- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to a meeting of the minds, crafted from decades
- 0:05Speaker 1: of talk show experience. An extension of the magic they've
- 0:09Speaker 1: created together on radio in the phenomenon called M & M.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Hot topics in the news and wisdom from life. It's
- 0:17Speaker 1: Mark Davis and Mike Gallagher. This is M & M Extra.
- 0:21Speaker 2: M & M Oh, the weather outside is frightful, but
- 0:27Speaker 2: the fire is so.
- 0:29Speaker 3: It's holiday day. Can't sing that anymore. That song has
- 0:32Speaker 3: been canceled.
- 0:33Speaker 2: No, no, no. Baby, it's cold outside.
- 0:35Speaker 3: Maybe it's cold outside.
- 0:36Speaker 2: Baby, it's cold outside.
- 0:37Speaker 1: Take two.
- 0:38Speaker 3: Good Lord.
- 0:39Speaker 2: Welcome in to a holiday edition of Eminem Extra. I'm Mike.
- 0:43Speaker 2: He's Mark. Portions of this are sponsored by Preborn. where

- 0:58Speaker 2: Mark and I have decided that Fridays are theme day.
- 1:01Speaker 2: We're going to do a theme podcast Friday. Am I
- 1:04Speaker 2: saying that out of order? Theme podcast?
- 1:07Speaker 3: A theme day. A theme day. Yes, a theme day.
- 1:10Speaker 2: So we thought, why don't we– you and I are
- 1:13Speaker 2: both in this odd place where we're both excited about–
- 1:17Speaker 2: We're excited about Halloween. Yep. We're excited about Thanksgiving. Yep.
- 1:21Speaker 2: We're excited about Christmas. Yes. So why don't we take today,
- 1:24Speaker 2: on this Friday in the middle of October, and talk
- 1:28Speaker 2: about holidays. Talk about Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, our family memories.
- 1:34Speaker 2: Because you and I talked about this yesterday. Isn't it
- 1:37Speaker 2: weird how we're both like strangely excited about all the
- 1:41Speaker 2: holidays this year?
- 1:42Speaker 3: It's not that we are usually slow and lethargic to
- 1:46Speaker 3: awaken to. It varies for me. Usually by the time,
- 1:50Speaker 3: usually the coming and going of Halloween gets me kind of,
- 1:54Speaker 3: gets my pump primed. It's like, okay. Here comes Thanksgiving.
- 1:57Speaker 3: It's like, all right, we slog through that. But for
- 2:01Speaker 3: some reason here in the middle of October, I'm right
- 2:02Speaker 3: there in step with you. We're vibing that I'm ready
- 2:06Speaker 3: for all three of them. And they're going to come
- 2:08Speaker 3: so fast. I was writing a little promo that'll run
- 2:12Speaker 3: the sort of the little blurb that accompanies each episode.
- 2:15Speaker 3: And I wanted to say that in the coming fill-in-the-blank days—
- 2:18Speaker 3: All three of these will unfold. I thought maybe 100, whatever. Mike,
- 2:23Speaker 3: it's 77. 77 days from now, it's New Year's Eve,
- 2:26Speaker 3: and we're done. The entire trifecta is... And 77 days
- 2:29Speaker 3: ago was like the beginning of August. I mean, so
- 2:32Speaker 3: this is how fast time goes. And so I am ready.
- 2:36Speaker 3: You are ready. So let us begin with the world
- 2:39Speaker 3: of Halloween, Mike. How did Halloween play out for a
- 2:43Speaker 3: young Mike Gallagher?
- 2:44Speaker 2: Well, I loved it as much as any other kid.
- 2:46Speaker 2: I mean, I think obviously it was all about the candy.
- 2:49Speaker 2: My mom did her best to teach me that it
- 2:52Speaker 2: wasn't just about getting, you know. We made a big
- 2:55Speaker 2: deal about making sure we had a good spread. We
- 2:57Speaker 2: had the good candy in our household.
- 2:59Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 3:00Speaker 2: You know, you can't hand out little kernels of, you know,
- 3:04Speaker 2: corn or something. You can't do something stupid.
- 3:07Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:08Speaker 2: I mean, some people– apples. Who put– and then, of course,
- 3:12Speaker 2: that stuff. You know?
- 3:14Speaker 3: Apples. Who the hell gives out an apple? I've been
- 3:16Speaker 3: trick-or-treating for a flippin' apple. That's not why I'm here, Mama.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Pardon me. I'm not here for fruits and vegetables. I
- 3:22Speaker 2: want the good stuff. I want Reese's. I mean, and
- 3:25Speaker 2: I'll tell you, can I give a quick tip of
- 3:27Speaker 2: the hat, talking about candy selections, to something they do
- 3:31Speaker 2: at Disney called Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween. Yes. Now, it's hard
- 3:36Speaker 2: to get tickets. There are certain nights all through October.
- 3:40Speaker 1: Yes.
- 3:40Speaker 2: I think September as well, but all through Halloween, where
- 3:44Speaker 2: they turn the whole park into Halloween.
- 3:47Speaker 1: Cool.
- 3:48Speaker 2: Now, what they do, Mark, besides the cool shows they do,
- 3:51Speaker 2: they do a stage show every year that is a
- 3:53Speaker 2: tribute to Hocus Pocus. That funny, great, dark— it' s pretty dark— movie
- 4:00Speaker 2: with Bette Midler and Kathy Najimy and Sarah Jessica Parker.
- 4:03Speaker 2: They played the Sanderson sisters there. And of course it
- 4:06Speaker 2: was musical because they, you know, bet saying, I've got
- 4:09Speaker 2: a spell, put a spell on you. And now you're mine.
- 4:13Speaker 2: They do a whole stage show right in front of
- 4:15Speaker 2: Cinderella castle. And yes, Disney fanatics, it's Cinderella castle, not
- 4:19Speaker 2: Cinderella's castle. I know how to pronounce it. They do
- 4:23Speaker 2: a big stage show of hocus pocus so that, but
- 4:27Speaker 2: they not only that, but it's like at night, it's
- 4:29Speaker 2: like after four or five or six in the evening,
- 4:31Speaker 2: you get special admission to the park at magic, only
- 4:34Speaker 2: magic kingdom. But they have trick-or-treat candy stations all over
- 4:39Speaker 2: the park. They give you a bag. Mark, when I
- 4:43Speaker 2: tell you that the people that hand out the candy
- 4:46Speaker 2: give you the honkinest, hugest handfuls of candy. So here's
- 4:51Speaker 2: all these 66-year-old men like me lining up like a
- 4:54Speaker 2: kid again on trick-or-treat to get candy. And it's the
- 4:58Speaker 2: good stuff. It's Skittles. Big bags of Skittles. It's Reese's.
- 5:04Speaker 2: It's the big stuff. And I don't know, I guess,
- 5:07Speaker 2: I think it's Mars Candy that they partner with. But
- 5:10Speaker 2: whoever the big candy manufacturer is, they must give them,
- 5:14Speaker 2: I'm not kidding you, millions of dollars worth of candy
- 5:17Speaker 2: every year for this thing. They have these giant vats
- 5:20Speaker 2: of candy and the lines, wrapper, and they have stations
- 5:24Speaker 2: all throughout the theme park. And, of course, I can't
- 5:27Speaker 2: eat any of it anymore. I'm not going to eat
- 5:28Speaker 2: all that sugar. I was going to say, is this
- 5:30Speaker 2: just a principal thing for you? Do you come out
- 5:32Speaker 2: and distribute it to local children there at the condo?
- 5:35Speaker 2: I give it to all. I give it to the
- 5:36Speaker 2: people here at the office. I give it to Tracy,
- 5:39Speaker 2: the bag. She's got a granddaughter. She's got a little
- 5:42Speaker 2: kid in her. And I will say that I miss
- 5:44Speaker 2: that about– since I've lived in a high-rise now for
- 5:47Speaker 2: the last– decade or more, I don't get any trick-or-treaters.
- 5:51Speaker 3: I've not had active trick-or-treating at a home of mine
- 5:54Speaker 3: in a long time.
- 5:55Speaker 2: Really? You don't get it at the house? Well, of course,
- 5:58Speaker 2: at the compound, they can't get past the guards. We're
- 6:00Speaker 2: relating to the common man because Mike is in this
- 6:02Speaker 2: palatial condo and I've got three acres. Yeah, you've got
- 6:08Speaker 2: guards engaged.
- 6:09Speaker 3: We get trick-or-treaters, but they're exhausted from walking to the
- 6:12Speaker 3: front door.
- 6:12Speaker 2: They can't go down the driveway. They collapse when they
- 6:15Speaker 2: finally get to the house.
- 6:16Speaker 3: I'm so sorry.
- 6:17Speaker 2: I mean, it's embarrassing.
- 6:19Speaker 3: This was a terrible idea.
- 6:24Speaker 2: 1% is bragging about our no trick-or-treaters. Yeah, this was
- 6:28Speaker 2: a great idea. On paper, this looked good.
- 6:30Speaker 1: Oh, gosh.
- 6:32Speaker 2: And I've been to the Davis compound. That ain't exactly
- 6:34Speaker 2: a double-wide. By the way, can I say something quick
- 6:38Speaker 2: about houses and homes and the value of something? I
- 6:43Speaker 2: got a thank-you card for a wedding gift I gave
- 6:46Speaker 2: to a young couple. This is so cool that I'm
- 6:49Speaker 2: going to share this and you're going to love this.
- 6:50Speaker 2: And I've probably done it to your house too. You
- 6:53Speaker 2: can do this now. Do you know if you know
- 6:56Speaker 2: somebody's address, you pop it in the old internets and
- 7:00Speaker 2: you're going to get the square footage. You're going to
- 7:02Speaker 2: get the price tag. Zillow, you bet. You go to
- 7:06Speaker 2: Zillow and it'll get, so this young couple sent me
- 7:08Speaker 2: a thank you card. Now they're doing real, they're doing
- 7:11Speaker 2: pretty well. And one of them is a performer. I'll
- 7:14Speaker 2: just put it to that. I'm not going to say
- 7:15Speaker 2: who it is. but one of them is in show business. Well,
- 7:19Speaker 2: it's paying good because I found out, I looked up
- 7:21Speaker 2: their address.
- 7:22Speaker 3: I have totally done this. You run across somebody, if
- 7:24Speaker 3: there's somebody who you have any curiosity about, or you don't,
- 7:27Speaker 3: or maybe you just get their address, and for some
- 7:29Speaker 3: reason you think, huh, wonder what kind of house they
- 7:32Speaker 3: live in.
- 7:33Speaker 2: You do that too? Totally. Well, that's so smarmy of
- 7:37Speaker 2: both of us. How creepy are we that we're like
- 7:41Speaker 2: stalking the person's house? And I thought, they're in a house,
- 7:44Speaker 2: 1.4 million. I mean, they're a young couple, and they're
- 7:49Speaker 2: doing well in life. Good for them. Good for them.
- 7:52Speaker 2: So that's why I don't want anybody to ever know
- 7:54Speaker 2: my address. That's why I use a post office box.
- 7:55Speaker 2: Exactly right. All right. So you and I, being part
- 7:59Speaker 2: of the common man, we've never seen trick-or-treaters in the
- 8:01Speaker 2: last 30 years. But I love that experience. It's like
- 8:05Speaker 2: you get to see all these cute kids, and they trick-or-treat,
- 8:08Speaker 2: and you get to see what they've got out there
- 8:10Speaker 2: and everything else. It's a neat tradition, but there's a
- 8:13Speaker 2: lot of people, Mark, let's face it, let's stipulate, that
- 8:16Speaker 2: absolutely are repulsed by it. They think it's satanic. They
- 8:20Speaker 2: think it's got dark, evil overtones.
- 8:23Speaker 3: Then don't do it. Don't project that on other people.
- 8:26Speaker 3: And raise your kids religiously however you like. But it's
- 8:29Speaker 3: always been a little tricky. I mean, are the roots
- 8:32Speaker 3: of it a little occultish? They may well be. But
- 8:36Speaker 3: that's not what it is. It's in the practice of it.
- 8:38Speaker 3: It's dress up like Spider-Man and go get some peanut
- 8:40Speaker 3: butter cups. That's what it is. And you don't have
- 8:43Speaker 3: to do it. But I've always felt That if you're
- 8:46Speaker 3: a mom and a dad and you're and you're beating
- 8:48Speaker 3: your six year old to death with the concept that
- 8:51Speaker 3: Halloween is evil and then he goes to school, what's
- 8:54Speaker 3: he going to think about every single classmate he has?
- 8:56Speaker 3: I'm surrounded by, you know, devil kids. That's just it's
- 9:00Speaker 3: just a. That's just really unfortunate.
- 9:03Speaker 2: But it's hard, though, because I want to be respectful
- 9:06Speaker 2: of people who have really deep religious beliefs. You've got
- 9:09Speaker 2: me in a little bit of a quandary with the
- 9:11Speaker 2: prayer that you've inspired me to say every day on
- 9:14Speaker 2: my show. I say a prayer. You started your show
- 9:18Speaker 2: on KSKY during COVID. You start with a prayer. And
- 9:22Speaker 2: I thought, you know what? Prayer matters. We're 18 days
- 9:25Speaker 2: away from this important midterm election season. It's in God's
- 9:29Speaker 2: hands and in the voters' hands, and we better show
- 9:31Speaker 2: up and we please, Lord, God, let us win and
- 9:34Speaker 2: not let these really, really, frankly, in some cases, demonic
- 9:39Speaker 2: Democrats win. And so prayer matters, and I love to pray.
- 9:42Speaker 2: Do you know I'm in a big controversy right now,
- 9:44Speaker 2: and some people are mad at me, because when I
- 9:47Speaker 2: first started praying, I ended the prayer, in your holy
- 9:50Speaker 2: name we pray, amen.
- 9:52Speaker 3: That's all I said.
- 9:53Speaker 2: Well, people were offended by that because they said, but
- 9:56Speaker 2: you're not saying the name of Jesus. And I thought, well, okay.
- 10:01Speaker 2: So then I started adding, in your holy name we pray,
- 10:04Speaker 2: in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.
- 10:06Speaker 3: Then you got angry Jews on the phone.
- 10:08Speaker 2: I got angry Jews saying, Mike— And you don't.
- 10:10Speaker 3: Want to mess with angry Jews.
- 10:12Speaker 2: Well, I mean, but all kidding aside, I want everybody
- 10:16Speaker 2: to feel included. You know, I hope I'm not turning
- 10:19Speaker 2: into DEI Debbie here, but I do want people not
- 10:23Speaker 2: to be turned off by the prayer. But I will say,
- 10:27Speaker 2: can you help me understand why there's a resistance to
- 10:32Speaker 2: not including Jesus' actual name in your holy name we pray?
- 10:36Speaker 3: Here's what I did, and I've made it until now
- 10:39Speaker 3: that we've included everybody onto it. Now I'm going to
- 10:41Speaker 3: catch all kinds of grief. I did the Judeo-Christian approach
- 10:46Speaker 3: as well. When I sat down and started this, because
- 10:48Speaker 3: I'm all about Jesus, I am an evangelical Christian. That
- 10:50Speaker 3: is me. So when I did this, I thought for
- 10:52Speaker 3: the X percent that may not be with me on that,
- 10:55Speaker 3: but who are absolutely, I believe that the Jews are
- 10:57Speaker 3: my faith ancestors, nothing but respect. Evangelical Christians care more
- 11:01Speaker 3: about Israel than a lot of American Jews do by
- 11:04Speaker 3: their voting patterns. More on that on another episode. So
- 11:07Speaker 3: I did, I talked about God and wrapped it up
- 11:09Speaker 3: in your holy name.
- 11:10Speaker 2: Amen. And you don't say Jesus?
- 11:12Speaker 3: I do not. But I'll tell you what, not in
- 11:15Speaker 3: that moment, I'm going to be, I've decided I'm going
- 11:17Speaker 3: to be, I hope this word's not bad anymore, inclusive.
- 11:20Speaker 3: And by that, I mean- Have you gotten flack for it?
- 11:22Speaker 3: Not one moment of it.
- 11:24Speaker 2: Not one.
- 11:24Speaker 3: Because listen, anybody who listens to me for three minutes
- 11:28Speaker 3: knows that Jesus has wrapped around every step I take
- 11:31Speaker 3: and every word I breathe. So if I'm going to
- 11:34Speaker 3: be a little Judeo-Christian about the prayer, then everybody tends
- 11:38Speaker 3: to be okay with it, or.
- 11:38Speaker 2: They haven't been so far. I want you to get
- 11:41Speaker 2: crap for it, too. I want you to get the
- 11:46Speaker 2: ire of these deeply faithful people who are mad at
- 11:48Speaker 2: me because I don't say the actual name of Jesus.
- 11:51Speaker 2: I am so glad. But no, it's an interesting dynamic,
- 11:55Speaker 2: and it gives us reason to be thankful. Speaking of
- 11:58Speaker 2: thankfulness and why we love doing this together, Let's talk
- 12:01Speaker 2: about our Thanksgiving history and our Thanksgiving traditions after I
- 12:04Speaker 2: share my thankfulness for Relief Factor every day on the radio,
- 12:09Speaker 2: on Salem News Channel, on M & M Extra. We
- 12:11Speaker 2: get to sing the praises of why we're thankful for
- 12:15Speaker 2: Relief Factor. Tommy wrote in, there are times of the
- 12:18Speaker 2: year when I can barely walk on my right knee.
- 12:20Speaker 2: When I first started, I took it for two days. Man,
- 12:23Speaker 2: I was springing around like a kid. Mark, you've had
- 12:25Speaker 2: that experience when we decided to do this podcast together.
- 12:28Speaker 2: And the good people at Relief Factor said, we're going
- 12:30Speaker 2: to help sponsor it. They wanted you in. You went in.
- 12:33Speaker 2: And now you're all in.
- 12:34Speaker 3: Yeah, as luck would have it, the timing is great
- 12:36Speaker 3: because I've known about Relief Factor and done shows from
- 12:38Speaker 3: the Relief Factor studios forever. And when the idea arose
- 12:42Speaker 3: of me actually using it, I thought it was lovely,
- 12:45Speaker 3: but I don't really have any pain issues. Eventually, you're
- 12:48Speaker 3: going to have pain issues. And I had a little
- 12:49Speaker 3: rotator cuff thing in the shoulder taken care of. And
- 12:52Speaker 3: then being 68 years old, there's that sort of early
- 12:54Speaker 3: morning achiness that can happen when you first get up
- 12:56Speaker 3: a couple of minutes before you shake that off.
- 12:58Speaker 2: Not anymore.
- 12:59Speaker 3: It's just a non-issue for me now because of my
- 13:01Speaker 3: friends at Relief Factor. And you can find this same
- 13:03Speaker 3: kind of success story yourself for just $ 17. 76. Good patriotic
- 13:07Speaker 3: price for the three-week quick start. ReliefFactor.com. ReliefFactor.com. Or just
- 13:12Speaker 3: the simple number 1-800-4. The number 4-1-800-4. Relief and see
- 13:16Speaker 3: what it can do for you.
- 13:18Speaker 2: Okay. If we're excited about Halloween, let's ramp it up here.
- 13:22Speaker 2: We're going to go up on the excitement chart to Thanksgiving. Oh,
- 13:25Speaker 2: my gosh.
- 13:25Speaker 3: But can I– I just– I got to do something.
- 13:28Speaker 2: Okay.
- 13:29Speaker 3: There's, there's a character that I want to introduce.
- 13:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:34Speaker 3: It is mildly presumptuous. Mike mildly presumptuous. Mike makes his
- 13:40Speaker 3: appearances sometimes at the end of podcast episodes, as he did,
- 13:44Speaker 3: I think yesterday, mildly presumptuous. Mike looks at the clock
- 13:48Speaker 3: and we're all looking at the clock and presumes that
- 13:51Speaker 3: we are done when I like have a couple of
- 13:53Speaker 3: more things left, you know, to share.
- 13:55Speaker 2: Sure.
- 13:56Speaker 3: And I don't want to step on that. You know,
- 13:59Speaker 3: it's like there's always tomorrow. So, you know, I kind
- 14:02Speaker 3: of I kind of got up and move on. But
- 14:06Speaker 3: I got I got and maybe this is the danger
- 14:09Speaker 3: of us. We're sitting here looking at this holiday episode.
- 14:12Speaker 3: We might need to do a Halloween, a Thanksgiving and
- 14:15Speaker 3: a Christmas. We'll we'll shoehorn it real quick today. But
- 14:18Speaker 3: there may be another full Thanksgiving coming and a full
- 14:21Speaker 3: Christmas to be sure. But there were two things that
- 14:23Speaker 3: I really wanted to do Halloween-wise. I'll make them real
- 14:26Speaker 3: quick before we move on to Thanksgiving, if that's okay.
- 14:30Speaker 3: Of course it is. I'm not presumptuous. I just figured,
- 14:34Speaker 3: you know.
- 14:34Speaker 2: Oh, hell. Well, time to go to Thanksgiving.
- 14:36Speaker 3: I'm not asking anybody. Doggone it. I'm taking this thing
- 14:38Speaker 3: to Thanksgiving.
- 14:39Speaker 2: Come on.
- 14:40Speaker 3: Get the turkey.
- 14:40Speaker 2: Let's go. We're done with Halloween. Screw you. Well, excuse me.
- 14:45Speaker 1: Sorry.
- 14:45Speaker 2: Go do your Halloween stories. Take your time.
- 14:48Speaker 3: The one is something that will probably... Heal up some
- 14:52Speaker 3: people for my highfalutin the way Halloween is at my
- 14:54Speaker 3: house now. I had something genuinely shocking happen in a
- 14:58Speaker 3: far more humble home 30 years ago. I'll share that
- 15:01Speaker 3: in a minute. But first, trick-or-treating, giving and receiving. When
- 15:04Speaker 3: you were out trick-or-treating, first of all, give me a
- 15:08Speaker 3: couple of costumes you remember going as.
- 15:11Speaker 2: Well, I did all the Batman. I remember being Batman
- 15:14Speaker 2: one year.
- 15:14Speaker 3: I was Fred Flintstone at one point, Superman.
- 15:16Speaker 2: Yeah, I did Superman. Were they from Sears?
- 15:19Speaker 3: I mean, did you just go get them off the
- 15:21Speaker 3: rack and put them on with those stupid rubber bands?
- 15:24Speaker 3: Or did mom or dad or anybody ever make you
- 15:27Speaker 3: a big fullfalutin? I mean, I've been so scoreboarded by people. Well,
- 15:30Speaker 3: my mom got out the sewing machine in July, and
- 15:34Speaker 3: it was like a Broadway show. It was like, golly, Moses,
- 15:37Speaker 3: I was abused as a child. I wore a $ 12
- 15:38Speaker 3: Fred Flintstone. I got creative a little bit older. I
- 15:42Speaker 3: remember when I was like 10, 11, 12, I used
- 15:44Speaker 3: to like, I'd be the werewolf or I'd be, I'd
- 15:46Speaker 3: get like a blood on my face. I'd be a
- 15:49Speaker 3: bloody zombie.
- 15:50Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 15:50Speaker 2: So I, I just ran that, ran the gamut. I mean,
- 15:53Speaker 2: now I will not mention publicly how, when I was
- 15:56Speaker 2: a little, little kid, I used to run around the
- 15:58Speaker 2: house with an umbrella pretending to be Mary Poppins. Now,
- 16:03Speaker 2: that I won't mention because that would embarrass me. That
- 16:05Speaker 2: would be embarrassing.
- 16:06Speaker 3: This is our son, Mike.
- 16:07Speaker 2: Just a spoonful of sugar.
- 16:08Speaker 3: Helps the medicine go down.
- 16:10Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 16:11Speaker 2: And I would put skits on for my mom and
- 16:13Speaker 2: dad and my aunts and uncles and stuff. Yeah, yeah.
- 16:16Speaker 3: It's a showmanship gift that you put to good use.
- 16:18Speaker 3: To this day, second thing about now, I'm probably nine
- 16:21Speaker 3: or ten doing trick or treating in a minute. We'll
- 16:24Speaker 3: get to the age at which trick or treating should stop.
- 16:27Speaker 3: That was a talk show topic. But when you're eight, nine,
- 16:30Speaker 3: I bet you did this because you go around to
- 16:32Speaker 3: the house, you know, your own neighborhood. You kind of
- 16:34Speaker 3: know your own neighborhood. But it was like an adventure
- 16:36Speaker 3: because it was dark. You could go wherever you wanted.
- 16:38Speaker 3: pretty tightly packed suburb in the Prince George's County, Maryland
- 16:41Speaker 3: for me. Where were you when you were 7, 8, 9, 10?
- 16:43Speaker 3: Where were we talking? Dayton, Ohio.
- 16:44Speaker 2: Dayton, Ohio.
- 16:45Speaker 3: So kind of suburban America, kind of just kind of
- 16:47Speaker 3: a normal thing. Yeah, yeah. Trick-or-treating was great. I'd get candy,
- 16:50Speaker 3: but I also kind of enjoyed checking out people's houses.
- 16:53Speaker 3: Speaking of checking out people's houses, I was like, oh,
- 16:55Speaker 3: what kind of stuff they got in there? You know,
- 16:57Speaker 3: what kind of, you know, what do they bring?
- 16:58Speaker 2: Oh, look into the living room?
- 16:59Speaker 3: Yeah, you just kind of see, and a lot of
- 17:01Speaker 3: times the people, and this will pivot us into when
- 17:04Speaker 3: you're at the receiving end of trick-or-treating, because we did
- 17:06Speaker 3: both once live in homes that received trick-or-treaters.
- 17:10Speaker 2: And I always.
- 17:10Speaker 3: Appreciated when like the mom or dad would open the
- 17:13Speaker 3: door and they'd have some little costume on and welcoming us.
- 17:15Speaker 3: So when it was time to be a grownup and
- 17:18Speaker 3: you were welcoming neighborhood trick-or-treaters to your home, I never
- 17:22Speaker 3: did a big full on haunt. There are people who
- 17:24Speaker 3: put like $ 50, 000 worth of smoke machines in the front
- 17:28Speaker 3: yard and life-size Frankenstein's. Did you ever try to make
- 17:31Speaker 3: things a little festive at your house for the visiting kiddos?
- 17:34Speaker 2: No, but in Florida, in the Tampa Bay area, there's
- 17:37Speaker 2: a neighborhood right by my home, and they go all out.
- 17:42Speaker 2: They've got the lighting and the characters. I love that.
- 17:45Speaker 2: I love that. It's a cool— and they do it at Christmastime, too,
- 17:49Speaker 2: with all the Christmas lights. We've got those as well.
- 17:52Speaker 3: I will rescue you from Halloween and get us to
- 17:54Speaker 3: the springboard to Thanksgiving. Well, no.
- 17:56Speaker 2: With the story.
- 17:57Speaker 3: With the story.
- 17:57Speaker 2: Here we go.
- 18:00Speaker 3: It is 1996 ish. Yeah. And and we are welcoming
- 18:07Speaker 3: kids to that. And I love it. I love it.
- 18:09Speaker 3: I love it. I love it. I phrased it in
- 18:13Speaker 3: the following way. I don't believe that kids coming to
- 18:16Speaker 3: your house for trick or treat should have either stubble
- 18:20Speaker 3: or breasts unless they're phony. In other words, let's not
- 18:23Speaker 3: have 17-year-old trick-or-treaters, okay? I mean, just please, come on.
- 18:26Speaker 3: I think when you're like 8 or 9 or 10.
- 18:29Speaker 3: What was the last.
- 18:30Speaker 2: Year you did it?
- 18:30Speaker 3: I think I was probably 12. What was the.
- 18:33Speaker 2: Last year you did it? 11, 12, probably.
- 18:35Speaker 3: Teenage trick-or-treaters, just how about no? If you're taking your
- 18:38Speaker 3: little brothers and sisters, that's great. Send them up. But
- 18:41Speaker 3: let's not have high school trick-or-treaters. So at this particular
- 18:45Speaker 3: fateful Halloween, not only did we have trick-or-treaters who are
- 18:49Speaker 3: as tall as I am, we had pretty good candy.
- 18:54Speaker 3: We had the Hershey's, the full-size things, the Reese's. Speaking
- 18:58Speaker 3: of which, Mr. Cinderella's Castle, Cinderella. Cinderella Castle. Why do
- 19:02Speaker 3: you and why does everybody say Reese's? It's Reese's, isn't it?
- 19:08Speaker 2: Of course. It's Reese's Cups. Reese's Cups.
- 19:11Speaker 3: I understand special dispensation. So we've got the Reese's, and
- 19:14Speaker 3: we've got all the good stuff. And we're noticing, and
- 19:18Speaker 3: it's a busy night. I mean, bam, bam, bam. Ding, dong, boom, boom. Ding, dong,
- 19:21Speaker 3: trick or treat. Ding, dong, trick or treat. And some
- 19:23Speaker 3: of the older trick or treaters, noticing the quality of
- 19:26Speaker 3: our candy, were starting to come around a second, third,
- 19:29Speaker 3: and fourth time. And it's like, oh, geez. And I finally–
- 19:34Speaker 3: at one point, I kind of had to– this proved
- 19:37Speaker 3: a bad move on my part. I said, guys, can
- 19:40Speaker 3: we maybe let some other guys come for the first
- 19:43Speaker 3: time before you guys come for your third and fourth?
- 19:45Speaker 3: And they slinked away, slunk away, whatever the past tense
- 19:48Speaker 3: of slink is. And I figured, okay, whatever, whatever. And
- 19:52Speaker 3: then Halloween kind of dies down. And the neighborhood grows quiet.
- 19:58Speaker 3: And the house grows quiet.
- 20:01Speaker 2: I know what's coming.
- 20:02Speaker 3: I've told the story before.
- 20:04Speaker 2: Do you remember it? No, I've never heard the story.
- 20:06Speaker 2: But I'm going to guess what happened. You got egg,
- 20:07Speaker 2: didn't you? Oh, please.
- 20:09Speaker 3: I dream of being egged. I wish to God we'd
- 20:13Speaker 3: have been egged. No, but you're headed down the right path. No,
- 20:17Speaker 3: we had a more ambitious style of hoodlum in our
- 20:20Speaker 3: neighborhood because we're sitting there. The evening is growing a
- 20:23Speaker 3: little bit quiet. We're looking back and thinking, hey, that
- 20:25Speaker 3: was a pretty good Halloween. And then the ear shattering
- 20:30Speaker 3: sound of a plate glass window. Oh, no. Being blasted
- 20:35Speaker 3: to smithereens with an incoming pumpkin.
- 20:39Speaker 2: They threw the pumpkin through the window.
- 20:40Speaker 3: We paid the price for thwarting the hoodlums. So there
- 20:45Speaker 3: was that. I'll bet those were Democrats.
- 20:47Speaker 2: I guarantee they were young Democrats. I guarantee they were 1996.
- 20:50Speaker 3: They were young.
- 20:51Speaker 2: Teenage Democrat. That's on the ballot. 18 days. Don't let
- 20:55Speaker 2: that happen. Well, of course, here I am, on the
- 20:58Speaker 2: one hand, kind of agreeing with you about the older trick-or-treaters.
- 21:01Speaker 2: But again, a week ago, I'm the dumbass 66-year-old standing
- 21:05Speaker 2: outside Cinderella Castle with my trick-or-treat bag.
- 21:08Speaker 3: But that's not trick-or-treat. You're not going to somebody's house
- 21:11Speaker 3: in your neighborhood and going trick-or-treat. No, it's fine. And P.S.,
- 21:16Speaker 3: I went back to some of the same stations more
- 21:17Speaker 3: than once. So I'm in no position. I'm in no
- 21:20Speaker 3: position to condemn. All right. Two minutes on Thanksgiving, two
- 21:24Speaker 3: minutes on Christmas. You got a deal.
- 21:26Speaker 2: First of all, especially this time around, I had a
- 21:32Speaker 2: joke with one of my kids. He said, Dad, you
- 21:35Speaker 2: know how many times you've cheated death? And the joke
- 21:37Speaker 2: is that I'm a hypochondriac and that every time I
- 21:40Speaker 2: get some kind of health thing, I think I'm dying.
- 21:42Speaker 2: And I never am. But when I got this news
- 21:44Speaker 2: about the blockage, which was largely true, based on your experience.
- 21:47Speaker 2: And I went and got a scan and figured out
- 21:49Speaker 2: I had some blockage. And I, I thought, you know, God,
- 21:53Speaker 2: please don't take me now with a heart attack. I'm sick.
- 21:55Speaker 2: I'm loving life. I'm loving my, my job. I, and
- 22:00Speaker 2: this podcast is a big part of that. And I'm not,
- 22:02Speaker 2: I'm not trying to blow smoke up here. You know what?
- 22:04Speaker 2: I mean it. I love this so much every day.
- 22:07Speaker 2: And I feel, and I got into a new home recently.
- 22:09Speaker 2: I moved and I love the new place and I'm getting, anyway,
- 22:14Speaker 2: I've got so much to be thankful for. Healthy kids,
- 22:18Speaker 2: a healthy granddaughter, friends who I love, people I adore,
- 22:23Speaker 2: a job that I get to do that is the
- 22:25Speaker 2: envy of what many people would want to do for
- 22:28Speaker 2: a living. And so for some reason this year, I
- 22:30Speaker 2: am in a profoundly grateful place and I'm excited to
- 22:35Speaker 2: celebrate Thanksgiving in New York. As many people would roll
- 22:38Speaker 2: their eyes, I'm going to watch that Macy's Day Thanksgiving
- 22:41Speaker 2: parade again. I'm going to go to a nice restaurant
- 22:43Speaker 2: with some dear people in my life. And I'm going
- 22:45Speaker 2: to really celebrate my thankfulness. And I'm not trying to
- 22:49Speaker 2: be schmaltzy, Mark, but isn't that really what that's supposed
- 22:52Speaker 2: to be all about?
- 22:52Speaker 3: It's precisely it. It's about the people in your life,
- 22:55Speaker 3: the things in your life. And I know that gather
- 22:57Speaker 3: 100 people this Thanksgiving and pick any of the 100.
- 23:01Speaker 3: And there will always be people doing better and people
- 23:03Speaker 3: doing worse. But there is always something you can look to,
- 23:07Speaker 3: something you can do. And if you don't have 43
- 23:09Speaker 3: people in your life who love you, Find a church.
- 23:12Speaker 3: Find a place. Find some volunteer stuff to do. Reach out.
- 23:15Speaker 3: Be around people. There will be no shortage of opportunities
- 23:18Speaker 3: to take the gifts that you have, the heart that
- 23:20Speaker 3: you have, the spirit that you have, and share it
- 23:22Speaker 3: with others 100%, 100%. Now, to the nuts and bolts
- 23:24Speaker 3: of Thanksgiving. Was it always turkey for you? Is it turkey?
- 23:31Speaker 2: Are you kidding?
- 23:31Speaker 3: Or can you branch out and do some ham or
- 23:34Speaker 3: something else?
- 23:35Speaker 2: That's heresy. That's sacrilege.
- 23:37Speaker 3: Ah, you're going to hit me.
- 23:38Speaker 2: That's sacrilege. What did you do? You didn't do turkey? No,
- 23:42Speaker 2: we did.
- 23:42Speaker 3: It was always turkey. Now, here's what's odd. Okay, do
- 23:45Speaker 3: me a favor. Siblings for you. Count them up. One.
- 23:49Speaker 2: Gotcha.
- 23:50Speaker 3: So when you're seven, your older sister, right?
- 23:54Speaker 2: Yep.
- 23:55Speaker 3: So at one point, when you're, let's say, six, seven
- 23:57Speaker 3: years old, however old she would be, there would be
- 23:59Speaker 3: four of you around the Thanksgiving table for a brief
- 24:02Speaker 3: segment of time, right?
- 24:03Speaker 2: Correct. Correct. Sure.
- 24:04Speaker 3: Now, I'm an only child. So is my mom and
- 24:06Speaker 3: dad and me.
- 24:07Speaker 2: And it was fine. And it's funny.
- 24:09Speaker 3: I've lived around so many other people. And you have
- 24:12Speaker 3: 14 brothers and 27 siblings and 15 cousins. And I
- 24:14Speaker 3: love that. And both my mom and my dad had
- 24:17Speaker 3: a lot of siblings. So I got cousins out the yin-yang.
- 24:20Speaker 3: So I've done a lot of family Christmas, family Thanksgivings
- 24:23Speaker 3: and stuff with a lot of people. But mom would
- 24:25Speaker 3: make turkey, and it would be kind of small, and
- 24:26Speaker 3: she'd make dressing and just did great. My mom was
- 24:28Speaker 3: a consummate cook. It was great. We thoroughly, thoroughly, thoroughly
- 24:31Speaker 3: loved it, and it was always, always turkey. Now, these days,
- 24:36Speaker 3: in the 24 years that I've been married to Lisa, we,
- 24:41Speaker 3: a few years ago, said, why don't we introduce some
- 24:45Speaker 3: ham to the proceedings? We had a bunch of people over.
- 24:47Speaker 2: Ha, ha, ha! What? Ham?
- 24:51Speaker 3: You are not going to want to hear what we've
- 24:52Speaker 3: done the last couple of three. So turkey and ham.
- 24:55Speaker 2: If you say tofurkey, if you say tofu, I'm out.
- 24:57Speaker 2: Hell no.
- 24:58Speaker 1: Hell no.
- 24:58Speaker 2: Okay.
- 24:59Speaker 3: However, we've had some somewhat more– the kiddos are either
- 25:06Speaker 3: here or sometimes they're splayed out across the country and
- 25:08Speaker 3: have other things and other families and other this and
- 25:11Speaker 3: other that. We have on maybe two of the last
- 25:15Speaker 3: four Thanksgivings– Italian Thanksgiving lasagna, cannolis. Who are you?
- 25:25Speaker 2: And we have loved it.
- 25:27Speaker 3: We have absolutely loved it.
- 25:29Speaker 2: I don't know you anymore. I don't know you. I
- 25:32Speaker 2: don't know you.
- 25:33Speaker 3: I knew this would go over.
- 25:34Speaker 2: This is repulsive. Italian on Thanksgiving. Why? What made you
- 25:39Speaker 2: think of Italian for Thanksgiving?
- 25:41Speaker 3: That was Lisa's idea, and I loved it.
- 25:43Speaker 2: Just London.
- 25:44Speaker 3: Now, it's funny you say, because this year, this year,
- 25:47Speaker 3: I think after having been far afield for a couple
- 25:49Speaker 3: of years, we won 100%. And Christmas never changes. That
- 25:53Speaker 3: is always turkey. Might be some ham there as well,
- 25:56Speaker 3: if that's okay. But that's always very traditional.
- 25:58Speaker 2: See, I think you can do other things at Christmas,
- 26:00Speaker 2: but you can't mess up. Interesting. You can't screw up Thanksgiving.
- 26:04Speaker 3: Okay.
- 26:05Speaker 2: I could do Italian at Christmas. I could do ham.
- 26:08Speaker 2: I could do everything. Not Thanksgiving. You got to do turkey.
- 26:12Speaker 2: You have to. Oh, my gosh. I am mortified. I
- 26:17Speaker 2: don't know you. I don't recognize you anymore. And I
- 26:19Speaker 2: love Lisa. What's wrong with her? Please don't quote me.
- 26:24Speaker 2: Please don't go home and tell her that I said
- 26:25Speaker 2: that because I don't want to have the wrath. I
- 26:29Speaker 2: love her so much, but my goodness. Well, what a
- 26:32Speaker 2: strange thing to do. Now I almost want to know,
- 26:34Speaker 2: am I alone or is there anybody else out there
- 26:35Speaker 2: who has enabled themselves to.
- 26:37Speaker 3: Take a little bit of a, of an adventure into
- 26:49Speaker 3: other cuisines on Thanksgiving. Speaking of Thanksgiving traditions, so I
- 26:54Speaker 3: get here back to my native Texas in 1994. Right.
- 26:56Speaker 3: And I never thought about this because growing up, what
- 27:01Speaker 3: in the world is Thanksgiving about?
- 27:03Speaker 2: Football.
- 27:03Speaker 3: And two teams, two teams always play on Thanksgiving.
- 27:06Speaker 2: Dallas Cowboys, Detroit Lions.
- 27:08Speaker 3: And the Detroit Lions. Somebody's in Detroit, somebody's in Dallas.
- 27:11Speaker 3: So for the very first time in my life, I'm
- 27:14Speaker 3: sitting here doing a talk show and I'm thinking- what
- 27:17Speaker 3: are you people doing? This is the most disruptive thing
- 27:20Speaker 3: in the world. How, how there's something, there was something
- 27:23Speaker 3: just weird that struck me because I guess 60 or
- 27:26Speaker 3: whatever Texas stadium used to hold 60, 70,000. Uh, what, what,
- 27:31Speaker 3: what did you, how do you eat? How do you
- 27:33Speaker 3: do this? How do you have anybody over? I love
- 27:34Speaker 3: football as much as the next person, but isn't this
- 27:37Speaker 3: the most incredible, disruptive, disconnective thing you could possibly do
- 27:42Speaker 3: to Thanksgiving to shoehorn actually going to a football game.
- 27:45Speaker 3: I would, I, I, They could have vilified me. They
- 27:48Speaker 3: could have absolutely filleted me.
- 27:51Speaker 2: Crucified you, yeah.
- 27:52Speaker 3: They said, Mark, here's what we do. We've had season
- 27:55Speaker 3: tickets for X number of years. We do Thanksgiving breakfast.
- 27:59Speaker 3: You know, God only knows what you're going to think
- 28:00Speaker 3: about that. And then we go to the game. Because
- 28:04Speaker 3: it's always the late game, so I guess you can't
- 28:06Speaker 3: really eat afterward unless it's like 9 o'clock after you
- 28:08Speaker 3: get out of the stadium. But they found a way
- 28:10Speaker 3: to do it, and I came to understand why. how
- 28:13Speaker 3: it was possible to have those things coexist.
- 28:15Speaker 2: Well, we were season ticket holders in the brand new
- 28:19Speaker 2: Cowboy Stadium. Denise and I splurged, and we got four seats.
- 28:23Speaker 2: When Jerry World opened? When Jerry World opened, we were
- 28:27Speaker 2: some of the first season ticket holders, and we would
- 28:30Speaker 2: go on Thanksgiving Day. We had seat mates, people who
- 28:34Speaker 2: sat right behind us, Pam and Ginny. This lovely, these
- 28:38Speaker 2: two ladies that were so adorable. And they were from,
- 28:41Speaker 2: I think they're from Terrell, Texas. But they too were
- 28:45Speaker 2: Cowboys fanatics. They adored Matthew. Matthew adored them. We all
- 28:48Speaker 2: loved them. And we would actually do Thanksgiving dinner in
- 28:52Speaker 2: the parking lot. We would tailgate. And I remember some chilly,
- 28:56Speaker 2: chilly Thursday afternoons.
- 28:57Speaker 3: That's tremendous.
- 28:58Speaker 2: And we had so much fun. And it was, I
- 29:00Speaker 2: remember the cardboard, you know, the card tables we had up.
- 29:04Speaker 2: But we would do it. We would bring the turkey
- 29:06Speaker 2: and all the fixings and the trimmings at Cowboys and
- 29:10Speaker 2: Jerry World. By the way, quick note about Jerry Jones.
- 29:13Speaker 2: Did you see the tour he gave Steve Doocy this
- 29:16Speaker 2: week on Fox News of his house? Sure did. Oh,
- 29:19Speaker 2: my Lord. That's some wealth right there. And that's in where?
- 29:23Speaker 3: Have you seen the Bravo Eugenia? Have you seen the yacht? Oh,
- 29:26Speaker 3: my gosh.
- 29:28Speaker 2: Is that his yacht? Yes. Oh, no.
- 29:31Speaker 3: Oh, yes.
- 29:32Speaker 2: Wow. I mean, that house. I mean, what is that?
- 29:35Speaker 2: Is that not Oak Lawn or Turtle Creek?
- 29:38Speaker 3: I actually do not know the name. where Jerry lives.
- 29:40Speaker 3: I don't know. Well, it's a big, famous, big, expensive
- 29:43Speaker 3: mansions and everything. But what a time. Anyway, great memories.
- 29:46Speaker 3: You know what we just did here? Because I'm looking.
- 29:48Speaker 2: You know me. I look up at the clock. This
- 29:50Speaker 2: gives us an opportunity to do a whole theme Friday
- 29:56Speaker 2: on Christmas. We're just going to do Christmas. We ran
- 29:58Speaker 2: out of time. And I want to remind you.
- 30:00Speaker 3: We don't want to give Christmas. Listen, after what we've
- 30:03Speaker 3: already done. I'm not going to say it. If people
- 30:07Speaker 3: think we were short shrifting Jesus earlier, we do not
- 30:11Speaker 3: want to telescope down our treatment of Christmas. That would
- 30:14Speaker 3: be a bad look for us.
- 30:16Speaker 2: Let's please not do a Reader's Digest version of Christ's birth.
- 30:20Speaker 2: And then there was Christmas. We're out of here. Thanks.
- 30:22Speaker 2: Merry Christmas. Have a happy. Don't forget to like and

- 30:40Speaker 2: We're so grateful that Preborn is here for us, and
- 30:44Speaker 2: we want to be there for them. Preborn, it's simple.
- 30:46Speaker 2: They give free ultrasounds to young women. When a woman
- 30:50Speaker 2: sees her baby and hears the baby's heartbeat, it doubles
- 30:53Speaker 2: the chance that she's going to pick life. $ 28 a
- 30:55Speaker 2: month will help save a baby a month. For less
- 30:59Speaker 2: than a dollar a day, it's worth every penny. We're
- 31:02Speaker 2: proud that this audience banded together and donated $ 15, 000 to
- 31:06Speaker 2: provide an ultrasound, an entire machine to save babies for
- 31:10Speaker 2: years to come. So, Mark, whether our audience wants to
- 31:13Speaker 2: save a baby or hundreds, you're just a call or
- 31:15Speaker 2: a click away.
- 31:16Speaker 3: It's the easiest thing in the world. And that phone
- 31:18Speaker 3: number is 833-850-BABY, 833-850-BABY. Or go to preborn.com slash MMXtra.
- 31:26Speaker 3: That is preborn.com slash MMXtra. We thank them. for partnering
- 31:29Speaker 3: with us. We thank everybody listening and watching who will
- 31:32Speaker 3: contribute to them. And Mike, I thank you for the
- 31:34Speaker 3: great idea of the holiday preview. I somehow knew when
- 31:37Speaker 3: we began that we were not going to be able
- 31:40Speaker 3: to get all three holidays in.
- 31:41Speaker 2: We can't. There's too much. We can't get eight pounds
- 31:44Speaker 2: of sugar in a 10-pound bag. No, you cannot. Or
- 31:48Speaker 2: vice versa. By the way, and while we're thanking everybody,
- 31:52Speaker 2: can I just give a big shout-out to Eric Hansen
- 31:54Speaker 2: and Yasmin Holloway, these two folks. The best. They are
- 31:58Speaker 2: always there for us, never in a bad mood. They
- 32:01Speaker 2: always are there playing the clips, doing the video, doing
- 32:04Speaker 2: the audio. Yasmin and Eric, and you talk about the
- 32:07Speaker 2: time you hang out. And I'm grateful to you because
- 32:09Speaker 2: I know the way the timing works. You spend an
- 32:11Speaker 2: hour after your show waiting to do the podcast. You
- 32:13Speaker 2: don't seem to mind. And I'm grateful for that. It's
- 32:16Speaker 2: a little bit different with my schedule. But to Yasmin
- 32:19Speaker 2: and Eric, you guys are so, so important to us.
- 32:21Speaker 2: And we thank you because we couldn't do this podcast
- 32:24Speaker 2: without them. It's it.
- 32:26Speaker 3: It's a team, and we love it, and we just
- 32:27Speaker 3: love the exercise. We appreciate it. And everybody watching and listening,
- 32:30Speaker 3: have a fantastic weekend. More excitement. Man, the days tick down.
- 32:34Speaker 3: Speaking of the days ticking down, we're getting down to,
- 32:35Speaker 3: what will it be, 16, 15, 14 days before the midterm.
- 32:38Speaker 3: So plenty to cover next week. Everybody have a very,
- 32:40Speaker 3: very blessed and wonderful weekend from both of us, the M's,
- 32:44Speaker 3: Mike and Mark here on M & M Extra. We
- 32:46Speaker 3: so much love you, and I hope we have a
- 32:47Speaker 3: fantastic weekend. We'll see you on Monday.
- 32:49Speaker 2: See you, everybody.
