaker 4: want it while I was shooting it This is a
- 19:59Speaker 4: true story. And then, uh, and then we cut it up. Yeah, seriously.
- 20:03Speaker 4: And then we cut it up. And, uh, and I,
- 20:05Speaker 4: I knew I had, I knew this special was called
- 20:07Speaker 4: live from Seattle.
- 20:08Speaker 3: It's fucking special.
- 20:09Speaker 4: And by the way, I don't like, I'm not hating
- 20:12Speaker 4: on Netflix. They made a business decision and they're supposed
- 20:14Speaker 4: to like, that's a huge investment to put into somebody
- 20:17Speaker 4: and they're not sure. So I was like, whatever. I
- 20:19Speaker 4: just need to prove to you that I deserve to
- 20:21Speaker 4: be on this network. So no shade on Netflix. I
- 20:23Speaker 4: just had to work a little harder. And then when I,
- 20:26Speaker 4: when I finally shot it, I, I knew I had it. Like,
- 20:29Speaker 4: I was like, this is like live from Seattle was hot.
- 20:31Speaker 4: Like this, this is my, my grail. And, uh, and
- 20:35Speaker 4: I turned it in and I, they called me in
- 20:36Speaker 4: 30 minutes. So like, let's make an offer. You had
- 20:38Speaker 4: to create a, uh.
- 20:39Speaker 2: Sit ups in the driveway moment.
- 20:42Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 20:43Speaker 3: It was your, it was your Rocky.
- 20:44Speaker 4: Yeah, man. Cause I wanted to quit. Cause at that
- 20:48Speaker 4: age I was like, I was like almost 50 at
- 20:50Speaker 4: that point. I think it was like 46. I'm like, Yo,
- 20:53Speaker 4: why am I even trying? I'll just keep doing the improvs.
- 20:55Speaker 4: I'm done. I'm not going to even try and get
- 20:57Speaker 4: a special. I'll just do the improvs.
- 20:58Speaker 5: What's crazy is that this motherfucker was selling out clubs
- 21:00Speaker 5: across the country.
- 21:02Speaker 3: He'd walk in town.
- 21:03Speaker 5: He never really performs in town, but if he said
- 21:05Speaker 5: Joe Coy was in town, lines around the block.
- 21:08Speaker 3: And so it just made no sense.
- 21:11Speaker 1: But it's typical of Hollywood. It's not like sometimes not
- 21:15Speaker 1: what you do, how you do it. Sometimes it's all
- 21:17Speaker 1: about who you know, right?
- 21:18Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 21:19Speaker 2: But that's typical of Hollywood. You know what I mean?
- 21:21Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 21:21Speaker 2: And in business in general.
- 21:23Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 21:24Speaker 1: Even in football, I mean, you have guys, I mean,
- 21:26Speaker 1: I felt like I should have gotten some more opportunities
- 21:29Speaker 1: toward the end of my career that I didn't. And
- 21:31Speaker 1: I look back and I see guys getting an opportunity.
- 21:33Speaker 4: I'm like, well. I really feel sorry for football players.
- 21:36Speaker 2: Bro, it's brutal.
- 21:37Speaker 4: I hate watching how they treat you and mishandle you guys.
- 21:40Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 21:41Speaker 4: I think football, and I hate saying this to you
- 21:44Speaker 4: because you're a legend, but like, The way they treat
- 21:48Speaker 4: you guys is, it's like, can I say it?
- 21:51Speaker 3: Yeah. Can I say slavery?
- 21:54Speaker 2: Bro, it's no, because we have no.
- 21:55Speaker 4: Because I really feel like they treat you guys like items.
- 22:01Speaker 2: Union is weak. The union is weak.
- 22:03Speaker 4: But to sit there and act like you guys aren't
- 22:06Speaker 4: making billions of dollars every weekend.
- 22:09Speaker 1: Boy.
- 22:09Speaker 4: And put the caps on. You know what I'm saying?
- 22:13Speaker 4: And then you see somebody in baseball making $ 700 million. Guaranteed.
- 22:18Speaker 4: And I'm like, okay, I get it. Yo, you guys
- 22:20Speaker 4: have whatever your justification is, but you can't sit there
- 22:25Speaker 4: and tell me that the biggest game on earth isn't football.
- 22:29Speaker 4: You're not going to sit me and tell me that
- 22:31Speaker 4: the playoffs don't generate billions of dollars. And you guys
- 22:35Speaker 4: got to fight every week for your paycheck? It's crazy.
- 22:39Speaker 2: Number one, we have a weak union players association.
- 22:42Speaker 1: And even the guys that head off, they have a guy.
- 22:48Speaker 2: In every team.
- 22:49Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 22:49Speaker 2: That's the head of like.
- 22:51Speaker 3: He's the representative for the team.
- 22:52Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 22:53Speaker 2: Those guys are doing a poor job.
- 22:55Speaker 4: Yeah. Obviously.
- 22:56Speaker 2: Because what you just said, they know and they understand that.
- 22:59Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 23:00Speaker 2: The union is weak in itself.
- 23:03Speaker 1: And the ownership, just the NFL in itself, they have
- 23:05Speaker 1: these players thinking that we need them.
- 23:08Speaker 2: They need us.
- 23:09Speaker 4: 100%. What you did in Philly should have been at
- 23:14Speaker 4: the end of that game, the owner should have been like, yo,
- 23:17Speaker 4: here's a $ 3 million bonus. Because one, you got eyes
- 23:21Speaker 4: on the goddamn game. Everyone wanted to see you play.
- 23:24Speaker 4: Because we all knew you were hurt. We all knew
- 23:27Speaker 4: you were coming back too early. And then the way
- 23:29Speaker 4: you played that game was fucking crazy.
- 23:32Speaker 2: I appreciate it.
- 23:33Speaker 4: Like, crazy. Like, get someone that's healthy to play the
- 23:36Speaker 4: way you played that game. Insane, bro. Like, they should
- 23:39Speaker 4: have been like, my guy here, and you know what?
- 23:42Speaker 4: Please retire here. We want you here. Like, you put
- 23:45Speaker 4: your blood on the field for us. Like, that's crazy, man.
- 23:49Speaker 4: But I hate to talk. No, you're going to talk.
- 23:53Speaker 4: I almost felt like you did it because.
- 23:57Speaker 4: Because of the mentality that they set on you guys. Like,
- 24:00Speaker 4: if I don't play, I might lose my job. And
- 24:03Speaker 4: they instill it. I know you're a fighter. Like, that's obvious.
- 24:07Speaker 4: But what I'm saying is there's got to be that
- 24:09Speaker 4: burning thing. Like, motherfucker, I got to get out there.
- 24:11Speaker 4: Because if I don't, this could be it for me
- 24:14Speaker 4: in football. Like, and they do that shit. Yeah.
- 24:16Speaker 1: No, I didn't really have that thought process. I just
- 24:19Speaker 1: knew that if I didn't play in that Super Bowl.
- 24:22Speaker 4: This is done.
- 24:23Speaker 1: No.
- 24:24Speaker 2: I mean, I'd never have an opportunity to play in
- 24:26Speaker 2: a Super Bowl again.
- 24:26Speaker 4: Yeah. Right.
- 24:27Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 24:28Speaker 2: And that was my only Super Bowl I ever played in.
- 24:30Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 24:31Speaker 1: So then on top of that, I mean, I'm from
- 24:34Speaker 1: the South, raised in the church. I'm big on faith.
- 24:37Speaker 1: And I knew that with God, all things are possible.
- 24:41Speaker 1: And the way that I took care of my body,
- 24:42Speaker 1: this is year nine for me. I knew that I
- 24:45Speaker 1: could overcome and put my body through the ringer to
- 24:48Speaker 1: be able to play in record time, six and a half,
- 24:51Speaker 1: seven weeks with the injury that sustained.
- 24:53Speaker 3: That was crazy.
- 24:54Speaker 1: I knew I could get back on the field. And like, again,
- 24:56Speaker 1: the The game, Super Bowl was like the longest game
- 24:59Speaker 1: of the year. And dude, it felt like a regular season.
- 25:02Speaker 1: It went by so fast. So fast, it was a blur. Wow.

- 26:18Speaker 3: I want to talk about early Joe Croy. I love
- 26:20Speaker 3: what you drove up in today. Fantastic car. You've got
- 26:26Speaker 3: to see this motherfucking car. But I remember when you
- 26:28Speaker 3: didn't have cars like that.
- 26:29Speaker 4: No, I didn't.
- 26:29Speaker 3: Let's talk about that struggle.
- 26:31Speaker 5: Did you start off doing stand-up in Los Angeles?
- 26:35Speaker 4: Vegas.
- 26:36Speaker 3: Vegas?
- 26:36Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 26:37Speaker 5: Now, where would you open for big stars that would
- 26:40Speaker 5: come to town? Because there's not like a comedy store
- 26:43Speaker 5: type showcase.
- 26:44Speaker 4: Yeah, so comedy clubs there, I would call all the time.
- 26:46Speaker 4: You remember Steve Chirippa? Of course, the Riviera. So he
- 26:50Speaker 4: was at the Riviera. But he became famous on... But
- 26:54Speaker 4: what was the? Sopranos. Sopranos. Yes.
- 26:56Speaker 3: I was blown away because I didn't know he was
- 26:57Speaker 3: an actor.
- 26:58Speaker 4: Yeah. I don't think he knew he was an actor.
- 27:00Speaker 1: Right.
- 27:00Speaker 4: And then he just became massive. But what was crazy
- 27:03Speaker 4: is I would literally call right out of high school.
- 27:06Speaker 4: It was like 1989. I would call the Riviera because
- 27:08Speaker 4: he was the only club manager that would pick up.
- 27:11Speaker 4: I would call and make up names. And I'm like, yeah,
- 27:14Speaker 4: I do stand up. Is there any way I could
- 27:16Speaker 4: just warm up the crowd before the show starts? No way. Yeah, buddy, yeah,
- 27:22Speaker 4: you need to get a tape. This is like after
- 27:24Speaker 4: the fifth time I called him, right? He goes, hey, buddy, yeah,
- 27:28Speaker 4: you need to get a tape.
- 27:29Speaker 3: Sounded just like him.
- 27:29Speaker 4: Yeah, you need to go to L.A., work the clubs there.
- 27:34Speaker 4: Then you get a TV set, and then you submit that.
- 27:38Speaker 4: And that's the proper way to get into a comic club,
- 27:40Speaker 4: all right? It's the last time I'm going to pick
- 27:41Speaker 4: up the call.
- 27:42Speaker 3: Oh, he knew it was you all those times?
- 27:43Speaker 4: Yeah, oh, every time. He knew it was me every time.
- 27:46Speaker 1: Right.
- 27:46Speaker 4: So I couldn't go to LA cause I'm broke. You
- 27:49Speaker 4: know what I mean? I'm working. Yeah. I'm just a kid.
- 27:52Speaker 4: So it just started getting to the point where I was, uh, uh,
- 27:55Speaker 4: renting out rooms. Like I would rent out like a,
- 27:58Speaker 4: a small club and then I sell tickets myself. 17, 16, 18, 19. Yeah.
- 28:05Speaker 4: And then it got to the point where it was
- 28:06Speaker 4: like really big. Like, uh, I was like renting out
- 28:10Speaker 4: massive theaters and, and, uh, I got, somehow I met, uh, God,
- 28:15Speaker 4: how did I do this? I'm jumping. But what happened
- 28:19Speaker 4: was there's this huge convention called the Magic Convention, which
- 28:24Speaker 4: is the men's apparel, right? Okay, so this is back
- 28:27Speaker 4: in the 90s, right? I'm in love with black... uh, everything,
- 28:32Speaker 4: anything black. Yeah. You know, if a black guy is
- 28:35Speaker 4: wearing it, I want that. Right. And this is before
- 28:37Speaker 4: the internet. Right. So Biggie had the, the Dada Scully on.
- 28:41Speaker 4: Remember the, the little tiny brim and tight on the head.
- 28:44Speaker 4: LL wore it, but Biggie wore it.
- 28:45Speaker 1: Yes.
- 28:46Speaker 4: And I want this Dada hat. And I'm looking at
- 28:48Speaker 4: the back of vibe magazine. You know what I mean?
- 28:50Speaker 4: And they have like an ad and it's like, Oh,
- 28:51Speaker 4: here's the store you can buy it at. It's in,
- 28:53Speaker 4: it's in Harlem. Right. But I'm in Vegas. So there's
- 28:56Speaker 4: no way you're going to get this shit. So I'm
- 28:58Speaker 4: working at a hotel front desk and, It's called Alexis Park.
- 29:02Speaker 4: And I look at my check-in list late, right? And
- 29:06Speaker 4: it says Dada Supreme. And I'm like, no, this is
- 29:09Speaker 4: not happening. Like, they're checking in, right?
- 29:13Speaker 1: Wow.
- 29:14Speaker 4: They're checking in with cash, no credit card, right? So
- 29:17Speaker 4: it's this crazy thing where they have to put a
- 29:19Speaker 4: $ 2, 000 deposit on each room and pay for the whole week, right?
- 29:23Speaker 4: How many people? Oh my God, about 10. I mean,
- 29:26Speaker 4: this guy dropped like 30 grand just to hold these rooms, right?
- 29:29Speaker 4: No credit card, right? Like this, right? They were doing
- 29:32Speaker 4: it like that, right? And he walks up, young black guy, man.
- 29:35Speaker 4: He must have been like 28 years old, right? And
- 29:37Speaker 4: he just walks up and he's paying. And I'm just
- 29:39Speaker 4: checking it and I'm holding it in and I'm just looking.
- 29:42Speaker 4: I'm like, how's it feel to work for Dada, man?
- 29:45Speaker 4: By the way, I got to also explain this to
- 29:47Speaker 4: everyone at home, all the young cats. This was the
- 29:50Speaker 4: inception of black culture. Clothing. Like black culture finally. Cross colors. EJ. Yeah, Mecca.
- 30:03Speaker 4: And now white is looking at black, right? Now you
- 30:08Speaker 4: got Polo and Tommy Hilfiger like, oh, so street is
- 30:12Speaker 4: a thing. Oh, okay.
- 30:14Speaker 3: Make our stuff a little looser.
- 30:15Speaker 4: Yeah, oh, we should have signed leaders of the new
- 30:20Speaker 4: school since they were wearing... tommy hill figure in the
- 30:23Speaker 4: video but we didn't want them to wear it because
- 30:25Speaker 4: that's not our demo oh so you guys went made
- 30:27Speaker 4: your own clothing and now you fucking now you're beating
- 30:30Speaker 4: us right oh okay but we won't talk about that
- 30:34Speaker 4: uh so now i'm just like you know i'm just
- 30:36Speaker 4: kid just looking i'm like yo how's it work how's
- 30:38Speaker 4: it feel to work for dada man it's crazy and
- 30:41Speaker 4: he's like oh it's it's amazing it's amazing man like
- 30:44Speaker 4: it's a it's a young company he's so dope man
- 30:47Speaker 4: he's like it's a young company man but uh It's blah, blah, blah.
- 30:51Speaker 4: I go, that's crazy, man. And I go, is the
- 30:55Speaker 4: owner cool? I go like that. Is he really cool, man?
- 30:58Speaker 4: And he goes, I own it.
- 31:00Speaker 3: I go, what the fuck?
- 31:01Speaker 4: Bro, I've never seen anything like this. Imagine seeing a
- 31:05Speaker 4: young black man saying he owns a company that Big
- 31:09Speaker 4: E's wearing your shit. And I'm like, how'd you do this?
- 31:12Speaker 4: He goes, me and my cousin were working for I
- 31:16Speaker 4: forgot the name of the company. I'll just say Pan
- 31:19Speaker 4: Am or something. He was a baggage guy throwing bags
- 31:23Speaker 4: onto a plane. And he goes, I just drew this hat.
- 31:27Speaker 4: Like I was just writing on it on a Post-it.
- 31:30Speaker 4: And I show my cousin and we're like, yo, we
- 31:32Speaker 4: can make this hat. So we saved up our money.
- 31:35Speaker 4: I guess they were going to college and I think
- 31:36Speaker 4: they took a loan out, like a college loan. Don't
- 31:38Speaker 4: quote me on it. And we had the hat made.
- 31:44Speaker 4: And I go, so what'd you guys do?
- 31:45Speaker 3: So the hat was the first thing they did.
- 31:46Speaker 4: They made the hat, right? And you got to see,
- 31:48Speaker 4: it was the like 16 panel hat that they stitched
- 31:51Speaker 4: backwards and it was made out of elastic and it's
- 31:53Speaker 4: like a scully, you know what I mean? And he goes,
- 31:57Speaker 4: so what'd you guys do? He goes, we had to
- 31:59Speaker 4: mass produce it, but it was too expensive in America,
- 32:02Speaker 4: so we flew to China. So they flew to China.
- 32:05Speaker 3: They weren't at the airport, so they flew non-rev.
- 32:08Speaker 4: I think that's what they did. And then they made
- 32:10Speaker 4: the hat and I think they had enough for like,
- 32:13Speaker 4: I'll make them a number again. Don't quote me on this.
- 32:15Speaker 4: They made like 3,000 hats, okay? So they find out
- 32:19Speaker 4: about the magic convention that's in Vegas. Him and... They
- 32:24Speaker 4: can't rent a booth. These booths are expensive, right? So
- 32:29Speaker 4: their idea was they took business cards, stapled it on
- 32:32Speaker 4: the hat, invited no buyers... They saw which buyers were
- 32:37Speaker 4: going into the booths as they're walking out. They're like, hey, man,
- 32:40Speaker 4: we have this hat. Just want to hand that to you, man.
- 32:43Speaker 4: It's this hat. By the way, this is before Biggie
- 32:46Speaker 4: was wearing it, right? He said, boom, boom, boom, boom.
- 32:48Speaker 3: These cats were going home.
- 32:50Speaker 4: He said, by the time they handed out all 3,000 hats,
- 32:54Speaker 4: they went back home to New York, making up the numbers.
- 32:58Speaker 4: Please don't quote me. 20,000 orders. They blew up like that. Wow.
- 33:03Speaker 4: Blew up.
- 33:03Speaker 1: They.
- 33:04Speaker 4: Fucking Skyrock, Damani, by the way. And when I was
- 33:08Speaker 4: talking to her, I was like, that's when I was like, oh,
- 33:11Speaker 4: like I'm the biggest fan, man, but there's nowhere here
- 33:13Speaker 4: in Vegas that sells it. Yeah, it's hard to get
- 33:15Speaker 4: it to these, you know, there's not too many places
- 33:18Speaker 4: that sell this, you know, because there were no urban stores.
- 33:20Speaker 4: There were no hip hop stores. So I go, I
- 33:24Speaker 4: just want to buy that hat, man. And he goes,
- 33:27Speaker 4: I'm going to send my assistant down. I was like, yo,
- 33:30Speaker 4: you got an assistant? He goes, I'm going to send
- 33:32Speaker 4: my assistant out with a whole bunch. What's your size?
- 33:34Speaker 4: I go, dude, 2X, right? That's what you're wearing. He goes,
- 33:37Speaker 4: what's your size shoe? I tell him the size shoe.
- 33:40Speaker 4: This little Asian girl comes down. Stacks of Dada. Yeah, right?
- 33:47Speaker 4: Brings it to me. And then he goes, what do
- 33:50Speaker 4: you do? I go, I do stand-up comedy. I rent
- 33:52Speaker 4: out these rooms. I go, man, I would love to
- 33:55Speaker 4: just be sponsored. You don't have to pay. Just give
- 33:58Speaker 4: me some gear and I'll wear it. He goes, Dumb, man.
- 34:01Speaker 4: We've been wanting to do a comedy show. No kidding.
- 34:04Speaker 4: Swear to God, Chris. He goes, here's a number. He
- 34:06Speaker 4: gives me this phone number. He goes, call this number,
- 34:08Speaker 4: all right? I call this number every single day. Number
- 34:13Speaker 4: picks up, right? So I'm like, you know what? Fuck this, man.
- 34:16Speaker 4: Fast forward a year later. They never pick up the
- 34:18Speaker 4: phone call.
- 34:18Speaker 3: They didn't pick up the phone?
- 34:19Speaker 4: Never picked up the phone call.
- 34:19Speaker 3: After they gave me a stack of clothes?
- 34:20Speaker 4: Yeah, he never picked up the phone number. The guy
- 34:22Speaker 4: that he gave me the number for never picked up.
- 34:25Speaker 3: You should have called the Asian girl.
- 34:26Speaker 4: Yeah, I should have. I waited a year. Took all
- 34:29Speaker 4: these pictures of me wearing the stuff on stage. I
- 34:32Speaker 4: know what their booth looks like. My boys are dancing.
- 34:35Speaker 4: Style Elements, Remind and Crumbs. And they're at Tribal. So
- 34:40Speaker 4: they had the passes, right? So two would go in
- 34:44Speaker 4: and then one would come out with two passes and
- 34:45Speaker 4: put the other pass around me. And that's how I
- 34:48Speaker 4: got in. And then I gave my pass back to Remind.
- 34:50Speaker 4: And Chris, I stood at that booth until I saw... Damani,
- 34:56Speaker 4: like Damon, right? And I'm literally just waiting. It's a
- 34:59Speaker 4: four day, it's four days. He didn't come till the
- 35:02Speaker 4: third day. And the third day he walked in, I go, motherfucker,
- 35:05Speaker 4: he's here. And I walked right into that booth and
- 35:08Speaker 4: he was already selling. He was selling to buyers and stuff, right?
- 35:10Speaker 4: He was showing the new line and I go, hey,
- 35:12Speaker 4: I don't mean to interrupt you, man, but I'm Joe Coy,
- 35:15Speaker 4: that comedian you met at the front desk. And he goes, yeah,
- 35:18Speaker 4: I remember you, man. Like, what's going on? I was like, yo,
- 35:21Speaker 4: all that gear I wore on stage, I had a
- 35:23Speaker 4: bunch of shows I did, but I called that number
- 35:26Speaker 4: and they never picked up. He goes, what the fuck?
- 35:29Speaker 4: He goes, Los. Turns around, he goes, Los. And I
- 35:32Speaker 4: know you know him. I'm pretty sure you know him.
- 35:34Speaker 3: I know Los.
- 35:35Speaker 4: You know Carlos? Of course.
- 35:36Speaker 2: Dude, he goes, Los.
- 35:37Speaker 4: And Los stands up, he goes, what's up?
- 35:39Speaker 6: He goes, this is the motherfucker I told you about,
- 35:41Speaker 6: the comedian, man. You didn't pick up the phone? It's
- 35:44Speaker 6: the guy right here. And then he was like, oh,
- 35:47Speaker 6: I'm sorry, man. They've been busy and all that shit.
- 35:49Speaker 6: He was like, I've been busy, man. I'm sorry about that.
- 35:52Speaker 4: Come to my office in LA right here on, you know,
- 35:56Speaker 4: second street.
- 35:57Speaker 3: Second downtown.
- 35:57Speaker 4: Yeah, downtown. He goes, come to blah, blah, blah. This
- 35:59Speaker 4: is when I had a prelude with one missing headlight,
- 36:02Speaker 4: no taillight. I'm like, I've never been to LA before
- 36:06Speaker 4: in my life. I drove down and pull into their thing,
- 36:11Speaker 4: their building. I've never seen so many black millionaires. It
- 36:14Speaker 4: was crazy. By the way, Dada was all black. All black.
- 36:20Speaker 4: You talk about FUBU. FUBU was owned by a whole conglomerate.
- 36:25Speaker 4: You know what I mean? The face was black. All
- 36:27Speaker 4: of them were kind of owned by someone. But Dada
- 36:30Speaker 4: was black. The accountant was black. The designer was black.
- 36:34Speaker 4: Lance Simpson and Lovetta. the owners like, yeah, you remember? And, uh,
- 36:39Speaker 4: and I go in there and I see rolls is,
- 36:41Speaker 4: and I see everything I seen in a biggie video.
- 36:43Speaker 4: I've never seen anything like it before. Like I was,
- 36:46Speaker 4: I couldn't believe what I was seeing rims on a,
- 36:48Speaker 4: on an escalate. Like I'm going in and I'm sitting down.
- 36:52Speaker 4: I had made this fake sheet of how much it's
- 36:56Speaker 4: going to cost for them to produce. I made it
- 36:58Speaker 4: all up. I went to Kinko's, I print all this
- 37:00Speaker 4: stuff up. And then, uh, And Lance walks in, Lance Simpson,
- 37:04Speaker 4: you know, and he walks in and he sits down
- 37:06Speaker 4: and he's like, I saw, I saw your presentation, man. Yeah,
- 37:10Speaker 4: let's do it.
- 37:12Speaker 2: And I go, what?
- 37:13Speaker 4: He goes, yeah, yeah, whatever. And I remember it took
- 37:15Speaker 4: me forever to come up with like $ 5, 800. I thought
- 37:18Speaker 4: I was asking for too much. And then he was like, yeah, yeah,
- 37:21Speaker 4: let's do it. And I was like, oh, shit, I
- 37:24Speaker 4: should ask for more. And then we ended up having
- 37:27Speaker 4: this relationship, right? where he would give me his credit
- 37:31Speaker 4: card and I was booking comics that I knew from
- 37:36Speaker 4: the Black College Comedy Tour. So I would bring J.B.
- 37:40Speaker 4: Smooth out, Michael Blackson, Honest John, Joey Wells, J-Dub. I
- 37:50Speaker 4: brought them all to Vegas. That was all in the 90s.
- 37:52Speaker 4: And I was being sponsored by a black millionaire.
- 37:56Speaker 3: That's dope.
- 37:57Speaker 2: Wow.
- 37:58Speaker 4: Like he would literally, I was buying tickets for everyone
- 38:00Speaker 4: on his credit card. I was buying rooms with his
- 38:02Speaker 4: credit card. When I did the Apollo, when I got
- 38:05Speaker 4: the Apollo, you'll see me wearing a Dada hat and
- 38:09Speaker 4: Dada paid for, they paid for me to fly to
- 38:13Speaker 4: New York and go on. Anyway, I know this a lot.
- 38:17Speaker 2: No, that's crazy.
- 38:18Speaker 5: I love hearing these stories because I'm only 20 plus years.
- 38:22Speaker 3: I knew none of this.
- 38:23Speaker 4: That's crazy.
- 38:24Speaker 2: It just shows, educated me, like the hustle.
- 38:27Speaker 1: Yeah like everybody has like everybody has that hustle and
- 38:32Speaker 1: then obviously it seems like you witnessed something you saw
- 38:35Speaker 1: something you went after yeah and now it's like okay
- 38:38Speaker 1: now you are where you are the things that you
- 38:41Speaker 1: did then to get where you are do you do
- 38:43Speaker 1: some of the same things now yeah and it's Yeah,
- 38:46Speaker 1: I think that's... He's going.
- 38:47Speaker 3: To say some shit and you're going to go, no,
- 38:49Speaker 3: the fuck you don't. If it's what I'm thinking.
- 38:51Speaker 4: Which one?
- 38:52Speaker 3: The fucking flyers.
- 38:53Speaker 4: Oh, yeah. I'll hand out flyers all day. I'll still
- 38:55Speaker 4: do it. I just sold out SoFi Stadium. Let me
- 38:57Speaker 4: set up.
- 38:57Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 38:58Speaker 4: Let me.
- 38:59Speaker 3: 20 second time out. Set up the size venues you
- 39:03Speaker 3: do now.
- 39:05Speaker 4: SoFi was almost 70,000 and it was sold out. We
- 39:08Speaker 4: sold it out less than six months. Wow.
- 39:11Speaker 2: 70,000.
- 39:12Speaker 4: I still have the record for the... Staple Center? Staple Center. No,
- 39:15Speaker 4: for a forum. I'm the only comment to do it
- 39:18Speaker 4: six times. Wow. Yeah, it's crazy. But I'll still hand
- 39:23Speaker 4: out flyers. I don't care.
- 39:24Speaker 3: This motherfucker.
- 39:26Speaker 4: But why?
- 39:27Speaker 3: Just give me, give me, give me But no, don't
- 39:28Speaker 3: tell him you had a flyer. It's not like you
- 39:29Speaker 3: had car washers going like this. He'll go put them
- 39:32Speaker 3: in all the seats. Yeah.
- 39:33Speaker 5: This is, whatever, 17505 is the forum.
- 39:37Speaker 3: This motherfucker, you'll come sit down and go, oh, you know,
- 39:40Speaker 3: he's going to be in Albuquerque next week.
- 39:41Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 39:42Speaker 3: He still does this shit. Now listen, why don't we
- 39:46Speaker 3: make it even more?
- 39:47Speaker 5: It ain't like there's a whole bunch of, remember like
- 39:49Speaker 5: Bobby Brown had a whole bunch of people that looked
- 39:50Speaker 5: like him walking around? It'd be him and some other
- 39:53Speaker 5: people putting it on the seats. It ain't like Joe
- 39:55Speaker 5: Corey's minions, go! This motherfucker is, personally.
- 39:59Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah, man. Why? I don't know, when you get,
- 40:06Speaker 4: I don't know, when they say.
- 40:07Speaker 1: No, Cause you don't have to. Cause you remember you
- 40:09Speaker 1: were that, that 18 year old kid.
- 40:11Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 40:12Speaker 2: You met the guy that owned Dada.
- 40:14Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 40:15Speaker 2: And he said, let me get my assistant.
- 40:17Speaker 1: I go get, and like, that would have been, I
- 40:20Speaker 1: thought something that you would have done taking that blueprint.
- 40:22Speaker 2: Like, okay, I'm the boss. Let me go get my,
- 40:25Speaker 2: my assistant.
- 40:26Speaker 4: Cause it was a consistent battle of always like trying
- 40:29Speaker 4: to prove myself. Cause like, even though I did that,
- 40:32Speaker 4: like the way I met honest John and honest John goes,
- 40:35Speaker 4: Hey man, Yeah, Bob Sumner needs to see you.
- 40:38Speaker 3: By the way, Honest John is white.
- 40:40Speaker 4: Yeah. And this is the reason why. Because Bob, he goes,
- 40:45Speaker 4: Bob Sumner needs to see you, man. You a beast, man.
- 40:48Speaker 4: And Bob Sumner is the one that, you know, co-created
- 40:51Speaker 4: Def Comedy Jam.
- 40:52Speaker 3: Booked everybody.
- 40:53Speaker 4: And he was doing this whole thing where it was
- 40:55Speaker 4: on tour. And here's another thing of racism for you.
- 40:58Speaker 4: Here's some little racism bits for you. Even though Def
- 41:02Speaker 4: Jam was selling out, None of the hotels on the
- 41:05Speaker 4: strip wanted it. They didn't want black nights, you know,
- 41:09Speaker 4: the black comedy shows. This is the 90s. I'm not
- 41:11Speaker 4: even joking. So they had to go off strip. Like,
- 41:16Speaker 4: Def Comedy Jam was on Boulder Highway at a hotel
- 41:20Speaker 4: called Sam's Town. They wouldn't put him in Caesars and
- 41:24Speaker 4: all that. They were not going to put a black
- 41:26Speaker 4: show on the strip.
- 41:28Speaker 3: I swear.
- 41:28Speaker 4: Like, it's crazy to even say things like this. And
- 41:31Speaker 4: now I'm at Samstown. I live in Vegas and I'm
- 41:34Speaker 4: on Boulder Highway and I'm like, Def Jam's in Samstown? Like, what?
- 41:39Speaker 4: And it was Rudy Rush, Pierre, Honest John, and I
- 41:45Speaker 4: forgot who the female was.
- 41:46Speaker 3: Ricky or Joe?
- 41:48Speaker 4: No, it was Rudy. Rudy was hosting.
- 41:51Speaker 3: Rudy was hosting, okay.
- 41:52Speaker 4: And then, so Honest John's like, get that alley, man.
- 41:55Speaker 4: and I'm going to tell Bob to put you on
- 41:57Speaker 4: for five minutes.
- 41:58Speaker 5: So let me describe what Honest John looks like. He's
- 42:00Speaker 5: an older white guy who looks like granola. You know,
- 42:03Speaker 5: you've seen him before. He wears old flannel shirts, old pants.
- 42:06Speaker 4: Tie-dye.
- 42:07Speaker 3: But he's only done urban rooms. He's been on Comic View.
- 42:09Speaker 3: He's been on Def Jam.
- 42:10Speaker 5: He's one of the funniest human beings you'll ever meet.
- 42:12Speaker 4: Yeah, he'll only do urban rooms. And I love him, man.
- 42:14Speaker 4: And he goes, he goes, I'm going to introduce you
- 42:17Speaker 4: to Bob Sunder, man. Like, there's no reason why you're
- 42:20Speaker 4: not on this Def Jam tour with me.
- 42:22Speaker 1: Right?
- 42:22Speaker 4: I love you, Honest John. And, uh, I go backstage
- 42:26Speaker 4: to you, and here comes Bob Summer. I'm with my sister.
- 42:30Speaker 4: She's sitting right next to me. And I'm standing there,
- 42:34Speaker 4: and here comes Bob. And first of all, I'm always
- 42:36Speaker 4: just blown away when I see anything of power of
- 42:40Speaker 4: the show that I'm in love with, right? So now
- 42:42Speaker 4: this guy owns Def Jam, and he's walking towards me.
- 42:45Speaker 4: I'm an up-and-coming comic. And he's eating, just eating dirty, too.
- 42:50Speaker 4: Like the muffin shit's on his lips. You know what
- 42:52Speaker 4: I mean? Like so disrespectful. You know what I mean?
- 42:54Speaker 4: It's just like, so, um, uh, John says, uh, you're funny.
- 42:59Speaker 4: All right. Um, all right. This is what we're going
- 43:02Speaker 4: to do. We're going to go ahead and let you
- 43:05Speaker 4: go on, uh, about five minutes before the show starts
- 43:08Speaker 4: while they're still sitting people. So, um, uh, we're not
- 43:12Speaker 4: gonna open the curtains up. So we're just gonna open
- 43:14Speaker 4: up a little, you just go through the curtains. Cause
- 43:16Speaker 4: you know that big, beautiful display, it says Def Jam.
- 43:20Speaker 4: It's this big, beautiful stage. He doesn't want to be
- 43:22Speaker 4: a part of that. All right. So we're gonna leave
- 43:24Speaker 4: the curtains closed. You go through the hole. I had
- 43:27Speaker 4: to walk out like, you know, Kurt Burnett, when she
- 43:29Speaker 4: comes out and mops the fucking floor. And I had
- 43:32Speaker 4: to go through it. And he goes, five minutes before
- 43:34Speaker 4: we start the show, lights are going to be still
- 43:36Speaker 4: on and we're still going to be sitting people. And
- 43:38Speaker 4: then he goes, and don't say welcome to Def Jam.
- 43:41Speaker 4: And when you say goodnight, just say goodnight. And then
- 43:43Speaker 4: we'll walk you through the curtains.
- 43:45Speaker 2: All right?
- 43:45Speaker 4: And he's still eating dirty, man. All right, man. Have fun.
- 43:49Speaker 4: And he walks out and I'm like, have fun? Like,
- 43:52Speaker 4: why the fuck am I here? I'm going to eat
- 43:54Speaker 4: my ass out there. Right? And the stage manager, he
- 43:59Speaker 4: heard the whole thing, man. And he walked in. I
- 44:01Speaker 4: looked at my sister. My sister was just like, you're
- 44:03Speaker 4: going to do good. Don't worry. Don't worry about it.
- 44:04Speaker 4: And I'm like, yeah, that's bullshit. Like, why am I
- 44:06Speaker 4: even doing this shit?
- 44:07Speaker 3: Like, this sucks.
- 44:09Speaker 4: And then the stage manager, he's just like, he's like,
- 44:12Speaker 4: you know what, man? We're at 75%. Oh, good. He goes,
- 44:15Speaker 4: we're at 75%. So I'm going to turn the lights down.
- 44:17Speaker 4: We're not going to leave them on. They're not going
- 44:20Speaker 4: to be completely off, but I'm going to turn them
- 44:21Speaker 4: down to like 90%.
- 44:22Speaker 3: Make it still feel like a fucking show.
- 44:24Speaker 4: Yeah, he goes, it's still going to feel like a show, man.
- 44:26Speaker 4: So he goes, um. He goes, but I can't open
- 44:29Speaker 4: that goddamn curtain. I'll get fired. So I literally went
- 44:33Speaker 4: through the curtain. Literally, it's just rumbling. People are getting
- 44:37Speaker 4: to the seats. What's up, man?
- 44:39Speaker 2: Still talking.
- 44:40Speaker 4: And I'm literally like, hi, I'm Joe Coy.
- 44:43Speaker 5: I'm glad you already look crazy. You've got this huge
- 44:46Speaker 5: urban show, and then this young Asian comedian comes up.
- 44:49Speaker 4: And I walk out with a Caesar cut. It's so bad.
- 44:53Speaker 4: Glasses and a suit, because Eddie Murphy said I always
- 44:56Speaker 4: wore suits. Right.
- 44:58Speaker 5: That's your hero.
- 45:00Speaker 4: And I walked out and then, and I'm, first minute
- 45:04Speaker 4: I'm struggling. No one's listening to me, man. And then
- 45:06Speaker 4: I just got to like this one bit that I
- 45:09Speaker 4: always knew was going to, and they're just screaming. Like
- 45:12Speaker 4: there was bleachers and you can hear them stomping on
- 45:14Speaker 4: the bleachers.
- 45:14Speaker 3: Do you remember the bit?
- 45:15Speaker 4: It's Michael Jackson. Oh yeah. Yeah. And I'm doing the
- 45:18Speaker 4: whole making up the words thing.
- 45:20Speaker 2: Right.
- 45:21Speaker 4: And, and I, right when I end that joke, I
- 45:23Speaker 4: was like, I'm Joe Coy. Good night. Ah, They're standing
- 45:28Speaker 4: and shit. And I walk through the curtain. Like, I'm
- 45:32Speaker 4: going into a doghouse. I don't walk back through the
- 45:35Speaker 4: curtain and close the curtain. And Rudy Rush is there, right,
- 45:39Speaker 4: with Bob Sumner. He's done eating, right?
- 45:42Speaker 3: But shit is still on his clothes.
- 45:43Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah. But it's all over his clothes. Just muffin
- 45:46Speaker 4: all over his chest. And, uh. And my sister's like
- 45:49Speaker 4: hugging me, like, I.
- 45:50Speaker 3: Told you, that was the shit joke.
- 45:52Speaker 4: She's hugging me. And then Rudy's yelling at Bob, like,
- 45:56Speaker 4: why the fuck did you just put that up? And
- 46:00Speaker 4: now I got to go up and MC? Like, why
- 46:02Speaker 4: didn't you let me go out and then put him
- 46:04Speaker 4: on after me? He's like, I didn't know this motherfucker
- 46:06Speaker 4: was funny. I'm just John's friend. Like, they're having a
- 46:09Speaker 4: full-on argument. And you're right there. Yeah, right there. And
- 46:12Speaker 4: all my shows were with, you know, Dada. So, like,
- 46:14Speaker 4: you know, I... I met Honest John through that. So anyway,
- 46:20Speaker 4: he goes, he's like, fuck, man. He goes, you ever
- 46:25Speaker 4: hear of the Apollo? I go, yeah, I love the Apollo.
- 46:28Speaker 4: He goes, you're on. We're going to bring you on
- 46:31Speaker 4: next week. I have my producer's car. We're doing a
- 46:33Speaker 4: comedy showcase. I want you on that motherfucker. And that's
- 46:36Speaker 4: how I got.
- 46:39Speaker 4: The Apollo, which I won. And then, of course, Dada
- 46:42Speaker 4: paid for me to fly out there for that.
- 46:43Speaker 5: So for those who don't know, The Apollo is probably
- 46:47Speaker 5: the hardest.
- 46:48Speaker 2: The most sacred.
- 46:49Speaker 3: Well, Kiki, this is Kiki Sheppard, right?
- 46:53Speaker 4: Yeah, Kiki Sheppard, rest in peace. Rudy Rush, Steve Jesleff.
- 46:56Speaker 4: Steve Harvey. This is where they booed. Yes. Yeah, this
- 47:00Speaker 4: is where they booed everybody.
- 47:02Speaker 5: And so, one of the premier theaters in the world.
- 47:06Speaker 5: And it was a place where black... talent from Moms
- 47:09Speaker 5: Mabley to Sammy Davis Jr., people who could not perform
- 47:11Speaker 5: anywhere else. This was like the mecca.
- 47:14Speaker 3: Of the Chitlin' Turkey.
- 47:15Speaker 4: James Brown rubbed that. Yes.
- 47:17Speaker 3: Gladys Knight, everybody knows.
- 47:18Speaker 4: Everyone rubbed that.
- 47:18Speaker 5: So the fact that you went there and killed and
- 47:21Speaker 5: won the amateur night is bananas.
- 47:23Speaker 4: It's nuts.
- 47:24Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 47:25Speaker 4: With the same bit that I did on Def Jam.
- 47:28Speaker 4: Because Rudy told me to do it. He goes, you
- 47:29Speaker 4: got to do that. Yes. Do that bit. Of course.
- 47:31Speaker 4: And that's why I did that.
- 47:32Speaker 3: It's your bit.
- 47:32Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 47:33Speaker 3: You know what I mean? Sometimes you're worried about, should
- 47:35Speaker 3: I do this? Not everybody has seen your act.
- 47:37Speaker 4: You know what I mean?
- 47:38Speaker 5: Especially in front of a curtain in fucking Henderson or
- 47:41Speaker 5: wherever that was.
- 47:42Speaker 4: That was Henderson. So anyway, you asked me why I
- 47:45Speaker 4: hand out flyers. Because I'm always those moments. They don't
- 47:51Speaker 4: know me, man. So I gotta let everybody know. I
- 47:56Speaker 4: don't care. Even at SoFi, I hand in a.
- 48:00Speaker 1: So it seems like you're constantly trying to Prove yourself.
- 48:03Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 48:04Speaker 2: And obviously you did that.
- 48:06Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 48:07Speaker 2: How and when did you know that you were funny?
- 48:10Speaker 4: You know what's crazy? Can I just say one more thing?
- 48:12Speaker 3: Sure.
- 48:13Speaker 4: My new special is about to drop for Netflix. It's
- 48:15Speaker 4: called Blue in the Face. It's my favorite special. This
- 48:18Speaker 4: one's my favorite, hands down. Literally last week I told
- 48:23Speaker 4: my son, make sure we make 10,000 flyers. I swear
- 48:26Speaker 4: to God. That's why this is so crazy that we're
- 48:28Speaker 4: talking about this. I didn't even want you to bring
- 48:30Speaker 4: that up.
- 48:30Speaker 3: Because you're going to pass them up.
- 48:31Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm going to make sure they go everywhere. I'm
- 48:33Speaker 4: going to put them in windshield wipers. I'm going to
- 48:36Speaker 4: put them everywhere. Car doors.
- 48:37Speaker 3: And what's on the flyer? The future, your website.
- 48:41Speaker 4: It'll stay blue in the face. It'll be Netflix. Make
- 48:44Speaker 4: sure it's streaming now, September 15th. And it'll say all
- 48:47Speaker 4: my information on the back. I don't give a fuck.
- 48:50Speaker 2: And you're going to be putting this in Vegas?
- 48:53Speaker 4: I'll put them everywhere.
- 48:54Speaker 3: Any and everywhere.
- 48:55Speaker 4: I do tours. So if I'm in... Omaha, Nebraska, I
- 48:58Speaker 4: will be at a parking lot. I'll put a whole
- 49:01Speaker 4: bunch out.
- 49:01Speaker 3: Oh, I was joking saying he doesn't go to the
- 49:03Speaker 3: parking lot.
- 49:04Speaker 4: Oh, yeah, I go. Yeah.
- 49:05Speaker 2: So if you're on a plane, you carry flyers and you.
- 49:07Speaker 4: No, I don't do it on the plane so much.
- 49:09Speaker 3: I mean, not on the plane.
- 49:10Speaker 4: Yeah, I do it when... Because, you know, I get recognized.
- 49:13Speaker 4: You know what I mean? So that's kind of cheesy. Like, hey.
- 49:16Speaker 3: Hey, I'm... He does it when I can't see him.
- 49:17Speaker 4: A hustler's a hustler.
- 49:18Speaker 3: I thought you were just.
- 49:20Speaker 2: doing it like, okay.
- 49:21Speaker 3: If he does it like this, then it's a conversation.
- 49:24Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 49:24Speaker 1: Right.
- 49:25Speaker 3: If he can sneak it on a car and get
- 49:26Speaker 3: the fuck back in his car. Yeah, for sure, for sure.
- 49:28Speaker 4: Okay. Yeah.
- 49:29Speaker 5: This is when I knew you were on a different level.
- 49:31Speaker 5: What's the little pot that your mom used to clean her?
- 49:34Speaker 4: Which one? The thing.
- 49:35Speaker 3: You talked about the little.
- 49:38Speaker 4: Oh, tableau. Her tabo.
- 49:40Speaker 3: Tell them what this is. And then you're going to
- 49:42Speaker 3: go watch a special. This is how... Let me tell
- 49:44Speaker 3: you what makes you and Kevin unique. And this is
- 49:46Speaker 3: why you and Kevin are on fucking top.
- 49:48Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 49:48Speaker 3: You talk about your family and you make us blush
- 49:52Speaker 3: without you guys blushing.
- 49:53Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 49:54Speaker 3: Tell them what the dabo is. Tabo, whatever the fuck
- 49:56Speaker 3: it is.
- 49:56Speaker 4: What is it? So, tabo. Tabo? Yeah. So, it's a cup.
- 50:00Speaker 4: My mom always had a cup on the side of
- 50:02Speaker 4: the toilet.
- 50:03Speaker 2: Okay.
- 50:03Speaker 4: And that's how she would wash... She would wash herself.
- 50:08Speaker 2: Oh, okay.
- 50:08Speaker 1: And.
- 50:10Speaker 4: And I always found it to be very weird when
- 50:13Speaker 4: I was a kid, especially because she would ask me
- 50:15Speaker 4: to fill the damn thing. Wash herself.
- 50:18Speaker 3: She has a shower right there and a bathtub, but
- 50:20Speaker 3: when she's on the toilet, she'll wash it.
- 50:22Speaker 4: It's called a tabo, which is very common in our culture.
- 50:25Speaker 2: But that's a cultural thing, right?
- 50:27Speaker 4: Yeah, but people, when I say it on stage, I'll
- 50:29Speaker 4: tell it. I don't do it anymore, but I used
- 50:31Speaker 4: to say it, and people go, ooh. And I'm like,
- 50:33Speaker 4: you're ooh-ing. What are you ooh-ing? My mom's pussy's clean.
- 50:36Speaker 4: Your mom's wiping her shit.
- 50:39Speaker 6: Right.
- 50:40Speaker 4: Right. She got little fucking knuckles. Particles. She got tissue
- 50:44Speaker 4: paper balled up in her pussy. My mom is squeaky clean, bitch.
- 50:49Speaker 4: What are you oohing? You're what? Because she's clean?
- 50:52Speaker 3: My mom pees in whistles.
- 50:54Speaker 1: Right.
- 50:54Speaker 4: You got clitty litter in your mom's pussy. Get the
- 50:58Speaker 4: fuck out of here.
- 51:00Speaker 5: So in this special, you talk about your stepfather, which
- 51:02Speaker 5: apparently must have been something that you kind of.
- 51:04Speaker 4: Yeah, because I love him so much. Right. And, you know,
- 51:07Speaker 4: he passed, you know. So now you did it? No,
- 51:10Speaker 4: I just, I tried to do it before. It just
- 51:13Speaker 4: wasn't meshing right. Okay. And now it made sense. Like
- 51:19Speaker 4: now the story deserves where it's at. Yeah. Like the
- 51:24Speaker 4: other topics on the other special, and then all of
- 51:26Speaker 4: a sudden I'm making a hard left and I'm talking
- 51:29Speaker 4: about my stepdad. Right. Whereas this is like, it's a
- 51:32Speaker 4: through line. It's my childhood. It's me getting fired at McDonald's. It's,
- 51:37Speaker 4: you know, my mom- Like, it's the whole me being
- 51:41Speaker 4: raised by, you know, Sergeant Fred Harrison and my mom.
- 51:45Speaker 4: You know what I mean?
- 51:46Speaker 3: I don't hear about you doing spots.
- 51:48Speaker 5: Like, a lot of comedians, when they're gearing up for
- 51:51Speaker 5: a special, they'll go do 20 minutes here, 15 minutes here.
- 51:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 51:54Speaker 3: Are you writing your new special when you're in these
- 51:57Speaker 3: 10 and 15,000?
- 51:57Speaker 4: Yeah. Wow. That's when I do it.
- 52:00Speaker 3: You don't work out anymore like that.
- 52:01Speaker 4: I do.
- 52:01Speaker 3: I mean, if you're in town.
- 52:03Speaker 4: It's crazy, though. Like, I don't know if you see
- 52:05Speaker 4: me doing the pop-ups. Like, I'll just be like, Hey,
- 52:08Speaker 4: I'm going to the improv, Brea. I'll see you there.
- 52:11Speaker 4: It'll be sold out. So that's where I work out.
- 52:16Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 52:17Speaker 4: Okay.
- 52:17Speaker 2: And how do you come up with your material?
- 52:20Speaker 4: I just, you know, I tell my openers, like, just
- 52:22Speaker 4: say it, dude. Like, whatever it is that you're thinking,
- 52:26Speaker 4: just say it. If it bombs, oh, wow. You know
- 52:28Speaker 4: what I mean?
- 52:28Speaker 2: No, you can't do, oh, bomb.
- 52:30Speaker 3: You can't just do that.
- 52:31Speaker 5: But listen, sometimes it bombs, and you know in your
- 52:33Speaker 5: heart that this shit is funny. So that's what I'm saying. Like,
- 52:36Speaker 5: he goes to Brea at improv. improv to work out
- 52:39Speaker 5: what he thinks is funny that might have bombed.
- 52:43Speaker 4: But you've got to wedge it, right? So you know
- 52:46Speaker 4: this is going to kill and this is going to kill.
- 52:48Speaker 4: Let me sneak this in. If it doesn't do well
- 52:51Speaker 4: or bomb, then you know how to get into this.
- 52:54Speaker 4: You know how to get out of it. But I
- 52:57Speaker 4: have to try it because I need to write. And
- 53:00Speaker 4: sometimes I'll tell the audience, like, hey, look, I'm writing,
- 53:03Speaker 4: because when this drops, when this drops September 15th, I
- 53:06Speaker 4: can't do any of that shit. I just posted the
- 53:10Speaker 4: trailer for it, and it's already crushing, and it's making
- 53:14Speaker 4: me sad, because it's my favorite joke right now. Yeah,
- 53:17Speaker 4: the dog. It's my favorite joke. On tour, people request
- 53:22Speaker 4: it now, and it's like, I know once this drops,
- 53:24Speaker 4: I can't do it anymore. Really? Yeah, I can't. I
- 53:28Speaker 4: can't repeat that.
- 53:29Speaker 5: But not all comics comedians do that. There's some comedians...
- 53:32Speaker 5: who will, after Special Drops, still will give you.
- 53:36Speaker 2: Tweak it?
- 53:37Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 53:37Speaker 2: Or give you a variation of.
- 53:38Speaker 3: Or give you the best of and their new stuff. Yeah.
- 53:42Speaker 3: Do you go from... Like, if the Special Drops, I
- 53:46Speaker 3: go see... The Special Drops on Sunday, I go see
- 53:48Speaker 3: you on Monday, even though I haven't seen the Special.
- 53:50Speaker 4: You won't see anything.
- 53:50Speaker 3: I won't hear not one joke from the Special.
- 53:52Speaker 4: None of it. Really? Yeah, I'm already not doing the
- 53:55Speaker 4: dog bit. And it's crushing me. It's crushing me. Because
- 53:59Speaker 4: I could still do it right now if I wanted to.
- 54:02Speaker 4: And it's crushing me right now. Wow. Yeah. Like, literally.
- 54:06Speaker 4: It's just like I used to do this one bit
- 54:08Speaker 4: about accents. I used to do the different accents.
- 54:11Speaker 3: The different Asian ones?
- 54:12Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 54:13Speaker 3: That shit was murderous.
- 54:14Speaker 4: And I used to love it so much. And then
- 54:17Speaker 4: once it dropped, I literally stopped doing it. And, like,
- 54:21Speaker 4: I would literally hear people yelling out, accents! And I
- 54:24Speaker 4: had to ignore it and just.
- 54:26Speaker 3: So he could do Chinese, Filipino.
- 54:29Speaker 4: Thai.
- 54:30Speaker 3: All these different Asian accents.
- 54:32Speaker 4: But the thing is, but the reason why I do
- 54:36Speaker 4: it is because it's not, the whole point of the
- 54:39Speaker 4: joke is like, this is how you tell them apart
- 54:46Speaker 4: if they had an accent. You can't tell us apart.
- 54:49Speaker 2: And they're specific.
- 54:54Speaker 4: Details in the accent that will let you know. And
- 54:57Speaker 4: I'm letting you know this is how. But don't go
- 55:00Speaker 4: up to a motherfucker and go, Vietnamese. And they're speaking
- 55:05Speaker 4: perfectly good English. Now you're just a racist. And I
- 55:10Speaker 4: love that bit. And the reason why I did that
- 55:12Speaker 4: bit is because one, my best friends growing up were Korean.
- 55:15Speaker 4: So all I was doing was their dads. I always
- 55:18Speaker 4: made fun of their dads when I was a kid.
- 55:20Speaker 4: My next door neighbor was Vietnamese. His name was Vu.
- 55:22Speaker 4: He could ball out. Like, literally, he was 5'2, T.O.
- 55:27Speaker 4: And he would ball. He would cross me over. He'd
- 55:30Speaker 4: fucking hit. And when he'd hit, he'd have that accent like, game, motherfucker.
- 55:34Speaker 4: That's it. Down, you down, motherfucker. Let's do next shot.
- 55:41Speaker 4: Like there's someone else that can play ball. And literally
- 55:44Speaker 4: that accent was my boy V. His name is Vu,
- 55:47Speaker 4: but we call him V.
- 55:48Speaker 3: Wait, so why are you here?
- 55:49Speaker 4: Go back.
- 55:50Speaker 3: How did the Vietnamese people sound?
- 55:51Speaker 4: Huh?
- 55:51Speaker 3: How did the Vietnamese people sound?
- 55:52Speaker 4: They talk like that, like that. Gang, my fuck, sit down.
- 55:56Speaker 4: That's it.
- 55:56Speaker 1: No more.
- 55:57Speaker 2: It's like when you go get a man.
- 55:59Speaker 3: You got girlfriend?
- 56:00Speaker 4: Yes. That's what he's doing.
- 56:01Speaker 3: And the Koreans sound like what?
- 56:03Speaker 4: Koreans very, very, you know.
- 56:05Speaker 1: Oh, no.
- 56:06Speaker 4: Koreans is like.
- 56:10Speaker 4: Like they're completely... So I'll tell you the joke. It's
- 56:14Speaker 4: so funny because when I was in Seattle, Steven came
- 56:16Speaker 4: to my show and the joke is his dad. So
- 56:19Speaker 4: it was a big show and we were in the
- 56:23Speaker 4: meet and greet and Steve was there and he literally
- 56:26Speaker 4: turned to everyone in the meet and greet. He goes,
- 56:28Speaker 4: I just want you to know that Korean accent that
- 56:30Speaker 4: he does is my fucking dad. And we both started
- 56:34Speaker 4: laughing because his dad owned a restaurant and they would
- 56:37Speaker 4: come home at three in the morning, but they would
- 56:38Speaker 4: just leave the kids a stack of money. Like literally
- 56:42Speaker 4: these kids raised themselves, right? So Stephen, like, so he
- 56:45Speaker 4: would just give them money. Every day they just had
- 56:47Speaker 4: money and they would feed themselves and cook themselves.
- 56:50Speaker 3: Do the dad.
- 56:51Speaker 4: Huh? Do the dad. So he hated me because the
- 56:54Speaker 4: kids were smart and I was a fuck off, right?
- 56:56Speaker 4: Like I, like they, he knew I shouldn't have been
- 56:59Speaker 4: hanging around with the, the dad was right. Right. Right. So,
- 57:03Speaker 4: so he would get mad that, so when he would
- 57:05Speaker 4: come home, I would stay the night, but I would
- 57:07Speaker 4: go hide in the closet and wait for him to
- 57:09Speaker 4: fall asleep. And when he'd fall asleep, we'd go back
- 57:12Speaker 4: down into the rec room. They had, like, this rec
- 57:13Speaker 4: room with ping pong and all this shit, right? And
- 57:16Speaker 4: so we just had to wait for him to sleep, right?
- 57:18Speaker 4: So I'm in the closet, and you would hear him.
- 57:20Speaker 4: He just knew. Like, oh. I'm just in the closet, like, ah,
- 57:26Speaker 4: this motherfucker knows I'm here.
- 57:30Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 57:38Speaker 3: See how specific it is?
- 57:39Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 57:40Speaker 2: Yeah, I know.
- 57:41Speaker 3: Very, very, very specific.
- 57:43Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 57:43Speaker 3: Are you full Filipino?
- 57:45Speaker 4: Half.
- 57:46Speaker 3: Your father's?
- 57:47Speaker 4: White. White. Yeah, he's a Herbert. What's that? Herbert.
- 57:51Speaker 3: That's what you guys call him?
- 57:52Speaker 4: No, that's his name. Oh.
- 57:53Speaker 5: I thought that was like a Filipino slang for white boy.
- 57:56Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 57:57Speaker 3: Herbert.
- 57:58Speaker 1: All right.
- 57:59Speaker 2: Man, you've had some amazing stories, bro.
- 58:02Speaker 4: I don't want to rap yet.
- 58:04Speaker 2: Man, we at the end, bro.
- 58:06Speaker 4: I don't want to. I'm with you.
- 58:09Speaker 2: We're at the end zone.
- 58:11Speaker 3: Although we've come.
- 58:13Speaker 2: We're in the red zone. We're going to ask you
- 58:14Speaker 2: four questions.
- 58:15Speaker 1: Oh, man.
- 58:16Speaker 2: Four questions.
- 58:17Speaker 4: Yes, sir.
- 58:18Speaker 1: First one is first down. It is one comedian who
- 58:22Speaker 1: deserves a bigger audience.
- 58:25Speaker 4: Oh, man. Dude, there's so many. Dude, that's a tough one.
- 58:32Speaker 2: We ask the tough questions here.
- 58:33Speaker 4: That's a tough one because there's so many. Damn, I
- 58:36Speaker 4: wish you didn't ask me that right now. I'll just say,
- 58:42Speaker 4: because I want to shout out my peeps, I feel
- 58:47Speaker 4: like there's some female comics that deserve a bigger audience,
- 58:52Speaker 4: like Tara Conostrasi, Lulu Gonzalez. Lulu deserves a lot of flowers.
- 59:01Speaker 4: What's her name?
- 59:05Speaker 2: Angela... Johnson?
- 59:05Speaker 9: Yeah, yeah Angela Johnson Angela got a huge following yeah
- 59:13Speaker 9: I'm you know I'm talking about the girls that are
- 59:16Speaker 9: still trying.
- 59:17Speaker 4: To get no no I get you yeah for sure
- 59:19Speaker 4: because they're beasts.
- 59:21Speaker 1: Are these the ones that you're going to feature in
- 59:23Speaker 1: the in the.
- 59:25Speaker 4: Right now I have I have Tara Tara Conostrasi Lulu Gonzalez,
- 59:32Speaker 4: Crystal Marie. There's this one guy, Nicky Paris, I think
- 59:37Speaker 4: he's so funny.
- 59:39Speaker 2: Second down, second question.
- 59:41Speaker 4: Oh, man.
- 59:41Speaker 2: Something Joe Jr. does better than Joe.
- 59:46Speaker 4: Man, he is very wise. I tend to impulse, and
- 59:54Speaker 4: now I've taught myself to ask him. How old is
- 59:57Speaker 4: he now? He's 23, and he tours with me. Yeah.
- 59:59Speaker 4: He's right next to me.
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: Yeah, sounds like you may pass out flyers a little bit.
- 1:00:03Speaker 4: Better than you. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:00:06Speaker 2: Third down, one thing fame or money cannot solve.
- 1:00:11Speaker 6: Ooh.
- 1:00:12Speaker 2: Oh, man.
- 1:00:14Speaker 4: Oh, man. It doesn't bring that love that you generally seek.
- 1:00:27Speaker 4: When people see you have money....
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: They ought to make you think you're happy and everything is.
- 1:00:33Speaker 4: Yeah. But sometimes I don't think you receive a lot
- 1:00:37Speaker 4: of fake love. And that hurts. And now I have
- 1:00:41Speaker 4: to decipher. And it sucks because I find that not
- 1:00:44Speaker 4: only with friends, but I see it within family. And
- 1:00:47Speaker 4: it hurts. I hate to be brutally honest, but I'm
- 1:00:50Speaker 4: at that point now where I'm really looking through a lens.
- 1:00:55Speaker 4: It hurts.
- 1:00:56Speaker 3: Especially from way on that hill.
- 1:00:58Speaker 4: Yeah, it sucks, man. All right.
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: We're at the goal line. Fourth and goal.
- 1:01:04Speaker 4: Okay. I'm running. What is... I'm not doing a slam
- 1:01:11Speaker 4: for sure.
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: What does Joe want the Joe Coy name to ultimately represent?
- 1:01:19Speaker 4: Oh, man.
- 1:01:20Speaker 2: That's a good one.
- 1:01:22Speaker 4: I want... I'm so sick of everyone putting everybody in
- 1:01:27Speaker 4: a box.
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:01:28Speaker 4: And I feel like we're doing it to ourselves now.
- 1:01:32Speaker 4: Before it used to be like, almost like propagandish, right?
- 1:01:35Speaker 4: Like you get raised and you get fed these certain
- 1:01:39Speaker 4: stereotypes indirectly that you feel like, oh, okay, I have
- 1:01:44Speaker 4: to act a certain way, which is how my come
- 1:01:46Speaker 4: up was. If you watch old Hollywood shit and see
- 1:01:49Speaker 4: how Asians were depicted, not only in cartoons, but even
- 1:01:52Speaker 4: in Hollywood. as an Asian kid struggling with his identity,
- 1:01:55Speaker 4: because I'm half white, half Asian, I'm just watching, oh,
- 1:01:58Speaker 4: you guys laugh at that? Okay, so that's what you
- 1:01:59Speaker 4: want me to be. But now we're past that. But
- 1:02:03Speaker 4: for some reason I find we're putting ourselves in that
- 1:02:07Speaker 4: box for some reason. And saying things we don't need
- 1:02:10Speaker 4: to say anymore. Not just everybody. Like, you know, you
- 1:02:14Speaker 4: find out that I'm a Filipino comic and now you're
- 1:02:17Speaker 4: putting me in a box. It's like, bro, you don't know.
- 1:02:20Speaker 4: I did black rooms. I do Latino rooms. I do
- 1:02:22Speaker 4: white rooms.
- 1:02:24Speaker 2: I got specials.
- 1:02:25Speaker 4: I sell out stadiums.
- 1:02:27Speaker 2: Funny is funny.
- 1:02:28Speaker 4: Funny is funny, bro. That was a tour that I had.
- 1:02:31Speaker 4: My tour was called Funny is Funny. Like, let's stop
- 1:02:35Speaker 4: that nonsense. You know what I mean? Like, we don't
- 1:02:38Speaker 4: need to say things like, man, I hope there's Filipinos there.
- 1:02:41Speaker 4: It's like, I don't need Filipinos there. You know what
- 1:02:43Speaker 4: I mean? It's like, oh, Kevin Hart's going to be
- 1:02:45Speaker 4: in Nashville. Hope there's a lot of black people there.
- 1:02:48Speaker 4: Might be empty. Like, it's dumb. Like, we're not there anymore.
- 1:02:51Speaker 4: Funny's funny. We all get it. I love that. That's
- 1:02:56Speaker 4: my line, too. Like, I love to say, you know,
- 1:02:58Speaker 4: broke has no race. You know what I mean? We
- 1:03:02Speaker 4: have no race. You're identifying with the way my mom
- 1:03:05Speaker 4: raised me as a mom. And you're relating to it. Like,
- 1:03:09Speaker 4: it has nothing to do with me being Filipino. So anyway,
- 1:03:14Speaker 4: that's what I want. I want people to be like, yo,
- 1:03:18Speaker 4: when I see him, I'm just identifying him as a comic.
- 1:03:21Speaker 4: You know what I mean? And not singling him out
- 1:03:23Speaker 4: or putting him in a box.
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: Yeah, it seems like obviously we have closing thoughts, but
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: that almost kind of like segued into our closing thoughts
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: about comics and, like you said, not being put in
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: a box.
- 1:03:35Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:03:36Speaker 2: Funny being funny.
- 1:03:37Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: Funny just being funny.
- 1:03:39Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:03:41Speaker 5: I just want to ask him, and I know we
- 1:03:42Speaker 5: got to go.
- 1:03:43Speaker 3: Producers are flashing us.
- 1:03:46Speaker 4: You got that red light. That red light.
- 1:03:48Speaker 3: I just want to know, what are your latest struggles?
- 1:03:50Speaker 3: It's not the stand-up.
- 1:03:51Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:03:52Speaker 3: You produced and wrote your own movie.
- 1:03:55Speaker 5: Is that something you still want to pursue, doing more
- 1:03:57Speaker 5: movies and independent projects, TV shows?
- 1:04:01Speaker 4: I just want to, you know, I'm happy now.
- 1:04:05Speaker 3: Good.
- 1:04:05Speaker 4: This is what I dreamt about, you know, when I
- 1:04:09Speaker 4: pretended to be Eddie Murphy in my bedroom, you know,
- 1:04:12Speaker 4: talking into my... my box, my boom box with the
- 1:04:16Speaker 4: microphone that I plugged in, just acting like I was
- 1:04:18Speaker 4: doing stand-up. I'm at this pinnacle now. Now I want
- 1:04:23Speaker 4: to direct. You know what I mean? I want to
- 1:04:24Speaker 4: shoot specials and really direct. I don't want to be
- 1:04:27Speaker 4: a shot caller and call myself a director. I really
- 1:04:29Speaker 4: want to hands-on help you write it out. Not write
- 1:04:33Speaker 4: it out, but just figure out the storyboard. Really create
- 1:04:37Speaker 4: with you and find out your voice, and then we'll
- 1:04:40Speaker 4: shoot that because I think that's so important. I love it. Yeah, man.
- 1:04:44Speaker 3: It's great seeing you here, man.
- 1:04:46Speaker 4: I love you.
- 1:04:46Speaker 3: I love you back.
- 1:04:47Speaker 4: You're the best.
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: No, I appreciate it, man. We thank you, man. I mean,
- 1:04:51Speaker 2: this is good, man.
- 1:04:53Speaker 3: Wait till you watch these fucking specials, and.
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: You'll see the growth. No, September 15th, right?
- 1:04:57Speaker 4: Yeah. Yes. Yeah. But I wish you could watch all
- 1:05:00Speaker 4: of them.
- 1:05:00Speaker 3: No, I'm going to give it to him in order.
- 1:05:03Speaker 4: Oh, that'd be great.
- 1:05:04Speaker 3: So you can watch all of them. You can see
- 1:05:05Speaker 3: his fucking hair go away.
- 1:05:07Speaker 4: Can I tell one more story? I know you guys
- 1:05:08Speaker 4: got to go. But there's one more that I love.
- 1:05:11Speaker 4: This one is truly like my favorite because Biggie was
- 1:05:13Speaker 4: such an inspiration to me. My first show ever in
- 1:05:17Speaker 4: New York, I forgot what it was called. It was
- 1:05:20Speaker 4: at New York Comedy Club. It was like a dungeon.
- 1:05:22Speaker 4: It was horrible. I can't even remember the name of it. Anyway,
- 1:05:25Speaker 4: I had a Walkman, the kind where you had to
- 1:05:26Speaker 4: hold it like this because if you bounced too hard,
- 1:05:28Speaker 4: it would skip. You know what I mean? It was
- 1:05:30Speaker 4: the yellow one. The yellow sports man. And Biggie just
- 1:05:33Speaker 4: came out. Biggie's double came out, right? The double CD
- 1:05:37Speaker 4: came out. And it was... Ready to Die? Yeah. No, no.
- 1:05:41Speaker 4: The second one. Oh, yeah. No, not Ready to Die. Anyway,
- 1:05:45Speaker 4: it's the double, right? And it's the one Mo' Money Mo'
- 1:05:48Speaker 4: Problems just came out, right? And I got that on.
- 1:05:52Speaker 4: And once it ends, start right back over. Repeat, repeat.
- 1:05:56Speaker 4: I'm just walking around New York by myself. You know, just...
- 1:05:59Speaker 4: killing time before I had to do this set and
- 1:06:02Speaker 4: I'm just playing Biggie. Oh, oh, oh, right? Just nonstop, right?
- 1:06:06Speaker 4: So anyway, that's my New York moment. Now I'm shooting Brooklyn,
- 1:06:10Speaker 4: my special for Netflix.
- 1:06:11Speaker 3: Fucking dope.
- 1:06:12Speaker 4: And I do this thing where I talk about my
- 1:06:14Speaker 4: son and his generation with the mumble and how I
- 1:06:19Speaker 4: still feel our generation is still the golden era, and
- 1:06:23Speaker 4: still to this day the best era, right? And I
- 1:06:26Speaker 4: do this thing where I'm battling with my son, that
- 1:06:29Speaker 4: I talk about on stage, and I do the differences,
- 1:06:32Speaker 4: and then finally I drop the biggie beat, and I
- 1:06:34Speaker 4: told my DJ, do not press play, because we don't
- 1:06:37Speaker 4: own the rights to it, I'll just do the bit, right?
- 1:06:40Speaker 4: My boy hit play, right?
- 1:06:42Speaker 3: Fucking theater went bananas.
- 1:06:44Speaker 4: Went bananas. I do the bit, but I know I
- 1:06:46Speaker 4: don't own the fucking, I haven't gotten the licensing for
- 1:06:49Speaker 4: it yet. So I go backstage and I'm like, I
- 1:06:52Speaker 4: look at, you know, Joanne and all that. I'm like,
- 1:06:54Speaker 4: I'll buy it. You know, I'll make sure to buy it.
- 1:06:56Speaker 4: We'll get it in this thing. So anyway, I buy
- 1:06:58Speaker 4: the bit. I license the bit. You know, I need specifics.
- 1:07:02Speaker 3: How much was that needle drop?
- 1:07:04Speaker 4: That, for 15 seconds, it cost me almost $ 75, 000. Oh,
- 1:07:07Speaker 4: that's not bad. Yeah, it wasn't that bad.
- 1:07:10Speaker 3: I was thinking like $ 130, 000.
- 1:07:11Speaker 4: No, we negotiated. I think it was almost like $ 80, 000. Oh,
- 1:07:14Speaker 4: that's worth it. Yeah, yeah. It was worth it. So
- 1:07:16Speaker 4: I dropped the bit. It goes viral, right? Viral. Everyone's
- 1:07:20Speaker 4: throwing it around and shit. And to the point where
- 1:07:24Speaker 4: I'm on the phone with Mrs. Wallace, right? I'm on
- 1:07:28Speaker 4: the phone with Mrs. Wallace, and she's like, Thank you
- 1:07:31Speaker 4: so much for playing.
- 1:07:32Speaker 3: Wait, no, what did you make an accent?
- 1:07:33Speaker 4: It's so hard, but so beautiful though. She talks so
- 1:07:36Speaker 4: soft like that. Thank you for doing this for my son.
- 1:07:39Speaker 4: Everyone's going to know my son's name because his legacy
- 1:07:42Speaker 4: is going to be on Netflix forever because of you.
- 1:07:44Speaker 4: So thank you so much for saying what you said
- 1:07:46Speaker 4: about my son. It means so much to me. I go, Mrs. Wallace,
- 1:07:49Speaker 4: we all love your son. And of course it's going
- 1:07:52Speaker 4: to be on Netflix forever because you charge me so
- 1:07:55Speaker 4: much money. Joe Coy, ladies and gentlemen. Oh shit, sorry.
- 1:07:59Speaker 4: There's one more. Oh, sorry. She gives me the rights
- 1:08:03Speaker 4: to his face. So, you know, the iconic shot of
- 1:08:06Speaker 4: him wearing the hat, the crown. So she gives me
- 1:08:09Speaker 4: the licensing, right? So big shout out to Rick. He owns,
- 1:08:14Speaker 4: but he's part of that whole, you know, that whole
- 1:08:18Speaker 4: Wallace Foundation thing. And literally I have the okay. Because
- 1:08:23Speaker 4: she passed after that.
- 1:08:24Speaker 3: To do whatever you want with that.
- 1:08:25Speaker 4: To make the shirt. So I wrote the quote on
- 1:08:27Speaker 4: the back of my shirt. And then it's his face.
- 1:08:30Speaker 4: And it says, spread love. It's the Brooklyn way.
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: Right?
- 1:08:32Speaker 4: And then it has my quote about Biggie on the back.
- 1:08:35Speaker 4: And when you buy the shirt, we just donate to
- 1:08:37Speaker 4: the Wallace Foundation.
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: Oh, wow.
- 1:08:39Speaker 4: That's awesome. Big shot. By the way, it's the last
- 1:08:42Speaker 4: collab she ever did before she passed. So I got
- 1:08:45Speaker 4: the last collab. So you see it. It says, notorious B.I.G.
- 1:08:49Speaker 4: times Joe Coy. So I just wanted to shout that out.
- 1:08:52Speaker 3: And you brought us some shirts?
- 1:08:53Speaker 4: Yeah, it's $ 45. No, no, no, I got you everything
- 1:08:57Speaker 4: you want. Yeah, I need one of those, bro.
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: Yeah, please.
- 1:08:59Speaker 4: I would love for you to rock that. Yeah, for sure.
- 1:09:01Speaker 3: Ladies and gentlemen, the Joe Coy.
- 1:09:04Speaker 4: Oh, I love you. Thank you.
- 1:09:05Speaker 2: Appreciate you, bro.
