- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome back to the Elon Musk podcast.
- 0:05This is a show where we discuss the critical crossroads, the
- 0:08shape, SpaceX, Tesla X, The Boring Company and Neuralink.
- 0:13I'm your host, Will Walden, and on this episode we're going to
- 0:17be talking about IFT 4 some because that just happened,
- 0:20which is really great. It turned out pretty great for a
- 0:24SpaceX. Also, we're going to be talking
- 0:26about what's next for Starship, IFT 5, IFT 6 possibly.
- 0:31And then we're going to get into some of the next thing, which is
- 0:36a huge deal. SpaceX and Starship on the
- 0:41surface of Mars, retrieving some samples.
- 0:46What's that all about? OK, so let's go to IFT 4.
- 0:50It happened yesterday. Absolutely as perfect as you can
- 0:54get for this flight. What SpaceX was aiming to do for
- 0:59this is to soft land the booster in the Gulf of Mexico, which
- 1:04they performed. Florida State, Absolutely
- 1:07perfect. There's one.
- 1:08Raptor out. But that's OK.
- 1:09As they flew out, it was fine. Everything was fine.
- 1:13All the systems work great. Booster landed in the Gulf of
- 1:16Mexico. They tip it over.
- 1:20It's in the Gulf of Mexico now somewhere and it's about 7
- 1:24minutes into the flight that all happened.
- 1:28Boost back burned, everything was great, and then stage
- 1:31separation, everything perfect. Everything was perfect,
- 1:34everything looked great. And then the ship kept going.
- 1:38The ship separated, kept going all the way to the Indian Ocean,
- 1:44did the belly flop maneuver, which who knew that was going to
- 1:49happen and who knew if that was going to be successful.
- 1:51SpaceX had a pretty good hunch that it was going to be
- 1:53successful and they did all the engineering possible to make it
- 1:57successful. And what we saw was the Starship
- 2:03going through the atmosphere, going as.
- 2:06Hot as possible. And then soft landing after it
- 2:11did the kick maneuver so it could go straight vertical and
- 2:15soft landed in the Indian Ocean. Perfect.
- 2:19We didn't have any video of it landing, but they did hear the
- 2:24Raptors roar. As it touched.
- 2:27Down soft landing in the Indian Ocean.
- 2:30Now this is for IFT 4. So IFT 4 is a massive success
- 2:35for Starship. Not only did they successfully
- 2:38do this mission, but now they set themselves up for the next
- 2:42few missions. And what they?
- 2:44Can accomplish now before IFT 4 started, before they even
- 2:49launched the thing, Elon was on social media, he was talking
- 2:53about what's next, what's up for IFT five?
- 2:57Well, he wants to continue down this path.
- 2:59The same thing he wants to nail the landing.
- 3:02He wants to make sure the Starship lands in the Indian
- 3:04Ocean, but he wants to make sure that the booster lands at
- 3:10Starbase, on the chopsticks at Boca Chica, Texas, next to the
- 3:17Gulf of Mexico, on land at their facility where they launched
- 3:23these things. Not in the Gulf of Mexico where
- 3:26it's safe, where they won't destroy anything if they mess up
- 3:30or. Nowhere close.
- 3:32To land they, you know, like IFT 4 was nowhere close to land.
- 3:36So the IFT 4 incident report will be much less than IFT.
- 3:41Three. Because nothing really happened
- 3:44that was out of the ordinary. This is exactly what they
- 3:46wanted. So landing the booster in the
- 3:49Gulf of Mexico and landing the ship in the Indian Ocean.
- 3:52Exactly what they wanted. So IFT 5 Elon wants to bring the
- 3:57booster back to the star base facility after only doing one
- 4:04test of the landing of the booster.
- 4:09Is this kind of an insane idea? And he was on Ellie in space
- 4:15too. She interviewed him.
- 4:16Go. Check out that interview, it's
- 4:17great. But watch this whole thing
- 4:19first. I need I need the the watch time
- 4:23so. She interviewed him, he was
- 4:26adamant about landing it. He's super excited about landing
- 4:28it for IFT 5. Are they going to?
- 4:31Do that. I'm not 100% sure if they will.
- 4:35It seems like Elon wants to and if they get enough data from the
- 4:38booster landing, this shows that they were absolutely pinpoint
- 4:42precision in the Gulf of Mexico. I don't see why they.
- 4:46Wouldn't try it. Other than there's not a really
- 4:51more than one test case. Whenever you do engineering,
- 4:55whenever you do science, anything, when you're testing,
- 4:58coding anything, test it against a few different things.
- 5:01Test it a few times, test it three or four times.
- 5:04Make sure everything works properly because the next one,
- 5:07there might be something that's. Busted on it.
- 5:08Might be something that's not exactly perfect, and it might
- 5:11not land precisely, but even in that case you could.
- 5:15Detonate it over the Gulf of Mexico if you.
- 5:17See something? 'S wrong.
- 5:19But what happens if something's wrong in the last few seconds or
- 5:22the last, I don't know, 20 seconds when it's over?
- 5:27Starbase ready to land? Well, that's a.
- 5:30Whole different thing. And yes, the.
- 5:33Booster is about 250 feet tall, it's made out of stainless steel
- 5:38and it's absolutely massive. So if it does come into Starbase
- 5:42scream in a hot and they can't destroy it on its way back,
- 5:46well, there's going to be some problems.
- 5:48And that's something that I don't know if the SpaceX
- 5:50engineers will push back against with Elon, because sometimes
- 5:55Elon pushes back against them. There was early times in Space
- 5:59XS history that the engineers want to do something with carbon
- 6:03fiber or some sort of synthetic. And Elon pushback said, hey,
- 6:08let's do this in stainless steel because stainless steel's easy
- 6:11to get, It's easy to manufacture.
- 6:14And also we can ramp this up really fast because we have to
- 6:18iterate these designs. We have to do hundreds of these
- 6:21rockets in order to make life on Mars a thing.
- 6:25So do you think the engineers are going to set like push back
- 6:28on Elon? I don't know.
- 6:30That's going to be, that's going to be a tough one for the
- 6:32engineers because Elon's the head of engineering over there.
- 6:35He's the head of everything. So if they push back against
- 6:38him, I don't know I I think that they should wait a few times
- 6:43I've talked about this before, but I do think they should wait
- 6:45a few times before they actually land the rocket back at starbase
- 6:52just to make sure that everything is absolutely
- 6:54accurate with the landing. Let me know in the comments down
- 6:57below if you think it'll land on the.
- 6:59Fifth attempt IFT 5. Now there's something else that
- 7:06Elon and company over at SpaceX are going to be part of in the
- 7:10near future. Well, I would shouldn't say near
- 7:12future, but in the future with NASA, this is a huge deal.
- 7:16So right now we have a Rover on Mars which is collecting samples
- 7:20of soil and possible life, you know, old life on Mars.
- 7:28And they need some way to go pick up those canisters.
- 7:32And Eli and the company of SpaceX have just won a.
- 7:34Contract with NASA. To go try, and I shouldn't say
- 7:40go try and pick it up yet, but they're going to demonstrate how
- 7:42they could pick up these little canisters like this big, like I
- 7:47don't know how to say it on the screen, but about that big of
- 7:53Martian soil, Martian, Martian regolith that could contain
- 7:57ancient life. So if they get this contract,
- 8:02it's like a $1.8 million contract around there, almost
- 8:06$2,000,000. I think it's 1.5 actually.
- 8:09Then if they do this properly, SpaceX would be launching a
- 8:14Starship to Mars. But the Starship alone can't get
- 8:19the the samples of the regolith of the soil from Mars.
- 8:23They have to have some sort of Rover.
- 8:25So SpaceX may fit what I think they're gonna do.
- 8:29I think they're gonna get a cyber truck and put it on Mars
- 8:33and equip it with something, I don't know, or maybe a small
- 8:35Rover, I'm not sure. But they can fit a massive
- 8:38amount of things into a Starship.
- 8:40So whatever they have to do, whatever they have to do,
- 8:43whoever they have to team with to get another Rover down there
- 8:45to go pick up all these samples. I think SpaceX will one.
- 8:51They're already partnered with NASA to land on the moon, right?
- 8:54They're already partnered with NASA to fly astronauts.
- 8:57They're already partnered with NASA for all the Falcon Nine
- 9:01things. So Starship, once it's proven on
- 9:06the moon, could easily, I shouldn't say easily because
- 9:11engineering's super hard, but they could make it.
- 9:15And Elon has said this, that it's easier to land on Mars than
- 9:18it is on the moon because there's actually some gravity
- 9:21there. And it, it'll be a fun, fun
- 9:27thing to watch if they can actually get the Starship to
- 9:31Mars, land it, and then a Rover pops out of the Hatch.
- 9:36Or what if they send people to Mars?
- 9:39What if that's their proposal? What if what their proposal
- 9:43isn't, hey, we're going to send a Rover like everybody else.
- 9:47We have 4 astronauts that are willing to do this and we can
- 9:50train them, we can give them space suits, we can do
- 9:52everything. And they can walk on Mars, go
- 9:55grab these samples, bring them back.
- 9:59And maybe there's a Rover that would look like a cyber truck
- 10:02that they drive around to get these samples.
- 10:05That would be, they'll be so cool, but that's all speculation
- 10:10right now. They haven't won the contract
- 10:12yet and they have a little while to do this.
- 10:15So we're going to keep our ears and eyes open to see what
- 10:18happens with this. But this, that's a huge, huge
- 10:20deal. Now, IFT 6, what's going to be
- 10:23happening with that? We're not 100% sure because if
- 10:26they try to do the landing at Starbase, then IFT 6 is going to
- 10:31be similar to what they do with IT5 unless IFT 5 completely
- 10:34fails, then they'll go back to the drawing board and go back to
- 10:37the go back to the Gulf of Mexico.
- 10:39But IFT 6, IFT 7, not 100% sure what they're going to be doing.
- 10:43But if they do land a booster on IFT five, I think IFT 6, they're
- 10:49going to try to go to orbit and I think they're going to launch
- 10:53a few Starlink satellites just as a test.
- 10:55Even one would be a a great test.
