- 0:00Speaker 1: When you have your next hurdle, remind yourself that you've
- 0:03Speaker 1: trained for this, this is what you're built for, this
- 0:06Speaker 1: is what you're here for, and never forget that in
- 0:09Speaker 1: order to build yourself up, you have to break down first,
- 0:11Speaker 1: So don't be afraid of that breakdown.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Hey everyone, Emily Evadi here bringing you another installment of
- 0:32Speaker 2: Turning the Page, a special five episode series from Hurdle,
- 0:37Speaker 2: a wellness focused podcast where I sit down with inspiring
- 0:40Speaker 2: individuals to talk about everything from their big wins to
- 0:43Speaker 2: how they've gotten through some of life's toughest moments. On
- 0:47Speaker 2: the show, you can expect vulnerability, motivation, and candid discussions
- 0:52Speaker 2: with everyone from top athletes to aspiring entrepreneurs on what
- 0:55Speaker 2: it really takes to follow your passions.
- 0:58Speaker 3: My mission is simple.
- 1:00Speaker 2: To inspire you to be your best self, move with intention,
- 1:05Speaker 2: and have some fun along the way. And that is
- 1:09Speaker 2: why I am here this week of all weeks, especially
- 1:13Speaker 2: in your ear five times. That's if you know you're
- 1:17Speaker 2: listening to this as they come out in the queue.
- 1:20Speaker 3: Here's the deal.
- 1:21Speaker 2: I know, like I said yesterday in the episode with
- 1:24Speaker 2: Coach Bennett, that twenty twenty has had its fair share
- 1:28Speaker 2: of hardships. Some may even refer to it as a
- 1:32Speaker 2: dumpster fire. I get it, It's been a lot, but
- 1:35Speaker 2: we can do hard things and together we can get
- 1:39Speaker 2: through it all. And that's why I am reconnecting with
- 1:42Speaker 2: some of my favorite guests to date.
- 1:45Speaker 3: Not that I play favorites, but you get the gist.
- 1:48Speaker 2: Some unbelievable humans to give you the inspiration you need
- 1:51Speaker 2: to keep on keeping on and start twenty twenty one
- 1:55Speaker 2: with a fresh perspective. Today, I am connecting with none
- 1:59Speaker 2: other then Jess Sims. She is a Peloton instructor, a
- 2:04Speaker 2: dear friend of mine, and this conversation and just Jess
- 2:08Speaker 2: period makes me so happy. We actually caught up irl
- 2:14Speaker 2: this past weekend over some delicious holiday themed drinks shout
- 2:18Speaker 2: out to the Garrett And you know, you know when
- 2:21Speaker 2: you just walk away from a conversation and you feel
- 2:24Speaker 2: happy and whole and good like, that is how Jess
- 2:28Speaker 2: makes me feel. I'm so grateful to have her in
- 2:32Speaker 2: my life, and there's just nothing better. I'm also one
- 2:36Speaker 2: of those people that really loves seeing my friends do
- 2:39Speaker 2: good and succeed, and I get no greater joy than
- 2:43Speaker 2: hyping them up and cheering them on and just just
- 2:46Speaker 2: makes me feel excited because I just see her and
- 2:50Speaker 2: the good that she's doing and it's just it's great.
- 2:53Speaker 2: So anyway, today's episode me and Jess getting after. We're
- 2:56Speaker 2: getting honest about what twenty twenty has been like for
- 2:59Speaker 2: her and the strang that she's gained from the Peloton
- 3:02Speaker 2: members and the community during an insane, insane time. She
- 3:06Speaker 2: also talks to me about the first thing that she's
- 3:09Speaker 2: gonna do when life feels a little bit more normal,
- 3:11Speaker 2: what she's looking forward to in the new year, the
- 3:14Speaker 2: product that helped her get through twenty twenty, and her
- 3:18Speaker 2: best advice as we navigate life's hurdles today, tomorrow, the
- 3:22Speaker 2: next day, and.
- 3:23Speaker 3: Long after that.
- 3:25Speaker 2: Before we get into the swing of things today, I
- 3:27Speaker 2: have to give it up for my sponsor, Athletic Greens.
- 3:31Speaker 2: I'm so grateful to them for helping to make this
- 3:34Speaker 2: week of episodes possible. And when I say that, I
- 3:37Speaker 2: do want to clarify, of course, this all takes time,
- 3:40Speaker 2: as you can understand, the recording, the editing, the producing
- 3:43Speaker 2: and this podcast. It's a huge, huge part of my
- 3:46Speaker 2: day to day. So it just means so much to
- 3:48Speaker 2: me that Athletic Greens is down with me and my mission.
- 3:53Speaker 2: And it's even more special really because it's such a
- 3:56Speaker 2: big part of my regular routine.
- 3:58Speaker 3: Like I believe in them, like they believe in me.
- 4:01Speaker 2: I'm talking to you about this stuff because I actually
- 4:04Speaker 2: used it.
- 4:05Speaker 3: I mentioned this on my.
- 4:06Speaker 2: Instagram stories yesterday that adding athletic Greens into my regular
- 4:09Speaker 2: routine is probably one of the best things I have
- 4:11Speaker 2: done for my health as an adult.
- 4:13Speaker 3: Period.
- 4:14Speaker 2: I used to be just like so haphazard about the
- 4:17Speaker 2: vitamins I was taking and literally just buying whatever I
- 4:20Speaker 2: saw on the drug store shelf that looked good. But
- 4:24Speaker 2: now I drink Athletic Greens every single day, and I
- 4:27Speaker 2: know that I'm giving my body what it really needs,
- 4:30Speaker 2: including a multi vitamin, functional mushrooms, and other immune supporting
- 4:35Speaker 2: ingredients like vitamin C A, zinc sitrate, and ashwragonda to
- 4:39Speaker 2: support my immune system and also consistency in my training,
- 4:43Speaker 2: whether I am prepping for.
- 4:44Speaker 3: A marathon or just my day to day.
- 4:47Speaker 2: I mix it with water every single morning and it
- 4:49Speaker 2: allows me to hydrate and drink down seventy five of
- 4:52Speaker 2: the best hard to find ingredients that to be real.
- 4:56Speaker 2: Before I didn't fully understand just how much I needed.
- 5:01Speaker 2: You've got to get in on the Athletic Greens game.

- 5:33Speaker 2: page series Hurdle over on Instagram at Hurdle podcast and
- 5:37Speaker 2: I am over at Emily Abody. With that, let's get
- 5:42Speaker 2: to hurdling.
- 5:50Speaker 3: Today.
- 5:51Speaker 2: I am sitting down with Jess Simms. She is a
- 5:54Speaker 2: peloton instructor, an extraordinary human.
- 5:57Speaker 3: Jess, how you doing?
- 6:00Speaker 1: Always better when I get to talk to you.
- 6:01Speaker 2: Emily, Oh, I gush I watched I just this makes
- 6:05Speaker 2: my day.
- 6:05Speaker 3: I've been looking forward to this conversation all day.
- 6:08Speaker 2: Here on Hurdle, I am catching up with some of
- 6:11Speaker 2: my all time favorite guests from the last couple of years.
- 6:15Speaker 2: A way to round out the year, and so naturally
- 6:20Speaker 2: one of the most listened to episodes of Hurdle in
- 6:23Speaker 2: twenty twenty.
- 6:24Speaker 1: Fun Fast really, yes, stop it, You're a star, Jess.
- 6:29Speaker 2: You're making me blush things that you can't see on
- 6:32Speaker 2: the podcast. So I'm bringing Jess Sims into the mix. Jess,
- 6:35Speaker 2: how our loaded question to start us off? How are
- 6:39Speaker 2: you doing?
- 6:39Speaker 1: I love me a loaded question right now. I'm doing well.
- 6:43Speaker 1: Thank you for asking. It is my day off, and yeah,
- 6:46Speaker 1: I'm like getting to all the adult things that I
- 6:48Speaker 1: like to push aside on my busy workdays and just enjoying.
- 6:52Speaker 1: It's snowing actually for the first time in New York
- 6:54Speaker 1: City today.
- 6:55Speaker 2: See technically speaking, it's been snowing for a few hours,
- 6:58Speaker 2: so I will take the like send with like for
- 7:01Speaker 2: the first time, with a grain of salt. I've definitely
- 7:04Speaker 2: seen snow this year, but this is like a day
- 7:06Speaker 2: of snow. Yes, I mean, nobody teaching and inspiring.
- 7:12Speaker 1: Oh you're so sweet, I mean, okay, fine, but yes,
- 7:14Speaker 1: fair Like I looked out the window and all I
- 7:16Speaker 1: see is just white, So it's a it's officially a
- 7:19Speaker 1: good snow day.
- 7:20Speaker 3: I'm into it. I'm into it.
- 7:21Speaker 2: So I mean we're talking about snow now, but what
- 7:24Speaker 2: we've been talking about for the last year is the
- 7:26Speaker 2: fact that this year is unlike any other.
- 7:28Speaker 3: So give the hurdlers the details.
- 7:31Speaker 2: Catch me up a little bit, talk to me about
- 7:33Speaker 2: how your twenty twenty has been.
- 7:36Speaker 1: Oh man, twenty twenty, what a year it has been.
- 7:41Speaker 1: It blows my mind that it's December. Let me start
- 7:43Speaker 1: off by saying that I feel like the last before
- 7:48Speaker 1: before twenty twenty BT, I'm going I'm going to coin
- 7:52Speaker 1: that officially right here. The last like memory I have
- 7:55Speaker 1: before pre pandemic was Black History Month at Peloton, and
- 7:59Speaker 1: so it's wild because now we're revving up for Black
- 8:04Speaker 1: History Month twenty twenty one, and so I'm like, wait
- 8:06Speaker 1: a minute, Like, I just feel like it's been a
- 8:08Speaker 1: time travel. But it's been a year full of a
- 8:14Speaker 1: lot of stuff, a lot of alone time, a lot
- 8:16Speaker 1: of reflection, a lot of community, a lot of realization
- 8:21Speaker 1: that I'm really excited to dive into with you today.
- 8:24Speaker 1: And I wouldn't have traded, of course, this year has
- 8:27Speaker 1: been brutal for so many reasons, for so many people.
- 8:30Speaker 1: But I wouldn't trade this year because it's done so
- 8:32Speaker 1: much for me personally, it's.
- 8:34Speaker 2: Also got to be really interesting. I mean, especially with
- 8:37Speaker 2: what you do. So many people around the country, around
- 8:42Speaker 2: the world are looking toward Peloton this year for inspiration
- 8:48Speaker 2: and motivation and like sanity, and you are the person
- 8:52Speaker 2: that is providing that sanity to so many people. So
- 8:54Speaker 2: I would imagine that although what a beautiful opportunity to
- 8:59Speaker 2: connect with these people, like pressure is on. At least
- 9:03Speaker 2: that's how I would see it from my point point
- 9:05Speaker 2: of view, Like I would imagine that for you, maybe
- 9:07Speaker 2: more than ever, being really honest about what you need
- 9:12Speaker 2: and where you're at is so important to show up
- 9:15Speaker 2: for your community.
- 9:16Speaker 1: Totally, and I think that that's one of the things
- 9:18Speaker 1: that I pride myself on, is always being very real.
- 9:21Speaker 1: So I even was just talking a couple of weeks ago.
- 9:23Speaker 1: You might have heard it in class. By the way,
- 9:25Speaker 1: I thank you for taking classes that I love the
- 9:29Speaker 1: phrase amplify the positive, because it's not You don't want
- 9:32Speaker 1: to be overly optimistic to the point where you're annoying
- 9:35Speaker 1: and to the point where you're like, okay, but you're
- 9:37Speaker 1: undermining the pain and the suffering that so many people
- 9:39Speaker 1: are going through. But you can always find the positive
- 9:42Speaker 1: and by using the word amplify, it's acknowledging that life,
- 9:46Speaker 1: you know, is not all roses, but there are some
- 9:49Speaker 1: beautiful things and let's choose to put those up higher
- 9:51Speaker 1: and focus on those. And for me personally, it's the secret.
- 9:58Speaker 1: As you were just saying this whole thing, secret thing
- 9:59Speaker 1: that I would thinking about in my head was yes, Wow,
- 10:02Speaker 1: I am doing so much for other people. You know,
- 10:04Speaker 1: we're almost at four million members worldwide with at Peloton,
- 10:08Speaker 1: and I don't take that role lightly whatsoever. But the
- 10:13Speaker 1: secret is that y'all have done more for me than
- 10:16Speaker 1: you could ever imagine. Because there was a point in
- 10:18Speaker 1: time where I was not working out unless I was teaching,
- 10:21Speaker 1: I couldn't get myself to be motivated enough to get
- 10:24Speaker 1: up and teach. And because I didn't want to do
- 10:26Speaker 1: it for myself, I was like, oh, it's easy to
- 10:28Speaker 1: just you know, hang in today. It's easy today to
- 10:30Speaker 1: just you know, forget about those goals and forget about
- 10:33Speaker 1: the things I said I wanted to do. But because
- 10:35Speaker 1: it's my job, because I need to show up, I
- 10:37Speaker 1: find my strength in the stories of our members. And
- 10:40Speaker 1: so when you get a DM or a comment or
- 10:45Speaker 1: you're tagged in a post of someone saying, Jess, you're
- 10:49Speaker 1: the only bright spot. Peloton is the only bright spot
- 10:52Speaker 1: in my twenty twenty. I'm a central worker, my mom
- 10:56Speaker 1: is sick, I'm a single parent, I have three kids
- 10:59Speaker 1: under three. Like there's the stories never seems to amaze me.
- 11:03Speaker 1: And on my tough as dark as day, I'm like,
- 11:05Speaker 1: these people need me, and I'm able to like transcend
- 11:09Speaker 1: myself and realize that it's bigger than me, and I'm
- 11:12Speaker 1: able to get up there and perform. And it helps me,
- 11:17Speaker 1: I hope, just as much as it helps others.
- 11:20Speaker 3: Oh for sure. For sure.
- 11:22Speaker 2: And I mean when we talk about like twenty twenty
- 11:25Speaker 2: as a whole and the lessons that you've learned, I mean,
- 11:29Speaker 2: showing up has to be a big one, Like to
- 11:33Speaker 2: keep showing up when stuff isn't going to plan, when
- 11:36Speaker 2: stuff feels hard, when you don't wanna yes.
- 11:41Speaker 1: Yes, and something. A big lesson that I learned this
- 11:45Speaker 1: year is that I've been saying this for a minute now,
- 11:50Speaker 1: but it has a whole new you know, idea behind it.
- 11:52Speaker 1: Now with this year is that life is happening for me,
- 11:57Speaker 1: it's not happening to me. And it goes with that
- 12:00Speaker 1: saying that, you know, the saying drives everyone nuts. Right
- 12:03Speaker 1: When someone says to you, oh, and something happens to you,
- 12:05Speaker 1: and someone says, oh, Emily, everything happens for a reason,
- 12:07Speaker 1: You're like, please do not speak to me. You are
- 12:09Speaker 1: in time out, Like that's what you want your original
- 12:12Speaker 1: thing to say. But I was talking to one of
- 12:13Speaker 1: my girlfriends a couple of weeks ago, maybe even a
- 12:15Speaker 1: month now, and she said that she heard the phrase
- 12:17Speaker 1: reframed as everything happens for an opportunity. And I loved
- 12:21Speaker 1: that because you can always, no matter how tough the
- 12:24Speaker 1: situation is, you can find some sort of opportunity for something.
- 12:28Speaker 1: Whether it's an opportunity for you to step up, it's
- 12:30Speaker 1: an opportunity for you to sit down, it's an opportunity
- 12:32Speaker 1: for you to be grateful, it's an opportunity for you
- 12:34Speaker 1: to accept something you know, like, there's an opportunity for
- 12:38Speaker 1: all of that. And I think that that has been
- 12:41Speaker 1: reaffirmed this year so much for me personally.
- 12:45Speaker 2: When we think about the opportunities then that have come
- 12:49Speaker 2: your way this year, what have you maybe been able
- 12:52Speaker 2: to make more space for because of the circumstance that
- 12:57Speaker 2: you wouldn't have been able to find space for before.
- 13:01Speaker 1: Oh that is a good question. I think this old
- 13:05Speaker 1: me wouldn't have said something like this because I would
- 13:07Speaker 1: have said, oh, that's selfish or something. But I found
- 13:11Speaker 1: space for myself, for me because I am so my
- 13:15Speaker 1: first thought was, oh, well, we have so many new
- 13:18Speaker 1: members at Peloton and I've given space. But I would
- 13:20Speaker 1: have done that regardless. But because of this time, I
- 13:25Speaker 1: have been able to give myself, you know, the space
- 13:28Speaker 1: to really listen to what my mind and my body needs.
- 13:31Speaker 1: Like I meditate every morning. Now I have a morning ritual,
- 13:34Speaker 1: which I didn't have before this because my schedule looks
- 13:37Speaker 1: so different on any given day and I didn't prioritize it.
- 13:40Speaker 1: And so I've been able to take a step back
- 13:42Speaker 1: to really think bigger picture for myself. And that's been
- 13:44Speaker 1: such a blessing.
- 13:45Speaker 3: I love that.
- 13:46Speaker 2: Okay, so one of our lessons here, make time for myself,
- 13:50Speaker 2: see things as an opportunity.
- 13:52Speaker 3: What's another lesson that you have learned this year?
- 13:57Speaker 1: So something that I have learned is that there is
- 14:02Speaker 1: no such thing as failure. I think that I've always
- 14:05Speaker 1: I've loved the phrase failure is just feedback and I
- 14:08Speaker 1: believe in that too, but I must have been in
- 14:10Speaker 1: a podcast or something or a book I read in
- 14:12Speaker 1: the past few months. But failure is relative, and so
- 14:16Speaker 1: we live our lives and moving forward, but we only
- 14:20Speaker 1: understand our lives when we look back. And so with that,
- 14:24Speaker 1: failure is not anything but a redirection. So right now,
- 14:28Speaker 1: if something happened to me something you know, I wanted
- 14:31Speaker 1: this gig that I really wanted, and that I didn't
- 14:33Speaker 1: get it, well, guess what, Yes, I would consider that
- 14:35Speaker 1: right now to be a failure. Five years from now,
- 14:38Speaker 1: who knows, maybe something a competing company you know, wanted
- 14:41Speaker 1: to work with me, and I wouldn't have been able
- 14:44Speaker 1: to do that if I had done. You know, just
- 14:46Speaker 1: all these little things that you take for granted because
- 14:49Speaker 1: in the moment you're sucking it, you're living life, moving forward,
- 14:51Speaker 1: and you're like, damn, I really wanted that. But then
- 14:53Speaker 1: later down, down, later on down the line, you're like, actually,
- 14:55Speaker 1: that wasn't a failure at all. That was just a
- 14:57Speaker 1: redirection that helped put me where I should be.
- 15:01Speaker 2: For the person who gets rejected or doesn't get the
- 15:07Speaker 2: thing that it is that they wanted, whether that has
- 15:10Speaker 2: anything to do with work, or in their personal life
- 15:13Speaker 2: or what have you. And they are in this circumstance
- 15:16Speaker 2: and feeling just really stuck and unmotivated and unsure. What
- 15:22Speaker 2: advice do you offer them in that hurdle moment?
- 15:26Speaker 1: Great question, I would say, dig into your arsenal of whys.
- 15:32Speaker 1: I often hear a lot of trainers and non trainers,
- 15:35Speaker 1: just to anyone in any field, talk about how important
- 15:39Speaker 1: your why is. But I would actually argue how important
- 15:42Speaker 1: your whys are. I think that something that crushes us
- 15:47Speaker 1: is that sometimes we put all of our whys in
- 15:50Speaker 1: one basket, or or our basket is just one why.
- 15:54Speaker 1: But if your basket is full of whys, you're able
- 15:57Speaker 1: to say, okay, let's talk about you know, because fitness
- 16:00Speaker 1: stay on brand.
- 16:00Speaker 3: Right.
- 16:01Speaker 1: If your only reason why you work out is because
- 16:06Speaker 1: it makes you feel good, well guess what you might
- 16:08Speaker 1: make up one morning and be like, I don't feel
- 16:10Speaker 1: like feeling good today, I'm actually good with not feeling
- 16:12Speaker 1: good today. Then you're not going to work out. But
- 16:15Speaker 1: if you have otherwise, of I want to set a
- 16:18Speaker 1: good example for my kids. I know that I'm nicer
- 16:22Speaker 1: to other people when I work out. I you know,
- 16:26Speaker 1: like I'm training for a marathon. I'm training for some
- 16:29Speaker 1: sort of You can go into that basket of wise
- 16:32Speaker 1: and choose the one that is going to get you
- 16:34Speaker 1: into that discipline headspace to do what you wanted to do.
- 16:37Speaker 1: So to that person that has that quote unquote failure
- 16:40Speaker 1: or who doesn't get what they wanted, I would ask
- 16:43Speaker 1: why do you want it? And do you really want it?
- 16:45Speaker 1: Because sometimes we get caught up in oh, I want this,
- 16:48Speaker 1: but then we can't say why. If you don't have
- 16:49Speaker 1: an arsenal of whys for what you're going after, then
- 16:52Speaker 1: maybe you don't actually want that thing. And that's okay.
- 16:54Speaker 2: If you had to pick one product that helped you
- 16:58Speaker 2: live a healthy and happier life in twenty twenty, what
- 17:04Speaker 2: is that product?
- 17:07Speaker 1: I can't say. Dogs. Dogs aren't a product. I don't know.
- 17:10Speaker 3: I mean like dog, not really, you've had grace.
- 17:15Speaker 1: One of my other life lessons though, is we don't
- 17:17Speaker 1: deserve dogs. Dogs are like the best thing ever. I've
- 17:21Speaker 1: always appreciated Siana Grace, but she has single handedly helped
- 17:25Speaker 1: me get through this pandemic in a much better positive way.
- 17:28Speaker 1: I'm so jealous, and just listen, you gotta get yourself
- 17:30Speaker 1: a Siana grace sasty but worth it. This is gonna
- 17:34Speaker 1: sound so cliche, but I'm really sorry. I'm not sorry.
- 17:37Speaker 1: The number one product that has literally transformed everything mind, body,
- 17:42Speaker 1: heart work, ethic is Peloton.
- 17:45Speaker 3: Can I tell you?
- 17:46Speaker 2: And I'm actually I mean, I'm not surprised that you
- 17:49Speaker 2: said this, but I asked this question recently on social
- 17:55Speaker 2: media and I was blown away at how how many
- 18:00Speaker 2: other people also said Peloton.
- 18:03Speaker 3: Like, if I got.
- 18:05Speaker 2: Maybe two hundred and fifty responses, which is like a
- 18:08Speaker 2: decent chunk of responses, I would say like a third
- 18:12Speaker 2: at least of those people, out of all of the
- 18:14Speaker 2: things they could have said or thrown into the mix,
- 18:17Speaker 2: said Peloton.
- 18:18Speaker 1: Well, Emily, like, think about this. We are a global company,
- 18:22Speaker 1: and for the first time, at least in our lives,
- 18:25Speaker 1: but in most people, I mean pretty much almost everyone's lives.
- 18:28Speaker 1: We are all going through the same thing together at
- 18:32Speaker 1: the same time. Of course, it looks different for every person,
- 18:35Speaker 1: and depending on where you are, there's lots of different intricacies,
- 18:38Speaker 1: but globally, we are all going through this pandemic, and
- 18:42Speaker 1: there's something to be said. When you are isolated, you
- 18:46Speaker 1: feel physically alone, but then you hop into a class,
- 18:49Speaker 1: and there are Robin had her turkey burn. This year
- 18:53Speaker 1: had fifty thousand plus people live emily sharing this experience
- 19:00Speaker 1: live I thought the first ever live fit family class
- 19:04Speaker 1: on Thanksgiving morning and Alex Dussant jumped in. There were
- 19:07Speaker 1: over three thousand families, not people, families that were connecting
- 19:11Speaker 1: with each other, whether together in their own household. But
- 19:14Speaker 1: do you know how many dms I got of people
- 19:15Speaker 1: saying that they did that class together on FaceTime or
- 19:18Speaker 1: they did that class with their aunt across the country
- 19:20Speaker 1: in a different country on zoom so peloton. Like I said,
- 19:26Speaker 1: it gives you that great sweat. Obviously, you're always going
- 19:29Speaker 1: to get a great sweat and that always boosts your mood.
- 19:31Speaker 1: But you're doing it with the community of people, and
- 19:34Speaker 1: you're doing it with people all over the world. So
- 19:36Speaker 1: in a time where you feel so lonely and so
- 19:41Speaker 1: unmotivated and so so many different adjectives I could throw
- 19:44Speaker 1: in there, you are not alone and during this period,
- 19:48Speaker 1: that is the most comforting feeling.
- 19:50Speaker 2: To have all one hundred percent and I can totally,
- 19:53Speaker 2: totally really, I mean, it was funny the other day
- 19:57Speaker 2: when I went to go when I went and I'm
- 19:59Speaker 2: you air.
- 20:00Speaker 3: Quotes, which doesn't help on a podcast.
- 20:01Speaker 2: But when I went to go take Robin Spin class,
- 20:06Speaker 2: like at five o'clock on a Friday, and I also
- 20:08Speaker 2: took your boot Camp class at ten am on a Saturday.
- 20:11Speaker 2: And this is the first time in so long that
- 20:14Speaker 2: I've said like, oh, well, I'm taking a class at
- 20:17Speaker 2: five where I'm taking a class at ten And multiple
- 20:22Speaker 2: friends that I was chatting with they were like, wait,
- 20:24Speaker 2: where are you going to take a class?
- 20:25Speaker 3: I was like, no, it's just me. I have to
- 20:27Speaker 3: show up at this time. Wow.
- 20:29Speaker 1: Well no. But that's the thing about live classes is
- 20:31Speaker 1: it kind of likes that fire under You're like, okay, wait,
- 20:34Speaker 1: I want this live experience. I want to see you know, Tunday,
- 20:37Speaker 1: I want to see Ali. I want to see Emma,
- 20:38Speaker 1: like live in action, and because you feel it gives
- 20:41Speaker 1: you that heightened sense of being together. And the other
- 20:44Speaker 1: thing is this is something that blew my mind. And
- 20:46Speaker 1: I actually texted her the other day. Can I tell
- 20:48Speaker 1: you one of the closet experiences I've had with Peloton
- 20:51Speaker 1: is that I went I do sleep meditations pretty much
- 20:55Speaker 1: every night, and I put on a DT's newest I
- 20:58Speaker 1: think it was a twenty minute sleep meditation. I was
- 21:01Speaker 1: feeling anxious. I was having one of those moments that
- 21:05Speaker 1: we all have, but I was like, let me just
- 21:06Speaker 1: do this meditation and put myself to sleep. At ten
- 21:09Speaker 1: pm on a random let's call it Wednesday night, over
- 21:13Speaker 1: a thousand people meditating together to go to sleep, and
- 21:19Speaker 1: that feeling was sure. Like I said, I've taken so
- 21:21Speaker 1: many live classes, even not live you know, the thousands
- 21:24Speaker 1: of people. But to hear these wonderful words by such
- 21:28Speaker 1: a calming, beautiful force like a DT, and knowing that
- 21:33Speaker 1: other people are probably having those similar anxieties that I
- 21:36Speaker 1: was having before going to sleep, it was such a
- 21:39Speaker 1: beautiful way to end the day.
- 21:42Speaker 2: What excites you about twenty twenty one Hugs?
- 21:49Speaker 1: I'm gonna hug everyone. You get a hug, and you
- 21:52Speaker 1: get a hug, and you get a hug, everyone gets
- 21:55Speaker 1: a girl. I'm hugging everyone like everyone's getting.
- 21:58Speaker 3: It, like everybody's getting it.
- 22:00Speaker 1: So that is the main thing that I'm looking forward to.
- 22:04Speaker 1: Other things I'm looking forward to, for sure, traveling I
- 22:07Speaker 1: would love to. I have so many places now that
- 22:10Speaker 1: I would love to go see and spend time. And
- 22:13Speaker 1: then surprisingly I'm going to say that I'm really looking
- 22:16Speaker 1: forward to not forgetting this year. I really want to
- 22:20Speaker 1: remember the strength that I have gained this year through
- 22:23Speaker 1: the experiences that I've had this year, and I don't
- 22:25Speaker 1: want to take them for granted. I don't want to
- 22:27Speaker 1: forget this year.
- 22:28Speaker 3: Beautiful perspective.
- 22:30Speaker 2: Right now, Jess, in this very moment, you, as you
- 22:35Speaker 2: are right now, have an opportunity to offer the Justs
- 22:38Speaker 2: who is feeling probably a little bit scared back in
- 22:42Speaker 2: March at the beginning of all of this, a piece
- 22:47Speaker 2: of advice.
- 22:48Speaker 3: What do you tell her looking back on that right now?
- 22:54Speaker 1: Two things. The quick answer, cook more. I wish that
- 22:59Speaker 1: I cook sometimes to be like Jess, this is your
- 23:02Speaker 1: time to chef it up, because I definitely cooked, but
- 23:05Speaker 1: not as much as I would have liked. The longer answer,
- 23:08Speaker 1: what I would tell Jess at the beginning of the
- 23:12Speaker 1: year is find joy in the ordinary. I feel like
- 23:18Speaker 1: my whole life I have thrived in the highs and
- 23:22Speaker 1: the lows. I love those polarizing Okay, this is such
- 23:27Speaker 1: a great day, this is such a bad day. This
- 23:28Speaker 1: is and I would throw those labels good day, bad day.
- 23:31Speaker 1: And if I didn't have a good day, bad day,
- 23:33Speaker 1: I would be like, eh, someone say how's your day,
- 23:35Speaker 1: and I'm like eh, and it's like, why is it? Eh?
- 23:38Speaker 1: And it's just when I think about it, I'm like, actually,
- 23:40Speaker 1: it wasn't. It's just that nothing high or low, no
- 23:43Speaker 1: peaks and valleys. But guess what, the flatland is beautiful.
- 23:46Speaker 1: There's a lot of beauty in the flatland, because not
- 23:50Speaker 1: every day needs to have the zigzags. And so that's
- 23:54Speaker 1: what I would tell myself because that was something that
- 23:57Speaker 1: I have never experienced, especially as an adult. Is that
- 24:00Speaker 1: flat land and there's nothing wrong with There's actually so
- 24:04Speaker 1: much goodness in it.
- 24:06Speaker 2: Any vibe you're ride in through twenty twenty one, anything
- 24:09Speaker 2: you like yourself are like, this is my mindset? Aside
- 24:13Speaker 2: from I'm gonna hug everyone, you.
- 24:17Speaker 1: Know, outside of that, that's a good question. I would
- 24:20Speaker 1: say that.
- 24:21Speaker 3: You know what mine is?
- 24:23Speaker 2: Oh yes, all right, let me let me let me
- 24:25Speaker 2: tell you where I'm at my twenty twenty one vibe.
- 24:27Speaker 2: Aside from equally feeling the same way about hugs, is
- 24:32Speaker 2: work smarter, not harder? All of twenty twenty and I
- 24:38Speaker 2: think large in part because of the circumstance.
- 24:41Speaker 3: But let's not play the victim.
- 24:42Speaker 2: Here, I was just working my butt off to spin
- 24:47Speaker 2: my wheels over and over and over to not get
- 24:49Speaker 2: nearly as far as I felt like I used to
- 24:51Speaker 2: be able to get. And so I did get to
- 24:54Speaker 2: a place where I could do that without judgment. But
- 24:57Speaker 2: now I'm reflecting upon twenty two twenty as a whole
- 25:00Speaker 2: and asking myself, now that this is where I am,
- 25:04Speaker 2: how can I use what I have learned to work
- 25:07Speaker 2: smarter and not harder and not keep spinning my wheels
- 25:11Speaker 2: going forward?
- 25:12Speaker 1: I love that. Good for you.
- 25:15Speaker 3: Thanks, Wait, I.
- 25:16Speaker 1: Really love well. I mean but that I think that
- 25:18Speaker 1: speaks to even what I just mentioned, because it's so
- 25:21Speaker 1: good to it used to feel so good to just
- 25:23Speaker 1: be busy, like it felt natural. That was my baseline.
- 25:26Speaker 1: My baseline was busy. And now it's not cool to
- 25:28Speaker 1: be busy, you know, like it's not I love that vibe. Okay, Wow,
- 25:33Speaker 1: why are you busy sitting in your apartment all day? Like?
- 25:35Speaker 3: Do the stuff that matters?
- 25:37Speaker 2: Work on the stuff that matters, like, don't just be
- 25:39Speaker 2: busy to be busy?
- 25:41Speaker 3: Yes?
- 25:42Speaker 1: And so my vibe, I would say, is because the
- 25:45Speaker 1: first word that came to mind when you when you
- 25:47Speaker 1: said this is freedom. I think that another thing that
- 25:51Speaker 1: I had to let go of this year was timelines.
- 25:54Speaker 1: I feel like everything from what you ordered online to
- 25:58Speaker 1: what age you wanted to get. I already and have
- 26:00Speaker 1: kids that like those timelines. Screw them, forget about them,
- 26:06Speaker 1: freedom from them.
- 26:07Speaker 2: You know, almost used an expletive here, but I stopped
- 26:10Speaker 2: myself to keep this PG for the Peloton families that
- 26:13Speaker 2: might be listening.
- 26:14Speaker 1: Oh my gosh. Well it's funny. I haven't cursed either,
- 26:16Speaker 1: and I'm very shocked. I'm proud of myself. I'm not
- 26:18Speaker 1: cursing yet, so wow. But yeah, I think that that's
- 26:21Speaker 1: what that's what my vibe is going to be is
- 26:24Speaker 1: is breaking some rules, having some freedom, and being less
- 26:28Speaker 1: rigid with timelines.
- 26:30Speaker 2: Any wisdom you want to leave the hurdlers with going
- 26:33Speaker 2: in to a new year.
- 26:37Speaker 1: The thing that I just want you to really really
- 26:40Speaker 1: remember going into this new year is that you can
- 26:42Speaker 1: do hard things.
- 26:43Speaker 3: How do you know?
- 26:44Speaker 1: Because you've done them and you've survived all of those
- 26:46Speaker 1: hard things, all those hard days. And so when you
- 26:50Speaker 1: have your next hurdle, when you have your next struggle,
- 26:54Speaker 1: remind yourself that you've trained for this. This is this
- 26:57Speaker 1: is what you're built for. This is what you're here for,
- 26:59Speaker 1: and never forget that in order to build yourself up,
- 27:02Speaker 1: you have to break down first, So don't be afraid
- 27:04Speaker 1: of that breakdown killing In.
- 27:05Speaker 3: At the end of this, Justins, what a home run.
- 27:09Speaker 3: I love you too, Okay, you know it. You know
- 27:12Speaker 3: what's coming.
- 27:13Speaker 2: The hurdlers want to keep up with you. How do
- 27:14Speaker 2: they keep up with you? Give me the details.
- 27:17Speaker 1: Take all my classes on Peloton. I got family classes.
- 27:21Speaker 1: I have like boot camps, I have walks, runs, stretches, strengths,
- 27:25Speaker 1: all of that good stuff. But you can also follow
- 27:27Speaker 1: me on Instagram at Jason's Fit and also find me
- 27:29Speaker 1: on Facebook Justin's dash Peloton.
- 27:32Speaker 3: I've got to ask you.
- 27:33Speaker 2: I should have asked you this when you first mentioned
- 27:35Speaker 2: but I know the family classes are like a project,
- 27:39Speaker 2: a labor of love because of your background in teaching,
- 27:42Speaker 2: which you talk about in your episode of Hurdle I
- 27:46Speaker 2: think it was episode one twelve, So talk to me
- 27:48Speaker 2: about how that's been for you.
- 27:49Speaker 3: I'm just so curious.
- 27:51Speaker 1: It's been really amazing because it's something that we at
- 27:55Speaker 1: Peloton have been wanting to do for so long. But
- 27:57Speaker 1: of course, when everyone was stuck at home. At the
- 27:59Speaker 1: beginning of the year, it was like a little bit
- 28:01Speaker 1: more of a sense of urgency, like, let's put this
- 28:03Speaker 1: out there because kids are missing out on social time,
- 28:05Speaker 1: they were missing out on pe the education part and
- 28:08Speaker 1: the movement part. And so we launched three different classes
- 28:12Speaker 1: that I teach fit fun, which is like like modern
- 28:16Speaker 1: or easy to moderate class I would say fits Strong,
- 28:19Speaker 1: which is all body weight, by the way, is more moderate.
- 28:24Speaker 1: And then brain breaks. They're five minutes, a little wiggles.
- 28:27Speaker 1: And the thing that has surprised me the most we're
- 28:30Speaker 1: actually launching this month the third round of them already,
- 28:33Speaker 1: which is pretty wild, is that is the unique ways
- 28:38Speaker 1: that families and teachers shout out to the teachers always
- 28:42Speaker 1: have been using them with their kids and with their students.
- 28:46Speaker 1: That has been such a cool thing to watch. And
- 28:50Speaker 1: the best thing for me is when people tag me
- 28:53Speaker 1: in photos of their kids and their students saying the
- 28:56Speaker 1: little mantrac the end, they say, I am strong, I
- 28:59Speaker 1: am confident, and I'm gonna make it a really great day.
- 29:02Speaker 1: Just those mantras. I know, I live for it.
- 29:05Speaker 3: Wait, maybe I need a brain break?
- 29:08Speaker 1: You do let me Can you take the brain break?
- 29:11Speaker 1: One hundred percent if you if you want a tough one,
- 29:14Speaker 1: take what was the A tough brain break, A tough one.
- 29:18Speaker 1: This will this will have you working. Don't sleep on
- 29:21Speaker 1: the brain breaks, y'all. Don't sleep on them.
- 29:23Speaker 2: Don't sleep on them. Amazing, all right? I am over
- 29:26Speaker 2: at Emily A Baddi at Hurdle Podcast. Another hurdle conquered.
- 29:31Speaker 2: Catch you guys next time
