- 0:45Welcome back to the boundary Corner podcast.
- 0:49Brother. We are back after a little
- 0:51layoffs. I'm Curtis Wilson.
- 0:53I'm Brian Sigler. Yeah buddy.
- 0:55It's been a little bit of time here but we're back at it here
- 0:57on a Wednesday night. Doing what we do, we got a lot
- 1:03of topics tonight. A lot of stuff to cover.
- 1:06We spoke last week on Monday and we basically said we don't have
- 1:13enough to go this week, maybe. 30 minutes.
- 1:16Let's Skip and it's like the college football.
- 1:19God said, oh really guys, here's a bunch of crap.
- 1:24Yeah, well, some content, we got some content for you.
- 1:26Yeah, we have some hokey stuff, we got some hokey adjacent
- 1:29stuff. We got some national stuff.
- 1:30Here you go, he's everything. And it's everywhere.
- 1:33And, you know, we haven't been here in a few weeks.
- 1:35But for the next three weeks, you're going to see us back to
- 1:38back to back. We each then we're going to take
- 1:41a little break before the season and for the Camp starts but, you
- 1:44know, your boys. We got to have a little Vacation
- 1:45time Brian had a wedding to go to.
- 1:48We've been doing the normal spawn, summertime stuff here.
- 1:53Yeah, it kind of is what it is, everything between the pool and
- 1:58Cocktails and cookouts. Yeah, trip trip trip to New York
- 2:03for a wedding, had another wedding thrown in there.
- 2:06Been been down to the beach, a couple times, not not anywhere
- 2:12far away. Just just Virginia Beach with
- 2:14the inlaws, So but it's been a good time.
- 2:17It's been, it's been a fun summer.
- 2:18So far, we got through the fourth had a good time.
- 2:21So a little fireworks, you know, didn't didn't blow up little
- 2:26finger off or anything. So I think we're doing, all
- 2:28right. He should just say he didn't
- 2:31jpp. I did not jpp it.
- 2:35Oh no, I'm not going to roll in here.
- 2:37Missing digits. I think I'm good.
- 2:40But let's get to a brownie. Have so much to cover.
- 2:42Let's hit a couple quick headlines before we get into the
- 2:44deep topics of the night. Let's start with this.
- 2:47Now, it's just a few weeks ago. Pete Morris is essentially no
- 2:50longer the assistant ad. He has moved to Northern Iowa
- 2:55and is now the director of University relations.
- 2:57I have not seen any announcement as of this time.
- 3:00I'm who is replacement is if somebody has let us know, I
- 3:04heard it was up to her mop with a bucket for a head on a great
- 3:08jobs. Well, let's just say this, we
- 3:14clearly know that over the last about six months, seven months,
- 3:19people like RJ of the Hokey football Twitter account.
- 3:23Yeah, they took they took away his passwords.
- 3:25He was no longer. They send me the tweets and you
- 3:30could tell it. It was obvious.
- 3:33Yes, we hit 3 because dude, tweeted the same from The Hokey
- 3:37account, like he did from his personal account.
- 3:38Man, only thing missing is he didn't tweet some like weird-ass
- 3:42steak. was he was eating at night, he was leaving in but
- 3:45that but the bigger pieces, it finally, we noticed after that
- 3:47time, it looks like they had given it to someone potentially
- 3:52a student. You can tell by the way it's
- 3:54tweeted it's not your you have some set time stuff but it's not
- 3:59everything set timed. It's in random stuff out there.
- 4:02Some fun stuff Graphics Department always doing an
- 4:05awesome job. So Pete's going to be interested
- 4:07to see cuz I feel like this is going to be one of those Brent
- 4:11priors you kind of know about because this is essentially
- 4:14going to be his media guy. So interesting, I'm assuming is
- 4:17going to come from Penn State at some point.
- 4:22State or some other stuff that he's had along the way.
- 4:25Exactly. Exactly.
- 4:28All right, let's hit this real quick.
- 4:30A little national news, it's not official yet, but it looks like
- 4:35there's been recommendations for transfer portal Windows.
- 4:39It used to basically just be a free-for-all for nine months.
- 4:43From basically August 12 May 1 in that's just dumb.
- 4:48You have kids trans you know getting in the portal in season.
- 4:52But now they're looking at potentially two windows
- 4:55essentially, the way it's shaping up one after second
- 4:58national Signing Day and then one after Spring ball for a
- 5:01couple weeks. I will say I like this because a
- 5:08it to me it helps the students out because they need to commit
- 5:15to where they're going to be at for the semester because how
- 5:19many kids are out there right now, without a place to go.
- 5:22It said, yes sad because there are so many kids that do not
- 5:26have a home and and some kids, I think it's going to help having
- 5:31them, you know, if it's one of those in season.
- 5:33Ian's, you know, if the situation is unfavorable hey you
- 5:36stick it out for the rest of the season, you might get some extra
- 5:38tape that's going to benefit exactly where your next stop is.
- 5:43So but then also, with the whole idea of the Spring ball thing Is
- 5:50if you go through spring practice to where you are,
- 5:52right. Yep.
- 5:53Go to Spring practice where you are again more additional tape.
- 5:57You know, there's tape going on every day inside these programs
- 6:00and if you like you're not the fit again, there's more info to
- 6:03get out to your potential. Next school.
- 6:06Also like having it after national Signing Day.
- 6:08The second one, which should be the only one but that's neither
- 6:12here nor there because at least at that point in time or the
- 6:16coaching. Staffs now week away from the
- 6:18student athlete They know where they sit at, right?
- 6:21They know exactly where they sit at and it's kids start going.
- 6:25They can start preparing for the next recruiting cycle versus the
- 6:29way it is. Now, you know, you could be
- 6:32sitting there and it's like, okay, boom, dropping the hammer
- 6:36in the middle of the season. It's like, okay, we didn't
- 6:38account for this. So I think the winners are a
- 6:41good idea. Of course, they're planning on
- 6:43it. Because what else does the NCAA
- 6:44do? They can't make decisions to
- 6:46save their life. So you the n-c-double-a having a
- 6:51good idea put on their plate and then talking about it and
- 6:55punning. I've never heard that story
- 6:57before in my life. Oh wait that's every situation
- 7:01that we've been dealing with the past 15 20 years and it's
- 7:04probably why the situation we're going to talk about a little
- 7:07lady. Here has happened and eventually
- 7:09I think I want to see any Josh P, put it out there for those
- 7:13who hate the NCAA, what happened?
- 7:15Kind of could be the beginning of the end.
- 7:17So we'll see ya. Yeah, and I mean, let's talk
- 7:20about the windows a little bit more real quick before you move
- 7:22on. You know, we talked you talked
- 7:24about the window after the the second signing day, I'm a bigger
- 7:29fan of maybe having it after the first Signing Day, okay?
- 7:33Only because if you're looking to get enrolled in a new school,
- 7:39get in the winter workouts, with that new school, the timing
- 7:43works better like mid-December through early January versus Has
- 7:50little bit later in January. And if that be weary in, that
- 7:55makes sense to either way, you've got to have a time limit
- 7:57on it, you can't just have a free-for-all like, it's been but
- 8:00again, something the NCAA didn't want to govern as usual still
- 8:05not governing at the moment. So hopefully it gets worked out
- 8:08one way or the other by someone of the other real quick kick,
- 8:11the basketball. You met illuma, did not get
- 8:14drafted, but he has, you know, signed on with the Grizz I think
- 8:19me and you were to the point he made the right decision.
- 8:22You know, obviously now he's got a free agent contract in
- 8:24regardless, what workouts, he would works out in the NBA.
- 8:27The hope is he can make a roster and stay in the league 10 years.
- 8:32Yeah, but I think now because he's getting that pub at the NBA
- 8:36level I think if he cannot get on with anyone in the league
- 8:41he's going to have a 10 or 12 year career somewhere overseas
- 8:45whether it's Germany. Italy, Spain, France.
- 8:48Some of those you know good second-tier leagues.
- 8:52Yep. And have a very healthy living
- 8:53like several Hokies have over the last decade.
- 8:57Yeah, I mean he's definitely going to be a guy that can tear
- 8:59up one of the European leagues. You know whether he can catch on
- 9:03and find a bench role or a role player roll with with an NBA
- 9:08team is to be seen but you know, I definitely think he's gonna,
- 9:12he's got professional career ahead of him for the next five
- 9:17to ten years regardless of whether that's here or somewhere
- 9:21overseas. He's now so best of luck to
- 9:24alumina in the future, and Brian, we've hit it.
- 9:29We are about to hit one of our three big topics tonight.
- 9:34We're going to look at recruiting Because boy.
- 9:36Oh boy has the last week. Been pretty crazy for the Hokies
- 9:42as the Hokies landed six commits.
- 9:45Um, you know, since roughly the end of last week.
- 9:49Yep. Currently her 24/7, ranked 35th
- 9:53with with 15 total commits. Remember, this is no limit this
- 9:58year. So I think we're halfway there.
- 10:01I think we'll see it. I think at least 10 more,
- 10:04probably 15 more or by having this shit, What we're Living on
- 10:09a Prayer. We're halfway there.
- 10:11We're halfway there. We're Living on a Prayer.
- 10:12Yes, exactly. 35th in the overall and the composite kind
- 10:18of where we said we should be. We won't top 30.
- 10:21I think we can live with 35 but let's talk about these kids
- 10:24crying. Take a look at them.
- 10:26Each, let's start with the first commit here.
- 10:29You know, we talked about, you got to look at the small school.
- 10:32You cannot Over look like places, where we grew up and
- 10:38they didn't Overlook and it's to vorian Copeland at Appomattox
- 10:43counting. Not too far from where we grew
- 10:45up. He's a linebacker Prospect for
- 10:472476. 493 pounds, he is the 19th, ranked player in the state
- 10:53of Virginia. He is a three-star, 87 /, 24/7.
- 10:59And you know, his offer lists Definitely a smart kid with
- 11:06offers from Pain, Princeton and Dartmouth.
- 11:12But essentially, it came down really to UVA and Tech he chose
- 11:16Tech. So just kind of taking a look at
- 11:18him. Brian.
- 11:19What are you projecting for Copeland?
- 11:21He's kind of that guy could see probably going to start in that
- 11:25Sam roll. But could potentially move over
- 11:27to will, depending on how much he's able to put on Weight Wise
- 11:32and play against the Run. But I like his build out the
- 11:37gate. That 64 frame can definitely
- 11:41take a little bit more size. Get him in the weight room.
- 11:44Get a little bit more weight on him and see what he can do.
- 11:46But runs pretty well. I like his athleticism.
- 11:51We'll see if he can hold up at Sam but if he's not at saying, I
- 11:54could see him sliding over to will at some point.
- 11:57Um, you know, do you? I mean, I think he's one of
- 12:01those guys that's probably when he steps on campus is a
- 12:03three-year project. Appomattox is a very small.
- 12:05I can't remember their to a or 1A 2A.
- 12:09I think to a well. So, he's coming from a smaller
- 12:12school. He probably is the best athlete
- 12:14on the field, every time he plays.
- 12:16Yeah. And which sometimes that hurts,
- 12:18but sometimes that helps You know it's one of those coin
- 12:22flip, some guys get in they can't they can't deal with it
- 12:25some guys get it and they strive to be what they were before.
- 12:29So you're projecting at a linebacker position.
- 12:33His primary recruiters Joe Rudolph and Chris, Mar I think,
- 12:38you know, we saw Rudolph, we know, he went through glass, he
- 12:40was down on Southside. So clearly he's kind of found
- 12:43his neck of the woods there and sure for sure.
- 12:46Awesome, good land there. Now, the next one. you know that
- 12:52we went out of state on But it's still within the footprint, by
- 12:57maybe 10 minutes. Obviously a connection to Brent
- 13:03Pride Penn State and prize listed as his primary recruiter
- 13:08with more being a secondary and that's a sand Stevens at a
- 13:12Decatur Central and Indianapolis 64, 210 lb linebacker, a top 10
- 13:21player in the state of Indiana three-star. 87, And you know
- 13:26offers from Iowa State Purdue and you know looks like
- 13:31Cincinnati had some interest from some other big ten schools
- 13:34like Nebraska and Minnesota. So definitely Real Deal Prospect
- 13:39obviously with Tommy Stevens is brother being you know also a
- 13:44division one player footballs in his blood Brian.
- 13:48Where are you projecting Stevens?
- 13:50And you know how far do you think he has to come?
- 13:55He doesn't have to come. As far as Copeland, I'm
- 13:57projecting him at a Mike, I think, just based on his speed,
- 14:03he's probably doesn't have enough quickness to to be
- 14:06outside, whether it will or in Sam.
- 14:08I think he's definitely going to end up in Mike, but I like, I
- 14:11like his instincts. I like his technique.
- 14:14He's somebody that depending on what happens.
- 14:19You know, with after this season, I can see him having the
- 14:22impact probably in his second year on campus.
- 14:27So me he's he could be the real deal, not necessarily an elite
- 14:31player at the position, but somebody solid that can hold
- 14:34that down as we kind of transition from one regime to
- 14:40the next. Bo super interesting to see that
- 14:44prowess is primary and that might have been.
- 14:47Maybe he was the primary when he was at Penn State and it's just
- 14:50one of those things that can carry over because very rarely.
- 14:52Do you see a head coach be a primary only guy?
- 14:56So you kind of Wonder is this his linebacker?
- 15:01His prototypical Mike linebacker would just suggest be to go
- 15:05ahead. Just just enough speed to go you
- 15:07start sideline to sideline and get there.
- 15:10He's not Got somebody that's gonna, You Know, cover a slot
- 15:14receiver, one-on-one. You don't, you don't want that
- 15:16match up a lot of the game but he's a guy that can hang in
- 15:19there and get the job done. And as you said, I think, you
- 15:22know, Pride was probably his primary at Penn State.
- 15:25They already had a relationship established, he kept that going
- 15:29brought Marvin's and smart was going to be his position coach,
- 15:32and his coordinator, and kind of let the rest take care of
- 15:35itself. But I think of the, the
- 15:38linebacking pickups that we had, this is probably my Favorite.
- 15:41Because I think it's a really good fit for prize system,
- 15:44especially if you know, he's able to stick it to my position.
- 15:47Yeah. Now, he does play also
- 15:50quarterback and I know there was the joke from his brother about
- 15:52possibly getting some time in the room with Tyler.
- 15:55Bowen, I don't foresee that, but it's always, you know, it's
- 16:00always good to know, having a linebacker who played that
- 16:02position, because there is a lot of the mental parts to
- 16:06understand. If you're playing a, how many
- 16:08times do we always hear it? Crying.
- 16:09Go back to your Everett team with Peyton Manning when they
- 16:12played the Ravens. How many matchups was it between
- 16:15Manning and Louis? Making the calls, make the
- 16:17adjustments making the second one.
- 16:19So definitely like having that background with him.
- 16:23Yeah, definitely a chess match there.
- 16:24So if you can get somebody that can handle that part of it.
- 16:28And kind of see things as they're happening and pick it
- 16:30up, make the adjustments, get everybody where they need to be
- 16:32get the alignment right. That's what you need.
- 16:36Absolutely. All right.
- 16:38But we weren't done yet. That's, that's the
- 16:42understatement. Oh my gosh.
- 16:44We're just getting halfway there now.
- 16:45And the next was Caleb. Woodson had a battlefield up in
- 16:49Haymarket rated as a safety 63 200 pounds.
- 16:55Number 31, player, in state of Virginia, three starred in 86.
- 16:58Held some offers and some interest from Florida State Wake
- 17:01in Virginia Ryan. You immediately told me the
- 17:05second we talked about him. He's not going to play safety in
- 17:08this system. Yeah.
- 17:10I mean I think he's going to end up at Sam.
- 17:11I think he could play safety. There's potential there but I
- 17:15think speed is probably his biggest weakness, top end speed.
- 17:19I think we can get him at Sam and because he does tackle.
- 17:22Well, he does have really good. Instincts.
- 17:25I think Sam is going to be where he ends up long-term and I think
- 17:28he can really thrive in that position.
- 17:32Also, good to see here, you know, Battlefield Haymarket
- 17:35that's up in Northern Virginia, right?
- 17:38Right. Yeah.
- 17:39My losing my mind. So that's kind of the, you know.
- 17:42It's kind of one of your first Northern.
- 17:43Virginia wins there again. It's anything we see in
- 17:48Virginia. Now, do we want four stars?
- 17:51Do we want? Five stars from Virginia?
- 17:52Yes. But it's something we've said
- 17:55since day one, it's you have to lay the foundation.
- 17:59You have clue to make the relationships and taking players
- 18:03who, you know, are, you know, ranked in the top thousand and
- 18:08ranked in the top 30 in the state, that's what you do.
- 18:11You find the players that fit your system and what you hope
- 18:14is, it's the benefits later, right?
- 18:17It's treating Caleb Woodson and his family in the coaching staff
- 18:20at Battlefield, right? If they have a four stars, In
- 18:24two or three years, he knows the relationship.
- 18:28He knows how the staff treats people.
- 18:31Yeah, that's going to be the big thing.
- 18:33We're laying the foundation. Again, we're getting back into
- 18:36those big schools that produce consistent division.
- 18:43One Talent within the state, and we're getting those
- 18:46relationships back. We've gotten away from that.
- 18:50We had gotten to a point where if it wasn't, you know, a
- 18:54relationship that was already there it was, they were finding
- 18:57it, hard to get some some Headway of some of these key
- 19:00recruits in the state. Eight.
- 19:02This is laying the foundation and the guy we're going to talk
- 19:04about next is, is another big part of laying that Foundation.
- 19:07It's at Primary School's, absolute, before we jump to him.
- 19:11We got a couple folks that are already hitting us up in the
- 19:13chat tonight. Brian, let's throw those up
- 19:16here. Obviously, Dwight always we
- 19:19appreciate you listening, brother, talking about
- 19:22battlefields of great program and he can play and he is a tech
- 19:25guy. Love to hear that from the white
- 19:27and again, it's making the in rows in Battlefield, and there's
- 19:30one more in there, Brian. And talking about a Saint
- 19:33Stephen's, our coach Robbie Compton.
- 19:35I buddy talking about Mike in this system is closed as a cube.
- 19:38You can be on the D so we hear that about Stephens again.
- 19:42It's good feelings. But Brian, the next one that
- 19:46happened. I think it hit watching the
- 19:49video gave chills seeing at one picture with his dad's name, the
- 19:55reflection, the picture of Dad in the background Braylon
- 19:59Johnson at a Highland Springs. Restar when he committed it it
- 20:04felt like one of your own was coming home and it was one of
- 20:08those. I don't think I ever had a time
- 20:12since he started his recruiting, that he wasn't going to come.
- 20:18I think he knows the importance of it.
- 20:20I think he knows how big a player.
- 20:22His dad was in the building of the foundation back in the 90s.
- 20:27I think he understands how important player he is right now
- 20:30and his high school is to the rebuilding of the tech program.
- 20:35Yeah, this is a big pickup on several fronts.
- 20:38Number one, he's a good player. That's, that's first and
- 20:41foremost. But number two, what it means to
- 20:44get a legacy player from a program like hi.
- 20:48Springs, son of a great coach and that's not hyperbole in the
- 20:55slightest, a great, great coach, and great form of hokey.
- 21:01So, I mean, this is, this is what it's all about.
- 21:04And watching the, the commit video, obviously, both of us,
- 21:09you know, in the 804 area. I mean, it was, it was special,
- 21:15you know, watching hokey highlights watching.
- 21:18Shut up from, from his, his area, the city.
- 21:21I mean it was special across-the-board.
- 21:23Yes, it was super special. Now let's talk about the
- 21:27football player now because, you know, you know, he's Lauren
- 21:33Johnson's kid. Everybody knows that, but when
- 21:36you look at the tape, E6, 170 pounds that project him and
- 21:40safety. Is he staying at safety?
- 21:41Is he a corner? Where do you think they're going
- 21:44to try to fit him in? I think he's probably stays the
- 21:49safety. I think he could be free safety
- 21:51in this system. He might end up sliding over a
- 21:54corner. A lot of times though.
- 21:56You know guys started corner and get moved to safety so I don't
- 21:59know if that's the path. He's if he's gonna come in and
- 22:03you know go through a spring or fall with with cheetah and then
- 22:07slide over with piercing after that.
- 22:09We'll see. But I think ultimately he's
- 22:11going to end up playing safety for us.
- 22:16I like to hear that, you know, just just one of those, just one
- 22:20of those things that make you feel good.
- 22:21One of the guys who was the original DB, you son, hopefully
- 22:25bring it back to prominence again.
- 22:27And I think again, in the state, the Highland Springs, Inn Road
- 22:31were made at the end of the Fuente era.
- 22:33Really driven hard home by JC. I really do believe that I
- 22:38really do believe, JC and Darrell and couple.
- 22:40Other guys, really drove it home.
- 22:42And I think this program or this current program, Am really knows
- 22:47the focus of it. They know the focus of it and
- 22:50it's awesome to see. So you know, I'm just glad he's
- 22:56committed again. If you have not watched the
- 22:57video go watch it. Especially if you're from here
- 23:00in Richmond. It'll it should make you feel
- 23:02some chills. All right, Brian, let's talk
- 23:05about some speed. Next, let's talk about the
- 23:09eastern part of North Carolina, Southern ashes on trail on
- 23:12Mitchell. 62 185 class. Bad as an athlete.
- 23:18I think we are on his only division or his only P5 offer
- 23:24East Carolina appstate, some other folks that had a look at
- 23:28them here, 26 player in the state of North Carolina, but you
- 23:32know, we hear speed and then you hear ten point.
- 23:36Three hundred meters, that's fast.
- 23:39Yeah, he's a burner, he's a burner and yeah, he's fast and
- 23:45I'll tell you what, I like he's fast, but I see 62.
- 23:49I see 185, hmm. So he's fast but he's not like
- 23:55small fast. He's got a little bit of size to
- 23:58him and I think that's going to end up having him somewhere on
- 24:02that wide receiver position. And I like that for him, I think
- 24:08initially at the gate, he's probably going to be a special
- 24:10teams contributor, but I think long-term, you can see him, you
- 24:13know, making some noise, even as just You know, primary, you
- 24:17know, one-dimensional thread as a wide receiver, you can see him
- 24:21making some plays that way. Where's the tape out on him?
- 24:24What's it showing him doing? You know, down at Southern Ash,
- 24:26that you've seen? You know, he does a little bit
- 24:31of everything for them but you know, they had them lined up a
- 24:35lot of different places on the field, okay?
- 24:38On both sides of the ball. But I like I said, I think
- 24:41primarily he's going to be a white out for us.
- 24:44I'm just based on his frame, his speed and what he can do with
- 24:48the football. Yeah, primary recruiter Willis
- 24:52to whole second date was Tyler. Bowling me and you talked about
- 24:56this with everybody Robbie and some other folks, as well Steve
- 25:00Holt was brought in him and Derek Jones were brought in to
- 25:04sort of handle North Carolina. Stews dad was a coach down there
- 25:07one, some one, a lot lot of connections and you know when
- 25:13you when you hear athlete and then I hear what you talked
- 25:16about like he's everywhere backfield all over the line
- 25:19playing defense. Again, I don't feel like we were
- 25:24doing that as much in the last are sometimes, it's just go find
- 25:27the best athlete on the field. You bring him in, you figure out
- 25:30where he plays the best Collegiate football and then you
- 25:32let him do it. We saw that how many times in
- 25:35the Beamer area and it worked out a lot, though.
- 25:40You know, sometimes we can don't try to be, he is a running back
- 25:45like no, he is a football player figure out of the running backs,
- 25:49his best position. Impress talked about in several
- 25:52his press conference. I'm sorry.
- 25:54You know, we'll get you on campus.
- 25:55We know you're a player, we like, how you go about your
- 25:57business, we'll figure out where you can best, we can best
- 26:01maximize your abilities for your success, and for our success and
- 26:07I think that's one of the type of players that we're trying to
- 26:09get on campus. And another one, is the the next
- 26:12guy we're going to talk about here in just a couple minutes.
- 26:15Absolutely another athlete out of the state of South Carolina,
- 26:20a top 10 player in the state of South Carolina three star on.
- 26:25Had some interest from West Virginia and Penn State and
- 26:30Thomas Williams. Five foot, ten hundred eighty
- 26:33pounds out of Powdersville, tell me just out of Greenville area.
- 26:38What's the tape saying on him? I mean, Corner running back.
- 26:42You know, is he another defensive back?
- 26:44The cheetah was his Primary receiver.
- 26:48Yeah, I could see him being a corner, I can see him line it up
- 26:52at running back. He's got, you know, I'm not
- 26:54going. I'm not going to compare him to
- 26:56to Macho Harris, but he's got some of the same type of build,
- 26:59and same type of qualities. Not quite as Elite level as
- 27:04Macho, obviously, but he's got some of the same type of traits
- 27:08and I think I can see him at running back.
- 27:10I can see him out there corner, but you know, we'll see if he
- 27:14can do. Open the into a starter at those
- 27:16positions but he's got talent. He's got some some, some good
- 27:21wiggle at the running back position, he's able to break
- 27:24away when he gets in the open field they use them a lot on
- 27:26some screens and things out of the bout fact feel things
- 27:30outside of the box so he's able to do those things as well.
- 27:34So it might be if he ends up running back, maybe more of a
- 27:39more of a chance Black Rain Blackshear type type model, I
- 27:43think probably less less of a Seaver than those two, but still
- 27:47very capable. Awesome.
- 27:52Anytime you hear name, Macho Harris, it's tough to live up to
- 27:54that, but it's awesome to hear the qualities, again.
- 27:57He's an athlete. I just said he get the athletes
- 28:01in the door, figure out their best place to play.
- 28:03Also like going down the South Carolina, getting a top 10
- 28:06player, they have certain States, if you can get a top 10
- 28:09player and you feel good about it and you know, but let's just
- 28:14talk over all about the last week.
- 28:16Really, it was 647 of the people when you were announcing And the
- 28:22seventh it had it had been the ups and downs ups and downs was
- 28:28you know, behind the scenes or you know they didn't know it was
- 28:31going to do. He eventually chose elsewhere
- 28:33but No, there's no big like Crown Jewel in this with the
- 28:39exception of Braylon because of who he is but they didn't know
- 28:43how hundred player anything. But what does he go?
- 28:46When you go on a streak like that, when you get six good
- 28:50players they aren't scraping they're all about 86. 87.
- 28:54Probably a few of them could get bumped higher this year.
- 28:57But what does that mean to you in your head?
- 29:00When you hear this was a run good players.
- 29:04Different areas of the country you know athletic and overall
- 29:08just good football players. Yeah.
- 29:10I mean Mitchell aside, these are all like mid-to-high three star
- 29:13players. These are your your typical Oil,
- 29:16you know, year two year, three contributors coming in, so I'm
- 29:21hoping to see, maybe even a little bit higher than that, for
- 29:24a couple of these guys, depending on some of these areas
- 29:26where we have depth concerns. But I think it's a good solid
- 29:31running gives you momentum on the trail of gives you something
- 29:33to talk to other recruits about and I think that's big when you
- 29:38got guys in the boat. It's a little bit easier sell
- 29:41than when you're trying to sell. Sell something that Other people
- 29:46haven't bought into yet. And we know that the guys on
- 29:51that roster had bought in, but we still have to get that buy-in
- 29:54from the guys that are coming here for their future and that's
- 29:58still to be determined and it's nice when you get a run like
- 30:01this, especially from a couple key areas in your state, along
- 30:06with some good grabs in the, the outer reaches of your footprint.
- 30:13It gives you momentum on the trail and it gives you something
- 30:15else to sell. Did you something else to get
- 30:18your? Get your name on the lips
- 30:20especially in the state of North Carolina and South Carolina that
- 30:24when it's discussed, that this player here went to Virginia
- 30:29Tech from this state. Now, I really look at times
- 30:32Williams with that top 10 player in South Carolina, leaving,
- 30:35South Carolina. I mean, it looks like he was was
- 30:38not recruited by those down there, but 24/7 puts him as a
- 30:41top 10. Like we've always said, trust
- 30:4324/7. He's lowered really by the
- 30:46composite rankings elsewhere. Because if everybody had in
- 30:50there, he'd be a significantly higher than the composite but
- 30:53it's it's getting those Good Vibes in his those kids.
- 30:56As we talked about and Dwight mention about Battlefield
- 31:00getting the good relationship building.
- 31:03When you have that stud and the coaches at your school in the
- 31:08family's inside your school and the teachers can speak to who
- 31:12these people are and where you're going.
- 31:15It's so key because you see it all the time and we've seen the
- 31:19social media blitz is and you just hear stories from the
- 31:22Camp's, Real Deal coaching staff here that this isn't a
- 31:26nine-to-five for them that I think these guys eaten, breathe
- 31:31sleep at all the time. Yep.
- 31:33Yep. And you can tell the seriousness
- 31:36that they go about their business.
- 31:38Yeah, you know, we'll see if that turns into the recruiting
- 31:42winds that we need and the winds on the field.
- 31:44We need but we're definitely going about our business a lot
- 31:49better than we've seen in the last, you know, five, six,
- 31:52seven, eight years, nine years, whoo, that definitely throughout
- 31:58the majority of the of the Fuente era so we can definitely
- 32:03attest to that. We can we can tell that that
- 32:08we're putting the effort in and we're seeing we're starting to
- 32:11see some results, we're starting to see that pay off some.
- 32:14I'm hoping that we get some more bigger wins as we kind of close
- 32:19out the back half of this cycle that's going to be important.
- 32:25Yeah we got it. We had a lot more left.
- 32:27We got a lot more left. We got we got about we're a
- 32:30little over halfway through right now, we're but we need to
- 32:34keep pressing forward. And keep looking for areas where
- 32:40we can gain some ground but I feel like we're building the
- 32:43right foundation. I just want to see maybe one or
- 32:46two home runs as we're hitting these singles, and doubles on
- 32:50the trail. All right here.
- 32:54Well Brian. So we went to bed a week ago and
- 33:01you know, College football seem normal, right?
- 33:06They'll come is intact, you know looking at the bigger Team
- 33:10league, you know Camp sir, you know the dead periods coming on.
- 33:15Obviously the coaches are probably wrapping evaluations
- 33:18probably about to take their two-week vacation before they
- 33:20get ramped up for camp and all of a sudden on the 30th, it
- 33:26dropped that USC and UCLA would be moving to the Big Ten.
- 33:34Yep, let me go ahead, but before I give mine, give me your
- 33:38initial reaction because I'm sure your phone blew up.
- 33:42I'm sure your Twitter notifications and other
- 33:44notification with this is like, what the hell?
- 33:47It's you 30th? Well, yeah, it was blowing up.
- 33:51It was blowing up by initial reaction.
- 33:54Where is this? The Domino. because, I think
- 34:01we've been kind of flirting with that.
- 34:04What's the Domino that's going to really throw complete and
- 34:08utter turmoil into what we know? Of call of as college football,
- 34:14right? You know, we saw we thought it
- 34:18might be something that when Texas and Oklahoma made the SEC
- 34:21mood, was it going to be an immediate domino effect there?
- 34:25You know, as soon as I saw this news I was like, is this is this
- 34:28the one where they're all going to topple?
- 34:30Or is this more of a? Just the Big Ten is getting into
- 34:35you know one of the three best media markets in the country and
- 34:39these two schools are trying to reap the benefit of Big Ten.
- 34:42Media money. Yeah.
- 34:45Well - and it still to her is still too early to tell at this
- 34:49point, but I mean I think that that's where I was at the gate
- 34:51is that is this is this, the Domino that's going to lead to a
- 34:56brand new era of college football?
- 35:00The New Order a college football.
- 35:02And it's looking like very well, it could be because I think now
- 35:06we're at the dawn of the super conferences and my first thing
- 35:10was it was a little bit of shock to say a that is a long travel.
- 35:14That is two teams who were used to nice weather football going
- 35:20to pay places. Basically.
- 35:22After mid-october, there is no nice weather football.
- 35:26No anywhere in the Big Ten anywhere.
- 35:29So that sort of, you know, little shocked but it's like,
- 35:33now you have you look at the SEC and you look at the Big Ten
- 35:37there at 16, There are 16, the SEC roughly stretches from the
- 35:43coast of South Carolina into the plains of Oklahoma.
- 35:47And now the Big Ten is stretching literally from New
- 35:49York to LA. And, you know, we sit here and
- 35:55the question is, how much more movements coming a, how much
- 35:58more movement is coming? Because I think the one reason
- 36:02this move was made was because the pac-10 or Pac-12.
- 36:07Meteorites, are up and basically 2023.
- 36:11And obviously, there's an ounce if they're going to the table
- 36:14and are trying to negotiate a deal, but how much more movement
- 36:18could we see now there are reports that the Big Ten doesn't
- 36:22want you dubber organ. And the Big 12 trying to
- 36:25convince PAC 12 teams to come the acc's not saying today.
- 36:29Damn word, which scares the shit out of me.
- 36:31You have tech fans left and right screaming.
- 36:33We need to bleep and get on it with Bayonne calls, don't fuck
- 36:38us. Yeah, and and all of that is
- 36:41right, right? Like right now.
- 36:42No one knows where we're heading and if I'm if I'm Wit Babcock,
- 36:47I'm I'm game. Thering the shit out of this
- 36:50thing. Yes, I'm calling the Big Ten.
- 36:54I'm calling the SEC but I'm also calling the ACC E office and get
- 37:00on the horn with Phyllis time saying, you need to add some
- 37:05teams and get get us. Some better meteorites on this
- 37:10deal. So, we have a little bit more
- 37:12firewall if this is going to carry forward, but I'm
- 37:15definitely hedging. I'm definitely seeing if the ACC
- 37:19ends up, getting blown up. If we start getting poached, you
- 37:22know, two three big teams on the front end.
- 37:25I mean that that's I'm looking to get out at that point.
- 37:30Yeah, if you're losing, if you're losing Miami, you're
- 37:33losing FSU, you're losing Clemson, you're losing the UNC?
- 37:38You need to go ahead and have a plan in place because you don't
- 37:42want to be that, you know, the guy holding the bag at the end.
- 37:46Know you don't. Now, luckily for Tech in this
- 37:49sense is, you know, we do have a big footprint.
- 37:55It in some major media markets, I don't I don't give a shit.
- 37:59What the media says? Well Maryland's a no Northern
- 38:02Virginia DC in the southern part of Maryland is not Maryland
- 38:07country. The TV sets, you can turn it on
- 38:10and see, Marilyn ain't no more fucking body watching, Maryland
- 38:14football up there. So for me, that's baby state.
- 38:22For me though, if you're the SEC and you want to get into a top
- 38:2410 Market, where your best bet they're a, if you take a look at
- 38:30the long-term history of the football program, you feel it's
- 38:34going to be competitive, you know, we show up for games,
- 38:36we're not going to be, you're not showing us on ESPN on a
- 38:40Saturday night and it's, you know, a half full Stadium.
- 38:43That's not gonna happen. So we have some things going for
- 38:47us. It's also that value.
- 38:48Which are buddy. Dr. Jeremy Let's put up the day
- 38:52which I think shocked me and you talking about this is a little
- 38:55few years older but Tech essentially athletic department
- 38:59being at valued at two hundred eighty million dollars.
- 39:02Which I think as being you look kind of shocked that we're ahead
- 39:05of some people. We did not expect to be ahead of
- 39:09ya and I think that's, you know, our brand is taking a little bit
- 39:12of a hit since those numbers came out.
- 39:14So it's probably not 100% indicative but it's also not
- 39:18fall off the map either know. You know, that had us number
- 39:22three in the conference. In terms of valuation, I
- 39:25wouldn't put us any lower than probably five since then.
- 39:29Yeah, you know, maybe a year, UNC jumps us, maybe he wasn't
- 39:35was right. Who was the weather with right?
- 39:37Right below. Us, was it Louisville?
- 39:41Hold on. Let me get that.
- 39:42I remember who it was UNC. Would have.
- 39:44Had to make up 120 million dollars?
- 39:46Yeah, I knew they were pretty and let's be honest, I mean, in
- 39:50terms of Revenue, Jordan brand and basketball is where their
- 39:55valuation is. They don't really have a brand
- 39:58in football. So if we're talking football, I
- 40:02mean UNC is UNC. They've got they've got the
- 40:05Jordan brand, they've got basketball.
- 40:07They've got their a you status. That's going to help them in a
- 40:09Big Ten type negotiation but I don't think they really carry
- 40:13enough weight in terms of negotiation with the SEC.
- 40:17Especially since when you get a Virginia Tech because of where
- 40:21the alumni are, you're getting that that Nova, you're getting
- 40:2680 for and 757 but you're also getting A lot in the RDU area,
- 40:31you get a lot in the Charlotte area.
- 40:33We talked about it earlier, getting a lot in the Atlanta
- 40:35area. So we've got a presence pretty
- 40:39much up down. We talked about it wherever the
- 40:42Robbie throughout the 40 Corridor throughout the 85
- 40:45Corridor. Well, you know, up 95 towards
- 40:49the DC area, it's really, we've got that type of presence and we
- 40:53got that type of brand and travel that I think is going to
- 40:57help us long term, especially if we're talking as You see versus
- 41:00Big Ten, the third place team back in.
- 41:04When that thing was come out, it was Georgia Tech at 215 million,
- 41:09okay? Okay.
- 41:10And they probably probably suffered some hits since then as
- 41:13well, Dave, definitely suffered some head since then a couple of
- 41:18the ones we were like ahead of that kind of, you know, shocked
- 41:22me a little like, Kentucky being in the SEC.
- 41:25Having a superior, you know, an Elite basketball program being
- 41:29above Them. Especially, since Stoops has
- 41:31been there, really elevating their football program that kind
- 41:34of shocked me a little bit but let's let's let's flip a little
- 41:38bit here. Brian.
- 41:40Can we say who's really driving this?
- 41:43Who's really driving? Why these moves are being made,
- 41:47because I really don't think Greg Sankey or Kevin up in the
- 41:50Big Ten or the guys driving this.
- 41:52It's ESPN and Disney and it's Fox TV Executives.
- 41:57Now, they are driving this because they're pretty, they're
- 42:01presenting. Here's here's what could happen.
- 42:04If you, if you scoop up these two markets here's what can
- 42:08happen for you and then that's presented and then that's
- 42:11driving, everything else. Well, but but what did I say to
- 42:16you? Earlier on, if you take USC out
- 42:18of the Pac-12, their negotiations on their next TV
- 42:22dealer going to be significantly lower depth are going to be
- 42:26higher than what they were 11 years ago.
- 42:27But they're not going to be astronomically higher because
- 42:30you took the biggest brand. Fox and ESPN benefit off that
- 42:35and fox and ESPN, and also benefit off of.
- 42:39Yeah, you're adding USC, but we're already given you guys
- 42:42close to 50 million of Team. It might be worth, you know, an
- 42:46extra three or four million. It's not worth an extra x amount
- 42:50of dollars. It would be out if the Pac-12
- 42:53had them. Yeah.
- 42:54Yeah. They're coming out better on
- 42:57their end in terms of net between the two TV deals.
- 43:00Yes. Yeah.
- 43:01And you know you get a conference that gets into
- 43:06another Market. Just happens to be one of the
- 43:08largest markets in the country. They are already in.
- 43:12You just get to absorb it into your biggest contract instead of
- 43:15having to pay another substantial contract, that's
- 43:19where my mind is, even the Texas.
- 43:21Can Oklahoma thing that was ESPN's absorbing this into their
- 43:25biggest contract. Yeah.
- 43:28And you can say oh Texas can Oklahoma move the needle?
- 43:31Know they move the needle for the Big 12 they do.
- 43:33It's not going to. It's not going to bother this.
- 43:35It's not going to get the same type of bump in the SEC.
- 43:38Exactly the same type of bump in the big tent know, so whatever.
- 43:43They're bumping up on the SEC and Big 10 deals, it's getting
- 43:47dropped off on the other side. So exactly, it's just not,
- 43:52they're making more money off of it and that's where you can
- 43:55really see it driving now because the In is, if the pac-10
- 43:59of the Pac-12. They go ESPN's consolidating
- 44:03debt. Yep.
- 44:04That's exactly what they're doing.
- 44:06But if they keep these two conferences alive which now
- 44:10that's going to be a thing for ESPN to play because content is
- 44:14what drives them right. If they screw up and kill a
- 44:17conference, they're sort of killing themselves and people
- 44:21say well they have the big ones but you're still Killing Revenue
- 44:28in some way because and now at this point or that were they
- 44:31saying we've built such a monster where we can't show all
- 44:37the games we want to show, but now they are potentially
- 44:40diluting. What product is left because
- 44:45they might kill a conference and then those games matter less.
- 44:48So you know, it's definitely a risky move but I, you know, I
- 44:52think long term it's going to probably be Find for them
- 44:55because I don't think I think there's there's another in game
- 45:00that the conference's are playing with this.
- 45:04That we'll talk about here in a little bit.
- 45:07Yeah, big in games. Now, it came out today, the
- 45:10loose agreement between and bron bron allow Brian titling.
- 45:16This episode loose agreement, the loose agreement between
- 45:19discussion between the Pac-12 and the ACC.
- 45:24If you're the Pac-12 and if you're the ACC, do you almost
- 45:30just say effort. Let's let you know, use your
- 45:34brains would be as follows this would be your top 10 brands and
- 45:37this isn't to me, this is not a bad look.
- 45:41Virginia Tech, Clemson, Florida State, Miami Oregon, u-dub,
- 45:48Stanford, Arizona, State, and I'm going to give you tall
- 45:53because Utah's what they've done the last five years, going
- 45:55through a Rose Bowl. Yeah.
- 45:57That mean they've had they've had waves before too so that
- 46:00they're not exactly a you know a brand that nobody knows about
- 46:04but could those 10 teams carry a 28 2014.
- 46:11Conference Jesus Christ. Could that carry could you just
- 46:16say we're merging, we're going to have an east and west.
- 46:20We're gonna have a championship game.
- 46:21We're going to have some crumbs, we're going to have some
- 46:22cross-country rivalries. Could it I'll say this the Bold
- 46:27stroke of fully combining his no dumber than this loose
- 46:30partnership idea playing a championship game.
- 46:33So I mean if you're going to go all in go the fuck all in and
- 46:37make it so a it's harder for these teams individually to back
- 46:44out for some for greener pastures and number to get your
- 46:48media deal in place where Are you have that Juggernaut in
- 46:51place? Right?
- 46:52Because right now what the SEC and what the Big Ten have that,
- 46:56no other conference has is clout and firewalls.
- 47:02Yeah, they're not they're not going to get poached because of
- 47:05their clout and because of the firewalls that they have in
- 47:07place and that's why when we talked last year, about the Big
- 47:11Ten and the ACC and the Pac-12, you know, look them in the eye
- 47:18deal. Whatever the hell that shit was
- 47:20I'm telling you got to you got to know that the big Tim has the
- 47:26leverage in all of this shit like you're making the most
- 47:29money if you're not, if you're not putting something In writing
- 47:33ACC and Pac-12 about to get fucked and what happened?
- 47:36They got fucked. Yeah that they they they've been
- 47:39put on alert and now somebody's got to do something.
- 47:43So either either you're going to slowly watch your conference
- 47:47crumble true or going to get around the yeah, there's going
- 47:52to be a loophole in the in the grant of rights at some point.
- 47:55The grant of rights firewall is going to get busted or the eight
- 47:59or the, or the SEC or the Big Ten Or just going to say, Screw
- 48:04will for the next five years. We'll just eat the 70 million
- 48:09and they and and schools that already have the money to do
- 48:14some of this stuff. They know long term.
- 48:16They're going to come out better so they might whether two or
- 48:19three years of short-term pain. Well I'm looking at FSU in
- 48:22particular Well, because FS you can probably handle it.
- 48:28FSU. Well, I'm going to, I'm going to
- 48:30say this if you want me to be straight up with you.
- 48:32I mean this is also a move especially the Virginia Tech
- 48:38were to go to the Big Ten. This would be a move for, not
- 48:44only Athletics but academics. So the question is, would
- 48:48someone like Tim sayings? Be willing to go out there and
- 48:54say you know, we're going to do this move with it.
- 48:59And what we're going to do is we have an endowment, right?
- 49:04How much you think to Virginia Tech endowment is?
- 49:08I do not know you might look too close.
- 49:11It's almost okay, Billy. He might just say, we're just
- 49:15screw the grants of, right? We're going to, we're going to
- 49:17take care of ourselves because we're looking at this as a, not
- 49:21only a athletic move, but this is a massive move for our
- 49:25research University. To be partnered with the Big Ten
- 49:29school, right? Yeah.
- 49:33And the question is, how close are we to that AAU membership
- 49:36threshold? You know, it's mostly based on
- 49:40the research side of things, it's hard to get that threshold
- 49:45without a fully-fledged. Medical school, it's hard to.
- 49:51It's hard to get there just because of how much research is
- 49:53done on that side of the the aisle but it's definitely
- 49:58possible. There are several schools
- 50:01Georgia Tech for One. They don't have a medical school
- 50:04that that are a you schools, but again, that threshold is much
- 50:09harder to meet without that. That element how close we are.
- 50:13I could say, I know that was a goal of sayings when he took
- 50:17over was to get, Virginia Tech to AA you status, but we're not
- 50:23there and I don't know how close we are and I don't know if we've
- 50:26got enough time to get there before more of these dominoes
- 50:29start to fall. So, that will be, you know, some
- 50:33of, the more interesting things. We've already mentioned the
- 50:39firewall, the ACC does have the best, but I think eventually
- 50:42people get around it and or universities will just say we're
- 50:45going to eat it because long term, it's going to work for us.
- 50:49Yeah, of the other three conferences that are potentially
- 50:52getting poached ACC as the best firewall.
- 50:54But they also have the one that probably should get wrote.
- 51:00Somebody Yeah, exactly exactly. And you know packed will
- 51:07probably the most poachable because right now they've got a
- 51:11expiring, meteorites deal. So somewhere in the middle there
- 51:17is the Big 12 Yeah. Well the Big 12 had their big
- 51:22two coached I don't think anybody's poaching.
- 51:24Anybody out of the V12 yet. Not unless we're going unless
- 51:28they're going to 24. Alright, let's end it with this
- 51:33because we've already talked about what could happen to the
- 51:35ACC. Do you think the Hokies are safe
- 51:38one way or the other? I don't feel 100% safe just
- 51:47because I'm not sure if we're in a position where we're going to
- 51:52dictate the terms and be as proactive as we need to be to
- 51:57get this done. That's my concern.
- 51:59I'm not saying that with isn't capable, I'm saying, I don't
- 52:02know if you know, I think Whitney knows what needs.
- 52:05What needs to happen. I don't know if he can get us
- 52:08there. We'll see because there's a lot
- 52:12of moving Parts here. And I think he Ands that but I
- 52:15don't know if it comes down to the ACC isn't taking the steps
- 52:19we need to if he's going to push hard enough for that SEC offer.
- 52:24Yeah and I don't know if sayings is going to come off the money
- 52:27to take that. If granted right of Rights is
- 52:29still in place. So there's still those pieces in
- 52:32place that you know potentially could hamstring.
- 52:35I moved to the SEC and yeah, the fear is and I think long-term
- 52:43What's gonna devalue? Virginia Tech's brand more is
- 52:48not going to the SEC and having you know, a few years where
- 52:53we're only winning 45 games, what's going to devalue?
- 52:56Virginia Tech's brand is playing football.
- 52:59That doesn't fucking matter. So, we better not be in a
- 53:03situation where you get left behind.
- 53:05That's the big piece. It's the the getting left behind
- 53:09and that's where in this situation again, if if, if the
- 53:15acc's not trying to push buttons, trying to push hard to
- 53:18get, essentially, making itself not Untouchable, but one of
- 53:22those Conferences. Where you can't look away.
- 53:29That's, that's your issue, right?
- 53:31Yep. You don't want to be a
- 53:32conference that you can look away at.
- 53:36And right now like the big 12, think about it.
- 53:40You can look away. I don't think the Pac-12 there
- 53:44yet because I think the organ and govern a couple of those
- 53:46schools can still hold your. I also luckily you know, USC and
- 53:53UCLA have been just shit programs last five years, they
- 53:57haven't been that good. So I don't want to be in a
- 54:00situation where our biggest matchups of the year or Wake
- 54:03Forest in Boston, College and maybe pain.
- 54:06Oh no, that I don't want to be in that situation.
- 54:09That's not what I, that's not worth the price of admission, if
- 54:15we're not playing. Number one games, that matter
- 54:18against Regional opponents, consistently, I don't want it.
- 54:23If we're not playing for a conference Championship, that
- 54:30gives us the opportunity to make the college football playoff.
- 54:33I don't want it, I don't want conference games against ODU and
- 54:37Liberty and Potentially down the road.
- 54:40J mu. I don't want that.
- 54:43Virginia Tech needs to play major.
- 54:47College football, Virginia, Tech needs to play.
- 54:50Basically what we've dealt our whole entire fandom, starting in
- 54:54the early 1990s. Big Time games all year long and
- 55:01they have to make that decision right now between what Babcock
- 55:05sayings. And even Jim Phillips of how are
- 55:07you going to keep this thing going?
- 55:09And if you're Virginia Tech in the ACC is not moving, or
- 55:13they're moving at a slow pace, you just say screw it.
- 55:16All right? Well before we get into looking
- 55:19at the future ACC schedule, which might not be the future
- 55:22ACC schedule and are going to click pause.
- 55:26As for Meyer digital partners because we take a quick break,
- 55:31we'd like to tell you about getting your free website report
- 55:34from our digital partner, Grassroots, digital marketing
- 55:36Studio. They'll tell you how your
- 55:37website ranks on Google on-site, SEO and social media.
- 55:41No commitment to buy anything. You can get your free report by
- 55:44visiting. Grassroots digital studio.com
- 55:47forward slash free Dash website Dash report now back to the
- 55:51episode. All right so before we actually
- 55:54hit the Schedule that was released which we've got our own
- 55:59feelings about there was an announcement.
- 56:01ACC headquarters is moving from Greensboro to Charlotte, they've
- 56:05committed 15 million bucks. Let's just keep it in,
- 56:09Greensboro and commit the 15 million dollars to actually grow
- 56:12in a conference and making sure you're alive in five years.
- 56:17Yeah, the hot, the hindsight of that.
- 56:19That move definitely is bad optics for sure.
- 56:23Well the only upside is now you're at least have a major
- 56:25Hub. You can fly.
- 56:26Hi in and out of your trying to get these deals done.
- 56:29There's your upside right there. All right.
- 56:31So Brian the big change and have been discussed and finally goes
- 56:36through. The ACC goes starting in 2023.
- 56:40So they really quick turnaround to a division 'less ACC.
- 56:47There is no definite Landing, there's no more Coastal.
- 56:50Praise the lord. We got rid of coastal.
- 56:58Rest in peace Coastal chaos that at that after that's after
- 57:05January or after dutremble yeah. Sorry.
- 57:08We're having we're having an early ready to send off party
- 57:11for the coastal chaos. We are currently in the wake of
- 57:14coastal chaos. With so but yeah, Coast.
- 57:17Okay up this year. But you know the Visions are
- 57:21gone which is great. And essentially the top two
- 57:24teams are going to play for the title which you've got to love
- 57:28because if you can remember, everybody put your hats on.
- 57:32If you can remember back in the early part of the ACC when
- 57:34Virginia Tech came on. There Will several years
- 57:37Virginia Tech was legitimately the second best team in the
- 57:39conference, but we didn't win the coastal so we didn't get to
- 57:42go play in the championship game.
- 57:46In the same way, in both couple years where like Miami was the
- 57:49second best, but we beat them, and we got to go.
- 57:53So I like that, just in general because you're likely going to
- 57:56get, you know, either a an unbeaten, a one loss.
- 58:00And at worst a to Lost team in the championship game, which is
- 58:05a pleasurable. Hopefully, the Hokies are there
- 58:08a lot pleasurable thing to happen.
- 58:13Yeah, I mean I like this better. You get, you get the two best.
- 58:15I think that's important. As you said we've had several
- 58:18years, especially early in the first, you know, seven to ten
- 58:23years at the Hokies were in the, in the conference where, you
- 58:27know, we were the, we were the second best team in the
- 58:29conference and sometimes didn't play for the championship.
- 58:34A lot of times, it takes that imbalance of the, of the
- 58:38divisions out of play. So I'm looking forward to that
- 58:43aspect of it. The matchups.
- 58:47There were some when there was some winds and some losses with
- 58:50it with those matchups though. Well, let's talk about the big
- 58:54win. The big win is literally every
- 58:57four years, you're going to play every team home in a way that
- 59:01every four years. So that means every basically,
- 59:06every other year were either getting Florida State, Clemson
- 59:09or Miami at home. Or Louisville at home, obviously
- 59:13UVA every other year that's the big benefit because we had not
- 59:19played Clemson. We haven't been to Death Valley
- 59:22since 06 or 07, was it, 07 the year?
- 59:26Just we scored like nine different ways and they're still
- 59:30trying to figure out what happened.
- 59:32They're still running down the hill.
- 59:33The wrong way? Yeah, we only played them at
- 59:36home. What once?
- 59:39Twice twice. I don't think I think twice 11
- 59:43and 17 or 16. That sounds right now.
- 59:50Every other year Florida State similar, And what does that do?
- 59:56Well for the ACC that gives you your Prime Brands playing each
- 1:00:00other all the time. Every year you get to Circle
- 1:00:03matchups for Virginia Tech fans. It's every year there is going
- 1:00:08to be a massive, massive gain on campus Which that's, I mean,
- 1:00:14that in itself is a big deal because it's really going to be
- 1:00:18a sellout, which, you know, for years.
- 1:00:21It was, but you're going to have more eyes on Virginia Tech than
- 1:00:27a normal week, because let's be honest, playing, not knocking,
- 1:00:31but playing Georgia. Tech the first weekend in
- 1:00:33October at home versus playing Florida.
- 1:00:36State is a hell of a lot of difference.
- 1:00:39Yeah, absolutely. Absolutely.
- 1:00:43But I'm looking forward to some of these, especially getting
- 1:00:46getting to see teams every other year.
- 1:00:51That's big. That's big because that that,
- 1:00:53that hammers home, you know, the whole, the market play that
- 1:00:56we're talking about when you have divisions, a lot of times,
- 1:00:59you know, you when you try to recruit within that footprint.
- 1:01:03Yeah. Okay.
- 1:01:04They're on our schedule with their, on our schedule.
- 1:01:06Maybe sometimes once in a in a recruit's entire time on campus.
- 1:01:14Like, yeah, that make that make some of that a little bit
- 1:01:17difficult, especially for those, those cross division opponents,
- 1:01:21whether it be Clemson. I know Louisville, we had a big
- 1:01:24span where we didn't play them. And they still haven't come to
- 1:01:29Blacksburg, have they? I don't think so.
- 1:01:33They're back on coded year, but they have not come to Blacksburg
- 1:01:36and Syracuse first time coming to Blacksburg was back in 21.
- 1:01:41Yeah, I mean, that's asinine, that's asinine and that goes
- 1:01:44away. Thank God.
- 1:01:45But let's go to the one. Everybody wants to talk about
- 1:01:50the Lock 3, the lock, you know, block 3 and I think we all
- 1:01:57anticipated UVA. I think we all did.
- 1:02:01We knew? We were getting UVA.
- 1:02:03We thought we were getting someone else that we didn't get
- 1:02:07and thankfully we didn't get somebody that we thought we
- 1:02:09might get, we didn't get Miami, instead we get pit.
- 1:02:15Um-hmm. And then instead of BC we got
- 1:02:20wait. So, as far as traveling for your
- 1:02:24every three-year game, you don't have to travel that far.
- 1:02:28But let me press this question to you, Brian.
- 1:02:31Do you think that we stood on the table so hard that we're not
- 1:02:35playing BC every year anymore? They jerk.
- 1:02:37Miami away from us. Like, I don't, I think that was
- 1:02:40the devil's bargain. I think, I think we said we're
- 1:02:43not playing BC every year and they said, all right, you're not
- 1:02:46getting Miami. Okay, hold on.
- 1:02:48Or did the person at the ACC office?
- 1:02:51Go on a bender in, screw up, Louisville and hours.
- 1:02:55Because if you look at theirs I mean that's yeah.
- 1:02:59GT Miami UVA? Yeah, I mean that does sound
- 1:03:02like slightly more more VT aligned than then what we got.
- 1:03:09I mean you know you get You get your, you get your home state
- 1:03:14route with what we got to get your home state rival.
- 1:03:17You technically get your closest ACC opponent and then you get a
- 1:03:22former Big East opponent on it and then you'd so.
- 1:03:27And then and the closest, former Big East opponent, you get, and
- 1:03:31you get for a time there in the early 2000s, miss you thousands
- 1:03:34probably one of the better ACC One of the better ACC rivalries
- 1:03:41was the tech tech rivalry really from the early 2000s.
- 1:03:45You're okay with it, but wake should be Miami.
- 1:03:49Listen, everybody had to lay on the sword somewhere.
- 1:03:51The other. Well, maybe with the yeah, you
- 1:03:55know. But for Florida State got this
- 1:03:58one in there. We're getting there.
- 1:04:03Controversial opinion, that some people would at you hard.
- 1:04:07When you basically said, And say it.
- 1:04:11If it took losing Miami to get BC off our every year schedule,
- 1:04:16it was worth. So be it.
- 1:04:18We will still play. Be who will still playing Miami
- 1:04:222 out of every four and I'll tell you why I'll tell you why.
- 1:04:25So number and it's not just I want to avoid a tougher
- 1:04:29opponent. But when you, when you look at
- 1:04:34the games with BC, getting rid of BC is more important because
- 1:04:38be C is a zero benefit game for Virginia Tech.
- 1:04:45It's a big travel game. Whether you know, whether we're
- 1:04:49going to play or they're coming us, it's a big travel.
- 1:04:53And it's a game that for Virginia Tech.
- 1:04:56If we win it, we were supposed to, and if we lose it, we're
- 1:05:00ass. It's not a game is that same
- 1:05:05with wait. But we're not traveling seven at
- 1:05:0978 hours to do that. We're going an hour and a half
- 1:05:14on a bus. Okay, but it's still a loss to a
- 1:05:21lesser opponent. I mean Bond.
- 1:05:23And Brian says, he doesn't care travel, but I think the other
- 1:05:27point we were talking about the other thing about playing and
- 1:05:29wake is where you're playing in a prime recruiting ground that
- 1:05:33you can get kids from the 336 from the Charlotte area.
- 1:05:38And you can get them to come to that home game or that away
- 1:05:41game, which is going to be the honest.
- 1:05:43Truth is the first away game at wake.
- 1:05:46It's going to be about 40% maroon and orange.
- 1:05:49JH that we guarding use that. That's probably I think wasted
- 1:05:52on the table for us, because I think waiting you that if they
- 1:05:55could get Virginia Tech, they would have one game.
- 1:05:58Every two years that they were get full capacity, they were
- 1:06:01going to make a boatload of money, all that game, because
- 1:06:04they knew where they're located, a ton of hokey fans will go to
- 1:06:09that game because it's going to be reasonably priced tickets.
- 1:06:11Easy to get in easy to get out. It's the one game like when they
- 1:06:16play in Sea state, It's probably the only other consistent game
- 1:06:21that they play that they can pack the stadium like that.
- 1:06:25Yeah, unless they're playing like a ranked opponent like
- 1:06:28Clemson or something like that. Yeah, 100 buddy, but in terms of
- 1:06:32throat, rankings at the window, throw, whatever the current
- 1:06:35records are out the window, Virginia Tech when they play
- 1:06:38Wake, they're going to pack that stadium.
- 1:06:39And when NC State plays wake, they're going to pack that state
- 1:06:43true. I'm seeing Robbie put in here.
- 1:06:46He'd rather have the recruiting area and I mean we're going to
- 1:06:48be in Florida twice, we're going to be in Florida every year
- 1:06:51anyway, so between Florida State and Miami.
- 1:06:54So That is what it is. They're all right.
- 1:06:57So who do you think got screwed? In this scenario.
- 1:07:04Florida State. I know I talked about earlier,
- 1:07:05but they got the shaft buddy, Florida State out there, playing
- 1:07:09Clemson, Miami, and having to go to the Carrier Dome.
- 1:07:12Every other fucking year is bananas.
- 1:07:16I mean, is this just like a way they're going to keep Florida
- 1:07:19State down. Like, you guys are never going
- 1:07:21to come back. We're going to we're going to
- 1:07:23give you pay just as just as Miami might be back with crystal
- 1:07:27ball and you get, you get that, you get Clemson and then you get
- 1:07:32to go. The Carrier Dome every other
- 1:07:34year which holy hey every one of those ranked teams lose in the
- 1:07:39Carrier Dome Clemson loss in the Carrier Dome during one of their
- 1:07:43playoff run years. Let's say we took a shit in the
- 1:07:46Carrier Dome. We can 2016 and years before
- 1:07:51that that place is just terrible to play in but you know, you
- 1:07:55know, who else? I think kind of got a little
- 1:07:57shafted. Was Miami because they Pawn
- 1:08:02Boston College off on my hey, hey you that's cool furthest
- 1:08:10south. We're going to send you furthest
- 1:08:11North in the conference And and same rules apply to them.
- 1:08:18It's a game that they get all that travel in and if they win
- 1:08:22they were supposed to and if they lose they shit the bed.
- 1:08:25Best part. Here's the best part about it.
- 1:08:27Miami is going to become the red bandana game for PC, right?
- 1:08:32That market down right now, Miami will become the red
- 1:08:35bandana game or BC every year the so on a Friday night when
- 1:08:41they actually get 80% of the stadium to turn out.
- 1:08:45And the crowd is electric. Hey, here comes my hammy in.
- 1:08:48There are 14 hour flight from South Florida.
- 1:08:54So, you know, I think they got screwed just as much, but look
- 1:08:57at it. The rest.
- 1:08:58The rest is pretty regionally balanced.
- 1:09:01They really took care of the Carolina schools.
- 1:09:04Just, you know, I mean, North Carolina literary.
- 1:09:07I'm shot there. Well, actually do got even
- 1:09:13better, dude. Literally doesn't have Leave the
- 1:09:15state North Carolina's. First trip, is up to UVA, so,
- 1:09:22but overall, you look at it, they kept, it kind of regional,
- 1:09:26they kept the northern teams all together.
- 1:09:28And as much as we want to get upset, Braun, you know, I don't
- 1:09:33think anybody else got truly screwed.
- 1:09:35It's either. OK.
- 1:09:36Or best like, it's us. It's a push.
- 1:09:41Oh man. But Do you feel like anybody got
- 1:09:46truly rewarded? Like hey, here you go.
- 1:09:52I mean, maybe Duke is really the only one who can really say just
- 1:09:55because they are sticking 100% in state, with their, it's Duke,
- 1:10:00but it's Duke. I mean, I don't know if that's
- 1:10:02going to really, really matter. I think BBC kind of got fucked a
- 1:10:09little bit of as well for for talking about another third, if
- 1:10:12you want to put in there with Miami Pitt and Syracuse that's
- 1:10:17its regionally. Okay with them other than Miami
- 1:10:20but it's still, that's a bad draw for a middle-of-the-road.
- 1:10:24ACC team. You're supposed to beat
- 1:10:30Syracuse. When you go to the Carrier Dome,
- 1:10:32we supposed to compete with pit and lose to Miami.
- 1:10:35Yep. In Reality is they're going to
- 1:10:37probably lose more than a few games in the Carrier Dome there.
- 1:10:40Lose one of the few in the Carrier Dome and they're
- 1:10:42probably going to lose most of those to Miami.
- 1:10:46So yeah. So I mean you could make the
- 1:10:50argument that Maybe UNC got favorable because they got Duke
- 1:10:57instead of wait and you know, they'll get there, they got the
- 1:11:07whole thing is, how many times did they played State?
- 1:11:10It's like they played State. It's so few is so fuse
- 1:11:13considering how close they are, how close they are.
- 1:11:16Now the bigger issue with the bigger issue with Carolina
- 1:11:19playing state is State, probably going to wax them more in a few
- 1:11:24times because obviously So, I hope you might even say hi.
- 1:11:29See, I open sea State. Puts puts the fucking screws to
- 1:11:32him. Well, I hope everybody can put
- 1:11:34the screws to them. All right, let's look here on,
- 1:11:37future schedules. We looked at 23, 24, 25 and 26,
- 1:11:41and there is one scheduled that just it.
- 1:11:45Let me and Brian's eyes up. And if you are there, go to the
- 1:11:48ACC page and go look at 2024. Because man, I mean so you get
- 1:11:58Clemson at home. Awesome.
- 1:12:01We at Louis Vuitton, which I was kind of hoping we'd get
- 1:12:05Louisville instead of pit because at least their fan base,
- 1:12:09you know, they actually have a living breathing fan base.
- 1:12:13We would go to their games, their side sparsely is like, you
- 1:12:16know, exactly, third filled in the hind Stadium.
- 1:12:21Yep. So Georgia, Tech Commonwealth
- 1:12:25Compass at home that day at year.
- 1:12:26And then, even though these aren't the most exciting Road
- 1:12:29games, Duke-carolina pit and Wake Forest.
- 1:12:33If you are a Virginia Tech fan. If you want to purchase all ACC
- 1:12:38games this year, you would not have to step on a plane to go to
- 1:12:42those games. Then you're getting the biggest
- 1:12:45dog at home. I would love to see when that
- 1:12:49game is going to be. But that's like that's what
- 1:12:54we're talking about. You get Clemson at home in 2024.
- 1:12:57It's also going to be year three of prai or we should start
- 1:13:00seeing some Corner get turned. Yeah.
- 1:13:03So I mean with that with the combination of it, somewhat weak
- 1:13:09and Regional away schedule. You get Clemson to where you can
- 1:13:14showcase, what you got, you get UVA at home and your next
- 1:13:18toughest competition in the home schedule.
- 1:13:20Is Louisville. That's going to be a year where
- 1:13:25if the Hokies can turn a turn a corner.
- 1:13:28They've got some potential to to really get, you know, plus 8
- 1:13:33plus 9 potentially 10 wins that year.
- 1:13:38Yeah. And that's the biggie but then
- 1:13:41you like look at like 20 25, we're getting Florida State at
- 1:13:44home and we're on the road in Miami.
- 1:13:47Yep. 20:26 and NC State. Yeah.
- 1:13:50And NC State Miami at home Clemson on the road.
- 1:13:56And this is really why it was done because If you take a look
- 1:14:02at some of these schedules and you know look it like let's look
- 1:14:06at 20 25 again and let's look at Florida State.
- 1:14:08They're playing Miami. They play Clemson.
- 1:14:11We know and they play us. Those that's three massive
- 1:14:15matchups and we looked at ours already for 25 words, Florida
- 1:14:18State and Miami and NC State on the road.
- 1:14:22What you're doing is for the ACC when they do that schedule, you
- 1:14:27could literally schedule a significantly big matchup every
- 1:14:31single week all throughout the year and put your biggest fans
- 1:14:35in the best spots in spotlights. Put your best traditions in
- 1:14:40spotlights, but your best stadiums and spotlights, that's
- 1:14:43Why this was done, that's why it was done because you because you
- 1:14:47because you know, we saw what was it, 16 we played Clemson
- 1:14:51that game pulled like a 396, so almost four million people.
- 1:14:55Watch that game. And for an ACC team, that's
- 1:15:00huge. You know the SEC usually pulls
- 1:15:04about six and a half on Saturday, afternoons to say
- 1:15:07you're pulling for that's that's a massive number.
- 1:15:11And now you're saying you're putting all these programs and I
- 1:15:14think that's why we were left out Because I think they know we
- 1:15:18draw eyes and if you leave Miami off our schedule, Clemson
- 1:15:22Florida, State and Miami are going to be constantly every
- 1:15:25year and usually there's going to be two a year. for one of the
- 1:15:30most passionate fan bases to play one of the biggest
- 1:15:32opponents, very true head throat.
- 1:15:37Very sure through. That was one of our Facebook.
- 1:15:42Watchers tonight. Jacob.
- 1:15:43Uh, shoutout. Yeah, and we had talked about
- 1:15:46that when we were going through because we said the out of
- 1:15:49conference lined up, pretty nicely to because the two
- 1:15:51toughest out of conferences were at home as well.
- 1:15:55That year. So it does, it does line up Yeah
- 1:16:06that's going to be on at home and then it's Vandy and
- 1:16:14Nashville ODU and significantly favorable that if you know 2024
- 1:16:25could be a really big building year but let's talk about this.
- 1:16:29What do you think? I've given you my opinion.
- 1:16:32What do you think this means for Hoagie football and and the prai
- 1:16:35ERA with this change? I think it's good because again,
- 1:16:39you talking about getting games in the footprint more
- 1:16:43consistently, I think it's going to be a good recruiting tool.
- 1:16:45I think it's going to be good to not have to play the same
- 1:16:50opponents as many same opponents every year that's going to help
- 1:16:56with you know in terms of scouting and things like that.
- 1:16:58It's going to be a little bit harder for for folks to get a
- 1:17:02hold on what Virginia Tech's trying to do.
- 1:17:04So coaching will definitely separate the cream and I think
- 1:17:08we got a good a good set of guys on that front at this point.
- 1:17:11So and I think the way that the schedule is lining up especially
- 1:17:15for 2024 is really going to benefit that kind of turning
- 1:17:20point for prize he's getting his guys in as he's gotten the Guys
- 1:17:25are already on campus establishing the system, they
- 1:17:28know the ins and outs. They know how to kind of run it
- 1:17:31like clockwork, right? So that's going to be that
- 1:17:34Turning Point year. I feel like and it comes a time
- 1:17:38where our schedule is lining up to not only have some some good
- 1:17:42Marquee matchups but also in terms of travel and strength to
- 1:17:47beat to be somewhat favorable as well.
- 1:17:50It's very true. And you know, something else, I
- 1:17:52was just thinking about here 2024 because of the weird years
- 1:17:57of the covid years, you know, still going to be eligible.
- 1:18:01There's a parent Wells. Hey, potentially a three-year
- 1:18:08starting quarterback in the year, where everything's
- 1:18:11implemented a guy, who's shown some promise.
- 1:18:13Now we should have more guys to throw the ball to buy them to.
- 1:18:17Hello? I'm will go but my hope is Grant
- 1:18:19Wilson. The quarterback in 2024 if he
- 1:18:22just lit it up in 2023 and we want 11 games a year ahead of
- 1:18:25schedule. All right, so the portal, no one
- 1:18:32else has left. No one else has entered.
- 1:18:34There's a lot of kids out there again.
- 1:18:35I feel sorry for them. If you have not The Hardy would
- 1:18:41Virginia Tech tailgate event is 11 days away. 20 bucks for a
- 1:18:47ticket. I'm not sure if they're still on
- 1:18:49sale or not. I would have said they were the
- 1:18:51last time I checked, but, you know, I don't know if they've
- 1:18:54gotten to a Full House here or not but they were talking about
- 1:18:57selling. They were talking about selling
- 1:18:59tickets on day of events. I don't I don't think wherever
- 1:19:02they're having at this time, like, a capacity thing.
- 1:19:04You don't have a limitation for can, I mean me and you go there,
- 1:19:08we've been there. Brian.
- 1:19:09There is no limitation, you get 6,000 people as big as an area
- 1:19:13that is, I don't know whether going to park everybody.
- 1:19:15But hey, if you work that out, when, you know, we'll get there
- 1:19:19early get there, really early. Speaking of, I've got to have a
- 1:19:22couple beers hit the food trucks early.
- 1:19:27I can tell you 20 bucks is pretty much the price of a beer.
- 1:19:30They're usually get a 16 oz usually somewhere between six
- 1:19:33and eight bucks. You leave a tip.
- 1:19:36The beer itself is worth the $20.
- 1:19:40All the other stuff is a lot of fun.
- 1:19:42Also, before we wrap up here, you get snacks, and you get to
- 1:19:45hear some coaches and potentially some players, talk
- 1:19:49about some football and so in a very good chance to meet them
- 1:19:53and interact with these guys up front.
- 1:19:55That's usually a lot of the hockey club events you pay that
- 1:19:58money. You get the interaction.
- 1:19:59And as we've seen, Brent price and some of this other staff, I
- 1:20:03had a feeling. If you walk up at them, start a
- 1:20:04conversation they would Carry it on with you.
- 1:20:08So that's awesome. Now one last piece of
- 1:20:12information here, Brian we wanted to do a shout-out is just
- 1:20:16a few days ago, our Twitter account, boundary Corner, hit,
- 1:20:191,500 followers. And for two guys who in the

- 1:21:59All right? Brian is anything happened to
- 1:22:01the ACC in the Pac-12 merged where we have to gnaw and
- 1:22:08hopefully hopefully the Big 12 does approach those 16 they were
- 1:22:11talking about out, the gate from the Pac-12 or the loose
- 1:22:14partnership is always already is Already.
- 1:22:17You know folding that I yeah I think we're good to go.
