- 0:01Speaker 1: Hey, Discos, need a little more Disgraceland in your life,
- 0:05Speaker 1: just to touch to get you through. Yeah, me too.
- 0:08Speaker 1: This is the podcast that comes after the podcast. Welcome
- 0:11Speaker 1: to Disgraceland, the after Party. Welcome to the Disgraceland bonus episode,
- 0:30Speaker 1: a little thing we like to call the after party.
- 0:33Speaker 1: This is the show after the show, the party after
- 0:35Speaker 1: the party, the bridge to get you from one full
- 0:37Speaker 1: episode of Disgraceland to the other, the backyard to dig
- 0:39Speaker 1: into the dirt. On this episode we are talking about
- 0:44Speaker 1: Peter Tosh led Zeppelin, The Last Temptation of Christ, and
- 0:48Speaker 1: of course your voicemails, text, dms and more and as always,
- 0:52Speaker 1: a whole lot of rosy. All right, Discos, let's get
- 0:56Speaker 1: into it. Buenas DS Buenos Noche is depending on when
- 1:10Speaker 1: and where you're listening to this happy last week of March.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Spring is here officially, if not actually weatherwise, at least
- 1:17Speaker 1: that's the way it is here in the Northeast. I
- 1:19Speaker 1: love the spring. I listen to music differently in the spring,
- 1:23Speaker 1: as soon as that cold breaks and the sun starts
- 1:25Speaker 1: to burn a little brighter. I have certain records that
- 1:28Speaker 1: I go back to every year around this time. Black Crows.
- 1:31Speaker 1: The Southern Harmony and musical Companion is one that I
- 1:34Speaker 1: go back to every Spring, in particular because that record
- 1:37Speaker 1: came out during the spring while I was in high
- 1:39Speaker 1: school in Man. Remedy that single, it was everywhere blasting
- 1:43Speaker 1: out of car windows, and guys, we had some pretty
- 1:46Speaker 1: cool cars in high school. My buddy Dutch, he had
- 1:49Speaker 1: a sixty four dotch Dart from Billy had a sixty
- 1:52Speaker 1: seven Camaro. I myself had a sixty seven Plymouth Barracuda.
- 1:57Speaker 1: So yeah, blasted getting off the point here, but we
- 2:00Speaker 1: were blasting this song. Everyone was blasting this song. It
- 2:03Speaker 1: seem not just us, the jocks, the stoners, the cheerleaders though,
- 2:07Speaker 1: whoever's this song was indescapable when it came out Remedy
- 2:10Speaker 1: by the Black Crows, and at least it was in
- 2:14Speaker 1: my little small town in Massachusetts in the springtime. And
- 2:17Speaker 1: something about that song, man, the way it hits, it's
- 2:19Speaker 1: just so big and I don't know, exciting. It's like
- 2:24Speaker 1: what springtime should be big and exciting. Another springtime record.
- 2:29Speaker 1: Another record that I always associate with the Spring is
- 2:32Speaker 1: Check Your Head by Beastie Boys. For similar reasons. It
- 2:36Speaker 1: was a spring album when I was in high school.
- 2:38Speaker 1: Released in the spring of nineteen ninety two, and it
- 2:40Speaker 1: was everywhere. I used to think that I went to
- 2:44Speaker 1: see the Beastie Boys the weekend before the record came out.
- 2:48Speaker 1: But I looked this up today and I've been telling
- 2:50Speaker 1: this story forever. Yeah, so the Beasty Boy was the
- 2:53Speaker 1: weekend before Check Your Head came out. Turns out the
- 2:57Speaker 1: record was out for about three weeks before I actually
- 2:59Speaker 1: saw that. In Amherst, Massachusetts. For those of you who
- 3:03Speaker 1: don't know, the university and one of the one of
- 3:05Speaker 1: the University of Massachusetts campuses is up in Amherst, mass
- 3:09Speaker 1: which is Western mass beautiful part of the state. Total
- 3:15Speaker 1: party school, total party part of the state. Actually there's
- 3:18Speaker 1: a bunch of schools up there. It's an animal House
- 3:21Speaker 1: is based on a school from western Massachusetts as well,
- 3:25Speaker 1: not Amherst, but that I should give you an idea. Anyways,
- 3:28Speaker 1: Amherst used to do maybe they still do. I don't know,
- 3:31Speaker 1: write me, text me, call me if you're from you
- 3:33Speaker 1: massed Amherst and you know they answer this question. But
- 3:35Speaker 1: they used to do these things called spring Flings, where
- 3:38Speaker 1: they would they would throw these massive concerts every spring
- 3:42Speaker 1: outdoor concerts, and I believe they were free if you
- 3:47Speaker 1: went to school there. We used to sneak in to
- 3:50Speaker 1: these shows, so I don't remember ticket prices or anything
- 3:52Speaker 1: like that. But on this one bill that the Beastie
- 3:55Speaker 1: Boys I believe headlined, the bill was this, and I
- 3:59Speaker 1: looked this up. The Mighty Muddy Bostones, Fire Hose Fishbone Fish,
- 4:03Speaker 1: the Beastie Boys, Buffalo Tom, and I think Dinosaur Junior
- 4:07Speaker 1: as well. I'm not sure about Dinosaur Junior. I couldn't
- 4:11Speaker 1: confirm that in the four seconds of research I did
- 4:15Speaker 1: before hopping in the booth here. But at that show,
- 4:18Speaker 1: the Beastie Boys came out and it was like, whether
- 4:19Speaker 1: it was the weekend before Check Your Head was released
- 4:21Speaker 1: that spring or whether it was three weeks after, it
- 4:24Speaker 1: didn't matter. They unleashed unholy awesomeness onto the campus of
- 4:30Speaker 1: UMass Amherst in their new incarnation of the Beastie Boys
- 4:34Speaker 1: where they're playing their own instruments, and they had DJ
- 4:37Speaker 1: Hurricane as well, and they just crushed. They just crushed,
- 4:42Speaker 1: and again springtime, so Check your Head will always be
- 4:46Speaker 1: one of those Spring records for me. Also led Zeppelin
- 4:48Speaker 1: one another great Spring album and not because I was
- 4:52Speaker 1: in high school when it was released. I wasn't how
- 4:54Speaker 1: frican old do you think I am? But but I did.
- 4:57Speaker 1: I did find this record cassette actually in its case
- 5:03Speaker 1: in my backyard in the fourth grade. It was just
- 5:07Speaker 1: sitting there in the grass, perfectly playable. How the hell
- 5:11Speaker 1: does that happen? If any kid in America nineteen eighty
- 5:14Speaker 1: four needed to find led Zepplin one in their backyard,
- 5:16Speaker 1: it was me. I still vividly remember racing it up
- 5:20Speaker 1: to my stereo in my bedroom and here in the
- 5:21Speaker 1: first few seconds of that album, the hits and the
- 5:23Speaker 1: intro to Good Times, Bad Times, Mother of God, so heavy,
- 5:27Speaker 1: so unlike anything I'd been exposed to at that point.
- 5:30Speaker 1: Cut me some slack. I was nine years old. I
- 5:32Speaker 1: was in a def leopard, but you know they weren't
- 5:34Speaker 1: doing it for me like led Zeppelin eventually did it
- 5:38Speaker 1: for me. So led Zeppelin One another one of my
- 5:40Speaker 1: spring records, along with Black Crows, the Southern Harmony and
- 5:44Speaker 1: musical companion in the Beastie Boys. Check your head, get
- 5:48Speaker 1: at me with your favorite springtime records. What are you
- 5:53Speaker 1: listening to when the weather turns warm? What's getting you going?
- 5:57Speaker 1: What's getting those cold beers cracked out on the back
- 6:00Speaker 1: patio as the sun starts to shine and the days
- 6:03Speaker 1: get longer. Let me know. Hit me up at Disgracelam
- 6:07Speaker 1: pod on Twitter, on Facebook, on Instagram, and TikTok, or
- 6:11Speaker 1: you can text me and leave me a voicemail six
- 6:13Speaker 1: one seven nine zero six six six three eight What
- 6:16Speaker 1: are your favorite spring records? Let me know? All right,
- 6:18Speaker 1: reggae is less spring for me and more of a
- 6:21Speaker 1: summer thing for all of us, I think, But that
- 6:24Speaker 1: did not stop us here at Double Elvis from diving
- 6:26Speaker 1: into the Peter Tosh story over on our YouTube channel.
- 6:30Speaker 1: We get into the story of Tash's home invasion and murder,
- 6:33Speaker 1: ultimately the killing of Peter Tosh, and we dip our
- 6:36Speaker 1: feet into a bit of the Keith Richards lore surrounding
- 6:40Speaker 1: this story as well, and the dust up with Peter
- 6:42Speaker 1: Tosh at Keith's home in Jamaica. This story is only
- 6:47Speaker 1: available on our YouTube channel that's at YouTube dot com.
- 6:50Speaker 1: Slash at Disgracelam Pod head over there to watching to subscribe,
- 6:53Speaker 1: So you're getting all the music storytelling you can possibly
- 6:56Speaker 1: get from Disgrace Ligned. Like I said, these stories are
- 6:59Speaker 1: not currently released in the RSS feed. They have video components, visuals, etc.
- 7:04Speaker 1: And they're only available on YouTube, So that's where you
- 7:06Speaker 1: gotta go to get it all right, head over there,
- 7:08Speaker 1: YouTube dot com, slash at Disgraceland Pod. Speaking of which,
- 7:12Speaker 1: I am thinking as always of different ways to bring
- 7:16Speaker 1: you more stories beyond the RSS feed, beyond YouTube even
- 7:20Speaker 1: We have a lot of content the Double Levis team
- 7:22Speaker 1: is producing to producing constantly. We've got a bunch of
- 7:25Speaker 1: content in the can that we've yet to even release,
- 7:27Speaker 1: and we should have some announcements on all of this
- 7:29Speaker 1: new stuff coming very very shortly. I'm excited. I want
- 7:33Speaker 1: to tell you about it right now, but I cannot,
- 7:35Speaker 1: But I will be telling it to you very soon,
- 7:38Speaker 1: I predict, possibly on the next after party, who knows.
- 7:41Speaker 1: This week though, right now in the present in Disgraceland,
- 7:44Speaker 1: we are unloading a slew, a bunch, a barrage, a deluge,
- 7:50Speaker 1: a torrent of previously exclusive episodes before returning next week
- 7:56Speaker 1: with two new full episodes, our two parter on lou
- 8:00Speaker 1: Reid that I am extremely excited for you to hear.
- 8:04Speaker 1: Those two episodes are going to drop on Tuesday, March
- 8:07Speaker 1: twenty eighth, but to dot all the i's and to
- 8:09Speaker 1: cross all the t's. It is worth mentioning that this
- 8:11Speaker 1: past week we released into your feed previously exclusive episodes
- 8:15Speaker 1: on NWA. A two part are on NWA led Zeppelin,
- 8:19Speaker 1: The Motown Record Story, Iggy Pot and Madonna, and hitting
- 8:22Speaker 1: your feeds between now and lou Reid Parts one and two,
- 8:25Speaker 1: you're getting more episodes eminem Whitney Houston, and Asap Rocky.
- 8:29Speaker 1: That is a ton of content. If you've heard these
- 8:33Speaker 1: previously exclusive episodes before, I encourage you to listen to
- 8:36Speaker 1: them again. Repeat listening. It always helps. It unlocks different insights.
- 8:40Speaker 1: It's the same as watching a movie multiple times. You
- 8:42Speaker 1: can catch things on second, third, and tenth time around
- 8:45Speaker 1: that you didn't before. Which brings me back to the
- 8:48Speaker 1: nineteen ninety five Michael Man masterpiece Heat, which I talked
- 8:51Speaker 1: about last week. I'm rewatching Heat repeatedly, not like I
- 8:56Speaker 1: sit down and watch all two hours and twenty minutes
- 8:59Speaker 1: of it or however however long it is every time,
- 9:01Speaker 1: but I watch bits and pieces of it. I'll get
- 9:03Speaker 1: into it in the next block. More on Heat coming up.
- 9:05Speaker 1: But I want to know disc goes. What are the
- 9:06Speaker 1: movies that you have on repeat. What are the movies
- 9:09Speaker 1: that you rewatch that you keep going back to that
- 9:12Speaker 1: are comfortable for you, that are that are good hangs
- 9:15Speaker 1: six one seven nine zero six six six three eight
- 9:17Speaker 1: to let me know, or hit me on Instagram, Twitter,
- 9:19Speaker 1: Facebook and TikTok at disgrace, slam pod back after this
- 9:22Speaker 1: with your voicemails, your calls, and your dms. Guys, call me,
- 9:46Speaker 1: text me. I cannot stress this enough. We need to
- 9:49Speaker 1: keep the conversation going beyond the constraints of the algorithms,
- 9:52Speaker 1: and there is an easy way to do that. You
- 9:54Speaker 1: can just hit me at six one seven nine zero
- 9:56Speaker 1: six six six three eight, like Lee from the eight
- 9:59Speaker 1: two eight. Here go ahead, Lee, tell me what you
- 10:01Speaker 1: gotta tell me.
- 10:03Speaker 2: Hey, Jake, it's Lee in the four one two. Just
- 10:07Speaker 2: call him because A I want to thank you for
- 10:09Speaker 2: getting back to be regarding my last message you texted me,
- 10:14Speaker 2: and I happened to be coming out of the hospital
- 10:17Speaker 2: in a wheelchair after having a procedure and I was
- 10:22Speaker 2: extremely stone and saw this message from you, and I
- 10:27Speaker 2: was like, well, the fuck is this? But anyway, I
- 10:31Speaker 2: appreciate that, but I also wanted to call and give
- 10:34Speaker 2: a couple of suggestions. A. I would love to hear
- 10:37Speaker 2: a story about Josh Hamme and Queens of the Stone Age,
- 10:44Speaker 2: specifically all the bullshit that went down with Nick Olivery.
- 10:48Speaker 2: Another suggestion would be Neil Young with Crosby Stills, Nash
- 10:52Speaker 2: and himself and all of the craft that went down
- 10:58Speaker 2: between those guys, with all the drugs, all of the
- 11:02Speaker 2: bailing out that Neil Young did on his other bandmates,
- 11:06Speaker 2: and some of the crazy shit that those guys got into. Anyway,
- 11:11Speaker 2: I love you, love the show, Rock Coroller, take.
- 11:14Speaker 1: Care, Lee my man. Sorry to hear about the wheelchair.
- 11:19Speaker 1: Sounds like you are on the Men though, so that's
- 11:21Speaker 1: good You're out of the hospital at least. I've thought
- 11:24Speaker 1: about the Queen's episode, but it still seems too fresh
- 11:28Speaker 1: or something. I don't know. You're not the first to
- 11:30Speaker 1: suggest Queens of the Stone Age, so maybe I need
- 11:33Speaker 1: to find a clean angle here. I know Nick was nuts,
- 11:36Speaker 1: but I don't know the specifics, and perhaps I needed
- 11:39Speaker 1: to do a little digging. As for Neil Young and
- 11:42Speaker 1: Crosby Stills A. Nash, this one is a no brainer,
- 11:45Speaker 1: but I gotta admit I'm a little freaked out by
- 11:47Speaker 1: the size of it Is it a two parter, is
- 11:49Speaker 1: it a very hard to do one part episode or
- 11:51Speaker 1: is it a ten part episode. I don't know. I'm
- 11:54Speaker 1: gonna lean in one way or another and try to
- 11:55Speaker 1: solve for you, brother. So more on both of these
- 11:58Speaker 1: in the future sometime right. Thank you for listening, Thank
- 12:01Speaker 1: you for calling. Let's hear from Aliyah in the six seventy.
- 12:06Speaker 2: What up today? This is Alia from Georgia.
- 12:10Speaker 3: Two quick questions or first, actually me to tell you
- 12:13Speaker 3: I love your podcast. I came across from probably a
- 12:16Speaker 3: year ago between bad Lands and both of them, I
- 12:19Speaker 3: thank the Britney Spears and then I watched their elictative
- 12:22Speaker 3: Bratty Murphy was the next one, and I.
- 12:24Speaker 2: Was OpEd after that.
- 12:26Speaker 4: I love the way you tell stories. I love the
- 12:28Speaker 4: way you don't have a bias on anything and you
- 12:31Speaker 4: just make the truth not mentioned.
- 12:33Speaker 1: You're just a really talking, good storyteller.
- 12:37Speaker 5: Andrew Priddy's out man, Aliyah, thank you for the call,
- 12:42Speaker 5: thank you for the support and Aliah.
- 12:47Speaker 1: Alia Now now I'm confused on the pronunciation. Episode is
- 12:51Speaker 1: definitely on the horizon. She's been on the list for
- 12:53Speaker 1: a bit, uh and I need to dig in. Need
- 12:55Speaker 1: more female artists in Disgraceland. Thank you for resurfacing this one.
- 13:00Speaker 1: This is something that's been brought to my attention before.
- 13:03Speaker 1: As you may guess, we have a massive list with
- 13:05Speaker 1: the artists on it. She is definitely on it. So
- 13:09Speaker 1: we will be getting to this at some point. I
- 13:11Speaker 1: can't tell you when it's not slated right now, but shortly,
- 13:14Speaker 1: I'm sure. As for bad Lands, we should have some
- 13:17Speaker 1: bad Lands news for you and the other bad Lands
- 13:19Speaker 1: listeners coming up soon, so stay tuned and thank you
- 13:22Speaker 1: for the voicemail, and as always, I appreciate your support.
- 13:27Speaker 1: All right, let's check in with the two o seven
- 13:28Speaker 1: from behind what appears to be a snowplow.
- 13:33Speaker 2: Hey, what's going on?
- 13:34Speaker 4: Yea? And to boy, I'm really looking forward to this
- 13:37Speaker 4: and I love.
- 13:38Speaker 3: The fine of communication.
- 13:39Speaker 2: This is so cool and it's so ballsy.
- 13:42Speaker 3: I wish everybody that did something like this.
- 13:47Speaker 2: Was also as ballsy as this, to let people just
- 13:51Speaker 2: straight up talk to you and you actually listen. So
- 13:54Speaker 2: I appreciate it.
- 13:55Speaker 4: Good work, Have a nice one, buddy, you got.
- 13:57Speaker 1: A two oh seven. Appreciate your calling and on digging
- 14:01Speaker 1: the line of communication myself, guys, If I'm being honest,
- 14:04Speaker 1: most days I dread opening up Instagram or Twitter or
- 14:08Speaker 1: TikTok or whatever the fuck. These social media platforms are
- 14:13Speaker 1: engineered to be massive time sucks, and for what I
- 14:16Speaker 1: do running a business, having to write and research as
- 14:20Speaker 1: much as I do, these things can be and mostly
- 14:24Speaker 1: are just massive distractions. I get to talk to a
- 14:27Speaker 1: bunch of you, which is awesome. That is by far
- 14:30Speaker 1: the most valuable part, the best part. But it's difficult.
- 14:35Speaker 1: It's difficult. As you know, who's you. Guys are probably
- 14:38Speaker 1: just addicted to these things as I am. You get
- 14:41Speaker 1: into them and they're to get hard to get out
- 14:42Speaker 1: of on it any given day. So I'm into this
- 14:47Speaker 1: calling and texting, this old fashioned phone number way of communicating.
- 14:53Speaker 1: Keep it up six one seven nine er was six
- 14:55Speaker 1: six six three eight. Not that we don't get confounding
- 14:58Speaker 1: voicemails and text we do like this one that is
- 15:01Speaker 1: perhaps a little too under the influence.
- 15:05Speaker 3: All right, kind of appreciated. I'm just curious you were.
- 15:09Speaker 3: I was just listening to your podcasts on Mama cap
- 15:16Speaker 3: and how you don't like the mamas in the papas.
- 15:19Speaker 3: However you're asking or saying, how you.
- 15:25Speaker 1: Really enjoy see that that that just seems to go nowhere.
- 15:32Speaker 1: And I swear that ending wasn't edited by us, And
- 15:35Speaker 1: we do get quite a few. I don't know for
- 15:38Speaker 1: certain that that person was drunk or stoned or both,
- 15:43Speaker 1: maybe just confused. I don't know. We get our fair
- 15:46Speaker 1: share of that, and that's cool. We all have our moments.
- 15:49Speaker 1: I encourage the drunk dialing, the stone dialing, whatever you
- 15:53Speaker 1: got to do, whenever you got to do it, as
- 15:55Speaker 1: long as you're being safe, go for I don't care
- 15:57Speaker 1: hit me up one way or another. Six one seven
- 15:59Speaker 1: nine six six six three eight. Well, let's end strong
- 16:03Speaker 1: with one more voicemail. Let's hear from the seven three seven.
- 16:07Speaker 4: Hey Jake, just watching ma Allen on Soft White Underbelly,
- 16:14Speaker 4: gg Allen's brother. I heard the gg Allen story on
- 16:22Speaker 4: Disgraceland and I was so disgusted that I had to
- 16:27Speaker 4: hear it like three times. Yes, I want you to
- 16:31Speaker 4: say garage, garage, garage, over and over. I have been
- 16:38Speaker 4: listening to you ever since the pandemic. And let's see
- 16:47Speaker 4: Disgraceland also the twenty seven Club. God damn it, that
- 16:56Speaker 4: is good shit. Originally from Minnesota. It's on my parents
- 17:04Speaker 4: living outside of Austin, Texas. Keep bringing it, brother, That
- 17:13Speaker 4: is good shit.
- 17:16Speaker 1: All right, short voicemail, but so much to get into here.
- 17:20Speaker 1: Gg Allen. Yes, the gg Allen episode is disgusting. Yep,
- 17:24Speaker 1: you're absolutely right, and it is available for you and
- 17:27Speaker 1: everyone else to check out if they haven't already, or
- 17:30Speaker 1: perhaps again, if you need a little more of that
- 17:33Speaker 1: gg filth in your life, you can go get it
- 17:36Speaker 1: in the Disgraceland feed it. It's right there. And if
- 17:39Speaker 1: if you're craving more gg Allen, like it sounds like
- 17:42Speaker 1: you're watching some Merle Allen stuff somewhere and you're unaware
- 17:47Speaker 1: of this, there's a gg Allen documentary which is a
- 17:50Speaker 1: primary source of research for me in the stock in
- 17:56Speaker 1: this episode I did. The documentary is called Hated. Go
- 17:59Speaker 1: check that out. It's incredible. It's one of Todd Phillips's
- 18:02Speaker 1: first films, if not his first film. Todd, of course,
- 18:06Speaker 1: is the genius behind the Hangover franchise Hangover Movies of
- 18:10Speaker 1: the Joker movie as well, but Gigi Allen was an
- 18:13Speaker 1: early fascination of his, and the Hated documentary that he
- 18:15Speaker 1: did is phenomenal, So check that out. What else did
- 18:20Speaker 1: you mention twenty seven Club. Thanks for your kind words
- 18:22Speaker 1: about the series. I'll have news on the twenty seven
- 18:25Speaker 1: Club very shortly. And you mentioned you're from Austin, so
- 18:29Speaker 1: I might as well mention myself that I'll be doing
- 18:31Speaker 1: an event in Austin coming up soon in May. I
- 18:35Speaker 1: will have details shortly for you guys. I hope to
- 18:38Speaker 1: see you there and everyone else from Austin who listens
- 18:40Speaker 1: to DISGRACELAMD So more on that soon. All right, let's
- 18:44Speaker 1: do some texts, all right from the six to six
- 18:47Speaker 1: to two. Hey, this is MK from Tupelo, Mississippi. I
- 18:50Speaker 1: just had two quick Netflix recommendations After Life. It's written
- 18:54Speaker 1: and directed by Ricky Gervais. I've watched it so many
- 18:57Speaker 1: times and it's just a great show and I don't
- 18:58Speaker 1: think I could ever get tired of watch. And this
- 19:00Speaker 1: weekend I started watching Agent Elvis. Being from the birthplace
- 19:04Speaker 1: of Elvis Presley, I had to check it out. What
- 19:07Speaker 1: I've watched so far is hilarious. It might be worth
- 19:09Speaker 1: the look anyway, lovey show. Keep up the great work,
- 19:11Speaker 1: all right, six six to two. Thank you. I started
- 19:16Speaker 1: Afterlife and it was too dark. I know it's funny,
- 19:19Speaker 1: it's Ricky Gervais, but it was just too that the
- 19:21Speaker 1: subject matter, it was too dark, couldn't do it. But
- 19:24Speaker 1: he's a genius and I freaking love him, and I
- 19:27Speaker 1: kind of feel like I'm going to go back to
- 19:29Speaker 1: it at some point. So thank you for bringing that
- 19:30Speaker 1: to my attention. Again. As for Agent Elvis, I saw
- 19:33Speaker 1: that pop up on my Netflix and I was like,
- 19:36Speaker 1: what the hell is this? Looked looked actually really funny.
- 19:41Speaker 1: Happy to hear a recommendation immediately just got released, I believe,
- 19:46Speaker 1: so I'm psyched to check out Agian Elvis. Thank you,
- 19:48Speaker 1: six six to two, all right? From the three one
- 19:51Speaker 1: oh Hey, Jake, I'm a tour manager, been doing it
- 19:53Speaker 1: for thirty years, just retired due to health. I was
- 19:55Speaker 1: a punk hardcore kid and just discovered the podcast, just
- 19:58Speaker 1: started to really dig through it, but really enjoying it
- 20:01Speaker 1: so far. All right, three one oho, Welcome, Welcome to Disgraceland.
- 20:06Speaker 1: Congrats on your retirement. Always here for the punkin hardcore kids.
- 20:10Speaker 1: All right. From the three oh five, Hey Jake, I'm
- 20:12Speaker 1: Sandy and I am completely obsessed with Disgraceland. I have
- 20:16Speaker 1: listened to almost everything out there in the past two weeks. WHOA,
- 20:20Speaker 1: that's a lot. That's true, Sandy, you got a lot
- 20:23Speaker 1: of me in your ears. The episode on Dimebag probably
- 20:27Speaker 1: the best of all so far. I can understand that.
- 20:29Speaker 1: I can see why someone would would favor that episode
- 20:31Speaker 1: over others. Here's some suggestions from Sandy. Can you dive
- 20:36Speaker 1: into Michael Hutchins from In Excess? And what a slime
- 20:39Speaker 1: Bob Geldoff is. She goes on to add a couple
- 20:43Speaker 1: more suggestions here, But I don't know the I know
- 20:45Speaker 1: Geldof's involved with the Michael Hutchins story somehow, and I
- 20:48Speaker 1: don't really know how. My not my area of expertise.
- 20:54Speaker 1: But I can tell you, Sandy, Michael Hutchins is on
- 20:57Speaker 1: the schedule and we will be releasing that In Excess
- 21:00Speaker 1: episode later this year. So that should make you happy,
- 21:05Speaker 1: all right? From the seven six, Hello Disgraceland Gods. That's
- 21:11Speaker 1: a little much, but we'll take it. I want to
- 21:13Speaker 1: thank you for the welcome distraction as of late with
- 21:15Speaker 1: the backlog. On January seventeenth this year, I lost my
- 21:18Speaker 1: father unexpectedly, and I wasn't in the greatest place to
- 21:22Speaker 1: listen to any music since my music was blended with
- 21:25Speaker 1: the music he introduced me to. I needed something to
- 21:28Speaker 1: ease me back in, and your podcast was it. I'm
- 21:31Speaker 1: still raw over it from time to time, but learning
- 21:35Speaker 1: to live with it is hard anyway. Thank you all
- 21:38Speaker 1: for the great episodes and stories to keep me from
- 21:40Speaker 1: losing my proverbial shit over these past few weeks. From
- 21:43Speaker 1: the seven to six, Wow, I'm truly sorry for your loss,
- 21:48Speaker 1: the loss of your dad, the unexpected loss of your father.
- 21:51Speaker 1: I can't imagine that type of pain. And as someone
- 21:57Speaker 1: who's experienced loss in this world like most people have,
- 22:02Speaker 1: I know that any distraction can be tremendously valuable. So
- 22:06Speaker 1: I'm very happy to hear that the silly little podcast
- 22:10Speaker 1: that we may have been able to help out in
- 22:12Speaker 1: some way. All right? From the four to four to three, Hey, Jake,
- 22:15Speaker 1: I love the show Disgraceland as well as bad Lands.
- 22:17Speaker 1: I can't find the episode you did about Hank Williams.
- 22:20Speaker 1: Can you please let me know which episode which season
- 22:23Speaker 1: it is from? So the Hank Williams episode is from
- 22:25Speaker 1: I believe season nine or ten. I'm not exactly sure
- 22:32Speaker 1: it's in the previously exclusive archive. We'll have it out
- 22:36Speaker 1: to you soon in the next couple months. At the latest.
- 22:39Speaker 1: We're doing our best to get these out, releasing new
- 22:42Speaker 1: episodes every single day four four three, So just get
- 22:47Speaker 1: in there. You'll find something to replace the Hank one
- 22:50Speaker 1: in the meantime. All right, from the five oh eight.
- 22:53Speaker 1: I've just been catching up on the podcast and listening
- 22:55Speaker 1: to the January tenth after party. January tenth, that was
- 22:58Speaker 1: a long time ago. All right, have you watched Shit's Creek?
- 23:02Speaker 1: Do it? You won't regret it? Of course I've watched
- 23:04Speaker 1: shits Creek? Come on, man. Also, this is the texter
- 23:08Speaker 1: saying here. Also, if you haven't watched Primal Fear starring
- 23:10Speaker 1: Ed Norton, do so fantastic ending? Yes, I agree, amazing ending,
- 23:14Speaker 1: great movie, and you're right, the ending is fucking incredible.
- 23:17Speaker 1: And then then they go on to write sorry, wrong number.
- 23:24Speaker 1: Well I don't know who they were texting there, but
- 23:26Speaker 1: the content and the messaging was very on point for
- 23:30Speaker 1: this here podcast. All right, one more text? All right,
- 23:34Speaker 1: I got it from the three to zero two. Hey, Jake,
- 23:36Speaker 1: in reference to your statement that you move furniture in
- 23:39Speaker 1: high school, brings me back to the need for a
- 23:42Speaker 1: Warren Zevon episode. He was also a furniture mover or
- 23:45Speaker 1: carpet guy. I forget which, but I think there's a
- 23:48Speaker 1: connection there and you're destined to do that episode. Yeah.
- 23:51Speaker 1: I cannot wait to do the Warren Zevon episode because
- 23:53Speaker 1: I heard a thing. I don't know if it's true.
- 23:55Speaker 1: I'm gonna just hope and pray that it's true until
- 23:58Speaker 1: I dig into the research that he the Warren's dad
- 24:02Speaker 1: worked for Mickey Cohen, the legendary La Gangster, So that
- 24:06Speaker 1: would be a very cool story to dig into through
- 24:09Speaker 1: the perspective of Warren's yvon Texter goes on to say,
- 24:11Speaker 1: one last thing, your review of Babylon makes me have
- 24:14Speaker 1: to see it now. Wasn't interested before, but now I
- 24:16Speaker 1: have to see the disaster. Thanks. I'm gonna go ahead
- 24:18Speaker 1: and tell you here. Don't waste your time. You don't
- 24:20Speaker 1: have to see it. It's not good. He or she continues,
- 24:24Speaker 1: putting my vote in for a Nick Cave episode. So
- 24:27Speaker 1: much Nick Cave, so many Nick Cave requests. Every week
- 24:30Speaker 1: I get Nick Cave requests. And then the three or
- 24:33Speaker 1: two goes on to say, also, he is better than
- 24:35Speaker 1: Boogie Night's also Miller's crossing Coen Brothers after Blood Simple,
- 24:39Speaker 1: but before Barton Fink. Probably their best movie. That's a
- 24:44Speaker 1: huge statement. Is Miller's Crossing the best Coen Brothers movie.
- 24:47Speaker 1: I don't know about that. It might be, it might
- 24:50Speaker 1: be that's a good one to contemplate, but I think
- 24:53Speaker 1: I go Big Lebowski above Miller's Crossing. And then finally
- 24:57Speaker 1: the end of this text, Thread says, and my hubs
- 24:59Speaker 1: and I are our going over Boogie Nights versus Heat.
- 25:02Speaker 1: Hubbs likes Boogie Knights because of the time period and
- 25:05Speaker 1: how well it's executed. I claim, you, guys are dudes
- 25:08Speaker 1: and porn is the reason Heat is a better movie.
- 25:11Speaker 1: And if you don't mind, when you get a chance,
- 25:13Speaker 1: remind me of your top five movies. I have Good Fellas,
- 25:15Speaker 1: That Departed and Booie Knights. I forgot together two. That
- 25:17Speaker 1: Departed is not one of my top five favorite movies,
- 25:19Speaker 1: despite the fact that I'm from Boston and I am
- 25:22Speaker 1: a big Scorsese fan and big Leo and big Matt
- 25:24Speaker 1: Damon fan as well, But no Departy to not crack
- 25:27Speaker 1: the top five. The top five are off the top
- 25:30Speaker 1: of my head without thinking too much about it, Jaws, Goodfellas,
- 25:36Speaker 1: Pulp Fiction, Boogie Knights, and The Godfather. Those are the
- 25:41Speaker 1: top five, in no particular order, except for the fact
- 25:44Speaker 1: that Jaws is probably right there at number one. I
- 25:51Speaker 1: need more top five. Get at me with the top five,
- 25:54Speaker 1: help me consider this. It's a really hard thing to do.
- 25:57Speaker 1: And the more feedback I get from people on their
- 26:01Speaker 1: top five rex, I'll be able to better understand and
- 26:05Speaker 1: process my own feelings on this. All right, I gotta
- 26:09Speaker 1: go to a phone call. I'm gonna take a quick break,
- 26:11Speaker 1: and then I'm gonna come right back do the d
- 26:13Speaker 1: block here. You're not gonna hear the phone call part,
- 26:16Speaker 1: but you will hear the rest of this episode in
- 26:18Speaker 1: just a couple seconds. All right, it's the recommendations part.
- 26:36Speaker 1: This is the recommendations part, the part of the show
- 26:39Speaker 1: that doesn't have a theme song but deserves the theme song. Well,
- 26:42Speaker 1: one listener, Mike, good old Mike from the three to
- 26:46Speaker 1: zero two stepped up sent in some of his music.
- 26:49Speaker 1: Mike says, Jake, your recommendation themes song, problems solution, and
- 26:55Speaker 1: you can afford it because it's free and there's a
- 26:58Speaker 1: link and you link in.
- 27:01Speaker 2: Is what we.
- 27:02Speaker 1: Got playing this on my phone. This is the recommendations pop.
- 27:08Speaker 1: It's a recommendations pop pop Papa. It's a recommendations pop
- 27:12Speaker 1: pop pa pa. All right, Mike, I dig the hustle man,
- 27:17Speaker 1: Thank you, Thank you very much, Mike. Track is cool,
- 27:19Speaker 1: but I have a specific thing in my head that
- 27:21Speaker 1: I'm going for. I'm going for that classic nineties sitcom
- 27:24Speaker 1: thing that Kelsey Grammer tossed Alvin Scrambled Eggs theme song,
- 27:27Speaker 1: super cheesy harmonize, female vocals. Your shit is good. It's
- 27:32Speaker 1: just not what I'm looking for, but I appreciate you
- 27:35Speaker 1: sending it in. I'll know what I'm looking for when
- 27:37Speaker 1: I hear it. In the meantime, everyone check out Mike's
- 27:39Speaker 1: music Mike Mauer m A U R E R on Spotify.
- 27:45Speaker 1: And you know, guys, if you are musicians and you
- 27:47Speaker 1: think you got a track that might serve us well
- 27:50Speaker 1: here in the theme song department for the recommendations part,
- 27:54Speaker 1: then go ahead and send it our way six one
- 27:56Speaker 1: seven nine zero six six six three eight. No promises
- 28:00Speaker 1: that it will get played, no promises that we will
- 28:03Speaker 1: use it, and of course only send if you're willing
- 28:06Speaker 1: to let us use it for free, let us play
- 28:09Speaker 1: it all that stuff. I hope that that disclaimer works
- 28:12Speaker 1: there all right. The recommendation's part what I've been watching,
- 28:16Speaker 1: what I've been reading, and what I've been listening to.
- 28:18Speaker 1: I've been watching Still Party Down. I'm loving the reboot,
- 28:21Speaker 1: but I'm having a tough time hanging with the week
- 28:23Speaker 1: to week release schedule. So I took another of your recommendations.
- 28:27Speaker 1: Thank you, guys, and I fired up Better Things, the
- 28:30Speaker 1: Pam ad lo On series. I don't know how you
- 28:32Speaker 1: pronounced Pam's last name. I apologize if I'm pronouncing it incorrectly.
- 28:37Speaker 1: She was in Lucky Louie. She's been in a bunch
- 28:39Speaker 1: of stuff. I think she was in Louis CK's other
- 28:42Speaker 1: show just called Louis, or at least on a couple
- 28:46Speaker 1: episodes I can't remember. Anyways, I love this series Better Things.
- 28:51Speaker 1: I like it a lot more than I thought I
- 28:53Speaker 1: would like it, So thank you to whoever suggested Better Things.
- 28:57Speaker 1: Looking forward to digging into this. I watched two episodes
- 29:01Speaker 1: last night. It's good to know that, being an adult
- 29:05Speaker 1: in the world and a parent of multiple children, it's
- 29:13Speaker 1: good to know that others are feeling the chaos. I
- 29:16Speaker 1: know it's real, but so oftentimes we look out in
- 29:19Speaker 1: the world and the reflection we Get Back is one
- 29:21Speaker 1: of perfection, and it's not real. It's fake, it's phony,
- 29:24Speaker 1: it's not authentic. Life is not perfect, life is messy.
- 29:27Speaker 1: Better Things captures that in a way that's pretty compelling. See.
- 29:30Speaker 1: If I stick with the show, I'll keep watching it.
- 29:32Speaker 1: I'll let you guys know. As I mentioned multiple times
- 29:35Speaker 1: already on this episode, and as I mentioned previously, I
- 29:39Speaker 1: am rewatching Heat kind of a slow burn the rewatch.
- 29:44Speaker 1: I don't sit, like I said and watch the whole
- 29:46Speaker 1: thing all the way through. I watch a little here,
- 29:47Speaker 1: watch a little there every other night or so. It's
- 29:50Speaker 1: become a comforting thing for me. I still can't believe
- 29:53Speaker 1: how unhinged and hysterical al Pacino is in this movie.
- 29:57Speaker 1: I think it's like it's worthy. Unhit thing works the best,
- 30:02Speaker 1: even better than in Scarface. I don't love Scarface. How's
- 30:05Speaker 1: that for a take? It's the truth. I don't love it.
- 30:07Speaker 1: I mean, obviously I get its iconic place and culture,
- 30:11Speaker 1: but his Tony Montana is so fucking all over the
- 30:14Speaker 1: place and unlikable, and he's forecasting what's to come later
- 30:19Speaker 1: with the whole huah thing definitely gets into that and Heat,
- 30:23Speaker 1: but it's less it's less of a putoff in heat
- 30:27Speaker 1: for whatever reason, maybe because he picks his spots. I
- 30:30Speaker 1: don't know, all right. I watched for the first time
- 30:33Speaker 1: ever this past weekend Martin Scorsese's The Last Temptation of Christ,
- 30:38Speaker 1: and I was shocked at how staggeringly beautiful this film
- 30:43Speaker 1: is the soundtrack as well. Peter Gabriel. I didn't realize
- 30:46Speaker 1: Peter Gabriel did the soundtrack for this movie, and he
- 30:48Speaker 1: hits it out of the park. The music is so good.
- 30:50Speaker 1: The movie's so good. I'm not trying to just talk
- 30:52Speaker 1: about the music, but the music is so good that
- 30:54Speaker 1: I watched the movie and I immediately found the soundtrack
- 30:58Speaker 1: and started listening to it walking around my house as
- 31:02Speaker 1: I was shutting down for the night. It's going to
- 31:04Speaker 1: become my new sort of like go to bed chill music.
- 31:07Speaker 1: Here for a little bit. Some of it's intense, but
- 31:10Speaker 1: a lot of it is right in that sweet spot
- 31:14Speaker 1: for my going to bed ritual that I need. So
- 31:17Speaker 1: Last Temptation of Christ's soundtrack. I don't know how it
- 31:20Speaker 1: holds up if you've never seen the movie. I can
- 31:23Speaker 1: imagine that it might be sort of a hard listen
- 31:27Speaker 1: or a different or strange listen out of the context
- 31:30Speaker 1: of the film, but having the film in my recent memory,
- 31:34Speaker 1: it's making me love this music. Peter Gabriel incredibly talented,
- 31:38Speaker 1: not telling anyone anything they don't know already, all right.
- 31:41Speaker 1: When I'm reading, I read Thomas Mallin's diaries in The
- 31:44Speaker 1: New Yorker. Thomas Mallin is a historical fiction author who
- 31:48Speaker 1: came up under Gorvi dal What happened was, I was
- 31:51Speaker 1: driving home from the airport one night recently and I
- 31:54Speaker 1: heard this guy on Terry Gross's Fresh Air, and it
- 32:00Speaker 1: was one of those things where I just kind of
- 32:01Speaker 1: dropped in in the middle of the interview. Was on
- 32:03Speaker 1: the radio, so I had no idea who was talking,
- 32:07Speaker 1: and I found him to be this very fascinating character.
- 32:10Speaker 1: Of course, you know, about ten minutes later she reintroduces
- 32:13Speaker 1: him as she does, and I find out who this
- 32:16Speaker 1: guy is. Thomas Mallin, who worked for as an editor
- 32:18Speaker 1: for gor Vi Dao, one of my favorite authors, another
- 32:20Speaker 1: historical fiction author. But what Mallan writes about in The
- 32:24Speaker 1: New Yorker and what he was kind of pushing on
- 32:27Speaker 1: Terry Gross's show, is his memoirs from living in New
- 32:32Speaker 1: York city during the AIDS pandemic the nineteen eighties. It's
- 32:35Speaker 1: a tremendous read for many many reasons, and it's a
- 32:38Speaker 1: short read too. I highly recommend. It's in the New
- 32:40Speaker 1: Yorker magazine Thomas Mallin's Diaries. Go check that out. I
- 32:44Speaker 1: also I found a really great translation of the New
- 32:47Speaker 1: Testament by JB. Phillips. It was published in nineteen sixty three.
- 32:50Speaker 1: It's less academic than the Gospels translation that I read
- 32:54Speaker 1: this time last year. This book is, of course used.
- 32:58Speaker 1: It's from, like I said, nineteen sixty three, and it's
- 33:00Speaker 1: inscribed to someone named Butch, congratulating him on his confirmation.
- 33:05Speaker 1: It's from some nice folks named Gloria and Russ. I
- 33:08Speaker 1: wonder what happened to Butch, And I wonder who Gloria
- 33:11Speaker 1: and Russ were to him. I wonder if any of
- 33:13Speaker 1: them are still alive. Are any of us really alive?
- 33:16Speaker 1: Five to one baby one in five. No one here
- 33:18Speaker 1: gets out alive. See you on the other side of
- 33:20Speaker 1: this break. All right, let's recap number one. The Peter
