Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: Hello, Welcome back to another season of The Intel with
- 0:12Speaker 1: Greg Cosell.
- 0:13Speaker 2: I'm Jeff Mosher with Adam Kaplan, and of course with
- 0:16Speaker 2: us we have Greg Cosell, and we are about to
- 0:19Speaker 2: start about six to seven weeks of breakdowns. We're gonna
- 0:22Speaker 2: start with NFL free agency and these few podcasts, and
- 0:26Speaker 2: then we'll go straight to NFL Draft prospect breakdowns with Greg,
- 0:30Speaker 2: as we do every year. Now, Greg, you don't know this.
- 0:32Speaker 1: We almost traded you to another podcast platform for two
- 0:36Speaker 1: really nice microphones, but apparently something didn't check out, and
- 0:39Speaker 1: you're back with us.
- 0:43Speaker 3: So you know, I'm going to the gym and my
- 0:44Speaker 3: knee's been bothering me the last couple of times, so
- 0:47Speaker 3: I didn't know by past the physical to join you
- 0:49Speaker 3: guys today.
- 0:50Speaker 2: Well, we're glad to have you back because you're invaluable.
- 0:53Speaker 2: We shouldn't have traded you in the first place.
- 0:55Speaker 4: No good stuff.
- 0:56Speaker 2: I mean, it's been a really crazy free agent period,
- 0:59Speaker 2: not so.
- 0:59Speaker 1: Much for the E that we'll get into, but for
- 1:01Speaker 1: the NFL, and of course the Max Crosby thing threw.
- 1:04Speaker 2: A whole monkey wrench into that.
- 1:06Speaker 1: But we wanted to go and start with you getting
- 1:08Speaker 1: your breakdowns on things that happen on defense right first,
- 1:12Speaker 1: because that really impacted the Eagles. They obviously lost Jalen
- 1:15Speaker 1: Phillips to the Carolina Panthers. They added a cornerback that
- 1:19Speaker 1: will ask you about as well, but let's start with Phillips.
- 1:22Speaker 1: He is gonna, you know, second straight year the Eagles
- 1:25Speaker 1: lose their one of their top defensive guys to another team, to.
- 1:28Speaker 5: An enormous contract.
- 1:31Speaker 1: Knowing what the Panthers do, right and knowing what Jalen
- 1:34Speaker 1: Phillips is, how does he fit that scheme and what
- 1:36Speaker 1: will the Eagles be missing?
- 1:39Speaker 3: Well, you know, Jalen Phillips at his best is a
- 1:43Speaker 3: really good four to three defensive end. And that's what
- 1:47Speaker 3: Caroline is because you know, their defensive coordinator is is
- 1:51Speaker 3: still ever O, who's basically somewhat of a Vic fan
- 1:56Speaker 3: Joe Disciple. So ultimately, what they want to do is
- 1:59Speaker 3: play with four down lineman and rush with four if
- 2:02Speaker 3: they can. And now they actually have a pretty good
- 2:06Speaker 3: D line when you look at it. I mean, you know,
- 2:08Speaker 3: adding Phillips, you know, it's gonna be really interesting what
- 2:13Speaker 3: they do up front. But they have Phillips now. They
- 2:16Speaker 3: obviously added Devin Lloyd as well. The linebacker position was
- 2:20Speaker 3: probably their weakness. A year ago. Trevin Wallace was playing
- 2:25Speaker 3: pretty well and then he got hurt, and then they
- 2:26Speaker 3: were playing with Rose Boom with Cherylis. So now they
- 2:30Speaker 3: have Lloyd and assuming Wallace will be back, they have
- 2:34Speaker 3: the second year player Scouron who started to come on.
- 2:37Speaker 3: Who's an edge player, So they'll have Phillips and Scouron
- 2:39Speaker 3: on the edge. This is actually a really good defensive
- 2:43Speaker 3: front now. But for the Eagles, if you just look
- 2:46Speaker 3: at it from their perspective, we know what Vic Fangiel
- 2:49Speaker 3: wants to do. We wants to rush for and play
- 2:51Speaker 3: with seven on the back end. Right now, they do
- 2:54Speaker 3: not really have anybody on the edge. I spoke with
- 2:56Speaker 3: an Eagles coach at the combine who basically told me that,
- 3:01Speaker 3: uh that Jylex hunt and and Nolan Smith are nice players,
- 3:04Speaker 3: but they're not those guys. So you know, the Eagles
- 3:07Speaker 3: at this point, but the coaching staff does not believe
- 3:10Speaker 3: that they have an age player that is a factor.
- 3:15Speaker 4: They're not a dominant factor, and that's what they need.
- 3:17Speaker 4: You need at least every team needs at least one
- 3:19Speaker 4: guy who they know they could rely on. Who's gonna
- 3:21Speaker 4: be a factor down and down out.
- 3:23Speaker 5: But yeah, a two way guy right at him.
- 3:25Speaker 1: I mean, someone who's gonna The thing about Jalen was
- 3:27Speaker 1: that he was equally good against the run as Yeah
- 3:30Speaker 1: he's yeah.
- 3:32Speaker 4: Yeah he he he had because I know the Panthers
- 3:36Speaker 4: and and you know, they outbid the Eagles. They went
- 3:38Speaker 4: way above what they probably thought they were gonna have
- 3:40Speaker 4: to pay. But they think he's a complete player and
- 3:43Speaker 4: that's that's that's something that Carolina needs.
- 3:46Speaker 3: He is at his best. He is at his best,
- 3:48Speaker 3: you know. Yeah, it's funny how the game there's very
- 3:52Speaker 3: few guys now and we'll get into this in the
- 3:53Speaker 3: draft because there are a couple in the draft, but
- 3:55Speaker 3: there's very few you know, sort of six five, two
- 3:57Speaker 3: hundred and sixty five seventy pounds deepfensive ends because the
- 4:01Speaker 3: game has kind of changed. Yeah, you know, now a
- 4:04Speaker 3: lot more teams play with that five to two front
- 4:06Speaker 3: where you don't really where your edge player can be
- 4:08Speaker 3: two forty five, you know, I mean just look at
- 4:11Speaker 3: what the Broncos do. Who' led the league in sacks
- 4:13Speaker 3: the last two years with Cooper and Benito. You know,
- 4:16Speaker 3: guys who are not two seventy two seventy five. You know,
- 4:19Speaker 3: so Phillips is I don't want to say he's a
- 4:21Speaker 3: rare breed, but I mean there's not a lot of
- 4:23Speaker 3: those guys in the NFL now that are six five
- 4:26Speaker 3: two sixty five, two seventy and particularly if you want
- 4:29Speaker 3: to play a true four man front and not have
- 4:33Speaker 3: to blitz, you know, those guys become really really important.
- 4:38Speaker 4: So Greg's staying on the edge, right, and you're talking
- 4:40Speaker 4: about guys with size.
- 4:42Speaker 3: I live on the edge, Adam, I live on the edge.
- 4:44Speaker 4: I you, well, the Bengals, look, they spend some money.
- 4:49Speaker 4: They need to spend money. Boy, Mafey goes there. What
- 4:52Speaker 4: are your thoughts of mafe with the Bengals here?
- 4:55Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean I think you know, look what free
- 4:57Speaker 3: agency is is you're trying to prove your team, Okay,
- 5:01Speaker 3: and I hope people understand that. Forget about the money.
- 5:04Speaker 3: People say, well, it's a guy worth it. That is
- 5:06Speaker 3: totally an irrelevant statement because the salary cap goes up.
- 5:10Speaker 3: You either want a player or you don't want a player.
- 5:12Speaker 3: So if you want the player, this is what you
- 5:13Speaker 3: gotta pay. So the money, the money doesn't matter, you know,
- 5:17Speaker 3: because if you don't get the player. If you live
- 5:19Speaker 3: in Cincinnati and you know their defense hasn't been good
- 5:22Speaker 3: and they don't get players, what are fans say, Oh
- 5:24Speaker 3: my god, they didn't do anything to get players, So
- 5:27Speaker 3: then they can't You can't go ahead and get players
- 5:28Speaker 3: and then say they spend too much money. You know,
- 5:30Speaker 3: that's the cost to get the player. So you know,
- 5:33Speaker 3: my point is is that the reason I mentioned that
- 5:36Speaker 3: with my Fey is because he's a nice player. He's
- 5:39Speaker 3: not a star. But the point is is they don't
- 5:41Speaker 3: They didn't have anybody. Well, I will say this, Miles
- 5:44Speaker 3: Murphy did come on a bit last year toward the
- 5:46Speaker 3: second half of the season. They really have no idea
- 5:49Speaker 3: what they have with Shamar Stewart, who was their first
- 5:52Speaker 3: round pick in twenty twenty five, because he was hurt
- 5:54Speaker 3: a lot, so they don't really know. So they really
- 5:57Speaker 3: needed to get an edge player that at least has
- 6:00Speaker 3: experience and meaningful production in the NFL. So while Mafe
- 6:05Speaker 3: is not never going to be talked about, you know,
- 6:07Speaker 3: as a top five or six edged player in the
- 6:09Speaker 3: league right now, he is a clear upgrade for the Bengals,
- 6:13Speaker 3: and that's what they were looking to do to upgrade
- 6:15Speaker 3: a position that is a clear need because they're not
- 6:18Speaker 3: going to have Trey hendrickson right.
- 6:20Speaker 5: And then they also lost I believe Osiah Joseph.
- 6:23Speaker 3: Yeah, who is Yeeff? Who? I mean? I don't think
- 6:27Speaker 3: from from speaking to some people at the combine, I
- 6:29Speaker 3: don't think they view that as a major loss. But
- 6:32Speaker 3: the point is you still need to line up with people. See,
- 6:35Speaker 3: that's the thing sometimes I think fans forget, is you
- 6:37Speaker 3: still need to line up with people. So you've got
- 6:39Speaker 3: to You've got to put someone out there. And they're
- 6:41Speaker 3: not all going to be Miles Garrett. You know, You've
- 6:43Speaker 3: got to put people out there, right.
- 6:45Speaker 4: You know what's interesting, Jeff with Osaia Josah is going
- 6:48Speaker 4: to start for the Jets, Like he went from being
- 6:49Speaker 4: a third edge right and good backup to now he's
- 6:53Speaker 4: going to make over eleven million. Contracts always tell you
- 6:55Speaker 4: the roles. It's usually pretty self explanatory. So yeah, uh,
- 7:00Speaker 4: Mafay's is an upside guy explosive. But I found it
- 7:04Speaker 4: interesting that the Seahawks didn't extend his contract.
- 7:06Speaker 3: Yeah, I agree, that's interesting.
- 7:08Speaker 1: Now they did have to get they got to give
- 7:10Speaker 1: money to Witherspoon, they got to give money to.
- 7:13Speaker 5: Jackson Smith and Jigba.
- 7:14Speaker 1: They'll probably have to do something with sam Donold's contract now.
- 7:18Speaker 3: That that's good. A factor too is you know, teams
- 7:21Speaker 3: look ahead to see what's upcoming. I mean, there's no
- 7:24Speaker 3: question Smith and Jigba is going to be the highest
- 7:26Speaker 3: paid receiver in the league. When when you know, so
- 7:29Speaker 3: you know they know what's up, what's coming. And and
- 7:33Speaker 3: also when you have a defensive head coach and Mike McDonald,
- 7:36Speaker 3: who obviously is very very good, I'm sure he believes,
- 7:41Speaker 3: as he should, that he can scheme up some things
- 7:44Speaker 3: and that, Yeah, does he want a great edge rusher,
- 7:45Speaker 3: of course people always want that, but I'm sure he
- 7:48Speaker 3: believes that he can do some scheming and that he
- 7:51Speaker 3: doesn't need to have he doesn't need to pay Mafey
- 7:55Speaker 3: you know, X amount of dollars because he probably feels
- 7:58Speaker 3: he can get another Mafay. Yeah.
- 7:59Speaker 5: Also a very strong, stronger than an average draft I
- 8:02Speaker 5: believe this year for the edge rushers, So those should
- 8:04Speaker 5: probably be some good ones.
- 8:06Speaker 3: Yeah, it's pretty good in that, you know, And we'll
- 8:09Speaker 3: start talking about the draft, you know, next week. But
- 8:11Speaker 3: you know, one thing I'm really coming to believe as
- 8:14Speaker 3: I watch, you know, I've been grinding watching players and
- 8:17Speaker 3: there's just too many. I'm doing the best I can,
- 8:19Speaker 3: but you know, because you know, I will not take
- 8:20Speaker 3: any shortcuts when I do this. But is so much
- 8:24Speaker 3: as I had great conversations with the Combine, and so
- 8:28Speaker 3: much is dependent upon team and scheme, you know, because
- 8:33Speaker 3: you know it's like receiver. This year, there's no Jamar
- 8:35Speaker 3: Chase in this draft, but three or four receivers will
- 8:38Speaker 3: be drafted in the first round and maybe five, So
- 8:41Speaker 3: their first round players, you know, but they're not Jamar Chase.
- 8:45Speaker 3: They're not justin Jefferson. They're not at that level of
- 8:48Speaker 3: prospect or player. But so much then depends on where
- 8:53Speaker 3: they go and how they're deployed, you know, and and
- 8:56Speaker 3: and they could you know, some of these guys could
- 8:58Speaker 3: go somewhere and catch eighty five and people say, wow,
- 9:01Speaker 3: he's a great player. You know, that's that's the way
- 9:04Speaker 3: so much of this works. But when you evaluate a player,
- 9:07Speaker 3: you're evaluating him, you know, more as trades and attributes
- 9:11Speaker 3: as opposed to, well, if he goes to the Rams,
- 9:13Speaker 3: he'll catch ninety balls. You know, you're not thinking that
- 9:16Speaker 3: way when you evaluate them great.
- 9:19Speaker 5: Let's let's stay within the division on edge.
- 9:21Speaker 1: As I brought up, both the Cowboys and the Commanders
- 9:24Speaker 1: made him move. The Cowboys trade for Rashawn Gary. I
- 9:27Speaker 1: believe they give up a fourth round pick. I thought
- 9:29Speaker 1: that was a little pricey, but he's a he's a
- 9:31Speaker 1: proven pass rusher in this league. And then the Commanders
- 9:35Speaker 1: pay a pretty fine price there for odafe Oway, who
- 9:38Speaker 1: struggled earlier in his career and really seem to come
- 9:41Speaker 1: come along the last year year or two. So let's
- 9:44Speaker 1: let's talk about both of those, yeah, additions, and which
- 9:47Speaker 1: one you think is more impactful.
- 9:48Speaker 3: And well, the Cowboys obviously needed an age player, so again,
- 9:52Speaker 3: you know, you made the point that there are some
- 9:54Speaker 3: some edge players in this draft, but they're not likely
- 9:57Speaker 3: to get someone as good as Gary in the fourth round.
- 10:00Speaker 3: You know, again, I don't work for a team, and
- 10:01Speaker 3: I know teams hoard their draft picks. That's sort of
- 10:03Speaker 3: the unwritten code in the NFL that draft picks. You know,
- 10:07Speaker 3: it's like gold, you know, but they're not going to
- 10:09Speaker 3: get a player as good as Gary in the fourth round.
- 10:12Speaker 3: So he's a quality NFL defensive end and a quality
- 10:17Speaker 3: pass rusher. And they needed that, so you can argue
- 10:21Speaker 3: it's a good trade. You know, it's a position of
- 10:23Speaker 3: need and they're not going to get that guy in
- 10:25Speaker 3: the draft in the fourth round, so it's a good
- 10:28Speaker 3: move for the Cowboys. Oway is a really interesting player
- 10:32Speaker 3: because as you know, you know, he's a Penn State guy,
- 10:35Speaker 3: as you well know Jeff who did not have a
- 10:38Speaker 3: lot of production either in college or his first few
- 10:41Speaker 3: years in the league, and it didn't match his trades,
- 10:45Speaker 3: which are off the charts as far as pure athleticism
- 10:48Speaker 3: as you know, I mean, this guy's kind of an
- 10:50Speaker 3: athletic freak. But then all of a sudden last year
- 10:53Speaker 3: it started to come together and I believe he had
- 10:55Speaker 3: double digit sacks last year with the Chargers. So you know,
- 10:58Speaker 3: you're dealing with a guy that, in an ideal world,
- 11:03Speaker 3: if he continues to get better, you're dealing with a
- 11:05Speaker 3: guy that is a really strong edge pass rusher. I mean,
- 11:09Speaker 3: the traits suggests that he could be a thirteen fourteen
- 11:12Speaker 3: to fifteen SAC guy. I mean, those are the kinds
- 11:14Speaker 3: of traits that he has, so you know, and I'm
- 11:17Speaker 3: sure the Commanders are looking at him and thinking, well,
- 11:20Speaker 3: that's the trend for him. You know, he's not an
- 11:22Speaker 3: old player, so you know, you know, they also just
- 11:26Speaker 3: sign Leo Chanal, who's a really intriguing player because he
- 11:31Speaker 3: can do a lot of different things for you. He
- 11:33Speaker 3: can line up on the ball, he can line up
- 11:35Speaker 3: off the ball. At Wisconsin, he was used primarily as
- 11:38Speaker 3: a pass rusher, so he can rush the quarterback, but
- 11:41Speaker 3: the Chiefs used him in multiple ways. He also could
- 11:44Speaker 3: could defend playing his own coverage. He's one of those,
- 11:47Speaker 3: you know, to use the cliched term now that's out there,
- 11:51Speaker 3: one of those positionless type players that defenses have now become.
- 11:56Speaker 3: You know, they're using and deploying more and more in
- 11:58Speaker 3: different ways. But way, you know, if the trend continues,
- 12:02Speaker 3: I mean, he's he's a pretty interesting player on the edge.
- 12:05Speaker 4: Greg want to get back to Rashan Garrett. Did you
- 12:07Speaker 4: notice on his tape with Green Bay they line him
- 12:09Speaker 4: up in different spots?
- 12:11Speaker 3: Uh? Rarely. I mean he wasn't technically a move. He
- 12:14Speaker 3: wasn't like he was Micah Parsons. You know, he predominantly
- 12:18Speaker 3: played left defensive end. Okay, you know, I don't have
- 12:21Speaker 3: the numbers right in front of me, but he was
- 12:23Speaker 3: not necessarily a move guy, gotcha, And that was in
- 12:26Speaker 3: Jeff Haffleys. See there's another example that's Jeff Haffley's defense.
- 12:29Speaker 3: Now he goes to Dallas because he's got that kind
- 12:33Speaker 3: of skill set, because he's a good athlete, they could
- 12:35Speaker 3: move him around. You know, these are the things we
- 12:37Speaker 3: don't know how he'll be deployed in.
- 12:39Speaker 4: He's a big dude, like he's got rare side for edge,
- 12:42Speaker 4: and he's athletic.
- 12:44Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 12:45Speaker 1: Yeah, well that's what's really interesting about we're talking about
- 12:48Speaker 1: the Commanders and the Cowboys. They both have new defensive
- 12:50Speaker 1: coordinators from way different sort of backgrounds in Trees. So
- 12:55Speaker 1: it'll be interesting to see if Dallas's defense looks a
- 12:58Speaker 1: lot like Vic Fangio's Hereladelphia because Christian Parker, and then
- 13:02Speaker 1: in Washington you add Oway and you're you're mentioning Greg
- 13:06Speaker 1: that the Commanders don't have a ton of like a
- 13:09Speaker 1: level pass rushers, but now hire Derante Jones from the
- 13:12Speaker 1: Brian Flora school. They do have multiple guys who can
- 13:16Speaker 1: like line up all around, like now and Oway and
- 13:20Speaker 1: Dietrich Wise and probably you know, uh, Chanelle, like you
- 13:23Speaker 1: were mentioning probably kind of confused quarterbacks of what they're
- 13:26Speaker 1: going to do schematically.
- 13:27Speaker 3: You made, Jeff, you just made a great point because
- 13:30Speaker 3: you know the floor is school with Chanelle and Frankie Louvu.
- 13:35Speaker 3: I mean, you have two guys that can really do
- 13:38Speaker 3: you know, move all around and and sort of fit
- 13:41Speaker 3: that that positionless mold that that I assume Jones is
- 13:45Speaker 3: probably going to you know, deploy somewhere along the line
- 13:48Speaker 3: given his background. So that was a great point that
- 13:51Speaker 3: you made because again now it comes down to, you know,
- 13:54Speaker 3: the coach how he wants to deploy deploy players. That's
- 13:57Speaker 3: why someone like Chanell and again I have no idea
- 14:00Speaker 3: what they paid. I don't care. Maybe they paid more
- 14:02Speaker 3: than someone else wanted to pay. But he fits that
- 14:05Speaker 3: kind of scheme because he's one of those guys that
- 14:08Speaker 3: you know, I don't want to sit here and say
- 14:10Speaker 3: he's exactly Andrew van Ginkel, but he's kind of in
- 14:13Speaker 3: that mold, you know, the way he can be deployed
- 14:16Speaker 3: in a defense.
- 14:17Speaker 4: Sure interesting, you know, Jeff, this this division now with
- 14:22Speaker 4: the coaching changes and schematic change. You look at the
- 14:24Speaker 4: Giants by the way, you know they're going to change up.
- 14:28Speaker 4: It's kind of it's it's interesting you know, I think
- 14:32Speaker 4: this coun look a little different this year.
- 14:33Speaker 3: You know, it's funny we're talking on obviously, you know,
- 14:37Speaker 3: early to mid March, and it's a great time of
- 14:40Speaker 3: year because of all the signings and and and you know,
- 14:42Speaker 3: and obviously the great thing about the NFL is it's
- 14:45Speaker 3: it's really twenty four to seven three sixty five because
- 14:47Speaker 3: you know, with the combine with free agency, the drafts
- 14:51Speaker 3: coming up, then the schedule comes out. I mean, it's
- 14:53Speaker 3: it's phenomenal, but it's so hard to know exactly how
- 14:56Speaker 3: all this stuff's going to play out. It's just so
- 14:58Speaker 3: much fun to talk about it is it is.
- 15:01Speaker 1: And you know, sticking with the theme of being in
- 15:03Speaker 1: the division, Greg and another new defensive coordinator who also
- 15:07Speaker 1: again comes from the Eagles tree. The Giants now have
- 15:10Speaker 1: Denard Wilson and they make a big signing of Tremaine Edmunds.
- 15:14Speaker 1: We already know the Giants have a very good front
- 15:16Speaker 1: four with Burns and Lawrence and Abdul Carter, and now
- 15:19Speaker 1: they add Tremaine Edmunds. What did you see from him
- 15:23Speaker 1: on tape last year? I know he was banged up
- 15:25Speaker 1: a little bit, but can he still play?
- 15:27Speaker 3: I'm going to tell you just what the tape showed. Okay,
- 15:29Speaker 3: you know that's what I do. Beyond I don't think
- 15:31Speaker 3: Tremaine Edmunds is a very good player. And the Bears
- 15:36Speaker 3: had no problem letting him go, zero problem letting him go. So,
- 15:41Speaker 3: you know, for a guy his size, he's not very physical,
- 15:44Speaker 3: he's not very good in his own coverage, he's not
- 15:46Speaker 3: a very good blitzer. I think the tape shows that
- 15:50Speaker 3: he's not a very good player. Now, you know, again
- 15:53Speaker 3: it's a case where they you know, they don't have
- 15:57Speaker 3: a Carica anymore. I don't know did he sign anywhere? Yeah,
- 16:02Speaker 3: but he obviously he's a free agent right at him.
- 16:05Speaker 4: Yeah he was released.
- 16:06Speaker 3: Yeah, he was released. Okay, So I mean they need linebackers,
- 16:10Speaker 3: and you know this is what free agency is. You
- 16:12Speaker 3: sign guys that are available. But you know, I'm just
- 16:16Speaker 3: telling you what the tape shows. I don't think Tremaine
- 16:18Speaker 3: Edmunds is a very good player at this point in
- 16:20Speaker 3: his career.
- 16:22Speaker 4: Greg, there are a bunch of them and this one,
- 16:26Speaker 4: and they're paying Trent McDuffie the Rams over thirty mine
- 16:29Speaker 4: per season. What are your thoughts of Trent McDuffie Now
- 16:32Speaker 4: with the Rams.
- 16:33Speaker 3: Well, the Rams decided that they wanted the chief secondary apparently. Yeah,
- 16:37Speaker 3: it's right. Jalen Watson too, Yeah, yeah, I mean those
- 16:40Speaker 3: are going to be. You know, there are two, there
- 16:42Speaker 3: are two outside corners. I would assume, you know, McDuffie's
- 16:46Speaker 3: another one of those guys. He can line up anywhere,
- 16:48Speaker 3: you know, inside or outside, and I'm sure in certain
- 16:51Speaker 3: packages that's what they'll do. Because Raheem Morris is you know,
- 16:54Speaker 3: he he has a lot of background with different kinds
- 16:59Speaker 3: of ski teams. So you know, it's it's it's easy
- 17:03Speaker 3: to say, well, this is what they're going to be.
- 17:04Speaker 3: I mean, I think they'll they'll they'll be, they'll they'll
- 17:08Speaker 3: have a foundation, but I think they'll do a lot
- 17:10Speaker 3: of different things. But I think McDuffie and Watson will
- 17:14Speaker 3: be their outside corners. You know, what do we talk
- 17:17Speaker 3: about last year numerous times, guys, what was the weakness
- 17:20Speaker 3: of the Rams on defour and and by the way
- 17:24Speaker 3: that showed up in critical moments that they knew that.
- 17:27Speaker 3: I mean, it's you know, if I know what they
- 17:29Speaker 3: know it, believe me, you know. So so they went
- 17:32Speaker 3: out and they addressed it, and they got McDuffie who's
- 17:34Speaker 3: a McDuffie is a swagger guy too. I mean he's
- 17:37Speaker 3: one of those guys that you know you want on
- 17:39Speaker 3: your team in your locker room. Watson has been a
- 17:42Speaker 3: solid starter for the Chiefs. So now they've got their
- 17:45Speaker 3: their corners because and the reason I think McDuffie will
- 17:48Speaker 3: predominantly play in the outside is because Clinton Lake's a
- 17:50Speaker 3: good football player and they and I think they, if
- 17:53Speaker 3: I'm not mistaken, Adam years they signed him.
- 17:57Speaker 4: The tract they broke, got cam curlback, I've got camp kitchens.
- 18:02Speaker 4: This is they're loaded. Now.
- 18:04Speaker 5: Hey, I know a lot of you out there are
- 18:06Speaker 5: just like me.

- 18:09Speaker 1: a back to work policy and you're always out of
- 18:11Speaker 1: the house.

- 20:00Speaker 1: and healthcare pros. Cam did Apothecary, top quality cannabis, great prices,
- 20:05Speaker 1: and an experience made for Philly fans twenty one and
- 20:08Speaker 1: up right.
- 20:09Speaker 3: I told you about three four years ago that Cam
- 20:11Speaker 3: Crow was a good football player.
- 20:12Speaker 4: Yes, yeah, no, Greg, They've gone from a really shaky
- 20:17Speaker 4: quarterback group to now deeper and then you just we
- 20:22Speaker 4: just talked about the guys that they've added, Quinton Lake
- 20:24Speaker 4: and the way that they move him.
- 20:26Speaker 3: Yeah, this is they got a really good defense now,
- 20:29Speaker 3: you know, even on the back end, because you know,
- 20:32Speaker 3: Curl is a good player, Kitchens is solid. They played
- 20:35Speaker 3: I don't know if Marris will play as much dime
- 20:37Speaker 3: as Shula did, but Jalen McCullough was a really good
- 20:40Speaker 3: dime safety, you know, so you know this is this
- 20:44Speaker 3: is interesting.
- 20:46Speaker 4: MORBs, is there still still there?
- 20:48Speaker 3: Yeah? I do. I don't know if he'll be there
- 20:50Speaker 3: when it all starts, I hear.
- 20:51Speaker 1: But hey, you know one thing they did greg is
- 20:55Speaker 1: they made they did no favors to the Eagles by
- 20:57Speaker 1: giving McDuffie that kind of a contract, because at this
- 21:00Speaker 1: time next year, not only will the Eagles have to
- 21:02Speaker 1: pay Quinyon Mitchell if they want to extend his contract
- 21:05Speaker 1: something north of thirty million a year because of the
- 21:09Speaker 1: way that McDuffie has been used in the way that
- 21:11Speaker 1: the Eagles.
- 21:11Speaker 5: Use Cooper to Gene.
- 21:12Speaker 1: If Cooper to Jen has anything like a year three,
- 21:16Speaker 1: like one and two, he's now a thirty million or
- 21:19Speaker 1: in that neighborhood a year corner. Because I know McDuffie's
- 21:22Speaker 1: played more outside than Coop, but the way things have
- 21:25Speaker 1: been trending, Coop might play more outside this year, so
- 21:28Speaker 1: he was I mean.
- 21:30Speaker 3: It seems as if this might be Vic Fango's last season,
- 21:33Speaker 3: assuming the defense is still good. I would assume that
- 21:37Speaker 3: someone from that staff would end up being the DC
- 21:39Speaker 3: and they'd stay with the Fangiol model. Oh yeah, So
- 21:42Speaker 3: if that's the case, I mean, I can tell you
- 21:45Speaker 3: from talking to Eagles coaches that they viewed the Gene
- 21:48Speaker 3: as God. I mean, he is a really important important player.
- 21:54Speaker 3: So that's one reason, Jeff. Another great point you just
- 21:58Speaker 3: made is That's one reason why they probably couldn't be
- 22:00Speaker 3: super active in spending a lot of money in free
- 22:03Speaker 3: agency because they know, you know, they just paid Davis.
- 22:07Speaker 3: They're going to have to pay the Gene. Mitchell's going
- 22:09Speaker 3: to get top cornerback money maybe number one cornerback money.
- 22:14Speaker 3: And you know it raised on the question and we
- 22:17Speaker 3: can discuss this, you know, when we do the Patreon group.
- 22:19Speaker 3: I'm sure they want to discuss it. You know, is
- 22:23Speaker 3: Jalen Carter going to be here? I mean, you can't
- 22:25Speaker 3: pay everybody. You can't pay everybody. How he actually set
- 22:28Speaker 3: the combine, You just can't. But since you brought up
- 22:31Speaker 3: the Eagles, let's go to it. They're signing only for
- 22:33Speaker 3: one season? Is the animatic that surprise you guys that
- 22:39Speaker 3: made a multi year deal?
- 22:40Speaker 4: He's it's interesting with treequall and Greg will give us
- 22:44Speaker 4: what it's takee looked like, so he was very available
- 22:47Speaker 4: to trade deadline. Enigmatic means sort of mysterious because you know,
- 22:52Speaker 4: this guy's talented. I was talking to a receivers coach
- 22:55Speaker 4: that I really respect the other day and his team
- 22:58Speaker 4: over the course of the season went against them and
- 23:00Speaker 4: they targeted woln not so much Josh Job, which is
- 23:03Speaker 4: kind of funny. He goes we like, we thought Joe
- 23:05Speaker 4: was an improved player. There were things you could do
- 23:07Speaker 4: against Joe, but Woolen, from their tapes set of Gregg
- 23:12Speaker 4: and You'll let us down a second, they saw things
- 23:14Speaker 4: where he'd go for certain throws and he fall step,
- 23:19Speaker 4: make a mistake. So what did the tape show about
- 23:21Speaker 4: the trique Wollen.
- 23:22Speaker 3: Woolen is a rare individual because there's not many six four,
- 23:25Speaker 3: two hundred and fifteen pound corners that move like that.
- 23:29Speaker 3: And don't forget he started his first two years in
- 23:31Speaker 3: college he was a wide receiver and then he became
- 23:34Speaker 3: a corner. So he's a rare guy in terms of size, speed,
- 23:40Speaker 3: athletic traits. But he has major technique, fundamental and concentration
- 23:46Speaker 3: issues and they just haven't really gone away. And he
- 23:50Speaker 3: basically got beaten out by Job, although there wore games
- 23:53Speaker 3: down the stretch in which Wollan played more snaps than Job,
- 23:56Speaker 3: but he essentially got beaten out because they just resigned
- 23:59Speaker 3: Job and we're letting Woolen walk. So so this the
- 24:03Speaker 3: Seattle coaching staff made a decision that Joe was a
- 24:06Speaker 3: better player. So one if you can get it out
- 24:10Speaker 3: of them, guys. I mean it's all there, It's all there.
- 24:14Speaker 3: I mean, there's no one like him at corner in
- 24:17Speaker 3: the league. There's no one like him at six four
- 24:19Speaker 3: two fifteen with those kinds of athletic and physical traits.
- 24:24Speaker 3: So you know, now, can you get it out of him?
- 24:28Speaker 3: There's nothing more needs to be said. If you can. Boy,
- 24:31Speaker 3: do they have a good corner group with Woan, Mitchell
- 24:34Speaker 3: and Djene. I mean, if you can't, then you're just
- 24:37Speaker 3: going to be frustrated all the year.
- 24:39Speaker 4: Jeff's size on the outside, Oh my god, Mitchell, I
- 24:42Speaker 4: mean that that's important. I know we talked about this
- 24:45Speaker 4: with Vic when it came in, and just everyone else
- 24:48Speaker 4: wasn't so it wasn't very important that they have size.
- 24:50Speaker 4: But it's great. You look, you'd rather have it and
- 24:52Speaker 4: not have it, and that's a good thing.
- 24:54Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 24:55Speaker 1: Did you ask us Greg if we were surprised he
- 24:57Speaker 1: didn't get a multi year deal?
- 24:58Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 24:58Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I mean he was, he was benched.
- 25:03Speaker 5: Oh no, I'm not surprised at all.
- 25:06Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 25:07Speaker 1: I think it's a proven kind of signing, and you know,
- 25:11Speaker 1: we've seen these kind of signing signings a lot before.
- 25:13Speaker 1: And they tend to go the unfavorable way as opposed
- 25:16Speaker 1: to the favorable Forever Zach Bond, you get more the
- 25:20Speaker 1: the the who's the linebacker, the Devin Whites of the world,
- 25:23Speaker 1: or the Josh Chas who did a nice job, but
- 25:26Speaker 1: you know he was he's I actually predicted you were
- 25:28Speaker 1: going to say about Woolen what you said about that.
- 25:32Speaker 5: There's something in there.
- 25:34Speaker 3: Oh my god, because the traits.
- 25:36Speaker 1: Are there, but I think playing that position requires a
- 25:39Speaker 1: lot just why would we see it said this about
- 25:41Speaker 1: kieler Ringo. Traits are important, but you got you can't
- 25:45Speaker 1: have mental lapses. You gotta be able to and and I'm.
- 25:48Speaker 3: Sure a lot of people in Philly are thinking, well,
- 25:50Speaker 3: if Mike McDonald couldn't get it out of him, then.
- 25:52Speaker 5: That was one of my thoughts.
- 25:54Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, and that's a valid thought, you know. Yeah,
- 25:57Speaker 3: But so we'll see. I mean, the bottom line is
- 26:00Speaker 3: Eagles needed a corner opposite onee. The question is now
- 26:03Speaker 3: will they still draft one? You know, and that becomes
- 26:05Speaker 3: the question, you know, so you know, obviously we still
- 26:08Speaker 3: have the draft to go, so we'll see.
- 26:11Speaker 1: Absolutely all right, that has been a good look at
- 26:14Speaker 1: the major free agent signings on defense across the NFL
- 26:18Speaker 1: and the first wave, and of course the Eagles as well.
- 26:21Speaker 1: In the next part two of this, we'll talk about.
- 26:23Speaker 5: The offensive signings in the NFL.
- 26:25Speaker 1: That's going to do it for this episode of The
- 26:27Speaker 1: Intel with Greg Cosel for Greg co Sell and Adam Kaplan.
- 26:30Speaker 1: I'm Jeff Mosher catch all on the next one.
