- 0:00Power #2 Miller and Condon welcome back.
- 0:02See Iowa Sports Radio Network Matt Rudy Golf Die just formally
- 0:06covered golf major events for over 3 decades.
- 0:10He'll join us to help us with the Open Championship that gets
- 0:13underway in about 11 hours. Off to Chicago we go.
- 0:16Well, actually not to Chicago. We go to Lake Winnebago.
- 0:22What's up? What are you doing, Cap?
- 0:25Are you fishing? You're at you're in the middle
- 0:27of Lake Winnebago. I'm looking at it on Wikipedia
- 0:30media. Average depth 15 1/2 feet deep.
- 0:33You can find walleye, you can find muskie, bluegill, bass.
- 0:38Got a little bit of everything. What are you doing?
- 0:41Floating on my pontoon boat, I take the week of the All Star
- 0:45break off. The only broadcast thing I do is
- 0:48for you and that is it. I'm on my pontoon with a bunch
- 0:54of buddies and we're good. One of my friends is here.
- 0:58He's the lead guitarist on American Idol.
- 1:00I got a whole bunch of other guys here, girl, that works for
- 1:04us, and we're just having a good old time.
- 1:07This is our one week where we totally disconnect and then
- 1:12rock'n'roll. We had the All Star game on last
- 1:14night. I mean, I'll never get away from
- 1:15sports, right? The weather, Karen, we get rain
- 1:19this afternoon, but right now, dude, if it this isn't heaven is
- 1:24there, it can't be much better. Yeah, you can't be summer on the
- 1:28lake, no doubt about it. Cap event.
- 1:30I'm envious of you. Well, let's talk about baseball.
- 1:32Let's talk about the Cubs as they make their way back to
- 1:35Wrigley Field for the red, the red hot Red Sox come to town on
- 1:39Friday. God, what do you make about Kyle
- 1:41Tucker's answer to the Chicago Sun times when he was asked if
- 1:44he could see himself resigning so well.
- 1:46Yeah, why not? Is that encouraging?
- 1:49Is that is that player speak, he's going to have plenty of
- 1:52opportunities. And then to dovetail on that
- 1:55question, does the emergence of PCA in any way make it unlikely
- 2:01or less likely the Tucker that that big payday is coming from
- 2:06the Cubs? So how about those two kind of
- 2:08combined? I don't think they're even
- 2:11related. You've got PCA for five more
- 2:13years, right? So I don't believe that PCA's
- 2:18emergence has anything to do with the Kyle Tucker situation.
- 2:22I've told you guys consistently, I believe Kyle Tuckers resigning
- 2:26with the Cubs. I also don't do not believe he's
- 2:29getting anywhere close to the 600 million that all these Jim
- 2:34Boden and whoever is all speculate.
- 2:37I don't believe it. I may be proven wrong, and if I
- 2:40am, I'll be the first guy to admit I was wrong.
- 2:42But if you go back last year, Juan Soto was leaving.
- 2:52The pontoon got him. Your best player.
- 2:55We don't have that here. The Saint Louis Cardinals are
- 2:57not giving Kyle Tucker $600 million as a middle finger to
- 3:01the Chicago Cubs. Same with the White Sox.
- 3:03Jerry Reins or is not green lighting 600 million.
- 3:07That's you look at the teams that would truly spend that
- 3:12amount of money. Who is it?
- 3:15The Dodgers You're going to, You're telling me they're going
- 3:17to add another $600 million deal?
- 3:20I don't believe that. You're telling me that with a
- 3:24work stoppage coming up, things are very, very leery of adding
- 3:29major payroll because they don't know what the rules are going to
- 3:32be. OK, So factor all that in.
- 3:36I'll bet you Kyle Tucker gets in the Force.
- 3:39Yeah, not crazy. Could there be, could there be
- 3:42options that Kyle Tucker gets, let's call it 10 years at
- 3:4742,000,000 a year and another option year that vests if he
- 3:52does extraordinary things, wins the MVP in year 10 and he gets
- 3:56another 55,000,000 so that the agent could sell?
- 4:01Hey, we're over 500. Yeah, that could happen.
- 4:04But the guaranteed portion, I will bet you, is not north of
- 4:09$500 million. Maybe I'll be wrong, But I do
- 4:12think the Cubs are resigning it. I do.
- 4:14I believe that I will get it done.
- 4:16And he's a really good player. He's a really good guy.
- 4:19He's loved in that room and I don't think it has anything to
- 4:23do with the emergence of PCA, who I do think the Cubs are
- 4:26going to try and get a long term deal.
- 4:29You're never going to get him to sign a 10 year deal.
- 4:31So he's a free agent at 33. But I do think you can
- 4:35absolutely get a deal done with PCA where you buy out the first
- 4:40two years of free agency. He's 23, so if you do a
- 4:42seven-year deal, you buy out two years of free agency.
- 4:46The rest of his rookie contract slash arbitration years, let's
- 4:52call it he gets A150175. They tried to steal him in April
- 4:58at 75,000,000 and not even all guaranteed and they couldn't get
- 5:02it done because he was smart his age.
- 5:03He goes, we're not taking that. And then he exploded into an All
- 5:07Star starter. So you're going to have to pay
- 5:10him. If you're going to get him on a
- 5:1210 year deal, it's going to have to be a Bobby Witt deal at close
- 5:15to 300 million. And I don't think the Cubs are
- 5:17doing that. Cap, you like to play shot or no
- 5:20shot, so let's play that with third baseman on the trade
- 5:24market. I got a list of five here for
- 5:26you. Let's start with the, I believe
- 5:28probably the longest shot because of the team he plays
- 5:30for, Nolan Arenado. That's a no shot.
- 5:34First of all, he's starting to slow down physically good
- 5:41player. Still a good.
- 5:42Player, but I do not believe there's any shots, so I'll say
- 5:46no shot. Arenado.
- 5:47Plus, the Cardinals don't want to help the Cubs.
- 5:49Yeah, absolutely. And I think that's a main reason
- 5:51for it, too. Let's stay in the division with
- 5:53Co Brian Hayes. I'll say no shot because I don't
- 5:58think he's much of an upgrade and why would I want to put a
- 6:01guy there who's not an upgrade over what I think I have in Matt
- 6:05Shaw eventually? The very affordable Ryan McMahon
- 6:09from the Rockies. I guess that's a shot, but he
- 6:14still has another year at least left at 17,000,000.
- 6:17So I'm not sure that I want to see the Cubs commit those types
- 6:22of dollars. One thing Jed's done, I mean, a
- 6:24tremendous job at is he's got very clean books.
- 6:30You look at what he's got locked up beyond the 26th season when
- 6:34the lockout may happen or the strike he's got, Dansby, name me
- 6:38another massive contract he has on his books today.
- 6:41He doesn't. So yeah, I do not think there's
- 6:46an appetite for Ryan McMahon, but he's a better player than
- 6:49what we've got there today. So I'll say potential shot, but
- 6:54probably no shot. All right, let's finish up big
- 6:57game hunting here. Let's go to Suarez and the
- 6:59Diamondbacks with his 28 home runs.
- 7:02Absolute shot. I think the Diamondbacks, you
- 7:06might be able to tell me what hit what.
- 7:08Where are they in the wild card race right now?
- 7:10Because they're not going to win the division.
- 7:11Four and a. Half, yeah, I think it's 4 1/2.
- 7:14OK, so. But a bunch of teams to
- 7:16leapfrog. A bunch, but right now we are
- 7:20at, let's see, today is what, the 16th?
- 7:2316th Yep. You got two weeks from tomorrow
- 7:27is the deadline. Now, if you tell me the
- 7:29Diamondbacks go 7 and one, the next 8, they're probably not
- 7:33selling. You tell me the Diamondbacks go
- 7:353 and 4, four and three, and they're still 4 1/2, five and a
- 7:39half back. They are absolutely selling.
- 7:42And I think that I could absolutely mark the tape.
- 7:46Maybe we can play it again. I could see Jed making a pretty
- 7:50substantial deal. Give me a reliever, give me
- 7:54Merrill Kelly, who can start Game 2 for me behind him and not
- 7:57a, and give me Suarez and I'll give you Owen, Casey, Kevin, Al
- 8:01Contra. I think the only player in his
- 8:04system that he doesn't want to move unless the deal is just too
- 8:08good to pass up is Jackson Wiggins.
- 8:10Who's up pitcher? Yeah, interesting.
- 8:13They're 5 1/2 out. By 5 1/2 out for the
- 8:15Diamondbacks final one. OK, Jose Ramirez, is there any
- 8:19shot he signed a a very cut down deal to stay in Cleveland?
- 8:23He's got a full no trade any shot at all for Ramirez.
- 8:27No, because he wouldn't have taken that deal if they were
- 8:30going to trade him. He loves it there.
- 8:33He took a hometown deal, which a lot of people think, why would
- 8:36you do that? Because.
- 8:38Not every guy is shallow where it's got to be.
- 8:41I got to have the the best and highest offer.
- 8:46Well, I remember, remember Dale Brown, the coach at LSU, Brown
- 8:51walked into a player's house and the player said, well, and this
- 8:55was before you could pay. Nili got $250,000 from this
- 9:00school. I don't really want to go there,
- 9:02but I got to take the money and Dale literally put another
- 9:06dollar out and said, OK, there's 250,000 and $1.00.
- 9:09You want to come with us now? He's like, how shallow are you?
- 9:12Go where you feel like you're being treated fairly and it's
- 9:15the right situation. And he ended up getting the kid
- 9:18and did I, do I think he cheated?
- 9:20Maybe, I don't know. Went on a lot when I was
- 9:22coaching. I had to deal with that.
- 9:24But my point is, like, are you all about the last dollar?
- 9:28Like if you're a Cub and you play there and you like it there
- 9:32and your wife likes it there and it's a great summer city and
- 9:35you're beloved, then explain to me if the Cubs offer you, let's
- 9:39call it 450 million for 10 years and someone offers you
- 9:43475,000,000 for 10 years. Well, after the 25, you got to
- 9:48pay your agent, you got to pay your taxes, you got to pay your
- 9:51union dues. What are we really left with it?
- 9:54You're going to blow up your life over $11 million really
- 9:59when you're getting 400 and some from the other team.
- 10:01That's my point. I think if you're happy and
- 10:04you're being treated fairly, look at the Cubs, offer him 160
- 10:08and someone's at 4:20, he's gone.
- 10:11But if it's close, I think he's coming back.
- 10:14Kappa, you said the word beloved.
- 10:15I'll use that when it comes to Ryan Sandberg, because that's
- 10:18what he is. The Cubs fans, he put out an
- 10:20update on his health. It was really he didn't a lot to
- 10:24it other than the fact he hasn't been able to get back to
- 10:26Wrigley. He's been watching every game,
- 10:28those type of things. Do you have any update on on how
- 10:32they how his battle is going Cap?
- 10:35I do not, other than somebody close to him said to me, look,
- 10:38that chemo is just as people who deal with it, either themselves
- 10:43or in their family. It's brutal.
- 10:45And he's had, you know, a battle and it's the second go round for
- 10:50him going through his cancer battle.
- 10:52So I just asked everyone to pray for him because he's the best
- 10:55guy in the world. Let's talk about other positions
- 10:59other than third base. I mean, we know that they you
- 11:01want back of the bullpen, you want a #2 starter.
- 11:03Those are all absolute must I think for a team that's very
- 11:08much in contention. How about a couple of names,
- 11:10Cap? Are you hearing anything other
- 11:12than the, you know, the names that trend throughout there?
- 11:15Are they close to anybody or kicking the tires do you think?
- 11:18Seth Lugo But the Royals have to admit that they're not going to
- 11:22win the World Series. And so, you know, the one thing
- 11:24that's kind of the untold story is there are owners going.
- 11:28We got to bankroll as much cash as we can before this impending
- 11:33labor stoppage. Well, if you're a Royals fan,
- 11:36you're like a team's hanging in there.
- 11:37Let's buy tickets tonight. They just traded Seth Lugo.
- 11:41They just traded who They're not trading Bobby with, but they
- 11:44traded Estevez. They're closer.
- 11:45They traded this guy. They traded.
- 11:47Why are you buying tickets? Because they're waving the white
- 11:49flag. They're.
- 11:50Going to throw basement Garcia, who's really good by the way, I
- 11:53don't know what. His Michael Garcia is a very
- 11:55good player, a very good player. So, you know, look, I advise
- 11:59people because I'll have friends of mine who will text me or
- 12:02listeners that'll tweet at me. Well, can't we go get that guy?
- 12:06Well, he makes no money. So like Edward Cabrera, who the
- 12:11Cubs like a lot, they tried to get him over the winner from the
- 12:14Marlins. Edward Cabrera makes, I want to
- 12:17say 4 or $5 million to offsets a fortune in Major League
- 12:21Baseball. That's nothing.
- 12:23And he's got control through 28 maybe.
- 12:27So you control him, he can't leave you.
- 12:30He makes very little money and he's a really good pitcher.
- 12:34Why would the Marlins trade him unless you just paid them a
- 12:37King's ransom? So look at the contract spot
- 12:41track.com, look at the contract, look at the amount of service
- 12:45time and then go, OK, I get it. I completely, completely yet if
- 12:49that guy's not available unless I grossly overpaid so I go back
- 12:53to a manual Class A Would I love to see the Cubs get a manual
- 12:56Class A? 100% Go look at the ridiculously
- 13:00team friendly deal that he signed.
- 13:02He's locked up multiple years at like no money in baseball terms.
- 13:08Well if you're the Cleveland Guardians, why are you trading
- 13:11that guy? Unless someone says I'm going to
- 13:13pay you 120 cents on the dollar for what he's worth.
- 13:18And then if you want to make multiple trades, you're like,
- 13:21hang on a second, I'm giving you who Well, we want we want Cassie
- 13:26or Kel and Casey, we want Jackson Wiggins and we want that
- 13:30guy. Well, that's way more than he's
- 13:31worth and you're not getting them.
- 13:33So that's where you got to look. Look for the one year deals or
- 13:37look for the bad contracts on a veteran that the Cubs are
- 13:40willing to assume a. Huge.
- 13:42Chunk of the money and then see where it goes.
- 13:45Last one for me. Captain deals with the Bears and
- 13:48Ryan pulls a contract extension through 2029.
- 13:51Now his contract lines up with the coach he just hired in Ben
- 13:54Johnson. Who are they bidding against?
- 13:57Were they scared he was going to leave?
- 14:00Say that again. Were were they scared he was
- 14:01going to leave? Why the contract extension for
- 14:03polls? Because if polls is not
- 14:07extended, he had two years left and let's assume that they don't
- 14:11have a huge year this year show progress, but it's still
- 14:15everyone's been well, he's in the final year of his deal.
- 14:17Are you extending him now? So then you're going to have to
- 14:19extend him or fire him. So this way, OK, that's your
- 14:23hand picked coach, that's your hand picked quarterback.
- 14:26There you go. And if at the end of this five
- 14:29year term you haven't gotten to where you want to go to, they're
- 14:33all gone. They're cleaning them all out.
- 14:35So this puts him and the coach on the same exact timeline.
- 14:39I really, really like what they did.
- 14:41I was asked to ask you about Harry Tenowitz.
- 14:43I hope I'm saying his name properly.
- 14:45Apparently a well known sports media personality from Chicago.
- 14:49I think at your station, ESPN 1000.
- 14:52Just your thoughts, Cap. Yeah, Harry Chinowitz was a
- 14:56friend. He's a really good guy.
- 14:58I mean, I really, really liked Harry.
- 15:01Harry had some health issues. He had a liver transplant a
- 15:04couple of years ago. He had a widely chronicled
- 15:08battle with substance abuse and cleaned his life up.
- 15:12But his health just never got back to where it needed to be.
- 15:16And unfortunately, he died yesterday at the age of 64.
- 15:20I remember Harry calling me. Not this past season, the season
- 15:23before. Hey brother, can you do me a
- 15:25favor? I know you're friends with Tom
- 15:26IS oh, my daughter is in school up there.
- 15:30I really want to take her to a game at Michigan State.
- 15:32And it's sold out. And I called is and said, hey,
- 15:35man, I need a favor. I never ask you for this.
- 15:37I need 2 really good seats. My guy's not in great health.
- 15:41He wants to take his daughter. And he set him up like right
- 15:44behind the bench. And Harry wrote me this
- 15:47beautiful note about what it meant and thanks so much.
- 15:50And I saw him, I want to say three or four months ago, I ran
- 15:55into him. He didn't look great, but I
- 15:57didn't think death was, you know, impending.
- 16:00He was a very talented guy. He was a stand up comic.
- 16:03He was in some movies early in his life.
- 16:06Like remember the movie Class with Jacqueline Bassett way back
- 16:10in the day. It's an old school movie,
- 16:12hilarious. And Harry was in it and he was
- 16:15just a good, good guy. And then we worked together at
- 16:1887.7, the game that I'll fated sports radio station in Chicago.
- 16:24And he lost that shutdown. It did not bring him back to
- 16:28ESPN 1000 where he tried to get back to and it had a DUI and got
- 16:33in some trouble. And unfortunately he's now gone
- 16:36at the age of 64. Good guy, wonderful father,
- 16:40loved his kids and I'll always smile when I think of him.
- 16:43Great story about his Oh Cap Good stuff.
- 16:45Hey Capra, go jump in the lake. I'm going to right now.
- 16:49See you buddy. Thanks for doing this Cap.
- 16:51All kid aside, appreciate the relationship pal.
- 16:54You got it. Love you guys.
- 16:55Yup, see you buddy. Have fun.
- 16:56David Kaplan, ESPN 1000 as he talks sports with Trent and I
- 17:01each and every Wednesday. Good stuff.
- 17:02Have you heard of Tenowitz? Harry Tenowitz?
- 17:04I have he was with Sean, told me the story.
- 17:08It was Sean that asked me to ask about him.
- 17:10I can't remember they but Yurkwich, Yurko.
- 17:13Yurko. Yep, and and Harry and somebody
- 17:16else were quite a popular team in Chicago sports talk radio.
- 17:21But cool, cool story. Kathy was in Izzo's wedding, or
- 17:24they were Izzo was in Kathy's wedding.
- 17:26Something like that. Anyway, censuring Stone of Iowa,
- 17:28they sponsor Kathy on a weekly basis.
- 17:31Thank you to Centurion Stone of Iowa for making this possible.

- 18:08The showroom is open, but it's open on Saturday if you can't
- 18:10get there during the week, where they're open Monday through
- 18:13Thursday from 8:00 to 5:00, Friday 8:00 to 4:00, but
- 18:15Saturday morning from 8:00 AM until noon.
- 18:18Centurion Stone of Iowa, good stuff from them and good stuff
- 18:24again from Cappy. Who do you think they're going
- 18:27to get to play third? Is it and is it a bigger deal
- 18:31than just the third bit? I mean, if it's Colorado, I mean
- 18:33Colorado if it's Arizona, right? I know that they've got their
- 18:37eye on a couple of pictures. Boys.
- 18:39Next two weeks can be fascinating when it comes to the
- 18:41trade deadline. It's.
- 18:42Probably going to be like Urias from the Orioles.
- 18:45It's something like that. It's going to be a low leverage
- 18:47thing like him. Just play Matt Shaw, right?
- 18:50He's a good glove man. He is.
- 18:51He's struggling to hit the ball. We think there's something there
- 18:54saw when he first came back. He's struggling as of late.
- 18:58But they do need, I guess they want somebody that they just
- 19:01because Palencia hasn't been there done that.
- 19:04He's great, been great during the regular season.
- 19:08I, I think the bullpen is fine. Keller's fallen on some hard
- 19:11times as of late, but he's had a terrific and and maybe the All
- 19:15Star break will help him immensely.
- 19:17Maybe it's just a veteran arm, maybe you know a guy that's he's
- 19:20not even a back end guy, it's just another one to kind of
- 19:22throw in the mix. Are you have have we heard the
- 19:25end of the Nico Horner trade stuff?
- 19:27Remember during the offseason he was he's a phenomenal player.
- 19:31Now he's not. There's no power.
- 19:33He's got one home run. He's a Gold Glover, makes
- 19:36phenomenal plays at second base. Dansby's Dansby, Michael Bush
- 19:42has been terrific. Both catchers.
- 19:44Maya's coming back. Chad Kelly, Where did that come
- 19:47from? Reese McGuire in in the interim.
- 19:51Well, Maya's coming back and the outfield is HAP, PCA and Tucker.
- 19:57Not bad. And oh, by the way, Saya
- 19:59Suzuki's got 27 bombs and leads the league at RBI.
- 20:03This team can win it all they if they get another arm.
- 20:08Rank the rank the NL for me. Dodgers and Phillies.
- 20:13I agree. Is there another?
- 20:15Yeah. The Cubs third, then the
- 20:17Brewers. Where are the Mets?
- 20:19I don't like the. Mets, you haven't mentioned the
- 20:21Giants or the Padres. And I won't.
- 20:23OK. Not my top five.
- 20:25So you think the Cubs 3 I had three or four, 3 or 4?
- 20:29Would you put the Brewers in front of them?
- 20:33It's going to be hell of a race. You know what worries me about
- 20:35the Phillies? Well, I don't care if they win
- 20:37nothing. You got big concerns over there
- 20:40at Philadelphia. I got a big ticket on
- 20:41Philadelphia, but it's their bullpen.
- 20:44Yes. Absolutely their lack of bullpen
- 20:47because they got a bunch of pieces too.
- 20:49The Cubs can win the World Series.
- 20:50Yes, the Cubs can win the World Series.
- 20:56Who in the American League? Can win a World Series.
- 20:58Can win the World Series? Can the Yankees?
- 21:02Not as they're currently constructed.
- 21:04I agree. Can the Blue Jays?
- 21:07Yes. You really?
- 21:08Think so? I think so.
- 21:09They have a they have so much top end talent too.
- 21:11Can the Astros? Yeah.
- 21:15Can the Tigers? What don't you like about the
- 21:20Tigers? I.
- 21:21Don't know. I mean, the answer is yes.
- 21:24If I'm throwing those teams in there, I you have to include the
- 21:26Tigers, no, who I might include even before the Yankees.
- 21:33Not the Red Sox. No, I like them though.
- 21:36You get up a + 650 to win that division.
- 21:39They're three back and they're going to spend.
- 21:42I believe that they're going to spend come trade deadline.
- 21:44So your answer must be the Mariners.
- 21:45It is the Mariners, but you know, I got an affinity with
- 21:48that whole pitching staff. Maybe it's a blind spot for me.
- 21:51Well, at least Casteel seems like he's back.
- 21:55Maybe. You know, I really like and he
- 21:56pitched in the All Star game last night was Brian Woo.
- 21:58Yes, he's a hell of a pitcher. Kirby's Kirby Gilbert's OK.
- 22:05If Castillo pitches like we think he can and has in the
- 22:08past, maybe, maybe they can. We'll take a time out.
- 22:11And of course, Gal Raleigh leading everything that helps.
- 22:13Good God. And Rosarena, they got some
- 22:15power in that line up. Right now, though, it's time to
- 22:18give you somebody an opportunity to win $1000.
- 22:20Head to kxando.com. The keyword this hour is bank.
- 22:24Bank KX and o.com this nationwide keyword bank your
- 22:28chance to win $1000 at KX and o.com Matt Rudy on the Open
- 22:33Championship next. Miller and Condon, Iowa Sports
- 22:36Radio Network. Hi, Miller and Condon, welcome
- 22:38back. Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 22:40Trent Condon, Ken Miller. Trent's plays of the day.
- 22:42He'll let you know who's he's betting on.
- 22:44The Open Championship circus sports sponsor.
- 22:47Those. Those come up about 10 minutes
- 22:49before the top of the hour. Matt Rudy, long time golf
- 22:52writer. He joins the program as he
- 22:54always does to re preview or to recap the majors or this year.
- 22:58Matt Rudy, we're going to impose on you again.
- 23:00It is a Ryder Cup year, as you know, so you haven't seen or
- 23:03heard the Last of Us just yet. So thanks for doing this.
- 23:06Matt, how are you? I want to do Big 10.
- 23:08I want to do Big 10 football preview too.
- 23:10Well, we can. And you know what's parties on
- 23:12the Hawkeye schedule? I think it's the final home game
- 23:15of the year for Iowa, I believe, so we'll do that, too.
- 23:19So, Royal Toonbrush, what do you know?
- 23:21Have you seen it in person? And what lies ahead?
- 23:26You know, the Port Rush is interesting in that Rory
- 23:30McIlroy, Rory Mcilroy's got the course record there 61 and shot
- 23:35it when he was 16 years old, which is really an interesting
- 23:37piece of trivia. I don't think the course plays
- 23:42the same way now as it did when he was 16, but you can't.
- 23:46I mean, it's such an interesting mixture of good feelings because
- 23:49it's a home game for him. Plus, you know, the all the
- 23:53higher level expectations that come from playing in front of an
- 23:56adoring crowd. You know, we talked about this
- 23:59after the masters and, you know, before the other majors this
- 24:02year. But the Rory promises that the
- 24:05let down is over and he's back to concentrating again.
- 24:08And this is going to be an interesting test that from, from
- 24:11what I'm hearing from from Ireland, there are some pockets
- 24:16of the golf course that are very score able, you know, driver
- 24:20drivable par fours, you know, places where you can be
- 24:23aggressive. And then there's pockets where
- 24:24if you're a foot in the wrong spot, you could be out of
- 24:28bounds. There's one over OB is 3 feet
- 24:30from the green. So I think there's, there's
- 24:34there's potholes everywhere. But we've talked about this for
- 24:3820 years now. I think this is my favorite one
- 24:41to watch because they do such a good job letting the golf course
- 24:45get out of the way and let the players do what they're, you
- 24:47know, let it be decided by who's playing great.
- 24:50So I mean, that's what I'm looking forward to, that the
- 24:52weather isn't crazy to the point that it severely disadvantages
- 24:57one side of the jar or the other, and that the the players
- 24:59decide what happens, not the golf course.
- 25:01Speaking of Rory, the last time a port rush did not go very well
- 25:04if it kind of overwhelmed to something that he mentioned.
- 25:07Listening to Rory this week, though, is jerk Rory done.
- 25:11Did he Get that out of the system now and he's back to
- 25:13normal. Nice Rory.
- 25:16Yeah, he he seemed like a different guy, even with that
- 25:18short haircut. Did we got his medication
- 25:21balanced that I, I, I think there's, there's a hangover.
- 25:26I, I think the way I would equate it, if you look at the
- 25:30way those NFL players respond when they win a Super Bowl, for
- 25:33example, I think if you went and talked to those players a week
- 25:36after the season, a week after the Super Bowl, all of the
- 25:40celebrating everything that you did to, to achieve this
- 25:43incredible difficult goal. Probably the last thing you want
- 25:47to do, you know, 7 or 10 days after that is go go to a
- 25:50walkthrough or you know, go to a practice.
- 25:52So I think Rory's dealing with answering the questions leading
- 25:56up to it and then answering the questions after it.
- 25:59And I think it's, it changed the equilibrium of what a weekend
- 26:04and week out experience was for him on tour.
- 26:08And I think getting away from it a little bit was good for him.
- 26:11I think being in Europe for a couple weeks has been good for
- 26:14him and he played pretty well last week.
- 26:17He finished second at the Scottish Open.
- 26:19So it's always hard to tell me. As you said, this is the I think
- 26:22he made a quad on the 1st. Hole the last.
- 26:25Time the championship was here, but he's probably hoping to
- 26:28maybe just make a par on the 1st hole and stay in.
- 26:31Stay in at least until you know Friday morning.
- 26:34Is this, of course, when we watch the the British Open that
- 26:37the pot bunkers just kill her? I mean, some guys haven't, you
- 26:41know, go to right handers trying to play left-hander.
- 26:43You're going back toward the tee with your next shot.
- 26:47Is this a golf course that pot bunkers will come into play?
- 26:50Do you know Matt? No, I mean, I think there's a
- 26:52little bit of that that's not a it's not an overwhelming
- 26:56feature. I highly recommend Michael Kim
- 26:59is a great follow on X and he's been doing a day in and day out
- 27:04review. And this this is the first time
- 27:06he's seen the golf course. And so the information that he's
- 27:09sharing on his X account, his X feed comes from not only APGA
- 27:13tour perspective, but the perspective of someone who's
- 27:15never seen the golf course before.
- 27:17And, and I think the the best thing you can hear from a player
- 27:21leading into the week is how fair it plays.
- 27:24And if you hit, you know, players are saying, hey, if you
- 27:26hit good shots, you can make a good score.
- 27:28If you hit a bad shot, you can get punished.
- 27:30And I think that's the prevailing thing that's going to
- 27:33happen here. I think everyone is rooting for
- 27:35there to be kind of standard Open Championship weather where
- 27:37you wear, you're wearing a kind of 1/4 zip and it might rain a
- 27:42little bit here and there, but hopefully avoid the some of the
- 27:45monsoon weather like we saw when Brian Harmon won a couple years.
- 27:48Ago What's the Twitter account again?
- 27:51Michael Kim is the is the KIMKIM?
- 27:55Yeah, OK, great. And he's a, he's an interesting
- 27:57follow. He does everything from take
- 27:59pictures of what the food's like in the players locker room to,
- 28:02you know, talk about his practice round and it's really
- 28:04interesting. Michael Kim to #1 Scotty
- 28:08Scheffler Scotty chasing the career slam.
- 28:11That's going to be a storyline this week, the horse of the
- 28:13betting favorite coming in last week at the Scottish Tita Green.
- 28:16He was the number one ranked player, 67th and putting though,
- 28:19and that is normally the issue when it comes to Scotty
- 28:22Scheffler. Slower greens, different type.
- 28:24Does he have it this? Can he putt well enough this
- 28:27week to win this golf tournament?
- 28:29Well, I think he can. The the the issue, if you want
- 28:33to call it that, is of the four majors, this is the one that his
- 28:37record is the the flimsiest in. It's not to say his record is
- 28:40bad. It's just not as good as it is
- 28:43in the in the other majors. But but you would think that
- 28:47this kind of tournament where there's different lives,
- 28:51different kinds of shots are encouraged in a different
- 28:53trajectory, You know, you can curve the ball different ways.
- 28:55All of that fits right into the way he likes to play.
- 28:59And I don't think he's particularly bothered by bad
- 29:02weather. He's played in a lot of wind and
- 29:04a lot of bad weather in Texas. And, and if you look at the map
- 29:08of where he's won golf tournaments, they're all
- 29:10different kinds of golf courses, all different parts of the
- 29:12country. You know, he's not really the
- 29:14sort of the traditional PGA Tour player that just wants to hit
- 29:18high and far. He does have that variability
- 29:21and that workability in his game.
- 29:23So I absolutely, I do think he can do it.
- 29:27He gave a fascinating interview the other day at his press
- 29:29conference. I don't know that he talked
- 29:32himself out of it, but he we talked a lot about how winning
- 29:36these things ultimately wasn't super satisfying for him and
- 29:40that, you know, it's a couple of minutes of excitement.
- 29:42Then you kind of pick, you know, where to go eat dinner.
- 29:45That was an interesting and very philosophical take from a guy
- 29:49that's got a strong family life and strong faith life.
- 29:53There's other things from off the golf course, but I think
- 29:58when we used to have this conversation about Tiger a lot,
- 30:01which is if he's just on the planet, when it comes to putting
- 30:04with Tiger was driving, If Tiger's just on the planet, he's
- 30:07so much better than everybody else from the rest of the parts
- 30:10of the game. And that's a good way to
- 30:11describe Scotty. If he's just on the planet with
- 30:14putting, all that other stuff is so good and it's been so dialed
- 30:17in for the last three or four months.
- 30:19I mean, there's a reason why he's such a giant favor.
- 30:22I think he's plus 550I mean, that's when you can, when you
- 30:26can go get, you know, somebody like Jon ROM for 18 to 1.
- 30:29I mean, that's, that's pretty that that gives an indication of
- 30:33how strongly people feel about the favorite.
- 30:35I'll go back to because there's just news today on Wyndham
- 30:37Clark. You may have seen, I'm sure you
- 30:39did, the fact that he's now barred from Oakmont, who hosts
- 30:42the the Open again in 2033. Maybe it's 10 years, whatever.
- 30:49I mean, I don't recall a golfer, you know, Rockstar sure, being
- 30:53banned from a well for throwing stuff out the window, but I
- 30:58mean, we, we, we saw the reports, etcetera.
- 31:00I don't recall a golfer being barred from a from a
- 31:03championship venue before, do you?
- 31:06It's such a, such a Country Club thing too, right?
- 31:08It's, it's almost like he changed his shoes in the, in the
- 31:10parking lot or something instead of going inside.
- 31:13I, I, I don't know what that does.
- 31:16I mean, it's it's certainly symbolic And I I do think that
- 31:20if it came down to it, he didn't do any of those things and he
- 31:23qualified for the US Open. I really don't think that the
- 31:26club is going to be able to tell the USGA.
- 31:29Yeah, well, that guy can't play because he didn't, you know, he
- 31:31didn't make it right and fix the, you know, fix the locker or
- 31:34whatever. I think it's much more of a
- 31:36symbolic thing for the members to, you know, kind of feel
- 31:40better about, you know, sticking up for their place.
- 31:43But it really does. It puts a highlight on some
- 31:46pretty terrible, you know, it's it's just not very good
- 31:50sportsmanship. Brooks kept guy at the live
- 31:52event a couple weeks ago get a bad tee shot and slammed his
- 31:54driver down and hooked his driver at A at a sign that was
- 31:58right next to a bunch of people in the gallery.
- 32:00It's the same kind of thing. It just shows that you're you
- 32:03know, you don't feel like you operate in the world where
- 32:06everybody else is living. And I think that's the part that
- 32:09is the most bothersome. That's somebody's locker, you
- 32:11know, that's that's somebody else's property.
- 32:13And I mean, I've got kids at home.
- 32:16I know what tantrums look like. I mean, that's a tantrum.
- 32:18Yeah, indeed. Give us a name or two maybe away
- 32:23from, you know, the the big names out there that that you're
- 32:26going to watch this week and maybe have a bet on.
- 32:29It's so interesting because it's it's hard to peg.
- 32:33And we talked, you know, we talked about players like Victor
- 32:36Hovland, for example. It's so hard to peg, you know
- 32:39where he is. But I mean, I think one of the
- 32:42interesting people that we don't talk a lot about and you look at
- 32:46their collective record in the in the Open Championship for the
- 32:49last 10 years, Jordan Spieth has got the second or third best
- 32:52record going back ten years in the Open Championship.
- 32:55Here's a guy who just had a kid literally this week.
- 32:58He hasn't really been at the front of anybody's mind.
- 33:02He's obviously he's done this before.
- 33:03He knows how to do it. And this is a venue where you
- 33:07can be a little bit, you know, you can take some creative
- 33:10approaches to how you play holes.
- 33:12So if you're telling me I can have Jordan Speed at 60 to 1 and
- 33:17I can have someone like Matt Fitzpatrick who's 40 to 1, I
- 33:20mean, to me those are two guys that with major championship
- 33:23pedigree at fairly long odds that have that, you know, I
- 33:28think have the brain to be able to play a golf course like this.
- 33:33Deep down the cut list is, is we seemingly get this every single
- 33:37year, right? And the British Open, a guy,
- 33:39even me, that's a more than a casual fan, I've never heard of
- 33:42this guy. We get that every year.
- 33:43Are there any EUR that we should be keeping an eye on?
- 33:46Any guys that the casual golf fan is probably not even going
- 33:49to know if they show up on the leaderboard on Thursday?
- 33:52Well, I does it have to be a European?
- 33:55I mean that I wish I wish Chris Goddard hadn't won last week.
- 34:00I was, I was thinking about how to talk to you guys about, you
- 34:02know, you know what to you know, how to preview this and some,
- 34:05you know, a deep track, so to speak, because he was in
- 34:08position to get a spot on this by being top three, not
- 34:11otherwise exempt. And he goes and he wins the
- 34:13tournament. So I would love to be able to
- 34:16say I called it before I talk to you, but I'll call that after
- 34:20the fact. But the the the Hoygard twins
- 34:22are are terrific players and, and I think those are those are
- 34:27two guys that have been in major championships since they were 18
- 34:31and 19 years old. And I think there's a learning
- 34:33curve that we saw with Zander Shotsley where you just have to
- 34:36do this a few times. I think Ludwig Oberg's going
- 34:39through the same kind of thing. You have to do this a few times
- 34:41and have a few near misses and have a couple car crashes before
- 34:44you can, you can really, you know, put your, put your imprint
- 34:49on it. But Nikolai Hogard at 100 to 1,
- 34:51I think that's a, he's a Danish player.
- 34:53He's just a fantastic player. He's a long hitter.
- 34:56He's got a really stylish game. That's, I mean, I think that's a
- 34:59fun guy to to watch for too. Well, 101 are probably decent
- 35:03priced top ten, decent priced top 20 as well.
- 35:05Good stuff. So Matt, are you going to do
- 35:07help Trent out for Monday? I won't talk to you until the
- 35:11Ryder Cup, so we'll talk then. And you being a Michigan State,
- 35:14Brad, will certainly do something prior to that week
- 35:18because the football season comes to an end.
- 35:20So I'll thank you now for doing what you do for us always.
- 35:22We'll talk to you in September. Matt.
- 35:24Rudy, thank you, buddy. I'll be ready.
- 35:26See you guys. Yeah, good to talk to you.
- 35:27Matt Rudy, long time golf writer at Golf Digest, now a ghost
- 35:31writer, but still writing on golf and doing so just with
- 35:34somebody else's name on it, gets credit for all the work that
- 35:38Matt Rudy does actually writing the book.
- 35:40How many bets have you got when it comes to do you?
- 35:42Do you have a handful? Yeah, probably.
- 35:45Do you have Victor Hovlin on your list?
- 35:46I. Don't that is 1 I I saw when we
- 35:49did our TV show you he was on there taking a flyer, right.
- 35:52And I don't love him this week. The form just isn't quite there
- 35:56that I'm looking for and kind of the way that I I put together
- 36:00all told, including, you know, top 10's and top 20s.
- 36:02I'll probably have, I don't know, 15 bets on it.
- 36:04Bobby McIntyre, you know me out. Of every week.
- 36:07You know me well, I love my Bobby Mac and he's definitely
- 36:11going to be a part of the card. I'll have a little bit on Lowry.
- 36:15He won it last time it was there, right?
- 36:17Yeah, so. So that's always a piece of it,
- 36:19and his didn't. Draw a sober breath for two
- 36:22weeks. My kind of guy absolutely
- 36:24planned on doing that here in just a few days.
- 36:26Yes, set your alarm. It'll be set as long as I don't
- 36:31turn it off when I get up to. Take a leak, you land Monday.
- 36:34At what time? I think we get there at like
- 36:351:20 Pacific Time. Something like that is when
- 36:39we'll be landing. We'll get to Circa by 2:00.
- 36:42Oh my. And away throw.
- 36:44Your bags in the room and write down to the world's largest
- 36:46sports. Book absolutely well got to hit
- 36:49the cramps table. On your way down to the world's
- 36:51largest, you got to walk right by.
- 36:52Lucas is already working on content, is he?
- 36:55And Lucas has already figured out what's he going to do for
- 36:57the first time, so he's going to be taking videos for it.
- 36:59A lot of social media, making sure you're following along on
- 37:02and on Instagram, on the KXNO web page there in the IVA Sports
- 37:05Radio network, follow along their Facebook, Twitter of
- 37:08course, and we will have plenty of content from Vegas.
- 37:11Speaking of plenty of content in Vegas, I was struck and maybe
- 37:14maybe you've noticed this before, but I never did walking
- 37:18through the casino. How many social, what they call
- 37:21them creators have set up their phone and it's and it's pointed
- 37:26at the slot machine and it's just they sit there and they
- 37:30just spin, spin, spin. And I guess they're way needing
- 37:32to hit. Yeah, absolutely.
- 37:33Because if they hit the jackpot, more people are going to.
- 37:36I mean, there had to be a half dozen of them.
- 37:38We're out of time for this break.
- 37:39Trends, plays of the day, our next.
- 37:41Miller and Condon, Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 37:45Miller and Condon, welcome back. Final couple of minutes here
- 37:48again, top of the hour. The drive.
- 37:49The drive is no longer. Trent did it again.
- 37:51Damn it. Yeah, it'll happen.
- 37:54They're coming off the bench, is what Sean Roberts and Lucas
- 37:56Strainer doing. What are you betting?
- 37:57Who are your golfers? Five to win, will throw like 1/2
- 38:01unit on each of them. ROM, Bobby Mack, Robert
- 38:04McIntyre, Oberg, Lowry. Justin Rose is 75 to one.
- 38:08That's just crazy to me and especially as well as he played
- 38:10last week. I'll have a Xander in there,
- 38:13probably a top 10. Here's one for you.
- 38:16Top debutant, 12 to one. Andrew Novak.
